- 2:56Speaker 5: It was Tuesday, July 18th. It was hot in Los Angeles.
- 3:00Speaker 5: We were working the night watch out of homicide detail.
- 3:03Speaker 5: My partner's Ben Romero, the boss is Thad Brown, chief
- 3:05Speaker 5: of detectives. My name's Friday. It was 5.35 p.m. when
- 3:09Speaker 5: we got out of the car at Sunset Boulevard and
- 3:11Speaker 5: Paris Avenue and walked down the street to the scene
- 3:14Speaker 5: of the machine gunning, Lupo's Cafe.
- 3:21Speaker 10: Hmm.
- 3:22Speaker 11: Look at that, Joe.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:25Speaker 11: Lift up the whole front of the plane.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Yeah. Hi.
- 3:29Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Romero and Friday, homicide? Oh, I'm Sheldon from Hollywood Division.
- 3:34Speaker 5: Taylor and I picked up the.
- 3:35Speaker 9: Call in our car. Nobody heard.
- 3:37Speaker 5: What's the story? Just a second. It's Captain Elliott. Hold
- 3:39Speaker 5: it a minute, will you, Sheldon? Hi. Hi, Captain. Hmm.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Not much of it left. Sheldon here was in the
- 3:50Speaker 5: cruiser car. He'll fill us in. All right. The intended
- 3:53Speaker 5: victim was Gus Valentine. He's over there with Taylor, my partner. Yeah.
- 3:57Speaker 12: According to Valentine, he stopped in the restaurant here for
- 3:59Speaker 12: a drink. He was in there about 15 minutes, came
- 4:02Speaker 12: out to hail a cab, and this car came around
- 4:04Speaker 12: the corner. Down there is Sunset and Clayton. They ripped
- 4:07Speaker 12: by close to the curb and opened up.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Mm-hmm. There's laundry there on one side of the place
- 4:12Speaker 5: and a dry cleaning joint on the other side. Yes, sir.
- 4:15Speaker 9: Miracle, but nobody was hit.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Did you get anything on the car?
- 4:18Speaker 9: Nothing so far happened so fast nobody got a good
- 4:20Speaker 9: look at it. How about Valentine?
- 4:22Speaker 11: Does he have any idea?
- 4:23Speaker 5: I don't know. Taylor's getting the information. Nobody saw anything?
- 4:26Speaker 5: Any witnesses? Yes, sir. A couple.
- 4:28Speaker 12: Newsboy Tim Benson, the lady in the dry cleaning place,
- 4:34Speaker 12: Agnes Rebard. Neither of them got a license number.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Okay. Okay. Like talk to Valentine? Sheldon, keep the area clear,
- 4:41Speaker 5: will you? Lab men are on their way out. Yes, sir.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Come on.
- 4:50Speaker 9: Well, I told you I had many ideas.
- 4:52Speaker 11: Green Fort Sedan, is that it?
- 4:53Speaker 5: Yeah. Elliott Central Homicide. Yes, sir. This is Mr.
- 4:57Speaker 9: Valentine, the intended victim.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Yeah. This is Sergeant Friday, Sergeant Romero. Sergeant Friday, how
- 5:03Speaker 5: are you? Fine. It's been a long time. Finally got
- 5:06Speaker 5: out of the uniform, huh? Seven years ago.
- 5:09Speaker 9: Who was it, Gus?
- 5:10Speaker 5: If I knew, I'd tell you. I don't like being
- 5:12Speaker 5: shot at. Let's go sit in the car. This way, Valentine.
- 5:15Speaker 5: You want to get him back? All right.
- 5:18Speaker 7: All right.
- 5:27Speaker 5: What's the story, Valentine? How do you mean?
- 5:29Speaker 3: Let's not play it cozy.
- 5:31Speaker 5: Who's after you?
- 5:32Speaker 9: I suppose that's what would have happened if I knew.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Who's carrying the beef? Somebody's unhappy with you. You must
- 5:36Speaker 5: know who. I don't.
- 5:37Speaker 11: You know what kind of a car it was?
- 5:39Speaker 9: I told the other cop over there. A sedan, green Ford.
- 5:42Speaker 5: We're not going to impress you, Valentine. You might as
- 5:43Speaker 5: well know how we peg this kind of thing. Yeah?
- 5:46Speaker 13: We got your number, had it for a long time.
- 5:49Speaker 13: You're all up and down the blotter from Lincoln Heights
- 5:50Speaker 13: to the county jail. You got a record everybody in
- 5:52Speaker 13: this town knows about.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Aren't you a little mixed up? I'm the guy that
- 5:56Speaker 5: got shot at. We know that.
- 5:57Speaker 9: I pay my taxes for protection, not a lecture on
- 6:00Speaker 9: my past.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Let me give you the word, Valentine. I've known you
- 6:03Speaker 5: for a long time, and I've read about you in
- 6:04Speaker 5: the newspapers. I've watched your so-called climb from two-bit penny
- 6:08Speaker 5: anti-rackets all the way up. Now, you've been told more
- 6:09Speaker 5: than once about keeping your nose clean. This is a switch,
- 6:12Speaker 5: isn't it? Man gets shot at, cops read riot act,
- 6:14Speaker 5: innocent victim. Look, we know you, and we know that
- 6:16Speaker 5: crowd you run with. If you want to start a
- 6:17Speaker 5: war around a battlefield, don't pick the streets of Los
- 6:19Speaker 5: Angeles to fight it out.
- 6:20Speaker 14: I don't think I asked for it the way you
- 6:21Speaker 14: meant to.
- 6:22Speaker 5: You did somewhere up and down the line. We know
- 6:25Speaker 5: your operation. You walk the sideline marker all the way.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Always got one foot inside the law.
- 6:29Speaker 15: When you make yourself a target for some punk's machine gun,
- 6:31Speaker 15: that's where you step outside.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Well, what are you going to do, eat me out
- 6:34Speaker 5: and let the man with the machine gun get away?
- 6:35Speaker 5: We'll get him, whether you want to help us or not.
- 6:37Speaker 5: We just don't have the time to run around jamming
- 6:39Speaker 5: a cork in the barrel of every gun in town.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Before you get out of this car, let this sink in.
- 6:43Speaker 13: There's not going to be any innocent people cut down
- 6:45Speaker 13: by bullets that were meant for you.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Oh, I get it.
- 6:47Speaker 9: My tax money's no good, huh?
- 6:48Speaker 5: A pair bigger chunk than most of the clods in
- 6:50Speaker 5: this town. You haven't got a clear title to the
- 6:52Speaker 5: city yet, and until you do, don't set up a
- 6:53Speaker 5: shooting gun.
- 6:54Speaker 2: What do I do, dig a foxhole till you get
- 6:55Speaker 2: ready to tap whoever's taking pot shots at me?
- 6:57Speaker 5: You can tell us who it is.
- 6:58Speaker 9: You got all I know.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Don't you think I'd want him picked up?
- 7:01Speaker 13: I think you're a liar. I think you better square
- 7:03Speaker 13: your beef and knock off this gangster stuff. There's not
- 7:06Speaker 13: going to be any more of this kind of thing, understand?
- 7:07Speaker 5: That's the trouble with civil service.
- 7:09Speaker 9: It makes a big man out of you at 200
- 7:11Speaker 9: bucks a month. I've never passed an.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Exam, but I keep in step. You missed the first
- 7:15Speaker 5: one from the gutter to the sidewalk. All right. Almost
- 7:22Speaker 5: without exception, every city in the United States says it's
- 7:24Speaker 5: Gus Valentine. These men remain out of custody not because
- 7:28Speaker 5: of any lack of law enforcement, but because of their
- 7:31Speaker 5: ability to hide behind the laws which are designed to
- 7:33Speaker 5: protect the innocent and use them to their own advantage.
- 7:37Speaker 5: They operate allowing only the thinnest margin possible between themselves
- 7:41Speaker 5: and the state penitentiary. We drove back to Central Division.
- 7:46Speaker 5: At 6.18 p.m., we were called to the Chief of
- 7:47Speaker 5: Detectives' office.
- 7:48Speaker 9: He wouldn't give you anything, huh?
- 7:50Speaker 5: Not a thing. Usual line of smart talk. It was
- 7:52Speaker 5: ever after I meant business. Our storefronts were a mess.
- 7:55Speaker 9: Yeah, they won't quit now. Just a minute. What's that
- 7:58Speaker 9: intelligence number?
- 7:59Speaker 5: 2821. Oh, yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 12: This is Brown. Captain White gone home? No, I asked
- 8:10Speaker 12: him to come up to the office, would you please?
- 8:12Speaker 5: Thanks. If you do manage to tag Valentine, it could
- 8:15Speaker 5: cause a pretty sour mess.
- 8:16Speaker 12: He's got enough flunkies around to parlay it into a
- 8:19Speaker 12: fair-sized shooting war. See them started on less.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Was there any chance of pulling Valentine in until things
- 8:24Speaker 5: simmered down?
- 8:25Speaker 9: No chance. We've got nothing on him. Nothing we can prove.
- 8:28Speaker 5: He's got a.
- 8:28Speaker 11: Few boys close to him. Maybe one of them could
- 8:30Speaker 11: tell us.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Same two lawyers work for all of them. If we'd
- 8:34Speaker 5: pull him in, they'd be out in an hour on
- 8:35Speaker 5: the wrist. You want to see me?
- 8:37Speaker 9: Yeah, why?
- 8:38Speaker 5: Sit down. I'm at Valentine's shooting this afternoon. Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 9: What's your guess?
- 8:44Speaker 5: There's been some talk. We heard he was hot.
- 8:47Speaker 6: You knew that?
- 8:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 9: The way we figured, he's getting too big for his pants.
- 8:53Speaker 9: He's coming up fast. Stepped on a lot of toes
- 8:56Speaker 9: on the way. Shouldn't be too tough to find out why.
- 8:59Speaker 5: That's half of it. If we get that much, maybe
- 9:01Speaker 5: we can find out who. You got a big field
- 9:03Speaker 5: to pick from. I can find you a dozen possibles.
- 9:06Speaker 9: We don't need a dozen. All we want are the
- 9:07Speaker 9: ones in that car this afternoon.
- 9:09Speaker 11: Who do you figure, Captain Hoy?
- 9:11Speaker 9: Well, I kind of go along with Joe. Like I said,
- 9:14Speaker 9: I think maybe we'll be able to peg the fly
- 9:16Speaker 9: a little faster. And we can go from there.
- 9:18Speaker 5: All right. Well, let's take what we know about the guy.
- 9:22Speaker 9: Let's just take this past year. We know he's got
- 9:26Speaker 9: more than a good share of the Mexican narcotics traffic.
- 9:29Speaker 9: That means he's taking business from the Eastern Syndicate.
- 9:32Speaker 5: That makes one of those boys a candidate. That's right.
- 9:34Speaker 9: Then there's the pinball machines. He's giving Big Ernie Jacobs
- 9:38Speaker 9: and Monk Watson a big push on those. And puts
- 9:40Speaker 9: them in the running. That's a long list. The horses,
- 9:44Speaker 9: fancy poker games, prostitution, the works. He's squeezing them all.
- 9:48Speaker 9: A lot of guys could be shooting at him with
- 9:50Speaker 9: a machine gun.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Where do we start?
- 9:52Speaker 9: Leg work.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Lots of it. Fast.
- 9:54Speaker 9: We'll start nosing around. See what we can pick up. Friday,
- 9:57Speaker 9: you and Romero can give us a hand there.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Yes, sir. All right with you, William? Fine.
- 10:01Speaker 12: I don't have to tell you. We've got to move
- 10:03Speaker 12: as quick as we can. We've got a lot of
- 10:04Speaker 12: places to hit, and we haven't got too much time.
- 10:06Speaker 9: We'll keep Valentine under surveillance to make sure he doesn't
- 10:09Speaker 9: try to square things with a gun.
- 10:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 10:12Speaker 5: This is one the taxpayers wouldn't understand. Yeah. Trying to
- 10:15Speaker 5: keep a guy alive that'd be more dangerous dead. Wednesday,
- 10:23Speaker 5: July 19th. Ben and I started making the rounds to
- 10:26Speaker 5: find out why someone was out to get Gus Valentine.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Captain was right. The list of his enemies was long.
- 10:32Speaker 5: For two days, we talked to gamblers and bartenders at
- 10:36Speaker 5: the usual hangouts. The few slim leads we picked up
- 10:39Speaker 5: led nowhere. Saturday, July 22nd, we met with one of
- 10:43Speaker 5: Ben's informants, a bar boy at a cafe out on
- 10:46Speaker 5: Santa Monica Boulevard. Here we go.
- 10:51Speaker 11: That's him over there. At that table.
- 10:53Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 10:55Speaker 11: Jerry? How are you?
- 10:57Speaker 9: Hiya, Ben.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Grab a chair.
- 11:00Speaker 11: You know my partner, don't you? Sure.
- 11:01Speaker 9: Sit down, Joe.
- 11:02Speaker 11: Hi.
- 11:04Speaker 9: Want a beer?
- 11:05Speaker 5: No, no thanks. We're working. Coke? Okay. One's enough. Here
- 11:10Speaker 5: you go.
- 11:10Speaker 9: Good and cold. Doctor cut me down one beer a day.
- 11:26Speaker 5: It's a spot.
- 11:29Speaker 9: On a hot day, don't it?
- 11:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 11: What about Valentine?
- 11:33Speaker 5: What about him?
- 11:34Speaker 11: You hear anything since I phoned you?
- 11:36Speaker 5: A couple of things.
- 11:37Speaker 9: Word's getting around he's a welcher. Horses?
- 11:40Speaker 5: I don't know. Big money. Hasn't paid off yet.
- 11:42Speaker 11: What does he owe?
- 11:43Speaker 9: I can give you the name of one of them.
- 11:45Speaker 9: Sal Tapper.
- 11:45Speaker 11: I don't know him.
- 11:47Speaker 14: Meat packing business, wholesaler. Got a big plant down at
- 11:49Speaker 14: 54th and Commercial. Owns a little neighborhood bar.
- 11:52Speaker 9: That's where he spends most of his time.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Where's that? Gardena.
- 11:56Speaker 9: Calls it the Mile High.
- 11:57Speaker 11: What about this salt trapper?
- 11:59Speaker 9: What do you mean?
- 12:00Speaker 11: How close is he to Valentine?
- 12:01Speaker 5: You mean one of his boys? No.
- 12:04Speaker 9: Valentine's his book, that's all.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Supposing Valentine owed him a wad of dough, would he
- 12:08Speaker 5: push his point?
- 12:09Speaker 12: How do you mean?
- 12:10Speaker 5: Would he use pressure to collect?
- 12:12Speaker 12: Maybe a meat cleaver, not a machine gun. I don't
- 12:14Speaker 12: figure him in on that Tuesday caper.
- 12:17Speaker 14: Sure you don't want this set of coke?
- 12:19Speaker 5: No, thank you.
- 12:19Speaker 11: What time you go to work? Plenty of time.
- 12:21Speaker 9: One bottle of beer ain't hardly enough.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Anything rumbles about the shooting? How do you mean? Anything
- 12:30Speaker 5: worth repeating?
- 12:31Speaker 9: Everybody says the same thing.
- 12:33Speaker 5: He's got it coming.
- 12:34Speaker 11: Who is everybody?
- 12:35Speaker 9: Homeowners, neighborhood Joes.
- 12:37Speaker 11: They got it all take. What's the popular guest?
- 12:39Speaker 9: A dame.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Well, that's about it, huh, Jerry?
- 12:43Speaker 9: That's about it.
- 12:44Speaker 5: What's your guest?
- 12:45Speaker 14: Fresh out, I don't know. How come you guys are
- 12:47Speaker 14: so worried about Gus Valentine? I didn't think you cared
- 12:50Speaker 14: whether he lived or died.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Either way, we're in trouble. We left the cafe on
- 12:58Speaker 5: Santa Monica Boulevard and drove out to Gardena to the
- 13:01Speaker 5: Mile High Bar. It was a typical neighborhood tavern with
- 13:04Speaker 5: the windows painted in black except for two small ovals
- 13:07Speaker 5: in the center of each window. They were filled with
- 13:10Speaker 5: beer signs and red neon. The cloth sign advertised shuffleboard
- 13:15Speaker 5: and life-size television. Inside, the walls were covered with alpine
- 13:19Speaker 5: mountain climbers trying to fight their way up a mountain
- 13:21Speaker 5: that looked twice as steep as the Matterhorn.
- 13:24Speaker 9: Will you send nickels, will you, Leonard?
- 13:28Speaker 11: Can you tell us where we can find Sal Tapper?
- 13:30Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm here.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Thanks, Len.
- 13:34Speaker 9: What do you want?
- 13:37Speaker 5: Police officers. I'd like to talk to you.
- 13:39Speaker 9: Sure, what about?
- 13:40Speaker 5: Gus Valentine. Yeah?
- 13:47Speaker 9: He owes me money.
- 13:49Speaker 11: Is that all you've got against him?
- 13:51Speaker 9: As much as he owes me, that's enough.
- 14:01Speaker 5: How much money does he owe you? Enough. How long
- 14:04Speaker 5: has he been booking for you?
- 14:06Speaker 9: I didn't say he was booking for me.
- 14:07Speaker 5: No, we did.
- 14:09Speaker 11: About two years.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Come on.
- 14:10Speaker 7: Come on. Get it.
- 14:16Speaker 5: 4,000 on the first ball. I got to do better
- 14:22Speaker 5: than that.
- 14:26Speaker 11: Where were you Tuesday afternoon? At the packing house.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Can you prove it?
- 14:30Speaker 9: Would I say it if I couldn't prove it?
- 14:37Speaker 15: When that little gate up there turns green and you
- 14:39Speaker 15: go through it, you get an extra ball.
- 14:41Speaker 5: It's red, it doubles your score, but it's real tough
- 14:44Speaker 5: to get in there. How long has Valentine owed you money?
- 14:47Speaker 5: All a little over a week. When did he say
- 14:48Speaker 5: he'd pay you?
- 14:49Speaker 11: He didn't say.
- 14:50Speaker 5: He said he was trying to raise the dog.
- 14:53Speaker 11: You're the only one he owes?
- 14:55Speaker 5: No. All right.
- 15:05Speaker 15: There's a couple of more guys in town.
- 15:10Speaker 9: You know who they are?
- 15:11Speaker 5: No. How do you know he owes somebody besides you?
- 15:13Speaker 9: I heard.
- 15:14Speaker 5: Do you say why he hasn't paid up?
- 15:16Speaker 11: All right.
- 15:25Speaker 5: What'd you say? Did he say why he hasn't paid up?
- 15:28Speaker 5: I told you.
- 15:28Speaker 15: He said he was trying to raise the money.
- 15:29Speaker 5: You sure you haven't tried to put the bite on him?
- 15:31Speaker 5: Sure I have. Sure I have. I want the dog.
- 15:35Speaker 5: But I didn't gun him.
- 15:36Speaker 11: Somebody did.
- 15:37Speaker 9: Yeah, I know. No, it wasn't me. You had a reason.
- 15:39Speaker 12: It's a lot of people.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Yeah. We're looking for the one with the machine gun.
- 15:43Speaker 9: Well, I can't help you there.
- 15:44Speaker 7: Oh, come on.
- 15:48Speaker 5: Get in there.
- 15:54Speaker 14: Hey!
- 15:55Speaker 11: Hey, look at that. Free ball.
- 15:57Speaker 9: 26,000.
- 15:59Speaker 5: That's a real tough machine to beat.
- 16:02Speaker 11: And where did you say you were choosing?
- 16:03Speaker 15: At my packing plant, 54th and Commercial.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Okay. How long have you known Gus Valentine? About four years.
- 16:13Speaker 9: I met him at a party out in Hollywood.
- 16:15Speaker 5: It's the first time I've ever known him to Welch. Mm-hmm. 27,000.
- 16:30Speaker 15: I'm not doing so good, am I?
- 16:34Speaker 5: I don't know. It depends on where you were Tuesday.
- 16:36Speaker 7: 12.30 p.m.
- 16:42Speaker 5: We talked with the superintendent of Tapper's Meatpacking House. He
- 16:45Speaker 5: told us that Saul Tapper had been there all day
- 16:48Speaker 5: when Gus Valentine was shot at. We talked to several
- 16:50Speaker 5: employees of the plant. They corroborated his story. We checked
- 16:54Speaker 5: Tapper out and found him to be a fairly respectable
- 16:56Speaker 5: businessman who gambled a great deal on the side, but
- 16:59Speaker 5: we felt reasonably sure that he had no part in
- 17:01Speaker 5: the shooting. We knew that if we could run down
- 17:03Speaker 5: the others to whom Valentine owed money, we'd be closer
- 17:06Speaker 5: to finding out why he was being shot at and
- 17:08Speaker 5: eventually get to the right man. 1.45 p.m. Ben and
- 17:13Speaker 5: I went upstairs to the eighth floor of the city hall,
- 17:15Speaker 5: the lunchroom. We had a sandwich and coffee.
- 17:19Speaker 11: Too close to dinner to have a piece of that pie,
- 17:21Speaker 11: isn't it?
- 17:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I'd say so. Hand me another napkin, will you?
- 17:25Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Here.
- 17:26Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 17:28Speaker 11: Think you'd do any good to talk to Valentine again?
- 17:30Speaker 5: Maybe, I doubt it. He's not going to tell us anything.
- 17:33Speaker 11: I figure we're on the right track. A lot of
- 17:35Speaker 11: reasons why he might be a target, but this welching business,
- 17:38Speaker 11: that's new to him.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Could be.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Are you Sergeant Friday?
- 17:43Speaker 5: That's right.
- 17:44Speaker 8: Telephone.
- 17:44Speaker 5: Wait a minute. Go away, DeAnthony. No, you got the check.
- 17:47Speaker 5: I'll get the tip.
- 17:48Speaker 11: All right.
- 17:54Speaker 5: Slide that phone over, will you? Oh, yeah. Thank you. Friday.
- 17:58Speaker 5: Tell it. Come down to Chief Brown's office right away.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 18:01Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 18:09Speaker 11: Pie sure did look good.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Let's get that elevator. Yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 11: Hey, who called?
- 18:15Speaker 5: The skipper. He wants us to go to Chief Brown's house.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Campbell Street floor, please.
- 18:19Speaker 2: What's up?
- 18:20Speaker 5: I don't know. You make the rounds again tonight?
- 18:22Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 18:22Speaker 5: A couple places we can hit in the south end
- 18:24Speaker 5: of town. I called Charlie Flint's place this afternoon. Maybe
- 18:27Speaker 5: he'll have something for us.
- 18:28Speaker 11: Yeah, I hope so.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Come on.
- 18:35Speaker 11: I wish now I'd had that pie. I'm still hungry.
- 18:38Speaker 5: I got a candy bar in my desk. You can
- 18:39Speaker 5: have that.
- 18:40Speaker 11: I can't eat those chewy bars in late.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Oh, it's some kind of a fudge bar.
- 18:44Speaker 6: Oh, huh.
- 18:48Speaker 9: Come in.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Yes, sir. Get over to Georgia Street right away. Why?
- 18:52Speaker 9: Gosh, Valentine, they did it again.
- 18:53Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 18:54Speaker 9: This time they didn't miss.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Oh.
- 19:06Speaker 11: You are listening to Dragnet.
- 19:08Speaker 6: For the step-by-step solution to an actual police case. Here,
- 19:13Speaker 6: step-by-step are the reasons why Fatima has more than doubled
- 19:17Speaker 6: its smokers from coast to coast.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Step one.
- 19:21Speaker 2: The name Fatima has always stood for the best in
- 19:25Speaker 2: cigarette quality.
- 19:26Speaker 9: Step two.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Long cigarette smokers discover.
- 19:29Speaker 9: Fatima as a much different.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Much better flavor and aroma.
- 19:33Speaker 5: Step three.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Long cigarette smokers find Fatima extra mild. Fatima is the
- 19:40Speaker 2: long cigarette which contains the finest Turkish and domestic tobaccos
- 19:45Speaker 2: superbly blended to make Fatima extra mild.
- 19:49Speaker 9: And that's why.
- 19:50Speaker 6: more and more smokers every day agree it's wise to
- 19:55Speaker 6: smoke extra mild Fatima.
- 19:58Speaker 8: It's wise to smoke extra mild Fatima.
- 20:02Speaker 6: Yes, the name Fatima on that golden yellow package is
- 20:06Speaker 6: your insurance of an extra mild smoke.
- 20:09Speaker 2: So enjoy king-size Fatima, the best of all long cigarettes.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Saturday, July 22nd, 5.30 p.m., We drove to the Georgia
- 20:28Speaker 7: Street Receiving Hospital and went up to the third floor.
- 20:30Speaker 5: We talked to the doctor in charge who told us
- 20:32Speaker 5: that two slugs had been taken from Gus Valentine's right
- 20:35Speaker 5: leg and one from his right shoulder. They had been
- 20:38Speaker 5: marked for identification. He was in fair condition. We talked
- 20:42Speaker 5: with the patrolman who made the ambulance follow-up. They told
- 20:45Speaker 5: us Valentine had been shot as he entered his apartment
- 20:47Speaker 5: house garage. There were no eyewitnesses. We went in and
- 20:51Speaker 5: talked to Valentine.
- 20:52Speaker 11: You told the officers that the guy who shot you
- 20:54Speaker 11: was on foot.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Yeah. Who was it?
- 20:57Speaker 9: Couldn't tell.
- 20:58Speaker 5: You haven't any idea who it could have been?
- 21:00Speaker 13: No.
- 21:01Speaker 5: You don't expect us to swallow that again, do you?
- 21:03Speaker 9: I don't care either way.
- 21:04Speaker 11: Why don't you pay up what you owe?
- 21:06Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 21:07Speaker 11: You owe some big money you haven't paid off.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Where'd you get that? That's the word going around. Looks
- 21:13Speaker 5: to us like either pay up or get shot up.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Did I ask for advice? No, and here's something else
- 21:16Speaker 5: you didn't ask for. Twice in one week you've been
- 21:18Speaker 5: mixed up in shooting scrapes. We told you this city
- 21:20Speaker 5: doesn't belong to you. I don't claim ownership.
- 21:22Speaker 6: Now listen.
- 21:23Speaker 5: We've been over this before and this is the last time.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Don't push us any courage. We know you talk big
- 21:27Speaker 5: and you haven't got the guts to go along with it. Yeah, sure. Now,
- 21:29Speaker 5: come on. Who's shooting at you?
- 21:30Speaker 11: I know your phone number.
- 21:31Speaker 5: I'll call you if I need help. I'll take care
- 21:33Speaker 5: of this myself. Valentine, the first time you pull a
- 21:35Speaker 5: cap gun, we're going to sit on you. If there's
- 21:37Speaker 5: any retaliating, we'll do it. I'm tired of sitting like
- 21:39Speaker 5: a duck on a pond. Then tell us who's gunning
- 21:41Speaker 5: for you.
- 21:41Speaker 11: That's between me and them.
- 21:43Speaker 5: I'll meet them when I'm ready.
- 21:44Speaker 9: All right.
- 21:45Speaker 5: We're through talking. When we get to the bottom of
- 21:47Speaker 5: this and find out who's been doing all the shooting,
- 21:49Speaker 5: we'll have an answer. And if we find out you've
- 21:51Speaker 5: been withholding evidence, it's going to go hard for you, understand? Yeah, sure.
- 21:54Speaker 9: Now, leave me alone.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Come on. Yeah. I better call the office.
- 22:08Speaker 9: Homicide, Graham.
- 22:12Speaker 5: Captain Elliott there. I'll see.
- 22:15Speaker 11: Captain, will you take two?
- 22:18Speaker 10: Elliott.
- 22:18Speaker 5: This is Friday. Checking in on the Valentine thing. What's
- 22:21Speaker 5: his story? Couldn't get anything out of him. He isn't
- 22:23Speaker 5: hurt bad. Right leg and shoulder. All right. Here's something
- 22:27Speaker 5: you run down. Yeah?
- 22:28Speaker 10: Got a tip from White and Intelligence. He's got a
- 22:30Speaker 10: man out at Freddy's Fish and Chips on Slauson. Says
- 22:33Speaker 10: a couple of guys in there blowing off about Valentine.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Who are they? Billy Keel and Tony Farrar. They're not
- 22:39Speaker 5: on Valentine's team. That's right.
- 22:41Speaker 10: White's man says the party's getting rough out there. You
- 22:43Speaker 10: or Romero better follow up on it. Right. Another thing,
- 22:46Speaker 10: if it looks like anything, you better bring him in
- 22:48Speaker 10: for questioning.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Okay. Check on me when you get in. Right. Let's go.
- 22:53Speaker 11: What is it?
- 22:53Speaker 5: Keelan Farrar. Skipper wants us to pick him up and
- 22:56Speaker 5: bring him in for questioning.
- 22:57Speaker 11: What do they know about the shooter?
- 22:58Speaker 5: They know enough to talk about it.
- 22:59Speaker 7: 7 p.m.
- 23:04Speaker 5: We located Freddy's Fish and Chips place on Slauson near
- 23:07Speaker 5: Montgomery Street. A dozen or so tables at the back
- 23:10Speaker 5: of the restaurant were already taken to the overflow lined
- 23:13Speaker 5: up too deep at the bar. The man from intelligence
- 23:17Speaker 5: detail was down at the far end of the steam
- 23:18Speaker 5: table nursing a cheese sandwich. He motioned us over and
- 23:22Speaker 5: pointed out Billy Keel and Tony Farrar. They were sitting
- 23:25Speaker 5: at one of the tables along with four other men
- 23:27Speaker 5: drinking Boilermakers and eating French fried potatoes. Ben and I
- 23:31Speaker 5: made our way through the crowd toward the back tables. Sorry.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Pardon me. Can I get through here, please? All right.
- 23:42Speaker 9: So it figures.
- 23:43Speaker 10: Donut?
- 23:45Speaker 5: You, Billy Keel?
- 23:46Speaker 11: That's right. Which one is Tony Farrar? He's getting a beer.
- 23:52Speaker 5: What do you want? Police officers want to talk to
- 23:54Speaker 5: you in Farrar downtown.
- 23:56Speaker 6: What's the matter?
- 23:57Speaker 5: I'd like to ask you a few questions. I want
- 23:58Speaker 5: to get your hat.
- 24:00Speaker 15: You got any questions, you can ask them here.
- 24:02Speaker 11: Hey, Vic, how about buying a round? Come on, Gio,
- 24:04Speaker 11: let's go.
- 24:05Speaker 15: I got nothing to tell you now.
- 24:06Speaker 9: Let me alone.
- 24:07Speaker 5: There's two ways to go downtown, the hard way and
- 24:09Speaker 5: the easy way. Let's take the easy way.
- 24:13Speaker 11: All right.
- 24:13Speaker 9: This way.
- 24:14Speaker 12: Okay.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Dr. Hope! Hello? Joe, I got Ferraro. You go in
- 25:12Speaker 5: that back way.
- 25:15Speaker 9: I'll get him.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Wait a minute, Joe. Let go of me. All right. Stop.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Come on, Ferraro. Come on. You all right, Joe? Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 11: You're bleeding pretty bad.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I know. Let's get him to the car. Look
- 25:37Speaker 5: at your suit. It's ripped to pieces.
- 25:41Speaker 11: My wife's going to.
- 25:44Speaker 7: Kill me.
- 25:46Speaker 5: One of the officers in the ambulance follow-up drove our
- 25:50Speaker 5: car back to the city hall. Tony Farrar and Billy
- 25:53Speaker 5: Keel were taken to Georgia Street Receiving Hospital for emergency treatment.
- 25:57Speaker 5: We went in the same ambulance. Ben had a broken
- 26:00Speaker 5: index finger, a two-inch cut in his scalp, and a
- 26:03Speaker 5: deep gax in his right thigh. I had five stitches
- 26:06Speaker 5: taken in my upper right arm and three above.
- 26:08Speaker 9: My left eye.
- 26:09Speaker 5: My right eye was swollen shut. A man from intelligence
- 26:12Speaker 5: detail was taken to the PNF ward to be treated
- 26:14Speaker 5: for a minor concussion. It was 9.15 p.m. when we
- 26:18Speaker 5: got back to the city hall, the interrogation room. How
- 26:23Speaker 5: about it, Shield? What? What do you know about the
- 26:26Speaker 5: Valentine shooting?
- 26:27Speaker 9: I don't know anything about it.
- 26:28Speaker 5: You're worried?
- 26:30Speaker 11: About what?
- 26:31Speaker 5: You tell us. You started that fight out there.
- 26:34Speaker 11: I didn't see any reason to go downtown. Does Valentine
- 26:36Speaker 11: owe you any money?
- 26:37Speaker 5: No. You've been talking a lot.
- 26:40Speaker 9: Any law against that?
- 26:42Speaker 5: Why'd you shoot Gus Valentine?
- 26:43Speaker 11: I didn't shoot him. And you account for your time
- 26:46Speaker 11: Tuesday afternoon? I don't have to answer that. Where were
- 26:48Speaker 11: you this afternoon? My lawyer's coming in.
- 26:50Speaker 9: Ask him.
- 26:51Speaker 5: How much money does Valentine owe you? You ever see
- 26:56Speaker 5: this before?
- 27:01Speaker 11: I don't even know what it is.
- 27:02Speaker 5: You found that machine gun in your apartment.
- 27:05Speaker 11: Doesn't belong to me.
- 27:06Speaker 5: We got your car downstairs. Green Ford sedan.
- 27:09Speaker 9: Doesn't belong to me.
- 27:11Speaker 5: White slip's got your name on it. Here's something else
- 27:13Speaker 5: with your name on it.
- 27:14Speaker 10: Two chits for $ 750 signed by Gus Valentine.
- 27:17Speaker 11: Money he owes you and the horses.
- 27:19Speaker 5: You shot him, didn't you?
- 27:20Speaker 11: I don't see how you can prove it.
- 27:22Speaker 5: I'll tell you how. We ran this Tommy gun through
- 27:24Speaker 5: the crime lab.
- 27:25Speaker 10: We dug the same slugs out of the front of
- 27:26Speaker 10: those stores where you.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Tried to kill Valentine.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Your prints are all over the gun. How much more
- 27:31Speaker 5: do you want? It's not my gun. All we got
- 27:33Speaker 5: to do is find the. 45 you used this afternoon
- 27:35Speaker 5: and match it up with the slugs we dug out
- 27:36Speaker 5: of Valentine's leg and, mister, you'll be away for a
- 27:38Speaker 5: long time.
- 27:41Speaker 9: All right.
- 27:43Speaker 11: We used the Tommy gun.
- 27:44Speaker 5: We didn't hit him.
- 27:45Speaker 15: Didn't try. Only wanted to scare him. I got tired
- 27:48Speaker 15: of waiting for my dough. I got no use for it, Welch.
- 27:51Speaker 15: What about this afternoon?
- 27:52Speaker 5: No, sir.
- 27:53Speaker 15: Me and Farad didn't have nothing to do with that.
- 27:55Speaker 15: I'll take the machine gun, Rapp, but it wasn't us
- 27:56Speaker 15: this afternoon.
- 27:57Speaker 9: Elliot, Roddy, step outside a minute.
- 27:59Speaker 5: Yeah. Valentine. Yeah. Somebody just blew his hospital room full
- 28:07Speaker 5: of holes. It took us 17 minutes with red light
- 28:14Speaker 5: and siren to get to the Ferndale Sanitarium where Gus
- 28:17Speaker 5: Valentine was recovering from his gunshot wounds. Three cruiser cars
- 28:21Speaker 5: were out front when we pulled up. We went to
- 28:22Speaker 5: room 12 in the west wing. There's the doctor, Joe. Yeah.
- 28:30Speaker 5: How is he, doctor?
- 28:31Speaker 9: He was dead when we got in here.
- 28:32Speaker 6: He had a private nurse.
- 28:34Speaker 9: Shot her, too.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Dead. Anyone else hurt? It was visiting hours. Some woman
- 28:38Speaker 5: was in there talking to him. She got hit. We're
- 28:41Speaker 5: treating her down in the emergency room.
- 28:43Speaker 10: Appreciate it, doctor, if you keep your staff out of
- 28:45Speaker 10: the room here until we finish our investigation.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Yes, sir. Thank you. Some working sign.
- 28:50Speaker 11: Mm-hmm. He didn't fool this time.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Too bad he wouldn't give us more help.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:02Speaker 5: We're no worse off than we were. We still have
- 29:05Speaker 5: to find out who it was without him.
- 29:06Speaker 11: I hope we can get to him before Valentine's crowd
- 29:09Speaker 11: starts shooting back.
- 29:10Speaker 5: We got to. Anyway, this cancels out his debts. You
- 29:14Speaker 5: know his record? Yeah. He owed a lot more than
- 29:17Speaker 5: he could ever pay.
- 29:17Speaker 7: The story you have just heard was true.
- 29:29Speaker 9: Only the names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 29:33Speaker 6: On October 26th, trial was held in Superior Court, Department 97,
- 29:38Speaker 6: City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 29:41Speaker 9: In a moment, the results of that trial.
- 29:43Speaker 2: It's amazing how many long cigarette smokers are changing to Fatima.
- 29:48Speaker 5: Here is the actual report.
- 29:50Speaker 4: From coast to coast, king-sized Fatima has more than doubled
- 29:54Speaker 4: its smokers.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yes, more and more smokers every day are discovering that
- 29:58Speaker 2: Fatima is the best of all long cigarettes.
- 30:02Speaker 6: Long cigarette smokers find Fatima has a much different, much
- 30:06Speaker 6: better flavor and aroma.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Long cigarette smokers find that Fatima is extra mild because
- 30:13Speaker 2: it's the long cigarette which contains the finest, Turkish and
- 30:17Speaker 2: domestic tobaccos, superbly blended to make it extra mild.
- 30:22Speaker 6: So enjoy Extra Mild Fatima, best of all long cigarettes.
- 30:28Speaker 2: It's wise to smoke Extra Mild Fatima.
- 30:32Speaker 8: It's wise to smoke Extra Mild Fatima.
- 30:46Speaker 6: Billy Keel and Tony Farrar were tried and convicted of
- 30:49Speaker 6: assault with intent to commit murder. They were filed on
- 30:52Speaker 6: by the federal authorities, Bureau of Alcohol and Tax Unit,
- 30:55Speaker 6: for the illegal possession of a machine gun and were
- 30:58Speaker 6: found guilty in federal court. Because they were both in
- 31:01Speaker 6: custody at the time of Gus Valentine's murder, they were
- 31:03Speaker 6: cleared of any complicity of the crime. Valentine's killer was
- 31:07Speaker 6: still at large.
