- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Pod.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: Welcome back.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to another episode of Say Who Say Pod.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: He's Danny O'Neill.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: No tie for Danny, but he is wearing the sports coat.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: I kind of liked how it looked last week.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: I kind of liked how it looked.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's a, maybe it's some vanity peeking through.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Maybe there is a glimpse of my,
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: my former self who used to,
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: who used to somewhat dress up each day for work,
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: but I,
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: I kind of liked how it looked.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: I think that's what fed the algorithm.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: They pulled, they were like, who's this sharp looking guy?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Let's feed this to Husky fans.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Uh,
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: Thanks to everybody listening anywhere, as always.
- 0:45But a special shout-out to folks who are listening slash
- 0:49watching on YouTube,
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: who watched our YouTube debut last week.
- 0:56quite the strong reception i gotta say i'm not a podcast
- 1:00watcher but a lot of
- 1:01people are it's an interesting phenomenon i think with our show
- 1:04in particular when
- 1:05you hear 150 some episodes of two people and then you have a
- 1:08chance to like see
- 1:09like what do these guys actually look like you know what is uh
- 1:12what is the inside
- 1:13of christian capel's home office in tacoma look like and then
- 1:17you see it and you're
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: like oh okay
- 1:20Last week I was squatting in front of a table in a hotel room
- 1:23at the Sheraton in
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: downtown Seattle,
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: but now I'm back in lovely New York City.
- 1:28yeah well it's slightly better microphone a little bit yeah i
- 1:31do have i do have a
- 1:32much better microphone instead although i like the look of
- 1:35people like holding
- 1:37their the iphone headphone little thing for the earbuds in
- 1:43front of them like a
- 1:44microphone i think it's such a low rent janky way of doing it
- 1:47that i i like the
- 1:49aesthetic of it people love the organic the organic vibe man
- 1:53they like that
- 1:55We're going to talk about star freshmen at Washington training
- 1:59camp today.
- 2:01First,
- 2:02Danny,
- 2:02I want to put you in the position of general manager slash head
- 2:07coach.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: You're heading up a recruiting department.
- 2:09And let's say that that recruiting department is at the
- 2:13University of Arizona in
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Tucson,
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Arizona.
- 2:17And let's say there's a high school player,
- 2:20a receiver,
- 2:21playing his high school ball
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: 20 minutes from your stadium, thereabouts, you could say he's local.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:31He's not the ideal height for a receiver,
- 2:34and he does not have elite speed for his size.
- 2:38So he's not a guy that the big programs on the West Coast are
- 2:42probably going to be,
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: like,
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: clamoring for.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: This is someone who you could probably get if you wanted.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: But...
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: He's the state's all time record holder in career receptions.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: He is a 50 tackle multi-interception guy as a safety.
- 3:08He is a decathlete and he plays basketball and he's the Arizona
- 3:18state Gatorade
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: player of the year in football.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Would you recruit him?
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Would you, would you reach out at that point?
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: I would have to have a compelling reason.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Look,
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: I will have a general rule of thumb.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: If the guy is named the best high school player in your state,
- 3:38I would need a compelling reason not to have him come to my
- 3:41school if I'm a public
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: university.
- 3:44I would need a compelling reason that this just isn't going to
- 3:47work at the next
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: level to not be offering him,
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: absolutely reaching out to him,
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: but really want him on the team.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Jed Fish agreed with you.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: And when he was the head coach at Arizona,
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: his staff did indeed recruit Desmond Roebuck,
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: star athlete from Marana High School.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's just outside Tucson or actually in Tucson.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: The address is one thing, but it's basically in Tucson.
- 4:20Not surprising that he still wanted him when that staff came to
- 4:25Washington.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Not surprising that Desmond Roebuck committed to Washington.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: And to that staff that believed in him all along.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Would you believe that Arizona's new coaching staff did not recruit him?
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: It surprises me.
- 4:39Was it so much of a done deal that he was going with fish that
- 4:44they didn't?
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: But even then, you've got to be reaching out to him, right?
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Even if it's just a formality at that point.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would guess...
- 4:55there was probably some thought that like,
- 4:56well,
- 4:57the groundwork's been laid.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: He loves that staff.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: If they want him, they're going to get him.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Let's not waste our time.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: But imagine Jed Fish and his staff coming into UW and they're being,
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: and again,
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: we're not talking about a blue chip recruit,
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: so it's a little bit different.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's criminally underrated for what he was in high school.
- 5:17Imagine Jed Fish and his staff coming to UW and there's a kid
- 5:22at,
- 5:23I don't know,
- 5:25kennedy catholic or federal way or who's like the state's
- 5:29all-time all-time leader
- 5:32in receptions and a gatorade state player of the year and one
- 5:36of the best athletes
- 5:36in the history of his school and you could get him and you
- 5:41decide yeah we're just
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: not going to bother because he's probably going somewhere else
- 5:47People who have listened to this podcast for any length of time
- 5:51understand that I
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: was less than full-throated in my enthusiasm for Jed Fish,
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: first when he was at Arizona,
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: and then later even before the actual hiring at Washington.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: One of the most significant things that I heard in people telling me,
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: hey,
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: you need to reconsider that or this is actually a good position.
- 6:12One came from someone on Twitter and another came from someone
- 6:15who I know who's a
- 6:16high school coach down in Arizona saying Jed Fish did an
- 6:19incredible job of
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: rebuilding relationships with local high school coaches down there.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: That what had happened was
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: While someone was at at Arizona and to a lesser extent,
- 6:33even Rich Rod that Jed Fish had gone in and done really hard
- 6:37work to build
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: relationships with the schools.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I think it's the right way to.
- 6:42I think that's I think that's how you have to do things unless
- 6:46you are at one of
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: the eight to twelve.
- 6:49schools that are legitimate no doubt about it blue bloods
- 6:53unless you're at uh
- 6:56michigan unless you're at alabama and even then i don't think
- 7:01you can completely
- 7:02write off your local your local school so if only for the
- 7:06appearances of this is
- 7:07who we are we recruit good great football players in our state
- 7:13i think i think you
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: have to make those calls
- 7:16And maybe the comparison to like,
- 7:18oh,
- 7:18if they came to Washington and a Seattle guy,
- 7:20would they?
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's not even the right comparison.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Because I think Washington,
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: and this has always been the case,
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: but especially in the Big Ten,
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: you've got to feel like
- 7:32there's no reason why every one of our receiver signees every
- 7:37year shouldn't be a
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: four-star guy because of your proximity to California.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: And there's just a lot of available skill talent out here.
- 7:45And so if you're going to take someone who doesn't have the
- 7:48offers and is rated a
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: little bit lower,
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: it's because you really,
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: really believe in them.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, did that with Desmond Roebuck, right?
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: They were clearly, really believed in him at Arizona.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, I,
- 8:02Arizona is a recruiting program that's so thriving that you
- 8:07don't even want to,
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: like,
- 8:08go hard after the kid in Tucson who's the all-time leader in
- 8:13receptions in the
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: state who's,
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: like,
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: this just awesome athlete,
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: too,
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: right?
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Does everything...
- 8:19great defensive player great hands great route runner just he's
- 8:24like he's a ball
- 8:25player and you know that's that's the word you'd use to
- 8:28describe him he's a ball
- 8:29player so you know you look at arizona's 25 class and it's like
- 8:34man they didn't
- 8:36think he was worth like a crying like i i don't want to go too
- 8:40hard on it because
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: you don't know that you don't know the details but i just do i feel like
- 8:45I feel like years could pass and you could look at Desmond
- 8:47Robux recruiting profile
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: and you say,
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: okay,
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Arizona state offered him.
- 8:50And then like a couple FCS programs offered him,
- 8:53where was Arizona on this kid?
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: And it, you know, it might've been wasted effort anyway.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: And Hey, he was all set for Jed fish.
- 9:01And even if he had that little Arizona offer on there,
- 9:05what,
- 9:05what difference would it have made?
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: But I say all this to say,
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: As we sit here now on Wednesday,
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: August 6th,
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: and Washington has practiced six times this camp,
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: I'm not terribly surprised that...
- 9:21underrated under recruited Desmond Roebuck has been one of the
- 9:25most impressive
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: players in camp so far.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Now he's getting opportunities with Denzel Boston on the sideline.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: And I think if Raiden Vines bright is healthy,
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: he probably is first in line among freshmen receivers to play.
- 9:39You got to see him a little bit in the spring game,
- 9:42but Desmond Roebuck catches everything.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Seems like he's always open.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: He's a pretty natural fluid mover.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: I think his best 100 meter time in high school was like 11.5.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: That was not as a senior.
- 9:57So I think it's probably fair to assume he's a little faster
- 10:00than that now.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: But even if he weren't,
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: if he had the same exact high school career in Tuscaloosa,
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Alabama,
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: I don't think anybody's going to be saying like,
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: oh my God,
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: how did Alabama not recruit this guy?
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Alabama can get five star, four star, top 100 elite athletes.
- 10:17Guys are going to be high NFL draft picks basically at will at
- 10:21that position.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: So I get it.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: And I think that...
- 10:25The size speed combination probably precludes him from being on
- 10:29the board of a lot
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: of programs at receiver.
- 10:31I think there are probably a lot of programs that just have
- 10:34he's how tall.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: OK, well, if that's his height, he needs to be this fast.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: OK, he's not that fast.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: All right, then we're not going to recruit him.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: But watch the tape.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Turn on the tape.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: He's a ball player.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And you're seeing that at practice.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: He's had a couple crushing blocks.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: You could tell he's a big effort guy.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: You could tell he works really hard.
- 10:56Jed Fish called him out before practice even started as a guy
- 11:00that he was already
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: hearing about in workouts.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: I don't know...
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: what the depth chart looks like for him this year.
- 11:09It seems like they only,
- 11:11we talked last week,
- 11:11they only want to play four receivers.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: You know Denzel Boston,
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: regularly anyway,
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: you know Denzel Boston and Rasheed Williams are going to be involved.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: You know Amari Evans and Kevin Green are going to be involved.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: It seems like Raiden Vinesbright's probably involved.
- 11:24Audrick Harris is in the mix,
- 11:26and so you're getting a little bit crowded there.
- 11:28But whether it's this year or down the road,
- 11:30I mean,
- 11:30he just seems like the kind of guy...
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: You know, every program has them every now and then.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Where is he the biggest guy?
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: No.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Is he the fastest guy?
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: No.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: But just watch him play.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Like, he's a football player.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: He is a receiver.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: He knows how to play the position.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Are you familiar with the book Range?
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: I'm not.
- 11:50So it is a book written by David Epstein,
- 11:53who is he's a journalist,
- 11:55nonfiction writer.
- 11:56And the book range is is about athletic development and the
- 12:01premise of the book,
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: which some people have said is unconvincing.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: I found it very compelling was that.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: There is an increasing belief in America,
- 12:12especially that specialization early on is how you get to be an
- 12:17elite athlete.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: And you're seeing kids specialize in sports earlier and younger.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: And that actually the research will show you that for the most part,
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: that is a recipe to peak early.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: And that if you spend all your time focused on a sport,
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: say you play soccer from the age of 10 on...
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: You may you may reach your peak at a younger age.
- 12:43And whereas in Federer is probably the best example of someone
- 12:48who played a lot of
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: different sports and kind of messed around in his teenage years,
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: wasn't the tennis specialist that so many in that sport were increased.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, especially 20 and 30 years ago.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: that having that well-rounded background actually provides a basis.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Even if your skill level at the age of 18,
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: you're not as good of a player that you have more room to grow.
- 13:12Once you focus and specialize,
- 13:14it's something I heard a lot from NFL scouts.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Um,
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: in,
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: in football,
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: the exception tends to be quarterback that everybody,
- 13:23quarterbacks are quarterbacks from a fairly young age and they
- 13:26stay quarterbacks
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: until they're moved to another position.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: Um,
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: When you talked about Roebuck's background as a decathlete,
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: especially in playing other sports,
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: that was the first thing that I thought of.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: I will always...
- 13:41I will always prefer a football recruit who has a well-rounded
- 13:47athletic background
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: when it comes to projecting their future.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: I think they're better off.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: I think it's true in skills.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: I also think it's good in terms of mentality.
- 13:56Isaiah Stanback was obviously,
- 13:59he was the top quarterback recruit in the state his senior
- 14:02year.
- 14:03But he also started on a really good Garfield basketball team,
- 14:06and he was not a scorer.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: He was a rebounder and a defender.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: I think the different roles,
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: like playing other sports where you're not necessarily the folk,
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: I think there's so many things to be gained from it.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: And the other person I thought about as you were talking about him,
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: and it's not quite the same,
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: but Nate Burleson.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Nate Burleson was a Washington recruit under Jim Lambright.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Lambright is fired.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Neuheisel comes in.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: And Neuheisel, it's fairly well known, pulled a scholarship offer.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Kind of decided he's here because he's a legacy recruit.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: We're not doing that anymore.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: And Neuheisel has since said that was clearly a mistake.
- 14:46But one of the things Neuheisel looked at was the other
- 14:49scholarship offers he had.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: And that was actually a huge part of Neuheisel's.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: But Nate, Nate was someone who played multiple sports.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Nate was someone who was a track athlete.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: And
- 14:59Nate was someone who ended up being a third-round pick out of
- 15:02Nevada,
- 15:02Reno.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: So...
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: I think,
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: especially as recruiting has developed,
- 15:10and this isn't me just crapping on the recruiting rankings or
- 15:13it doesn't matter.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: It matters.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: Those are an attempt at an objective evaluation of people's talents.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: The most important thing remains how good that player becomes,
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: how much they can improve over the course of their time in football.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: And I think someone who is a one-sport player
- 15:29and focuses exclusively on that and maybe even one position has
- 15:33less room to grow
- 15:34as they're in college um so i this this opening has prompted me
- 15:40to get fully on
- 15:42board the the the roebuck hype train the the bandwagon i'm
- 15:46firing up the bandwagon
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: anybody wants to jump along i'll be driving
- 15:50Is this where we need to say it's been six practices for crying
- 15:53out loud?
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: We don't even know.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, no.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: This is this is the time of year for unrestrained enthusiasm, Christian.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: We don't need any sort of we'll see what it's like,
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: as Gary Payton would say,
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: when the popcorn's hot.
- 16:05No,
- 16:06we just get to blather on about the beautiful trajectory that
- 16:10is the season ahead.
- 16:13This is a guy Chris Peterson staff would have evaluated and
- 16:17said,
- 16:18we have to have this guy.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: They have to have him.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Look at how he plays football.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: You'd say he was their kind of guy, Danny.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: He's Jed Fish's kind of guy, too, for crying out loud.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: It's an example,
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: I think,
- 16:35of the fact that I think Jed Fish cares more about where
- 16:41Washington winds up in the
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: recruiting rankings than your average head coach does.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Obviously,
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Their offer decisions are not dictated by that.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: I think this is an example of there were other guys in this class.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: They went after hard.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: There were, you know, shoot, look at Washington's receiver class.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: They took five guys.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: And at one point or another, three of them were four star recruits.
- 17:10they felt like they had to have Desmond Roebuck because they
- 17:14looked at his tape and
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: thought he was a really good football player who could help them,
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: you know?
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: So I,
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: I,
- 17:21I think he's an example of trusting your eyes and trusting your
- 17:25evaluation and
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: ignoring some of the rankings and not getting so caught up in,
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Oh,
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: we've got,
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: we've got three blue chippers in this class and,
- 17:36And and also this guy,
- 17:38you know,
- 17:38this wasn't this like this wasn't a plan B thing for them.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: I think they just legit like in their mind,
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: this this guy probably should have been rated a lot higher.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: So I predict and I've kind of felt this way.
- 17:50I felt this way a little bit going into camp,
- 17:52just watching his highlights.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: God, this guy just looks like he knows how to play receiver.
- 17:57I predict you're going to hear plenty from Desmond Roebuck as a
- 18:00receiver at
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Washington over the next few years will be this year.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: He's off to a great start, but particularly 26 and 27.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: I would think he could be a big part of this offense.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: How many true freshmen do you think will play this year?
- 18:14And maybe I should even say,
- 18:16like,
- 18:16how many true freshmen will not redshirt?
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: I've been thinking about this.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: I think it's safe to say John Mills will not.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Gotten some reps with the ones.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Physically, I think he's ready.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: It's not a, like we talked last week, right?
- 18:30It's not a situation of throwing a Nick Harris in there as a
- 18:34true freshman.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I think he looks the part.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Champ Tali Alea is going to be on the depth chart for sure.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 18:43how much he plays like they haven't really given him any number
- 18:45one turns yet
- 18:46during camp so we'll see so like i don't know is he a guy who
- 18:50you definitely want
- 18:51to get in there more than four games if you commit to that do
- 18:54you want to make sure
- 18:55you get him in in every game do you want to make sure he plays
- 18:57on special teams i
- 19:00would i'd probably lean away from red shirting for him to have
- 19:03a hard time seeing
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: radon vines bright red shirt i think he's playing
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: It seems like Desmond Roebuck is on the path toward not red shirting.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: But again, receivers crowded.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: could Austin Simmons as the number four tight end,
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 19:23do you want to play four tight ends enough where you'd burn his
- 19:26red shirt?
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: He's kind of on the cusp probably.
- 19:29Ryland Dillon Allard at safety sure seems like he's a lock to
- 19:34play this year.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: He's been getting turns with the ones during camp.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: But that's with Mikella Steen banged up a little bit right now.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: So when Steen is healthy,
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: I think right this second,
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: your starting duo is probably Mikella Steen and Alex McLaughlin.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: He's really made a move, the transfer from Northern Arizona.
- 19:53We learned yesterday that Alex McLaughlin is up from 185 pounds
- 19:57to 200 this Camp Danny.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:01he texts taylor mays his weight every day yesterday was 201 in
- 20:05case you're
- 20:06wondering uh i love the fact that taylor mays is coaching
- 20:10safeties yeah you can so
- 20:14he joked he said mclaughlin came up and bumped him and said hey
- 20:18i'm 201 today and
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: mays was like i'm 235 yeah i think
- 20:24I wonder how long Taylor's been above 220,
- 20:27because it might be since he was 18 or 19.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: He was a grown man when he was a high school senior.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Bruce Feldman put out his freaks list for The Athletic this week.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: I think Taylor Mays probably would have been on that a few times.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, God, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:46Do you think Washington will play more true freshmen than most
- 20:49Big Ten schools?
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Probably.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: I think, um, I don't know.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: I just think they added some pieces at positions of need.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: And I think there's also,
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: uh,
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: can't,
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: can't wrap up the true freshman saying with,
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: I mentioned Dylan Robinson.
- 21:06I think he's definitely,
- 21:07he's pretty clearly a number two cornerback right now.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I'd imagine they'll find ways to get him on the field,
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: six foot three and 200 pounds and runs a 10,
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: seven.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: you get that guy in the field, right?
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: And so what's that, seven?
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:25and we don't know yet what Zadrius Rainey Saleh's availability
- 21:28is going to be.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: He looks good.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: Him and Jacob,
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: you wouldn't know Jacob Mon,
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: who's coming off an ACL injury by the way he's going through drills.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: You can tell he wants out there badly.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Rainey Saleh looks like he's moving well, too.
- 21:43One of our longtime subscribers,
- 21:46Christopher Ulrich,
- 21:47pointed out in a YouTube comment that,
- 21:49just watching the drills and stuff that rainy sale looks like a
- 21:53like he's going to
- 21:53be a game wrecker and like you could just if you watch the
- 21:56linebackers go through
- 21:57drills and you don't know anything about washington really you
- 21:59he's the guy you'd
- 22:00point to and go who is that like that dude's huge and you know
- 22:04from his high school
- 22:05film how fast and and physical he is so i'm sure they can't
- 22:08wait to get him out
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: there either this this year with the kind of the
- 22:13veteran presence they have with Buddha Alukta linebacker and
- 22:16Devin Bryant has
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: really made a move.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And to get Manu back, that's one more.
- 22:20I think that's still TBD on whether they play him or hold him
- 22:22back for next year.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: But that's another guy who could get involved.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: Devin Hyde's been getting some number two turns at edge rusher.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: That's with Isaiah Ward and Deshaun Lynch both banged up.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: So once they're back,
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: does that push him down far enough to where you could redshirt him?
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: We talked about it before.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: I think Jed Fish just doesn't really think about it with freshmen.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I think it's, hey, who can help the team?
- 22:48And if you're the third best corner and maybe you're only going
- 22:53to play 80 to 100
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: snaps or something like that,
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: like you're not you're not thinking about four years from now.
- 23:01in place of what can this guy do to help the team win,
- 23:04you know,
- 23:05today in this season.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: So I think guys who are borderline,
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: like you saw with Pocky Fina last year,
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: I think there was some effort to,
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: okay,
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: this guy,
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: you could probably find ways to get him into six to eight games,
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: but just as easily keep it at three and let him red shirt.
- 23:20So I think they probably will end up like playing more freshmen
- 23:24than the average,
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: like healthy big 10 program,
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: a school like Purdue,
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: a school like Atlanta,
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Maryland,
- 23:31I'd expect Maryland to see a lot of true freshmen on the field
- 23:33at Maryland,
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: probably starting a true freshman quarterback.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: They had a decent recruiting class.
- 23:41I'm interested in their approach to just putting those guys out
- 23:46there and getting
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: them opportunities.
- 23:49You think back to the way Chris Peterson's staff handled some
- 23:53of this stuff,
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: and they had true freshmen contribute.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: His first year, Buda Baker started at safety day one.
- 24:01His last year,
- 24:01Trent McDuffie was a starting cornerback by the third game,
- 24:06I want to say.
- 24:07And so the guys who really picked it up right away and showed
- 24:15that they belonged
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: and they got their opportunities,
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: but also that same season...
- 24:21There was a lot of clamoring for a certain freshman playmaker
- 24:25at receiver who
- 24:27currently is doing an okay job for the Los Angeles Rams to get
- 24:31on the field,
- 24:32who seemed to catch a touchdown every time they threw it to him
- 24:36in a receiver core
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: that was not terribly talented.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: And they held him back a bit.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know that Jed Fish approaches things the same way.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: The Puka conversation is interesting.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: I was also going to point out, they did also redshirt Byron Murphy.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: And we've gone back and forth,
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: and I know how hard it would have been for him to get on the field.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: And I'll just say,
- 24:59if you're good enough to go to the NFL after three seasons of
- 25:02college football,
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: you don't need a redshirt.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: There's a way they can find for you to do something.
- 25:07They've lost nothing by letting him play,
- 25:11by finding ways to get him into the game.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: And that's hindsight, right?
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Like that is hindsight of saying,
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: if you know now that you're not going to get a red shirt junior season,
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: you're not going to get his third season of football.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: He's not going to stay there for a fourth year.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: But...
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: That being said, I mean, Earl Thomas also left Texas after his true.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: It was his third year, his redshirt sophomore year.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: I probably could have found a way for him to do some stuff as a freshman.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: What happened with Puka?
- 25:39I don't think I've ever because I don't think I'm just
- 25:42influenced by what people
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: thought early on,
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: too.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: I think it was by what I saw when he was on the field.
- 25:49And then after his redshirt freshman season,
- 25:53you didn't see as much from him.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: And then he was essentially kind of recruited over at the position.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, they definitely wanted him.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: He left after the pandemic season.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: He played that pandemic season.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: And then left.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: He had...
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: there was some, some health issues going on with his family back home.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And so I think transferring home to BYU made a lot of sense that way.
- 26:22It also came at a time when like questions about Washington's
- 26:27offensive future were
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: sort of abounding pre 2021.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: And then because they had Romo Dunze and Jalen McMillan and Jalen Polk,
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: It didn't take long.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, that 20 and shoot, what would Puka have done for them in 2021?
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: He'd have just been another wasted weapon like the rest of them.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: But because of how good that trio was in 22 and 23,
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I don't think anybody was thinking about what's Puka Nakua doing at BYU.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: And I think Puka Nakua is way better with the Rams than he was at BYU.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: He was banged up at BYU.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: He missed parts of seasons.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: He put up okay numbers, and he was a playmaker when he was healthy.
- 27:10But he's a guy who's absolutely playing his best football in
- 27:15the pros,
- 27:16which is great for him.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: I just think of it in terms of like,
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: I think if this staff had a Puka Nakua talent at receiver,
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I think you're kind of seeing it with Raiden Vinesbright a little bit.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Not that they're similar players necessarily,
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: but I don't think there'd be a lot of time wasted thinking about like,
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: well,
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: he doesn't really know the offense yet,
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: or there's veterans who...
- 27:43understand their responsibilities on running plays better or
- 27:47who are better
- 27:47blockers or whatever it might be i think it'd just be like oh
- 27:51like this guy's a
- 27:52killer with the ball in his hands every time every time we put
- 27:55it up for him he
- 27:56makes a play and look how tough and good after the catch he is
- 28:00like we have to find
- 28:01a way to get this guy in the field and it doesn't need to be
- 28:05for 60 snaps every
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: week but
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: We're going to feature him.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: We're going to get him targets.
- 28:10Washington's staff under Peterson came to that conclusion
- 28:13halfway through that season.
- 28:14The Arizona game down there where they played horribly in the
- 28:18first half and then
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: blew them out in the second half.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Puka had a huge game,
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: and then he had a big game at home against Oregon,
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: which was a great football game.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: They lost 35-31.
- 28:29Got burned a couple times on defense on some,
- 28:34like,
- 28:36well-executed screen plays.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: And Nakua caught a touchdown and had a couple other big plays.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Jacob Eason had talked about him all season as, like, this dude's legit.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: I trust him already.
- 28:49You could tell there was a feeling of,
- 28:51like,
- 28:51man,
- 28:51get this guy on the field more.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: And then they had a bye week.
- 28:56And then they were playing Utah at home and he got hurt in
- 28:58practice for the season
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: and they lost him.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: So right when they were about to really,
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: he was,
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: I think he was in the starting lineup by then,
- 29:05right when they were about to really step on the gas with Puka
- 29:08Nakua's workload and
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: target share,
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: he got hurt and then pandemic short 2020 season and he was gone.
- 29:16So I,
- 29:17I think about that a little bit when I hear Taylor Mays talk
- 29:22about Rylan Dillard Allen and
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: who was like a 10,
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: eight ish,
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: a hundred meter guy in high school as a junior,
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: supposedly ran a laser timed like sub four,
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: three 40,
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: uh,
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: which is,
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: is kind of crazy.
- 29:39But I asked Taylor Mays about,
- 29:41Hey,
- 29:41like,
- 29:41what did you guys,
- 29:42he was an early enrollee.
- 29:43What'd you guys see from him in January or in spring practices
- 29:47to want to give him
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: these turns with the ones and the twos right now?
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: And he said his athletic ability and his movement skills.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: He has a chance to be a special player.
- 29:56You can turn on the film and regardless of schematically or
- 29:59what you're teaching a
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: player,
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: athletic ability shows or it doesn't show.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: And that's the big highlight quote, right?
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: The athletic ability shows or it doesn't show.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: Naturally, his football movements are awesome.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: He just shows up.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: I think when this coaching staff has a player about whom that is true,
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: that you just can't watch him on the field without...
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: noting that he is an exceptional athlete,
- 30:27they're going to do everything they can to give that guy
- 30:30opportunities to prove
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: that he should play.
- 30:33It's not about forcing him on top of the depth chart without
- 30:36him having to show it
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: on the practice field,
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: without him having to compete against the older guys,
- 30:40without him having to show you that he gets it and he's not
- 30:44going to hurt the team
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: by being out of position and he knows the plays well enough to keep up.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: He's got to prove all that.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: It's about giving him the chances to prove it in camp.
- 30:53And I think there's been the conventional thinking for a long
- 30:57time was that unless
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: you've got a Reggie Williams body type in a freshman,
- 31:03unless you've got a true freshman who is just so far and above
- 31:08more talented than
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: anybody else in his position.
- 31:11you don't throw them in with the ones until there's a certain
- 31:17knowledge base
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: established,
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: right?
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: They have to earn their opportunity just to get the reps.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: Whereas,
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: I think there's some of that now,
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: but I think especially at a program like Washington,
- 31:30where you're trying to flip a roster from what they had last
- 31:34year to what you're
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: going to need to compete in the big 10,
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: um,
- 31:37You want to identify who those elite athletes are and put them
- 31:41in position to show
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: you that they should play right away.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: That's absolutely true.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: But the other part of it is that it's a mindset of the coaches.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: Old school football mentality is that when you bring freshmen in,
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: you beat them down a little bit,
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: right?
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: This is...
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: College football.
- 31:59You're not going to be the most talented athlete every time you
- 32:02step out on the field.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: You've got a lot to learn.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: You need to get bigger and stronger.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: These are grown men who've been here for three and four years.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: That's sort of the old school approach where the assumption,
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: I would say,
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: definitely when I was at Washington,
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: the assumption was freshman would redshirt.
- 32:19It was really unusual in the 90s for and especially the early
- 32:2490s for freshmen not to redshirt.
- 32:26And some of that is that you need to instill some of the work
- 32:31ethic and humility to
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: be part of the program.
- 32:36A more sort of modern or it's Pete Carroll-ish is the you coach
- 32:42to a guy's strengths.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: You don't sit there and tell him like you're not big enough.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: You're not as strong as you need to be.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: If there's something he can do that's exceptional,
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: you start with trying to find a way to use that on the field.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: You do it through.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: Here's what you can do well.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Instead of sort of the the pointing out the inadequacies.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: And I think there is a shift.
- 33:04One of the things I'm most interested about in Jed Fish is
- 33:08seeing what type of
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: coach he is,
- 33:11because clearly some of the things in terms of media access and
- 33:16how he views the
- 33:16program are heavily influenced by Belichick and what he was
- 33:19with the Patriots.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: there's other things that he does.
- 33:23And I would put the playing of young players in this category
- 33:27that are much more
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: reflective of the Pete Carroll,
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: not through fear or intimidation,
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: but excitement.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: And what Taylor Mays is sailing saying about Dillard Allen,
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: which is there are things he does that absolutely jump off you.
- 33:42That's not a,
- 33:43Hey,
- 33:43this young kid's got a lot to learn before we can trust him on
- 33:45the backend.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: That is a man.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: We are so excited to use him.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: And we,
- 33:52That matters both within player development,
- 33:56but also how the players see it.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: And I think from a practical standpoint,
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: in an era where you can transfer easier than ever,
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: I think a team is well served by finding roles.
- 34:09If you can find a role for a guy sooner rather than later,
- 34:13I think you're going to benefit.
- 34:14Even if there are occasions where you end up burning someone's
- 34:18red shirt where,
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: hey,
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: he probably...
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Could have stayed here for five years.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: We're actually costing ourselves here by doing it.
- 34:26I think that the opportunity cost there is the number of guys
- 34:30that you're going to
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: get engaged early on.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: And then I actually think logistically or just from the evidence,
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: I think that's a better way for guys to develop.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: Give them something small they can do early on and grow from there.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: He's getting in fights, too.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: I saw that.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: So you were very diplomatic in this.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: It sounded like that there was a dust up.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: I believe it was Kevin Green, right?
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: That's the receiver.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Green and Dillard Allen.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: Did Dillard Allen light him up?
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: I didn't have a great angle on it.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: It was a red zone snap inside the 10, I think, in the stadium.
- 35:11And DeMond Williams kind of rolled out to his right and
- 35:15scrambled and sort of threw it.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: The play might have even been blown dead,
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: but he sort of threw it,
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: not necessarily up for grabs,
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: but didn't have a great angle on it to make the catch toward green.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: And it went incomplete through the back of the end zone.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: And I guess, yeah, I guess there was some extracurricular contact.
- 35:34And now all of a sudden there's this big scrum like right in
- 35:36front of Touchdown
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Terrace in that east end zone.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: And, you know, staffers are running over there pulling guys off.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: And it's this whole first day of full pads, man.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: That's what happens.
- 35:50And,
- 35:50yeah,
- 35:50Taylor Mays walking out of there with Dillard Allen next to
- 35:54him.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: And Taylor Mays is holding his helmet.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: And lecturing him a bit, I think, on like, hey, that's.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: But then when we asked him about after practice,
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Taylor Mays,
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: which will not surprise you to learn,
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: is fine with most of that.
- 36:09um he's like well you know we got to protect the team and you
- 36:12know make sure that's
- 36:13basically you can't you when i read that quote that we got to
- 36:16take care of each
- 36:17other i was like okay taylor mays is telling him that's exactly
- 36:22what he wants him
- 36:22to do in a game but you can't do that when it's your teammate
- 36:25in practice and i i
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: read that i mean look taylor mays is a freaking hammer on the back end um
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: I was I was excited to read that.
- 36:35And I love trying to decode how fights probably happen in
- 36:41practice because you
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: never know for sure.
- 36:42And there's all sorts of things going on that as an observer,
- 36:45you don't see.
- 36:46I really enjoyed that report in yesterday's yesterday's on bot
- 36:49like that because I
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: was like,
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: oh,
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: oh,
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: there was a fracas.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: There was a fracas.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: And it did.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: It elevated my opinion of Dillard Allen.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: You want your safeties to have a little bit of that.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: He's got that for sure.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: If you read that story,
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Taylor Mays calls him the gnat,
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: he said,
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: because he's just kind of pesky all over the place.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: They got an interesting safety room.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: I think it's definitely better than last year's overall,
- 37:18which might be a little bit of a hot take because I know Cam
- 37:21Fabiculon was one of
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: their top defensive players last year.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: But I think between...
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: The three veterans,
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: Esteen,
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: CJ Christian,
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: and Alex McLaughlin,
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: you've got a pretty good foundation.
- 37:32And then they're going to find ways for Ryland Dillard Allen to
- 37:35help them with his
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: athleticism and his aggression.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: And I think Alex McLaughlin is a different player than they've had.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, 6'2", 200, very aggressive.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Like, you talk about guys...
- 37:51toeing that line and really love hitting and all that i mean i
- 37:54think he's your kind
- 37:55of classic box safety they want all these guys to be able to do
- 37:59both but um cj
- 38:01christian made some nice plays in the backfield uh at tuesday's
- 38:04practice playing a
- 38:05little bit closer to the line of scrimmage so i think they're
- 38:08going to come to be a
- 38:09pretty well-rounded group vince holmes is another really good
- 38:12athlete who's taking
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: turns with the twos
- 38:14I think got about five guys who I think could could help them
- 38:19and could contribute this year.
- 38:21So I think it's a I would imagine that Ryan Walters wanting
- 38:27what he wants out of
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: his DBs and having a history of coaching safeties.
- 38:31I would imagine he probably got here and was pretty pleased
- 38:34with the variety of
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: talent back there.
- 38:38I am really hoping that early in this season something happens
- 38:41that displaces the
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: memory of Vincent Holmes that I have.
- 38:46I do not want the first thing I think of when when his name is
- 38:50mentioned to be Rutgers.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: I would I just I feel bad about myself.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: I would prefer that something else jumped to mind.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: It's what he deserves.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: Such a tough thing.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: He started and played, like, 60-plus snaps against USC last year.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, he did.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: So he's got a chance.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: He's made some plays.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: Yes, he has.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: I think you like that he didn't transfer.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Like,
- 39:16I think if a guy makes a mistake like that early in his career
- 39:19and then for
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: whatever reason,
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: like,
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: thinks he's better off in another program and then leaves,
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: like,
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: that's a bummer.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: Because then it's sealed, right?
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Like, that's going to be your memory of him.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: But he's still got a shot.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: Absolutely he does.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: I'm cheering for him.
- 39:35So yeah,
- 39:35I...
- 39:37Is the over-under for freshmen playing this year like seven?
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: Freshmen not red-shirting?
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Something like seven?
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: The 2-0 linemen?
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Dillard Allen?
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: Vines Bright?
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: Roebuck?
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Dylan Robinson?
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Like maybe Rainey Saleh?
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's six and a half?
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Six and a half.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: You're going to take the over or the under?
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: Hmm...
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: I was one off last year.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: I correctly predicted all the guys who didn't redshirt wouldn't redshirt,
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: and I also thought Pocky Finau wouldn't redshirt,
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: but he did.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: So I was one too aggressive on my guess last year.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: You were one high.
- 40:17So I'll recompensate and go take the under,
- 40:21but would not be surprised if the over hit either.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: And then what do you think?
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: I'll be curious.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: It'll be interesting to watch how the rest of it goes in the Big Ten,
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: how other schools are,
- 40:33because you certainly are going to have programs that look to
- 40:37sort of have
- 40:37collective growing pains where we're going to play a bunch of
- 40:40young guys together
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: and let them learn together.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: believing that that's going to pay off two or three years down.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: But Washington's not at that position right now.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: That would have been more true last year than it is this year,
- 40:54where I think this year the decisions about redshirting will be
- 40:59entirely premised
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: on sort of ability and development.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: Is this guy ready for that?
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: Do we want him to play this early?
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 41:07And I think we're going to get to a point where there's no more
- 41:09redshirting.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: Like, I think that's coming where in college football.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: Where there's just a five year eligibility clock period.
- 41:19And you've got five years to play however many seasons you can
- 41:22fit in those five years.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: And once the five years are up, you're done.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: It's so funny because then it'll come,
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: but like,
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: but I have my five years,
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: but I got hurt in one of those years.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: So I need a sixth year.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: Everybody's going to be like, okay, that's fair.
- 41:34And then somebody's going to be like,
- 41:35one of those five years was at a junior college.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: That shouldn't count anymore.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: Then they'll be like, oh, okay, you're right.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: That's not going to count.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: I just think,
- 41:42I think we're more likely to have indefinite college
- 41:44eligibility than we are to
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: have a firm five-year clock.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: I know I played in 15 games last year.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:53But five of our games came against teams that were coming off
- 41:56of bye weeks.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: That's got to be worth something.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: I played in all 15, but it was only on special teams.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: And that's not fair because this coach is a hoser.
- 42:06There was a kid who got an extra year of eligibility after
- 42:10playing in a full season
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: by arguing that because he was coming off of an ACL injury,
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: I think it was,
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: he wasn't the same player.
- 42:19And so that season should not count against his eligibility,
- 42:22and they gave it to him.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: And I just thought,
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: I'm like,
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: if that's what we're doing,
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: then there just shouldn't be any eligibility limits.
- 42:28You should just let guys play until they don't want to or until
- 42:32the school won't
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: have them anymore.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: I'm not going to...
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: I was going to say I'm not going to be cynical about this,
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: but I don't even think I need to offer that preface.
- 42:40Those decisions are based largely on how likely the NCAA feels
- 42:44it's going to be sued.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: That's my firm belief.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: And are we going to get just absolutely hosed in court?
- 42:51I think,
- 42:53especially post-COVID,
- 42:54that all of those things have gone out the window.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: And
- 42:58I've screamed and cried about how I think there should at least
- 43:02be an age limit or something.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: I honestly, I don't know what you do about it.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: I don't know what's fair.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: I don't have,
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: I don't have any opinions on any of that anymore,
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: given the current state of the game.
- 43:11I'm glad you mentioned the court thing because the NCAA has
- 43:13been winning recently.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: These suits around, Oh, I, one of my years of eligibility was a D two.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: That shouldn't count or D three.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: That shouldn't count.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Or you're, you're suppressing my, um,
- 43:28You're inflicting undue harm against me by suppressing my
- 43:31earning potential.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Those cases are not winning.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Like, the NCAA is prevailing in those cases, by and large.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: So there is judicial support for the idea of a limited eligibility clock.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: So I would...
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: I've kind of come around on,
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: because I was predicting the same thing,
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: like,
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: oh,
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: they're just going to keep losing in court.
- 43:56The Juco thing paved the way for,
- 43:57like,
- 43:58we're just going to have unlimited eligibility.
- 44:01I think it's more likely we're going to get to what Chris
- 44:03Peterson was arguing for
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: for years,
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: by the way,
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: which was just a five-year clock.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: Like,
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: take the burden off the coaches to try to manage,
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: like,
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: well,
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: this guy's good enough to be,
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: our,
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: like,
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: end on...
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: field goal protect and field goal block.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: And he's like our eighth offensive lineman,
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: but I don't want to waste a whole year having him do that.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: So let's red shirt him, but let's find four games for him to play in.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Like,
- 44:34I think coaches would love to not have to think about that and
- 44:36just manage their
- 44:37roster the way that NFL team would and play whoever is the
- 44:41right guy for that spot
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: in that moment in that game.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: And don't worry about how many other games they've played.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: I think we're getting to that.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: It seems like there's momentum for that.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: Clearly, I'm not a lawyer.
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: I have no background in that at all.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: It has been exceptionally weird,
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: however,
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: for me to hold these two conflicting realities in my head.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: On the one hand,
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: you have the NFL,
- 45:02which has set a limit that no player can enter its league until
- 45:07they are three
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: years removed from their date of high school graduation,
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: which has withstood a number of legal challenges.
- 45:14And there was that one little brief flip with Maurice Claret
- 45:17where it looked like
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: it was going to go away.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: But they've held that, which frankly seems slightly un-American to me.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: You're an adult, but you're not old enough to play in our league.
- 45:27contrast that with the other two things where the NCAA was just
- 45:31routinely...
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: You got Pavia saying,
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: ah,
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: two years of junior college shouldn't count.
- 45:36The NCAA,
- 45:37like the college eligibility limit,
- 45:39seems fairly straightforward.
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: Seems...
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: And they would keep just getting smashed.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: They're like, all right, everybody gets that extra year because of COVID.
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: And Diego's Juco doesn't count against him.
- 45:53Now Washington's going to lose a quarterback that they didn't
- 45:56know they were going
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: to get to keep.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: I wondered if it was maybe just...
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: the price of legal staff of representation,
- 46:04the retainer size between what the NFL was paying and what the
- 46:07NCAA is paying,
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: but pointing out that the NCAA has started to rack up some wins,
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: maybe means sanity is returning to it.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: On the Thaddeus Dixon thing,
- 46:16I should point out that there are six practices to Cario Davis
- 46:19looks pretty good.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 46:21We saw him in the spring too,
- 46:23obviously,
- 46:23but he is,
- 46:24he is having a very good camp.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: I loved the way Thaddeus Dixon played last year.
- 46:30If Thaddeus Dixon was going to be unhappy playing nickel,
- 46:34I think that that's silly.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: And I hope he finds happiness at his new school.
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: The objections that he had to that, I did not find to be very compelling.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: And they did not strike a chord.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: I did not feel he was getting done wrong.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: I think it was a particular bummer for Husky fans just because
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: He was such a dog, so to speak.
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: He was, and he loved the legacy of the DBs.
- 47:03SPEAKER_02: I loved how he played, and I wish him the best.
- 47:06SPEAKER_02: But when it came down to it, I was like, I don't know, man.
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: You're going to play a ton,
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: and I can get how you don't like the feel of that,
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: but if you really want to leave over that,
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: I wish you nothing but the best.
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: But I don't think Jed Fish and his staff screwed that up at all.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Nickel is interesting with them right now.
- 47:26I'd have bet a lot of money that Rashawn Clark had that wrapped
- 47:29up after spring in
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: the last couple days.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: It's mostly been Leroy Bryant in there with the ones.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: Leroy Bryant!
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: God damn it, Leroy.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: He's a good player.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: He was kind of the...
- 47:48the pseudo four star in washington's 2023 class it was actually
- 47:52a three star but
- 47:53everybody was like watch his tape and watch some tape but some
- 47:56of the like four
- 47:58star guys that they're supposedly missing out on and who's
- 48:01actually better so the
- 48:03previous staff was really high on him and he's also their like
- 48:07number three corner
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: right now three four ish depending on like
- 48:11whether you'd go with him or Rashawn Clark outside if one of
- 48:14those top two guys got hurt.
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: But they're giving him a long look at nickel and he's made some plays.
- 48:19And I wonder if that spot is a little more competitive than we
- 48:23might've thought it
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: would be coming out of spring.
- 48:25Or this is another thing that I haven't really touched on like
- 48:28a ton in my practice reports.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: I think Ryan Walters just really wants to see everybody.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I think he wants to see everyone he has at his disposal for,
- 48:37with the exception of some true freshmen who just clearly like
- 48:40aren't there yet physically.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: And not just in like,
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: okay,
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: the threes are going to go against the threes,
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: but like,
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: I'm going to put some guys out there,
- 48:47try some different combinations in the secondary with the ones
- 48:50and with the twos
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: and against the first team offense and against the second team offense.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: and just see what I have and see what sticks.
- 48:57SPEAKER_01: Because I do think he has a similar mindset to Steve Belichick,
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: where it's like,
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: it's not even just who are the best 11,
- 49:06but it's who's the best 11 in this particular down in distance
- 49:11and part of the
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: field.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: And who can give us something interesting
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: in this particular coverage against this particular style of offense.
- 49:20And I'm not going to know any of this if I don't put these guys
- 49:23in position to like
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: get some real reps against big 10 starter caliber players in practice.
- 49:28So in some ways I'm like hesitant to draw sweeping conclusions
- 49:34about some of the
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: personnel groupings we see at practice relative to like,
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: what's the depth chart going to look like.
- 49:39But I,
- 49:40I think like Belichick,
- 49:41you'll probably see them play a lot of guys.
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: Are you going to watch UNC's defense at all this year or UNC's program?
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: Where I can, I can't say I'm like terribly interested.
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, same.
- 49:55SPEAKER_02: I'm surprised by that.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: There's a couple of players there that I really liked.
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: I love Kamari House.
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: I don't have negative feelings about Steve Belichick.
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: I thought I thought what he did with the team was interesting last year.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: But I also didn't have this really strong feel.
- 50:10And maybe that's a commentary on how I feel about Ryan Walters
- 50:14that I'm kind of
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: like,
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: well,
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: of course,
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: Steve's going to go coach with his dad.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: And I'm really interested.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: I think they got a really good hire as their DC.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: I'm interested to see what happened.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Or maybe I'm growing up.
- 50:28Is it possible that I'm getting more mature about these sort of
- 50:31things where I'm
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: just like,
- 50:32SPEAKER_02: I mean,
- 50:33SPEAKER_02: I was wishing Thaddeus Dixon well.
- 50:35Now I'm feeling like,
- 50:36yeah,
- 50:36I don't have any bones to pick about the Belichick thing.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: I'm not even...
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: I don't even think I'm eager for them to not be that good.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: I'd be surprised if they're really good.
- 50:45SPEAKER_02: But, yeah.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: Is this what maturity feels like?
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: It could be.
- 50:50I just think the Belichick sour feelings and the players
- 50:54transferring was a very,
- 50:56SPEAKER_01: very offseason thing.
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: That was a very, like...
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: This was not a fun season for Washington.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: It's finishing in the Sun Bowl.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: Everyone knows that your defensive coordinator is leaving.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: You don't know yet that they were...
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: Well,
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: no,
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: you did know they were replacing him with Ryan Walters at that point.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: That had been reported.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 51:17so I think it was,
- 51:20look,
- 51:21it's we're,
- 51:21we're at the very beginning of a very long off season.
- 51:24And the very first thing that happens to Washington is their
- 51:28defensive coordinator
- 51:29leaves and four of Washington's players transfer to the school
- 51:34he's going to.
- 51:35And two of them were guys who absolutely would have been dudes
- 51:39on this team.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: More house and that is Dixon.
- 51:44SPEAKER_01: And you haven't brought in,
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: maybe I'm getting the timeline wrong.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: You haven't necessarily brought in all of your portal pieces yet.
- 51:54So like,
- 51:54you don't know exactly what the,
- 51:56you knew Davis was coming,
- 51:57right?
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: You knew Davis was coming, but yeah, all the portal wasn't settled.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: So it's like, that's what was happening.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: There were no more games.
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: That was, that was the news of the day.
- 52:10And so there's all this room and all this time for people to
- 52:12sit around and be pissed about it.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: And I think like,
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: the whole,
- 52:16the Belichick of it all probably contributed to some of the
- 52:20feelings right here.
- 52:21You brought in this,
- 52:22you brought in this guy's son to be your defensive coordinator.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: And like the fan base, I think was pretty on board.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: And I think he did an okay job,
- 52:29but like you made such a big deal about how the legendary dad
- 52:31was around your
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: program all the time.
- 52:33And now he's starting his own program and talking about them as
- 52:36the 33rd NFL team
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: when that's language that you've used.
- 52:39And we know how much time he spent watching your program to see
- 52:42how the NFL
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: approach would work at college.
- 52:45SPEAKER_01: It might have been part of what convinced him that it could.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: And now he's going to go do the same thing, but with...
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: your defensive coordinator, who's his kid.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: And oh, by the way, they're going to take four players from you.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: And oh, by the way, it's two guys who the fan base really, really liked.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: And so I think that all just...
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: But when you take a step back,
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: it's like,
- 53:04SPEAKER_01: well,
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: yeah,
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: kid's going to go work for his dad.
- 53:08SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 53:09SPEAKER_01: And well, you recruited over the top of Thaddeus Dixon at Outside Corner.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: You went out and got your guy from Arizona.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: And so that kind of makes sense.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: And I don't think...
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: North Carolina poached Kamori House.
- 53:22I think Kamori House probably thought he could command a little
- 53:26bit more money
- 53:27based on the freshman year that he had and was going to try to
- 53:30go get that
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: somewhere else anyway.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: Like,
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: I think he was probably headed to the portal,
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: whether there was a Belichick at North Carolina or not.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: That was my read on it.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: That was my read on it.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'm wrong.
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'm wrong.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: I think you'd really like to have held on to a talent like Peyton Waters.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: I think he showed you a lot last year.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: But...
- 53:51I mean,
- 53:51is anybody talking about,
- 53:52oh,
- 53:53my God,
- 53:53Washington doesn't have Peyton Waters anymore?
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: No.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: Again, you went out and got two veteran safeties.
- 53:58SPEAKER_01: You recruited over the top of him with veteran guys.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: He was going to be a sophomore.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: You obviously love Ryland Dillard Allen.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: You kind of replaced Peyton Waters with Ryland Dillard Allen,
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: except maybe you think he has even more athletic upside.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: And then the fourth guy was Jason Robinson,
- 54:13who redshirted for you as a receiver at a position where I
- 54:18think you feel pretty
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: good about your young talent.
- 54:20So I think months have passed and nobody around Washington is
- 54:26really thinking about
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: the Belichick thing anymore.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: That's just kind of my read on it.
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: I would also say that looking back,
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: I think the one year of Belichick,
- 54:35both Steve and Bill being around the program was a net positive
- 54:40for Washington.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: I think having Bill come and do those events,
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: which he did,
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: and he was way more involved and around than Pete Carroll ever was.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: Like, his presence was... Way more.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: Like, he actually, I think, was an asset.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: And, look, it's a late coaching change.
- 54:58Were you going to get a better defensive coordinator than Steve
- 55:01Belichick?
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't really think so.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: I think he did a fairly good job.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: yeah, it's, it's, it stinks that house and Dixon ended up leaving.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: Like those are the two guys primarily.
- 55:11And because they were the ones I saw the most,
- 55:14but I think it's a fair exchange.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: I, I, I take it.
- 55:19SPEAKER_02: I do it again.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: Dang it.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: I wrote as much before the transfers,
- 55:25SPEAKER_01: like after the,
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: the,
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: it was clear that Steve was going to leave for North Carolina,
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: but before the transfers.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: And I kind of, I kind of thought I'm like, did I jump the gun?
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: Like,
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: would I change that take now?
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: And I really wouldn't like,
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: I did not see that as North Carolina poached a bunch of Washington guys.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: I just, I think that there were extenuating circumstances.
- 55:46SPEAKER_01: I just don't like,
- 55:48I think Jed fish is being totally genuine when he says there
- 55:51are no hard feelings
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: whatsoever.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: Like I got all, still got all the respect in the world for those guys.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: I wish him the best.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: I think he'd rather have Kamori house on his roster than not.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: But I don't think he's swallowing it to say that.
- 56:06SPEAKER_02: I would tend to agree with you.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: Also, no one is going to go against Belichick.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: Well, no.
- 56:13Nobody's going to say,
- 56:14like,
- 56:14yeah,
- 56:15I got a bone to pick with the Sith Overlord.
- 56:17SPEAKER_02: I'd like to see if I can hold a grudge as long as that guy does.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: Because if it comes to pettiness, like, that guy is always going to win.
- 56:24SPEAKER_01: You know who might, though?
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: Ian?
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: IP McFarlane.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: He sent us a video this week.
- 56:32SPEAKER_02: Hell yeah.
- 56:33SPEAKER_02: Do you think everybody's ready for that?
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: They're not, but they, they're going to get ready.
- 56:37SPEAKER_02: I'm going to be like the rapper's hype, man.
- 56:40SPEAKER_02: Are you ready to see IP McFarlane?
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: No, man.
- 56:43SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're ready.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're, are you ready?
- 56:45SPEAKER_02: Get your hands up.
- 56:47SPEAKER_02: Get your hands up.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: First recording on video,
- 56:53which I'm pretty sure you don't want me to do yet because
- 56:56there's no way you're
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: going to be able to edit this in.
- 57:03it's harder because while my face is hardly camera ready it can
- 57:09be contorted in
- 57:10some really stupid ways and my sound quality probably isn't
- 57:14that great because I'm
- 57:16SPEAKER_00: recording in my office so I could have
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: the 1991 National Championship front page behind me.
- 57:24And if we turn,
- 57:26we'll pass a mighty University of Puget Sound football helmet.
- 57:30You can also see in the background the Seattle Times Sports
- 57:33page on draft day,
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: doing a side-by-side of Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning.
- 57:38SPEAKER_00: The reason that that is framed in my office is because my father,
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: a longtime friend of Mike Price's,
- 57:47bet me my college tuition that leaf would have a better career
- 57:52than manning which
- 57:55the jury is still out on my question this week is probably more
- 58:00for cc we saw bruce
- 58:04SPEAKER_00: feldman's freaks list this week 101 names
- 58:10who on the Washington football team was left off unfortunately
- 58:16everyone was but who
- 58:17deserved to be on that team or more simply stated who are the
- 58:23freak athletes on
- 58:24this football team maybe not the best players but the ones that
- 58:28have an athletic
- 58:28SPEAKER_00: peak that no one else can match or
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: If you want a different question,
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: you can do what you did last week,
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: completely ignore the premise of the question I asked you,
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: and answer some other question that I don't quite know what it was.
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Jim,
- 58:50SPEAKER_00: whose last name will remain anonymous,
- 58:52who I just had a phone call with this morning to go over his
- 58:56new business idea,
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: which is a fun,
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: creative endeavor that I wish him all the luck in the world on.
- 59:03um i wish you guys a good week go dogs so i i went back and
- 59:09listened to last week's
- 59:11episode and i don't know what ian's getting at because i feel
- 59:13like he asked what we
- 59:14were looking forward to this year and that's what we talked
- 59:18about was it not i
- 59:18think we were more general enthusiasm i think he might have
- 59:21been looking forward to
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: a specific thing i think he was like i don't want the hype
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: Well, far be it for me to question IP McFarland.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: Also, do you think Jim called him because of say who say pod?
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: I think we can only assume so.
- 59:41SPEAKER_02: So that would be that that would be the business.
- 59:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that would be the first.
- 59:45SPEAKER_01: I think that would be the first thing we've done for Ian.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: It would.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: We will answer his question directly this time.
- 59:54SPEAKER_01: I'll note if you read,
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: if you did not read Bruce Feldman's freaks list,
- 59:58SPEAKER_01: Parker Brailsford checked in at number 20.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_01: Over at Alabama.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: And at first I was like, really?
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: But then well,
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: guy that size,
- 1:00:06like excelling as a starting center at Alabama probably has to
- 1:00:10be a freak strength
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: wise,
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: at least.
- 1:00:13So at Washington,
- 1:00:17I suppose you might throw DeMond Williams in the conversation.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: Mm hmm.
- 1:00:25I think down the road you could be talking about Dylan Robinson
- 1:00:28as that kind of guy.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: You mentioned earlier he's all of 6'3",
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_01: 200,
- 1:00:32and I assume he'll be bigger in a couple years with track times
- 1:00:38around like 10.7 in
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_01: the 100 meter,
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: which is crazy speed for that size.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_01: Zadrius Rainey-Saleh, perhaps.
- 1:00:49I think Jed Fish said Dylan Robinson already has the top broad
- 1:00:51jump on the team,
- 1:00:52too.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_01: Ooh, I love a broad jump measurement.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_01: Rylan Dillard-Allen has that kind of speed.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_01: Maybe some of the young offensive linemen.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_01: Um...
- 1:01:06The one guy on that defensive front we talked about last week
- 1:01:10who gets associated
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: with the word freak already is Ontario Thompson.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, what about Durf?
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: What about Durf?
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah,
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_01: so Zach Durfee probably is...
- 1:01:21I think he is the most complete package on the team in terms of
- 1:01:29athletic ability...
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: slash ideal size for the position he plays.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: There's other guys who fit that description too.
- 1:01:40Denzel Boston being 6'4 and being the kind of athlete he is is
- 1:01:44impressive.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: There's no doubt.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: They have good size and speed elsewhere.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: I think Durfee, he says he's leaned up.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_01: He's like low 250s right now.
- 1:01:58um he looks like a dude i mean he looks he just watched him out
- 1:02:03there lining up at
- 1:02:04edge rusher um with that defense going against the number one
- 1:02:08offense he's he
- 1:02:09stands out physically and he's i think he's had a good camp too
- 1:02:13i mean you could
- 1:02:13see him getting in the backfield and um you know i've written
- 1:02:18about guys just rave
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: about him in the weight room talk about
- 1:02:24Like how even going back to like his first year when the NCAA
- 1:02:26wouldn't let him play
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: and what he was doing on scout team.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: And he's smashing personal records in the weight room.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_01: And guys were just like, whoa, who is this guy?
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: So I think he'd be a candidate.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: Durfee was asked this question at media day or a similar question.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_01: And he submitted Adam Mohamed.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: I think what he...
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: what he's,
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: the way he put it was,
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: he's like,
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_01: I don't even think Adam Mohammed knows how much he can lift.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_01: They just put weights on the bar and he does it.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: And he's never not been able to do whatever they put on the bar.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: That's interesting.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_01: He's like,
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: I don't even know if Adam Mohammed has a Benchmax because he just,
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: they just throw weight on there.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: And he just like, he's like, it's insane.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_01: He's, you wouldn't believe how strong he is.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: So that's Zach Durfee's take on, on Adam Mohammed.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_01: And like,
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_01: Adam Mohamed has a... He's going to have a role this year.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: I think he's a year away from obviously being a featured back.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: So maybe going into next year,
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: if he has a solid year as their RB2,
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: maybe going into his junior year,
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: that's when you start to see Jed Fish...
- 1:03:42do some stumping behind the scenes for,
- 1:03:45for Adam Muhammad being included on the freaks list.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: he's,
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: I don't think he's going to like set any speed records necessarily,
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_01: but in terms of like physique and strength,
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: I don't know that there will be a ton of running backs who look like him.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_02: Have you ever seen the dude on the internet?
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_02: He's Eastern European.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_02: He's a professional weightlifter.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_02: I can't remember what his category is, but he's a leaner dude.
- 1:04:09And he dresses up like a janitor and goes to these gyms and
- 1:04:14will go up to the
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_02: different big muscle dudes who are huge deadlift numbers.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_02: And he'll say stuff like, why are you guys using fake weights?
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have seen that.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_02: It's such a great bit.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_02: He's got a 32 kg mop.
- 1:04:31like when he hands it to him they're like whoa this thing's so
- 1:04:33heavy i could see
- 1:04:35adam muhammad having a maybe he could maybe he could have a
- 1:04:38social media career
- 1:04:39such as that yeah that'd be fun i get the sense he's scotty
- 1:04:44graham described him as
- 1:04:45like an old soul humor wise oh really like he's into like
- 1:04:49airplane style humor like
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: leslie really airplane style humor yeah interesting
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: I'm intrigued.
- 1:04:57I don't know if he meant specifically that movie or just like
- 1:05:00that kind of brand of
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: humor,
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: but very popular guy.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_01: Everybody loves him.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: So shoot.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_01: I, you know what?
- 1:05:09I'm not going to watch the Huskies practice again until next
- 1:05:13Tuesday because
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_01: they're off today as we record this.
- 1:05:18And tomorrow I am flying to Anchorage,
- 1:05:20Alaska for a,
- 1:05:22a good pals bachelor party.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_01: for three nights.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: I'll return Sunday and then the Huskies are off Monday.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: So,
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: um,
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: I won't be,
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: I was,
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: it was occurring to me as I was driving home on Tuesday afternoon,
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: like,
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: I'm not actually not coming back up here for a week.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: I will have, uh, a cavalcade, a series of, uh,
- 1:05:43freelancers out there for me there will be practice reports at
- 1:05:47onmontlake.com um
- 1:05:49probably no video though like i said in my last post unless
- 1:05:51it's of glaciers and
- 1:05:53and halibut fishing um which i've never done before by the way
- 1:05:57oh you've never done
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_01: halibut
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_02: Halibut's weird.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: They don't fight much.
- 1:06:01The first time I caught a halibut,
- 1:06:03I thought I was reeling up a very heavy paper bag.
- 1:06:07And then they're also I mean,
- 1:06:08they're a weird looking fish because their eye rotates around.
- 1:06:11So they're a bottom fish and they've got this big flap and then
- 1:06:14they stay.
- 1:06:16you bring them in the boat and they'll flop like 45,
- 1:06:2160 minutes after you catch them.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_02: They'll still kind of like have these Twitch reactions.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_02: I went to Alaska when I was,
- 1:06:27I think in second grade for the first time when we caught
- 1:06:29halibut and I was,
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_02: I was freaked out by him.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_01: A delicious fish.
