- 0:32Welcome to this week's episode of Anime Club here Day old art
- 0:38classroom every week to talk about anime that we love and
- 0:41some anime that we're watching for the first time.
- 0:43And this week it's the first time for the both of us diving
- 0:47into an absolute classic. Before we get to that, I'd love
- 0:51to introduce my beautiful Co host, Christophery.
- 1:00How you doing buddy? Not bad, not bad yourself.
- 1:03No. Yeah.
- 1:04Good. Thank you.
- 1:07This week we're doing Ronnie Kenshin.
- 1:09It is an anime from the 90s. From 1996 was when this was
- 1:15first aired. Correct.
- 1:18It's from the 90s, as are we. So I thought we could start by
- 1:22playing a game. All right, so before we started
- 1:26this, Phoebe, we should say this is like 2 minutes to 8 just
- 1:31said, right, we're playing the game and you need to hold your
- 1:33hands up to prove that you're not cheating.
- 1:35So I'd like to have no idea what this.
- 1:37Is I don't want you to Google So what I'm getting people in the
- 1:42chat can play along as well. Obviously we're going to have to
- 1:44operate in on a system for the chat because we won't know if
- 1:49they're right, but So what this game is, is how well do you
- 1:55remember the 90s? And we're going to do 90s number
- 1:59ones, Chris, so. Because I was singing dance
- 2:04music to you before. Yeah, big girl.
- 2:09So I have got a full list of all the number ones that happened in
- 2:16in during 1996. I want you to name one song and
- 2:23you can get a bonus point if you can guess the number of weeks
- 2:27that it stayed top of the charts for.
- 2:32So you get like and it can be any song from that period.
- 2:35Just give me a song title. 96 or I was 96.
- 2:41What do you think was #1 when you were 6?
- 2:44I'm going to go Spice Girls. OK, which one?
- 2:48And what's it called that spicy your life or something?
- 2:54I will give you half a .0. No, hang on.
- 2:58No, I'm going to give you half a point because the Spice Girls,
- 3:02there are three Spice Girls songs that were number one in in
- 3:081990. Three, tell me what you want.
- 3:11None of them none of them are spice of your life.
- 3:15What wannabe? Yeah.
- 3:19OK, so and for the bonus point, Christopher, did you did you see
- 3:23that in the chat pop up? I.
- 3:26Don't know what you're talking about.
- 3:27Yeah, yeah. My hands are up here.
- 3:30For the bonus point, how many weeks do you think Wannabe was
- 3:34at top of the charts for? Seven.
- 3:38Weeks. Did you actually?
- 3:42That's exactly right. Seriously.
- 3:48So Wannabe 21st of July 1996 was when it hit the top of the
- 3:52charts and it was at the top of the charts for seven weeks and
- 3:55actually for that year was the longest reigning #1 so if you
- 4:00were going to pick any of the number ones, that is the number
- 4:03one to pick from 1996. Yeah, I knew that definitely
- 4:06wasn't a fluke. Yeah, me, other me, other guests
- 4:11would have been something like, I don't know, Robbie Williams
- 4:13Angels or something. Oh, I think, see, I think that
- 4:17would have been a bit later because I think in 1996 take
- 4:20that was still a thing. Right.
- 4:23I don't know. When did when did Robbie leave?
- 4:25Take that. Do you know what else was at for
- 4:29one week? Do you know what knocked Wannabe
- 4:31off the top of the charts? Wannabe a maker?
- 4:36No Peter Andre's flavour. Pre Insania I didn't know Peter
- 4:45Andre so but. Also, I was like, like Spice
- 4:50Girls could remember every single word to want to be, could
- 4:53not for the life of you tell you a single lyric from Peter
- 4:57Andre's flavour. But that is what knocked them
- 4:59off at the Top of the Pops. He was there for one week before
- 5:02it went into Breakfast at Tiffany's and I said, what about
- 5:08Breakfast at Tiffany's? It's actually very nice.
- 5:12Song. It's such a 90s song.
- 5:19So yeah, we're we're in the 90s. What snacks are you bringing
- 5:22back to the 90s today, Chris? Oh well, I've got a food item
- 5:27and a drink item, none of which will probably be available in
- 5:31the 90s. And so lovely Molly went to the
- 5:35shop because definitely didn't forget to bring snacks and it's
- 5:40got me Japanese style mix rice snacks.
- 5:45Yummy. Think there might be sound nicer
- 5:49than the taste, but we'll see. And then.
- 5:52And then I've got a little Hulk drink that I got from the local
- 5:55sweetie shop that has paid far too much for when you do.
- 6:01This, but it's going to make you feel like the Hulk.
- 6:04Little tornado, little. Power off that looks so bad.
- 6:13I love that I've this week I've gone fancy again but fancy
- 6:20because it's been provided by my mother and she has grown these
- 6:23herself, which is like fresh figs that she has picked off a
- 6:27tree today at her allotment. So I'm just having some fresh
- 6:31figs and then if which I, I will obviously eat all of those
- 6:37because they're delicious. I've also got myself a Terry's
- 6:39chocolate orange because, you know, we're eating fruit.
- 6:41Oh. Yeah, are you going to, are you
- 6:46going to demonstrate how to open a property?
- 6:48Yeah, smash it against the floor.
- 6:51Yeah, if you ever, if you ever like, try to hit one on on your
- 6:54head. No.
- 6:57No, he knocked to be self out so many times doing that.
- 7:00Yeah, I can see. I can see why that might be a
- 7:04thing. So this week, and I've totally
- 7:10not been delaying announced like obviously everyone can see on
- 7:14the screen what we're doing this week.
- 7:15But also, I've had, like, genuine fear about pronouncing
- 7:20the divide of this week's anime. Rorony Kenshin.
- 7:26That's the anime that we're doing.
- 7:29What would you say this anime's about, mate?
- 7:31Well. It's one of the first shown in
- 7:35animes that I know of. I mean, obviously there's like
- 7:39Astro Boyd stuff, which is the father, but it's one of the
- 7:43first that I'm aware of. It's basically follows Kenshin
- 7:47who's a wondering assassin or samurai who's trying to live a
- 7:51peaceful life. And I genuinely have only seen
- 7:55the first 3 episodes so I don't know that much of the story.
- 8:00I know that he's a bloke that has a past where he was like an
- 8:05assassin and he refuses to kill now.
- 8:08And he meets a lass called Cam Kamiya Koru, who's a young Dojo
- 8:15owner who's inherited from a father.
- 8:20And basically the first 3 episodes are gathering a bunch
- 8:24of friends. It's kind of like a direction.
- 8:28Yeah, it's, it's one of them where every episode sent us on a
- 8:32new person. Well, at least the first three.
- 8:35They joined the party and somehow lodge in this Dojo.
- 8:39And I'm assuming hijinks are going to happen.
- 8:42A more plot development that's like every other shown in anime.
- 8:46But yeah. But this is where it kind of, I
- 8:50don't think it, I don't know if you could say it's where it
- 8:51started, but it's like along with animes like Trigun, this is
- 8:57one of the like I would say this is like one of the touchstones
- 9:02for certain types of types of characters and certain types of
- 9:06anime. So you have like the very like
- 9:11the main character Kenshin. It's like very chilled out,
- 9:15slightly comical character, but then when he gets serious he's
- 9:19like incredibly, insanely powerful and he has a dark past
- 9:22but a good heart. Yeah.
- 9:25Yeah, and he just, you know, wants people around him to be
- 9:29safe and to protect. And then you also have like the
- 9:32beautiful temple maiden with a temper.
- 9:36Yeah, yeah. The plucky St.
- 9:39Urchin with a with a strong sense of pride and the ability
- 9:46to learn. Yeah, but also he's the bottom
- 9:49of the barrel, but with a noble heart.
- 9:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. All he needs is just like one
- 9:54good role model to set him straight.
- 9:57Yeah. Oh, what's your Hulk drink like?
- 9:59I've opened it, yeah. I'm, I'm scared that I'm shaking
- 10:02it. Open my fizz.
- 10:04Yeah, that's what I oh, you're all right.
- 10:09What's it smell like? TSA chemicals up.
- 10:17Nice. Yeah, it's it's lemonade.
- 10:23Lemonade with other chemicals. Lemonade, green lemonade.
- 10:34I feel like you you have better luck with snacks than you do
- 10:37with drinks on this on this podcast.
- 10:41You you definitely have you definitely have had some
- 10:45interesting drinks you. Just got a risk it sometimes.
- 10:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. For sure, for sure.
- 10:55So how would you like? What was your first impression
- 10:58of this of no of this anime? Completely attention.
- 11:06Completely pale on it. Then I was like, oh we could be
- 11:10here all night. Keep.
- 11:11Going kitchen, that's all I'm going to say.
- 11:14But yeah, when I first went in like you, you kind of because
- 11:18there is a newer version and we want to do the original because
- 11:21you watched the first episode of both of them and you said the
- 11:25characters are probably better in this one.
- 11:27But so going into it, I've looked at the screenshots of it
- 11:35and what it looked like and I thought this this is an old
- 11:37anime. Like even the style, the
- 11:39palette, the music, you can just tell.
- 11:43You had you did send me a very funny message when you when you
- 11:48were watching the first 3 episodes you were like, was this
- 11:53at a time where they just let anyone do karaoke as an anime
- 11:56theme song? Yeah, it is.
- 12:00And then I Googled it and then it's to say, Oh yes, with the
- 12:03with the beloved original opening, I was like, it just
- 12:07said because you said, Oh yeah, they got one of that.
- 12:09And I mean, I just do karaoke. No, I yeah, that was a joke.
- 12:13I don't think that's actually what happened.
- 12:15But it does sound like someone was in like the sound booth and
- 12:19they were like, right, we've, you know, we've got to get this
- 12:21out tomorrow. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, you know, it's the 90s, how
- 12:30could you compete with Wannabe? Exactly.
- 12:34Exactly. Yeah.
- 12:38Yeah. So sorry.
- 12:39Yeah. So that was your, like, colour
- 12:41palette. Classic anime.
- 12:43It takes us back to see I didn't watch anime in 96 because I was
- 12:496 year old. It was more 2000s onwards when I
- 12:52was about 10 and it took us back to a time when I was going on
- 12:55the family computer, going on dodgy streaming sites to watch
- 13:01and anime because where else am I going to watch it from?
- 13:04I can't stream. Last.
- 13:05Week. Yeah, yeah, maybe.
- 13:12Yeah. It's like Sunday morning gives
- 13:14you a lot like Member Berry, feeling warm and fuzzy.
- 13:19It did. And and even though I'd never
- 13:21seen it before, I had the same reaction of like, oh, this is
- 13:24nostalgia like. And there's even something like
- 13:27the, the colour palette really is so, so 90s.
- 13:32But there's a scene where she's like kneeling in the Dojo and
- 13:35just the way that the Dojo is like the background art is
- 13:38painted and the colours and everything.
- 13:40I was like, this just feels like Saturday morning cartoons.
- 13:44And also the episodes are like 20 minutes long.
- 13:47Do you remember when animes used to be like 20 minutes long?
- 13:51Yeah, it doesn't have like as far as I know in the first 3
- 13:55episodes it doesn't have recaps or like last time on Bruini
- 13:59Kenshin. I'm hoping the more I say it,
- 14:02the more it's easier. The more it looks less like
- 14:05you're really having an internal panic for any tension.
- 14:12Yeah. And also because I'm like, you
- 14:14know, comparing it to other old anime.
- 14:17You're right. There's no recaps.
- 14:18There's also no, there's no, like, repeated anime scenes,
- 14:23which, like, affect cartoons in animation in general at this
- 14:27time. Like people used to recycle a
- 14:30lot of like backgrounds and a lot of like, action sorts.
- 14:34Yeah, exactly like Sailor Moon. They, they have one extended
- 14:38version of the Sailor Moon transformation sequence that
- 14:41they just cut up into like different and like just reorder
- 14:45for like almost every and do you know what I mean?
- 14:47And there's none of that really like it.
- 14:50So there is also like a kind of quality thing if you're going
- 14:54back to watch nostalgic anime. I think this is probably a good
- 14:58example of high quality anime of the time that it is.
- 15:04Also, it is because it kind of establishes a bit of a genre.
- 15:08Some of it feels very trophy, but it's because they weren't
- 15:13tropes at the time, but have become tropes because of this
- 15:15anime. But that makes it, if you're
- 15:17watching it for the first time from 2025, that that sometimes I
- 15:22was a bit like, oh, yeah, OK, I know where this is going.
- 15:29Yeah. Yeah, even with the M with their
- 15:32kensions backwards sword in his refusal to kill people, he just
- 15:37beats them up. I was like, that is an amazing
- 15:39way to get get past watersheds, but in the kids.
- 15:44But besides that, it's it is kind of a trouble.
- 15:46It's like the the season to kill.
- 15:48It doesn't want to kill anymore. You see.
- 15:49Well, modern day stuff even like Sakamoto days and it's just like
- 15:55a a thing now. Yeah, Sakamoto Days, it's very
- 16:00Sacramento days. Although I must admit I like,
- 16:04you know, it's like apples to oranges.
- 16:06But in terms of that particular trope, Sacramento days have
- 16:10taken it and then built on it as well because they add the dad,
- 16:13dad bod element, which just makes it amazing.
- 16:17There's a way of subverting the genre a bit as well by just
- 16:21making him not that cool. Yeah, I mean, weirdly, I think I
- 16:26read some of my intentions based on a on a female model because
- 16:31if he he has got effeminate features and he's got like a
- 16:35very skinny, pale body. And the original voice.
- 16:40Did you watch any of the any of? So I watched it dub and sub
- 16:43because I was like, I'm just curious what the difference is
- 16:45The sub voice. So the original voice for
- 16:51Kenshin, he's he's very, I was like, I think that's a female
- 16:54voice actor. Like it's very sounds female.
- 16:58And I don't know if it is. I didn't look it up, but yeah.
- 17:01So that doesn't surprise me because it feels like that is
- 17:04the kind of they're pitching it in this kind of weirdly and not
- 17:07weirdly androgynous, but like ambiguous place, I would say.
- 17:12Long ginger hair. That's what makes it weird.
- 17:16Yeah, sorry. Shouldn't say like my son's
- 17:22ginger. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:24So are you a little bit mate? Just be skin.
- 17:31Very, very ginger skin. Really, if you're going to be a
- 17:36redhead, that's the worst bet I. Know it's I'm sure I'm getting a
- 17:40ton off this ring light at the minute.
- 17:45You don't tan, you just go straight to pink.
- 17:48True, true. So in terms of characters, did
- 17:53you have like a like? What were your thoughts?
- 17:55Did you have any that you particularly liked, particularly
- 17:57disliked? What was your Who dream win?
- 18:03So I don't think I was that bothered because I'm assuming
- 18:06that Kenshin and Kamiya the Dojo owner are going to have some
- 18:11sort of romance later on. But I kind of like the little
- 18:16the little tou rag Meojin, the the street urchin who
- 18:21pickpockets everyone. Yeah.
- 18:26Is it Meojin yahiko I've got written down?
- 18:33There's a leaps ellipses and there's some sort.
- 18:35There's some pronunciations over the O which I don't get.
- 18:39I can barely speak English, never mind Japanese.
- 18:43Yeah. But yeah, I like the current
- 18:46girl, has a bit of a shitty past and I can relate to him because
- 18:52I'm poor too. Because sometimes I think about
- 18:58joining your cues around you to have a crisis of conscience.
- 19:01Yeah, yeah, very relatable. So I was also laughing because
- 19:08Molly's, Molly's put in the chat.
- 19:10Chris has too many Gray hairs to see the ginger now.
- 19:13Do you know why? Because I've accidentally
- 19:15started using her blue shampoo. Yeah.
- 19:22OK. So you've taken all the brassy
- 19:24tones out and just left you like kind of silvered.
- 19:28Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:33Oh amazing. Yeah, I I also liked Yuhiko a
- 19:39lot. I thought he was a fun
- 19:41character. There's also from that when he's
- 19:44first introduced, so he comes in in episode 3.
- 19:49And. 2 episode 2, he comes in and he's a clearly a pickpocket
- 19:55and he pickpockets from like an old man who's there with his
- 19:58grandson and then the grandson like wants something and the old
- 20:01man's like oh I'll get it for you.
- 20:03And he obviously like has an immediate like, Oh no.
- 20:06So he like goes and gives back the thing that he's stolen.
- 20:09And so like or or immediately you're like, Oh no, poor little
- 20:14guy. Yeah.
- 20:16Like you just, they just set him up to be like poor little guy.
- 20:20Yeah, he's a pickpocket with a heart of gold.
- 20:24Yeah, he's an Artful Dodger sort.
- 20:28But I don't even think he is. He's it's weird because he talks
- 20:33because he's from a proud samurai lineage family thing.
- 20:38And and this is set in the Meiji area where swords were banned.
- 20:43There was a sword law. So you you had to have like a
- 20:45kind of the equivalent of a Meiji era license to carry a
- 20:48sword. So a lot of samurais fell on
- 20:52hard times as a result. Yeah.
- 20:56But so that's the sorry. I'll switch you a train of
- 21:00thought there. And so he's died with some sort
- 21:03of samurai fancy. Samurai.
- 21:06Fancy sword man. And so he's he's been drilled
- 21:10into one from a very young age, that proud family lineage and
- 21:13stuff like that. And he's fell on that hard
- 21:15times. He's had to resort to pickpock.
- 21:17And so he's kind of like, oh, I'm too good for this, but also
- 21:21I kind of need to nick this purse to eat today.
- 21:25Yeah. Thing going on.
- 21:29Yeah. And yeah.
- 21:30And you find out that he's kind of like in like massively in
- 21:33debt and stuff, but he's only a kid.
- 21:35So that so that can't be right. Like chainsaw, man.
- 21:39Like chainsaw? Man, yeah.
- 21:42But it's entirely testical though.
- 21:44Also red headed main character. Like bleach, Like Chainsaw Man.
- 21:51True, true. Full circle.
- 21:55Full circle and the so I also really liked your man in episode
- 22:033, the the soldier like general type guy who came comes in who
- 22:09at the end with the mustache. Is it like your Mata or you got
- 22:14like Yagata? The one with the mustache.
- 22:18Yeah, who like who's like No stop.
- 22:24I can see from the crowds reaction that just like which
- 22:27side of justice this man is on. And it's such like a dramatic,
- 22:30like it's such a dramatic way to like enter a scene.
- 22:36I was like, oh, I love this big old daddy with a moustache
- 22:40coming in to deliver to deliver poetry.
- 22:46And but it raised a weird point because that's when I was like,
- 22:51message you. And I was like, hang on a
- 22:52minute. So he's how old is this
- 22:54character supposed to be? Because that general has been
- 22:57tracking him down for 10 years from when he from when Kenshin
- 23:01was fighting in a war rebellion like in the rebellion.
- 23:09And in the. Rebellion.
- 23:10He's supposed to have been like the most feared, most skilled
- 23:13sword swordsman. So how did he become that?
- 23:17I think we worked it out. He must have been about 15-16 at
- 23:20the time of the rebellion because he's 28 at the time that
- 23:25this anime sort of is the present day for this anime.
- 23:28So he's been looking for over 10 years, which would make him 18.
- 23:31But he's the. Most.
- 23:32Feared, and that was at the end of the war.
- 23:35Yes, he's the most feared assassin, so he used to be like
- 23:3917/16/15. Yeah, so he must have been like,
- 23:44what's his deal? I have questions about Kenshin
- 23:47that I feel like the anime needs to answer.
- 23:50Like what was his deal? How did he start training?
- 23:52Did he do it from birth? Was his dad like or mum like a
- 23:56famous like Like what's the vibe?
- 23:59Yeah, and why does he not kill now?
- 24:02Because it's harder to fight someone with a sword and not
- 24:05kill them then kill them. Yeah, I feel like he could just,
- 24:08like, learn to punch people and that probably would be easier
- 24:11than not killing people with a sword.
- 24:13Yeah, because his main thing is he's got a, he's got a backward
- 24:17sword. Oh, big bunk.
- 24:23And he's got a backward sword. So the the blade is on the wrong
- 24:29is on the top and so the bottom. So when he swings, it swings it
- 24:32like he's busy. Hit them with a bit of metal
- 24:34which could kill them as well. It could, yeah.
- 24:37Yeah, for sure. So yeah, I don't want to watch
- 24:43your head because it's like a. 100.
- 24:45Fruit 20 or five a day. That.
- 24:48Isn't it the full 1 though. That going to have to eat the
- 24:53whole thing because you need to hit that target of five a day.
- 25:00Last time I ate a fruit lemonade lemons.
- 25:05I've got a fruitful of raspberries as well, fresh
- 25:07raspberries now as well and plums.
- 25:12Proper glut. I'll tell you what, my mum, her
- 25:15allotment she's, she grows some delicious things.
- 25:22I tried to draw, we tried to grow some strawberries.
- 25:24We had three plants that started flowering, started producing
- 25:27strawberries that just dies. I just forgot to water them.
- 25:32You do have to water them pretty much every day.
- 25:34Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:35Did you put straw around them? Straw.
- 25:39No, I put them inside them. Yeah, but you're then supposed
- 25:43to like like water them and put straw around them.
- 25:45That's why they're called strawberry berries and it helps
- 25:48lock the moisture into the soil because they're such like a
- 25:50water thirsty crop. No, I didn't do that.
- 25:55I just put them just I thought it was like a set them and
- 25:57forget them kind of kind of deal.
- 25:59Obviously it wasn't. No, no.
- 26:06Anyway, what would you so we both only watched the first 3
- 26:17episodes for for the first time in a long time, we've obeyed our
- 26:22we've actually followed the format of our podcast.
- 26:29What? What are you like?
- 26:32What would you hope for? Are there any questions that you
- 26:34have at this stage on episode 3 that you hope the anime answers?
- 26:40Yeah, 'cause I mean, the first couple episodes in and Shawn are
- 26:46introducing the world, introducing the characters and
- 26:49their bonds, and it feels like they haven't done that in three
- 26:55episodes. I mean they've introduced some
- 26:57characters and hinted at backgrounds but nothing like
- 27:01concrete is to say who was Keru the Dojo owner?
- 27:08Why did her dad did he die or whatever?
- 27:11Why she got the Dojo and why did she only have three members of a
- 27:15Dojo? Who left Kenshin?
- 27:18Why did he was an assassin? Why did he stop doing that?
- 27:21And again, the question is before like, how did he grow up?
- 27:25He must have been really young when he was the top assassin in
- 27:28this rebellion. And the little the little kid, I
- 27:33think his story was pretty much done, but I don't know what's he
- 27:36what's he been doing? He just he just worked for the
- 27:40who's that? So he wasn't as bad in the.
- 27:42Grand as well. Is he going to be like strong?
- 27:45Is he going to, you know, one day grow to be a strong
- 27:51swordsman? Also who's this?
- 27:54Who's this guy here and the the Street Fighter guy with the
- 27:59headband on? So after who's don't know?
- 28:03Yeah, so I think we should make a prediction of who we think
- 28:07this guy is because I deliberately didn't look it up
- 28:12because I was like, I might actually carry on watching this.
- 28:14So, you know, I want it to be part of the story for me.
- 28:19I think he's brash. I think he's brash.
- 28:25I think he comes in and clashes with Kenshin and they have like
- 28:30a risk, like a semi respectful rivalry that develops between
- 28:34the two of them. And I think he has an unrequited
- 28:37thing for what's her face for the Dojo owner for Kairu.
- 28:46That I. Predicted for who that guy is
- 28:49and I also reckon if you search the Internet there's loads of
- 28:52pictures of him and Ken Ching kissing.
- 28:55Probably be more than kissing. So many, yeah.
- 29:00Cracker, did I tell you? Did I tell you I accidentally
- 29:02did that with Dander Dan? You did, Yeah.
- 29:06Yeah. But tell the audience at home.
- 29:08Oh yeah, So there was a guy I talked to on Instagram called
- 29:11Pollock Express. He does screeners of anime films
- 29:15like classic ones. And gorgeous promotional posters
- 29:18and stuff they do for the screeners as well.
- 29:20Really like I loved the Metropolis one that they did.
- 29:23Yeah, so he he was talking about an art collaborative book that
- 29:28he made with a bunch of local artists.
- 29:31It's it's amazing. I'll probably post it.
- 29:34But anyway, yeah, he he sent me a thing for Perfect Blue, which
- 29:38was kind of like promo cards and I'll try not to show the one
- 29:44with the boobies on. I do want to do the perfect blue
- 29:48one here at some point as well, because when we use when you
- 29:51it's a. Satoshi Code and it's what he's
- 29:53known for and we've done these other films as well, but it's
- 29:57like the odd cards, which I think are amazing things to have
- 30:00and I love them. So I was just like, I wonder if
- 30:03there's any more for different animes.
- 30:06And so then I was like, well, I really like that to dance, so
- 30:10I'll have a look at that. Don't look at that.
- 30:12There's just filth, filth. So yeah, there'll be loads of
- 30:21Rule 34 stuff. You're probably better off going
- 30:27to like an Etsy and searching there.
- 30:30It's probably safer. Yeah, I'd just like to have nice
- 30:33things around us. No, your little, your little
- 30:36podcasting space is so cute. I love it.
- 30:39I also love you. Yeah.
- 30:41You've also got, like, more things on your shelf this week
- 30:44as well. Yeah.
- 30:47I've been shopping there was a nice little local shop.
- 30:51Someone got paid, so yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:03Yeah, I'll just, I want, I just want to add to it, make it
- 31:06bigger. But yeah, sorry, what was I
- 31:09talking about? Stronger who we think this guy
- 31:12is. Who do you think that?
- 31:13Guy is, so I think he's going to be a wanderer.
- 31:16Who's heard of the Who's heard of the the legendary assassin?
- 31:23Kenshin tries to challenge him to prove his might.
- 31:27Kenshin smacks his little bum and then he's just like, I'm so
- 31:32broody and Moody, I need to defeat you.
- 31:34And he's just come join the Dojo instead.
- 31:37And he he tries to become, he's like apprentice.
- 31:42So he's kind of the hot headed one.
- 31:45That's what I think based on shonen rules and what he looks
- 31:50like. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:52I think that's a good shout to be fair.
- 31:55I haven't looked at this. I didn't I write these calls Ken
- 31:59or Ryu. I don't think he can be called
- 32:04Ken because then it'd be Ken versus Kenshin.
- 32:08So I think he's probably called like, yeah, Ryu or or Suba.
- 32:17I've just realized as well Paul's been trying to send the
- 32:20beast the boaters in the M in the chat and he's an auto modded
- 32:25right now because he's. Not on the page.
- 32:33It's true. He's also saying that soon
- 32:34you're going to have a room like his.
- 32:38No, because I'll put me shelves. Up properly, that's exactly what
- 32:43I thought you were going to say. Paul uses no more nails and
- 32:47Velcro to put up his shelves. Whereas Chris is a real man.
- 32:52He uses a hammer and a prayer. Tell me, did you use a stunt
- 32:58Finder where you put up those shelves?
- 33:00No, it kept going off every time I held it up near us.
- 33:03Yeah, sounds like the classic like stunt Finder.
- 33:07Oh no, baby babe. It's, it's just depressing when
- 33:11it doesn't go off and you just like, oh.
- 33:17My own tools. Betrayed us.
- 33:20Yeah, yeah, yeah. So how do you feel like?
- 33:23So you're right. Like we we talked a bit about
- 33:25the fact that this has had a remake.
- 33:26It's also got live action versions.
- 33:29I've noticed that, yeah. Which I was like, I can actually
- 33:34see this working really well as a live action and I would be up
- 33:41for watching that at some point. Yeah, because it's, it's kind of
- 33:44like it's a bastardized version of history, isn't it really?
- 33:49Yeah. There's no like crazy powers
- 33:51that I've seen yet. There's no ghosts, no freaky
- 33:55things. So it could, but it could work
- 33:57out. I think it could.
- 33:59And it's like basically like a period drama set in like a
- 34:01little town, isn't it? So like, that would be great to
- 34:04shoot. It's Japanese, don't Nabi.
- 34:10That's what it is. It's Samurai Pride and
- 34:14Prejudice. Did you like it?
- 34:21Yeah, I did. Actually.
- 34:22I enjoyed it when I watched because I watched one episode of
- 34:26the old one, one episode of the new one to try and decide which
- 34:30which I wanted to watch. And I actually found the new
- 34:34episode, the characters felt more stereotypically old
- 34:38fashioned. So like, the girl was a bit like
- 34:41wet, like she seemed she didn't seem as strong in the newer
- 34:47version. And also Kenshin was kind of
- 34:51like to check like annoyingly artificially chill and like pet
- 35:00saying the same thing over and over again.
- 35:02And I was like, this seems like a man who's had a breakdown.
- 35:06Maybe that's part of it, but I was like, and the animation was
- 35:12OK, but I still thought the old animation was good enough that I
- 35:15was like, I could easily watch the old one.
- 35:18And I think I'm going to prefer the characters in the original.
- 35:21You're really not enjoying that. You know you don't have to
- 35:24finish the things that you you open if you don't like them.
- 35:29It's it's a thing. I have to.
- 35:33You have to finish what's on your plate or you won't get
- 35:36dessert. Yeah, to be fair, I'll not eat
- 35:41all of these rice snacks. They're a bit.
- 35:44What? Are they not good?
- 35:47Are they like wasabi? No, not.
- 35:51They're very plain. Oh, that's always a bit
- 35:54disappointing. Do you think it held up with
- 36:032025 eyes? Yeah, because for for anime that
- 36:09came out in 96, there was very little sexism in this.
- 36:14I was surprised at that. Right, and also there's one bit
- 36:19where he walks in on her while she's in the bath and I was
- 36:23like, oh, OK, here we go 90s anime.
- 36:27But immediately she's like smack down.
- 36:30Anytime it gets a little bit sexy, she's like, no and just
- 36:35like smacking him. To be fair, it was weird that
- 36:40that he went into that bathroom because he was he was stalking
- 36:43the fire underneath that bath. That's how they kept it warm.
- 36:46And then she made it. She just made a normal bath
- 36:49noise. And then he was like, what's
- 36:51happening? And she put a head under the
- 36:53water to get washed and stuff. So she didn't reply because she
- 36:57came in here. So he runs in.
- 36:58It's like, what's going to happen?
- 37:00She's in that bath. I also feel like he did wait
- 37:04outside the door to like if I was going to run in on someone
- 37:07having a bath because I was like would I run in on someone having
- 37:10a bath if they were drowning was my thought.
- 37:12And I was like if I thought they were in trouble I probably
- 37:15would. I probably would also wait
- 37:18outside the door much longer than he.
- 37:22Yeah. He was very quick to run into
- 37:26the bath, but that was as sexy as it got in three episodes.
- 37:29It was probably less than a minute of like a little bit sexy
- 37:34and also all with adults. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:38I didn't. I didn't.
- 37:39Check her age. I'm assuming that's that's fair.
- 37:43I'm assuming she's an adult. I'm assuming slash hoping, yeah,
- 37:55But no, I think it did. And I do think she's a good
- 37:58character. She seems well-rounded.
- 38:00She's not like she got a little bit helpless in the Yakuza
- 38:05scene, but to be fair, she's also massively outnumbered, so
- 38:09you can kind of forgive that. Yeah, I I didn't see that as
- 38:12like a a typical damsel in distress because basically what
- 38:16she did is the little kid, she found out that he he owed the
- 38:19IGUSA debt and that's why he was pickpocketing for them and is
- 38:23obviously indebted for life because he's not going to,
- 38:26they're not going to say, Oh yeah, you've paid what off?
- 38:29Don't worry. He's just constantly going to
- 38:31add up this bill. So she basically kicks off,
- 38:34she's like, this isn't right. Storms into the IGUSA place and
- 38:39there's like 5 or 6 men in this hall who are bigger than her.
- 38:45She stands. On the types, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:50Ruffians, vagabonds and that. And then she starts, yeah, she
- 38:57starts a fight with them pretty much.
- 38:59And then she quickly gets outnumbered.
- 39:01And I didn't see it as a damsel in dress because a normal person
- 39:05would have been like, if it was a man, it would have been the
- 39:09same or like a normal man. Not Kenshin.
- 39:12He would have chinned the ball. But he did.
- 39:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:16Even even the kids, he kind of takes one of them out by kicking
- 39:20them in the balls and that's about it.
- 39:24Yeah, and you also see later in like you see armed police
- 39:29officers, but like for like falling for like like similar
- 39:34kind of like like. So she's not the only one who is
- 39:36out like outnumbered at time. Do you know what I mean?
- 39:40So you're right. I don't think it is like a
- 39:42damsel in distress moment particularly.
- 39:46I guess I would just expect the main like the owner of a Dojo,
- 39:51but more of a fight. But we also don't yet know the
- 39:56circumstances by which she became the owner, so.
- 40:00Nipple baby, I think. I think so too.
- 40:07So yeah. So would ultimate question would
- 40:14will you be watching past the first 3 episodes?
- 40:16So. Sorry, I was chewing.
- 40:21Yeah, when I saw this. I'm sure there's like 196
- 40:25episodes of this, something like that.
- 40:29And there's a couple of films, and there's the new series I
- 40:34probably will watch ahead, but not anytime.
- 40:38Soon, and not to finish. Not not to finish, I'll I'll
- 40:42watch it every curiosity, but I don't think I'll continue on
- 40:46only because I think it's a lot of tropes and storylines are
- 40:52probably based on this. I'm not saying that it's bad,
- 40:56I'm just saying I think going in 2025, I don't think it'll hold
- 41:01up to watching it as much as if you were watching it in 1996.
- 41:06Yeah. And I think without a nostalgia
- 41:09factor of having watched it in 1996, it's like that that kind
- 41:18of changes how you view stuff as well as you're like left quite
- 41:21excited and things. I'm the same.
- 41:24I think I will watch ahead. For me, this feels like Sunday
- 41:27morning cartoon like like maybe a little bit hungover.
- 41:30I need AI need like a couple of hours of like just like quick 20
- 41:34minute episodes to while I remember what it is to be human
- 41:39and sober I. Keep watching things all over.
- 41:46I would have it as a do you know if you want that, if you want
- 41:50that nostalgic anime, if you like you want a bit grainy, if
- 41:55the dubs a bit crap. I've never seen the dub but I
- 41:58can imagine it not being as good as 2025 dubs because the VAS
- 42:02went as. It wasn't they were less
- 42:06respect. Yeah, it's less.
- 42:09That's good. And also like the localization
- 42:12in general was, was just very different and censorship laws
- 42:15and things like that. And like, depending on like how
- 42:20they landed in either the UK or America, that really changed on
- 42:24like how much support they had as to what the Dubs were like.
- 42:28I, I noticed a lot in the subtitles as well and they did a
- 42:32lot of literal translations for grammar as well.
- 42:36So but like, but like take this, you will kind of think if you've
- 42:42given someone as it'll just be a little bit backwards like that.
- 42:46But I used to kind of be used to that from fan Subs back in the
- 42:50day. Oh my God, fan Subs.
- 42:54Yeah, that's nostalgia right there.
- 42:58Yeah. I just remember I used to have
- 43:01the subtitles on the bottom. And then if it was further
- 43:03context needed, you would have like a paragraph on the top of
- 43:06the screen that sometimes covered the whole screen.
- 43:08But it was like this man's nose is bleeding because in Japan, in
- 43:12Japan, like if you are aroused, a classic thing is your nose
- 43:16starts to bleed. Do you remember, I don't know if
- 43:19you ever read manga online as like a teenager, but like
- 43:23Scanlations, where you had like people like just fans who for
- 43:28manga that wasn't going to be published in like the UK or the
- 43:30States, they would like to translate it for you.
- 43:34Right. And you'd get like really dodgy
- 43:38translation and people kicking off Eddie, People kicking off
- 43:43about who, about what things meant back in like the early
- 43:50days of like whatever, you know, 1990 was, was Reddit around
- 43:55then? Probably not.
- 43:56It was probably like a forum thing.
- 43:58Yeah, yeah, probably. I don't.
- 44:01I've never seen that because I didn't get in the manga a lot
- 44:06later. Like I've got all the, I think
- 44:08my first manga was Battle Royale Jeff.
- 44:12I've still got like 6 volumes of it only because I like went into
- 44:16a massive deep dive of the film when that came out in 2000.
- 44:20So like I watch the film, I've read the book and I was like,
- 44:23oh, there's a Bangor of it. I'll hit a water stones and then
- 44:27bought 6 volumes a lot. Yeah I am.
- 44:32I'm currently reading a lot of Kaiju #8 and I'm I've already
- 44:37started watching season 2 and I love it.
- 44:41I'm in my I'm in my Kaiju era. This.
- 44:45This is why you haven't watched the Head, isn't it?
- 44:49Of this. Yeah, because I want, I almost
- 44:54resented this podcast because I was like, it's stopping me from
- 44:57being able to watch the anime. I really want to watch Kaiju #8
- 45:04but obviously I didn't. I obviously I didn't.
- 45:07And I love, I love. I actually did enjoy watching it
- 45:09once I got started, but I was a bit like, oh, but I've got my
- 45:12new night. Like literally the first thing I
- 45:14did on payday was to be like, order volume #7 they're all
- 45:22sitting in my, they're all sitting in my anime cart and
- 45:24I've forced myself to not buy more than one volume a month
- 45:28because I can't afford to go broke because of manga again.
- 45:32Yeah, see those days are. Lonely.
- 45:35Do you know the big books? The big Berserk books, The
- 45:37black? Not the leather ones, but the
- 45:40leather effect ones. The big hardback ones with the
- 45:43red on the front. I really want to buy them but
- 45:45they're like £40 each and I'm like I can do 11A payday
- 45:49maybe's. Yeah, so worth it though, but
- 45:54one a payday feels reasonable. I also dug out and I was kicking
- 45:57myself and not showing it on the Princess Mononoke episode, but I
- 46:01dug this out which is the Mononoke art book.
- 46:06Nice. Which is really gorgeous.
- 46:11Which I bought when I was a teenager.
- 46:13I've had this book for ages and nerd nerd.
- 46:22Would would you recommend this to someone to if if a friend who
- 46:26was I've I've never seen Annabelle before I've seen this
- 46:31Ravoni Kenshin. Yeah.
- 46:34Should I watch it? I would I would recommend it to
- 46:37them. And also because here's the
- 46:38other thing, I do think the animation is high quality
- 46:41animation. And then and a way, another way
- 46:43you can tell as well as no repeated scenes is all of the
- 46:48characters have a distinct design, even just like one shot
- 46:53NPCS, like even the police officers, you could distinguish
- 46:57each police officer when they were in their uniforms.
- 47:01All the Yakuza, you could distinguish each Yakuza.
- 47:04And I think that's another marker of like quality anime of
- 47:08this era. So I would I would also say if
- 47:12you really like that, give Sakamoto days ago.
- 47:17That would be my and that would be the one where I'm like, you
- 47:20really need to watch that anime. If you like, if you like the
- 47:23vibes of Ruin and Kenshi Kenshin, then give Sakamoto days
- 47:28ago, because that is this, but funny, like really, really
- 47:35funny. And they and it's also just, you
- 47:39know, just that little bit further forward it it
- 47:42acknowledges the tropes, but it also subverts them.
- 47:45So it kind of feels less like stayed.
- 47:50And I do think it is unfair to say this is a trope filled anime
- 47:55because I don't think all the tropes were really as
- 47:57established at the time. And it's like saying, Oh,
- 48:00Raymond Chandler is is so like film noir tropes.
- 48:04You know, it's full of like phrases.
- 48:06Like she walked into the room and I could hear saxophone
- 48:08saxophones playing as her legs flashed in the broken glass of
- 48:14the window. It's like that.
- 48:15Like, you know, smoke surrounded us like the fog on a on Seattle
- 48:20Bay. It's like, it's full of phrases
- 48:22like that. And you think, oh, this is
- 48:23really cliche, but Raymond Chandler is the one who
- 48:26establishes the cliche. So you kind of have to nod at it
- 48:30for that reason, and I don't. Yeah, but it.
- 48:34But at the same time, we're watching it in 2025.
- 48:37And it's not really Kenshin's fault that it, like so many
- 48:41other animes, have done what it did.
- 48:44Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:47What about you? Would you recommend it?
- 48:52No. So I'm going to see the reason
- 48:54why I'm not seeing it. I'm not seeing it's a bad anime
- 48:57because I have only watched 3 episodes so my 3 episode rule is
- 49:03to judge whether I would watch it on.
- 49:05Not to say if this anime is it's 100 and episodes.
- 49:10You can't say it's good or bad by the 1st 3 in its entirety.
- 49:16So I wouldn't because that kind of style.
- 49:23I don't think anime will come out like that anymore.
- 49:27Like that colour planet, the music stingers in between
- 49:30scenes. I think it's it is very 90s.
- 49:35Very dated, even the way that they draw their faces and stuff
- 49:39feels. Very dated.
- 49:41I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily, but I think you'll
- 49:45appreciate it more if you watched anime in the 90s or
- 49:49early 2000s. Or, you know, I think you will
- 49:54be like Kaiju #8 better or Sakamoto days.
- 50:01Sorry, I've got really bad hiccups.
- 50:03It's are you holding your breath?
- 50:06So it's all right, I say. Oh no.
- 50:10It's no, it's not a hiccup. She's dying.
- 50:16It's like, is there a hiccup? Something different down South.
- 50:19Hiccups. Are they different?
- 50:24No, there's no she's checking. Do you?
- 50:29It's a diaphragmatic irritation that is the hiccup.
- 50:35I know. Words too you got.
- 50:40You got really salty with me when I used the word pastiche
- 50:42the other day. Ironically, just like a
- 50:50pistachio. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 50:53Salted. Get it?
- 50:55Hey, Yeah, fair. So that was really Kenshin.
- 51:03Give it a go. Don't give it a go, but go into
- 51:06it knowing that you're you will be travelling back in time to a
- 51:09time when wannabe on top of the charts.
- 51:12And thus we come full circle. Chris, what else is going on on
- 51:17Nerdy Up North this week? Oh, just scrolling down to see
- 51:21that. Yeah.
- 51:21So on Sunday, we'll have Becca and Sarah on the Sunday podcast
- 51:27with Paul and Sammy doing childhood trauma.
- 51:31We should be fun. Laugh a minute at that, but he's
- 51:35actually I'm actually quite excited for it because like, you
- 51:38know, it's things like animals are farming wood and worship
- 51:41down like all those feel like I feel like it will exercise some
- 51:44demons from my childhood. I'm, I'm really interested to
- 51:48know what traumatize people as a child, because I'm like, yeah,
- 51:52and my father, I watch like pan Olympics and, and that kind of
- 51:56stuff. I had unfiltered access to like
- 52:01dodgy websites and steakcheese.com and stuff.
- 52:05It's just like, yes, I saw a man beheaded yesterday.
- 52:08Now I'm doing PE. And so yeah, that that'll be
- 52:12like a nice comparison to see what people's childhoods are
- 52:15like. And then on Monsters on the
- 52:17Monday, we've got Alfred Hitchcock.
- 52:20Which will be beautiful. It's really hard to say that
- 52:23surname normally. Alfred Hitchcock.
- 52:28Nothing funny about that. Moving on.
- 52:32No weird weird names are there. And then for two seconds on
- 52:38Tuesday. Yeah.
- 52:41We have upgrumps and we're doing Kevin and Perry.
- 52:48All I want to do is do it for guilt.
- 52:50Pickle, pickle, pickle. I'll take that off.
- 52:54I've got plenty. I've got about 5 bucket hats now
- 52:58and but I know we've only just talked about this, but what do
- 53:04you want to do next week on Anime Club?
- 53:09I'm determined to drag you one year further back into Gundam
- 53:15Wing. Yeah, I've never seen.
- 53:18This before which was an anime that I watched on Cartoon
- 53:22Network like peek peek at young anime Phoebe obsessed with it
- 53:27and I'm low key terrified. It is a show about child soldier
- 53:35essentially. But I I loved it and I'm I'm
- 53:39curious if I will still love it now so much.
- 53:45As a genuinely, it'd be the first time I've ever seen it.
- 53:49Yeah, you and you've said that you've not really seen many
- 53:51Gundam animes, right? So this will be this is one of
- 53:57one of the Gundam animes. Yeah, we're doing like the
- 54:03original series or something, because I'm assuming that this
- 54:0620 million series. So there are lots of different
- 54:09Gundam series like Gundam Destiny, Gundam Seed at Gundam
- 54:132000. I think it's one of them.
- 54:16But Gundam Wing is like, I think one of the like because it was
- 54:20on Cartoon Network at a formative time for people our
- 54:24age. I think it's one of those animes
- 54:25that is probably the most well known out of those Gundams.
- 54:31And yeah, there's a film called Endless Waltz, but I think we
- 54:38should watch the series. And I also think there are quite
- 54:41a few episodes, but it's not one of those animes that run ran
- 54:45forever and ever. It is like 3 Series top like
- 54:48total, I think three seasons total.
- 54:53Yeah, so. Well, because you said it was on
- 54:57court in network, I'm expecting the voice acting to be all
- 55:01right. So the watch isn't dub?
- 55:04Yeah, I think you could watch this in dub.
- 55:07I think the voice acting is all right.
- 55:08From what I remember, some of the characters are very
- 55:10brooding. It also has this storyline.
- 55:15So here's the other thing. We'll get into it next week.
- 55:18But they also has a storyline that I still think is like, if
- 55:22not more so relevant today than it was when we were kids.
- 55:25And I kind of love that about sci-fi when there's a kind of
- 55:29predictive element to what humanity will grapple with.
- 55:34Yeah. So yeah, we're going to watch
- 55:36Gundam Wing. Sounds good, sounds good.
- 55:40Yeah, yeah. And I always, I always want to
- 55:47sing the Shaman King thing is this Gundam Wing, Gundam Wing.
- 55:52But that's the Shaman King thing.
- 55:55And if you like that, I am at some point gonna also make you
- 55:57watch Jessica Floney. But I think that will hold up
- 55:59worse then. I'm getting loads of videos
- 56:05because I've been starting watching like classic anime.
- 56:08I've been looking for pictures in Google and me phones
- 56:11listening. There was and all this stuff,
- 56:12yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:13So. I've been getting loads of
- 56:15videos of escaflory. Wouldn't some gears are moving
- 56:19and how integrate all the systems are?
- 56:21I don't know what it's about. There's a few things.
- 56:25It is a Gundam anime and the Gundams what like there are
- 56:30Dragons, but they're like giant. They're like, you know, Komodo
- 56:34Dragons. They're like the Dragons look
- 56:36almost like Komodo Dragons rather than like a classic
- 56:40dragon from either Asia or Europe.
- 56:43So I think it's interesting for like some of the design choices
- 56:46it makes. But like the Gundams in that
- 56:49have like a like somewhat biological components.
- 56:52There's also like some sort of psychic kind of link stuff going
- 56:55on. There's also like fate machines
- 56:59as well in it, which is probably the gears that you're seeing is
- 57:03actually not the Gundams, but the fate machine in the anime
- 57:08where people are able to kind of like nudge what's happening into
- 57:13like a different tract of like reality almost.
- 57:17It's quite it is quite cool, but also some of the some we can
- 57:24watch, we can we can fully do that as well.
- 57:26It's on the list already, but some of it is.
- 57:29So there are some weird elements to it as well, which is why I'm
- 57:32also anxious about recommending it because it's got things like
- 57:35cat girls, fat girls are a thing in it that like there's lots of
- 57:41like very pretty, pretty men with long hair or wings is the
- 57:46thing. So there's some weird absolutely
- 57:51nothing. And I can tell you teenage
- 57:53Phoebe had nothing but against it either.
- 57:56But I'm just saying like, like, it might be weird, there might
- 58:01be some weirdness to it. So you know, let's try Gundam
- 58:04Wing 1st and then we'll try Escafloni.
- 58:12Grand. So thank you so much, Chris.
- 58:14Thank you everyone for joining us.
- 58:16If you if you really liked this week's episode, please go give
- 58:20us a comment. Tell us if you've got an anime
- 58:22that you'd like us to review or tell us, you know, something
- 58:26that you remember about the 1996, if you remember it at all.
- 58:29And if you remember it, were you really there, man, you know?
- 58:33Bye bye. Good girl.
