- 0:05Speaker 1: Here to keep you and your life focused on God
- 0:09Speaker 1: by taking time with God together. I hope that our
- 0:12Speaker 1: time with God together is just the first bit of
- 0:16Speaker 1: time that you spend with God, but that you spend
- 0:19Speaker 1: much more time with Him each day as you learn
- 0:22Speaker 1: to put God first in your life. And you know
- 0:26Speaker 1: this week, we've been asking the question, who needs Jesus?
- 0:31Speaker 1: And we've looked at this passage in Ephesians chapter 2,
- 0:35Speaker 1: we've seen that.
- 0:37Speaker 1: We have inherited from our parents and their parents and
- 0:40Speaker 1: their parents before them all the way back to the
- 0:42Speaker 1: first people who lived on earth, we've inherited spiritual deadness.
- 0:50Speaker 1: When those first people took their beautiful relationship with God
- 0:53Speaker 1: and rebelled against God and rejected Him, something changed in
- 0:58Speaker 1: their basic nature.
- 1:01Speaker 1: So that their relationship with God was broken, and we
- 1:06Speaker 1: have inherited that brokenness, so that as we live our lives,
- 1:11Speaker 1: we don't have the life of God flowing through us.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We don't have a good relationship with God, and if
- 1:17Speaker 1: we want that, we need Jesus who can take us
- 1:21Speaker 1: back into a good relationship with God.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And because of that broken relationship with God, we find
- 1:27Speaker 1: a natural tendency within us to live very selfish lives
- 1:32Speaker 1: and to even desire to do things that we know
- 1:35Speaker 1: are wrong, that, uh, are damaging both to ourselves and
- 1:39Speaker 1: the people around us. We find ourselves unable to change
- 1:43Speaker 1: that desire to be selfish.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Only God can change that in us. We need Jesus.
- 1:52Speaker 1: We've seen also that, uh, our disobedience to God, our
- 1:58Speaker 1: selfish lives that so often do things we know, um,
- 2:02Speaker 1: go against our conscience, against what we know would be right.
- 2:06Speaker 1: That that makes us guilty before God, God, the Judge
- 2:12Speaker 1: of this universe. We face God's judgement. There's no way
- 2:16Speaker 1: for us to escape that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Only God could do something well, if we keep reading
- 2:22Speaker 1: after the verses we've been looking at, we find that
- 2:24Speaker 1: God did do something.
- 2:26Speaker 1: It says in verse 4, but God.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's just described all these things we talk about, and
- 2:34Speaker 1: it says, but God, being rich in mercy because of
- 2:39Speaker 1: His great love with which He loved us, even when
- 2:44Speaker 1: we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together
- 2:49Speaker 1: with Christ. By grace you have been saved.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And raised us up with Him and seated us with
- 3:00Speaker 1: Christ in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus in order
- 3:03Speaker 1: that in the ages to come He might show the
- 3:06Speaker 1: surpassing riches of His grace in kindness to
- 3:11Speaker 1: Toward us in Christ Jesus, for by grace you have
- 3:16Speaker 1: been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It
- 3:21Speaker 1: is the gift of God, not as a result of works,
- 3:25Speaker 1: so that no one should boast.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Do you know if you could be saved from your
- 3:31Speaker 1: self-centered life that is destructive to yourself and others, if
- 3:35Speaker 1: you could be saved from the justice of God that
- 3:39Speaker 1: awaits you, then there would be no need for Jesus
- 3:44Speaker 1: to have died.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But the fact is we cannot earn salvation. There's nothing
- 3:49Speaker 1: we can do to undo the ways we have broken
- 3:52Speaker 1: God's laws. We can't buy God's grace. We can't pay
- 3:56Speaker 1: off our misdemeanours against God. No, we have to come
- 4:02Speaker 1: to God in humility and say, Oh God, I'm helpless
- 4:06Speaker 1: to fix my life.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I can't provide forgiveness for myself, and I can't change
- 4:13Speaker 1: the brokenness that's in me. I need you.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You know, when you express that to God, God comes,
- 4:22Speaker 1: He does what you cannot do. Jesus takes your place
- 4:26Speaker 1: in God's judgement when he dies on the cross, and
- 4:30Speaker 1: your sins are forgiven.
- 4:32Speaker 1: And God comes in and changes your basic nature so
- 4:37Speaker 1: that now there is a desire to honour Him and
- 4:40Speaker 1: obey Him. Yes, there's still temptation and struggle, but now
- 4:44Speaker 1: God is in your life and life is different and better.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You need Jesus.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'm John North
