- 0:12Hello friends. Sean, here it is Tuesday, it's
- 0:16the 5th of December and you have pressed play and that is the
- 0:21best decision you have made today.
- 0:24That may not be true. You might have made some cracker
- 0:26decisions, but this is a particularly good one as well.
- 0:28Good on you. Thank you for inviting me in as
- 0:31today you and I, we're going to continue working through this
- 0:35final section of Isaiah. And as we spoke about yesterday,
- 0:39this is the part of Isaiah where Isaiah is writing to his people,
- 0:46to the people of Israel as they are returning to their land from
- 0:50Babylon trying to work out how do they live as God's people.
- 0:54And today he is going to be encouraging them from God that
- 0:59when they do the right things that it's not just lip service
- 1:01and and a show, but it has to be for the benefit of God and not
- 1:06to to make themselves look good. So this is about the heart of
- 1:10what it is that they do to make sure that their hearts are
- 1:14genuine in worship. That is probably not a bad thing
- 1:17for us to hear as we are surrounded by a world that tells
- 1:21us it's all about what it looks like.
- 1:23It's all about appearances, the surface, the thing that looks
- 1:26good on a billboard that is ACE and that is super important, but
- 1:30it ain't so, friends. We know that and we are going to
- 1:34hear God reinforce that message as we read together today.
- 1:38Isaiah Chapter 58. Shout with the voice of a
- 1:53trumpet blast. Shout aloud.
- 1:55Don't be timid. Tell my people Israel of their
- 1:58sins, yet they act so pious. They come to the temple every
- 2:04day and seem delighted to learn all about me.
- 2:08They act like a righteous nation that would never abandoned the
- 2:11laws of its God. They ask me to take action on
- 2:14their behalf, pretending they want to be near me.
- 2:18We have fasted before you, they say.
- 2:21Why aren't you impressed? We have been very hard on
- 2:25ourselves and you don't even notice.
- 2:28I will tell you why I respond. It's because you are fasting to
- 2:32please yourselves. Even while you fast, you keep
- 2:36oppressing your workers. What good is fasting when you
- 2:40keep on fighting and quarrelling?
- 2:42This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me.
- 2:46You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance,
- 2:50bowing your heads like reeds, bending in the wind.
- 2:54You dress and burlap and cover yourselves with ashes.
- 2:58Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will
- 3:01please the Lord? No.
- 3:04This is the kind of fasting I want.
- 3:07Free those who are wrongly imprisoned lighten the burden of
- 3:12those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free and
- 3:17remove the chains that bind people.
- 3:20Share your food with the hungry and give shelter to the
- 3:23homeless. Give clothes to those who need
- 3:26them and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
- 3:31Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds
- 3:36will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you
- 3:39forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from
- 3:43behind. Then when you call, the Lord
- 3:48will answer Yes. Here I am.
- 3:51He will quickly reply. Remove the heavy yoke of
- 3:55oppression. Stop pointing your finger and
- 3:58spreading vicious rumors. Feed the hungry and help those
- 4:02in trouble. Then your light will shine out
- 4:06from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as
- 4:10bright as noon. The Lord will guide you
- 4:13continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring
- 4:18your strength. You will be like a well watered
- 4:22garden, like an ever flowing spring.
- 4:26Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities
- 4:30and you will be known as rebuilder of walls and restorer
- 4:35of homes. Keep the Sabbath day holy.
- 4:40Don't pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the
- 4:43Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the Lord's holy day.
- 4:49Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don't
- 4:53follow your own desires or talk idly.
- 4:56Then the Lord will be your delight.
- 4:59I will give you great honor and satisfy you with the inheritance
- 5:04I promised to your ancestor, Jacob.
- 5:07I, the Lord, have spoken. Jesus, you see our hearts.
- 5:24You know what's going on inside us, and that that is the prize
- 5:29that you want for yourself. Not the things that we do and
- 5:33the words that we say, but the intentions of our heart.
- 5:41But you know we have stubborn hearts.
- 5:43We have selfish hearts. We have tired and lazy hearts
- 5:48that find it hard to extend beyond ourselves and the
- 5:52immediate needs before us. We need your help, Lord.
- 5:57So please soften our hearts, shape them, draw them back to
- 6:01you so that we truly can have hearts for the oppressed, hearts
- 6:07for those whose burdens are heavy, so that we would choose
- 6:11to act in their favour just as you want us to, so that we can
- 6:16be agents of your Kingdom in this world, Your Kingdom, which
- 6:20doesn't uphold the powerful and exploit the weak, but your
- 6:24Kingdom, which shines a light on the needs of those with the
- 6:29greatest need. Help us be your voice.
- 6:33Help us help our hands and our feet.
- 6:37Act and move to the rhythm of your heart so that we really can
- 6:42make this world a place that reflects your values.
- 6:45Let us be your active agents here, whatever that looks like
- 6:51today. Lord, shove us into those
- 6:55spaces, even if we don't want to be there, so that we can make a
- 6:59difference the way that you would have us do.
- 7:01So we love you and we pray all of these things in your name,
- 7:06Jesus. Amen.
