- 0:00SPEAKER_05: It's extremely important for me to lead the men and women that will be leading men and women.
- 0:05SPEAKER_05: It's such an honor to even be able to think about it.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Remote Podcast.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm Tony Reacher.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Today I have the honor of sitting down with Max Moore, who is a faith-driven leader here in Indianapolis, co-founder of Roots Realty, owner of Plainfield GNC.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: In this episode, we discuss switching from obsessing about cash flow to focusing on helping A players grow, lead from overflow, and maintain emotional margin.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the show, Max.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me on.
- 0:30unknown: Absolutely.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I'm excited.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I previously obviously interviewed your co-founder, Tyler Lingle.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to hear about what Roots has first been rooted in, but also how you've developed the business over time in a redemptive manner, glorifying the Lord through what you're building and especially doing so publicly with the events that you guys host, the podcast, et cetera, and what it looks like today versus um, you know, when you first started.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I've I've heard uh Tyler's side of things.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I'd I'd love to hear your side of what Roots looks like today and how it's developed over time.
- 1:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_05: Roots has changed quite a bit.
- 1:16SPEAKER_05: We started in 2023, and I would say the first rendition was about how much accomplishment there can be leading into a cash flow metric.
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: So how much money can we earn more exploitive than redemptive?
- 1:29SPEAKER_05: I don't think that that was anything uh with malintent that we were going out of like, let's be it's just the industry, right?
- 1:36SPEAKER_05: It's real estate.
- 1:37SPEAKER_05: Um, and I love that you're asking about the transformation because there has been a pretty profound transformation led through our own spiritual journeys independently between Tyler and I, as well as everybody in our room, where it became super clear for me was we had an agent, and I'll speak on his behalf because I know that he'll be okay with it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, Trent Keester jumped on in like early 2024.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: Um, he was a client of Tyler's, and he me and him like met after they closed on the house.
- 2:10SPEAKER_05: He invited Tyler to back nine to meet his real estate mentors just to network.
- 2:14SPEAKER_05: So I was like, okay, I'm gonna meet up with these guys who should come hang out.
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: Um, so I meet Trent.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: This is in September of 23, and you know, we're just he just bought a house.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: He's excited.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: We're talking about real estate.
- 2:25SPEAKER_05: He calls me at some point in the next couple of months and he's like, I found this house, I want to wholesale it, and was like so gun-ho and excited.
- 2:32SPEAKER_05: And I think my response back to him was don't mess around with that, you're gonna get burnt.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: Like you're just gonna get hurt.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: You should uh enroll and get your real estate license because he was speaking so confidently on the phone.
- 2:42SPEAKER_05: Like, you could sell.
- 2:44SPEAKER_05: If you could sell, like stop being a bar back, like come join.
- 2:47SPEAKER_05: So he jumps on the team, fast forward.
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then early this year, he gets baptized and is completely walking with the Lord in his life, or maybe late last year, some at some point in the last few months he got baptized and has completely um changed the script and how he communicates.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: And seeing that, I'm like, oh wow, we can depopulate hell simply by having agents in our room.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: So then where else can we do that?
- 3:16SPEAKER_05: Like, what happens if we prayed at our events?
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: Like people are invited in for to talk about cash flow and flipping properties, right?
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: But what if we prayed?
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: And maybe that's one time a year that somebody's prayed for or prayed with.
- 3:30SPEAKER_05: And that can become a sanctuary that doesn't have to be this, like, oh, you have to be a Christian to be in this room.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: No, I mean, we want everybody in the room, right?
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: We just want God to be present when we are all networking and connecting because at the end of the day, that's why that's that's why we're able to even connect to begin with.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: Um, so I've just been like on the swing up with that journey of of redemption uh in my own spiritual um walk, like getting my license.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: I was not the was a Christian uh and wanted to actually be a pastor, but I didn't was still in this infant stage.
- 4:07SPEAKER_05: I shouldn't know it at that time, right?
- 4:10SPEAKER_05: I was like doing the habits and doing the things, but I was still infantile in my faith.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: What does faith-driven leadership look like to you and how how does that manifest itself within your personal life, but also with your team, with your events, with your partners, your vendors, um, such as Reborn Homes.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Um what's your perspective on what should faith-driven leadership look like?
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: My goal is to help A players, people who are extremely hungry, scale their lives and business sustainably.
- 4:53SPEAKER_05: So I don't want to see anybody take like an exponential leap from zero to hero.
- 4:57SPEAKER_05: I want people to uh transform over time.
- 5:00SPEAKER_05: And as a leader, leader that is faith-driven, I feel called to speak to the Lord and pray on my people and ask him, hey, what's the timing that they need to like hear this?
- 5:12SPEAKER_05: Or how can I be or how should I be mentoring?
- 5:16SPEAKER_05: Um, and there's a lot of thoughtful communication around that.
- 5:19SPEAKER_05: And then it's making like bold out of this world statements.
- 5:24SPEAKER_05: Um, like AJ, the we're in the same studio that we record our podcast.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, I have said things to AJ that I'm like, I think you could scale this business to do this or this or this.
- 5:32SPEAKER_05: And like, that's not brought from Max, right?
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: That's like some sort of moment uh being like I'm more of a pioneer in in the way that I operate.
- 5:42SPEAKER_05: So I'm thinking seven steps ahead about everybody's business and where they can go and what land they can find to scale.
- 5:50SPEAKER_05: Um, and that's what I've been blessed with is to be able to like see where things are not as efficient, find the place that we can get to to fill the efficiencies to get better.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: What do you believe qualifies you or anybody as a leader, especially at such a young age, leading a team of I I think some of your team is older than you as well.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I would say our average age, if we put everybody into a calculator, uh be somewhere around the like 29-ish, uh, maybe 30.
- 6:23SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 6:24SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, I love leading people that are older than me more than people that are younger than me, I've found.
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, I actually hate, I'm sorry to everybody who's younger than me on my team.
- 6:35SPEAKER_05: It's not as it's it's harder.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: It's more of a challenge because I've made the stupid mistakes that they're about to make, like just made them, right?
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: As we're the people, if we're going just based on age or stage of life, I like to talk about stage of life more.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: If somebody's in like five stages of life ahead of me, well, they've already been through all the crap that I haven't even like thought that I'm gonna go through yet.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: So when I'm giving them advice, it's like a youthfulness, right?
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: Like, oh yeah, I remember whenever I was in that stage of life, and like I I love the optimism that he has, and and they can be impacted greater than that.
- 7:12SPEAKER_05: Because we're somebody who like uh internally is in their early 20s, like starting out in real estate, it's like uh they're partying on the weekends and doing the different things.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: I've been there, I've done that, and like I just want to tell them it's a waste of time and stop.
- 7:27SPEAKER_05: Like, but um it's harder to do that, it's harder to be that.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: Like, no, don't do that.
- 7:34SPEAKER_05: Don't go out and have fun.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: Like, I think everybody should have fun.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, just for me it was a waste of time when I reflect.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And your team is how big right now?
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: We have my team for real estate is a total of 12 strong.
- 7:53SPEAKER_05: Um, I guess technically 14.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: As of last week, we signed a a JV for a property management company, so we assume two more people in um my organization as a whole is around the 20 mark, so just through all the different businesses.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Where do you get your wisdom, your energy, your power, and the love?
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: It takes a lot of love to serve 20 people on your on your teams.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Where does that all come from?
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: I keep a pretty tight knit uh board of advisors that changes over time.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: I try to be somewhere in like the five to seven people range.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: Like if I'm less than five mentors, I need to go network more.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: And those change over time.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: You know, you don't keep the same board of advisors all the way through except for mom and dad, um, or at least God willing, uh keep keep mom and dad.
- 8:51SPEAKER_05: Um, and I kind of lump them together.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: It's like half they sit in the same chair together.
- 8:56SPEAKER_05: And then we've I've got a mentor that a couple in real estate that are leading teams bigger than mine, uh older than mine, and made the mistakes that I'm going to make already so that I can cut some years off of growth.
- 9:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then some pretty deep spiritual mentors that uh have just recently started in my life.
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: Like that wasn't on my board of advisors, a direct spiritual mentor.
- 9:21SPEAKER_05: Everybody is faith-based that I go to for advice.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: Um, but I did not have like a direct spiritual mentor.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: And then the last is wisdom-wise, uh, besides scripture and just thoughtful prayer and reading books, is having a coach.
- 9:36SPEAKER_05: I I don't care what that guy charges me.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: I hope that this gets posted and he watches it, watches it.
- 9:42SPEAKER_05: Shout out Josh.
- 9:43SPEAKER_05: I would pay him whatever.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: He could, he could, yeah, he could charge me way more money than he does.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: Um because he's been everything transformational.
- 9:53SPEAKER_05: And just having a dedicated two-hour block to just talk through what are the problems happening in your businesses right now, right?
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: Because there's more than just Roots Reality Co.
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: There's different franchises and stuff like um to just have a thought partner that Josh gets a lot of his wisdom also from coaching other business leaders, right?
- 10:17SPEAKER_05: Um and he can bring in he's quick witted to bringing these different models in that help my brain.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: Like, oh yeah, I'm an idiot for even not thinking like this before.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: What's the number one framework you've learned from your coach?
- 10:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 10:35SPEAKER_05: Uh there's a this worksheet, it's called the scaling up worksheet.
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: It's a Jim Collins um resource.
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: And essentially what it has is a BHAG in the middle.
- 10:44SPEAKER_05: You write out your uh core values, your mission, and your brand promises.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: And then right under it, it's got a quarter, one to two year, two to three, or three to five year progression of like your rocks that you're gonna be moving.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: So, like in this next quarter, I have to do X so that in a year we can get to Y, so that in three years we're at Z to hit our seven year B Hag.
- 11:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like these things have to happen.
- 11:09SPEAKER_05: Um man, that like it it's above my desk at all times.
- 11:18SPEAKER_05: Blank to-do list, I look up and I'm like, oh, okay, yeah, no, I have shit to do.
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: I've got it right now, it's the the two main bhags that we have.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: Uh number one is client-facing, which is a thousand first-time home buyers or investors.
- 11:33SPEAKER_05: So investor buyer house for the first time by 2032, help a thousand, um, which is a huge number.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: What are you at now?
- 11:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, we are sitting at 101.
- 11:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: So 10% there.
- 11:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:47SPEAKER_05: And the 2032 number is to give runway.
- 11:51SPEAKER_05: It was helped 10,000 people buy or sell, buy or invest for the first time.
- 11:57SPEAKER_05: Um, broadly, like just help them.
- 12:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 12:00SPEAKER_05: It's like, wait, how do you track helping somebody?
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: Because somebody could come to our events and use a different agent.
- 12:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 12:05SPEAKER_05: There's plenty of people who have and then buy their first home.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: Um, nobody's required to use us, right?
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: But actually convert and then be our clients, bringing that down to a thousand.
- 12:15SPEAKER_05: The hope is that 10,000 will be affected through that journey.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: 10,000 affected, 1,000 closed.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Got it, got it.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: And then you said there was a second BHAG.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for so I own a franchise GNC, and by 2028, I want to sell or sign up 250 pro members.
- 12:37SPEAKER_05: Which like what does that mean?
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 12:39SPEAKER_05: Business development wise, GNC has become one of my uh it was my least favorite.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: And when you don't like something, if you look in the mirror, uh, sometimes you can start to like it.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: GNC has become my favorite venture.
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: Again, it's been reborn.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: Um I I have I just hired a bookkeeper.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: If you don't have a bookkeeper and you're building a business, just get one from day one.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: I don't care again what they cost.
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: Like go pressure wash a house and make some money so you can pay your bookkeeper because my goodness, she has been a lifesaver.
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: Um, and she's been gone back through everything.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: And I knew these numbers, like I had them tracked, I just didn't have them in the pretty QuickBooks PDF.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: GNC, I've owned it since 2022.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: It has not turned a profit on any single year thus far.
- 13:22SPEAKER_05: In fact, last year I lost$100,000 owning it.
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: I funded a hundred grand to own the store.
- 13:29SPEAKER_05: And like the whole idea of getting into real estate was turning commission checks into investment properties, not fund a GNC store, right?
- 13:36SPEAKER_05: So I'm I sat at the end of last year.
- 13:40SPEAKER_05: I'm like, this won't happen again.
- 13:41SPEAKER_05: I won't take this money away from my family.
- 13:44SPEAKER_05: Um, and just a lot of prayer.
- 13:46SPEAKER_05: Like, Lord, what what was a store given to me for?
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: How am I supposed to steward this?
- 13:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's yours.
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: You you trusted me.
- 13:54SPEAKER_05: What am I supposed to be doing and what am I not doing?
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: And I met uh the the new operator there, uh, hired him in right after Thanksgiving.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: And I met him around the October phase time and just kept praying.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: Like, is Jason the guy you're putting in my life?
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: Is Jason the guy you're putting in my life?
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: And I can abundantly say, yes, Jason was the guy that that the Lord was putting in front of me and and uh serving him and allowing the Lord to work through me.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: Uh that he's got such a big heart and he is so good at sales and so excited to run a supplement store.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Um it it fires me up to see his energy that's been transformed.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: So he he starts uh December one and we sat down with a scaling up framework.
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: So I'm like, I've made Rude successful.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: There's no way the GNC cannot be successful.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: Like the only reason it hasn't been, in my opinion, is because I shut the Lord out from it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_05: I never talked about God with any of the employees.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: Um, I never I didn't go to church with any of them.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: I didn't invite any of them in.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: The like total of 23 that I've had there in the last since I started when I was 16.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: I've worked with 23 different people in the stores.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: And I wrote it all out because I was trying to audit this to be like, have I had any faith conversation with any of these people?
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: Uh and it was stirred up in me that the answer was no, sort of, kind of.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: We just hired a guy, roots, we pulled him from GNC, and yes, don't have to count him.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: Um, and so I wanted to walk into this year with the mission being way bigger than Max, right?
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, and how can we redeem through GNC?
- 15:35SPEAKER_05: And the way that we can actually help people is by getting them in at the store they walk in, the doorbell goes off, and asking them what is going on in their life, why are they at a supplement store?
- 15:46SPEAKER_05: You don't go to a supplement store just because you want to buy supplement, like you go to supplement stores because you have a problem that you need help uh solving.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: Unless if you're a recurring customer, then we're not gonna batter you.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: But like somebody may be having you know uh chronic problems with sleeping.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: It's like, what's going on in your life that you're having problems sleeping?
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: Like, is it actually neurological?
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: Do you need supplements for it, or is it just like you're going through a hard time right now?
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: And those conversations that I've heard stirred from there have been so good.
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: Um, and anyways, I wanted to to use the same frameworks that I brought into roots through coaching with Josh.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: And we sat down and a B HAG that we created was 250 pro members at GNC.
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: By 2028, pro member is like a club.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: So for me, it's like it's a conversion of uh we turned you from just a casual shopper into a raving fan.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: But kind of like the first time home buyer, we turned you into a a renter that doesn't build equity to actually building wealth.
- 16:44SPEAKER_05: So if I were to think of an equity deposit at GNC, you would be a pro member shopping there.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: You'd be making equitable contributions to your health.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: In the supplement business, is that more important to have recurring customers and have a bunch of new customers?
- 16:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:00SPEAKER_05: Uh in the past two years, we've served uh 1,200 1,271 customers at the store.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: Um, and we had signed 33 of them up for loyalty, not even pro, so it's a free version uh of all of 2025.
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: And 26 thus far, we've had 371 unique customers.
- 17:24SPEAKER_05: We've signed uh a total of 26 of them up for pro and over a hundred and some.
- 17:31SPEAKER_05: I I've like lost count for loyalty just by implementing systems and having conversations and you know, asking questions, right?
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: Um, and the idea is that five times spend if you're a loyalty per per year, you'll spend five times more than a non-loyalty customer.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: So you're getting the email drips, the text, the Instagram, all this stuff, mailers and and whatnot, and then 12 times if you're a pro member.
- 17:58SPEAKER_05: So if I was going to turn GNC to be profitable, right, I've got a large gap to come back to from my original investment and my continual investment, my auto draw of six grand a month or whatever, um, have to build that back up through okay, who spends most money?
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: Pros?
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: Awesome.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: We need more pros.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: So let's get more pros.
- 18:19SPEAKER_05: So every time that a pro member gets signed up in my brain, I go, Yep, there's 1700 bucks in the plus column, like based on the averages.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: Um, and just getting the team rallied behind like how important it is to have those conversations.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: And it truthfully does actually help people save money and gamify the system.
- 18:36SPEAKER_05: They just coincidentally, because they're doing that, are gonna spend more at the store, right?
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: But in turn, that means that they are creating an equity bank for their health.
- 18:46SPEAKER_05: Because I truthfully believe that supplements can make a ginormous difference in your life.
- 18:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:51SPEAKER_05: Um any anybody that goes to like a uh a whole life like wellness um doctor holistic is what I'm trying to say.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: Doctor, you know, knows that supplements can make a big difference.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: How does leadership uh in roots look different in leadership uh in GNC?
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: It doesn't look any different, it's just another business.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: Uh there may be a deeper relational connection in roots because it some capacity roots will scale past the ability to know all agents and and know their hearts truthfully.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: May know all the names, may know all the people, but actually to know them.
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: So the leadership looks like it's extremely important for me to lead the men and women that will be leading men and women, right?
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: Like there's that's such an honor to even be able to think in that way.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: Because we're like solving the story I'm not buying anymore.
- 19:54SPEAKER_05: It's just the one.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know about you.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: When I first started Reborn, it was named Reborn, but I think a lot of it also was performative.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Where you know, I started at 19, 20 years old and had three grand to my name when I was starting, and it became really an idol and building my self-image as like you know, a successful entrepreneur instead of a child of God.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: How have you in your journey?
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: I guess is that relevant for you in your journey first?
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: That shift from I am da-da-da-da to I am a child of God first and foremost?
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's certainly made a difference.
- 20:51SPEAKER_05: The I I would say the framework of ambition and power.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: So I like to think of grace and truth on a two by two.
- 20:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, so if you're leading with grace and truth, you're being called into the Lord.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: That's how Jesus walked on earth.
- 21:07SPEAKER_05: It's any interaction he had, he was calling people in.
- 21:10SPEAKER_05: Um, and the earthly way of ambition and power is a way that you can check out.
- 21:21SPEAKER_05: So for me, I I don't know if it was as much as idling the title as just having ambition to win.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: It's like I'm gonna figure this thing out.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm gonna figure out how to invest, I'm gonna figure out how to make commissions to turn these into rental properties.
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna figure out, and then it was like, I'm gonna figure out how to be the the best agent in the brokerage.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: Like that was all of 24 for me, was logging in every day and looking at the leaderboard.
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: Like, how close am I to the top?
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: How close am I?
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: And want to be better to have that power to be like, I'm number one, that idol.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: Um, and that's checking out, right?
- 21:50SPEAKER_05: That's you might be leading with uh truth in that because you're doing like you I don't think that you can not be honest and still uh Have ambition and power, right?
- 22:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_05: But you're definitely not leading with grace as much.
- 22:05SPEAKER_05: You're definitely probably uh teetering that line of like, am I totally giving people the room here or am I telling them what to do and to go with me?
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: And that that like I'll be the that is a a confession um that has been had to be overcome.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: That like okay, all ambition to succeed has to come from the Lord.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: So, oh, I have this new profound idea.
- 22:30SPEAKER_05: Okay, awesome.
- 22:31SPEAKER_05: Journal it.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: Did that come from the Lord?
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: Let it sit.
- 22:35SPEAKER_05: And I have like a 10-day policy for myself that a new idea that would be a new um uh initiative in the team or in the brokerage must sit for 10 days.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: And I have if I come back to it, it's always my team's always like, everything's changing so quick.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, it's really not, because I'm just like on a 10-day lag.
- 22:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh, and especially not for me because I've already been thinking about this thing for 10 days, and there's millions of ideas that die before they get brought to light.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: So like the ones that I am bringing to light, you have to take serious and you have to go with me because we go fast, like our team builds fast.
- 23:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and uh it's been fun with employees.
- 23:15SPEAKER_05: Like they I have a an excellent group of guys around me.
- 23:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I have spent so much money hiring the right people and hiring eight players because I've wasted so much money and time not hiring eight players.
- 23:28unknown: Yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Talk to me about that.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because that's something that I think from the outside looking in, meeting some of your team members, they're really cool guys and seem very servant-hearted and very good at what they do.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: What how do how do you find a a talent?
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it uh I asked the same question um to one of my friends who was ahead of me in entrepreneurship.
- 23:53SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, how are you every time that I talk to somebody on your team, I think that they could be you, like they could be running the show.
- 24:01SPEAKER_05: How in the heck have you done that?
- 24:02SPEAKER_05: Uh and he's he shared a template with me, which like was not that crazy.
- 24:07SPEAKER_05: Um, all that it was was a template of a job description, and within it, it had like some kind of trick questions for the uh job like actual form.
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: So like the description had uh trick questions that were gonna be in the application.
- 24:24SPEAKER_05: And so when you post it on LinkedIn, indeed, wherever, Facebook, it's like you put the description out there and you like say, like in the description, it says on the application, we're gonna ask you what your favorite color is.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: The correct answer is green in all caps.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: And so if somebody doesn't answer that correctly on the form, you delete them, you don't interview them, they're just gone.
- 24:44SPEAKER_05: You don't need like you don't even need to reply, like thanks for applying, it doesn't matter because they're not detail oriented.
- 24:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and every job, every position, even a sales position, has to be detail-oriented.
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: Like if you're looking for an A player, truthfully, like what sales guy do you know that is like a top sales dog that does not know his details?
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: He may be overwhelmed and overran and not know his details in the moment.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: When he sits down, he knows how to do the freaking paperwork and he knows what's up.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: Um, so that's just like the a tactful uh hiring skill set.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: Now for identifying a true player, it is talking them through a like kind of a workshop of like um if given X in a day, what will you how will you prioritize your time?
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: Like, here's three tasks.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: And if the response back is the exact opposite of what you would do, like probably not that great.
- 25:36SPEAKER_05: And then the last piece is I think great talent attracts great talent.
- 25:41SPEAKER_05: So, like Trace on our team, he applied, he applied and actually answered one of the questions wrong.
- 25:46SPEAKER_05: He's lucky he got an interview.
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: Um, he got an interview because he kept texting Tyler, like, Am I getting an interview?
- 25:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and Tyler's like, I think you might have answered one of the qualifying questions wrong.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: So Max is like, Hell no, because he knew Tyler before he knew me.
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: And he found us through an Instagram reel and he was attracted to us because what we were talking about was exactly what he wanted to be doing.
- 26:06SPEAKER_05: And then he just followed along, saw the job description on LinkedIn.
- 26:09SPEAKER_05: Like, there's a lot of uh spiritual, godly things that happened to lead us to trace.
- 26:15SPEAKER_05: And the the very, very last piece is just I literally pray like in the evenings after interviewing people.
- 26:22SPEAKER_05: Like Lord is just somebody that placing my life where if I'm recruiting people, it's like, Lord, show me who's going to be the next person on our team.
- 26:30SPEAKER_05: And thus far, they have I've coincidentally met great people right after being ready to recruit, and you know, or months later, it's like, gosh, I thought we were gonna fill that position.
- 26:41SPEAKER_05: Why is that still a bottleneck for us?
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: When you don't, yeah, and then it's like uh they well, you know, it's just God's prophetic timing, you have to wait.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: What is your approach to building roots versus the I feel like the traditional broker to just like get everyone you can in the door so that you can make commission off them?
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I want to hire from the top down, right?
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: That's how you build a great business.
- 27:05SPEAKER_05: So the way that we're moving with roots, uh, because we've actually gotten a little bit too chunky.
- 27:11SPEAKER_05: We have too many people is where we're like where we're at currently.
- 27:15SPEAKER_05: I don't have capacity for an agent that just got licensed, but like we have really, really good agents that just got licensed that will crush, but they need they need more time uh in the training grounds, right?
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: And I can't be the one facilitating the training grounds anymore.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: So what I figured and reflected on is like there's these little pods that have happened over time that we've like we've always recruited in tandem for new agents.
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: We want somebody to like, if you're going through it, go through it with a buddy so that you can learn with them and iron can sharpen iron a little bit.
- 27:47SPEAKER_05: Um, so first it was like Trent and Kyle, they're outstanding agents on our team.
- 27:50SPEAKER_05: If you don't know Trent and Kyle, you should know Trent and Kyle.
- 27:53SPEAKER_05: Um, and I look at the way that they worked, they were working all my overflow.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: So it's like somebody, a buyer that I didn't have capacity for, meet Trent.
- 28:02SPEAKER_05: Buyer didn't have capacity for, meet Kyle and like just put them in a group chat and facilitate it with them.
- 28:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:07SPEAKER_05: So now we have these pods where like Tyler's got a micro team, Ian on our team has a micro team, Kyle has a micro team, Trent has a micro team, the property management company has a micro team.
- 28:17SPEAKER_05: And it's more of building out the systems within.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: It's like everybody should scale sustainably for who's here.
- 28:26SPEAKER_05: So when we're recruiting from the bottom up, they're filling, facilitating a position because the top down's already filled in, right?
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: So like Trent overflows his buyer's agent and needs a or like needs another one.
- 28:37SPEAKER_05: We're gonna recruit another one because Trent is the top.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: If we're looking for super A talent, we're recruiting them saying, Hey, you did 15 million last year, but your wife is like on the verge of leaving you because you've not been home and you're answering the phone at 9 p.m.
- 28:50SPEAKER_05: every night.
- 28:51SPEAKER_05: We have the solution.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: We will recruit talent underneath you and help you build systems and give you specialization of labor that open up boundaries.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: Will you cash flow as much?
- 29:01SPEAKER_05: Probably not, but you might have more sex.
- 29:06SPEAKER_05: That's the pitch.
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: I don't know what guy or girl say no to that.
- 29:17SPEAKER_05: That's a player.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I want to know anything about that.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: I'm single, waiting for marriage, but fair.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Um was not expecting that.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Do you incentivize financially your mini team leaders?
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Or is it more of just a culture thing?
- 29:47SPEAKER_05: Uh it's a culture thing.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: Every single person in our room wants the next to win.
- 29:52SPEAKER_05: And truthfully, it's like if I can tell when somebody's everybody can tell when somebody's overran.
- 29:59SPEAKER_05: They are carrying themselves physically heavier, uh, not smiling as much, not as happy.
- 30:07SPEAKER_05: AJ has walked watched me walk into this podcast room when I'm overran, and he knows it.
- 30:13SPEAKER_05: He doesn't have to, I don't have to say, AJ, I'm completely cooked right now.
- 30:16SPEAKER_05: There's so much on my calendar.
- 30:17SPEAKER_05: He's like, he won't even mention it because he knows, right?
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: And so with that, it's like, how do we uh give them a little bit of alleviation?
- 30:27SPEAKER_05: Of course, the spring, the summer, it's real estate's gonna be busy.
- 30:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but where can we start to come around them and uh make things easier?
- 30:36SPEAKER_05: There is a relational equity, there's there's an emotional margin equation that I use that I think matters more than your balance sheet.
- 30:46SPEAKER_05: So when your emotional margin is at an all-time low, that's when you need more people around you.
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: That's when you need more specialization of labor.
- 30:54SPEAKER_05: Now, does it help to just hire some assistant?
- 30:57SPEAKER_05: No, that's dumb if you're a high-producing agent.
- 30:59SPEAKER_05: Don't go hire a transaction equator assistant.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: They're not gonna do it, they're gonna cause you more problems.
- 31:04SPEAKER_05: You need to come in and hire from the top down.
- 31:08SPEAKER_05: You need a buyer's agent who is just as talented as you.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: Um, and of course, this is like I'm talking with conviction because I've learned it through mistakes, right?
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah uh and Tyler is the prototype co-founder of a high producer that like was burnt out.
- 31:26SPEAKER_05: Okay, you're burnt out.
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: What's the problem?
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm trying to do 15 transactions at once, and I can't even okay, let's get a better TC.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: And it's like, I'm still burnt out, I'm still tired.
- 31:35SPEAKER_05: It's like, shit, okay, that didn't work.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: What's the next thing?
- 31:39SPEAKER_05: Uh let's try to get a listing coordinator in here and pick up some of the weight from there.
- 31:43SPEAKER_05: Nope, that still didn't work.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: It's like the one time that it worked was whenever we went out and we recruited a buyer's agent that, like, I'm not even gonna call her buyer's agent because that has like a connotation to it.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: We hired a badass assistant for him that is just this killer uh real estate agent that could be a 10 million producer if she wanted to be.
- 32:04SPEAKER_05: What she's really good at is the product and the sales.
- 32:07SPEAKER_05: She'll be the first to admit she's not good at the marketing.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: Like she does not do the marketing well.
- 32:12SPEAKER_05: And to be a top one, one, one, one percent of eight, like to be the best and the best in the business as a real estate agent, you have to have the marketing, the sales, and the product down.
- 32:22SPEAKER_05: So your marketing, obviously, everybody knows what that is.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: Your sales is the actual ability to negotiate a contract uh or a commission, buyer's agent agreement or purchase price, any of it.
- 32:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then your your product is the delivery of contracts, is the delivery of inspection knowledge, it's the delivery of photos for a listing, right?
- 32:41SPEAKER_05: It listing the actual home.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: The home is the product, and and when you're in service, you're in that product mode.
- 32:48SPEAKER_05: A lot of people can be good at two out of three of them and stretch to get to three and fake it to be a top producer.
- 32:56SPEAKER_05: But there's very, very few who can do all three.
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: Um, and I have originally I was like, I'm just gonna recruit, I'm gonna find people that can do all three.
- 33:04SPEAKER_05: Dude, people that can do all three are just gonna start a real estate team.
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 33:08SPEAKER_05: Because like they know that they're good at all three, so they can hire out the marketing, they can hire out the sales, the product.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: You have to be good at it to hire somebody.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: So I look at people who are really good at two of them and find somebody else who's good at the other two that maybe they're lacking in the one, and then you complete the pod throughout.
- 33:26SPEAKER_05: It only takes three people to find the like top one, one percent of a microcosm of a larger organization, all eight players.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: How do you get top producers who could sell$10 million to see that weakness?
- 33:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: If they're not already, and to sell them on joining roots that has all that kind of built in for them versus just going out and doing their own thing.
- 33:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that is the uh it's not even the challenge.
- 33:57SPEAKER_05: Um, because if somebody can't see it, I don't want them.
- 34:00SPEAKER_05: Now, some people are too overran to understand it right now, and they might come back around, but uh that's where Tyler the evangelist can go out and do it, right?
- 34:09SPEAKER_05: He's gonna go have that conversation.
- 34:10SPEAKER_05: He's not gonna talk about the sales of it and the splits and the monetary provision, but what he'll talk about is his experience firsthand.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: It's like, yeah, I did 20 million, that was cool.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: It's like didn't have much sex.
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: It was a rough year, right?
- 34:25SPEAKER_05: Uh home life wasn't great, didn't see my kid much.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then I did 10 and it was the opposite.
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: I didn't have enough money.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: And then I figured out I could do 20 again and go on trips every other week and be gone and have a team that's supported me and have marketing that's going out, have handwritten notes that are happening and real estate reviews and and all these great things.
- 34:48SPEAKER_05: That there's an organization that's around him.
- 34:50SPEAKER_05: Um, like legitimately five people that are helping his business move along.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: If you wanted to like five full-time staff members to run that um that arm of the business that'll produce close to like 40 million this year.
- 35:04SPEAKER_05: Um, and it frees him up to do what he loves, which is connect.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: And that's the end all, right?
- 35:10SPEAKER_05: A high producer, there's something that they just love that's play, not work.
- 35:14SPEAKER_05: And we should be doing our play 80% of the time.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: Everybody's gonna work.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: Unless you have a golden retirement number that you can live off your distributions and you're just working for fun, you still gotta like somebody you still have to do the 20% to suck, right?
- 35:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah um, so that's like that's the story, that's what makes it uh it's not easy to attract top talent, but that's what that's how we go about it, is through the model first, and him just sharing his story and testimony of of the way the organization has gone.
- 35:48SPEAKER_05: And then we wait for you know the the big man upstairs to reveal who those people are.
- 35:53unknown: Yeah.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: What does your relationship look like with Tyler and how has that changed or grown over time?
- 36:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I love Tyler.
- 36:02SPEAKER_05: We are the opposite of like skill sets.
- 36:06SPEAKER_05: It's what I'm really good at.
- 36:07SPEAKER_05: Uh he's not so good at, and what he's really good at, I'm not so good at, which like his business development skills are next to none when he can put attention there and energy there.
- 36:18SPEAKER_05: Um, and for Tyler and I, we have the friction that like your our greatest strength is the fact that we cover each other's weaknesses, but that also on its head is the friction.
- 36:33SPEAKER_05: His like what he's good at is my weakness.
- 36:35SPEAKER_05: So when he wants to run, I'm like, no, we shouldn't do that.
- 36:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but why, why, why wouldn't we?
- 36:41SPEAKER_05: And you know, that'll rub.
- 36:43SPEAKER_05: But we've learned to know each other extremely deeply.
- 36:46SPEAKER_05: Like, um, and I oftentimes when I have to bring a new idea or new initiative, I know what the response is gonna be before I walk in, which is cool.
- 36:54SPEAKER_05: It's just like it's a brotherhood that has uh evolved in the last few years.
- 36:58SPEAKER_05: I talked to him probably as much as I talked to my wife, so I've got a pretty deep bond.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: How do you integrate and balance a brotherhood, a friendship, with a business relationship where you still have to be productive?
- 37:10SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 37:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we got into business before we truth truthfully knew much about each other.
- 37:16SPEAKER_05: Um, so the business came first, the friendship has come after.
- 37:20SPEAKER_05: I don't think that I would go the opposite way.
- 37:23SPEAKER_05: There's not many friends in my life that I'd be like, yeah, let's go start a business together.
- 37:27SPEAKER_05: I think that maybe is why it worked.
- 37:29SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 37:29SPEAKER_05: It wasn't intentional.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: Just kind of started working together.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: I guess he took some of a risk by being partners with me.
- 37:38SPEAKER_05: He already had, you know, been successful before I met him in agency, and I was helping him clean up after that success.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Looking at the rest of 2026, quarter one is almost behind us.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: What are you most excited for?
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: I'm most excited for July.
- 37:57SPEAKER_05: Uh our goal is to have 777 Christian men was the original thought, but really just 777 people out into the streets of Indianapolis to clean them up, calling it indie street sweep, uh, a day of caring.
- 38:12SPEAKER_05: So a group that I know you're a part of and I'm a part of, and this is where the men part come of it, uh, Citizen 7.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: There's not there's gonna be a female version of Citizen Seven, so we've opened the event up.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: Uh, we'd love to have 7,777 people if we can on July 7th.
- 38:26SPEAKER_05: Um, but the idea is like, how can we get different congregations across our city that never get to meet each other, right?
- 38:33SPEAKER_05: Every Sunday we go into our little silo and do the church thing.
- 38:37SPEAKER_05: My silo is ginormous, not little at all.
- 38:39SPEAKER_05: Um, and all get into the streets that we live in and serve them back and pick up trash.
- 38:47SPEAKER_05: Um, and just have this simple effort, right?
- 38:51SPEAKER_05: It's not hard.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: 8 a.m.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: to 10 a.m.
- 38:54SPEAKER_05: walking with a trash bag, picking up trash is uh quite easy of an initiative.
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: 777.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: Uh the more I talk about it, the smaller the number feels.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be a big day.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: How is the number seven spoken to you personally?
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: Uh it didn't it didn't speak to me personally.
- 39:14SPEAKER_05: Ironically, 78 is my favorite number, uh, but that's just because I like used to swim and that was my best time, like 48.78.
- 39:23SPEAKER_05: So that's where that came, that's where the 78 came from.
- 39:26SPEAKER_05: The number seven came from Ethan Fernhaber, which I think you said that you have had on the show, and uh uh uh Greg Enos with Citizen Seven.
- 39:35SPEAKER_05: Greg originally, obviously Citizen Seven, right?
- 39:38SPEAKER_05: So there's a seven for him.
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: Um Greg reached out to Ethan about this idea of a day of carrying, 777 Christian men on one day this year, uh potentially on July 7th, all servicing at some point together.
- 39:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, documented or not, just there were 777 acts of service in one day.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: Uh he had this vision and he brought it to Ethan.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: And Ethan connected us in an email.
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: I posted this on LinkedIn, LinkedIn's my favorite social media.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: Um, and I just wrote it out like gotten an email that essentially was uh Ethan saying, Greg, meet Max.
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: Max, Greg has a grand vision for this year.
- 40:19SPEAKER_05: Hope you guys work it out.
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: And then Craig's like, Yes, Max, I want to do this, and brought the 777, and they were like, uh connect me to Lori with C7, and you got got the resources, go.
- 40:34SPEAKER_05: And a month later I come back with the idea of street sweep.
- 40:39SPEAKER_05: Interesting, the divine effort there.
- 40:42SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: So you were the one that came up with the idea for the street sweep specifically, but the idea for all the men coming together was from Greg.
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: Got it.
- 40:54SPEAKER_05: Shared to Ethan.
- 40:55SPEAKER_05: Ethan connected Greg and I.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: What made Ethan think of you for that connection?
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Do you know?
- 41:00SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 41:01SPEAKER_05: Um, I think the Lord that he did though.
- 41:05SPEAKER_05: Um and honestly, it was a I needed something.
- 41:09SPEAKER_05: I was praying for something this year.
- 41:10SPEAKER_05: Like, what is a redemptive servant leadership that I can do outside of the businesses that like I kind of in prayer like isn't going to affect my daily life and scarcity, right?
- 41:24SPEAKER_05: But also like, okay, Lord, like, you know, show me where I need to go.
- 41:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then you know, uh two months later, this gets revealed to me.
- 41:35SPEAKER_05: Um, and it was after I went on a silence retreat this year, and that was one of the three things that I walked out of that silence retreat with was the heart for some service that has an impact.
- 41:48SPEAKER_05: And uh it's it's opened up Street Sweep.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: When the Lord revealed that to you, were you excited about it, or are you like really we're gonna be picking them up trash?
- 41:59SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, I don't the street sweep, I won't take total credit for.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: Honestly, none of these ideas are original.
- 42:06SPEAKER_05: It's just I've been the the apostle put in place to find where we're gonna do these things and how we're gonna do them.
- 42:13SPEAKER_05: Ian Day Felice on my team is the the one who he's always had the idea of Street Sweep.
- 42:19SPEAKER_05: Like when you go to indiestreetsweep.com, he dreamt up all the branding for it, all the colors for it.
- 42:24SPEAKER_05: Coincidentally, like green and cream, like matching roots before roots was roots.
- 42:30SPEAKER_05: I'm almost sure I won't say that with total conviction.
- 42:33SPEAKER_05: He maybe changed the colors uh now that he's you know an agent with us.
- 42:36SPEAKER_05: But uh he had this idea years ago and brought it to me early last year and was like, we should do this.
- 42:43SPEAKER_05: Like, okay, Ethan or Ian, we can do this.
- 42:46SPEAKER_05: Uh we'll figure out a time.
- 42:48SPEAKER_05: And we did a couple as a team and with our vendor partners and some of the community that we built um last year.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: And and 777, I'm like, what could we all possibly do?
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: And of course we need to document it.
- 43:01SPEAKER_05: Like document everything.
- 43:02SPEAKER_05: So, what can we all do that we can actually document and how can we make it like a true wave?
- 43:07SPEAKER_05: Not just this, like a day of caring is and acts of service is so important, like a true uh uh energy shift in the city.
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: What can what could actually make a cosmic change?
- 43:19SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, we're already doing it, Shree Sweep.
- 43:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so uh yeah, the Lord's amazing in the way that we put people in your life to connect all the dots.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: How do you keep a heart pressure of generosity with that with both the act itself and the the content behind it?
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Instead of being performative or like look at me, look at what I'm doing.
- 43:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:40SPEAKER_05: Uh well, because it's not me, right?
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna have I could not possibly bring 777 people together alone.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: There's no there's no shot that I can.
- 43:51SPEAKER_05: And that community is uh the service, right?
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: Like platforming that, and that's the gift that I've been given.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: It's like I am a pioneer.
- 44:02SPEAKER_05: I am an apostle.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: That's like how I've been formed.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: So my goal and life and like the gift is just to be seven steps ahead always.
- 44:12SPEAKER_05: So I'm just way further out in the street sweep land, and I'll leave it up to the Lord.
- 44:18SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 44:19SPEAKER_05: He he blessed me to be able to platform it and he's gonna bring somebody else behind me that will connect all the people.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: You mentioned this idea came to you during a silent retreat.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: What does service?
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: What what does your your time with the Lord look like on a regular basis and even a silent retreat on a recurring basis?
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Uh I would say 23, I was like, I said this earlier, it was just like an infantile time for me getting into the industry.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: I'd studied Christian ministry in college.
- 44:56SPEAKER_05: I would not say that I habitually was a great Christian through that time.
- 45:00SPEAKER_05: Just still exploring, still figuring it out.
- 45:03SPEAKER_05: Um and the I've learned it's a true relationship, like with the Lord.
- 45:10SPEAKER_05: And you kind of have to like, I don't know, how do you have a good relationship?
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: The way that my wife and I have a good relationship is we go out on dates, and when we are on a date, we have a a good, you know, a good build.
- 45:22SPEAKER_05: But whenever we go on a weekend trip together and go away, there's like a deep root that gets formed and a strong connection.
- 45:30SPEAKER_05: Or when we go on vacation for like a long time, it's like, oh, we come back and we're the in the best place in our marriage possible, right?
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: Uh so you have to date the Lord and as as well as put the daily habits in together, right?
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: So like if I was a good husband to Sierra, uh, I'm showing up every single day, having thoughtful conversation, not bringing my technology into the home when I get home and like actually being present, uh, not just talking about our days, but like understanding the emotions that we went through throughout the day and being deeply connected.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: Well, it's the same thing.
- 46:05SPEAKER_05: Like, that's the way that my brain has uh begun to thought about, think about the way that I am with God is like I am in this, I'm in this marriage and it comes first.
- 46:16SPEAKER_05: It's even greater, it's more important.
- 46:18SPEAKER_05: And I'm spending more time with him.
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: Uh and something recently, so I was I was challenged this year to fast or never faster in my life.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: Um, and I did 21 days in February, I'm gonna do 45 uh throughout this entirety of the year.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: And I was praying early 25, like, Lord, reveal a spiritual mentor to me.
- 46:38SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't have somebody in the flesh that's like helping.
- 46:42SPEAKER_05: I have a lot of people who are pouring into me.
- 46:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I don't have somebody who's like directly pouring into this avenue.
- 46:49SPEAKER_05: Um and that's I met Ethan, and Ethan has been thus far like such a great spiritual mentor.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: He's he's so called into that, just like shepherding.
- 47:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, although he would not claim that himself, that that's like his thing.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Um it's been great to to have him and and I thank God that we met.
- 47:11SPEAKER_05: Um and through so through that, you asked about what does the time look like?
- 47:16SPEAKER_05: I'm trying to get to an hour, every single hour, there's some sort of confession or some sort of prayer.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, every single interaction I go into, like taking a moment to just like find my heartbeat again.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: Um, and allow some like quiet time.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: And then the journal, right, is the other place.
- 47:35SPEAKER_05: Like uh this journal becomes something that is either a lot of earthly ideas that get left behind, or they are ideas that are from the Lord that are written in here multiple times over and over and over again.
- 47:48SPEAKER_05: Ideas and thoughts and and frameworks that have to be called back to.
- 47:53SPEAKER_05: Um, and of course, I read scripture and go through the butt like for me, that's just simply not enough.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: Like reading scripture in the morning and in the evening is simply not enough.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: Do you read or do you study?
- 48:08SPEAKER_05: Uh study.
- 48:10SPEAKER_05: I yeah, absolutely study.
- 48:12SPEAKER_05: I would fall asleep if I was just reading.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: Stories aren't like that great.
- 48:17SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: Maybe that's a hot take.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: You kind of reminded me of um when you're talking about marriage and marriage to the Lord.
- 48:26SPEAKER_00: I was just with my one of my spiritual mentors yesterday, and he was telling me how he was prompted.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: He's like, as men, we all want a Proverbs 31 wife.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: But what if we were the Proverbs 31 wife to the Lord?
- 48:45unknown: Yeah.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: Because that's what we are.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: We are, he is our bridegroom.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: So that just reminded me of that.
- 48:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I love that.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: I feel like not many of us think about that super often.
- 48:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's the like it's the consistency and the habit, right?
- 49:02SPEAKER_05: Um it's a choice to me, an earthly choice.
- 49:08SPEAKER_05: Um you can block him out as much as you want, but like you're gonna be filled with the Holy Spirit, right?
- 49:16SPEAKER_05: Um so nobody is called to be a better Christian than somebody else.
- 49:22SPEAKER_05: But we can all make a choice to deepen our relationship and answer when he calls, or even know how to hear.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: I think my only pushback on that, not that you're a better Christian, but like teachers, pastors, or like Paul says, not many of you should be teachers because they're held to a higher standard.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: Fair.
- 49:47SPEAKER_05: Um to me, that would just be like you are you be you go on your own journey, right?
- 49:55SPEAKER_05: And I think that every time that you go through a moment that you can be redeemed through, like you actually go through like a true uh change, a true shift, and you just get a little bit closer to God and a little bit closer to God each and every time.
- 50:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you and your own spiritual journey might be deeper.
- 50:16SPEAKER_05: Now, how you're called to serve could look different.
- 50:19SPEAKER_05: Um, and how much you allow the Lord to be in can be different.
- 50:26SPEAKER_05: But I'm not gonna compare myself to the guy next to me, I guess is what I'm saying.
- 50:29SPEAKER_05: More so.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: We all look a little different, we all talk a little different.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: I think also when you compare yourself to others, it can very easily become performative and people pleasing.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: Like, why don't I be more like that person?
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: No, actually, why don't I just be more like the Lord?
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: And that's that like calling back to because it's open in front of me, the ambition and power, checking out.
- 50:55SPEAKER_05: It's like, no, calling in is like going to the glory and the kingdom, right?
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: Like the ambition can still exist.
- 51:02SPEAKER_05: Uh just is the ambition something that the Lord is calling you to be ambitious about, like is that is a task, right?
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: It's like you gotta lean in to it.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: AJ and I were talking before the episode.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: Excellence comes from the Lord, comes from the Holy Spirit, comes from overflow.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: If you're not spending time, I've I've been excellent in my work, quote unquote, and felt extremely stressed.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: And now I believe I'm excellent in my work, and I really am probably the you were talking about emotional margin.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: I have a lot of emotional margin right now, yeah.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: Um, which allows me to show up better with more leadership, better leadership presence, better on the podcast, better in everything that I do, but it's because of that time overflowing, being rooted, being reborn in the secret place, in discipleship, in um, you know, close friendships, family, and so on.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: Um so that's something I'm really leaning into right now is just overflowing, not how can I get other people to think higher of me or how can I achieve X, Y, and Z, but how can I run my race that the Lord said ahead of me well.
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that.
- 52:24SPEAKER_05: That's huge.
- 52:25SPEAKER_05: Congrats on that.
- 52:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: Uh the emotional margin is something that's great when you have it.
- 52:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 52:32SPEAKER_05: That's hard when you don't.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: Very much so.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: That's that's where what you are very good at is uh very helpful.
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: Have having a players on your team.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I can completely check out for a month if I need to go find that emotional margin.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: Financially, maybe not.
- 52:52SPEAKER_05: Couldn't check out, but like it's just money, right?
- 52:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, there's a credit score, who cares?
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: Um I'm actually gonna take from your guys' book, from Ruth's book, and ask you a couple rapid fire.
- 53:08SPEAKER_04: Let's do it.
- 53:09SPEAKER_00: Um what is a popular real estate take right now that you think is wrong or incomplete?
- 53:16SPEAKER_05: Popular real estate take, I think, is wrong or incomplete.
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: I don't think rates will stay as low as they are.
- 53:36SPEAKER_05: I don't think we corrected enough.
- 53:38SPEAKER_05: And there is not a shiny ball or whatever that's gonna come next year.
- 53:44SPEAKER_05: Like I'm already hearing the mumblings this spring that no, it'll be better next year.
- 53:49SPEAKER_05: Oh, we went to war, so it's gotten worse, so it's gonna be better next year.
- 53:52SPEAKER_05: It's like it's not going to be better in our market in Indianapolis than it is right now.
- 53:59SPEAKER_05: It won't be cheaper to buy a home next year.
- 54:02SPEAKER_05: And in fact, it will be worse because you're right next to everybody else and they're right in line because guess what's happening this year?
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: And this is the take that nobody's talking about.
- 54:10SPEAKER_05: 50% of investors are entering back into the marketplace.
- 54:14SPEAKER_05: 70% fled in 2023.
- 54:16SPEAKER_05: So we've been operating on 30% for the last few years.
- 54:19SPEAKER_05: Half of that 70 is coming back this year, which means that when we enter into next year, the other half are gonna return along with all the other consumers and just like you know, regular people that need to move.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:32SPEAKER_05: Because we've had enough years of like, all right, your 3% rate, dope, doesn't matter anymore.
- 54:37SPEAKER_05: You have enough, like you literally have so much equity that it doesn't matter anymore.
- 54:40SPEAKER_05: Which means rates aren't gonna come down further because we don't need that that over correction because equity and appreciation has done its thing.
- 54:48SPEAKER_05: Austin's gonna be okay, it's coming back.
- 54:51SPEAKER_05: Uh Tennessee is another one that's been hurting, California's doing just fine, like everywhere has corrected.
- 55:05SPEAKER_00: Throw this one in there.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: How do you want fruit to show up in your life in various areas?
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: G and C roots, your family, friendships.
- 55:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I love the idea of like multiplication.
- 55:23SPEAKER_05: It's just a profound thing that you learn in like what second or third grade?
- 55:26SPEAKER_05: Two times two equals four, right?
- 55:28SPEAKER_05: So like who can I have an impact on this year that then go out and become a branch to the next, to the next, to the next, to the next.
- 55:36SPEAKER_05: Because like if I took five guys and every single morning we like got on the phone and prayed with each other, and in their minds, like all it took for me was one person praying.
- 55:46SPEAKER_05: Like this idea of prayer, like one person saying, Can I pray with you?
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: to change like the Lord use that one person to be a moment for me, a huge Kairos moment.
- 55:57SPEAKER_05: So, what who who else can uh that be affected by?
- 56:01SPEAKER_05: So we pray at our real estate events.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sounds a lot like abiding in the vine.
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: If you could leave one challenge with the listeners right now, what would it be?
- 56:13SPEAKER_05: Action solves all your problems.
- 56:15SPEAKER_05: So, like whatever you have going on, if you're worried about like what you have going on, and and that's your action is like more worry, then you're just stacking up more problems for yourself.
- 56:26SPEAKER_05: So, like get out of whatever space you're in, walk outside, think about the problem, and come back in and do shit, and it's gonna be okay.
- 56:37SPEAKER_05: It's my challenge.
- 56:39SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: Well, this was Max Moore.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: Max, thank you for coming on.
- 56:44SPEAKER_00: Um where can people find you?
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: And uh, I know you mentioned indie streetsweep.com earlier for the street sweep July 7th.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what else would you like people to know?
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, look up rootsreality.co backslash events.
- 56:58SPEAKER_05: Come check out one of our events, and it'll be a great way to meet me.
- 57:01SPEAKER_05: I I love networking in the flesh.
- 57:04SPEAKER_05: Um, you can go to you know, search up roots on any social media platform, and you'll arrive at my personal channels.
- 57:11SPEAKER_05: I post on there sometimes.
- 57:13SPEAKER_05: LinkedIn would be a huge one though.
- 57:14SPEAKER_05: Look me up on LinkedIn.
- 57:15SPEAKER_05: I love I love LinkedIn, I love writing.
- 57:19SPEAKER_05: Sweet.
- 57:20SPEAKER_05: Thanks for having me up.
- 57:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
