- 1:17That is after the show is over.
- 1:19All right, guys, let's get ready to show.
- 1:21This is Inspirations for Your Life.
- 1:23I'm so happy to be with you guys.
- 1:25Yes.
- 1:26I'm John C.
- 1:27Morley.
- 1:27In case you didn't know, I'm a serial
- 1:28entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast host,
- 1:32coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, passionate lifelong learner,
- 1:36and now very grateful to be a published
- 1:39author.
- 1:41All right, guys, let's dive in, shall we?
- 1:44So how focus shapes daily performance is what
- 1:47we're talking about.
- 1:49And that's what we're about today.
- 1:53And this is basically series five, show 20,
- 1:56episode number four.
- 1:58The episode of Inspirations for Your Life explores
- 2:00how attention directly shapes execution, clarity, energy, and
- 2:05real-world performance.
- 2:06When focus is stable, work becomes easier, decisions
- 2:09become clearer, and results become, yes, more consistent.
- 2:13When attention is scattered, even simple tasks feel
- 2:18heavier, and harder, and less controlled.
- 2:21So today, I want to break down how
- 2:24attention drives performance in real time.
- 2:27I think this is something that a lot
- 2:28of people don't pay attention to, and often
- 2:31why they're probably not happy about where they
- 2:35are in life.
- 2:36And you see, you can make changes.
- 2:37If you're not happy with where you are
- 2:39in life, you actually can make changes anytime
- 2:41you want.
- 2:42Okay?
- 2:42But you have to do it intentionally.
- 2:44That is the most important thing.
- 2:45So number one, guys, execution depends on clarity.
- 2:48Without clarity, execution becomes muddy, uncertain, and inconsistent,
- 2:53and can't go anywhere.
- 2:55So focus controls accuracy.
- 2:58The sharper your attention, the fewer mistakes you
- 3:00make.
- 3:02Number three, attention drives performance.
- 3:06Attention drives performance.
- 3:07So that's important to know.
- 3:10Where focus goes, results immediately follow.
- 3:14When I say immediately, it's not going to
- 3:16be that day, but it will be eventually.
- 3:19Okay?
- 3:19It will take you some time, but it
- 3:21will actually get you to a point where
- 3:22you're going to be like, oh, wow, this
- 3:24is kind of cool.
- 3:24This is really neat.
- 3:26And so I can tell you guys that
- 3:28it's important to understand what's going on and
- 3:34why things are going a certain way.
- 3:36I think a lot of people don't really
- 3:38get the fact of what's going on, and
- 3:40then they wonder why stuff is a mess.
- 3:44And it's because of, well, it's because of
- 3:46their own inner stuff, okay?
- 3:51And when you realize that it's your own
- 3:53stuff, you're like, well, wait a minute.
- 3:55I can change this.
- 3:56I can fix this.
- 3:56And you know, the truth of the matter,
- 3:58guys, you really can fix it, but you
- 4:03might not be able to do it today,
- 4:05okay?
- 4:06That's probably the thing I want to share
- 4:08with you.
- 4:08You might not be able to do it
- 4:09today, but you are going to be able
- 4:10to do it, and you are going to
- 4:11be able to change.
- 4:12Number four, guys, distraction reduces output.
- 4:16Every interruption breaks momentum and weakens progress.
- 4:21And a lot of people don't understand, like,
- 4:23you know, what's going on.
- 4:24But when that happens, it puts a lot
- 4:26of people in the disarray, like, oh, I
- 4:27don't know what I'm supposed to do anymore.
- 4:30And it shouldn't do that.
- 4:31It should be teaching a lesson.
- 4:32Say, wait a minute.
- 4:32I can do this.
- 4:33I can do this.
- 4:34But you have to understand, you have to
- 4:36have faith, and you have to have strong
- 4:38belief in yourself.
- 4:39That's really important.
- 4:40Number five.
- 4:41Number five is a good one.
- 4:43Ladies and gentlemen, work reflects thinking quality.
- 4:49You're not happy with your work?
- 4:51Well, it's probably the quality of your thinking.
- 4:53You're probably not, you know, doing something solely.
- 4:56You're trying to multitask.
- 4:58Clear thinking produces stronger execution outcomes.
- 5:01Clear thinking, that's more relaxed, easygoing thinking, not
- 5:08pressured thinking.
- 5:10Number six, guys, clarity improves execution.
- 5:13Better understanding leads to faster and cleaner action.
- 5:16Okay, that's an important thing, guys.
- 5:18It does.
- 5:19But again, it does not happen overnight.
- 5:22And if you're thinking it's going to happen
- 5:23overnight, well, you're going to be sadly mistaken,
- 5:25and you're going to be a little bit
- 5:27disappointed, to be quite honest with you, all
- 5:29right?
- 5:30Number seven, focus increases speed.
- 5:35Stable attention removes hesitation and delays.
- 5:41Decisions become cleaner, less mental, noise leads to
- 5:45stronger judgment.
- 5:47Output follows.
- 5:49Number nine, attention.
- 5:51So your results are a mirror of your
- 5:53focus level.
- 5:54Now, we never talked about level before, but
- 5:56level is just a way of saying quality,
- 5:59right?
- 6:00If you're not happy with what you're getting,
- 6:01there's a good shot, you're probably not in
- 6:04a good level.
- 6:05You're probably not clear enough.
- 6:07And what happens is you get distractions around,
- 6:10and those distractions prevent you from focusing on
- 6:13something clearly.
- 6:14Maybe you've worked on something, and maybe somebody
- 6:16was bothering you, and you kept getting it
- 6:18wrong, right?
- 6:19When you focus on something, not hard, just
- 6:23focus on it, and you have nothing else
- 6:24in your mind, you'll find that you can
- 6:26be more productive, and you can be more
- 6:29efficient.
- 6:30But not only that, you can get things
- 6:32correct the first time.
- 6:34Number 10, guys, stability improves reliability.
- 6:37When we're stable, we become more reliable.
- 6:41Consistent attention creates consistent performance, right?
- 6:46You don't do it once and say, oh
- 6:47my gosh, this is what I've got.
- 6:48Number 11, execution becomes more predictable.
- 6:54Structured focus leads to repeatable outcomes.
- 7:00And I think when we understand that our
- 7:03outcomes can be repeated over and over again,
- 7:05it's like, okay, now I finally get it.
- 7:07Now I know what's going on.
- 7:08Now I know why something's working or why
- 7:10something is not working, okay?
- 7:13I think that's a very important thing.
- 7:16But some people, again, they get caught in
- 7:18the weeds and are like, I can't do
- 7:20this.
- 7:21That's what they basically say, I can't do
- 7:23this.
- 7:23And as soon as you say you can't
- 7:25do this, well, as Henry Ford said, if
- 7:28you say it, you're right.
- 7:29If you say you can, you're also right.
- 7:31Number 12, guys, attention reduces errors, right?
- 7:35Just because you're doing something, you're being efficient,
- 7:37doesn't mean that you're not making mistakes.
- 7:39Fewer distractions mean fewer mistakes in execution, and
- 7:43thus more efficiency because now you don't have
- 7:44to redo everything.
- 7:47It's one thing to do things correctly.
- 7:49One thing to be efficient and do them
- 7:51wrong.
- 7:51Oh, that's a bad thing.
- 7:53Number 13, focus improves workflow.
- 7:57Tasks move more smoothly when attention is stable.
- 8:02And you'll find that that natural progression, that
- 8:04natural flow becomes something pretty easy.
- 8:12And maybe you're saying to me, John, you
- 8:14know, this happens to me once in a
- 8:16while, or it happens to me every year.
- 8:18And then you go down this pathway and
- 8:21you're like, how do I get out of
- 8:23this pathway?
- 8:25You're trying to do too many things and
- 8:27not be intentional.
- 8:28That's the real bottom line, guys.
- 8:31Number 14, clarity reduces confusion.
- 8:34So when we get clear, we actually erase
- 8:37confusion.
- 8:38Not overnight, but we make things, we make
- 8:40that window that was foggy, we slowly make
- 8:43it a little bit clearer until you can
- 8:45completely see outside.
- 8:47Clear thinking eliminates hesitation in action.
- 8:51But clear thinking is not something that just,
- 8:53you know, poofs out of the sky.
- 8:57I had a moment tonight, which I want
- 8:59to share with you guys.
- 9:00So I was preparing for one of my
- 9:02keynotes.
- 9:03And I was all ready to go, pretty
- 9:05much just doing some final polishing on the
- 9:07slides.
- 9:08And I had an epiphany moment where the
- 9:12presentation became so real when I started putting
- 9:15the elements together, it was as if I
- 9:17was actually on stage.
- 9:20And that didn't happen overnight.
- 9:22That happened by an awareness that my brain
- 9:26finally caught up with.
- 9:29Number 15, guys, performance improves with focus.
- 9:33Strong attention directly improves output quality.
- 9:37The output quality.
- 9:40Quality is another word for thinking about the
- 9:43correctness.
- 9:45How correct is something?
- 9:46I think that's important to know.
- 9:49If you spend all this time and you
- 9:50do things wrong, maybe you're working in a
- 9:53factory or you're working on a project, and
- 9:56everything you did was wrong, that's a big
- 9:58problem.
- 10:00Number 16, guys, distraction creates delays.
- 10:04Every interruption slows down progress significantly.
- 10:09Number 17, attention improves structure.
- 10:15Attention improves structure.
- 10:17When we have structure and we have consistency,
- 10:21we have success.
- 10:26We repeat a pattern over and over again,
- 10:28we're going to get the same results.
- 10:29Now, if it's not yielding us results and
- 10:31we keep doing it, well, that's insanity.
- 10:33So we don't want to do that over
- 10:35and over again.
- 10:35So organized thinking leads to organized execution.
- 10:39Pretty straightforward.
- 10:41But how do you get organized when you're
- 10:43a mess?
- 10:45Well, I think the easiest way to do
- 10:46that is to break things into micro components
- 10:49or into smaller steps.
- 10:51And when you do that, it's like you're
- 10:54able to look at just a part of
- 10:58it, right?
- 10:58Maybe you've worked on a huge, maybe 1
- 11:01,000 or 5,000, 10,000 piece jigsaw
- 11:03puzzle.
- 11:04To do all that overnight is impossible.
- 11:08But if you do a piece of it
- 11:10at a time, it becomes manageable.
- 11:15Number 18, guys, execution reflects mindset.
- 11:20The way we execute, the way we act,
- 11:23reflects our mindset.
- 11:28Your internal focus determines your external results.
- 11:32So the way you think about yourself, the
- 11:34way you believe about yourself is going to
- 11:36affect how you act in real life.
- 11:43If you're like, oh, that's not me, it
- 11:44is.
- 11:47It is you, but you have to realize
- 11:50that sometimes things don't go the way you
- 11:54want.
- 11:55So you have to analyze and say, gee,
- 11:57why did this go the way?
- 11:58How can I make that be better next
- 12:01time?
- 12:02Not to criticize, but say, gee, how can
- 12:05I become just a little bit better this
- 12:08time at?
- 12:09I mean, how can I actually do that?
- 12:14So I think that's an important thing to
- 12:16definitely realize.
- 12:17Number 19, focus improves consistency.
- 12:22When we focus, and I don't mean squinting
- 12:25really hard and putting a lot of stress
- 12:26on yourself, just focusing lightly.
- 12:30Stable attention creates repeatable performance.
- 12:34It's a formula, guys.
- 12:36And so when we learn how to do
- 12:38something right, we want to do that again
- 12:40and again.
- 12:40We know how to bake cookies a certain
- 12:42way, and we like it, or a cake.
- 12:44We save the recipe, and we can do
- 12:45it over and over and over again.
- 12:47And by us doing it over and over
- 12:47again, you know what happens?
- 12:49We can repeat the process.
- 12:51Number 20, guys, clarity improves decision making.
- 12:55So when we're clear, we're able to make
- 12:58decisions about something without getting all, let's say,
- 13:04messed up or entangled.
- 13:07Like the realization I had tonight, that happened
- 13:10in me because of the work I was
- 13:12putting in, and because of all my other
- 13:14skills, they kind of linked up and were
- 13:16like, wait a minute, this actually makes sense
- 13:18now.
- 13:18This makes sense.
- 13:20Number 21, energy follows attention.
- 13:24Where focus goes, our mental energy flows.
- 13:33It flows.
- 13:35I think that's a very important thing to
- 13:39realize.
- 13:40Number 22, guys, fragmentation reduces efficiency.
- 13:45We've learned this with hard disks and SSDs.
- 13:47Fragmented drives and files, it's inefficient.
- 13:52Scattered thinking weakens our productivity.
- 13:54So we need to stop the scattered thinking
- 13:56right now.
- 13:58Number 23, focus improves problem solving.
- 14:07So clear attention reveals better solutions.
- 14:10But I don't want you to think that
- 14:11just thinking clearly one time is going to
- 14:13get you a solution.
- 14:14It doesn't.
- 14:16It takes time for you to actually figure
- 14:18stuff out.
- 14:19That's what really happens.
- 14:20It takes time for you to figure stuff
- 14:22out.
- 14:23And when you can figure stuff out, that's
- 14:25when you can have these epiphanies.
- 14:29You can have these amazing moments.
- 14:32I think that's a very important thing to
- 14:38understand.
- 14:40Because that's key, right?
- 14:46I think that's key.
- 14:52And sometimes people get lost in where they
- 14:55are.
- 14:59And then they don't know what to do.
- 15:09And that can kind of cause people to
- 15:12go into a certain state.
- 15:15A state that makes them depressed.
- 15:18A state that says, hey, I can't do
- 15:20anything.
- 15:21But the truth of the matter is you
- 15:22can do things when you're clear.
- 15:25But so many people I know want to
- 15:27get the front porch and the back porch
- 15:30and everything all in the same breath.
- 15:34What we have to do is we have
- 15:35to just become aware of things.
- 15:39We need to become aware of things.
- 15:42And by becoming aware, life changes.
- 15:47Life changes.
- 15:49And life changes because of one reason.
- 15:52Because now you're looking at things differently.
- 15:57And when you look at things differently, your
- 15:59life changes.
- 16:02And that means your actions change.
- 16:05Your actions changed.
- 16:08And by your actions changing, you could say,
- 16:10you know what?
- 16:12Now I'm a different person.
- 16:17Your awareness alone, ladies and gentlemen, will make
- 16:20you a totally different person.
- 16:23When you're aware of what happened, you're like,
- 16:25wait a minute, this makes sense.
- 16:27I can do this, okay?
- 16:29But too many people get hung up in
- 16:31the I'm not this, I'm not that.
- 16:34I'm not enough of this.
- 16:35I'm not enough of that.
- 16:37And they really just put themselves into this
- 16:40panic.
- 16:50It's amazing, right?
- 16:55I know that a lot of people out
- 16:58there feel that they should get the answers
- 17:02immediately.
- 17:03But true, genuine answers don't come in a
- 17:07flash.
- 17:08They come in time.
- 17:12We have a slow realization of where we
- 17:15are and how that awareness is now changing
- 17:18us to where we could go.
- 17:22Where we could go.
- 17:25And when I think about where we could
- 17:26go, the biggest thing I could tell you
- 17:28is, if you're not happy where you are
- 17:31right now, there's a couple reasons for it.
- 17:35One, it's your belief.
- 17:37But it's also the energy that you're putting
- 17:39out.
- 17:39So the energy that you're putting out is
- 17:41actually affecting who you are every single day
- 17:44of your life.
- 17:47And if you don't like that, you can
- 17:50change that right now.
- 17:51But the results are not gonna change tomorrow.
- 17:55It's gonna take some time.
- 17:56Could take 30 days, could take more.
- 17:58It's gotta kind of work through a process.
- 18:02Number 24, guys, execution improves with practice.
- 18:07A lot of people don't wanna put the
- 18:08time in.
- 18:08They don't wanna execute things.
- 18:10They don't wanna do things like over and
- 18:12over again.
- 18:12They don't wanna get better.
- 18:13So practice doesn't make anything perfect.
- 18:16I wanna tell you that.
- 18:16A mentor told me this many years ago.
- 18:18John, practice does not make things perfect.
- 18:21It makes us better.
- 18:23When I played soccer for one of the
- 18:25best regional teams in Jersey when I was
- 18:30younger, he said to me, John, he says,
- 18:32we don't practice to become perfect.
- 18:35Why do we practice?
- 18:36We practice because we have to get better.
- 18:39We could always be better.
- 18:43Some people are not humble enough to understand
- 18:45that.
- 18:45Repeated focus strengthens performance habits.
- 18:48When we strengthen our performance habits, it's like
- 18:53we do it almost without thinking.
- 18:55And it becomes natural in the way that
- 18:59we are every day.
- 19:01But I know a lot of people that
- 19:03say, you know, I've done this, but this
- 19:05isn't working.
- 19:06And the reason it's not working, I'll tell
- 19:08you why.
- 19:09It's because of your belief, your belief.
- 19:15You could change your belief immediately, but that
- 19:18would not mean that you're going to go
- 19:21somewhere tomorrow, okay?
- 19:23You may not go somewhere tomorrow.
- 19:29And I can tell you that frustrates a
- 19:32lot of people that they're not going somewhere
- 19:34tomorrow, okay?
- 19:40Knowing that you're on a path to become
- 19:44better every day, I think should be a
- 19:48good thing to help you move forward, to
- 19:50become a little better than you were yesterday.
- 19:54People want to become the best tomorrow.
- 19:57And that's not realistic.
- 19:58We have to get a little bit better.
- 20:00And over time, a little better.
- 20:03Eventually, we start to say, wait a minute,
- 20:04there's huge, huge differences, right?
- 20:07Number 25, guys, attention reduces our overload.
- 20:14I'm not saying stress, anxiety, and attention.
- 20:17I'm saying attention that we have, light attention,
- 20:20reduces overload.
- 20:22And control focus, not this maniac focus that's
- 20:26going to give us a headache, all right?
- 20:30Prevents mental exhaustion, mental exhaustion.
- 20:36And when you start to realize that, you
- 20:40say, wait a minute, I have the power
- 20:42to control if I get overloaded.
- 20:46Yes, you do.
- 20:49Controlling your focus will prevent mental exhaustion, something
- 20:52people do not want to feel.
- 20:56Number 26, guys, stability improves output quality.
- 21:01Calm attention produces better results.
- 21:06I didn't say the best results.
- 21:08I said better results.
- 21:10And the more that we take something, the
- 21:12more that we refine it, the more that
- 21:13it gets better, better, better, better, better, better,
- 21:16better, and better.
- 21:19That's an important one.
- 21:20Number 27, focus strengthens control.
- 21:25You gain more command over your actions.
- 21:31But people think they can just harness the
- 21:33wheel overnight and become a marksman, a top
- 21:38skipper, right?
- 21:40A pilot overnight.
- 21:43This domain is new to people.
- 21:46You can't expect to just learn it in
- 21:47a fraction.
- 21:50You've got to be humble and you got
- 21:53to be willing to learn.
- 21:54That's something that a lot of people in
- 21:56this world are not because they have a
- 21:58very big ego up here.
- 22:00And they'd rather show that big ego and
- 22:05how they're so, well, falsely powerful, that they'll
- 22:09feed the ego before they feed their humility.
- 22:15Number 28, guys, execution becomes smoother.
- 22:21Less mental resistance improves flow.
- 22:28When we go with the flow, things are
- 22:34easier.
- 22:37Things become more creative.
- 22:39They become more relaxed.
- 22:41They become more aligned.
- 22:46With our core values.
- 22:49Number 29, guys, attention defines performance.
- 22:58Let me say that again.
- 22:59Attention defines performance.
- 23:08Attention defines performance.
- 23:10Maybe you've heard something like that before, but
- 23:13it really does.
- 23:15Your results, ladies and gentlemen, depend on your
- 23:18focus habits.
- 23:20So these are important things to understand, right?
- 23:26When we understand this, life changes.
- 23:32Life changes.
- 23:34And I say life changes because now you
- 23:37have this epiphany moment.
- 23:39You have this mental and physical awareness of
- 23:43where your body is at in proportion to
- 23:48life.
- 23:50A good way to define this to you
- 23:52is we talk about our body with proprioception,
- 23:55right?
- 23:55I close my eyes.
- 23:57Don't do this when you're driving.
- 23:58And I put my hand up here high
- 23:59in the sky.
- 24:00I close my eyes.
- 24:01I can tell my hand is up here.
- 24:03If I move my hand down to my
- 24:04waist, I can also tell my hand is
- 24:06at my waist.
- 24:06I can tell by the proprioception.
- 24:08I can tell by that.
- 24:11And so the more that we get to
- 24:13understand our environment, the more that we get
- 24:18to understand our output and how we can
- 24:20be kind to ourself to alter or change
- 24:23that output, the more that we actually do
- 24:25change the output.
- 24:33That's important to know.
- 24:36Very, very important to know.
- 24:40Very, very important to know.
- 24:41And when you know that, life changes.
- 24:49Life changes.
- 24:55Life changes.
- 24:59Number 30, guys.
- 25:01Focus is the foundation of execution.
- 25:06But I don't want you to think that
- 25:07you need to focus so hard you get
- 25:09a headache.
- 25:09Focusing that hard is just going to get
- 25:11you frustrated.
- 25:13And it's going to get you to be
- 25:15less confident.
- 25:17It's going to get you fearful, which is
- 25:19not what you want.
- 25:22You want to build your confidence.
- 25:30Build your confidence.
- 25:38Build your confidence, okay?
- 25:43Build your confidence.
- 25:48Build your confidence.
- 25:49And so everything, ladies and gentlemen, you achieve
- 25:57starts there.
- 25:59It starts from the confidence that you built.
- 26:02Now, when you do something and you have,
- 26:08let's say, a feeling that you've done it
- 26:10right, the dopamine releases in your body.
- 26:15And it's like, okay, anchors it.
- 26:17Yes, I've done it right now.
- 26:19I could do better next time.
- 26:20Right?
- 26:21I could do it better next time.
- 26:25That's important.
- 26:27So ladies and gentlemen, execution is not random.
- 26:31It is a direct reflection of the attention
- 26:33quality you put forth.
- 26:35When focus improves, performance does automatically.
- 26:45So all I'm asking you to do is
- 26:47to gently focus on what you want.
- 26:50And by you doing this over and over
- 26:52and over again, you will see that your
- 26:55performance will go up.
- 26:57But the problem is too many people are
- 26:59worrying about lunch, worrying about dinner, worrying about
- 27:025 million things, and they're not focusing on
- 27:03one thing.
- 27:07Then they wonder why their life is just
- 27:08fading away.
- 27:09It's because they're not becoming intentional with their
- 27:11moments.
- 27:14They're not becoming intentional.
- 27:18You don't need to work harder.
- 27:19You don't need to do more.
- 27:22You need to be intentional with the moments
- 27:23that you have in your life.
- 27:26Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.
