- 0:00Speaker 1: On Thursdays, the presidents of every single SEC school are
- 0:04Speaker 1: scheduled to vote on whether or not LSU still belongs
- 0:07Speaker 1: in this conference. It's not a suspension. It's not a fine.
- 0:12Speaker 1: It's a vote on whether or not to remove a
- 0:14Speaker 1: founding member, a school that has been in this league
- 0:17Speaker 1: since the conference's founding in 1932, from that conference entirely.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Welcome to College Football Addiction. Hopefully, this is one of
- 0:26Speaker 1: the very final updates that we have on the LSU
- 0:28Speaker 1: SEC drama. We are presented by PrizePix. We're all new
- 0:32Speaker 1: users who play a $ 5 lineup, get $ 150 in lineups
- 0:35Speaker 1: instantly if they win using code HMA. I was in
- 0:39Speaker 1: Dote Campbell Stadium on Monday night, and I'm still trying
- 0:41Speaker 1: to nurse a voice back to health. I've got my
- 0:44Speaker 1: trusty mug, and I've got some black coffee, and I
- 0:47Speaker 1: don't know if it's really working too much, but I'm
- 0:48Speaker 1: trying my best, so you'll have to bear with me today.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Things certainly escalated this week, and less than 48 hours
- 0:56Speaker 1: before that vote was scheduled to take place, LSU quietly
- 1:00Speaker 1: ended the entire fight themselves. We've talked plenty about this
- 1:05Speaker 1: back and forth between the conference and the courtroom and
- 1:08Speaker 1: the commissioner and the coach and everything else that's happened,
- 1:13Speaker 1: but let's talk about why, for the first time in
- 1:15Speaker 1: maybe three weeks, this actually feels like it's almost over. Again,
- 1:19Speaker 1: on Tuesday, the SEC amended its federal lawsuit against LSU
- 1:23Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin and school officials. Buried inside that filing was
- 1:27Speaker 1: the part that actually made people sit up. The conference
- 1:30Speaker 1: is asking for the legal authority to terminate LSU's membership outright.
- 1:37Speaker 1: To actually pull that off, it requires a two-thirds vote
- 1:41Speaker 1: of every president in the league. Now, that's an enormous bar.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Conferences do not typically remove founding members. There's television money
- 1:50Speaker 1: tied up in that membership. There's hundreds of years of
- 1:53Speaker 1: history tied up in that membership. It's not a rule
- 1:56Speaker 1: you invoke lightly, which is exactly why nobody who's covered
- 2:00Speaker 1: this closely thinks that LSU is actually getting out on Thursday.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Nobody really believes that'll happen. Now, if it does, I'll
- 2:08Speaker 1: get on here and eat some crow and maybe that'll
- 2:11Speaker 1: help my throat, but I'll get on here and we'll
- 2:13Speaker 1: talk about it. But nobody really thinks that that's what's
- 2:15Speaker 1: going to happen. I don't think it was really about
- 2:18Speaker 1: removing LSU. I think it was about making sure the
- 2:21Speaker 1: SEC has the legal right to remove LSU if they
- 2:25Speaker 1: ever need to. Establishing that authority on paper in a
- 2:28Speaker 1: courtroom while the underlying fight over these players is still unresolved.
- 2:33Speaker 1: The conference wants more leverage than it actually wants expulsion.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It's the difference between owning a weapon and using one.
- 2:44Speaker 1: But here's what that filing tells you, regardless of whether
- 2:47Speaker 1: Thursday's vote ever gets used. The SEC accused LSU of
- 2:52Speaker 1: a complete lack of institutional control over its head coach,
- 2:57Speaker 1: arguing that Kiffin kept talking publicly about this while LSU's
- 3:01Speaker 1: president and athletic director stayed silent, and that the silence
- 3:05Speaker 1: itself was evidence the school wasn't managing the situation. The
- 3:10Speaker 1: conference said plainly, it has the right to establish the
- 3:14Speaker 1: rules under which they voluntarily compete. And that a founding
- 3:18Speaker 1: member ignoring that authority isn't something it's willing to just
- 3:22Speaker 1: live with. It's about as direct as a conference statement
- 3:26Speaker 1: can get. Now, here's the part of the story that
- 3:29Speaker 1: actually resolved things. Late last night, Tuesday, that same day
- 3:33Speaker 1: as the SEC's filing, LSU added two players to its roster.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And guess what, guys? It wasn't the two players we've
- 3:41Speaker 1: been talking about for three weeks. Cornerback Aiden Anding and
- 3:45Speaker 1: defensive end Gabriel Relaford, both returning Tigers who had been
- 3:49Speaker 1: out with spring injuries, bringing their roster to the full
- 3:54Speaker 1: 105-man limit. If it was any other Tuesday night, if
- 4:00Speaker 1: it was any other team, if it was any other coach,
- 4:02Speaker 1: if it was any other program, it might just be
- 4:05Speaker 1: a normal routine roster move. We would have certainly never
- 4:09Speaker 1: done a video on it on this channel. Not that
- 4:11Speaker 1: every kid's not important, but you understand why. Once a
- 4:15Speaker 1: roster hits 105, it's locked for the rest of the season.
- 4:18Speaker 1: There's no reopening it. By filling those two final roster
- 4:22Speaker 1: spots with a cornerback and a defensive end who'd already
- 4:24Speaker 1: been on campus, LSU effectively closed the door on adding
- 4:28Speaker 1: Daquan Wright and Zavion Harris. I don't think they paused it.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I don't think they delayed it. I think they closed
- 4:34Speaker 1: it for good for this season. Three weeks of lawsuits,
- 4:39Speaker 1: testimony from Greg Sankey, an SEC statement, disagreeing publicly with
- 4:43Speaker 1: a judge's ruling, a letter from Clemson's legal team the
- 4:46Speaker 1: night before the kickoff. Maybe they shouldn't have played that game.
- 4:50Speaker 1: All of it building toward this. Two roster spots filled
- 4:54Speaker 1: with guys who were never part of the controversy at all.
- 4:57Speaker 1: LSU didn't lose this fight in a courtroom. They just
- 5:01Speaker 1: quietly stopped fighting it. Kiffin addressed it directly on College
- 5:05Speaker 1: Game Day last weekend, and to his credit, he didn't
- 5:08Speaker 1: dress it up. He said it wasn't an easy call,
- 5:11Speaker 1: that he still believes those players deserve the chance everyone
- 5:14Speaker 1: else winning these court cases around the country is getting.
- 5:17Speaker 1: But he was blunt about why he made the move anyway.
- 5:19Speaker 1: He had a decision to make that's the bigger picture
- 5:23Speaker 1: for LSU. That's the whole thing to me in one sentence.
- 5:28Speaker 1: It's not a legal opinion. It's not a concession that
- 5:30Speaker 1: the SEC was right. Just a coach deciding to depth
- 5:34Speaker 1: contributors weren't worth risking a program that just put up
- 5:39Speaker 1: 644 yards on a ranked opponent. And that makes it
- 5:44Speaker 1: pretty simple if you're Lane Kiffin. Before I go on,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I want to give some real quick love to Alumni Hall. AlumniHall.com, online, in-store,
- 5:54Speaker 1: doesn't matter. CFA 15 will save you 15%. I've heard
- 5:57Speaker 1: from many of you. You've been taking advantage of this.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Make sure that you are using the code CFA15 with
- 6:03Speaker 1: Alumni Hall and saving 15%. Now, I've done a lot
- 6:08Speaker 1: of talking about this and what little bit my voice
- 6:11Speaker 1: will hold up. I'll tell you, here's my honest read
- 6:14Speaker 1: on the entire three-ish week saga. And I think it's
- 6:18Speaker 1: a read that gets lost in all the back and forth.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I think conferences do ultimately hold the power in this sport.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It's not individual schools. It's not individual coaches. It's not
- 6:28Speaker 1: the NCAA. It's the SEC. It's the Big Ten. To
- 6:32Speaker 1: a lesser extent, it's the Big 12 and the ACC.
- 6:36Speaker 1: They control the TV deals every program depends on. They
- 6:39Speaker 1: control scheduling. It controls access to bowl positioning and revenue
- 6:43Speaker 1: distribution that keeps the entire athletic departments funded. LSU could
- 6:48Speaker 1: win every single ruling in Louisiana State Court, and it
- 6:51Speaker 1: still would not matter because the conference doesn't need a
- 6:54Speaker 1: judge's permission to make membership miserable for a program that
- 6:58Speaker 1: keeps picking fights with it. I truly do not believe
- 7:02Speaker 1: that LSU was ever going to out-leverage that. And to
- 7:06Speaker 1: be fair, I don't think there's a team in this
- 7:08Speaker 1: conference or in the Big Ten conference or in the
- 7:11Speaker 1: ACC or in the Big 12 that can out-leverage an
- 7:14Speaker 1: entire conference. And here's the part that makes this whole
- 7:18Speaker 1: thing even harder to justify in hindsight. LSU never actually
- 7:23Speaker 1: needed Wright and Harris in the first place. Go back
- 7:27Speaker 1: and watch what that roster just did against Clemson without them.
- 7:31Speaker 1: 644 yards, a defense breaking in as many as eight
- 7:35Speaker 1: first-time starters that still looked ready for November in Week 1.
- 7:38Speaker 1: The No. 1 transfer class in the country, headlined by
- 7:41Speaker 1: a quarterback every Blue Blood program in America that had
- 7:44Speaker 1: an opening wanted. This team is going to be elite
- 7:47Speaker 1: this season with or without two guys who didn't make
- 7:51Speaker 1: it through NFL roster cuts this summer. So what did
- 7:54Speaker 1: three weeks of lawsuits, testimony, and an actual conference expulsion
- 7:59Speaker 1: vote actually buy LSU? A tight end and a defensive
- 8:03Speaker 1: lineman who were never going to be the difference between
- 8:05Speaker 1: good seasons and great seasons. I don't think that's a
- 8:08Speaker 1: fight that's worth almost getting removed from your conference over.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's not a fight worth burying your season opener under
- 8:14Speaker 1: a courthouse instead of on a practice field. It wasn't
- 8:18Speaker 1: worth the drama, in my opinion. It never was. Now
- 8:22Speaker 1: it's just time to play ball. And that brings me
- 8:25Speaker 1: to the only thing that actually matters going forward. It
- 8:28Speaker 1: is time to play ball and leave the courtroom drama behind.
- 8:32Speaker 1: We'll see what happens with tomorrow's vote, with tomorrow's meeting.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to be anything too dramatic,
- 8:39Speaker 1: but if it is, I'll talk about it. If you
- 8:43Speaker 1: leave the drama behind and you just play ball, go
- 8:46Speaker 1: over to Clemson, South Carolina and ask them what that
- 8:48Speaker 1: looks like. Because when LSU actually does that, when this
- 8:52Speaker 1: program puts the lawyers away and just plays football, they're
- 8:55Speaker 1: scary as hell. And the rest of college football knows
- 8:58Speaker 1: that too. 644 yards of offense, a defense that suffocated
- 9:04Speaker 1: a decent opponent. I won't call Clemson good by any
- 9:06Speaker 1: means after seeing them in week one. Half the unit
- 9:10Speaker 1: making its first ever start new faces all over the place,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and they were still dominant. That's what LSU looks like
- 9:16Speaker 1: when Lane Kiffin's entire focus is on the team, when
- 9:20Speaker 1: his entire focus is just building the best possible roster
- 9:23Speaker 1: that he can, instead of also managing a legal circus
- 9:27Speaker 1: and all of the things that went on off the field.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Imagine that same energy for 15 more weeks, uninterrupted by
- 9:34Speaker 1: depositions and expulsion votes and statements from attorney generals in
- 9:38Speaker 1: two different states. That's the version of this program that
- 9:42Speaker 1: should terrify the rest of the conference, not the one
- 9:44Speaker 1: that thinks it can out-leverage the SEC in federal court.
- 9:48Speaker 1: That's the program that just handled Clemson by 51 points
- 9:52Speaker 1: in a 51-10 win and probably hasn't even found its
- 9:55Speaker 1: full rhythm yet. So Thursday's vote will probably happen. It'll
- 9:59Speaker 1: probably end with LSU in the SEC because removing a
- 10:03Speaker 1: founding member over a roster dispute was always more of
- 10:05Speaker 1: a message than a threat. The federal case in Alabama
- 10:09Speaker 1: isn't fully dead. The broader legal question about pro players
- 10:12Speaker 1: and college eligibility is still working its way through the system,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and it'll matter for other programs down the road, even
- 10:18Speaker 1: with LSU out of the headlines. But the specific fire
- 10:21Speaker 1: here that's been burning for three weeks, the one that
- 10:23Speaker 1: had Kiffin's name attached to it, I think that one's out.
- 10:27Speaker 1: LSU put it out themselves quietly on a Tuesday night
- 10:30Speaker 1: by filling a roster with two guys that nobody was
- 10:32Speaker 1: arguing about. Three weeks of chaos ended not by a judge,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but not by a conference vote, but by a coach
- 10:39Speaker 1: deciding two players were no longer worth the fight anymore.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And I think it's about time. Now let's go watch
- 10:45Speaker 1: this team actually play football. Because Like I told you
- 10:49Speaker 1: just two days ago, if and when that happens, LSU
- 10:53Speaker 1: might be the scariest team in America, and it has
- 10:55Speaker 1: nothing to do with the courtroom. If you want to
- 10:57Speaker 1: see more about that, you can click the link on
- 10:59Speaker 1: the screen right now to watch my latest video on
- 11:02Speaker 1: LSU and why I think they are a problem. If
- 11:05Speaker 1: we appreciate our friends over at PrizePix one more time,
- 11:08Speaker 1: I'd love to do that and give them some love.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Play $ 5, win that first lineup using code HMA. If
- 11:13Speaker 1: you're a new user, you get $ 150 in lineups instantly.
- 11:16Speaker 1: We'll see you guys next time here on College Football Addiction.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Send a prayer or two for my voice too while
- 11:21Speaker 1: you're at it. See you guys.
