- 0:00Speaker 1: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:04Speaker 1: Picture Association of America.
- 0:06Speaker 2: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:15Speaker 3: It's showtime, folks!
- 0:32Speaker 4: Hi, this is Tom Kane, the voice of Yoda.
- 0:34Speaker 5: And listening to Movie Meltdown, you are.
- 0:37Speaker 6: Yes.
- 0:45Speaker 7: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 0:49Speaker 2: There were only two who saw the meteor fall into
- 0:52Speaker 2: the lake long ago. One was an Indian brave, hunting
- 0:56Speaker 2: for food. He saw the fire streak arc down over
- 1:00Speaker 2: the water. and was afraid, because it was an omen
- 1:05Speaker 2: of ill favor when the stars left the heaven and
- 1:08Speaker 2: drowned themselves in the water. The other witness was a
- 1:14Speaker 2: fish who snapped greedily at the meteor as it fell.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Quite reduced in size now, the fish swam away, and
- 1:22Speaker 2: presently he died. That was 300 years ago.
- 1:31Speaker 8: You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain Imagine
- 1:35Speaker 8: love like the man you sang You broke my wind,
- 1:39Speaker 8: but what a thrill Cause when this get wrecked it's
- 1:41Speaker 8: just whittin' balls of fire I learned to love all
- 1:44Speaker 8: I thought it was funny You came along and you
- 1:47Speaker 8: blew me honey I changed.
- 1:49Speaker 3: My mind, but it's fine.
- 1:51Speaker 9: Cause when this get wrecked it's just whittin' balls of.
- 1:54Speaker 10: Fire Welcome to Moving Out Down Sofa Theater. Once again,
- 1:57Speaker 10: I am Brian.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Marlena.
- 1:59Speaker 10: I'm Greg.
- 2:00Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:01Speaker 7: We're back.
- 2:03Speaker 10: And welcome to the second installment of Greeno Bloody Greeno.
- 2:10Speaker 11: What?
- 2:10Speaker 5: There was no blood. I'm sorry.
- 2:13Speaker 7: It was horror-esque.
- 2:15Speaker 5: There you go.
- 2:16Speaker 10: Science fiction-y. I don't know. Our series looking at the
- 2:21Speaker 10: other films of Maria de Aragon. This week's Sofa Theater
- 2:26Speaker 10: feature is The Cremators. The year, actually, it was a
- 2:30Speaker 10: little off. 1972 is the year. The director, Harry Essex.
- 2:34Speaker 10: The plot, and I'm going to have to adjust a
- 2:36Speaker 10: little from the IMDb plot because I disagree with some
- 2:38Speaker 10: of it, as I usually do. An alien life form
- 2:42Speaker 10: that is a huge ball of living matter, a.k.a. fire,
- 2:46Speaker 10: invades Earth and replenishes itself by absorbing people, a.k.a. incinerating people.
- 2:52Speaker 10: That's how they put it. A lot of that's kind
- 2:54Speaker 10: of off, but, you know, it's IMDb. But before we
- 2:57Speaker 10: delve into it, it is time. And as part of
- 3:04Speaker 10: this little Maria de Aragon film festival here, we will
- 3:07Speaker 10: hear a few thoughts of hers on these movies. Today,
- 3:09Speaker 10: we will see what she remembers about The Cremators.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Oh, yes. Oh, an interesting little film.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Another one ahead of its time.
- 3:16Speaker 1: That was David....
- 3:21Speaker 5: I can't think of his last name at the moment.
- 3:23Speaker 7: He was crazy about this movie.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Well, he did The Black Lagoon.
- 3:28Speaker 7: We took him to The Black Lagoon.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And he found that I looked just like another actress.
- 3:35Speaker 10: I can't remember her name. But Adams. Miss Adams.
- 3:39Speaker 12: And....
- 3:41Speaker 1: Hired me for.
- 3:42Speaker 7: The part and I did like to work.
- 3:46Speaker 3: There's a film, there's a picture rather on the corner
- 3:48Speaker 3: here of it and.
- 3:53Speaker 10: I really like science fiction.
- 3:56Speaker 8: That was my first science fiction but then Star Wars
- 3:59Speaker 8: as I said was the role of all time.
- 4:02Speaker 10: So see sometimes it pays just to remind your director
- 4:05Speaker 10: of someone else. Because that was the Julie Adams that
- 4:08Speaker 10: she was talking about that I guess the director thought
- 4:10Speaker 10: she looked like her and that got her foot in
- 4:12Speaker 10: the door on this project. So sometimes, you know, that's
- 4:16Speaker 10: all the edge you need in Hollywood is just to
- 4:18Speaker 10: look like somebody else. Isn't that right, Keira Knightley?
- 4:21Speaker 7: Yeah, that's true.
- 4:23Speaker 5: Or the girl that looks like her.
- 4:24Speaker 10: Take that. Her and Skeet Aldridge and all the rest
- 4:28Speaker 10: of these bastards that wouldn't have a career if they
- 4:29Speaker 10: didn't kind of look sort.
- 4:31Speaker 7: Of like somebody that's a little more popular. Or has,
- 4:34Speaker 7: you know, anybody heard of, so.
- 4:36Speaker 12: Fuck.
- 4:36Speaker 11: I don't think Keira Knightley looks so much like Natalie
- 4:38Speaker 11: Portman now.
- 4:40Speaker 7: She did at the time.
- 4:41Speaker 12: She was, yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 10: Because at the time, I think when I saw that
- 4:45Speaker 10: Phantom Menace, I don't think I realized they weren't just
- 4:47Speaker 10: shooting double on her. Like a lot of them were
- 4:51Speaker 10: a little further off on some of those scenes. You know,
- 4:53Speaker 10: they tried to shoot it from across there because I
- 4:55Speaker 10: don't know how much they inserted her. But yeah, there
- 4:57Speaker 10: was a lot of the time I don't think I
- 4:59Speaker 10: realized that. And it was like years later, I think
- 5:01Speaker 10: we were, you know, as usual, I was at discussing
- 5:04Speaker 10: some sort of geekery with Misty. And she was like, no,
- 5:06Speaker 10: that was her. She's credited in the movie. And then
- 5:09Speaker 10: we had to go and check the credits. And there
- 5:11Speaker 10: she is.
- 5:11Speaker 9: Again, I can't remember.
- 5:12Speaker 11: What?
- 5:13Speaker 9: Why was she?
- 5:14Speaker 10: She was the stand-in queen. She was there to throw
- 5:19Speaker 10: them off. She was there.
- 5:21Speaker 7: It was her handmaid.
- 5:21Speaker 10: And then she was there to step in when she
- 5:23Speaker 10: needed somebody to look like her so she could go
- 5:26Speaker 10: off and gallivant around the galaxy with a nine-year-old.
- 5:28Speaker 9: Like an Elvis impersonator.
- 5:31Speaker 10: Kind of.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Yeah, or why didn't they just do the Patty Duke
- 5:35Speaker 5: route and have two Natalie Portmans?
- 5:37Speaker 10: See, that's what I figured. It's not like that was
- 5:39Speaker 10: cutting-edge technology. They were doing it on the Patty Duke show.
- 5:42Speaker 5: That's right.
- 5:42Speaker 10: At first, I thought that's what they did on most
- 5:44Speaker 10: of it because I wasn't really paying that much attention. But, yeah,
- 5:46Speaker 10: only years later. So, yeah, many, many an actor has
- 5:50Speaker 10: gotten their foot in the door just by kind of
- 5:53Speaker 10: looking like somebody else. All right, all that having been said,
- 5:57Speaker 10: we'll throw out the spoiler alert here.
- 5:59Speaker 7: But I don't really know what the hell we're.
- 6:01Speaker 10: Going to spoil, actually. I think the most you can
- 6:05Speaker 10: get out of this, I just gave you in the
- 6:06Speaker 10: plot synopsis. But, hey, you know, we said it. So,
- 6:11Speaker 10: all right.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Let's go to town. All right.
- 6:14Speaker 10: Where shall we begin?
- 6:16Speaker 5: Where's point A?
- 6:17Speaker 3: Um....
- 6:21Speaker 5: You said spoiler? Okay. What the hell was the Native
- 6:25Speaker 5: American dude doing running down an ATV trail? That was
- 6:30Speaker 5: the first thing that came to mind.
- 6:32Speaker 10: Well, hundreds of years ago, when the ATV trail was there,
- 6:37Speaker 10: there was a giant meteor thing, some sort of ball
- 6:41Speaker 10: of fire that fell to the earth. Right. And there
- 6:43Speaker 10: were only two creatures that saw it.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:45Speaker 10: One was an Indian dude hanging out on the ATV trail.
- 6:48Speaker 11: What was the significance of the only two creatures seeing it?
- 6:52Speaker 10: Because the earth was empty. 300 years ago.
- 6:55Speaker 5: 300 years ago.
- 6:56Speaker 10: 300 years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
- 6:59Speaker 5: And a hammerhead shark.
- 7:01Speaker 10: And a hammerhead shark and an Indian.
- 7:02Speaker 9: But they didn't even call it a hammerhead shark. They
- 7:04Speaker 9: called it a fish.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It was a fish.
- 7:06Speaker 9: I'm like, that's not a fucking fish. That's a shark.
- 7:07Speaker 10: Well, technically you still fish. Whatever. It's not a mammal.
- 7:11Speaker 5: They just told some production assistant, get a picture of
- 7:14Speaker 5: a fish.
- 7:14Speaker 7: Yeah, they just.
- 7:15Speaker 10: You know the guy doing the voiceover, which I think
- 7:18Speaker 10: is the director, had no idea what the hell they
- 7:20Speaker 10: were piecing in, probably. He was doing that like six
- 7:22Speaker 10: months beforehand, and then they're like, oh, well, whatever.
- 7:25Speaker 5: He's a fish.
- 7:25Speaker 10: Just run it. That's the only thing we got?
- 7:27Speaker 13: Hammerhead?
- 7:28Speaker 5: Oh, fuck it.
- 7:28Speaker 14: Go with it.
- 7:29Speaker 11: They make specific, you know, like an Indian brave, not
- 7:32Speaker 11: just like a person.
- 7:33Speaker 10: Some dude.
- 7:35Speaker 9: But then a fish, and it's not a fish. It's
- 7:37Speaker 9: a shark.
- 7:37Speaker 11: If you're going to be specific down to the fact
- 7:40Speaker 11: that this... to like what tribe he's from even though
- 7:42Speaker 11: they don't go into that but I mean they could.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Have Northern California hippie.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Name Jimmy right.
- 7:51Speaker 11: It's just a little off balance they could have been
- 7:53Speaker 11: like some okay some land mammal and a fish not.
- 7:59Speaker 10: Like they didn't do any research you think this is
- 8:02Speaker 10: the only thing in this movie that's off balance no
- 8:05Speaker 10: there's a good amount off balance in this movie oh So, yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 10: there's two creatures that see this thing fall to the earth.
- 8:13Speaker 10: One is an Indian brave who then gets chased down
- 8:16Speaker 10: the ATV trail and run over and is then.
- 8:22Speaker 10: So once again, they really shouldn't have called this movie
- 8:24Speaker 10: The Cremators as much as The Cremated.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:26Speaker 10: Because there really aren't any cremators. It's not like a
- 8:30Speaker 10: crazy plot about a mad cult that lives in a
- 8:33Speaker 10: crematorium and kidnaps people and burns them alive.
- 8:36Speaker 7: That'd be pretty cool. I'd be up for that.
- 8:40Speaker 10: No, this is just people who get incinerated by a
- 8:43Speaker 10: giant ball of fire. So The Cremators is kind of
- 8:46Speaker 10: a misleading title.
- 8:48Speaker 9: Much as.
- 8:51Speaker 16: blood mania it's a theme and once again if you
- 8:56Speaker 16: look at the box art it's awesome and it has
- 8:58Speaker 16: nothing to do there's like a girl tied up being
- 9:02Speaker 16: you know their clothes ripped off and a burning city
- 9:04Speaker 16: behind her and none of that takes place.
- 9:07Speaker 5: In this movie not even close.
- 9:09Speaker 10: So yeah i don't know what to do with it
- 9:12Speaker 10: so yeah the second one was the hammerhead shark Who
- 9:14Speaker 10: saw it and snapped at it and then swam away
- 9:17Speaker 10: and died.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:18Speaker 10: So, yeah, it took out the first two creatures that
- 9:21Speaker 10: saw it. That kind of gives you an idea of
- 9:24Speaker 10: how it's going to go for the rest of the
- 9:25Speaker 10: creatures involved.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Oh, Lord.
- 9:28Speaker 10: Then we cut ahead 300 years, and it felt like it,
- 9:33Speaker 10: to our hippie friend running on the beach.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:37Speaker 10: Now, you might as well get used to that shot,
- 9:40Speaker 10: because you're going to see a lot of it. Yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 10: that was weird. Hippie boy running back and forth on
- 9:45Speaker 10: the beach, which I believe you said was David Carradine.
- 9:48Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 7: Or David Cassidy.
- 9:49Speaker 5: David Cassidy.
- 9:50Speaker 7: David Cassidy.
- 9:50Speaker 5: More like David Cassidy.
- 9:52Speaker 7: Yeah, so David Cassidy.
- 9:54Speaker 10: Yeah, he definitely.
- 9:55Speaker 7: Until they did a close-up.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Wow.
- 9:56Speaker 10: From a distance, he had the lame hippie... hey kid,
- 10:00Speaker 10: get a haircut kind of hairdo going there. So yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 10: he definitely had that look. So it shows him running
- 10:07Speaker 10: and running for a long time as the credits are
- 10:10Speaker 10: going on. And then it cuts to what may be
- 10:11Speaker 10: my favorite scene in the entire damn movie. When it
- 10:16Speaker 10: just jump cuts, he's running with his hands by his
- 10:19Speaker 10: side the whole rest of the time. Bam, jump cuts
- 10:22Speaker 10: to him with his hands up in the air holding
- 10:24Speaker 10: a cat.
- 10:26Speaker 7: Running down the beach.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Then this cat enjoys being thrown in the air next
- 10:31Speaker 5: to the water.
- 10:32Speaker 10: What cat doesn't love to be by the water and
- 10:34Speaker 10: being run up and down, you know, slung around through
- 10:38Speaker 10: the air? Because cats love that sort of behavior.
- 10:42Speaker 11: I hope this stupid hippie got his eyes clawed out
- 10:44Speaker 11: after the scene got shot.
- 10:46Speaker 5: No, that cat died.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 7: Well, that's what happens when you eat rocks.
- 10:51Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Which.
- 10:53Speaker 10: we're getting ahead of ourselves but um yeah that's the
- 10:57Speaker 10: that's the funniest damn thing ever that hippie flailing a
- 11:00Speaker 10: cat around on the beach is the funniest thing i've
- 11:02Speaker 10: seen it's.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Like he pulled it out of his pocket yeah it's just.
- 11:05Speaker 10: There it's just there and then it cuts and it's
- 11:08Speaker 10: not there anymore and we go on with the rest
- 11:10Speaker 10: of the story and that had nothing to do with
- 11:12Speaker 10: anything but.
- 11:13Speaker 11: I just like the irrelevance of the whole scene it
- 11:16Speaker 11: was like It doesn't matter if he was running on
- 11:18Speaker 11: the beach by himself or with a cat because it
- 11:20Speaker 11: had no significance in the movie otherwise.
- 11:22Speaker 5: This movie's a little too short and we got this
- 11:25Speaker 5: footage of the guy running with a cat. Let's throw
- 11:27Speaker 5: that in.
- 11:28Speaker 10: Yeah, we got a lot of footage of this guy running.
- 11:30Speaker 10: What do you want to do with it?
- 11:32Speaker 5: Just splice it in anywhere. Whatever.
- 11:35Speaker 10: Just randomly throughout the movie.
- 11:37Speaker 5: And you know, splice is a good word to use
- 11:38Speaker 5: with this movie because normally I don't notice editing that much.
- 11:42Speaker 10: Yes. But this.
- 11:45Speaker 5: It would jump in and out of a scene. You're like,
- 11:48Speaker 5: why are they driving? They were just having sex. Why
- 11:50Speaker 5: are they... And you had no... It was about two
- 11:54Speaker 5: seconds into every scene when they would actually cut in.
- 11:57Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 10: We can veer off into the technical aspects here for
- 12:00Speaker 10: a minute. No, because there's quite a few. I was
- 12:02Speaker 10: getting to them one way or another, so now's a
- 12:05Speaker 10: good time as any. I don't know if I've seen
- 12:07Speaker 10: anything that made its way out on a regular labeled release.
- 12:11Speaker 10: And granted, this is a really cheap DVD.
- 12:14Speaker 4: But still.
- 12:15Speaker 10: that is as choppily edited, and some of it I
- 12:20Speaker 10: can't tell if it's just the print, because obviously the
- 12:22Speaker 10: people making this DVD didn't put any time or money
- 12:25Speaker 10: into restoring it. So this is just whatever print they found,
- 12:28Speaker 10: they made a copy and stuck it on DVD and
- 12:30Speaker 10: slapped it out there.
- 12:32Speaker 7: So I blame them for half-assing the DVD.
- 12:35Speaker 10: But again, I can't tell how much of it is
- 12:37Speaker 10: also just original, because you can also, I can say
- 12:41Speaker 10: this is some of the worst lighting ever. or lack thereof,
- 12:45Speaker 10: of any movie I've seen, maybe ever, certainly as a
- 12:49Speaker 10: major release.
- 12:50Speaker 5: And they never focused any scene at any point. It
- 12:55Speaker 5: was like, is that supposed to be? Is that the print? No,
- 12:58Speaker 5: they just didn't focus.
- 13:00Speaker 7: It's just not really in focus.
- 13:02Speaker 10: Oh, yeah. Some of the lighting was just like... It
- 13:05Speaker 10: would just be off in the darkness. Sometimes there were silhouettes.
- 13:08Speaker 10: There was once it almost looked like it was on purpose.
- 13:10Speaker 10: I gave them that. That was maybe trying to be artistic.
- 13:14Speaker 10: The rest of it was just bad lighting. And here's
- 13:17Speaker 10: the big question I have.
- 13:19Speaker 2: If....
- 13:20Speaker 10: If you already have trouble lighting your scenes during the daytime,
- 13:24Speaker 10: why shoot so much at night? Because half of this
- 13:28Speaker 10: movie takes place at.
- 13:29Speaker 7: Night, and you really can't see what the hell's going on.
- 13:33Speaker 10: No. That just seems like bad thinking on your part.
- 13:35Speaker 10: I mean, even then you could run back some dailies
- 13:38Speaker 10: and be like, wow, I can't even see the actors. Well,
- 13:41Speaker 10: six weeks and I choose.
- 13:42Speaker 11: Right.
- 13:42Speaker 7: I mean, does that seem like a good plan?
- 13:46Speaker 5: I think it's.
- 13:47Speaker 7: Because you couldn't see the out-of-focusness.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Well, yeah, and the cremator. You wouldn't be able to
- 13:57Speaker 5: see the cremator during the day, which is funny. It's
- 14:01Speaker 5: this glowing hot.
- 14:05Speaker 5: Massive fire people didn't notice until it was 15 feet
- 14:09Speaker 5: from them yeah look directly at it.
- 14:12Speaker 10: It's it's huge it's this uh bigger than a schooner
- 14:15Speaker 10: i think they say so this this fireball bigger than
- 14:19Speaker 10: a schooner.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Just sneaks up on you yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 10: You don't see it coming it's just there it is.
- 14:26Speaker 11: And they can't run from it no if there's a
- 14:29Speaker 11: path they think to run down that path they don't
- 14:31Speaker 11: run to the side.
- 14:32Speaker 10: Or that's where the atvs win i mean it's obviously
- 14:36Speaker 10: the best way to go and.
- 14:37Speaker 11: Then as soon as it's near them they just stop
- 14:40Speaker 11: lay down on the ground wait put.
- 14:42Speaker 10: Your arms in the right wait wait move your arms
- 14:44Speaker 10: a little bit there we go that matches the stock
- 14:46Speaker 10: footage of the the dust blowing away that is left
- 14:50Speaker 10: over after they're cremated. You get a nice little person
- 14:53Speaker 10: outline of dust, and then it just immediately... It gets
- 14:56Speaker 10: really windy all of a sudden. Yeah, the wind kicks
- 14:58Speaker 10: up all of a sudden.
- 14:59Speaker 11: And blows your cremated body's remains away. But I like
- 15:04Speaker 11: the fact that at one point, a man.
- 15:07Speaker 3: His car....
- 15:09Speaker 11: Everything he owns is incinerated, but the one thing intact
- 15:13Speaker 11: is this canvas mailbag. It destroyed the metal of a car,
- 15:19Speaker 11: but this canvas mailbag is totally fine.
- 15:21Speaker 7: But it was canvas.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Right, and it was U.S.
- 15:23Speaker 11: Mail.
- 15:24Speaker 5: That's untouchable.
- 15:24Speaker 7: That's true.
- 15:25Speaker 10: You can't destroy it. I've got chucks I've had for years.
- 15:29Speaker 10: They're pretty indestructible, that canvas.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Postmaster General, they know what they're doing.
- 15:35Speaker 9: Flame retarded retarded yes i said that on purpose.
- 15:42Speaker 10: Oh man so yeah just to wrap up the technicals
- 15:47Speaker 10: there um yeah you have some of the worst camera
- 15:49Speaker 10: work ever just right shaky cam before they knew it
- 15:52Speaker 10: was cool just because they didn't you know bother to
- 15:55Speaker 10: put it on a tripod or find some way of
- 15:58Speaker 10: securing it so there's a lot of very uh shaky
- 16:01Speaker 10: footage going on here You know.
- 16:03Speaker 5: The one time I did notice at the beginning they
- 16:06Speaker 5: were panning with the camera in a few moments and
- 16:10Speaker 5: you could tell it was on a tripod and using
- 16:12Speaker 5: the hand-mounted, you know, I don't know the technical term.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Handle.
- 16:17Speaker 5: And you could see where it would get to a
- 16:19Speaker 5: spot that would jump because it wasn't a smooth motion.
- 16:23Speaker 5: And you're like, just pick it up off the tripod
- 16:27Speaker 5: at that point, please. You need to lube up your tripod.
- 16:30Speaker 5: It ain't running smooth.
- 16:31Speaker 10: No, but.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it was pretty bad. I think everything was just fucking.
- 16:36Speaker 10: Go with it.
- 16:38Speaker 7: It really was. And granted, they had no budget. I'll
- 16:40Speaker 7: give them that.
- 16:41Speaker 10: I think at best they guessed it was $ 50, 000, which
- 16:43Speaker 10: I think we estimated last week. I think that was
- 16:45Speaker 10: a little high, because to me last week was about
- 16:47Speaker 10: twice the budget of this one, at least. So yeah,
- 16:50Speaker 10: last week we might have been off a little, because
- 16:52Speaker 10: I think they actually said this was like $ 50, 000, which.
- 16:55Speaker 7: Is pretty minimal for a movie, but still, you can
- 16:58Speaker 7: come out.
- 16:58Speaker 10: With a little better quality finished product than this.
- 17:00Speaker 12: Right.
- 17:02Speaker 10: So, yeah, the only other one I wanted to mention
- 17:04Speaker 10: technical-wise is that the, again, this is probably more editing
- 17:08Speaker 10: after the fact, and as we stated with the random
- 17:11Speaker 10: hippie shots and whatnot, there were just pieced-in insert shots
- 17:16Speaker 10: of whatever. If I saw one more shot of that
- 17:20Speaker 10: badly framed top of the lighthouse.
- 17:23Speaker 5: It was out of focus.
- 17:25Speaker 10: Jesus. I mean, seriously, it's not even framed. It's like
- 17:28Speaker 10: in the bottom fourth of the frame. It's barely in
- 17:32Speaker 10: the picture. And that's such an awesome shot. They put
- 17:34Speaker 10: it in there 13 times. At any given moment when
- 17:38Speaker 10: they had nothing else to do in the scene, they're
- 17:40Speaker 10: just like, cut to that shot.
- 17:41Speaker 5: Of the lighthouse no i i think that was it
- 17:44Speaker 5: was it was symbolic because it would it was the
- 17:47Speaker 5: beacon just like the little rocks were the beacon to
- 17:50Speaker 5: its mother that's that that was symbolic usually i'm the
- 17:53Speaker 5: only one reaching for this bullshit you didn't take that
- 17:56Speaker 5: from that that's what they were.
- 17:58Speaker 10: Trying to do thank you thank you for going there
- 18:00Speaker 10: because i i need that usually i'm the only one
- 18:03Speaker 10: coming up with this shit so yeah i'm sure that's
- 18:05Speaker 10: what it was uh.
- 18:07Speaker 5: Just horribly um horribly.
- 18:10Speaker 10: Executed yeah yeah it's it's just again i think i
- 18:14Speaker 10: think you're right i think it's just that fuck it
- 18:15Speaker 10: go in it yeah we gotta have this out in
- 18:17Speaker 10: the theater by next week just piece it together right what.
- 18:20Speaker 7: Do we need to fill uh.
- 18:21Speaker 10: We need to be over 60 minutes because it's very
- 18:25Speaker 10: short so i think even with the insert shots they
- 18:27Speaker 10: were like push in like an hour and 15 minutes
- 18:30Speaker 10: or something.
- 18:30Speaker 5: It's really because it seems a lot it seems.
- 18:33Speaker 10: A lot longer but i'm pretty sure it's very short
- 18:36Speaker 10: run time There was five solid minutes of him walking
- 18:40Speaker 10: through the woods in poorly lit light.
- 18:43Speaker 5: Poorly lit light, that's horrible. Out of focus, and you
- 18:48Speaker 5: had no idea. You could have done it in 30 seconds,
- 18:50Speaker 5: but no, it was five minutes.
- 18:51Speaker 7: Yeah, which I think is towards the end, right? Okay,
- 18:55Speaker 7: we'll get to that then.
- 18:55Speaker 5: I'm sorry. Well, just to.
- 18:58Speaker 7: Finish, let's see, where else?
- 19:01Speaker 10: Then we get to the mail carrier who brings him
- 19:04Speaker 10: his bug magazines. I wish I would subscribe to Bug Magazines.
- 19:09Speaker 10: Why haven't I? can i know they're out there i
- 19:12Speaker 10: really need to get a couple of subscriptions going to.
- 19:14Speaker 9: My bug magazine i know people who get reptile magazines.
- 19:17Speaker 10: Well there are there truthfully there's a magazine for anything
- 19:21Speaker 10: no matter how ridiculous and what you think is your
- 19:23Speaker 10: own personal thing that you're into there's a magazine devoted
- 19:26Speaker 10: to it and it's waiting for you out there.
- 19:28Speaker 5: And there's somebody more interested in it than you yeah
- 19:31Speaker 5: and there's somebody just waiting to call you out for
- 19:33Speaker 5: not being uh schooled enough on whatever the hell it
- 19:36Speaker 5: is And then they write an article for that magazine.
- 19:39Speaker 10: So, yeah, then we get to where we introduce the
- 19:43Speaker 10: female lead, which would be Maria. And they come in
- 19:47Speaker 10: and immediately almost go into this weird... I don't know
- 19:51Speaker 10: if they were trying to be artistic, or they were
- 19:54Speaker 10: just trying to not have to shoot anything extra. Because
- 19:58Speaker 10: they're showing these random shots of them together, but then
- 20:00Speaker 10: they're doing voiceover that's.
- 20:03Speaker 7: Like, it's not matching.
- 20:04Speaker 10: It's just voiceover and almost in this weird dreamy little,
- 20:08Speaker 10: the whole thing sort of seems like a dream sequence.
- 20:10Speaker 10: It's just like a romantic dream sequence.
- 20:12Speaker 11: Yeah, they don't know each other, but all of a
- 20:14Speaker 11: sudden they're like, oh, nice to meet you.
- 20:16Speaker 9: Oh, I love you. I haven't seen you since I
- 20:18Speaker 9: was nine. You look so hot now.
- 20:21Speaker 10: And these are all during shots of them just like
- 20:23Speaker 10: walking down the stairs and him like, helping her he
- 20:26Speaker 10: like grabs her by the waist and picks her up
- 20:28Speaker 10: as she like walks over i don't know i was
- 20:30Speaker 10: like she he's already getting a little hands-on dude's a
- 20:33Speaker 10: little uh overstepping the bounds already you know he's.
- 20:35Speaker 5: Been stuck on that island with the he's got his
- 20:39Speaker 5: bugs he's got his bugs and he's a researcher it's
- 20:41Speaker 5: like me yeah and and a lighthouse what you know
- 20:44Speaker 5: they said he was a hermit so i'm sure he
- 20:46Speaker 5: was just a.
- 20:47Speaker 10: Girl exactly actually many listening to this right now will
- 20:51Speaker 10: have that same reaction Sorry, guys.
- 20:55Speaker 7: I include myself in that.
- 20:56Speaker 4: That's OK.
- 20:57Speaker 10: I can call you out. So, yeah, I actually.
- 21:00Speaker 5: Thought at the moment when they when they had that scene,
- 21:02Speaker 5: I thought that's intentional. That's actually kind of it's kind
- 21:05Speaker 5: of a it was like. an established montage of, yes,
- 21:09Speaker 5: they spent time together, and now this is after the fact,
- 21:12Speaker 5: and they're talking. It almost worked. If that was intentional,
- 21:17Speaker 5: that was a pretty good part of the movie.
- 21:18Speaker 7: I think, yeah, I was trying to give them credit
- 21:20Speaker 7: at that point.
- 21:20Speaker 10: It's still early on, so I'm just sort of like, yeah,
- 21:22Speaker 10: it's almost artsy, but at the same time it's being, like, succinct.
- 21:26Speaker 10: It's also like, well, we don't need to see them
- 21:28Speaker 10: stand there and say all this, you know, normal nonsense
- 21:31Speaker 10: to each other, so we'll cut it, we'll show the little...
- 21:34Speaker 10: relationship as it were progressing in this 20 minute period
- 21:37Speaker 10: but we'll cut it down to like you know 90
- 21:39Speaker 10: seconds top.
- 21:41Speaker 9: I really think they just had terrible.
- 21:43Speaker 11: Editing skills because you know it's like as much as
- 21:46Speaker 11: you don't want to focus on this relationship aspect you
- 21:51Speaker 11: want to show this stupid hippie running down the beach
- 21:53Speaker 11: for 45 minutes and then the guy walking through the
- 21:55Speaker 11: woods for like another 45 minutes it's a whole movie
- 21:58Speaker 11: right there they're like oh this relationship stuff it's gonna
- 22:01Speaker 11: take up too much time let's cut it out.
- 22:04Speaker 10: Well, they cut it out of the entire relationship. Because
- 22:07Speaker 10: once again, we'll enter into the same thing I called
- 22:09Speaker 10: him out for last week.
- 22:11Speaker 9: Sluts.
- 22:12Speaker 10: They knew each other for like a day. And bam,
- 22:14Speaker 10: he's already nailing her. I was just like, really? Come on, guys.
- 22:18Speaker 10: Have a little restraint. A little taste.
- 22:22Speaker 7: It was the 70s. It was the 70s.
- 22:26Speaker 9: Things are not different now.
- 22:27Speaker 10: Oh, I know. Once again, I just said I'm a dork.
- 22:30Speaker 10: I don't come in contact with girls. What do you want?
- 22:33Speaker 7: So.
- 22:33Speaker 10: once again this seems very strange i i don't understand
- 22:37Speaker 10: why he just all of a sudden he doesn't even
- 22:40Speaker 10: have to talk to her really i haven't seen you
- 22:42Speaker 10: since you were nine years old hey let's go screw
- 22:44Speaker 10: right and it works so you got to give him
- 22:46Speaker 10: credit because uh yeah then we see the the what
- 22:49Speaker 10: did you say the most romantic love scene oh no
- 22:52Speaker 10: wait how did you describe it.
- 22:55Speaker 11: Uh they just kind of laid their lifeless and she
- 22:57Speaker 11: pinched his back a little.
- 22:58Speaker 10: Bit yeah yeah and then it was over back action
- 23:01Speaker 10: and then there were birds running on the beach and
- 23:06Speaker 10: you know what.
- 23:06Speaker 17: That means hey if you ever make the birds run
- 23:10Speaker 17: on the beach uh-huh you you're going at it pretty
- 23:13Speaker 17: good You know, I don't even know what the point
- 23:16Speaker 17: of that scene was.
- 23:17Speaker 5: You didn't show anything.
- 23:18Speaker 10: Yeah, this is probably the only movie of the trilogy
- 23:22Speaker 10: here that we don't get nudity. So, yeah, it's kind
- 23:25Speaker 10: of weird that they bothered even having a love scene
- 23:28Speaker 10: when it didn't really... I mean, I guess unless they
- 23:30Speaker 10: just wanted to immediately solidify the fact that now they're
- 23:33Speaker 10: a couple.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:34Speaker 10: They're not just random people that sort of know each other. Now,
- 23:37Speaker 10: you know, they're a couple, so nothing solidifies that like sex, so.
- 23:42Speaker 7: I guess that's still true.
- 23:43Speaker 5: In the real world, too. I don't know.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Oh, Lord.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know.
- 23:47Speaker 10: Since they didn't show anything, it is kind of weird
- 23:49Speaker 10: that they even bothered putting that in there.
- 23:51Speaker 5: Right.
- 23:52Speaker 7: We had to see his back. We had to have that.
- 23:54Speaker 10: Hot man back. Oh, boy.
- 23:58Speaker 8: Anyway.
- 23:59Speaker 9: I was confused by his job.
- 24:00Speaker 3: He was into bugs.
- 24:04Speaker 11: But people kept calling him doctor, which, I mean, you
- 24:06Speaker 11: can be like a doctor of biology or whatever.
- 24:08Speaker 7: Bugology.
- 24:10Speaker 9: Well, whatever.
- 24:12Speaker 7: Entomologist?
- 24:13Speaker 9: Yeah, entomology. I don't know.
- 24:15Speaker 10: Well, I was trying to think, because that's the thing.
- 24:17Speaker 10: As they said it in there, the other guy referred
- 24:19Speaker 10: to him as a biologist. I was like, well, if
- 24:21Speaker 10: he likes bugs, isn't that an entomologist?
- 24:23Speaker 3: I mean, yes.
- 24:24Speaker 10: I'm a dork, but even I was kind of like,
- 24:26Speaker 10: I know the name of a bug doctor.
- 24:27Speaker 5: He was collecting rocks.
- 24:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:30Speaker 9: Yeah, he could have been.
- 24:34Speaker 9: Any number of these things.
- 24:35Speaker 11: I guess they just looped it in one big doctor-scientist category. Because,
- 24:40Speaker 11: like you said, they referred to him as a biologist.
- 24:42Speaker 11: He was clearly an entomologist or a geologist. But then
- 24:46Speaker 11: people kept bringing their dead pets to him and calling
- 24:49Speaker 11: him doctor.
- 24:50Speaker 9: Like he was like a vet.
- 24:51Speaker 10: Like a vet or just town doctor or something. No,
- 24:54Speaker 10: but this is my favorite part of the whole weird
- 24:57Speaker 10: science thing. This is how you know he's into science.
- 25:01Speaker 10: Because you go into his house slash lab, whatever the
- 25:03Speaker 10: hell that was. They only had one room in there,
- 25:05Speaker 10: so they kept going to that.
- 25:07Speaker 7: They had a clock on the wall.
- 25:07Speaker 10: It was pretty fancy.
- 25:09Speaker 7: Paneling and a clock on the wall.
- 25:10Speaker 10: So you go into this fancy set, and you know
- 25:13Speaker 10: he's into science because there's a fish tank there. But
- 25:16Speaker 10: it wasn't... And it's a bubbling.
- 25:18Speaker 9: But it wasn't serving the purpose of a fish tank.
- 25:21Speaker 9: It was part of his.
- 25:22Speaker 11: lab set like there was like a jar of barbicide
- 25:27Speaker 11: and a bubbling fish tank and some other jars of
- 25:30Speaker 11: stuff that would like bubble and do stuff but it's.
- 25:32Speaker 10: Not like it was a fish tank like there was
- 25:34Speaker 10: gravel in the bottom and fish swimmer it's a 10
- 25:36Speaker 10: gallon tank completely empty other than water with bubbles coming
- 25:41Speaker 10: up what the fuck purpose does that serve.
- 25:43Speaker 5: And there was a microscope in front of it He
- 25:46Speaker 5: was bunts and honeydew at that point.
- 25:48Speaker 10: Yeah, a bubble and fish tank and a microscope equals science.
- 25:53Speaker 5: At least he didn't have a beaker with a green
- 25:58Speaker 5: liquid foaming or something like that.
- 26:00Speaker 10: He still needs a little bzzz. Unless you have the,
- 26:04Speaker 10: what the hell are those called? Unless you have one
- 26:06Speaker 10: of those. I mean, how are you going to call
- 26:08Speaker 10: yourself a mad scientist? So I guess he was like
- 26:10Speaker 10: a sane scientist. Boring.
- 26:11Speaker 7: Boring. And it was boring.
- 26:15Speaker 5: But one thing I do know that he was not,
- 26:17Speaker 5: his buddy the physicist, when he came to town, he
- 26:20Speaker 5: made sure to clarify that he was the physicist, not
- 26:23Speaker 5: the biologist.
- 26:24Speaker 10: Yeah, he pointed out a couple of times he was
- 26:26Speaker 10: the physicist. And they were both well-regarded in their field
- 26:29Speaker 10: or something to that effect. They liked to point out
- 26:31Speaker 10: that they were quite schooled.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Are you saying this is what killed that seaman?
- 26:39Speaker 15: That's the container that I mailed those two droplets to
- 26:42Speaker 15: you in. Only when I found this, the two droplets
- 26:46Speaker 15: were missing. Anything that can do that to a piece
- 26:51Speaker 15: of metal can do a pretty good job on a
- 26:54Speaker 15: human body, wouldn't you say so?
- 26:58Speaker 2: Ian, I'm a physicist. As you're a biologist, we both
- 27:02Speaker 2: deal in scientific facts. What's yours say?
- 27:05Speaker 15: But Willie, two men were burned to death.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Well, it could be what the medical examiner thinks.
- 27:18Speaker 12: A car overturned.
- 27:21Speaker 5: Or lightning.
- 27:25Speaker 14: You're not really that skeptical, are you?
- 27:28Speaker 6: No.
- 27:31Speaker 2: I'm just baffled.
- 27:32Speaker 10: Which didn't really help him in most of this.
- 27:34Speaker 11: Well, I guess if you don't have the acting skills
- 27:36Speaker 11: to portray that you're a physicist and the director or
- 27:40Speaker 11: the person writing the movie can't. How do these people
- 27:45Speaker 11: know that this guy's a physicist? Oh, he's going to
- 27:47Speaker 11: have to say it four times.
- 27:49Speaker 5: We can't spring for lab codes.
- 27:51Speaker 10: He had like a blazer.
- 27:52Speaker 7: Come on. I mean, in that town, that makes him
- 27:54Speaker 7: a scientist.
- 27:56Speaker 10: You've got the town hick that's the sheriff, and you've
- 27:59Speaker 10: got the guy with the giant beard and the bald head.
- 28:02Speaker 10: I mean, among these yokels, the guy in the blazer
- 28:05Speaker 10: is a scientist, let me tell you. I don't know.
- 28:10Speaker 10: I guess we can address now what the.
- 28:13Speaker 10: What these creatures are at best we can because i'm
- 28:16Speaker 10: still not 100 sure right so should we start with
- 28:21Speaker 10: the rocks or the fireballs no start with the rocks
- 28:23Speaker 10: they started with the okay there's rocks they look like
- 28:27Speaker 10: rocks they kind of have a weird paint job or
- 28:29Speaker 10: something there's some yellow paint on them or something and
- 28:33Speaker 10: then they glow and sometimes they make a little titty
- 28:38Speaker 10: noise but nobody else seems to be able to hear
- 28:40Speaker 10: that except for us that's the magic of movie making
- 28:42Speaker 10: I guess because they see them glowing but they don't
- 28:44Speaker 10: really hear the noise like we do we get that
- 28:46Speaker 10: benefit at home so yeah they're living entities I suppose
- 28:55Speaker 10: pieces of a larger living entity and they think.
- 28:59Speaker 5: And they can roll and they can burn through things.
- 29:03Speaker 10: And they scoot.
- 29:04Speaker 5: And they can scoot. But not too far or too fast.
- 29:07Speaker 11: No.
- 29:08Speaker 5: Because you can just put them back if you want to.
- 29:10Speaker 7: And you'd think that would piss them off since they
- 29:12Speaker 7: have personality.
- 29:13Speaker 5: I feel like Mexican jumping beans.
- 29:14Speaker 10: They really should have been.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Yeah, that would have been cool.
- 29:16Speaker 10: And then like giant moths would have busted out of
- 29:18Speaker 10: them and attacked their face.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:19Speaker 10: Once again, I'm making many better movies.
- 29:22Speaker 11: Actually, yeah, because I'm horribly afraid of moths. I mean,
- 29:25Speaker 11: today I was locking my door and this moth flew
- 29:28Speaker 11: at me and I screamed and Started jumping and almost
- 29:31Speaker 11: fell off my step, which is about four feet tall,
- 29:33Speaker 11: so I could have been killed today by a moth.
- 29:36Speaker 10: I thought you were locking it from the moth, like
- 29:38Speaker 10: he was going to turn the doorknob and.
- 29:40Speaker 9: don't know why I'm so afraid of them. I think
- 29:43Speaker 9: it's because they're just so.
- 29:45Speaker 5: Fluttery?
- 29:46Speaker 9: I don't know. They're dusty and they're just ugly.
- 29:49Speaker 5: A nighttime butterfly?
- 29:51Speaker 14: I don't like them.
- 29:51Speaker 9: I don't like butterflies either.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Oh, well.
- 29:54Speaker 10: That's anti-girly.
- 29:56Speaker 7: What's wrong with you?
- 29:56Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 29:57Speaker 3: I hate.
- 29:58Speaker 11: anything with butterfly motif on it naturally but no just
- 30:02Speaker 11: in general like my friends porches infested with butterflies and
- 30:06Speaker 11: they always want to like attack my face like laying on.
- 30:09Speaker 9: My face and bait on my face I'm like.
- 30:11Speaker 5: I'd hate them too if they were mating on my.
- 30:14Speaker 10: Face please stop fucking on my face it's not too much.
- 30:20Speaker 3: To ask.
- 30:22Speaker 5: God that would have been a better.
- 30:23Speaker 10: Movie yeah really once again we're up to like three
- 30:26Speaker 10: more awesome movies sorry the cremator.
- 30:31Speaker 9: Yeah but um I don't even know why we're talking about.
- 30:35Speaker 10: Moths but Mexican jumping beans that these rocks weren't so
- 30:41Speaker 10: yeah they just sort of lay there and glow and
- 30:43Speaker 10: glow and lay there most of the time I really
- 30:46Speaker 10: don't even see them move until the very end I
- 30:47Speaker 10: thought they just were rocks and then toward the end
- 30:50Speaker 10: I was like oh I guess they're semi-functional living beings
- 30:54Speaker 10: and they move around and yeah I don't know so
- 30:57Speaker 10: and if you touch them Your hands will glow. That's right.
- 31:01Speaker 5: Only if you slap them together.
- 31:02Speaker 10: If you clap like a hippie, because the hippie loves
- 31:06Speaker 10: to clap his hands and show you that his hands glow.
- 31:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:12Speaker 10: It makes no real sense as to why they glow.
- 31:15Speaker 10: I guess it's just residual space dust on your.
- 31:18Speaker 17: Hands, but.
- 31:20Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 31:20Speaker 10: It doesn't really serve any purpose. Nothing really happens because
- 31:23Speaker 10: of it, right?
- 31:23Speaker 7: Your hands just glow.
- 31:24Speaker 5: I think they suspected that they may come after them, too.
- 31:28Speaker 5: But they didn't really.
- 31:29Speaker 16: No.
- 31:29Speaker 7: They were just coming after the leftover rocks.
- 31:32Speaker 5: Right.
- 31:32Speaker 10: So that's basically our plot here. What it comes down
- 31:35Speaker 10: to is the big entity, the fireball, is the mama.
- 31:40Speaker 10: And during the crash landing, you lose a whole bunch
- 31:43Speaker 10: of the little baby rocks. So then basically the whole
- 31:46Speaker 10: movie is just the mama collecting the babies. And in
- 31:49Speaker 10: the process, anybody who gets in the way or pisses
- 31:52Speaker 10: them off gets taken out incinerator style. That's pretty much it.
- 31:58Speaker 9: You'd think she could have... She's had 300 years to
- 32:00Speaker 9: do this.
- 32:01Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 32:01Speaker 10: And can't she make the ting-ting noise and call them
- 32:03Speaker 10: to her? I mean, they can scoot. Can't they just
- 32:05Speaker 10: come and, like, find her?
- 32:07Speaker 5: And, you know, she collected 30 of them in the
- 32:10Speaker 5: course of two days. 300 years.
- 32:13Speaker 10: Yeah. Well, and they never really spell out exactly what's
- 32:17Speaker 10: going on with the timeline because then there's, like, the
- 32:20Speaker 10: legend that says it's, like, every 100 years it comes out.
- 32:23Speaker 5: So it's like.
- 32:24Speaker 7: why i mean why does.
- 32:25Speaker 10: This entity from another you know planet or wherever need
- 32:29Speaker 10: to rest for 100 years at a time and then
- 32:32Speaker 10: come out and eat people or whatever the hell it
- 32:36Speaker 10: does just incinerate them and then go back to napping
- 32:38Speaker 10: in the bottom of the lake.
- 32:39Speaker 7: Or wherever whatever it.
- 32:42Speaker 10: Does i mean again it doesn't spell out any of
- 32:44Speaker 10: the specifics in this for two guys who know so
- 32:46Speaker 10: much about science You think they would tell you exactly
- 32:49Speaker 10: what the hell's going on in this scientific plot, but.
- 32:52Speaker 5: He said physicist, but not astrophysicist. So, you know, he
- 32:55Speaker 5: was kind of.
- 32:55Speaker 10: Physicists?
- 32:56Speaker 7: They're dumbasses.
- 32:57Speaker 10: You're not an astrophysicist. Don't waste my time.
- 33:00Speaker 5: That's right.
- 33:01Speaker 7: If you're a physicist, I'm sorry.
- 33:03Speaker 10: So, uh, yeah. I'm sure we have a huge listenership
- 33:08Speaker 10: of physicists.
- 33:09Speaker 5: Neil deGrasse Tyson actually listens to the show.
- 33:13Speaker 7: He wrote in last week. I don't know what you're
- 33:14Speaker 7: talking about.
- 33:15Speaker 10: Yeah, we never really figure out exactly what the scenario
- 33:18Speaker 10: is as to why it's gone for certain periods of time,
- 33:21Speaker 10: why it's taken 300 years to collect all these.
- 33:24Speaker 5: And we're sure that they don't know either.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:28Speaker 7: Harry Essex, the writer and director.
- 33:31Speaker 5: Well, while we're covering the mother, I did want to
- 33:33Speaker 5: point out that the flaming ball is, what, 15, 20
- 33:38Speaker 5: feet high, probably? Bigger than a schooner. Bigger than a schooner,
- 33:41Speaker 5: but it does look like a glowing cheese ball. A
- 33:46Speaker 5: planter's cheese ball. A planter's cheese ball, yeah, that rolls
- 33:48Speaker 5: after you. So if we need that visual image, that's
- 33:50Speaker 5: pretty much what it is.
- 33:51Speaker 10: Truthfully, I have to say, of all the cheesiness and
- 33:53Speaker 10: bad stuff going on in here, I like the fireballs.
- 33:56Speaker 7: Once again, I'm, like, perpetually six years old, and I'm like.
- 34:00Speaker 10: Cool, rolling fireball. Like, I still, there's part of it that, yes,
- 34:04Speaker 10: it's cheesy. Yes, the images look really bad, but there's
- 34:08Speaker 10: part of me that's still.
- 34:08Speaker 5: Like, oh, awesome.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Fire.
- 34:11Speaker 10: Fire.
- 34:12Speaker 7: In a ball, rolling it.
- 34:13Speaker 3: People, look, it ain't that dude.
- 34:15Speaker 5: It never leaves a charred wake behind it. And they
- 34:18Speaker 5: didn't even throw down some dark dust. Yeah, I like
- 34:22Speaker 5: that it didn't.
- 34:24Speaker 11: Incinerate anything other than the person. Except that one time
- 34:27Speaker 11: it incinerated the car. But not the ground or the
- 34:31Speaker 11: bushes or anything else.
- 34:33Speaker 7: And again, am I just reaching?
- 34:36Speaker 10: Or was it underwater the whole time?
- 34:38Speaker 5: Mostly.
- 34:39Speaker 10: So... How does fire keep being fire underwater? I mean,
- 34:43Speaker 10: I know it's an alien entity and it does whatever
- 34:45Speaker 10: the hell it wants, but I mean, if it were
- 34:46Speaker 10: following the rules of fire, which it seems to when
- 34:48Speaker 10: it burns the hell out of these people, wouldn't water
- 34:51Speaker 10: be a bad place for you to go and hide?
- 34:52Speaker 9: Some, yeah.
- 34:54Speaker 5: I mean, really.
- 34:56Speaker 11: Right.
- 34:58Speaker 5: You know, it did say that if you put the
- 34:59Speaker 5: rocks in a bucket of water, a bucket of ice,
- 35:01Speaker 5: wasn't it, that it would probably melt the pail before
- 35:05Speaker 5: it melted the ice?
- 35:06Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 7: I don't know how the physicists knew.
- 35:09Speaker 5: That or why that would work. Or what that means.
- 35:12Speaker 10: What's the science behind that?
- 35:14Speaker 5: In physics, that doesn't work.
- 35:16Speaker 7: It's a cool fact.
- 35:17Speaker 10: Right.
- 35:18Speaker 7: I don't know what it means.
- 35:19Speaker 5: I don't know how you tested that theory in a lab,
- 35:22Speaker 5: but he did. I got a bucket.
- 35:24Speaker 10: Let's test his mother.
- 35:26Speaker 5: And apparently the best physicist in the world is in
- 35:28Speaker 5: Ann Arbor, Michigan. So it must be at University of Michigan?
- 35:33Speaker 7: I believe, yeah. That's where he was shipping it off.
- 35:35Speaker 10: So, yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 5: Michigan.
- 35:37Speaker 10: That explains a lot, actually.
- 35:39Speaker 12: Michigan.
- 35:40Speaker 10: Look out.
- 35:41Speaker 9: Look out, like Harvard, Yale, and Brown.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:45Speaker 5: MIT, no.
- 35:48Speaker 10: Just go up there next to the crazy gunmen off
- 35:51Speaker 10: stockpiling ammunition.
- 35:53Speaker 5: And if you're a physics student at University of Michigan,
- 35:56Speaker 5: let us know if you've got a good department.
- 35:59Speaker 10: Or if you have a militia up there.
- 36:02Speaker 7: Whichever of the two.
- 36:05Speaker 10: Man, I hope we hear from Michigan now. We're trying
- 36:08Speaker 10: to get different areas to come in. Last week it
- 36:10Speaker 10: was like Connecticut. This week, Michigan.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Michigan.
- 36:14Speaker 7: Call out a whole state.
- 36:17Speaker 5: There you go.
- 36:17Speaker 7: Each week we pick a state.
- 36:19Speaker 10: Let's hear it, Tennessee.
- 36:21Speaker 15: They generate heat, as you probably know. I found out
- 36:26Speaker 15: the hard way.
- 36:28Speaker 6: Sure you didn't try to do your own cooking?
- 36:30Speaker 5: Where did you find those little mouths?
- 36:33Speaker 15: The two I sent you came out of a dog's stomach.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Observe my findings. And you were almost right when you
- 36:38Speaker 2: said it generates heat. It gives off long infrared rays.
- 36:42Speaker 2: mostly stacked up around 200,000 angstroms. But its energy is
- 36:46Speaker 2: way out of proportion to what you'd expect of the equation. Also,
- 36:50Speaker 2: it's an individualist. Sometimes, a slight nudge will set it
- 36:55Speaker 2: off like a rocket. And then again, you can hit
- 36:57Speaker 2: it with a sledgehammer, and it won't perform at all,
- 37:01Speaker 2: even some.
- 37:02Speaker 10: Dune rollers is what they're called right officially that is
- 37:06Speaker 10: the legend and it actually is um it's based on
- 37:09Speaker 10: a a book that was uh originally was published as
- 37:12Speaker 10: julian c may who then later it's actually a woman
- 37:16Speaker 10: named judy so it's judy um i think what her
- 37:20Speaker 10: last name then becomes she gets married and she's judy
- 37:24Speaker 10: diskeys which is um how they credit her in the
- 37:27Speaker 10: in the beginning of the movie there but yeah it's
- 37:29Speaker 10: based on her short story the dune rollers Which I'm
- 37:33Speaker 10: kind of interested to see if they actually spell anything
- 37:35Speaker 10: out in the short story.
- 37:36Speaker 7: Right.
- 37:36Speaker 10: I don't know. Maybe if the book was better. Could be.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Maybe this is.
- 37:41Speaker 10: There's also a... I don't think I'd ever seen the
- 37:43Speaker 10: show Tales of Tomorrow.
- 37:45Speaker 1: No.
- 37:46Speaker 5: There's a.
- 37:46Speaker 7: Around that.
- 37:47Speaker 10: It's like a Twilight Zone, Outer Limits time period.
- 37:50Speaker 7: Like 52, I think. So it's... Right?
- 37:52Speaker 10: A little early, actually. But yeah, there's an episode of
- 37:55Speaker 10: that called The Dune Roller that's also based on the
- 37:57Speaker 10: same story. So I kind of need to go track
- 38:00Speaker 10: this down and see if they make sense of it.
- 38:01Speaker 11: All other formats of this were much better.
- 38:04Speaker 10: The hell you say. I can't believe that. Where do
- 38:09Speaker 10: we even go from here? We have the big boat scene.
- 38:12Speaker 11: Right.
- 38:13Speaker 10: Then we get Maria driving a boat, not very fast.
- 38:17Speaker 1: No.
- 38:18Speaker 10: And suddenly the guy realizes she's got the rock in
- 38:22Speaker 10: the boat with her. So then Mama decides to chase her.
- 38:26Speaker 10: So you've got a big boat scene or a big
- 38:28Speaker 10: chase scene on the boat, on the water with fire
- 38:31Speaker 10: on the water rolling, which again, I'm not sure how
- 38:34Speaker 10: that works. And she's not going very fast.
- 38:37Speaker 5: And she avoids it by turning.
- 38:41Speaker 10: Well.
- 38:42Speaker 5: Yeah. That buys her more time, which... Serpentine.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:46Speaker 5: Just like the Indian running at the beginning.
- 38:48Speaker 10: It can't keep up with you if you keep changing directions.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Right, right.
- 38:51Speaker 9: It's true for alligators.
- 38:53Speaker 13: Yeah, see?
- 38:53Speaker 10: Alligators, balls of fire, whatever's chasing you, just.
- 38:56Speaker 5: And it didn't have an ATV trail to follow, so.
- 38:59Speaker 4: It gets lost.
- 38:59Speaker 10: That's how you do it.
- 39:00Speaker 11: Right.
- 39:01Speaker 2: You know, I.
- 39:03Speaker 5: didn't understand her whole point in the movie they needed
- 39:06Speaker 5: a girl right that's about it we need a female
- 39:09Speaker 5: lead hmm.
- 39:11Speaker 10: How about you right what do i do i don't
- 39:14Speaker 10: care there's.
- 39:14Speaker 5: Really but there's really other than a to a love
- 39:16Speaker 5: interest which really doesn't yeah the thing there's not.
- 39:19Speaker 10: Much they don't they don't really pan out the love
- 39:21Speaker 10: interest thing and they don't really um go into anything
- 39:25Speaker 10: oh i mean she doesn't do anything other than that
- 39:27Speaker 10: big chase scene and then sort of show up at
- 39:29Speaker 10: a other occasions along the way. But yeah, she's not
- 39:32Speaker 10: really involved in anything other than that chase scene pretty
- 39:35Speaker 10: much for the rest of the movie.
- 39:36Speaker 5: You just want her to squeeze his back.
- 39:39Speaker 10: I guess. Who doesn't want a little back squeezing?
- 39:41Speaker 7: I mean, come on.
- 39:43Speaker 9: That just sounds gross. Isn't that like in a perverted
- 39:45Speaker 9: gross way? It just sounds gross.
- 39:47Speaker 10: I don't know why.
- 39:47Speaker 5: They're squeezing my back.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Ugh.
- 39:52Speaker 10: But what's funny is I've seen an interview with her,
- 39:55Speaker 10: not even of the one we did, but there's another
- 39:57Speaker 10: one where she's talking about this, and it's funny how much...
- 39:59Speaker 10: I guess even in these... I mean, I guess you're
- 40:01Speaker 10: an actor, period. You know, regardless of what your project is,
- 40:04Speaker 10: no matter how low budget or how cheesy it is,
- 40:07Speaker 10: it's like you still sort of approach it the same way.
- 40:10Speaker 7: Because she went into.
- 40:11Speaker 10: And she was talking about her character's motivation and how she...
- 40:15Speaker 10: You know, why she's coming back to town and how
- 40:17Speaker 10: she'd gotten out of a relationship. And that's why she
- 40:19Speaker 10: initially doesn't want to be involved in him. I'm like, well,
- 40:22Speaker 10: 20 minutes later, you're screwed.
- 40:23Speaker 3: But.
- 40:24Speaker 10: But, yeah, she doesn't want to be involved with him,
- 40:25Speaker 10: and she's still kind of, you know, she's standoffish, and
- 40:28Speaker 10: she doesn't want to get into it. So, I mean,
- 40:30Speaker 10: she brought all this into the storyline, and I'm like,
- 40:32Speaker 10: but it's not even in the storyline. So it's, I
- 40:35Speaker 10: don't know, it's sort of interesting just the artistic process
- 40:38Speaker 10: that she's still, you know, trying to put this much
- 40:41Speaker 10: work into the character, even when it's not in the
- 40:43Speaker 10: script itself.
- 40:44Speaker 11: I have a feeling that, you know, no one involved
- 40:48Speaker 11: in this movie could see how bad it was.
- 40:50Speaker 9: They thought it would be this, like, amazing artistic masterpiece.
- 40:53Speaker 11: So they just went with it, and when they watched
- 40:55Speaker 11: it at the end, they're like, are you fucking kidding me?
- 40:58Speaker 10: I don't even think it was that. I think it
- 40:59Speaker 10: was more of, I mean, again, look at a lot
- 41:01Speaker 10: of the stuff at this time period, some of which
- 41:04Speaker 10: we've watched in the last few months here. I mean, granted,
- 41:07Speaker 10: the quality on the lighting and editing is a little worse,
- 41:10Speaker 10: but I mean, the plot line and the acting, a
- 41:12Speaker 10: lot of it's not really any worse. I think this
- 41:14Speaker 10: was just a whole period of like... Just get it out. Yeah, well,
- 41:18Speaker 10: just like Grindhouse kind of stuff. And it was like,
- 41:20Speaker 10: just get it out there. Just, you know, we've got
- 41:22Speaker 10: a poster. Make a movie that sort of matches this poster.
- 41:26Speaker 7: Go.
- 41:26Speaker 10: You know, so they weren't really overly concerned with specifics
- 41:30Speaker 10: or sometimes even screenwriting or any of that. Which is
- 41:34Speaker 10: weird because this is actually a, you know, we can
- 41:37Speaker 10: give the director hell just for making this movie. And
- 41:40Speaker 10: keep in mind the year before this, he also made
- 41:41Speaker 10: the movie Octoman.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:44Speaker 7: A man with eight arms and looks like an Octoman.
- 41:47Speaker 7: Look it up on YouTube.
- 41:48Speaker 5: Yeah. Octoman.
- 41:49Speaker 10: So he maybe made some questionable choices as a director,
- 41:53Speaker 10: but we have to give him credit as a writer.
- 41:54Speaker 10: This is the guy who did co-write the original classic
- 41:57Speaker 10: creature from the black lagoon. So, I mean, he, he
- 42:00Speaker 10: wrote that, he wrote, it came from outer space. He
- 42:02Speaker 10: wrote the sons of Katie elder. I mean, he actually
- 42:05Speaker 10: worked consistently for over 30 years in Hollywood, just writing
- 42:08Speaker 10: scripts like year in and year out. And, um, seemed
- 42:11Speaker 10: to be drawn to sci-fi and westerns and crime dramas
- 42:14Speaker 10: did like a lot of dragnet and did like a
- 42:17Speaker 10: just a bunch of them along the way that were
- 42:19Speaker 10: just fell into like those three categories and i don't
- 42:22Speaker 10: know i give him credit as a writer which is
- 42:24Speaker 10: weird because it doesn't come off in this movie right
- 42:27Speaker 10: but um yeah he may have just should have stuck
- 42:29Speaker 10: to writing.
- 42:30Speaker 5: There was a whole lot of mystery elements to this
- 42:34Speaker 5: story i mean they really played it wasn't just a
- 42:37Speaker 5: monster movie or a drive-in yeah we're gonna you know
- 42:40Speaker 5: it was it most of the film was hey let's
- 42:43Speaker 5: figure out what's going.
- 42:44Speaker 10: On yeah they set it up like it is yeah
- 42:46Speaker 10: i mean the conventions of it is almost like because
- 42:49Speaker 10: early on really i said this is kind of like
- 42:51Speaker 10: the blob and i'm like well i mean there is
- 42:53Speaker 10: that aspect of this thing falls to the planet and
- 42:56Speaker 10: then you know people are wandering around trying to find
- 42:58Speaker 10: something there's there's elements that could have fallen into it's
- 43:01Speaker 10: just another monster movie like the blob Granted, this isn't
- 43:03Speaker 10: here as cool as the blob, but... No, the.
- 43:06Speaker 11: Reason I was comparing it to the blob, though, is
- 43:08Speaker 11: because it's just like this big mess that people have
- 43:10Speaker 11: no idea how to escape from.
- 43:11Speaker 9: Oh, my God, it's going to get me, and I
- 43:13Speaker 9: don't know what to do. That's why it's like the blob.
- 43:16Speaker 10: But go ahead the blob's awesome so um but yeah
- 43:19Speaker 10: i don't know what were you saying before.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Yeah no just oh the mystery mystery yeah and detective
- 43:24Speaker 5: story i think i think you can see those elements
- 43:27Speaker 5: in it now that you say that about dragnet so.
- 43:29Speaker 10: Yeah yeah i mean it does again i think it
- 43:31Speaker 10: sets it up much like a like a monster from
- 43:34Speaker 10: space kind of movie early on and there is that
- 43:36Speaker 10: little like trying to figure out what it is that
- 43:39Speaker 10: comes in later. Once the other physicist comes in, and
- 43:42Speaker 10: there are a lot of scenes with them just going
- 43:44Speaker 10: back and forth and talking, occasionally you can't understand them because,
- 43:48Speaker 10: once again, somebody on the foley needed to get together
- 43:51Speaker 10: because sometimes things don't match up. Sometimes sound effects just
- 43:55Speaker 10: sort of don't happen, you know. And then, yeah, even
- 43:58Speaker 10: just the dialogue doesn't come through sometimes. But, eh, you
- 44:02Speaker 10: don't really worry about it, really.
- 44:03Speaker 11: So.
- 44:04Speaker 7: Yeah, but there is.
- 44:05Speaker 10: A lot of explanation thrown in or them throwing theories
- 44:09Speaker 10: back and forth in the middle. I mean, you can
- 44:10Speaker 10: see writing there, but I don't know. It's still not
- 44:14Speaker 10: enough to really save the whole of this movie. But
- 44:17Speaker 10: you can see where there's still elements of what he
- 44:20Speaker 10: had done the whole rest of his career. This was
- 44:22Speaker 10: actually towards the end. He did a few other things like...
- 44:25Speaker 10: I think one in the 80s and one in the 90s.
- 44:27Speaker 10: But this was about the last big project that he had.
- 44:30Speaker 10: This was at the end of, seriously, year in and
- 44:32Speaker 10: year out, consistently putting things out since the 40s. Wow.
- 44:35Speaker 7: Yeah, he did a lot of work over the years.
- 44:39Speaker 5: Burnt out.
- 44:39Speaker 10: Yeah, I think he just burnt out. Giant ball of fire. Anyway,
- 44:43Speaker 10: so yeah, I think this was just sort of coming
- 44:46Speaker 10: to the end of his career. And after Octoman and
- 44:49Speaker 10: this one, I think he was ready.
- 44:50Speaker 4: To wrap it up.
- 44:52Speaker 10: The one thing that I know, and this is one that, because, again,
- 44:55Speaker 10: we've watched a good amount of, like, movies from this
- 44:58Speaker 10: time period, and it involves some sort of giant creature, usually,
- 45:02Speaker 10: or something along those lines that comes in, and they
- 45:05Speaker 10: always end up having.
- 45:05Speaker 7: A huge, like, ecological angle to it.
- 45:09Speaker 10: This really doesn't. For a guy who's all about science, and,
- 45:12Speaker 10: you know, you've got this thing from outer space, and
- 45:14Speaker 10: there's so many ways that they could have worked it
- 45:16Speaker 10: where they really sort of, you know, heavy-handedly played upon that, and, like.
- 45:21Speaker 7: Well, the reason it's here is because.
- 45:22Speaker 10: You're ruining the planet Earth, or just it's here because
- 45:27Speaker 10: your whole system's out of balance, especially with a hippie
- 45:30Speaker 10: in the middle of it. This hippie character could have
- 45:32Speaker 10: been there really preaching, or the scientists could have been
- 45:35Speaker 10: given all these scientific reasons that were destroying the ozone,
- 45:39Speaker 10: and that's why the fireball came down, which I don't
- 45:41Speaker 10: think they care about ozone yet.
- 45:42Speaker 7: That's like 10 years later, but.
- 45:45Speaker 10: five but so yeah i don't know it definitely could
- 45:49Speaker 10: have gone that way and most movies at this time
- 45:51Speaker 10: period seem to and this one doesn't it's just missing.
- 45:55Speaker 5: But they he's his little dialogue at the beginning when
- 45:58Speaker 5: he's reading into his recorder he did talk about how
- 46:02Speaker 5: ecologically and biologically we're not seeing things that we used
- 46:04Speaker 5: to see yeah things aren't showing up where they should
- 46:07Speaker 5: be and it almost seems like either they started out
- 46:10Speaker 5: trying to go down that route and then thought, you know,
- 46:12Speaker 5: we can't mesh our fireball with ecology in any way,
- 46:17Speaker 5: but we have to throw that in there or after
- 46:19Speaker 5: the fact they threw it in.
- 46:20Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 46:20Speaker 10: Cause it was a voiceover.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:22Speaker 5: So it could have been, it could have been either,
- 46:24Speaker 5: either or, but the, they did try for a little while.
- 46:27Speaker 10: It seemed like, yeah, it seemed like they set it up,
- 46:28Speaker 10: but then they just don't like most of the other,
- 46:31Speaker 10: like just about all of the giant monster movies we've
- 46:33Speaker 10: watched for the last, or is all like, really heavy
- 46:36Speaker 10: handed with you and your DDT or your whole, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 10: ecological systems out of whack. And you have this creature
- 46:42Speaker 10: has to be there to balance out this creature. And like,
- 46:44Speaker 10: they all have this message of some sort that they're
- 46:47Speaker 10: trying to put out there. And this could have gone
- 46:49Speaker 10: that route and really tried to, you know, shove something
- 46:51Speaker 10: down your throat.
- 46:52Speaker 7: I'm kind of. pleased that it does.
- 46:55Speaker 10: I mean, after a while, some of the other ones
- 46:56Speaker 10: all get too heavy handed about it, where this was
- 46:58Speaker 10: kind of like refreshing the fact that they.
- 47:00Speaker 7: Just let it go.
- 47:01Speaker 13: That's a big ball of fire and it kills people.
- 47:03Speaker 13: So let's go with that. You know, and, but there,
- 47:06Speaker 13: you know, there was no morality to it. Actually, it didn't,
- 47:10Speaker 13: it wasn't even searching these people out. It just wanted
- 47:12Speaker 13: it's the rest of its being backed with it. And
- 47:15Speaker 13: it didn't even acknowledge that, that we were human or alive.
- 47:19Speaker 13: You know, I just said, well, we just, happened to
- 47:22Speaker 13: be in the way it wasn't chasing anyone down it
- 47:25Speaker 13: just was going after what it had so um we
- 47:28Speaker 13: were bugs i think and him being a bug doctor
- 47:31Speaker 13: yeah maybe that's why we were seen as bugs and
- 47:34Speaker 13: we'll squash it to get what we need.
- 47:36Speaker 10: He yeah he mentions that that's probably the the only
- 47:39Speaker 10: minor thing they work in it's probably a little bigger
- 47:42Speaker 10: aspect that they were going for that we are It
- 47:45Speaker 10: is sort of looking at that or just trying to
- 47:48Speaker 10: introduce that type of thought that, you know, that you're
- 47:51Speaker 10: not the center of the universe. That really, you know,
- 47:54Speaker 10: what we think is so important here to some other
- 47:56Speaker 10: being somewhere else, you're insignificant. So we are the top
- 47:59Speaker 10: of the food chain here and everything revolves around human beings.
- 48:02Speaker 10: But we don't pay any attention to bugs and they're
- 48:04Speaker 10: just as, you know, they're living creatures too. So why
- 48:07Speaker 10: is it that on some other planet this giant ball
- 48:09Speaker 10: of fire can't do whatever the hell it wants and we're.
- 48:12Speaker 7: Just as insignificant? So, yeah, it definitely... works.
- 48:15Speaker 10: That in again pretty minorly it doesn't overwhelm you with
- 48:18Speaker 10: it but that's probably the only other bigger sort of
- 48:22Speaker 10: theme that could be coming into.
- 48:23Speaker 7: This if there is anything on this one No.
- 48:29Speaker 5: They just threw it all together and put it out.
- 48:31Speaker 10: Yeah, pretty much.
- 48:31Speaker 5: I think they tried. I think they were going to,
- 48:33Speaker 5: and I think they were just like, you know what,
- 48:34Speaker 5: let's just get this out.
- 48:37Speaker 7: Hurry up. More dead bodies blowing away in the wind.
- 48:39Speaker 5: They could have had some more dead bodies.
- 48:40Speaker 10: Yeah, it's actually pretty minor on the killings there. There's what,
- 48:44Speaker 10: like three, four total?
- 48:46Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 48:48Speaker 5: You never get a woman who dies and is screaming.
- 48:50Speaker 5: You always expect that. Maria does a little screaming along
- 48:54Speaker 5: the way. Spoiler alert.
- 48:55Speaker 10: She survives.
- 48:59Speaker 5: I think you might have already mentioned it.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 49:03Speaker 10: She must have survived. I was talking to her. That's right.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Oh, Lord.
- 49:08Speaker 10: I will go into the music. In the beginning, I
- 49:11Speaker 10: kind of liked the music. As the credits are rolling
- 49:14Speaker 10: and the hippies run on the beach, there's a whole
- 49:16Speaker 10: lot of really loud blaring. To me, it's very like
- 49:19Speaker 10: Planet of the Apes. It's like that whole little orchestrated,
- 49:24Speaker 10: huge horns just kind of blaring away.
- 49:30Speaker 7: And it's kind of fun for a minute.
- 49:33Speaker 10: As you go into it, they do work that blaring
- 49:36Speaker 10: horn like when they have a dramatic moment of The
- 49:39Speaker 10: doctor picking up a rock. I mean, yeah, it works
- 49:44Speaker 10: that like it's the most mind bending thing that could
- 49:48Speaker 10: ever happen.
- 49:48Speaker 18: Oh, my God.
- 49:49Speaker 7: Play that music. This is a shocking moment.
- 49:51Speaker 10: As he looks at a jar. He puts it in
- 49:53Speaker 10: the jar.
- 49:54Speaker 3: I know.
- 49:57Speaker 10: So, yeah, it's odd where they place those key little
- 50:02Speaker 10: musical notes. And then as we get like halfway into
- 50:05Speaker 10: the movie, we get this little like drum beat thing.
- 50:09Speaker 7: That won't stop.
- 50:10Speaker 10: It's like Chinese water torture. It's just, and it just
- 50:15Speaker 10: beats this little thing. And in all the parts where
- 50:18Speaker 10: they're wandering around in the dark, as you, as you
- 50:20Speaker 10: lovingly refer to those scenes.
- 50:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 50:24Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 50:24Speaker 10: All this part of them walking around, which granted there's
- 50:26Speaker 10: a lot of downtime in this middle. There's a lot
- 50:28Speaker 10: of people walking around and looking for a rock or,
- 50:30Speaker 10: you know, there's a whole lot of time spent on that.
- 50:33Speaker 10: That probably didn't need to be, which is why this
- 50:35Speaker 10: movie feels.
- 50:35Speaker 7: A lot longer than it is.
- 50:37Speaker 10: But, yeah, there's just this one little musical cue that
- 50:41Speaker 10: just plays over and over in a loop.
- 50:44Speaker 5: It's a loop, yeah.
- 50:45Speaker 10: And then the very end, like the last 15 minutes,
- 50:47Speaker 10: is another weird one that's sort of annoying, really. I've
- 50:52Speaker 10: heard it was sort of ripping off holes, so I
- 50:54Speaker 10: don't know. I'm not sure why they put that in
- 50:56Speaker 10: there because it's sort of grating as time goes on. Oh,
- 51:00Speaker 10: I don't know. What did you want to do on
- 51:02Speaker 10: the end of the movie as they're wandering around?
- 51:05Speaker 5: You know, I could have dealt with some kind of,
- 51:10Speaker 5: this is what I intend to do. I mean, yes,
- 51:13Speaker 5: you're trying to figure out what he's going to do
- 51:15Speaker 5: with it or how he's trying to deal with it
- 51:18Speaker 5: and everything. Can I spoil and tell what he was...
- 51:21Speaker 5: He brought some dynamite with him.
- 51:24Speaker 10: Once again, it hurts it that you can't see what
- 51:26Speaker 10: he's doing because the scene is so dark and at night.
- 51:28Speaker 7: Once again, good planning. But yeah, go ahead.
- 51:30Speaker 5: But they actually show him these rocks that can incinerate things.
- 51:37Speaker 5: He puts them in a bag right next to his
- 51:39Speaker 5: TNT and throws it over his shoulder and wanders around
- 51:43Speaker 5: the woods for half an hour.
- 51:45Speaker 7: They're not so smart.
- 51:46Speaker 5: You could say dumb as a rock, but that's a
- 51:50Speaker 5: little too on the head. Right, those rocks were actually smart.
- 51:54Speaker 5: And then, you know, I guess he's going to try
- 51:57Speaker 5: to trap the mom. But it just.
- 52:00Speaker 10: trapper or just destroyer.
- 52:02Speaker 5: Why did he have to travel so far they were
- 52:05Speaker 5: coming after.
- 52:05Speaker 10: It was coming after you anyway wherever you were wouldn't.
- 52:08Speaker 5: It have come to you and.
- 52:11Speaker 10: Then he digs a little hole so he can bury
- 52:13Speaker 10: the dynamite right and like you know so then he
- 52:17Speaker 10: covers it back up with dirt which is fine right
- 52:19Speaker 10: but then he like puts like straw over top of
- 52:21Speaker 10: it so it looks like it's normal right except that's
- 52:24Speaker 10: the only part of the area that has any straw
- 52:26Speaker 10: Everything else is like barren dirt and then some little
- 52:29Speaker 10: grassy stuff over around the corner by the rocks.
- 52:32Speaker 18: Right.
- 52:32Speaker 10: Nothing looks anything like where you just covered that up.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 52:35Speaker 10: So number one, it would be very obvious to somebody
- 52:37Speaker 10: on this planet that you just buried something there and
- 52:39Speaker 10: tried to cover it up.
- 52:40Speaker 7: But number two, it's a fireball from space. Are you
- 52:43Speaker 7: tricking it?
- 52:45Speaker 3: Why?
- 52:45Speaker 10: Why do you need to like.
- 52:47Speaker 7: Pull the wool over its eyes. It's not going to know.
- 52:50Speaker 5: It doesn't even acknowledge that you exist. It doesn't care
- 52:52Speaker 5: about the TNT.
- 52:53Speaker 10: Yeah, it's not really going to notice that you casually
- 52:56Speaker 10: threw a little straw over top of this wool that
- 52:59Speaker 10: you just dug.
- 53:00Speaker 7: It's a fireball from space.
- 53:02Speaker 5: And he puts the rocks in a nice, neat little circle.
- 53:04Speaker 10: And they crawl away.
- 53:05Speaker 5: And they crawl away, and he puts them back. And
- 53:07Speaker 5: they crawl away, and he puts them back.
- 53:08Speaker 10: You'd think if they could burn him, wouldn't they just
- 53:10Speaker 10: burn his hand when he picked him back up?
- 53:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:12Speaker 7: If you pissed them off.
- 53:13Speaker 10: Because that's what we realize is these rocks and the
- 53:16Speaker 10: fireball are like emotional creatures, and you can piss them off,
- 53:20Speaker 10: or sometimes they're just in a bad mood, or they
- 53:23Speaker 10: go into these weird descriptions about the rocks, and then
- 53:25Speaker 10: I guess, again, about the giant entity there that... sometimes
- 53:28Speaker 10: it'll just let you slide sometimes it'll just be like
- 53:31Speaker 10: i don't feel like killing that bastard right now and
- 53:34Speaker 10: then other times you'll just barely you know light your
- 53:37Speaker 10: pipe on it and you'll light a match off of
- 53:39Speaker 10: it and that semen got burnt yeah which they kept
- 53:43Speaker 10: using terms semen he was a semen.
- 53:46Speaker 5: And he well we all did but once again we're
- 53:51Speaker 5: like six years old He's a demon.
- 53:54Speaker 10: So, yeah, there's a longshoreman that gets taken out midway through. And, yeah,
- 53:58Speaker 10: that's all he did was he lit a match on
- 54:00Speaker 10: that rock. That pissed it off. And then here comes
- 54:03Speaker 10: Mama and just torches his ass.
- 54:06Speaker 5: Didn't appear until she was ten feet away, even though
- 54:09Speaker 5: she was there. I think she was hiding behind a tree.
- 54:11Speaker 10: She was hiding behind a tree, yeah. You should have
- 54:13Speaker 10: noticed that that tree was on fire because it's hard
- 54:16Speaker 10: to hide by the tree when you're a giant fireball.
- 54:18Speaker 5: And then they would cut, when she was coming up
- 54:20Speaker 5: out of the water, they would cut back and forth
- 54:22Speaker 5: the scenes of a volcano. That was smoldering, and I'm like,
- 54:25Speaker 5: you're either in the northeast or northern California by your geography.
- 54:31Speaker 5: There are no large, smoldering, conical volcanoes anywhere near there.
- 54:38Speaker 5: But they're in there.
- 54:39Speaker 10: Well, I mean, if we want to call that out,
- 54:40Speaker 10: they also just randomly cut the scenes in space in
- 54:43Speaker 10: the middle of it. They're like looking up at the sky,
- 54:45Speaker 10: and then all of a sudden it cuts the shots
- 54:47Speaker 10: from like 10 billion miles away that... A nebula you
- 54:50Speaker 10: could never possibly look up in the sky and just see.
- 54:53Speaker 10: You know, they've got the biggest, you know, space telescope
- 54:57Speaker 10: mounted on a satellite somewhere that got this shot. And
- 55:00Speaker 10: suddenly he looks up in the sky and it's like
- 55:02Speaker 10: it's parked next to the moon. So, yeah, I mean,
- 55:05Speaker 10: they insert a lot of weird scientific little shots. Even
- 55:08Speaker 10: in the credits early on, what was some of that stuff?
- 55:11Speaker 10: It was just, like, random footage of some sort of
- 55:13Speaker 10: scientific something or other.
- 55:15Speaker 7: They don't even, like, call out what it is.
- 55:17Speaker 10: It's just images of weird blobby things on the screen,
- 55:20Speaker 10: and you're like, ooh, science. So it works. That's all
- 55:24Speaker 10: you need in a science fiction movie.
- 55:25Speaker 5: That's all you need.
- 55:26Speaker 10: Science.
- 55:26Speaker 5: It was fantastic.
- 55:28Speaker 10: Truly amazing. Oh, so is that how we want to
- 55:33Speaker 10: go out on a date? Fantastic.
- 55:36Speaker 7: Utterly amazing.
- 55:37Speaker 5: Yeah, we blew it up. I mean, what else are
- 55:38Speaker 5: you going to do? You can blow up TNT and
- 55:40Speaker 5: be 10 feet from it. A ball of flame can
- 55:44Speaker 5: blow up, but you're fine. Well, she was fine because
- 55:47Speaker 5: he laid on top of her.
- 55:48Speaker 16: Right.
- 55:48Speaker 5: Laid on top of her.
- 55:49Speaker 9: He protected her with his love.
- 55:52Speaker 7: With his madness.
- 55:53Speaker 5: Squeezed his back.
- 55:55Speaker 7: While we're down here, don't you squeeze. so i.
- 56:01Speaker 9: Can't even explain it she can't be a masseuse that's for.
- 56:05Speaker 10: Sure so yeah then then i mean it does that
- 56:09Speaker 10: wrap up in like all of two minutes i mean
- 56:10Speaker 10: it's it blows it up then we see random shots
- 56:13Speaker 10: of space again and then it zooms back into planet
- 56:16Speaker 10: earth i guess and then it's them like well too
- 56:19Speaker 10: bad we couldn't learn anything from it instead.
- 56:21Speaker 19: We just got to blow it up and then that
- 56:23Speaker 19: was pretty much how they wrapped it up and credit
- 56:25Speaker 19: have a curse So it's a shame that, you know,
- 56:29Speaker 19: we can't have contact with other beings and have communication
- 56:33Speaker 19: and have some sort of intelligent interaction.
- 56:35Speaker 7: No, we just have to blow them up.
- 56:37Speaker 10: So years before ID4 came along, we realized you just
- 56:42Speaker 10: have to blow it up to aliens. That's all there
- 56:44Speaker 10: is to it.
- 56:44Speaker 5: And speaking of ID4, Jeff Goldblum was in it.
- 56:48Speaker 7: That's true.
- 56:48Speaker 10: We forgot to mention.
- 56:50Speaker 7: The lead actor here.
- 56:52Speaker 10: Let's see. He's Marvin Howard. who I believe this was
- 56:57Speaker 10: his first movie, and I believe this was his last movie.
- 57:02Speaker 7: I'm not making that up.
- 57:03Speaker 9: He really wasn't that bad in it.
- 57:04Speaker 7: I mean, his acting wasn't... He wasn't that good, either.
- 57:07Speaker 9: I mean, he wasn't that great, but he wasn't, like,
- 57:09Speaker 9: the worst actor ever.
- 57:10Speaker 10: Yeah, he has a one credit in 1980 from the
- 57:14Speaker 10: TV series Gunmen. And, yeah, other than that, his theatrical
- 57:19Speaker 10: run was The Cremators.
- 57:22Speaker 7: That was his acting career.
- 57:24Speaker 5: Once you start out on top, why do anything else?
- 57:26Speaker 7: That's right.
- 57:26Speaker 10: I mean, when you're the biggest actor ever in the
- 57:29Speaker 10: biggest movie ever, The Cremators, there's nothing but downhill after that.
- 57:33Speaker 7: You just wrap it up.
- 57:36Speaker 10: Speaking of which, okay, I guess we will wrap up
- 57:39Speaker 10: our take on The Cremators. All right, so we will
- 57:43Speaker 10: take a break and be back with the rest of
- 57:45Speaker 10: the show.
- 57:48Speaker 7: And I've got crab in my underpants.
- 57:51Speaker 3: And it keep me dancing.
- 57:54Speaker 14: Fire, fire, fire, fire.
- 58:03Speaker 3: Fire, fire, fire, fire.
- 58:05Speaker 12: Commission time.
- 58:06Speaker 1: If leaving, please replace your inner car speaker before releasing
- 58:11Speaker 1: brakes or starting motor. Do not back out. Drive to
- 58:15Speaker 1: the aisle in front of you and exit. And now,
- 58:19Speaker 1: for those remaining.
- 58:21Speaker 12: There is nothing new under the sun. But under the small,
- 58:26Speaker 12: green fourth moon of Yavin, there is quite a different story.
- 58:38Speaker 12: Director George Lucas and 20th Century Fox present Star Wars.
- 58:46Speaker 18: Hi, this is famous Hollywood producer Robert Evans. You know,
- 58:50Speaker 18: I've made a lot of powerful enemies during my time
- 58:52Speaker 18: in Hollywood, like the time I pushed Steve McQueen in
- 58:55Speaker 18: front of a moving car on the set of The
- 58:57Speaker 18: Getaway because he was macking on my lady, Allie McGraw.
- 59:01Speaker 18: But I've made one great friend, a boffo friend if
- 59:05Speaker 18: you will.
- 59:05Speaker 5: Since I retired.
- 59:07Speaker 20: It's called Show Show, and it's the best fucking movie
- 59:10Speaker 20: podcast ever. It's even better than cocaine, which I would
- 59:15Speaker 20: know a lot about.
- 59:18Speaker 18: Visit Show Show at showshow.podomatic.com or search Show Show, all
- 59:22Speaker 18: one word, in the iTunes store.
- 59:26Speaker 11: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 59:28Speaker 12: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 59:29Speaker 7: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 59:32Speaker 1: And now, on with the show. Pieces of shattered planets.
- 59:35Speaker 3: Pregnancy of space debris. Atomic power.
- 1:00:22Speaker 10: And are you ready for feedback? Sure.
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: Greg, go ahead.
- 1:00:27Speaker 10: You're usually the feedback. Let's go.
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: I didn't get to listen to the last week's show.
- 1:00:36Speaker 10: About a third of the time it's you anyway. So,
- 1:00:38Speaker 10: you know, it makes it more difficult when you're sitting here.
- 1:00:40Speaker 10: It's really hard to.
- 1:00:43Speaker 10: So the rest of you are slacking that was pretty
- 1:00:45Speaker 10: much it this week so no one uh we're still
- 1:00:48Speaker 10: waiting that's the thing well the last part of that
- 1:00:51Speaker 10: episode just got out so i'm assuming that's your excuse
- 1:00:54Speaker 10: slackers but otherwise we're still waiting for our grito impersonations
- 1:00:59Speaker 10: that is our uh our new if you want to

- 1:01:10Speaker 7: So, yeah, if.
- 1:01:11Speaker 10: You want to win the whole gift pack, you have
- 1:01:14Speaker 10: to call in to the hotline number there and give
- 1:01:16Speaker 10: us your best Greedo impersonation.
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: Do you want to do one now?
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: No.
- 1:01:21Speaker 10: I can never get anybody to do one now. So, yeah,
- 1:01:26Speaker 10: get on the phone, or if you don't want to
- 1:01:28Speaker 10: do it, the phone method. You've got a computer. More
- 1:01:31Speaker 10: than likely you know how to record stuff yourself. Record

- 1:02:17Speaker 4: the forum sections and look for Movie Meltdown.
- 1:02:24Speaker 10: Alright, as for the announcements here, just reminding you that
- 1:02:31Speaker 10: we will be at the Fright Night Film Fest in
- 1:02:33Speaker 10: just a couple of weeks. So, we threw up the interview...
- 1:02:38Speaker 10: earlier this past week. And, uh, we we've got all
- 1:02:40Speaker 10: the details on what's going to go down and, and
- 1:02:42Speaker 10: how much is going to be taking place at Fright
- 1:02:45Speaker 10: Night in the next couple of years. It's, it's probably
- 1:02:47Speaker 10: just going to get massively bigger as time goes on.
- 1:02:50Speaker 10: And it's already pretty huge based on last year. It was,
- 1:02:54Speaker 10: it was a huge turnout, a lot of really cool
- 1:02:56Speaker 10: stuff going on. So if you needed any more incentive,
- 1:03:00Speaker 10: we're going to be there. I mean, what more do
- 1:03:01Speaker 10: you need? Or at least I am, I'm trying to
- 1:03:03Speaker 10: decide who I'm going to drag there at this point, but, um, Yes,
- 1:03:07Speaker 10: we'll be there recording segments live from the show. So
- 1:03:10Speaker 10: if you're lucky, you can come by and I'll make
- 1:03:12Speaker 10: you sit down at the table and start talking. So, yeah,
- 1:03:14Speaker 10: come by. Join in on the geekery. Again, it is
- 1:03:17Speaker 10: July 30th through August 1st. And go to FrightNightFilmFest.com for
- 1:03:22Speaker 10: the rest of the info.
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: Okay, kids, get out your decoder pins.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: Dun, dun, dun.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: Yeah, let's go sing.
- 1:03:28Speaker 11: Sorry.
- 1:03:29Speaker 7: Somebody's got to do it.
- 1:03:31Speaker 11: Sorry.
- 1:03:31Speaker 10: Somebody make some sort of noise.
- 1:03:33Speaker 6: I did.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: I said dun, dun, dun.
- 1:03:35Speaker 9: Did you not hear it? I said it.
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: I know, but we need more of a fanfare.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I could tell that tonight's message was really important.
- 1:03:43Speaker 10: All right, it is time for the movie meltdown secret
- 1:03:45Speaker 10: circle reveal of the next two features.
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: Two features.
- 1:03:51Speaker 10: Thank you, Roger.
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: It's like the episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
- 1:03:59Speaker 6: where Frank thinks that Charlie's dead so he just carries
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: around this mannequin.
- 1:04:04Speaker 9: And he has Charlie's lightning.
- 1:04:07Speaker 11: Unicorn t-shirt on and he talks in a Charlie voice.
- 1:04:11Speaker 9: You're going to do that with Roger.
- 1:04:13Speaker 7: Is this any different from Weekend at Bernie's?
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: No, Weekend at Bernie's.
- 1:04:17Speaker 10: One of the finest films ever made.
- 1:04:18Speaker 9: That was a really good movie.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:04:21Speaker 9: I really want to watch that again.
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: But not next week.
- 1:04:24Speaker 10: Because next week we're rounding out the third part in
- 1:04:27Speaker 10: this trilogy of terror. Next week is Wonder Women.
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: Can I come?
- 1:04:34Speaker 10: Please come back and join us. I know nothing about
- 1:04:38Speaker 10: Wonder Woman. It's a lot more action than this one,
- 1:04:42Speaker 10: so you might be okay with it. There's people getting
- 1:04:44Speaker 10: kicked in the head and all kinds of fun stuff.
- 1:04:47Speaker 10: I believe it's on an island. We'll have to find
- 1:04:49Speaker 10: out next week. Tune in next week for Wonder Woman.
- 1:04:52Speaker 10: Go out and find yourself a copy. They're a little
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: harder to come by than these others. I'm not telling
- 1:04:58Speaker 10: you to do anything, you know, unscrupulous, but yeah, get
- 1:05:02Speaker 10: yourself a copy in whatever means you feel is appropriate.
- 1:05:06Speaker 10: The following week, I believe I've indulged my own sick
- 1:05:10Speaker 10: fantasies for the last three weeks and made you guys
- 1:05:12Speaker 10: watch these special, special movies, so I thought we would
- 1:05:16Speaker 10: return to a somewhat normal movie and one that somebody else.
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: Actually wanted to watch.
- 1:05:21Speaker 10: Misty brought over a copy of All the Boys Love
- 1:05:23Speaker 10: Mandy Lane, which she mentioned watching a few weeks back
- 1:05:26Speaker 10: and has some different thoughts on it that we should
- 1:05:28Speaker 10: go into. So I think the following week we will
- 1:05:31Speaker 10: watch All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: Fantastic.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: What?
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: Fantastic.
- 1:05:37Speaker 10: You can come watch that one, too.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:05:40Speaker 10: Anything else we need to round out this episode?
- 1:05:43Speaker 9: Not that I know of.
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: That's usually the end.
- 1:05:46Speaker 10: That's pretty much it, so... Otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:05:49Speaker 10: We will return next week. Same geek time, same geek feed.
- 1:05:52Speaker 10: Thanks for listening. Thank you.
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 1:05:55Speaker 14: Scarlet hover in my head Pretty and red Pretty.
- 1:06:05Speaker 19: And red.
- 1:06:09Speaker 14: Flowers flying in their bed Oh yeah Why.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: Is everyone crying?
- 1:06:23Speaker 8: Look up children, look and.
- 1:06:26Speaker 14: See Shining down on you and me, yeah And the
- 1:06:30Speaker 14: ball of fire in the sky, yeah Keeps watching over
- 1:06:44Speaker 14: you and I way up high. And the ball of
- 1:06:50Speaker 14: fire in the sky. Keeps watching over you and I
- 1:06:58Speaker 14: way up high. And now the towers are falling.
- 1:07:13Speaker 10: Tumbling down, tumbling down. Oh, can't you hear the angels calling?
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah. Listen.
- 1:07:39Speaker 14: Shining through eternity As it was, so it shall be
- 1:07:45Speaker 14: And the bonfire in the sky Keeps watching over you
- 1:07:54Speaker 14: and I, you and I And the bonfire in the
- 1:08:04Speaker 14: sky Keeps watching over you and I, you and I
- 1:08:27Speaker 14: Keeps on watching over you and I You and I
- 1:08:35Speaker 14: And the bonfire in the sky Keeps.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: On watching over you and I.
- 1:08:52Speaker 9: You mean that piece of whatever it is can think?
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: This show is a production of Movie Meltdown, produced and
