- 0:23None hamster with a blunt pen knife
- 0:35for doing quicker quicker. Quicker welcome back to a
- 0:42hamster with a blood pen knife. My name is Fraser Fraser Henry
- 0:48Orbinger, and I bring Joe's gift of smut to all humanity.
- 0:58Hello, my name is Joe Henry Harbinger, and I bring Fraser's
- 1:06gift of absurd opinions to all humanity.
- 1:12And I'm signed. No other explanation needed.
- 1:20Maybe you're on sci tank? Yeah.
- 1:24Oh, no. Would you start sprouting horns?
- 1:27Oh, no. Let's move on quickly.
- 1:31Hi boys. Hello.
- 1:33Oh, In Sync now. We've recently all been in a in
- 1:37a shuttle to on the way to Castro, Valva and had a lovely
- 1:40time doing that, didn't we? We did indeed, yes.
- 1:43Fraser's not aware of it yet, but he was in the cupboard and
- 1:46nice to size. With the liquorish all sorts.
- 1:50But here we are, back again to talk about hot off the press,
- 1:55press press. The Legend of Ruby Sunday, the
- 1:591st part of the climactic end of series one, possibly season
- 2:06four, possibly. We've got so many seasons, we're
- 2:11losing cowl. No, we're not.
- 2:14It's Series A. Look at that.
- 2:16Just let's just pick a steer. We'll go with Series A, put with
- 2:20put with flag. I've got a question for you
- 2:23both. Really.
- 2:25Really. How are you finding the season?
- 2:31Let's go across to sight. I am absolutely loving it.
- 2:37To be honest, I don't think there has been a Duff Ed episode
- 2:41so far. I think there's been some very
- 2:43big highs. I think the most disappointing
- 2:46one for me overall is Boom. But then I'm not the world's
- 2:52biggest Steven Moffat fan. I mean, I'm not down with you,
- 2:54Joe, but I'm I'm never been his hugest fan of his work with
- 2:59Russell T Davis anyway. But generally I've I've really
- 3:04enjoyed everything that that has been on.
- 3:06I think still, the Devil's Court is my favorite of the lot
- 3:11because it was so different and stylish and fun and scary and
- 3:18weird that that really sat well with me.
- 3:21But I mean, that pair also of 73 yards and dot and Bubble had
- 3:26such huge, amazing, brilliant things to say that they sit very
- 3:33highly up there as well. So, yeah, I mean, it's there's
- 3:36been a lot to to discuss, lots to think about, lots to to and
- 3:40even Rogue, which I thought was sort of the throwaway fun
- 3:44episode, it turned out there was loads in that that I had to
- 3:47discuss. So yeah, it's it's been good.
- 3:51Why is that? I'm going to agree a lot with
- 3:54what Simon said there. I think it's a very buried
- 3:59series that we've had so far kind of just working through
- 4:04what we've had. You've had the fun frothy let's
- 4:08get to know our characters opener with space babies with
- 4:10it's, you know, snot monster and very little else to really other
- 4:16than, you know, these are our characters.
- 4:17Let's put them in a scenario, watch them work.
- 4:20You can get to know them again after Christmas, after the break
- 4:23from Christmas. Devil's Cord was just a kind of
- 4:27pivot and then, you know, you've got a a musical episode and all
- 4:31but name with, you know, just Stella turned from Jinx.
- 4:35Monsoon is a quite different villain of what we've had.
- 4:41You then pivot into Boom, which is a really high concept story.
- 4:47You know, let's tell a Doctor Who story where the Doctor can't
- 4:50actually move at all. And, you know, see where we'll
- 4:53go with that with the sort of usual Moffett trappings.
- 4:57And then you go into 73 yards, which is just an unbelievable
- 5:01bit of drama in as much as that. It just doesn't tell you
- 5:05anything. It just leaves you to make your
- 5:08own opinions up and, you know, resolve the story, resolve the
- 5:12plot, resolve everything the way you want it.
- 5:15And I can't think of any other drama at the minute which would
- 5:19actually encourage that. And certainly it's, it's a
- 5:22surprise coming from RTD who was so far, since he's come back,
- 5:29been at pains to kind of say, yes, I'm writing this for the
- 5:32iPad generation of kids who can't concentrate on anything
- 5:35for more than 5 minutes and need constant refreshers of what's
- 5:38going on. So that was a real pivot.
- 5:40And then he turns into dot and Bubble where he gives us
- 5:43basically his Black Mirror audition piece and says, Hey,
- 5:46Charlie Brooker, look what I could do with sci-fi and look at
- 5:49the the sharp observations I can make.
- 5:52And you know, the mirror I can hold up to all you, you white
- 5:56boys out there. He.
- 5:57Doesn't need Charlie Brooker. Geez, Charlie Brooker been
- 6:01knocking his door. Exactly.
- 6:03He's kind of, you know, I'm not going to do this forever, but,
- 6:05you know, tapas up mate, and we'll go a bit darker than what
- 6:08I can do for 7:00 on Saturday on a BBC.
- 6:13Pretty dark all the same. Yeah, at the end particularly.
- 6:17Yeah, but you know, it's still it is still family
- 6:19entertainment. You know, Black Mirror, if all
- 6:22the for what it is is not family entertainment, it is very adult.
- 6:28Anyhow, moving on, we've got Rogue, which you know, then
- 6:31haven't had, you know, 2 quite, you know, thick slices of dense
- 6:35chocolate cake. You now get something a little
- 6:37bit more frothy and fun. You have Rogue, which is just a
- 6:42laugh along riot, which then kind of leads you into the big
- 6:48two-part Earthbound finale that when you always knew we were
- 6:50going to get of Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death.
- 6:56If there's one fault I think with this season is that it is
- 7:00too short. Yeah.
- 7:02I think, and we'll discuss this in the very first opening scene
- 7:06when we're press play, but there is just not enough time for
- 7:10things to breathe and. I think that's only a problem
- 7:13with this episode. I think it all sort of.
- 7:16It made me realise in this episode, my God, I haven't
- 7:19actually had the time to luxuriate into this Doctor
- 7:22companion pairing for all of this to impact like it probably
- 7:25should. And I would say the same about
- 7:2773 yards, I think 73 yards I. Can't agree with that. 73 yards
- 7:32has come out of necessity in a little bit in that he didn't
- 7:34have Shooty for the full. That's Russell is best when he's
- 7:39when he's desperate and he's improvising.
- 7:41That's me, yes. Let me pitch you 73 yards next
- 7:45season when we know Carla Sunday a bit better because at the
- 7:53heart of 73 yards in the middle, you have got that scene where
- 7:57Carla goes and speaks to the woman and deserts Ruby.
- 8:02Now that is going to land better the better you know the
- 8:07relationship between Carla and Ruby.
- 8:09I think that was well established in the church on
- 8:13Ruby Rd. I think there was a that's not a
- 8:16problem per Southeast. And that's not a problem.
- 8:18I don't think that's the centrepiece scene of that
- 8:20episode either. I don't think it's supposed to
- 8:22be. I think there's supposed to be a
- 8:23distance between her and Carla, and absolutely there's supposed
- 8:26to be a distance between her and everybody.
- 8:29But in that episode. If you have better established
- 8:32that relationship, let's put another way that we pitch you 73
- 8:36yards in Series 2. So instead of the 15th Doctor
- 8:42and Ruby Sunday, it's Rose Taylor in the 10th Doctor.
- 8:46And let's put that episode in instead of Love and Monsters.
- 8:50So picture that in your head. And now picture.
- 8:53I wouldn't buy it, though. I wouldn't buy the if she could
- 8:56tell anything to no, no, no. Let me count to you no.
- 8:59No, no, I'm not finished. Now don't agree.
- 9:02Now picture in your head Jackie Taylor turning her back on Rose
- 9:08after. It wouldn't work to.
- 9:10It. Wouldn't work because there's
- 9:12nothing I would believe that that person could tell to Jackie
- 9:15Tyler, and that's the point. She'd been established that
- 9:18much. So that would blow the episode
- 9:20for me. That's the point.
- 9:22That's the point. It would really drive home the
- 9:25abandonment, the idea that this woman is seeing something so
- 9:29appalling, so destructive, that it would turn Jackie Taylor
- 9:34against Rose. I'll never buy it.
- 9:36Plus that's not Rose Tyler's story that she was banned and so
- 9:40it wouldn't hit at all. I don't think that would work.
- 9:42I think the chills would be there completely.
- 9:45I think as a as a way of giving Millie Gibson a chance to steal
- 9:51that lime and show everything that she can do R 473 yards was
- 9:55one. I'm in the advantageous position
- 9:58of loving the Chris Chipnow era and loving RTD two.
- 10:03So I'm not involved in this terrible discourse of all
- 10:06comparisons that are going on at the moment, which is very
- 10:08tedious. So I'm very pleased to be that
- 10:10person just going, well, hurrah for me, you know?
- 10:13Why? Why did Doctor Who fans want to
- 10:15be football fans? There's a lot of comparisons
- 10:19here. I'm learning this from John
- 10:20Arnold. There's.
- 10:21A lot of tribalism isn't there that that seems to have set in
- 10:24over the show runners. And it's also reductive because
- 10:28they're all, they've all got really highs and they've all got
- 10:31real lows. And you can't just say you
- 10:35can't, A, you can't just write off a whole era, and B, you
- 10:39can't just play off a whole era against another whole era, and
- 10:43particularly not one that is still unfolding.
- 10:47Yeah, I mean, you can, you can perfectly say, you know, I
- 10:49support Nicasi United, so therefore I hate Sunderland or I
- 10:52support Tottenham, so I hate Arsenal, but I support RTD so I
- 10:56hit Chibnall or I, you know, Nah, it doesn't work.
- 11:00It's it's. Good if we like it.
- 11:01Oh, it was so refreshing. The other day I did a desert
- 11:04planet diss with somebody. I said, what new who episode
- 11:06would you choose? And he went, well, I'm in a bit
- 11:08of a bond. He goes, because I could choose
- 11:09a Jody, but then I could choose a Moffat because I love his
- 11:12stuff and I could choose an RTD one, but then I'm really loving
- 11:15RTD two. I went, my God, I found the
- 11:17person you know who loves it all for me.
- 11:21This. Is and this is the thing, isn't
- 11:23it? That I think it's just again,
- 11:25it's the the social media curse that all we hear are the people
- 11:29who shout loudest. And actually there are probably
- 11:31loads of people like us who just love it all because it's Doctor
- 11:35Who. But we get drowned out by the
- 11:38shouty annoying opinions that are around.
- 11:40So see your dot and bubble. Basically it's just to switch
- 11:45your phone off and have a wank really in it.
- 11:48But I. Look at the overnight rating.
- 11:51Oh, don't get me started on that.
- 11:53Jesus Christ. For my my opinion of this season
- 11:55is though, that I think it's been very strong.
- 11:59I think he's learnt a lot from Steven Moffett in and I think
- 12:03Steven Moffett and Rusty Davis are talking a lot and there's a
- 12:06lot of focus on very strong individual episodes.
- 12:09Allah listen, you know those those sort of unique high
- 12:13concept stand alone episodes, the two in the middle of the
- 12:16season dot bubble and 73 yards I think are the stand outs by a
- 12:21mile. They're the best thing he's
- 12:23written since turn left and midnight back-to-back.
- 12:25I I think and what else has come around.
- 12:29It's been really good. But my weakest has been rogue,
- 12:32which for all it was fun and I don't object to there being a
- 12:35gay rammers and Doctor Who is very hot watching shooting at
- 12:39Warren Jonathan Groff, getting it off.
- 12:41It just felt a bit classic who for me in in a very sort of
- 12:46pedestrian way, Bird people running around the house, a few
- 12:50witty lines and I don't object to those things.
- 12:53But when that is being stacked up against and I'm even going to
- 12:56include boom in this, these high concept, amazing bits of drama
- 13:02Devil's called as well, just utterly unique.
- 13:05I think it it just gets lost in the pack a little bit.
- 13:08I think we just needed that. I think we needed that after the
- 13:11two high concept episodes with big messages.
- 13:14I think sometimes we forget that actually with Doctor Who, it's
- 13:21it should be fun and it should be thing and we don't have to do
- 13:24the message of the week every week.
- 13:25Sometimes you just want something that clears the
- 13:27palette and is just a great watch.
- 13:30And it was a great watch My. Biggest surprise has been that I
- 13:33knew for you to get while I was going to be brilliant.
- 13:35I just knew it. I knew he was going to be
- 13:37charisma personified. Billy Gibson man has blown yes
- 13:40she sucks off this season. She's.
- 13:42Been my revelation of the 17. Years old.
- 13:45Yeah. And she turns her hand to every
- 13:48genre they asked her to do this year like.
- 13:50I mean nothing. Has phased her.
- 13:52The comedy she does in Rogue when she's doing that battle,
- 13:54dance to Poker face and all of that, I was just wonderful.
- 13:58I think the issue we work for me was it was just too predictable.
- 14:02I think, you know, you could. As soon as, you know, you have
- 14:06that scene in the TARDIS with Captain Jack Hamilton, to steal
- 14:11the phrase from Toby Haydock in The Doctor to, you know, or
- 14:14come, come journey the stars with me.
- 14:16It's like you're going to die. Yeah.
- 14:20Or. It was basically the beats of
- 14:23the girl in the fireplace in lots of ways, and particularly
- 14:26the ending. And the ending didn't sell as
- 14:28well as the girl in the fireplace.
- 14:29Exactly. That's not a huge fan of the
- 14:32girl in the fireplace, as recently revealed.
- 14:35You should say that sorry because I was feeling some
- 14:38familiar beats of Army of Ghosts in the Legend of Ruby Sunday.
- 14:42Yes, there was. What were you?
- 14:44I was. With you I was not, so I am
- 14:48intrigued to for you to point these beats out to me.
- 14:52Well, just how the whole thing is a massive build up to a huge
- 14:56reveal climax of an old villain at the end of the episode.
- 14:59How the last 10 minutes is all building up to that moment.
- 15:01How we head off to the person's home for a little while.
- 15:04How the whole thing is I just, I how this was plotted, how it
- 15:09played out. I was like, I've kind of seen
- 15:10this done before, but what was different was the tone.
- 15:15I think he's tapped into this sort of dark fantasy tone, which
- 15:19gives us a really ominous feel. And I thought that's what really
- 15:23works here. What about you guys?
- 15:25What about you side? Yeah, I mean, there's definitely
- 15:29been a dark fantasy feel to the whole season, which is very
- 15:33different to to RTD one. Yeah, I mean, I have to say I've
- 15:38only seen this episode once. I have so this is this will only
- 15:43be my second watch. So I'm very much I'm still on
- 15:46the the opinions of when I watched it on Saturday morning
- 15:50very early before work. So yeah, it's it's kind of plays
- 15:58out like a Russell T Davis finale got big tech.
- 16:02We've got that goes wrong that causes a big problem.
- 16:06We've got particularly a machine with big levers.
- 16:10We've seen big levers before. Anagram.
- 16:13Sigh. We lost an anagram, but exactly.
- 16:16All of all of these things are, are sort of familiar, but that's
- 16:20OK. And and again, I, I really did
- 16:24not think he was bringing back a one off villain from 49 years
- 16:30ago for this. I really thought, you know what
- 16:33that's just fans being stupid. There is no Oh my God, he is.
- 16:40I think the fact that he's pushed away from the Daleks and
- 16:43the Sidemen and the Sun Tyre, because that was sort of flogged
- 16:46to death at the tail end of the Bishop New era really well.
- 16:49But we've done it a lot, and he's gone for Beat the Meep, the
- 16:53Celestial Toymaker and Sue Tech. Yeah.
- 16:56I mean, in some ways I think I'd have preferred it to have been a
- 16:59new and bigger threat, but I can understand why you would do it.
- 17:03But sometimes I think the constant looking back, we've had
- 17:08a season that hasn't really looked back at all and it would
- 17:11have been nice to have finished it without without something
- 17:15coming back as well. So although I'm happy and
- 17:19delighted that Suitek is back, in particular Gabriel Wolf is is
- 17:22back doing the Voice and everything else, would it have
- 17:26been better? Would it hit even bigger if it
- 17:29was a new fret that we didn't know anything about and that the
- 17:33we had to watch the doctor try because the doctors defeated him
- 17:36once, so we know he could do it again.
- 17:39But if we got a new fret, would that be would that hit even
- 17:43better? Would the cliffhanger, would the
- 17:46cliffhanger have hit as much though, if it had just been
- 17:49rando God from the dawn of time? Well, in that utopia session
- 17:53have stood up and gone. That's only hitting for fans.
- 17:59I you know there. Are there's only fans watching
- 18:03now? That is not true.
- 18:05At all there's a. Load of old bollocks that is.
- 18:08But you know, don't do that, don't do that.
- 18:13Don't put bollocks and only fans in the same sentence.
- 18:17Oh, I've done that before. Oh, a subscriber?
- 18:20I know you have. But you know, there is a whole
- 18:27tranche of the audience who won't know who Suitec is, who
- 18:30will go back and find Pyramids of Mars now.
- 18:32But you know, it's going to hit the same for them.
- 18:36It's just a a creature that they they understand that the Doctor
- 18:41that the Doctor knows. I mean, it might be a name that
- 18:44the Doctor knows for this new creature anyway, but we don't
- 18:47know it. So you know, what's what's the
- 18:50difference? But it's presented in the most
- 18:52chilling way possible. Any child, any person has never
- 18:55seen pyramids. And Mars just knows this is
- 18:57fucking bad news. Absolutely.
- 18:59You know Fraser well, how did you find the episode?
- 19:02I mean. I think to to kind of circle
- 19:05back on that again, to mention the length of the series,
- 19:08because again, we look at this as being a classic RTD series
- 19:13finale. We know what to expect.
- 19:15You know, the template of this Series A is the same template
- 19:18we've had since season one, series one with them.
- 19:22You know, we know we're coming back to an earthbound two-part,
- 19:26you know, higher stakes imaginable finale.
- 19:32The difference we've got with this is that if you look back,
- 19:35you're seeing on your ghost. I'm I'm thinking about Wolf all
- 19:37the time with this, you know, plenty of that, but I'm also
- 19:42thinking, you know, death in heaven and you know, it's
- 19:44basically just a story that builds up to a cliffhanger, a
- 19:49big shocking reveal of a cliffhanger.
- 19:52And the difference here is, like you say, we don't know if you're
- 19:57a casual, you know, fans, you know, we know who Suitek is.
- 20:02You know, you're more casual viewer or maybe as your fan
- 20:04person that's only been a fan since, you know, series one
- 20:09hasn't got that connection. Go Oh my God, Suitek.
- 20:12It's Suitek. They're just me, right?
- 20:15So that, yeah, cool. Whatever.
- 20:17The difference, if you look at series one is we've we had the
- 20:20Daleks seeded in Series 1, so we had Dalek.
- 20:24So by the time you come to the end, you know, the threat of the
- 20:27Daleks in Series 2, we'll have the Cybermen, but we've had the
- 20:31Cybermen. Age of Attack of the Rise of the
- 20:34Steel. So you you already know about
- 20:38the Cybermen there. So when it's the big reveal of
- 20:40the Cybermen at the end and then you're nearly all the Daleks as
- 20:43well. So you're like Daleks, you know,
- 20:45these are already being kind of seeded.
- 20:48What do? You mean, what about that scene
- 20:49in In the Devil's Chord, which played out exactly like that
- 20:53scene in Pyramids and Mars? Everyone should have known at
- 20:55that point. Well, yes.
- 20:58But if you don't, you know, again what, what we're missing.
- 21:01And I think maybe he's, you know, Suitek might have been a
- 21:05better reveal for next year if we've got, if we know I've got
- 21:09another season, we'll have to wait and see what he's doing
- 21:12with Series B. But to think, you know, we could
- 21:14have ceded Suitek in Series A and then had Suitek as the
- 21:20reveal in the end of Series B as the big bad for Series B again,
- 21:24you know, it might be something completely different in Series B
- 21:27that kind of negates all that. But that would be my thinking
- 21:29would be maybe he's have a different big bad for this.
- 21:33But do you lay your groundwork now?
- 21:36Have you sort of mentions of Suitek throughout so that when
- 21:40Suitek does land, it actually gives a bit more heft?
- 21:45Series three, you know, the master needed explaining.
- 21:49So you have to have Utopia to set up the master to go into the
- 21:54two-part finale so that it actually, you know, you actually
- 21:57sat and thought, well, this is this is it makes sense.
- 22:02It's it's it hits home. So I'm, you know, next, next
- 22:07week we'll find out exactly what he's doing with Suitek.
- 22:11But as things stand with this episode, it just felt a bit
- 22:14like, fine, you Suitek, but do we do your homework first?
- 22:18Do lay your groundwork. I'm not going to make that this
- 22:21entire episode disagreeing with you, but I am going to disagree
- 22:24with you because I think you're thinking primarily in Doctor Who
- 22:28terms and Doctor Who continuity terms and that Suitek, the name
- 22:31or the concept should be dropped before this.
- 22:34But actually Suitek is just another God.
- 22:37And we've had the Giggle, which featured a God, and we had the
- 22:40Devil's cord. We've featured a God that is
- 22:43your seeds leading up to this, and Suitek is just another God.
- 22:46The fact that he's a God that we know from the classic series,
- 22:49all well and good, but you cannot say that the gods have
- 22:52not been seeded since our gods came back.
- 22:55That's what he is, that he's just another God.
- 22:57And they literally list all the gods in order that woman says
- 23:01the God of this, the God of mission, the God of that, it's
- 23:04all. Been seeded, it's the gods have
- 23:06been seeded, but he is a. Goat, so he's.
- 23:08Ticked Suitek hasn't though, so. That's fine.
- 23:12That's that's just. A name he's.
- 23:14Another God. Exactly, exactly.
- 23:15It's just a name. If you have you know in Devil's
- 23:19Court you have mention of Suitek or if in that.
- 23:23Ruin. Yeah, then then you don't get
- 23:26the shock reveal. If in 73 yards you have so
- 23:29mention of suitek, then by the time you get to suitek at the
- 23:34end it means a lot more. It lands a lot harder.
- 23:40No, I'm not. I'm not convinced to.
- 23:42Be over, am I? So do you think as the casual
- 23:48viewer perhaps or as the new fans coming into series one, if
- 23:52we hadn't have had Dalek, would the reveal of the Daleks at the
- 23:56end of Bad Wolf been as? Successful.
- 24:00No, no, no. But we but we have had gods.
- 24:02I don't know how I can make this clearer for you.
- 24:04We have had gods in two episodes and now we have another God.
- 24:09And each of the gods have said there is someone.
- 24:11There was someone else. Exactly.
- 24:13You don't need to say, you don't need to see the.
- 24:16You've got the idea that could someone be powerful coming?
- 24:20That could be anyone though. That could be Stan.
- 24:22Stan the God, of course, men. And that's what I was saying.
- 24:25He's the one who waits for the the redeliveries, you know, But
- 24:29that. Was what I was saying earlier
- 24:30on, that you could have something new and it would land
- 24:34exactly the same with you in public.
- 24:36It doesn't. Actually, it's so nice to have
- 24:39you off the fence for one sake, Fraser.
- 24:45Oh no. Shall we watch this?
- 24:46Should. We watch this thing.
- 24:49We haven't argued this about since the time as children.
- 24:52Oh, I know well. Fraser brings the contention.
- 24:55He loves it. Someone counted it quick before.
- 25:0154321 Play the bloody episode. Always pays you.
- 25:11Was all watching on iPlayer. So you've had the universe,
- 25:13Yeah. Lovely.
- 25:14Yeah, right. You know, the way the TARDIS
- 25:16comes swooping in like this? We've done it quite a few times
- 25:19since the RTD came back. Is that the TARDIS trying to
- 25:21shake off Suitek? I wonder.
- 25:23Give me some loving. Don't I think it's just shooty
- 25:26showing off. It's like, it's like doughnuts
- 25:29in the in McDonald's car park or.
- 25:31You know, that's just hasn't she got a wonderful look?
- 25:35I think she's sexy as hell, actually.
- 25:39So does Colonel Wimbra had. If I'm honest, I want to have it
- 25:42off with half of unit. Where's Shirley Bingham?
- 25:46She's off this week. Like, unlike all unit scientific
- 25:50advisors, you're only allowed to do one or two stories and then
- 25:53you have to disappear for a bit and then be replaced.
- 25:55Is she back again? I think she's back next year.
- 25:58I think she was just unavailable for this.
- 26:00Oh, she's a busy woman. It's like that woman ambassador
- 26:03to death. You know that woman who's in
- 26:04episode one and then and then turned up?
- 26:07She's got an annual leave for the rest.
- 26:08Miss anything? Oh well, everyone went quiet
- 26:14there. I mean, what the bloody Hell's
- 26:18of lynx? That's the point.
- 26:21That is the point I think we're ever going to know.
- 26:24Or will we have the Flinx you know?
- 26:27It feels very. Origin story it.
- 26:29Feels very much like Snarf, OH. My God.
- 26:34Snarf, Snarf. Kids, you know what I mean?
- 26:38Just. It's pretty cool though, right?
- 26:40It's a. Big.
- 26:41It looks good. Yeah, whatever.
- 26:44I'm not sure about Unit's child labour laws though.
- 26:46If I'm completely honest. It's 30.
- 26:50Oh my God how hot should shoot your cat while looking That
- 26:53leather jacket. It's a good look.
- 26:56Oh. Have you heard the story about
- 26:57his mum telling him off? No.
- 27:00She's like Shooty. Your name is UN Shooty.
- 27:04Stop telling everyone you're called Shooty, he said.
- 27:07He goes, that's it, He goes. Mum is too late, he's out there
- 27:10now. Oh look that that Susan twist
- 27:14with all the blue make up and the horns.
- 27:16That was C Tech. Oh, OK, What do you think about
- 27:21all this and all this straight away Exposition City Brazen.
- 27:25Well, it's what we've been leading up to, but it's it's
- 27:27nice because it's undercut beautifully by everyone else
- 27:30knowing exactly who she is. And because the doctor and Ruby
- 27:34have been away, they don't know. So that's, I think that's really
- 27:38great. It's not what we've been leading
- 27:41to, though. It's come out with nowhere.
- 27:43It's the because again, it's the shortness of the series.
- 27:46What we need is a point where even just a little scene at the
- 27:51end of Rogue where the Doctor and Ruby stop and go right, hang
- 27:58on, this person keeps popping up everywhere.
- 28:00What we're going to do about and something has got to lead them
- 28:03back to 2024 Earth. I think we assume that
- 28:07conversation took place, but yeah, that's the thing I always
- 28:09used to complain about with Stephen Moffett era All this
- 28:11stuff happening off screen and then we're suddenly expected to
- 28:14catch up and how did we get from there to?
- 28:18There it just comes from Norman's like, right?
- 28:19So why have all of a sudden decided to land a unit and check
- 28:22for Susan Twist now? Well done Fraser.
- 28:25That's the only point you've made so far where your criticism
- 28:27of the shortness of the season makes sense.
- 28:30And then again, leading into sort of, well, we've got 2 two
- 28:33things we're going to look at now.
- 28:34We're going to look at Susan Twist and we're going to look at
- 28:36Ruby Sunday. Again, that just comes from
- 28:38nowhere. It just it just landed there
- 28:40for. But as mysteries for this
- 28:42episode, I think they are both intriguing.
- 28:46They are both intriguing mysteries, as is Mrs. Flood, who
- 28:49we're going to come. To oh.
- 28:51Yes, I'm going to ask, you know, is there too much?
- 28:56Too much mystery? No, he's he's thrown so much in
- 28:59the air this year, so you can't keep track of all of them.
- 29:02Has he thrown too much in the air?
- 29:03No. Don't think so?
- 29:06Well, I guess we'll wait till next week and see how it all
- 29:08pays off. The danger of doing one thing is
- 29:11like the hybrid arc in Series 9, right?
- 29:14Sorry, sorry, I don't vomit or anything.
- 29:16Is is that you do one thing and the payoff is so terrible.
- 29:21You're like, well, we waited the whole season for that.
- 29:22You do six things and then you bring them all together at the
- 29:26end and you pay, I don't know, just three of them off well.
- 29:29Well, that makes a more satisfying season than nine, I
- 29:31think. But then you've got three things
- 29:33that I'm paid off. Well, oh, I don't know yet.
- 29:34I've not seen next week's episode, have I?
- 29:38There's an intriguing line there.
- 29:40Well. Is that about the the book at
- 29:42CBeebies Bedtime? Because I really like that one.
- 29:44That that was that was a very good bit.
- 29:46I like that. But no, a bit about where they
- 29:49say Kate says well, and let me say well, we haven't.
- 29:56We, we, we catch lots of people apart from the obvious and we'll
- 30:01get here. Surely that's Elon Musk they're
- 30:04talking about. That's I did not think that to
- 30:07start with. Who?
- 30:09Who did you think? Well, I thought they were
- 30:11talking about the master. I thought I thought was a
- 30:16reference to the Saxon muster. I was like, Oh yeah, we didn't
- 30:18get that one. That's that is the joy of
- 30:20leaving these things ambiguous. So it could be anyone.
- 30:22And you could pick them up because again, is Suitek the
- 30:27boss that everyone keeps mentioning that they're working
- 30:30for, like the meat and. Rogue.
- 30:32I think he's just part of the Pantheon and then someone's even
- 30:35higher than all of them. OK.
- 30:36And that or is that another thing that is coming another
- 30:39time I. Think that's going to be
- 30:41something different, That's just going to be some random space or
- 30:45who's, you know, the the Doctor Who universe version of like the
- 30:49Kingpin or Moriarty, who's out there?
- 30:52Not the Master, obviously, but out there some sort of
- 30:55intergalactic kingpin, Yeah. Can I say a moment please for
- 31:00Susan Twist, who I think delivers a sublime performance
- 31:05in this? Oh, she comes out and does the
- 31:07Theresa May dance. Made me howl with.
- 31:09Laha, can I shout out to RTD for taking the piss out of us all?
- 31:17Go on. Because he has, hasn't he?
- 31:19This all opening scene where it's like, oh, if you rearrange
- 31:22S triad, you get TARDIS. It's like, yeah, obviously.
- 31:27I got that one like he knows Doctor Who fans of all.
- 31:32And then he's like, oh, but it's Susan.
- 31:33It's it's Susan. It's your granddaughter.
- 31:36Yeah. It's not, it's not.
- 31:37Go on. I'll give you that.
- 31:38Because that one, this is blood. And.
- 31:41Then obviously he's kind of sitting at all with his with his
- 31:43holder because he's way, you know, he's or whatever.
- 31:45I just can't. Can I thank Russell T Davis
- 31:48please? For obviously someone goes,
- 31:50yeah, Susan tech Susan try a tech suit tech and he's like.
- 31:54I mean, to be fair, other people have figured that one out as
- 31:56well. Yeah, I saw.
- 31:57That online sitting there going yeah, I study when supposed to
- 32:00get that one. Can I thank Rusty Davis, please
- 32:03for humanising Kate Lethbridge Stewart to a point where I'm
- 32:08really enjoying watching her for the first time ever in Doctor
- 32:12Who for. The first time ever she's not
- 32:14sapped all the energy in the room.
- 32:16No, she's she's written with huge empathy in this story.
- 32:21And of course, joke. We've met her, haven't we this
- 32:23year? So we did.
- 32:25That humanized her hugely. Ever since Mark, she's now his
- 32:29favorite character of all time. It's it's very.
- 32:31Odd. I've got two questions for you
- 32:34guys. First one, when did you first
- 32:38twig this was going to be Suitek?
- 32:40Oh no, I didn't think he'd ever do it.
- 32:42So not until it was revealed. When when the letters were
- 32:46rearranged, it was just like, Oh my God, of course.
- 32:51We've just missed the bit where I've twigged.
- 32:54Wow, what was it? Don't call me Susan, call me Sue
- 32:58Pet. Sue Pet.
- 33:01Sue, don't call me Susan so we'll know.
- 33:03It's not Susan. It's Sue.
- 33:05Sue. And then Pet.
- 33:07Sue. Pet is just too much like Sue
- 33:09Tech. Oh.
- 33:10I didn't get that. No, I didn't get that.
- 33:12No, it's it was, kind of was. It's 22.
- 33:16It went to seven in the morning, Fraser.
- 33:18But it's just like that, that bit in well, nothing time, you
- 33:23know, like some people twigged that that was John SIM under
- 33:25that Latex. I don't think that really I got
- 33:29it just before it was revealed, but.
- 33:33That's a good question then. Yeah.
- 33:35Given that Kate Stewart was an invention of Chris Tibler and
- 33:39Stephen Moffat, what is it specifically that Russell T
- 33:44Davis is doing in his rating that makes him rated better
- 33:49than? In this episode, he gave her two
- 33:53lines, which I absolutely loved. One was when she said you bring
- 33:56joy and, and comforts him in a very wonderful way.
- 34:00And the other was when he gives her a massive moment of humour
- 34:03and goes, oh, I love Davina as well.
- 34:05And I'm like, fuck me, you just sound like a real person.
- 34:08For the first time ever, you're not coming in doing your
- 34:11Wikipedia article. You know, synopsis.
- 34:14Yeah, on your father. He makes her into a person he
- 34:18meant he makes her into a person with a ton of empathy.
- 34:22That's what that's the difference, I think.
- 34:25I've, I think exactly the same. I I just what I really liked in
- 34:31this episode was the concern she has for for the person who who
- 34:36is killed in the simulation. Look.
- 34:40And the look that she she gives the doctor about that, even
- 34:45though it is technically her responsibility, but she is
- 34:48straight away on to the family on to get this.
- 34:52We need to sort this and I like that a lot.
- 34:57Can I ask a question? No, this is my show now.
- 35:01How cool is Mel undercover? Oh.
- 35:04I love it. We have this everywhere.
- 35:06This is we need the spin off with Mel.
- 35:09Well. Investigate SO.
- 35:12I think. She's.
- 35:14Wonderful in this Joe, if you'd have ever told me that there
- 35:16would be the return of Suitek featuring by Langford as male.
- 35:23Well, that's Big Finish, isn't it?
- 35:25That's or like an EDA or something like that.
- 35:28You know, madness. Sorry, Fraser, let's swing it
- 35:33back round because you didn't Give your opinion on your
- 35:34question, I think. It's I think he's just probably
- 35:38given Gemma Redgrave more to do as well.
- 35:41It's kind of like it's it's you know, that that moment, that
- 35:44time I mentioned about the look is, is really, you know, Karen,
- 35:49you don't write that. Or maybe he has, maybe he's
- 35:51written, you know, you know, Kate looks at the Doctor in
- 35:53disgust and, you know, Gemma's then been able to do something
- 35:56with it because you kind of think, well, you know, where
- 35:59else have she had these moments? You know, it's it's all about
- 36:03character, isn't it? And that's, that's exactly what
- 36:05we look to Rusty for, you know, we look at to Moffett for plot
- 36:09and clever endings and whatnot. We look to, to RTD to give us
- 36:14character moments. And that's probably what he's
- 36:16doing. He's, he is actually giving us
- 36:18some character and saying, you know, do this.
- 36:21It's, it's, I'm not sure you've read the giggle novelization
- 36:27segment. Have you read that?
- 36:28I haven't yet. Not yet.
- 36:30So it's not too much of A spoiler, but there was some
- 36:33sections in that novelization that James Hoss was saying,
- 36:35which really, you know, do exactly what Rusty's doing here
- 36:39with, with Kate as well. So Mebes, there's just more of
- 36:43Kate out there that just hits the the cutting floor because
- 36:45it's actually, yeah, the the bits where, you know, where she,
- 36:49you know, focuses on the the people that are underneath her,
- 36:54you know, the soldiers whose lives are lost, that, you know,
- 36:57that's, that's in that novelization as well.
- 36:59And it's it's out here. So you know Mebes, that is, you
- 37:02know, RTD Covenant said. Well, that's going to be a real
- 37:05character moment for her. There's a sequence in that book,
- 37:08Phrases Do you Remember, where she's talking about her friends
- 37:11and how she advises on their love lives and is always there
- 37:14for them. They go out drinking and all
- 37:16this stuff. And then she masterfully managed
- 37:19just to avoid talking about her work all the time, you know, and
- 37:23just goes, Oh yeah, you know, it's just the usual.
- 37:26Simon's busting the gut, and I think it's because I am.
- 37:28Because we've got missus blood here, and I want to mention the
- 37:33line. Oh, I'm always hiding myself
- 37:37away when the Doctor later on in the episode says when he's
- 37:42talking about Susan that Time Lords have a way of hiding
- 37:45themselves away. You think that's Susan?
- 37:49I have a feeling she is not part.
- 37:52Everyone says she's evil and I'm part of the pantheon of gods or
- 37:57whatever, but I have a feeling she's not.
- 38:00I think this is a a double deception on Russell's part,
- 38:04that he he that it is someone, another Time Lord that is
- 38:10hiding. And I'm not going to say it's
- 38:12the Rani because I don't think it's the Rani.
- 38:14It's the wrong way. Oh.
- 38:16I'm going to say it's Romana because while we're making these
- 38:22stupid predictions, I'm going to say it's another incarnation of
- 38:26Romana who is hiding in London. I'm going to say it's Drax.
- 38:32I am going to point to one particular scene in the Church
- 38:35of Ruby Rd. which is going to kind of knock that off your
- 38:41perch a little bit, and it's the scene where the tortoise is in
- 38:45the middle of the road. You know, I've already
- 38:47established that Missus Flood knows what a police box is and
- 38:50what not. And then the tortoise
- 38:51materializes for the first time. And Missus Flood watches that
- 38:55and is taken aback. She is surprised by that.
- 38:59She drops her shopping in shock and amazement that the TARDIS
- 39:02dematerialize in front of us. So that says to me that Misses
- 39:06Flood doesn't know that that's a TARDIS.
- 39:08Or is it that? She's not expecting it to be the
- 39:11Doctor's TARDIS. In which case, why would she be
- 39:15happy with you know, if anyone knew the TARDIS knew the
- 39:19Doctor's TARDIS and the police box appeared outside their front
- 39:22door, what would they think? Of the reaction that Sarah Jane
- 39:26had to seeing the TARDIS again after a lot of years, it's that
- 39:30it's that scared and thrilled and you've been deserted by the
- 39:34Doctor for a long time. So hence it is Romana.
- 39:37I think the best reaction, but no.
- 39:38She would have that reaction before she did.
- 39:40See what? See what I mean?
- 39:41It's it's the month that to dematerializer.
- 39:44So I think Mrs. Flood knows who Suitek is, obviously.
- 39:49Yeah, she knows something's coming.
- 39:51Knows what a tortoise is, not necessarily the tortoise.
- 39:56So I think there is, you know, Missus Claude is obviously
- 39:59otherworldly. If is she someone that knows the
- 40:02Doctor? I'm not convinced that she is.
- 40:05I think she is someone that knows of Time Lords, knows of
- 40:08Sirens, knows of the pantheon of gods.
- 40:10Then it's going to be something new.
- 40:12I think the best twist would possibly be if Mrs. Flood turned
- 40:16out to be Anita Dobson and she just knew and.
- 40:21He she travelled with the time travelling.
- 40:24And here's my husband, Bromi. He knows about space.
- 40:30That's Isaac Newton. Fix Marvity.
- 40:34You know, it's nice to hear. I've never thought I'd say this
- 40:36in a million years, but I'm going to.
- 40:38It's nice to hear Nicholas Briggs in the new series of the
- 40:41Blinks. You know, he's still doing his
- 40:42voices. Yeah, he's still there.
- 40:46There's a dude. In there there's a dude in the
- 40:47blinks. There is, I know, and apparently
- 40:51right on the Unleashed. I was saying that's set because
- 40:53it was filmed in high summer. It was absolutely roasting,
- 40:58bless him. Did you notice how how the
- 41:01Doctor and Kate Stewart hugged a bit awkwardly, and then Mel came
- 41:06in and it was just an enormous bear hug?
- 41:08And I thought that's a good a good thing to show between the
- 41:12two different characters. And I think there's another
- 41:14really nice moment for Kate where, like the doctor said,
- 41:16yeah, it's Ruby's mom, we'll just let her in and Kate just
- 41:18say why not, whatever. Yeah.
- 41:22Do you have a time window? You expressly forbidden us from
- 41:25doing that. Where is it?
- 41:27Downstairs. I love all of that.
- 41:30And he's actually he's. Just given her, given her the
- 41:32opportunity to do stuff. The bit where he comes in and he
- 41:36looks impressed for a second and then goes look at this load of
- 41:40shit, you risk 1. Crude, yeah.
- 41:46So great and it's wonderful set as well.
- 41:49It is good. It's big, isn't it?
- 41:51I've got lots of dials. I like that you have gone for
- 41:54lots of dials in their tech and it's not all digital displays.
- 41:57Excuse me, you did you get a hard on when you saw that VHS
- 42:00being waved around? I was like, oh God, an old
- 42:03cassette. I got I got more upset when they
- 42:07they had to cover what is the VHS?
- 42:12Oh, we feel so old. I've got to say, I do think the
- 42:15first half of this episode is very talky, yeah.
- 42:20And not unengaging, but very talky.
- 42:22I think from this point on, when the, you know, Ruby Rd. comes up
- 42:27and we go into all this sort of haunting imagery, right?
- 42:30So the climax, I think the episode is on fire from this
- 42:33point. On, well, you've got to.
- 42:34You've got to have your slow build up, haven't you?
- 42:36You've got to and. This this.
- 42:38That's what this episode is. It is just slow build up.
- 42:41Yeah, of. Course.
- 42:42Yeah, well, not the. Ones it starts starts printing
- 42:44in the last 10 minutes, yeah. And I think, but I mean the
- 42:51thing that struck me when I watched this the first time at
- 42:54midnight on on Friday was him how little I breathed during
- 42:59this sequence. This sequence, yeah, yeah.
- 43:03I found myself having to actually think, Oh, take a
- 43:07breath now. It was all the little details
- 43:09when when her mum was suddenly over there, you know it was.
- 43:14Just the anticipation, it was kind of like, you know, Orchia
- 43:17comes Ruby's mom. So now we're going to find out
- 43:19who that is. Except we're not.
- 43:21And now we're going to fight. Oh, there's something else.
- 43:22And there's there's another mystery and there's another
- 43:24mystery and. Then what the hell was she
- 43:25pointing at, you know? Yeah, yeah.
- 43:28So say you stop being so dense. Maggie's punches pointed behind.
- 43:31How just? How is this changing from what's
- 43:34on the tape? Yes, that's very muffy though,
- 43:37right? That reminds.
- 43:39Me of yeah, exactly. Things changing that shouldn't
- 43:43change at all. I can almost say like Russell
- 43:45Davis, you know, he's writing this and he's on the phone to
- 43:47sleep and I've just written this scene.
- 43:48He goes, Oh no, no, do this, do this, Russell, come on now.
- 43:51I bet he's giving him lots of ideas this year.
- 43:53I I do feel his fingers in other episodes, you know, I.
- 43:56Think, I mean, for me, what I feel is that, you know, RTD went
- 44:03first and then Moffett came after him.
- 44:05And so he's kind of just took notes.
- 44:08Yeah. You know, he's watched as a fan
- 44:10and he's kind of took some notes and just thought, well,
- 44:12actually, oh, that was a really, really clever way of doing that.
- 44:15And oh, well, exactly. That's that series was, you
- 44:18know, the series arc was plotted really well there and you've
- 44:20dropped it off. And yeah, and I think he's
- 44:22probably come away from watching Steven Moffat and probably Chris
- 44:26Chibnall's Doctor Who as well as a fan more than anything.
- 44:29And then, you know, turned his professional head on and
- 44:31thought, right, well, what can I Leech from those guys to meet?
- 44:35Yeah. And it's very much like what
- 44:38Russell was doing with taking things from the New Adventures
- 44:41and the fiction of Doctor Who before Doctor Who came back
- 44:44cherry picking the best bits. He gone right?
- 44:47Journey to the centre of the TARDIS and the battle of
- 44:49Ransorov Colos. No, we won't do that.
- 44:51Scribble, scribble, scribble. Oh wait.
- 44:53The ominous tone of dark water and the timeless child orphan
- 44:57plot line. Yes, I'll have that.
- 44:58Thank you very much and there but.
- 45:01Not yet. Oh, the snow.
- 45:06I love the snow. It's such a brilliant image,
- 45:09isn't it? There?
- 45:10Because there's something so magical about snow, anyway,
- 45:13that. Making it kind of.
- 45:16Comforting, but but sinister. Yeah, exactly.
- 45:20And that song, that very haunting.
- 45:25Yeah, the OR the yeah, the paddle of the bells.
- 45:28Bells is just an amazing piece of music anyway, because it's
- 45:31creepy and celebratory and wonderful.
- 45:34It's a really great choice. It sort of makes me feel very
- 45:38warm for Christmas and a bit lonely at the same time.
- 45:41Isn't it very powerful? Oh, I see what you've been
- 45:44involved with. The switches.
- 45:46Oh, my God. And the enormous levers.
- 45:49Oh, we. Love an enormous lever.
- 45:50It's a very Doctor Who thing to have a great big lever.
- 45:55I mean, if we are doing similar episodes, you know, penultimate
- 45:59episodes to what we've had before that, I suppose the big
- 46:01difference is the money. You know, this just looks
- 46:05amazing. Yeah, the effect here is
- 46:07brilliant and I love that it it's low resolution.
- 46:12Yeah, because the VHS is low resolution.
- 46:16I that's better quality than a lot of the VHS is a couple of
- 46:19what I watched down the years. Hang on, am I watching the
- 46:22Silurians? I'm.
- 46:23Going to say if you could extrapolate Planet of the Daleks
- 46:26from the VHS of Planet of the Daleks eyesore then that's
- 46:29bloody good tech. It's a 7th generation death of
- 46:32the Daleks, I think you know. Through the snowstorm.
- 46:36But it's great because then you can.
- 46:38Are they using the wall now? I don't know.
- 46:40Yeah, they were for this one, yes.
- 46:42It means that if it does look like a dodgy CSO effect or
- 46:45whatever they call you, it's meant to be.
- 46:47It's meant to be, yeah, Yeah. Listen, actually it took a lot
- 46:51of processing power to sort of make it look kind of 3D, but the
- 46:55low resolution has helped a bit with that so that it could look
- 46:59a bit creepy and weird. So.
- 47:01But I do think. Question for years then go on.
- 47:05Given obviously we're seeing a lot of money on the screen now,
- 47:08and we've got a lot of money spent over 8 episodes, would you
- 47:12bear in mind that you have disagreed with everything I've
- 47:14said about the length of the series so far?
- 47:16Would you have preferred to see that money spread out over 10
- 47:21episodes or are you happy to think like a 12 episode budget
- 47:26has been squished into 8? I think the big problem here is
- 47:30that there isn't time to make Doctor Who as fast as they used
- 47:36to make it, in the same way as when the series came back, there
- 47:39wasn't time to make Doctor Who because technology had moved on.
- 47:42And everything takes a lot longer to do.
- 47:45And I think although you've got these brilliant special effects,
- 47:48it takes longer to do them than than before, so you can only
- 47:54have eight episodes to actually get them made in time to get it
- 47:58out. But if you kind of take the
- 48:02effect out of that, if you think, well actually that's
- 48:06let's not do digital effects, that is, let's just have some
- 48:08monsters in latex running around the streets of Cardiff as the
- 48:13big part of the week, we could maybe have a few more episodes.
- 48:17I again, I don't think you can get away with that now.
- 48:22I think because there's so much I, I know special effects are
- 48:26not the be all and end all of everything.
- 48:28We're Doctor Who fans know that, but I think in the climate of TV
- 48:33that this is going out in as a big science fiction fantasy,
- 48:38whatever show, you've got to have those effects to get the
- 48:42audience with you now. And it's a bit.
- 48:45Of a like a Star Wars effect from.
- 48:47Yeah, I think so. And I think it's the Star Wars
- 48:49and Star Trek effect. And if you look at all those
- 48:52shows, they are only doing this number of episodes or whatever
- 48:57each year because they've got huge effects things.
- 49:00And if you're making things in ultra high definition or
- 49:04whatever and 4K, then you haven't it.
- 49:09The process of doing that is so much longer.
- 49:13And it's what what Steven Moffat said of as soon as you go into
- 49:18into HD, everything has got to be so much more.
- 49:22The precision of how you make it has got to be so much more
- 49:27because of that. And then you get the same same
- 49:29thing sort of moving on as you go.
- 49:31And this is an effects heavy show.
- 49:33This isn't like some standard BBC gangster drama which are
- 49:38just filming out on the streets. This is this is a lot of studio
- 49:42based stuff. This is a lot of effects work
- 49:44and it all takes time. I think you're asking the wrong
- 49:47question, if I'm honest. And I, I think the question
- 49:51should be not about special effects, but why is this better
- 49:54as a shorter season? Because we've cut out all the
- 49:57flap. You look at those thirteen
- 49:59episode seasons and there's always three or four that are
- 50:02just all right. They're just OK.
- 50:04And if the pay off is that perhaps we don't have quite as
- 50:08much emotional resonance, but the quality of the overall
- 50:11episodes is so superior. I will take I would I would
- 50:16reduce 13 episode seasons that we've already had down to 8
- 50:20episodes to get to get them to match the quality of this
- 50:23season. I think that's it's a bit like
- 50:26saying, you know, a six part's too long, So what you're going
- 50:29to cut out to make it a four parter.
- 50:30That's what I always ask, you know, if you're going to cut
- 50:33those thirteen part series down, what you're going to lose.
- 50:38Well, look, we did have a six parter in the flux and it was
- 50:40even better than this season. So the shorter we go, the better
- 50:44it gets. But that was that was very much
- 50:49one story, wasn't it? This was very much telling one
- 50:54story in six parts, whereas this is like you see very much six
- 50:57individual stories that's so distinct in style and approach
- 51:03and what they are trying to do with the story that they're
- 51:05trying to tell in this series. I think it's a little bit
- 51:07different in that respect. And if this doesn't have the
- 51:11emotional resonance that it could have had it played out
- 51:13longer, had we had more time with Carla, etcetera, etcetera,
- 51:16I think it, it gets to the point plot wise a lot quicker.
- 51:21And I think that works really well.
- 51:22And this scene is a brilliant example of that, that the stuff
- 51:25they set up in the Church of Ruby Rd. the stuff they set up
- 51:28in space babies and all of that, we're, we're pulling it all
- 51:31together a lot quicker in such an enticing way.
- 51:34So I think there are there are things that have improved
- 51:38because the the season has been condensed.
- 51:41But I do, I agree with you with the emotional remnants because I
- 51:43wasn't really feeling too much for Ruby at this point because I
- 51:46just haven't had enough time with to feel it.
- 51:48So it sort of swings around abouts.
- 51:50It's more Carla for me. It's we haven't had enough time
- 51:53for Carla. We'll have a, you know, in
- 51:55Rogue, you have a seam which felt very shoehorned in where
- 51:58the doctor is, you know, explaining to Carla.
- 52:02Yeah, I'll bring her back, see if you know.
- 52:03And that really had no purpose. No, it it didn't belong in that
- 52:10story. That should.
- 52:11Have been it was exactly like the scene in Alias of London
- 52:13World War Three, where she goes we can you promise me in fact,
- 52:16there's so many rose beats there's so many rose beats
- 52:19beyond. Four at lots this year.
- 52:21Yeah, again, that's that same thing.
- 52:23That's what the shorthand. Missing the series is missing an
- 52:26episode where we do go back and we spend a bit of time with
- 52:29Carla. You know, if we had another, you
- 52:32know, even 73 yards would land better if we're in this season,
- 52:36if we had another episode with Carla and basically where we can
- 52:41explore a bit more about, you know, the relationship between
- 52:44Carla and Ruby, and we could have that scene in another
- 52:46episode. But we can't in this season
- 52:49because there just isn't enough time.
- 52:50So we've had to squish it somewhere where it doesn't
- 52:53really belong. But in the end of the day, they
- 52:55have only got 8 episodes to do with, but they have banked two
- 52:58seasons. So I think the moments that
- 53:00you're asking for are coming because we know Ruby Sunday's
- 53:03going to be in Series 2, and so at the end of Series 2, you'll
- 53:05probably get that big climax with Carl and this big officer,
- 53:09whatever you want to call it. But again, then then it kind of
- 53:13goes back to what I was saying, you know, has he chucked too
- 53:15much at this series? Is the more that I?
- 53:17Think so. I think I think some of this is
- 53:18going to bleed into the next season anyway.
- 53:21And the fact that they've banked the two seasons, they've done
- 53:23them together means he can sort of plot out two seasons in one
- 53:26go. And.
- 53:27I'm quite happy to bookmark this podcast and, you know, come back
- 53:29to it at the end of Series B. Oh.
- 53:31We will Fraser. Oh, don't you worry, you will
- 53:33be. It's not like we won't be doing
- 53:35that. But so here we are.
- 53:37We've got the TARDIS possessed, which is a brilliant, that isn't
- 53:42that brilliant Effect I. Do believe Johnny Morris may
- 53:44have done that in a comic strip at one point as well, You know,
- 53:47so I think Russell. And yeah, I mean, it's, it's an
- 53:50old, old thing, isn't it? It's we we had a back in a comic
- 53:55strip in the 80s in the Stockbridge horror when
- 53:59something got into the TARDIS and it's that image.
- 54:04No, I'm, I'm, I'm saying was that not the toy maker?
- 54:06But that was the the 8th Doctor one, wasn't it?
- 54:09But one thing we've never had on TV, and I, I think it's one of
- 54:13the best moments of this episode, is the bit where the
- 54:16TARDIS starts making that noise in the UNIT base that that low
- 54:19grumbling ground and suddenly everyone's looking at the TARDIS
- 54:23and for for the first time, it's not our safe haven.
- 54:26It's like, what the fuck is going on with the TARDIS?
- 54:29It's like those moments where it's possessed in the doctor's
- 54:33wife where suddenly the police box.
- 54:35Is really. This was better than.
- 54:37That but this, yeah, but on another scale.
- 54:40Yeah, that that noise and we've heard it in Wild Blue Yonder,
- 54:43we've heard it in The Devil's Chord, we heard it in Rogue.
- 54:46So again, that's all been all been signposted.
- 54:49Yeah, I think we need to shout out to to Colonel Chidosy at
- 54:52this point. Last much longer, so you better
- 54:56get on with it. Well, he's he's, he's gone
- 54:57already. The mouth, yeah.
- 54:59He was good. The minute he stepped, I don't
- 55:01know if you guys felt this, but the minute he walked behind the
- 55:05tortoise and the camera didn't follow him, that was it.
- 55:08Then I knew he's gone. Yeah, he is.
- 55:10He's a goner. That was another sort of like
- 55:12level of, you know, intensity of, you know, I'm holding me
- 55:17breath now because I know that Colonel Giidozzi's a goner, but
- 55:21it's not. His Smokey Ashley corpse is just
- 55:24like Marcus Scarman in Pyramid. I was just going to say that I'm
- 55:26sorry. Sorry.
- 55:27Clue is all there. Joe, the clues.
- 55:30Are all there. We were so dense, weren't we?
- 55:31Sorry. I'm very dense when it comes to
- 55:35twist time. I'm.
- 55:37Especially. There it is.
- 55:38There it is. Can I tell you guys, I sent you
- 55:40a message in the thread earlier about there's one little scene.
- 55:42It's a very small scene in this episode and it gives me chills.
- 55:46And actually it's my second favorite scene of the of the
- 55:48season because my favorite is still the last scene in Don
- 55:51Bubble. I don't think that I'll ever be
- 55:52top. It's the bit where the Doctor
- 55:56slides down the wall, the lift, and then Mel comes up to him and
- 55:59goes, are you done now? Stop grizzling and get on with
- 56:03it in a way that nobody really talks to the Doctor like that.
- 56:07And yet you've got Mel Bush, companion of the 6th and 7th
- 56:10Doctors there, friend of the doctors for years and years and
- 56:14years, basically saying, right, you've been crying all season,
- 56:17come on, let's get on with it. And just glorious.
- 56:21Right back to her very first scene where she is the only
- 56:24person who gets to tell the doctor what to do and she's
- 56:27going exercising and all of that.
- 56:30That is something that has been in her character all right from
- 56:34the start. And that's it's a lovely call
- 56:37back. I've just thought of that on the
- 56:39spot. So there we go.
- 56:40And the whole. Thing about her being this sort
- 56:42of bonkers Mel, when I think back, she always was was.
- 56:46She was a bit weird. Yeah, but I just think no one
- 56:49ever gave her a character. It's such like any character in
- 56:53on her now. It's such an offbeat, inspired
- 56:56choice to bring back Mel and to bring back Bonnie Langford,
- 56:59who's utterly embedded herself in the public consciousness.
- 57:02Yeah, and not to feel, even though she's like completely
- 57:06different, it doesn't feel like it's not our mill.
- 57:10No, if, if because she's smart like that and she's doing all
- 57:14the things she's showing us, all the things she could have done
- 57:18in 1986 and 1987, that because no, no one was bothered with her
- 57:24character whatsoever. And I'm still furious with
- 57:26Andrew Carmel saying, well, we didn't really know what Mel's
- 57:29character was. You're the fucking script
- 57:31editor. Give her one.
- 57:33It's not difficult. You can do anything with.
- 57:36Her. Oh, it's just this.
- 57:37It's playing out now. Look, although look, she gives
- 57:40him, she goes. Are you finished?
- 57:41Good. For her.
- 57:44Ghetto in fix it. Yeah.
- 57:46Oh, I see. Wonderful, isn't it Wonderful?
- 57:51And then if that wasn't good enough, we get the wonderful
- 57:54scenes now with him and Susan Triad as well.
- 57:57Yep. Where we actually feel very like
- 58:01lot very sympathetic towards her when she starts talking about
- 58:04the dreams, as we still don't know, do we, what that is all
- 58:07about. No.
- 58:08And that's that's still still to come.
- 58:11If it's another hard wave, Bad Wolf, I'll be like Russell T
- 58:15Davis, I mean. You go back to well do Yonder.
- 58:19That's when Susan twist first appears.
- 58:22That's when the groaning of the TARDIS first appears.
- 58:25If you ask my opinion, I know he's all love to hear it.
- 58:30The TARDIS is picked up Suitek at this point and Suitek
- 58:35hitching a ride on the TARDIS and he has been the whole time.
- 58:38So everywhere the TARDIS goes, his avatar appears because tiny
- 58:42winey, you know. So it's it might be intentional,
- 58:46it might not, but it's literally just the influence of Suitek on
- 58:49the TARDIS. I saw a brilliant theory that
- 58:52probably isn't true, but just this wonderful theory of in
- 58:57Pyramids of Mars, where you get that scene right at the start
- 59:00where Suitek appears in the TARDIS for no apparent reason.
- 59:05Is that the moment where Suitek has actually hitched a ride in
- 59:09the TARDIS at while he's sort of going down the time tunnel at
- 59:13the end and has been and has been there the whole time since
- 59:18since then? I like to think of Suitek like
- 59:20Captain Jack in Utopia. The side of the TARDIS we can't
- 59:27see. Oh my God, can we just have a
- 59:31breath for Susan Triad little dance in a minute?
- 59:37I mean, it's a very political season, this isn't it.
- 59:41Like it is really stabbing saying political.
- 59:44Things, yeah. I mean, we had the Morris
- 59:47Gibbons Lane of yeah, definitely not the Prime Minister that's
- 59:49coming in here. But that Theresa May dance, I
- 59:54mean, my Mark keeps doing it. It keeps coming in rooms and
- 59:57doing that stupid dance. He's silly, though.
- 1:00:02Now, did you suspect that this woman, Harriet, was?
- 1:00:08I, I stupidly spent the thing where they said, oh, H Harpinger
- 1:00:13thing. I'm sure I've seen that twist
- 1:00:15somewhere before and I could not think where it was.
- 1:00:18And of course, it was a few weeks ago and I'm really thick.
- 1:00:22I'm thinking, why is Russell T Davis pinched that from
- 1:00:24somewhere else? I think we don't suspect her
- 1:00:27because Morris is there as well. And so it's two new characters.
- 1:00:30If it had just been 1:00, we'd be like, well, who's this now?
- 1:00:32I. Think what it's again, it's a
- 1:00:37bit clever. It's kind of like, yeah, I've
- 1:00:39done that twist once and no one's going to expect me to do
- 1:00:42it again again. But rest assured, every single
- 1:00:46time a character appears in series B with the first name
- 1:00:49beginning with H. People are going.
- 1:00:53To be like that, Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 1:00:56To go back to the pointing in Barbinger.
- 1:00:59Question you asked earlier about all these different arc threads
- 1:01:03in this seasons. I think you do have to do layers
- 1:01:06of deception now because people are so tuned into this stuff.
- 1:01:08I think you have to distract with some things so other things
- 1:01:12get. Partly.
- 1:01:12And Russell T Davis is very is really the master of
- 1:01:16misdirection. He's like a like a magician and
- 1:01:20like in phrases favorite film in the Prestige.
- 1:01:24It's that how do you pull the trick off?
- 1:01:26By showing people things that they're looking for and they're
- 1:01:29not seeing the thing that's right under their noses the
- 1:01:31whole time? Because you want to be deceived
- 1:01:34and you want and you want to play along with all of this.
- 1:01:37I would actually go, Oh my God. I.
- 1:01:42Cannot believe I'm about to say this.
- 1:01:44Mark. Mark Cochrum is about to get a
- 1:01:46massive stiffy. I actually think Moffett is the
- 1:01:49master of deception and Russell has learned a lot from Moffett.
- 1:01:52I think he's Moffett can very cleverly point you in that
- 1:01:56direction whilst doing things over here that you're not even
- 1:02:00looking at that that sort of pay off and actually this, this is
- 1:02:04this is disagree with us. Oh my God, what's going on?
- 1:02:08Because I think what Moffett, what Moffett does is he wants to
- 1:02:12hide everything in plain sight. So he wants you to be very much,
- 1:02:19you know, that was there all along.
- 1:02:21You know, there's Russell's kind of doing that with the the the
- 1:02:25anagrams as well a little bit in this.
- 1:02:28But I think, you know, Moffett is, you know, wants you to
- 1:02:30appreciate how clever he is by the time you get to that point.
- 1:02:34Whereas I. Think whereas Russell's not
- 1:02:35interested in that. Really does want you to be
- 1:02:38deceived. You know, he because he's, he's
- 1:02:41that kind of TV viewer, isn't he?
- 1:02:43That he's, he's sort of steeped in that.
- 1:02:46He doesn't want to make it to, obviously doesn't want to be
- 1:02:49Sherlock Holmes. Whereby, you know, you, you read
- 1:02:53a Sherlock Holmes book, you never guess who it is.
- 1:02:55There's no possible way you can figure out who did it because
- 1:02:58you know, it's like Sherlock Holmes will turn up and say,
- 1:03:00well, I'll tell you what, Watson.
- 1:03:01I went out for a walk in the dark and I found some cigarette
- 1:03:04ash. And that cigarette ash I I know
- 1:03:06comes from a particular brand. Of yeah, it's more Agatha
- 1:03:11Christie where you've got the puzzles and you can put it
- 1:03:14together and if you're smart enough, you've put it together
- 1:03:17slightly before the reveal. Yeah.
- 1:03:20Yeah. I think the Moffett.
- 1:03:22Moffett wants to be Sherlock Holmes.
- 1:03:24He wants to be once you sit there and go, Oh, well done,
- 1:03:26Sherkomes, how clever of you. Well done.
- 1:03:27I think Moffett does surprise me more, but I think Russell lands
- 1:03:30his surprises better, like with with more drama and more more
- 1:03:36melodrama usually. But then I think the best
- 1:03:40surprises I've had in New Who have come on in Chipmel's time.
- 1:03:43It was the end of the spy fall future to do things like that.
- 1:03:47You know, those were the best surprises I had because there
- 1:03:49was no hint at all. Not because tribunal there's
- 1:03:52like, yeah, I am literally going to surprise you with this.
- 1:03:54I'm not going to give. You, I'm not going to tell you
- 1:03:55anything at all. I'm not going.
- 1:03:57To get any clues, I'm literally just going to, you know, I don't
- 1:04:00want us to figure this out. I genuinely want us to be, you
- 1:04:03know, jump scared or whatever while watching this.
- 1:04:06But one thing Rossi Davis does better than Chipman and Moffett
- 1:04:09put together, I think, is deliver a penultimate episode
- 1:04:13cliffhanger. I think he's the brilliant
- 1:04:15Master right here. He did it in Bad Wolf, he did it
- 1:04:18in Sounded Drums, he did it in Army Ghosts, he did it in What's
- 1:04:22the Other One, Stolen Earth. And he does it here as well.
- 1:04:25Like, you know, in a way that everyone's suddenly on Twitter
- 1:04:28going 10 out of 10, best episode ever, you know, in that sort of
- 1:04:32mad, furious way. It's it's a good cliffhanger,
- 1:04:35but not necessarily a good episode.
- 1:04:37I think that's where you guys and I think.
- 1:04:39Yeah, but that's very Steven Moffett as well, especially in
- 1:04:41Series 6. It's a great cliffhanger.
- 1:04:44I'm a lousy episode. This isn't a lousy episode,
- 1:04:47though. No, it's not.
- 1:04:48It's not. I think, you know, you look,
- 1:04:50those cliffhangers you've got, I think that the best one is the
- 1:04:57doctor getting shot, You know, because you genuinely look at
- 1:05:02that and you think what the fuck is going to happen next?
- 1:05:05Oh, Sound of Drums for me. I watched Sound of Drums 10
- 1:05:09times that week. I did.
- 1:05:11That no, I did that with The Stolen Earth.
- 1:05:13I think that's a phenomenal episode.
- 1:05:15Yeah, I think the ending of that and I think Moffett goes one
- 1:05:19better with Pandorica opens because.
- 1:05:23You know. What absolute silence.
- 1:05:27What he describes. Very.
- 1:05:27Exciting, he describes. He actually destroys the
- 1:05:30universe. It's.
- 1:05:31Like with a whimper, though Fraser with a whimper.
- 1:05:33The threat is that the universe is going to be destroyed.
- 1:05:36So you kind of expect the plot to be resolved before that
- 1:05:40point. But he goes, no, actually,
- 1:05:41that's going to be me cliffhanger.
- 1:05:42I'm going to destroy the universe and then I'm going to
- 1:05:44spend an episode explaining I'll get out of it.
- 1:05:46That's that's the cleverness of that.
- 1:05:48It's a stunning cliffhanger. The Pandora opens, but I think
- 1:05:52the Cliff I read Army a Ghost got everyone jumping out of
- 1:05:55their seats and ringing their friends.
- 1:05:57Whereas I think the silence at the end of the universe was sort
- 1:06:00of like, oh, that was good. It was the regeneration that was
- 1:06:04the one that really, really got everyone.
- 1:06:08Yeah. How much does Susan Twist look
- 1:06:10like Marcus Scarman in a minute in the distance?
- 1:06:14Is that why she's wearing that sort of bright suit?
- 1:06:17It's probably a call back, isn't it?
- 1:06:19I mean if you can do it. Though I bring Suit X gift of
- 1:06:23death to all humanity. I mean, it's proper horror,
- 1:06:27isn't it? It's real horror, of course.
- 1:06:32Yeah. All the hardest is making
- 1:06:33noises. The weird clouds going crazy.
- 1:06:38There's always coming out of the dark.
- 1:06:39The woman's chanting. The God of all gods has
- 1:06:44returned. I can't.
- 1:06:45Believe him has been it was it was the moment where he said and
- 1:06:48his name is set that I thought, oh God, oh right, oh fuck.
- 1:06:53He's. Done.
- 1:06:53I'll just shout out to Mark. No, he's not.
- 1:06:56He's not. He is.
- 1:06:57He is. It's a great reveal.
- 1:07:04It was the wrong anagram, and it wasn't even an anagram.
- 1:07:08That's such a. Shit line, isn't it?
- 1:07:11It was the wrong anagram. And just to remind us, it's
- 1:07:15Doctor Who with this shitty CGI dog, he.
- 1:07:19Got his eye colour wrong. Yeah, but I love the zombie
- 1:07:24though. Zombie Susan twist.
- 1:07:25Zombies good, aren't they? Yeah.
- 1:07:28The Zombie Susan and the Zombie Harriet.
- 1:07:32And this man is so stupid. They'll say it.
- 1:07:34Get away from her. Oh God, the way she looks at the
- 1:07:37camera. Yeah, zombies.
- 1:07:39Goodness of that. Yeah.
- 1:07:43And really, like, if you if it's a penultimate episode, yeah,
- 1:07:46like, surely the this is the most important part of this
- 1:07:49episode. Yes, I'm watching next week at
- 1:07:53the cinema or whatever. Oh.
- 1:07:57Look at this I. Hate that gift of death to all
- 1:08:01humanity. When Russell T Tables phoned me
- 1:08:05up and said I was going to be playing all these parts, he
- 1:08:06didn't say I was going to be slapped with Latex.
- 1:08:11I want Ruby in the snow. That's a lovely image as well,
- 1:08:14isn't it? And her mum's coming towards
- 1:08:17that, all the build up. Yeah, and there's still a lot to
- 1:08:21answer here. I mean, there is, isn't it?
- 1:08:25Because all that you go into this thing and there's going to
- 1:08:28be, you know, questions answered, there really isn't.
- 1:08:33No, no, there's no. It's all.
- 1:08:35Questions We still don't know who Mrs. Flood is.
- 1:08:38We still don't know who Ruby's mom is.
- 1:08:40We know that Susan Twist is, or Susan Triad is Suitex Servant.
- 1:08:49You know that. That's all we really know.
- 1:08:50We've got a bit of the Susan Twist mystery solved, but
- 1:08:54everything else is still really open the air, isn't it?
- 1:08:57And we've got Shooty's first cliffhanger face.
- 1:09:00It's wonderful and you know what, someone did a side by side
- 1:09:03comparison with Shooty Gatwa and Elizabeth Slayden when the
- 1:09:06mummy's going for her and the facial expression was exactly
- 1:09:09the same. Yeah, well look boys continued.
- 1:09:14What I'm going to suggest is we do our three fabulous things at
- 1:09:17the end of the second episode because we've got 15 minutes and
- 1:09:21Fraser has put out on Twitter for insane predictions from the
- 1:09:26Ham fam before. We do that.
- 1:09:29I want our insane predictions. Oh Christ, sorry I first.
- 1:09:35OK, well, I'm going to go with the with the theory that I'm
- 1:09:40going to stick with my theory that Mrs. Blood is Romana and
- 1:09:43that's that's my thing. And that the doctor will defeat
- 1:09:47Zutek. But there will be a bigger
- 1:09:49mystery underlying this. That Zutek is the is the
- 1:09:53Mcguffin that is hiding something bigger or smaller or
- 1:09:59more important behind it. I'm going to predict that
- 1:10:04there's going to be some similar beats to last of the Time Lords
- 1:10:08that we are going to see, because we've seen that scene of
- 1:10:11all the smoke going through all the sand going through London or
- 1:10:14wherever it is. So we're going to see the
- 1:10:16devastation that Sue Tech could bring to the whole world.
- 1:10:20You know, maybe even a call back to that bit in the Devil's
- 1:10:23Court, that fabulous sort of in London.
- 1:10:27And I think the conclusion of the story will absolutely be
- 1:10:31tied into Ruby's mum. But that isn't just going to be
- 1:10:35but whoever that is. And I'm absolutely convinced
- 1:10:38it's going to be Helena Bonham Carter.
- 1:10:40And I don't know why because I know Russell intervened when
- 1:10:43Helena Bonham Carter was approached by Chris Chibnall and
- 1:10:47said no, don't take that role from Chris Chibnall, I'm going
- 1:10:49to give you a better role and I'm coming back and I'd swear
- 1:10:52she's going to be Ruby's mum. That's my prediction.
- 1:10:55She's just let's play Nollie. Well, I was trying to find the
- 1:11:01the synopsis for the next week's.
- 1:11:05So because it does say something along the lines of, you know,
- 1:11:07the doctors defeated these timeless enemies one, you know,
- 1:11:12and which I thought we're going to get a proper sort of Steven
- 1:11:15Moffati type end game and enter this where it would be like,
- 1:11:19yeah, suit like is revealed, but then does exactly what suit X
- 1:11:22going to do when like destroy the Earth.
- 1:11:24And then it's going to be like Avengers end game and you're
- 1:11:26going to have to kind of work backwards from that to save it.
- 1:11:29So yeah, obviously suit X going to be defeated.
- 1:11:32Wouldn't could take that as? Fraser because.
- 1:11:37It's outrageous. Outrageous.
- 1:11:39I figured this was going to be called Sue Tech.
- 1:11:41Who from now? On how is that going to happen?
- 1:11:45Well, there's probably going to be a Deus somewhere.
- 1:11:48Ah well. Yes, I mean, yes.
- 1:11:50Someone, no one's wait, Stephen Moffitt's been rested in his ear
- 1:11:54going no, don't do that, don't do that.
- 1:11:55I'll think of site cleverer. But, you know, we're going to
- 1:11:58have, you know, a lot of sort of emotions on the way.
- 1:12:01There's going to be a lot of drama.
- 1:12:02There's going to be a lot of, you know, excitement and.
- 1:12:05Emotion. There'll be lots of emotion.
- 1:12:08Or we're going to find out who Mrs. Floyd is.
- 1:12:10I think we will find out who Mrs. Floyd is.
- 1:12:12I'm not entirely sure we'll find out who Ruby's mom is, but I
- 1:12:16could be wrong on that because the other thing that synopsis
- 1:12:20said was that the future of the earth lies in one woman dot dot
- 1:12:23dot. So that could well be Mrs.
- 1:12:26Floyd. But I actually think it's Cherry
- 1:12:27Sunday. Oh, wouldn't that be wonderful?
- 1:12:30I think what's going to happen is there's going to be like some
- 1:12:32big sort of like climatic showdown between the Doctor and
- 1:12:35suit deck. You know, suit decks going to be
- 1:12:37lording it over the Doctor. He's going to be sort of like on
- 1:12:39his knees and UNIT HQ and then Cherry Sunday's just going to
- 1:12:41storm through the door and go with someone gave me a cup of
- 1:12:44tea and. If that's the ending, he wins
- 1:12:48all of Doctor Who. Well, we know how powerful tea
- 1:12:52is in our Russell C Davis Doctor Who.
- 1:12:54And she's been asking since church on Ruby Rd., doesn't she?
- 1:12:58Well, I'm not at the star of tea.
- 1:13:00Is it going to be like a Duggan style pay off with the punch but
- 1:13:03it's going to be a cup of tea instead?
- 1:13:04Chucking a cup of tea over suit tech.
- 1:13:07We'll destroy him. Right, let's go to Twitter.
- 1:13:11OK, let's go to Twitter and we'll we'll see who agrees with
- 1:13:15me. We've got Peter Sharples.
- 1:13:18Peter Sharples says RTD Deus Ex machina ending.
- 1:13:23We've also got K9 recaps who says whatever happens Cherry
- 1:13:27Sunday, we'll finally get a cup of tea.
- 1:13:29Yeah, my God. So they are in tune with you.
- 1:13:33Hellsworth says Ruby drops herself off at the church after
- 1:13:37finding her baby self abandoned somewhere else.
- 1:13:40Suitek will be defeated easily. With my earlier point being the
- 1:13:43main focus of the episode. I'll have to go and find what
- 1:13:45your earlier point is. Hellsworth, Sorry and Mrs. Floyd
- 1:13:48will remain a mystery for the next season.
- 1:13:50But you know that thing about Ruby dropping herself off when I
- 1:13:54first watched Churchill Rd. where you saw it in the cinema?
- 1:13:56Yeah, I I figured that was the case, but I had to think that
- 1:13:59would be too easy now. That would be too obvious.
- 1:14:02Will I am never knew he was a fan, but there you go.
- 1:14:05The lamppost could be a TARDIS with a functioning comedian
- 1:14:08circuit that broke down trapping the Ronnie who was masquerading
- 1:14:12as in a Mrs. Flood anagram of Ronnie, Rain, rain and floods.
- 1:14:17RTD does love an anagram. Oh, I mean I would love to see
- 1:14:21the row on the back, but I. Have to go and read these from
- 1:14:24the top actually because I think and read them out of order.
- 1:14:26I do love these people that only use, you know, Doctor Who
- 1:14:29continuity as their explosions for everything.
- 1:14:33Dave, Rennie. Hi, Dave.
- 1:14:35Hello guys. I think.
- 1:14:38I think the hooded figure will be Mrs. Flood, but she is not
- 1:14:41Ruby's mom. She was asked to leave her there
- 1:14:44and keep a watch on her. By dot dot dot.
- 1:14:47The real Susan. I'd be the first to say it ain't
- 1:14:50Susan or Ronnie, except that, but Susan's name keeps coming
- 1:14:53up. Yeah.
- 1:14:54Box. Set.
- 1:14:55No, they're, they're leading up the summit with Susan.
- 1:14:58There's no way there will be all these drops.
- 1:15:00Well, we thought that with with Series 10, didn't we?
- 1:15:03And then we didn't get that at all.
- 1:15:05But I think it's been more prominent here, yes, and lots of
- 1:15:08discussion about who she is. Yeah.
- 1:15:12Paul Quinn says it's RTD, All his season finales are the same.
- 1:15:17The only one that really works is the end of old season one
- 1:15:22brackets, maybe four as he's quarter of having made the
- 1:15:25scripts more simple. It's going to be more fucking
- 1:15:27stupid and emotional than usual. We're already at the shit
- 1:15:31anagram stage. Oh, I love you, but still trying
- 1:15:34to shit over everyone's good time, all right?
- 1:15:37Dan Hollsworth. Plus season 28 as bad as you
- 1:15:39think so on go. Dan Hollingsworth I'm hoping the
- 1:15:44unit time window also has a floppy disk port as well as AVHS
- 1:15:48slot, right? And a disk man.
- 1:15:53Also, more seriously, if they don't have an epilogue of the
- 1:15:57Doctor popping back to finally see Susan at the end Honey
- 1:16:00grandfather, then they've wasted an opportunity.
- 1:16:04Where's my doctor? The original.
- 1:16:07I do wonder if Susan will be in. It's a Christmas special.
- 1:16:10You know, I'm wondering if that's going to be the big
- 1:16:12Caroline Ford episode. Oscar Groucho.
- 1:16:17It's the lamppost lads. Ruby's mother is pointing at the
- 1:16:20lamppost. The lamppost wasn't there in
- 1:16:23church on Ruby Rd. I'm getting serious.
- 1:16:26Last of the Time Lords vibes in how this episode is going to be
- 1:16:29plotted. PS I'm planning a superb, superb
- 1:16:33bit of art for the finale. I've I've seen that, I've seen a
- 1:16:36preview of it. It's very, very good.
- 1:16:38Always send it to me as well, so we're in the know.
- 1:16:42Everyone's obsessed with this, with this lamppost, continuity,
- 1:16:45era or plot point. Well, maybe it's and dot and
- 1:16:49Bubble had a prominent lamppost scene.
- 1:16:52Oh my God, what if there's been a lamppost in every?
- 1:16:54Yeah. It's the same lamppost appearing
- 1:16:58through time. It's all going back to Narnia.
- 1:17:00It's all going back to the doctor, the widow in the
- 1:17:02wardrobe. Ruby's Marge is going to be.
- 1:17:05It's Marge. It's Marge from.
- 1:17:07Doctor Mrs. Flood in CS Lewis. Oh, sorry.
- 1:17:11Well, Speaking of Mrs. Flood, Daniel Warnsley says Mrs. Flood
- 1:17:15is not of this world. Neither is Ruby's mother.
- 1:17:18Maybe she is Susan the doctor and Kate will fall out.
- 1:17:22Caroline Ford will give a performance that will stun us
- 1:17:24all. Think it.
- 1:17:27Always does. Like RTD finales, the verdict
- 1:17:31will be that it didn't live up to part one until we all change
- 1:17:34our minds in six weeks. Good.
- 1:17:37Work, Daniel. He knows Doctor Who fans,
- 1:17:41doesn't he? He does.
- 1:17:43We've got Gareth Bowley who says Ruby is the child born of 73
- 1:17:47yards divergent Ruby and as such she has a power that can vanish
- 1:17:52Zutek. It likely cut off Ruby from the
- 1:17:55doctor. That is bad shit.
- 1:17:56Crazy, but I love it. That's.
- 1:17:58Brilliant, isn't it? I like that.
- 1:18:00The Gareth that ain't going to come to be, but please write
- 1:18:02that story for us, all right? No, not the main probe, which I
- 1:18:07think is from. Who corners corner?
- 1:18:11Corner, corner. Yes, Mrs. Floyd is actually a
- 1:18:13biblical plague. And also Horus.
- 1:18:16She has robot mummies in her kitchen dressed in pennies.
- 1:18:19I'll play. Do some more.
- 1:18:22Don't we all? She does some mumbo jumbo on
- 1:18:25Ruby, who it turns out has a secret snow power which will
- 1:18:28banish Suitek to the dimension in which Rogue is imprisoned and
- 1:18:30take her with it. Oh my God, Paul for showrunner.
- 1:18:36If he's bringing back Suitek and he doesn't bring back mummy tits
- 1:18:39then. Yeah, then we're.
- 1:18:41All quiet. I've had no opportunity to say
- 1:18:43it. Yeah, I hope there is a mummy
- 1:18:44next week. Sean, the Mondassian sidekick.
- 1:18:48The Doctor will go back to visit Susan Foreman.
- 1:18:50At the end, they will have a heartfelt reunion, and when the
- 1:18:53Doctor leaves, there's a hint of a golden glow about to emerge,
- 1:18:56suggesting that Susan may be about to regenerate.
- 1:18:59Carol and Ford will reprise Susan briefly.
- 1:19:03Chris Hogben the actor. Hello Chris.
- 1:19:06Hello Chris. The actual Susan twist is Mrs.
- 1:19:09Floyd is Susan laughing emoji. UNIT are angry with the Doctor
- 1:19:13and they will take a more adversarial role going forward.
- 1:19:17Oh. No, I don't think that's going
- 1:19:19to happen. I don't think that's going to
- 1:19:20happen because Rusty Davis was saying, but how he's going to
- 1:19:22keep having old characters coming up in that unit set all
- 1:19:25the time. He's kind of basing this on the
- 1:19:27look that Kate gave the doctor. I think that was just a moment.
- 1:19:31Yeah, she just lost somebody. Brad Wolf Ruby is Ruby is
- 1:19:39Susan's child. She left herself at the church.
- 1:19:45Susan will come here at the end. We won't find out everything
- 1:19:48though, including who Mrs. Flood is.
- 1:19:50Ruby will stay behind on Earth. The first spin off will be
- 1:19:52announced next week. There's a guy, Brendan Jones.
- 1:19:58Anyone know him? Oh, I've.
- 1:19:59Heard of him? Nice guy, little.
- 1:20:02Is he packs quite well into those wrestling outfits.
- 1:20:06In fairness, the word saying that everyone's a little
- 1:20:08compared with you. That is very true, but he is
- 1:20:12particular. Are you talking down?
- 1:20:14But like no, please move on. Duzan will appear, played by
- 1:20:19Caroline Ford. Mrs. Arya Flood is a projection
- 1:20:23of River Song from within the library date.
- 1:20:25No, please no. She's done it before in the name
- 1:20:30of the Doctor. Anything but that.
- 1:20:34Brendan gives some alternatives for Mrs. Floyd.
- 1:20:36Allegra is my second choice for Mrs. Floyd's first name.
- 1:20:39Celeste is at the outside, but it doesn't fit in with the
- 1:20:43melody slash song theme. Oh.
- 1:20:47Brendan. Andy Drews I think it's all a
- 1:20:52dream and Ruby wakes up only to find she's fallen asleep in
- 1:20:54front of the TV on Christmas Day while watching the Doctor Who's
- 1:20:57special. She drowned herself into the
- 1:20:59episode, and now the master of the land of fiction has her
- 1:21:01prisoner in a chronic hysteresis.
- 1:21:03No, she's a supermarket worker and she goes, I've had this
- 1:21:06wonderful dream. Oh, I'm happy.
- 1:21:08The Doctor Who's? Got cold connections, Who says?
- 1:21:13I predict the doctor will run around a lot and recite his
- 1:21:16dialogue really fast. Well, yes, that's a good.
- 1:21:19One DJ Alpha T in the house, Mrs. Floyd might be connected to
- 1:21:24Horace, Niall, Floyd, Rebirth, etcetera.
- 1:21:28There will be a cow land for Cameo, Ruby might not be real
- 1:21:32and my big prediction? Mel is going to die.
- 1:21:35No. You can't kill Mel the horror.
- 1:21:39Either killed or sacrifices herself to save the Doctor.
- 1:21:42No, I think we'll be seeing Mel for some.
- 1:21:44Time. You know what that that thing
- 1:21:46about Ruby? One thing we keep forgetting is
- 1:21:51that there's that scan that the doctor did right at the start
- 1:21:56that hasn't been touched on and is is there in plain sight.
- 1:22:01And yeah, who knows? Right, I've got a few more to
- 1:22:05read form Joe's retweet, so Mark Donaldson.
- 1:22:09Hello, Mark. It's an RTD finale so I expect
- 1:22:12lots of exciting moments and great imagery that doesn't make
- 1:22:15a lick of sense. Shoot, he steals David's
- 1:22:17tortoise when he's not looking because his suiteki one has
- 1:22:20become destroyed. The destroyed tortoise becomes
- 1:22:22remembered tortoise from tortoise tales.
- 1:22:26That could give a good explanation and as to why the
- 1:22:28two Tardises were there, yeah. Ian Work.
- 1:22:31Ian Banks This Suitek is actually a no thing from well
- 1:22:35beyond that that successfully killed an impersonated original
- 1:22:38Suitek. The Doctor will defeat him by
- 1:22:41dancing very slowly to the diegetic music.
- 1:22:46James H. The time window accidentally
- 1:22:49creates the Memory TARDIS. Mrs. Floyd is the Harbinner, the
- 1:22:52Horus. Ruby's mother is Ruby from the
- 1:22:55Suitec infected future and has used the Memory TARDIS to go
- 1:22:58back and place the Ruby that eventually imprisoned Suitec,
- 1:23:01causing the reset switch ending because it does have to be a
- 1:23:04reset. Yeah, there will be a reset
- 1:23:06somewhere, definitely. And Gavin?
- 1:23:08Paid for it. Gavin Bicep, The Doctor will
- 1:23:13defeat Zutek. He won't get a cameo.
- 1:23:15We won't get a cameo of Susan. And we still won't know who Mrs.
- 1:23:18Flood is. OK, sport, there's a Pete
- 1:23:23Lambert. Oh, all of him.
- 1:23:26Actually pops up now again with with checking out and Kate's
- 1:23:30going. To fire pops up every now and
- 1:23:31again. Kate's Kate's going to fire
- 1:23:37everyone who has to be paid full adult.
- 1:23:40Wait, minimum wage? Fair.
- 1:23:44Get that kid out of here. Place the workforce for slave
- 1:23:48kids, Andy. Parkinson she should get rid of
- 1:23:51Rose, right? She don't do much.
- 1:23:55Andy Parkinson says I'm hoping we get an appearance by Susan,
- 1:23:58possibly Carol Ann Ford. I wonder if the Triad tech will
- 1:24:02somehow be used to defeat Suitek.
- 1:24:05Why is everyone so keen to see Carol Ann Ford?
- 1:24:08Does nobody remember what a dreadful actress she is?
- 1:24:17Oh no. Jeff Richardson, your law
- 1:24:20master. Apparently Ruby is Satan's
- 1:24:22daughter and also the only person that can defeat him.
- 1:24:25Satan's daughter. OK.
- 1:24:28Missus Flood is some sort of TV demon.
- 1:24:31Mel and Doc will ride their scooter up and around the new
- 1:24:34unit building. The lovely Joe Short does keep
- 1:24:38it short and says Susan is Ruby's man.
- 1:24:42I've had that from DJ Alpha Tea. I've got a Mark Harrison
- 1:24:45sticking to my original bet that Mrs. Floyd is Ruby's mom.
- 1:24:49She's older, yes, but time travel?
- 1:24:51I still think she's the likeness of the characters currently
- 1:24:53around and the likelist to shock Brian May when Anita Dobson told
- 1:24:57him about it. Oh yes.
- 1:25:00Yeah. Also, Sue Tech sings walk like
- 1:25:06an Egyptian. Oh please.
- 1:25:15Any more? Four more to go.
- 1:25:17Andrew Blair Next season's new companion is Susan, having
- 1:25:20regenerated out of Anita Dobson mode.
- 1:25:24TWWASC. That's the with the small
- 1:25:28collection. OK OK so I think everyone is
- 1:25:32going to get an on screen death apart from best girl.
- 1:25:35Mel will be in the dock. I think those three will be
- 1:25:37saved somehow and then the three of them will fight Suitek.
- 1:25:40But one thing's for certain, there will be a huge reset
- 1:25:42button at the end of Reset the Universe, MA Salko Suitek ends
- 1:25:47up trapped in a junkie VHS recording.
- 1:25:50Oh please. Like the?
- 1:25:52Wind last one we've got to read out is Colin Hicks and Ruby as
- 1:25:56some sort of avatar of the Eye of Horus and thus the key to re
- 1:25:59imprisoning Suitek. Mrs. is in a siren working
- 1:26:04against him, potentially Isis. A lot of people have are
- 1:26:07thinking about horrors coming in, aren't they being in the
- 1:26:09guise of somebody we've already met?
- 1:26:11I am going to make one last ridiculous prediction.
- 1:26:14OK, hurry up, I've got a run. Yeah, we have got the unit set,
- 1:26:18we have got Mel, we have got Rose, we have got Kate
- 1:26:21Lethbridge Stew, we have got the blinks.
- 1:26:23The only thing where you're really missing from the giggle
- 1:26:26is David Tennant. I do.
- 1:26:31Think Catherine Tate. I do think we're going to see
- 1:26:34David Tennant, yes. I think we're going to see both
- 1:26:37of them, actually. The absence of the 14th Doctor
- 1:26:39is going to be a little bit too conspicuous.
- 1:26:41Yes, I, I think that again, Russell has said, oh, there's no
- 1:26:46way David Tennant's story is done.
- 1:26:49I think for all I'm saying Cherry Sunday is going to storm
- 1:26:52through the doors of the climactic end with the the Power
- 1:26:56Slap on Suitec. I think that could well be the
- 1:26:5814th Doctor. Well, there are some enticing
- 1:27:02predictions there from the Ham fam.
- 1:27:05We'll be back next week with the TO.
- 1:27:08See who's right and who's the. Rousing stroke, disappointing
- 1:27:13finale. Depending on which way we fall.
- 1:27:16Boys, can we go out by singing Walk Like an Egyptian please
- 1:27:21This. Is.
- 1:27:25The worst? Guy, you bring sutax gift of
- 1:27:32shit karaoke to all humanity. And I'll cut it there.
