- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06Movie Talks show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it at length.
- 0:19This week we've got Coming Off of My Shelf 1978's Jaws 2, or as
- 0:25the French call it, Jaws Dozier Partis.
- 0:29You want to know why? It's a funny story on the DVD
- 0:34where the director is Jeanette Schwar.
- 0:37French. French man and he references the
- 0:42fact that the original Jaws was called in French les Don de la
- 0:46Mer. Checks out, I mean.
- 0:49Teeth of the sea. Teeth of the Sea.
- 0:50Absolutely. And then he said.
- 0:52But in France, if you're going to have Part 2, it would be laid
- 0:57down to le Mer de. And he says that metal de is
- 1:02shit. Yeah, so he says.
- 1:03I had to. We had to change the name.
- 1:04Ironically, it's still shit. Wow.
- 1:07Coming in hot. Just kidding, just kidding, just
- 1:09kidding, David. Here we are, back on the couch
- 1:12once again back at Amity Island, celebrating the 4th of July
- 1:16absolutely with Mayor Vaughn. None of a very creative name for
- 1:20a holiday. 4th of July. Yeah, there's a comedian who did
- 1:23a bit on it. OK, Like you have like Canada
- 1:25Day sure. And they just don't have a name
- 1:28for it. It's.
- 1:28Independence Day. Actually, it is.
- 1:29That's. True.
- 1:30Yeah, what a. Comedian.
- 1:32A very good comedian. Yeah.
- 1:34They made a whole movie, actually.
- 1:35Never exactly ID 4. Absolutely.
- 1:38Jeff Goldblum. That's right.
- 1:39Two of them, actually. They made two of those movies.
- 1:40Yeah. Roland Emmerich.
- 1:42So here we are, David, once again visiting the beach.
- 1:45You're you're beach guy. I was at the beach last weekend.
- 1:49Wonderful. There's a nice little beach,
- 1:51Lemmy, Lemmy. It's on the Gatineau side.
- 1:54Of course, it's not terribly busy, OK?
- 1:57And I don't love it like I don't love.
- 2:00I'm not a, I'm not a beach guy. No, you're not.
- 2:02But I didn't mind it. And my wife brought a waste
- 2:04weight. OK.
- 2:05And she's like, put it on. I was like, well, I don't, I
- 2:07know how to swim. So she put it around your neck?
- 2:10Yeah. Tighter.
- 2:11Yeah. So we both know how to tread
- 2:13water. So there's no water safety
- 2:15general issues there, but I put it on and I just can lay on my
- 2:19back now. Oh yes, and just look up and
- 2:21just float. Oh yeah, my favorite.
- 2:22With no effort when I was at when I had a pool, I used to
- 2:26love that. Oh yeah.
- 2:26Then yeah. Ears underwater.
- 2:28So you're like completely turned out exactly.
- 2:30Just floating around. Oh yeah.
- 2:31Magical. So I did that for a better part
- 2:33of an hour. Magical.
- 2:34It was nice, Yeah. You know, your limbs and nice to
- 2:36see. Yeah.
- 2:39Here we are. It's Jaws two.
- 2:40We are here coming off the shelf.
- 2:42What are your initial thoughts on this?
- 2:45And as you're answering that question, let me ask another
- 2:49you. Want me to answer the same time?
- 2:51Yes, hope the whole thing about what your thoughts are.
- 2:55I want to know your history with Jaws.
- 2:58We've talked about it's on the it's in the archives, but I
- 3:00wonder how you feel about the sequel kind of in general.
- 3:04We talked a lot about sequels. This is where we've been through
- 3:06a phase. We have Jaws is just following
- 3:09the lines of diehards and Rockies and even Bonds.
- 3:12Yes. So I'm wondering at the end of
- 3:14Jaws, were you thinking I need another one of these or even I
- 3:18want another one of the Halloween factor?
- 3:20The Halloween factor my OG with with Casino Royale was I didn't
- 3:26know that was a sequel necessarily, but I was like, I
- 3:28want another one of these movies.
- 3:29You were horny. Where are you at with not only
- 3:33this? Let's get into the specifics of
- 3:34this movie later, but for now, did you think there was a reason
- 3:38for two if you after watching Jaws?
- 3:40That takes us back. Hey, we did Jaws early on in her
- 3:43career, her maybe season 1 even. Great episode.
- 3:46Great episode. Arguably a good movie, another
- 3:48movie like Rocky. Perfect.
- 3:50That I was really late to the game.
- 3:52Really late. Disappointingly so.
- 3:54It does take away from the enjoyment of it because of the
- 3:58course of time that's it's unavoidable.
- 4:00It's unavoidable. I voted pretty good.
- 4:03You saw it when it came, like way back.
- 4:05I saw it in 1990. Yeah, that's way back, buddy.
- 4:09It's a long time ago. Sure, 35 years.
- 4:11Ago, sure, but I know people that have seen it more recently.
- 4:14So I just mean like I've watched the first time I watched Days of
- 4:18Wine and Roses was not that long, you know, ago That's true.
- 4:21And that was a movie that's much older than that, so.
- 4:24And better than this? They're OK.
- 4:26There it is, gauntlets down. Anyway, So what are your
- 4:29thoughts just generally on on where we're at into this movie
- 4:32to begin with? I'm trying to think when I watch
- 4:35Jaws originally, did I have a hankering knowing there's a Jaws
- 4:39too? Do I want to go ahead and watch
- 4:41it like that day? Next day I'm going to say no.
- 4:44Let's pretend that you didn't know there was a Jaws too.
- 4:47I'll put you back in 75 thinking, where am I at?
- 4:50Like, OK, I just saw this movie. Whatever.
- 4:52Like it, love it. Whatever, hate it, but are you
- 4:55racing in three years later to go see just two?
- 4:58It made a lot of money, sure, we know that.
- 4:59So a sequel is probably coming. But you don't know yet.
- 5:03Now my answer has changed. Yes, only because you
- 5:07instinctively want to do it, just because of the nostalgia,
- 5:11just because you want more of something that was good.
- 5:14So definitely not in the same sense as Halloween.
- 5:17So. Continuation.
- 5:19It's strictly, strictly business.
- 5:21That's it. That makes sense.
- 5:23Like I'm not like, oh man, there's so much potential, all
- 5:26they can do so many different things.
- 5:28I. Want more Brody in my life?
- 5:29Exactly. More Hooper in my life or
- 5:31anything like that? Not really.
- 5:32Not in that case. This is this is a business
- 5:34decision that I would go see it based on the fact that you go
- 5:38see. Sequels, That's what we do,
- 5:39right? Sure.
- 5:39That's why they happen every year all the time, right?
- 5:41Why we're doing it? 7th Jurassic Park movie that
- 5:43just came out in theaters. Yeah, which I've heard is not
- 5:45bad. Yeah, sure.
- 5:46People like yeah, but again, people go whether it's good or
- 5:49bad, it doesn't matter. It's just like, I like Jurassic
- 5:50Park 30 years ago, I'm going back.
- 5:52I like Scarlett Johansson now. Sure, that's another good
- 5:57reason. As far as I'm concerned, for
- 5:58sure she's no lower Lorraine Gary, but she'll do in a pinch.
- 6:03Who? Lorraine, Gary, Just.
- 6:06Not those Lorraine Gray really looks like.
- 6:09See what I did there? The G and the R and the A and
- 6:11the and the Y. But why?
- 6:13Why I brought off Die Hard 5 in good faith.
- 6:18I figured I have to do it because of the Rocky.
- 6:21Sure, keep up. This feels retaliatory unless
- 6:27you're only out is if it's an anniversary.
- 6:31This movie is done an anniversary specifically.
- 6:33However, if you recall, this was on the list given in January, so
- 6:37this isn't retaliatory. OK.
- 6:39This is you said that word better than I could.
- 6:42This is a choice, however, because Jaws is on my brain.
- 6:46It's the 50th anniversary of Jaws.
- 6:47It's coming back to theaters at the end of August in IMAX.
- 6:50You're invited and they just premiered the documentary Jaws.
- 6:57I noticed that in the IMDb. Yeah, so it's in the
- 6:59conversation again, all right. And I love the Jaws ride and I
- 7:04watch a lot of YouTube videos and get excited, so it's just
- 7:06always in my sphere, OK? So I was happy to revisit it.
- 7:09And truth be told, it's a bit like Halloween too to me.
- 7:12Which is to say, I don't remember liking it very much.
- 7:15OK, well, I'm just happy that it wasn't a revenge decision.
- 7:19Oh, no, no. No, I'm not going to say this is
- 7:21a bad movie for two reasons. It's one the first one one,
- 7:26you're right, you're right it's not, and secondly, it's already
- 7:28been set by many other people. Similar to Die Hard 5, it took
- 7:33me a while to scroll through the user reviews to find a 10 out of
- 7:3710. Oh yeah.
- 7:39Probably the same time distance it took to find the 10 out of 10
- 7:43for Die Hard. Five, the amount of sweeps.
- 7:45It took because even the worst movies we've done, it doesn't
- 7:49take me long to find the 10 out of 10.
- 7:51No, there's always some. Sucker out there pretty quick,
- 7:53but there are these last two movies I had to dig.
- 7:56I had to go down for a while. Couple eights, couple nines,
- 8:00lots of ones, lots of twos, lots of fives and sixes.
- 8:02Anyways, just a fun little note Phillip.
- 8:04That is pretty fun and it's true.
- 8:08I will give you a little taste, old faithful.
- 8:11Oh, yes, please do get too deep in this episode.
- 8:14Of course, we have here Police Chief Brody must protect the
- 8:18citizens of Amity after a second monster shark begins terrorizing
- 8:22the waters. If there it is.
- 8:25If you remove one word out of that second, you have JAWS, the
- 8:31original. You're not wrong.
- 8:32Just saying. Yeah, totally.
- 8:34Just saying. I'm not, you know.
- 8:36No, I think that that's fair. I think that's a fair criticism
- 8:38of the movie. It wants to be Jaws again, but
- 8:43it loses too many of the elements that made Jaws great.
- 8:47Spielberg would be 1. Of those is a huge 1.
- 8:50Robert Shaw obviously couldn't come back because he's been
- 8:53devoured, but Hooper, Dreyfus, Dreyfus coming back, Those are
- 8:57three. They couldn't get them, eh?
- 8:59Huge components. Damn shame.
- 9:01To what makes Jaws Jaws. Yeah, because they brought back
- 9:04the writers Carl Gottlieb and Sackler, who did a draft, and
- 9:07Gottlieb wrote the screenplay and was on set.
- 9:10So. Johnny Williams.
- 9:11Johnny Williams. John Williams coming back for
- 9:13the score. I mean, point Xanic and Brown
- 9:16producing again. So there's elements that they're
- 9:17like, hey, let's get the band back together.
- 9:19But if you're missing those three things, to me your movie
- 9:23is lesser. But the score, I want to say, I
- 9:26don't think it's lesser. I think it's actually a pretty
- 9:28good score. Wait, you're not talking about
- 9:29the IMDb score are you? No.
- 9:30No, no, no, no. The musical score, Yeah.
- 9:33No, it's. Williams like obviously deep is
- 9:36something very good, but I think he takes the best parts and
- 9:39makes new stuff and there's a sequence when they're diving and
- 9:44they find the orca. There's a little slight musical
- 9:46refrain from the original just to sort of little Easter eggs,
- 9:50if you will, that's very subtle, but I thought really, really
- 9:52effective. One of the ideas, one of the
- 9:54concepts are thrown out. There were a couple of different
- 9:56ones thrown around. 1 was tell the story of the Indianapolis
- 10:01that the quint story from the first movie go back and tell a
- 10:05prequel of. It's not really a prequel.
- 10:07It's got nothing to do with the amity.
- 10:08It's specific to it's a shark attack.
- 10:10It happened and there was some talk around that.
- 10:14There was also some talk around focusing the story more on Amity
- 10:20at large and talking about how the effects of the shark attacks
- 10:25in the first one, how it crushes the community.
- 10:28Of course, mob kind of increases, which is elements
- 10:30from the original book that they never touched on in the first
- 10:32one. Kind of coming into the second
- 10:34town is sort of really shook by the events and how they're
- 10:38trying to rebuild their communities and stuff like that.
- 10:41John D Hancock was originally directing it, couldn't find
- 10:44apparently the story is had trouble with the action
- 10:47sequences and was focusing a little bit more on darker kind
- 10:50of material, and ultimately was rejected in favor of basically
- 10:55the rehash that we get. The figure, that's what they
- 10:57want. I mean, at the time was the
- 10:58highest grossing sequel. I think until Rocky 2 came out
- 11:01the following year, sequels were still relatively new.
- 11:05We had Godfather 2IN part in 74, but it's not what it is now.
- 11:08It wasn't the industry. So I think people were true.
- 11:10Yeah, and even. Still hope.
- 11:12Back then, that's right. So it's interesting when they're
- 11:14like, I don't know, what do we do for a sequel?
- 11:16I guess the default is more of the same.
- 11:18Sometimes that works. The problem with going back to
- 11:20these old movies that I haven't seen, yeah, as sequels sure is.
- 11:24We know what we know about sequels now.
- 11:26Yeah, yeah, I know. It's not going to be that good.
- 11:29Or is it going to be one of those?
- 11:31Exceptions to the rule. Yeah, they do exist, absolutely.
- 11:34They do exist, totally. 1980, for example, with Empire
- 11:38Strikes. That's right.
- 11:39But we just talked to me and maybe not as good as the
- 11:41original, but we talked about good sequels.
- 11:43Rocky, Five and six are all intensive purposes.
- 11:45Good sequels to definitely serviceable.
- 11:47They're not the same movie rehash necessarily, but they
- 11:50are, you know, 30 years later, still delivering something
- 11:54different and good so it can be done.
- 11:56It can be done. Did they do it?
- 11:58That's the question. I think it's a bit of The Force
- 12:00Awakens where they played a little safe by not going with
- 12:03those other options to give us sort of safe as a weird word to
- 12:08use in a, you know, a shark movie.
- 12:11But that seems to be what they decided to to go on, for better
- 12:13or for worse. Yeah, it's pretty straight
- 12:15ahead. They do change the POV a little
- 12:17bit more obviously, but generally speaking, we're
- 12:20getting a pretty straight ahead, yeah.
- 12:22It's a lot of the same beats, a lot of the false alarms are
- 12:26similar, a lot of the red herrings are similar, a lot of
- 12:28so I would say this movie is predictable, but not to the
- 12:32point where I'm out. That's good.
- 12:34I mean, ultimately we kind of get not too dissimilarly as
- 12:39you're saying with Chrissy at the beginning of the first
- 12:41movie, we have the scuba divers basically searching through the
- 12:45scuba, the orca and they don't make it.
- 12:49No, they do not. No, I thought it was pretty
- 12:50effective scene. Now, generally we'll get to the
- 12:52kill specifically because that's obviously what this movie kind
- 12:54of turns into, whereas Jaws 1 isn't really all that concerned
- 12:58with that. And that's the Spielberg
- 13:00difference. And that's just sort of times
- 13:02changing so forth. What are your thoughts on this
- 13:06sort of introductory kind of moment for the story?
- 13:09Like how engaged are you in this first bit?
- 13:12It does what sequels do. They did it in Jurassic Park 3.
- 13:15It's just one that's in the top of my head.
- 13:17They have a quick early scene and get an early kill.
- 13:21Jurassic Park 2 does the same little girl on the island.
- 13:24It's a great. Scene that's true exactly I
- 13:25don't know why I jumped ahead to the third one.
- 13:27I don't know maybe because of the the gliding because that
- 13:29that was in this movie. So maybe.
- 13:30Sure, there you go. Could be, but anyway.
- 13:32But it is a it is trope. Sure, connective tissue there.
- 13:34So that's felt very sequally, but I didn't mind it.
- 13:39I thought it was shot well. Like, I don't, I don't, I don't
- 13:42see a lot of underwater scenes. I don't, I haven't watched the
- 13:45Abyss for a long time or 98% of it's probably underwater.
- 13:50So I think it was like, oh Jesus.
- 13:52Yeah, the only thing that I that stuck out to me about this first
- 13:54part was the the fact that it appears as though the shark is
- 13:58hiding, but the way the camera is hiding behind some of the
- 14:02seaweed. It's a smart.
- 14:03Shark. And then the shark kind of comes
- 14:05out of nowhere and eats the guy. There's a little bit of
- 14:07thinking, can they do that? They can't really do that.
- 14:11Maybe. Get it by mistake.
- 14:12They didn't realize what I was doing.
- 14:15I do have issues generally around the actions of the shark.
- 14:19I was going to let the first one slide because I was going to
- 14:22really gripe about it later. But that's that's an interesting
- 14:25point. But overall, it's just a quick
- 14:27little intro just to get the the ball rolling.
- 14:29But the ball doesn't really start rolling until you get
- 14:33Brody going to a ball or a or a banquet.
- 14:37A gala? A store?
- 14:38Yeah, a gala. And I actually want to ask you,
- 14:40have you ever really been to a big banquet?
- 14:43I went no, never once. I'm a gala guy.
- 14:48No, I've been like a hockey banquet.
- 14:50Oh, I've been some, certainly. Though so you have.
- 14:53Been it doesn't really count when you're 9.
- 14:56Things don't count when you're dressed up.
- 14:59But we we get our main character now.
- 15:01A lot of sequels completely have a new crew.
- 15:04Yep. Now obviously we know him.
- 15:06Hooper good and obviously Shaw, but we do get Roy Schneider.
- 15:12Stop right away. Let's just nip that right in the
- 15:15bud. That was retaliatory.
- 15:17Yes, Roy Schneider. We do get him, and we get him in
- 15:21the classic police Jeep. That's right, the Bronco.
- 15:25We almost didn't get him. He did not want to be in this
- 15:28movie. I don't that makes sense.
- 15:31He was making the Deer Hunter okay, best picture winner yes, I
- 15:35believe that's one of Pacino. He almost almost had 50 for
- 15:39walking. He was making that movie or was
- 15:43about to make that movie and didn't like the creative
- 15:46direction of Deer Hunter of Deer Hunter.
- 15:49So he backed out and contractually, Universal said,
- 15:53hey, we have a three picture deal with you.
- 15:55You're dropping out of one. This is a the kid type of.
- 15:58Situation, Bruce. Situation.
- 16:00And they say, OK, you know what, we'll release you.
- 16:02But you have to do JAWS too now. I can feel that he didn't really
- 16:05want to be there. You.
- 16:06Kind of get that vibe. Yeah, it makes sense.
- 16:07I usually love this actor like Rochelle, of course, guys, I
- 16:10don't like him in the myth, the fingerprints in this movie.
- 16:13But there's a couple of moments where I think he's in the movie.
- 16:16But generally he's a Bruce Willis esque husk of a man.
- 16:20Really. I'm not sure if you caught up on
- 16:22that. But anyway.
- 16:22But yes, he's back in business here in this movie, OK?
- 16:25Well, that's that's quite a big shot too to start off.
- 16:29Oh, I'm glad you picked up on that.
- 16:30Well, I mean, it seemed like the camera didn't change for a
- 16:32while. Yeah, Yeah.
- 16:33And we got and we got through into another pool.
- 16:37Yes. Which was not in Chernobyl.
- 16:39Was. Was actual they saw they saw it
- 16:41the whole time. It wasn't rainwater.
- 16:43Yes, yeah, no, it's a it's a it's a really beautiful.
- 16:46You know, this movie is much malign included by me for its
- 16:50kind of lack of style. And it's partly because
- 16:52Spielberg is so talented. I wouldn't go that far.
- 16:55And even at that young age, like his blocking, his staging is
- 16:57like perfection. He had a vision.
- 16:59And this guy's Janay Jano is not somebody that went on to do.
- 17:05I mean he directed Supergirl and a couple of other.
- 17:07Things God has a bad movie. It's not good.
- 17:10So not like a, oh, this is a, you know, a real auteur, but
- 17:14there's certain elements of this movie I think are really, really
- 17:16good. And I thought the filmmaking in
- 17:18this particular scene, as you're saying, is following him in
- 17:21through the banquet up over the, you know, the band feeling.
- 17:25All of that I thought, was really effective in a way that I
- 17:29don't give this movie credit for being often.
- 17:31I've locked in I'm. I am in.
- 17:33I've never been so in. I'm in the ocean.
- 17:37Well, I respect the hell out of that.
- 17:38And I'm also very excited to have another character named
- 17:42Tina. Oh yes, absolutely.
- 17:44Unfortunately, she falls really short.
- 17:47Oh yeah, of the performance I got at Halloween 5.
- 17:51Yeah, she's not dancing around, just speaking gibberish.
- 17:53I. Love that Tina.
- 17:54God, she sucked. I thought about her the other
- 17:56day. Oh gosh, that's a different
- 17:58podcast, folks. You know what I would say about
- 18:03Tina and Halloween 5 is she's a fantastic lady.
- 18:07Yeah. Is that what?
- 18:09Is that what Stefano? Says Stefano from Days of Our
- 18:12Lives has a little smarm to him. Yeah, he had a long run on that
- 18:15show. Yes, he did.
- 18:16Died in 20/16/29. No, he died nevermind 99 years
- 18:21ago. He is absolutely fantastic and I
- 18:24recognized him instantly as being on my third favorite soap
- 18:28opera. Yeah, that was my my show for a
- 18:30while. But yeah, he's he's great.
- 18:31But it's also like they're trying to, if you, I think we
- 18:34talked about this in the Jaws episode in the book, Hooper and
- 18:37Ellen have this affair. They used to go to school
- 18:39together. He was a well to do and she was
- 18:41in the same and she end up having an affair with him.
- 18:44I didn't know that in the book. And it feels like they've taken
- 18:47some of that element and moved it out.
- 18:50Oh, we'll just put it with this guy.
- 18:51Not that they're having an affair, but some, there's some
- 18:54Stephanos that type. They'll do it 100% of this.
- 18:56He ain't above it. Yeah, he ain't above it.
- 18:58It's a questionable moment. Now we have the introduction as
- 19:02well of Keith Gordon, who's really the only kid in this
- 19:05movie that I recognize, and I only recognize him because he
- 19:08later became a film director. He directed a movie I love
- 19:10called Waking the Dead. He was in Christine.
- 19:13Oh, that's great. So he's an actor that and a
- 19:17director that. It sort of continued onward, but
- 19:20I don't really recognize any of these kids in this movie,
- 19:22including Tina. I didn't either.
- 19:26I'd hoped I would, you know, if there was somebody there to
- 19:29recognize, you know, I'm on it. Yes, absolutely.
- 19:31I. Assume you.
- 19:31Trust me to take care of this 100% and you're right, there's
- 19:36nobody, not really that stands out.
- 19:38They may have done other things, but not they would have fizzled
- 19:40out by the time I came to be around.
- 19:43None of them did MacGyver or Seinfeld.
- 19:45That's basically that. I can tell you.
- 19:47Yes. That might not be true.
- 19:49Actually, if I dug, you might. There's probably somebody that
- 19:52was in MacGyver. Fair.
- 19:53Yeah. I like the little call back when
- 19:56she and Brody are dancing. This, we're still in this ball.
- 19:59I don't really know what's happening.
- 20:00The plot is still like kind of waiting to be unfolded.
- 20:02That's OK. It's probably very similar to
- 20:04the first one. Yeah, but the first one has
- 20:06going for it is character. I don't find this movie has any
- 20:11real character and originality. Yeah.
- 20:13So the characters are there. Sure, there's kids, whatever,
- 20:15but they're interchangeable. I don't care.
- 20:17Gary, like Ellen, has a job, but we don't really know what it is.
- 20:20Catering. Yeah.
- 20:22Something some sort of assistance, maybe some sort
- 20:25Larry's there. She's like, hey, you're still
- 20:27selling a piece of the dream. You're like, OK, I guess that's
- 20:29what she's doing. Larry's still the mayor.
- 20:31You know, Larry has a son. Yes.
- 20:33He. Does Larry Junior?
- 20:34Yeah, yeah. What are your thoughts around
- 20:35the junior thing? Jack, would you having Phil
- 20:41Junior? No, no, not really had an
- 20:42interest. I don't know what the mentality
- 20:43is behind it. Nothing wrong with it, I'm just
- 20:45curious. Ego.
- 20:47Is it legacy maybe you know George Foreman.
- 20:51The grill famously had five sons, and they are all named
- 20:56George. Really.
- 20:57Yeah, that's something. Yeah. 5 George Foreman's and a
- 21:00grill. And a grill to boot.
- 21:02I had that grill. Oh, yeah, yeah, me too.
- 21:04Wasn't bad. That's fine.
- 21:05Little dry. OK, you know, you're supposed to
- 21:07be a Hulk Hogan grill, but he couldn't get the licensing.
- 21:11Vince McMahon wouldn't let it, so it became a George Foreman
- 21:14grill. Little tidbit of information
- 21:16there. We'll see if that stays in.
- 21:20But I like the little callback. We've already seen a couple of
- 21:22these little bits. She whispers to Shider.
- 21:25Want to fool around. And then if you remember at the
- 21:28during the first movie, want to get drunk and fool around, He's
- 21:30like, Oh yeah. So there is still some
- 21:32relationship there. They're.
- 21:33Still in love? But I don't really feel a lot of
- 21:37warmth as the movie goes on between them and Brody.
- 21:40ISM as a character doesn't really have a lot of warmth to
- 21:43him. I find him.
- 21:44He's. Been through some stuff.
- 21:45And I kind of allow a certain amount of that.
- 21:47But I think it to your point, I think it's also he doesn't want
- 21:50to be there a combination I like.
- 21:51He's not hiding it well and sometimes it works for the
- 21:54character and sometimes it's just an actor kind of phoning it
- 21:59in a little bit. The shark that we're about to
- 22:08see. Possibly related, We don't know.
- 22:11But what's interesting about it is the reveal.
- 22:14Yes, it's a little subtle. Yeah.
- 22:15We're looking at on the banquet, and then it's very quiet.
- 22:18Yeah. And we're seeing this boat from
- 22:19the scuba divers that were out looking at the orca they had.
- 22:22Oh, yeah. Right.
- 22:23So that boat is in the middle of the walk, and we just follow the
- 22:27anchor, basically to reveal this monstrous shadow going around.
- 22:31Huge. Bigger than the first one.
- 22:32I think they kind of allude to it.
- 22:34If you're going to make a sequel, you know you may as well
- 22:37go bigger. You may as well.
- 22:39Right. And this goes back to, again,
- 22:41one of the bigger critics of the style of this filmmaker in the
- 22:43movie in general. I think so.
- 22:45But in watching this time, I found myself really engaged with
- 22:50some of the shots and this one in particular.
- 22:52As I said, the reveal of the shadow I thought is pretty
- 22:55exciting and cool. And then they moved.
- 22:57And then watching the fin rise as the camera pans to reveal
- 23:03basically Amity Island and the island houses and businesses and
- 23:06such, there is this feeling of like, OK, like, this is scary
- 23:11and we know it's happening. And the anticipation, the dread
- 23:13of that, I thought was really effective.
- 23:15No issues here buddy. And one of the things this movie
- 23:17has is really one of the great tag lines ever committed to film
- 23:22and one of the worst. So one of the things when I
- 23:23watch that. Wow.
- 23:25OK that Finn pop up. It's got a great poster too, but
- 23:28the tagline in the trailer is 1. Good bite deserves another.
- 23:33Oh, that's good. That's a good.
- 23:34One right, that's terrible. But the real tagline that's I
- 23:37think phenomenal is just when you thought it was safe to go
- 23:40back in the water like that and, and you could use that and they
- 23:44have in different contexts over the years, but man, that's a
- 23:47great, great tagline. I imagine in real life it keeps
- 23:50a lot of people out of the water, and I often wonder if the
- 23:54sharks are aware that humans have made a movie out of them
- 23:59and have made us more scared than we should be of them.
- 24:03Sure, and that's not fair to them.
- 24:04We. Just want to play but.
- 24:05It's not fair. We we both know it.
- 24:07It's not fair. A lot of sharks have perished
- 24:10because of these movies. 100% I can't say factual because.
- 24:13I haven't. It is factual.
- 24:14Peter Benchley basically spent the rest of his career working
- 24:17to save sharks, despite the fact they wrote a book that like,
- 24:19kind of terrorized. Good for him trying to you know.
- 24:21Because he was like, Oh, shoot, the wrath that I, you know, hath
- 24:24brought. What do What do you think was
- 24:25going to happen you? Just read a story.
- 24:27It's done so well. They convinced us totally.
- 24:30Yeah, it's pretty impressive the impact that that had, for sure.
- 24:34And I also want to talk a little bit about the poster.
- 24:35If you remember the first movie, The poster is a woman, a lot of
- 24:40blue, swimming a lot of blue and then a shark underneath.
- 24:42Ready, basically to rise. Yes.
- 24:44Kind of like Nirvana. Never mind the.
- 24:46Sure. Similar.
- 24:47Yeah, very similar, minus the shark.
- 24:49Minus the shark and the dollar bill and the baby.
- 24:51Yeah, it is water I. Suppose it is blue.
- 24:55But anyway, so that is that iconic poster, the first one and
- 24:58then the second one. What do you do?
- 24:59You have the water skier and now the shark is above the water and
- 25:03it's taller than her. It's pretty intense photo.
- 25:05I love the marketing of these first couple of movies anyway.
- 25:08Well, they got to get you in the theater.
- 25:10And I think this shot I think is in the trailer.
- 25:12And I think like, again, I am excited when I see that shot.
- 25:15It gets me pumped up for the movie.
- 25:16So it's a good trailer. It's a good trailer.
- 25:17But even more than that, that shot in the trailer in the
- 25:20movie, at any point I am jacked up for what's happening next.
- 25:24It excites me that you're excited.
- 25:26What doesn't excite me very much is the fact that this movie
- 25:29seems to, at this point, be pivoting into teen movie
- 25:33territory like a horror movie. Almost like a horror movie, I
- 25:37suppose. A bunch of people we don't know.
- 25:40Don't know, don't care. No character, really.
- 25:43That's a problem, Phillip. That's a problem.
- 25:45It's kind of, but this is 78, so it's kind of before the big rise
- 25:49of the slasher film that they've been out there, but it's not yet
- 25:52that formula. So I think the choice is more of
- 25:56like American Graffiti, where the whole movie takes place and
- 26:01it's a bunch of teenagers doing a thing.
- 26:02Well, I haven't seen it take it easy.
- 26:06And this would be kind of tries to do the same now.
- 26:09What a surprise. One of the things that we like
- 26:11so much about Jaws One was the interplay between Dreyfus, Shaw
- 26:16and and Scheider. And thank you for calling it
- 26:18Jaws one just. Exactly.
- 26:19Just keep things consistent. This movie doesn't have that.
- 26:23We talked about not having the leads.
- 26:25You got to have the leads. You got the leads.
- 26:29If we know anything but the choice to pivot to young, what's
- 26:32your take on that? Are you engaged with any of
- 26:34these kids at all in this relationships?
- 26:36If some of them had bigger breaths, bigger breaths and not
- 26:40and not in my words. Tits of a Sparrow.
- 26:42That's not my words. That's one of the kids which I
- 26:45don't even know his name because I don't care.
- 26:46No, it's a it's a problem. It's a problem generally.
- 26:49Even Tina wasn't enough. The name couldn't.
- 26:52And yeah, teams only remembered because of Halloween 5.
- 26:55That's it. That has nothing to do with
- 26:57this. One that's it.
- 26:58So it is it is a struggle. You know me, I like to cheer for
- 27:02people. I need to emotionally connect to
- 27:04him. I want a little character
- 27:05building and outside of Brody, we don't get that from really
- 27:09any of the kids. Sean, maybe because he's.
- 27:13Smaller. Sure.
- 27:14And you know we're. A little more in peril.
- 27:17Yeah, and he actually, you know what?
- 27:18You don't like kid actors. You've said that generally not,
- 27:21but I think Sean does OK here. I think you're right.
- 27:24He doesn't have much to do, no. But when he has a moment, yeah,
- 27:28I think he definitely makes it in ways that his brother does
- 27:30not. No brothers, no good.
- 27:32Mike is his name. There are some moments later in
- 27:35the movie where I thought, OK, that's a good performance for a
- 27:37couple of minutes, well done. But but overall, I think it it
- 27:41hurts a little bit in a bit of a sore spot for me.
- 27:44And part of the reasons I think ultimately it's not as good as
- 27:48the original. Yeah, I think I'm far less
- 27:50engaged right away. There's no characters I can
- 27:53relate to. Don't worry, I'm going to come
- 27:55up with something off the shelf with a an award-winning
- 27:58supporting actor performance. Wow.
- 28:00Yeah, Gauntlets down. You have no idea.
- 28:03You're all but the gauntlet these days.
- 28:04I'm a gauntlet guy. Have you been playing the game?
- 28:07I never played it, but I know of it.
- 28:09Alright. I enjoy it.
- 28:11What I think is also enjoyable, what I think this movie does
- 28:14well and the first one succeeds at, but in somewhat different
- 28:19ways, is the red herring scare, right.
- 28:23There's no one better in the world than Spielberg in terms of
- 28:26staging, arguably, and set up so the scenes in which were
- 28:30redirected or misdirected to the scenes where we think
- 28:33something's going to happen and nothing happens.
- 28:35The way in which this movie sets up the kind of Hang Gliding and
- 28:42dropping in and out of the water, the musical swell we get,
- 28:46the underwater shot, all the elements that would have come.
- 28:48Is there a moment where any excitement or like kind of
- 28:51curiosity or you kind of rolling with these excitement?
- 28:54Glider Guy is as good as dead. I wrote it down.
- 28:58I can't deny that it's here. All right?
- 28:59I could have racipated it. But then I realized quickly
- 29:02after, I'm like, you idiot. No, that's clearly a
- 29:05misdirection, a red herring. It's not going to happen.
- 29:08This one, it's the next one. And this is sort of the
- 29:11beginning of like, OK, I know what we're doing with.
- 29:14Playing the movie. It's planning the beats of the
- 29:17not only the original, but just in general of knowing what's
- 29:20going to happen. So I did start to find this
- 29:23movie a little bit predictable, not to a point of a fault, yet
- 29:27the early stages. Yeah, I mean, I think that
- 29:29that's fair. Again, you're watching a shark
- 29:31movie, an attack movie, right? There's there's no elements.
- 29:34It's like watching a car chase in a Bond movie.
- 29:35You know, it's going to happen, just a matter of when.
- 29:37So I I can appreciate a certain level of that, but when it does
- 29:40happen, is it done well? Is it executed well right like?
- 29:44Filmatically, I think I get it shot well when he goes
- 29:46underneath the water. And that's the point.
- 29:48Yeah. It's it.
- 29:49It delivers that. Yeah, ultimately that's fair.
- 29:52Like, I mean, there's there's nothing else you can do.
- 29:54I'm just I'm just recognizing no for sure what what it is.
- 29:56So it stops you obviously from getting to a level of terror,
- 30:00yeah. Yes, but then we introduce the
- 30:05water skier and we also see Mr. Shark doesn't have a name yet,
- 30:11just the first. One didn't have a name.
- 30:13Either all we know is that they're cousins.
- 30:15That's that's what I read. That's what I read.
- 30:17I'm going to I'm going to stick with it.
- 30:19But unlike it's cousin, this one's a little bit faster.
- 30:22This one's it's been working out.
- 30:25I did look up some numbers, Phillip, because I felt the
- 30:29shark was moving too fast or they were filming the water
- 30:33skier too fast. One of the two.
- 30:37So I looked up the speed of a recreational water skier, 20 to
- 30:4240 mph. It's pretty fast.
- 30:46I initially look up and see that a shark only goes 19 kilometers
- 30:50an hour. I'm like, that's a problem.
- 30:53So I thought, OK, I'm out. I got up to stop the player, but
- 30:59I gave the Internet a second chance and this great white
- 31:04shark can get up to speeds of 56 kilometers an hour, which
- 31:10actually works out to roughly 30 mph, which is right in the sweet
- 31:15spot of that recreational skier. There it is.
- 31:18I'm back in, baby, I am back. I sat down.
- 31:22I was all ready to nitpick the shit out of that out of spite.
- 31:26No real reason, just reasonable, and I will say I actually quite
- 31:30enjoyed this sequence. OK, right to the demise of,
- 31:35well, more of the demise of the driver.
- 31:38I didn't care about the skier. She had a coming she's it wasn't
- 31:41actually a great person, apparently.
- 31:43Did it David Harbour for a while.
- 31:46She's one of her armed robberies around me.
- 31:50But introducing the fire element and adding that to the shark
- 31:54makeup scar, Yeah. But yeah, I thought that was a.
- 31:57That was a nice touch. And I thought, again, it was
- 31:58shot well. And I'm like.
- 31:59OK, that's, that's cool. I liked it.
- 32:01Flailing about with this canister of gasoline that could
- 32:04be problematic. It's a little odd.
- 32:06And then obviously the flare. So I like, I like where the
- 32:08instinct is where you're like, I'll course gas over the shark
- 32:12and I'll shoot with a flare. Problem solved.
- 32:13I mean. It works, doesn't go as well as
- 32:16it. Could right, but I agree, and
- 32:18this is something where my memory of this movie is I hated
- 32:21that that specific moment, just the idea that they scarred the
- 32:26shark to begin with. What it felt like was Tell me
- 32:29how the movie trope and I think when I watch this, I think of
- 32:32Jaws the original as not really a horror movie.
- 32:37When did Halloween come out 78? But.
- 32:42Flavor of the month. I guess, but it's so early.
- 32:44This movie may have come out in the summer and Halloween
- 32:46probably in the fall, so I don't know exactly where its origin
- 32:50necessarily is, but. You loved it this time.
- 32:52Did when I think of this movie I think of bad cheap knock off
- 32:57sequel. Which it is.
- 32:59Turning the shark into kind of like a slasher movie, right?
- 33:04Like hiding behind the seaweed and giving it a.
- 33:06Personality that it really should bring.
- 33:08The scarring that sort of, you know, I didn't really.
- 33:11Give it a mask. Yeah, a little bit like I just
- 33:13didn't really appreciate it, I guess.
- 33:15And when I watch it this time, I think that's pretty effective.
- 33:18The first movie, for all of its qualities and flaws, it doesn't
- 33:22have any flaws. It's it's not about the shark
- 33:26chasing and eating and doing the things right.
- 33:29It does terrorize, but it's not the same.
- 33:31The. Things.
- 33:32Exactly, And this is like you're watching it do the the killing,
- 33:37the hunting, the biting. The intentionality is there and
- 33:42I I didn't give it a lot of credit back in the day, but I
- 33:44really enjoy it this time. Good.
- 33:46And ultimately the. Boat blows up.
- 33:49Which makes sense because there's fuel and there's spark.
- 33:52Sure, that's enough for me. It's a lot of blow up, a lot of
- 33:56fire, but it's you get to see it from the island, which I kind of
- 33:59like. Yeah, Tina's scared.
- 34:00She is, rightfully so. Totally.
- 34:03Eddie's fine though. He's playing the guitar, He's
- 34:06chilling. We get 25 minutes later, Brody's
- 34:09out with his deputy trying to find out what's going on because
- 34:13these divers have disappeared. Yeah, yeah, there's a mystery.
- 34:16And they're dragging the lake and they find the the slow MO in
- 34:20the style of Die Hard 5. Yeah, this is a more moment and
- 34:23I think it's done better in Die Hard 5.
- 34:25Sure. I think this is kind of a silly
- 34:26slow MO movement, but it is an effort to say, hey, guys, pay
- 34:30attention. Like you don't have a shot that
- 34:33lasts for 10 seconds on this thing.
- 34:35Well, I'm just. Thinking this is electrical
- 34:36cable in the ocean and I'm like, oh, probably.
- 34:38I guess that makes sense. Yeah, totally.
- 34:40Anyway, that's an interesting little set up and pay off 25
- 34:44minutes into the movie. But what we do get, more
- 34:47interestingly I suppose if we're talking about plot movement, is
- 34:52we have now a first hand account, it's 30 minutes into
- 34:54the movie and we have the dead killer whale.
- 34:58Yes, this woman in this moment is awesome.
- 35:02You like her. She is just, I don't know, she
- 35:05fits this. Role, She's perfect.
- 35:07Scientist, yes. Nothing.
- 35:08No personality. Nothing.
- 35:10Exactly. That's what a scientist has no
- 35:11personality. I'm just kidding.
- 35:13For any scientists listening, no, she's not very good.
- 35:16I'm just. Gonna She just sort of Mumbles
- 35:18her way through it. It's like deadpan.
- 35:20Yeah, maybe it's a joke because she is a scientist.
- 35:22I don't know, maybe. But what I think is interesting
- 35:25is a we've got Brody seeing first hand what's familiar,
- 35:30let's say. He's kind of jumping the gun a
- 35:33little bit, though. I mean, I don't blame him
- 35:34because of his experiences. Let's be clear about that Yes,
- 35:37he's looking for proof that there's a shark.
- 35:39That's right, because he's. Terrified of him.
- 35:42He's seen, you know, he's gone through.
- 35:44Hell yeah, he's a little sumptuous because of his
- 35:46experiences. I think so, but again, you're
- 35:49looking at a killer whale and he says it's so succinctly, it's
- 35:52obvious a big fish took a bite out of this big fish.
- 35:55Like this is a huge bite. Exactly.
- 35:57Oh, no, couldn't be, no, could be a boat.
- 36:01Anyway, it's funny to me. But we do get an interesting bit
- 36:04of, and this sort of falls under the retcon paradigm, if you
- 36:09will, I will, where we have new information.
- 36:12Brody tells us what we knew from the first movie, which is
- 36:15splashing around, attracts the irregular movement, attracts the
- 36:19sharks. And then she says and sound.
- 36:22And he says, what? And she's like, oh, yeah, sound.
- 36:26They can like Sonar. Of course, everyone knows that.
- 36:29Maybe not in 78 exactly. And then it says sharks don't
- 36:33take it things personally. Which, Oh yeah, big line.
- 36:37Huge Line comes into play a little bit later in the series.
- 36:40Spoiler alert, but given that you think that they're related.
- 36:45Yeah, plays right into my my narrative.
- 36:47Your theory? Absolutely.
- 36:48My theory, yeah. That they are, at the very
- 36:50least. Cousins, sure, but if they're
- 36:51cousins they don't take it personally.
- 36:53So you killed my cousin? I don't care.
- 36:54Depends where you're from. That's fair, but it's 30 minutes
- 36:57into a 2 hour movie. You were kind of getting the
- 37:00seeds of, OK, here's some sort of conflict, Brody's going to
- 37:03fight against whatever that thing is, and no one's going to
- 37:08believe him, perhaps. That rings a bell.
- 37:10Exactly now what? What do you think might convince
- 37:13them? If the orca doesn't do it, what
- 37:15else might you need? I would maybe upgrade from Orca
- 37:19to human body. Interesting.
- 37:21Just. Saying, I think that's the next
- 37:23step. Like at a carnival, you trade in
- 37:25yeah the the orca to get a bigger prize for the bigger
- 37:29prize. Yeah, I wouldn't do that.
- 37:30No. But people would absolutely.
- 37:33I was wondering when he sees that thing in the water, the
- 37:37board, why isn't it getting pushed more in because of the
- 37:41current? So I thought this is dumb and I
- 37:44was very close getting up storming out like like it's the
- 37:50Oscars at those places 2006 it crashed just one but it made
- 37:56more sense that there was a a dead body attached to it.
- 37:58It would wait. There's.
- 37:59Also an undertow. I don't know the logistics.
- 38:02Right, nothing. Just I don't know how Water
- 38:04Works. I just drink it, not enough of
- 38:05it, but I drink it not salt water.
- 38:08I think it wants us to think that the shark is around and
- 38:13he's going into the water. He's a little little hesitant,
- 38:16rightfully so. Were you scared?
- 38:18No. No, because.
- 38:18It's kind of a jump scare moment.
- 38:20It's that one big musical sting thing comes at him.
- 38:23I mean, that's a moment to be scared.
- 38:25I get jumped. I found this movie above average
- 38:28when it came to predictability. OK, I did.
- 38:30So you knew it was coming. You just didn't know when it was
- 38:32coming exactly. So when it did, it didn't matter
- 38:34exactly. Yeah, it's OK.
- 38:35What I didn't see coming, David, is poisoned bullets.
- 38:39If this is what you're seeing, and we have brodies whose
- 38:43experience in the first movie was shooting the shark and
- 38:48having no effect, at least with his handgun upgrade and Hooper
- 38:53wanting his needle to stick it in to poison the shark.
- 38:58Why is this his approach do you think?
- 39:01Putting sodium cyanide, which I noticed you had some in your
- 39:04medicine cabinets. Yeah, that's for later.
- 39:06That's that's for insurance purposes.
- 39:09Yeah, putting it in the tips of the bullet and then putting a
- 39:12little. Wax seal it in seal.
- 39:14It in now he did miss the wax yes.
- 39:17Did you notice that Yeah. On the third one Tough to work
- 39:19with that he didn't go back to that one and redo it.
- 39:22I'm just saying they could have reshot that yeah, just lazy.
- 39:25Lazy. Probably you.
- 39:26You have it. I'm leaving.
- 39:28Yeah. I got, I got somewhere to be.
- 39:30Yeah, I don't know. I was like, OK.
- 39:33It strikes me as a strange choice.
- 39:35Yeah, I'm with. It especially since it doesn't
- 39:36really play into anything later. It's my favorite scene,
- 39:39actually. OK, well, there it is.
- 39:40What I found interesting was the nosiness.
- 39:43Oh yes, of. What's his face, Deputy Doo Dah?
- 39:49He just kept looking in his office like it's none of your
- 39:51business, man. Yeah, Brody's clearly trying to
- 39:54dissuade, right? Turn off the light.
- 39:56Covers it up. He turns it back on.
- 39:57And he turns it back on. Yeah.
- 39:59At that point. And you're fired.
- 40:01Yeah, Really. Seriously.
- 40:02That's a pink slip. Wow.
- 40:04I don't know. It's a small little annoyance
- 40:06with me. Like break off.
- 40:08That's management, folks. That's what it does to it turns
- 40:10a cold pink slip after one infraction, but he takes it home
- 40:14and it ends up in the sink in the bathroom.
- 40:16He's trying to hide it. Yeah, well, I don't know why.
- 40:19It's straight up. He hides it and then he invites
- 40:21not only is his wife in the bathroom, but then even invites
- 40:24Mike into the room. So it's sort of like I just,
- 40:27there's nothing about the bullets that make any sense.
- 40:30Now let's get back to the beach, if you don't mind.
- 40:32Phil, I know you like the. Beach.
- 40:34I'm a beach guy, unlike me. Absolutely.
- 40:36Did you know sea doos existed that far back?
- 40:38Yeah, they've been around for a long time.
- 40:39I. Thought it was like a late 80s.
- 40:43Well, it's popularized, I guess. They're probably like $50,000
- 40:47back. Then, and probably primitive in
- 40:49their technology. Also, did you notice the look of
- 40:53Brady's hair in that tower? Brody's hair.
- 40:56Yes, I've been thinking about Tom Brady a lot lately.
- 41:00What can I tell you, handsome man?
- 41:01I don't know, it just tousled. I don't know this.
- 41:05Is a probably reshoot maybe I guess wear my hair, I don't
- 41:08care. This.
- 41:08Is a little too slick for him. Yeah, that's fair.
- 41:11I don't like his look in this movie.
- 41:12I think he's too lean. I think he's too dark.
- 41:14Like, like so tanned. He's on the beach.
- 41:16All the time up in his. Tower I don't know, I I guess
- 41:19said Roy Schneider is one of my favorite actors and yet in this
- 41:22movie in my memory and now even like kind of confirmed, I don't
- 41:26think he's very good in this just feels out of place.
- 41:30And I don't think that that's because I knew that he didn't
- 41:32want to be there because you, you seem to think the same and
- 41:36you didn't do the research. I don't often do, but one thing
- 41:39I did know, it was time for a false alarm.
- 41:45You must feel the same way to a certain degree because it stood
- 41:47out like a like a sore thumb. Like, yeah, this is it 100%.
- 41:50It's less about the false alarm part and more about it was time
- 41:54for panic at the beach. Well, he looks like an idiot.
- 41:56Yes, it's embarrassing. Totally.
- 41:59He wastes all that sodium cyanide on the blue fish.
- 42:02What I think that they didn't do enough of, I suppose, is play
- 42:06into Brody's kind of descent into madness.
- 42:10I think there's the movie. If you're going to bring Brody
- 42:12back, I want to see some trauma and I think the movie is tap
- 42:16dancing on it. That's an interesting point.
- 42:19Right. Like he's gone a little Batty
- 42:21little bit and he's ready to jump at shark at any time.
- 42:24Doesn't matter. And he's not getting there.
- 42:27Whether it's performance writing, but the movie isn't
- 42:29that interested in it at all. Now this is something you love
- 42:39in movies I don't maybe not love, but you, you make note of
- 42:42it. The moments where you can't slam
- 42:46the phone. Yes.
- 42:48Because we don't have those phones anymore.
- 42:50The technology has changed. Yeah, we have the development of
- 42:54the film, yes, supplying us with some drama, some tension.
- 42:59What is under? As you're yes, yes, you get it.
- 43:05Did you see a shark in that picture?
- 43:07That's the question. I think it's.
- 43:09Or did you want to see a? Shark.
- 43:10I think it's justifiably vague. I I see it enough when Brody
- 43:15shows it, but I can also see it's dark.
- 43:18It's murky. Could be seaweed.
- 43:20And yeah, I mean, the eye is kind of a tell, but I think when
- 43:23I first saw the movie, probably when I was much younger and on
- 43:26like a 26 inch like square 4 by three TV version, I I don't know
- 43:32that I would have immediately clocked that well.
- 43:34Stefano didn't clock it. No, I don't tell you that much.
- 43:36And I think it's time to get Larry into the conversation.
- 43:40He's already gone to him once. Yeah, Marie Hamilton.
- 43:43And we're having exactly the same conversation.
- 43:46We had the first one where Larry doesn't want to take action.
- 43:49Yes. And people will die because of
- 43:51it, is what Brody said. Yeah.
- 43:53More or less happened before, right?
- 43:54This is 1 where Scheider to me gets to finally kind of engage
- 43:59because he is fighting with this group of people, right?
- 44:01And he's like this panel, you don't even see it.
- 44:04You don't want to see it. I don't want to go through this
- 44:06again. You know this is your.
- 44:07This is on you. He he delivers the scene like
- 44:10he's agitated and it's embarrassing when people go to
- 44:14discuss something. Yes.
- 44:16In another room. Yeah.
- 44:17And just leave you out there. You look so small, yeah.
- 44:21Which is obviously the point, yeah.
- 44:22And instead of siding with him saying, OK, this could be a
- 44:25shark, how about you're fired? Yeah, I mean, firing bullets on
- 44:28the beach probably not a great. Idea.
- 44:30Not a great idea. Keep your job, you know, Little
- 44:32career advice. That's a good point from Phil
- 44:34and Dave. If they're filled with cyanide.
- 44:36But what does Brody do when met with adversity?
- 44:40Drinks. Drinks.
- 44:41And what happens when you drink a little much?
- 44:45You're not up at the crack of dawn.
- 44:46No, no, no, no. But who is up at the crack of
- 44:49dawn? Because he's had a hankering to
- 44:50sail for a while now. Is your favorite actor, favorite
- 44:54character? Yeah, MM, the oldest, eldest
- 44:58son. He wants to go out.
- 45:02And what's Sean up to? Yeah, I mean, ultimately, like
- 45:06any good sibling, Sean's going to extort him to get what he
- 45:11wants. Realistic.
- 45:12Totally realistic. I'll tell mom.
- 45:13I mean, that's what we used to do all the time.
- 45:15Classic Sean's probably. Going to wish he stayed home
- 45:17though. At the end of the day, it's a
- 45:19bad call, but it's how it goes. Now we have a moment here where
- 45:24we finally get a reveal of the sort of new and improved battle
- 45:28armor. Shark scar tissue.
- 45:31Scar tissue. Now this is the sort of, let's
- 45:33say a pretty early hero shot of the shark.
- 45:36What are your thoughts on? It I would say it's one of the
- 45:39few things I felt was better than the original, and I use the
- 45:43term lightly. Sure, better.
- 45:45I I feel almost not right saying it because the first movie is.
- 45:49It's like revolutionary. Sure.
- 45:51You know that's three years later.
- 45:52Technology is a little different.
- 45:53But the look of the shark in a couple of scenes, specifically
- 45:56this one, I think, how does it? As it as it swims by, I thought.
- 46:01And and the shark looks better than I remember.
- 46:02And the shark is our hero because it's trying to eliminate
- 46:05all these annoying teenagers. So I'm.
- 46:07I'm really, I'm rooting. I'm rooting for the shark first
- 46:11of which, of course, is Eddie. Eddie Tina's better half is now
- 46:17actually in half. Yeah, he needs to swim.
- 46:21Faster, Yeah, let's talk about the kill generally speaking,
- 46:24right, Because we kind of did this.
- 46:25It's our approach in in the horror movie genre and this is
- 46:28kind of leaning more into that territory.
- 46:32What are your thoughts on the way this kind of plays out,
- 46:34generally speaking? Well, you, you know me, Phil.
- 46:37I don't watch horror movies for the kills.
- 46:40No, just the boobs. Just for the.
- 46:43Tinas just for the Tinas sure, but I I will say this kill comes
- 46:48in with a bronze. OK, not bad.
- 46:51So pretty good it's. It it medals.
- 46:55Yeah, it's on the podium. It's on the podium.
- 46:56My question to you is, did you think Tina in your original
- 46:59viewing was gonna get it as? Well, yeah, I probably just
- 47:02assumed because I had seen this probably after I was into horror
- 47:06genre slasher stuff anyway. So you're hoping I was?
- 47:10Yeah. But I love this kill.
- 47:12Are we talking gold or silver? There's no.
- 47:15The other one later does more for it.
- 47:17But I love. I know what you're talking
- 47:19about. I like anything that allows for
- 47:21variety. You know one of the challenges
- 47:23with horror movies and we'll talk about them later.
- 47:26And it's almost. Silly, but a variety of
- 47:29utensils, implementations. Jacuzzis.
- 47:32Yeah. So it's like Halloween, the
- 47:34first one. It's like, you know, butcher
- 47:36knife. Butcher.
- 47:36Knife. I'm a purist, buddy, you know.
- 47:38That, absolutely, and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 47:40But if you you can also have a little fun with this hot tub or
- 47:43a syringe or whatever else, you know, kind of get playful.
- 47:46So this one playful, you know, you're limited because the shark
- 47:50isn't going to do anything other than eat you.
- 47:52But but by doing this, you know Chrissy at the beginning of the
- 47:56first one getting tossed and thrashed around is very exciting
- 47:58and very visceral. You don't want to do that again
- 48:00though. And you can only do that once,
- 48:02and it was done to perfection. So what do you do now?
- 48:04Well, I like that they sort of have the terror of, you know,
- 48:07swim, swim faster, swim faster, swim faster.
- 48:09That's built in. And we have him kind of rushing
- 48:12the boat in flailing about and in horror.
- 48:16I thought really exciting way to die in a movie that has not
- 48:20often been exciting. It's been fine.
- 48:23Like there's nothing necessarily wrong with it.
- 48:25That fire on the boat, buddy. But I wouldn't put exciting and
- 48:27that was an hour ago. That's silver, though, at this
- 48:29to say that's silver. So I think this is really well
- 48:32executed or again, killing people I don't care about, but I
- 48:36thought bring you something new. Sorry, sorry to interrupt.
- 48:38You don't care about Eddie. No.
- 48:41Or Tina did. You see him play the guitar.
- 48:43It's good, but not not my type. And we have a whole other bunch
- 48:47of kids out there as well. And I'm thinking had Brody, not
- 48:51Brady, Brody communicated better to Mike the reasons behind him
- 48:56not wanting to go out to the seas.
- 49:00Instead of saying, oh, I want you to work full time.
- 49:02That's what I want. Yeah, be honest.
- 49:05Just be honest. Transparency.
- 49:06Exactly. There was a shark attack.
- 49:08Mike was saved by the fisherman in the estuary.
- 49:11So Garbage Mike should know better.
- 49:13He should know better. And then he takes his his little
- 49:16brother out and it puts him in harm's way.
- 49:20So that has Brody up in a lighthouse, and I like
- 49:24lighthouses. Pete the Magic Dragon.
- 49:27If you recall, there's a lighthouse in that.
- 49:29Yes, yes, it's. Prevalent in the movie and calls
- 49:33in your favorite mode of transportation.
- 49:36Love the chopper. You know how I say it.
- 49:38Give me a chopper. Yeah, I can guarantee you love
- 49:41this chopper scene better than last week just because you're
- 49:44biased. Absolutely.
- 49:45But yeah, Brody's calling in the chopper.
- 49:47He needs some some help, but he's out on the way out to the
- 49:49lighthouse because he had heard that these kids were going
- 49:51there. And on the way, he finds Tina
- 49:54and I Oh, yeah. I think that this is really.
- 49:57I forgot about that. It's a scene where I don't think
- 49:59she's exceptionally good. No, she's good.
- 50:01But I think the scene needs to be there.
- 50:03I like the trauma I think. In the moment where he's dying,
- 50:06she could have been a little bit better.
- 50:07She's like, make it go away. But I thought here, I thought
- 50:10she, she. Delivers.
- 50:11She's traumatized. I think it's important because
- 50:14so much of this other stuff we talked about last week where
- 50:17nobody seems to give a shit that you're just killing people all
- 50:18the time. You.
- 50:19Got to be. You got to be careful with that
- 50:20because if you don't care about it, then it loses a little bit.
- 50:23Of I'm in the killing people game, I don't care.
- 50:25High 5 right? Like, that's the McLean.
- 50:27Way easy. And this, I find, is at least a
- 50:30human moment in a movie that doesn't have a lot of them.
- 50:32Because again, we don't really care about these kids.
- 50:35No, I certainly don't. I don't.
- 50:36But I, I think that there's room and I'm glad they kind of
- 50:39tackled it and took took advantage of it.
- 50:41But the real question is, Philip, do you believe that a
- 50:45shark I can single handedly take down a.
- 50:49Helicopter. I didn't think that until I saw
- 50:50this movie and I realize sharks can eat a chopper.
- 50:54It's happening. It's happening in real time.
- 50:56I really think this is a very effective scene.
- 50:58Again, I know you say you weren't scared, and I wouldn't
- 51:00say that I was scared, but there's scenes where it's like,
- 51:02I know that's scary, and there's scenes where I know I'm scared.
- 51:06I go into the Halloween Horror Nights at the Universal Studios
- 51:09and I'm just grinning ear to ear, you know, nothing is
- 51:13scaring me. It's just like the magistrate of
- 51:15it. The the gore, the blood, the
- 51:16guts. I'm just like a kid in a candy
- 51:18store. And I'm kind of annoying to, I
- 51:20think some of the people because their job is to try and scare
- 51:22you. But I'm just so enamored of it
- 51:24that it doesn't faze. And I kind of get that when I'm
- 51:27watching some horror movies. I just I love the process.
- 51:30I heard you go in there without your shirt.
- 51:32Now, Now you're scaring now. That's right.
- 51:35No pants. That's what does it.
- 51:37The old Russian roundabout. But the shark thing, another one
- 51:45where I think it probably way back, I thought this is stupid.
- 51:48The chopper, whatever. That's awesome, man.
- 51:50But when I watch it, I'm like, fuck, this is really exciting.
- 51:52Yeah, really well shot, really cool.
- 51:55I don't even care if a shark couldn't do that.
- 51:56It doesn't matter. Doesn't matter.
- 51:58He's not eating the chopper necessarily, He's eating the
- 52:00pontoon that that sinks the right.
- 52:02Like absolutely. It makes sense.
- 52:04I bet you want it though as the blades are kind of coming off.
- 52:08That it would take off one of the heads of the kids?
- 52:10Sure. Absolutely.
- 52:11A. Little Twilight Zone, you know,
- 52:13just something. Yeah.
- 52:15I think that there should have been more damage.
- 52:17Now they damaged the sailboats, which obviously serves the
- 52:19purpose of now they're adrift and they have no means to get
- 52:22out. So it isolates them.
- 52:24But I think, yeah, definitely somebody should have died from
- 52:26some of those blades. Come on, it's.
- 52:28The one kid. It would be nice to get a kill
- 52:30that's not directly. Correct.
- 52:33Shark. It's indirectly like, still the
- 52:35shark is the main problem here. Yeah, I think there's fun in
- 52:38that. There's fun, you know, the
- 52:39shark's having a fun time. Missed opportunity, I agree.
- 52:42But I think the scene is really exciting and really kind of
- 52:45gripping. It's predictable, but I'm
- 52:47engaged. Yeah.
- 52:48You mean you see a comment? I suppose that's OK, though.
- 52:50If it's done well, it doesn't really matter that much.
- 52:53I don't think so. What I think is also kind of
- 52:55compelling is the shark kind of circling, which feels natural.
- 53:00I don't know anything, Shark. Do.
- 53:01Circle. But I feel like they're circling
- 53:03all these boats and kind of causing chaos as a result.
- 53:07Talk to me. My general issue around the
- 53:11shark, keep in mind this is your bad guy.
- 53:14It doesn't have really a personality or motive.
- 53:16We we've already established that.
- 53:17It's an eating machine, all it does.
- 53:19But it's got to be full, like if you just ate somebody, I think
- 53:24you're OK. You don't understand sharks,
- 53:26buddy. It's insatiable.
- 53:27It is. But it felt to me like the shark
- 53:30has been given direction from somebody else.
- 53:34So to me it just feels like it's it's it's doing what someone is
- 53:38telling it to do. Go hit this boat, go after this
- 53:42specific person. Now go over here, do this.
- 53:47It's not doing what a natural the instinct of the shark
- 53:51wouldn't necessarily be, and I maybe it's a little bit of a
- 53:54nitpick, but that's just how it came across.
- 53:56It's how it is. It's not, but it's how you.
- 53:58Think it is. What it The scene is ultimately
- 54:03the payoff by causing that kind of chaos and ramming the boats
- 54:06puts the kids back in the water. And 100%, we have a gold medal
- 54:10performance here, the gold kill. It's fantastic.
- 54:14Now you don't see it because it's a reverse shot from the
- 54:16back of the head if you will. But we watch the shark now come
- 54:19in. Sean is saved by this woman who
- 54:23knows who The Who the name is again all the same, but we watch
- 54:28her get basically devoured, taken under and swam away again
- 54:33like Eddie's killed something fresh and new.
- 54:35The camera angle. Makes up for the lack of what
- 54:39you would want like gore wise. That's right, I would say.
- 54:41And I'm actually OK with that because I love blood and guts
- 54:43and gore. You, you know that.
- 54:44But this instance, I'm like, I love this.
- 54:47So I wouldn't want this to be any different.
- 54:49Well, that. Answers the question.
- 54:50Yeah, I mean, I would like another kill with blood, guts
- 54:53and gore, but this one where it is, I would want to stay because
- 54:56I think it's so effective. And in doing so, we get some
- 55:00Really. Scared people.
- 55:02Yes, we do. And I feel like 5 minutes ago
- 55:05they weren't quite taking it serious enough and things have
- 55:08happened. Yes.
- 55:09And they are still making jokes. That one guy, that one idiot
- 55:12again, don't know his name. Johnny.
- 55:14He's the idiot. Yeah.
- 55:17And I'm like, come on, kids. Like, I'm not buying this.
- 55:20Like at all. Your performance.
- 55:22I'm bored. Exactly.
- 55:23Now we do. And especially in that one
- 55:27woman, I don't know her name. The cousin.
- 55:29I think it's the cousin. It's the cousin.
- 55:31It's the cousin, it's the cousin.
- 55:33She she came to play. She has some great screams.
- 55:37Absolutely. Yeah, She's she's fantastic.
- 55:39Has she been in any horror movies?
- 55:42I don't missed opportunity if she hasn't.
- 55:44No, yeah, I don't think. So it was almost like, OK, all
- 55:47right, I get it. Yeah.
- 55:49But the effort was there, and I'm going to commend it because
- 55:51nobody else is really, you know. Yeah, she should out.
- 55:54She does it a little later too, like it's really, really into
- 55:57it. The camera pushes in on her.
- 55:58She's really kind of shrieking. She's really good.
- 56:00I think Sean Sean's good too, is playing really ironically young
- 56:05as looking and shaking and doesn't know what's happening.
- 56:07I think he delivers some good stuff, but I agree for the panic
- 56:11to settle in takes a little longer than I think it should.
- 56:15But when it does, I think all the kids really, but
- 56:17particularly the ones we're just talking about, really elevate
- 56:20the game to feel like you're in something terrifying.
- 56:24But luckily our hero. So I would argue the shark's the
- 56:28hero. Brody comes in on the old
- 56:31police. Boat coming in to save the day.
- 56:33He's not authorized to to drive that because he's no longer an
- 56:37officer of the law and didn't work out too well though.
- 56:40Doesn't last very long a little. Bit of a mishap there, yeah.
- 56:43Yeah, this is like Deus Ex machina, right?
- 56:46Which is like the setup. It has no purpose except for the
- 56:50fact that it needs to be here to in order to end the movie.
- 56:53So it's like he gets all the way out there, ties the thing on,
- 56:56there's the rope from the chopper.
- 56:58Nope. Break snaps, and then the shark
- 57:01comes along the boat. Now, what do you think of that?
- 57:02Because there's a moment where I think it looks fake.
- 57:05No. When the shark comes up against
- 57:07the boat. You're crazy.
- 57:08Yeah. I feel like my memory again was
- 57:10that this looks like the cheapest looking scene.
- 57:12That's the next movie. And then I watch it and I'm
- 57:15like, shit, that looks really good.
- 57:17So whatever. My memory of putting this movie
- 57:19in like the shitty movie category.
- 57:21I think I I really like the shark stuff again, I I still
- 57:24think the rest of it doesn't really work anyway, but that
- 57:27shark jumps, Brody has another moment of what the you know and
- 57:31then crashes right into the cable junction.
- 57:34They call it whatever. It is.
- 57:35It's a little convenient. Wow, what would be a movie
- 57:38without a little bit of contrivance slash convenience?
- 57:41Just contrivance mean convenience.
- 57:43I suppose a contrivance could be a convenience, but it's not
- 57:47exclusively a convenience. Got it.
- 57:50Helpful. Chalk it up.
- 57:53Anyways, that girl, which we don't know her name, has one
- 57:57last good scream. Really brings it home.
- 57:59Very good in the trailer. Another one.
- 58:01It's a really good trailer because you think that it's like
- 58:03exciting and terrifying. It's all the best part trailer.
- 58:06It really is. And this is sort of the end of
- 58:08the trailer with the camera pushing in, her just shaking her
- 58:11head in terror, holding her hair.
- 58:13And you're like, shit, I want to see what's causing.
- 58:15That I want to have what she's having exactly.
- 58:17Basically, and you know, trailers get pros and cons over
- 58:21the years, I try and not watch them anymore at all because for
- 58:23you to give everything away in modern age, but some of those
- 58:27trailers hold up pretty darn well.
- 58:29And you can check out every trailer for every movie we do
- 58:31here on the podcast over on our Facebook page.
- 58:34Absolutely. I'll check.
- 58:35I'll check it out myself, but yeah, we're kind of in the last
- 58:39minutes here. Yeah, we get the payoff.
- 58:41How do you top shooting the oxygen tank in a shark and do
- 58:47you think this does it? This is crazy but I think this
- 58:52one is better. Wow, bold.
- 58:56Am I alone or am I an outlier? Or I think maybe I'm not like
- 59:01remembering the original. It's not fresh in my mind.
- 59:03Shoots the oxygen tank, blows them up.
- 59:05OK, all right, take it easy. You don't ruin.
- 59:06It for a smile, you son of a bitch.
- 59:08I mean may this may not have. The line, I think it's the line
- 59:11that really hurts this one to me.
- 59:12OK, I'm open up and say, ah, it's just a little too janky,
- 59:17you know, for me, I think. Maybe it's just the visuals, but
- 59:20I do like that. Yeah.
- 59:21Yeah. I think they do a really good
- 59:22job considering it's 1978 of zapping the shark.
- 59:25Sure. And it goes on for, you know,
- 59:27good, you know, 1520 and we understand it, right, They've
- 59:29established. That the electrical current, you
- 59:31know the horse, it's there. Checks out buddy.
- 59:33Also established he uses sound now because he knows there's a
- 59:36new trick to lure the shark. That can drive in some possibly
- 59:39inconvenience, Absolutely. We don't know.
- 59:41I will say my probably the lasting kind of legacy, if you
- 59:46will, of this kill this the shark death at the end of this
- 59:49movie is it is and was the final kill during the Jaws ride at
- 59:56Universal Studios. So at the end of the ride near a
- 1:00:00cable junction, he jumps and gets fried up.
- 1:00:02So there is an element that everyone I watch this, I think
- 1:00:05of that ride, so I don't. That tells me it's the best one.
- 1:00:08I think it's the line that hurts it.
- 1:00:10The open up and say I just can't get over it.
- 1:00:12The smile, you son of a bitch. I really enjoy this.
- 1:00:14I don't like as much, even if I like to kill we.
- 1:00:17Can get. Somebody to edit that.
- 1:00:19That's right. But overall, I think it's a
- 1:00:20fitting end, let's say. And that is the end and it's
- 1:00:23very much the end. Fade to black like the other
- 1:00:25one. I do kind of wonder how they're
- 1:00:27getting home. Both destroyed.
- 1:00:29The sales are destroyed and. There could be another cousin.
- 1:00:32Could be a cousin, you don't know.
- 1:00:34But anyway, that's Jaws 2 my man.
- 1:00:36It's it's electrified. That was Jaws 1.1.
- 1:00:40Fair. Where is your final thoughts?
- 1:00:43What are you? What are you feeling about this
- 1:00:45one? I'm going to do the old
- 1:00:47switcheroo on you from last week, The Rushing Roundabout.
- 1:00:52I was going to say that, but I don't used it once.
- 1:00:55There's a lot of Die Hard movies.
- 1:00:56Why would you watch that one if there's a better one?
- 1:00:59And I think we're in the same situation.
- 1:01:01What Jaws 2 does makes you want to watch the original Jaws.
- 1:01:06I think so. Because it does everything this
- 1:01:08does except for that final kill better.
- 1:01:11So why would you watch this one? That's that's my my point.
- 1:01:14Not to say this movie isn't entertaining.
- 1:01:15Sure has some stuff in there. A couple lows we both agree with
- 1:01:20the pacing not great and it is missing again a supporting cast.
- 1:01:24Unfortunately his wife isn't enough to bring it.
- 1:01:27Larry's not enough. Even Stefano isn't in and enough
- 1:01:30or does enough to add enough value.
- 1:01:33Agreed. So ultimately, that's where I
- 1:01:36stand with this one if I want the Jaws experience as it
- 1:01:40stands. I'm watching the original, Yeah,
- 1:01:43I couldn't agree more actually. Now, I will say I only really
- 1:01:47like the shark stuff in this movie, whereas in the other
- 1:01:51movie I like the people stuff. So to your point, I think this
- 1:01:53movie just wastes all of the character.
- 1:01:56There's nothing really there for me.
- 1:01:58But the shark stuff is so much better than I remembered it
- 1:02:01being that it elevates the movie to to a place where I find it
- 1:02:03entertaining for sure. But I do think everything else
- 1:02:06is really dry and paced poorly in this and that.
- 1:02:10Jaws is a perfect movie. So anything less than that?
- 1:02:13Is less than perfect. Is less than perfect and I think
- 1:02:15this is definitely less than perfect, but considering where 3
- 1:02:20and 4 go, it is definitely at the high.
- 1:02:23Watermark. So we're so we're going to leave
- 1:02:25it there. Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 1:02:26That's not enough. A bad movie, David, is certainly
- 1:02:29not enough to stop us. You should know that by now.
- 1:02:31Do you know how many Bruce Willis movies I have?
- 1:02:33On my show I was looking up as I'm to be 147.
- 1:02:36Times on there all right. Just warning you.
- 1:02:38Just warning you buddy more. This is reciprocal tariff
- 1:02:41situation here. You're.
- 1:02:42You're going to punish me? And out of all those 140, only
- 1:02:45three of them are good, so. And we've already watched them
- 1:02:49probably. Well, that's it, folks.
