Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome, welcome, welcome. It's
- 0:03Speaker 1: a time now for one on one with the pro.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The prone today is Lisa Miller.
- 0:07Speaker 2: She is with Truity Credit Union. How are you today,
- 0:10Speaker 2: young lady.
- 0:10Speaker 3: I am doing great.
- 0:11Speaker 4: How are you?
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm ready to learn because when Lisa came in, she says,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we're going to be talking about financial fraud, and I'm
- 0:20Speaker 1: thinking of myself. Oh tis the season, and he usually
- 0:23Speaker 1: picked the holidays for this. Don't they the bad people?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Oh gosh, So tell us a little bit about financial fraud.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Criminals trying to gain access to your funds, your money, individuals, businesses.
- 0:38Speaker 3: No one's safe.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Wow, and it's becoming increasingly more prevalent. I guess with
- 0:45Speaker 1: a lot of cyber tools. They got a lot in
- 0:49Speaker 1: their toolbox to try to get at you.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Yes, they try to stay one step ahead in all
- 0:55Speaker 4: the technology.
- 0:56Speaker 3: AI.
- 0:58Speaker 4: They're using chatcha now to communicate with us, so you
- 1:01Speaker 4: don't have that language barrier anymore.
- 1:05Speaker 1: So. These are people from all over the world, aren't they.
- 1:08Speaker 1: They're not just right here in our community. These are
- 1:10Speaker 1: international players.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:13Speaker 4: I've been to conferences and they've shown us the compounds
- 1:16Speaker 4: that they have built up just all over the world,
- 1:19Speaker 4: and it's it's scary how big it's gotten.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Well, you got me a compound, I mean yeah, I'm
- 1:25Speaker 1: thinking it's some guy in a basement, you know, living
- 1:27Speaker 1: with his mom, going hey, it needs a pizza money.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And it's not that this is big. This is a big,
- 1:33Speaker 1: long term, big time operation.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Huh.
- 1:36Speaker 4: It is. And the sad part is we used to think,
- 1:38Speaker 4: you know, it was the individual that was doing the
- 1:41Speaker 4: crime against us, but now it's it's people that are
- 1:46Speaker 4: trafficked and thrown into these compounds that are forced to
- 1:51Speaker 4: do all the communicating and trying to get your money,
- 1:54Speaker 4: and they have set goals in order to stay alive.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Oh, this is horrible on all ends of it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yes, And now how can we check ourselves before we
- 2:06Speaker 1: have our financial life all ruined and perhaps maybe somebody
- 2:10Speaker 1: else's too.
- 2:11Speaker 2: How do we go about checking being saved?
- 2:14Speaker 3: Number one thing? Check your accounts.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Daily, check you check it digitally on your phone, get
- 2:22Speaker 4: on the computer whatever they make that might be I
- 2:25Speaker 4: know a trudy. We have alerts where you can get
- 2:28Speaker 4: alerts if something over a certain dollar amount hits your account,
- 2:31Speaker 4: it'll send you a text or an email. Whatever you prefer,
- 2:35Speaker 4: not moving communication channels with someone.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So if you are.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Online dating and they things progress and they want to
- 2:44Speaker 4: start talking to you more, maybe do some face timing.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I would say keep that within your phone number and
- 2:51Speaker 4: not moving to what sapp or telegram. Those seem to
- 2:54Speaker 4: be the two hot to get places where criminals go,
- 2:58Speaker 4: kind of.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Like the can opener. Huh. Yes, wow, my goodness.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Now, I always thought that a payper check was probably
- 3:05Speaker 1: pretty safe, but I'm finding out, and I found out
- 3:09Speaker 1: the hard way because I've witnessed it with businesses. Sometimes
- 3:13Speaker 1: that's just as risky as anything these days.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Yes, we've actually seen probably more check fraud this year
- 3:20Speaker 4: than previous years, which I'm surprised because checks are supposed
- 3:24Speaker 4: to be going away, but they're not going anywhere anytime soon.
- 3:29Speaker 4: And with the holidays. If you do plan on mailing
- 3:33Speaker 4: someone a check as a gift, first off, advice against it.
- 3:37Speaker 4: There's other ways you can send money.
- 3:40Speaker 2: But send the card and pay palum.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Yep, send the card, pay Colum, Sell, Venmo, cash up.
- 3:49Speaker 4: I mean, all those do have fraud, but it's still
- 3:51Speaker 4: safer them putting in. Yes, and if you're going to
- 3:54Speaker 4: mail a check, take it into the post office and
- 3:57Speaker 4: drop it off in there. Don't put it in the
- 3:59Speaker 4: little blue boxes outside because those get hit all the time.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Oh and what is this thing I'm hearing called check washing?
- 4:08Speaker 3: Check washing?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Yes, so criminal does steal your check out of the mail.
- 4:14Speaker 4: They go fishing's what we call it, and find some
- 4:18Speaker 4: checks and then they dip them in some solution and
- 4:21Speaker 4: can change who you made it payable to, even the amount,
- 4:25Speaker 4: and make it out to themselves or someone else in
- 4:27Speaker 4: their fraud ring in it.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Just like that, Just like that goes.
- 4:33Speaker 1: You know, we talked about the love scams and how
- 4:35Speaker 1: to watch out for that, the the what's happened the telegram,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but it's it's never good to send personal information to
- 4:43Speaker 1: someone you've never met in.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Yes, and especially if they're giving a promise to pay
- 4:50Speaker 4: you back.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Say, oh, I you know, I'm I'm.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Stuck overseas and my bank counts are frozen for X
- 4:59Speaker 4: y Z. Can you please send me money so I
- 5:02Speaker 4: can buy a plane ticket so I can come home
- 5:04Speaker 4: and we can get married or meet, and then once
- 5:09Speaker 4: I get home, I'll give you the money.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Neither one of them comes home.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You know. Online job scams, I understand this is a
- 5:20Speaker 1: growing thing.
- 5:21Speaker 3: It is.
- 5:22Speaker 4: I think this is probably one of the scariest ones
- 5:24Speaker 4: because I mean, we're people are out there looking for
- 5:28Speaker 4: real jobs, trying to better themselves, better their finances, and
- 5:31Speaker 4: next thing that you know, they're victim to a scam
- 5:34Speaker 4: and they're now owing money a lot of times because
- 5:39Speaker 4: the criminals will give them fake checks to deposit for
- 5:43Speaker 4: payroll or to go buy equipment. They'll say, oh, great,
- 5:47Speaker 4: you're gonna work from home. We'll give you a check
- 5:50Speaker 4: to go buy the equipment you need to work for us,
- 5:53Speaker 4: but we're gonna have you buy gift cards with that money,
- 5:58Speaker 4: red flag, and then we'll send the equipment to you
- 6:03Speaker 4: with those gift cards that you purchased.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Oh my, that's always a big thing whenever they start
- 6:08Speaker 1: saying gift cards. Yeah, yeah, that my goodness. We're talking
- 6:13Speaker 1: with Lisa Millie and she is with Trudy Credit Union.
- 6:15Speaker 1: We're talking about financial fraud today, social engineering and online safety.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Let's kind of touch on that a little bit.
- 6:24Speaker 3: That's a big one, it is.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Yes, I'm sure all of y'all out there have received
- 6:33Speaker 4: a text within the last year either opposing as your
- 6:37Speaker 4: financial institution or someone going back to the job offering
- 6:41Speaker 4: you a job. I get text all the time of
- 6:43Speaker 4: oh hey, we saw your profile and we want to
- 6:46Speaker 4: offer you a job. You're going to start with three
- 6:48Speaker 4: thousand dollars a week and do this training. And I'm like,
- 6:52Speaker 4: I don't have an application out for I've got a
- 6:55Speaker 4: job and I'm I'm happy with it.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you.
- 6:58Speaker 4: The biggest ones, though, are the ones posing as your
- 7:00Speaker 4: financial institution asking.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Did you authorize this charge on your card? Respond yes
- 7:05Speaker 3: or no?
- 7:06Speaker 4: And you respond no, and next thing you know, someone's
- 7:09Speaker 4: calling you and go, okay, great, you know, let's let's
- 7:13Speaker 4: get this taken care of. We just sent you a
- 7:16Speaker 4: code to your phone to verify you.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Can you give that to us?
- 7:20Speaker 4: And that's that two factor authentication code that they need
- 7:24Speaker 4: to get into your digital banking.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Oh so really watch out.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Yes, we will never ask for any kind of number code.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You already know it, so we don't we I mean
- 7:38Speaker 2: what I mean, I.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Mean if you're calling me as a customer, yes, you
- 7:43Speaker 1: already know what's going on. Yes, so this gamesmanship is
- 7:47Speaker 1: not going to take place.
- 7:48Speaker 4: No, And the the best way to combat that because
- 7:52Speaker 4: there are legit texts that we will send you asking
- 7:54Speaker 4: did you authorize a transaction sure or your card? The
- 7:57Speaker 4: best thing to do is call the number on the
- 8:00Speaker 4: your card to confirm that there is suspected fraud on
- 8:03Speaker 4: your card, or call your financial institution and ask them, hey,
- 8:07Speaker 4: do you see anything funky going on in my card?
- 8:09Speaker 3: That is the safest way to do that.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Oh amen, Been there, done that, and it works.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So take Lisa's advice to heart on this one because
- 8:18Speaker 1: I can vouch for this. We also have talked about
- 8:22Speaker 1: monitoring your bank account and also making up setting up
- 8:27Speaker 1: account alerts. That's one thing we kind of touched on it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: It's pretty easy to do, isn't it. You can do
- 8:33Speaker 1: that with your app.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Correct.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Yep, you can do that on the app, and if
- 8:35Speaker 4: you have any difficulty, come in, call in. We're more
- 8:39Speaker 4: than helpy to walk you through that and help you
- 8:41Speaker 4: set it up.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Now, when we were talking about some of these imposters,
- 8:45Speaker 1: some of these texts, these spoof car IDs and the
- 8:50Speaker 1: urgent claims, that can be very frightening, especially to folks
- 8:55Speaker 1: who have never really had any incidents with anything like that,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and you get a little paralyzed at first until you realize, hey,
- 9:08Speaker 1: this probably isn't what it appears to be.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Yes, And it's hard to get out of that mindset
- 9:15Speaker 4: in the middle of.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It, because you're spiraling.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And they hire people with PhDs to write scripts to
- 9:25Speaker 4: get you into that mindset of panic and rush and
- 9:30Speaker 4: not thinking fully. They actually hire people to help them
- 9:34Speaker 4: come up with the scenarios to get you into that.
- 9:38Speaker 1: That is just craziness. But once again, be very very careful,
- 9:43Speaker 1: more very very careful. Now, if I have been scammed
- 9:46Speaker 1: or I believe I have been scammed, you said contact
- 9:49Speaker 1: was really the first thing you need with your financial institution.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Can we elaborate on that a little Yes.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Call us if it's the weekend Truity Answers. You can
- 10:01Speaker 4: send us a message on the weekend and we have
- 10:03Speaker 4: people monitoring those. Call the number on the back of
- 10:07Speaker 4: your card. If it has something to do with your card,
- 10:09Speaker 4: they can help you. You can go in and change
- 10:13Speaker 4: your digital banking passwords, so if you think someone's in there,
- 10:17Speaker 4: go ahead and reset that because that will kick them
- 10:19Speaker 4: out and stop them from doing anything else. And let
- 10:22Speaker 4: us know first thing Monday, and we can get things
- 10:25Speaker 4: rolling and stopped and just trying to help you out.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, one of the things that you brought
- 10:31Speaker 1: up to us when we were talking just before we
- 10:34Speaker 1: went on the year, is that aa RP has a
- 10:38Speaker 1: fraud watch help, like, can you tell us a little
- 10:41Speaker 1: bit about what they offer on top of yes, well
- 10:43Speaker 1: we've already covered yes, so.
- 10:46Speaker 4: ARP does have a fraud helpline, fraud watch. You do
- 10:51Speaker 4: not have to remember with them, it is free to everyone.
- 10:56Speaker 4: They want to get.
- 10:58Speaker 3: After these criminals just as much as we.
- 11:01Speaker 4: They have a phone service you can call and they'll
- 11:05Speaker 4: start walking you through the next steps. They can call
- 11:09Speaker 4: the financial institution with you on the line with them
- 11:12Speaker 4: to kind of go over everything. They have support groups
- 11:15Speaker 4: because a lot of times you're really invested in whatever
- 11:19Speaker 4: scam it was that you had going and it can
- 11:22Speaker 4: be a lot on you mentally and especially if you
- 11:24Speaker 4: lost a lot of money. So they have support groups
- 11:26Speaker 4: out there for other people that have unfortunately fallen victim
- 11:30Speaker 4: to the scams as well. You can sign up to
- 11:33Speaker 4: get i think it's twice a week messages about scams
- 11:37Speaker 4: going on. They have webinars, They have little conferences you
- 11:41Speaker 4: can go to. Sometimes they have a map, a fraud map,
- 11:47Speaker 4: so you can click on certain areas and see what
- 11:50Speaker 4: frauds being reported around those areas, and you can report
- 11:53Speaker 4: the fraud that happens too as well to add to
- 11:55Speaker 4: that to help protect other people, because yes, it can
- 12:00Speaker 4: be embarrassing and hard to admit that it happened to you,
- 12:03Speaker 4: but the more you talk about it to other people,
- 12:06Speaker 4: the more likely you are to help someone else.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And you're going to find out you're not alone too. Yep.
- 12:12Speaker 4: All of us at some point are going to be
- 12:15Speaker 4: victim to some kind of scam or informations out there. Unfortunately,
- 12:18Speaker 4: I think I've received probably five letters this year saying
- 12:22Speaker 4: my information has been compromised in some data breach. So
- 12:25Speaker 4: I'm just waiting for the day and I have credit
- 12:30Speaker 4: monitoring make sure nothing gets open that I'm not aware of,
- 12:36Speaker 4: or that I can get shut down quickly, constantly looking
- 12:39Speaker 4: at my being information, all of it.
- 12:43Speaker 1: At least, this is really good, And one thing I
- 12:45Speaker 1: like about Truity is that there have been a lot
- 12:48Speaker 1: of steps in the last couple of years, especially to
- 12:51Speaker 1: make sure that electronically cyber wise safe top to bottom.
- 12:56Speaker 1: In fact, the I think the CEO now came from
- 13:02Speaker 1: the cyberside, yes, and it really is keeping a sharp
- 13:06Speaker 1: eye out on protecting the members of the credit union.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So if you're a member of Truity Credit Union, you
- 13:13Speaker 1: got a little extra lawyer of protection coming your way
- 13:16Speaker 1: here because they really know what's going on. Some final thoughts,
- 13:19Speaker 1: can you tell Let's just just kind of summarize it
- 13:21Speaker 1: a little bit here.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Something I want to go back on with the the
- 13:26Speaker 4: job scams. Best advice I have for you right now,
- 13:29Speaker 4: if you're looking for a job and you're on indeed, glassdoor,
- 13:32Speaker 4: whatever it may be, and you find one that sounds
- 13:34Speaker 4: good is go to that company's actual website and look
- 13:39Speaker 4: for their career page there and look for that job hosting.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Because if it's a real job, it'll be out there.
- 13:45Speaker 3: On that page. And if you don't see it, I
- 13:47Speaker 3: probably wouldn't go through with it.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Skip it. Yeah, some bot got in there. Yeah, trust
- 13:52Speaker 2: your instincts.
- 13:54Speaker 1: And I think everybody has that what they call these days,
- 13:57Speaker 1: that Spidey sense.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Yes, this doesn't look yes.
- 14:01Speaker 4: And a lot of times it's when you're saying it
- 14:04Speaker 4: out loud to someone or thinking back through after that
- 14:08Speaker 4: initial contact and as we talk to members and they're like,
- 14:13Speaker 4: we ask them, so, what's going on? And they start
- 14:15Speaker 4: telling us and they go oh that that doesn't seem
- 14:20Speaker 4: right or like that doesn't make sense. Now that you know,
- 14:23Speaker 4: I've kind of stepped back from it a little bit.
- 14:26Speaker 1: So just.
- 14:28Speaker 4: The moment, yeah, breathe, take a moment. And my one
- 14:33Speaker 4: of my final thoughts, never put money in a crypto ATM.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Don't do it. One, don't do it.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I've never heard of one. Now you're telling me that
- 14:43Speaker 2: they actually have these things.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Yes, there's several. There's several in town. There's no need
- 14:49Speaker 4: to go to the crypto ATMs. You can do everything
- 14:52Speaker 4: crypto online. And if someone's instructing you to go put
- 14:56Speaker 4: your money in a crypto ATM, you are unfortunately being
- 15:00Speaker 4: a victim of a scam.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Okay, that's a new one. Well, I tell you what,
- 15:05Speaker 2: thank you.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I always learned something when you guys come in, Yes,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and it's always been very very positive. At least, I
- 15:10Speaker 1: want to thank you very much, very timely advice as
- 15:12Speaker 1: we head into the holidays.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And really for any day.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Three sixty five tell us where we can find true
- 15:18Speaker 1: to Credit Union here in town.
- 15:19Speaker 4: We are located downtown off Johnstone or on seventy five South.
- 15:25Speaker 4: And then we also have a new ITM in Dewey.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you can do just about anything at that.
- 15:32Speaker 3: ITM so all right, Hey, thank you for being here
- 15:35Speaker 3: with us.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Thank you all right, what a blessing, folks. We've got
- 15:38Speaker 1: news coming up in just a moment.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Thanks for listening to one on one with a professional,
- 15:45Speaker 2: A paid presentation at fourteen hundred K one
