- 0:10What's going on, everybody? I had a fantastic three day
- 0:15weekend plus a little wrap around with my family at
- 0:19Disneyland. We had a blast.
- 0:23I mean, it was needed, it was wanted.
- 0:26It was absolutely perfect. We went down with my dad and
- 0:33then my brother and my brother's family.
- 0:37He I have a niece and a nephew with him.
- 0:41Awesome time. And you know, I was thinking
- 0:44about it and yes, I I definitely am.
- 0:48I lost my voice and it's starting to come back.
- 0:53I might have to a couple of times during the episode edit
- 0:56out a coughing spell or two, but but I power on.
- 1:01I play hurt, no rest days for me.
- 1:05I I don't have load management days like LeBron.
- 1:10I just put my head down and I continue to pull the plow.
- 1:16And I was thinking about it as, as we were there because
- 1:19vacations and, and even going on rides are sort of a, a microcosm
- 1:26of life. And they're a microcosm of
- 1:30collecting and, and the journey of it.
- 1:35And The thing is that like, you wait in line and you wait and
- 1:40you wait and you wait and you're thinking and you're
- 1:43anticipating, you know, and, and then you get on the ride and you
- 1:48spin around for a while or you, you go fast and you turn and
- 1:53before you know it, it's over. It's over.
- 1:58And if you don't make sure that you're actually enjoying the
- 2:03journey and the ride itself, then what are we doing?
- 2:09What are we doing? I find myself in life continuing
- 2:16to say I will be happy when this happens, when I get the
- 2:19promotion, when I get the raise, when I have a child, when I meet
- 2:25my wife, when we buy the house, when we buy a bigger house.
- 2:31Every time I turn around I'm not satisfied.
- 2:36I'm constantly wanting more. I'm constantly setting my next
- 2:41goal. And when I do that, I feel like
- 2:47sometimes you have to seriously stop and smell the roses.
- 2:53You have to stop and enjoy what you've got.
- 2:57And with collecting, it's the same way so many of us.
- 3:02It doesn't matter if you have the world's best collection or
- 3:06if you just started six months ago.
- 3:10You have some awesome items in your collection.
- 3:14And if all we're doing is setting our sights on the next
- 3:18edition and we're not enjoying what we have, what's the point?
- 3:26What's the point? I really think that sometimes we
- 3:31need to take a step back and we need to just look and, and, and
- 3:37find a way to find joy in what we have instead of what we don't
- 3:44have. I just kept thinking about that
- 3:49during the trip and I get so frustrated with myself because
- 3:53I'm, I'm such a goal oriented person.
- 3:57Every time I I turn the corner, I look for the next corner and I
- 4:06can't just be proud of myself or be proud of my collection or be
- 4:12proud of my accomplishments. I just wanted to share that to
- 4:18start off this Wednesday episode.
- 4:20I apologize for my voice, but it is what it is and part of living
- 4:29is getting sick at times and if I never lost my voice, I
- 4:35wouldn't appreciate the times that I have it.
- 4:40If I always felt great and I never felt bad, I wouldn't
- 4:47appreciate the times that I feel truly healthy.
- 4:53There's something to think about to start us off on this
- 4:55Wednesday. As always, if you have a
- 4:59question for an upcoming episode, please down below in
- 5:02the comments, ask it. These Wednesday episodes are
- 5:07dependent on all of you. In order for these to continue,
- 5:13I need you all to ask questions. We've been doing them for a
- 5:16while. I love doing them.
- 5:20But if you stop asking questions, these Wednesday
- 5:24episodes stop. So down below in the comments,
- 5:27simply ask them. All right, First question, which
- 5:32was actually asked I think a couple of weeks ago right here.
- 5:39My good buddy Jake over at Wax Pack Wisdom says interesting
- 5:44topic, spending limits on cards you haven't seen in person.
- 5:49I've grappled with the same topic.
- 5:51Usually I'm at around a $1000 cap for cards bought online.
- 5:57It's not so much about not trusting sellers.
- 6:00There are ways to protect against those concerns.
- 6:04It's more about what you said. I want to hold the card in my
- 6:08hands and see it with my eyes. In a previous video, you so
- 6:14thoroughly described your process for buying your red
- 6:18portrait, Cobb at the National. You can't replicate that on the
- 6:22Internet, but at the same time there that process can be
- 6:27limiting. If you want to buy a 5 figure
- 6:30card that requires liquidating part of your PC and pulling
- 6:35money from different sources, that can be a hard one to pull
- 6:40off in person at a show. I guess I should frame this as a
- 6:45question. If you came across the perfect 5
- 6:48figure card at a show, but you don't have the money for it in
- 6:53hand, how would you try to acquire it?
- 6:56Try to somehow get the money there, work out a deal with the
- 7:01dealer to try and acquire it later, as long as they don't
- 7:05sell it beforehand or just walk away.
- 7:10All right, First off again, my buddy Jake over a wax back
- 7:14Wisdom is a 10 out of 10 human. He is a fantastic guy.
- 7:20He's got a great channel. Some of my favorite content is
- 7:26is his he's he's a lot of fun, very knowledgeable, way smarter
- 7:32than I'll ever be. And I love the question, the
- 7:37logistics of I found the card, but I don't quite have the cash
- 7:43at the moment. Well, I actually might surprise
- 7:49you with what I have to say here.
- 7:53Here's my thought. The thing about modern
- 7:57collectors is modern collectors, they bring all their cards
- 8:03wherever they go. Modern collectors had their
- 8:06little wheelies and they they had their Zion.
- 8:10Is that what they're called? Zion case, their Zion cases,
- 8:13Pelican cases, whatever that whatever they're called.
- 8:16And they bring their cards and they bring them all over the
- 8:19place. And then when there's a card
- 8:22that they want, they've got the capital with them, they've got
- 8:27cash with them, and they've got cards with them.
- 8:31I think that to answer your question, a decent idea is when
- 8:39you go to a show like Strongsville, like the National,
- 8:44like White Plains or whatever it is.
- 8:47I mean, I'm going down to the Burbank show now called the West
- 8:51Coast Card Show in February, and I'm bringing some money and I'm
- 8:57going to leave some in an account which I could transfer.
- 9:02But I'm thinking about bringing some cards too, because you
- 9:05never know. I think what a lot of us do is
- 9:10we tend to only bring cash, but why not bring some cash and
- 9:19bring some cards? And I'm not talking about the
- 9:22cards that you wouldn't part with, the special cards that you
- 9:26know you would never get rid of. For me, those cards tend to be
- 9:32cards that have a story that is attached or a card that was
- 9:37given to me from somebody that I care about.
- 9:41Those cards aren't going anywhere.
- 9:43I'll never need to bring those with me because I'll never part
- 9:45with them. But you know how sometimes you
- 9:48go through your collection and you go well, under the right
- 9:53circumstances, I would be willing to part with that card.
- 9:59That would be an example of what I would do before you go to a
- 10:04big show, before Strongsville, before the National.
- 10:10Go through your collection, see what cards you might be willing
- 10:14to part with under the right circumstances, and bring them
- 10:21now. Don't bring them if you'd be
- 10:23uncomfortable bringing them. Don't bring them if they have
- 10:28value to a level that makes you feel less than safe.
- 10:37But otherwise, bring them. At the very least, bring
- 10:43pictures of them. Bring comps and maybe you can
- 10:50put down a deposit on a card with trade attached to it.
- 10:55So like Ash does this a lot. He does lots of cash and trade
- 10:59deals. So if you said to Ash, all
- 11:02right, I want this card, here's $2000 cash and I have these 10
- 11:09cards, what would you give me for each of them?
- 11:13And then once you get home, you mail in the rest of the cards
- 11:20and then emails you the card that you put the deposit and
- 11:23cash down on. Sometimes we have to get
- 11:26creative, but if there are cards in your collection, I would not
- 11:33sell them before getting the card that you want because what
- 11:37if you get out bid? What if you don't land the card?
- 11:42Another thing that you could do is you could pay yourself back.
- 11:47I have my card account, I have a card savings account and I have
- 11:51a card checking account, and then I have a regular life
- 11:55account and a regular life savings account.
- 11:59If there was a card I would say $3000 outside of my card account
- 12:06budget. I could borrow from my life
- 12:11money from my real savings account and then pay for the
- 12:17card with my card account money and then pay myself back.
- 12:25It's an idea but always never ever ever do anything where you
- 12:31are stretching yourself too thin.
- 12:34Don't borrow for borrow from yourself if you know you can't
- 12:38pay it back. Don't borrow from yourself if
- 12:42you don't have a realistic expectation of what the cards
- 12:47that you currently have would sell for, or if they're not very
- 12:52liquid. Just because you think it's
- 12:55worth 1000, is it actually worth 1000?
- 12:59So borrowing from yourself, bringing cards for trade with
- 13:05you that maybe you don't want to trade, but if the right
- 13:09circumstances happened, you have them as backup for additional
- 13:15capital. That would probably be my advice
- 13:19on what I would consider doing when going to a big show if I
- 13:24know that there might be something I want that's just out
- 13:29of my price range. This next one says thanks for
- 13:33all you do. Greg and I recently got a big
- 13:36card in the mail that I'm stoked on.
- 13:39As soon as I opened up the package I could tell this would
- 13:43be my forever copy for me. Last year I made another
- 13:47purchase that I was really excited about, but as soon as I
- 13:51opened the package I could tell this was not the copy for me.
- 13:56I worked hard to move things around to secure the card, but
- 14:00it just didn't meet the expectations that I had for it.
- 14:04After reviewing photos beforehand, I've already moved
- 14:08on from this card that I was hoping to keep forever.
- 14:12Question. What tips or resources can you
- 14:16share to help raise the probability of having proper
- 14:20expectations of the card with I appeal of an incoming card
- 14:25without having the opportunity to see it in person?
- 14:29This is specifically in regard to vintage baseball.
- 14:34All right, sorry, I just had a massive coughing fit.
- 14:40So if it looks like I'm crying, it wasn't from the question, it
- 14:46was from the coughing fit. All right, to your question
- 14:50first, always, and I mean always, before you buy a card,
- 14:58check the SGC database and the PSA database to get the high
- 15:04resolution image of the card and zoom in on the corners, on the
- 15:09surface, on the edges, on the centering and look that card
- 15:13over as thoroughly as you can. If the card was graded or
- 15:18reholdered within the last couple of years, there will
- 15:21probably be an image in the database.
- 15:25That is without any question, a must do for any card.
- 15:32So you look on the listing, say it's an eBay listing, you get
- 15:37the serial number, you go to the PSA website, you type in the
- 15:40code, the serial number, you search it and if it was graded
- 15:46somewhat recently, there will be a or or reholdered somewhat
- 15:50interest recently. There will be an image of it.
- 15:54Have to do that. Number 2, if you buy it through
- 15:59an auction house, if it's a Mile High or a heritage or a golden,
- 16:04you can e-mail them and you can ask questions about the card.
- 16:09You say, hey, I'm looking at lot #213 can you look at the surface
- 16:16and can you confirm for me that it doesn't have any wrinkles,
- 16:20doesn't have any creases? You can ask them, hey, does it
- 16:28have any indentations? You can ask questions through
- 16:32the auction houses. So if you're buying it through
- 16:35an auction house, you can ask questions.
- 16:38You can also again use the SGC and PSA databases.
- 16:45You can also look up the card and see if it had sold recently
- 16:50and if it is sold recently, if you go to like you know, I use
- 16:54card ladder. Highly recommend card ladder
- 16:57again, one month free or $20 off a year subscription of card
- 17:02ladder promo code midlife and you'll get, you'll get that.
- 17:08So try card ladder. But if you look up card ladder,
- 17:11say it's a 53 mantle in APSA 5. If you look over the last few
- 17:18years, you might find the same card with the same serial
- 17:22number, like the exact same card.
- 17:24And maybe those images are better.
- 17:27Check out those images. So try to find other images of
- 17:30the card. If it's an eBay auction, you can
- 17:36ask you just message the seller and ask for additional pictures.
- 17:41Say can you send me two or three additional pictures of each
- 17:47corner, a close-ups of each corner.
- 17:51There's a spot on the bottom of the back that I'm not sure what
- 17:55it is. Can you send me three or four
- 17:57additional pictures? And most of the time they'll do
- 18:00that asking For more information and additional photos.
- 18:08Huge help, especially with auction houses.
- 18:12Definitely look for additional images, especially the high
- 18:16quality, high resolution images on the SGC in the PSA website.
- 18:21But if you're not holding it in hand, there will always be a
- 18:25risk. Here's the other thing, and I've
- 18:30done this before. If the card has a return policy,
- 18:34if it's an eBay listing, a lot of listings are like within 30
- 18:40days you can return it. Well that changes a lot.
- 18:46I have paid more for cards before, then had like a 30 day
- 18:53return policy because I knew I could buy it, get it and if it
- 18:58didn't mean what I hoped it was I could return it.
- 19:03The cards that are the biggest concern are the ones that have
- 19:07no returns. Those are the biggest concern.
- 19:12I have bought some cards that weren't cheap before, got it in
- 19:16hand and said but the reason I bought it and took the risk is
- 19:23because there is a return policy.
- 19:26So look into return policies as well.
- 19:29Those are a few tips that I have used over the years.
- 19:33I hope that those help. This one says great video as
- 19:38always. Question for the future.
- 19:41With an MLB shutdown likely in 2027, how do you think it will
- 19:47impact baseball cards, both modern and vintage?
- 19:53I've heard a lot of people talk about a likely shutdown.
- 19:59I don't know, I maybe I'm naive. It just seems like if if games
- 20:06are lost or too many games are lost.
- 20:09Looking at the past and how poorly that went, I wonder if
- 20:16they would really make that mistake.
- 20:20We have billionaires. Fighting with millionaires and
- 20:26there isn't going to be a ton of sympathy from the fans.
- 20:33So will they really do that? But that's not your question.
- 20:38Your question is, if it were to happen, how would it affect the
- 20:41market? That's such a tough thing to
- 20:44ask. I mean, it's impossible to know.
- 20:48It obviously would affect vintage cards less then it would
- 20:53affect modern cards. You know, it's not going to
- 20:56affect Harmon Killebruce stats. It's not going to affect how
- 21:01many home runs Hank Aaron hits this year, but it might affect
- 21:07Bobby Witt, it might affect show.
- 21:09Hey, it might affect Aaron Judge, I guess.
- 21:13But even those guys, I think that people they so much of
- 21:20modern buying is about what they think could happen if they could
- 21:26become considered an all time great, if they could break a
- 21:32home run record. I I guess it could affect that.
- 21:39I I and, and if it does it, it's like, it almost feels like what
- 21:45it would affect more is people might be gravitating more toward
- 21:51basketball and football cards if those games are actually on the
- 21:55field. I, I just don't, I don't, I
- 22:00don't see it cratering the market.
- 22:05I don't see it as something like, oh, well, there's a
- 22:08shutdown. So now nobody's going to go by
- 22:11the tops Chrome release. I don't think that's going to
- 22:15happen. I mean, heck, look at Pokémon
- 22:20cards, those those don't slow down when Pikachu has a bad
- 22:26year. And it it feels like cards are
- 22:31kind of on a trajectory unless somebody underperforms.
- 22:39And if nobody's performing, Aaron Judge won't get hurt.
- 22:45Aaron Judge won't go over 63 if they're not playing.
- 22:54So I don't really think I don't know how much it would affect
- 22:57it. You guys down below in the
- 22:59comments tell me what you think. I don't.
- 23:04I don't know how much it'll affect it.
- 23:07I think people are buying cards because of who they like and
- 23:16what they think they might become.
- 23:20I don't, I just don't. Honestly I don't think it will
- 23:23affect things that much unless it was like the entire year is
- 23:28lost. Then maybe more than anything
- 23:31what it could do is it could prevent certain players from
- 23:35reaching certain milestones. Like will Judge not reach 600
- 23:41home runs because he missed, you know, 2/3 of a season or an
- 23:46entire season, something like that?
- 23:50Also, a lot of those players at the end of their career, you
- 23:54know, will they just have to retire and not hit some of those
- 23:59final milestones? I don't know.
- 24:02I, I don't, I don't think that it would do a ton, but maybe I'm
- 24:06crazy. And if I'm crazy, tell me down
- 24:09below. If I'm not crazy, tell me down
- 24:12below. I'm I'm more interested on what
- 24:16all of you think on this than what I think is I I don't really
- 24:20think it's a big deal. I mean, it's a big deal, but I
- 24:24don't think it's a big deal for the modern card market.
- 24:28If the season loses 40 games, I don't I don't think that's going
- 24:33to like shut down cards. This one says, Hi, Greg, Just a
- 24:40question that came to mind the other day.
- 24:42I hope it hadn't been asked before.
- 24:45What are your thoughts on nature versus nurture when it comes to
- 24:50being a collector? Do you think the act of
- 24:53collecting as a hobby is something that we have to see to
- 24:57be drawn towards or is it just in our genes?
- 25:01Thank you for your thoughts and all you do for the community.
- 25:07I definitely think it's some of each.
- 25:10I definitely think that there's some nature and there's some
- 25:16nurture. I think that how people are
- 25:20wired is different. I think those of us that are a
- 25:23little bit on the OCD side of the spectrum where we like
- 25:28things in a particular way, where we like things stored in a
- 25:32particular way, where we're very tidy and organized.
- 25:36I do think those of us like that tend to be wired toward
- 25:40collecting things and storing things and organizing things,
- 25:45which are all card related. But I also think how we're
- 25:51raised has something to do with it.
- 25:55So, for example, some of us are raised in a home where it's
- 26:03important to care for our items. Like you, you know, you take
- 26:09care of your stuff. You take your shoes off when you
- 26:14come in the house so that it doesn't beat up the house.
- 26:18For the record, my family is not like that.
- 26:22Your car. Do you get your car washed?
- 26:26Do you wash it yourself? Do you vacuum it out?
- 26:28Do you keep it nice? Or are there piles and piles and
- 26:32piles of fast food wrappers and half eaten French fries all over
- 26:38the place? I think people that are taught
- 26:43from a young age to take care of your stuff, to take care of your
- 26:48room, like, like handwriting, you know, like I have students
- 26:55that will turn in work where I can't even read it.
- 26:58They will staple papers together.
- 27:01And they're not lined up in the corner.
- 27:03They're not lined up in the corner.
- 27:06Like, instead of like it being, you know, right on the edge,
- 27:12they'll staple something like this.
- 27:14They'll just staple it. Oh my gosh, that's crazy.
- 27:25The kid who staples this, I don't think that kids going to
- 27:32be a card collector. The kid who staples this, that's
- 27:39card collector material, sorry. So I think how we're wired is
- 27:54definitely part of it, but how we're raised, were you raised
- 28:00for your room had to be cleaned, where your work had to be neat,
- 28:06where you didn't leave any dishes in the sink ever?
- 28:11As soon as you used to dish you, you claimed it and you put it in
- 28:14the dishwasher. I think that's part of it.
- 28:19I think that's part of it, how you were raised, but I also
- 28:23think it's how you're wired. I have two girls.
- 28:29One is very neat and organized, 1 is very not neat and
- 28:34organized. Despite our attempts to try to
- 28:41have both of them be neat and organized, it's just not
- 28:44happening. I think it's both.
- 28:49I don't think it's one over the other.
- 28:52I think it's both. And this one says I really
- 28:57appreciate the content. I have been buying 1950s Hall of
- 29:02Fame baseball cards and focusing on buying rookie Hall of Fame
- 29:06baseball cards from the 1950s, sixties and 70s.
- 29:11Some of them are graded but a lot of them are not.
- 29:15You mentioned Greg Morris, I did get a good deal on some vintage
- 29:19draw hall of Farmers. Are you saying if my plan is to
- 29:24hold the cards to not invest in grading?
- 29:28Also, I recently bought a Tyler Shoe rookie Otto for $17.00
- 29:34before he was a starter. Now it's selling for 150, would
- 29:39it be worth grading that one since A10 would 10 to 20 X what
- 29:44I paid for it? I've definitely lost money on
- 29:47grading vintage cards but have done well on grading modern.
- 29:53Do you think it's a good investment strategy to buy all
- 29:57the rookie card Hall of farmers from 1950s to 1960's?
- 30:02The ones I have now are Monty Irvin, Nellie Fox, Don Drysdale,
- 30:08Don Sutton, Jim Cot, Paul Molitor, Roger Maris, even
- 30:13though he's not in the Hall of Fame, Are the Hall of farmers
- 30:17that don't get as much love a good investment because they are
- 30:21cheaper. I'm working on getting a bigger
- 30:24name but can't afford a Mickey Mantle card or Willie Mays right
- 30:29now. So let's use an analogy.
- 30:34Let's use an analogy here. Here's my question.
- 30:39What if I told you in my garage I had a beautiful, and I mean
- 30:46beautiful 1997 Ford Taurus sedan?
- 30:54It had under 100 miles on it. It was pristine.
- 31:00It had been under a cover. And I mean, this thing is
- 31:04Immaculate, absolutely Immaculate.
- 31:11Would you buy that car for 60 seventy, $80,000?
- 31:17Let's just say new. It was, you know, 25,000.
- 31:23I mean, it's a Mac. It's the nicest one in the world
- 31:29versus Mr. Petty's Trans Am versus, you know, a 65 Mustang
- 31:43that's Immaculate versus a 2003 beautiful Corvette.
- 31:56The Corvette is always going to be more desirable than the
- 32:01Taurus. It just is.
- 32:06The Corvette is cool. The Corvette will always have
- 32:11high demand. Lots of people would love to
- 32:15have the Corvette. Lots of people would like to
- 32:19have the 67 Mustang. They just would love to have it
- 32:24because it is cool. That doesn't mean that the
- 32:33pristine 97 Ford Taurus isn't pristine.
- 32:38It doesn't mean that the Ford Taurus is a is a bad car, but
- 32:47there are certain things that will always have more demand
- 32:52than other things. At the end of the day, it's
- 32:58about why are you collecting? You mentioned in here a couple
- 33:02of times you use the term investing or strategy.
- 33:08Is it a good investment strategy to buy all the rookie cards of
- 33:15Hall of Farmers from the 50s and 70s?
- 33:18Is it a good investment strategy?
- 33:24I I think there are better investment strategies.
- 33:28Investment strategies. Now, if what you like are
- 33:35collecting Hall of Fame rookie cards, that's what you should
- 33:40do. But if you're asking me, will
- 33:45the value of all of those Hall of Fame rookie cards go up the
- 33:51same as other things, I would say no.
- 33:57There are some people who want to have a Fergie Jenkins rookie
- 34:02card or a Don Sutton rookie card or a Billy Williams rookie card
- 34:08or a, you know, insert the name of the player from that era.
- 34:15And there are other people who don't.
- 34:18There are more people who want a 53 tops mantle than want a 1960
- 34:26Tops Gymkop. I think the value of the 53 tops
- 34:32mantle will go up more in percentage and dollars than the
- 34:41Don Sutton rookie card over the same period of time.
- 34:47So is it a good investment strategy?
- 34:50I think there will always be some demand for Hall of Fame
- 34:56rookie cards, but I believe there will be more demand for
- 35:03the Corvette than the Ford Taurus.
- 35:08Again, Fergie Jenkins, very, very good player.
- 35:15Ted Simmons, very good player. We could go down the list, but
- 35:22they're they're not going to draw the universal long time
- 35:29love and demand and admiration of a Hank Aaron rookie card or a
- 35:38Babe Ruth Goudy card or AT2O6 Ty Cobb.
- 35:44They're just not. So first of all, I would never
- 35:50give somebody investment advice. And for me, collecting is not
- 35:57completely a hobby because we're talking about a good amount of
- 36:00money at times. Like I want to buy things that I
- 36:04like, but also that I think I won't lose money on.
- 36:11And the things I want to buy sooner rather than later are the
- 36:15things that I think are going to go up sooner rather than later
- 36:20so that I could buy them now before they become unaffordable.
- 36:25So if you're looking at investing again, this is not an
- 36:33investment channel. I don't give invested advice,
- 36:38but I think a 53 tops Jackie Robinson is going to do better
- 36:49over the next 20 years in value appreciation.
- 36:54Then Fergie Jenkins, Don Sutton, Jim Palmer, Steve Carlton, Joe
- 37:00Morgan, Ted Simmons, Jim Cot and other names like those.
- 37:13Maybe I'm crazy, maybe they're underappreciated.
- 37:19I'm trying to think. I mean, I have a Monty Irvin
- 37:22rookie card. I love the Don Drysdale rookie
- 37:25card. If these are the cards you like,
- 37:29that's again what I think you should buy, assuming you're
- 37:34doing this as a hobby. But if you're doing this as an
- 37:37investment that changes things, The last thing I'll say is, are
- 37:49you saying if my plan is not to hold the cards, to not invest in
- 37:54grading? Grading costs money and instead
- 38:02of grading cards, you could buy more cards?
- 38:07But if I'm not, if when your cards are eventually sold, they
- 38:18will usually, not always usually sell more if they're graded,
- 38:25They'll sell for more if they're graded most of the time, if
- 38:31you're not planning on selling your cards, that's fine.
- 38:35But somebody is going to sell those cards someday and and the
- 38:40question is whether you want to spend money now to get the cards
- 38:48graded so that when they are eventually sold, they are likely
- 38:55to sell for more because they're graded.
- 39:02For me it gets to a point where they're sort of like A at a
- 39:05certain level I grade them. I have a lot of cards that
- 39:11aren't graded. If it's under 50, sixty $70.00,
- 39:16I don't usually grade it because to grade it is like $25 and the
- 39:21card is a $50 card. So I'm spending 50% of the cards
- 39:26value just to get it graded. But if the card is a $500 card
- 39:33and it costs a 35 bucks to get it graded, that's a very small
- 39:39percentage of the value of the card to get it graded.
- 39:44So for me, if you're spending more than about say 10% of what
- 39:52the card is worth to get it graded, I don't know if it, I
- 39:58don't know if it pencils out, I don't know if the added value
- 40:02from having it graded is worth. The amount that it costs to get
- 40:10it graded. So at times I think cards are
- 40:18worth grading and at other times I think cards are not worth
- 40:23grading. And if somebody told me they
- 40:26don't want to spend money on grading because instead they
- 40:28want to spend money on cards, I don't blame you at all.
- 40:33You can buy one touches over on the penny sleever for a pretty
- 40:37reasonable price. I just did the other day myself
- 40:42and you can get and they look, they look great, cards look
- 40:46great and one touches they look great.
- 40:51But when they're eventually sold, they probably won't sell
- 40:59for as much in a one touch than if they're professionally graded
- 41:05by one of the major grading companies.
- 41:09It's not something I could tell you what you should or shouldn't
- 41:12do or what the threshold is. For me, I would say it's about
- 41:1910% of the value of the card. I'm not going to spend $25 to
- 41:28grade a $60.00 card unless it's because getting it graded adds
- 41:36that amount of value to the enjoyment of looking at it and
- 41:40owning it. Then it's worth it.
- 41:45But you're talking investment, so from an investment
- 41:49perspective, I don't think it makes sense to spend $25 to
- 41:55grade a $50 card for me as an investment.
- 42:01But if owning and looking at and admiring a $50 card adds more
- 42:14than $25 in value by grading it, then you should get it graded.
- 42:23That was kind of a long answer. I guess my throat is just
- 42:26completely torched. Later in the week.
- 42:30I will continue to pull the plow.
- 42:32I will continue to push forward. I will have a video later in the
- 42:36week, probably going to be Friday, might be Saturday.
- 42:41It all depends on that. As a teacher, I can tell you, if
- 42:48you don't have your voice, it's like Louis Armstrong not having
- 42:54his trumpet. It's like Kenny G without his
- 42:59sax or clarinet or whatever the heck he plays.
- 43:05It sucks. It's rough.
- 43:08If you have a question for an upcoming episode, don't hesitate
- 43:12to ask it down below in the comments.
