- 0:15Speaker 1: Tuesday has arrived and that means it's a texan tuesday
- 0:18Speaker 1: good afternoon and welcome to the program here on sports
- 0:20Speaker 1: radio am 1300 the.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Zone where you can always listen to us for.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Free on the iheart radio app my name is craig
- 0:26Speaker 1: way good afternoon thank you very.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Much for joining us. Joined by the producer, Jay Kerman.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We're with you up until five o'clock in each gen
- 0:35Speaker 1: every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday. Plenty of things to
- 0:40Speaker 1: dive into today and also plenty of conversation and sound
- 0:49Speaker 1: to hear from involved parties. Meaning, but not limited to,
- 0:55Speaker 1: D'Amico Ryan's head coach of the Houston Texans. They're 0-3,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and look who they have coming to town this week.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The Dallas Cowboys, Sunday at noon, which you can hear
- 1:06Speaker 1: the Texans broadcast on 13 Under the Zone. The Cowboys
- 1:08Speaker 1: broadcast on 98.1 FMK. That's you can take your choice
- 1:13Speaker 1: on that. There's that, and we're going to hear from
- 1:16Speaker 1: D'Amico Ryan's. Also, the Major League Baseball playoffs are underway today.
- 1:22Speaker 1: The first of the four wildcard games in the way
- 1:24Speaker 1: the Braves and Phillies playing right now. They're 1-1 in
- 1:26Speaker 1: the fourth inning. And these are all, remember, best two
- 1:30Speaker 1: out of three and all played at one site, the
- 1:34Speaker 1: higher seed. So the Philadelphia-Atlanta series is taking place.
- 1:42Speaker 2: At Truist Park.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So they're there all the way through for however long
- 1:48Speaker 1: that series.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Goes, whether it goes two games or three.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Same thing in the game that will follow after that,
- 1:55Speaker 1: where the Houston Astros will host game one against the
- 1:59Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox today and tomorrow.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And so that game comes on after that.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The primetime early evening game is the Red Sox and
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Yankees. from Yankee Stadium, and then the late-nighter from
- 2:15Speaker 1: Petco Park in San Diego is the Padres and the Cubs.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So that's underway. Postseason Major League Baseball is underway. At
- 2:23Speaker 1: the collegiate level, fall ball is underway, the fall practices
- 2:29Speaker 1: for college baseball teams. The University of Texas began a
- 2:33Speaker 1: little earlier than normal because they're going to have the
- 2:37Speaker 1: field turf surface at UFC Udish Fall Field replaced.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And that's going to start on Thursday.
- 2:44Speaker 1: So they've been practicing and they're coming up toward the
- 2:46Speaker 1: end of their allotted amount of workouts. And so they've
- 2:49Speaker 1: practiced today and then tomorrow. And then they're done in
- 2:54Speaker 1: terms of the practices on the field at Ditchfork Field
- 2:57Speaker 1: because of the replacement. They will, however, have an exhibition
- 3:01Speaker 1: game on Saturday, a full nine-inning regulation exhibition game against
- 3:07Speaker 1: the Houston Cougars. And it'll be at Dell Diamond in
- 3:10Speaker 1: Round Rock. So with this open date on the football schedule,
- 3:15Speaker 1: great opportunity to go out, a great ballpark like Dell Diamond,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and catch some Longhorn baseball. And we will also broadcast
- 3:21Speaker 1: that game for you here on 1300 The Zone Saturday
- 3:26Speaker 1: at high noon. We'll be on the air at 1145 a.m. Saturday,
- 3:29Speaker 1: and the first pitch is at noon. So anyway, there
- 3:32Speaker 1: is that. And toward that end, we've got some Longhorn
- 3:35Speaker 1: players we'll hear from, two guys who really– set the
- 3:41Speaker 1: tone and were a big part of the Longhorns' run
- 3:43Speaker 1: to Omaha in the College World Series a year ago,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and they were both freshmen. Closer, Sam Cozart, and outfielder
- 3:52Speaker 1: Anthony Pack Jr., who may be making his way toward
- 3:55Speaker 1: the centerfield position after playing primarily left field or right field,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and played centerfield during the summer with the U.S. national team. So,
- 4:04Speaker 1: We'll hear from those guys coming up here in just
- 4:07Speaker 1: a few moments. Jake Herman's the producer. Did you watch
- 4:09Speaker 1: Monday Night Football last night?
- 4:10Speaker 3: I did, and I was bringing up memes of Coach
- 4:14Speaker 3: Nate from the longest yard watching Case Keenum get out
- 4:18Speaker 3: there and take the field at 38 years old, slotting
- 4:21Speaker 3: right in seamlessly into Ben Johnson's offense. And, Craig, it's
- 4:27Speaker 3: one of those games where you really appreciate somebody sticking
- 4:31Speaker 3: with it to the point where Case Keenum got another
- 4:34Speaker 3: chance to play on a stage like that and win.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I just really, really enjoyed it, even though it wasn't
- 4:40Speaker 3: the most interesting of fourth quarters that we've seen in
- 4:42Speaker 3: a primetime game.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Linda and I watched some of that game, but you
- 4:46Speaker 1: know what else we did? And we'd seen this documentary
- 4:50Speaker 1: series in pieces over the past two, three years. the
- 4:56Speaker 1: one that was called Believers, about the Boston Red Sox,
- 4:58Speaker 1: that three-part thing that ESPN did.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It was fabulous.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Ben Affleck produced, of course, he's in it as well,
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know, being interviewed, being a lifelong Red Sox fan,
- 5:09Speaker 1: him and Matt Damon, you know, talking about it and
- 5:12Speaker 1: all these, you know, celebrities that were big parts of it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And then, of course, the athletes as well. So it
- 5:19Speaker 1: was really cool. And you knew why they were doing it.
- 5:21Speaker 1: They were doing it because the Red Sox and Yankees
- 5:22Speaker 1: start tonight. And the fulcrum of that thing is 2003-2004,
- 5:27Speaker 1: when the Yankees won on the walk-off home running in
- 5:32Speaker 1: Game 7 in the 11th inning, I think, from what
- 5:36Speaker 1: Red Sox fans refer to as Aaron Bleeping Boone, which was,
- 5:41Speaker 1: of course, had been preceded by.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Bucky Bleeping Dent, you know, back in 1978. So there
- 5:47Speaker 2: was a lot of that.
- 5:48Speaker 4: So.
- 5:53Speaker 1: We watched some of that, but we also watched the
- 5:54Speaker 1: Monday night game as well. So it's pretty, pretty cool.
- 5:58Speaker 1: What is not cool right now is an 0-3 start
- 6:01Speaker 1: for the Houston Texans. And they're trying to figure out
- 6:05Speaker 1: what's wrong, trying to get it turned back around and
- 6:08Speaker 1: figure out how they can get it together. And struggling,
- 6:14Speaker 1: coming off some tough losses. Some, you know, really difficult.
- 6:19Speaker 1: They've been blown out, although the offense was virtually non-existent
- 6:24Speaker 1: in the loss to the Bengals. They didn't have great offense,
- 6:29Speaker 1: but they had some offense against the Colts, but it.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Got away late.
- 6:32Speaker 1: They were also, as is usually the case with losses,
- 6:37Speaker 1: coaching decisions that are being second-guessed by fans, media, that
- 6:41Speaker 1: sort of thing. In the case of the Texans, D'Amico
- 6:45Speaker 1: Ryan's electing to go for it on fourth down, deep
- 6:47Speaker 1: in there, into the field early in the game to
- 6:49Speaker 1: try to set a tone, and it didn't work. In
- 6:53Speaker 1: the case of the Cowboys, Brian Schottenheimer electing or making
- 6:59Speaker 1: some calls that did not work out for them on
- 7:03Speaker 1: that final drive that ended up in the field goal
- 7:05Speaker 1: and not running out the clock, enabling Baltimore to get
- 7:08Speaker 1: in position to hit the game-winning field goal. So coming
- 7:12Speaker 1: up in the four o'clock hour, We're going to hear
- 7:15Speaker 1: from Jerry Jones. Jerry does his weekly radio show in
- 7:20Speaker 1: Dallas on Tuesday mornings. Sometimes it's okay, some of the
- 7:25Speaker 1: stuff he's saying, and, you know, it's kind of company
- 7:29Speaker 1: line stuff. Then there are times when it becomes unhinged Jerry,
- 7:35Speaker 1: when he can really cut loose. This one was somewhere
- 7:38Speaker 1: in between Jerry. But there were a couple of interesting
- 7:41Speaker 1: comments from Jerry about the explanations for what the Cowboys
- 7:46Speaker 1: did that caused them difficulties and problems. So we'll hear
- 7:51Speaker 1: him talk about that as well. But I want to
- 7:54Speaker 1: jump back to the Texans. And D'Amico Ryans was asked,
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know, through three games, and as Bill Parcells says,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you are what your record says you are. You know,
- 8:07Speaker 1: here they are all in three. He was asked to assess...
- 8:09Speaker 1: his team's offense through the first three weeks. For us,
- 8:12Speaker 1: we've got to look at it and see where we
- 8:14Speaker 1: can be better offensively. Of course, we want to move
- 8:16Speaker 1: the ball better, get out of some of those quick
- 8:19Speaker 1: three-and-out situations. We can move the ball better, just execute
- 8:22Speaker 1: a little bit better, coach it a little bit better.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Just everybody just staying together, finding a way on offense
- 8:28Speaker 1: to do more. Okay, and one thing that they are
- 8:31Speaker 1: not doing is running the ball well.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They have struggled with that.
- 8:34Speaker 1: You know, I added, I think he was my 16th,
- 8:38Speaker 1: or 17th round draft choice in my fantasy was Woody Marks.
- 8:43Speaker 3: But we hear a lot of D'Amico on this program,
- 8:45Speaker 3: and we know how much he loves Woody.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He loves Woody, and I thought, yeah, I'd take him.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I got him as a spare in case something happens
- 8:50Speaker 1: to Kyron Williams or Blake Corum or obviously Derrick Henry,
- 8:54Speaker 1: that kind of thing as well. And he was able
- 9:00Speaker 1: to help them last week, but the running game overall
- 9:03Speaker 1: has struggled. And So, Ryan Smith says, where are these
- 9:07Speaker 1: struggles originating? How is this happening?
- 9:10Speaker 6: We're looking at everything from an offensive standpoint of the
- 9:13Speaker 6: running game. What can we do differently for us to
- 9:17Speaker 6: make sure we can turn out some yards in a
- 9:18Speaker 6: run game? The positive, man, the way Demo runs the ball,
- 9:24Speaker 6: he runs it very well. the right way right you
- 9:28Speaker 6: talk about a guy running physical right undeniable and woody
- 9:32Speaker 6: with the touches that he's getting like he's getting a
- 9:35Speaker 6: lot of positive gains he's playing explosive playing fast so
- 9:39Speaker 6: i love the way the backs are running we can
- 9:41Speaker 6: continue to do a better job i thought our guys
- 9:43Speaker 6: they play with our type of play style up front
- 9:46Speaker 6: like the way the guys finished in the run.
- 9:48Speaker 7: Game um A lot of pancake blocks up front.
- 9:51Speaker 6: So the guys, we got to keep working, got to
- 9:53Speaker 6: keep trying to do some different things as well. Schematically
- 9:56Speaker 6: with our run game, You know, we just keep pressing forward.
- 9:59Speaker 6: But we're headed in the right direction.
- 10:02Speaker 7: Just got to clean up a few things.
- 10:03Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:04Speaker 1: The running game is having its struggles. So, too, is
- 10:07Speaker 1: the passing game at times. And large measure, do the injuries.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Not having Nico Collins out there, your number one receiver. So,
- 10:14Speaker 1: how do you replace the production that he was giving you?
- 10:17Speaker 7: Yeah, we're all.
- 10:20Speaker 6: Hurts not having Nico out there, right? He's a big
- 10:23Speaker 6: part of what we do offensively comes explosive plays. But
- 10:26Speaker 6: also for us is how we scheme things up, scheme
- 10:29Speaker 6: it up. We had some shots. Jay Noel has gotten
- 10:31Speaker 6: some explosive plays. Hutchinson has gotten some explosive. Dalton has
- 10:35Speaker 6: gotten explosive. So we've gotten explosives from other guys besides Nico.
- 10:40Speaker 6: We found a way to generate those. We'd like to
- 10:43Speaker 6: generate more because we know explosives is how you score points.
- 10:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:48Speaker 1: So with guys out injured, And with the inability to
- 10:52Speaker 1: run the football and some of the things that are
- 10:54Speaker 1: going on, do you consider making changes with your playbook,
- 10:59Speaker 1: with your offense, with what you can do? Or has
- 11:01Speaker 1: that shipped sales?
- 11:02Speaker 2: Is it too late for that now?
- 11:03Speaker 7: Every week, everything is changeable.
- 11:06Speaker 6: It just is a matter of getting the communication down,
- 11:10Speaker 6: getting the plays in, doing what we need to do.
- 11:12Speaker 6: That's one thing about Kaylee's system and what he's capable
- 11:16Speaker 6: of doing. He's willing to adjust and adapt to what
- 11:19Speaker 6: we need. So whatever we have to do to move
- 11:21Speaker 6: the football, we're willing, we're willing to do that.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So he mentioned communication and we heard Brian Schottenheimer talk
- 11:27Speaker 1: about this, the Cowboys, as it related to his defensive side,
- 11:31Speaker 1: although they had their communication issues on the offensive side
- 11:34Speaker 1: on that final drive against Baltimore, but on the defensive side,
- 11:38Speaker 1: largely had been communication lapses and issues and things like that.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Clearly it's happening on the offensive side as well for Houston.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So with that in mind, what, type of communication really
- 11:49Speaker 1: needs to improve here no i.
- 11:51Speaker 6: Say communication communication of the plays like play calls what's
- 11:54Speaker 6: what's that call how do the players hear it come
- 11:57Speaker 6: in the huddle how do they go out and execute
- 11:59Speaker 6: it the communication of just offensive football everybody being on
- 12:02Speaker 6: the same page terminology what we want done on a
- 12:06Speaker 6: particular play what's the protection scheme on a certain play
- 12:10Speaker 6: what's the quarterbacks drop on a certain play route dealt
- 12:12Speaker 6: by receiver there's a.
- 12:13Speaker 7: Lot of A lot of things have to happen.
- 12:15Speaker 6: A lot of things have to go right for offensive
- 12:17Speaker 6: football to be successful.
- 12:19Speaker 2: All right.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And we'll hear more from Domingo coming up next hour. Now,
- 12:24Speaker 1: on to Longhorn baseball. I mentioned Sam Cozart, outstanding freshman
- 12:30Speaker 1: season on the mound. And he had to have foot surgery.
- 12:35Speaker 1: This is something we noticed. And even on the road
- 12:38Speaker 1: late in the season with the Longhorns in Omaha on
- 12:42Speaker 1: the College World Series, And even in late regular season games,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I remember this in the weekend series in Knoxville against Tennessee.
- 12:50Speaker 1: When Sam wasn't pitching sometimes, he was in a walking boot. Now,
- 12:54Speaker 1: a lot of that, as we know, is precautionary.
- 12:56Speaker 2: It happens.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Colin Simmons was in a walking boot before they're coming
- 13:02Speaker 1: out of the last game, the whenever UTSA, before the
- 13:06Speaker 1: Tennessee contest.
- 13:07Speaker 8: Yeah, did he look hampered to you, Craig?
- 13:09Speaker 4: Nope.
- 13:09Speaker 2: He was all right.
- 13:10Speaker 1: And the support... that those apparatus, what is it, apparatuses
- 13:18Speaker 1: or apparati? Apparatuses, I think.
- 13:21Speaker 8: One of those cactus situations.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Put it this way.
- 13:25Speaker 1: The support that an apparatus like that gives to an
- 13:31Speaker 1: athlete in terms of their foot, it doesn't mean that
- 13:34Speaker 1: they're like in a cast. It's just giving them more
- 13:37Speaker 1: cushion and more flexibility.
- 13:41Speaker 2: With that.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So Cozart then had surgery in the off season. So
- 13:46Speaker 1: he was asked about his health, how he's feeling after
- 13:48Speaker 1: the foot surgery.
- 13:49Speaker 9: Right now I'm starting to throw and beginning the ramp
- 13:51Speaker 9: up for the season right now. So it's just about
- 13:54Speaker 9: overall health right now, getting the strength where I need
- 13:56Speaker 9: to have it. And just enjoying being able to throw
- 14:00Speaker 9: with the guys, honestly, just having fun.
- 14:01Speaker 7: I feel great.
- 14:03Speaker 9: You know, I'm just, it's good to be able to
- 14:05Speaker 9: relax and also be able to invest in the younger
- 14:07Speaker 9: guys and the new guys to help them understand what
- 14:10Speaker 9: Texas is And help him get.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Used to college.
- 14:13Speaker 4: All right.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Coach Hartwell's a freshman last year. He's looking at freshmen
- 14:15Speaker 1: this year. Are there any that have stood out to him?
- 14:18Speaker 9: Right now, there's about three in my mind who are very,
- 14:20Speaker 9: very impressive. Carson Reeder, for one. He's a freshman right-handed pitcher.
- 14:24Speaker 9: I think he's incredible. Tucker Thompson and Matt Mannes as well.
- 14:29Speaker 9: They're both freshman lefties. And I think they're going to
- 14:32Speaker 9: do great things for the Hornets.
- 14:33Speaker 7: Okay.
- 14:34Speaker 1: He was also asked about his leadership role, even though
- 14:37Speaker 1: he's just a sophomore, in leading the younger players on
- 14:39Speaker 1: this team.
- 14:40Speaker 9: I think for the young guys, it's just getting them
- 14:43Speaker 9: over being scared. I think for pretty much every freshman
- 14:47Speaker 9: coming to a college, especially to the University of Texas,
- 14:49Speaker 9: this big of an atmosphere, this big of a place,
- 14:51Speaker 9: you can be scared. And so it's just getting them
- 14:54Speaker 9: over the fear of being new and also teaching them
- 14:59Speaker 9: to just love themselves and be who they wanna be.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Scared, scared, was he scared last year? For about a week.
- 15:06Speaker 9: And then I had some older guys come to me
- 15:08Speaker 9: and just said there's no reason to be, and that
- 15:10Speaker 9: fixed it.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:12Speaker 1: He started a couple of midweek games last year, really
- 15:14Speaker 1: settled in the role closer. And, of course, coming off
- 15:17Speaker 1: the foot surgery, maybe it's too early to ask this question,
- 15:19Speaker 1: but the media's going to ask anyway. Does he see
- 15:21Speaker 1: himself transitioning into becoming a starter?
- 15:24Speaker 9: You know, at the end of the day right now,
- 15:26Speaker 9: I'm focusing on my overall health and also how to
- 15:29Speaker 9: best get outs. That was my job last year, whether
- 15:32Speaker 9: it was starting or closing, was just getting out as
- 15:34Speaker 9: best as possible.
- 15:35Speaker 10: And so that's my focus this year.
- 15:37Speaker 4: All right.
- 15:37Speaker 1: He was also asked about Jax Robinson. And again, the
- 15:44Speaker 1: early presence and the early impressions that are getting because
- 15:51Speaker 1: some of the catchers, have been really good.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Ian Armstrong, he's got a little oblique issue but should
- 15:56Speaker 2: be back.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Jax Robinson is a freshman from Waxahachie, and so far
- 16:00Speaker 1: he's kind of proven to be a tough out.
- 16:02Speaker 9: You know, I think Jax Robinson, from a younger guy,
- 16:05Speaker 9: has such control of himself. When he steps in the box,
- 16:09Speaker 9: he really isn't sped up or excited. He's just in
- 16:12Speaker 9: control of what he wants to do that moment.
- 16:15Speaker 2: One more from Sam Cozart.
- 16:18Speaker 1: What's the mentality of this group trying to– return, get
- 16:21Speaker 1: back to Omaha, and this time have more success there.
- 16:24Speaker 9: Yeah, I think it's a major sense of urgency from
- 16:27Speaker 9: the returners and also trying to let the new guys
- 16:31Speaker 9: understand that feeling. I know they won't be able to
- 16:32Speaker 9: truly understand it, but giving some close feel to what
- 16:37Speaker 9: that was like to them to help them understand why
- 16:39Speaker 9: we pushed so hard.
- 16:40Speaker 2: All right, that's Sam Cozart.
- 16:41Speaker 1: He was one freshman standout last year.
- 16:43Speaker 2: The other.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Anthony Pack Jr. with what he did in the outfield. Again,
- 16:47Speaker 1: he played the corner outfield spots primarily for Texas. And
- 16:52Speaker 1: another one of those guys who, even as just a sophomore,
- 16:55Speaker 1: is being viewed in the prism of being a leader.
- 16:58Speaker 11: First off the field, they're great guys. You know, just
- 17:00Speaker 11: cool guys to be around. You know, love being out
- 17:02Speaker 11: there with them. We've been getting a lot of work
- 17:04Speaker 11: out there, Coach Longley. So I think them just getting,
- 17:06Speaker 11: you know, used to this field and used to all
- 17:08Speaker 11: the conditions out here.
- 17:09Speaker 10: And it's been fun working with those guys.
- 17:11Speaker 4: All right.
- 17:11Speaker 1: He played center field. even though he'd been a corner
- 17:14Speaker 1: outfielder last year in his freshman campaign. He played center
- 17:17Speaker 1: field pretty much the whole time with Team USA.
- 17:21Speaker 11: Yeah, I've been feeling great out there. I've been taking
- 17:23Speaker 11: a lot of reps out there. But, you know, at
- 17:24Speaker 11: the end of the day, just playing wherever Coach wants
- 17:26Speaker 11: me to play. But, you know, I've been taking a
- 17:28Speaker 11: lot of reps out there. I feel good out there.
- 17:29Speaker 10: So, yeah.
- 17:30Speaker 4: All right.
- 17:31Speaker 1: There's some new teammates he has in the outfield joining
- 17:33Speaker 1: him now for Texas.
- 17:35Speaker 10: Yeah, super excited. We've been putting in a lot of work.
- 17:37Speaker 11: You know, as I said, I've been getting close to
- 17:39Speaker 11: these new guys and just ready to see Longhorn Nation
- 17:42Speaker 11: out there and, you know, I'm excited to show what
- 17:44Speaker 11: we can do out there.
- 17:45Speaker 1: All right, he's going to get to see Longhorn Nation
- 17:47Speaker 1: on Saturday out at Dell Diamond, this exhibition game.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Looking forward to that?
- 17:51Speaker 11: Game last year against Texas Tech was super fun. Get
- 17:53Speaker 11: back at Round Rock. I'm very excited. As I said,
- 17:56Speaker 11: you know, our field's about to get torn up, so
- 17:58Speaker 11: get used to the grass out there, and we're about
- 18:00Speaker 11: to go there early, get some work out there.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I thought this was kind of a funny question.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Somebody asked him, you know, of all the freshmen coming in,
- 18:08Speaker 1: which were the most excited? excited he was to see
- 18:11Speaker 1: play which of those stand out do you use a
- 18:13Speaker 1: name somebody and saying this guy's number one after all
- 18:16Speaker 1: there's more than one yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 11: I'm really excited about all of them they're all good
- 18:19Speaker 11: um you know jacks robinson's great hitter um brady marietta
- 18:24Speaker 11: um our pitching staff is really good i'm i'm excited
- 18:26Speaker 11: about all the freshmen you know trip maybin uh reese
- 18:28Speaker 11: reeston durham it's a lot of freshmen that you know
- 18:31Speaker 11: a lot of names that you're gonna hear this uh
- 18:33Speaker 11: this uh this spring.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Okay, you heard Jax Robinson mention from Sam Cozart, and
- 18:38Speaker 1: clearly he's coming in to mention he's got the attention
- 18:40Speaker 1: of Anthony Pack Jr.
- 18:42Speaker 11: Just mature, you know, can use all parts of the field,
- 18:44Speaker 11: doesn't really swing and miss a lot.
- 18:46Speaker 10: I think, you know, I'm really excited about Jax.
- 18:48Speaker 11: He's a mature hitter, not like a lot of freshmen.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Now, Robinson is a catcher. What about these new outfield transfers?
- 18:55Speaker 11: Yeah, we've been putting a lot of work out there.
- 18:56Speaker 11: As I said, we coached Longley, and, you know, I
- 18:59Speaker 11: have full trust in those guys. It's only been a
- 19:00Speaker 11: couple months, and I already have full trust in those guys,
- 19:02Speaker 11: the work they.
- 19:02Speaker 10: Put in every day, you know.
- 19:04Speaker 11: Um carlos lugo you know um payton brennan trevor coordinates
- 19:09Speaker 11: sawyer so all those guys i'm ready for and really excited.
- 19:12Speaker 1: For anthony mentioned um coach longley caleb longley returning to
- 19:17Speaker 1: the staff and uh they also added uh jack martyr
- 19:21Speaker 1: the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator he's the one who
- 19:23Speaker 1: had been at oregon that came in as well and
- 19:26Speaker 1: how about the experience of working with coach martyr and
- 19:28Speaker 1: the new assistants.
- 19:29Speaker 11: Yeah it was a great great addition to our team
- 19:31Speaker 11: you know uh Martyr and Lonely, they love baseball. They're
- 19:34Speaker 11: always here and always willing to help. Lonely is really
- 19:36Speaker 11: good on the hitting side. He's been here before. Martyr,
- 19:39Speaker 11: he's been at winning programs, knows how to win, knows
- 19:42Speaker 11: what it takes to win. So very excited for those guys.
- 19:44Speaker 10: To be here.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Okay, Well, here's some more from those guys a little
- 19:47Speaker 1: bit later on. Coming up next, we will bring you Inconceivable.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And there is a sports-related element. If we don't get
- 19:58Speaker 1: to an Inconceivable, it'll be the segment afterwards. We'll get
- 20:00Speaker 1: to that coming up. But we do have some Inconceivable,
- 20:02Speaker 1: including a fast food, junk food update next on Sports
- 20:05Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Here on a Texan Tuesday on Sports Radio AM 13.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Did you think we forgot about the fact that in
- 20:16Speaker 1: the 2 o'clock hour, we have amongst our return cuts.
- 20:24Speaker 2: The immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan.
- 20:25Speaker 1: 3 o'clock hour will be the iconic Willie Nelson when
- 20:29Speaker 1: we visit with Greg Tepper, the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's
- 20:33Speaker 1: Texas Football Magazine. 4 o'clock hour here from the King,
- 20:35Speaker 1: George Strait, but it's Stevie Ray here.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Maybe what you'd call a deeper cut off the album
- 20:41Speaker 3: In Step.
- 20:41Speaker 8: Here's Travis Walk. No words in this song, just a groove.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Just a, hey.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And with a lot of Stevie Ray stuff, you didn't
- 20:48Speaker 1: need words. Kind of reminds me of that line at
- 20:52Speaker 1: the end of Back to the Future, where we're going,
- 20:54Speaker 1: we don't need roads. Where Stevie Ray's concerned, we don't
- 20:59Speaker 1: need words there. Great, great immortal guitarist. Okay, I wanted
- 21:05Speaker 1: to make sure I spent enough time on this. And
- 21:09Speaker 1: so that's why I didn't put it in the inconceivable file.
- 21:13Speaker 1: But it's certainly worthy of being adjacent to the inconceivable file.
- 21:18Speaker 1: This just came down just a little while ago. A
- 21:22Speaker 1: former Auburn football staff member has been accused of stealing
- 21:30Speaker 1: trade secrets from the Tigers and sending them to their competitors.
- 21:37Speaker 1: 24-year-old David Rudolph Jenrath, I think is how his name
- 21:41Speaker 1: would be pronounced, turned himself into authorities yesterday and was
- 21:46Speaker 1: charged with theft of trade secrets and computer tampering, both
- 21:52Speaker 1: of which are felony charges. He's being held on $ 15, 000
- 21:58Speaker 1: bond at the Lee County Jail in Auburn, Alabama, according
- 22:01Speaker 1: to police. An Auburn Police Department news release today said
- 22:07Speaker 1: that a, quote, business reported that sensitive information was stolen
- 22:14Speaker 1: from the business and distributed to their competitors. The business
- 22:19Speaker 1: reported that one of their competitors received the information and
- 22:23Speaker 1: turned it over to them, end quote. Now, when you
- 22:28Speaker 1: just hear that, that quote, again, I'm going to read
- 22:32Speaker 1: the quote to you. This is from And Auburn, Alabama
- 22:36Speaker 1: is a city as well as a university. So if
- 22:42Speaker 1: you hear Auburn Police Department might not be necessarily Auburn
- 22:45Speaker 1: University Police Department, be Municipal Police, Auburn Police Department. News
- 22:51Speaker 1: released today said, quote, A business reported that sensitive information
- 22:55Speaker 1: was stolen from the business and distributed to their competitors.
- 23:00Speaker 1: The business reported that one of their competitors received the
- 23:03Speaker 1: information and turned it over to them. Sounds like something
- 23:06Speaker 1: you'd hear that involved a Fortune 500 company. Well, college
- 23:10Speaker 1: football programs these days, being what they are.
- 23:13Speaker 8: Yeah, especially in the SEC.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Now, the police report did not identify the schools that
- 23:20Speaker 1: allegedly received the stolen information from Jenrath. A complaint alleges
- 23:26Speaker 1: that the incident occurred on July 19th at the Auburn
- 23:29Speaker 1: Athletics Complex. Auburn officials declined comment today. Sources told ESPN
- 23:35Speaker 1: Today that Jenrath allegedly sent material related to Auburn's recruiting
- 23:41Speaker 1: evaluations to multiple schools.
- 23:45Speaker 2: The information did not.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Include material related to Auburn's name, image, and likeness deals,
- 23:50Speaker 1: revenue-sharing distributions, or its playbooks. The source said Jenrath, who
- 23:55Speaker 1: is from Franklin, Tennessee, was not a full-time member of
- 24:00Speaker 1: the Auburn Athletics Department. Charging documents allege that while employed
- 24:07Speaker 1: at Auburn, Jenrath, quote, obtained and or retained confidential documents
- 24:13Speaker 1: proprietary information consisting of Auburn University athletics information and or
- 24:18Speaker 1: knowingly made a copy or reproduction of Auburn University athletics
- 24:23Speaker 1: trade secrets and communicate or transmit a secret without the
- 24:27Speaker 1: owner's consent, end quote. Jenrath is also accused of, quote, disclosing, using, controlling,
- 24:33Speaker 1: or taking computer programs and data with the intent to harass, quote,
- 24:39Speaker 1: Auburn University Athletics by disclosing trade secrets and transmitted those
- 24:43Speaker 1: secrets without the owner's consent, end quote. Jenrath has a
- 24:47Speaker 1: LinkedIn profile. It's been removed from the service. It had
- 24:50Speaker 1: indicated that he worked in Auburn's football program as a
- 24:52Speaker 1: player personnel scouting assistant from January to June, helping evaluate
- 24:56Speaker 1: running backs and special teams. He attended Tennessee, where he
- 25:01Speaker 1: studied sports analytics and applied artificial intelligence.
- 25:04Speaker 12: Intelligence.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Studied computer science too, evidently. This is maybe a case, Craig,
- 25:11Speaker 3: of a little bit of a salty exit. I'm reading
- 25:16Speaker 3: more about this through the on three reporting that's happened
- 25:20Speaker 3: with Justin Hawkinson there with Auburn Sports Football. He was
- 25:23Speaker 3: let go from Alex Golish's staff after kind of being
- 25:28Speaker 3: demoted when he came in, but being allowed to stay
- 25:30Speaker 3: on because at the Super Regionals, They found him in
- 25:34Speaker 3: the student section when he claimed he was missing the
- 25:36Speaker 3: game sick or missing Auburn football events sick. So he
- 25:42Speaker 3: gets let go. All of a sudden, there's these tensions
- 25:44Speaker 3: between him and the staff. And in July, he sends
- 25:47Speaker 3: an email with the confidential information and with Alex Golish's
- 25:51Speaker 3: address as the subject line.
- 25:53Speaker 10: Wow.
- 25:54Speaker 3: So this is a case of, well, I don't know
- 25:57Speaker 3: if it's revenge or just anger or kind.
- 26:00Speaker 7: Of having a little break. All of the above.
- 26:02Speaker 2: So it's definitely industrial espionage. Put it that way.
- 26:05Speaker 3: So that's how the it's interesting, because if other schools
- 26:08Speaker 3: were receiving these emails any earlier, which we might find
- 26:11Speaker 3: out in this investigation, we don't know.
- 26:13Speaker 8: They might have kept it and use it to their advantage.
- 26:16Speaker 3: But I think a lot of them then apparently saw
- 26:19Speaker 3: that Golish's home address was in this subject line and thought,
- 26:22Speaker 3: we need to send this to the police department.
- 26:24Speaker 8: It's the right thing to do.
- 26:25Speaker 7: Right.
- 26:25Speaker 8: That might have crossed some kind of a line on this.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Makes you wonder which school sent it in.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:32Speaker 8: And which schools were left out?
- 26:33Speaker 3: If you're only sending it to 11, are those their
- 26:36Speaker 3: 11 opponents? Are those 11 SEC schools? Are the folks
- 26:41Speaker 3: that wear crimson receiving that? I mean, are the Georgia
- 26:44Speaker 3: Bulldogs getting wind of this? And before anybody says, well,
- 26:47Speaker 3: wait a minute, Cam Coleman left. And you did say
- 26:50Speaker 3: that was already done before this stuff happened back in July.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Before anybody... brings that up.
- 26:56Speaker 8: This is insane.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Yeah, so keep an eye on that.
- 27:00Speaker 1: To the text line, somebody said, Chris Fowler has a
- 27:06Speaker 1: nightcap clip on his Instagram on Saturday nights where he
- 27:09Speaker 1: gives observations of the day in college football. I agree
- 27:12Speaker 1: with his take on the Texas game versus Tennessee. He said, quote,
- 27:14Speaker 1: Texas should not have to apologize for an ugly SEC win.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I also agree when he said, quote, a lot of penalties,
- 27:20Speaker 1: mental mistakes, wasn't pretty. Mental mistakes is another way politely
- 27:24Speaker 1: saying the team is undisciplined. It can be. It can
- 27:27Speaker 1: be other things too. Mental mistakes if you run a
- 27:31Speaker 1: wrong route or make a wrong read. It can be that.
- 27:33Speaker 1: It can be all of the above. Both things can
- 27:35Speaker 1: be true. No question about that. And Sark brought that
- 27:39Speaker 1: up yesterday as well. I don't think Chris Fowler is
- 27:41Speaker 1: breaking any news with what he's saying. I don't think
- 27:45Speaker 1: there's anything unusual about that.
- 27:50Speaker 3: I would tell our texter as well, Cole Kubelik does
- 27:53Speaker 3: a great job every week tweeting out breakdowns, highlighting individual players.
- 27:57Speaker 3: And I liked what he wrote up about the Longhorn
- 28:01Speaker 3: performance on both sides of the ball, particularly highlighting specific guys,
- 28:05Speaker 3: Jelani McDonald, Raheem Biles, and obviously Colin Simmons, who took
- 28:08Speaker 3: over at times.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 1: So it's good text from you there. And I think
- 28:15Speaker 1: Chris Fowler does... make a solid effort to play things
- 28:20Speaker 1: down the middle. I mean, he was highly critical, as
- 28:22Speaker 1: was Kirk Herbstreit, about the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Colin Simmons.
- 28:28Speaker 1: And then they, at the end of the game, were
- 28:30Speaker 1: praising Simmons for what he did. By the way, Colin Simmons,
- 28:33Speaker 1: who was not named SEC Defensive Player of the Week
- 28:36Speaker 1: with the SEC record, now five and a half sacks,
- 28:39Speaker 1: retroactively given credit for a half a sack on the
- 28:42Speaker 1: one with Hiro Kanu in the replay show that he
- 28:44Speaker 1: was involved with it. was named National Defensive Player of
- 28:50Speaker 1: the Week by a couple of agencies, the Bednarik Award
- 28:52Speaker 1: and a couple others as well. So may not have
- 28:54Speaker 1: been in the SEC, but he was on the national
- 28:56Speaker 1: side as well.
- 28:57Speaker 8: Not the only SEC mistake this week. We can leave
- 28:59Speaker 8: that there.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
- 29:01Speaker 7: All right.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Hour number two coming up, we're going to visit with
- 29:04Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 29:09Speaker 2: And coming up in.
- 29:11Speaker 1: The 4 o'clock hour, we hear from Jerry Jones. All
- 29:13Speaker 1: that and more coming up right here on Sports Radio
- 29:15Speaker 1: AM 1300, The Zone. Second hour of the program here
- 29:30Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Craig Wade
- 29:34Speaker 1: joined by the producer, Jake Herman. Coming up in a
- 29:38Speaker 1: little bit, Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
- 29:43Speaker 1: to join us talking football of the collegiate and high
- 29:47Speaker 1: school variety in the state of Texas. However, we're going
- 29:49Speaker 1: to go over to collegiate baseball. Longboards had media availability yesterday,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and they're going through practice And it's interesting. They have
- 29:57Speaker 1: today and tomorrow to practice on the field. They moved
- 30:01Speaker 1: their fall workout dates up by about a month, really,
- 30:05Speaker 1: to I think it was around August 24th, to where
- 30:07Speaker 1: they normally start. The reason for that is they're going
- 30:10Speaker 1: to replace the field turf at UFC Udish Fall Field.
- 30:13Speaker 1: They're getting a brand new field turf laid down. They're
- 30:15Speaker 1: also going to do a little bit of remodeling toward
- 30:17Speaker 1: the left field fences. Maybe have them come in a
- 30:19Speaker 1: little more, try to make it a little more engaging
- 30:21Speaker 1: fan experience. We'll hear more about that from Jim Schlossningel
- 30:24Speaker 1: coming up on Thursday. But for the players, with 14
- 30:30Speaker 1: returning players off that team that went to Omaha in
- 30:32Speaker 1: the College World Series, a lot of excitement about it.
- 30:34Speaker 2: And that includes.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Sam Cozart, what a job he did on the mound.
- 30:39Speaker 1: And we heard from him last hour, but asked, you know,
- 30:43Speaker 1: with that fastball, with that slider, the way it can go,
- 30:46Speaker 1: he was asked, is he adding anything to his pitching arsenal?
- 30:50Speaker 5: I'm kind of just having fun right now.
- 30:51Speaker 9: I'm throwing a lot of different pitches, mixing in a sinker,
- 30:54Speaker 9: a few different cutters, just for fun, honestly. And if
- 30:57Speaker 9: they stick, they stick. If not, I really like where
- 30:59Speaker 9: I'm at with my arsenal anyway. So it worked pretty well.
- 31:03Speaker 7: Okay. All right.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So then he was asked about these upgrades that I
- 31:08Speaker 1: just mentioned for USC Udish Falk Field. And, you know,
- 31:15Speaker 1: he was asked about the upgrades and then also getting
- 31:18Speaker 1: a chance to pitch at Dell Diamond.
- 31:20Speaker 10: I think it's going to be great just to have
- 31:22Speaker 10: a different experience, a different view.
- 31:24Speaker 9: We're really excited to have the field really upgraded and
- 31:28Speaker 9: looking great for the season. And being able to go
- 31:30Speaker 9: to Dell Diamond to have experience on a natural surface
- 31:33Speaker 9: and also being able to go to the football field
- 31:34Speaker 9: as pitchers and throw there on days that we don't
- 31:37Speaker 9: go to Dell Diamond would be a great time.
- 31:39Speaker 10: I think we're going to have.
- 31:40Speaker 9: A lot of fun experiences and a lot of different
- 31:42Speaker 9: experiences that we didn't get to have last year.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Specific question about maybe that left field wall being moved
- 31:48Speaker 1: in a few feet, as Jim Schlossnagel talked about yesterday.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Pitchers might not normally like that sort of thing.
- 31:53Speaker 9: I honestly didn't know it was coming in, but I'm
- 31:55Speaker 9: excited about the things they're going to add around it
- 31:57Speaker 9: for the visitor bullpen, getting a better atmosphere for the field,
- 32:00Speaker 9: a better experience for the fans as well.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 32:03Speaker 1: There are new catchers, and you always talk about the
- 32:05Speaker 1: catching position being very, very important. So how does Coach
- 32:09Speaker 1: Starr feel about that?
- 32:10Speaker 2: It's been great.
- 32:11Speaker 9: Overall, you know, Ian Armstrong has truly bought in. He's really,
- 32:16Speaker 9: really invested in the pitchers, and he's bringing along the
- 32:20Speaker 9: younger guys to learn how to lead a staff, and
- 32:23Speaker 9: to be a part of a staff as well because
- 32:24Speaker 9: they're not just position players.
- 32:25Speaker 10: They're not just leaders. They're also a part of our staff.
- 32:27Speaker 9: That is what makes our pitching staff so special is
- 32:30Speaker 9: they're a part of us.
- 32:31Speaker 1: When it comes to leadership on the team, some of
- 32:33Speaker 1: the returning veterans, even a sophomore like Cozart, is named.
- 32:37Speaker 2: So is another sophomore.
- 32:38Speaker 1: We're going to hear from him coming up here in
- 32:41Speaker 1: a moment, Anthony Pack Jr. But he was asked about
- 32:45Speaker 1: the combination of those two sophomores now seen as leaders
- 32:48Speaker 1: on the team.
- 32:49Speaker 9: You know, me and Pac have leaned on each other
- 32:50Speaker 9: a lot, whether it be decisions about how the team
- 32:53Speaker 9: is going to be run, what the culture needs to be,
- 32:55Speaker 9: or how to enforce the culture. But at the end
- 32:58Speaker 9: of the day, it's just leaning on the older guys.
- 33:01Speaker 9: Even I still talk to Luke Harrison to this day
- 33:03Speaker 9: because he did it a lot longer than me. And
- 33:05Speaker 9: just leaning on the wisdom of others to help me
- 33:08Speaker 9: make the best decision for the team and also letting
- 33:10Speaker 9: the team make the decision.
- 33:11Speaker 1: And when it comes to leaning on somebody, he has
- 33:13Speaker 1: no better source of another fellow pitcher on that roster
- 33:17Speaker 1: to lean on than Dylan Volantis.
- 33:18Speaker 9: Dylan is a very special human to me. He really
- 33:21Speaker 9: does help me in all parts of my life. Me
- 33:24Speaker 9: and him are incredibly close, and he always gives me
- 33:28Speaker 9: a little bit of a grateful view of life. When
- 33:32Speaker 9: I take things a little too serious, he makes me
- 33:33Speaker 9: grateful for just being here.
- 33:35Speaker 7: Okay, all right.
- 33:35Speaker 2: He does take some things serious, and he.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Is being viewed in that prism as somewhat of a leader.
- 33:42Speaker 2: So with the new players.
- 33:44Speaker 1: And the recruits coming in and the transfer portal players,
- 33:47Speaker 1: you know, those guys, you know, he's.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Got the big old beard. Did they think he was
- 33:50Speaker 2: a coach?
- 33:51Speaker 9: A few times there's a few guys they didn't really
- 33:53Speaker 9: know what to expect. But then once we got into
- 33:56Speaker 9: it as a team, it was fun. And they've kind
- 33:59Speaker 9: of gotten over that. And a few of the recruits
- 34:02Speaker 9: thought I was a coach for a second.
- 34:03Speaker 2: It's kind of funny.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Okay.
- 34:04Speaker 4: All right.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And finally, there's the issue of being excited and revved
- 34:08Speaker 1: up to play Houston on Saturday in this exhibition.
- 34:11Speaker 9: Yeah, I think I'm really excited just because I've been
- 34:14Speaker 9: sitting back watching everyone compete so far, and I can't
- 34:16Speaker 9: wait to see us compete against another team. I've seen
- 34:19Speaker 9: us competing against ourselves, and it's been incredible. I just
- 34:22Speaker 9: want to see it really transition into a game. I
- 34:24Speaker 9: think it's going to be really fun, especially.
- 34:26Speaker 12: For the older guys.
- 34:27Speaker 9: We're going to be able to just really enjoy watching
- 34:29Speaker 9: these freshmen come into their own and really show what
- 34:32Speaker 9: they're about.
- 34:32Speaker 1: There was an interesting comment Jim Schlossnagel made yesterday about
- 34:36Speaker 1: how Cozart, and Volanis and Anthony Pack Jr. were viewed
- 34:42Speaker 1: not only as leaders by the new guys coming in,
- 34:45Speaker 1: the freshmen, those signees, the recruits, and those who have
- 34:48Speaker 1: come in through the portal, but almost as celebrities. And
- 34:52Speaker 1: Pack was asked, did he get that vibe, feeling like
- 34:55Speaker 1: a celebrity among all these new faces?
- 34:57Speaker 11: Yeah, I wouldn't say celebrity, but I would say, you know,
- 34:59Speaker 11: kind of respected, you know, had a pretty good season.
- 35:01Speaker 11: And I just want to show, you know, what it
- 35:03Speaker 11: takes because it didn't just happen, you know, it came
- 35:05Speaker 11: with hard work, came with discipline. So I think just
- 35:07Speaker 11: showing that With everybody, the high schoolers that come in
- 35:10Speaker 11: on their visits, it's huge.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Okay, so he comes off a fabulous freshman year. What's
- 35:16Speaker 1: the key to having a really good freshman season? Yeah,
- 35:18Speaker 1: I think just a routine.
- 35:20Speaker 11: Having my hitting routine, my defensive routine, working with all
- 35:23Speaker 11: the coaches, the mental side of the game.
- 35:25Speaker 10: I think a lot of last year was mental.
- 35:26Speaker 11: It was just my mentality, how to flush games, and
- 35:30Speaker 11: how to just compete at the highest level.
- 35:31Speaker 1: He was also asked about, you know, being in that
- 35:35Speaker 1: outfield and now perhaps transitioning in the center field and
- 35:38Speaker 1: was asked about what the crowds were like in the postseason,
- 35:42Speaker 1: the outfield there in the Yeti yard and the built
- 35:45Speaker 1: for tough tailgate area beyond the outfield fences, the type
- 35:48Speaker 1: of effect it had on him and the team.
- 35:50Speaker 10: Oh, yeah, I don't I don't think it mattered how
- 35:52Speaker 10: far the fence was. I think I was going to
- 35:53Speaker 10: hear them. They were behind me.
- 35:55Speaker 11: Um the atmosphere was crazy and you know i gotta
- 35:58Speaker 11: go back there i gotta go back to the super
- 36:00Speaker 11: regional regional just so i can feel that again but
- 36:02Speaker 11: i think bringing in the fence a little and make
- 36:04Speaker 11: that you know a little plus but i think no
- 36:06Speaker 11: matter how far it was i heard them and they're behind.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Me okay all right and then he was asked about
- 36:11Speaker 1: the rather unique obstacles that came up in the offseason.
- 36:14Speaker 11: I think just you know it's really hot out here
- 36:16Speaker 11: i think you know losing losing weight um sweating a
- 36:19Speaker 11: lot so i think just maintaining my weight you know
- 36:22Speaker 11: uh being able to eat every day you know i
- 36:23Speaker 11: have my nutritionist you know Telling me to send pictures
- 36:26Speaker 11: of my food, just to make sure what I'm eating, because.
- 36:29Speaker 10: Sometimes I may not have the best nutrition. So I think.
- 36:32Speaker 11: Just maintaining my weight and putting on muscle with Coach
- 36:35Speaker 11: Couch in the weight room.
- 36:36Speaker 7: Okay, all right.
- 36:37Speaker 2: And then one more from Anthony Pack Jr.
- 36:40Speaker 1: He was asked, he developed more power playing for that
- 36:42Speaker 1: USA team in the summer. So how has he become
- 36:47Speaker 1: a better and more prolific power hitter?
- 36:50Speaker 10: I still say I'm not a power hitter, to be honest.
- 36:52Speaker 11: All my home runs came on accident, I promise you.
- 36:54Speaker 11: Just sticking to my approach. Coach Cousins in the weight
- 36:57Speaker 11: room put a couple pounds on me. So I think
- 36:59Speaker 11: just sticking to my approach and not trying to hit
- 37:01Speaker 11: home runs.
- 37:02Speaker 10: Is when I hit all my home runs.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Okay, that'll work.
- 37:05Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Big things are obviously expected of
- 37:08Speaker 1: Anthony Pack Jr. in the coming season. All right, and again,
- 37:12Speaker 1: coming up on Thursday, we'll hear some specifics from Jim
- 37:15Speaker 1: Schlossnagel about... the ballpark itself, and then the exhibition at
- 37:20Speaker 1: Dell Diamond and things like that. All right, coming up next,
- 37:23Speaker 1: we go back to football and we visit with Greg Tepper,
- 37:26Speaker 1: editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine with our Tuesdays
- 37:29Speaker 1: with Tepp feature.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Coming up next on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 37:36Speaker 7: We're back.
- 37:37Speaker 13: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 37:40Speaker 13: and voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way.
- 37:43Speaker 12: The all-round lead.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Okay, Texan Tuesday, as we mentioned, in the 2 o'clock hour,
- 37:59Speaker 1: we hear from the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan on a
- 38:03Speaker 1: return cut. The 4 o'clock hour, the King George Strait,
- 38:06Speaker 1: always in the 3 o'clock hour for the iconic Willie
- 38:09Speaker 1: Nelson here.
- 38:10Speaker 3: And some of Willie Nelson's best cuts have come from
- 38:13Speaker 3: the covers he's done on other iconic songs, and here
- 38:15Speaker 3: he is on Nat King Cole's Autumn Leaves.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Well, it may not feel completely like autumn yet, given
- 38:23Speaker 1: a couple of days, by the way.
- 38:24Speaker 2: We could have a lot of heavy rain across the
- 38:26Speaker 2: state of Texas.
- 38:27Speaker 1: However, the high school football season has hit the halfway
- 38:31Speaker 1: mark of the regular season, and college football is a
- 38:34Speaker 1: third of the way through its regular season. So, as always,
- 38:38Speaker 1: Tuesdays with Tepper, and we're pleased to welcome the editor-in-chief
- 38:41Speaker 1: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, Greg Tepper, to the program.
- 38:44Speaker 1: I always feel like all is right with the world
- 38:47Speaker 1: when we've got Willie Nelson, and Tepper together starting out
- 38:50Speaker 1: in this three o'clock hour, right?
- 38:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:53Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 38:54Speaker 5: You know, look, we're all good at our own things, right?
- 38:58Speaker 5: Like there's, there's an important thing. You probably would not ask, uh,
- 39:03Speaker 5: Willie to break down district 11, three.
- 39:05Speaker 2: A division two, probably not.
- 39:06Speaker 5: And in the same way, please do not ask me to, to,
- 39:10Speaker 5: to sing or play or play the guitar.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, and duly noted off of that. I want
- 39:16Speaker 1: to start off with something that really I was equal
- 39:21Speaker 1: parts curious and amused about, and it was the piece
- 39:24Speaker 1: that Mike Craven put together on, and for folks who
- 39:29Speaker 1: don't know what I'm talking about, if you go to texasfootball.com,
- 39:32Speaker 1: there you'll see the great stuff from Dave Campbell's Texas
- 39:35Speaker 1: Football Magazine. You can subscribe and get lots of great
- 39:37Speaker 1: content and hard copies of the magazine and access to
- 39:40Speaker 1: watching Live games there if you go to TexasFootball.com. But
- 39:44Speaker 1: he did a piece entitled What We Got Right, What
- 39:49Speaker 1: We Got Wrong, revisiting our 2026 predictions.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Now, here's the amusing part.
- 39:55Speaker 1: This thing was released at midnight last night or starting
- 39:59Speaker 1: today on September 29th. You know, I'm used to seeing
- 40:03Speaker 1: that kind of thing in December or January. No grass
- 40:08Speaker 1: grows under the feet of Mike Craven. And he's already
- 40:10Speaker 1: at the one third pole saying, here's what we got right.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Here's what we got wrong about college football. Still with
- 40:16Speaker 1: two thirds of the regular season left to be played.
- 40:19Speaker 5: Well, and a few of them that he points out,
- 40:21Speaker 5: I think are, you know, some of them are still projections.
- 40:24Speaker 5: One of them, he says that UTSA is going to
- 40:26Speaker 5: finish with the most wins in the G6 in Texas.
- 40:29Speaker 5: And that obviously still remains to be seen, right? You know,
- 40:33Speaker 5: I think that so far, they're looking like a team
- 40:35Speaker 5: that could win eight or nine games, and I'm not
- 40:37Speaker 5: sure there's another team. Out there, the G6, it's going
- 40:39Speaker 5: to win eight or nine games, especially considering UTSA has
- 40:42Speaker 5: already got a win over Texas State, which is probably
- 40:44Speaker 5: the chief challenger to that crown. That's part of it. Others,
- 40:48Speaker 5: I think, you're capable of saying that there's at least
- 40:53Speaker 5: a comfortable verdict on it. One of them was that
- 40:56Speaker 5: Craven's been pretty clear he thought that Texas Tech was
- 40:58Speaker 5: going to take at least a moderate step back from
- 41:00Speaker 5: last year. And I think that, obviously, the record is
- 41:04Speaker 5: what it is, right? They're undefeated. We don't apologize for wins.
- 41:07Speaker 5: But at the same time, they have not been that
- 41:11Speaker 5: dominant force that they were last year. I think it's
- 41:15Speaker 5: very clear to see why. Obviously, the offense has been okay.
- 41:20Speaker 5: It's been fits and starts, obviously. But the biggest thing
- 41:24Speaker 5: is that they do not have that defensive war caddy.
- 41:26Speaker 5: They do not have a David Bailey. They do not
- 41:28Speaker 5: have a Jacob Rodriguez. And that is kind of laid bare,
- 41:31Speaker 5: I think. He also said that he thought that Baylor
- 41:34Speaker 5: would get off to a fast start, and they have.
- 41:36Speaker 5: They're 3-1 right now. But the other thing is that,
- 41:40Speaker 5: as he notes, they'd get off to a fast start.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Doesn't mean they'd have a fast finish because their schedule
- 41:45Speaker 5: gets way tougher from here on out. But a 3-1
- 41:49Speaker 5: start is where they need to go. The thing that
- 41:51Speaker 5: I think is really interesting on his part is that
- 41:56Speaker 5: as far as what he was wrong about were the
- 42:00Speaker 5: two flagship programs in Texas. There's A & M and
- 42:04Speaker 5: basically saying that he thought A & M would win
- 42:07Speaker 5: nine games. He has now backpedaled pretty significantly off of
- 42:09Speaker 5: that and said, you know, I think that obviously the
- 42:12Speaker 5: Marcel Reed situation is such that, and the schedule is
- 42:15Speaker 5: only going to get tougher, that they are going, they're
- 42:18Speaker 5: in a really tough way. And it's going to be,
- 42:20Speaker 5: I mean, obviously they've got the Citadel left, which is
- 42:23Speaker 5: probably the only absolute guaranteed win left on the schedule.
- 42:27Speaker 5: And then the other one was about Arch Manning and
- 42:30Speaker 5: saying that Arch Manning, he said Arch Manning will be
- 42:31Speaker 5: the best quarterback in Texas at the college ranks. I
- 42:34Speaker 5: don't want to speak for Craven. I don't think he
- 42:36Speaker 5: thinks Manning's been bad, but I think when you take
- 42:39Speaker 5: a look at what Kevin Jennings has done at SMU,
- 42:41Speaker 5: who was our second team all Texas College to start
- 42:43Speaker 5: the year, I think if he could go back, he'd
- 42:45Speaker 5: probably flip those at least through the first four games.
- 42:49Speaker 1: I agree with just about everything he said. The only
- 42:52Speaker 1: bone of contention I would even have with him on
- 42:54Speaker 1: the quarterback situation is, have you looked at Kevin Jennings' turnovers?
- 43:00Speaker 10: Yes.
- 43:00Speaker 5: Yes.
- 43:01Speaker 1: I mean, if you look at the fumbles and the interceptions,
- 43:03Speaker 1: Manning has three interceptions.
- 43:06Speaker 2: And one of them is at the end.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Of the half in the end zone at Texas State
- 43:10Speaker 1: when Emmitt Mosley slipped and the DB made a good
- 43:14Speaker 1: play on the ball. Then you have that weird one
- 43:16Speaker 1: to Cam Coleman where he bounces off the turf and
- 43:18Speaker 1: the ball pops in the air and Ohio State picks
- 43:20Speaker 1: it up. And then last week, Coleman just had the
- 43:22Speaker 1: ball ripped out of his grasp. on a deep route
- 43:24Speaker 1: out there that Sark said yesterday he would take every time,
- 43:27Speaker 1: take that throw.
- 43:28Speaker 2: So there's that. I would, and he did mention this guy.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Give him credit for this.
- 43:32Speaker 1: I think Connor Wigman's having the best season of any
- 43:34Speaker 1: quarterback collegiately in Texas right now.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Yeah, Conor Wigman's been great for Houston. He's been, at least,
- 43:40Speaker 5: I would say the word that I would use for
- 43:42Speaker 5: him is he's been the most consistent. That I think
- 43:44Speaker 5: that when you take a look at the peaks, the
- 43:46Speaker 5: peaks for Manning and for Jennings have been higher. But
- 43:52Speaker 5: the valleys, I think, would also, you would say, have
- 43:54Speaker 5: been lower. For Conor Wigman, now a salty veteran in
- 43:57Speaker 5: the college ranks, he is kind of steady as he goes.
- 44:00Speaker 5: You kind of know what you're getting from him. And
- 44:01Speaker 5: there is certainly a value to that, that you know
- 44:04Speaker 5: he's going to go out there and he's going to
- 44:05Speaker 5: take care of you. You know what you're getting from him.
- 44:07Speaker 5: As opposed to with Manning, where he's flashed and looked like,
- 44:10Speaker 5: oh my gosh, he's a Heisman Trophy winner. And other
- 44:12Speaker 5: times you've been like, come on, got to get more
- 44:14Speaker 5: from the quarterback spot. I think you're right. I think
- 44:16Speaker 5: Conor Wigman has been the real steady force as far
- 44:20Speaker 5: as college football quarterbacks in Texas.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Visiting with Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 44:25Speaker 2: All right, let's jump to high school.
- 44:26Speaker 1: We are at the numerical midway mark of the season
- 44:30Speaker 1: for most schools. of the teams across the state. And
- 44:34Speaker 1: this is a side note. I'm going to get back
- 44:35Speaker 1: to it. I want to ask you about the top
- 44:37Speaker 1: 10 rankings thing. And we'll get to this when we
- 44:41Speaker 1: look at games. Is this like a Niagara Falls tidal
- 44:47Speaker 1: wave of open dates this week? And my goodness, is
- 44:51Speaker 1: 4A Division II even playing this week when you look
- 44:54Speaker 1: at some of this?
- 44:55Speaker 7: So, so.
- 44:57Speaker 5: We saw this coming in about March, when the schedules
- 45:01Speaker 5: really started taking shape. We're like, boy, there's always a
- 45:04Speaker 5: one week in the middle of the season where there's
- 45:05Speaker 5: a ton of open dates. But this felt like it
- 45:08Speaker 5: was even more. I'm calling it the bipocalypse. Guys, if
- 45:15Speaker 5: it feels like there's a ton of open dates, it's because...
- 45:17Speaker 5: 39% of UIL teams are off this week. Like almost
- 45:23Speaker 5: 40% of the whole state is off, which is, you know,
- 45:29Speaker 5: it is, I would say we were actually doing my podcast,
- 45:31Speaker 5: Tap and Step with Matt Stepp yesterday. And I said,
- 45:33Speaker 5: I'm not going to tell you it's a great week.
- 45:35Speaker 5: I'm not going to tell you it's a good week,
- 45:36Speaker 5: but it is a not bad week. And it's an opportunity,
- 45:39Speaker 5: I think, if you are the fan of only one
- 45:42Speaker 5: team or you go to the same game, go expand
- 45:45Speaker 5: your horizons a little bit. So go see what else
- 45:47Speaker 5: is going on.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Yeah, for Jake Herman, the voice of the Bastrop Bears,
- 45:51Speaker 1: the bye week probably comes at a good time, right, Jake,
- 45:53Speaker 1: with some of the beatings and the injuries the Bears
- 45:56Speaker 1: have had to deal with?
- 45:58Speaker 3: Yeah, they were not planning on going to Brenham without
- 46:01Speaker 3: starting quarterback Weston Nielsen before the season, that's for sure.
- 46:04Speaker 3: It's not just Nielsen, it's on both lines, it's in
- 46:07Speaker 3: the linebacking core, it's in the secondary where Bastrop is
- 46:10Speaker 3: banged up right now, so they're really hoping to get healthy.
- 46:13Speaker 2: I started to say, they're hoping to get some guys back,
- 46:15Speaker 2: aren't they?
- 46:15Speaker 3: They should have a bulk of their key contributors back
- 46:18Speaker 3: within the next few weeks.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Well, and here's the thing. There's another side to that,
- 46:23Speaker 5: which is taking on Brenham, which is a team that
- 46:26Speaker 5: is a house on fire right now. Like, they look
- 46:29Speaker 5: every bit the part of the team that we've thought
- 46:31Speaker 5: for the past couple of years could be. They are, like,
- 46:34Speaker 5: reaching that potential right now. So, yeah, not a great
- 46:36Speaker 5: time to be banged up taking on the Bears.
- 46:39Speaker 2: All right, all right. Let's take a break.
- 46:43Speaker 1: When we come back, I've got some other things I
- 46:44Speaker 1: want to get to with Greg Tepper here on the
- 46:47Speaker 1: high school front here on this Texan Tuesday on Sports
- 46:51Speaker 1: Radio AM 1300 The Zone and the iHeartRadio app. And
- 46:56Speaker 1: we continue on a Texan Tuesday visiting with Greg Tepper,
- 46:59Speaker 1: editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. We talk about
- 47:02Speaker 1: college football in the state. We've moved on to high
- 47:04Speaker 1: school now. Let me get to your top ten poll.
- 47:07Speaker 1: And the reason why I say this is that we're
- 47:10Speaker 1: kind of at the midway mark of the season. Your
- 47:15Speaker 1: top three remain the same. You did a flip-flop with
- 47:18Speaker 1: Allen moving or the top four, excuse me, there. In fact,
- 47:22Speaker 1: looking at your top seven actually remain the same on this.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I'm curious to get your thoughts. If you're asking me,
- 47:30Speaker 1: and I've looked at Jerry Forrest's computer rankings, if you're
- 47:33Speaker 1: asking me, I think the best team in the state
- 47:37Speaker 1: is Allen right now. That said, Waxhatchee's been number one
- 47:40Speaker 1: from the start. They've been impressive enough. No reason to
- 47:43Speaker 1: just knock about. It's the same reason folks are asking
- 47:46Speaker 1: the question about Texas. You know, they're number one, and
- 47:49Speaker 1: they didn't blow Tennessee out, but it was a conference
- 47:51Speaker 1: win on the road in a tough environment. They stay
- 47:53Speaker 1: at the number one spot. And North Shore, number two.
- 47:56Speaker 1: North Crowley, number three. Allen, number four. San Antonio Johnson,
- 48:00Speaker 1: number five. KD6 and Fort Bend. Ridge Point, number seven.
- 48:04Speaker 1: The change comes below that.
- 48:06Speaker 2: With C.E.
- 48:06Speaker 1: King 8, Coppell, your alma mater, there at number 9,
- 48:10Speaker 1: and Denton Guyer at number 10. How about your thoughts overall,
- 48:14Speaker 1: especially on those first seven who are all unbeaten and
- 48:19Speaker 1: holding their spots?
- 48:20Speaker 5: So yeah, I mean, look, right now, and we've been
- 48:24Speaker 5: hearing from people saying, why isn't this team? I got
- 48:26Speaker 5: a note from somebody saying, how's Katie not a top
- 48:28Speaker 5: five team and stuff like that? And here's the thing.
- 48:31Speaker 5: My argument would be, I agree. I think that there's
- 48:34Speaker 5: a tier here that you would take, and you take
- 48:36Speaker 5: a look at those top seven teams. I even include
- 48:39Speaker 5: CE King into that at the eighth spot. and say, okay,
- 48:43Speaker 5: any order you want to put those guys in, I
- 48:45Speaker 5: don't necessarily have a huge problem with. For example, my
- 48:48Speaker 5: own personal opinion, and I want to make sure it's
- 48:51Speaker 5: not recency bias and not just being in the same
- 48:53Speaker 5: building as them. I saw Galena Park North Shore last
- 48:57Speaker 5: week in person. If you ask me right now who
- 48:59Speaker 5: the best team in 6A is, it's the North Shore Mustangs.
- 49:02Speaker 5: They are unreal defensively. Defensively, absolutely smothered in Tascosita. And
- 49:08Speaker 5: the offense, they're not star-studded like they normally are, but man,
- 49:13Speaker 5: they just run the ball well. Their quarterback, Javoris Taylor,
- 49:17Speaker 5: has taken a step. Their offensive line is a bunch
- 49:19Speaker 5: of road graders. I just look at North shore. And
- 49:21Speaker 5: right now that's, I think that's the best team in
- 49:23Speaker 5: the state. And also I don't think I could necessarily
- 49:27Speaker 5: rank them. You know, if you want to rank Allen
- 49:29Speaker 5: number one, or you want to rank San Antonio Johnson,
- 49:31Speaker 5: who's been really good. Number one, or you want to
- 49:33Speaker 5: keep walks out your North Carolina. I'm not going to
- 49:35Speaker 5: argue with you. I think that there's kind of a
- 49:37Speaker 5: tier of groups at the very top of elite teams
- 49:40Speaker 5: in 6A. And I think right now I'd probably look
- 49:42Speaker 5: at nine deep as far as our rankings are concerned.
- 49:45Speaker 7: Okay.
- 49:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 49:46Speaker 1: I want to ask you about a couple other Metroplex teams.
- 49:48Speaker 1: We haven't really talked about them much. Well, first, your
- 49:53Speaker 1: alma mater, Coppell. I want to ask you about the
- 49:56Speaker 1: teams at 9, 10, and 12. Coppell, Denton-Geyer, and the
- 50:00Speaker 1: Louisville Fighting Farmers, who are number 12.
- 50:02Speaker 2: In your rankings.
- 50:04Speaker 5: Yeah. Okay, we'll start with Coppell. You know, it makes
- 50:08Speaker 5: me a little uncomfortable to talk.
- 50:10Speaker 2: About my alma mater, but.
- 50:13Speaker 5: But they're really good. They're one loss on the road
- 50:17Speaker 5: by one score to Waxahachie, right? Pretty good. Carter Zingelman,
- 50:21Speaker 5: their quarterback, is the real stinking deal. He looks the part, 6'5, 200,
- 50:28Speaker 5: and can run. He can throw it. He is the
- 50:32Speaker 5: real deal. I think they're going to be in the
- 50:33Speaker 5: mix and a team that I think is going to
- 50:35Speaker 5: be worth paying attention to deep into November 2021. Denton
- 50:40Speaker 5: Guyer is really interesting. I love what they do defensively.
- 50:42Speaker 5: Their front with Kyron Haywood is really, really strong. Zane
- 50:47Speaker 5: Rowe as well, fantastic. And then Louisville. Now, Louisville is
- 50:50Speaker 5: in an interesting spot because you may look at our rankings,
- 50:53Speaker 5: you may see that the Louisville Fighting Farmers have a
- 50:55Speaker 5: 1-3 record. They are technically 1-3. It's because they had
- 51:00Speaker 5: to forfeit three games. Their quarterback was ruled ineligible. Now,
- 51:04Speaker 5: he moved in from Oklahoma, and I think the DEC
- 51:08Speaker 5: ruled him ineligible, and then the state.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Said as well.
- 51:12Speaker 5: So, as a result, they are 1-3.
- 51:15Speaker 7: We're waiting.
- 51:16Speaker 5: We decided to keep them there at number 12 for now.
- 51:19Speaker 5: They beat Flower Mound Marcus in the Battle of the
- 51:21Speaker 5: Axe and did so impressively.
- 51:23Speaker 7: So, on the field.
- 51:25Speaker 5: We still think they're pretty good. Now, I would say
- 51:28Speaker 5: that for them, we're going to have a pretty quick
- 51:29Speaker 5: trigger as far as them, that if they show a
- 51:32Speaker 5: sign of weakness or something, or it's become clear that
- 51:35Speaker 5: not having that quarterback is going to severely hurt them,
- 51:38Speaker 5: then if they were to drop a game, don't be
- 51:41Speaker 5: surprised if they drop farther than other teams normally would,
- 51:44Speaker 5: simply because the circumstances have certainly changed with the Farmers.
- 51:47Speaker 5: But as of right now, they are a talented bunch.
- 51:50Speaker 5: They got a lot of playmakers.
- 51:52Speaker 1: A better 5A Division II team, regardless of where you
- 51:55Speaker 1: have them in the rankings, you're feeling. South Oak Cliff, Bernie,
- 51:59Speaker 1: or Argyle?
- 52:01Speaker 5: Man, that's tough because, you know, you look at South
- 52:05Speaker 5: Oak Cliff, they've got two losses on the year. They're
- 52:08Speaker 5: to North Shore and Richmond Randall, both by a score.
- 52:12Speaker 5: And then the challenging thing, I know we've talked about
- 52:16Speaker 5: this for years and years. The challenging thing about South
- 52:18Speaker 5: Oak Cliff is that we won't learn another thing about them.
- 52:23Speaker 5: until November or December because they are going to mow
- 52:28Speaker 5: through their district. And I like what I see. I
- 52:31Speaker 5: think there are some holes to fill, especially on the
- 52:34Speaker 5: offensive side in the running game. But I think so far,
- 52:37Speaker 5: so good for them. I saw Argyle in person. I'm
- 52:41Speaker 5: wildly impressed with Hayes Hackney, Julian Caldwell. I think they
- 52:44Speaker 5: have three legit number one receivers out there in Julian Caldwell,
- 52:48Speaker 5: Ake O'Neal, and Micah DeLeon. They're really, really strong. Their
- 52:51Speaker 5: defense gives me a little bit of the heebie-jeebies. I
- 52:54Speaker 5: will tell you this, though.
- 52:55Speaker 4: I am....
- 52:57Speaker 5: I am almost all in on Bernie. I think they
- 53:01Speaker 5: went and they continued their mastery of Alamo Heights last week.
- 53:03Speaker 5: They are going to be favored in the rest of
- 53:05Speaker 5: their games the rest of the way. Quarterback Grant Sweeney
- 53:08Speaker 5: has been great. They've got a new running back that
- 53:10Speaker 5: they've discovered that has really stepped up. I think I'm
- 53:13Speaker 5: in on the Greyhounds. The other thing about them is
- 53:15Speaker 5: that I think from a path perspective... They have the
- 53:21Speaker 5: cleanest path. I think they are, they beat Alamo Heights.
- 53:25Speaker 5: There's a good chance they see Alamo Heights again in
- 53:28Speaker 5: a playoff game. And at that point, that is, I think,
- 53:30Speaker 5: their chief challenger in Region 4, which is why I
- 53:32Speaker 5: really like what Bernie's doing.
- 53:36Speaker 1: We've talked about Smithson Valley looking every bit the part
- 53:39Speaker 1: of a two-time defending state champ.
- 53:41Speaker 2: I want to say this.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Last year, uh, when it was doing the game of
- 53:46Speaker 1: the week and ultimately the state championship games on victory plus, uh,
- 53:50Speaker 1: they did a big documentary series throughout the course of
- 53:53Speaker 1: the season on Frisco Lone Star. Now, uh, I think, uh,
- 53:58Speaker 1: Jeff Rayburn's been a fine coach. Uh, I would also
- 54:02Speaker 1: submit that a lot of Lone Star fans have PTSD
- 54:06Speaker 1: about them just consistently coming up short in the playoffs
- 54:09Speaker 1: year after year after year when it looks like they're
- 54:12Speaker 1: going to be pretty good. What's your take on them?
- 54:14Speaker 1: They're number two in your rankings. They're behind Smithson Valley,
- 54:17Speaker 1: just ahead of Richmond Randall. What's your take on Lone Star?
- 54:21Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a little bit. This is going to sound mean,
- 54:26Speaker 5: but if there are Frisco Lone Star fans who feel
- 54:29Speaker 5: like they're the Buffalo Bills of Texas high school football,
- 54:32Speaker 5: I can understand it. They've been really good. They are
- 54:35Speaker 5: the team in Frisco ISD, absolutely hard stop. They're an
- 54:39Speaker 5: elite Texas high school football program. The only thing missing
- 54:43Speaker 5: is getting over the hump. The only thing missing is
- 54:46Speaker 5: the big one. They've been there twice, come up short twice.
- 54:51Speaker 5: But Jeff Rayburn, of course, a heck of a coach.
- 54:55Speaker 5: This could be the year simply because I think you
- 54:59Speaker 5: take a look at what they've got the quarterback spot
- 55:00Speaker 5: in Trey Wright, the USC commit, and how special he is.
- 55:04Speaker 5: They've got that dude there. And he played for them
- 55:07Speaker 5: last year, took them to the state championship game as
- 55:08Speaker 5: a sophomore. And the issue is that then he ran
- 55:12Speaker 5: into a Smithson Valley defense that was spectacular and made
- 55:17Speaker 5: him look pretty ordinary, right? Part of that is that
- 55:20Speaker 5: Smithson Valley did that to a lot of teams. And
- 55:22Speaker 5: part of that is that he's a sophomore, right? I
- 55:25Speaker 5: know they'd love to get another shot at him, right?
- 55:28Speaker 5: When I take a look, though, at the way that
- 55:30Speaker 5: it breaks out, they would at some point have to
- 55:33Speaker 5: go through DeSoto. Don't know how that's going to play out.
- 55:36Speaker 5: Perhaps Highland Park gets their wheels back on. Highland Park's
- 55:39Speaker 5: got a huge game this week with Richland, undefeated Richland,
- 55:42Speaker 5: who's also state-ranked. But they are, in my estimation, for
- 55:45Speaker 5: Lone Star, they're on the clean side of the bracket.
- 55:48Speaker 5: You want to be on that left side, the top
- 55:50Speaker 5: side of the bracket, the Region 1, Region 2 side.
- 55:51Speaker 5: As the other side, Smithson Valley, Richmond, Randall Porter, Memorial, Angleton,
- 55:55Speaker 5: Bernie Champion, Pflugerville, Weiss, College Station. It is a who's
- 56:00Speaker 5: who of contenders there on that side. You're only going
- 56:03Speaker 5: to have to play one of them if you get
- 56:04Speaker 5: that far, which is, I think, an advantage for them.
- 56:07Speaker 5: This could be the year that they get over the hump.
- 56:09Speaker 5: I understand you're right. There's PTSD for Lone Star fans,
- 56:12Speaker 5: but they've got a heck of a squad, and that
- 56:14Speaker 5: win over Melissa last week was a pretty gutty win.
- 56:17Speaker 1: You mentioned the Highland Park-Richland game this week, which, by
- 56:20Speaker 1: the way, if Victory Plus hadn't gone belly up, that
- 56:23Speaker 1: would have been our game this week. But do we
- 56:27Speaker 1: learn more about Richland, or do we learn more.
- 56:29Speaker 2: About Highland Park after the outcome of this game?
- 56:33Speaker 5: I think this is the moment for Richland. Like this
- 56:37Speaker 5: is the opportunity because, you know, look, Highland park is as, as,
- 56:44Speaker 5: as vulnerable as they are. And I think their defense
- 56:46Speaker 5: is pretty vulnerable, right? They are still Highland park and
- 56:50Speaker 5: they're still Highland park. And they're still in district play
- 56:53Speaker 5: where they are really, really, really good in district play
- 56:58Speaker 5: for Richland and, with Fat Gibson, their running back, the
- 57:02Speaker 5: playmakers they've got. This is their moment. This is their
- 57:05Speaker 5: opportunity to show the world that they're ready for that
- 57:09Speaker 5: next step. I feel like we have a good feeling.
- 57:12Speaker 5: I feel like I have a decent read on Highland Park. Now,
- 57:15Speaker 5: they can certainly improve, especially on the defensive side, but
- 57:18Speaker 5: I feel like I know what Highland Park more or
- 57:20Speaker 5: less looks like. For Richland, this is the level up.
- 57:23Speaker 5: This is the opportunity to make that statewide statement.
- 57:26Speaker 1: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Check
- 57:30Speaker 1: him out online at texasfootball.com. Appreciate the time, Tepper. Look
- 57:34Speaker 1: forward to next week.
- 57:35Speaker 4: All righty.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Talk to you then.
- 57:36Speaker 4: All right.
- 57:37Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up our number two on
- 57:40Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone. Continuing here on a.
- 57:46Speaker 1: Texan Tuesday here on 13 Under the Zone. Hey, we
- 57:48Speaker 1: want to mention something. I'm going to be out tomorrow,
- 57:51Speaker 1: this being the open date week on the schedule. I
- 57:53Speaker 1: usually take one or two days during the week. to
- 57:58Speaker 1: take care of some personal things, personal business and stuff.
- 58:01Speaker 1: I also have a speaking engagement tomorrow. So some things
- 58:04Speaker 1: of that nature. So Jake will be here tomorrow with
- 58:09Speaker 1: the program. I'll be back on Thursday. What do you
- 58:11Speaker 1: have cooking tomorrow?
- 58:13Speaker 3: We will take a deeper dive into the Major League
- 58:16Speaker 3: Baseball playoffs after seeing each game one of this wildcard series.
- 58:20Speaker 3: Hunter Baumgartner hosts the free and post for the Milwaukee
- 58:24Speaker 3: Brewers on the iHeartRadio app. He joins us to catch
- 58:28Speaker 3: us up on everything there, get some of his National
- 58:30Speaker 3: League predictions. We'll also talk to EJ Sanchez about kind
- 58:34Speaker 3: of an Austin area high school football check-in during that
- 58:37Speaker 3: midway point, district play starting to kind of turn around
- 58:40Speaker 3: and come around. We'll also talk some SEC football, both
- 58:43Speaker 3: from the Longhorn perspective and around the rest of the conference.
- 58:46Speaker 3: Maybe Which 0-2 teams need to feel the most panicked
- 58:50Speaker 3: about their start? Chris Hummer from CBS Sports will join
- 58:53Speaker 3: us for that segment.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 58:56Speaker 1: The other thing that I was going to mention with
- 58:58Speaker 1: the high school football scene, obviously, we take a more
- 59:02Speaker 1: broad brush approach when we visit with Greg Tepper, as
- 59:05Speaker 1: we just did. They're talking about from the state, as
- 59:08Speaker 1: well as the college football scene.
- 59:10Speaker 2: As well.
- 59:12Speaker 1: When it comes to the high school football scene, these
- 59:16Speaker 1: are the two thoughts that are going into my mind
- 59:18Speaker 1: going into this week, week number six. First of all,
- 59:21Speaker 1: there are some teams on bye weeks. And so like
- 59:24Speaker 1: Tepp was saying, he said, what, 39%, almost 40%. of
- 59:30Speaker 1: the high school football programs in the state of Texas
- 59:33Speaker 1: are taking this week off. And I thought about that,
- 59:37Speaker 1: and I think I know why, or at least part
- 59:39Speaker 1: of it. I mean, all the schools, if you're starting
- 59:41Speaker 1: on what used to be known as zero week, giving
- 59:44Speaker 1: you 11 weeks to play 10, same thing with the
- 59:46Speaker 1: college football thing now starting next year, zero week is gone,
- 59:51Speaker 1: and you'll have 14 weeks to play 12 games.
- 59:54Speaker 2: Now, what this means in.
- 59:57Speaker 1: The larger picture, about the college football playoff and whether
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: it gets expanded, although I think it probably will, to
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: 24 teams, how that's affected by that. We'll know more
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and we'll find out more down the road. But with
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: regard to the high school football programs and why this
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: week is such a heavy week of buys and open
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: dates on the schedules, think about it. They've just passed
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: the midway mark of the season. the numerical midway mark,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: five games in the book. Some have only played four,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: you know, that.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Had a bye week already early.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Some have, especially the districts that have like eight schools
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: in it. But even the districts that have seven, they
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: have to have a rotating bye or non-district game for teams.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: For example, 26-5A, I believe, or 25-6A, excuse me, 25-6A.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Every team in the district played a district game last
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: week except Westlake because there's seven. So there's going to
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: be an odd man out every week. So they play Midland-Lee.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: And so they're back in the district play this week.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: And it is, I think, the game of the week
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: in the area. Round Rock at Westlake. It's weird that
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: they are now in the same district again, but that
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: happened as a result of the realignment and the shuffling,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: which gets back to my point about the five games.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: In the books thing.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: There are more of the six school districts in the
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: state of Texas than ever before. So it's pretty easy,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: or at least at the very least manageable for school
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: districts to to get together UIL districts and say, you
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: know what? We're going to throw a blanket over district, whatever, 14,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: 3A or whatever, and say, this week, October 1st, October 2nd,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: October 3rd, if you play Saturday, whatever, that first weekend
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: in October is going to be an open date week
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: for the entire district. Then you come back and play
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: your district games after that. So, There's a lot of
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: school districts are doing it, and I think that's a
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: reason why on that.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: It was just something on my mind about that. Okay.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Now, yesterday, we told you about the updated college football
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: power rankings in addition to the updated rankings in the polls.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: And in addition to the updated rankings in the polls,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: the updated power rankings and the updated college football playoff projections.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: So we told you about that yesterday. Today, ESPN has
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: put out its updated NFL power rankings. So we start
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: from the bottom like we always do, Jake. Number 32,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: any guesses?
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: Oh, the team that plays down in Miami with a
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: safety you and I both love.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: Yep, the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:03:05Speaker 8: Safety being Michael Taft.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: So they're 0-3. Titans are 0-3. They were competitive in
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: a loss to the Giants, but they're 0-3. The Bucs
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: are 0-3 and in a bad way right now.
- 1:03:17Speaker 8: They're a mess, Craig.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: And now with Baker Mayfield out, it's going to be
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: a problem. Falcons are up to number 29 with that
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: win over the Packers. They went from 31 to 29.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Probably still too low. We'll see how it is going forward.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: The Cardinals, 28. They were very competitive and lost to
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: the 49ers. These are one and two teams.
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: Well, no.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: You got the Chargers, who I think are the highest
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: ranked 0-3 team. They're at number 27. Commanders, you're Washington Commanders.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: With that win, moved up two spots to number 26
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: with that win over the Seahawks. in week number three
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: more impressive than the bears beating the eagles was the
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: commanders beating the seahawks.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: Well look it was it was important to see the
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: defense force takeaways to see the offensive product look better
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: under marcus mariota than it did last year because i
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: don't care how bad you can feel for a guy
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: like dan quinn with the amount of injuries washington's had
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: If the product looked like it did last year when
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: they limped to the finish line without Daniels, there were
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: going to be people calling for his job.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about it. All right, number 25, the Jets.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Number 24, the lowest ranked two-in-one team would be the
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns. They jumped five spots after beating the Panthers
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: last week. Number 23, the Colts. And 1-2, Panthers also
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: 1-2 at number 22.
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: Tough, tough couple weeks for the Panthers.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: You're still a believer.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: I still believe in them. I still think they're the
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: best team in that division.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: So do I. I picked them to win it as well.
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Number 21.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: Number 21 is the highest ranked 0-3 team. That's the
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Texans at 0-3. Number 20, the Packers at 1-2. 19
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: is the Giants at 2-1.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: 18, the 1-2 Saints.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: 17, the 2-1 Steelers. 16, the 1-2 Patriots.
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: Yeah, what a fall for them here from the start
- 1:05:18Speaker 8: of the year.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it really did not look good. Largest loss ever
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: for the Patriots.
- 1:05:28Speaker 8: They can't run the ball all of a sudden. I
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: don't understand what happened.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Yeah, their largest loss ever to the Jaguars on that.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Number 15, the Cowboys.
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: Wow, they moved up.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: They did with that loss to the Ravens. Vegas at
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: number 14 at 3-0. Lions at 2-1, number 13. Bengals
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: at 2-1, number 12. Bears at 2-1, number 11.
- 1:05:51Speaker 8: Wow, that's too low. I'm all the way in on
- 1:05:54Speaker 8: the Bears.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Let's see how their offense continues going forward. Their defense
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: helped key that win last night.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: That's why.
- 1:06:03Speaker 8: I saw what I wanted to from that defense.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Number 10, the Jaguars at 2-1. Vikings at 3-0, number 9.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: Eagles at 2-1, number 8. How about the Rams at 1-2,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: still number 7.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: They dropped two spots.
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: Yeah, throw the Australia game away, though. And they got
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: the game taken away from them in Denver.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Yeah, they think they'll have Puka Nakua back this week
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: against Philadelphia. Broncos at 2-1, number 6. Ravens at 2-1,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: number 5. Seahawks at 2-1, or number 4. They fell
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: two spots. Chiefs at 3-0, number 3. 49ers at 3-0,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: number two, and the number one team, still the Buffalo Bills,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: at 3-0. So there's your NFL power rankings updated for you.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: That and 650 will get you the matcha I tried yesterday.
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: He told me that he tried it, and I said, okay,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: I'm going to try it.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: I got the orange cream one. It's pretty good. Kind
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: of tastes a little like a creamsicle. Wasn't bad.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: I didn't taste much green in it. You know, I
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: know there's green color. I didn't taste much green. I
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: tasted the orange grape. You know, when we were kids
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: and you'd come out to church afterwards and they would
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: have coffee for the adults and they would have a
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Kool-Aid for the kids. They would have like red, like
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: a strawberry, and then they would have that green Kool-Aid.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: We'd say, hey, what kind of Kool-Aid do they have there?
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: They have grape or they have orange and they have green.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Green. We'd say, what does it taste like? It tastes
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: like green. It doesn't taste like lemon limes. It tastes
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: like green.
- 1:07:37Speaker 8: You know, there's yellow.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Final hour of the program coming up on 13 Under
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the Zone. With The Zone, glad to have you with
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: us on this Texan Tuesday. Craig Wade joined by the producer,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Jake Herman.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: We're going to do.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: A lot more recap on day number one of the
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Major League Baseball playoffs tomorrow. Obviously, they're underway going on
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: right now.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: And we'll do more of a recap.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: But I did want to get caught up on a
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: lot of the football things. College football, we've done some
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: things on. And I want to get back to the NFL.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: We heard earlier from D'Amico Ryans. We're going to hear
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: some more from him here momentarily. And then we're going
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: to hear from Jerry Jones. Because remember, Tuesday is also
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: Jerry Day. Jerry does his radio show in Dallas on 105.3
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: The Fan, and it always makes for appointment listening, and
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: today is no exception to that.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: So we've got that coming up.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: And given the fact that the Cowboys play the Texans,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: this Sunday in Houston just kind of adds to the pathos,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: if you will.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: So we'll talk.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: About the Cowboys a little more coming up in a
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: few minutes, but I want to go to D'Amico Ryans,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: and we heard from D'Amico earlier and trying to get
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: his team off the mat at 0-3.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: So There are questions that come in.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: His news conference came after the game, that deal where
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: the hindsight is 20-20 thing. When they went for it
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: on fourth and one there, and he was asked about
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: after reviewing all that, does he still like the call
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: having done that?
- 1:09:30Speaker 12: Yeah, I'll make the call to go for it. Look,
- 1:09:32Speaker 12: you're aggressive. You go for it. You have to live
- 1:09:35Speaker 12: with it, right? Just standing here last week, I don't
- 1:09:38Speaker 12: go for it. You know, shame on me.
- 1:09:40Speaker 8: Go for it.
- 1:09:41Speaker 12: You don't get it. Shame on me. That's the position of.
- 1:09:44Speaker 7: A head coach.
- 1:09:45Speaker 12: It happens, right?
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: And I'm man enough to own those decisions and live
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: with the decisions that I made. But I came out
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: in this game saying we're going to be aggressive. We
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: took the ball to start the game, wanted to come
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: out with an aggressive mindset, offensively come.
- 1:09:58Speaker 12: Out, try to drive, get a good drive, go, right.
- 1:10:01Speaker 6: Fourth down, being a little bit aggressive there to, hey,
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: let's punch it.
- 1:10:05Speaker 12: Let's move these guys off the ball. Let's try to
- 1:10:07Speaker 12: get a yard. which I've seen our guys do. I've
- 1:10:10Speaker 12: seen the guys get it done, and it didn't happen.
- 1:10:12Speaker 12: We got stopped, right?
- 1:10:14Speaker 7: And that happens.
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: When you're the head coach, you make decisions. Sometimes they
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: go great. You're the best coach ever.
- 1:10:20Speaker 12: Sometimes decisions don't go great. You're the worst coach ever.
- 1:10:23Speaker 12: You should get fired. So I understand that. I'm a
- 1:10:26Speaker 12: big boy. I can handle all of that.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: Next, D'Amico was asked about tempo. Tempo is a big
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: part of football, as always. And especially with regard, obviously,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: to your offense, being able to execute it defensively, trying.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: to be able to change the tempo, make the opposing
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: offense uncomfortable with their tempo, maybe having changed it. But
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: based on some of the issues, and this was a
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: question that D'Amico really liked, does it go into the
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: thought process and game planning about possibly changing tempo based
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: on the strengths that C.J.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Stroud brings to the game?
- 1:11:09Speaker 7: For sure. It's a great question, Kim.
- 1:11:12Speaker 6: The thing for me about offensive football is you have
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: to make sure you move the ball and try to
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: score as many points as possible. How that look to me,
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: it really doesn't matter. You can think or want to
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: be a certain thing, right? But if you're shown that
- 1:11:27Speaker 6: that's not the case and it's not getting done, then
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: you have to adjust, right? And that's where we are.
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: We have to adjust some things, right? As a team,
- 1:11:34Speaker 6: we got to adjust some things. Of course, it's not
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: going right. We're 0-3, not where we want to be.
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: So we got to adjust and rethink all the things
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: that we're doing to put us in a better position
- 1:11:45Speaker 6: to win and finish football game.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: At 0-3, and understanding that, you know, you start getting
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: into those must-win conversations, He was asked if there is
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: a sense of urgency that has permeated the program after
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: three ballgames.
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: A sense of urgency has never left. It's always been
- 1:12:04Speaker 6: a sense of urgency. We've had a couple games here.
- 1:12:08Speaker 6: First two games, I mean, it comes down to a
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: two-minute drive there in the first game versus Buffalo.
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: Same thing here versus Indy, two-minute. We can go one
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: way or the other, right?
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: We can be sitting here looking at ourselves two at one,
- 1:12:23Speaker 6: but we're not. We didn't finish the games. We got
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: to do a better job of finishing collectively, starting with myself, coaches,
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: and the players collectively.
- 1:12:33Speaker 7: We finish better, we'll be in a better position.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: So expectations are always a dangerous thing, right? Fans have them,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: media have them. But I've said this before, and I'll
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: continue to say it. with regard to the Longhorn football team,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: and I'm sure it applies in the NFL, whether it's
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: the Cowboys or the Texans or the Eagles or the
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: surprising 3-0 Raiders or the surprising 3-0 Vikings, whoever, the
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: Bears' surprise last night over the Eagles, that kind of thing.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: The word expectations carries more gravitas within a team's locker
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: room and in their building than it does anywhere else.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: They're the ones who have to live and breathe and
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: eat it every day.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Matt Brown used to say that.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: To the players, and I heard Rod Baber say this,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: that the coaches used to tell him, we don't want
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: you guys to feel the weight of the world on
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: your shoulders, even though our paychecks are in your mouths.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: It was a joke about that, but the players always
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: remembered it. So expectations can be a pretty... heavy weighty
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: thing and ryan's was asked does that mean that there
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: is some real disappointment about the 0-3 start given the
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: expectations that were for this team you.
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: Know everybody talks about the expectations right and it's uh
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: for me i mean i always say this what type
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: of expectations do we all have like everybody should have
- 1:14:10Speaker 6: high expectations for themselves We don't go into a season
- 1:14:13Speaker 6: and say, yeah, let's go 0-3 to start the season. Like,
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: to have low expectations, I think that's a slap in
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: the face to everyone here.
- 1:14:21Speaker 7: We are where we are right now.
- 1:14:23Speaker 6: Only people that can do something about it is us,
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: the men in the locker room.
- 1:14:27Speaker 7: Like, we stick together and we keep.
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: We keep punching at that door until it breaks down,
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: and we're going to keep battling. We're going to keep working.
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: Our process is right. The guys are working hard. The
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: play style was really good on yesterday. We just got
- 1:14:41Speaker 6: to finish games better.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: And then a little more with regard to the Texans.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: D'Amico Ryan's asked about C.J. Stroud and the progression that
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: he has tried to improve upon and the The, you know,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: just trying to improve on the whole level of things,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: given the disappointments. And even with all of that, and
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: all of the question marks, and the contract, and everything
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: that surrounded C.J.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Stroud going into the season.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: What did D'Amico Ryans think about the progress he's trying
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: to make through all of this?
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: Maturity is the word that just jumps up, right? It
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: sticks out to me. He is maturing as a quarterback,
- 1:15:25Speaker 6: as a leader. he's doing a good job of making
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: plays for us. Despite whoever is around him, he finds
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: a way to make plays and he's growing. He's showing
- 1:15:34Speaker 6: some toughness, right? To tuck the ball and go get
- 1:15:38Speaker 6: us a tough third down there on third and eight.
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: So I'm seeing the toughness. I'm seeing the grid, seeing
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: the maturity, seeing the leadership from CJ. He just has
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: to continue to keep growing. And all of us as
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: a team, like each year, you find out who you
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: are as a team. And it's never the same as
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: much as you may want it to be. Each year
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: is never the same. So we're still building, like, who
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: will the 2026 Texans.
- 1:16:04Speaker 7: Become, right?
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: And it's a little adversity that we're going through, but
- 1:16:09Speaker 6: adversity is going to build that character. It builds that
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: strength that you need, the resolve that you need to
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: continue to push through the season. This is where we
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: are right now, but that's not who we're becoming. Like,
- 1:16:20Speaker 6: we are becoming a good team. We just got to
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: go out and show it. We got to go out
- 1:16:24Speaker 6: and finish, and we have the right guys.
- 1:16:25Speaker 7: To do it.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Of course, the Cowboys and Texans will meet on Sunday
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: at noon at what they've gone back to calling it
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: Reliant Stadium, haven't they? It was NRG for a while
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: after it was originally Reliant, and I heard somebody on
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: a network program talk about them going back to Reliant Stadium.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: And I know it's part of Reliant Park, the.
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: Whole bit with– with the other facilities and venues they
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: have on that. But for a time, I think they
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: pivoted away from calling it NRG Stadium, and they've gone
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: back to Reliant, haven't they?
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: Yeah, in August they did.
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: They kind of took the convenient opportunity with the covering
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: of the awning during the World Cup. And once they
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: raised the curtain on it, there was a new name. Meanwhile,
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: in Dallas, once they put the curtains in for the
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: world cup to block the sunshine, Jerry Jones said, no,
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: to heck with those.
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:17:21Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: Jerry's going to make the ultimate call on that, but
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: they've gone back to calling it reliant stadium, reliant stadium.
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: That's, that's what they originally called it.
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: And then, and then went to NRG as part of
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: reliant park and then back to, uh, reliant stadium.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: So that happened in August coming off the world cup.
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: Okay. All right.
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: Uh, So there are a couple other NFL notes. You know,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: the Giants have been active. They made that deal to
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: get J.J. McCarthy for that fifth round pick to the Vikings. Now,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: sources indicate they're going to release Odell Beckham Jr. They
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: feel he has not made a significant impact the first
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: three games with the team. He was one of the
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: last players to make the 53-man roster earlier this month
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: and just really has struggled to earn consistent playing time
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: played just six offensive snaps in their win over the
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Titans on Sunday. He is second in Giants franchise history
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: in receiving yards, but it hasn't gone well for him.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: So as a result, he's out or reportedly is going
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: to be out.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: And so that's where that is.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: A couple other things in talking about the– business of
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: last night's monday night game we talked about case keenum
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: uh what a job he did and he said that's
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: one of those things that he will remember for the
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: rest of his life And Ben Johnson, head coach, said
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: it's all about Case Keenum and what he was able
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: to do tonight.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: I thought he did an extraordinary job.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Here's a guy who's 38 years old, 38 years and
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: 223 days old. He became the second oldest quarterback in
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: franchise history to win a start Todd Collins had him
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: beat by 116 days. But Todd Collins, I saw this
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: number come up last night. I think it was Scott
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Van Peltz talking about it. He had like 33 passing
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: yards and a Bears win off of that. So anyway,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: what he did, Keenum, was apparently quite a bit more impressive.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: That was Chicago won by 20 points over the Vikings
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: back in 2010. Well, the Chicago 20-point win was their
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: largest on Monday Night Football since 2010 when they won
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: at the Vikings.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: So, anyway, it's good stuff for him as well.
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: We've got some sound, if you'd like, from Case Keenum
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: in the locker room.
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: This was going a little viral earlier today.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: Okay, let's hear it.
- 1:19:58Speaker 12: Man, I love you guys, man.
- 1:20:03Speaker 14: This is a special night. This means a bunch to me, man.
- 1:20:08Speaker 14: This was taken from me a lot of times. And
- 1:20:11Speaker 14: to have him call me and bring me back, the
- 1:20:14Speaker 14: love of the game again, man.
- 1:20:16Speaker 12: To have my family, my kids get to watch.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: Me.
- 1:20:27Speaker 12: And get to do it with this family right here.
- 1:20:28Speaker 14: I'm telling you, we got something special here, man.
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: Hey, next man up mentality.
- 1:20:34Speaker 12: I'm telling you guys, this is a special group. Led
- 1:20:37Speaker 12: by a special man. With a special group.
- 1:20:39Speaker 7: Of men over there.
- 1:20:40Speaker 5: And I told this to the guys beforehand, man.
- 1:20:42Speaker 12: I may not be a cowboy. But this ain't my life.
- 1:20:44Speaker 10: This ain't my life.
- 1:20:45Speaker 11: This ain't my life.
- 1:20:50Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: All right. Good stuff for Case Keenum there. And good
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: for him last night.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: And the Cowboys would tell you good for them, too,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: since it was the Eagles they beat. But the Cowboys
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: have their own issues to deal with. And coming up,
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: we're going to hear from Jerry Jones from his weekly
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: radio show up in Dallas, what he thinks about the
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: Cowboys' decisions on that final scoring drive for them, where
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: there were some opportunities wasted. We'll let you hear all
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: that and more coming up here on A-Texan Tuesday on
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and where you
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: can always listen to us absolutely free of charge right
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: here on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Well, we've just started the autumn here.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: The week so uh i don't know if i'll be
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: drinking again but we hear that from the king george straight.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: One of the 50 number ones and felt like a
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: pretty appropriate time to mix it in here on a
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: texan tuesday.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Well especially given what the cowboys are going through right
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: and the texans the texans are all in three the
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: cowboys are one and two and they meet coming up
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: uh this sunday at noon and uh cowboys owner president chief.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Bottle washer, cook and bottle washer, as they like to say.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: Jerry Jones, does a weekly Tuesday morning radio show in Dallas.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: Sometimes there's not that much.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: Sometimes it's radio gold, like last year when he was
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: threatening to replace the two radio hosts on the station,
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: which he had no power to do whatsoever, but he
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: was angry. And today falls somewhere in between those two.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: He's got some good stuff, and then some stuff is so-so.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: So this is from 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Jerry's
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: Tuesday morning installment with them. First of all, Jones, with
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: the takeaways he was asked for from this loss that
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: the Cowboys suffered to the Baltimore Ravens there in Rio.
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: We don't have time.
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: There's not a way in the world to discuss them,
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: but all the obvious things. We have our very best... players,
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: our very best situation that you can have on the
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: field ready to ostensibly win the game. No one would
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: have thought that they would have had enough time on
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: the clock to basically get a score that would get
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: it done because we were anticipating there early when we got,
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: I'm speaking of now, on the goal line with the
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: just a matter of seconds. We all have gone over
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: completely the use of timeouts during that time, the use
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: of timeouts before we got down there when we were
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: over on defense. So be careful going over those kinds
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: of things, where your input's coming from, where you are
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: on your headsets, how you get your information down, how
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: you evolve into making that decision. Those are the kinds
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: of things that are being gone over ad nauseum so
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: that you can look to do it better when you've
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: got a situation similar to that in the future.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: Next, you know, when you come off questioning some of
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: the things that, that happened in the game and the
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: decision-making and all that, that's going to lead to a
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: question about, you know, Brian Schottenheimer, the head coach and
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: the discussions that he has, because believe me, Jerry has
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: his conversations with the coach and Jerry has his own
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: thoughts on what should be happening.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: He is after all the owner of the team.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: So there's, nothing shocking about any of that, but sometimes
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: he makes his opinions a little more vociferous than at
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: other times. So he was asked if he thought if
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: Schottenheimer would be feeling any differently about the loss today,
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: then I wouldn't exactly say that shot. He gave a
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: sunny disposition oriented review of the thing right after the game.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: The problem with right after a game is a lot
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: of times, um, coaches, you know, the stock answer is,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: I haven't seen the film yet. I go back, I
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: look at it, the video, and we'll see this and this.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: But they are, and this is completely understandable, a little
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: more reluctant to just lay into their team unless they
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: were absolutely blown out of the water. In this case,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: it was, you know, as Babe Laufenberg described it, a
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: soul-crushing defeat with what happened. And so Schottenheimer, was a
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: little more, you know, you might say benign in terms
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: of some of the disappointment. So with that in mind,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: then the guys, the fan asked Jerry if Shottie was
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: feeling a little bit differently now having had a chance
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: to go back and review everything about the loss.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: Well, I don't know that you would inject differently in
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: the sentence, but he certainly has had hours, if you will,
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: to reflect and communicate with everybody involved in the decisions
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: that were going on at that time. And so that's
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: what you should be doing. You candidly were in such
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: a good position to win that game. You had earned
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: that position because of how well you had played on
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: the previous set of downs relative to Baltimore having the ball.
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: And so we made the stop. We had come back,
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: really were proud of the way the guys came back,
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: especially those defensive stands that we made. And then you
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: get in that situation and this is a textbook. One
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: thing about the game is that it gives you a
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: lot of confidence. issues or a lot of time because
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: then you don't have the seconds ticking away on the clock.
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: You can spend minutes or hours looking at every point.
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: Doing what most fans would think we should be doing
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: right now. analyzing every aspect of where we were with
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: those circumstances is what we're doing. And we do that
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: in light of the fact that coming up here Sunday,
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: we've got a big game down in Houston and an
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: opportunity to take the good parts of what we've been
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: about in these first games, take those good parts and
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: put them to use to beat a good Houston team.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Jerry was then asked for, and this is the part
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: that drew the national attention, because understand, just like as
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: we bring you a lot of Cowboys coverage, after all
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: the games are heard on our sister station, 98.1 FM KVAD,
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: there are two NFL teams in the state of Texas,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: and we We try to cover them pretty well and
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: hear from the coach. We just heard from D'Amico Ryan,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: head coach of the Texans. It's different with the Cowboys.
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: We know it's different with the Cowboys. Not only do
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: we hear from Ryan Schottenheimer or Dak Prescott or some
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: other players, you hear from the owner. So, you know,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: you don't hear really from ownership and rarely from front
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: office management from the Texans.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: Occasionally. Might hear from Nick Casario a little bit.
- 1:28:23Speaker 8: We get a little bit of that during your summer vacation,
- 1:28:25Speaker 8: like one press conference.
- 1:28:27Speaker 7: Right, right.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: And what was going on in terms of the contract
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: discussions with and surrounding C.J.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: Stroud, things like that.
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: But by and large, you don't hear much from the
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: Houston Texans front office. For that matter, you hear very
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: little from the front office of all the other teams
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: in the National Football League.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: Gee, I wonder why.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: The other 30 teams as well. But you always hear
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: from Jerry. We've always heard from Jerry. And that's why
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: sometimes it becomes... pretty intriguing stuff. So when Jerry makes
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: some of the comments like what you're about to hear,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: it's going to draw some national attention and national headlines.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: And so he was asked if he was satisfied with
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: the explanations, meaning whether it's from Schottenheimer or assistant coaches
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: or even players, was he satisfied with the explanations on
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: some of those late game management things, the Pass that
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: was thrown away and some miscommunication. There was a false
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: start by Schoonmaker. There was all of those things. And
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: there were some missteps down the stretch.
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: I mean, Dallas could have ensured a field goal was
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: the last play of regulation if they wanted to.
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: Yeah, could have ran it down from there.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: So Jerry was asked, was he satisfied with the explanations
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: he got on the late game management.
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: And the mistakes that were made?
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: Well, there is no explanation you're satisfied with. None. Let's
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: be sure that we all understand that. They don't have
- 1:30:02Speaker 4: one that they're satisfied with. We made mistakes during that time.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: There's no question about it. So there is no explanation.
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: There's an evaluation of how not to make the same
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: mistakes again. which is what you should be doing. You
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: can't get that back. No way to get it back.
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: What you can do is use it, and if there's
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: any aspect of it that you want to just not
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: even think happened, if there's any aspect of it, use
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: it to get better, and that's what's being done. But
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: the aspect of sitting here trying to change what happened
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: on that field in Brazil, as we all know, is impossible.
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: But it is possible to learn from it. And I
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: can assure you right now, they are analyzing it with
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: the intention of learning from it. How to do it
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: differently next time and come out there with a win.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: Next up, Jerry was asked one other thing. And I'm
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: always amused by this. Questions come up, and I completely
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: don't understand why the questions are asked. If you are
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: in a press conference or in an interview situation, and
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: I'm talking about pro teams here, NFL, or you could
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: apply to Major League Baseball, could apply to the NBA,
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: could apply to the NFL. I mean, NHL, as well
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: as the NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball. And that
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: is this. When you have an owner or president or
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: general manager, not to mention the coach, but the coach
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: is really almost always going to be very tight-lipped about this.
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: So when you.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: Have an owner or a president or a GM of
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: a team doing some sort of media availability or interview,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: there are always, always, always going to be questions asked
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: about players that might be available on the trade market
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: or the open market. Now, I don't believe that the
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: vast majority, let me just put it that way, the
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: vast majority of the people asking the questions or doing
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: the interviews are unintelligent to the point of not remembering
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: and understanding that an owner or president or general manager
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: can't get into the specifics about a potentially available player
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: because it's tampering. And there's hundreds of thousands of dollars
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: in fines, if not even more, if you say the
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: wrong thing or identify somebody that you are targeting. Teams
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: have been fine for that. You have to be careful
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: with what you're saying. But then again, I understand the
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: reporter or the interviewer feeling the need to ask the question.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: What I don't get is the need to ask a
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: specific question about a specific player.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: That's where it crosses the line. into tampering.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: You can certainly ask generalized questions about, hey, do you
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: think you need to upgrade at the linebacker spot? Or
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: with the injuries you've had at wide receiver, do you
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: think that maybe you need to explore the trade market?
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: Things like that.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: But even that, front office people are reluctant to to
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: get into too specific because you kind of tip your
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: hand to any interested trade partners about what you really
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: need to the point where they can increase their demand
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: for what they want in return.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: Does that make sense?
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: So with that in mind, Jerry was asked about where
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: does he stand on the trade market and evaluating his defense.
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: And this question, Jake, involved also Joey Porter, didn't it?
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: It was a report from ESPN linking the Cowboys to
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: Joey Porter with all of the injuries that they've had
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: in the secondary. He's over in Pittsburgh. That was the,
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: that was the report that kind of sparked this.
- 1:34:14Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: So, so let me say this.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: Outlets, agencies like ESPN or NFL.com or, um, uh, other outlets,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: they're going to, uh, report the news as they find
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: out from their sources. And there was that report, sources
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: indicating that the Cowboys are exploring that type of thing.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: And Porter's name was invoked in that. So they're going
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: to do that. And probably the person doing the interview
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: with a front office guy is probably going to mention
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: that name. But it does put a front office guy, owner, president,
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: general manager, whatever, It kind of paints them into a
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: corner because if they answer in the affirmative, then they
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: run the risk of being targeted for tampering. It's almost
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: a kind of when did you stop beating your wife question.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: It's difficult to have a no-win situation. About the only
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: thing you can say and keep it generic enough that
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: you don't tip your hand is, yes, we need help
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: in a variety of areas. because of injuries or inadequacies
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: where some guys just haven't stepped up enough and played
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: well enough. So we do need to explore possibilities. That
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: would be a relatively generic response to this. When you
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: are asked a specific question, it becomes a little more difficult.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: So Jerry was asked, where does he stand on the
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: trade market right now and evaluating his defense? Now it's
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: getting a little more specific, you know, with regard to specifics.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: Positions and the possibility of players being mentioned.
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: I'd just say we're right on top of it. We're
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: very aware of the moving parts out here we should be.
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: And communication is a big part of that. It's a
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: big part of it. And communication at all levels. At
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: my level, at Stephen's level, at the scouts' level, we
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: all have contacts. And this is a time when you
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: really can have discussions and they can be productive. The
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: answer to your question is, yes, there's conversations going on.
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: Jerry Jones with us here.
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: Not specifically to the player you just mentioned or referring
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: to situation. Trying to avoid tampering.
- 1:36:48Speaker 12: Here, folks.
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: So there's some Jerry for you.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: And, you know, every Tuesday, Jerry is not without some intrigue,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: some interest, sometimes even more so than usual. There was
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: a bit of it this week in terms of him
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: saying no explanation. would be satisfying him about some of
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: those late game decisions made in the Cowboys' loss to
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: the Ravens.
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: Again, should be a lot of fun this Sunday.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: Cowboys and Texans both really in need of wins, especially
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: Texans who have yet to win a game. All right,
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: more coming up here on this Texan Tuesday on Sports
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:37:28Speaker 13: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the voice
- 1:37:30Speaker 13: of the Longhorns, Craig Way. Follow Craig on social media
- 1:37:34Speaker 13: at Hornvoiced.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: Show of hands out there if.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: You thought that the start to this Raiders season after
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: three weeks would resemble like that classic John Facinda characterized Raider.
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: Thing with that song of the Raiders.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: And, you know, when they were terrorizing the AFC, the
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: winningest team in the NFL overall by winning percentage in
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: the 70s. Only won one Super Bowl during that time,
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: but they were the winningest team. team by percent probably
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: would have doubted.
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: That yeah my hands are down they're you know in
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: my pockets under the microphone whatever you want to call
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: it i had no inkling this was coming i.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: Don't think anybody did really i i you know uh
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: the fact and and we'll certainly find out more just
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: about the rate the other i think big prediction that
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: was coming down was that even though the Raiders were
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: going to start Kirk Cousins in the season opener against Miami,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: that it probably wouldn't be long before they then switch
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: to Fernando Mendoza, maybe even in the first game. Well,
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: that hadn't happened because Kirk Cousins has played pretty well
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: in the first three weeks. Now, We'll find out more, again,
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: going forward on this. But, you know, they come off
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: the win in New Orleans. Now they go home, and
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: we get to find out quite a bit more about
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: them this Sunday afternoon because they're playing the Chiefs.
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: Now, I would say to you this.
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: Cowboy fans and Texans fans, you'll get your full, you know,
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: immersion reaction of the game Sunday because they're in the
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: early window.
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: It's, it's right. That's a noon game. I'm almost certain
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: of the Cowboys.
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: So as Brian Schottenheimer reminded us after their flight home
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: from Rio.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:39:31Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: Well, you knew the schedule when it came out, you know,
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: so interesting schedule. He called it.
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: Yeah. Right.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: And it's 240 miles. It's a 40 minute plane flight
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: on a charter.
- 1:39:45Speaker 7: Come on.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: It's not that big a deal.
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: I think it was more just being in the early
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: window after getting.
- 1:39:52Speaker 7: Back in the morning.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's a 40-minute plane ride. It's not like
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: they're going to Seattle, you know, or Miami or New England.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: It's a 40-minute plane flight. They could bus over if
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: they wanted to. They could pull in Alabama, drive to Starkville.
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not happening in the NFL. Check the NFL
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: Players Association about travel considerations.
- 1:40:08Speaker 7: That's not happening.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: But it's a 40-minute charter flight down there. So it's
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: no big deal. uh, to them about that. So it's
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: the noon game. The point that I was going to
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: make about this is the Raiders and chiefs might be,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: let me look at this might be the prime game
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: of the late window. Uh, I mean, Broncos 49ers, pretty good.
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: The rest of them, eh, Miami and Minnesota. Oh, and
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: three chargers at Seattle. Um, Lions and Carolina's the night game.
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: I think Kansas City and Vegas is the headline game
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: for the late window anyway. So we'd find out a
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: bit more about the Raiders, how for real they truly
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: are after this game at home on Sunday against Kansas City.
- 1:41:06Speaker 8: I'll tell you who's for real is Brock Bowers, Craig.
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:10Speaker 3: I mean, when he is in there, That offense all
- 1:41:13Speaker 3: of a sudden looks very different. He's essentially a wide
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: receiver dressed in a tight ends uniform. And it's pretty
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: fun to watch the way they can move him around
- 1:41:23Speaker 3: and use him. The question obviously is about their defense.
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: And they had the big takeaways in the fourth quarter.
- 1:41:28Speaker 3: A game that the New Orleans Saints are probably kicking
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: themselves over. They get the Falcons in prime time this
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: week in that Hurricane Katrina game. 20 year anniversary game.
- 1:41:36Speaker 3: So that'll be a pretty charged up atmosphere at the
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: super dome for sure. But it'll be, I mean, if
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: the Raiders win this week, it's time to have a
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: whole lot of conversations that are going to make you
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: want to rub the sleep sand out of your eyes.
- 1:41:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: Better take them seriously on that.
- 1:41:50Speaker 7: Uh, one more update.
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: We mentioned earlier, we were talking about the giants and
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: the Vikings and the, the, the trade that sent JJ
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: McCarthy to Minnesota yesterday for a fifth round draft pick.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: So here's McCarthy who of course had been, you know,
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: number one pick, and yet he was the number 10
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: pick overall. He was the Vikings' number one pick, but
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: the 10th pick overall in the draft, and just could
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: not get past Carson Wentz, let alone Kyler Murray. So
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: John Harbaugh had said, yeah, they hadn't made the deal,
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: but Jameis Winston is still the number one guy, at
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: least for now, so.
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: He said, Jameis will be the starter for as long
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: as I can see into the future. But I don't know.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: Nobody knows.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: What I do know is that we're going to be
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: playing this game against the Cardinals on Sunday, and Jameis
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: will be our starter for sure.
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: And he's going to play a winning football game.
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: So.
- 1:42:45Speaker 8: An upgrade over Jake Hainer, I guess. That's what we're
- 1:42:48Speaker 8: down to on J.J. McCarthy.
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: I would be very surprised, Craig, if we don't see
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: him at least once or twice before the end of
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: the year.
- 1:42:55Speaker 8: You got to see what you have.
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: Well, yeah. And who knows, you know, with Jameis. I mean,
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: if he.
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: He doesn't perform well. There'll be the pressure to get
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: him out there and see what you got with McCarthy.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: It's coming.
- 1:43:05Speaker 8: He'll keep him afloat, but he'll also throw some pick sixes.
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: program on 13 Under the Zone.
