- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, top of the show. I feel like we should
- 0:05Speaker 1: cover the teams we don't talk about as often.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Who don't we talk about?
- 0:10Speaker 1: I feel like we don't talk about the Cleveland Guardians enough.
- 0:14Speaker 1: They're in the wild card race and Eric Kratz has
- 0:17Speaker 1: a Chase DeLauder shirt.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Nice.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I mean, I feel like we talk about them a lot.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Do you?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah. We talk about the Guardians a lot.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Which team do you feel like we talk about the least?
- 0:30Speaker 1: I have another question.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I mean, probably the Rockies because they aren't relevant.
- 0:34Speaker 1: What about of the teams that have any.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Semblance of– Marlins, we don't talk about a ton. The Marlins,
- 0:38Speaker 2: although we have a fish on first show.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and we're going to talk about the Marlins later
- 0:42Speaker 1: with Ken.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah. I think the Rockies would be the team we
- 0:45Speaker 2: probably talk about the least.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What about teams that are in contention?
- 0:50Speaker 2: With what?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Teams this year that are in contention. So get rid
- 0:53Speaker 1: of like the 10 teams that are out of it.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Of the 20 teams that have a semblance of a
- 0:57Speaker 1: chance at a playoff spot, I don't think we talk
- 1:00Speaker 1: about the Rangers a.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Lot because– They don't have anyone that really says anything.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody talks there.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Not nobody, but not many. Orioles, I guess we did talk.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Rangers are– We've talked twins a lot.
- 1:13Speaker 1: No, we talk twins a lot. All right, so let's
- 1:15Speaker 1: get to the team we don't talk about the most, right?
- 1:17Speaker 1: The team that we talk about the least is actually
- 1:19Speaker 1: the way to say it. The Dodgers. Did you know
- 1:21Speaker 1: that we have a Yamamoto shirt? FoulTerritoryShop.com. Just showing off
- 1:28Speaker 1: all the cool shirts we're unveiling as we go here.
- 1:32Speaker 1: There will be a shirt for every team pretty soon
- 1:35Speaker 1: and eventually maybe even every player. If you have requests
- 1:39Speaker 1: on players that you feel like you're interested in that
- 1:41Speaker 1: you would actually buy, not just I'm throwing a random
- 1:44Speaker 1: player out there, go for it. The top two sellers
- 1:47Speaker 1: right now are? Any guesses?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Murakami.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Close, but no. Same team.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Antonacci? Yes.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Hmm. Is he popular?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah, everyone in the White Sox is popular right now.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Because right now they're the two seed. By the way,
- 2:06Speaker 2: have you thought about this? The White Sox, to get
- 2:08Speaker 2: to the World Series, are going to have to play
- 2:10Speaker 2: the winner of the Rangers in the sixth seed, whether
- 2:14Speaker 2: that's the Guardians, Twins, Tigers, whoever the sixth seed is.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Well, the AL West winner, you're saying.
- 2:19Speaker 2: The AL West winner, right? I'm saying right now it
- 2:21Speaker 2: would be the Rangers against the Guardians or Astros or
- 2:25Speaker 2: Twins or Blue Jays, whoever that sixth seed is, okay?
- 2:28Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 2:29Speaker 2: They would play the White Sox in a five-game series.
- 2:33Speaker 2: The other side of the bracket, by the way, the
- 2:34Speaker 2: Rays are going to get the Yankees, Red Sox. That
- 2:40Speaker 2: doesn't seem right.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Well, let me add to that. Tim Healy put this
- 2:46Speaker 1: out yesterday, who covers the Red Sox, comes on the
- 2:47Speaker 1: show often. He's like, do the Red Sox want their
- 2:50Speaker 1: current wildcard seat? Or do they want the crappier wild
- 2:54Speaker 1: card seed? I don't think they're going to be able
- 2:56Speaker 1: to get it because they're too far off.
- 2:57Speaker 2: The crappier wild card seed? I mean, they're going to
- 2:59Speaker 2: play the Red Sox either way. Four or five. They'll
- 3:01Speaker 2: be the four or five seed. No, no.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I'm saying if the Red Sox.
- 3:05Speaker 2: The Red Sox. Oh, they want to be the six seed? Yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 1: As the six seed would play.
- 3:10Speaker 2: They have a seven game lead. They're not blowing that.
- 3:12Speaker 1: No, they're not. But he just threw it out there
- 3:14Speaker 1: and just pulled people. And most people were like, I'd
- 3:17Speaker 1: rather play. as the third wildcard this year because of
- 3:20Speaker 1: the AL West.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but then the White Sox, right, they have to
- 3:24Speaker 2: play the winner of that. Let's say they get through that.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Then they have to play the Rays, Yankees, or Red
- 3:27Speaker 2: Sox who have just gone through one or two series
- 3:29Speaker 2: of beating the crap out of each other. And the
- 3:31Speaker 2: White Sox, they have a chance to go to the
- 3:33Speaker 2: World Series.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But this actually creates a lane.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Think about that. That's crazy.
- 3:36Speaker 1: This creates a lane, though, for the sub-500 team that
- 3:40Speaker 1: could come out of the third wildcard.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Or be the AL West winner. Right.
- 3:45Speaker 1: But I'm saying they could beat the AL West winner.
- 3:47Speaker 1: That's crappy wildcard team. Then they play the White Sox.
- 3:50Speaker 1: No offense to the White Sox, but they aren't super battle-tested.
- 3:54Speaker 1: That path could be intriguing for a sub-500 team to
- 3:59Speaker 1: get far.
- 4:00Speaker 2: For the Astros team that fires their GM. Who starts
- 4:02Speaker 2: the first game?
- 4:03Speaker 5: Who starts the first game is the question that will
- 4:05Speaker 5: be asked for the White Sox when they make the playoffs.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Sean Burke. That's easy. He's the best pitcher. Sean Burke.
- 4:11Speaker 2: There's not even a question. Okay. Who else do you
- 4:16Speaker 2: think it would be? That's the answer.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I'm John Burke. And Castillo will slot in somewhere. Davis Martin,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Davis Martin's been up and down, but he's on the A's.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And he's hurt. All right, enough White Sox talk. Let's
- 4:31Speaker 1: get to the streaking Mariners. Is Cal Raleigh back?
- 4:41Speaker 2: No. Wow. It's one game. It's one game. He had
- 4:47Speaker 2: a great game. Three homer game. I mean, Scooter Jeanette
- 4:50Speaker 2: hit four homers in a game. Was he a Hall
- 4:52Speaker 2: of Fame player? No. I mean, it was a great
- 4:54Speaker 2: game for Cal. Three hits, three homers. He's still hitting
- 4:56Speaker 2: 160 with a low sixes OPS.
- 4:59Speaker 1: You need to see a lot more.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I need to see a lot more. He had, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 2: 1,000 OPS almost last year. I think it was right
- 5:05Speaker 2: at nine high nines. He also had 60 homers. He
- 5:08Speaker 2: has 17. No, he's not back.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Mariners have won one in a row.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Mariners are hot, baby.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Phillies had won nine in a row, Crafts, but they
- 5:16Speaker 1: lost this one. Zach Wheeler did not look good. He
- 5:18Speaker 1: hasn't looked good lately. Gave up four dingers. I want
- 5:21Speaker 1: to focus on the positive first. Do you feel as
- 5:23Speaker 1: strongly as AJ does? Do you think there's a chance
- 5:26Speaker 1: that Cal Raleigh suddenly finds it and helps ignite the Mariners'
- 5:31Speaker 1: offense to even close to average league-wise and that gets
- 5:37Speaker 1: them over the playoff hump and either in a wild
- 5:40Speaker 1: card spot or the division?
- 5:43Speaker 5: I mean, I don't even know close to average league-wise,
- 5:46Speaker 5: just Cal Raleigh-wide average. Like, if he gets his OPS
- 5:50Speaker 5: up to 700 for the season, that would be a
- 5:54Speaker 5: mega lift for this offense that has struggled, not last night,
- 5:59Speaker 5: but for most of the season. So to get him
- 6:02Speaker 5: to just his, closer to his career average, yeah, I
- 6:08Speaker 5: think he can do that. I mean, he's... You're riding
- 6:11Speaker 5: high after a three-home run game, but he also had
- 6:14Speaker 5: a home run, I think, Friday night against the Cubs right-handed.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I think you.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Have to feel like it's going to turn. I've said
- 6:22Speaker 5: this probably four or five times at least this season,
- 6:26Speaker 5: and maybe this is the time.
- 6:30Speaker 1: By the way, I didn't mean him becoming a league
- 6:32Speaker 1: average hitter. I meant the Mariners becoming more of a
- 6:35Speaker 1: league average offense because that's what's been dragging them down.
- 6:39Speaker 2: No.
- 6:41Speaker 1: They were hitting much more last year, led by Cal.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Cal was better. Naylor was better. Crawford was better.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Julio was better. Everybody was better.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Julio flipped it on us this year. He was better
- 6:52Speaker 1: in the first half.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah, which normally is the complete opposite. He had a
- 6:57Speaker 2: really good first two months.
- 7:00Speaker 5: I think the Mariners aren't even where they are, which
- 7:03Speaker 5: I think three games out is tough.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I mean, they're not like.
- 7:07Speaker 5: I guess they're kind of in striking distance. They got
- 7:09Speaker 5: a decently easy schedule after they get through those next
- 7:12Speaker 5: nine games. But without Dominic Canzone and Randy Rosarena, where
- 7:17Speaker 5: is this team offensively?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Great call.
- 7:23Speaker 2: He's having a great year. Cole Young?
- 7:25Speaker 1: No.
- 7:27Speaker 2: No, you're right. Cole Young too. What about Cole Young?
- 7:33Speaker 1: On the season?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah. For a rookie, I think he's... No, you're right.
- 7:37Speaker 1: You're right.
- 7:38Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah, for a rookie.
- 7:40Speaker 2: When you talk to Mariners people, they say Young has
- 7:42Speaker 2: been really huge for them. That's fair. Canzone, Young, and Rosarito.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Not just the bat. Like, everything. All-around player.
- 7:47Speaker 2: But the bat, too.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 2: He's gotten a ton of big hits for them.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Right. 703 OPS, 102 OPS +, four-win player.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 1: That's good. You'll take that first year.
- 7:59Speaker 2: They got to get in. They got to get in
- 8:00Speaker 2: the playoffs. Like..
- 8:02Speaker 5: And so are you saying, you asked, are they a
- 8:05Speaker 5: league average hitting team? I don't believe so. What has
- 8:08Speaker 5: shown you in the last two years that they will
- 8:12Speaker 5: become a league average hitting team? One of the things
- 8:19Speaker 5: that I wasn't very good at, well, it's playing Major
- 8:21Speaker 5: League Baseball. One of the things that I'm really good
- 8:24Speaker 5: at is sweating. Even now when I'm not playing, I
- 8:28Speaker 5: need hydration. I need to make sure it's convenient. That's
- 8:32Speaker 5: why I choose Quince.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yep, Quince electrolyte stick packs to the rescue, Kratts. They
- 8:37Speaker 1: taste great, and the zero sugar options are stevia-free. They're keto-approved,

- 9:11Speaker 1: This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or
- 9:13Speaker 1: prevent any disease. You keep butchering the question I'm asking.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You've done it twice now. The first time you were like, oh,
- 9:21Speaker 1: I'm not talking about Cal being league average player. I
- 9:24Speaker 1: wasn't saying that. I was saying, can Cal spark this
- 9:28Speaker 1: offense to play out production-wise more like a league average offense?
- 9:32Speaker 1: Because if it did that, I think that would have
- 9:35Speaker 1: made all the difference. They've been performing as a bottom whatever,
- 9:37Speaker 1: five offense in baseball.
- 9:39Speaker 2: That's all.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I'm saying over the next month and a half, can
- 9:43Speaker 1: this offense at least recover a little bit to be
- 9:46Speaker 1: more along the lines of league average, which is what
- 9:49Speaker 1: Cal was talking about post-game. Hey, the whole wipe the
- 9:53Speaker 1: rest out, it's an endurance battle, You just look at
- 9:55Speaker 1: right now going forward over the next month. That's all
- 9:57Speaker 1: I'm saying. No, crap. It's this year. It's not a league.
- 9:59Speaker 1: average offense. It's been a poo-poo offense.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Poo-poo. Yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I mean, before the season started, most people were like, oh,
- 10:11Speaker 1: they performed well last year, and now..
- 10:13Speaker 2: At the end.
- 10:14Speaker 1: What?
- 10:15Speaker 2: They performed well at the end.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I think they performed... consistently much better than they usually do.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Second half.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Okay. But second half, they were great.
- 10:23Speaker 2: They got Naylor. They got Suarez. Second half.
- 10:26Speaker 1: So they bring Naylor back. You expect something.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Not a great year. Nope.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Not a great year.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Suarez is not there.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Young and Emerson. Young, good.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Emerson's in AAA. Well, he was, and then he got hurt.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah. I actually did have surgery. He's having surgery tomorrow.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I know.
- 10:40Speaker 1: On the wrist. But yes, he was playing hurt, whatever.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And yeah, most of the guys took a step back.
- 10:47Speaker 2: That's what happens.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So, it's one game.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I mean, there's lots of guys that have great one games.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yep.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I mean, Domingo Armand threw a perfect game. Phil Humber
- 11:00Speaker 2: threw a perfect game.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Cal had never had a three-homer game. I figured maybe
- 11:04Speaker 1: last year he had one. Nope.
- 11:06Speaker 2: He had a lot of two-homer games last year.
- 11:08Speaker 1: He did.
- 11:08Speaker 5: He said at no level did he ever do it.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Wow. No Little League three-homer games?
- 11:16Speaker 2: His interview. I never had a three-homer game. You haven't?
- 11:22Speaker 1: High school, none of that? Nope. Two homer games?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Two homer games, yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 1: In, yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Big leagues, minor leagues, yeah. All that. But never three.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Okay. By the third, they're watching you a little closer
- 11:33Speaker 1: in that game. Like, if you have two early, they're like, me.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I'm going to be careful with this Brzezinski guy.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 1: He's feeling it today.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Can you see anything from a player in one game? Like, Oh,
- 11:45Speaker 1: I like that swing. I like the, you know, one
- 11:47Speaker 1: of the pitches on a high heat or whatever.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Sometimes the matchup just works.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Also Zach Wheeler has been bad the last.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Like four starts. He's had over a four, three or
- 11:56Speaker 2: four starts.
- 11:56Speaker 1: He doesn't have the same stuff right now. I don't
- 11:58Speaker 1: know if he's just going through a rut or what.
- 12:01Speaker 1: He was so good right away.
- 12:03Speaker 2: It's such an up and down season. Every, even the
- 12:06Speaker 2: best starting pitchers have a few clunk. Christopher Sanchez, who
- 12:09Speaker 2: we're showing right there, leads the league in, He had
- 12:11Speaker 2: that one start a couple weeks ago where he gave
- 12:14Speaker 2: up like seven in two innings or something. I mean,
- 12:19Speaker 2: everyone has ups and downs in the season. Chase Burns
- 12:21Speaker 2: got whacked around last night, right? I mean, it happens.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It's hard to go out and every start be perfect. And,
- 12:27Speaker 2: I mean, the Miz has been the one guy– I mean,
- 12:32Speaker 2: his bad start is like three runs. Schlittler gave up
- 12:34Speaker 2: a bunch a couple times out, right? But his ERA
- 12:37Speaker 2: is still down because they bounced back from it. I mean,
- 12:40Speaker 2: I expect Zach Wheeler will figure it out.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Did you see Cal jump and hit his head in
- 12:45Speaker 1: the dugout?
- 12:45Speaker 2: I did not. What do you think he was playing
- 12:47Speaker 2: at Old Tiger Stadium?
- 12:49Speaker 1: How tall was that dugout at Old Tiger Stadium?
- 12:52Speaker 2: Ken probably could have stood up in it. Oh, man.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Ken's listening right now, too, because he's about to join us.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Here it is. See?
- 13:00Speaker 2: He has his helmet on. That's smart. Yeah. Safe hit.
- 13:07Speaker 1: For those listening. Cal and Logan Gilbert did a little
- 13:10Speaker 1: jump celebration in the dugout, Cal.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Progressive Field has heaters on the ceiling of their dugout.
- 13:16Speaker 5: That will catch a bald man's head.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I don't know if AJ ever hit his head on
- 13:19Speaker 2: those heaters. No, I wasn't jumping. You don't have to jump.
- 13:24Speaker 2: You just walk. You just walk and hit it.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Someone was like, hey, AJ, let's have our celebration, but
- 13:30Speaker 1: you and me jump in the dugout. You'd be like, no.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Not happening.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Not your style. Hey. uh refuse to lose territory while
- 13:39Speaker 1: you make your last comment here just want to show
- 13:40Speaker 1: everyone we have a mariner show what's.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Up no i mean some of these dugouts are can
- 13:45Speaker 2: be a little dangerous um but nothing will ever top
- 13:48Speaker 2: old detroit at nothing you could literally ken might be
- 13:52Speaker 2: the only person i know that can stand up fully in.
- 13:54Speaker 1: It give me a real measurement is it six feet.
- 13:56Speaker 2: No chance it's not six it was not it's not
- 13:59Speaker 2: there anymore but it was not six feet.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Because you know how low like six feet you're hitting
- 14:04Speaker 1: your head above six feet. Even if you're six feet tall,
- 14:06Speaker 1: basically when you're, if you.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Move up and drop, if you talk to me, I
- 14:10Speaker 2: went to Scotland and we went in the RNA, which
- 14:12Speaker 2: is where St. Andrews is.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:13Speaker 2: RNA is Royal and ancient and their clubhouse. They just
- 14:16Speaker 2: redid it. And the ceilings were six foot five. So
- 14:19Speaker 2: I was walking and ducking and we were with the
- 14:21Speaker 2: guy who was six, five. So he was just skimming
- 14:23Speaker 2: the top of his head. This was at least a
- 14:27Speaker 2: foot shorter.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Did you get to the, did you get to the
- 14:32Speaker 5: clubhouse from the dugout?
- 14:34Speaker 2: I've never been to. So you had to get in there.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You got to the clubhouse from the road. The road,
- 14:41Speaker 2: there was a door. You literally walked in this door
- 14:44Speaker 2: from the road. I mean, right into the clubhouse. I'm
- 14:48Speaker 2: sure Ken will tell us when he comes on. You
- 14:50Speaker 2: got off the bus, right off the street, right in
- 14:53Speaker 2: this door to the clubhouse, which was from me to
- 14:56Speaker 2: you from the people. It was just a door. And
- 15:00Speaker 2: the clubhouse was about the size of this area we're
- 15:02Speaker 2: in right now. And then you walk down this hallway
- 15:04Speaker 2: and there was a urinal on the left. And then
- 15:06Speaker 2: you went out to the dugout and the dugout was
- 15:09Speaker 2: literally like this high. And the best thing about old
- 15:12Speaker 2: Tiger Stadium was on the urinal above it, it said
- 15:14Speaker 2: some of the best players in the history of the
- 15:16Speaker 2: game have pissed here. Play like one today.
- 15:19Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 15:20Speaker 2: That was cool. And then the bullpens were the pillboxes.
- 15:24Speaker 2: So you literally sat in the dugout and there was
- 15:26Speaker 2: like this much, or in the bullpen, and there was
- 15:28Speaker 2: this much. You sat and you looked and watched the game.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Like the World War II pillboxes?
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yeah. The clubhouse was smaller than Wrigley's.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Old visiting clubhouse. This is back when they gave you
- 15:44Speaker 2: a pizza after the game for spreads. It was awesome.
- 15:49Speaker 2: It was awesome to check it. Old Milwaukee might have
- 15:52Speaker 2: been worse, but at least you could stand up in
- 15:54Speaker 2: the dugouts there.
- 15:57Speaker 1: The Rays won on Monday night. 4-1 your final score,
- 16:00Speaker 1: final line for Frambois Valdez. Six innings, four runs, three earned,
- 16:03Speaker 1: two walks, no Ks. Okay. Did you see the swing
- 16:08Speaker 1: and miss situation? No whiffs on 41 swings? Frambois Valdez
- 16:13Speaker 1: can get some whiffs.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Did they have something on? What they did great was
- 16:17Speaker 2: they laid off his curveball.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Most swings against the Tigers pitcher. Forget that part. We'll
- 16:21Speaker 1: go to the bottom here from Jason Beck. Last MLB
- 16:24Speaker 1: pitcher with 41-plus swings without a whiff. Genesis Cabrera in 2019-44.
- 16:29Speaker 1: This does not happen in today's game.
- 16:33Speaker 2: No.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And you would think it would be from someone else.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I know Frambois gets a lot of ground ball contact,
- 16:37Speaker 1: but he also gets whiffs.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but usually on his curveball, and they were laying
- 16:41Speaker 2: off the curveball last night, especially in that first inning.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I watched the first inning of this game, and it
- 16:45Speaker 2: was like curveball, curveball, and they fouled off, fouled off,
- 16:47Speaker 2: fouled off, took it, fouled off, took it, took it.
- 16:50Speaker 2: He hasn't been great this year. Let's just say that.
- 16:54Speaker 5: He is an interesting case of he's been his whole career.
- 16:58Speaker 2: He's got no hitter.
- 17:00Speaker 5: He's got, you know, he'll have ridiculous outings and then
- 17:05Speaker 5: he'll have a clunker where it's like, you know, why
- 17:08Speaker 5: is his stuff? Why is this stuff not play in
- 17:11Speaker 5: certain outings? I feel like it's been a little bit
- 17:12Speaker 5: more this year, but. I think that and throwing at
- 17:16Speaker 5: his own catcher probably kept him out on the market
- 17:18Speaker 5: a little bit longer than you would have thought maybe
- 17:21Speaker 5: two years ago that Framber.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Would have been once he got to free agency.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Still ultimately got paid. And also, the one thing he
- 17:29Speaker 1: always does is rack innings.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Is what?
- 17:32Speaker 1: Rack up innings.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Oh, he just takes the ball.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yeah, he does. Bella.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Bella, Bella, where? I don't know where Bella is, but
- 17:48Speaker 2: I know how to take care of my pup.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Kratz, while you find Bella, today's episode is sponsored by

- 18:44Speaker 1: Three runs, three earned runs or fewer in 26 of
- 18:47Speaker 1: 28 starts for Cade Cavaglia. It's the most in Major
- 18:50Speaker 1: League Baseball. Schlittler and Mizorowski have 24. He's got 26.
- 18:56Speaker 2: He's been good, man.
- 18:57Speaker 1: So good.
- 18:57Speaker 2: He's been so good in my over still hit because,
- 19:00Speaker 2: but I tell you, the Nationals score a ton of runs.
- 19:03Speaker 1: They do.
- 19:04Speaker 2: They score so many runs, and guess what my bet
- 19:06Speaker 2: will be?
- 19:07Speaker 6: Not always.
- 19:07Speaker 2: A little sneak peek into my bet lane.
- 19:09Speaker 1: That's right.
- 19:11Speaker 2: And their bullpen gives up a lot.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Their bullpen gives up. That's what I said. Cavalli could
- 19:14Speaker 2: go eight no-hit innings, and they could give up nine
- 19:17Speaker 2: in the night.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It took him a while to really get it all together.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Not this year. Between the injuries and the– no, no, no.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I'm saying in his career.
- 19:23Speaker 2: You know why? Because he came on with us in
- 19:25Speaker 2: spring training, and he had that cool mustache.
- 19:28Speaker 1: That was the difference maker. 22nd overall pick in 2020,
- 19:32Speaker 1: the weird COVID draft. Remember that? There were a number
- 19:37Speaker 1: of college starters I remember taking back then. Asa Lacy,
- 19:40Speaker 1: who didn't pan out.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Oh, Asa Lacy. Remember him?
- 19:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember that. But it was that same mix.
- 19:45Speaker 1: There was probably seven or eight guys that were really
- 19:48Speaker 1: good in college. I mean, obviously there's. good starters every year,
- 19:51Speaker 1: but I just remember that mix, and it was weird
- 19:53Speaker 1: because you didn't have as many rounds to pick, which
- 19:55Speaker 1: is Manfred's dream and all that. But Cade Cavalli has
- 19:59Speaker 1: worked out at good timing for the Nats because they're
- 20:02Speaker 1: trying to enter the next game.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Well, they had him and Foster Griffin.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Right. They traded Griffin. They're going to need to stack
- 20:09Speaker 1: up some pitching this offseason. Yep.
- 20:11Speaker 2: It's a bony time.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah. It's everyone's favorite. It's a segment we don't get
- 20:24Speaker 1: to do as often, thanks to the challenge system. But
- 20:29Speaker 1: Ump Show is back. What do you have for me
- 20:31Speaker 1: on Ashton Braxton? Ashcraft.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Ashton Braxcraft?
- 20:36Speaker 1: Ashton Braxcraft. Braxton Ashcraft.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Well, this is the Chris Sale. This is the Chris Sale.
- 20:42Speaker 1: So can we figure this out?
- 20:43Speaker 2: So he told the umpires that he was going to
- 20:46Speaker 2: pitch out of the windup. And then he did it.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And then the hitter went by. And then the second hitter,
- 20:52Speaker 2: they called him for a balk. It's the same thing
- 20:54Speaker 2: as Chris Sale. So can we just get some umpire,
- 20:58Speaker 2: any umpire, come out and say, you have to declare
- 21:04Speaker 2: before every hitter. If you just tell the players that,
- 21:06Speaker 2: they'll do it. But you can't just not have everyone
- 21:10Speaker 2: knowing and some umpires call it and some umpires don't
- 21:12Speaker 2: call it. To me, that sounds like a good– Same
- 21:14Speaker 2: exact umpire. Same umpire. It's Dan Marzell. Well, then maybe
- 21:19Speaker 2: he's the only one that doesn't know this. So maybe
- 21:21Speaker 2: somebody needs to get to old Dan. He's the only
- 21:22Speaker 2: one that's called it. Maybe somebody needs to get to
- 21:23Speaker 2: old Dan and tell him to stop. Because, Dan, you're
- 21:26Speaker 2: kind of not good right now.
- 21:28Speaker 5: But when we– I mean, when we talked about this
- 21:32Speaker 5: with Sale, somebody in the chat I think said it
- 21:36Speaker 5: is technically a rule. It's technically a rule that you
- 21:40Speaker 5: have to declare for each batter. And I'll be honest,
- 21:43Speaker 5: I've never seen it. And in the pitch clock era,
- 21:47Speaker 5: it's not something that's in that timing of a pitcher,
- 21:51Speaker 5: timing of a catcher to declare that. And Dan Marzell
- 21:56Speaker 5: and his crew has gotten it. It's been Dan both
- 21:59Speaker 5: times behind the dish calling it.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Okay, so maybe it's his problem.
- 22:05Speaker 1: That sounds like an ump issue.
- 22:06Speaker 2: It sounds like a one-guy problem. It was like Bach
- 22:08Speaker 2: and Bob Davidson forever. He was the guy. There are
- 22:11Speaker 2: certain guys with umpires that just have certain things that
- 22:14Speaker 2: you know they're going to call. Dan Merzell is the
- 22:17Speaker 2: guy who's going to call you for a Bach. Every pitch,
- 22:19Speaker 2: if I was the pitcher, I'd be like, wind up!
- 22:21Speaker 2: Just make a mockery of it. Wind up!
- 22:25Speaker 1: That's stupid. That's making it about him. Even if he's
- 22:28Speaker 1: the one following the rules, well, then everybody else isn't
- 22:30Speaker 1: following the rules. I think you need to all get
- 22:32Speaker 1: together and decide.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Can we just get a clarification from the league?
- 22:36Speaker 1: But that's the league and the umps and all of that.
- 22:38Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. But can we not get the
- 22:39Speaker 2: league to come together and say, hey, guys, this is
- 22:42Speaker 2: stupid that they have to declare every– if they change,
- 22:44Speaker 2: if they go from windup to the stretch, fine. It's
- 22:48Speaker 2: not that hard. It's time. To me, it's time.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Why do you have to declare each time? To me,
- 22:54Speaker 5: if you switch, yes, you have to declare. If you
- 22:56Speaker 5: have somebody that's on third and you just say, okay,
- 22:59Speaker 5: maybe it's a bunt attempt, so we're going to go
- 23:01Speaker 5: from the stretch– You got a power hitter, so we're
- 23:05Speaker 5: going to go from the windup. No chance the guy's faking, stealing, shift, whatever.
- 23:10Speaker 5: But if you don't change, to me, why do you
- 23:11Speaker 5: have to declare it again?
- 23:15Speaker 2: You shouldn't. That's my point. But why can't we get
- 23:18Speaker 2: clarification from MLB?
- 23:20Speaker 1: Don't you think the teams are calling and complaining at
- 23:23Speaker 1: this point?
- 23:24Speaker 2: Well, the Braves and the Pirates probably are calling and
- 23:31Speaker 2: complaining now.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah, they should be, right?
- 23:34Speaker 2: I mean, Don Kelly didn't get ejected. How Chris Sale
- 23:36Speaker 2: didn't get ejected, I still haven't figured it out.
- 23:38Speaker 1: He got ejected the next day.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Which was awesome. That was awesome.
- 23:42Speaker 1: I hope Ashcraft gets ejected.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Today? Yeah. Before the first pitch?
- 23:48Speaker 1: Screw you guys.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Then they would have to do– you know what? Honestly,
- 23:51Speaker 2: then they'd have to do something about it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 2: If guys keep getting this call and then they have
- 23:56Speaker 2: to get– they keep getting ejected before the first pitch,
- 23:59Speaker 2: MLB would have to say something about it.
- 24:01Speaker 1: We've already reached that point.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Here's the thing. If you're a player, force the league
- 24:05Speaker 2: to say something or do something. Not in a bad way.
- 24:08Speaker 2: This isn't a bad thing. They're not causing problems. They're
- 24:10Speaker 2: not causing a fight. But bring attention to it and
- 24:13Speaker 2: make the league make a clarification so that every umpire
- 24:16Speaker 2: is on the same page.
- 24:19Speaker 1: To me, this is getting petty on the second one
- 24:22Speaker 1: in the last two weeks.
- 24:23Speaker 2: It's covering. Oh, it happened last time. I want to
- 24:26Speaker 2: do it again. Yeah. It's... It's the Joe West called
- 24:30Speaker 2: a balk. Remember Joe West called the balk on Mark Burley.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Next time we had him, Angel Hernandez called the balk.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Just to show our solidarity. I'm going to do it
- 24:37Speaker 2: again just to show everyone that I know the rule book.
- 24:42Speaker 1: It's silly.
- 24:44Speaker 2: It is dumb.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I mean, it's that and the same thing with just
- 24:48Speaker 1: having a plan down on when someone can challenge a pitch.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Oh, that's also asinine.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Yes. But to me, that's why we still have this segment.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I mean, just make it reasonable with the challenges.
- 25:05Speaker 1: You would hope that a professional umpire just does what
- 25:09Speaker 1: everyone else does and doesn't say, you know, I'm going
- 25:11Speaker 1: to be the one guy that's going to do this differently.
- 25:13Speaker 1: This is in the book. I'm standing for it. Nobody
- 25:16Speaker 1: else is doing it.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Really? Hey, everyone's there to watch him.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Right. This was the tweet that I referred to at
- 25:28Speaker 1: the top of the show. We found it. The Red
- 25:29Speaker 1: Sox are in the same spot now as they were
- 25:31Speaker 1: last year. This is coming from Tim Healy, who covers
- 25:33Speaker 1: the team. Would you rather, A, get the number two
- 25:36Speaker 1: wild card and visit Yankees in the first round, or B,
- 25:40Speaker 1: get the number three wild card and visit the AL
- 25:43Speaker 1: West winner in the first round? And he said in parentheses,
- 25:46Speaker 1: of course you get the top wild card, you host,
- 25:48Speaker 1: but that's not the question here. A or B? I
- 25:50Speaker 1: know that there's a huge gap and it's not going
- 25:52Speaker 1: to happen, but if it was a small gap.
- 25:56Speaker 2: I mean, honestly, you probably wouldn't mind traveling to Texas
- 25:59Speaker 2: or Houston, whoever wins the AL West, right?
- 26:02Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I mean, if it's Seattle, it's a little bit different
- 26:05Speaker 2: because that's a hell of a hike from Boston to Seattle.
- 26:08Speaker 1: The Rangers win the AL West. Wouldn't you rather play
- 26:11Speaker 1: them than the Yankees?
- 26:12Speaker 2: But you get DeGrom and Ivaldi and McKenzie Cole.
- 26:14Speaker 3: True.
- 26:14Speaker 2: In a three-game series. I'm just saying.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Rather play the Astros or the Yankees.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Or versus Schlittler, Cole, and Freed, Rondon, whoever the three
- 26:23Speaker 2: of the Yankees run out there in Yankee Stadium. Tough choice.
- 26:29Speaker 5: I would look at the Red Sox and the Yankees.
- 26:31Speaker 5: They both play better on the road. Now I know
- 26:34Speaker 5: the Red Sox sucked at home at the beginning of
- 26:37Speaker 5: the season, but their records are better both on the road.
- 26:41Speaker 5: So maybe they just want to keep it. Maybe the
- 26:42Speaker 5: Red Sox want to keep it the same and go
- 26:44Speaker 5: into Yankee Stadium. Either way, they got a gauntlet of
- 26:47Speaker 5: two pitchers to face, whoever they have to face, Mariners, Rangers,
- 26:51Speaker 5: or Yankees.
- 26:52Speaker 2: The top two in those rotations, top three in some, foof. Meanwhile,
- 27:02Speaker 2: the White Sox are just sitting back going.

- 28:10Speaker 7: slash foul.
- 28:12Speaker 1: All right, let's get to this beef. And also, if
- 28:17Speaker 1: you did have someone's pitches, the pitcher's tipping and you're
- 28:22Speaker 1: standing in your box and Should you be relaying what
- 28:25Speaker 1: you see?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Yes. To hitters? Yes.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Okay, I think that's an important first question here to determine.
- 28:30Speaker 2: One million percent.
- 28:31Speaker 1: So then what's wrong with relaying that? We don't even
- 28:35Speaker 1: have to know if it was actually happening with Quinton
- 28:39Speaker 1: Berry or not. But let's run the sound from Merrill Kelly,
- 28:42Speaker 1: who did not appreciate it and thinks it's against the rules.
- 28:47Speaker 2: If it's a guy on.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Second base and they see the grip in your glove
- 28:50Speaker 3: or if the hitters can see something that you're doing
- 28:52Speaker 3: with your..
- 28:53Speaker 2: Glove, you know, I think that's fair game.
- 28:55Speaker 3: I think guys have been doing that since the beginning
- 28:57Speaker 3: of baseball. Um, I think it's a little bush league
- 28:59Speaker 3: when it comes from outside that I think inside the
- 29:02Speaker 3: lines is one thing. I think the guys that are
- 29:04Speaker 3: standing outside the lines, um, I think it's a little,
- 29:07Speaker 3: I think it's a little bush league. Um, that being said,
- 29:10Speaker 3: I got to take a look at what I'm doing. Um,
- 29:14Speaker 3: cause clearly he had something. Um, and obviously if he
- 29:17Speaker 3: has it, then other people will probably pick up on
- 29:20Speaker 3: it as well. Um, So I've got to figure out
- 29:22Speaker 3: and do better on my part to not give it away. But, yeah,
- 29:27Speaker 3: I think it should stay between the players.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Does it violate the Bush League laws like he said?
- 29:33Speaker 2: No. No, no.
- 29:36Speaker 1: What's the point of the coach? No.
- 29:38Speaker 2: If the coach can see something, then. you need to
- 29:40Speaker 2: fix it. Like the Cubs were saying, fix it. Okay,
- 29:43Speaker 2: guess what? You know what the Cubs just did? A favor.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Because now you know. And now you can fix it.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Whatever it is he was doing, now you can fix it. Now,
- 29:52Speaker 2: teams used to be a little more subtle about stuff.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Now they just do it blatantly. They don't even hide
- 29:57Speaker 2: it anymore. Because, again, nobody will throw at anybody. Nobody
- 30:00Speaker 2: wants to fight. Cause they're going to get fine. So
- 30:03Speaker 2: they don't want to fight. They don't want to, they
- 30:04Speaker 2: don't want to do this. They just say, okay, you know,
- 30:08Speaker 2: I got to fix it. But the Cubs did him
- 30:10Speaker 2: a favor. If he's really tipping his change up and
- 30:13Speaker 2: the third base coach can see it by standing in
- 30:14Speaker 2: the box. And you know what? Fix it.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:19Speaker 5: QB was Quentin Berry was very, I felt like he
- 30:22Speaker 5: was very discreet about it. And you know, he just,
- 30:26Speaker 5: he had both his hands. I can't do it cause
- 30:27Speaker 5: I'm on TV, but it is both his hands down
- 30:29Speaker 5: to the side. And he was just like, with his
- 30:32Speaker 5: left hand. That was what they were surmising that he
- 30:37Speaker 5: was doing. That was the video that I saw. Now,
- 30:42Speaker 5: if the third base coach is getting something from the dugout,
- 30:47Speaker 5: maybe I can get on the side of Merrill Kelly here.
- 30:50Speaker 5: But I feel like he's not way down left field
- 30:55Speaker 5: seeing something. It's not the first base coach out of
- 30:58Speaker 5: the box. They have rules now, so... I don't agree
- 31:02Speaker 5: with Merrill Kelly that it was Bush League.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Can we show that photo, too? The screenshot. And I
- 31:10Speaker 1: think this is just a fan who was pointing this out,
- 31:12Speaker 1: but the tweet got some pickup. The fan said, this
- 31:16Speaker 1: picture has everything. Merrill Kelly staring down the Cubs third
- 31:19Speaker 1: base coach for half an inning. And Michael Srook at
- 31:22Speaker 1: the game, even though he's on the injured list. I
- 31:25Speaker 1: was like, can we get Jeff Bannister to... hit up
- 31:28Speaker 1: the casino and go pick up Quintel Marte, buy a shirt,
- 31:31Speaker 1: and bring him to the seat next to Mike Soroka. Hey,
- 31:34Speaker 1: we still have a season going on.
- 31:36Speaker 2: I love that Soroka's there.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Of course he's there.
- 31:38Speaker 2: It's great.
- 31:39Speaker 1: And also, a lot of guys do this. A lot
- 31:42Speaker 1: of guys are still there, especially in Arizona where everything's there, right?
- 31:45Speaker 2: I would be there. What else you got to do?
- 31:47Speaker 2: Are you part of the team?
- 31:50Speaker 1: Do you care about your team's season?
- 31:52Speaker 2: I always thought I did. You're there. 100%, I'm there.
- 31:57Speaker 2: But I'm not..
- 31:59Speaker 5: It's never gone through... It's never gone through my head
- 32:01Speaker 5: to not be there. But staying on the topic of
- 32:05Speaker 5: the sign stealing and everything, like, where is the line?
- 32:11Speaker 5: The line is drawn by whoever draws the line. If
- 32:17Speaker 5: Merrill Kelly thought it was Bush League, just like some
- 32:21Speaker 5: pitchers are like, that's Bush League.
- 32:23Speaker 2: You're butting on me. Don't bunt on me. Like..
- 32:27Speaker 5: Why is Bunting Bushley? Well, if you bunt on me,
- 32:30Speaker 5: I'm going to hit the next guy. That's how it's policed.
- 32:32Speaker 5: So the line is really like you can draw the
- 32:34Speaker 5: line wherever you want. If Merrill Kelly really had a problem,
- 32:37Speaker 5: maybe he should have hit somebody. They don't do that anymore, Krauts.
- 32:43Speaker 5: How many times do I got to say that? Guys,
- 32:44Speaker 5: don't throw at anybody anymore. Hey, I'm not disagreeing with you.
- 32:50Speaker 5: They're not allowed to police themselves.
- 32:52Speaker 2: And there's a guy who just went in the Hall
- 32:53Speaker 2: of Fame that was known if you bunted on him,
- 32:55Speaker 2: he would hit you the next pitch. He's a big
- 32:58Speaker 2: left-handed pitcher. He just went in the Hall of Fame.
- 33:00Speaker 2: If you bunted on him, he'd hit you the next
- 33:02Speaker 2: time up. So they stopped bunting on him. Do you
- 33:07Speaker 2: know who I'm talking about?
- 33:09Speaker 5: Or?
- 33:10Speaker 2: Yeah, CeCe. Yeah, it was a known fact. If you
- 33:13Speaker 2: bunt on him, especially early in his career, he was
- 33:14Speaker 2: going to hit you because he had to get off
- 33:16Speaker 2: the mound and he wasn't great at fielding it. And
- 33:19Speaker 2: then he'd yell at you if you bunted and then
- 33:21Speaker 2: he'd hit you.
- 33:21Speaker 1: That's Bush's league.
- 33:23Speaker 2: That's what he did. I'm not saying nothing. That's what
- 33:26Speaker 2: he did. That was his thing. It was known around
- 33:27Speaker 2: the league. But then think about it.
- 33:29Speaker 5: As a player, if you're afraid of getting hit, that
- 33:33Speaker 5: eliminates two base runners. So it's smart by him. It's
- 33:38Speaker 5: definitely helpful for you.
- 33:40Speaker 2: But also as a team, you bunt. He doesn't field
- 33:43Speaker 2: it well. You get on.
- 33:45Speaker 5: Now he hits the next guy. If he's known to
- 33:46Speaker 5: do that and he hits the next guy, you got two.
- 33:49Speaker 2: No, he wouldn't hit the next guy. He would hit you. Oh,
- 33:52Speaker 2: he'd hit you the next time up. I got you. Yeah,
- 33:55Speaker 2: he wouldn't hit the next guy. He would hit you.
- 33:59Speaker 5: So on base percentage, twice. I just think– I don't
- 34:04Speaker 5: think it's Bush League from the coach, but.
- 34:08Speaker 2: If he's standing in the box and he's doing it
- 34:10Speaker 2: and he can see something, he did you a favor,
- 34:11Speaker 2: Merrill Kelly, because now he can fix it.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's having a tough year, Kelly. He's got
- 34:15Speaker 1: a five-and-a-half-ish ERA. He's not pitching well in August. But
- 34:19Speaker 1: if you polled all Major League Baseball players– the majority
- 34:24Speaker 1: would say it's okay?
- 34:27Speaker 2: Nobody's stopping it.
- 34:28Speaker 1: How do you even stop it? You'd have to take
- 34:31Speaker 1: the base coaches off. You can't say like, I mean,
- 34:34Speaker 1: there's way too many signs and ways that you can
- 34:36Speaker 1: give a sign if you're a base coach. How would
- 34:38Speaker 1: you police it? You can't police it.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Well, you police it because you do what we said.
- 34:42Speaker 2: You throw at a guy. You hit a guy and
- 34:44Speaker 2: you say that's for him giving a sign. It's like
- 34:46Speaker 2: when the guy's at second base jumping around like a
- 34:49Speaker 2: crazy person. You hit a guy, or you get a
- 34:54Speaker 2: curveball grip in your glove, and you let him tell
- 34:56Speaker 2: the guy it's a curveball, and then you throw a
- 34:58Speaker 2: heater up and in. Do you think a guy's giving signs?
- 35:02Speaker 2: You go out to the mound, and you say, okay,
- 35:04Speaker 2: second pitch, I'm going to put down a curveball. First
- 35:06Speaker 2: pitch is no sign. We'll figure out your pitch, and
- 35:09Speaker 2: then the second pitch, you say, all right, I'm going
- 35:10Speaker 2: to put down a curveball, and you buzz the guy's tower.
- 35:13Speaker 2: And you know what it did? It stopped that dude
- 35:15Speaker 2: at second base because the guy hitting was pissed at
- 35:17Speaker 2: the guy at second base for telling him the wrong sign.
- 35:19Speaker 2: And it scares the bejesus out of you. Trust me.
- 35:24Speaker 5: You think a pitch is coming? You have sold out
- 35:26Speaker 5: to that? Watch when catchers try to, like, hey, I
- 35:29Speaker 5: got crossed up. That's why catchers are like, hey, imagine
- 35:32Speaker 5: hitting and you're like, oh, this is a curveball. I'm
- 35:35Speaker 5: just going to stand in here, not flinch, and this ball–
- 35:38Speaker 5: goes right in the holler underneath your neck. But one
- 35:41Speaker 5: of the things that Merrill Kelly said after the game,
- 35:43Speaker 5: he said, yeah, we thought he was doing it with lefties.
- 35:46Speaker 2: So something, you know, signaling lefties. So I went back
- 35:49Speaker 2: and looked.
- 35:50Speaker 5: He gave up two extra base hits to Ramirez and
- 35:53Speaker 5: Conforto versus Kelly in the game. Is that enough to
- 35:57Speaker 5: say they had something? Ian Happ didn't have an extra
- 36:00Speaker 5: base hit. Now they had hits, but..
- 36:03Speaker 2: Was that enough?
- 36:04Speaker 5: To me, Merrill Kelly had one of his better outings
- 36:07Speaker 5: as far as earned runs allowed, but you just base
- 36:11Speaker 5: it on what's happening, what kind of takes these guys
- 36:15Speaker 5: are having compared to what they normally have, and it
- 36:18Speaker 5: all checked out for the Diamondbacks, and that's why they
- 36:21Speaker 5: were pissed. But we just had Patrick Mooney on. There's
- 36:24Speaker 5: a reason Alex Bregman is always in the playoffs. He
- 36:28Speaker 5: brings an intangible that maybe he was with another organization.
- 36:32Speaker 5: And he faced Merrill Kelly and said, Hey, we had
- 36:37Speaker 5: some of them, Merrill Kelly, Quentin Berry. This is what
- 36:39Speaker 5: we had. See if you can see if you can
- 36:42Speaker 5: fix it. This is what Alex core. I mean, Alex,
- 36:44Speaker 5: everybody knows like the like main guys who are really,
- 36:47Speaker 5: really good at sign stealing and picking up tells. And
- 36:52Speaker 5: I think Alex Bregman is one of those guys from
- 36:56Speaker 5: what I've heard. And the little bit that I've, that
- 36:59Speaker 5: I've seen, he's very good at that. And, That helps
- 37:02Speaker 5: hitters everywhere.
- 37:05Speaker 1: One other piece of the Diamondbacks puzzle we'll get to
- 37:08Speaker 1: in a moment is Tori Lavello's sound. But before that,
- 37:11Speaker 1: just a reminder to everyone, if you like what you're watching,
- 37:14Speaker 1: if you like.
- 37:14Speaker 2: What you're listening to. It's something every day, by the way.
- 37:16Speaker 1: It is right now. Subscribe to Foul Territory. Baseball, the
- 37:21Speaker 1: way it should be covered.
- 37:22Speaker 2: We're trying to.
- 37:24Speaker 4: To create the softest space for him to reemerge back
- 37:28Speaker 4: into this environment. And that's up to him however he
- 37:31Speaker 4: wants to do it. I cannot force a human being
- 37:34Speaker 4: to do something that I want to do or anybody
- 37:37Speaker 4: in this room wants to do or a fan wants
- 37:38Speaker 4: to do. One of the things that made Cattell such
- 37:42Speaker 4: an extraordinary player is that he goes to the beat
- 37:44Speaker 4: of his own drum.
- 37:45Speaker 2: And I respect that. And I don't know..
- 37:52Speaker 4: Some of the answers to that question because I've talked
- 37:55Speaker 4: to just about every player, and I know.
- 37:58Speaker 2: How they feel, but it's a very individualized situation.
- 38:05Speaker 4: How are you taking this day by day, and what
- 38:11Speaker 4: are you willing to do to help is the mindset
- 38:14Speaker 4: in that clubhouse. With Cattell, he's very private, and he's
- 38:18Speaker 4: very quiet, and it's hard to extract information from him.
- 38:22Speaker 1: That's Torrey Lovello, Diamondbacks manager, about the ball game.
- 38:25Speaker 2: There's something you can do. You can bench him. Yeah.
- 38:29Speaker 2: But he knows it's not going to happen because Torrey
- 38:31Speaker 2: just said it. It's too important to the team. Right. So,
- 38:34Speaker 2: I mean, you can suspend him, but they're not going
- 38:36Speaker 2: to do that.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Nope.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Because Torrey Lovello just said it. He's too important to
- 38:39Speaker 2: the team. You know who knows that? Cattell Marte.
- 38:43Speaker 1: They tried to restrict and list him.
- 38:45Speaker 2: And he went on the IL, and now he's at
- 38:46Speaker 2: casinos on a game night.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 38:50Speaker 2: He's very private. Okay? He's private. Cool. Tell us where
- 38:53Speaker 2: you were.
- 38:53Speaker 1: He's not that private.
- 38:56Speaker 2: He's ripping roulette. I'm sorry. That's the thing about, listen,
- 39:00Speaker 2: I played for Torrey as a coach. Nice guy. Really,
- 39:04Speaker 2: really cares. You know, he's very positive.
- 39:07Speaker 1: People person.
- 39:08Speaker 2: People person. You know, but kumbaya, whatever you want to say.
- 39:12Speaker 2: But there are times where you just need to say, hey, Cattell,
- 39:15Speaker 2: we need to know where you're at and you need
- 39:16Speaker 2: to have a meeting with the team. And then you
- 39:18Speaker 2: know what you say to the media? Cattell told the team,
- 39:20Speaker 2: and then you know what his teammates will say? Hey,
- 39:21Speaker 2: it's between us. This is how it should go. And
- 39:23Speaker 2: then teammates can say, hey, it's between us. And it's
- 39:27Speaker 2: up to Cattell to say what he did, but at
- 39:28Speaker 2: least he told us and we're okay with it. But
- 39:32Speaker 2: to just say, oh, we're going to give him a
- 39:34Speaker 2: smooth entrance back because he's one of your best players.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Corbin Carroll ain't missing. Corbin Carroll broke his handmate and
- 39:41Speaker 2: the next day had surgery. He's out there throwing the
- 39:43Speaker 2: med ball against the wall. Where's Nolan Arnauto right now?
- 39:50Speaker 2: Nolan Arnauto was the guy who had to play and
- 39:51Speaker 2: be banged up because Cattell Marte didn't show up. This
- 39:56Speaker 2: doesn't just affect you. It affects other guys on your team.
- 40:03Speaker 1: We're looking at the week here thanks to SeatGeek. Now
- 40:06Speaker 1: I want to see Cubs Diamondbacks. Someone might want to
- 40:09Speaker 1: grab a ticket there for at least a series that
- 40:13Speaker 1: has a higher percentage chance of some beef than other series.
- 40:17Speaker 3: No.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Nothing will happen.
- 40:18Speaker 1: No.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Guys don't do that anymore. Guys don't do that anymore.
- 40:22Speaker 2: They don't, they don't retaliate. They don't, I don't care.
- 40:26Speaker 2: You know, Jeff Bannister, you know, Tory Lovello. I know
- 40:29Speaker 2: they're a little more old school, but they just don't do,
- 40:31Speaker 2: guys don't do this anymore. They don't throw at guys anymore.
- 40:34Speaker 2: It's very rare when a guy gets thrown at.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Jeff Bannister would fight.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Jeff Bannister was like in the Marines or something. He
- 40:39Speaker 2: used to do like those Marine workouts with his team.
- 40:42Speaker 5: I remember.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Wasn't he in the Marines? He was in something.
- 40:46Speaker 5: That's more of his Pirates player development background where they
- 40:54Speaker 5: used to jump in the sand and all that stuff.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Banny's a strong dude. I get it. He was the
- 41:00Speaker 2: one yelling at Flaherty. And Flaherty wasn't yelling, we're not
- 41:03Speaker 2: doing anything. Flaherty was yelling at him, fix it. You
- 41:07Speaker 2: know what?
- 41:08Speaker 5: If you think we're changing or we're sending signs, fix it.
- 41:12Speaker 5: So Yeah, that's a good series to go to. But,
- 41:15Speaker 5: I mean, come on.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Just go and seek geek.
- 41:17Speaker 5: And you can't, like, this is going to be the
- 41:19Speaker 5: Red Sox-Yankees series. Red Sox think they can catch the
- 41:24Speaker 5: Yankees and get home field advantage for the playoffs? That's
- 41:27Speaker 5: where you got to be.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Get on there.
- 41:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:30Speaker 2: No, but tonight it is the Braves. Braves-Dodgers. Glass now returning.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Bryce Elder, they need him to pitch well. I mean,
- 41:37Speaker 2: can the Braves catch the Dodgers or the Brewers for
- 41:40Speaker 2: the bye? That's the series right now is that the
- 41:45Speaker 2: one that matters tonight.
- 41:47Speaker 1: That's a hot race. Red Sox are finishing up. They'll
- 41:50Speaker 1: keep going for a couple days against the Marlins. And
- 41:54Speaker 1: the Yankees are taking on the Astros this week before Yankees.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Red Sox over the weekend. By the way, for Cubs
- 41:59Speaker 1: Diamondbacks the next couple days, the Tuesday night matchup is
- 42:03Speaker 1: Clay Holmes, newbie to the Cubs, and Brandon Fott, while
- 42:07Speaker 1: it's Eduardo Rodriguez and Matthew Boyd.
- 42:11Speaker 2: On Wednesday afternoon. He's been really good. He's sneaky good
- 42:13Speaker 2: this year.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Yeah, really good. So you know the code. Territory10. 10%
- 42:17Speaker 1: off MLB tickets on SeatGeek. Make sure you click the
- 42:20Speaker 1: link in the description of this episode. So you can
- 42:23Speaker 1: download the app if you don't have it. And then
- 42:25Speaker 1: the code's automatically added to your account. So you can
- 42:27Speaker 1: use it tonight. You can use it tomorrow. You can
- 42:28Speaker 1: use it in a week. Hey, we've been so busy
- 42:41Speaker 1: the last couple days. We didn't do a full-fledged injury suck,
- 42:45Speaker 1: but Andy Pahis could miss a good chunk of time
- 42:48Speaker 1: there for the Dodgers. Yeah, that sucks. That's a bad loss.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I know it's the Dodgers, but it's real.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Still a big loss. He's been good for them this year.
- 42:57Speaker 1: He's been really good. He was not good in the
- 42:59Speaker 1: playoffs for them last year until the catch.
- 43:02Speaker 2: You know what he did? He made the catch, and
- 43:04Speaker 2: they still won. So he did the one thing they
- 43:06Speaker 2: needed him to do in that series. He made that
- 43:08Speaker 2: one catch.
- 43:09Speaker 1: So we'll see what happens with him. And Otani's working
- 43:13Speaker 1: his way back. Could be really soon. Yeah. So just
- 43:17Speaker 1: some injury updates. Casey Mize fell down a stair.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Did you see the frustration on his face, dude? He
- 43:22Speaker 2: was so frustrated.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Yeah, because, well, then all of a sudden he's on
- 43:25Speaker 1: the mound. He's throwing like 88 on a sinker. And
- 43:28Speaker 1: they're like, all right, dude, what's going on?
- 43:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Yeah, he tripped. He rolled his ankle. So that happens.
- 43:35Speaker 2: What else? Jack Peterson got ejected yesterday for arguing the
- 43:40Speaker 2: ABS thing.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Yep. That's going to be fun in the playoffs when
- 43:44Speaker 1: someone challenges and the ump goes, nope, too slow. It's
- 43:48Speaker 1: like the guy that does a pie down low too slow.
- 43:51Speaker 1: You're going to have some ump do that and then
- 43:54Speaker 1: the world's going to end for 24 hours.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Or when they call a balk. Or if they call
- 43:59Speaker 2: a balk.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. So many things. Oh, we do have
- 44:06Speaker 1: time to run. Oh yeah, I didn't realize we have
- 44:08Speaker 1: five minutes. We do have time to run one of
- 44:10Speaker 1: the Injury territory clips. You know, it surprised us. Do
- 44:16Speaker 1: one of the Dodger ones. If you have it. Oh,
- 44:19Speaker 1: you need a second though. One of the Dodger ones,
- 44:21Speaker 1: Otani and Pahis. Let's start with Otani.
- 44:24Speaker 6: I think they're just going to see where he's comfortable.
- 44:27Speaker 6: They're going to say, you know, here's where his workload
- 44:30Speaker 6: tells you he can pitch. It's somewhere between zero and
- 44:34Speaker 6: 40 and they'll see where he goes. If he goes
- 44:37Speaker 6: one inning and 12 pitches, so be it. If he
- 44:39Speaker 6: goes 40 pitches and gets through three, four innings, so
- 44:42Speaker 6: be it. I don't think they can plan for anything,
- 44:46Speaker 6: and I think that's going to be the key. I
- 44:48Speaker 6: think Dave Roberts and Mark Pryor have so much confidence
- 44:51Speaker 6: in this team, in this medical staff, and in each other,
- 44:57Speaker 6: that they don't really have to have a plan per se.
- 45:01Speaker 6: They certainly don't have to put it together and say, one, two, three, four, five.
- 45:05Speaker 6: and here's the bullpen, and here's the closer, because they're
- 45:07Speaker 6: going to mix it up. I wish pitching chaos wasn't
- 45:11Speaker 6: already taken. We need to come up with another term
- 45:13Speaker 6: for what the Dodgers are going to do.
- 45:15Speaker 2: It's mix and match. It's puzzle pieces. But Otani, I
- 45:18Speaker 2: think getting.
- 45:19Speaker 6: Him in there this early, maybe a little bit unexpectedly,
- 45:24Speaker 6: tells us they're trying to figure out what he can do.
- 45:26Speaker 6: Are they building him up? Are they figuring out if
- 45:29Speaker 6: this role works with the rest of things? I think
- 45:31Speaker 6: it's the latter. I think they're still trying to figure
- 45:33Speaker 6: it out, and they're going to use... you know, the
- 45:36Speaker 6: last week of August here and all of September as
- 45:40Speaker 6: experimentation ground. They're just going to figure out what they got,
- 45:44Speaker 6: see how far they can get it. They'll do a
- 45:47Speaker 6: lot of resting and rotation and we'll see what they
- 45:51Speaker 6: come up with in October.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Same thing as they've always done. Yeah, that sounds like
- 45:57Speaker 2: a rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. Whatever they got
- 46:00Speaker 2: in October will be out there.
- 46:02Speaker 5: I think they gave him his shot. I think they
- 46:04Speaker 5: gave Otani, we talked about this, they gave Otani a shot.
- 46:07Speaker 5: Go win a Cy Young. We're going to keep you
- 46:10Speaker 5: on a six to seven day pitching rotation thing. If
- 46:14Speaker 5: you can get there, and he did his darndest to
- 46:18Speaker 5: try to win a Cy Young, and then when it
- 46:19Speaker 5: was out of reach, the standard things crop up. We're
- 46:24Speaker 5: going to shut you down, lead you back into being 100%
- 46:28Speaker 5: for the postseason.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Hey, Hot Sheet is coming up. At 3 o'clock Eastern
- 46:33Speaker 1: time today, the Baseball America show has Golden Spikes winner
- 46:36Speaker 1: and Rockies catching prospect Daniel Jackson. He was taken in
- 46:39Speaker 1: this past draft at 37th overall. Do you know that
- 46:43Speaker 1: he was the first catcher in D1 history to exceed
- 46:48Speaker 1: 25 homers and 25 stolen bases?
- 46:50Speaker 2: But he didn't get to 30-30. He wanted to get 30-30.
- 46:52Speaker 2: That was the big thing. He was trying to get
- 46:54Speaker 2: to 30-30. He didn't get there.
- 46:55Speaker 4: But 25-25?
- 46:55Speaker 2: No, 25-25 is unbelievable.
- 46:56Speaker 1: But he won at 30-30.
- 47:01Speaker 2: But he didn't get there.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Apparently, he didn't hit his first home run in high
- 47:08Speaker 1: school until halfway through his senior year.
- 47:12Speaker 2: The Rhino. Isn't his nickname the Rhino?
- 47:15Speaker 1: They said they were calling him in high school a
- 47:17Speaker 1: warning track demon. Well, look, he showed them now.
- 47:24Speaker 2: And then he went to Georgia where it's like 150
- 47:27Speaker 2: feet all around and was hitting bombs.
- 47:30Speaker 1: That's how the demon slays the dragon or whatever. Guest
- 47:34Speaker 1: taking up most of it today. So if you would
- 47:37Speaker 1: like to hear from a future 30-30 catcher, maybe, in
- 47:43Speaker 1: the big leagues, then go for it. You can listen
- 47:46Speaker 1: to him on Hot Sheet. Whether you predicted a home
- 47:53Speaker 1: run or game-saving strikeout, nothing quite feels like a little
- 47:56Speaker 1: parlay boost token on a bet. So you can activate
- 47:59Speaker 1: that on any MLB parlay if you've got the token
- 48:01Speaker 1: in there. Gambling problem or concern, there's help. Call 1-800-GAMBLER.
