- 0:55SPEAKER_07: I wasn't I wasn't injured.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: You weren't?
- 0:57SPEAKER_07: No.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, I somebody told me uh a concussion.
- 1:00SPEAKER_07: No, that was somebody else.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, somebody else.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: All right, thank goodness.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: So uh how's the season been for you?
- 1:05SPEAKER_07: Um it's been pretty good.
- 1:06SPEAKER_07: Everyone's been working hard.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: So why did your coach I mean I could read why your coach uh why do you think your coach nominated you for uh athlete of the week this week?
- 1:17SPEAKER_07: Um well I would say maybe because I'm a leader and I try to help everybody and try to give it my best.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: Um you guys have some games coming up, right?
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: Tell us what's going on.
- 1:28SPEAKER_07: Uh yeah, we have a double header today against Sunnyside.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Are you guys doing well?
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Are you winning?
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: Are you losing?
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: What what's going on?
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: We're okay.
- 1:37SPEAKER_07: We've won we won Davis both games, and then we've lost our other.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: I know you had some early games that had to be kind of scrubbed.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Are you are you finally kind of getting into the flow of things?
- 1:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah, we finally are getting getting with it, yeah.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Congratulations on that.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Now, are you gonna wear your medal for the rest of the day?
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Are you gonna put it somewhere so you don't lose it?
- 1:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'll put it away.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: It's okay.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: That's all right.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Uh we also have uh Adeline Jeffrey.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: So Adeline, the first freshman we've ever had on the podcast.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Congratulations.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: So uh talk right into that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: So tell us about uh your week and uh BJ Red, why your volleyball coach decided that you should be represented here.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: Talk about your week this past week.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Um, well, we have practice every day, and I don't know, the games have been pretty good.
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: We had games on Tuesday and Thursday, and Thursday was pretty late because we were out in Yakima, I believe, and we lost that game.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: But it was a fun game.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: I think both team all the teams played really good.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: I heard C team, I think, won the game, which was really good.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: So you this is your first year playing volleyball?
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: It is in high school.
- 2:41SPEAKER_04: I've played it for four years now.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Okay, all right.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: So you're a seasoned veteran by this point.
- 2:47unknown: I know.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: Uh well, congratulations to the both of you on this.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: And and I'm gonna, you know, I talked to you about uh pets and I talked about because you can't have pets because your sister's allergic, right?
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Did I get that right?
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: And we won't talk about your nickname.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Uh do you have a nickname?
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: Um my phone name is Adeline, but I go by Addie.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: But there's not really anything else.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: That's it?
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Just Addie.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: Addie Jeffrey.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: So did it call you AJ?
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: No.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: See, that would be an automatic to me.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that kind of would make sense.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: Well, ladies, congratulations.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, I've got one more here.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: Let's see.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: Uh, thanks to Weinstein Beverage.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: As being a guest on our podcast.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: You not only do you get that lovely metal to wear around your neck, but you get a Pepsi Zero.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: It's all the fun and none of the calories.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: So congratulations.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: And thanks and uh keep up the great work, okay?
- 3:35SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: We'll take a break, come back.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: We've got more of the Winanch Panther podcast coming up.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: In fact, we have uh the volleyball, or no, is cross-country coach.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: There we go.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: We've got Steve Roach coming up.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: We have Brooklyn, who is one of his runners.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: We also later on on the podcast will have girls soccer featured.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: We've got Sophia Garcia and Coach Ashton Kirkpatrick.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: It's all coming up here on the Winatchie Panther Podcast, brought to you by Les Schwab and our friends at TGR.

- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Turns out they really needed an oil change.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: It was done in a flash.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Road trip saved.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: At Les Schwab, we're proud to keep you rolling.

- 5:03SPEAKER_03: We continue on with the Winanche Panther podcast brought to you by Les Schwab and our new sponsor, TGR, and thanks to Trey Gooch Roofing for being involved with us.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: We've got Steve Roach here, who is the cross-country coach.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: I know your track coach in the springtime, teacher here at the high school.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: How's the year going so far?
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Really good.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, gosh, for us, uh previous years, like last year, I think we spent 50% of our practices indoors at Town Toyota Center.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: So smoke and we've had one, one of those days.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: So it's been a great year by those standards.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: And getting to train outside is really big for us.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: The kids make a lot of improvement there.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: A couple of Saturdays ago, I think it was you had your your hosted your invite, right?
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: For those that and I'm I'll I'll raise my hand.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: I've never been to a cross-country uh meet.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: How does that work and what happens?
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: And especially in a place like Walla Walla Point Park.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh it's amazing.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: If you ever, if you would ever want your faith in humanity restored, come to a high school cross-country meet because you have thousands of people from all over the state.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: Uh in our case, we had 26 high schools from all different directions of the state.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think it was 13 middle schools, uh almost 900 runners, and everyone else positive.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's no if you want to see sportsmanship, if you want to see uh people lifting each other up, and I mean it doesn't matter, you're the fastest kid of the slow skid, everyone's getting cheered, everyone's getting celebrated, and you see these kids that push themselves so hard and you just feel so good for them.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Like you know they did something really hard and you're just happy, it doesn't matter what school they're from.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: So it's really fun for us.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: In a contained environment, in a gymnasium or in a stadium or something like that, you usually have a PA system to kind of herd those cats.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: How in the world do you nail the jello on the tree there?
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: Uh it's schedule.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: We we were really clear about the schedule in advance.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: We do a coaches meeting in advance, so it's really a lot of it relies upon the coaches from other schools getting people to the right places at the right time.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Uh and then we do have a speaker that we use.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: It's you know, it's not the primary source, but you know, but it's as good as you know, whatever way somebody's listening, right?
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: And there's kids sometimes that uh lose focus, don't know what's going on, and they miss a race.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Gee, teenagers, you're kidding.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you'd be shocked.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: What's coming up for you guys?
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: So this weekend we're going down to Yakima, uh, Franklin Park.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: It's the Sunfair Invitational.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: It's uh one of the older invites in the state of Washington.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's great.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: It's it's where Eisenhower hosts their home meets, it's where our district meet is at this year, and that's one of the reasons we're going is give our kids a chance to run on the course that they will use to determine state.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's it's an iconic course.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: It's it's one of the ones as teams from all over the region come and there's some great talent, and um, it's a really challenging course.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Um, it's well known for its hills.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Um a lot of cross-country courses these days are pretty flat with a few rolling hills.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: This one's got some serious hills, and especially the terraces.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: If you ask any cross-country kid, they'll talk about the terraces because it's it's intense.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: And um when you have a meet like that, everybody's running the same distance, or do you have short distance runs?
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: Do you have long distance?
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh I don't know.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh most kids run five uh well, uh normal meets five K's is kind of the standard distance.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Um uh this course at Franklin Pars has been around for 50 plus years.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: The standard used to be three miles back then, and so it was three miles, and they've kept it that for the sake of tradition.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Uh they do offer like a two-mile race for younger kids that are getting their feet wet, getting used to the sport.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: So, but I would say 90% of our kids will be running three miles this weekend.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, five Ks are normal.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: I have uh run across you, sorry to use that uh nice part.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: Uh came across you guys out on the track.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Um tell us about practice.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: And and I I hear you that you're timing them, they're going around the track and things like that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: I'm like to me in my mind, well, cross-country, you're running that 5k every day, but that's not the case, right?
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: No, different purposes for different days.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Uh like yesterday, for example, one of our big things that we're really lucky is we're so close to the the canal and we can do a lot of running on the canal.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: It's you know fairly free of interference, road crossings, but it's you know, it's a really good place for us to train.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: But some days we're on the track, like today, we're going down uh to Lincoln Park and doing hills.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Um and so that was my next question.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: How do you prepare for what you're gonna face down at Yacabal this weekend?
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: That's exactly it.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Uh find good hills.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: And we've got a couple around around town that we like to do, and Lincoln Park's great because it simulates Franklin Park really well.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: It's got, if you're familiar, behind the stage, there's a pretty big hill that we can go up several times and simulate what that same thing is.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: And it's just like any sport, right?
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: You try to put yourself into the same conditions that you're gonna see on game day meet day.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, so we'll do hills probably once a week, and uh it's a great way to build strength too, and um, it's definitely get some ready.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: On these meets, uh, you know, you go down Walla Wall Point Park, I assume you're on the loop trail for the most part, so you got a nice paved path, that type of thing.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: No.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: We avoid that.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Oh um, if for one, uh cross country is ideally on grass.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: They have rules about you can run across concrete, but it can't be for more than typically three steps in a row.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: So we tr we we cross the path in a couple places, but the course, generally speaking, starts if you're if you're familiar, like Walla Park, there's the there's the playground, there's shelter one, and there's shelter two.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Our starting line is kind of between the two shelters.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: And between that spot, there's a bump, there's a hill.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: That's our finish hill.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: So they take off going down um south towards like the Linden Tree area, they do a turnaround, they come back across the path, they kind of hug the beach actually, and then turn around.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: There's the we call it the coyote statue out there, they come back around that, and then around the tennis courts, and then they double loop it.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: So it's actually our course is pretty good as far as um uh spectators.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: A lot of courses like they they disappear and you never see them again, and you see them at the finish, but this one is pretty great for being able to see the kids.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Are they still is Sunwell still state?
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Or okay.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: And that's a golf course.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Yep, golf course.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: And kind of a rolling, but flat er.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a challenging course.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: They they've redesigned it several times.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: I've only played it using a cart, so what would I know?
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: It's got a lot of rolling hills, like like I tell our kids uh that course is a death by a thousand cuts.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Like there's there's there's one decent hill, but it's not that bad.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: But you do so many little hills over and over that it just takes it out of your legs.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: And they've redesigned it to be more spectator friendly, and when they did so, they added the big hill three times.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Oh so they've kind of made it more challenging.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: So sure.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: When you are going through your season and you have those routes, I mean you can't always dictate that every step is going to be nice and a nice place to put your foot.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: So you got rolled ankles, you got those types of things and everything else.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Have you had that?
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: And are you guys able to overcome those?
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Or yeah, and that's the challenge.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Um, ideally, in a perfect world, we you know, our track is not the best for um uh preventing injuries.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: We get a lot of shin splints, a lot of IT bands, and so we try not to do that too much.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, but that's the that's the flip side.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: If you're out running on grass, you're running on trails, um, it is uneven ground.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: We've got probably two or three kids there right now that are dealing with rolled ankles and coming back from that.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: So it's a trade-off.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: There's no such thing as a perfect, you know, uh environment.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: We like getting to parks just because the ground is softer uh whenever we can, but yeah, that's definitely a big concern for us.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: And I noticed briefly in in the runs I've seen you guys do, just you know, in in those timed runs around the track, that type of thing, that you're using your own athletes to spur other athletes.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Is that true?
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: We group them up.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Uh we've got a couple different groups kind of from you know, age and ability.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: And so the kids are running with other kids that are about in their same ability group.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: And so that's one thing, and they they compete against each other, they train with each other, they make each other better.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: Um, and we can also kind of scaffold it so that the younger kids are getting what's appropriate and good for them and helping them to get better.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Um, but also those faster, you know, higher level kids are also pushing each other to get better as well.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: That's fantastic.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and you know, give a leadership role to some of those kids too that might not normally get that.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Yep, absolutely.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: And the kids, like I said, they they use each other to uh, you know, that they they've got a group that they typically run with, and they know that I'm tend to be faster, slower than that kid, and today, you know, that kid's better, so I need to get better too.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: And uh and we don't um when in our groupings, one of the great things about us being co-ed is um we we just group by ability.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: So guys and girls run together.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Um Brooklyn, who you're gonna see in a little bit, um, she runs with our varsity guys um because she's really good and she's having a great season, and I think that that makes her better too, because she's constantly getting pushed and pushed.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it's a definite advantage to use that uh group them by abilities and give them to push each other.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: You uh jumped ahead on me because that was my next question.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Tell me a little bit about how do you pronounce her last name?
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: Biewer.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: Um tell me a little bit about her and what she means to your cross-country team.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, she's amazing.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Um, she did not do cross-country last year, so she's new to us.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, she did track in the spring, came out and she ended up one of our top distance girls by the end of the year.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: We said, Hey, Brooklyn, man, you need to get out for cross.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: This would be a great fit for you.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: And she went for it and she threw herself in 100%.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: She had an incredible summer.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Um, us going out and training, she was there a ton and was working super hard, and it's totally paying off.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: She's now one of the top uh girls in the district and hoping to make it to state.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: So um it's a pretty neat story, just from a kid that didn't do cross last year to you know hoping to qualify for state and do some damage there.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: How does your season change as it gets colder?
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: What what's the the I guess precautionary measures you have to take of stretching and everything else?
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Uh layers.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: I mean the thing is when you're running, your your body temperature heats up quite a bit.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: So it's not as big a deal when you're running, it's the warming up and cooling down.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: And I always got to remind kids bring your layers, you can take them off, and that kind of thing.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: And like you said, stretching and cooling down after a race become all the more important as the weather cools down.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, and I'm again, I'm not a runner.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: You probably can tell that.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: Uh but I do uh hunt and I know that it's very important to watch your core temperature after you get all sweaty and everything else.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: You get some of these meets later on in October, I imagine that that's probably a hammer almost that you have with them, is that, okay, you need to make sure that you, even though you're sweaty right now, watch your temperature.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Yep, exactly.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Uh a lot of kids after a race don't they don't think about that.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: They're tired, they're sweaty, they're, you know, all these other things, and they're thinking about that.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: But yeah, your your temperature cools down a lot.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: And we've had some meats that get down in, you know, late October, November that are in the 40s and 50s, and your body temperature cools off really fast.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: So that's definitely it's funny.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: We start off the year too hot and worried about heat, you know.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Right, and smoke and everything else.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: And then it flips the opposite at the end of the season.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Well, best of luck down at Yakima.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: It's good to see you again.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: And uh we look forward to talking to Brooklyn.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: We'll we'll see what Brooklyn has to say about our coach here, too.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: So Steve, good to see you.

- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: We've got Brooklyn Buer.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: Now you're going to see the name spelled on the bottom of your screen.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: And if you're anything like me, you're like, what?
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: That's how you pronounce that?
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Buer, what what is that?
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Do you know your heritage on your name?
- 17:23SPEAKER_08: I'm not really sure.
- 17:24SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 17:25SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: That's a note for you to find out.
- 17:28SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: Um first of all, welcome.
- 17:31SPEAKER_08: Ah, thank you.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: Uh have you ever been on a podcast or anything like this before?
- 17:35SPEAKER_08: Um I've done it for like um some CTSOs.
- 17:38SPEAKER_08: I've done like events where you like do podcasts.
- 17:40SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 17:41SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 17:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: Anything that's like out on the airwave somewhere, are we gonna find that to you as a guest on a podcast or are you gonna host a podcast?
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Or no?
- 17:51SPEAKER_08: No.
- 17:51SPEAKER_08: Um you just like submit it as um an entry to go to state.
- 17:55SPEAKER_08: So yeah.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Well, I wanted to talk to you about going from track, because your coach just told us that he saw you on the on the track last spring and said, you know, you should really do cross.
- 18:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: What was there a thought or was it like, yeah, sure, I'll do that?
- 18:12SPEAKER_08: Um at first I was a little like nervous to do it because I was like, it's really it's not that far, but I thought it was pretty far of a distance going from like a mile and like the two mile to like a 5k, which is like 3.1 miles.
- 18:25SPEAKER_08: So I thought that was a big jump, but once I like really thought about it and I saw like kind of last season and how that went, I thought it would be like just a fun experience and something to try out.
- 18:37SPEAKER_08: So yeah.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: So he said that you worked during the summertime.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: So what did you do in the summer?
- 18:42SPEAKER_08: Um, I ran a lot.
- 18:44SPEAKER_08: I probably ran like 200 to 300 miles.
- 18:47SPEAKER_08: I um I did a lot of long.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: Two to three hundred miles.
- 18:51SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 18:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Not all at once, I hope.
- 18:53SPEAKER_08: No, not all at once.
- 18:54SPEAKER_08: Um I tried to do like twenty-five miles a week-ish.
- 18:58SPEAKER_08: Um around there.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: So you're doing about five miles a day then?
- 19:02SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 19:02SPEAKER_08: Um give or take, yeah.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 19:05SPEAKER_08: And so around yeah, like mid to low twenty-five.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: So okay, I you're sophomore in high school.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: When did you realize that running is kind of like, oh, I like this?
- 19:16SPEAKER_08: Um, I did it in fifth grade and sixth grade, and then in seventh and eighth grade I stopped.
- 19:22SPEAKER_08: And then I wasn't gonna do it last year, but my mom was like, Oh, you should just try it.
- 19:28SPEAKER_08: And so I did it last year and I thought it was really fun, and I ended up quitting gymnastics, and then I decided to continue running.
- 19:35SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 19:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Do you have runners in your family?
- 19:38SPEAKER_08: No.
- 19:38SPEAKER_08: No?
- 19:38SPEAKER_08: Well, okay.
- 19:39SPEAKER_08: My dad ran in high school, but that was it.
- 19:42SPEAKER_08: That's a couple years ago.
- 19:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: So are you in j you you look like you're enjoying it?
- 19:47SPEAKER_08: Yes, I really enjoy it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: So um tell me about this year so far.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: It's your first year doing cross country and doing those competitions and then getting to the meets and things like that.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: How's it been?
- 19:58SPEAKER_08: Um, it's been really fun.
- 19:59SPEAKER_08: I really like the team aspect, and I really I think it's like a fun experience.
- 20:05SPEAKER_08: And the meets have been kind of like I didn't expect them to be as like crowded as they were.
- 20:11SPEAKER_08: Like the start line is definitely very intimidating.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Well, he was talking about the the meet that you guys hosted down at Wallworth Point Park.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: There's like a thousand runners or something.
- 20:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah, there were kids there.
- 20:22SPEAKER_08: That's crazy.
- 20:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: So have you built any friendships of people that you didn't know before you decided to start doing this?
- 20:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 20:29SPEAKER_08: I have a lot of friends from like Eastmouth and West Valley and Moses Lake and Sunnyside.
- 20:35SPEAKER_08: I've gotten a lot of friends from those schools just from like meeting them at Meets and running against them.
- 20:39SPEAKER_08: So yeah.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: You're you're heading down to Yakima this weekend, right?
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: And uh you probably being new to cross-country, haven't seen this course yet.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: I have not.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: I just your coach was just saying there's uh killer hills involved or something like that.
- 20:52SPEAKER_08: Yes, I think.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: So does that scare you or what's your thought?
- 20:55SPEAKER_08: Um I ran a lot of hills this summer, and so I'm not that nervous because I like I kind of I enjoy running hills.
- 21:03SPEAKER_08: Like I know that's kind of weird, but I like hills.
- 21:06SPEAKER_08: Like I've never ran like a very hilly course, but during practice, like I enjoy running the hills, so I think that'll be a new experience.
- 21:14SPEAKER_08: So yeah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: Is it I mean, y obviously you think about it, it's like, okay, trying to get up, that's that's hard.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: But for us old people with bad joints, going downhill is what hurts the most.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Do you find that you have you obviously you have to run your strides are different as you're going up and versus going down?
- 21:31SPEAKER_08: Um, so when you run uphill, you kind of it's for me, it's like obviously that's the hard part of the run, and that's where I'm like really pushing.
- 21:39SPEAKER_08: And then downhill, a lot of people like they tend to let up, but I try and continue to push on those downhills because it gives you a lot of momentum.
- 21:46SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 21:47SPEAKER_08: And so like that is where you can like start getting you like kind of can drop seconds there, and people might add seconds on those hills, but I really try and push the downhill part.
- 21:56SPEAKER_08: So yeah.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: When did you first start timing yourself?
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: On those distances like that.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: Were you doing that this summer?
- 22:03SPEAKER_08: Um, for my long runs, like during the summer, I was just like, And are you just like yeah on my watch?
- 22:08SPEAKER_08: I would just like kind of just be I would do mileage more than I would time like it.
- 22:13SPEAKER_08: So yeah, but then during track like all of those, a lot of stuff was timed, and so I would do like time trials like just during the summer to see how fast I could go um and see like kind of what I needed to work on, like where I was falling short.
- 22:27SPEAKER_08: So that definitely helped a lot, like time-wise.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: Okay, a lot of strategy involved.
- 22:31SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: So how has this fall been so far?
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: I think what you've had two meets, three meets?
- 22:36SPEAKER_08: Uh we've had three.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: Three meets.
- 22:38SPEAKER_08: So they've been pretty good.
- 22:39SPEAKER_08: Um at Ellensburg, it was a little a little rough because it was my first meet, but I think our team placed 10th, um, like our relay team, and then our Wenatchee invite.
- 22:50SPEAKER_08: I got fifth place, so that was exciting.
- 22:52SPEAKER_06: Awesome.
- 22:53SPEAKER_08: And then we just had oh, we've had four meets, actually.
- 22:56SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay.
- 22:56SPEAKER_08: Um, and then we had our like conference meet, not districts, but like just one of the conference meets, and I got eighth, and then we had our Nike invitational, and I got twenty-fourth.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: Which was huge, right?
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of people in that race.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: So your coach, Steve, was saying that you r you were running with the boys.
- 23:17SPEAKER_08: I do, yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: In practice and stuff like that.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: You're just that fast?
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, do you like that?
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: You're like, uh-huh, I'll show you boys.
- 23:27SPEAKER_08: Um I definitely like it because I think they're fast as well, and they definitely make me run faster.
- 23:33SPEAKER_08: And so I kind of do it to like push myself, and I definitely like the challenge of running with people that are faster than me.
- 23:40SPEAKER_08: So Okay.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Is this you think this is gonna be something you're gonna do for the rest of your life?
- 23:44SPEAKER_08: Um, I would like to.
- 23:45SPEAKER_08: I really enjoy it, but I mean we'll see where the wind takes me.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: So, Yakima, what's your what's your goal for uh I mean, is it uh how you place or is it how you finish versus timing that you've had before?
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: It's the first time you're gonna run this course, so you can't really judge yourself, can you?
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:03SPEAKER_08: Um I would like to PR, but I know that the course necessarily isn't like the it's a very hilly course, so compared to like the Nike Me or Wenatchie's course, those are a lot more like flat courses.
- 24:15SPEAKER_08: Um and so like with it being hilly, it's gonna be a lot harder to PR.
- 24:20SPEAKER_08: But placement wise, I think I don't know what division I'm running in yet, so there's like varsity gold and varsity silver, and I'm not sure if I'm running gold or silver because I think our team's running silver.
- 24:31SPEAKER_08: Um and I think you might have to run with your team, but we're still figuring that out.
- 24:34SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 24:35SPEAKER_08: Um and so I'm not really sure place wise, but I think I really just want to go out there and give 'em my best.
- 24:41SPEAKER_08: And yeah.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: How are you on eating and making sure that you're you're you're caloried up, but you're not overdone, you know, that type of thing.
- 24:50SPEAKER_08: Um I have gotten really into like making sure I'm eating the right things this summer.
- 24:55SPEAKER_08: So like a lot of my I try and balance out my meals and like plan them out at the beginning of the week.
- 25:00SPEAKER_08: Um, I try and like I don't necessarily track it because I think that that could maybe not turn out good, but I try and like make sure like I'm getting the a good amount and then making sure it's the right calories.
- 25:11SPEAKER_08: Like I don't want calories that are just from a bunch of sugar.
- 25:14SPEAKER_08: Like, yeah.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: So have you learned this how?
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: How have you learned this?
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: Because there's adults out there that don't know how to do this.
- 25:22SPEAKER_08: So I I went to UW to pole vault for a camp and we learned about nutrition a little bit there.
- 25:28SPEAKER_08: Um and then I kind of just tried to research it on my own and figure out what works best for me because I think for everyone it's a little different.
- 25:37SPEAKER_08: So I just tried to figure out what works best for me.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: Um Do you have a nickname?
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Your name's Brooklyn.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: D do you go by Brook?
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: Do you go by Brooklyn?
- 25:45SPEAKER_08: I go by Brooklyn.
- 25:46SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 25:47SPEAKER_08: So I just go Okay.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Does anybody do you have a nickname?
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Your parents call you something that uh No.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: No?
- 25:53SPEAKER_08: You're not Brookie or Um My Old Teammates called me Brookie B, but Okay.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: I mean you do have the BB going.
- 26:00SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 26:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Um if you have any free time, I know you're probably busy with running and with school and everything else.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: What do you like to do?
- 26:09SPEAKER_08: Um Well, I like to do that.
- 26:13SPEAKER_08: Um definitely a lot of schoolwork and I like to talk to my friends and like all like um I like to hang out with my friends in my free time.
- 26:21SPEAKER_08: I think that's like kind of what I film.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: So do you guys go somewhere?
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: Do you hang out at somebody's house or going down to get coffee or anything like that?
- 26:29SPEAKER_08: I think it depends.
- 26:30SPEAKER_08: Like some friends, like it kind of just depends on the hangout.
- 26:34SPEAKER_08: Like we'll go on a hike, or we'll go to the coffee shop, or we'll go to Target, or we'll just go to their house.
- 26:39SPEAKER_08: So it kind of just depends on or like some friends I'll go on a run with.
- 26:43SPEAKER_08: Like it just depends.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it depends on where that group of friends comes from, right?
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Um I know you're just a sophomore in high school, but do you have an idea what you want to do?
- 26:53SPEAKER_08: I do not.
- 26:53SPEAKER_08: I'm not sure yet.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: That's okay.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: You got a lot of time.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: How are you liking your experience at Winancha High School?
- 26:59SPEAKER_08: Um, I'm enjoying it.
- 27:00SPEAKER_08: I think it's definitely a lot different from middle school.
- 27:03SPEAKER_08: A lot more like a lot more like hard work.
- 27:06SPEAKER_08: But I'm enjoying it and I'm enjoying being challenged in my classes.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: You have a favorite subject?
- 27:11SPEAKER_08: I really like math.
- 27:12SPEAKER_08: Math is my favorite class.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, have you always been pretty good with numbers?
- 27:16SPEAKER_08: Um I like to think so, yeah.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: So what's what what level of math are you in right now?
- 27:22SPEAKER_08: Um, I'm taking pre-calc.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: Pre-calc is a sophomore in high school.
- 27:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 27:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: Kids.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Smart.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: Well, I don't know if you drink it or not, but this is your gift.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: You can give this to somebody else if you wish.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: It's Pepsi Zero.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, all the flavor and none of the calories.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: So there you go.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: Um, that's thanks to Weinstein Beverage for doing that.
- 27:44SPEAKER_03: And thank you for being a guest on our podcast.
- 27:46SPEAKER_08: Thank you for having me.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: And we look forward to many good things from you, not only for the rest of this cross-country season, but for coming up in the spring too and track.
- 27:53SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: You bet.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: There you go.

- 29:12SPEAKER_03: The Winanchu Panther Podcast continues here on KKRV 1047.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: We're going to talk soccer.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: The beautiful game, right?
- 29:19SPEAKER_09: Great game.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: Did you were you like growing up?
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Did you hear of the whole beautiful game thing or um yeah?
- 29:26SPEAKER_09: My dad was like, he played soccer his whole life.
- 29:29SPEAKER_09: So my family's been like around soccer.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: By the way, we're talking with Sophia Garcia, who's a senior with the Panthers uh girls' soccer team.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: You guys are on a roll right now.
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: In fact, haven't given up a goal in what two weeks or better.
- 29:44SPEAKER_09: I think so, yeah.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: Congratulations.
- 29:46SPEAKER_09: Yeah, no, thank you.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: So talk about this season coming in.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: We'll we'll get to what we're doing this week and and everything else.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Um, but as you came in, you probably had a feeling that, okay, we did well last year.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: We got to the state tournament, didn't get as far as you wanted to.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: So what was your goal going in as a person and and as a team?
- 30:06SPEAKER_09: I think as a person, I think I just wanted to really enjoy the season because it's my senior year.
- 30:11SPEAKER_09: Um but as a team, I feel like, yeah, we knew we made it to state, but I feel like our goal is always to make it past first round.
- 30:18SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.
- 30:19SPEAKER_09: So I feel like coming in this season, it wasn't, oh, let's try and beat like East Small, let's try and beat these teams.
- 30:24SPEAKER_09: It's like every practice we're just trying to prepare for like next week Lake Stevens, or to try and get somewhere past first round of the state.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Um with that and looking at who you had coming back, because you had mostly everybody coming back, right?
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: I think you only lost like two players.
- 30:41SPEAKER_09: Yeah, two seniors.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: And so you had to feel pretty confident about that, didn't you?
- 30:45SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean they were two really important seniors, though.
- 30:47SPEAKER_09: It was like our center back, two of our main defenders, but I mean, we did have like pretty good like incoming freshmen.
- 30:55SPEAKER_09: So I felt like the chemistry was still there between all of us, but it did still kind of hurt to lose those two players.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: Tell me about playing for Ashton.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, she is she has come right out in this podcast, even and said, you know, I'm tough.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: I'm tough on the girls.
- 31:09SPEAKER_09: I think she's a great coach, like overall.
- 31:11SPEAKER_09: Um, I think it's like I think having a good coach like her has given us the success that we have.
- 31:19SPEAKER_09: And I feel like at the same time in high school, especially like some players on our team that are gonna go play later on in college, I think it's kind of good that she's tough to prepare us for the next level.
- 31:28SPEAKER_09: Sure.
- 31:28SPEAKER_09: Because I feel like if you really want to make it past Rosana State, you have to have like a tough coach and be serious about it, not just, oh, it's like all laugh and giggles.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: How long have you been playing soccer since you were like l little?
- 31:39SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I was like four years old.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: So a long time.
- 31:42unknown: Yeah.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: So are you one of those that's also playing club soccer and playing high school and all that kind of trying to balance itself?
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: What's the difference for those that don't know?
- 31:55SPEAKER_09: Yeah, okay.
- 31:56SPEAKER_09: So WFA is just like my team here.
- 31:59SPEAKER_09: I've been playing s since like sixth grade.
- 32:02SPEAKER_09: And I feel like it's less competitive, and then over there in Seattle, it's like an ACNL RL team-ish.
- 32:08SPEAKER_09: And it I feel like it gives more like advantages of like coaches to come watch you.
- 32:13SPEAKER_09: So it does a lot with the traveling and all that, but I think it's very worth it.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: Uh you you said that you saw me interview one of your teammates, and uh probably the same question for you, but you don't have to play high school ball to be able to go on and play in college and things like that.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Because there's a lot of that recruiting and a lot of that looking is happening at the club level and things like that, and travel ball and and stuff.
- 32:36SPEAKER_03: So why do you play high school ball?
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:39SPEAKER_09: I think I play for like the memories, like just being I just I'm great friends with all the girls on the team, and I feel like playing high school sports is probably one of the best things about high school and just being involved in the school, like with sports and all that, I think it's just it's really fun and it's different from club.
- 32:55SPEAKER_09: It gives you like a good break from club as well.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: There's uh and you know, BJ has had a a big role in this and and she's trying to really kind of help with this culture.
- 33:04SPEAKER_03: Uh it you know, probably important for you and your senior year too, this whole we are a Wanatchie thing and and being a Panther and stuff.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: What does that mean to you?
- 33:12SPEAKER_09: I think it means a lot, I mean, especially me, because I was from Eastwamp and I transferred my sophomore year.
- 33:18SPEAKER_09: So I think it just means a lot to be a Panther because it is I think it's a pretty good school, pretty good community.
- 33:24SPEAKER_09: So I think it's a pleasure being a Panther.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: What's your future?
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: You're gonna play soccer next level?
- 33:29SPEAKER_09: I'm hoping.
- 33:30SPEAKER_09: It's still not fully decided, but hopefully it's decided soon if I will or not.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Is that based on you or is that based on somebody out there that has yet to knock on your door and say, hey, we want you to come play with us?
- 33:43SPEAKER_09: It's kind of just more based on me, because I know playing at that other level is very competitive and it's a really big deal.
- 33:50SPEAKER_09: And I feel like, especially my parents, they have like a big part on it.
- 33:53SPEAKER_09: Like they're super helpful and all that.
- 33:54SPEAKER_09: And my mom's like, Oh, you need to go for academics because you never know, like an injury.
- 33:58SPEAKER_09: And my dad, he's a big soccer guy, so he's like, No, like I want you to go for soccer.
- 34:02SPEAKER_09: So I feel like it's just do I want to go for my academics or do I actually want to take the next level in place.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: So that you know, that depends on where you go and what you want to do with your education.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: What would you like to do with your education?
- 34:14SPEAKER_09: So first I wanted to go into law because I would want to go specifically into immigration law, but I was like when I started talking like to coaches and all that, I was like, okay, like maybe I do want to go for soccer, and I feel like doing law and soccer would be just a lot.
- 34:29SPEAKER_09: So if I were to go in for soccer, I think I would want to major in psychology.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 34:34SPEAKER_09: Most likely, yeah.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: Tell me about soccer and heritage and culture.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: Because that's a thing, right?
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: I'm not just making that up.
- 34:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 34:45SPEAKER_09: Well, I don't know.
- 34:46SPEAKER_09: In my family, like two of my cousins, they, Edgar and Aaron, they play for Shadow U.
- 34:51SPEAKER_09: Um, my dad, he was gonna go pro.
- 34:53SPEAKER_09: Um, my both of my brothers played, like, my family's just so in soccer, and so I felt like it's not that I was forced to be in it, it just naturally came.
- 35:01SPEAKER_09: Because I did multiple sports growing up, but soccer was just always that sport.
- 35:05SPEAKER_09: I was like, I want to play this, like this is what I love.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: Having older brothers like that, and does that help your competitive level?
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: Because you're like, I wanna I wanna challenge the boys.
- 35:15SPEAKER_09: Not really, because I feel like with my brothers, it wasn't like, oh, you know, those siblings that like fight.
- 35:21SPEAKER_09: It was like always like super supportive.
- 35:23SPEAKER_09: Um, so it was always like if anything, it's oh let's go practice together, let's go play together.
- 35:28SPEAKER_09: It was never oh, like I need to be better than my brothers.
- 35:31SPEAKER_09: It was let me try and be at least like them.
- 35:33SPEAKER_09: But it turns out I'm better than both.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: What i i from their play to your play, what have you learned or picked up from them that has made you better, a better soccer player?
- 35:43SPEAKER_09: I think so for my middle brother, because I would say for my middle brother is to just be more confident because he's a left-footed player.
- 35:52SPEAKER_09: And so with him I try and work more on my left, but he's always just been like, you need to be more confident on the ball.
- 35:58SPEAKER_09: Like every game, if I don't shoot, he's like, Why didn't you shoot?
- 36:00SPEAKER_09: Like stuff like that.
- 36:01SPEAKER_09: So it's just be more confident as a player.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: How much pride do you take in the fact that you guys have shut out what four teams, five teams in a row, something like that?
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: I mean or is it I mean, what was your last game?
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: Eight-nil or something?
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, a couple of games ago, it was eight-nil.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, which means more to you, scoring more or not giving up anything?
- 36:22SPEAKER_09: Uh I don't know.
- 36:24SPEAKER_09: I think I think just as a team, as long as we play well.
- 36:27SPEAKER_09: Like, I mean, we just played Eastwant.
- 36:28SPEAKER_09: I mean, people ask to score one zero and they're like, why was it one zero?
- 36:32SPEAKER_09: But I think to us, if you really watch the game, I think what really matters is who is able to control the ball better, who's able to connect more passes.
- 36:40SPEAKER_09: I don't think the score ever really matters.
- 36:42SPEAKER_09: Because I think it's more also about being humble and staying humble, like, oh yeah, you guys want eight zero, but let's stay humble because you never know how the next game will go.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: You had a home playoff game last year.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: I'm sure that's that's pretty awesome to be able to play on the home field, especially with it getting cold and make one of those West Side teams come over here.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: I just saw the RPI, you guys are ranked third.
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: Do you pay attention to that?
- 37:04SPEAKER_09: Somewhat.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: Well, you just said, oh really.
- 37:06SPEAKER_09: Yeah, okay.
- 37:06SPEAKER_09: I pay attention to it when it like comes out on Instagram, but I don't go out of my way to look at it.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 37:11SPEAKER_09: Because I do think their rankings are a little odd.
- 37:13SPEAKER_09: It's weird.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: It's weird.
- 37:14SPEAKER_09: But to be third, I mean that's nice.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: Um which impacts how you get seated if you're lucky enough to get past your district and get into the state tournament and those types of things.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: Do you do teammates pay attention?
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Does coach say anything about it, or just it's just it is what it is.
- 37:33SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I think well, when it comes closer to state, we do pay attention to it because it's like obviously you want a home game because traveling does kind of suck.
- 37:41SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 37:42SPEAKER_09: And the l or you get to play as a seed is great because then you have a bigger chance of advancing.
- 37:48SPEAKER_09: So I think during the season we don't really try to pay attention to it.
- 37:51SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 37:51SPEAKER_09: But obviously if the topic comes up, we talk about it more towards the end.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: Um if you have any free time, and I don't know if you do or not, what do you like to do?
- 38:00SPEAKER_09: Um, well, I mean, just soccer, honestly.
- 38:02SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 38:03SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 38:04SPEAKER_09: Just soccer or work.
- 38:05SPEAKER_09: I love my job.
- 38:06SPEAKER_03: So Okay, where do you work?
- 38:07SPEAKER_09: Dutch Bros.
- 38:08SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 38:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: Another Dutch Brothers.
- 38:10SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: We had the brothers, I think.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: Talking about uh Dutch Bros.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: So the brothers that are in Dutch Brothers.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: Uh Panny O2s.
- 38:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: Uh huh.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Do they work at the same one you do?
- 38:20SPEAKER_09: No, they work at West by the Walgreens.
- 38:22SPEAKER_09: I work by the Gateway Cinema.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: What's your favorite part about working there?
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: I think just the It's it's like very different from other not that there's anything bad about the other coffee stands, but it's very different on on the field and the vibe you get when you drive up.
- 38:38SPEAKER_09: Yeah, no, it is very different.
- 38:40SPEAKER_09: I would say the employees, because especially like your regulars, like right away you know their orders, conversations.
- 38:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 38:46SPEAKER_09: And it's just like it's just like when you get hired, they're like, oh, like we it's we're not hiring for like if you can make coffee, it's like if you can interact with people and just have a good basically.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: Okay, for future uh um fell maybe employees of Dutch Bros.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: Um so I always ask everybody the same question.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: Do you have a nickname?
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: Um or is that not a thing anymore?
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: I keep asking everybody and they go, nope, don't have one.
- 39:10SPEAKER_09: I mean sof, sofie.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: All right, so yeah.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:14SPEAKER_09: Mostly go by soap.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's yeah.
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: I would I would if that was me, I'd worry about their calling me a sofa.
- 39:22SPEAKER_09: A sofa.
- 39:23SPEAKER_09: I know.
- 39:24SPEAKER_09: Michael always like made fun of me for that.
- 39:27SPEAKER_09: And I'm like, guys, it's noise.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: Uh any animals?
- 39:32SPEAKER_09: No, I don't.
- 39:32SPEAKER_09: You don't?
- 39:33SPEAKER_09: No.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: Would you wish to have an animal?
- 39:37SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 39:37SPEAKER_09: Like a dog or a cat?
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 39:40SPEAKER_09: A golden retriever and a husky.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, why a golden retriever or a husky?
- 39:44SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 39:44SPEAKER_09: Golden retriever, because they're just so like kind, so gentle.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: So you must have been around them.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: No.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: Somebody else.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: Oh, you haven't?
- 39:51SPEAKER_09: No.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: Just from what you've seen.
- 39:52SPEAKER_09: From what I've seen.
- 39:53SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 39:53SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 39:53SPEAKER_09: And a husky, because I just love their eyes.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:57SPEAKER_09: And I feel they're just also just really calm.
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: So you're not going to give us a hint on maybe what's happening college-wise, or are you going to you're going to make an announcement sometime or another?
- 40:08SPEAKER_09: Um I mean.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: Because I imagine that you trying to decide and trying to play your senior year and all that, that's a lot.
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: It is a lot.
- 40:14SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 40:14SPEAKER_09: I mean, especially with running start and all that stuff.
- 40:17SPEAKER_09: It is a lot.
- 40:18SPEAKER_09: Um, so finding time to really decide is kind of difficult.
- 40:21SPEAKER_09: But I'm trying to prioritize that because I'm trying to decide soon.
- 40:24SPEAKER_09: Um if I were to decide though it'd be somewhere here in state.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:27SPEAKER_09: Most likely in Seattle for sure, though.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: Well, it'd be closer to your brother or something.
- 40:32SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Good.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Well, it's nice to meet you.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: Best of luck the rest of the season.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: Stay healthy.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: Healthy, that's the most important thing, right?
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: And uh they've as we tape this, it's Tuesday.
- 40:42SPEAKER_03: You guys are getting ready to get on a bus and head to Moses Lake.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Moses Lake, yep.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: And then uh what is it, Ike after that?
- 40:48SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: And then Lake Stevens next week.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: I don't I didn't see him on the poll.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: Like 10, 15, something like that.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: So um is that do you even think about that, or is that just eh, we'll get to that next week?
- 41:01SPEAKER_09: Well, I feel like these like this whole practice this week, I feel like it's not even preparing for Moses or Ike.
- 41:07SPEAKER_09: It's oh, let's prepare for Lake Stevens.
- 41:09SPEAKER_09: I feel like them not being up there doesn't really define anything because I feel like any team in Seattle is good.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: Like for them to not be up there is kind of shocking, but at the same time is Well, and also, you know, the challenge of you gotta be on a bus trip and you gotta sit there for three hours plus and and then get off the bus and be able to play.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: So it's is that more mental than it is physical?
- 41:29SPEAKER_09: I think it is more mental because I feel like it's always like, oh, like the teams over there in Seattle are so good, they have all these D1 commits, but I feel like mentally we just have to know that I mean we can be any team if we really want to.
- 41:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 41:42SPEAKER_09: So I think physically we can I feel like the effort's always there for our team.
- 41:46SPEAKER_09: It's just mentally we have to be like, okay, like, do we really want to win?
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: Well, good luck.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: Travel well.
- 41:53SPEAKER_09: Thank you.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: And uh we'll see you down the road.
- 41:55SPEAKER_09: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: All right, there you go.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: Sophia Garcia joining us here on the What Ant You Panther Podcast.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: We're gonna talk to uh her coach.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: What do you think your coach is gonna say about you?
- 42:04SPEAKER_09: About me.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:05SPEAKER_09: I hope good things.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: Okay, well, I'm sure she will.
- 42:08SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 42:09SPEAKER_09: I think it will be a good thing.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: Slip her a$10 bill on your way out.

- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Well, Natchupanth Podcast on our final segment this week is uh a talk more soccer.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: We've got Ashton Kirkpatrick, who's the head coach of the girls' soccer team, on a roll right now.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: Haven't given up a goal in what, three weeks, two weeks, something like that.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: I I don't want to jinx anything, but uh starting out strong.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Congrats on the season so far.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: I saw the RPI come out, bumped up to number three this week.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: Oh, nice.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: Does that mean anything?
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, it does as far as your seeding for tournament, but do you pay attention during the season?
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's f it's a fun.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, any little moment of shine is fun, but uh Um the biggest thing for us is that seeding at the end of the season.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: So keeping that strong um might get us a chance at a home game.
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: That's kind of what we bank on that for.
- 44:09SPEAKER_03: So which is huge.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: We talked about that earlier.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Yes, that type of thing.
- 44:16SPEAKER_03: Talk about this season so far and and you had what one tie and the rest are wins and you got to be pretty happy about that.
- 44:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so far so good.
- 44:24SPEAKER_05: Um we still have we kind of started out our league play with uh kind of historically some of the lower end teams, and we've still got a couple of historically the upper end teams this week.
- 44:36SPEAKER_05: So um kind of a more true test, I think, this week with Moses Lake and Ike.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: Um Ike's got a pretty good squad this year, so they're kind of them and us right now are both undefeated in league play, and so that'll be a good battle.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: As you prepare for, you know, two ma two matches or two games this week, you know, as we record this, you're on your weather Moses Lake and then you got Eisenhower, um, Lake Stevens next week, that type of thing.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: How much is it at this point of the season with being you know five, six games in, are you working on you or are you working on scout the other team and hey, this is what we need to be prepared for?
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this season we've had a couple kind of our first season with some external wrenches thrown at us, little tweaks here and there, injuries, couple kids, um, you know, family emergencies gone, other sports interference.
- 45:28SPEAKER_05: So every week, truthfully, has felt like a little bit of a rebrand.
- 45:33SPEAKER_05: It's kind of like, okay, what formation are we gonna play this week based on who we have?
- 45:36SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: So at this point in the season, historically, we're we're pretty locked in with what we've got.
- 45:42SPEAKER_05: Um, but I mean, even next week we're down, you know, down a starter just for a different, different sporting event.
- 45:48SPEAKER_05: So it every it's a little bit different dynamic than I've had in the past where I'm constantly moving parts.
- 45:54SPEAKER_05: I'd like to be at a point where that is, you know, not a factor at this point.
- 45:59SPEAKER_05: Um and then we work toward what is the other team, you know, gonna throw at us.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: And so we're doing that simultaneously right now, um, which is fine, but it's new, new for us.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: Can that be an advantage as you get later on though, to to have those moving parts and and people that have played maybe more of a role than you necessarily thought they would in case of injury or in case of those things down the stretch?
- 46:22SPEAKER_05: Aaron Powell For sure.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: I think I mean with soccer in in such a short season with a very small buildup to the season formation and the flow of like, you know, me between you, the players on the field, has to be kind of dialed in as soon as you can because I think it's more of a rhythm than it is anything else.
- 46:42SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 46:42SPEAKER_05: So that's the one thing.
- 46:43SPEAKER_05: But in the past, our team has been pretty diverse in who contributes on the field.
- 46:48SPEAKER_05: Um and so it's not been something we we I mean, it's been we are handling it so far.
- 46:53SPEAKER_05: It's just a little bit different dynamic, I think.
- 46:55SPEAKER_05: It's a little less set in stone, which does give certain kids other opportunities to have a moment, um, but it also requires them to step up in that moment.
- 47:03SPEAKER_05: So kind of asking a little bit more of others.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: Aaron Powell We had Logan in, she was uh I think the first Panther athlete of the week, uh five goals in one game, I think it was.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: Uh what do you call that, by the way?
- 47:17SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, it's it's a hat trick for three, right?
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 47:27SPEAKER_03: All right, go for that.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: Um I assume you know, and and for those that don't know, Logan is involved in skiing, like heavily involved in skiing on the U.S.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: ski team for goodness sakes.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: So I'm sure that that's probably one of those scheduling things that you have to go, well, when we got her, we got her, when we don't, we don't.
- 47:44SPEAKER_05: Yes, that's part of it.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: Umstudier, by the way.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: Yes, and she's obviously a big role player on on our team, but uh kind of tied into what you said earlier, because she is such a role player, it's a pretty obvious stat to pick up as an opposing team.
- 47:58SPEAKER_05: And it's a pretty simple person to just stick somebody on, and so it does kind of cause the other teams to play us more straight up when when she's not around, um which you know, maybe is a good thing.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: So yeah, it's we'll see.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: So I mean, with with the shutouts in a row and all of that, uh you've had everything from 8-0 to 1-0 against eSpot.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: So as a coach, which which do you prefer win?
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: Number one.
- 48:24SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: But is there a preference?
- 48:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, getting shutouts, you gotta love your defense then, right?
- 48:29SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 48:30SPEAKER_05: I think truthfully, we've played some of the games that have higher score differentials are some of our worst games.
- 48:36SPEAKER_05: And so as a coaching staff, there was game like our tie, I think it's our m most well played game so far this season.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: So that one actually you go home and you walk away and it's like, dang, that we just competed with a pretty good team.
- 48:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 48:48SPEAKER_05: Um and so, and then you you beat a team 8-0 and it's sloppy and ugly and messy, and it's like, oh, it's hard to even celebrate that.
- 48:55SPEAKER_05: Like, yes, we did what was the same.
- 48:56SPEAKER_05: We always have coaching moments out of whatever.
- 48:58SPEAKER_05: It was kind of like, oh man, that was not a fun one.
- 49:01SPEAKER_05: So it's it is weird.
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: I think even like fans or parents, they see me and I wal you know, walk away from the field and it's like you know, eight-zero, but I'm like, oh, bummer.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: But it it it obviously was a good win, but you know, it should look different sometimes.
- 49:17SPEAKER_03: About how do you, you know, you gotta have the stick, but you have to be supportive.
- 49:22SPEAKER_06: You know, that type of thing.
- 49:23SPEAKER_03: So um out of that though, there's obviously you get together with practice.
- 49:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, is that something like coming back on the bus?
- 49:30SPEAKER_03: Are you are you doing this on the bus, or is it just, okay, when we get to practice tomorrow, this is are the things we have to work on?
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 49:36SPEAKER_05: A little bit of both.
- 49:37SPEAKER_05: I think I'm kind of a games are where um my emotion comes out too.
- 49:42SPEAKER_05: I I'm a competitor.
- 49:43SPEAKER_05: I and I mean I'm doing this for a reason.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: I I like to win and I like to win well, and I like things to be done a certain way.
- 49:49SPEAKER_05: So there is a high expectation, but there is a reality that you just beat a teammate to zero.
- 49:54SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's you can only do so much.
- 49:56SPEAKER_05: But I mean, truthfully, I think our team is a team that you don't have to do a lot of that.
- 50:02SPEAKER_05: Um they want to play well, they want to impress, they w they they're high achieving kids, and so they it doesn't take a lot of that for this group.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: Um so it's more of a reality, like, hey guys, and you know, everyone's like, Yeah, no, that was not what we should be doing.
- 50:15SPEAKER_05: So then you turn around at practice the next day and it's just it's more just having a conversation with them.
- 50:20SPEAKER_05: You don't really have to, you know, ride them super hard it after the fact.
- 50:25SPEAKER_05: In the moment, sure, yeah.
- 50:26SPEAKER_05: You know, I think every referee in town could say I'm I'm doing that, but um I think they respond well and they know that it's just it's just in the moment and afterwards that we fix it, and so it's really not a high intensity thing.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: How important is it to have some of those elder statesmen on the team like Sophia that we just talked to?
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: Because it seems like they would also and just in talking with her and how experienced she is and what a longtime soccer person she is, that she would know, you know, that eight-nothing, yeah, okay, we didn't do so well.
- 50:55SPEAKER_03: She would kind of be a team leader on the field for you, wouldn't she?
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it it was even apparent.
- 51:00SPEAKER_05: Like you just have a feeling like when the warm-up is not clean, like it was from the warm-up, it was we were all like, uh-oh, you know, something's thank goodness you know, this is who we're facing today, otherwise things weren't clicking.
- 51:12SPEAKER_05: And so um Which can happen.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: I mean Yeah, it was an off day.
- 51:16SPEAKER_05: And and kids that, you know, are normally just like spot on if they if you know four or five of those aren't having a day, it shows up.
- 51:23SPEAKER_05: And so thankfully it's you know, it shows up on that that day.
- 51:27SPEAKER_05: But yeah, it it is helpful because they do it doesn't it's not like I have to convince them like hey, we just played poorly.
- 51:33SPEAKER_05: They knew, you know, they know so uh and on the flip side, they know you know when you face a good team and you play hard and you play well, like that's not something to be upset about.
- 51:42SPEAKER_05: That was you know a good draw.
- 51:43SPEAKER_05: So it goes both ways.
- 51:45SPEAKER_03: How fun is that to have somebody like Sophia on the team that has such a soccer family and it's such a rich heritage with them?
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: It's awesome.
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: I think that's a lot of the team though.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: A lot of parents have played and they're I mean, I am so tuned in during the game, I have no idea what's being said, but you know, my family and my my family is that that too is they're up there watching all of our games they travel two-away games, and they're like, man, these parents I think are more into it than we even are, just yelling and screaming.
- 52:12SPEAKER_05: And so that culture is awesome for me because everybody's bought in.
- 52:16SPEAKER_05: Everybody knows, you know, yeah, we want we all want to win.
- 52:19SPEAKER_03: So that's how you're have you had a parent that has given you a good tip on, you know, hey, um so and so or such and such.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: My uh I'm sure it's probably more about their daughter than than anything else.
- 52:29SPEAKER_05: Aaron Ross Powell Yeah, I set that line pretty early in my coaching career to not cross that boundary.
- 52:34SPEAKER_05: That was day one, yes, handbook item number one.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: So love them.
- 52:39SPEAKER_05: But there's there's goggles, there's blinders with every pair.
- 52:42SPEAKER_05: And I'm sure in my future that'll be the same way.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: So it's you you can't be unbiased toward that.
- 52:47SPEAKER_03: Aaron Powell What are the challenges that you face now aside from just who's across the pitch from you, but also, you know, it's starting to get colder, it's starting to, you know, seasons changing, that type of thing.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:57SPEAKER_03: And and like you said, the injury issue, injuries versus hurt that you know, the difference there, right?
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think just staying healthy.
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: The second half of the season, staying healthy.
- 53:08SPEAKER_05: Um we took a smaller roster this year to begin with, um, just numbers-wise how the whole program panned out.
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: Um, but when you have players gone and you know, player beat up here and there, and and thankfully, you know, again, no season ending things have happened.
- 53:24SPEAKER_05: Um but you gotta keep people healthy.
- 53:26SPEAKER_05: It's a quick turnaround.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, three days between games, so um, that's the battle going ahead.
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: But you also still are prepping for that bigger, faster, stronger outside of our league, so you still have to train hard and condition in between.
- 53:39SPEAKER_05: So kind of picking moments for for highlighting that.
- 53:42SPEAKER_03: Um Are you coaching from the minute you get on the bus?
- 53:45SPEAKER_03: You guys are just about ready to get on the bus here at Winanchee High School.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: Are are are you that person, or are you just let them do their thing?
- 53:52SPEAKER_03: You know, uh we're gonna be there in ten minutes.
- 53:55SPEAKER_03: Okay, let's start getting your mind on it.
- 53:57SPEAKER_05: Usually me and the assistant coaches are in wigs and having lip sync competitions on on the bus, truthfully.
- 54:04SPEAKER_05: So no, the coaching starts you about an hour before.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: Yes, I think just having I mean, that's the fun t the fun time.
- 54:12SPEAKER_05: So, but once we're on the field and we're we have to hype them up in the locker room.
- 54:16SPEAKER_05: When we first started, it was I was used to you.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: You're in the locker room, you're blaring music.
- 54:21SPEAKER_05: It's like we're going.
- 54:23SPEAKER_05: And this group is a very introverted group and they're very quiet, and so I had to get used to that a little bit.
- 54:29SPEAKER_05: We're like ready to go.
- 54:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 54:31SPEAKER_05: And you know, we got Red Bull in each hand, and we're ready to rock, and they're like have headphones sitting quietly reading a book.
- 54:37SPEAKER_05: I was like, oh my gosh.
- 54:38SPEAKER_05: So different kind of things for different people.
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: Well, and and you have to, you know, kind of uh uh change your approach to how you were, maybe.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: You like you said, loud music and everything else.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: All the kids now have the earbuds and they're all just in their own little world.
- 54:52SPEAKER_05: No.
- 54:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:53SPEAKER_05: We made them they're out of their shell a little bit.
- 54:54SPEAKER_05: I think now that they know us, they're like, okay, these people are weird.
- 54:59SPEAKER_05: We got them a little more comfortable.
- 55:02SPEAKER_03: Um I I wanted to ask you too, uh, you know, uh BJ is is working on this this thing here at the high school and really kind of throughout the district on we are a Wenatchee and what it means to be a Panther and and all of that stuff.
- 55:15SPEAKER_03: For you, what does that mean?
- 55:18SPEAKER_05: I think I mean I I'm a proud Wenatchee alum, so it's easy for me, it's rooted in me.
- 55:23SPEAKER_05: I came back, you know, did my schooling, came back to town.
- 55:27SPEAKER_05: Um I've always loved loved Wenatchee, so and I always kind of imagine my future here, so it's just kind of part of me just growing up.
- 55:35SPEAKER_05: I mean, Ron Stone basketball camp.
- 55:38SPEAKER_05: Like this is just part of who I am.
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: I've been doing it since I was in the first grade, just coming, coming through these halls.
- 55:43SPEAKER_05: So um through the same halls, quite literally.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: But we'll have that discussion next week, gang.
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, so to me it's it's kind of just built in me, kind of weaved through me.
- 55:55SPEAKER_05: So the the Wenatchee pants actually I just moved to East Wenatchee and it's kind of just feels a little weird.
- 56:01SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 56:02SPEAKER_05: You don't feel good until you come across the bridge.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: I gotta wear this shirt more often or something.
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: So the O2 at the end of the zip code is throwing me off.
- 56:09SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: I got you.
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: I gotcha.
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: Well, uh best of luck with the rest of the move.
- 56:13SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: First of all, uh yeah, that's always a challenge, is where where did we put that box, honey?
- 56:19SPEAKER_03: Um and of course the rest of the season.
- 56:21SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 56:21SPEAKER_03: And the health, you know, obviously got to keep that going.
- 56:24SPEAKER_03: And and uh best of luck here in this next swing.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: I appreciate it.
- 56:28SPEAKER_03: Okay, Ashton Kirkpatrick joining us here on the What Ant You Panther Podcast, as we mentioned, uh or uh we should probably give it specifics here uh coming up Saturday, uh Eisenhower, uh right here at the Apple Bowl against your Panther girls soccer team.
- 56:41SPEAKER_03: That'll uh kick off at one o'clock um next week.
- 56:44SPEAKER_03: They're on the road at Lake Stevens, right?
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 56:48SPEAKER_03: And uh if you want the schedule, they've got it on the website too, so you can you can look for it there.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: Um we should also run down real quick.
- 56:55SPEAKER_03: Sorry to keep you here while I do this, but a little uh uh you know note-taking.
- 56:58SPEAKER_03: We've got the Winanche Girls Swim and Dive team uh as we drop the podcast here on this Thursday.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: They are in the pool this afternoon at home against uh at 4 o'clock.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: Also volleyball on the road at Ike tonight at 6 30.
- 57:11SPEAKER_03: And then tomorrow, swim and dive also home against versus Moses Lake.
- 57:15SPEAKER_03: That starts at noon.
- 57:17SPEAKER_03: And uh Panther Football on the road, our Weinstein Beverage Panther Game of the Week at Davis uh Zephyr Stadium for that one.
- 57:24SPEAKER_03: I'll have your pregame at 6 30 and the uh kickoff at 7 o'clock.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: Next week on the podcast, we'll have uh football defensive coordinator Jay Foster joining us.
- 57:32SPEAKER_03: Also one of his standout players, Cash Schratz.
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, we'll also be joined by Tucker Jackson and Julie Norton.
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: They're on the Winanchee School Board.
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: We'll talk about this aged school uh here and some of the needs they have with that bond coming up.
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: And also on the uh dive team, we're gonna talk with Emmy England.
- 57:50SPEAKER_03: So I've never talked to somebody who specializes in diving before.
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: So I'm looking forward to that.
- 57:55SPEAKER_03: So it's all coming up next week here on the Winatchie Panther Podcast.
- 57:58SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much for joining us.
- 57:59SPEAKER_03: And you talked about coming back to Winatchie and being a Winanchee person and being Winanche grad.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: Uh Trey Gooch, thank you for jumping on as a sponsor with the podcast.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: Uh he said that, you know, I'm a Winanche grad, and by gosh, uh roots are right here.
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: So he heard about the podcast and wanted to be uh come a sponsor along with Les Schwab.
- 58:17SPEAKER_03: So thank you so much to TGR Inc.
- 58:19SPEAKER_03: for being that.
- 58:19SPEAKER_03: We'll see you again next week on the Winanche Panther Podcast.
