- 0:00Speaker 1: Because he picks me up and he plays safe on
- 0:05Speaker 1: solid HOLLEYA. Well, let's see this outcause he picks me up,
- 0:16Speaker 1: please not feed on solid Halelujah. Indeed, today today is
- 0:28Speaker 1: International Day of People with Disabilities or International Disability Day.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And you know the day that God picked me up
- 0:38Speaker 1: and put my foot on solid ground, Well, it was
- 0:42Speaker 1: May twenty second, the day I passed my gallstone. And
- 0:47Speaker 1: here on the adaptability side of the One Leg Up Network,
- 0:50Speaker 1: I just want to say we've gone back to this
- 0:53Speaker 1: phrase over and over and over again, but it's worth
- 0:57Speaker 1: repeating here with Alex Gartty, disability is not inability. That's
- 1:05Speaker 1: disability is not inability. I love that phrase so much.
- 1:09Speaker 1: But after what I've heard passing that gallstone in May
- 1:13Speaker 1: and the doors that gallstone passing opened for the rest
- 1:17Speaker 1: of the year, I'm so thankful this Thanksgiving season, this
- 1:22Speaker 1: Christmas season for that gallstone, so much so I wrote
- 1:26Speaker 1: about it. Yeah, I wrote about it on my blog
- 1:31Speaker 1: Alex GNYC dot com because my thoughts on it are this,
- 1:47Speaker 1: on International Day of Disability, I'll revert back to a
- 1:50Speaker 1: phrase I learned, disability is not inability, and that extends
- 1:54Speaker 1: to the fact we are able to take care of
- 1:56Speaker 1: our health and our bodies. It's the only one we have,
- 2:03Speaker 1: our bodies, our only body we have in this life.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And the only time I truly feel like someone who
- 2:12Speaker 1: is disabled is when I don't take care of this
- 2:15Speaker 1: body God has given to me for now thirty three years.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So this International Day of Disability, I want to say,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we have the ability, even though we have a disability
- 2:31Speaker 1: to take care of our bodies. We have that ability.
- 2:34Speaker 1: In fact, we are mandated too, I believe take care
- 2:40Speaker 1: of our bodies. That's God's mandate for us. He gave
- 2:44Speaker 1: us this body, and we know, we know that Christ
- 2:49Speaker 1: actually treated his body like a temple. And so to
- 2:53Speaker 1: take those steps to treat my body better and maintain
- 2:57Speaker 1: it right. Our bodies are like a car writ that
- 3:01Speaker 1: needs maintenance at all times. I've gotten rid of the
- 3:06Speaker 1: fast food apps, the Big three, we won't name them
- 3:08Speaker 1: on this podcast today. But I've also decided to eat
- 3:14Speaker 1: more fiber based products and even dairy free products. And yes,
- 3:21Speaker 1: most of the time, if I slip up a little bit,
- 3:24Speaker 1: I still make sure to have decaf coffee because my
- 3:26Speaker 1: fiance Gaby reminds me caffeine can give you gallbladder issues
- 3:30Speaker 1: once again. But who'd have thought on International Day of Disabilities,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I would say thank you to the gallstone that gave
- 3:40Speaker 1: me so much pain. I mean arriving in the hospital pain.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But that little gallstone, it was pesky. I'm sure, it
- 3:51Speaker 1: was little. I'm sure, but it's made a big difference,
- 3:56Speaker 1: big difference, and it's brought me closer to my family,
- 4:00Speaker 1: my fiance, and to my friends because that little gallstone
- 4:07Speaker 1: felt like such an intense release of feeling excluded. I
- 4:11Speaker 1: know I've said this before, but once I got rid
- 4:18Speaker 1: of that gallstone, I felt included again. I felt encouraged
- 4:22Speaker 1: to get out there again and adapt along the way.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Adapt my evenings, adapt what I put in to my body,
- 4:35Speaker 1: adapt what I how I put out if you will,
- 4:42Speaker 1: of my body. So if there was ever a day
- 4:48Speaker 1: to talk about adaptability, it would be International Day of Disability.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And our adaptive nature should never stop going. Our adaptive
- 5:03Speaker 1: never nature should always be adapting because life throws us
- 5:08Speaker 1: circumstances we may not sure how to handle, but that's
- 5:14Speaker 1: where our instinct to adapt kicks in. It sure has
- 5:20Speaker 1: a mine. As of October. As of May twenty second,
- 5:26Speaker 1: when was the moment you realized your body had to adapt.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Email me that answer, Alex G NYC Alex and ALEXJNYC
- 5:40Speaker 1: dot com. When was that moment that you realize your
- 5:44Speaker 1: body had to adapt? And as someone with a disability,
- 5:51Speaker 1: do you feel like your life challenges have made you
- 5:55Speaker 1: have a can't miss attitude meeting you can't miss this,
- 5:58Speaker 1: you can't miss that, you can't miss when it comes
- 6:02Speaker 1: to your health. I felt like May twenty second, my
- 6:06Speaker 1: can't misattitude kicked in big time, because if you miss
- 6:13Speaker 1: the signs that your body is going through something, then
- 6:19Speaker 1: it'll bit leads to a bigger disaster. But I've just
- 6:25Speaker 1: been accustomed to knowing the sign now and listening to
- 6:28Speaker 1: my body. That's the the part of adaptabilities. You listen
- 6:31Speaker 1: to your body, and your body's gonna tell you Okay,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I'm full, Okay, this isn't good for me, Okay, this
- 6:41Speaker 1: is good for me. Okay I like this, I don't
- 6:44Speaker 1: like this. Your body's gonna tell you all that. So
- 6:46Speaker 1: on this day of this International Day of Disability, whether
- 6:51Speaker 1: you have one or don't have one, whether it's diagnosed
- 6:54Speaker 1: or not, listen to your body. I think that's your
- 6:58Speaker 1: go for everybody. Able body disability differently able. Listen to
- 7:05Speaker 1: your body. I know, since May twenty second, I have
- 7:09Speaker 1: and I'm better for it. I'm better because of the
- 7:12Speaker 1: sort of sports system around me. Thanks be to God.
- 7:15Speaker 1: This Christmas season and speaking of international people disabilities, well
- 7:21Speaker 1: it's Giving Tuesday, so give to of course, the Viscardi Center,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and let's keep the legacy of Hank Viscardi alive and
- 7:30Speaker 1: well in Albertson, New York. It's what he would want
- 7:35Speaker 1: here on the Alex Scarett One leg Up Network
