- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody. It's
- 0:15Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher and it's Adam Kaplan and it's May. Welcome
- 0:18Speaker 1: to May. We are past the NFL Draft. Adam and
- 0:20Speaker 1: I like to do every year a depth chart podcast series.
- 0:25Speaker 1: We usually divided up offense defense, but we both talked
- 0:28Speaker 1: and we thought it would be better if we did
- 0:31Speaker 1: this as a series and we really went inside each
- 0:34Speaker 1: position a little more. I mean, there's a lot of
- 0:37Speaker 1: change going on with the Eagles roster right now and
- 0:39Speaker 1: they've got a lot of guys, and Adam and I
- 0:41Speaker 1: just thought it would be a great as Adam's idea,
- 0:43Speaker 1: great idea to really separate it by position and not
- 0:46Speaker 1: just more two pods, so that we can go deep
- 0:49Speaker 1: inside each position. So we're gonna start off this pod
- 0:52Speaker 1: series with this podcast being about the quarterback and it's
- 0:56Speaker 1: a really Adam, this is the most interesting. It's puzzling.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I'll even say quarterback depth chart that you're gonna see
- 1:06Speaker 1: in the league. Because you have Jillen Hurts, that's fine
- 1:09Speaker 1: as your starter will get it to him in his
- 1:11Speaker 1: contract situation. Then you have a backup in Tanner McKee.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Then you have a number three quarterback who's played in
- 1:18Speaker 1: this league for fifteen years, has been to the playoffs,
- 1:20Speaker 1: has been to the Pro Bowl. Not your typical number three.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And then, of course your developmental number four with the
- 1:26Speaker 1: rookie Cole Payton, who himself has a lot of interesting
- 1:30Speaker 1: I guess an interesting future and team saw him differently.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So it's a very unique looking dep chart to say
- 1:37Speaker 1: the least.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, they've got four quarterbacks, You've got revised offensive
- 1:42Speaker 2: coaching staff, You've got a new play caller, you got
- 1:45Speaker 2: a new passing game coordinator, you got a new tight
- 1:48Speaker 2: ends coach, you got a new run game coordinator. Yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and the quarterbacks coach, Park Fraser was on the staff.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But you have to really search to see where he's
- 1:57Speaker 2: developed quarterbacks before. Yeah, and they've got a ob to
- 2:00Speaker 2: do here. You got to get the quarterback back now
- 2:02Speaker 2: only back on track, but he's got to learn a
- 2:05Speaker 2: yet another new offense with new coaches. A lot of
- 2:09Speaker 2: them knew other than Parks Frasier, And it's it's this
- 2:13Speaker 2: thing could go variety of ways. You know, they're they're
- 2:15Speaker 2: running an offense that you know some people say this
- 2:18Speaker 2: will never work. With Jalen Hurts, I'm a little bit
- 2:20Speaker 2: to the contrary with it. To me, I think it's
- 2:24Speaker 2: he knows what's coming. He's aware of what it's going
- 2:27Speaker 2: to be, and it will never work unless he throws
- 2:28Speaker 2: the ball in time, particularly over the middle. There's a
- 2:32Speaker 2: reason why they drafted McKay lemon.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the same reason the Steelers want to Kae Lemon.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They wanted it inside receivers. I was told at the
- 2:39Speaker 2: time what they saw and that's what Mike McCarthy wanted
- 2:42Speaker 2: West Coast offense. You need a slot.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So there's it's gonna be different. As you said, you
- 2:47Speaker 2: set this up. I'm fascinated to see what the training
- 2:51Speaker 2: Kip looks like with all these guys called Payton is Is
- 2:53Speaker 2: he how you're gonna get him reps? He said, with
- 2:56Speaker 2: four string quarterbacks don't get reps.
- 2:58Speaker 1: This is a great conversation.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah, this is this is just like the craziness of this.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I understand like he brings it a very unique skill set.
- 3:08Speaker 2: He's a big time athlete. Once he had told me
- 3:10Speaker 2: that that he hasn't played fullback before. They actually thought
- 3:14Speaker 2: because of his size and he can move, but he
- 3:17Speaker 2: doesn't throw the ball very well that maybe he should
- 3:19Speaker 2: be a fullback.
- 3:21Speaker 1: A fullback.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, yeah, Just as we often do, we try
- 3:26Speaker 2: to get information from other clubs how they solve what
- 3:30Speaker 2: we do is the Eagles draft class here, and how do
- 3:34Speaker 2: you see this player? Oh well, you might find this interesting.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We didn't really see him as a quarterback. Okay, tight end,
- 3:40Speaker 2: he goes no fullback? I was like, but how do
- 3:43Speaker 2: you see this? He's like, he's very athletic, he can move.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We all teach him out block. He's big as hell
- 3:48Speaker 2: into thirty plus. Okay, but that doesn't that doesn't really
- 3:54Speaker 2: take care unless he's Larry Centers, you know, unless he's
- 3:57Speaker 2: gonna catch a hundred balls. What's the point? You know?
- 4:00Speaker 2: I don't know. That seems dubious to me, but it
- 4:02Speaker 2: just tells you that teams are split on what cal
- 4:05Speaker 2: Payton is at the next level. Eagle seem as a quarterback,
- 4:08Speaker 2: but how how will be deployed? Right trying camp will
- 4:11Speaker 2: give his clues.
- 4:12Speaker 1: By the way, Larry's centers is a great pull. I
- 4:15Speaker 1: had forgotten about the great pass catching fullback Larry's centers.
- 4:18Speaker 1: That's a good one.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Mada three or four years at the Super Bowl, we
- 4:21Speaker 2: had an awesome talking. He said, I totally forgot that
- 4:24Speaker 2: he played for Belichick. Oh yeah, yeah, Patriots were his
- 4:28Speaker 2: last team. Uh huh. He just was captain checkdown. That's
- 4:31Speaker 2: what I called. I was. It's ridiculous, unbelievable hit the
- 4:34Speaker 2: neck role maybe a little bit there. Yeah, for a
- 4:36Speaker 2: bunch of teams. A really good dude and I hell
- 4:39Speaker 2: of a football player. And for fantasy that was the
- 4:42Speaker 2: big thing. Like he in PPR leagues where you get
- 4:45Speaker 2: a point perception, he was gold fullback. Was actually a
- 4:50Speaker 2: thot than Mike Alstott Worth drafting.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, how about that? You know, I remember when Terrell
- 4:54Speaker 1: Prior moved to wide receiver right and he became a
- 4:57Speaker 1: thousand yard off receiver because of his athleticism, and then
- 5:01Speaker 1: he went foolishly. I think it was the it was
- 5:04Speaker 1: Washington that signed him into a big free agent deal
- 5:06Speaker 1: and then he only had like two hundred and fifty yards,
- 5:07Speaker 1: But he did show that he could make that move
- 5:10Speaker 1: and use that athleticism. I'm I am fascinated to see
- 5:13Speaker 1: how the Eagles use Cole Payton if they can correct
- 5:16Speaker 1: all the mechanical issues that he came out of college
- 5:19Speaker 1: with and eventually build him into a backup or if
- 5:22Speaker 1: he just becomes kind of a multi dimensional weapon like player.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Did we mention how the Eagles have been looking for
- 5:28Speaker 1: this kind of guy in various positions in a recent time.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It started with pen Van Schumer and it continued with
- 5:34Speaker 1: a guy who never even made the team. Do you
- 5:36Speaker 1: remember how much they talked up Avery Williams? Do you
- 5:39Speaker 1: remember Nick syari all the of all the free agency
- 5:42Speaker 1: signed last year, Nick Sirianni couldn't wait to talk about
- 5:44Speaker 1: Avery Williams, the running back who had also played cornerback,
- 5:47Speaker 1: who was also a dangerous returner, and he got hurt
- 5:51Speaker 1: OTAs and then he just came to training camp and
- 5:53Speaker 1: he was just.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Did I get overly excited when he spoke the owner
- 5:57Speaker 2: speanings That got duped totally. I was looking for this
- 5:59Speaker 2: training camp. Yeah, so do you remember me? You and
- 6:02Speaker 2: Andrew are exchanging notes. You're like, I'm really not seeing it, Like, okay,
- 6:05Speaker 2: maybe they're just not showing it. They're gonna have to
- 6:07Speaker 2: show it and train to Kip at some point if
- 6:08Speaker 2: he's gonna be a roster. Right, you never saw it.
- 6:11Speaker 2: He got cut. I think the Jets brought him in
- 6:14Speaker 2: and that's it. He's had a football so that he.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Was on every fifty three man roster project like early
- 6:20Speaker 1: three man roster projection because of the way Nick Sirianni
- 6:23Speaker 1: talked about him. And I don't think Nick Sirianni was
- 6:25Speaker 1: trying to do purport. I think Nick Sirianni thought this
- 6:28Speaker 1: guy was going to be.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Didn't do it, get the job done. He doesn't stand around.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It's just it wasn't like a lot of money that
- 6:35Speaker 2: they owed him, so it but it shows you on
- 6:38Speaker 2: your point that gadget player, something non traditional. Yeah, something
- 6:42Speaker 2: that's out of the norm, right, could be possible going
- 6:45Speaker 2: forward here.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Right, You mentioned reps fur quarterbacks, and I think that
- 6:49Speaker 1: that's going to be a big part of the discussion
- 6:50Speaker 1: we're going to have about this depth dark position, because
- 6:53Speaker 1: sometimes you look at something and you don't understand how
- 6:56Speaker 1: the pieces are going to fit, knowing what you know
- 6:58Speaker 1: about a practice in the NFL, the way coaches think,
- 7:02Speaker 1: the way players think, the way a team prepares, and
- 7:04Speaker 1: once we get past Jalen Hurts in a second, I
- 7:07Speaker 1: think that reps question is going to become very very
- 7:09Speaker 1: interesting for the rest of the QBS. But let's start
- 7:12Speaker 1: with Jalen, you mentioned the change that they are undergoing offensively,
- 7:17Speaker 1: this is the most drastic change the Eagles will have
- 7:21Speaker 1: made among all of their changes. We felt that the
- 7:24Speaker 1: Kellen Moore changed a couple of years ago was going
- 7:27Speaker 1: to bring in a new offense. It was sort of
- 7:29Speaker 1: like that for a few weeks. More motion, a couple
- 7:32Speaker 1: of different things spread offense, but it really was still
- 7:35Speaker 1: it became the Eagles offense that we had known, and
- 7:40Speaker 1: they definitely tried to keep the Eagles offense with Kevin Patullo.
- 7:44Speaker 1: They had the Eagles offense with Shane Steikin's offense was
- 7:47Speaker 1: RPO heavy. The league caught up to that. I mean,
- 7:49Speaker 1: it really worked well at the time. But Adam, this one,
- 7:53Speaker 1: as you've just mentioned, we're not going to have a
- 7:55Speaker 1: conversation like, yes, it's a new coordinator, but it's the
- 7:58Speaker 1: same offense, no different offense, different personnel that's gonna be
- 8:02Speaker 1: in charge, and we're gonna find out if Jalen Hurts
- 8:06Speaker 1: likes this offense and will operate it the way it's
- 8:08Speaker 1: supposed to be, because he is famous for that quote
- 8:11Speaker 1: of saying the offense will look the way I want
- 8:13Speaker 1: it to look, and I don't think that that's going
- 8:15Speaker 1: to be the case anymore. But he has a chance
- 8:19Speaker 1: to really adapt to this offense and really add to
- 8:21Speaker 1: himself his legacy as a quarterback. And I think if
- 8:25Speaker 1: he does want to pull the trigger more because we
- 8:28Speaker 1: know he's accurate, if he does, it can be great
- 8:32Speaker 1: for his career. I'm not a doubter. I just want
- 8:35Speaker 1: to see how it goes.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I know there. I mean, we've had these conversations with
- 8:39Speaker 2: people in the league. Like most people that we've spoke
- 8:41Speaker 2: with don't think it's gonna work because he hasn't shown
- 8:43Speaker 2: the ability to throw consistently over the middle, throw a
- 8:45Speaker 2: great time and consistently.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but he has done it, yep.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And when you've done something before, it doesn't mean you
- 8:51Speaker 2: can't do it. There's you know, there's another guy. There's
- 8:55Speaker 2: a new guy in his here, you know, with the
- 8:58Speaker 2: new offense coordinator, Sean Mannion. He Manion only knows the
- 9:01Speaker 2: West Coast offense. For those saying well, they could just
- 9:04Speaker 2: scale back, like Kellen Moore did, Oh really, what's he
- 9:07Speaker 2: scaling back to? What other offense? Does? You know? What
- 9:10Speaker 2: are you scaling to? It's easy to say, but like
- 9:13Speaker 2: Kellen Moore. As he would say when he was interviewed
- 9:18Speaker 2: over the years, he had two or three different ideas
- 9:24Speaker 2: in his head of what it should his offense should
- 9:26Speaker 2: look like. Because of the people who work with Scott
- 9:27Speaker 2: Lenihan going back to college at Boise State, that and
- 9:32Speaker 2: other people he's worked with here, it's the West Coast offense. Like,
- 9:35Speaker 2: you're not going to a North turner offense, non traditional,
- 9:38Speaker 2: You're not going to the verbage system. Excuse me, the
- 9:41Speaker 2: number system. You're not doing that. So it's either it's
- 9:45Speaker 2: either going to work or you get to Tanner McKee,
- 9:48Speaker 2: who's the number two. Now, let me throw this scenario
- 9:51Speaker 2: at you. They're one in five, Okay, still time left,
- 9:55Speaker 2: Still time left to turn the season around. One in
- 9:58Speaker 2: five defense is playing well, Barkley's not the problem that
- 10:02Speaker 2: the run blocking, which is atrocious last season is actually good.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Past blocking which was good last year, still good. But
- 10:09Speaker 2: it's very clear that Hurts cannot get the system down.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Would it surprise anyone that if they went to McKay.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I mean at one in five, No, that wouldn't surprise me.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I do think that it's more likely. Well, first of all,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I think it's tough under the set of context you
- 10:27Speaker 1: gave me. If the Eagles are run blocking pretty well
- 10:30Speaker 1: and playing good defense, it's pretty it'll be very hard
- 10:32Speaker 1: to be one in five because that would be two
- 10:34Speaker 1: thirds of their operation are doing really well. But to
- 10:36Speaker 1: your point, I do think the only thing that would
- 10:40Speaker 1: lead to Jalen Hurts getting benched if it was a
- 10:42Speaker 1: major slide like that, if there were four games under
- 10:44Speaker 1: five hundred, or if they were getting close to some
- 10:46Speaker 1: kind of mathematical elimination and the season was really slipping away.
- 10:52Speaker 1: You're in mid October, late October, early November, and you're
- 10:55Speaker 1: on a four game losing streak and the offense just
- 10:58Speaker 1: isn't doing what it's supposed to do. Yeah, I mean
- 11:00Speaker 1: I think that that scenario could be on the table.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I don't think it'll happen because even when he's you know,
- 11:08Speaker 1: Janden Hurts is sort of that mystery wrapped in enigma.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Even when he's struggling, then he goes and has like
- 11:13Speaker 1: two great games, right, I mean, he always figures out. Yeah,
- 11:19Speaker 1: he's he's a survivor. I give him a lot of
- 11:21Speaker 1: a lot of credit for that. So I get it
- 11:24Speaker 1: that it catches up with everybody at some point did
- 11:26Speaker 1: for Donovan, it does for it did for Carson. It
- 11:28Speaker 1: catches up. But I don't I don't see that happening
- 11:30Speaker 1: just yet. I do think the question more so is
- 11:33Speaker 1: what happens if he's just okay though, Like, if he's okay,
- 11:38Speaker 1: the team's doing all right, not great, not terrible, But
- 11:42Speaker 1: then you're paying a lot of money for someone to
- 11:45Speaker 1: just be an okay quarterback. So there's a lot to
- 11:47Speaker 1: see here with how he plays.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, now let's let's get to this is important. This
- 11:51Speaker 2: next part hurts his contract, right m hm. Well, he's
- 11:55Speaker 2: signed through twenty twenty eight. All the cash this season
- 12:01Speaker 2: is fully guaranteed, fifty one point five million, so that's
- 12:05Speaker 2: you know, he's going to get his money. He's a
- 12:07Speaker 2: started quarterback. Yeah, next year is when he's going to
- 12:11Speaker 2: want a new deal because only of the fifty one
- 12:16Speaker 2: point five million to do with twenty seven, only twenty
- 12:18Speaker 2: two millions fully guaranteed. It's the last year of any
- 12:21Speaker 2: guaranteed money. And that's not a lot. Not that they
- 12:23Speaker 2: would cut him obviously, not for a quarterback, right, Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 2: you're not cutting a quarterback. You would trade him if
- 12:27Speaker 2: you weren't happy and by the way, there there would
- 12:30Speaker 2: be suitors for him. Sure. I've had this conversation with
- 12:33Speaker 2: personal people, like there he's a young quarterback who's won
- 12:36Speaker 2: a lot of games, and there are theories of why
- 12:40Speaker 2: he struggled the last three years, up very up, and down,
- 12:44Speaker 2: more down then up in the passing game. There's the
- 12:47Speaker 2: randomness of the success, like why can't he play consistently
- 12:49Speaker 2: good football? A lot of theories. We've discussed a lot
- 12:52Speaker 2: of them. Too many coordinators, too many different people in
- 12:55Speaker 2: his ear. It's going to happen again this year. But
- 12:57Speaker 2: whatever the case is, it just say has not been
- 12:59Speaker 2: good enough. It started twenty three. We outline. It's not
- 13:03Speaker 2: an opinion. It's as grec O Sel says, it's tape based.
- 13:05Speaker 2: It's all tape based. It's what the tap shows. Like
- 13:08Speaker 2: you can't argue with tape. You could give theories, you
- 13:10Speaker 2: could give contacts. Okay, well why is this happening? You
- 13:14Speaker 2: can have some theories, but the tape is the tape. Right,
- 13:16Speaker 2: So if he plays well, I mean, if I'm hurts,
- 13:21Speaker 2: if it's very clear that he had a good season,
- 13:24Speaker 2: if I'm him, I want a new deal. I'm not
- 13:26Speaker 2: playing for fifty one to five with all the Wednesday
- 13:29Speaker 2: he's gotten and if he's there's a saying in personnel,
- 13:33Speaker 2: are you part of the reason why? Right? Are you
- 13:37Speaker 2: the reason? Why? Are we winning because of you? Of you?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Or winning with you?
- 13:42Speaker 2: Right? Yeah? With you right right? And that's actually these
- 13:46Speaker 2: are real conversations that personnel people have.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Yep.
- 13:48Speaker 2: But if it's very clear they're winning because of him,
- 13:50Speaker 2: like in twenty two, they won't because of him. There's
- 13:53Speaker 2: no argument he was great man. The league just did
- 13:55Speaker 2: all sorts of things have happened. But moving this forward
- 13:58Speaker 2: to twenty seven, I just there's not enough guaranteed money.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I'd want a new deal if I'm him, and I'm
- 14:04Speaker 2: sure he will yeah, if he plays well, if it
- 14:07Speaker 2: you never have to guess if the guy, if if
- 14:10Speaker 2: the guy, if it's worth playing paying a guy that
- 14:12Speaker 2: the tape tells you how the guy's playing. Agreed, We're
- 14:15Speaker 2: gonna learn a lot. As you said to set this up.
- 14:18Speaker 2: This is a fascinating situation with Hurtz McKee, by the way,
- 14:21Speaker 2: on the last year of his rookie deal.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Mm hmmm.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Uh. The word around the league is if if Eagles
- 14:27Speaker 2: would entertain and he talks with other clubs. It's going
- 14:29Speaker 2: to be a premium pick, very good pick. But talk
- 14:33Speaker 2: about a great salary to have if you're the Eagles
- 14:35Speaker 2: for a backup quarterback one point one for five million.
- 14:38Speaker 2: It's the cash that's beautiful. Fact the third string quarterback
- 14:42Speaker 2: Andy Dalton, well from the Eagles, he's gonna make one
- 14:45Speaker 2: point five million because the Panthers and Eagles are split
- 14:48Speaker 2: in the cash. Panthers are, I believe we're paying two
- 14:50Speaker 2: point five million. Eagles are paying only one point five million.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Remember at the trade we said, this is no way
- 14:55Speaker 2: they're they're gonna pay four million to be a third
- 14:57Speaker 2: string quarterback. Right where there you go. That's that's what
- 14:59Speaker 2: we were told. That's what the breakdown is.
- 15:01Speaker 1: So okay, So financially, financially, this is where I'm really fascinated.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Financially because the Panthers, as you just said, are spotting
- 15:09Speaker 1: half the bill. It's not maybe the most crippling salary
- 15:14Speaker 1: for number three quarterback, especially when you're number two is
- 15:16Speaker 1: still on a rookie deal. Right. But from a practice
- 15:19Speaker 1: rep standpoint, now you're talking about we have this outlined
- 15:23Speaker 1: what an NFL practice looks like during the season quite
- 15:25Speaker 1: a bit your starting quarterback gets like ninety percent of
- 15:29Speaker 1: the reps. Okay, Your backup quarterback, which in this case
- 15:32Speaker 1: would be Tanner McKey, gets about ten percent of the reps.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Unless there's any way, any, if any, thank you any
- 15:39Speaker 1: that's true. Okay, So if that would be the case,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you're talking about Jalen Hurt's getting almost all the reps,
- 15:44Speaker 1: Tanner m keey getting what there's left. Usually your third
- 15:47Speaker 1: string guy is a developmental guy and runs the scout team,
- 15:51Speaker 1: which is what you would probably want from Nicole Payton.
- 15:54Speaker 1: But you have a guy and Andy Dalton who is
- 15:59Speaker 1: never been a number three, right. He is fifteen I'm sorry, seventeen, No,
- 16:03Speaker 1: fifteen years into his career. He's been to three Pro Bowls,
- 16:07Speaker 1: he's played in four playoff games, although he hasn't won
- 16:09Speaker 1: any of them. And he is going to be a
- 16:11Speaker 1: guy running the scout team. That makes very little sense
- 16:15Speaker 1: to me. And on top of that, I'd love to
- 16:19Speaker 1: just have a conversation with him and shoot him up
- 16:20Speaker 1: with some truth serum and say, how do you feel
- 16:22Speaker 1: about that being the scout team quarterback at this stage
- 16:25Speaker 1: of your career. I mean, it's a very high paid one,
- 16:28Speaker 1: but That's where I look at the whole depth chart
- 16:30Speaker 1: and I say, doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.
- 16:33Speaker 1: You don't see this a lot around the NFL.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Well at the time of the trade, as we taught
- 16:38Speaker 2: folks how he really loved him. In fact, it the
- 16:40Speaker 2: way we understood it. He's thirty eight, he turns thirty nine.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Andy Dalton does in October.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Ye.
- 16:46Speaker 2: So Dalton three years ago was going to be Eagles backup.
- 16:49Speaker 2: It was between the Panthers and the Eagles, and he
- 16:51Speaker 2: chose the Panthers, and that three years later they trade
- 16:57Speaker 2: for him. Now on this situation with McKain Dalton, they
- 17:03Speaker 2: also have insurance if they wind up trading the kid
- 17:05Speaker 2: the trade deadline like that. That's part of it because
- 17:09Speaker 2: you have to have that like that. That's absolutely part
- 17:11Speaker 2: of this. You know, percentage wise, you know it's impossible
- 17:14Speaker 2: to figure out, but that's absolutely part of this. It
- 17:16Speaker 2: gives you an insurance policy if you wind up trading McKay.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I mean, that's part of it. So and then but
- 17:21Speaker 2: again moving on to training camp, I just you feel
- 17:25Speaker 2: bad for cal Payton because this guy's a major project.
- 17:29Speaker 2: You want to develop this guy. If he's going to
- 17:30Speaker 2: be a pure quarterback with wildcat whatever you want him
- 17:34Speaker 2: to be and understand stuff. And McCain. Dalton's contracts are
- 17:37Speaker 2: over after the season. Not that Peyton's gonna be the
- 17:40Speaker 2: number two next year, but he's got a four year
- 17:42Speaker 2: rookie deal. You'd like to by year three hopefully he
- 17:47Speaker 2: factors in to be the number two. But how's he
- 17:50Speaker 2: getting reps?
- 17:52Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, I know they do those
- 17:54Speaker 1: those developmental periods and training camp that are ment just
- 17:56Speaker 1: for rookies. They do those during the game, I know.
- 18:00Speaker 1: And Faippo has talked to us about this. Was it
- 18:02Speaker 1: with Carson year one where he had him an hour
- 18:05Speaker 1: before they get no? Carson played your one? Never mind?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Who will no?
- 18:07Speaker 2: He actually so? John said that this is crazy if
- 18:10Speaker 2: you remember JaMarcus Russell howd out this rookie season? Right,
- 18:14Speaker 2: so he would after he reported he was so far
- 18:17Speaker 2: behind because he missed everything the off season. You go
- 18:20Speaker 2: out a few hours before the game and they just
- 18:21Speaker 2: get those are the reps? Yes, he did it with Sunfell,
- 18:24Speaker 2: by the way, That's the why he did too. Right.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So John will get teased because some some coaches round
- 18:31Speaker 2: the league thought he was being a show off. He's like,
- 18:33Speaker 2: I'm trying to develop these guys. What do you talk
- 18:35Speaker 2: you like?
- 18:35Speaker 1: Right?
- 18:36Speaker 2: It was kind of a running joke with us because
- 18:37Speaker 2: that we'd hear this, like I go, hey, just so
- 18:40Speaker 2: you know they figured being a show off, and he'd like,
- 18:42Speaker 2: come on, really, he goes, just so you know, this
- 18:45Speaker 2: is what I'm doing and this is why I'm doing it,
- 18:47Speaker 2: because as you just said, with Knight Sudfeldt, he was
- 18:50Speaker 2: THET three, then he was the two. These are this
- 18:53Speaker 2: is how you you try to be creative within the CBA. Also,
- 18:58Speaker 2: you just don't get the practice reps. You before the
- 19:01Speaker 2: eleventh CBA you got more practice reps. The NFLPA, the
- 19:05Speaker 2: Players Association, one of their big give that one of
- 19:08Speaker 2: the things they wanted from the owners was we don't
- 19:11Speaker 2: want you talking to our players at the off season.
- 19:13Speaker 2: We don't want to practice in April. Okay, that's for
- 19:18Speaker 2: the young players. Older players don't want to be bothered.
- 19:21Speaker 2: We don't want you bothering us. If you come into
- 19:22Speaker 2: Lyft in March and the owners are like, oh, that's
- 19:25Speaker 2: what you want, Hey, we'll get take it right, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 2: but that's fine, that's what they want.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Yeah, so so maybe prior to each game, you know,
- 19:33Speaker 1: there's developmental period for Cole Payton which he could use.
- 19:36Speaker 1: There's ways to get him develop up, but you're right
- 19:39Speaker 1: not getting it in those practice quote unquote send me
- 19:43Speaker 1: live bullets flying in practice. That's tough. But maybe they
- 19:46Speaker 1: feel he's so far from being that that they really
- 19:49Speaker 1: would rather have him working individually with Parker Parks, Fraser Parks,
- 19:56Speaker 1: Frasier h until he's ready for that role. It will
- 20:00Speaker 1: be so so I want to go back though, to Dalton.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Let me ask you. I'm not sure I understand. I
- 20:06Speaker 1: would understand the sense of trading for a key at
- 20:08Speaker 1: the trade deadline if you're another team, because he's in
- 20:10Speaker 1: the last year of his deal and you're you'd be
- 20:13Speaker 1: giving up. I mean, the Eagles are gonna want something
- 20:15Speaker 1: for him, and because they're gonna if they let him walk,
- 20:17Speaker 1: they probably get a pretty good like no, no lower
- 20:20Speaker 1: than a fourth round compick because he's gonna sign a
- 20:23Speaker 1: big deal because a quarterback. So I don't know, I
- 20:27Speaker 1: don't know how the the they would see that, but
- 20:29Speaker 1: I think it's more likely by the end of camp,
- 20:31Speaker 1: if a team loses a quarterback, they might look for
- 20:34Speaker 1: m Key. But if not, if that doesn't happen, is
- 20:37Speaker 1: there an is there a chance in your mind that
- 20:39Speaker 1: the Eagles, like kind of like the move Flacco, do
- 20:42Speaker 1: they trade Dalton to a place where he can be
- 20:45Speaker 1: the backup Because if I'm Dalton's agent, I'm gonna say, look, Howie,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I get it. You traded for my client. He wants
- 20:51Speaker 1: you needed insurance. You thought you might have a deal
- 20:53Speaker 1: for a Key, but he is not a number three
- 20:55Speaker 1: quarter but he wants at this stage of his career
- 20:57Speaker 1: to be a backup quarterback.
- 20:58Speaker 2: You know, but you you would if you trade for McKay.
- 21:01Speaker 2: This is this is a good point you make if
- 21:02Speaker 2: you make if you trade for McKay, it's one of
- 21:05Speaker 2: two reasons your starting quarterback got hurt in season, which
- 21:08Speaker 2: we didn't mention for both that happened. Or you're like, okay,
- 21:11Speaker 2: our veterans contracts up. He We're we're we're not going
- 21:16Speaker 2: to resign him. We want this kid. We have his
- 21:19Speaker 2: rights till till March. Middle of March, he becomes a
- 21:21Speaker 2: free agent, will negotiate with the with the agent and
- 21:25Speaker 2: he's our guy until then, right, and we're gonna we're
- 21:27Speaker 2: extend his correct. There's a path, obviously a path to
- 21:30Speaker 2: do this. I hear what you're saying, but.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just saying, if they're not, if there's not,
- 21:34Speaker 1: if McKee is on the team and your Dalton, do
- 21:37Speaker 1: you ask the Eagles to do you a solid and say, please,
- 21:41Speaker 1: don't wait five weeks to see if some guy gets hurt, Like,
- 21:43Speaker 1: just just trade me to a team where I could
- 21:45Speaker 1: be a backup. Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 22:44Speaker 1: one and up.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Maybe, I mean, maybe it's.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Just running a scout team, Adam, I hear you.
- 22:51Speaker 2: But if I'm Howie, it's about Look, it's our decision,
- 22:55Speaker 2: and we hear you, but we're trying to win here
- 22:58Speaker 2: and we're trying to get value. Mckaig. I'm just telling
- 23:01Speaker 2: you this, and I know on paper and we need
- 23:03Speaker 2: to explain this very quickly. Yes, it's true on paper.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Next year could be great for quarterbacks for the draft
- 23:10Speaker 2: and may be terrible. Okay, it may be terrible. It
- 23:13Speaker 2: depends how they play. People just to say stuff without
- 23:17Speaker 2: understanding the way it works. Yes, teams look at that,
- 23:21Speaker 2: but they know these guys could play port. Garrett Moulsmeyer
- 23:23Speaker 2: is the best example of this.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Aler and Nosmeyer.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Aller, who man, some of your said Penn State, you go,
- 23:30Speaker 2: this kid's a sure fire for this kid's got it.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Then he regresses so.
- 23:34Speaker 1: And he broke his leg too. That was a big
- 23:35Speaker 1: part of it was he only played a few.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Games, right, But getting back to McKee, he's in no quantity.
- 23:42Speaker 2: He's in the National Football he has tape out there.
- 23:44Speaker 2: You kind of know who he is. So it's a
- 23:46Speaker 2: fascinating discussion in a league that has major problems developing quarterbacks.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Maybe all right, all right, So it's just fascinating. There's
- 23:55Speaker 1: no doubt it's unique. You don't see a lot of
- 23:57Speaker 1: fifteen year vets as your number three quarterback running scout team.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So we'll see how that goes with the situation. Now,
- 24:04Speaker 1: we didn't The one thing that we should also address,
- 24:07Speaker 1: and I think you're hinting towards this too, is you know,
- 24:09Speaker 1: McKee's situation is a little bit uncertain because if there
- 24:13Speaker 1: is an scenario right where Jalen Hurts, a gets hurt
- 24:18Speaker 1: long term, or really struggles, the Eagles still have control
- 24:22Speaker 1: here over McKee for one more year, they may think
- 24:26Speaker 1: going forward, he's a better option. This is a very
- 24:28Speaker 1: minute I don't want the Jalen Hurts haters coming, I
- 24:30Speaker 1: mean lovers coming after us saying where we're trying to
- 24:32Speaker 1: bury the guy in the grave. We're just going through
- 24:34Speaker 1: every single scenario possible, right If for whatever reason, as
- 24:40Speaker 1: you mentioned earlier in the show, Hurts, the offense thinks
- 24:43Speaker 1: it's not good. They go to McKey and McKey does
- 24:45Speaker 1: really well and he's a good fit for the offense.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Then all of a sudden you're looking at maybe McKee
- 24:49Speaker 1: being a quarterback of the future.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Well, let me just explain something. I'm just this is like,
- 24:54Speaker 2: if they go to McKay, they're not going back to Hurts.
- 24:56Speaker 2: It's just the way it's going to be. It will
- 25:00Speaker 2: it won't work. I know with Donovan when he got
- 25:03Speaker 2: benched and he would get the job back, that was
- 25:05Speaker 2: a different times were way different than many many, many
- 25:08Speaker 2: many years ago. Yeah, not not in today's NFL and
- 25:13Speaker 2: in a media environment. It just would not work, you
- 25:16Speaker 2: know you. And the thing is Hurts is still very young. Yeah,
- 25:20Speaker 2: it's it's a Hurts his situation and what he could
- 25:24Speaker 2: be and what he is or just in terms of performance,
- 25:28Speaker 2: it's confounded. It's he's one of the most confounding quarterbacks.
- 25:32Speaker 2: If you go back to Oklahoma and Alabama and everything
- 25:35Speaker 2: he's been through. Coach's son mentally tough. Why can't he
- 25:38Speaker 2: be better? Like what from a tape study standpoint, you struggle.
- 25:42Speaker 2: You can only blame coaches so much. Like it's you
- 25:46Speaker 2: just at some point you go either it's gonna happen
- 25:48Speaker 2: or not. But he's still very young.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Right right. It's crazy to me that, by the way,
- 25:54Speaker 1: that Eagle's number three quarterback has as many Pro Bowls
- 25:57Speaker 1: as he was number one quarterback. A big type, I know,
- 26:02Speaker 1: I know, that's just it's a super esparctially the way
- 26:04Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl is now because Hurts is listed as
- 26:07Speaker 1: a twenty twenty five Pro Bowler. But I thought they
- 26:09Speaker 1: were going to stop doing that whole. If you made
- 26:12Speaker 1: it as a third alternate, you're a Pro Bowl.
- 26:14Speaker 2: No, you have to be named originally. You have to
- 26:17Speaker 2: have earned it, to be the starting, to be the
- 26:21Speaker 2: guy to be voted in originally. You can't be replacement Herts.
- 26:26Speaker 2: He only turns twenty eight in August.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Like, that's crazy.
- 26:30Speaker 2: That's the thing. It's it's so much has happened here. Yeah,
- 26:34Speaker 2: I think what ESPN should do. They should do a
- 26:37Speaker 2: thirty for thirty on Wentz and Hurts and their careers here.
- 26:42Speaker 2: That's absolutely thirty for thirty.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Oh agree, it would be amazing.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 26:47Speaker 1: You can even go Donovan, No, you can then just
- 26:50Speaker 1: do on quarterbacks.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Donovan looked, I mean Michael Vick. Obviously there was one,
- 26:54Speaker 2: there was a or whatever you call it. He's sixty
- 26:55Speaker 2: on them. But yeah, Eagles quarterback history is fascinating, all right.
- 27:00Speaker 1: So that's a look at the quarterback depth chart again
- 27:03Speaker 1: worth its own pod because as unique as you'll ever
- 27:06Speaker 1: see in the NFL. That's gonna do it for this
- 27:09Speaker 1: episode of Inside the Birds and Leading Podcast and Eagles Intel,
