- 0:00It's fall, right?
- 0:01Back to school, back to work, vacation's over.
- 0:06This is your weekly girlfriend chat, the kind that we all crave, where we can show up exactly as we are, laugh until we cry, get honest about the things we're navigating,
- 0:16And all the private girl talk that we need more of.
- 0:19No pressure, no perfection, just real women like us sharing real stories with real connections.
- 0:25Over the years of Tonidab, I've learned that the most transformative moments don't always happen in a workout.
- 0:31They happen in those conversations before and after.
- 0:34And.
- 0:34when we realize we're all going through something, when we feel seen.
- 0:39And that's what Tone It Down is built on.
- 0:41My intention is simple, to help you tune back into yourself, to quiet the noise, and to remind you that you're allowed to evolve.
- 0:51This is Tone It Down.
- 0:52I don't know about you, but do you remember...
- 1:00way back in the day when we would be going back to school in the fall.
- 1:04And there was like this uncertainty and it was like a new notebook, a new pen, new class schedule, new schedule, this new, new, new, new, new, new, new.
- 1:13And it kind of like was overwhelming.
- 1:18Welcome to Tone It Down.
- 1:19I'm Karina Dahn.
- 1:21I'm your friend.
- 1:21I'm your host.
- 1:23And I'm just having a little sit down with you today and a fall check-in.
- 1:28I got my notes here.
- 1:29I got a few things I want to cheat-chate about.
- 1:31But really, I'm just going to kind of talk and catch up.
- 1:34And yeah, it's fall, right?
- 1:36Back to school, back to work, vacations over.
- 1:39A lot of different transitions, but it's kind of like this interesting...
- 1:44in-between period, like right now, because the holidays haven't quite hit yet and they're coming.
- 1:52But you're like this anticipation, right?
- 1:56Sometimes it can be overwhelming and you're trying to get on a new routine, but you just can't quite get it.
- 2:03So I'm here to help.
- 2:04that's one thing I want to talk to you about today is the fall challenge very quickly.
- 2:09And it ties into one of the other topics that has come across on the podcast, in my DMs, with my friends.
- 2:17And that's like this loneliness epidemic that's still going on.
- 2:20And here's how the two tie together as I was journaling and thinking.
- 2:25And summer is so fun.
- 2:27And then it's back to biz.
- 2:29So Fall Challenge, it does start October 12th in your Tone It Up app.
- 2:35We start signups October 1st, so make sure you head over to ToneItUp.com to sign up for it.
- 2:41And if you're not an app member yet, go to ToneItUp.com slash activate.
- 2:47And here's a little gift for you if you're new to the app and you go to ToneItUp.com slash activate and enter T-I-D 20.
- 2:55It's 20% off your annual membership.
- 2:57All right.
- 2:58So back to the fall challenge and the why and the loneliness.
- 3:02I've sat at this table and had a conversation with a few people on the podcast and talking about how like 40s and 50s, there's this loneliness in women.
- 3:12And we're so used to when we're younger and especially pre-2020.
- 3:17Think about it.
- 3:17A lot of your friendships were formed in the workplace.
- 3:21So that's, you know, you spend eight hours a day with your work buddies and you have these friendships.
- 3:27I mean, it's so incredible, too.
- 3:29I follow all of the old Tone It Up HQ employees on Instagram and they're all in each other's weddings.
- 3:35They're all still together.
- 3:37And it warms my heart so much to know that we were able to make that connection with these women and that they still have that.
- 3:45But in a workplace where it's a lot of remote work, even for myself, I mean, let's use myself as an example.
- 3:51Because I was just talking to Bobby about, I'm like, I don't think I have any friends anymore.
- 3:57But here's why.
- 3:59Let's see.
- 3:59As we get older, we take care of our parents.
- 4:03We, maybe your parents have passed away.
- 4:05There's a lot of grief.
- 4:07For me, I have been in contract negotiations over and over again.
- 4:13Finally bought Tonidot back.
- 4:15And that was a lot of work, but it takes away.
- 4:17I'm so focused on work.
- 4:18And then there's the getting in the back end.
- 4:20And that was eight months of work, just really seeing what was going on in the tech side and everything in the back end.
- 4:29Like.
- 4:30If I'm ever missing, that's where I am.
- 4:32I'm back there.
- 4:33But it's just been so much work and we get so consumed in work.
- 4:38And our spouse, in my case, becomes our best friend and our therapist.
- 4:43So then it's like, okay, I got to figure this out here.
- 4:46So I intentionally was like, women our age...
- 4:52are missing that nostalgia, that time where we all hung out together and had these beautiful friendships and carefree life, pre all these responsibilities and adulting, like really adulting, you know what I mean?
- 5:05So I was like this nostalgia and I felt the community, the Tone Up community was feeling it too.
- 5:10And always wanting to go back to the beach and talking about the old workouts and always having them on repeat.
- 5:16So that's what the fall challenge was.
- 5:18Number one, to heal my own, like, I want to connect.
- 5:22It's like, let's do the fall challenge.
- 5:24And if you've done these workouts before, welcome back.
- 5:26This is your homecoming, right?
- 5:28And if you're new to Tone It Up, this is the perfect way to...
- 5:31feel how the community supports one another through workouts, through friendship, through connection, through non-judgment.
- 5:38So we've got fall back to the beach, 21 days to change your ways, because number one, 21 days to create a habit, which let me talk about that too, and why fall challenge is like the challenge that always like kind of slips away.
- 5:55Because we're always like, oh, I'll wait till January.
- 5:58I'll wait till January.
- 6:00But why wait till January?
- 6:01Why not prepare yourself for the holiday season so you have your routine?
- 6:06So if the family get together throws you off, you're good.
- 6:10Your mental health, your physical health, you are feeling grounded.
- 6:13You have been meditating in your toned up app.
- 6:16Nothing's going to take you down.
- 6:19So...
- 6:20That is why I think the fall challenge is so important.
- 6:23But also the connection.
- 6:24Let's go back to the connection here.
- 6:25I really want us to all come together.
- 6:27Hashtag TIU team.
- 6:29Find someone.
- 6:30Reach out to someone in the Tone It Up community or bring in somebody new who wants the support for their physical fitness, for their health, and come together and support each other through this season.
- 6:41And we can talk about all the nostalgia when I programmed it in the app.
- 6:45I didn't use any of the workouts from vacation mode, which was like super, super fun.
- 6:49Those were like really OG ones in there too.
- 6:52But when I was programming, I have the workout and then I did my best to find out like what year it was.
- 6:59I had like deep dive, deep search way back in the interweb a decade ago or so.
- 7:04So you can see the year.
- 7:05So I really want to like reminisce with you.
- 7:07Like, what were we doing in 2016?
- 7:11What was I wearing at that workout?
- 7:13Was it low rise flare pants?
- 7:15Was it a Mahi bikini top?
- 7:17Was it avocado?
- 7:18I don't know.
- 7:18I just, I've had fun like going through all the workouts on the app and choosing this programming.
- 7:23So I think you're going to have a lot of fun.
- 7:25I think you're going to
- 7:27I know you're going to feel good and get stronger and be ready.
- 7:32Be ready for January because that's just the next step because you are always ready.
- 7:37That's my spiel on that part.
- 7:39I haven't even picked up my notes here.
- 7:41So...
- 7:43The other thing is, let's go talking about friendships.
- 7:45So we know we have the Tone It Up community.
- 7:47If you don't know what to do, again, it's hashtag TIU team.
- 7:52You can go hashtag TIU Austin, hashtag TIU Chicago.
- 7:55You can find your city within there.
- 7:56So I really encourage anyone just for this fall challenge, let's do it for three weeks, like having that reconnection, thinking about like, how can I be there for a girl or a woman who maybe needs someone, reach out to someone.
- 8:11So here's a few little things too.
- 8:13Obviously, meeting people now and friendships.
- 8:16There's a lot of fitness communities, wellness communities, like Tone It Up at the Tone It Up community.
- 8:21But also going to yoga studios, Pilates studios.
- 8:24There's run clubs in your neighborhood.
- 8:26I've actually gotten really confident lately where I get invited to...
- 8:32a party, a birthday party or something.
- 8:34And I'm going by myself, which in the OG toned up days, girls came by themselves everywhere.
- 8:40And I'm a shy person, but I have gotten over that shyness and I go and I'm just putting myself out there to meet people in real life.
- 8:48And some other things, too, is, you know, I encourage you maybe once a week do something like have a walking date with a girlfriend, a coffee date, like really put yourself out there.
- 9:00Find out if there's like a comedy club or maybe there's a concert in town and you buy two tickets.
- 9:07You don't know who's going to go with you.
- 9:09You got two tickets.
- 9:11And I have a friend who actually does this.
- 9:13She's like, I got two tickets to this concert.
- 9:14Who wants to go with me?
- 9:15And she puts on Instagram and she always has a new friend coming with her.
- 9:19So there's really fun ways to meet people.
- 9:22And I think it's, you know, friendships, especially as we get older in this loneliness epidemic that we are still in.
- 9:29Really, you really have to put yourself out there to be social and get together.
- 9:34And, you know, and myself and a lot of other female entrepreneurs that I'm friends with, if we're not at a work event, we're working.
- 9:44So it's also finding that balance of how to separate people.
- 9:49work from actual just life, you know, life, life, life.
- 9:57All right.
- 9:58I am bypassing all of my notes here.
- 10:02So voice notes.
- 10:04Okay.
- 10:04I love leaving voice notes.
- 10:06For some reason, it sounds, it's just more personal than a voicemail.
- 10:10So sometimes you want to reach out to somebody and you don't necessarily need them to pick up the phone, but just send a voice note and say, Hey, I'm thinking about you.
- 10:19I hope you're having a beautiful day.
- 10:23Just something really kind and encouraging.
- 10:25When I get those, it really like perks me up.
- 10:28So I definitely highly suggest voice notes.
- 10:32I like this text a new friend every Sunday.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:35And then the walk and talks, you know, it's a great way.
- 10:38I love like if I've just met somebody and you want to get together, I love doing a walk and talk because you're getting your workout in, you get your steps in and the endorphins are going and it's, it's just like a lot easier to like break the ice and get to know someone.
- 10:52All right.
- 10:53So next, let me see here.
- 10:54I want to.
- 10:56Okay.
- 10:58play some messages.
- 11:00I have speak pipe here.
- 11:02So you can go to Karina Dawn.com slash message.
- 11:06You can leave me a voicemail.
- 11:07It can be anonymous.
- 11:09And then I play them on air when I do little solo apps.
- 11:12So I'm going to randomly choose two that were left.
- 11:16I'll do more recent ones that were left in the past week.
- 11:21Hi, Karina.
- 11:21This is Allie.
- 11:23I'm used to Palm Springs, California.
- 11:26Love what you're doing.
- 11:27Thank you.
- 11:28I was wondering, who are some of your favorite creators right now on social media?
- 11:33Okay.
- 11:35Bye.
- 11:35Bye.
- 11:37Creators.
- 11:38Okay.
- 11:38I'm not, I don't really like...
- 11:40Think of myself as like, I don't really follow creators a lot.
- 11:45I mean, I scroll.
- 11:47Let me think like top of mind, like who makes me laugh, right?
- 11:50Like that's what I like.
- 11:52Valeria.
- 11:53Well, hold on.
- 11:54I don't know her.
- 11:54I'm going to say it wrong.
- 11:55Let me look it up.
- 11:56Valeria Lipovsky.
- 11:59Valeria Lipovsky.
- 12:01Okay.
- 12:01She's so funny.
- 12:03Her and her husband.
- 12:04Go follow her.
- 12:05She's just quirky and lighthearted.
- 12:08And then the other one is this woman, Jordan.
- 12:11She's a comedian and I love her standup.
- 12:13Jordan Jensen is a comedian, a creator.
- 12:16Yeah.
- 12:17Right.
- 12:17That's the creator.
- 12:17Yeah.
- 12:18But yeah, that's that.
- 12:21Thanks, Allie.
- 12:22I don't know.
- 12:22Why don't you DM me out there?
- 12:25Like what creators should I be following?
- 12:27Should they come on Tone It Down?
- 12:30Actually, you can message or email toneitdown at toneitup for a few things, suggestions on who you want on the podcast.
- 12:40If you want to come on for a community conversation and share your story, you can email me there.
- 12:46And then I want to know what creators I should be following because clearly I don't know enough.
- 12:51You can also DM me personally at Karina Dawn.
- 12:55Okay, one more.
- 12:56We're going to go with anonymous.
- 12:59That's always scary.
- 13:01Hi, Karina.
- 13:02Loving the refresh, all the new content, and the new path forward with you at the helm.
- 13:11And I'm curious as Tone It Up goes through this refresh, rebrand,
- 13:17and expansion, will you be looking for new talent?
- 13:22Will Tone It Up ever be open to hiring remote talent in the U?
- 13:28And is Tone It Up ever open to collaborations with other wellness coaches in all different modalities, including self-care, self-love, and more?
- 13:42I love that.
- 13:43Number one, thank you.
- 13:46We are currently slowly moving through a tiny little mini brand refresh just to like freshen it up a bit.
- 13:53Nothing drastic, trust me.
- 13:56But yeah, I guess it's just bringing back what you're seeing now is just me getting back into being able to be creative director again.
- 14:05And yeah,
- 14:06making decisions on my own, which is also very scary, by the way, big decisions.
- 14:11And I'm, you know, the sole owner.
- 14:13And I'm like, what if I mess up?
- 14:15What if I do this?
- 14:16Don't do it.
- 14:16Stop.
- 14:16You just I try to talk.
- 14:18I try to talk myself out of so many different things.
- 14:21But I, I usually just push through it, do it and close my eyes and
- 14:28And we're here.
- 14:29I'm really proud of everything that has happened in less than a year.
- 14:35What is it?
- 14:36Maybe nine months and everything.
- 14:39I mean, I could, if you want, let me know if you want me to do a whole podcast on what the process has been from my perspective of the business side over the past few years and all these different transitions.
- 14:49I'm happy to talk about it.
- 14:50Podcasts dedicated to that if you want me to.
- 14:53But back to your question for anonymous talent.
- 14:55Yeah.
- 14:56So after
- 14:58You know, we had the Tone It Up office in Manhattan Beach.
- 15:01And then eventually we just, everyone became remote and we stopped using the office.
- 15:06So we haven't had an office space.
- 15:07And I totally, I miss that.
- 15:09So currently everybody at Tone It Up is remote.
- 15:12I just hired someone locally here in Austin.
- 15:16And that is my goal is to be back in person.
- 15:20So I did post a listing on LinkedIn on my personal profile.
- 15:26Yeah.
- 15:26There's an email address on there.
- 15:29You can see what it's for and you can email there or you can email hello at tonedup.com as well.
- 15:35But if you wanna see the listing, go to my LinkedIn.
- 15:38Did I answer that?
- 15:38And yeah, other trainers, yes, I'm always looking.
- 15:42I have always had my eyes peeled.
- 15:45So yes, the answer is yes.
- 15:47I'm yes to everything.
- 15:49All right, what else?
- 15:51I feel like this has been a good catch up.
- 15:54I hope you are doing amazing.
- 15:56Again, email me, DM me topics, people you want on the podcast.
- 16:02If you want to be a part of the podcast and share your community conversation with me.
- 16:06And if you're going to be in Austin, Texas, and you want to sit right here, even better, I'm trying to do all of the Tone It Down podcasts.
- 16:14In person.
- 16:16That's it.
- 16:17Next week, we are launching the signups for the fall challenge.
- 16:21And seriously, I am really excited about this one.
- 16:24So please join me.
- 16:27We're going to have fun.
- 16:27We're going to bring back those good memories, those good vibes.
- 16:30We're not going to wait till January to feel good.
- 16:33We're going to feel good all of the time because you're worth it.
- 16:36We're worth it.
- 16:38I'm so happy you're here.
- 16:40And share this episode with someone who wants to hang out with us and needs to hear it.
- 16:45And make sure you leave a review however you listen to these podcasts.
- 16:49All right.
- 16:49I love you.
- 16:50See you at the mat.
