Transcript
- 0:00The new mayor of Reelville. It's the Morning Show with Preston Scott. Thirty
- 0:14five minutes past the hour. It's The Morning Show with Preston Scott and Preston
- 0:18Show number five and forty. That's Grant Allen over there, and we are
- 0:24joined today to take a look at the trial of Charlie Edelson, Day five
- 0:30by Carl Steinbeck, private practicing attorney. He's been a prosecutor, state public
- 0:35defender, military defense counsel, but most importantly he's been our guest. Hello
- 0:41Carl, Good morning, Preston. What surprised you yesterday in day five?
- 0:47If anything, well, I think everything went really well. What probably surprised
- 0:54me the most, which really defeats this whole extortion thing, probably as good
- 0:57as anything, is a fact that Charlie we heard him on these wire taps
- 1:03saying that he has a birthday gift for someone, and it was pretty obviously
- 1:07he was talking about Sigfredo and a correspondent like around two days of his birthday
- 1:15and the night surprise inside of it probably could have been the five thousand dollars
- 1:19that was demanded by the undercover agent. Don't know that for sure, but
- 1:23it just totally shows that there was not any extortion attempt by any of the
- 1:29hitman through Katie against him. So the government just has an absolute, rock
- 1:34solid case. I mean, the defense is even admitted that he's paid for
- 1:40the hit, although he's saying it was after fact and extortion. I mean,
- 1:44you're that close to it already. So all the jury has to do
- 1:47is look at everything he's said, all those hours and hours of wire taps,
- 1:51and easily conclude that this is not any kind of extortion or blackmail attempt
- 1:55and that he is in fact guilty. Charlie Aedelson is the I'm her brother
- 2:00in law of Dan Markel, who was murdered nine and a half years ago,
- 2:04just about five minutes from our studio. Carl And for those that may
- 2:08have missed some of the opening segments we've done, the defense has been claiming
- 2:15that Charlie and Donna, but focused on Charlie, has been a victim of
- 2:20extortion. I feel like Georgia Kappelman and maybe she was prepared for that defense,
- 2:25maybe she wasn't. All I know is it seems as though she has
- 2:30been systematically absolutely crushing that narrative and it's allowed her to introduce all these opportunities
- 2:38that Adelson's had to report it to law enforcement and contrast it with what they
- 2:44in fact have done, so that if the defense goes there moving ahead,
- 2:49will she will have the opportunity to reinforce the notion that that's garbage a second
- 2:54time on jurors, won't she? Oh? Absolutely? I mean it is
- 3:00total farcical. It's total total garbage. Comes across as totally fictionalized because they
- 3:06have nothing to work with. It's really present, sort of like a DNA
- 3:08case. It's like trying to argue against DNA. The best way to prove
- 3:13something if it's not DNA is through the defendant's own words usually, and here
- 3:16we got hours and hours at him talking like a criminal undercover to his mom,
- 3:22talking in code to his Katie as well. So why would you talk
- 3:27in code if you were bumped and you're innocent. People only do that when
- 3:31they're actually the criminals and they're suspicious of law enforcement having eavesdropping on them.
- 3:38So it's so abundantly clear anybody can easily cease through this. And I think
- 3:43the jury's only going to be out, you know, probably less than an
- 3:46hour, ninety minutes and come back with a guilty verdict on all charges.
- 3:49Yeah, to just kind of finish up that point. You don't have kind
- 3:53of almost at times playful exchanges with Katie meg banwa if she's extorting from you,
- 4:00and that's what I heard, I love you. There's flirtatious and this
- 4:04going on in their conversations. She's talking about, hey, maybe you can
- 4:08adopt my kids. And anyway, it was so abundantly clear that there is
- 4:14zero extortion, there's no behavior that's consistent without any of the parties. It's
- 4:17his job to keep you informed. The Morning Show with Preston Scott on News
- 4:23Radio one hundred point seven WFLA attorney Carl Steinbeck with us a few more minutes
- 4:31this morning as we talked through day five yesterday, the happenings in the trial
- 4:38of Charlie Adelson. I was a little surprised. I know that you make
- 4:42appearances, Carl on Court TV. I was surprised. Yesterday Judge Ashley Wilcott,
- 4:47hosting afternoon segments, kept saying, the state's not there yet with regard
- 4:54to all this testimony, and I'm trying to figure out where in the world
- 4:58she's seeing a hole in the case. Yeah, I'm not. I'm not
- 5:02tracking that at all. I don't I don't know who that person is.
- 5:05But they must not be following the case in enough detail because the evidence is
- 5:12overwhelming and uh, it's it's abundantly clear. And from what I'm hearing of
- 5:16folks in the uh in the room there as spectators, the jurors are getting
- 5:21it too, and just also seeing some of the stuff that Charlie has said
- 5:25on those wire taps, the way he's disparaged women that are single with kids
- 5:31and saying that nobody would want to date on their not dating material and whatnot.
- 5:35There was even some responses by some of the single mothers on the jury.
- 5:41I know I was told. So it's it's not going good for Charlie,
- 5:46and I think the evidence is going to bear out with the guilty verdict
- 5:49as soon as today perhaps, so no doubts in my mind that's what the
- 5:55outcome will be. At times, speaking of Charlie, you know, the
- 5:59camera is on him almost all the time in the coverage of this. It's
- 6:03a split screen. There are times it's as if he's displaying what i'll call
- 6:08misplaced confidence, almost enjoying this kind of smiling, and I think he's his
- 6:13worst enemy. Yet there are other times that he looks overwhelmed by what's mounting
- 6:19up against him. Carl have you ever had a client get to a point
- 6:24and a trial where they lean over and say, we need to cut a
- 6:27deal. No, I've never had that. But it's not too late.
- 6:31You know, if a client realizes that they're about to face impending doom,
- 6:38the state would cut him a deal. I think, get them something in
- 6:40the range of twenty five to thirty or something like that. But I don't
- 6:46see from my experience somebody like Charlie who thinks he can talk his way out
- 6:50of everything. I mean, he's been able to basically get out of everything
- 6:54his whole life through money and connections. I think he's thinking that he can,
- 7:00you know, pulling over on the jurors and they're going to have They're
- 7:03going to buy into this outlandis theory, and it doesn't matter what the truth
- 7:08is. All that matters is that he's talking and he wants you to do
- 7:12what he says and think about it. He's groomed Katie from October of twenty
- 7:16thirteen, and within two weeks or so, he's asking her, do you
- 7:20know anybody that could put the hurt on somebody? And then he has this
- 7:26relationship with her, and then as soon as the murder happened within that same
- 7:30month of July, they stopped dating. So is that a coincidence the timing
- 7:33of how he came to adoptor as a girlfriends It looked like it was grooming,
- 7:39just like it would look like jeff Licos was groomed as well by Wendy.
- 7:43Let me ask you this, as a public defender, have you ever
- 7:46been in a situation where as the case is unfolding, Let's say you're Charlie's
- 7:51advisor at this point, you're his attorney. At some point, are you
- 7:56leaning over to him when the day is done and say saying, Charlie,
- 8:01this case is going the wrong way for you, buddy, Well, I
- 8:05think a good defense attorney is going to talk about that way in advance,
- 8:09and offense attorney will be able to predict this kind of outcome. So I
- 8:13think there should not be any surprises from a good attorney that knows how to
- 8:16size up evidence and then has that candid, blunt a conversation with their client
- 8:22to get them to see the light. But I think a guy like Charlie,
- 8:24he just doesn't want to go there, and so I don't know how
- 8:28much his attorney would have told him. It's like, do you realize how
- 8:31much you got against you here? So yeah, it all depends on individual
- 8:35attorneys, you know. I think it's who's an attorney to at least say,
- 8:39you know, do you want to plead guilty? But there's how much
- 8:43the attorney goes into laying the case against him in sort of like a mock
- 8:46scenario. Well, here's what the procecutor is going to say, and here's
- 8:50how they're going to nail you on this, and here's how jury's going to
- 8:52interpret what you did for this, that and the other. So it's really
- 8:54it's really comes down to style of the attorney. Okay, let me ask
- 8:58you this. This is going to be the last question of the day and
- 9:01maybe the most delicate one. You're in private practice, but you also served
- 9:05as a public defender. Is is it more likely that a private practicing attorney
- 9:11says, hey, we're just going to carry this through because let's face it,
- 9:13he's being paid. A public defender might be more likely to say,
- 9:18honestly, you're in trouble. That's a very insightful statement there at pressing,
- 9:24because I think that's exactly how it works out in the real life. He
- 9:28stopped to go back and think of who first flipped. It was Lewis Rivera,
- 9:35who had a court appointed attorney who was on like a flat rate fee,
- 9:39right, So there was no there's no financial incentive to keep the thing
- 9:43going. So I'm not saying that happen in this particular case. I don't
- 9:46think it really matters because a guy like Charlie you cannot handle and get him
- 9:50to see the light and want to roll over on others, especially when it's
- 9:54Stanley membership. I think that'll change Preston once he gets convicted and maybe after
- 10:00his parents pass on, assuming that happens and Wendy's still alive, and I
- 10:03think he'd be willing to roll over on Wendy because they're not even talking.
- 10:07She wouldn't even look at him in the courtroom. It's going to be a
- 10:09fascinating way this plays out. I suspect we'll talk again tomorrow. Thank you,
- 10:13carl Yes, sir, thank you. Forty seven minutes after the hour
