- 0:00Speaker 1: Nick, Hello, thanks for joining us on the Beacon Plumbing
- 0:02Speaker 1: hotline in Seattle.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Yeah, how are you doing, guys? Thank you for having me.
- 0:06Speaker 3: We are well, Thank you, sir.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Okay, just an open ended question on what you saw
- 0:11Speaker 1: at a Dante Fowler last year in his second go
- 0:13Speaker 1: around with the Cowboys.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, last year was just it was kind of a
- 0:18Speaker 2: digression for everybody on that defensive side of the ball.
- 0:21Speaker 2: The secondary wasn't particularly great. The ball was coming out
- 0:24Speaker 2: quick from opposing quarterbacks, so the pass rush didn't even
- 0:27Speaker 2: really get a lot of time to wind up and
- 0:29Speaker 2: get into the backfield. But even with specific guys like
- 0:33Speaker 2: Dante Fowler or Sam Williams or some of the others,
- 0:36Speaker 2: the sack production just wasn't There was the pressure production there. Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 2: and specifically for Dante Fowler, I think if you look
- 0:41Speaker 2: at the pressure numbers, it was one of the best
- 0:44Speaker 2: on the team when it came to know per pass
- 0:47Speaker 2: rush attempt. But nevertheless, getting home was a problem for
- 0:50Speaker 2: the entire defense last year and Dante Fowler certainly suffered
- 0:53Speaker 2: from that.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Was there ever an opportunity for him to come back
- 0:55Speaker 1: or was it almost a clean slate once they traded
- 0:58Speaker 1: I mean they traded Micah Parker, for heaven's sakes. Was
- 1:01Speaker 1: it just a rebuild on the defense that wasn't going
- 1:03Speaker 1: to include Fowler at all?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it was more so about the new defensive coordinator,
- 1:08Speaker 2: Christian Parker, coming in and wanting to bring you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: who he wanted on that defensive side of the ball.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Fowler didn't necessarily fit that. They wanted to get younger
- 1:15Speaker 2: in the pass crush unit, and Fowler, you know, entering
- 1:18Speaker 2: the wrong side of thirty already at thirty one, to
- 1:20Speaker 2: be thirty two when the season starts didn't necessarily fit
- 1:23Speaker 2: that mold. But there was no bad blood between him
- 1:26Speaker 2: and Dallas and specifically enough to be able to come
- 1:28Speaker 2: back for the second stint. But considering how things just
- 1:31Speaker 2: didn't work out on any stretch of the imagination, on
- 1:34Speaker 2: any part of that defense last year, it made sense
- 1:36Speaker 2: to just kind of move on.
- 1:38Speaker 4: You mentioned his pressures are having to pull it up.
- 1:40Speaker 4: You have thirty nine pressures. But to your point about
- 1:42Speaker 4: the Sacs only had what three of them, you say
- 1:44Speaker 4: that's bad luck, declining burst or having to do with
- 1:48Speaker 4: something with that Dallas defense how they were using him
- 1:52Speaker 4: or all three.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it probably is a combination of the three.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You know, I think you saw a more fresh Dante
- 1:59Speaker 2: Fowler Washington the year before, when he was able to
- 2:02Speaker 2: post double digit sachell in the second time in his career,
- 2:05Speaker 2: in my opinion, should have been a Pro Bowl of
- 2:07Speaker 2: that year, but just missed out. He told me at
- 2:10Speaker 2: the end of the season as they were cleaning out
- 2:13Speaker 2: their lockers the dance of the season ended, that he
- 2:15Speaker 2: had been dealing with some injury stuff. A shoulder was
- 2:17Speaker 2: really bothering him throughout the year, but he powered through it.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And so I think he was just more fresh in
- 2:22Speaker 2: previous seasons than what we saw in twenty twenty five.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And then, yeah, like you mentioned the Dallas defense, I mean,
- 2:28Speaker 2: it was just a disaster from organizationally up top with
- 2:32Speaker 2: Matty Reflus all the way down to you know, even
- 2:34Speaker 2: when they were trying to rotate guys in to just
- 2:36Speaker 2: get some playing time. It was a disaster then too.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So it's hard to really blame one guy for anything
- 2:42Speaker 2: that went wrong on the defense last year, even if
- 2:44Speaker 2: that one guy had a bad season. But here in
- 2:47Speaker 2: Dante Fowler's case, that yeah, he was certainly not a
- 2:49Speaker 2: benefactor of that.
- 2:50Speaker 1: This is Nick Harris, the four Worth Star Telegram beat
- 2:53Speaker 1: writer for the Dallas Cowboys, where Dante Fowler played last season.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Fowler this morning agreeing to a one year contract worth
- 3:00Speaker 1: intentionally up to five million dollars to be the seahawks
- 3:02Speaker 1: new veteran edge rusher. Fowler played thirty two percent of
- 3:06Speaker 1: the snaps last year, Nick, Did they use him only
- 3:09Speaker 1: as a third down pass rusher? Those numbers suggest that, Yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So it was weird because you see those numbers and
- 3:15Speaker 2: you would you would think he's more of, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 2: a pass a pass down type of guy, and that's
- 3:20Speaker 2: what they used him in the first time. He was
- 3:22Speaker 2: around in Dallas and in Washington the year prior. But
- 3:25Speaker 2: he started to begin the season and when they when
- 3:27Speaker 2: they traded Micah Parsons, I don't think they had a
- 3:30Speaker 2: clear plan of who was really going to fill those
- 3:32Speaker 2: snaps for that edge rusher room, and so Dante Fowler
- 3:37Speaker 2: got a lot of snaps early in the season. It
- 3:39Speaker 2: didn't quite work out, and so he pretty much got
- 3:41Speaker 2: phased out in the middle of the year, and then
- 3:43Speaker 2: toward the end of the year started to pick up
- 3:44Speaker 2: some more snaps. So it wasn't necessarily like, hey, yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 2: he just played pass downs throughout the year, although this
- 3:49Speaker 2: snapco maybe indicate that it was more of like, hey,
- 3:52Speaker 2: he had a feature role at one point than did
- 3:54Speaker 2: not and then did again. It just kind of speaks
- 3:57Speaker 2: to the disorganization that was that defense last year. But
- 4:00Speaker 2: seeing Dante Fowler in the two seasons that he was
- 4:02Speaker 2: in Dallas before in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three,
- 4:05Speaker 2: and then seeing what he did with Washington in twenty four,
- 4:08Speaker 2: he is best used as a specialized pass down pass rusher.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So if it's a second and long or third down,
- 4:14Speaker 2: get him on the field with fresh legs and he'll
- 4:17Speaker 2: be able to get to the quarterback, pin his ears
- 4:19Speaker 2: back and do so. And I think that's how he's
- 4:20Speaker 2: best to use at this point in his career.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Do you see any rundown run stopping early downs left
- 4:25Speaker 1: to him?
- 4:26Speaker 5: You're implying, no, Yeah, not really.
- 4:30Speaker 2: He did have the tackle for loss production in Washington,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and you know, look, maybe with a better interior defensive
- 4:37Speaker 2: line in Seattle, with guys like Byron Murphy, I really
- 4:40Speaker 2: do think that, you know, he could have an opportunity
- 4:43Speaker 2: to do so. But if I'm aiden dirty and I'm
- 4:45Speaker 2: bringing him in. I'm expecting him to come in and
- 4:48Speaker 2: just be a pass pass rush guy and if he
- 4:50Speaker 2: brings any more then that's just icing on the cake.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Ad And Dirty, of course, is the Seaoffs defensive coordinator
- 4:56Speaker 1: who is the line coach for Dante Fowler and the Cowboys.
- 5:00Speaker 1: He was also the outside linebackers coach and the Falcons
- 5:02Speaker 1: when Fowler played with Atlanta, so he's got a history.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So DOA's DeMarcus Lawrence, the Seahawks defensive end who signed
- 5:09Speaker 1: last year out of eleven years from Dallas.
- 5:11Speaker 5: This is Nick Harras.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Sport Worth Star Telegram beat writer for the Cowboys on
- 5:15Speaker 1: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline on ninety three point three KJR.
- 5:17Speaker 4: With that, as Greg just mentioned aiden coach Fowler before,
- 5:22Speaker 4: how much familiarity do you think will help helped him
- 5:25Speaker 4: succeed in Dallas? Do you think will be that can
- 5:27Speaker 4: transfer to him potentially bouncing back and see not that
- 5:31Speaker 4: he can do what DeMarcus Lawrence did, but maybe you
- 5:33Speaker 4: can just have some more production.
- 5:35Speaker 5: Do you see that as a possibility.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we saw some consistency when when Dirty was his
- 5:40Speaker 2: coach in Atlanta and in Dallas. And you know, I
- 5:43Speaker 2: think also having DeMarcus Lawrence in that locker room will
- 5:45Speaker 2: be big two. Those two connected quite a bit when
- 5:47Speaker 2: they were in Dallas together, and so that that can
- 5:50Speaker 2: certainly help out as well. I think this is what
- 5:53Speaker 2: I saw the news come across this morning. My first
- 5:55Speaker 2: thought was, this is a perfect fit. It's not only
- 5:57Speaker 2: familiarity with you know what aid and dirt he requires
- 6:00Speaker 2: out of his guys, but he's going to have really
- 6:02Speaker 2: good guys around him and a really good pass rush
- 6:05Speaker 2: unit around him, good interior defensive line, a good defense
- 6:07Speaker 2: around him, and I think with good pieces around Dante Fowler,
- 6:11Speaker 2: that's when he is best and he's able to pin
- 6:13Speaker 2: his ears back and really, you know, find some isolated
- 6:15Speaker 2: one on one pass rush opportunities to get to the quarterback.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I don't think this is a wrong answer either way
- 6:20Speaker 4: you go. But looking at this point in his career,
- 6:24Speaker 4: is Fouler someone that you still need to game plan
- 6:27Speaker 4: for or is this more you say, you know what,
- 6:29Speaker 4: a complimentary piece with the defense that's already proven to
- 6:32Speaker 4: be elite, you just add another piece that can help
- 6:35Speaker 4: wreck offenses.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's more so the latter. I don't
- 6:38Speaker 2: think you're going to see you know, teams, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: have to look at Dante Fowler and be like, oh gosh,
- 6:44Speaker 2: we got to face that guy this week. I think
- 6:46Speaker 2: with all those defensive weapons of Seattle has, there's going
- 6:48Speaker 2: to be a lot more at the top of that list.
- 6:50Speaker 2: But hey, you know, in Washington, he had a year
- 6:53Speaker 2: that you know, I consider myself a Dante Fowler fan.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I think he still does have some juice left in
- 6:57Speaker 2: the tank. He surprised me in twenty twenty four with Washington.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So you know, if he's been able to find that
- 7:02Speaker 2: type of production early in the season, then you might
- 7:04Speaker 2: see that reality from opposing teams.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Nick Harris, what are your impressions of Brian Schottenheimer as
- 7:10Speaker 1: a first time head coach the former Seahawks offensive coordinator.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah, he's done a good job of building the culture
- 7:18Speaker 2: first and foremost. I think that was an important piece
- 7:20Speaker 2: that he wanted to establish last year. And you know,
- 7:22Speaker 2: as an offensive play caller, was largely pretty successful last
- 7:26Speaker 2: season up until about the last month of the year,
- 7:29Speaker 2: and four of the final five games they couldn't find
- 7:31Speaker 2: a touchdown in the second half of those games, and
- 7:33Speaker 2: so I think adjustments are probably going to be the
- 7:35Speaker 2: biggest thing that Schottenheimer will have to work on going
- 7:37Speaker 2: in the year two. But you know, you talk to
- 7:39Speaker 2: everybody in the building and there's a lot of trust
- 7:41Speaker 2: in Brian Schottenheimer. The Joneses have put a lot of
- 7:43Speaker 2: trust in Brian Schottenheimer to make key decisions that you know,
- 7:46Speaker 2: other head coaches in the past haven't necessarily had that power,
- 7:49Speaker 2: whether it be a Jason Garrett or a Mike McCarthy,
- 7:52Speaker 2: and Schottenheimer's really done a good job of commanding the room.
- 7:55Speaker 2: And you know, it's a tough balance to be, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 2: a culture, hey on year bro type of head coach,
- 8:01Speaker 2: but still you know, require you know the most out
- 8:04Speaker 2: of your players, and he's able to do that. I
- 8:05Speaker 2: think he finds that balance pretty well. He knows when
- 8:07Speaker 2: to tear into him, he knows when to let off,
- 8:09Speaker 2: and it's by the wins and losses wouldn't necessarily show
- 8:15Speaker 2: it because the defense was just so bad last year,
- 8:18Speaker 2: and now that he has a little bit more control
- 8:20Speaker 2: on that side of the ball, there's a little bit
- 8:21Speaker 2: more confidence that they will have a more successful year
- 8:24Speaker 2: too than the seven nine and one reality that they faced.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Last season.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Nick Harris Fortworth Star Telegram beat writer of the Cowboys
- 8:32Speaker 1: here on ninety three point three KJRFM. We're spoiled out
- 8:35Speaker 1: here in Seattle of the continuity of GMS and the
- 8:39Speaker 1: lack of meddling of ownership that doesn't have anything to say.
- 8:43Speaker 1: They let the football guys do the football stuff. Can
- 8:45Speaker 1: you I've covered the Cowboys and the associated press and
- 8:49Speaker 1: been in the locker room for Jerry Jones's postgame press
- 8:52Speaker 1: conference scrums. Can you describe to people who don't know
- 8:57Speaker 1: the Cowboys dynamic of Jerry Jones and his all compassing
- 9:00Speaker 1: influence as owner and how Brian Schottenheimer deals with that.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's certainly unique. There's no team, I feel like
- 9:08Speaker 2: in professional sports like the Dallas Cowboys because of Jerry Jones.
- 9:12Speaker 2: He's always available. He's always talking, whether it be in
- 9:16Speaker 2: a pre draft press conference, after games, on the radios
- 9:21Speaker 2: on Tuesday mornings, He's always out there getting his message out.
- 9:26Speaker 2: And so, yeah, that's certainly a unique aspect of things.
- 9:29Speaker 2: And you know, the power behind the scenes is quite
- 9:31Speaker 2: fascinating because I, at least from my standpoint before I
- 9:34Speaker 2: started covering this team, I had the impression of, Hey,
- 9:37Speaker 2: whatever Jerry Jones says, goes. It doesn't matter who gets
- 9:39Speaker 2: in his way. He's going to be the one to
- 9:40Speaker 2: make a decision. And you know, as I cover the team,
- 9:43Speaker 2: I got to know more people behind the scenes and
- 9:45Speaker 2: see how things work. It's fascinating because he more so
- 9:48Speaker 2: puts a lot of trust in the voices around him.
- 9:52Speaker 2: So whether it be a Brian Schottenheimer or their vice
- 9:55Speaker 2: president of player personnel, Will McLay or even Stephen Jones
- 9:58Speaker 2: has taken on a big voice in that room as well.
- 10:00Speaker 2: They have some other guys in that front office too.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Whenever there's a big decision that has to be made,
- 10:04Speaker 2: he resorts to those voices, and if those voices vote
- 10:07Speaker 2: him off of a certain decision, then he'll ride with it.
- 10:11Speaker 2: And so, you know, I think that's a fascinating, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 2: power dynamic that they've built, specifically over the course of
- 10:16Speaker 2: the last decade since McLay has had a big voice
- 10:19Speaker 2: in their personnel decisions. And yeah, it's it's certainly unique
- 10:22Speaker 2: and it's a wild team to cover. Never a dull
- 10:25Speaker 2: day around.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Here, Yes, that's for sure. At the Star in Plano, Texas.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Nick Harris fort Worth Star Telegram, thank you, sir, sister
- 10:33Speaker 1: publication of mine.
- 10:34Speaker 5: McClatchy.
- 10:34Speaker 1: If you ever need anything Seahawks, please give me a ring.
- 10:37Speaker 1: The News Tribune. Thank you, sir.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I appreciate it, My McLatchy brother, and you'll have a
- 10:41Speaker 2: good one.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Yeah, you as well.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Nick Nick Harris from Fort Worth, Texas Fort Worth Star
- 10:46Speaker 1: Telegram Cowboys beat writers telling us, you look at the
- 10:49Speaker 1: numbers of thirty two percent of snaps last year and
- 10:52Speaker 1: you think, okay. Dante Fowler, aged thirty one, was a
- 10:55Speaker 1: past rus specialist.
- 10:56Speaker 5: He said no.
- 10:57Speaker 1: He said Fowler was in every down linebacker art at
- 11:00Speaker 1: the beginning of the season, and then once they traded
- 11:03Speaker 1: Michael Parsons, they went to younger pass rushers and he
- 11:07Speaker 1: was bosona, non grato. What was the words he used.
- 11:10Speaker 1: He said he was pretty much phased out. Dante Foller
- 11:13Speaker 1: was in the middle of the season, and by season's
- 11:15Speaker 1: end he was starting to get playing time again. He
- 11:17Speaker 1: ended up with only three sacks in seventeen games. Nick
- 11:21Speaker 1: Harris telling us that Fowler told him at season's end
- 11:24Speaker 1: that he was bothered all season by a shoulder injury
- 11:28Speaker 1: and twenty twenty four, as Nick Harris alluded to a
- 11:32Speaker 1: career year ten and a half sacks for dan Quinn's
- 11:34Speaker 1: commanders fourteen tackles for losses. But the question of every
- 11:39Speaker 1: down or run stopping versus pass ros specialists is but
- 11:42Speaker 1: pertinent one, Chris, because they still haven't filled if Fowler
- 11:46Speaker 1: is only a pass rusher at age thirty two, they
- 11:49Speaker 1: still and filled the boy. Mafe Roll Mafay was an
- 11:53Speaker 1: early down guy and by the end, actually he started
- 11:55Speaker 1: as an every down linebacker in the edge opposite Derek
- 11:58Speaker 1: Hall when he got drafted. By the end, with the
- 12:00Speaker 1: solid sub packages that Mike McDonald used, Mafay was often
- 12:04Speaker 1: coming off the field in passing situation. So they haven't
- 12:08Speaker 1: found to this signing to me, suggests they still haven't
- 12:12Speaker 1: got an answer to early down run stopping outside linebacker
- 12:15Speaker 1: edge rusher. Could it be Jared Ivy who was an
- 12:19Speaker 1: undrafted rookie surprise guy, a very very impressive player in
- 12:23Speaker 1: training camp last year. Here's the thing on Ivy, Chris,
- 12:26Speaker 1: I think we may have mentioned it. He spent all
- 12:29Speaker 1: of last season on the active roster. All they didn't
- 12:32Speaker 1: put him subject to waivers to put him on the
- 12:35Speaker 1: practice squad. They feared a team would either sign him
- 12:38Speaker 1: in waivers or sign him to the active roster off
- 12:41Speaker 1: the practice squad during so they kept him on the
- 12:43Speaker 1: active roster. He didn't play at all. He would be
- 12:46Speaker 1: an active for game days, yet he stayed on the roster.
- 12:48Speaker 1: That's how much they thought of him. And Mike McDonald
- 12:51Speaker 1: has mentioned Jared Ivy, the undrafted rookie free agent last year,
- 12:55Speaker 1: as someone there looking to take a big step. Connor
- 12:57Speaker 1: O'Toole is another one who has played edge outside linebacker
- 13:01Speaker 1: who they were looking at, who played special teams for
- 13:03Speaker 1: the team last year. But Chris, I don't think this
- 13:06Speaker 1: signing of Fowler, it doesn't sound like this is going
- 13:09Speaker 1: to be in every down run stopping. It's gonna be
- 13:11Speaker 1: a specialist pass rushing.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's great, But Mike McDonald loves guys that
- 13:16Speaker 4: can do two things, stop that run and get after
- 13:19Speaker 4: the quarterback. So I think you're I think you're leaning
- 13:22Speaker 4: onto something with Jared Ivy being Okay, you can earn
- 13:26Speaker 4: it here. Yeah, we're bringing in this season veteran, but
- 13:29Speaker 4: if he ends up doing the role, fine, he will
- 13:31Speaker 4: get the snaps. But we're banking on you being able
- 13:33Speaker 4: to do both, and you're gonna get most of the
- 13:35Speaker 4: snap counts and on third downs, we will send in
- 13:38Speaker 4: Dante Fowler and you're tending new Woesu and those guys
- 13:41Speaker 4: to go try to get to the quarterback. But I
- 13:42Speaker 4: think that's gonna be interesting, especially through training camp, how
- 13:46Speaker 4: that performance has looked at.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Is he getting to the quarterback preseason? Does he have
- 13:49Speaker 5: any sacks?
- 13:50Speaker 4: Because I think he'll get a lot of burn just
- 13:52Speaker 4: based on that signing, Like, yeah, we're bringing in this veteran,
- 13:55Speaker 4: but there's a reason why we kind of reshrated you
- 13:58Speaker 4: last season in terms of seeing the field. But now
- 14:01Speaker 4: this is your opportunity, especially with what's his name, Boye
- 14:04Speaker 4: Mafey now signing with the Bengals, So its opportunity for
- 14:07Speaker 4: the young guy to step up. And because they didn't
- 14:09Speaker 4: draft anyone, so you were wondering, Okay, who are they
- 14:12Speaker 4: gonna get. They gotta get someone because the edge is
- 14:14Speaker 4: still kind of iffy. But I think now this veteran
- 14:18Speaker 4: presence doesn't it's not force full. It's more so like
- 14:23Speaker 4: here's a guy ahead of you, but you have a
- 14:25Speaker 4: chance to win out versus ye're we're not gonna get anybody,
- 14:28Speaker 4: so it's you or nothing.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Good good point on Nuosu because now McDonald with Fowler
- 14:33Speaker 1: could put Fowler, Duosu, DeMarcus Lawrence, Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy
- 14:38Speaker 1: as your front on past rush and then have Nick
- 14:41Speaker 1: even Worry to blitz or Devin Witherspoon to blitz.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Again.
- 14:46Speaker 1: We talk a lot about multiplicity and that with Mike
- 14:48Speaker 1: McDonald's sets, but now you have veteran edge rushers who
- 14:53Speaker 1: can come in to be a specialized role. Nuosu and
- 14:56Speaker 1: Fowler potentially be your edge guys. And oh, by the way,
- 14:59Speaker 1: Derek calls still on the team, and he's in a
- 15:00Speaker 1: contract year. He's gonna be motivated to get numbers, to
- 15:04Speaker 1: get paid.
- 15:04Speaker 4: He saw his friend boye go out there and get
- 15:08Speaker 4: if he can get twenty and let me get five
- 15:11Speaker 4: sacks this season, so you can bet the incentive for
- 15:15Speaker 4: him to be even better this year just went up.
- 15:17Speaker 4: So this defense is gonna be hungry. You got guys
- 15:19Speaker 4: that are like, oh, this contract year. As you mentioned
- 15:22Speaker 4: Mike Morris who also plays around. He is he plays
- 15:26Speaker 4: anywhere minver Donald and says, hey, go out and get him.
- 15:28Speaker 4: He's gonna be looking forward to some opportunities right behind
- 15:31Speaker 4: Leonard Williams. So this D line is is looking strong,
- 15:35Speaker 4: but there are a few question marks with Jared Ivy.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Obviously Connor O'Toole. You're wondering if those dudes are ready
- 15:41Speaker 4: for this opportunity to get more snaps and more repetitions,
- 15:43Speaker 4: because I remember the whole conversation about Byron Murphy sixteenth
- 15:46Speaker 4: pick few years back. He doesn't get that many snaps. Man,
- 15:49Speaker 4: not to mention he missed an entire month with that
- 15:51Speaker 4: hamstring injury. But now you're seeing with the snaps that
- 15:54Speaker 4: he's gotten, he's been dominant, beating double teams with his signature,
- 15:58Speaker 4: getting on one knee and separation and getting after the
- 16:01Speaker 4: quarterback and stuffing the run.
- 16:03Speaker 5: He has been gold.
- 16:04Speaker 4: So maybe this opportunity for a Jared Ivy to show
- 16:07Speaker 4: us how good and quick he is off the edge
- 16:09Speaker 4: or his power, and then obviously with Connor or'toole, can
- 16:12Speaker 4: he show us some tools in the toolbox that can
- 16:14Speaker 4: get after the quarterback and stop the run. Something that
- 16:17Speaker 4: Mike McDonald loves from his edge guys is to be
- 16:19Speaker 4: able to do two things, not just be not just
- 16:22Speaker 4: be one dimensionalized. Oh yeah, he just get to the quarterback.
- 16:24Speaker 4: That's not where you're not gonna be on the Seahawks
- 16:26Speaker 4: roster much long, for long. If that's all you can do,
- 16:29Speaker 4: you gotta be able to get to the quarterback and
- 16:31Speaker 4: stop the run.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Four nine four five one that the Koma Dodge text line.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You can tell us what you are. You excited, but
- 16:36Speaker 1: Dante Fowler or the Seahawks edge rushing problem solved, void solved.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I don't have problem, but they have a depth need
- 16:44Speaker 1: after not drafting one four nine four five on your
- 16:46Speaker 1: reaction to that, we'll read back your text next. There
- 16:49Speaker 1: are a lot lot capitalized responses too, from parents, from umpires, referees,
- 16:56Speaker 1: from coaches. I'm hearing from active high school coaches in
- 17:00Speaker 1: the Puget Sound that are telling us it's driving them out.
- 17:03Speaker 5: That's next.
- 17:04Speaker 1: On ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back, Greg Bell,
- 17:12Speaker 1: Christopher Ky with you on ninety three point three KJRFM
- 17:15Speaker 1: on a foggy morning in Seattle, Hope, it's a great
- 17:18Speaker 1: Tuesday wherever you might be listening in the iHeartRadio app
- 17:21Speaker 1: or ninety three KJER dot com. We have had a
- 17:23Speaker 1: ongoing discussion this morning about youth sports, the entitlement of
- 17:27Speaker 1: parents driving coaches, very qualified, very long time coaches out
- 17:31Speaker 1: of the business and the trickle down effects of that. Chris,
- 17:36Speaker 1: we have had topics that have gotten a lot of
- 17:39Speaker 1: texts since we restarted this show a couple few weeks ago,
- 17:42Speaker 1: but none like this. This is the most text messages
- 17:46Speaker 1: on one subject we've gotten, maybe since even the twenty
- 17:49Speaker 1: twenty four iteration.
- 17:51Speaker 4: We had some food things that went crazy. Food always wins.
- 17:54Speaker 4: But this is important for us.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Stop.
- 17:56Speaker 4: A lot of people that are listening have kids or
- 18:00Speaker 4: people that have it's you can relate to it. Everyone
- 18:03Speaker 4: understands is we were all kids at once, as you
- 18:05Speaker 4: ask me. But yeah, let's get going with it, all right.
- 18:09Speaker 4: This is from the three six. So the parents don't
- 18:11Speaker 4: want coaches to coach their kids hard, and that is
- 18:14Speaker 4: part of the issue.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, that was my issue.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Makes sense yelling at my child.
- 18:23Speaker 3: First time their kid had ever been corrected in their lives.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Some of them, Yeah, that's that's a problem. That's huge
- 18:28Speaker 4: if you've never been. Yeah, let's continue because, like you said,
- 18:32Speaker 4: we got a bunch from the four two five. August
- 18:35Speaker 4: is the worst for travel baseball, as all the big
- 18:36Speaker 4: teams in the area are recruiting off each other's rosters.
- 18:40Speaker 4: It's another thing stilling kids and players.
- 18:43Speaker 5: That's not cool. From the five oh five, Greg, where
- 18:47Speaker 5: is that.
- 18:47Speaker 3: At Man Alabama? That's just a guess.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Parents should have no say in athletics. They don't realize
- 18:55Speaker 4: that it's so unlikely their children will make it to
- 18:56Speaker 4: the collegiate level or even the pros. I don't want
- 18:59Speaker 4: to eliminate them, but there has to be a level
- 19:02Speaker 4: of understanding between parents and coaches, I think, and that
- 19:05Speaker 4: just I mean, that's just common sense. If I give
- 19:08Speaker 4: Greg my child to coach, I'm not gonna go to
- 19:10Speaker 4: Greg and be like, yo, I need to have my
- 19:12Speaker 4: son doing A or daughter doing a B and c
- 19:14Speaker 4: Greg's coaching.
- 19:15Speaker 5: He has it if he had. If Greg has something
- 19:17Speaker 5: for me, he'll let me know.
- 19:18Speaker 4: How does that sound. I think that's where it should be.
- 19:20Speaker 4: Trust the coaches to do their part.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Parents, parents, coaches, coach. Hello from New Mexico. By the way,
- 19:27Speaker 3: thanks for the text.
- 19:29Speaker 4: A lot of parents from the four to two five
- 19:30Speaker 4: think that their kids are superstars and they are going
- 19:32Speaker 4: to be pros. Well, most of them will never even
- 19:34Speaker 4: get close. It's sad to see parents doing this with
- 19:36Speaker 4: their kids. And that was Michael Bealey's point. It's just
- 19:39Speaker 4: and you can do that for each sport. Obviously, the
- 19:41Speaker 4: windows bigger in certain sports like soccer or give you
- 19:44Speaker 4: another sport word making it professionals much bigger window than
- 19:49Speaker 4: NHL or MLB soccer the only one that's a lot bigger,
- 19:53Speaker 4: or actually baseball is a pretty big windows so.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Well, they get drafted out of high school in baseball
- 20:00Speaker 1: the four to two five. Our daughter is in eighth grade.
- 20:03Speaker 1: She plays club soccer and school track. My wife and
- 20:06Speaker 1: I have often gotten home after games and meets over
- 20:08Speaker 1: the years that have had the conversations on who do
- 20:11Speaker 1: these parents think they are? Their kids will never be college,
- 20:14Speaker 1: let alone pro, and they act as if they will.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I think John Smoltz talked about this, along with having
- 20:21Speaker 1: your kids play multiple sports, which is another issue leading
- 20:25Speaker 1: to this type of thinking. That's another point, the specialization
- 20:29Speaker 1: of kids. You talk to pro and mainly pro but
- 20:32Speaker 1: some college coaches too, They rather have players play multiple sports.
- 20:37Speaker 1: But the revenue driven youth sports industry doesn't want that.
- 20:41Speaker 1: They want your kid to funnel all your parents' dollars
- 20:45Speaker 1: into that sport so that those coaches can get paid
- 20:47Speaker 1: and those club directors can get paid, and you play
- 20:51Speaker 1: all around au basketball, and you play all around summer leagues,
- 20:55Speaker 1: spring league baseball, and fall ball.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Play sports. Man.
- 21:02Speaker 5: I played four sports, you played three.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah, play sports your kid try everything.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:09Speaker 4: And if you like something, as you get older, you
- 21:12Speaker 4: can train your focus into something that you enjoy more.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Pete Carroll used to say he wanted players. He wanted
- 21:18Speaker 1: football players who've been at the foul line with one
- 21:21Speaker 1: second left in a basketball game.
- 21:23Speaker 5: He wanted that experience.
- 21:24Speaker 1: He wanted a baseball player who had the dexterity in
- 21:27Speaker 1: the hand eye coordination and who could, with bases loaded,
- 21:31Speaker 1: two out in the bottom of the ninth, face a
- 21:33Speaker 1: pitch and perform.
- 21:34Speaker 5: He wanted those experiences.
- 21:36Speaker 4: That's true from the three to six oh limit comes
- 21:39Speaker 4: from parents who think that they should have been pros
- 21:41Speaker 4: in sports and was ruined because the high school had
- 21:46Speaker 4: a better player. You see at all the time, and
- 21:48Speaker 4: it's actually very sickning. This is coming from a high
- 21:51Speaker 4: school coach.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Three to six ozh.
- 21:54Speaker 1: My daughter's basketball coach in small town in North Dakota
- 21:57Speaker 1: just finished third place in the state championship Class B
- 22:00Speaker 1: Coach of the Year in that state. Coach there for
- 22:02Speaker 1: years had to leave for his sanity after a quote
- 22:07Speaker 1: star player transferred in the vile things her mom would
- 22:10Speaker 1: text the coach and behind the scenes messages to turn
- 22:12Speaker 1: other parents against him were absolutely unbelievable, very unfortunate, as
- 22:17Speaker 1: he really was a great coach and the girls loved
- 22:19Speaker 1: playing for him. Yeah, who's it about? Is about the
- 22:22Speaker 1: players who loved their coach. Was about the parents who
- 22:25Speaker 1: have an agenda against the coach or agenda for their child,
- 22:28Speaker 1: an outside often and a realistic agenda. My daughter is
- 22:32Speaker 1: two oh six. My daughter did junior tennis the way.
- 22:35Speaker 1: The main focus was be at a Division one program.
- 22:37Speaker 1: What nobody ever talked about was with that there are
- 22:40Speaker 1: almost no full scholarships in that, as you say, as
- 22:43Speaker 1: a college game dominated by foreign players.
- 22:45Speaker 5: But an even bigger.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Tennis is big in that too foreign recruits.
- 22:49Speaker 1: But an even bigger subject that nobody talked about was
- 22:52Speaker 1: it even if you played D one, you would not
- 22:57Speaker 1: be able to choose a difficult major the sciences because
- 23:01Speaker 1: of time demands. Thus playing a Division one was basically
- 23:04Speaker 1: a path to a career in coaching. Great if that's
- 23:07Speaker 1: your goal, but it can be a disappointment if your
- 23:09Speaker 1: goals are different vocations. Our daughter opted for a D
- 23:12Speaker 1: three at Swarthmore for academics. Lots of kids do that
- 23:17Speaker 1: use sports to get academic elite D three schools. Yes,
- 23:21Speaker 1: my son did that. My daughter is doing that right now.
- 23:25Speaker 1: My daughter is a D three rower at the Coast
- 23:27Speaker 1: Guard Academy. She didn't go to Coast Guard Academy because
- 23:30Speaker 1: of athletics. My son ended up playing. He was signed
- 23:34Speaker 1: a D two letter of intent back when they gave
- 23:37Speaker 1: scholarships at Division two soccer and then went to Division
- 23:41Speaker 1: three because he wanted a more rounded educational and social
- 23:46Speaker 1: life experience. They were doing at Division two six am practices,
- 23:51Speaker 1: off season practice, six am captains practices, spring league for soccer,
- 23:56Speaker 1: travel on a Tuesday for a game in Texas.
- 24:07Speaker 4: From the two six I coach baseball for twelve years
- 24:10Speaker 4: between two schools, the parents dumping thousands of dollars and
- 24:14Speaker 4: select ball and personal instruction with the hope of a
- 24:18Speaker 4: Division one Division two scholarship. When that dream evaporates because
- 24:21Speaker 4: the kid isn't very good despite all the money invested,
- 24:25Speaker 4: guess where they come.
- 24:26Speaker 5: To blame the coach.
- 24:27Speaker 3: That's a good point too.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Well.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Another thing is, yes, parents, you need to have a
- 24:31Speaker 4: serious conversation with your youth with your child, like, yo,
- 24:36Speaker 4: the chances of you doing this are slim to none.
- 24:38Speaker 4: You need to be the best, if not one of
- 24:41Speaker 4: the best. If you're gonna get a D one scholarship,
- 24:43Speaker 4: you can't be four third fiddle. You have to be
- 24:46Speaker 4: the person, the girl, the guy. So if you're not
- 24:49Speaker 4: being honest with your child, then yeah, the expectation is
- 24:52Speaker 4: gonna fall to then the parent, who then now blames
- 24:55Speaker 4: the coach, But in all actuality, is actually the parent
- 24:58Speaker 4: not being honest with their kid about how to have
- 25:00Speaker 4: that conversation, like, Hey, if you want to be this,
- 25:02Speaker 4: you're gonna have to be tier one.
- 25:04Speaker 5: You can't be tier two, three, six zero.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Not trying to be too argumentative, but if you say
- 25:10Speaker 1: coaches should coach and parents should parent, then maybe trying
- 25:13Speaker 1: to build character is something the parents should be focusing on.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Hell yeah, but it's not happening. Yeah it should, but
- 25:22Speaker 1: parents aren't teaching. They parents are afraid to correct their students,
- 25:26Speaker 1: their kids. They don't want to the accountability of cleaning
- 25:30Speaker 1: your own room, of getting somewhere on time. The first
- 25:34Speaker 1: day I coached varsity sports, varsity baseball, I had a
- 25:38Speaker 1: player we had we had two rules, but one rule.
- 25:41Speaker 1: The main rule was beyond time period. We started practice
- 25:46Speaker 1: twenty minutes after school ended, and the school was across
- 25:48Speaker 1: the street from the practice field.
- 25:50Speaker 5: You could walk backwards or crawl and get.
- 25:52Speaker 1: There on time if you just tried right twenty minutes,
- 25:55Speaker 1: unless you had something after school and they tell me
- 25:57Speaker 1: and text me, okay, fine, but by and large you're
- 26:00Speaker 1: there on time because you got twenty minutes. First day
- 26:03Speaker 1: of practice, first year I was coaching kid walks up
- 26:06Speaker 1: to practice ten minutes late.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Walks.
- 26:09Speaker 1: First of all, in life, if you're late, we all
- 26:11Speaker 1: know you should probably start running when you're late to
- 26:13Speaker 1: show you give a darn walks up to practice, Hey,
- 26:16Speaker 1: what's up?
- 26:18Speaker 3: We ran for ninety minutes there, I got you.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Cut him? I couldn't cut him.
- 26:22Speaker 3: I wanted to.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I couldn't cut him, I asked, So we ran for
- 26:27Speaker 1: ninety minutes the first practice. The entire team, why they
- 26:30Speaker 1: do that? I wanted the team to clean him up.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I wanted the team to be mad that they were
- 26:36Speaker 1: bent over wanting to throw up because of a guy
- 26:38Speaker 1: who just wandered on to practice field late. Why has
- 26:42Speaker 1: that accountability falling to me? For sixteen seventeen year How
- 26:45Speaker 1: do those kids be sixteen seventeen years old to get
- 26:47Speaker 1: to that point.
- 26:48Speaker 4: That's the issue, being at home, not being held accountable
- 26:51Speaker 4: for anything anything.
- 26:55Speaker 5: Where's my dinner, where's my video games?
- 26:58Speaker 3: I mean, I'm brought brushing here, but she is.
- 27:02Speaker 4: From the eight to four to three shout out to
- 27:04Speaker 4: my dad for never pressuring me in any sport. I
- 27:07Speaker 4: chose good, always had fun and competed. That's what it's about.
- 27:11Speaker 4: And if you happen to be really good that can
- 27:14Speaker 4: come to you. That will be there for you, but
- 27:16Speaker 4: you have to also want it. It can't be Greg saying, oh,
- 27:19Speaker 4: I want my daughter to go row, but I only
- 27:21Speaker 4: want her to do it, and she's like, yeah, but
- 27:23Speaker 4: I want to go do this. That's not what it's about.
- 27:26Speaker 4: You should allow your child to dictate what they want
- 27:28Speaker 4: to do, and if they become really good at it
- 27:30Speaker 4: and they want to focus more on it, they can
- 27:32Speaker 4: come to you and have that discussion and you guys.
- 27:33Speaker 5: Can go forward with it. But it shouldn't be.
- 27:37Speaker 4: The opposite what you're seeing a lot of in all
- 27:40Speaker 4: sports across America for youth.
- 27:43Speaker 1: One from the two of six who said his son
- 27:45Speaker 1: pitched on the us A national team at the LBC
- 27:49Speaker 1: Latin American Baseball Classic in the Dominican Republic and was anyway,
- 27:56Speaker 1: there's a long backstory to that. But what he saw
- 28:00Speaker 1: pair of the teams in Latin America is that quote,
- 28:02Speaker 1: these club teams are ruining high school sports in America
- 28:05Speaker 1: for everybody involved, and the parents pay the money for
- 28:08Speaker 1: the club teams. Yes, total entitlement. Great topic, glad you're
- 28:12Speaker 1: talking about it. Last one for me from the two
- 28:16Speaker 1: five three. Let's not just put all of this on
- 28:18Speaker 1: the parents. Some coaches are also the problem.
- 28:21Speaker 4: My child wasn't allowed to play on his high school
- 28:24Speaker 4: team golf team because we weren't part of the local
- 28:27Speaker 4: country club. Kent went high school in Meridian Valley Country Club.
- 28:30Speaker 4: This wasn't a parent thing. This is a clear school
- 28:33Speaker 4: and coaching, absolutely right. But the main topic of it
- 28:37Speaker 4: today his parents taking advantage. Not to discredit what you're
- 28:41Speaker 4: talking about, though, because that's that's very important.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Two oh six Sorry, two oh six youth sports make
- 28:47Speaker 1: me sick and discussed it. I no longer coach youth
- 28:50Speaker 1: sports because of the parents. The issues all started when
- 28:53Speaker 1: junior high and middle schools stop their sports programs. This
- 28:57Speaker 1: allowed select and premier leagues to grab a hold of
- 28:59Speaker 1: the youth. The amount of money they charge has changed
- 29:02Speaker 1: the way parents think about sports. This leads parents into
- 29:05Speaker 1: dumping money into private coaching and training. They tell the
- 29:08Speaker 1: parents to lead them to getting college scholarships. The parents
- 29:11Speaker 1: are now entitled in their own minds use sports are destroyed.
- 29:15Speaker 1: It is very sad. It's a good summation of that dynamic.
- 29:21Speaker 1: The three to six oh I had a parent asked
- 29:23Speaker 1: for a meeting with my athletic directors as a coach
- 29:27Speaker 1: in a school in the area. He was mad that
- 29:30Speaker 1: I didn't consult as kid after a match. I found
- 29:39Speaker 1: out later from talking to my assistant that the kid
- 29:41Speaker 1: was upset. He was trying to get me fired so
- 29:44Speaker 1: they could The parents could then take over with a
- 29:46Speaker 1: coach they wanted, something none of the players wanted to do.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Once again the parents getting involved. It was just what
- 29:52Speaker 1: the whole story started with with the gig Harbor girls
- 29:55Speaker 1: High school coach with you talked about with John Manley.
- 29:57Speaker 1: If you missed that conversation about the girls basketball coach
- 30:00Speaker 1: went nineteen and six and was one point from making
- 30:02Speaker 1: the state tournament State finals into the comodome, go to
- 30:06Speaker 1: ninety three KGr dot com or the iHeartRadio app you download,
- 30:10Speaker 1: or interview with John Manley of the News Tribune, who
- 30:12Speaker 1: broke the story last night that that fired coach is
- 30:14Speaker 1: now unfired. Michelle Hackett as back as the girls basketball coach.
- 30:18Speaker 1: After meddling parents didn't get their way, the district overruled
- 30:22Speaker 1: the parents, and now Michelle Hackett is the coach again.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Oh my goodness.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Four two five says you can't sit in the stands
- 30:33Speaker 1: of bleachers anywhere and not hear parents griping.
- 30:36Speaker 3: That's true.
- 30:39Speaker 1: AU travel, ball, soccer, club, tennis, golf, all of it.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Football is somewhat immune, but now they have seven on
- 30:51Speaker 1: seven leagues in the spring, and they have seven on
- 30:54Speaker 1: seven camps that these guys go to. There's another thing
- 30:57Speaker 1: for football. Used to be that football is a little
- 30:59Speaker 1: bit immune of this club stuff. But now football, if
- 31:02Speaker 1: they think they're gonna get a college scholarship, ops, they
- 31:05Speaker 1: will quit the sport they used to play in the spring,
- 31:07Speaker 1: track baseball because they want.
- 31:10Speaker 5: To go to a seven on seven camp.
- 31:11Speaker 4: And I deal with a lot of that in terms
- 31:13Speaker 4: of basketball with some kids of the communities that I
- 31:16Speaker 4: work at because they they get they see they see
- 31:20Speaker 4: one tunnel and I'm like, buddy, have you looked up
- 31:23Speaker 4: the percentages for you to even make a like.
- 31:25Speaker 5: Where do you rank?
- 31:26Speaker 3: Now? Oh?
- 31:26Speaker 5: I don't rank any So what are you talking about?
- 31:29Speaker 4: You're not even you don't even start, and you want
- 31:31Speaker 4: to do what unless you become six six tomorrow. I'm
- 31:34Speaker 4: not trying to poo poo your dream, but this ain't happening.
- 31:39Speaker 5: We come back.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna find the statistics, the latest updated statistics. It
- 31:43Speaker 1: has probably gotten much lower with the transfer portal of
- 31:46Speaker 1: youth sports high school players who become college athletes at all.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Up next, though, Chris Crawford is again pinch hitting for
- 31:55Speaker 1: Ian Furnesso's out today, We're gonna talk to Chris Talk
- 31:57Speaker 1: on crosstalk to end our show before Chris takes over
- 32:00Speaker 1: from twelve to three on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Real quick, I wanted to give you these The NCAA
- 32:06Speaker 1: did a participation study of high school sports to college
- 32:08Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, and they found that over
- 32:11Speaker 1: eight million students play high school sports in the United States.
- 32:15Speaker 3: But check this out.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Let's break it down by sports over one million high
- 32:19Speaker 1: school players in football, Only seventy three thousand make college
- 32:24Speaker 1: football at any level NAIA Junior College Division one two
- 32:27Speaker 1: or three seventy three thousand out of a million boys
- 32:31Speaker 1: basketball five hundred and forty thousand high school players, how
- 32:34Speaker 1: many go to play college sports?
- 32:36Speaker 5: Eighteen thousand. I'm gonna say about twenty thousand, eighteen thousand
- 32:40Speaker 5: out of more than half a million. You know, the
- 32:41Speaker 5: kid would tell you could be me me.
- 32:43Speaker 3: I'm actually yeah, all right now I'm.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Going to me.
- 32:45Speaker 5: Are you even on your Are you even on varsity?
- 32:47Speaker 2: No?
- 32:48Speaker 3: I'm on JV.
- 32:49Speaker 5: And what year are you? I'm a junior. Good luck, bud,
- 32:52Speaker 5: best of luck to you. I'm my own trying to
- 32:54Speaker 5: be mean.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Girls' basketball four hundred and thirty thousand girls basketball players
- 32:57Speaker 1: in high school. Only sixteen thousand play the college level.
- 33:00Speaker 1: And that is with wow women's sports who have a
- 33:02Speaker 1: title nine. They have more opportunities offen than men soccer
- 33:07Speaker 1: eight hundred and fifty thousand high school players. I think
- 33:09Speaker 1: eight and thirty thousand of them are in this area.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Boys or girls combined, eight hundred and fifty thousand. How
- 33:16Speaker 1: many go by college fifty thousand play out of eight
- 33:20Speaker 1: hundred and fifty thousand, that i'd be more baseball half
- 33:24Speaker 1: a million high school players, how many go play professor
- 33:27Speaker 1: or college baseball.
- 33:28Speaker 3: At any level?
- 33:29Speaker 1: Thirty k thirty four thousand out of half a million
- 33:33Speaker 1: softball three hundred and sixty five thousand high school players
- 33:36Speaker 1: with how many are playing in college seventeen thirty one thousand. Ooh,
- 33:41Speaker 1: that's actually the highest of any group, and the highest
- 33:44Speaker 1: is seven percent.
- 33:46Speaker 5: Well, you might want to play volleyball.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Then they didn't book down volleyball. But that's a good point.
- 33:51Speaker 1: In all, only about six out of every one hundred
- 33:54Speaker 1: high school athletes play any level of college varsity any
- 33:57Speaker 1: level we're talking junior college, NAIA Division one, two or three.
- 34:03Speaker 1: So this entitlement that parents have, they ought to be
- 34:06Speaker 1: looking up these numbers going uh oh, why am I?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Why am I paying all this money to my club
- 34:11Speaker 1: soccer coach when I only have a spot.
- 34:14Speaker 4: You gotta look at the reality, like, if you're not
- 34:18Speaker 4: in any sports you play, if you are not the
- 34:20Speaker 4: guy or gal, college is just an education thing for you.
- 34:24Speaker 5: It's not oh I could probably play. No. No, if
- 34:28Speaker 5: you want to be on the bench, sure you might
- 34:30Speaker 5: have a possibility.
- 34:31Speaker 6: Can you contextualize this conversation for me because I'm interested.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Yes, it has been an ongoing two hours of talking
- 34:36Speaker 1: about the girls high school basketball coach at gig Harbor
- 34:41Speaker 1: High School was fired two weeks ago after her only season,
- 34:43Speaker 1: going nineteen and six and missing the state championship.
- 34:46Speaker 3: By one point.
- 34:47Speaker 5: So what was the reasoning for firing? The parents didn't
- 34:49Speaker 5: like her, that's it.
- 34:51Speaker 1: And the athletic department said, Okay, we're replacing her, and
- 34:54Speaker 1: the district last night stepped in and said, no, we're not,
- 34:58Speaker 1: We're keeping her. You didn't fall pro call blah blah blah.
- 35:01Speaker 1: And in fact, since she was fired, a bunch of
- 35:04Speaker 1: parents and more to the point, students, the athletes who
- 35:07Speaker 1: actually worked with the coach like her and said why
- 35:09Speaker 1: did you fire her? And it spawned a bigger conversation
- 35:13Speaker 1: from John Manley the News Tribune about the entitlement of
- 35:16Speaker 1: parents making decisions on coaching.
- 35:19Speaker 6: There's even a bigger conversation regarding parents involving in kids
- 35:22Speaker 6: sports that at the actual sporting events, I've seen some
- 35:26Speaker 6: stuff about getting into fights with the referees and you know,
- 35:29Speaker 6: all that stuff.
- 35:30Speaker 1: We've talked about that I'm a high school football referee
- 35:32Speaker 1: as well. I am glad that there is a sideline
- 35:35Speaker 1: between me and the stands, unlike basketball where in this
- 35:39Speaker 1: area there have been referees assaulted physically assaulted by parents
- 35:45Speaker 1: at an eighth grade game.
- 35:47Speaker 3: That happened a couple of years ago.
- 35:49Speaker 5: Remember that that was down in it Was it Auburn
- 35:51Speaker 5: or Kent?
- 35:52Speaker 6: I don't remember, but I remember the story. That's inexcuseable, man,
- 35:56Speaker 6: It's just the It's pathetic, is what it is.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it is, it really is.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Okay, one million high school football players seventy three thousand,
- 36:04Speaker 1: make it, almost one million soccer players fifty thousand, make it?
- 36:10Speaker 5: Come on, sounds aol right. Your club program is not
- 36:13Speaker 5: giving you that information.
- 36:16Speaker 4: You can get to the I love the text in
- 36:18Speaker 4: college from the four to two five. You dream crushers
- 36:20Speaker 4: laughing out loud. Those numbers don't matter to parents. They
- 36:23Speaker 4: all think their kids are gonna go somewhere.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Keep Zell, keep selling those Zelle's payments from venmo Are
- 36:29Speaker 1: club dues. I'll tell you this, We'll get your scholarship,
- 36:32Speaker 1: even though only six percent of you are gonna get one.
- 36:34Speaker 4: My kid going run track, play baseball, soccer if he
- 36:39Speaker 4: or she finds that she loves soccer more. She can
- 36:41Speaker 4: play soccer when she gets to high school, and she says,
- 36:44Speaker 4: I'm taking this series. We will then take the procedure
- 36:48Speaker 4: to see are you good enough? Do I need to
- 36:50Speaker 4: spend money on training? And if it works out for
- 36:52Speaker 4: you can go play at college. That's amazing. If you
- 36:54Speaker 4: play all four years and you had a good time
- 36:57Speaker 4: doing it. But you're gonna go to go kooks w SU,
- 37:00Speaker 4: that's fine too. I don't want to force any or
- 37:03Speaker 4: my child to do anything they don't want to do.
- 37:05Speaker 3: I hope you.
- 37:06Speaker 1: I hope you hold I will because my parents did,
- 37:08Speaker 1: and I will say I was guilty of this sometimes
- 37:10Speaker 1: as a parent that stands too.
- 37:11Speaker 5: I was at guilty of cheering or guilty.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Of guilty of being too overbearing and too noisy and
- 37:19Speaker 1: involved in I didn't talking to my kid in a
- 37:21Speaker 1: non constructive way about the coaching decisions.
- 37:25Speaker 5: I get that I did not have good car rides home.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 37:29Speaker 6: Not everyone has one hundred percent record with Yeah, I
- 37:31Speaker 6: don't think mine wasn't great, But I think you learned
- 37:33Speaker 6: from that.
- 37:34Speaker 5: I did, so that's I wish point. But I don't
- 37:36Speaker 5: have more kids so I talk to the wife. That's
- 37:43Speaker 5: the last thing we need now.
- 37:46Speaker 1: So I'm going to summarize all this by saying it
- 37:48Speaker 1: can be summarizing forwards, parents, parent, coaches, coach Andrews, you,
- 37:53Speaker 1: how are you going to do a show with Chris
- 37:55Speaker 1: Crawford next when Arsenal and Athletico are playing a second
- 37:59Speaker 1: leg the semi finals of.
- 38:01Speaker 6: The champions Someone has called me the master of multitasking
- 38:04Speaker 6: before because I have massive ADHD, so I go back
- 38:07Speaker 6: and forth between multiple tasks. So I've done it a lot.
- 38:10Speaker 6: It's what makes me somewhat successful at my job.
- 38:13Speaker 1: So Chris is off campus because he lives seven hour
- 38:17Speaker 1: drive from here and you are friendly to him. He's
- 38:20Speaker 1: filling in today free and faness what he got going
- 38:22Speaker 1: on here?
- 38:22Speaker 6: Yeah, we'll talk some Mariners after a big win last night.
- 38:26Speaker 6: We got We're gonna listen to some of the interviews
- 38:29Speaker 6: that we heard on Softing Dick Show yesterday from three
- 38:33Speaker 6: Mariners players. We'll see which ones that Chris wants to
- 38:38Speaker 6: chat about. Emerson Hancock, Ryan Wu probably will get to
- 38:41Speaker 6: and kind of react to that because they were fantastic conversations.
- 38:44Speaker 6: If you didn't hear him yesterday and then we also
- 38:47Speaker 6: were going to talk to Joe Shean of the Joshian Newsletter,
- 38:50Speaker 6: a very excellent analytic eye in terms of the national
- 38:54Speaker 6: perspective around baseball. So I'm really excited for.
- 38:57Speaker 3: That he might have something to say about John Stir because.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Yeah, it's good point. He's in the New York area too,
- 39:02Speaker 5: so yeah, in.
- 39:03Speaker 3: The New York area. That's right.
- 39:04Speaker 1: That's Anderson, Harris, Jessman McIntyre and Chris Crawford pinch hitting
- 39:08Speaker 1: again for Ian Forness. They're up next, Greg Bell the
- 39:11Speaker 1: News to Be and Chris very thank you. Thanks for
- 39:13Speaker 1: setting a recent record on our show for text messages
- 39:16Speaker 1: and your input. It's really interesting. I'm we're they're still
- 39:19Speaker 1: rolling out about this subject. Maybe we have to revisit
- 39:22Speaker 1: it again at another time. But if you missed our
- 39:24Speaker 1: show and our big conversation about this issue, go to
- 39:26Speaker 1: nine through three KJR dot com or the iHeartRadio app. Chris,
- 39:31Speaker 1: Andrews and Jessmen are up next. Greg and Chris say
- 39:33Speaker 1: thank you, bye bye.
