Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk.
- 0:04Podcast. This is a show.
- 0:06Where we? Discuss the critical crossroads,
- 0:08the shape SpaceX. Tesla X, The Boring Company and
- 0:12Neuralink. I'm your host, Will Walden.
- 0:16Tesla's major competitor, Ford Motor Company is urging its
- 0:19dealers to halt their investments in the EV
- 0:22certification program amid upcoming changes to the program.
- 0:27Now this request comes as the company plans to introduce
- 0:29updates to its EV strategy. Responding to the evolving
- 0:32market dynamics that are going on right now.
- 0:35Now the CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, announced in December of 2022
- 0:39that 1920 dealers would join Ford's EV sales program.
- 0:45However, since then, several dealers have opted out, leading
- 0:49Ford to revise its EV strategy. Marty Gunsberg, a Ford
- 0:54spokesperson, confirmed that as of December, dealer enrollment
- 0:57for 2023 has dropped to just about 50% for about 2/3 a year
- 1:03prior. This decline is attributed to
- 1:06changes in the market, prompting Ford to ease some program
- 1:10requirements. Now.
- 1:11Last year, Ford reduced the number of required Level 2
- 1:15chargers and extended the installation timeline.
- 1:18Andrew Frick, who's the president of Ford Blue,
- 1:21indicated that further changes are forthcoming.
- 1:25Frick said there's a lot that we'll be reviewing now.
- 1:28Ford plans to meet with his dealer council next month to
- 1:31finalize updates, taking into account feedback from nationwide
- 1:35meetings with dealers. Now Ford has asked dealers to
- 1:39pause their investments in the EV certification program until
- 1:42mid June. The company aims to provide more
- 1:45informed guidance based on the forthcoming council discussions,
- 1:51Frick said. We don't want them to make any
- 1:53decisions between now and the middle of June, emphasizing the
- 1:58need for dealers to wait for more detailed information before
- 2:01proceeding with their investments.
- 2:05Now, one significant concern among dealers is the shifting EV
- 2:08market. Ford has allayed some of its EV
- 2:11plans and is focusing on smaller, more profitable EV
- 2:16models, aiming to better align its dealer network with these
- 2:20new objectives. And while Frick did not disclose
- 2:24specifics, he noted that both the dealer console and
- 2:27executives are reliant on the process.
- 2:29Based on feedback from the dealer meetings recently, Ford
- 2:34has sought cost cutting ideas from suppliers to make its E VS
- 2:38more affordable. The Model E unit posted a $1.3
- 2:42billion loss in quarter one and a $4.7 billion loss last year.
- 2:51A Ford anticipates a $5.5 billion loss in its EV business
- 2:56this year. Fairly emphasized that Model E
- 2:59must stand on its own. Ford projects that its next
- 3:02generation E VS will become profitable within a year of
- 3:05their launch. Meanwhile, the company is
- 3:08introducing more hybrids to bridge the gap.
- 3:12Now the request for dealers to pause EV investments follows A
- 3:16comprehensive review of feedback for over 1000 dealers across 11
- 3:21meetings during a recent dealer engagement tour, they said.
- 3:26We're now in the process of reviewing all that collaborative
- 3:30engagement and turning it into intermediate, midterm and long
- 3:35term changes where it makes sense for our customers, our
- 3:39dealers and Ford. Specific details will be shared
- 3:43in the coming weeks. Changes to the EV certification
- 3:46program last November reduced the requirement for L2 chargers
- 3:51from 5:00 to 2:00 for certified status and from 5:00 to 3:00 for
- 3:56certified Elite status. The need for a Level 3 fast
- 3:59charger by 2026 was also removed.
- 4:03Now Ford's Model E-business unit has faced financial challenges
- 4:07leading to a delay in $12 billion worth of EV related
- 4:11spending due to slower than expected EV sales growth
- 4:15impacted by affordable issues and insufficient charging
- 4:19structure. Now as of December 2020, two 2/3
- 4:23of dealers had signed up for the EV charging program.
- 4:26Currently, about half of Ford's dealer network is enrolled.
- 4:29The program has faced legal challenges with varying results.
- 4:35Now, Ford's dealer console meeting next month will address
- 4:38the feedback received from the recent dealer tour aiming to
- 4:42refine the EV certification program and possibly other
- 4:46business areas, they said. Our plans are really aimed at
- 4:50simplifying and reducing complexity.
- 4:52The company will review everything from floor plan
- 4:56assistance to Model E standards and Ford credit policies.
- 4:59And the EV certification program has been controversial due to
- 5:03significant investments required for dealers.
- 5:06Despite multiple revisions, Ford has seen a substantial drop in
- 5:10dealer participation. Ford continues to develop future
- 5:14EV models and aims for increased affordability, including a
- 5:18rumored next generation electric pickup.
- 5:22Now the company remains committed to adopting its
- 5:25strategy to changing market conditions.
- 5:28What was great is that we. Had candid.
- 5:30Conversations around every aspect of the business, nothing
- 5:33was off limits, said Frick. Its collaborative nature of the
- 5:38recent dealer meetings. Hey, thank.
