- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Bondi Rescue. Well, actually, before we get into that,
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hoppo's here from Bondi Rescue, but you are just munching
- 0:09Speaker 2: away on a Porto's.
- 0:10Speaker 3: In front of him. This is my favorite morning so
- 0:13Speaker 3: far on radio, a Porto's for breakfast.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm good, man. You're doing something with the Porto's, right?
- 0:18Speaker 2: They're bringing the burger back to 1986. Is that when
- 0:21Speaker 2: it came out?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's when it first came out. It was something
- 0:25Speaker 1: back in Bondi and the lifeguards sort of got on
- 0:27Speaker 1: board when it started and Went up there and we
- 0:30Speaker 1: pretty much started eating it and then it went from there.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So $ 2.
- 0:33Speaker 2: 86 it's going to be. That's my birth year. Yeah,
- 0:37Speaker 2: so Porto takes a Bondi burger back to 1986 with
- 0:41Speaker 2: $ 2. 86 burgers for one day only exclusively via the Porto
- 0:47Speaker 2: app in your muncher. Is it your favourite, Porto's?
- 0:49Speaker 3: Porto's is by far my favourite, yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It's my....
- 0:53Speaker 3: Fast food of choice. In my head, it's the healthier
- 0:56Speaker 3: version of most fast food places.
- 0:59Speaker 2: It's healthier, right, Hopper?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it is healthy. I've had about 40 in the
- 1:02Speaker 1: last week. And you're still looking slim.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Hey, how is the beach going? You guys are going
- 1:08Speaker 2: to get very busy in about a month, yeah, as
- 1:10Speaker 2: it starts heating up.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I reckon it's already started, right?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah. We had a.
- 1:14Speaker 3: beautiful weekend.
- 1:15Speaker 2: In Sydney over the weekend yeah is it already busy
- 1:17Speaker 2: or is Bondi just busy year.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Round Bondi's busy all year round but I pretty much
- 1:22Speaker 1: I worked the weekend it was pretty busy down there
- 1:24Speaker 1: the kite festival was on so there's thousands of people
- 1:27Speaker 1: there but Yeah, it's starting to pick up now. Now
- 1:29Speaker 1: the weather's getting good.
- 1:30Speaker 2: How are we feeling about the sharks? I mean, obviously
- 1:33Speaker 2: there were a number of attacks over summer and then
- 1:36Speaker 2: that poor lady at Coogee Beach. That was only, that
- 1:39Speaker 2: was during winter. And now you guys have gone and
- 1:41Speaker 2: done these drones. And for our Melbourne listeners, the drones
- 1:46Speaker 2: are on every Sydney beach, like not 24 hours a day,
- 1:49Speaker 2: but every day, right?
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah, they're on the beaches every day, going out and
- 1:53Speaker 1: having a look for the sharks to make sure there's,
- 1:55Speaker 1: you know, we can monitor them. But pretty much... Sharks
- 1:58Speaker 1: have been around there ever since I've been growing up
- 2:01Speaker 1: as a kid.
- 2:01Speaker 2: You've seen many?
- 2:02Speaker 1: You see a few here and there, but they all
- 2:04Speaker 1: go under you. It's very hard to see most of
- 2:06Speaker 1: the time. So now they go in looking for them,
- 2:08Speaker 1: it seems like there's more sharks. Right.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Do you think that there should be shark nets, and
- 2:12Speaker 3: do you think they should be in place all year round?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Oh, look, they've got all different systems in place. There's
- 2:19Speaker 1: the shark nets, there's the drum lines, there's the drones.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 1: We're just trying to do our best to keep everyone
- 2:25Speaker 1: safe when they go under the water.
- 2:26Speaker 3: What do you think has changed, though? Because obviously there's
- 2:30Speaker 3: been quite a few shark attacks lately, and up until
- 2:35Speaker 3: the last couple of, let's say last year, you didn't
- 2:38Speaker 3: really hear about so many, especially not consecutively as well.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Do you think something's changed, like the water conditions, climate change?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Do you think there's anything in particular that's happened?
- 2:49Speaker 1: No. No one's really put their finger on it, but,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know, back in the 1920s, there was a fair
- 2:55Speaker 1: few shark attacks, so that's 100 years now. So is
- 2:57Speaker 1: there a cycle there? We don't really know, but it
- 3:01Speaker 1: could be something. Most of the time, there's chasing seals
- 3:03Speaker 1: and a lot of bait ball fish comes in and
- 3:07Speaker 1: that drags the sharks in feeding.
- 3:09Speaker 2: So are these drones helping you guys, like you're a
- 3:11Speaker 2: fan of them? It's given you a warning before?
- 3:14Speaker 1: Well, it's just identifying if a shark is in the
- 3:16Speaker 1: bay at the time and then we can either identify
- 3:19Speaker 1: what the shark is and whether we need to remove
- 3:21Speaker 1: everyone from the water or whether we.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Is it common knowledge to not swim like dawn and dusk?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Is that right? Is that when they're the most active?
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yeah, dawn and dusk. I mean, that's when they're feeding
- 3:32Speaker 1: most of the time. And it's more, though, if we've
- 3:34Speaker 1: had a lot of rain and the water's real murky
- 3:37Speaker 1: because the stormwater drains stay away from the water then.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And also when you see a lot of bait balls
- 3:43Speaker 1: and that in the water, that's probably the best times
- 3:45Speaker 1: not to go into the water.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Is the main problem, though, that people don't know how
- 3:49Speaker 2: to swim and they get caught in rips? I mean,
- 3:50Speaker 2: we're all going on and on about sharks. What is
- 3:53Speaker 2: your number one thing you want people to do, especially
- 3:56Speaker 2: if they're a tourist, if they go onto Bondi Beach?
- 3:58Speaker 1: Well... With that, we know a lot of stuff with
- 4:01Speaker 1: Float to Survive, and we've realised where people enter the
- 4:04Speaker 1: water is where they want to exit the water. So
- 4:07Speaker 1: if you do that, you're going... With the rip, but
- 4:10Speaker 1: then you try and fight the rip to get back
- 4:11Speaker 1: to where you entered.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Isn't that funny? Psychologically, we just want to come out
- 4:15Speaker 2: where we went in.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah, because you think that's safe. You can stand and think, oh, no,
- 4:18Speaker 1: I can get there. I can stand.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So you're better off floating and going with the flow
- 4:21Speaker 1: of the water because it'll take you to where the
- 4:23Speaker 1: sandbank is to stand up or where the waves are
- 4:25Speaker 1: breaking naturally. So use the ocean's energy, not your energy.
- 4:30Speaker 1: and then it gives you time for lifeguards to come
- 4:33Speaker 1: out and rescue you. And put your hand up.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Now, I'm sure there's like blokes I can think of
- 4:37Speaker 2: that are like, oh, I could do this, but just
- 4:39Speaker 2: put your hand up if you're in trouble, right?
- 4:41Speaker 1: Yeah, just put your hand up or yell out.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Would you say that a majority of people that you
- 4:44Speaker 3: do have to rescue from the ocean are tourists? I
- 4:47Speaker 3: just think to myself, Australians, we're pretty proactive about getting
- 4:50Speaker 3: our kids swimming lessons.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Nippers.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I did nippers.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Would you say a majority of people that you have to.
- 4:59Speaker 1: You'd be surprised.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Really?
- 5:01Speaker 1: A lot of people that we rescue, I reckon 60%, 65%
- 5:04Speaker 1: are living in Australia.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So they've come from overseas to live here now because
- 5:09Speaker 1: we've had such an influx of multicultural communities. Yeah. So...
- 5:14Speaker 1: That's the issue there. But yes, we get a lot
- 5:16Speaker 1: of tourists as well.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Maybe that's why Pauline Hanson's against them. She's just like
- 5:19Speaker 2: all about water safety.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's definitely what it is.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 5:24Speaker 2: On a serious note, mate, it'll be almost a year.
- 5:27Speaker 2: You were there on the day of the Bondi attack.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Were you working that day?
- 5:30Speaker 1: No, I was on a day off that day. But
- 5:32Speaker 1: the guys were calling me when it was sort of happening. And,
- 5:35Speaker 1: you know, they did a magnificent job to run in
- 5:38Speaker 1: and not know what was going on at the time
- 5:40Speaker 1: when they ran in there and just saw a whole
- 5:41Speaker 1: lot of people dying. you know, injured and shot.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And the bullets were still going when they were trying
- 5:47Speaker 1: to do some resuscitation. So it was a great effort
- 5:50Speaker 1: and something that, you know, how do you prepare for
- 5:53Speaker 1: something like that?
- 5:53Speaker 2: No, a day that people will never forget. Yeah. I'm
- 5:56Speaker 2: guessing on the one-year anniversary, everyone at Bondi will be
- 6:00Speaker 2: part of something special.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're going to do something on
- 6:03Speaker 1: the anniversary and everyone will be down there.
- 6:05Speaker 2: How is it down there? Like, was it quiet over
- 6:08Speaker 2: summer after what happened and was the vibe quite different?
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, when it first happened, yeah, into Christmas
- 6:13Speaker 1: was a bit eerie. It was a different sort of
- 6:15Speaker 1: Christmas than normal at Bondi. Yeah. But then it got
- 6:18Speaker 1: back to everyone getting back down to normal and I
- 6:20Speaker 1: think that's what the community in the eastern suburbs wanted
- 6:23Speaker 1: to do. They wanted to get back to normal as
- 6:25Speaker 1: quick as possible and get on with it. So that's,
- 6:29Speaker 1: you know, helped a lot. And then we went into the...
- 6:31Speaker 1: The Sharks, so it's one of those times. So hopefully,
- 6:36Speaker 1: you know, we usually follow the European summer, so it
- 6:38Speaker 1: looks like we could be having a hot one. Yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Let's hope for a better summer at Bondi. And, mate,
- 6:43Speaker 2: good on you. You're getting stuck into a Porto's now
- 6:45Speaker 2: because I know Amy's just like, can we finish this
- 6:47Speaker 2: interview so I can eat the burger?
- 6:49Speaker 1: I just stole Amy's one. I'm just chomping into it now.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And don't forget, yeah, so $ 2. 86 is what you can
- 6:56Speaker 2: get your burger for at a Porto, only via the
- 6:59Speaker 2: Porto app. Hoppo from Bondi Rescue, good on you, mate.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Thanks for coming in.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Thanks for having me.
