- 0:04Podcast. This is a show where we discuss
- 0:07the critical crossroads, the Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The

- 0:20It's great to see a lot of familiar faces out there.
- 0:25For those joining us online, we're here in the Boring Company
- 0:28Tunnel for our latest product unveil and right on brand of
- 0:33this, this event is powered by Megapacks and Cyber truck.
- 0:39All right, let's get started. At Tesla, we are building a
- 0:45world filled with sustainable abundance powered by sustainable
- 0:48energy. And tonight we are launching the
- 0:51next chapter in that vision. We are an engineering centric
- 0:56and engineering LED company and we believe that electric
- 0:58vehicles, charging, storage and solar and autonomy, they are not
- 1:03separate tools, but they are one of they are part of 1 seamless
- 1:07solution set. We are leveraging our
- 1:10manufacturing expertise. We are leveraging our
- 1:14manufacturing expertise to produce products affordably and
- 1:17at scale, increasing the reliability, increasing the
- 1:21reliability of clean energy and transportation in our
- 1:24communities. Tesla offers hardware, software,
- 1:28controls and service all under one roof.
- 1:30We have engineers across the full spectrum of product
- 1:33development, energy projects and manufacturing.
- 1:36It's really what allows us to innovate and iterate quickly to
- 1:39produce the best products in the world.
- 1:43Now in 2023, we introduced Master Plan Part 3 and we
- 1:46outlined how the entire Earth could be run off sustainable
- 1:48energies using technologies we have today.
- 1:52In order to eliminate fuels, we need eliminate fossil fuels.
- 1:54We need to power the grid within renewables, but to do that, that
- 1:58requires massive batteries. In order to achieve a fully
- 2:02sustainable economy, we calculated that the world needed
- 2:0546 terawatt hours or 46,000 GW hours of storage.
- 2:11Now we know, we know not all of that is going to be a mega pack,
- 2:13but we are excited to continue being a leader in the space and
- 2:17transforming the grid to a sustainable future.
- 2:21But this transformation is not just about renewables.
- 2:25Global electricity demand is projected to increase by 3%
- 2:29annually, driven by electrification, manufacturing,
- 2:32and data centers. AI data centers alone is
- 2:36projected to make up to 10% of the US energy demand by 20-30.
- 2:41This rate of load growth hasn't been seen in the US since the
- 2:43early 2000s. Load is rapidly growing and to
- 2:48be honest, the grid is not growing fast enough to keep up.
- 2:53What's interesting to note is that the grid is traditionally
- 2:55built to handle the highest demand moments, but for most of
- 2:58the day or even most of the year, it is far below capacity.
- 3:02It operates far below capacity. Some estimates state that the
- 3:05grid is about 50% utilized here in the US and said another way,
- 3:0950% of the grid infrastructure sits idle and unused most of the
- 3:12year. Batteries are are an ideal
- 3:15solution to help the grid utilize more of its own supply.
- 3:20Let's just look at this example. So it's this is an example load
- 3:22over the course of seven days and you can see the grid
- 3:24capacity in the dash red line and obviously it is greater than
- 3:27the load which it should be. Now let's add in a new data
- 3:30center load which just shifts our entire load up with the peak
- 3:33now exceeding the the grid capacity.
- 3:37So traditionally this peak wood forest the grid to install more
- 3:41infrastructure generation transmission substations just to
- 3:45serve that new peak. It would raise the entire dashed
- 3:48line, but it's an intuitive conclusion to see that batteries
- 3:52could support that peak. And in the process, we are
- 3:55increasing the utilization and the efficiency of our existing
- 3:58infrastructure. So with the growth of renewables
- 4:03and the strain on the grid, the need for storage is real and we
- 4:07are racing to solve these challenges.
- 4:12Our growth with Megapack over the last several years has been
- 4:15exponential. We have over 36 GW hours
- 4:18installed across 60 countries and over 2100 projects.
- 4:28And we have another 30 GW hours projected to come online soon
- 4:32with product that we have already shipped.
- 4:34We've scaled our manufacturing facilities to greater than 80 GW
- 4:38hours of manufacturing capacity annually, but we recognize we
- 4:43still have a long ways to go. We're just at the beginning as
- 4:47the world needs 2.3 terawatt hours annually to support a
- 4:50sustainable energy economy. We're up for the challenge.
- 4:54But how do we go faster? I'm glad you asked.
- 5:00How do we meet this challenge of a growing energy demand and
- 5:03strained grid infrastructure? We need fully integrated
- 5:07solutions that consider the entire scope and the lifetime of
- 5:10these projects. We need solutions that are
- 5:13secure, scalable, resilient, and that inspire confidence in the
- 5:17technology. And quite simply, we need to
- 5:21figure out how to connect into the grid faster.
- 5:24So when we started developing the latest iteration of
- 5:26Megapack, we focused on three guiding principles #1 simplicity
- 5:31and speed. We recognized that complexity
- 5:35creates risk and it adds delays. In order to simplify and go
- 5:39faster, we need to figure out how to make it easier further
- 5:41upstream in the project #2 we needed a flexible platform.
- 5:48The grids needs and the industry are evolving quickly.
- 5:52We need a platform that is able to navigate supply chain
- 5:55complexities, policy changes and evolving technologies.
- 6:01And #3 we need to continue what we do best and leverage our
- 6:03vertical integration. We need to enhance the things
- 6:07that we've done well with Megapack and learn from our past
- 6:11generations of products and projects that we've built around
- 6:14the world. So we're excited to introduce
- 6:18our next generation product, the next iteration of innovation
- 6:21born from necessity. Yeah.
- 7:04All right. We're excited to announce Mega
- 7:10Block, the latest evolution in our industrial storage product
- 7:13lineup. This isn't just a new container
- 7:16or a white box with new specs. We focused on this product being
- 7:19a plug and play platform, hardware, software, services
- 7:23delivered as one all from Tesla and moving further up the value
- 7:27stream than we historically have.
- 7:29Our Mega Block platform is designed for 20 MW hours of
- 7:32usable AC energy, a 25 year life, 10,000 cycles and with an
- 7:38industry leading round trip efficiency of 91%.
- 7:43So what is Mega Block? Let's take a closer look.
- 7:48Mega Block is a pre engineered medium voltage block that
- 7:51integrates our next generation Megapack Threes.
- 7:54We have eliminated the above ground cabling between the
- 7:57transformer and the Megapacks using a new flexible busbar
- 8:00assembly. So we've essentially made this
- 8:02part of the project now plug and play.
- 8:05Each block connects to a Tesla system controller, which
- 8:09orchestrates control of the entire site of up to hundreds of
- 8:12Megapacks. We've combined these hardware
- 8:15innovations with the same power electronics, site controls,
- 8:19software and firmware platforms that we've used on previous
- 8:23Megapack generations to reduce the risk and allow for a
- 8:26seamless technology transition. And really, with Megapack 3, we
- 8:32optimize the product for both mass and energy.
- 8:35It was important to us to be able to fit the maximum amount
- 8:38of energy per unit mass because mass is really where the system
- 8:41breaks. We were able to fit 5 MW hours
- 8:44of AC usable energy into 86,000 LB box 28 foot long enclosure
- 8:49that can be shipped globally. We manufacture it in one place
- 8:52to maintain quality and ship a pre assembled product anywhere
- 8:56in the world. Megapack 3 is optimized for up
- 9:00to 8 hour applications and it builds on our proven silicon
- 9:03carbide, Tesla inverters and our Fire Protection system.
- 9:07The new thermal Bay is drastically simplified.
- 9:10It uses the Tesla Model Y heat pump essentially on steroids and
- 9:13has 78% fewer connections, which minimizes failure points.
- 9:19We've also also introduced a larger battle battery module and
- 9:22a larger a larger cell leveraging the latest in cell
- 9:26technology. And I wanted to talk about the
- 9:29cell and the supply chain a little bit because obviously
- 9:31that's a, that's a key component in the industry.
- 9:32Right now. Megapack 3 is using a 2.8 liter
- 9:36cell. It's Co engineered with Tesla's
- 9:38cell team and sourced from reliable vendors worldwide.
- 9:42And now with Tesla Megapack factories in the US and China,
- 9:46we'll be sourcing cells from the US, Southeast Asia and China,
- 9:51making Mega Block a flexible platform ready to handle supply
- 9:54disruptions, policy changes and technology evolution.
- 9:58For example, we made sure that the platform didn't need to be
- 10:01overhauled. If we want to introduce a 5
- 10:03liter cell, we have multiple transformer vendors qualified
- 10:07and tested to validate performance from the cell level
- 10:10to the medium voltage level. Megapack 3 will be manufactured
- 10:15in Houston in late 2026 with a manufacturing capacity of 50 GW
- 10:20hours per year. Mega Block works even in the
- 10:25harshest climates, with an industry leading operating range
- 10:29down to -40°C up to 60°, which means we can operate from the
- 10:34northern reaches of Alaska and Canada to the hottest parts of
- 10:38the Atacama Desert in Chile and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
- 10:41And one of our core principles, again, in designing Mega Pack
- 10:47Three with simplicity, it's easy to make things more complicated
- 10:50as you're thinking about evolving a new product line.
- 10:53And we wanted to avoid that. We wanted to do what we did well
- 10:56with Megapack 2XL, which was build a product in the factory
- 11:00that is factory tested, ship it to the field, ready to connect
- 11:03to the grid with 0 onsite assembly.
- 11:07So that effect, Megapack 3 can be easily transported using A7
- 11:11axle trailer with no onsite assembly.
- 11:15And with a higher energy rating, we have less Megapacks reducing
- 11:18the costs and we went from up to 24 cable connections between the
- 11:22Megapack and the transformer down to three simple busbar
- 11:25connections. Overall, Megabock is installed
- 11:29with 23% less labor hours, up to 40% lower costs and it's
- 11:35engineered for site level density.
- 11:40Now it's it's no secret that the industry has been trending
- 11:43towards higher and higher energy density containers.
- 11:45But as we developed this product, we realized there was a
- 11:48fundamental problem with that approach.
- 11:50Once you exceed the maximum shipping weight, you introduce
- 11:53risky and costly transportation permits and trailers or you you
- 11:58resort to on site assembly, installing batteries in the
- 12:01field, validating, integrating, commissioning them and not doing
- 12:04that in a factory setting. And the metric that actually
- 12:09matters is site level density, which includes the clearances on
- 12:12the ground needed to install and service your product.
- 12:18Said simply, it's, it's, it's not about what you can fit on
- 12:20your site. It's, I'm sorry, it is what you
- 12:23can fit on the site. It's not about what you can fit
- 12:25in the box. This is where we put our focus
- 12:28and our energy, site level, energy density and testing in
- 12:31the factory. And with that focus, Megapack
- 12:33delivery is an industry leading site level density.
- 12:40Commissioning speed. Commissioning speed is key.
- 12:42It really is what drives value because time is money,
- 12:45especially to a lot of people in this room.
- 12:47These large capital projects are tough.
- 12:49They require hundreds of people working across several
- 12:52disciplines over the course of months or years.
- 12:56Things that might go wrong probably will go wrong in that
- 12:58process and you need a partner that's going to stand by you
- 13:00through the whole process. With Mega Block we are targeting
- 13:04to Commission one GW hour in 20 business days, which is the
- 13:08equivalent of bringing power to 400,000 homes in less than a
- 13:12month, which is crazy. How are we planning to do that?
- 13:22Like most things at Tesla, we are ruthlessly attacking every
- 13:25opportunity to save our customers time.
- 13:28Simplify the process, remove steps, automate as much as you
- 13:32can. One example is how we use
- 13:34simulation. So we like to bring our
- 13:37customers and sometimes utilities and grid operators
- 13:40into a room with our engineers, sometimes months before the
- 13:43Megapacks are even delivered to the site.
- 13:46And we can take your actual hardware and your software
- 13:48controls, the actual software that you'll be using on your
- 13:51site. Simulate the grid at the exact
- 13:54point in the grid where you will be connecting and run a bunch of
- 13:58simulations, control scenarios, grid, grid scenarios to see is
- 14:02this going to work like I thought it would work.
- 14:04It's essentially a peek into the future to see if the project is
- 14:07going to work. Our customers love it.
- 14:10It's a great opportunity to sort out different bugs in the
- 14:13software and it allows you to have confidence that when the
- 14:17mega packs are connected to the grid, it is going to work.
- 14:21Commissioning this fast is a great example of how our
- 14:23vertical integration, our engineers across the full
- 14:26spectrum allow us to serve our customers.
- 14:31So at Tesla, we do more than build the batteries.
- 14:36With most battery OEMs and integrators, you have to go to
- 14:39different companies for different parts.
- 14:41The batteries for one, the inverter from someone else,
- 14:44service from someone else, maybe site controls again for 1/4
- 14:48counterpart. And you can imagine piercing all
- 14:50those things together and being successful can be difficult.
- 14:54What sets us apart and what we're proud about is our ability
- 14:57to provide all your needs in one place, to be your partner
- 14:59through the whole process. We provide hardware, software,
- 15:03service fully integrated in one package.
- 15:06And I just wanted to take a moment to talk about how this
- 15:08full ecosystem has helped our customers.
- 15:14Autobidder is our autonomous energy trading platform.
- 15:18It's built all right. It's built by Tesla's machine
- 15:24learning optimization software engineers.
- 15:26And in its most basic form, it is buying low and selling high.
- 15:30But in reality, there is hundreds of decisions that need
- 15:33to occur in real time in order to maximize profits.
- 15:36So here's an example leaderboard from ERCOT in Texas of one of
- 15:40Tesla's projects and it shows us at the top of the leaderboard in
- 15:44revenue per MW installed. And the reason I wanted to bring
- 15:48this up is that it's This site is not an exception.
- 15:51Autobidder launched in 2017 and we have maintained leadership in
- 15:56every market we operate in by constantly adapting and evolving
- 15:59our our algorithm. We're excited to launch into
- 16:03France later this year. We discussed grid forming
- 16:10software at Investor Day a few years ago, and we talked about
- 16:12how it's going to be the future of the grid.
- 16:13And honestly, there's been a ton of momentum over the past couple
- 16:17years. So what is it exactly?
- 16:20The analogy is that it contributes to grid stability,
- 16:22the way a car's shock absorber dampens vibrations and keeps the
- 16:26ride smooth. And the reality is you can't
- 16:29have a fully sustainable grid run on run on renewables without
- 16:33grid forming software. It's what allows us to take the
- 16:35traditional generation off of the grid.
- 16:39And I still, I still frequently hear that this technology is not
- 16:42ready and it's still in the R&D phase.
- 16:45This is simply not true. Tesla has been deploying grid
- 16:49forming software since 2016. We have it operating on over 600
- 16:53projects, 600 projects across 4 GW hours with 10 GW hours coming
- 17:01online soon. Here you're looking at Plus
- 17:06Powers, Plus Powers project in Oahu.
- 17:10This project allowed the island to start the start
- 17:13decommissioning and start taking the last coal power plant
- 17:15offline. It represents over 20% of the
- 17:19island's peak load. And recently and a few times
- 17:22actually, the battery has been able to stabilize the grid when
- 17:24one of the generators trips offline.
- 17:26It's doing that using grid forming software.
- 17:29So it works. It is the future and we are
- 17:32excited to see how it stabilizes grids around the world.
- 17:38All right, Our global service organization, this team is the
- 17:42best. They're they're, they're the
- 17:45best team in the world. And we're super proud.
- 17:47We're super proud of them. And I say that because over this
- 17:52last year, they, we, we had 99.3% uptime on our projects
- 17:56around the world. And that is a big fleet to
- 17:58maintain above 99%. So, yeah, so how how are we
- 18:06doing this? Again, it's like everything
- 18:07else, simplify the process, remove steps, automate where you
- 18:12can. We are using automation to
- 18:15detect issues and to trigger our field service teams to action
- 18:18around the world. We have over the air firmware
- 18:21updates that increase the performance and the security of
- 18:24the product over the lifetime of the project just like we do with
- 18:28the vehicles. And we have an entire
- 18:31engineering team building software and hardware service
- 18:34tools that are purpose built for Megapack, making every step
- 18:37quicker and faster and focusing on time.
- 18:40This year we also launched our certified service provider
- 18:43program. This enables our customers and
- 18:45third parties access to all the service tools that our internal
- 18:49teams have been using for years. This enables our customers like
- 18:53Southern Company to take advantage to take Megapack
- 18:57service into their own hands. We are excited to bring our full
- 19:02software suite and our service platform to Mega Block.
- 19:07And one day, not too distant future, we can see Optimus being
- 19:11a field service technician, reducing costs for both us and
- 19:13for our customers. Mega Block builds on 10 years of
- 19:21project experience around the world.
- 19:24It is simple, it's fast to install, it's flexible, and you
- 19:29get all the integrated service and software that you've come to
- 19:31love by working with Tesla, because with Tesla, and really
- 19:35it's been been like this since the beginning of the Megapack
- 19:38program. The project is really our
- 19:40product. Global power infrastructure is
- 19:46under pressure and we need scalable and reliable energy
- 19:49solutions that can deploy quickly.
- 19:52Mega Block accelerates the ability to solve these problems.
- 19:55The people in this room, you guys are the ones changing the
- 19:58world. You guys are building the
- 19:59projects. You're developing it over the
- 20:01course of a long time and investing your money.
- 20:03We are excited to transform. We are excited and humbled to
- 20:05transform the grid with you. Together, we can deploy the
- 20:09terawatt hours needed to power a sustainable future.
- 20:13And tonight, we're excited to have a prototype of Megapack 3
- 20:15upstairs. I just want to say thank you to
