- 0:53Speaker 2: thank you for coming home. We appreciate that that's your here. Hi,
- 0:58Speaker 2: I need an abandon our show forever.
- 1:00Speaker 3: No, I didn't, and I would never have been you, Kevin,
- 1:03Speaker 3: because I do love you. But listen, if I could
- 1:05Speaker 3: go back to Italy.
- 1:06Speaker 4: All right, oh god, which.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Is kind of amusing to me because like I went
- 1:13Speaker 2: last year and you went to some of the same
- 1:15Speaker 2: places I went. I saw you were at the Vatican
- 1:17Speaker 2: and there was some nice things that you did. But
- 1:21Speaker 2: you know, I came back all bubbly about it. We're
- 1:23Speaker 2: going to talk about your trip tonight. If people can't
- 1:26Speaker 2: get a vision and be excited about going to Italy,
- 1:29Speaker 2: I know that we kind of we had some misfires
- 1:33Speaker 2: on our trip in terms of not being able to
- 1:35Speaker 2: sell it out in time. But people, those of you listening,
- 1:39Speaker 2: this is why I want you to know when when
- 1:40Speaker 2: we announce that we're doing something, you got to jump
- 1:43Speaker 2: on it right away so we can take advantage of
- 1:45Speaker 2: it and get you over there. Because after you hear
- 1:48Speaker 2: from Linda tonight, you're not You're not going to want
- 1:51Speaker 2: to miss it the next time we.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Go, of course not.
- 1:55Speaker 2: How many times do you think you've been to Italy
- 1:57Speaker 2: now in your life if you just.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Had you know, so funny, I was just talking to
- 2:02Speaker 3: a friend of mine and I think, yeah, I mean,
- 2:06Speaker 3: I think that's yeah, at least I think, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 3: I was just saying to a friend of mine this morning,
- 2:12Speaker 3: like this has been I came along, you know, in
- 2:15Speaker 3: my parents' life at a time when my father was
- 2:19Speaker 3: starting this journey. So I was there from the inception, truly,
- 2:25Speaker 3: and I was fortunate that he made me a part
- 2:28Speaker 3: of that journey and believed in taking me everywhere and
- 2:33Speaker 3: taking my mom.
- 2:34Speaker 4: And you know, I traveled.
- 2:36Speaker 3: My my siblings were older, my sister was married, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 3: my brothers were in college, and you know, it didn't
- 2:43Speaker 3: work for them. And so I've seen the evolution of
- 2:49Speaker 3: Perillo and of the travel industry to Europe.
- 2:53Speaker 4: I hate to say it.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I'm going to be fifty nine next week. Have oh
- 2:58Speaker 3: oh it's not Thank you, botox and filler.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I have known that you don't have to give all
- 3:08Speaker 2: your secrets away.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Yes you do. Listen, we got to admit it. Man.
- 3:12Speaker 4: But here's the thing.
- 3:13Speaker 3: So I've seen it for so for fifty nine years, literally,
- 3:18Speaker 3: I've been living.
- 3:19Speaker 4: This and it's been my life.
- 3:20Speaker 3: And so I've seen the changes. I've seen the comings,
- 3:25Speaker 3: the goings, the the good, the bad, the ugly, the
- 3:29Speaker 3: experiences air travel, you know, the death of certain airlines.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I mean, right, you know, so it's been quite a journey. So,
- 3:39Speaker 3: I mean it's a lot, a lot of back and forth,
- 3:42Speaker 3: for sure.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I mean two hundred is probably I.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Would say it's got to be within that ballpark, right,
- 3:47Speaker 3: A couple times a year at least, you know, Well,
- 3:50Speaker 3: your own COVID kind of put a damp point.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Two times fifty nine does not equal two hundred.
- 3:56Speaker 3: No, so let's say three times a year at one point,
- 3:58Speaker 3: you know, then COVID slowed things down.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Well, that's what I was worrying, Like, how often growing
- 4:03Speaker 2: up as a Perillo spawn, how often did you get there?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Like your busiest year, were you there once a month?
- 4:11Speaker 3: Had there been a couple of times a year? Yeah,
- 4:14Speaker 3: I mean COVID, we really didn't. But I mean that
- 4:17Speaker 3: kind of put a damper on everybody.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Right, But we did. I mean even when.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I traveled with my kids, I traveled pregnant. I I
- 4:25Speaker 3: was always making sure at minimum, you know, two times in.
- 4:31Speaker 2: So they had a few trips. They didn't even I
- 4:34Speaker 2: can tell you.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Every single one of them was there in utero except
- 4:39Speaker 3: for death.
- 4:41Speaker 4: I don't know. Maybe Denan may have been there in
- 4:43Speaker 4: utero too. He was my first place.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, he was my first, but every for sure everyone else.
- 4:49Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, I was just telling my daughter,
- 4:51Speaker 3: brand who's due in a few weeks, you know, I said,
- 4:55Speaker 3: I traveled to Italy with you. I was due with
- 4:59Speaker 3: her in Au and I was there in June, and
- 5:02Speaker 3: you know, I pushed it to the end. My son
- 5:06Speaker 3: was in September. I was there at July. I mean,
- 5:11Speaker 3: I did it as far as I.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Could travel with them, pregnant with the other kids too.
- 5:16Speaker 4: I did it.
- 5:17Speaker 3: But I'm crazy and I'm an anomaly. Some people would
- 5:21Speaker 3: refuse to do that. But I just always felt that
- 5:25Speaker 3: traveling with my kids was important because if you're a traveler,
- 5:30Speaker 3: forget about them.
- 5:31Speaker 4: For a second and their experience.
- 5:32Speaker 3: If you're a traveler and all of a sudden you say,
- 5:35Speaker 3: oh my god, well we have a kid now, so
- 5:36Speaker 3: now we're not going to travel, it kind of puts
- 5:38Speaker 3: a damper on your lifestyle. You have to incorporate your
- 5:41Speaker 3: children to your lifestyle. And for me, that lifestyle was
- 5:45Speaker 3: consistent traveling. So and that's the story.
- 5:49Speaker 2: It's your income level and where you're at and the
- 5:53Speaker 2: ability to do things.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I mean, for me, yeah, it was my life.
- 5:58Speaker 2: What I have found to be true is that if
- 6:00Speaker 2: you really want to be a person who travels, you
- 6:05Speaker 2: will find ways to travel.
- 6:07Speaker 4: That is one hundred correct.
- 6:08Speaker 2: And that was interesting because while you were gone. We
- 6:11Speaker 2: had a couple of opportunities to get together with some
- 6:14Speaker 2: friends and some other things, and I was thinking about
- 6:16Speaker 2: this while you were in Italy. But you know, my
- 6:21Speaker 2: bride and I, I don't know that we discussed our
- 6:24Speaker 2: expectations about travel before we got married, which is probably
- 6:28Speaker 2: something that you should do with a potential spouse, because
- 6:31Speaker 2: if you have very different views of travel, there may
- 6:35Speaker 2: be other things that you have disagreements on that you're
- 6:38Speaker 2: not even fully aware of. But we have and we
- 6:43Speaker 2: we did kind of like backpedal it quite a bit
- 6:46Speaker 2: when the kids were small because we just couldn't afford,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you know, especially out of the country trips. But we
- 6:53Speaker 2: have always gone and gone and gone and made it
- 6:57Speaker 2: made it a choice to make sure that we even
- 6:59Speaker 2: if it's it's just you know, kind of a quiet
- 7:01Speaker 2: summer and it's just down the shore to Kate May
- 7:03Speaker 2: or wherever, we are going to take time to get
- 7:07Speaker 2: away and take the kids and go through the process
- 7:10Speaker 2: of doing that because I just I just think it
- 7:13Speaker 2: it is a benefit to everybody in the family who
- 7:16Speaker 2: were your traveling companions on this trip.
- 7:19Speaker 3: So it was myself, my six kids, and my daughter
- 7:24Speaker 3: in law, a Donna up until we got to Naples
- 7:29Speaker 3: and she had to fly home because she had a commitment.
- 7:31Speaker 3: So we were on our twelve day Italy North Continental
- 7:35Speaker 3: without meals and it was great. And we had another family,
- 7:40Speaker 3: the Ostranders, who were amazing, and they were also a
- 7:44Speaker 3: small group, they were five of them, and so it
- 7:50Speaker 3: was like this private little Perillo tour and it was awesome,
- 7:55Speaker 3: and it was awesome for me to be with my
- 7:57Speaker 3: kids and go back like we used to do.
- 8:00Speaker 2: So far you were able to be there with them,
- 8:03Speaker 2: and at what ages what's the age difference from when
- 8:06Speaker 2: they were to now?
- 8:07Speaker 3: So two years ago we were there because Devin got
- 8:09Speaker 3: married in Florence, so we were all there then too.
- 8:12Speaker 3: As far as taking a tour, it was probably right
- 8:14Speaker 3: before COVID And so this time I'm like, guys, we
- 8:17Speaker 3: got to do the tour again because the tours are
- 8:19Speaker 3: so much fun, so much fun. And guess what, even
- 8:24Speaker 3: Linda Perillo likes to have her hand held through Italy.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I don't want to be dealing with my luggage. I
- 8:33Speaker 3: don't want to be dealing with transports. I don't want
- 8:36Speaker 3: to be dealing with transfers. I don't want to deal
- 8:38Speaker 3: with any of that, just bring me there, take my
- 8:40Speaker 3: bags to my room, and bring me there, and that's
- 8:43Speaker 3: part and part of that fun. And stopping at the
- 8:46Speaker 3: auto grill for lunch, and I mean, these are all
- 8:50Speaker 3: part of the tour pictures, which is why when people
- 8:52Speaker 3: say to me, I don't want to go on a tour,
- 8:54Speaker 3: I'm like, you know what you're missing.
- 8:56Speaker 4: It's so much fun and.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So enjoy it with the group. I've done it just
- 9:03Speaker 2: with the family, and I love both both ways. I
- 9:07Speaker 2: do like having the independence when the family is the
- 9:10Speaker 2: one that's just doing it by itself, to just kind
- 9:13Speaker 2: of be our own bosses and to just decide where
- 9:16Speaker 2: we want to go. But I do like the organization
- 9:19Speaker 2: that a tour brings, especially if you're trying to go
- 9:21Speaker 2: and see a bunch of stuff. When we did Italy
- 9:23Speaker 2: North a couple of years ago, like I wouldn't have
- 9:26Speaker 2: gone to the five lakes that we went to. I
- 9:28Speaker 2: wouldn't have known which ones to go to. I probably
- 9:30Speaker 2: would have just hung out at you know, Maggiore or
- 9:33Speaker 2: Como for a few days and then been like, Okay,
- 9:35Speaker 2: I saw the lakes. No I didn't. I wouldn't have
- 9:37Speaker 2: seen the lakes and our favorite was one of the
- 9:39Speaker 2: smaller ones that had little island in it.
- 9:41Speaker 4: So it was like, you know, you went to Straisa.
- 9:44Speaker 4: I guess probably yes, they.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Have that they have that monastery on that island in
- 9:48Speaker 2: the middle. Anyway, I'm going to talk Italy all night.
- 9:50Speaker 2: If you hate Italy, this is not the show for
- 9:52Speaker 2: you to know. Coming right back, don't go anywhere.
- 10:02Speaker 4: From New York. It's Radio Night Live with Kevin McCullough.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Welcome back. It's travel Tuesday, a true travel Tuesday, not
- 10:12Speaker 2: not a not a limping along travel Tuesday. Like it's
- 10:15Speaker 2: been the last couple of weeks without our without our
- 10:18Speaker 2: better half of Linda, but she's back, and I want
- 10:23Speaker 2: you to put on your calendar. What is it September
- 10:26Speaker 2: first that we're going to be doing the show live
- 10:30Speaker 2: from Arthur Avenue. Christ Christine Nicholas will be joining us.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I don't know that the venue is confirmed yet, but
- 10:38Speaker 2: we've we've got a couple of us. Yeah, but September first,
- 10:41Speaker 2: we will be in Arthur Avenue and the the we're
- 10:44Speaker 2: gonna tape two shows there that night. The first one
- 10:47Speaker 2: we're gonna tape is the one with Linda and I
- 10:49Speaker 2: and it'll air that evening and you can come and
- 10:51Speaker 2: get your book signed by Linda. She'll be doing a
- 10:54Speaker 2: book signing that evening, and then stick around because we'll
- 10:57Speaker 2: we'll tape an hour with Christine Nicholas for the Friday
- 11:00Speaker 2: show as well. So it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 11:01Speaker 2: September one, Arthur Avenue, Come and join us. It's going
- 11:05Speaker 2: to be too much fun. You don't want to miss it,
- 11:07Speaker 2: like going to Italy, Like going to Italy. I want
- 11:09Speaker 2: to miss out on going to Italy, which sadly, we
- 11:11Speaker 2: had to cancel our trip this year because we just
- 11:13Speaker 2: didn't have no emails signed up for it. But maybe
- 11:16Speaker 2: maybe if you're listening tonight and you say, hey, I
- 11:18Speaker 2: think I really would like to do that, send us
- 11:20Speaker 2: an email. We can we can reorganize for next year. Linda,
- 11:24Speaker 2: So you did you did a traditional tour. Now this
- 11:27Speaker 2: is a tour that people could look up in the
- 11:29Speaker 2: Perillo catalog and actually purchase. They could do the same
- 11:32Speaker 2: thing you did.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah, we did the twelve day it only North
- 11:35Speaker 3: Continental without meals. I mean I picked without meals because
- 11:39Speaker 3: you know, here's the thing. Some people do like meals
- 11:43Speaker 3: because again they feel more secure knowing where they're going
- 11:46Speaker 3: to eat, you know, a time, especially.
- 11:49Speaker 2: If it's a full whole time going and they've.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Never been absolutely one thousand percent.
- 11:53Speaker 3: So with my group, you know, it's like it's like
- 11:58Speaker 3: opening up a habit trail of Gerbils and saying, oh,
- 12:04Speaker 3: here and here right, or I have that telling a
- 12:06Speaker 3: Gerbil to be back. It's got the same level of communication,
- 12:12Speaker 3: come back to the habit trail at twelve what So
- 12:16Speaker 3: for us it was better to not have the meals
- 12:20Speaker 3: and just kind of go on our own. Otherwise there's pressure,
- 12:23Speaker 3: you know, and sometimes a day after a day of touring,
- 12:26Speaker 3: which can happen, you come back in the afternoon. Now
- 12:28Speaker 3: the pressure for dinner, now, the pressure to meet the
- 12:30Speaker 3: group at seven o'clock, the pressure to be and then
- 12:33Speaker 3: if you have to get on the bus and go somewhere,
- 12:34Speaker 3: it's not like you can meet the group or whatever.
- 12:36Speaker 3: So I personally like the flexibility. However, it's my country,
- 12:42Speaker 3: it's like my second home. I know where to go,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I know what to do.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Somebody that doesn't appreciates the arranged meals. With that comes
- 12:52Speaker 3: the regimen of a schedule, which is okay too. So
- 12:58Speaker 3: PS That's why I did it without meals, just to
- 13:00Speaker 3: keep I know my group right.
- 13:02Speaker 4: I was explaining to my kids, you have to know your.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Fellow travelers, even in a family, you have to know
- 13:09Speaker 3: who you're dealing with so that you do make the
- 13:12Speaker 3: prudent decision so that the rest of the group is
- 13:15Speaker 3: not screwed.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Okay, don't do too much, don't expect too.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Much, don't cram too much down anybody's throat, and you'll
- 13:25Speaker 3: have a good time.
- 13:27Speaker 4: So we did that. A lot of changes though, you know, in.
- 13:33Speaker 3: A lot of changes I think unfortunately unfortunately for some
- 13:38Speaker 3: when it comes to visiting these sites that I hadn't
- 13:41Speaker 3: experienced in the last few years. So as far as
- 13:48Speaker 3: so for example, you know, back in the day, right
- 13:51Speaker 3: you'd get on the bus and you'd go to the
- 13:53Speaker 3: Coliseum and you'd walk right in. And you'd go to
- 13:54Speaker 3: the Vatican and you'd go with your your your tour
- 13:57Speaker 3: guide and you'd walk right in right you know. So
- 13:59Speaker 3: there's a difference between your escort who's your escort, and
- 14:03Speaker 3: there's a difference between that and the city guide and
- 14:05Speaker 3: escort cannot perform the job of a city guide. They're
- 14:08Speaker 3: very clear about that. In Italy, so you get a
- 14:11Speaker 3: different city guide for the city tours. You know, we
- 14:14Speaker 3: used to get off the Vatican and you know, just
- 14:18Speaker 3: go and go inside with the group. But now you
- 14:22Speaker 3: have tickets. Now you have to present identification. Now you
- 14:28Speaker 3: have to be wearing and I'm going to tell you
- 14:31Speaker 3: the Linda Perillo story, Kevin, that I should have known
- 14:35Speaker 3: better and I didn't. But this is where your tour
- 14:37Speaker 3: guide has to be very clear. I wasn't wearing my radio.
- 14:42Speaker 3: We give everyone a radio, right so that the tour
- 14:45Speaker 3: guide can speak like this in a normal tone and
- 14:47Speaker 3: everyone hears the conversation through the year.
- 14:50Speaker 2: We had one of your tour guides when we did
- 14:52Speaker 2: the Vatican last year, and I forget that you have,
- 14:56Speaker 2: but it's a woman that worked with you guys forever
- 14:58Speaker 2: and we facetimed with you. But anyway, she did have
- 15:01Speaker 2: those and we had the little in ears and we
- 15:04Speaker 2: you know, yeah, did the whole thing.
- 15:06Speaker 3: So we got the Vatican will give you a new
- 15:10Speaker 3: ear piece. They want you to use their ear piece
- 15:12Speaker 3: and your tour guide to use there, which was fine.
- 15:15Speaker 3: When I got to the coliseum, I said, I am
- 15:17Speaker 3: not lugging this radio with me.
- 15:19Speaker 4: It's a pain in the neck. I don't want it.
- 15:21Speaker 3: When I got there, they said, yeah, unless you have
- 15:24Speaker 3: a radio, you can't go in if you're part of
- 15:27Speaker 3: a tour group because they don't want your tour leader screaming.
- 15:31Speaker 3: They want to make sure everyone in that group has
- 15:34Speaker 3: their radio. So I didn't go in, and neither did Valentina.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Now I didn't care. I had done this a million times.
- 15:40Speaker 3: I was at the coliseum. I liked the facade. The
- 15:43Speaker 3: point I'm making is that's a real thing, and people
- 15:46Speaker 3: would get very upset had they not known. And our
- 15:49Speaker 3: tour leader was excellent, but he didn't even realize that
- 15:52Speaker 3: this was going to happen. The other thing is now
- 15:55Speaker 3: you have to travel with identification. To get into a
- 15:58Speaker 3: venue like the Colosseum and the Forum, you have to
- 16:03Speaker 3: have identification with you. And so what I did was
- 16:08Speaker 3: I brought my passport hard with me. I do not
- 16:12Speaker 3: travel with my passport, okay, at all. That goes in
- 16:18Speaker 3: the safe in the hotel room. I have found that
- 16:21Speaker 3: a picture of your passport works. If you do not
- 16:24Speaker 3: have a passport card, that should suffice for identification. But again,
- 16:29Speaker 3: these are things that have evolved over the past. I'm
- 16:33Speaker 3: going to say five years that I had not done
- 16:38Speaker 3: or experienced before because I hadn't been on a tour
- 16:40Speaker 3: in a few years. So those things have changed. Now
- 16:46Speaker 3: where do they better say?
- 16:47Speaker 2: Since though, when you think about how significant and important
- 16:50Speaker 2: the Vatican is and how like particularly bad actors on
- 16:55Speaker 2: the world stage when I like to take we know
- 16:57Speaker 2: that marks and monuments has blown and blow them up.
- 17:01Speaker 2: So it's like you kind of I kind of understand it.
- 17:04Speaker 3: But the thing is this, your identification was not being recorded.
- 17:07Speaker 3: It wasn't like they put you through a scanner. It
- 17:09Speaker 3: was like the gatekeeper, the Italian gatekeeper at the coliseum
- 17:14Speaker 3: way Luigi okay, Bob Bennett, Luigi bobbe Okay, Bye, Sue, Sue.
- 17:19Speaker 4: You know, they didn't know Linda.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Perilla was in there or not in there, Like if
- 17:23Speaker 3: if it blew up, would they go we gotta look
- 17:25Speaker 3: for Linda Perilla.
- 17:26Speaker 4: They don't really know who's in there.
- 17:28Speaker 3: It's kind of like a pro forma thing where they go, well, yes,
- 17:32Speaker 3: so we did to take the identification of everybody that
- 17:35Speaker 3: entered the coliseum, but we cannot do anything about this.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Uh before we send the email, just I just want
- 17:42Speaker 2: to remind everybody Linda is Italian. She's allowed to do
- 17:45Speaker 2: the stereotypical accents. Oh I'm not I'm not Italian, but
- 17:49Speaker 2: she's allowed to.
- 17:51Speaker 3: This is impossible. You cannot enter without the radio? Really, yes, okay,
- 18:01Speaker 3: thanks Luigi. I will not ender because it's impossible. So
- 18:07Speaker 3: the Italians like to use the word impossible in conjunction
- 18:12Speaker 3: with not possible. They don't realize that impossible and not
- 18:16Speaker 3: possible have two completely right differently in English, especially in English. Yes,
- 18:22Speaker 3: so they are very funny. But the point is it
- 18:24Speaker 3: really doesn't do anything. I mean, so what you know,
- 18:29Speaker 3: I mean, it's like they scanned you and they know
- 18:32Speaker 3: that you're in there and.
- 18:33Speaker 4: That you exited.
- 18:34Speaker 3: How's that have that scanning somebody when they exit to
- 18:37Speaker 3: make sure that you're not in there anymore?
- 18:39Speaker 4: Like they would have no way of tracking anybody down.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Okay, that's just some of her adventures in Rome. We're
- 18:45Speaker 2: going to find out where else Linda Perillo spent the
- 18:48Speaker 2: last couple of weeks so she can just you know,
- 18:51Speaker 2: rage batis a little further as to why we don't
- 18:54Speaker 2: get to go back. Cavin McColl and Linda Barlo. It's
- 18:56Speaker 2: travel Tuesday stay here.
- 19:03Speaker 4: And now I'm from New York back to radio night Life.
- 19:06Speaker 4: You're Kevin mccolla.
- 19:08Speaker 2: All right, welcome back. It's travel Tuesday, and Linda Perillo
- 19:11Speaker 2: is fresh off the plane. Not both.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Oh, I have to tell you my story too, Kevin,
- 19:18Speaker 3: about United Airlines and and and that at the beginning
- 19:22Speaker 3: of this.
- 19:23Speaker 4: So you let me know, and I can tell you this.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Well you can tell you may as well tell us
- 19:26Speaker 2: now you tease this.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Okay.
- 19:28Speaker 3: So I was in a business class and my kids,
- 19:32Speaker 3: unfortunately not I hate.
- 19:34Speaker 2: You, I despise you. Well you would throw that at
- 19:37Speaker 2: my face when I'm six foot two and I.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Well, well, so I'm going to say two things. Let
- 19:44Speaker 3: me start with that portion of the program. If you
- 19:47Speaker 3: can fly business class, aside from the you know, the
- 19:52Speaker 3: quote unquote luxury part of it, it will save you
- 19:57Speaker 3: from jet lag.
- 19:59Speaker 4: That being a to lie down and.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Sleep straight forward and stretch your legs beyond anything else,
- 20:09Speaker 3: beyond your TV screen, beyond your meal, beyond it, to
- 20:12Speaker 3: be able to sleep like a human being is worth especially.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Oh and then coming back it's nine hours. I mean
- 20:21Speaker 3: that helps too, But I didn't have any jet lag, right,
- 20:24Speaker 3: So we boarded the plane and the next thing, you know,
- 20:27Speaker 3: and my daughter in law was sitting on the other
- 20:30Speaker 3: end of the opposite aisle.
- 20:32Speaker 4: This woman starts profusely vomiting.
- 20:35Speaker 3: And all over the floor, all over the floor, all
- 20:39Speaker 3: over the floor. So now just after takeoff, no no, no, no,
- 20:42Speaker 3: we were still at the gate. Oh so now she
- 20:45Speaker 3: starts throwing up ps. Now they have to get flight
- 20:49Speaker 3: attendants and hazmat suits to start cleaning up her stuff.
- 20:53Speaker 3: And the husband is going, Christina, use the bathroom. Christina,
- 20:58Speaker 3: get to the bathroom. Gina couldn't get up out of
- 21:01Speaker 3: her seat. Now I'm making assumptions that I'm not going
- 21:04Speaker 3: to say on the air, just in case, but I
- 21:06Speaker 3: have my ideas.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Okay, you know.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Some pre game stuff that was probably.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Big, maybe a drink or two keV I in the
- 21:14Speaker 2: summer heat, in the summer heat, and then maybe not
- 21:17Speaker 2: as non claustrophobic as she thought she was, and maybe
- 21:21Speaker 2: fear of flying, and maybe she'd even put some food
- 21:24Speaker 2: in that stomach too.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Right, Well, so now she's throwing up all over the place,
- 21:29Speaker 3: doesn't get out of her seat. And I said to
- 21:31Speaker 3: the head flight attendant, who was very rude, I said,
- 21:34Speaker 3: do you realize there are other people on this plane.
- 21:36Speaker 4: I said, I hope she's getting off. Well, we have
- 21:38Speaker 4: to follow protocol. Well we have to follow protocol. Well,
- 21:41Speaker 4: we have to follow protocol, I said, Is she getting
- 21:42Speaker 4: off the plane? I said, Because, I said, I'm.
- 21:44Speaker 3: A travel writer, I said, and I have a radio
- 21:47Speaker 3: broadcast and I'm going to tell the story, because I said,
- 21:50Speaker 3: I need to protect the public. I've been traveling for
- 21:52Speaker 3: a very long time. This is unacceptable. Well, we started
- 21:57Speaker 3: taking off, We get the runway and all of a sudden,
- 22:06Speaker 3: the flight attendant gets up from her jumpsyat runs to
- 22:09Speaker 3: the cockpit, tell us the pilot we can't take off,
- 22:12Speaker 3: aborts the takeoff, turns around, goes back to the gate
- 22:19Speaker 3: and tells everyone in business class they need to get
- 22:22Speaker 3: off the plane. And if you want to get off
- 22:25Speaker 3: and you're in the back of the plane, you may
- 22:26Speaker 3: get off because they need to fumigate the flight.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, how many hours did this set you
- 22:32Speaker 2: guys back?
- 22:33Speaker 4: Five five?
- 22:34Speaker 3: We got to Venice so late we lost the entire
- 22:37Speaker 3: day and I have to tell you and United Ireland.
- 22:40Speaker 3: And again I asked a flight attendant, I said, what
- 22:43Speaker 3: are you doing? Why are we so concerned about this
- 22:46Speaker 3: one individual. I said, you consider about getting sued by
- 22:50Speaker 3: this one individual?
- 22:52Speaker 4: Really, what about everyone else at your.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Right?
- 22:58Speaker 4: So the flight attend and then said, well, we happened
- 23:01Speaker 4: to agree with you.
- 23:02Speaker 3: But Chicago said, Chicago said, I wish I had Chicago
- 23:07Speaker 3: in my house.
- 23:08Speaker 4: I'd be Hey Chicago, what could I do? It'd be
- 23:10Speaker 4: the new series? Hey Chicago, Hey Chicago, what do I
- 23:13Speaker 4: do about this?
- 23:14Speaker 3: They had to wait to get clearance from United Airlines
- 23:18Speaker 3: in Chicago to do anything. So finally she gets off
- 23:22Speaker 3: the flight and then's smiling with her husband. I see
- 23:26Speaker 3: her at the gate at the gate agent. They would
- 23:27Speaker 3: not allow her back on the plane. She left two
- 23:30Speaker 3: empty seats and business class and we took off five
- 23:33Speaker 3: hours later.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Wow.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Horrible.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I'm sorry United Airlines they dealt with it horrendously. She
- 23:39Speaker 3: should have been off the flight the minute she started
- 23:42Speaker 3: throwing out out the door.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Kid.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's better than my throw up story, which
- 23:48Speaker 2: was on a very hot day approaching coming in from Charlotte,
- 23:53Speaker 2: North Carolina. And these three women that had they had,
- 23:57Speaker 2: they kept it down for the whole flight. But then
- 23:59Speaker 2: we get in this holding pattern, you know around Newark
- 24:02Speaker 2: where you're just going in circles over and over and over.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Man, it was like they picked the perfect time to
- 24:09Speaker 2: not be able to do anything about it. And and
- 24:12Speaker 2: you know, because we're well, we're almost down on the ground.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Uh.
- 24:15Speaker 2: And then by the time we were and then everybody
- 24:17Speaker 2: had to walk past them, and it was just I
- 24:20Speaker 2: was just unbelievable. But delaying your trip five hours, that's
- 24:26Speaker 2: that's that's the way by.
- 24:28Speaker 4: The time we get to Venice. And then the other
- 24:30Speaker 4: thing with Venice is that I love Venice dearly.
- 24:33Speaker 2: So you would have landed what time would you have
- 24:35Speaker 2: landed at eight am?
- 24:37Speaker 4: No? Nine? I think about nine, ten, eleven, twelve.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Is it a NonStop New York non stop?
- 24:43Speaker 4: Yeah, Venice to Venice. So now you're landing in that
- 24:47Speaker 4: landing in Venice at two o'clock right.
- 24:51Speaker 3: The other thing is the Italians have now instituted what
- 24:54Speaker 3: was supposed to have been a very time effective method.
- 24:59Speaker 2: With a break hold that thought. Come right back. She's
- 25:02Speaker 2: I'm Kevin. It's travel Tuesday.
- 25:08Speaker 4: What a little moonline can do. It's radio night life.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Here's Kevin mccollor.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Okay, ladies and gentlemen. When we last left her, Heroin
- 25:17Speaker 2: was about to land at Venice at two in the
- 25:20Speaker 2: afternoon when she had been slated to at nine in
- 25:23Speaker 2: the morning. Is losing five hours of her day in
- 25:27Speaker 2: dass and if there's a city that she don't want
- 25:29Speaker 2: to lose five hours in Venice, that is right, It's like,
- 25:33Speaker 2: that's so the my Venice, my only Venice experience was
- 25:37Speaker 2: our Italy Northern thing a couple of years ago, and
- 25:40Speaker 2: our tour wasn't staying in Venice for more than a day,
- 25:43Speaker 2: and I slipped my tour guide a couple of paper
- 25:47Speaker 2: things and she got us a hotel room and we
- 25:50Speaker 2: stayed like a day and a half longer than everybody
- 25:53Speaker 2: else was there. We were able to get like an
- 25:54Speaker 2: overnight and it was wonderful. We loved being in Venice.
- 25:59Speaker 4: First, I love tennis, I do.
- 26:01Speaker 2: That was our story. And it wasn't like summer. It
- 26:04Speaker 2: was winter. It is November going into December, so it
- 26:07Speaker 2: was pretty cold anyway. So you land at two in
- 26:10Speaker 2: the afternoon, you're supposed to be there at nine in
- 26:11Speaker 2: the morning. And the Italians, you said, had implemented this.
- 26:15Speaker 4: What is supposed to be typical Italian a much.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Faster way to get yourself through passport control. With this
- 26:21Speaker 3: automatic passport thing, I would have preferred to have someone
- 26:27Speaker 3: come down from a vineyard and just been there stamping
- 26:30Speaker 3: things and going and letting you through. I mean, it
- 26:33Speaker 3: was the slowest process in the world. And it's supposed
- 26:37Speaker 3: to be electronic. They take a picture of your face,
- 26:39Speaker 3: you put your passport on the thing, and you go
- 26:41Speaker 3: through an hour and a half on the passport line.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Now you have to get your luggage, and now you
- 26:48Speaker 3: have to meet your tour guide who has to wait
- 26:50Speaker 3: for the rest of the group right.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Or is probably waiting on you because you're probably the
- 26:55Speaker 2: last of the group to get there.
- 26:56Speaker 3: We were the first, and I made short listen. I
- 26:58Speaker 3: told my kids this, I said, I don't care if
- 27:01Speaker 3: we're traveling with five people, which we were, or we're
- 27:04Speaker 3: traveling with thirty five other people. You set the example
- 27:09Speaker 3: for you. You be on that bus early, you sit
- 27:11Speaker 3: in the back of the bus, and they go ahead
- 27:15Speaker 3: of you everywhere, and you never make the group wait.
- 27:18Speaker 4: So I was very strict with.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Them in the beginning because I always felt that when
- 27:23Speaker 3: I'm on with a group with a tour and I
- 27:25Speaker 3: have done this many times, I like them to know
- 27:28Speaker 3: I'm traveling with them. A lot of it is because
- 27:31Speaker 3: now I know the tourist scored. I'm talking to them
- 27:33Speaker 3: in Italian and they kind of look at you like
- 27:35Speaker 3: who the So you got to kind of quash that
- 27:38Speaker 3: at the beginning.
- 27:38Speaker 4: And people love the fact that there's a.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Perillo taking a Perillo tour and they love it. So
- 27:45Speaker 3: we get to Venice and then you got to wait
- 27:47Speaker 3: for the boat to get you to your hotel because
- 27:51Speaker 3: when you land in Venice, you're not landing in Venice proper.
- 27:53Speaker 3: You're landing in mess today and that's where the Venice
- 27:57Speaker 3: airport is. And once you land in mess today, you
- 28:00Speaker 3: have to get your transfer to your hotel, which could
- 28:04Speaker 3: take another thirty thirty five minutes.
- 28:06Speaker 4: But I mean, listen, it's a beautiful.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Say did you stay in Venice proper?
- 28:11Speaker 3: No? And I have to say for Linda Perlo to
- 28:15Speaker 3: say she didn't love where she was takes a lot.
- 28:18Speaker 4: We were in the ghetto part.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Now I'm saying ghetto as the Italian ghetto, which is
- 28:25Speaker 3: the Jewish area, which is very residential and it's about
- 28:32Speaker 3: a twenty minute and it's very safe and pretty and everything.
- 28:36Speaker 3: It's about a twenty minute walk to Saint Mark's, which
- 28:40Speaker 3: a lot of people would not appreciate.
- 28:42Speaker 4: I don't appreciate it.
- 28:44Speaker 3: You gave up loke, beautiful hotel, Oh my god, gorgeous hotel,
- 28:48Speaker 3: the Dog's pal dojitzzo doja was?
- 28:51Speaker 4: I think of what it is, what it was.
- 28:53Speaker 3: But then you have to walk twenty minutes, or you
- 28:55Speaker 3: can take the launch, or you can take the which
- 29:00Speaker 3: is the uh.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Ferry uh to Saint Mark's. So listen.
- 29:05Speaker 3: It was a mixed review for me, my kids, the
- 29:08Speaker 3: the other family that we were with. I was more
- 29:10Speaker 3: bothered by it than most, just because I want.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Saint Mark's Square.
- 29:15Speaker 3: When I'm in Venice, I want to be in Saint Mark's,
- 29:17Speaker 3: you know, I want that. I want to be by
- 29:19Speaker 3: restaurants and stuff. Venice has changed a lot because, again, Kevin,
- 29:26Speaker 3: what you get with a lot of these port cities
- 29:29Speaker 3: is a lot of migrants, and you know, it takes
- 29:33Speaker 3: away from certain areas. I'm not going to say everything
- 29:36Speaker 3: because Venice is just so beautiful, but you know, those
- 29:40Speaker 3: are the if you were to ask me for changes,
- 29:41Speaker 3: those are the changes that I saw on Venice well.
- 29:43Speaker 2: And Venice has always been a highly migrant city.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Well it's true.
- 29:47Speaker 2: After you did, so what did what order? Was your trip?
- 29:51Speaker 2: Venice and then Rome and then Naples, Nae.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Lawrence and Naples no Venice, Lawrence, Naples, Rome, And I'm
- 29:57Speaker 3: going to tell you the gem and the surprise for
- 30:00Speaker 3: Linda was Naples. I loved it because Naples has this
- 30:07Speaker 3: reputation of being like a little full of rogues and
- 30:12Speaker 3: full of pickpockets and dirty, and it was none of that.
- 30:17Speaker 2: It's basically it's it's the Queen's portion of of of Italy.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Well, we were, I mean right on the water.
- 30:23Speaker 3: The restaurants were beautiful, there was shopping nearby. I mean,
- 30:27Speaker 3: and here's the thing you want to be with a
- 30:29Speaker 3: true Neapolitan. That's being with a true Italian because they
- 30:34Speaker 3: are just full of life, full of personnalit. I mean,
- 30:37Speaker 3: I'm happy with pizza. Pizza was invented really in POMPEII,
- 30:41Speaker 3: but in Naples. And then the whole story about why
- 30:43Speaker 3: it's called pizza because the queen had a lisp and
- 30:45Speaker 3: she couldn't say peta, she could say pizza. You know,
- 30:48Speaker 3: it's a whole there's a whole story behind that.
- 30:53Speaker 2: But further south than Naples, then.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Rome, Rome, and we went to Rome afterwards. Oh no,
- 31:00Speaker 3: Rome is above you're right.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Rome, that's too bad because you were so and I know.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Oh no, Well we went to Coppery from Naples. We
- 31:09Speaker 4: did go to one.
- 31:10Speaker 2: You did a boat day over.
- 31:11Speaker 4: There, we did.
- 31:12Speaker 3: And we debated going to Sorrento for the day or
- 31:15Speaker 3: going with the group to Coppery. So we opted to
- 31:17Speaker 3: go to Copriy because copy.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And how many hours did you spend on Coppery?
- 31:21Speaker 4: About five?
- 31:22Speaker 3: Okay, I think about five, I know. But here's the thing,
- 31:26Speaker 3: you know, a little again caveat. You know, when you're
- 31:29Speaker 3: on Coppery and you did Coppery, right, you have to remember.
- 31:34Speaker 2: A blink like we did it on a boat day.
- 31:36Speaker 2: So we stopped it for lunch, and then we went
- 31:38Speaker 2: all the way up the stairs kind of si high,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and then came all the way down and we got
- 31:42Speaker 2: back again. That was the extent of okay. In fact,
- 31:45Speaker 2: the bride felt so short sheeted. She's like, look, the
- 31:48Speaker 2: next time we go, you're taking me there for two nights.
- 31:53Speaker 4: That is so fun.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Well, listen, Coprey's gorgeous. You know, in the summertime, it's
- 31:57Speaker 3: definitely crowded.
- 31:58Speaker 4: But we had a beautiful, beautiful boat tour. You can't
- 32:01Speaker 4: go into the Blue Grotto anymore.
- 32:03Speaker 3: So we went to the White Grotto, and I think
- 32:05Speaker 3: the White Grotto is very pretty.
- 32:07Speaker 4: And you get a nice.
- 32:08Speaker 3: View of Coppery in the frontalone, which are the rocks right,
- 32:13Speaker 3: And then once you get off Copery the only drawback
- 32:17Speaker 3: to Coppery, and really, again you have to remember if
- 32:20Speaker 3: you're traveling there, the line is really to get back
- 32:24Speaker 3: on the funicolade to go back down more so than
- 32:29Speaker 3: going up. You get your tickets and you go up
- 32:30Speaker 3: and you're fine. It's coming back it's crowded. So if
- 32:34Speaker 3: you go to copper you have to remember allow yourself
- 32:36Speaker 3: probably like forty five minutes to get from Coppery, not
- 32:39Speaker 3: on a copy because on a coppery's all the way
- 32:41Speaker 3: up at the top right Copery proper to get down
- 32:45Speaker 3: to the bottom to the port, to go back to
- 32:47Speaker 3: wherever it is you're going.
- 32:48Speaker 2: All right. She's Linda Perila and Kevin mccallough. Final few
- 32:51Speaker 2: minutes straight.
- 32:52Speaker 5: Out once again from New York Heres Radio night Life
- 33:01Speaker 5: and Kevin McCulla, welcome back.
- 33:03Speaker 2: It's travel Tuesday. She's Linda Parillo, I'm Kevin McCullough. We've
- 33:06Speaker 2: got We've had a great conversation, barely scratched the surface
- 33:10Speaker 2: of what Linda's oh my gosh experience in Italy. But
- 33:13Speaker 2: in these final three minutes, what do you want to
- 33:15Speaker 2: add about your trip?
- 33:18Speaker 3: I loved it more than anything in this world, and
- 33:19Speaker 3: I wish I could go back tomorrow. I came home
- 33:21Speaker 3: just to get my mail, check on my dogs, and now.
- 33:23Speaker 4: I'm ready to go back again.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Do you want to say this? You're doing Europe this summer.
- 33:30Speaker 3: I want to give a few things because it is
- 33:32Speaker 3: very hot. There one things that I should have brought
- 33:34Speaker 3: that I didn't those personal fans for around your neck,
- 33:37Speaker 3: the ones that you wear around your neck, very important
- 33:40Speaker 3: to stay cool.
- 33:41Speaker 4: There one item that I did bring, very happy about it.
- 33:44Speaker 4: A lot of art.
- 33:45Speaker 3: But you didn't know this, Kevin, Your phone, your iPhone
- 33:48Speaker 3: and your laptop are dual voltage. Do you understand what
- 33:52Speaker 3: dual voltage is? Okay, a lot of people don't understand
- 33:55Speaker 3: that you do not need a converter for them. And
- 33:58Speaker 3: most of these rooms have you know, the regular plug.
- 34:03Speaker 3: Now most of these hotel rooms, however, you do not
- 34:06Speaker 3: need a converter for your phone or for your laptop.
- 34:09Speaker 3: You just need an adapter to go into the wall
- 34:12Speaker 3: because they will convert automatically.
- 34:14Speaker 4: And there were certain things hair dryers and stuff like that.
- 34:16Speaker 4: Do not bring your hair dryer.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Find the dual voltage things as much as you can.
- 34:22Speaker 3: I found great converters and adapters online that went right
- 34:25Speaker 3: into the wall and saved us unbelievable angst.
