- 0:30Speaker 3: All right, guys, welcome back, Earn your Lisia. This is
- 0:33Speaker 3: a very highly requested episode, special episode for a few
- 0:37Speaker 3: different reasons, so.
- 0:37Speaker 4: We're looking forward to it.
- 0:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 0:39Speaker 3: You know, one thing is that we're not your typical
- 0:41Speaker 3: business podcast. We cover everything. We cover a lot of
- 0:44Speaker 3: things that deal with pop culture that your typical business
- 0:47Speaker 3: podcast don't don't talk about. And one thing, I mean,
- 0:50Speaker 3: we can't talk about pop culture without talking about the
- 0:53Speaker 3: sneaker culture. Sneaker culture is it's actually a billion dollar industry.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Two billion dollar industry they said, within the next ten
- 0:59Speaker 3: years is going to be a six billion dollar industry.
- 1:03Speaker 3: And you know, it's just crazy to see sneakers become
- 1:06Speaker 3: actual commodities and a lot of it's like assets, Like
- 1:09Speaker 3: people are trading sneakers, buhying sneakers holding up.
- 1:11Speaker 4: That's how people should look at them. They're some of them.
- 1:13Speaker 6: I mean, they're wearable, but they all commodities in a sense, right,
- 1:16Speaker 6: because the value goes up and down depending on the
- 1:18Speaker 6: rarity of it.
- 1:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:19Speaker 3: So you know, when we do episodes, we try to
- 1:22Speaker 3: get experts in the field to talk about these different
- 1:25Speaker 3: subject matters, and so we knew he's all right, We're
- 1:28Speaker 3: going to do a sneaker episode on sneakers for all
- 1:30Speaker 3: the sneakerheads out there, sneaker collectives, and you know, I
- 1:34Speaker 3: was thinking, like who could we bring on? And then
- 1:35Speaker 3: I'm like, you know what, I actually know one of
- 1:38Speaker 3: the leaders in the field when it comes to to
- 1:42Speaker 3: the whole sneaker culture.
- 1:43Speaker 7: And it's crazy. It's crazy how life works.
- 1:45Speaker 3: So I knew him for years that we actually went
- 1:49Speaker 3: to high school together and went to prep school together,
- 1:52Speaker 3: and Winshington Weinhington, Massachusetts, the winch So it's crazy, like
- 1:56Speaker 3: we always talk about networking and the power networking and
- 1:58Speaker 3: you never know. So me and Mike went to high
- 2:01Speaker 3: school together. He's probably like seventeen, eighteen years old, and
- 2:04Speaker 3: we was both from New York at the time, and
- 2:06Speaker 3: we went to this this little well, it wasn't it
- 2:09Speaker 3: was little as far as the amount of students that
- 2:12Speaker 3: was there, but it was a nationally ranked program, like
- 2:14Speaker 3: one of the top prep schools in the country at
- 2:15Speaker 3: that time, and all these D one players. Shout out
- 2:18Speaker 3: to Francisco Garcia, shout out to Curtis Stintson.
- 2:22Speaker 7: Oh, shout out to who else was there? My man
- 2:24Speaker 7: from Australia, Mike, what.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Was we have? Martin Ed, Martin Edi to Mario.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Yeah, So it was like it was like twelve high
- 2:35Speaker 3: level D one players and so it was crazy. So me, like,
- 2:39Speaker 3: you know, coming from just a regular public school Westchester,
- 2:43Speaker 3: Like you know what I'm saying, I definitely hadn't played
- 2:46Speaker 3: on that level of competition before.
- 2:47Speaker 7: Like it was crazy for me to even be in
- 2:49Speaker 7: that environment.
- 2:50Speaker 3: And I made friends with pretty much everybody, but a
- 2:53Speaker 3: few of the guys was like really, really, I became
- 2:55Speaker 3: close with and my man. Mike was one of my
- 2:58Speaker 3: closest friends up there when I was in prep school.
- 3:00Speaker 3: We always worked out. He had a tremendous work ethic.
- 3:02Speaker 3: He always was shooting jump shots all the time. We
- 3:04Speaker 3: used to go to the gym at like four o'clock
- 3:06Speaker 3: in the morning, two o'clock in the morning, me and Andrew.
- 3:09Speaker 3: We actually did Andrews podcast to shout out to Drew. So,
- 3:13Speaker 3: you know, a few years after, you know, we leave
- 3:15Speaker 3: and we all go our separate ways in life. And
- 3:19Speaker 3: probably like six or seven years ago, before I even
- 3:22Speaker 3: got on social media or anything like that, I'm thinking
- 3:25Speaker 3: about this is the first time I'm really having about YouTube,
- 3:27Speaker 3: like how you can make money on YouTube. I didn't
- 3:29Speaker 3: really know about nothing like that. So I'm just on
- 3:31Speaker 3: YouTube and I forgot how I got turned on to
- 3:33Speaker 3: the situation. But I realized that Mike had developed an
- 3:36Speaker 3: alter ego called mister Phomer Simpson.
- 3:38Speaker 4: It's crazy because I said, Yo, I know this guy.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I was watching this guy that you told me you knew.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Hi.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, you know this dude followed him. I'm
- 3:46Speaker 4: passionate about.
- 3:46Speaker 3: This, and then he had like at that time he
- 3:48Speaker 3: had like one hundred two hundred thousand subscribers years ago,
- 3:52Speaker 3: way before YouTube was really a wave. Like he was
- 3:55Speaker 3: early on YouTube and I'm like, oh, he's doing his thing,
- 3:58Speaker 3: and he was like making these videos about sneakers, and
- 4:00Speaker 3: I still like, yo, why is he doing sneaker reviews?
- 4:03Speaker 3: Like you know what I'm saying, Like I didn't really
- 4:04Speaker 3: understand because I'm still not really a sneaker, had choice
- 4:07Speaker 3: of sneaker at god hard. But then as the years
- 4:09Speaker 3: went on, I realized how big of an industry sneakers were,
- 4:12Speaker 3: and then I realized how big of a brand he has.
- 4:14Speaker 3: So yes, today he has five hundred and thirty eight
- 4:17Speaker 3: YouTube subscribers, one hundred and forty thousand followers on Instagram,
- 4:22Speaker 3: And like I said, I mean, if you're in a
- 4:23Speaker 3: sneaker culture, you mentioned his name, they know who he is.
- 4:26Speaker 3: So it was fitting that, like I told him, I
- 4:29Speaker 3: haven't we haven't actually had a conversation in probably over
- 4:32Speaker 3: ten years, Like we ain't speak. I haven't seen him
- 4:35Speaker 3: face to face in a long time. And now we
- 4:38Speaker 3: have one of the top business podcasts in the world.
- 4:40Speaker 3: He's one of the top sneaker influences in the world.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And yeah, humble beginnings from a little pre school in Massachusetts. So,
- 4:48Speaker 3: first and foremost, Mike Man, thank you for joining us.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I appreciate it, Man, thanks for having me.
- 4:53Speaker 5: I'm really excited. You know.
- 4:55Speaker 8: I've been following what you guys have been doing and
- 4:58Speaker 8: love everything that you're doing.
- 4:59Speaker 5: So it's an honor to be here man.
- 5:01Speaker 7: So yeah, for sure. So all right, let's get in.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Let's get into it before we're gonna talk about the
- 5:05Speaker 3: sneaker culture and business.
- 5:07Speaker 7: At what point because I didn't know you was a
- 5:09Speaker 7: sneakerhead like that in school.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I know you had sneakers, but at one point, because
- 5:13Speaker 3: like I said, you're early on and kind of like
- 5:15Speaker 3: really on the cutting edge of like bringing a sneaker
- 5:18Speaker 3: culture to YouTube and the web and all that, how
- 5:21Speaker 3: did this develop into actually you building an online community
- 5:25Speaker 3: a business like but that just like happened by accident.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Like what was the point where you say, you know what,
- 5:30Speaker 3: this is more than just me liking sneakers, I'm an
- 5:32Speaker 3: build a community.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Yeah, so it kind of did happen on an accident
- 5:36Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 5:37Speaker 8: So growing up, like I didn't say, oh, hey I'm
- 5:41Speaker 8: a I'm a sneakerhead. I'm just I'm from New York City,
- 5:43Speaker 8: and sneakers are part of the culture. You know, even
- 5:47Speaker 8: at that prep school, right like when we had to wear,
- 5:50Speaker 8: you know, a tie and a blazer, like we still
- 5:53Speaker 8: tried to get a little fresh sometimes, you know. So
- 5:57Speaker 8: I just grew up, you know, loving sneakers and wearing
- 6:00Speaker 8: sneakers and being hoopers before anything else, I think, growing
- 6:04Speaker 8: up and you know Penny Hardaway and loving his sneakers,
- 6:07Speaker 8: and you know Iverson and loving his sneakers, and so
- 6:11Speaker 8: it was kind of just organic as far as that goes.
- 6:15Speaker 8: I was. It was hoop over everything for me. And
- 6:19Speaker 8: so I had played overseas a little bit for a
- 6:21Speaker 8: few seasons, and I actually had knee surgery and so
- 6:25Speaker 8: I was just laid up.
- 6:27Speaker 5: I was just at the crib and my brother was
- 6:30Speaker 5: as well.
- 6:30Speaker 8: We were living together. We both had knee surgery. Just
- 6:32Speaker 8: kind of the way it went. And I wasn't a
- 6:37Speaker 8: YouTube guy at all. I didn't watch YouTube, and I
- 6:40Speaker 8: forget what I was looking for on the internet or
- 6:44Speaker 8: on YouTube, but I saw a sneaker video pop up,
- 6:47Speaker 8: and I was like, wow, people kind of your reaction,
- 6:51Speaker 8: like you said, when you saw what I was doing.
- 6:53Speaker 8: I saw someone reviewing a sneaker and I was like,
- 6:57Speaker 8: a sneaker. And then I'm looking to my left and
- 7:01Speaker 8: I got a whole closet, a whole wall full of sneakers.
- 7:04Speaker 5: I'm like, yo.
- 7:05Speaker 8: So I told my brother. I was like, Yo, let's
- 7:06Speaker 8: mess around. Let's make a couple of videos. We had
- 7:09Speaker 8: nothing but time on our hands at that time, and
- 7:12Speaker 8: we weren't looking at it like it was going to
- 7:14Speaker 8: be a career. We weren't looking at it necessarily with
- 7:18Speaker 8: an agenda or even goals in mind.
- 7:20Speaker 5: We kind of were just passing the time.
- 7:23Speaker 8: And it was more and so like a hobby thing,
- 7:26Speaker 8: and I think a combination of a couple of different factors.
- 7:30Speaker 8: It just started to pick up and pick up and
- 7:33Speaker 8: pick up, and then we were like, wow, like maybe
- 7:36Speaker 8: we got something here. And so then we started branching
- 7:38Speaker 8: off a little bit and and and monetizing and looking
- 7:42Speaker 8: at it from the business side of things too, and uh,
- 7:46Speaker 8: and now we're here, So, you know, feel very fortunate
- 7:49Speaker 8: to be able to work and make money with something
- 7:51Speaker 8: that I kind of grew up on.
- 7:52Speaker 5: But yes, it's been dope, man.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Which like factor you said, there was some factors which
- 7:58Speaker 6: factor contributed to the launch.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Was it like a shoot that you had it was
- 8:03Speaker 4: the rarity of it.
- 8:05Speaker 8: Yeah, Well, I think the timing of it where we
- 8:12Speaker 8: got into it at a certain time, Like YouTube had
- 8:15Speaker 8: it had been around, and this was like seven years ago,
- 8:17Speaker 8: so it had been a thing, but sneakers on YouTube
- 8:23Speaker 8: were still it was still in its infancy, you know,
- 8:27Speaker 8: like it wasn't it wasn't polished up.
- 8:28Speaker 5: It was mostly like you know, running gun.
- 8:32Speaker 8: Dude shooting on webcams or on their laptops and sitting
- 8:37Speaker 8: in a bedroom and it wasn't really polished and so
- 8:40Speaker 8: and we were far from polished too when we first started.
- 8:42Speaker 8: But so I think the timing of it worked out
- 8:45Speaker 8: well for us. I think the fact that I had
- 8:49Speaker 8: and have my brother. You know, the channel is mister
- 8:52Speaker 8: former Simpson, but it's it's a two man thing, so
- 8:56Speaker 8: having him and having a teammate to kind of rock with,
- 8:59Speaker 8: and and then the fact that yet early on we
- 9:02Speaker 8: did what we had to do to get the stuff
- 9:06Speaker 8: that people wanted to see, you know, the really really
- 9:08Speaker 8: limited stuff, the really really hyped up stuff, And so
- 9:12Speaker 8: I think those were something. And then the fact that
- 9:14Speaker 8: my brother and I both just our personalities and the
- 9:17Speaker 8: way we work, and I think it's something that's carried
- 9:21Speaker 8: over from basketball.
- 9:24Speaker 5: I just I don't really know how to do the
- 9:26Speaker 5: in between things, like for me, if I'm in on something.
- 9:29Speaker 8: And even though we started as a hobby, it was
- 9:34Speaker 8: right away we were like, yo, how do we make
- 9:35Speaker 8: the quality better? You know, I'm thinking like, damn, how
- 9:38Speaker 8: can I do the on screen thing better?
- 9:41Speaker 5: How do we create better content?
- 9:44Speaker 8: Even though it was only a hobby, I think just
- 9:45Speaker 8: my natural personality kind of pushed us to really work
- 9:49Speaker 8: hard at it. And so I think all of those
- 9:51Speaker 8: things together put us in a pretty good spot.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Now. It's crazy you say that, because it's like a
- 9:55Speaker 3: lot of stuff that I learned in basketball I still
- 9:57Speaker 3: carry over in business, in life. And one of the
- 10:00Speaker 3: biggest lessons I never really liked Burns. He was our coach,
- 10:04Speaker 3: but shout out to him, you know, let after all
- 10:09Speaker 3: these forgive it, but one thing that he really he
- 10:13Speaker 3: really really taught me. And it was like, I don't
- 10:15Speaker 3: know if you remember, but if you came fifteen minutes beforehand,
- 10:21Speaker 3: anything after fifteen minutes early was late. Like you know
- 10:24Speaker 3: what I'm saying. So if you came five minutes like
- 10:26Speaker 3: it practice started at four and you came at three
- 10:28Speaker 3: fifty five.
- 10:28Speaker 7: You was late.
- 10:29Speaker 3: And the reason I understand that now because it's like,
- 10:31Speaker 3: you gotta prep. We can't start a podcast at four
- 10:34Speaker 3: and get here at four, right, we gotta like, you
- 10:37Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. So it's like little stuff like
- 10:39Speaker 3: that really really carries over, and I understand what you're
- 10:41Speaker 3: saying as far as like I feel like you know
- 10:44Speaker 3: all of us, but especially for athletes, once you get
- 10:47Speaker 3: it's hard to really halfway do anything because you still
- 10:51Speaker 3: got that competitive spirit in you. You want to be
- 10:53Speaker 3: the best at what you do. So let's let's let's
- 10:56Speaker 3: jump into the actual sneaker culture for people that might
- 10:59Speaker 3: not be aware because it's crazy. I got a sun
- 11:01Speaker 3: and he's not and thankfully he's not in the sneakers
- 11:04Speaker 3: yet same saving me a lot of money.
- 11:05Speaker 4: I'm not as lucky.
- 11:07Speaker 7: I told him.
- 11:08Speaker 3: I told him he's doing an episode today on sneakers
- 11:10Speaker 3: and he's like, why are you doing an episode on sneakers?
- 11:11Speaker 3: Nobody's gonna watch that. I'm like, wow, He's like, nobody
- 11:14Speaker 3: cares about sneakers. I'm like, Oh, you don't know what
- 11:16Speaker 3: you're talking about so, so sneakers a billion dollar industry
- 11:21Speaker 3: and the highest sneaker ever sold actually was recently five
- 11:24Speaker 3: hundred and sixty thousand for autograph Jordan one. So there's
- 11:28Speaker 3: a whole like stock exchange for people that might not
- 11:30Speaker 3: be familiar with sneakers is called stock X, and so
- 11:34Speaker 3: that's like it's similar to the stock exchange.
- 11:36Speaker 7: Like they have bid prices, act prices. You want to
- 11:38Speaker 7: talk about it.
- 11:39Speaker 6: Yeah, so if you go to stock x and we're
- 11:40Speaker 6: not promoted by it, but I have used the site.
- 11:43Speaker 6: So we got to start looking at sneakers, ask him
- 11:45Speaker 6: outits like we said earlier. So they have prices, they
- 11:47Speaker 6: have an ask price, like you said, a big price,
- 11:49Speaker 6: and then you can see the transactions of the past
- 11:53Speaker 6: year or so. Like so when we watch a chart
- 11:55Speaker 6: on the stock market, we can watch the chart of
- 11:57Speaker 6: the value of a shoe. We can also see if
- 11:59Speaker 6: it's the appreciated or if it's appreciating right, so it's
- 12:02Speaker 6: a good thing. Like we always say, like, yo, if
- 12:04Speaker 6: a shoe, if a pair of Jordan's was eight thousand dollars,
- 12:07Speaker 6: was you buy it?
- 12:07Speaker 4: If it was on sale for sixty dollars, will you
- 12:09Speaker 4: buy it?
- 12:10Speaker 5: Right?
- 12:10Speaker 4: You got to know your end price.
- 12:11Speaker 6: So like it is a stock exchange and the sensor,
- 12:14Speaker 6: which which is why they call it stock x, And
- 12:17Speaker 6: I mean it's a pretty good site. And it also
- 12:19Speaker 6: does something that a lot of people weren't doing. And
- 12:21Speaker 6: I was a victim of this, is they authenticate the shoe.
- 12:23Speaker 6: So authenticating the shoe is extremely important, right because prior
- 12:27Speaker 6: to this, and I'm sure you probably maybe you fell
- 12:29Speaker 6: victim to it too, but it was eBay and Craigslist
- 12:33Speaker 6: that was it.
- 12:34Speaker 8: It's it's people were definitely getting got And as time
- 12:38Speaker 8: has passed, the fake pairs have gotten so much better.
- 12:42Speaker 8: It used to be you could spot a fake from
- 12:44Speaker 8: two blocks away, you could say yo. But now they've
- 12:48Speaker 8: gotten so good that you, you know, you really do
- 12:51Speaker 8: need something in place to kind of protect you in
- 12:54Speaker 8: that regard.
- 12:55Speaker 5: So yeah, stock x does a great job.
- 12:57Speaker 3: With that, so to do people, because I've seen that
- 13:00Speaker 3: the game is so there's like resellers who like buy
- 13:03Speaker 3: a pair of sneakers four hundred dollars and then they
- 13:05Speaker 3: resell it on the market for three hundred because it's
- 13:07Speaker 3: a limited quality.
- 13:08Speaker 4: But so it's like two sneaker markets.
- 13:10Speaker 6: There's like the actual global sneaker market, and then there's
- 13:13Speaker 6: a resale market. So I think when you said like
- 13:15Speaker 6: the two billion dollar market, that's like the reselling market
- 13:18Speaker 6: where people buy it and bulk and then they sell
- 13:22Speaker 6: it for a markup.
- 13:22Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 13:23Speaker 6: So if that's pair of shoes was one hundred and
- 13:25Speaker 6: ninety nine dollars, like a pair of Easies is two
- 13:27Speaker 6: hundred dollars, right by the time it gets to stock
- 13:28Speaker 6: X or one of these site stadium goods of flight Club,
- 13:31Speaker 6: that same shoe is now going to be like five
- 13:33Speaker 6: hundred minimum. So that person is going to make a
- 13:35Speaker 6: three hundred dollars profit on the shoe.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Yeah, So can you talk about that, mic as far
- 13:38Speaker 3: as you don't you don't resell obviously you're familiar with
- 13:40Speaker 3: it because you're in the culture.
- 13:41Speaker 7: Are people still doing that?
- 13:43Speaker 3: And how much money can can somebody actually make a
- 13:45Speaker 3: being a reseller?
- 13:47Speaker 5: Yeah? I mean that's a great question.
- 13:49Speaker 8: And that's probably the thing that I get messaged and
- 13:52Speaker 8: the most about on social media is like yo, because
- 13:56Speaker 8: everyone thinks, YO, get rich quick, get a couple pairs
- 13:59Speaker 8: of easy and and you know you're in there, but
- 14:02Speaker 8: and there is a ton of money in it. One
- 14:04Speaker 8: of the reasons why I never really went in that direction.
- 14:08Speaker 8: I mean, I have sold sneakers. I sold my entire
- 14:10Speaker 8: collection a few years ago, but about that. But it's
- 14:15Speaker 8: in order to really make real money in that you
- 14:19Speaker 8: have to get a lot of pairs. You can't go get,
- 14:23Speaker 8: you know, a pair of Jordan Retros on Saturday and
- 14:27Speaker 8: think that that can be your only source of income.
- 14:30Speaker 8: You know, you have Now if you go get one
- 14:33Speaker 8: hundred pairs or fifty pairs on Saturday, and now it's
- 14:37Speaker 8: fifty or a hundred bucks profit on each pair. Now
- 14:40Speaker 8: you can do the math and you can say, Okay,
- 14:41Speaker 8: there's some real money coming in here. But it's it's
- 14:44Speaker 8: definitely something that you have to get a lot of
- 14:48Speaker 8: pairs to make it worth it, in my opinion. And
- 14:52Speaker 8: then the more you know about the ins and outs
- 14:56Speaker 8: the like like any field, the you know, the different
- 14:59Speaker 8: little new one on to and stuff, the more successful
- 15:02Speaker 8: you'll be. And I think maybe the biggest thing is
- 15:08Speaker 8: to be able to predict. You know, I've heard you
- 15:11Speaker 8: guys talk about real estate before and different stuff like that,
- 15:14Speaker 8: you know, and obviously we've been talking how it's similar
- 15:18Speaker 8: to stocks. If you can predict when a sneaker is
- 15:23Speaker 8: going to take off or when it's going to crash.
- 15:25Speaker 8: Like for example, did you guys watch that Jordan documentary?
- 15:29Speaker 5: Of course? Right? So man, he wore a pair of sneakers.
- 15:34Speaker 8: I don't even remember which one it was, maybe it
- 15:36Speaker 8: was the Chicago ones. And I went to stock X
- 15:39Speaker 8: the next day and they were up like five six
- 15:42Speaker 8: hundred bucks from where they were.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Same thing.
- 15:45Speaker 8: So if you were smart, now I wasn't, But if
- 15:48Speaker 8: you were smart, go buy fifty pairs and then anticipate
- 15:54Speaker 8: the boom and then cash out. And so if you
- 15:58Speaker 8: can predict the way things are gonna go, which is
- 16:01Speaker 8: never something that I've invested a lot of time or
- 16:04Speaker 8: energy into.
- 16:04Speaker 5: But if you are able to do.
- 16:06Speaker 8: That, then like you said, there's there's there's tons of
- 16:09Speaker 8: money in it is it's a huge industry.
- 16:11Speaker 6: Like I guess the big question is, and I know
- 16:12Speaker 6: there is like an inside a lot of people know,
- 16:14Speaker 6: people like district managers of stores, so they get picked.
- 16:17Speaker 6: How is somebody getting fifty piers Like I'm come from
- 16:21Speaker 6: that era where you waited in line on Saturday, right,
- 16:24Speaker 6: and then if you were able to get into the store,
- 16:26Speaker 6: you got one. Then it turned into like if you
- 16:28Speaker 6: had a raffle ticket, then you can get it. Now
- 16:30Speaker 6: we're dealing with bots, and if anybody doesn't, you want
- 16:33Speaker 6: to explain what a bot is in the sneaker culture.
- 16:36Speaker 8: Yeah, sure, A bot is basically something that you run
- 16:38Speaker 8: on your computer to help you check out lightning fast
- 16:43Speaker 8: so that you can beat you know, the person who's
- 16:47Speaker 8: there at their computer doing it manually, trying to put
- 16:49Speaker 8: in their credit card info and boom, you already got
- 16:51Speaker 8: the sneaker and you're already you know, down the virtual block,
- 16:55Speaker 8: so to speak. But as far as how resellers get
- 17:02Speaker 8: the stuff, that's not something that I'm necessarily too privy
- 17:06Speaker 8: to because I don't do it. But sure you could
- 17:09Speaker 8: have bots. You could have I've seen people here locally
- 17:13Speaker 8: just go out in force, like basically or in numbers.
- 17:18Speaker 8: I should say, They'll go line up at a skate
- 17:22Speaker 8: shop for a pair of Nike sb's and they'll just
- 17:27Speaker 8: line up fifty deep. You know, maybe they'll bring out,
- 17:30Speaker 8: you know, some high school kids or you know some
- 17:32Speaker 8: people who are just hanging around the store and pay
- 17:34Speaker 8: them twenty bucks or forty bucks and you know, have
- 17:37Speaker 8: them stand that spot online because there are some places
- 17:41Speaker 8: and some sneakers where you can still do first come
- 17:43Speaker 8: for a serve. Then there's the bot stuff. Then maybe
- 17:47Speaker 8: you know, it's kind of like a pay to play thing.
- 17:49Speaker 8: You could you know, go to a sneaker boutique or
- 17:53Speaker 8: you know, a mom and pop maybe and you know,
- 17:57Speaker 8: maybe they'll let the pairs go early and you know,
- 18:01Speaker 8: so say maybe you get twenty thirty pairs, but you
- 18:04Speaker 8: have them early and now you can mark them up
- 18:05Speaker 8: even more. So I think there's different angles that you
- 18:09Speaker 8: can attack it from as far as getting the product
- 18:12Speaker 8: in hand. It's people assume because you know, we have
- 18:16Speaker 8: the YouTube channel and that I'm you know, touching and
- 18:20Speaker 8: reviewing sneakers every day, that you know, there's some like
- 18:24Speaker 8: you know, red carpet in front of the studio down
- 18:29Speaker 8: here where they just you know, toss me all the
- 18:31Speaker 8: limited h sawt.
- 18:33Speaker 5: After sneakers, and that's not really the case.
- 18:35Speaker 8: A lot of times I got to pay the resell
- 18:38Speaker 8: price on it myself just to get it so we can,
- 18:41Speaker 8: you know, do the video on it and get the
- 18:44Speaker 8: product in hand. So there have been other times where
- 18:48Speaker 8: I'll go to a local resale shop here and do
- 18:53Speaker 8: the video on said sneaker and then give the sneaker
- 18:57Speaker 8: back sometimes.
- 18:57Speaker 5: So sometimes I'll.
- 18:59Speaker 8: Get lucky and you know, I'll get a pair at retail,
- 19:02Speaker 8: you know, online or however it goes. But it's getting
- 19:06Speaker 8: the product is is definitely one of the biggest obstacles
- 19:10Speaker 8: as far as someone getting into that line of work.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I read somewhere where it's become a lot harder
- 19:16Speaker 3: now because, yeah, a lot of places you can only
- 19:19Speaker 3: buy one pair at a time limit you online. Then
- 19:22Speaker 3: if you try to buy it on like the easies,
- 19:24Speaker 3: you can't even buy them like retail, like they sell
- 19:27Speaker 3: out so quickly it's limited edition. So it's become so
- 19:32Speaker 3: the counterfeit market I've actually read is actually booming and
- 19:35Speaker 3: they've become really good. Like you said, sometimes you can't
- 19:38Speaker 3: even tell the difference between counterfeit, So is that all
- 19:41Speaker 3: coming out of like China or is it counterfeits like
- 19:45Speaker 3: just all over everywhere at this point, and you just
- 19:47Speaker 3: really don't know because they said, like it's sometimes you
- 19:49Speaker 3: really don't even know if it's if it's real or not.
- 19:51Speaker 6: I think they sees like a there was like a
- 19:53Speaker 6: seventeen million dollar season at the border, like they got
- 19:56Speaker 6: a shipment of just fake Jordan's seventeen million.
- 19:59Speaker 4: It was crazy.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I think they are mostly from China. I'm not.
- 20:05Speaker 8: Super familiar with it because we completely stay away from it.
- 20:08Speaker 8: There's been other sneaker YouTube channels that have dove much
- 20:14Speaker 8: deeper into that, where you know, maybe they'll compare a
- 20:18Speaker 8: real pair and a fake pair, or try to educate
- 20:20Speaker 8: people in that regard or whatever. So they've got their
- 20:23Speaker 8: hands on the fake pairs, but we don't really do
- 20:27Speaker 8: anything in that regard. But yeah, I think I guess
- 20:29Speaker 8: they've got you know, big factories over in China, and
- 20:33Speaker 8: they're getting better and better at at making them look
- 20:36Speaker 8: damn near identical.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Well, they probably make them in the same factor they
- 20:39Speaker 3: make the real ones. It's like this, it's a factory
- 20:42Speaker 3: in China that's making the real ones. So what's the
- 20:45Speaker 3: difference between They'll just put summerside for fake they actually
- 20:48Speaker 3: probably aren't.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Real making millions.
- 20:50Speaker 6: They had advice had a whole show on the fake
- 20:54Speaker 6: retail market.
- 20:55Speaker 5: Dude's making millions.
- 20:56Speaker 6: Yeah, he's making millions of dollars and everybody knows it.
- 20:59Speaker 6: But the thing is, like, yo, I could just fit
- 21:01Speaker 6: in with this fifteen pair of fifteen dollars pair of sneakers,
- 21:04Speaker 6: or I could have the one hundred and eighty dollar
- 21:06Speaker 6: pairs sneakers. They gonna look the same and when I
- 21:07Speaker 6: walk out the side, you're not gonna know difference anyway.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Nah, But that you know what, that's crazy though, what
- 21:11Speaker 3: you said as far as like predicting events, because that
- 21:14Speaker 3: reminds me of the stock Like we look at we
- 21:16Speaker 3: buy stock and were like iPhone thirteen is about to
- 21:20Speaker 3: come out, so we predict that Apple's stock price is
- 21:24Speaker 3: going to go out.
- 21:25Speaker 7: It's all an educated guest.
- 21:26Speaker 3: We don't really know it not, So I never really
- 21:28Speaker 3: looked at it as far as sneaker is in the
- 21:30Speaker 3: same capacity. But yeah, you could say, okay, like let's
- 21:34Speaker 3: say that you know, Lebron decides he's going to retire
- 21:37Speaker 3: after this season, then the last sneaker that he puts
- 21:40Speaker 3: out hypothetically could be more valuable because he's not gonna
- 21:44Speaker 3: put on anyone.
- 21:45Speaker 6: That literally happened this year with the untimely death of
- 21:48Speaker 6: Kobe Bryant. So like Kobe passing, now, if you try
- 21:51Speaker 6: to get any Kobe sho any of the thirteen or
- 21:53Speaker 6: fourteen ones he put out, they're over a four hundred
- 21:55Speaker 6: dollars each, like whereas when he was alive and playing,
- 21:59Speaker 6: that wasn't the case, like you could buy a Kobe
- 22:01Speaker 6: so outside, like the Kobe nine. When he came out
- 22:02Speaker 6: the high top and it changed, it was like it
- 22:04Speaker 6: was affordable to do. And now it's like, yo, four
- 22:06Speaker 6: hundred dollars at the minimum.
- 22:07Speaker 3: So but Mike, yeah, let me let me ask you this,
- 22:10Speaker 3: what is what is the how does sneakers actually get value?
- 22:13Speaker 3: Because to me, it's a little I feel like, I said,
- 22:14Speaker 3: I'm not a sneakerhead, but I saw you did a
- 22:16Speaker 3: review on your on your page a few days ago
- 22:18Speaker 3: with the off white something off white oes. Yeah, it
- 22:21Speaker 3: looked it looked like it was it was a dope
- 22:22Speaker 3: sneaker to me. But she was like, you can actually
- 22:24Speaker 3: get it for a cheaper price now. So it seems
- 22:26Speaker 3: to me like the randomnest sneakers just go up crazy,
- 22:31Speaker 3: Like is there like a rhyme or reason to why
- 22:33Speaker 3: sneakers are valued at what they're valued on the secondhand market.
- 22:37Speaker 8: I think it's just what the consumer kind of pushes
- 22:42Speaker 8: it to and and or lets it drop to. You know,
- 22:47Speaker 8: it really is and That's why sometimes you'll see people,
- 22:50Speaker 8: you know, complaining about prices, and even me sometimes I'm like, man,
- 22:53Speaker 8: I can't I want that sneaker, but I'm not going
- 22:55Speaker 8: to pay that.
- 22:56Speaker 5: But it's us who set the market. You know.
- 22:59Speaker 8: It's supplied and demand like anything else, and obviously certain
- 23:03Speaker 8: sneaker releases.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Are more limited, so already the supply is low.
- 23:08Speaker 8: So then if the demand is even up a little bit,
- 23:11Speaker 8: it's going to be something. It's going to reflect that
- 23:14Speaker 8: in the resell price of the sneaker. So it's it
- 23:18Speaker 8: is something that's pretty hard to predict. Like I said,
- 23:22Speaker 8: to me, it would be a headache, you know, Like
- 23:23Speaker 8: I know, if if that's something that you're doing for
- 23:27Speaker 8: a living, which I know plenty of people who do
- 23:29Speaker 8: do that and do very well for themselves, But to me,
- 23:32Speaker 8: that would be it's too wishy washy. For me, it's
- 23:37Speaker 8: too like I like to be a little bit more
- 23:41Speaker 8: certain about stuff, and so it's it is really tough
- 23:45Speaker 8: to predict sometimes. But you know, if you really have
- 23:49Speaker 8: your ear to the street, so to speak, and by
- 23:51Speaker 8: that I mean just really on social media because that's
- 23:54Speaker 8: what things are these days, you can kind of feel
- 23:57Speaker 8: it starting a bubble, you know, like these night ESB sneakers.
- 24:01Speaker 5: You know, Nike skateboarding.
- 24:03Speaker 8: Is something that several years ago were really popular, and
- 24:08Speaker 8: then over the past few years they kind of got stagnant.
- 24:12Speaker 8: No one really wanted them other than people who were
- 24:15Speaker 8: skating in them, but they had no resell value. And
- 24:17Speaker 8: now over the last year or so, it's just bananas.
- 24:21Speaker 8: Like it was a pair that I had and they
- 24:25Speaker 8: were reselling for like two grand and retails like a
- 24:30Speaker 8: hundred bucks. So it's but about a year ago, you
- 24:36Speaker 8: could feel it start to bubble, you know. You could
- 24:38Speaker 8: people were talking about them more, people were posting more.
- 24:41Speaker 8: You could see you could see the resell prices kind
- 24:45Speaker 8: of climbing a little bit, the releases being a little
- 24:47Speaker 8: bit more hyped up, the sneaker blogs covering the stuff more,
- 24:50Speaker 8: and so you can you can feel it start to bubble.
- 24:54Speaker 8: It's not like a complete shot in the dark, but
- 24:56Speaker 8: it is something that you got to really be in
- 24:58Speaker 8: tune with if that's how you're gonna make your money.
- 25:00Speaker 6: Yeah, So the SB, I'm glad you brought that up
- 25:03Speaker 6: because the SB obviously, and we're going to talk about
- 25:05Speaker 6: the Ben and Jerry that you got we need to
- 25:06Speaker 6: talk about that, because I saw the post we're gonna
- 25:09Speaker 6: talk about that.
- 25:10Speaker 4: We got to talk about that.
- 25:11Speaker 6: But the SB has, like you said, like a year ago,
- 25:14Speaker 6: came back, and I feel like it was a Travis
- 25:17Speaker 6: Scott effect, Like that's the power of influence. Like every
- 25:19Speaker 6: time Travis Scott would put on the SB, whether it
- 25:21Speaker 6: was the Diamond or the ones he made.
- 25:23Speaker 4: You would see that shoe go up.
- 25:26Speaker 6: But prior to that, I think, and maybe you can
- 25:28Speaker 6: add to this, the one that changed the way sneakers
- 25:31Speaker 6: looked at I think it has to be the SB Pigeon.
- 25:33Speaker 8: No, well, I mean that was that was one of
- 25:37Speaker 8: the first sneakers that really created like a real real craze,
- 25:44Speaker 8: you know. And so yes, but I think there's been
- 25:48Speaker 8: an ebb and flow to sneakers, and I mean really
- 25:51Speaker 8: everything goes that way, but it's the things will be
- 25:58Speaker 8: sky high and then you know, they'll kind of gradually
- 26:01Speaker 8: slide back down and then something will happen where it
- 26:04Speaker 8: booms again. And I think what you said about Travis
- 26:07Speaker 8: Scott is is I think you really nailed it on
- 26:09Speaker 8: the head, you know, especially now social media, Like I
- 26:14Speaker 8: think that that's the ingredient that took sneakers from a
- 26:20Speaker 8: much more niche really much smaller group of people that
- 26:29Speaker 8: really really cared about it and really took it to
- 26:33Speaker 8: where it's at now. I mean social and and a
- 26:36Speaker 8: big part of that social media is, like you said,
- 26:38Speaker 8: the Travis Scott's of the world, the celebrities. You know,
- 26:41Speaker 8: you've got Kylie Jenner on on wearing sb's and you
- 26:48Speaker 8: know a lot of sneaker people were upset because they
- 26:50Speaker 8: were like, oh, she's not you know.
- 26:52Speaker 4: She's getting them for free.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Well yeah, and like, yo, she's she's new to this.
- 26:56Speaker 8: And but the truth of the matter is they still
- 27:00Speaker 8: have incredible influence. And when people start seeing that stuff
- 27:03Speaker 8: on Instagram and they start saying, I want that sneaker,
- 27:06Speaker 8: I want that one, and you know, now they're on
- 27:10Speaker 8: stock x or now they're you know, searching to where
- 27:13Speaker 8: they can find the sneaker. And so celebrities have really
- 27:19Speaker 8: boomed things in my opinion, and Instagram specifically, and you know,
- 27:23Speaker 8: just social media in general.
- 27:24Speaker 5: I guess.
- 27:25Speaker 6: So you spoke about not having the magic carpet where
- 27:28Speaker 6: the sneakers are getting delivered to your door as a company.
- 27:33Speaker 6: Was there one that you said you know what, I
- 27:35Speaker 6: need to have this, and if so, what was the
- 27:38Speaker 6: highest price you had to pay for that shoe?
- 27:41Speaker 8: Okay, So it goes two different ways. First is how
- 27:47Speaker 8: much would I pay for a sneaker that I want
- 27:51Speaker 8: to wear? You know, I want to wear it. I'm
- 27:54Speaker 8: going to beat them up and I'm just okay with that.
- 27:57Speaker 8: And then how much am I willing to pay for
- 28:00Speaker 8: a sneaker that I'm going to get and we're going
- 28:04Speaker 8: to create content around it, and then maybe down the line,
- 28:09Speaker 8: I think it's going to hold value and it will
- 28:11Speaker 8: be something I can sell down the line. So even
- 28:13Speaker 8: though I'm not reselling on a day to day and
- 28:15Speaker 8: that's not how I make my money per se, there
- 28:18Speaker 8: are still sneakers.
- 28:19Speaker 5: That that come and go, you know.
- 28:21Speaker 8: So the first part of that would be the Kobe
- 28:24Speaker 8: six Grinch, which is that you know that really bright
- 28:27Speaker 8: green pair of Kobe sixes and it was it's my
- 28:32Speaker 8: favorite Kobe sneaker of all time. And actually a few
- 28:37Speaker 8: weeks before he passed, I said, you know what, I'm
- 28:40Speaker 8: going to do it, and and I paid like a
- 28:42Speaker 8: thousand bucks for him, and and I got him and
- 28:46Speaker 8: we did the video down here at the workshop, and
- 28:51Speaker 8: we actually posted it on Sunday morning, and then my
- 28:55Speaker 8: brother and I went and hooped, and after we my
- 29:00Speaker 8: brother left the gym first, and when I got over
- 29:03Speaker 8: to the sideline, I was putting my stuff on and
- 29:05Speaker 8: changing my sneakers. I looked at my phone and he
- 29:07Speaker 8: told me Kobe passed. And so it was just crazy
- 29:12Speaker 8: how how that worked. And you know, now obviously, like
- 29:18Speaker 8: you mentioned earlier, you know, you know, with him passing,
- 29:22Speaker 8: everyone devastated, but then there was obviously people who were
- 29:25Speaker 8: still capitalizing on how many people wanted Kobe's at that point.
- 29:29Speaker 8: So now the sneaker is like double that or or
- 29:32Speaker 8: or triple that.
- 29:33Speaker 5: So that was That's.
- 29:36Speaker 8: Probably about the most I've spent on a sneaker to
- 29:39Speaker 8: actually wear. And then as far as getting something that
- 29:45Speaker 8: I knew would have some value down the line or
- 29:48Speaker 8: down the road, would be the Red October Easies when
- 29:52Speaker 8: when he was when he was still with Nike.
- 29:53Speaker 5: Yeah, and I can't remember exactly what I paid.
- 29:57Speaker 8: It was a homie who looked out, so I think
- 30:01Speaker 8: it was around two thousand, and I ended up selling
- 30:04Speaker 8: them for like maybe forty five hundred or five thousand,
- 30:09Speaker 8: you know, maybe a year later or something like that.
- 30:12Speaker 7: Yeah, that's crazy.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Like I said, if you look at it from a
- 30:14Speaker 3: stock and how much of those now, like ten thousand.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Probably the red out too, probably fifty five hundred right now.
- 30:19Speaker 8: Yeah, I think depending on the size, and that's another thing, right,
- 30:22Speaker 8: that's true too, Yep, yep, you know, depending like I
- 30:26Speaker 8: think I wear size thirteen. I think in my size,
- 30:29Speaker 8: I think the lowest listing that I saw on stock
- 30:32Speaker 8: X recently might have been close to ten grand.
- 30:35Speaker 4: That's true.
- 30:35Speaker 6: So like that sometimes when they put these things out,
- 30:38Speaker 6: I can get a shoe for four hundred dollars if
- 30:41Speaker 6: you were size thirteen, or if you got like a
- 30:42Speaker 6: real small foot.
- 30:44Speaker 5: The small foot is that's tough.
- 30:46Speaker 8: The small like sometimes like a size four and a
- 30:48Speaker 8: half and it'll be like double what any other size is.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and at thirteen makes a big difference too, because
- 30:53Speaker 3: I wear thirteen too, and it's like that's the last
- 30:55Speaker 3: size that there's no half, So it's like there's no
- 30:58Speaker 3: twelve and a.
- 30:58Speaker 7: Half mostly mostly so.
- 31:02Speaker 3: It's like eleven, eleven and a half twelve, So after twelve,
- 31:04Speaker 3: it's like twelve, thirteen, fourteen to so now it becomes
- 31:07Speaker 3: harder and it's less sneakers. I think the most popular
- 31:10Speaker 3: is like ten and a half something like that, the
- 31:12Speaker 3: most Like yeah, but now that's crazy that but like
- 31:17Speaker 3: I said, looking at it from a stock standpoint, you
- 31:19Speaker 3: brought it, sold it for forty five hundred, that's.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Like twenty two hundred.
- 31:25Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, twenty two hundred.
- 31:26Speaker 7: You sold it for forty five hundred.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Yeah, So that's that's like one hundred percent increase, more
- 31:31Speaker 3: than one hundred percent increase. So if you look at
- 31:33Speaker 3: it from a stock that's like, you know, a great investment.
- 31:35Speaker 6: But that's so that's true, right, But that imagine if
- 31:38Speaker 6: you got it at retail, right, because in retail puts
- 31:41Speaker 6: two hundred dollars, you know what I'm saying. So if
- 31:42Speaker 6: you're one of those people who got lucky, like Nike
- 31:44Speaker 6: put that out on a random day, you bought it
- 31:46Speaker 6: for two hundred, Now you're selling it for five thousand.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Show me the stock that's going to do that right now?
- 31:52Speaker 5: Oh yeah, no, it's crazy. Now. Now it is important
- 31:56Speaker 5: to note, like.
- 31:57Speaker 8: I think something with people who resell sneakers because it
- 32:01Speaker 8: is so hard and it is there is so much
- 32:03Speaker 8: luck required to get pairs at that retail price. But
- 32:07Speaker 8: going back to what we were talking about as far
- 32:09Speaker 8: as being able to predict the market, like what if
- 32:13Speaker 8: you cashed everyone out who had a pair who was
- 32:16Speaker 8: willing to sell. What if you were cashing them out
- 32:18Speaker 8: even at three thousand, just you know, thirty five hundred,
- 32:22Speaker 8: Even if you were doing four thousand and now, say
- 32:25Speaker 8: you sat on now you'd have to tie up some bread.
- 32:28Speaker 8: But if you sat on twenty pairs and now doubled
- 32:34Speaker 8: your money, you know, now you're really talking. So I
- 32:37Speaker 8: think a lot of the resell market is buying it
- 32:39Speaker 8: at a lower resell price because.
- 32:44Speaker 5: You know that they'll go up. Like Travis scott.
- 32:46Speaker 8: Sneakers for example, pretty much every single one that I've
- 32:49Speaker 8: seen since he started, you know, doing collaborations with Nike,
- 32:52Speaker 8: every single one is noticeably more expensive six months after
- 32:59Speaker 8: release than it was a month after release. So it's
- 33:02Speaker 8: just going up and up and up and up. So
- 33:05Speaker 8: being able to predict that, I think allows you to
- 33:08Speaker 8: maybe get more in bulk, although of course if you
- 33:12Speaker 8: can get something for retail, then it's a home run.
- 33:14Speaker 6: Yeah, him in Virgil right now, the cash kings for
- 33:17Speaker 6: sneakers As far when it comes to Nike it's not
- 33:20Speaker 6: even close.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Yes, So we got the backstory on the whole sneaker industry.
- 33:24Speaker 3: But now we're gonna go into my favorite part. We're
- 33:26Speaker 3: gonna you're gonna look in your business model as far
- 33:28Speaker 3: as you know, like I said, you're an entrepreneur, you're
- 33:30Speaker 3: not just a sneaker enthusiast. So we're gonna we're gonna
- 33:33Speaker 3: look at your business model and see how you know,
- 33:35Speaker 3: how you've become successful.
- 33:36Speaker 7: In the next segment, let's do it all right.
- 33:40Speaker 3: So yeah, so in this segment, this is this is
- 33:42Speaker 3: the interesting thing about Earn your Leisure because it's like,
- 33:43Speaker 3: if you talk about businesses and there's so many different
- 33:46Speaker 3: ways to make money in this world and so many
- 33:48Speaker 3: ways to capitalize off of your passion, and sneakers is
- 33:52Speaker 3: no different A lit of time, Like I said, people,
- 33:53Speaker 3: I wanted to do this episode a little different because
- 33:55Speaker 3: everybody knows about the resale aspect of it, and that's
- 33:58Speaker 3: the most obvious. But it's like the old ad it says,
- 34:00Speaker 3: like the people that really made the most money during
- 34:03Speaker 3: the gold Rush wasn't the people who actually found goals,
- 34:05Speaker 3: the people that like sold the picks and all of
- 34:07Speaker 3: the utility stuff to the people that's looking for goal
- 34:10Speaker 3: because it's like it's so many people trying to resell sneakers.
- 34:13Speaker 3: Only a select few was going to actually make money
- 34:14Speaker 3: reselling sneakers, but all of the ancillary stuff, that's where
- 34:18Speaker 3: nobody's really thinking about. And that's where I really like,
- 34:20Speaker 3: like what you're doing. So can we talk about that,
- 34:22Speaker 3: because it's like, from the outside looking in, you got
- 34:24Speaker 3: like a real like Bolman business operation going. So you
- 34:28Speaker 3: do sneaker reviews. It reminds me of the kid, right,
- 34:30Speaker 3: you know Ryan? You ever heard of him? Ryan made
- 34:33Speaker 3: fifty five million dollars fifty He made fifty five million
- 34:37Speaker 3: dollars on YouTube last year something like that, and he's
- 34:39Speaker 3: the number one YouTuber. He's seven years old and he
- 34:42Speaker 3: plays with toys, oh everybody. He has toy reviews. So
- 34:47Speaker 3: when I see, like, I see you do sneaker reviews.
- 34:49Speaker 3: So you do sneaker reviews, You have merch you do,
- 34:53Speaker 3: you got endorsement deals with companies, like you're you're an influencer.
- 34:57Speaker 3: You probably do events and stuff like that.
- 34:58Speaker 7: So yeah, can you.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Talk about that as far as like your your business model,
- 35:02Speaker 3: because yeah, you got a whole business around sneakers, and
- 35:05Speaker 3: it's not it doesn't involve selling sneakers.
- 35:07Speaker 8: Right right exactly, Yeah, no. And I didn't go to
- 35:11Speaker 8: school for business. My brother didn't go to school for business,
- 35:14Speaker 8: you know. So uh but we are from New York City,
- 35:17Speaker 8: as you know, and and you know, so it's it's
- 35:19Speaker 8: in our blood. And when we first started, like I,
- 35:23Speaker 8: like I mentioned, it was kind of a hobby, right,
- 35:26Speaker 8: And then as things progressed and built a little bit,
- 35:30Speaker 8: brands started reaching out and so say, okay, we'll give
- 35:36Speaker 8: you five hundred bucks to you know, review this sneaker
- 35:39Speaker 8: and and you know, plug us in the video and
- 35:42Speaker 8: let people know where they can go and buy them,
- 35:44Speaker 8: et cetera, et cetera. So at the time we're like,
- 35:46Speaker 8: all right, cool, But but then we started to realize.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Like, erners, what's up.
- 35:55Speaker 6: You ever walk into a small business and everything just works,
- 35:58Speaker 6: Like the checkout is fast, receipts are digital, tipping is
- 36:02Speaker 6: a breeze, and you're out the door before the line
- 36:04Speaker 6: even builds.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Odds are they're using Square.

- 37:44Speaker 9: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 37:48Speaker 9: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from El Salvador
- 37:52Speaker 9: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 37:56Speaker 9: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 38:00Speaker 9: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 38:04Speaker 9: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy Noman, the United States
- 38:08Speaker 9: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 38:12Speaker 9: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 38:16Speaker 9: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 38:19Speaker 9: are here illegally, your next you will be fine nearly
- 38:23Speaker 9: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned and deported, you will
- 38:27Speaker 9: never return. But if you register using our CBP home
- 38:31Speaker 9: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 38:35Speaker 9: Do what's right. Leave now. Under President Trump America's laws,
- 38:40Speaker 9: border and families will.
- 38:42Speaker 8: Be protected sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security. Well,
- 38:46Speaker 8: if the brands are willing to pay us to show product,
- 38:53Speaker 8: why can't we just make our own product and just
- 38:59Speaker 8: kind of like we don't need the brand, you know,
- 39:02Speaker 8: as far as that goes, really, And so we created Uncivilized,
- 39:07Speaker 8: which is like, you know, a little streetwear brand that
- 39:10Speaker 8: we started, and you know, we do really well with it, man,
- 39:13Speaker 8: and it's you know, we keep it simple. We didn't
- 39:17Speaker 8: try to reinvent the wheel or anything. Again, a lot
- 39:21Speaker 8: of the stuff, well really all of the stuff that
- 39:23Speaker 8: my brother and I do, it's stuff that we've been
- 39:25Speaker 8: passionate about. So I think when we implement it into
- 39:30Speaker 8: kind of the business model, it works really well because
- 39:33Speaker 8: we're passionate about it. You know, like my brother was
- 39:37Speaker 8: printing on white teas when he was in like ninth grade,
- 39:40Speaker 8: and you know, slinging him out of the cafeteria in
- 39:42Speaker 8: high school.
- 39:43Speaker 5: You know.
- 39:43Speaker 8: So it's it's kind of just a more advanced version
- 39:49Speaker 8: of that. And so yeah, so we have the the
- 39:53Speaker 8: brand deals. And we also noticed as we grew the
- 39:57Speaker 8: channel and got bigger and talk to more brand people
- 40:02Speaker 8: and stuff, that those brands have a lot of money
- 40:06Speaker 8: they got a lot of money for advertising. And YouTube
- 40:11Speaker 8: is kind of like a new frontier in that regard
- 40:14Speaker 8: because it hasn't been around for that long. And I
- 40:16Speaker 8: think brands are starting to realize, you know, wow this
- 40:20Speaker 8: you know, you hear this influencer word, and you know,
- 40:22Speaker 8: I think sometimes it's easy to be like, you know, yeah, whatever,
- 40:27Speaker 8: but I think brands are starting to realize, especially certain people,
- 40:31Speaker 8: that man, this is really it's almost like guerrilla marketing.
- 40:35Speaker 5: You know.
- 40:35Speaker 8: It's like the way we saw advertisements growing up. It's
- 40:40Speaker 8: different now, you know.
- 40:41Speaker 5: And so.
- 40:43Speaker 8: We realize that a lot of these brands had had
- 40:46Speaker 8: pretty big money that they could put into what we do.
- 40:51Speaker 8: And so the brand Lane and Angle is is one
- 40:57Speaker 8: way that we work and make money. The Uncivilized clothing
- 41:02Speaker 8: is is another way we We even had a beard
- 41:06Speaker 8: care company for a little while called Beard Necessities where
- 41:09Speaker 8: we were, you know, selling beard oils on Amazon, so
- 41:13Speaker 8: and we were kind of promoting it through because right,
- 41:17Speaker 8: we've we've built this audience and we've built this this
- 41:21Speaker 8: this kind of this platform. So if you don't use
- 41:25Speaker 8: that to your advantage, then I think you're leaving a
- 41:29Speaker 8: lot of money on the table. And I think that
- 41:32Speaker 8: you know, you're missing out, and especially I think sometimes
- 41:35Speaker 8: people are like, oh, well, you know, if you're monetizing
- 41:40Speaker 8: the audience, then you know, that's whack, that's not cool.
- 41:43Speaker 8: That But we're not pushing stuff that that we don't
- 41:47Speaker 8: agree with. We're not pushing bogus products. You know, we're
- 41:52Speaker 8: you know, we rock with the brands that that we
- 41:57Speaker 8: align with and and that our audience does too. So
- 42:01Speaker 8: it's organic and it makes sense and we can make
- 42:03Speaker 8: money and make a living at it. So there's a
- 42:05Speaker 8: lot of different kind of you know, little aspects I
- 42:09Speaker 8: guess of the overall business model. But you know, really
- 42:13Speaker 8: the main thing is goes back to one of the
- 42:16Speaker 8: first things I said, which is we just try to
- 42:18Speaker 8: outwork everybody. Man like, we love what we do. Uh,
- 42:21Speaker 8: you know, we love each other, which is really important.
- 42:25Speaker 5: You know. I think sometimes people are like, oh, you
- 42:26Speaker 5: work with your brother. You know we live together too.
- 42:28Speaker 5: You live with your brother.
- 42:29Speaker 8: We you know, you know I would be ready to
- 42:31Speaker 8: strangle my brother, but you know, for him and I
- 42:34Speaker 8: we've always had a great relationship. We don't fight, we
- 42:37Speaker 8: don't argue, we love the same stuff, and so it's
- 42:41Speaker 8: just worked out really well, you know, doing what we do.
- 42:43Speaker 6: When you said the brands are reaching out, are you
- 42:46Speaker 6: talking about the actual brands, so we're talking like Nike
- 42:48Speaker 6: Adida Okay, yeah, because I mean there's also partnership. Are
- 42:52Speaker 6: you also doing partnerships with shoe accessory so I'm thinking
- 42:56Speaker 6: like shoe cleaning devices and things like that.
- 42:59Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, we we haven't done too We have
- 43:01Speaker 8: done some stuff with shoe cleaner companies, we haven't done
- 43:06Speaker 8: too too much. We've done a lot of stuff with
- 43:09Speaker 8: stock X. We've done stuff with the brand like Nike Adidas.
- 43:14Speaker 8: We've also done stuff with the retailer like finish Line,
- 43:19Speaker 8: foot Locker, something like that. So we've really kind of
- 43:23Speaker 8: worked with them all at this point. What what we
- 43:26Speaker 8: try to focus on, my brother and I is.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Not number number one.
- 43:32Speaker 8: It's it is more authentic and organic to do it
- 43:36Speaker 8: this way in my opinion, and I think.
- 43:37Speaker 5: There's also a.
- 43:41Speaker 8: There's more money in it as well, and that is
- 43:44Speaker 8: trying to create and form long term partnerships and relationships
- 43:49Speaker 8: as opposed to one offs. So as opposed to you know, okay,
- 43:54Speaker 8: uh you know, say you know finish Line, Okay, you
- 43:59Speaker 8: give us exit amount of dollars and we'll do this
- 44:01Speaker 8: video for you and then okay, see you later. Now,
- 44:04Speaker 8: when I talk to brands, I'm like, hey, listen, let's
- 44:08Speaker 8: let's try to create something that's a little bit more
- 44:11Speaker 8: long lasting than that. I think it has more impact.
- 44:14Speaker 8: I think it reaches the audience better. So now maybe
- 44:19Speaker 8: we bump the price down, you know a little bit,
- 44:22Speaker 8: but maybe we do something for six months or a year,
- 44:26Speaker 8: and it keeps us with money coming in, and it
- 44:31Speaker 8: keeps us working with the brands who really kind of
- 44:36Speaker 8: rock with us, and it just I don't know, I
- 44:38Speaker 8: just feel like it's a it's a stronger way to
- 44:40Speaker 8: do it than all the one.
- 44:43Speaker 5: Off stuff that you see.
- 44:44Speaker 6: Sometimes we talk we talk about the middleman a lot,
- 44:47Speaker 6: so like people, we talked about what stocks is fundamentally,
- 44:50Speaker 6: but really they're just the middleman between a buyer and
- 44:53Speaker 6: a seller, right and then making a profit of the
- 44:55Speaker 6: commissioner of those sales. So how did that deal come about?
- 44:59Speaker 6: And when did it come about?
- 45:01Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 45:01Speaker 8: So I actually the guy who I guess you could
- 45:05Speaker 8: say invented it. I actually knew him through social media
- 45:12Speaker 8: before it even was a stock X and it was
- 45:16Speaker 8: called Campless at the time, I think it was campleus
- 45:19Speaker 8: dot com and it was no sneakers were being sold,
- 45:23Speaker 8: but it was just all the numbers and the analytics
- 45:28Speaker 8: and you know, the stock market aspect and documentation of stuff.
- 45:34Speaker 8: And he actually flew down here to Tampa and we
- 45:41Speaker 8: grabbed lunch and talked about it, and he said, hey, like,
- 45:45Speaker 8: I think I got something here, and you know, you're
- 45:49Speaker 8: a guy that I want to work with, just you know,
- 45:52Speaker 8: as things progress, if they progress. And so then he
- 45:57Speaker 8: sold that Dan Gilbert leave and the owner of the
- 46:02Speaker 8: calves right, yeah, so and then instantly pretty much Josh
- 46:09Speaker 8: Luber is the guy's name. And so Josh reached back
- 46:12Speaker 8: out to me and said, hey, look, we wanted to
- 46:16Speaker 8: He kind of filled me in on what was going
- 46:17Speaker 8: on and said, Yo, we want to shoot a like
- 46:20Speaker 8: kind of an internet commercial and we want you to
- 46:23Speaker 8: be in it. And so we were like cool, and
- 46:27Speaker 8: my brother and I flew out to Detroit. You know,
- 46:30Speaker 8: they kind of tore us around and and you know,
- 46:35Speaker 8: kind of showed us the ins and outs of the business.
- 46:37Speaker 5: It's it was crazy.
- 46:38Speaker 8: Even at that time, this was probably I don't know,
- 46:41Speaker 8: three four years ago.
- 46:43Speaker 5: Even at that.
- 46:44Speaker 8: Time it was they had a bunch of employees, like
- 46:48Speaker 8: they were already booming, and so we we kind of
- 46:52Speaker 8: were in on the on the ground floor with them.
- 46:54Speaker 8: And it's also the place that that I was comfortable
- 47:00Speaker 8: early on buying and selling sneakers myself. Like, like I
- 47:02Speaker 8: mentioned a few years ago, I sold my entire sneaker
- 47:06Speaker 8: collection pretty much, and you know now I've accumulated just
- 47:10Speaker 8: about as much again, but uh so all of my
- 47:14Speaker 8: unworn pairs I sold them through stock X. And so
- 47:17Speaker 8: it's you know, we like to work with the brands
- 47:21Speaker 8: and the companies who we use and and even like
- 47:27Speaker 8: you know personally who we rock with, Like we don't
- 47:29Speaker 8: want to put something out there that I'm then gonna
- 47:32Speaker 8: you know, when I close the computer or close my phone.
- 47:35Speaker 8: Now it's something it's something different, you know. You know,
- 47:38Speaker 8: we kind of try to be authentic with it.
- 47:41Speaker 7: No, I think that's important.
- 47:42Speaker 3: And it's like you know, Aren Alesia, it's a business podcast,
- 47:45Speaker 3: So we never apologize about making money, Like that's the
- 47:48Speaker 3: whole point. And I feel like a lot of times
- 47:49Speaker 3: with creatives and content creatives, like what you said, as
- 47:52Speaker 3: far as like their community sometimes might fill away like
- 47:55Speaker 3: oh you're making money, but I think as long as
- 47:57Speaker 3: you educate the people and you you're not trying to
- 48:00Speaker 3: scam the people, they actually want you to make money
- 48:03Speaker 3: because it's like you've providing value, like you've giving them
- 48:06Speaker 3: a review is valuable to them, Like they trust you.
- 48:08Speaker 3: They know you're not just gonna give a review on
- 48:10Speaker 3: some nonsense, so it's like you're saving me a trip
- 48:13Speaker 3: to the store if it's not worth it. And it's
- 48:15Speaker 3: like even with us on the educational when it comes
- 48:16Speaker 3: to business podcast stuff like that. But it's dope for
- 48:20Speaker 3: content creators to be able to make a living off
- 48:23Speaker 3: of creating content, like even us now, like we create
- 48:26Speaker 3: content pretty much for a living, Like you're creating content
- 48:28Speaker 3: for a living. So how has that been as far
- 48:31Speaker 3: as like, cause you're not like a tech guy in heart,
- 48:36Speaker 3: I don't think like you know what I'm saying. So
- 48:37Speaker 3: but your videos, Like nah, your videos is really dope
- 48:40Speaker 3: as far as the editing and all of that, And
- 48:42Speaker 3: so how did that come about as far as like
- 48:44Speaker 3: do you have an in house team for editing and
- 48:47Speaker 3: content or like, yeah, how's that happen?
- 48:50Speaker 8: Yeah, So when we first started the channel like seven
- 48:54Speaker 8: years ago, neither one of us knew what we were doing,
- 48:56Speaker 8: my brother or.
- 48:57Speaker 5: Myself, and we didn't really know how it was going
- 48:59Speaker 5: to go.
- 49:00Speaker 8: Neither one of us were tech guys, neither one of
- 49:03Speaker 8: us were necessarily on screen guys. So he just really
- 49:08Speaker 8: really didn't want to be on camera. And I was like,
- 49:10Speaker 8: all right, well, you know, I'll be on camera.
- 49:12Speaker 5: I don't care.
- 49:13Speaker 8: And then he kind of gravitated towards the editing thing
- 49:17Speaker 8: and you know, the camera stuff, and so he got
- 49:21Speaker 8: really really really good at it, you know, to the
- 49:23Speaker 8: point where you know, I think, hands down, he's one
- 49:26Speaker 8: of the best in the space when it comes to
- 49:29Speaker 8: you know, the sneaker footage and you know, getting the
- 49:32Speaker 8: b roll and you know, he's gotten really really good,
- 49:34Speaker 8: and you know, we have we can afford good equipment now,
- 49:38Speaker 8: and so it was just kind of a natural progression
- 49:43Speaker 8: of things and us kind of pushing each other in
- 49:48Speaker 8: kind of our respective lanes. Like you know, with basketball,
- 49:52Speaker 8: like you got to do your job. Like you know,
- 49:56Speaker 8: if you have, you know, some big center at the
- 50:01Speaker 8: park who can't shoot, but he wants to dribble the
- 50:05Speaker 8: ball up the court and hoistep step back threes, everyone's
- 50:08Speaker 8: gonna get irritated. You know, it's not that's not conducive
- 50:12Speaker 8: to winning, but if you do what you're supposed to do,
- 50:15Speaker 8: then it works out really well. So he's he's pushed
- 50:18Speaker 8: himself as far as becoming a better editor, and he's
- 50:21Speaker 8: taken online classes and you know, you can self teach
- 50:27Speaker 8: anything through YouTube these days. You just google you know,
- 50:29Speaker 8: how to do blank, and you put it into YouTube
- 50:32Speaker 8: and you know, a pretty good video will probably come up.
- 50:35Speaker 8: So he's learned how to edit almost exclusively that way.
- 50:38Speaker 8: And we did hire another guy for maybe like five
- 50:43Speaker 8: six months, and he was he was a pro. He
- 50:46Speaker 8: was incredible at videography. He was incredible at what he did.
- 50:49Speaker 8: But ultimately we parted ways because it was, you know,
- 50:57Speaker 8: my brother, he basically could do the same thing, and
- 51:01Speaker 8: so it didn't there's not anything if we bring a
- 51:05Speaker 8: shooter in or we bring a camera guy, it doesn't
- 51:09Speaker 8: necessarily bump up the value all that much because my
- 51:12Speaker 8: brother can do it. So we are looking to assemble
- 51:16Speaker 8: a little bit of a team. I think, big picture,
- 51:19Speaker 8: that's the way we got to go with it, for sure,
- 51:20Speaker 8: because we got our hands full and I think ultimately,
- 51:24Speaker 8: you know, maybe we'll have a team of as many
- 51:27Speaker 8: as like ten people and we'll really be doing bigger
- 51:30Speaker 8: and better stuff. But yeah, for now, it's just it's
- 51:33Speaker 8: just me and him and you know, kind of just
- 51:35Speaker 8: self taught and just you know, hustling and hustling.
- 51:39Speaker 6: Yeah, prior to Corona, I noticed sneaker conventions and we
- 51:44Speaker 6: actually ended up at a convention. I know that the
- 51:46Speaker 6: people have booth. Is that another way to earn income,
- 51:48Speaker 6: like when people pay for you to come to these conventions?
- 51:52Speaker 5: You know, I think it definitely can be.
- 51:55Speaker 8: I know that a lot of sneaker people, for lack
- 52:00Speaker 8: of a better word, were or sneaker influencers were doing
- 52:06Speaker 8: those events for free for a very long time. And
- 52:09Speaker 8: I think the way they justified it or made it
- 52:13Speaker 8: make sense was that when they were there, they would
- 52:16Speaker 8: sell merch or they would sell sneakers, or they would
- 52:20Speaker 8: somehow make money and make it profitable. So I know,
- 52:23Speaker 8: like Sneaker Con for example, they were flying in, you know,
- 52:28Speaker 8: they would pay for the travel and stuff, and they
- 52:31Speaker 8: were bringing guys in to kind of show up and
- 52:36Speaker 8: make an appearance basically, and then that was it.
- 52:40Speaker 5: But they weren't really paying to have people go.
- 52:44Speaker 8: So for me personally, I haven't been to a lot
- 52:46Speaker 8: of sneaker events, believe it or not. You know, I've
- 52:49Speaker 8: only I've been to probably less than a handful. That's
- 52:51Speaker 8: not something that I did growing up. Really, It's not
- 52:55Speaker 8: something like I said, growing up, I never was like
- 52:57Speaker 8: I'm a sneakerhead.
- 52:58Speaker 5: So you know, it's never like I just like to
- 53:02Speaker 5: be fresh. I just like to have some you know,
- 53:04Speaker 5: some good feats.
- 53:05Speaker 8: So I've done a few and gotten paid for him,
- 53:10Speaker 8: but it's so few and the money was good, but
- 53:14Speaker 8: it's been so few and far between for me personally
- 53:18Speaker 8: that it's never something that I could make a living on.
- 53:22Speaker 8: If it was that exclusive, you know, if that was
- 53:24Speaker 8: my main income, it would be tough.
- 53:27Speaker 3: Is there any stop to sneak a mania? Because it's
- 53:30Speaker 3: been proven to be re session proof, it's been proven
- 53:32Speaker 3: to be pandemic proof.
- 53:34Speaker 7: It's crazy. They had a lot.
- 53:35Speaker 3: I think it was Chicago, so in the middle of
- 53:37Speaker 3: Corona they was like fighting with each other. So like, yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 3: it's any Is this ever like it's only going up?
- 53:46Speaker 5: Huh?
- 53:46Speaker 7: It's it's not slowing down. Huh.
- 53:49Speaker 8: It's not slowing down right now. But I think you know,
- 53:54Speaker 8: what goes up must come down. You know, I do
- 53:57Speaker 8: think that there is ups and downs to everything. I've
- 54:02Speaker 8: already seen it a little bit, just in the time
- 54:04Speaker 8: that we've you know, technically worked in or with sneakers.
- 54:09Speaker 8: There has been an ebb and flow to it, and
- 54:12Speaker 8: there has been some peaks and valleys, but I think
- 54:15Speaker 8: the general trend has pretty much been steadily, steadily, steadily up,
- 54:20Speaker 8: so we'll see. I think that there will be a
- 54:25Speaker 8: crash eventually, but it's kind of like, you know, my
- 54:29Speaker 8: brother bought a house recently, and it's like we had
- 54:33Speaker 8: been waiting for a few years because all the real
- 54:36Speaker 8: estate experts that we talked to we definitely aren't experts.
- 54:40Speaker 5: They were like, well, you know, the market's.
- 54:41Speaker 8: Going to crash you and it's going to crash youn
- 54:43Speaker 8: and so we're like, all right, cool, and the crash
- 54:46Speaker 8: didn't come.
- 54:47Speaker 5: So it's so.
- 54:50Speaker 8: It's kind of the same thing with sneakers, Like I
- 54:52Speaker 8: think at some point there will be a crash, but I.
- 54:55Speaker 5: Don't know when that's going to be. I don't know.
- 54:57Speaker 8: Maybe it's going to be in a year, maybe it's
- 54:59Speaker 8: going to be inten years. I mean, I really don't know.
- 55:02Speaker 8: But it's the trend has been up for the most part,
- 55:06Speaker 8: at least the general trend has been.
- 55:07Speaker 6: Up as long as influencers are still putting them on.
- 55:10Speaker 6: I can't see it like as guilty as it sounds.
- 55:13Speaker 6: Like when we were going through Corona and like mid
- 55:16Speaker 6: March and April, I looked on stocks, I'm like, yo,
- 55:19Speaker 6: nothing is changing, right, Like these things are still holding
- 55:23Speaker 6: their value.
- 55:24Speaker 4: It's crazy.
- 55:25Speaker 8: It really is crazy. I mean, just for us. When
- 55:29Speaker 8: the COVID stuff hit, I'm going to keep it a buck.
- 55:32Speaker 8: I actually was pretty worried because I didn't, you know,
- 55:37Speaker 8: we don't clock into a nine to five.
- 55:39Speaker 5: I don't have a.
- 55:41Speaker 8: Paycheck and paid leave and all that stuff, and so
- 55:44Speaker 8: I was like, man, like we're just kind of out
- 55:47Speaker 8: here getting it and we're doing well. But I'm like, man,
- 55:50Speaker 8: if this thing just crashes and burns, man, I'm gonna
- 55:54Speaker 8: have to really hustle. So actually I noticed the like
- 55:57Speaker 8: the first week we took really a pretty.
- 56:00Speaker 5: Big hit.
- 56:02Speaker 8: Just with with kind of with everything that we do.
- 56:06Speaker 8: I noticed that the numbers were down across the boards
- 56:08Speaker 8: for us, and I think after people realized, okay, it's
- 56:15Speaker 8: it's not the bubonic plague, not to downplay what it is,
- 56:19Speaker 8: and the severity of it and the seriousness of it.
- 56:21Speaker 8: But I think when people realize like, Okay, it's not
- 56:24Speaker 8: going to be something where it's going to seep through
- 56:27Speaker 8: the windows of my house and get me at night
- 56:29Speaker 8: type of thing, then it was like, Okay, now people
- 56:33Speaker 8: are stuck at home, and what are they doing. They're
- 56:35Speaker 8: watching more YouTube videos, They're buying more stuff, myself included.
- 56:40Speaker 5: I've never been too much of an.
- 56:42Speaker 8: Amazon shopper, and somehow I ended up buying all kinds
- 56:47Speaker 8: of crazy. I bought this right here, like it's something
- 56:51Speaker 8: that you it's like putty and you roll it on
- 56:54Speaker 8: your keyboard and it takes the dust off your keyboard.
- 56:58Speaker 5: I don't I didn't need that.
- 57:00Speaker 8: I bought it on but I bought it on Amazon
- 57:03Speaker 8: because I'm sitting there quarantined.
- 57:06Speaker 5: You know.
- 57:06Speaker 8: We were down here basically at the workshop at you know,
- 57:08Speaker 8: at the studio where we work, and we were basically
- 57:11Speaker 8: quarantined for like probably over a month straight.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Like I was starting to go crazy.
- 57:17Speaker 8: And so I think with people just at home on
- 57:20Speaker 8: their computers, on their phones, you know, a lot of
- 57:24Speaker 8: if you know, if you're selling a product, you know,
- 57:27Speaker 8: I think that you know it made it go up
- 57:29Speaker 8: even more than it was beforehand.
- 57:33Speaker 3: Online I was gonna say, online has been extremely profitable
- 57:36Speaker 3: for a lot of people during the pandemic. Is unfortunately
- 57:40Speaker 3: in life is life is a game of winning, winners
- 57:42Speaker 3: and losers, and a lot of people lost a lot
- 57:44Speaker 3: during Corona, especially brick and Martar businesses and stuff like that.
- 57:48Speaker 3: But the winners in Corona have been the people would
- 57:51Speaker 3: online operations. Because online operations, educational platforms, courses, all that stuff.
- 57:58Speaker 3: I mean, you would you would never know that it
- 58:00Speaker 3: was a pandemic. It's like business.
- 58:01Speaker 8: Business is booming absolutely absolutely, and you know, I think
- 58:06Speaker 8: also and you know, it's ah, you know, I definitely
- 58:10Speaker 8: feel for the people who you know, we're out of
- 58:13Speaker 8: work and and and missed out on money. I know
- 58:16Speaker 8: my I know it hit my pops really hard as
- 58:18Speaker 8: far as what he does for work, and he works
- 58:20Speaker 8: at a machine shop and so it's just out of work,
- 58:24Speaker 8: you know, and so it's it can get really tough.
- 58:26Speaker 8: But I think if if the the better, you can
- 58:31Speaker 8: adjust to stuff when something like that, you know, you
- 58:35Speaker 8: can never predict something like that, but when it does hit,
- 58:38Speaker 8: if you're like, all right, how can I somehow use
- 58:42Speaker 8: this and turn it into some momentum in a good
- 58:46Speaker 8: direction for me. And like, I know, some resale shops
- 58:50Speaker 8: that you know, started selling on Instagram and got websites
- 58:54Speaker 8: up and running and started doing all their online orders.
- 58:57Speaker 8: And I know basketball trainers that we're doing online zoom
- 59:01Speaker 8: training sessions and really trying to monetize on the online aspect.
- 59:08Speaker 8: Like you said, So it's it's been tough. It's definitely
- 59:12Speaker 8: been a challenging time. But I think that there's been,
- 59:14Speaker 8: you know, kind of ways to maneuver and you know,
- 59:18Speaker 8: make it work for you, you know, at least in
- 59:20Speaker 8: some cases.
- 59:21Speaker 6: I know you've got the uncivilized brand, the clothing brand,
- 59:24Speaker 6: but I'm thinking, now, any aspirations for shoe or have
- 59:28Speaker 6: any brands approach you about a collaboration.
- 59:31Speaker 8: Yeah, so we actually did a shoe with Salcony. You know,
- 59:37Speaker 8: growing up, I always said ny wait, yeah, no, I know,
- 59:42Speaker 8: maybe it's a New York thing, And then when when
- 59:44Speaker 8: we got up to their headquarters, they were like, you know,
- 59:47Speaker 8: it's Socony so so but yeah, now we did a
- 59:51Speaker 8: Salteny sneaker and it was awesome. You know, there was
- 59:55Speaker 8: only like one hundred and twenty pairs, so it was
- 59:57Speaker 8: ultra ultra limited, but nonetheless it's still a our own sneaker.
- 1:00:01Speaker 8: They still sold out instantly pretty much, and you know,
- 1:00:05Speaker 8: we're reselling for like, you know, two or three times
- 1:00:08Speaker 8: the retail price.
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: So we would love to do a sneaker, you know.
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: You know, I think sometimes because the YouTube thing is
- 1:00:16Speaker 8: still kind of in its early stages at least big
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: picture wise, I think sometimes people on YouTube might might
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: not get the respect to do a sneaker like that,
- 1:00:28Speaker 8: like you know, they think, okay, that's for somebody like
- 1:00:31Speaker 8: you know, a designer or something like that. But I
- 1:00:35Speaker 8: think that we'll definitely have stuff like that in our
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: in our future, And we're actually working on something right
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: now just ourselves where we're just gonna do like a
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: little uncivilized sneaker thing, just my brother and I'm not
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: in affiliation with any brand, just kind of our own thing.
- 1:00:49Speaker 8: So uh yeah, we're definitely, you know, we're always kind
- 1:00:53Speaker 8: of thinking on that front, so that you know, it
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: would be a dream come true to do something with
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: like a Nike or someone like that. But you know,
- 1:00:59Speaker 8: time will tell.
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: As far as uncivilized movement. Man, I went on the site.
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: Man the Shirts is sold out.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: Well, I noticed that that's part of the I mean
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: that's part of the marketing though, because it's like it's
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: always a release. It's always a limited amount, right, Like
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: it's not like an unlimited amount. It's like like you
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: gotta get it. It's like, you know who does that
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: to west Side Gun. You're familiar with him.
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: From What's what's the Czilla?
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: They make it like one hundred thousand dollars a month
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: off merch and I heard on our interview one time
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: and he was like, their marketing scheme is that they
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: only put out a limited amount and they'll drop it
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: like on a random Tuesday and it's sold out by Wednesday,
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: and they don't put it out.
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: They only do it like one day a month.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: So now you create it's like sneakers, like you know,
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: you create that command a lot of times when people
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: feel like it's people are funny like if it's unlimited,
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: but if it's limited, even if the price is higher,
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: psychologically you feel like I have to get in on this.
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: Before it's everybody does it. When artists go on tour,
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: it's the same thing. It's like, yo, I was there
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: for that moment everybody wants to capture that moment.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: So if you drop that, I know you did. The
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: London artwork on his last album was like, well, I
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: was a part of that release. Everybody wants to be part.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Of it because I've seen that might take. I need
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: that Mike Tyson. That Mike Tyson hoodie that you had
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: that was that was hard. I think that was last year.
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm gonna have to send you guys some stuff,
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: you know, you know once once we wrap up, I'll
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: get your guys sizes and stuff. But it's we uh yeah,
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: we do. We keep everything limited. We do it for
- 1:02:27Speaker 8: two reasons. One is because obviously we recognize that, you know,
- 1:02:32Speaker 8: we're not a Nike, you know, brand name, so that
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: type of demand is not there.
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: So we we try to meet the demand.
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: But we try not to go over that because it
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: is just my brother and I were putting up all
- 1:02:45Speaker 8: our own bread.
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: We don't want to have you.
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: Know, uh, five thousand pieces in the back storage room
- 1:02:53Speaker 8: here that we're just sitting on for for nothing. So
- 1:02:55Speaker 8: we do keep stuff limited, and it also helps us
- 1:02:59Speaker 8: keep the uh the quality control really good because it
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: is just him and I and we're doing all the
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: shipping ourselves and so it just lets us operate in
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: a functional and practical way. But yeah, yeah, we we
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: pretty much keep everything pretty limited.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: So what's the what's the scaling model? How what's your
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: vision for for the brand?
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: Uh?
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Moving forward in the next year five years? Like, how
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: do you see how do you see the brand growing?
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:03:27Speaker 8: I mean, I guess we have some goals, but also
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: we're kind of just moving with things, and we know
- 1:03:37Speaker 8: that if we work hard and keep putting in the work,
- 1:03:40Speaker 8: that will end up where we're supposed to be.
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: We try not to get too.
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: Rigid in like our path because you know, maybe something
- 1:03:51Speaker 8: you know, stuff comes up and and things change and
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: you know, maybe it's better to shift over this way
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: a little bit. And you know, it's like I think
- 1:03:59Speaker 8: it was Bruce Lee right who says you got to
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: be like water, right, you know, like we're just kind
- 1:04:04Speaker 8: of trying to flow with things and kind of see
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: where things go. Definitely, we want to continue to grow
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: the Uncivilized brand. We're working to open up a coffee shop.
- 1:04:21Speaker 8: That's something that that that I'm passionate about as well,
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: and we're looking at maybe having like kind of a
- 1:04:28Speaker 8: little bit of a speakeasy vibe where we finally have
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: an uncivilized retail space kind of off in the cut,
- 1:04:34Speaker 8: like a little secret, you know, like yeah, like you
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: got to.
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: You go through the bathroom and it's like on the
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: left hand.
- 1:04:40Speaker 8: Side exactly exactly, so you know, you got to give
- 1:04:44Speaker 8: them the pass word through the door.
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: But so we're working on some stuff like that.
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: The main thing is just keep creating content, keep paying
- 1:04:54Speaker 8: attention to what's going on, and keep trying to outwork
- 1:05:00Speaker 8: anyone else who's who's next to us, not even on
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: some we don't want them to do well type of thing.
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: You know, we want everyone to eat.
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: But that's just what's worked for us, not just in
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: the sneaker thing, but in basketball, in a lot of stuff.
- 1:05:15Speaker 8: You know, when we got up to school up in Massachusetts,
- 1:05:19Speaker 8: I was saying the same thing. I was coming from
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: LaSalle Academy on the Lower East Side. I thought we
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: had a good team there, and then when I when
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: I got up to school, I was like, man, these
- 1:05:26Speaker 8: dudes are our next level good. But I just worked
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: and worked and worked until I was on the court
- 1:05:32Speaker 8: and getting a lot of minutes and playing. And so
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: that that's that's the same idea right now, and that's
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: the same vision long term is man, let's just you know,
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: outwork the competition and and and see where it goes,
- 1:05:44Speaker 8: see where we end up.
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: One last question before we finished. I noticed that you
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: you do more stuff on YouTube than you do on Instagram.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: Any particular reason why you why you're more active on YouTube, you.
- 1:05:57Speaker 8: Know, that's that that that's one of the flaws right now. Actually,
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: my brother and I were just talking about how I
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: have to get the Instagram jumping a lot more. You know,
- 1:06:06Speaker 8: I almost never post on my main feed. I keep
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: the Instagram story pretty active, but the Instagram main feed
- 1:06:15Speaker 8: is is not something that I focus on at all.
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: And honestly, right now, it's been kind of like a
- 1:06:19Speaker 8: time thing, and I'm super I guess picky about the quality.
- 1:06:26Speaker 8: I don't want to just you know, post stuff that
- 1:06:29Speaker 8: I don't feel like meets a certain standard. So a
- 1:06:32Speaker 8: lot of times we won't have time to you know,
- 1:06:35Speaker 8: go take an hour and you know, take some really
- 1:06:37Speaker 8: dope shots of a sneaker or you know, we just
- 1:06:41Speaker 8: haven't really fitted into our current workflow as stuff. So
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: I definitely want to start doing more on Instagram and
- 1:06:50Speaker 8: on other platforms as well, because I think the more content,
- 1:06:53Speaker 8: the more platforms, the better. So that's something that we'll
- 1:06:58Speaker 8: be focusing on, you know, to finish the year.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: For sure.
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: I can't let you leave without asking you the number
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: one question, what's top five sneakers?
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: Man?
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: Come on, ah man, you.
- 1:07:08Speaker 8: Know you can't ask a sneaker guy that. I'm sure
- 1:07:10Speaker 8: you can relate that. There's so many, there's so many
- 1:07:13Speaker 8: to pick from, but I would say probably, you know,
- 1:07:17Speaker 8: for me, when I think of a top five, it's
- 1:07:20Speaker 8: more like nostalgia and sentimental reasons, you know, So like
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: for me, the Jordan eleven, the black and red pair,
- 1:07:28Speaker 8: the bread eleven's that was the first Jordan sneaker that
- 1:07:31Speaker 8: I ever bought with my own money in like two
- 1:07:34Speaker 8: thousand and one.
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: So, uh, that's that's in there.
- 1:07:40Speaker 8: I think I would probably put the air Max one twenty,
- 1:07:45Speaker 8: which is a sneaker that a lot of people don't
- 1:07:47Speaker 8: know about. It's it's kind of that that Spider Man
- 1:07:49Speaker 8: looking air Max that has like it has like a
- 1:07:52Speaker 8: there's different colors, but had the.
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: Sunrise colors on it, right, is what did it have
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: the sunrise colors?
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, Yeah, the Sunrise.
- 1:07:59Speaker 8: So that was the first Airmac sneakers that I ever
- 1:08:03Speaker 8: had back in ninety eight.
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: So it's stuff like that.
- 1:08:06Speaker 8: But I think you almost have to put, you know,
- 1:08:11Speaker 8: an air Force one in there just for the culture,
- 1:08:14Speaker 8: just for the longevity.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: And it's been a mainstay forever other than that. Man,
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: it's tough. It's tough.
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: The answer one that the iverson answer one. There's a
- 1:08:26Speaker 8: couple of the Penny sneakers, the early Penny sneakers that
- 1:08:29Speaker 8: I was in love with, the bo Jackson. I'm looking
- 1:08:32Speaker 8: over here to my right because a lot of my
- 1:08:34Speaker 8: favorite sneakers.
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: We can hang them up. We hang them up in
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: the rafters down here.
- 1:08:38Speaker 8: So there's a and then you know, I gotta throw
- 1:08:42Speaker 8: the salt Andy sneaker that we did just because we
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: did it, you know it, so that there's like twelve
- 1:08:50Speaker 8: five all fire a fight.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: I would say, I would say, I'm not a sneaker officiato,
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: but like sneakers, because sneakers, I feel like sneak. It
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: used to mean a lot more in it. For like
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: it's like music, like I'm old from nineties, Like you
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. I remember when sneakers first came
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: out and it meant it meant so much to the
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: to the culture. Like now it's like those sneakers are
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: being re released. But the Chris Webbers, which.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: Which one is? Like the first one, the Golden State.
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: He's going to say, yeah, the Chris Webbers, the andre Agassi's,
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: oh yeah, the.
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: The ure Agacines. So the bug Bunny Jordan's the Bugs.
- 1:09:33Speaker 8: Bundy New York Classic, Yeah, New York Classic.
- 1:09:38Speaker 7: Bo Jackson's the Orange and Blue.
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: That's what's saying.
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: They're right here.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: I got him, I got him. I got him in
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: the next room, bro. Yeah.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Yeah, And you gotta go with the air max. I
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: think the three six one with the air bubble all
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: the way around, was that the the ones the ninety
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: six nove.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: I'm surprised you didn't have the ninety five's in there, the.
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: Ninety five or you might be you might be thinking
- 1:10:04Speaker 8: about the ninety five or the ninety seven. The air
- 1:10:06Speaker 8: bubble was broken up a little bit, but it basically
- 1:10:09Speaker 8: you thinking about the ninety seven.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: The ninety five.
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: I thought that you would say that every every like
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: you gotta have a ninety five and then and.
- 1:10:17Speaker 8: You know, probably and and whenever this comes up. My
- 1:10:20Speaker 8: brother always throws the ninety five in there. You probably
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: have to have it in there. Honestly, it's just it's
- 1:10:26Speaker 8: so tough to narrow it down. But the ninety five
- 1:10:29Speaker 8: is another New York City classic.
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: I'm gonna tell you.
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: I'm gonna tell you one and shout out to what's
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: my man's name from Seattle Maclamore. He's the only one
- 1:10:37Speaker 6: who's ever put this shoe in his tops, the Nike
- 1:10:39Speaker 6: Spirit on.
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: Again.
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: I mean, it's it's one of those sleepers, but it's class.
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: I bought like five different colors of that shoe. Is
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: so comfortable. But yeah, I'm with you, the greatest who
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: ever made the Jordan Love.
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: Remember remember Addas with the sock that came out and
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: it was different colors.
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: Oh that I think those the Adida XLT or something
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: like that. They at the side like.
- 1:11:01Speaker 7: It was like blue black, like you can have, Like.
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's real nineties that.
- 1:11:06Speaker 7: I'm nineties. I'm a product.
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: And well, so we got the eleven.
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: I got number one bo Jackson's obviously, but like you
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: said when I watched, I still have this game on tape.
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: Arizona played Kentucky in the ninety six championship when Mike
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: Bibby had all these blue sneakers that I.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: Couldn't figure out what they were. I said, what is that?
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: What is that?
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: That ended up being the Pennies the original phone posit
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: that had that's in my top five?
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: Is that why your name is former Simpson.
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: After after Bibby or actual every hardaway.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: Just after the phone posits.
- 1:11:39Speaker 8: So when we were starting the YouTube channel, I was like,
- 1:11:42Speaker 8: all right, you know, I gotta, you know.
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: Put a name in.
- 1:11:45Speaker 8: And again we weren't looking at it big picture wise,
- 1:11:49Speaker 8: so and at the time I had a bunch of phones,
- 1:11:52Speaker 8: you know, right on the on the floor next to me,
- 1:11:54Speaker 8: and I was like, hey, former Simpson with it. So
- 1:11:58Speaker 8: and then and then you know, it kind of just
- 1:12:02Speaker 8: went from there. But yeah, it's funny because I rarely
- 1:12:04Speaker 8: wear phones now. But you know, obviously the you know,
- 1:12:08Speaker 8: the YouTube name don't change.
- 1:12:11Speaker 7: Sims a vintage.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: So, mister Fomer Simpson has been a pleasure. How can
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: the people contact you, well, not contact you, but what's
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: your social media handles all that information? How can they, yeah,
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: get aware of what's going on? Any any initiatives that
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: you you got going on?
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: Sure, sure, sure, so, uh, mister former Simpson.
- 1:12:31Speaker 8: On YouTube that's the main platform. Mister former Simpson on
- 1:12:35Speaker 8: Twitter and Instagram. My brother and I have a podcast
- 1:12:38Speaker 8: also where we talk about non sneaker related stuff like
- 1:12:43Speaker 8: more just like uh, you know, music, movies, food, all
- 1:12:47Speaker 8: of the stuff that's part of the same culture, but
- 1:12:50Speaker 8: you know, not sneakers per se. And that's the Phamy
- 1:12:53Speaker 8: and Buckets Unnamed podcast and that's been really fun to do.
- 1:12:57Speaker 8: But you know, pretty much just mister former Simpson across
- 1:13:00Speaker 8: the boards if if if you search, you'll be able
- 1:13:03Speaker 8: to find me.
