- 0:04Welcome to the USA Cabinet Store Remodeling Podcast.
- 0:08I am Chris, and today we are going deep on what
- 0:11the 2026 kitchen actually looks like, what it
- 0:15actually costs, and the regrets you only hear
- 0:18about after the work is done. I am here with
- 0:21Jessica, our resident kitchen designer. Jessica,
- 0:25welcome. Thanks, Chris. Happy to be here. And
- 0:28I love this episode because we spend so much
- 0:30time looking at trends. and so little time looking
- 0:33at what actually goes wrong. Today I want us
- 0:36to do both. Let us start with the question that
- 0:38puts everyone on edge before they even pick up
- 0:39the phone. Money. What does a kitchen remodel
- 0:43actually cost in 2026? Okay. So here is the honest
- 0:47answer. And it is a range, not a single number.
- 0:51Nationally, the NKBA data puts a medium kitchen
- 0:54between $45 ,000 and $71 ,000. A large kitchen
- 0:58runs $95 ,000 up to $137 ,000. In the DMV area
- 1:03where we work, those numbers go higher because
- 1:05of regional labor and material costs. A full
- 1:08mid -range remodel is more like $45 ,000 to $95
- 1:10,000. And upscale work in places like McLean
- 1:13or Bethesda can pass $300 ,000. That is a huge
- 1:17spread. Why do two bids for what looks like the
- 1:20same kitchen come back $30 ,000 apart? It is
- 1:23almost never padding, even though it feels that
- 1:25way. The difference is four things. Scope. Are
- 1:29you moving plumbing or just swapping cabinets?
- 1:32Cabinet construction quality, plywood versus
- 1:35particle board moves the price by thousands,
- 1:38countertop material, and what the demolition
- 1:41uncovers behind the walls, old wiring, hidden
- 1:44water damage, out of level floors. So my advice
- 1:48to anyone comparing quotes, do not compare the
- 1:51bottom number, compare what is on each line,
- 1:54and always build in a 15 to 25 percent contingency.
- 1:58because most renovations run at least 25 % over
- 2:01the original number. And for people who want
- 2:04a number before they even talk to anyone, we
- 2:06built a free cost calculator for the Northern
- 2:09Virginia market. It is on the site, takes about
- 2:11a minute, and gives you a ballpark before you
- 2:13commit to a consultation. We will drop the link
- 2:16in the show notes. Good move. Okay, now to the
- 2:19fun part. What does the 2026 kitchen actually
- 2:21look like? Because I keep hearing the all -white
- 2:23look is over. It is. Designers are calling it
- 2:27warm minimalism. Clean lines, but softened with
- 2:30natural wood, stone, and grounded neutral colors.
- 2:3496 % of NKBA pros still recommend neutrals, but
- 2:38the shift is from stark white to warmer tones.
- 2:41Putty, mushroom, oatmeal, warm whites, and cool
- 2:44gray cabinets, which dominated for 10 years,
- 2:47are now the single most dated look. They are
- 2:50the new builder beige. Okay, so if someone has
- 2:52cool gray cabinets right now, are they hosed?
- 2:55Not at all. Hardware swap, warmer wall color,
- 2:58brass or un -lacquered brass poles instead of
- 3:01chrome, and you have shifted the whole feel of
- 3:03the room for under a thousand dollars. You do
- 3:06not need to rip everything out. The other big
- 3:09move I love right now is two -tone cabinets,
- 3:12lighter uppers, darker base or island and navy,
- 3:16sage or forest green. About 24 % of new kitchens
- 3:20are doing it. And it is the lowest risk way to
- 3:22add color without committing the whole room to
- 3:24one shade. And what about cabinet doors themselves?
- 3:27Anything changing there? Big move towards slab
- 3:30doors. The flat panel look. 69 % of designers
- 3:34say slab is gaining ground. And wood grain is
- 3:37beating paint for the first time in years. 59
- 3:40% of pros say wood is surpassing painted finishes.
- 3:43And white oak leads at 51%. For countertops,
- 3:48quartzite hits 62 % popularity. That soft green
- 3:51and gold veining. And one of the defining looks
- 3:54of 2026 is the counter splash. The counter material
- 3:59running uninterrupted up the wall. No grout lines.
- 4:02Very calm and expansive. Okay, now I want to
- 4:05get into the part that I think is the most useful
- 4:07part of the whole episode. The regrets. Because
- 4:10everyone shows you the trends. But nobody talks
- 4:13about what people actually regret after the dust
- 4:15settles. What is the number one thing? doors
- 4:19instead of drawers on the lower cabinets. By
- 4:22far. Across hundreds of homeowner discussions
- 4:24we have read, this is the most upvoted regret
- 4:27every single time. Reaching into the dark back
- 4:31corner of a base cabinet for a heavy pot gets
- 4:33old fast. Every lower cabinet should be a drawer.
- 4:38If a full drawer base swap is out of budget,
- 4:40retrofit pullout shelves into the cabinets you
- 4:42keep, the access is almost as good for a fraction
- 4:46of the cost. Wait. Drawers cost the same as doors,
- 4:49though, right? Why do builders default to doors?
- 4:52Habit, mostly. Drawer -based cabinets are slightly
- 4:55more expensive in some lines, but the difference
- 4:57is small, and when you factor in usability, it
- 5:00is the easiest win in the kitchen. Push for drawers
- 5:03anywhere you can. Okay, what else? What is the
- 5:05next one? Two more big ones. First, outlets and
- 5:09the wrong wiring. Whatever number of outlets
- 5:11you think you need, add more. And here is the
- 5:14specific mistake I see all the time. putting
- 5:17the small appliance circuit on the same circuit
- 5:19as the lights. So every time you turn on the
- 5:22air fryer or the microwave, the lights dim. Keep
- 5:26your appliance circuits separate from your lighting
- 5:28and plan dedicated circuits for the heavy draws.
- 5:32Second, expensive designer appliances that fail
- 5:34in four or five years. Ice makers that quit,
- 5:38ovens slow to preheat, dishwashers that trap
- 5:41mold around the seal. Buy on reliability and
- 5:44serviceability, not just the brand badge. That
- 5:47outlet one is brutal. People do not find out
- 5:49until everything is installed. Anything else?
- 5:51Yes. Three quick ones. Single large sink basin.
- 5:55Not a double. Because when you do hand wash,
- 5:58it is usually something big. A sheet pan. A stock
- 6:01pot. A workstation sink with a built -in cutting
- 6:05board and rack is the upgrade people rave about
- 6:07more than any other. Islands that are too big.
- 6:11Anything you cannot reach from a comfortable
- 6:12arm length becomes wasted center space. and deep
- 6:16pantry shelves that turn into a black hole, use
- 6:18shallow shelves or pull -outs, plus a light that
- 6:21comes on when the door opens. Okay, switching
- 6:23gears. Let us talk cabinets, because you mentioned
- 6:26plywood versus particle board earlier, and I
- 6:28want to dig into that. What should people actually
- 6:30be asking when they shop for cabinets? Four questions.
- 6:33One, what is the box made of, the actual cabinet
- 6:36body? Plywood holds up to moisture and weight
- 6:39far better than particle board. Our standard
- 6:42is 3 quarter inch KCMA certified plywood. That
- 6:45is the industry quality certification. Two, drawer
- 6:49hardware are the drawer boxes dovetailed. Soft
- 6:52close, full extension. Stapled boxes are the
- 6:56tell on cheap cabinets. Three, what does semi
- 6:59-custom actually include? Because that word means
- 7:02different things at different suppliers. And
- 7:05four, get the exact door style, color code, and
- 7:08box spec on the written order. then check the
- 7:11delivery against it before installation. Wrong
- 7:14color or defective deliveries are a common and
- 7:16avoidable headache. And cheap online cabinets,
- 7:19the ones from those dropship websites, are they
- 7:21ever a good idea? Honestly, almost never. People
- 7:25come to us all the time with cabinets that arrived
- 7:28in the wrong color, with jammed tracks, or with
- 7:30boxes that sag within a year. The cheapest cabinet
- 7:34is rarely the least expensive once you factor
- 7:36in how soon you replace it. We carry quality
- 7:39lines like Fabuwood, Showplace, Ultra Craft,
- 7:43Birch, Balfourmont, Mantra. Specifically because
- 7:46we are tired of clients calling us six months
- 7:48later, asking us to fix what they got from somewhere
- 7:51else. Let us talk about the other huge fear.
- 7:54The contractor who stops answering the phone.
- 7:57Six weeks becomes six months. How do you prevent
- 8:00that going in? Three things to insist on before
- 8:03you sign anything. One. a named project manager
- 8:07you can reach by call or text, not the company
- 8:10mainline, an actual person. Two, a written timeline
- 8:14with dated milestones, not just a few weeks,
- 8:17real dates for demo, rough -in, inspections,
- 8:21cabinets, countertop template and install. Three,
- 8:26a set schedule for updates, a standing weekly
- 8:29check -in, even a quick one, beats wondering
- 8:31whether anyone is coming back. Poor communication
- 8:35is the most common complaint in every remodeling
- 8:37forum, and these three safeguards prevent most
- 8:39of it. And realistic timelines, what should people
- 8:42actually expect? Cosmetic refresh, two to four
- 8:45weeks. Mid -range remodel, eight to twelve weeks.
- 8:48Full gut, three to six months. The biggest delay
- 8:52drivers are custom cabinet lead times, four to
- 8:55eight weeks. Countertop templating, two to four
- 8:58weeks. Inspection scheduling and hidden issues
- 9:01found at demo. So always plan for 30 to 50 percent
- 9:05more time than the most optimistic estimate.
- 9:07Okay, last thing before we wrap. We have talked
- 9:10about a lot of generic advice, but what does
- 9:12USA cabinet store actually do differently? Because
- 9:15anyone can say they communicate well. Fair question.
- 9:18The way I would answer that is do not take our
- 9:21word for it. Look at our reviews. We have over
- 9:24600 Google reviews across 16 showrooms at a 4
- 9:27.8 star average. 240 of them are at our Houston
- 9:31upper Kirby store alone. And what people actually
- 9:34write about, again and again, is the project
- 9:37manager being available by text or call, the
- 9:40designer reworking the layout to stay on budget
- 9:42rather than upselling, and clients saying things
- 9:45like, she studied every inch of the kitchen.
- 9:47It is not marketing copy. It is what hundreds
- 9:50of customers said in their own words. And on
- 9:53the material side, you mentioned the KCMA plywood
- 9:55standard. Anything else worth flagging? Yes.
- 9:58Free 3D design and consultation before you commit
- 10:01a dollar. 16 showrooms across Virginia, Maryland,
- 10:05DC, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, New Jersey,
- 10:09and Florida. NKBA, NARI, and BBB accredited.
- 10:15And just this year, our Houston showroom won
- 10:17the NKBA Innovative Showroom Award at KBIS 2026,
- 10:22which is a real industry credential. 13 plus
- 10:25years doing this since 2011. So when we say we
- 10:28know what dates a kitchen we have seen the cycle
- 10:31all right give people the takeaways if they remember
- 10:33three things from this episode What should they
- 10:35be three takeaways number one drawers everywhere
- 10:39on the lower cabinets? No exceptions with separate
- 10:42appliance circuits and a workstation sink Those
- 10:46two changes alone eliminate the most common regrets
- 10:48we hear number two warm winds warm whites white
- 10:54oak putty, mushroom, navy or sage if you want
- 10:57color. Brass instead of chrome, matte finishes
- 11:00instead of high gloss. Cool gray is the new dated.
- 11:04Number three, choose a remodeler who gives you
- 11:06a named project manager and a dated written timeline
- 11:09and ask what the cabinet boxes are made of. If
- 11:12they cannot answer plywood versus particle board,
- 11:15walk away. Perfect. So if you are listening and
