- 0:17May. Hello, good to have your company
- 0:20as we are going to together read another chapter of God's Word.
- 0:24That is what we do. That's the name of the podcast
- 0:27and I'm delighted to have your company.
- 0:29If you are joining us for the first time or just recently,
- 0:34Great to have your company. Thank you for subscribing and
- 0:38joining in so that you can bring each day to the rhythm of God's
- 0:44word and open yourself up to the mystery and the wonder of a
- 0:48living God who threw this living word has something surprising to
- 0:53communicate with us each day that we don't even see coming.
- 0:56But that is why we worship a God who is much bigger than us.
- 1:01So it doesn't matter whether you've been here one day, one
- 1:04week, one year, or this is your 4th year as it is for me.
- 1:08So great that we can all come together, gather round the
- 1:13incredible word of God and hear what he has to say to each one
- 1:17of us individually. What an amazing thing.
- 1:21And today we are going to hear the last words of David.
- 1:25His life will continue and he will go on through the end of
- 1:29this book. And you hear about David in
- 1:33First Kings as well. But this is where David's last
- 1:37words are recorded. So it's a special place.
- 1:41And we will hear these words as we have followed the journey of
- 1:45his life from that brave little boy on the field of war with his
- 1:51brothers, bringing them food and ending up fighting the the giant
- 1:55Goliath all the way through. Running away from the king,
- 1:59becoming the king. Escaping his son, returning to
- 2:02the throne and creating this incredible sense of peace, this
- 2:07incredible victory, the dominance in that region of the
- 2:10world that his son Solomon would go on to enjoy and be able to
- 2:14focus on bringing Israel not into war, but into really the
- 2:19height of its existence as a nation.
- 2:22So here we hear David's last words.
- 2:25So let's do it, shall we? Let's read these words together
- 2:28in Second Samuel 23. These are the last words of
- 2:42David. David the son of Jesse, speaks.
- 2:47David, the man who was raised up so high.
- 2:51David the man anointed by the God of Jacob.
- 2:55David, the sweet Sarmast of Israel, the Spirit of the Lord,
- 3:00speaks through me. His words are upon my tongue.
- 3:04The God of Israel spoke, the rock of Israel said to me.
- 3:09The one who rules righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is
- 3:15like the light of mourning at sunrise, like a morning without
- 3:19clouds, like the gleaming of the sun on new grass after rain.
- 3:25Is it not my family God has chosen?
- 3:28Yes, He has made an everlasting covenant with me.
- 3:33His agreement is arranged and guaranteed in every detail.
- 3:38He will ensure my safety and success.
- 3:42But the Godless are like the Thorns to be thrown away, for
- 3:46they tear the hand that touches them.
- 3:48One must use iron tools to chop them down.
- 3:52They will be totally consumed by fire.
- 3:58These are the names of David's mightiest warriors.
- 4:01The first was Joshua Beim, the Hackmanite.
- 4:05He was the leader of the three, the three mightiest warriors
- 4:09among David's men. He once used his spear to kill
- 4:12800 enemy warriors in a single battle.
- 4:16Next in rank among the three was Eliazar, son of Dodai, a
- 4:21descendant of a howa. Once Eliezer and David stood
- 4:24together against the Philistines when the entire Israelite army
- 4:28had fled. He killed Philistines until his
- 4:31hand was too tired to lift his sword, and the Lord gave him a
- 4:35great victory that day. The rest of the army did not
- 4:38return until it was time to collect the plunder.
- 4:42Next in rank was Shama, son of Aggie from Harrah.
- 4:47One time the Philistines gathered at Lehigh and attacked
- 4:50the Israelites in a field full of lentils.
- 4:54The Israelite army fled, but Shama held his ground in the
- 4:58middle of the field and beat back the Philistines.
- 5:01So the Lord brought about a great victory once during the
- 5:05harvest, when David was in The Cave of Adullam, the Philistine
- 5:09army was camped in the valley of Rephaim.
- 5:12The three who were among the 30, an elite group among David's
- 5:17fighting men, went down to meet him there.
- 5:20David was staying in the stronghold at the time, and the
- 5:23Philistine detachment had occupied the town of Bethlehem.
- 5:27David remarked longingly to his men.
- 5:30Oh, how I would love some of that good water from the well by
- 5:34the gate in Bethlehem. So the three broke through the
- 5:37Philistines line, drew some water from the well by the gate
- 5:41in Bethlehem, and brought it back to David.
- 5:44But he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an
- 5:48offering to the Lord. The Lord forbid that I should
- 5:51drink this, he exclaimed. This water is as precious as the
- 5:55blood of these men who risk their lives to bring it to me,
- 6:00said David. Did not drink it.
- 6:02These are examples of the exploits of the three.
- 6:06Abishai, son of Zeruiah, the brother of Joab, was the leader
- 6:10of the 30. He once used his spear to kill
- 6:13300 enemy warriors in a single battle.
- 6:16It was by such feats that he became as famous as the three.
- 6:21Abshire was the most famous of the 30 and was their commander
- 6:25that he was not one of the three.
- 6:28There was also Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, A valiant warrior from
- 6:33Kuziel. He did many heroic deeds which
- 6:37included killing two champions of Moab.
- 6:39Another time, on a snowy day, he chased the lion down into a pit
- 6:45and killed it. Once armed only with a club, he
- 6:49killed an imposing Egyptian warrior who was armed with a
- 6:52spear. Banaya wrenched the spear from
- 6:56the Egyptians hand and killed him with it.
- 6:58Deeds like these made Banaya as famous as the three mightiest
- 7:02warriors. He was more honoured than the
- 7:05other members of the 30, though he was not one of the three, and
- 7:09David made him a captain of his bodyguard.
- 7:12Other members of the 30 included Asahel, Joe's brother Allen Nan,
- 7:18son of Dodo from Bethlehem, Schema from Harrod, Alika from
- 7:23Harrod, Helez from Palon. Ira son of Icash from Toccoa,
- 7:30Abiezer from Anathoth. Subeki from Hasha, Zalmon from
- 7:35Ahawa, Maharani from Netfa, Halid son of Banana from Netfa,
- 7:42Ithai Son of Ribia from Gibier in the land of Benjamin.
- 7:46Banaya from Python, Hurrah from Nahala.
- 7:50Gash ABI Albon from Araba. Azmaveth from Bahram, Alabama,
- 7:56From Charbon. The sons of Jason.
- 8:00Jonathan, son of Shaggy From Harrah.
- 8:03Ahem, son of Shera. From Harrah.
- 8:06Eliphalet, son of a hasbah from Maker.
- 8:09Alium, son of a hydrofoil from Gilo Hezrou from Carmel.
- 8:15Parai from ABBA, Ego son of Nathan, from Zoba.
- 8:20Barney from Gad Zelik from Amon Nahari from Beyrouth.
- 8:25The armour bearer of Joab, son of Zeruiah Ira from Jatta.
- 8:30Garab from Jatta Oriah, the Hittite.
- 8:34There were 37 in all. Lord, we hear David's last
- 8:48words. We hear this long list of people
- 8:51who fought and served with him, and we are aware that their
- 8:56lives came and their lives ended and our lives long before we
- 9:02were born. You loved us.
- 9:05You shaped us. You knew us, and here we are,
- 9:09living our lives. And then, when our lives come to
- 9:12a close, Lord, there you will be, your arms wrapped around us,
- 9:17waiting, waiting to welcome us home with you God.
- 9:23You are an eternal God, and we your people will be with you for
- 9:28that eternity. And Lord, we can't wait to spend
- 9:32all that time with you. But even here and now, we just
- 9:37thank you for your presence with us.
- 9:39We thank you that every step we take, every chapter of our lives
- 9:43we live through. There you are, right beside us,
- 9:47right now, right beside us. Thank you Jesus, for your
- 9:53presence, for your love, and for your provision now and forever.
- 10:01Amen.
