- 0:31our true authentic self of who we are and remembering
- 0:35who and what we are as we go along our journey
- 0:38of life. And so my name is Summer. I am your
- 0:42host and I'm so glad to have you. This is episode
- 0:45one and we are going to be talking about resiliency.
- 0:50You know, resiliency is having the motivation
- 0:55and the strength to continue to move forward
- 0:58as we go through life's challenges that come
- 1:01our way and you know I kind of just wanted to
- 1:04talk about that with you today you know there
- 1:08are moments in life that change us forever I
- 1:13mean they do they can be happy pleasant cheerful
- 1:17moments and then they can be challenging moments
- 1:20moments that push us in a direction that we would
- 1:25never ever push ourselves for our design or pick
- 1:30for ourselves, right? To go through things that
- 1:35can show us truly where our strength lies. You
- 1:39know, for me, one of those moments happened in
- 1:442002. I was coming home and I lived in an apartment
- 1:51complex. And as I approached my apartment, I
- 1:55was on the backside of the apartment complex.
- 1:57And as I approached my apartment, there was someone
- 2:02outside of my apartment windows and they came
- 2:07moving towards me and they pulled a revolver
- 2:11out of their pocket. And they held me up at gunpoint.
- 2:17They tried to talk me into going into my apartment.
- 2:20And that did not happen. We ended up in a physical
- 2:24altercation in the breezeway of the apartment.
- 2:29And I ended up with a damaged vocal box, two
- 2:37broken ribs, and really just beat up and bruised
- 2:41from the whole situation. The assailant ended
- 2:45up running away and leaving the situation. but
- 2:51that experience oh that experience was rough
- 2:55and It sent me you know along a journey that
- 3:03I never Knew that that I could handle or that
- 3:08I could do with I remember very distinctly Probably
- 3:13is probably been like two years before that happened
- 3:16co -worker was telling me about an experience
- 3:19where she got mugged and I was just like oh my
- 3:22gosh I can't believe that that would be so hard
- 3:24to deal with and then two years later it happens
- 3:27to me and you know during those times you find
- 3:33the power within to be able to move forward you
- 3:37find the power within to continue to get back
- 3:43to the place where you need to be Right or even
- 3:47in a better place than you were beforehand and
- 3:50I will say I actually ended up in a better place
- 3:53Than I was before that You know, I that night
- 4:00I did fight back and it was a fight for my life
- 4:04You know, but the real battle wasn't that moment
- 4:08The real battle wasn't just that single incident
- 4:13you know, at that moment in which it happened,
- 4:15the real battle came afterwards. You know, it
- 4:19was the emotional, it was the spiritual challenge
- 4:22and it was the deeply personal challenge of all
- 4:25of that and what it all brought. You know, I
- 4:29could have sheltered myself and lived in fear.
- 4:33I could have become a victim of the situation,
- 4:36but I didn't. I rose past that and I moved past
- 4:40that. I actually Ended up It's very interesting.
- 4:46So I will say over the next few months and years
- 4:49have followed I had to learn how to feel safe
- 4:53again in my own body I had to learn to have a
- 4:56feel safe again being alone and I'll be honest
- 4:59with you. There are moments still today Where
- 5:02that PTSD sinks in, you know kind of sneaks up
- 5:06on me, but I have tools now to work through those
- 5:10right and so And I use those tools to work through
- 5:16When that PTSD comes start sneaking back in for
- 5:21this, you know, and that's just it I Push forward
- 5:25each time even if it's just baby steps to be
- 5:28able to push forward Continuing to push forward
- 5:31is what resiliency is. It's not dealing with
- 5:35just the one incident At the moment that it happens
- 5:40It's dealing with it as it reoccurs over time.
- 5:45You know how to breathe through the waves of
- 5:47fear that come without warning. How to reclaim
- 5:51your sense of power after it feels like it's
- 5:54been taken from you. You know those are the things
- 5:57that resiliency is all about. It's not about
- 6:01surviving the one event. It's about showing up
- 6:04for yourself every single day. Even when the
- 6:08memories resurface. And even when that anxiety
- 6:12whispers his doubts. The anxiety normally kicks
- 6:16in for me, like if I'm house sitting for someone
- 6:19and it's the first time that I've stayed there.
- 6:23That's usually when it kicks in because of the
- 6:27noises that the house makes, I guess, or just
- 6:29being in a place that's not my own for the first
- 6:33time, being in an unfamiliar space. That can
- 6:38do it for me. You know, I practice, so what do
- 6:42I do? So I reassure myself that I am safe and
- 6:46in a safe place. If the anxiety creeps in, I
- 6:53do the five, four, three, two, one. So using
- 6:57that with your senses. So for example, I would
- 7:00identify five things I can see, four things I
- 7:04can touch, three things I can hear, two things
- 7:09You know, I can feel and one thing I can taste
- 7:13or smell like two things I can smell and one
- 7:17thing I can taste. And so what that does is when
- 7:20you use these type of tools, it helps you come
- 7:27back to the moment and it helps quiet the mind
- 7:31and which can help settle down that anxiety or
- 7:36that fear that comes creeping in. So using those
- 7:40things are very powerful tools. I'm journaling
- 7:43about what you're feeling is really great, you
- 7:46know, and being able to when you're journaling,
- 7:50you can share your fear, but you're also at the
- 7:53same time, you can remind yourself of the reality
- 7:57of that fear of where it's coming from and being
- 8:00able to settle with that. There's nothing wrong.
- 8:05You know, you don't don't blame yourself. For
- 8:08being in a situation for being in that fearful
- 8:11state. It's more like taking control of that
- 8:13fearful state and owning it. So it doesn't control
- 8:17you. I mean, it's easy. It's easy to allow the
- 8:25fear to take over. It's easy to shelter yourself
- 8:28down and like be a hermit and to hide in a closet
- 8:32or hide from it. So you don't have to face it.
- 8:37You know, but that's not living. That's not life.
- 8:42Learning to move past it and move forward and
- 8:44to conquer it. That's life. That's living. You
- 8:49know. So it's like showing up for yourself every
- 8:55single day. It's the quiet and the strength.
- 9:03You know, that gets you through. remembering
- 9:07that you know you may have fallen but you've
- 9:10gotten back up you may have been bent and bruised
- 9:14and battered but you stood up and you move through
- 9:18it it's the courage of keep moving forward even
- 9:24when the path isn't clear there will be times
- 9:27where the path will not be clear for what you
- 9:30need to do what you need to go through The continuing
- 9:33to move forward and discovering that path each
- 9:36step of the way is a brilliant, brilliant way
- 9:39of resiliency. You know, it's the grace that
- 9:43allows the healing to unfold layer by layer without
- 9:47judgment. You can't judge yourself in these times.
- 9:52You got to continue to move forward and give
- 9:54yourself grace. Learn to forgive, not only forgiving
- 9:58others, but forgiving yourself. You know, when
- 10:01I went through that experience in 2002, there
- 10:04came a point during my healing process that I
- 10:07had to forgive my salient, you know, and the
- 10:11forgiveness was not for that person. I don't
- 10:16know who they were. As far as I know, I've never
- 10:20seen them since then and I'll probably never
- 10:22see them again. But I had to give forgiveness
- 10:28to that young man for what he had done. He didn't
- 10:33know any better. You know, he thought that, you
- 10:37know, I don't know what he thought. Honestly,
- 10:40I don't know what he thought. I don't know what
- 10:42his purpose was or was for that. Whatever his
- 10:46purpose was, it didn't happen. You know, because
- 10:49I wasn't going to allow him to let it happen.
- 10:52You know, because I fought. I fought. You know,
- 10:57so. I had to give forgiveness for what took place
- 11:00and what happened. And a part of that was me,
- 11:05you know, asking the universe to provide him
- 11:08guidance on where he needs to go on his life
- 11:11to have a loving, fulfilling journey ahead of
- 11:17him, you know, without hurting people or hurting
- 11:22others. and for him to realize the pain that
- 11:26he inflicts on others through his actions and
- 11:29for him to have the ability to forgive himself
- 11:32as well. When you give forgiveness to others,
- 11:39it's not for them. That forgiveness is truly
- 11:43just for you. When you can forgive and let go,
- 11:48that's a part of the healing as well. And it's
- 11:52not it sometimes it's not easy You know and you
- 11:55may have to try to do that forgiveness over and
- 11:57over and over again Before it really kind of
- 12:00resonates and sticks with you and that's okay,
- 12:03right? This is a journey. It's a journey of moving
- 12:06forward step by step and even when those Little
- 12:11steps, you know happen is still a step forward
- 12:15and guess what if we take a step back It's okay.
- 12:20You know why? Because we're gonna pick ourselves
- 12:22up. We're gonna dust it off. We're gonna move
- 12:25forward again. Right? I made a choice to be a
- 12:29survivor and not a victim. It was my choice.
- 12:34It was my desire and it was my purpose. To turn
- 12:39the pain into purpose. Become the hero in your
- 12:42own story. One of the ways that I turned from,
- 12:51one of the ways I stepped into that survivor
- 12:53thing is I went and I learned how, so I went
- 13:03and I took personal protection courses, refused
- 13:06to be a victim courses and I took like, I took
- 13:13courses to teach these things as well. So to
- 13:16teach refuse to be a victim, to teach self -defense
- 13:22and to teach other women about handguns and how
- 13:27to use them and how to protect themselves. Now,
- 13:30I'm not here to promote the use of that, but
- 13:34I'm here to say you have to do what's needed
- 13:37for you to feel safe and be protected. guess
- 13:44it was probably at least two or three years I
- 13:46traveled around the metro area and held classes
- 13:51just for women to empower them to give them the
- 13:56strength to protect themselves and do for them
- 13:59because I had to do it for me and I was thankful
- 14:04that I knew the basics at that time to be able
- 14:09to protect myself. And I wanted to empower other
- 14:13women with the ability to do that for themselves.
- 14:16So that's what I did. It was healing. It was
- 14:27empowering. And I am thankful that I could do
- 14:35that. I'm thankful that I could give other women
- 14:40their power to be able to take care of themselves
- 14:44so no matter what storm you're walking through
- 14:55whether it's calm whether it's rough and and
- 15:01and turbulent regardless of what it is it is
- 15:05calm on the other side And when you get to that
- 15:09other side, you're gonna be so proud of yourself.
- 15:13And it's gonna give you a strength that you can
- 15:16carry forward with you from here on out. And
- 15:20there's nothing that can break that because you
- 15:23did it yourself and you were powerful enough
- 15:28to go through it. So just always remember that.
- 15:33Resiliency doesn't always look like strength.
- 15:39Sometimes it looks like tears. Sometimes it looks
- 15:43like rest. Many times it's taking one small step
- 15:48at a time. But each step that you take moving
- 15:53forward. Each step that you take. I don't care
- 15:57how teeny tiny it is. I don't care how long it
- 16:00takes you to take that step. Each step is a step
- 16:05forward and each step is a step healing. And
- 16:07each step takes you to that place of resiliency
- 16:10that you deserve. Find a strength within. Find
- 16:15people around you that can support you along
- 16:18your way. And find it within yourself. Find it
- 16:23in your heart. Find it in your soul. Because
- 16:27it's there. It's just waiting for you to wake
- 16:30it up. So find it for you. If you're watching
- 16:38this today, this is what I want you to know.
- 16:45You are stronger than you realize. You are healing
- 16:52even when it doesn't feel like it. And you are
- 16:56never, can't say this enough, you are never alone.
- 17:04there will be times where you may feel very lonely
- 17:07the only thing you have to do is reach out to
- 17:10your higher self your higher power the divine
- 17:15the universe your god whatever you want to call
- 17:20it only thing you have to do is reach out to
- 17:24that universal energy that's there that's within
- 17:27us all and ask for it to wrap this loving loving
- 17:34energy around you so that you can feel it. To
- 17:37give you the strength to move forward and be
- 17:40powerful in your own self. Is this there for
- 17:43you? You just have to open up to receive it.
- 17:47You have to open up to feel it and to own it.
- 17:50But it is there. And you are never ever alone.
- 18:02But let this be a reminder, resiliency isn't
- 18:07about never falling. It's about always rising.
- 18:12It's always about picking yourself up, dusting
- 18:15yourself off, and moving forward. There's no
- 18:20right or wrong way to do it, just doing it, right?
- 18:28Thank you so much for being here. Thank you so
