- 1:10which by all accounts, is an absolute Whopper.
- 1:15So Holy Spirit, open our hearts to receive the gift of Jesus.
- 1:19As we read this story, you ready, friends?
- 1:23Let's do it. Let's read together.
- 1:25Luke Chapter 2. At that time, the Roman Emperor,
- 1:40Augustus decree that a census should be taken throughout the
- 1:44Roman Empire. This was the first census taken.
- 1:47When quirinius was governor of Syria, all returned to their own
- 1:52ancestral, homes to register for the census.
- 1:55And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had
- 1:58to go to Bethlehem in Judea David's ancient home.
- 2:02He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.
- 2:06He took with him, Mary to who Whom he was engaged, who is now
- 2:10expecting a child? And while they were there, the
- 2:14time came for her baby to be born.
- 2:17She gave birth to her firstborn son, she wrapped him snugly, in
- 2:22strips of cloth, and laid him in a Manger, because there was no
- 2:26lodging available. To them, that night, there were
- 2:30shepherds staying in the fields, nearby guarding their flocks of
- 2:32sheep, suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared among them and the
- 2:38Of the Lord's, Glory surround them, they were terrified, but
- 2:42the angel reassured them. Don't be afraid.
- 2:45He said, I bring you good news, that will bring great, joy to
- 2:50all people the Savior. Yes, the Messiah.
- 2:54The Lord has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David and
- 3:00you will recognize him by this sign.
- 3:03You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth lying.
- 3:08In a Manger suddenly the angel was joined by a vast host of
- 3:13others. The armies of Heaven, praising
- 3:16God and saying glory to God in highest heaven and peace on
- 3:22Earth to those with whom God is pleased when the Angels had
- 3:28returned to heaven, the shepherd's said to each other.
- 3:31Let's go to Bethlehem, let's see.
- 3:33This thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about
- 3:37they hurried to the Each and found Mary and Joseph.
- 3:41And there was the baby lying in the manger.
- 3:44After seeing him the shepherd's told everyone.
- 3:48What had happened? And what the angel had said to
- 3:50them about this child, all her heard, the shepherd's story were
- 3:54astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and
- 3:59thought about them often. The shepherd's went back to
- 4:02their flocks glorifying and praising God.
- 4:06For all they had heard and seen and it was just as the angel had
- 4:10told them. Eight days later when the baby
- 4:14was circumcised, he was named Jesus.
- 4:17The name given him by the angel before he was conceived.
- 4:21Then it was time for the purification offering as
- 4:24required by the law of Moses after the birth of a child.
- 4:29So his parents took him to Jerusalem to present him to the
- 4:32Lord. The law of the Lord says if a
- 4:36woman's first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord so
- 4:41they offered us. A sacrifice required in the law
- 4:43of the Lord. Either a pair of turtledoves or
- 4:46two young pigeons At that time. There was a man in Jerusalem
- 4:51named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and
- 4:55was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue
- 4:58Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and
- 5:02had revealed to him that he would not die, until he had seen
- 5:06the Lord's Messiah that day, the spirit, led him to the temple.
- 5:11So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the
- 5:15Lord, as a law required Simeon, was there he took?
- 5:19The child in his arms and praised God saying Sovereign.
- 5:24Lord, now let your servant die in peace.
- 5:28As you have promised I have seen your salvation, which you have
- 5:32prepared, for all people. He is the light to reveal God,
- 5:37to the nation's, and he is the glory of your People, Israel.
- 5:43Jesus parents were amazed at what he was saying about him,
- 5:46then Simeon blessed them, and he Said to marry the baby's mother.
- 5:51This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall and many
- 5:56others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from
- 6:00God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest
- 6:05thoughts of many hearts will be revealed and a sword will pierce
- 6:09your very soul. Anna, a prophet was also there
- 6:14in the temple. She was the daughter of phanuel
- 6:17from the tribe of Asher and she was very old, her husband died.
- 6:22When they had been married, only seven years.
- 6:25Then she lived as a widow to the age of 84, she never left the
- 6:30temple but stayed there day and night worshiping god with
- 6:35fasting and prayer. She came along just as Simeon
- 6:38was talking with Mary and Joseph and she began praying Praising
- 6:42God. She talked about the trial to
- 6:44everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue
- 6:47Jerusalem when Jesus parents had fulfilled.
- 6:50All the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home
- 6:54to Nazareth in Galilee there. The child grew up healthy and
- 6:59strong. He was filled with wisdom and
- 7:02God's favor was on him. Every year, Jesus parents went
- 7:07to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival.
- 7:10When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as
- 7:13usual. After the celebration was over.
- 7:17They started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in
- 7:20Jerusalem, his parents didn't miss him at first because they
- 7:24assumed, he was among the other Travelers, but when he didn't
- 7:28show up that evening, they started looking for him among
- 7:30their relatives and friends, when they couldn't find him,
- 7:34they went back to Jerusalem. I'm to search for him there.
- 7:37Three days later, they finally discovered him in the temple,
- 7:41sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and
- 7:44asking questions, all who heard him were amazed at his
- 7:48understanding and his answers, his parents didn't know what to
- 7:52think. Son his mother said to him.
- 7:56Why have you done this to us? Your father, and I have been
- 7:59frantic searching for you everywhere.
- 8:03But why did you need to search? He asked, didn't you know that I
- 8:07must be in my father's house, but they didn't understand what
- 8:11he meant. Then he returned to Nazareth
- 8:14with them and was obedient to them.
- 8:17And his mother stored, all these things in her heart.
- 8:21Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God
- 8:26and all the people. Jesus, you certainly are just as
- 8:40that Prophet. Simeon said you are a light to
- 8:43reveal. God, to the nation's.
- 8:47Thank you. Jesus, that through you.
- 8:50We get to know what your father is like.
- 8:54As we read through this gospel, we are going to hear your words
- 8:57of kindness and forgiveness and your radical teaching which will
- 9:01turn the worldly, wisdom on its head.
- 9:05Thank you for your word. Thank you for you.
- 9:09The truth that lives in our hearts, in your spirit.
- 9:15We are so grateful for you and everything you've done for us
- 9:19and we are so grateful that we can read about your life in
- 9:22these gospels. Thank you for the chance to read
- 9:24this together. We pray that as we read through
- 9:28these chapters and these words that you would stir in us and
- 9:33you would awake us to the truth that you want.
- 9:36Each of us to here, to inspire us to live in a way that would
- 9:41bring glory to you and bring your kingdom to be a Reality.
- 9:45Now we just lift you up and praise you and it's in your name
- 9:50that we pray, Jesus. Amen.
- 9:45Reality. Now we just lift you up and
- 9:48praise you and it's in your name that we pray, Jesus.
- 9:52Amen.
