- 0:56Speaker 1: It might show up on the microphone. I don't know
- 0:58Speaker 1: if you guys are gonna hear it, but there is
- 1:00Speaker 1: a thunderous storm rolling overhead right now.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Yeah. BC is getting some interesting weather and disasters going
- 1:08Speaker 2: on right now.
- 1:09Speaker 1: No kidding. I mean, we got a bunch of wildfires.
- 1:11Speaker 1: That's that's typical.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But it's they're just like starting.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I feel like it is. It's just getting going. But
- 1:17Speaker 1: then there was a tornado warning.
- 1:19Speaker 2: For Central BC, wasn't it? I think?
- 1:22Speaker 1: Yeah, which is super rare rarity with the topographical landscape
- 1:26Speaker 1: we have at the boreal forest, It's like, yeah, that
- 1:29Speaker 1: just doesn't happen, but apparently it does.
- 1:31Speaker 2: So yeah, but I don't know if it's actually happened.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I don't know, I do care. I do remember once
- 1:37Speaker 1: being at a lake nest lake as a kid and
- 1:40Speaker 1: like seeing a tornado like almost touchdown on the lake
- 1:43Speaker 1: because it got so.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Windy and wild And was it actually like decently sized?
- 1:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh okay, No, this was like it was insane.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Because you can see those some you see them sometimes
- 1:53Speaker 2: in like parking lots, right, like a little something. Oh yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 2: it's going, but it's not like very large. No.
- 1:58Speaker 1: No, this this was like, I don't know, like this
- 2:00Speaker 1: of like a small house.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like the water on the top of
- 2:04Speaker 1: the lake was starting to like spin and like go up,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and it went up probably like like twenty thirty feet
- 2:09Speaker 1: a bit, and then it just kind of fizzled out.
- 2:12Speaker 1: But it was like, oh god.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Well, weren't they saying the tornado could get worse or
- 2:18Speaker 2: be worse because of the fires or something too?
- 2:20Speaker 1: I think so because of the temperature of the fire. Yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 1: air mixing, and yeah, it's a wild freaking thing. I
- 2:26Speaker 1: don't understand it. But hopefully everyone out there is safe
- 2:28Speaker 1: wherever you are, whether you're BC or not.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, a thunderstorm in the background of this might
- 2:33Speaker 2: be slightly fitting, right, It might be.
- 2:36Speaker 1: It might be in the thunder Rolls. We also want
- 2:41Speaker 1: to give a little bit of an announcement that we
- 2:43Speaker 1: have officially sold half of our tickets for our live
- 2:46Speaker 1: show coming up the end of the month. So if
- 2:48Speaker 1: you want to check out the tickets, you can go
- 2:50Speaker 1: ahead and check out our socials. There's some links for them.
- 2:53Speaker 1: We're doing a live show for our two hundredth episode.
- 2:57Speaker 1: The tickets are of course for showing up in person.
- 3:00Speaker 1: We're going to be at Trench Brewing. If you aren't
- 3:03Speaker 1: local to us, you can check out the live stream
- 3:06Speaker 1: over in a Patreon so you can join us on
- 3:07Speaker 1: Patreon and subscribe there and you get access to that
- 3:10Speaker 1: live stream.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going to be a fun night. The fact
- 3:12Speaker 2: that we're sold out or half sold out is pretty awesome.
- 3:14Speaker 1: It is. I'm pretty stoked and we I mean, the
- 3:18Speaker 1: last week is generally for events like this when tickets
- 3:20Speaker 1: really sell. So I have a feeling it's going to
- 3:23Speaker 1: be a packed hose.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, Oh my goodness, because we've done some
- 3:27Speaker 2: live events before and I think like max thirty people yes, right,
- 3:31Speaker 2: and this is about eighty or.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So maximum capacity.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, So that's like it's gonna be good.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's gonna be a bit more good. But we also
- 3:40Speaker 1: have some door prizes, like we got an order from
- 3:42Speaker 1: some of our merch coming in. We got some socks,
- 3:44Speaker 1: we got to throw blankets, we got some mugs, mugs
- 3:47Speaker 1: exclusive artisan mugs by the way, which is batch too,
- 3:50Speaker 1: from the mugs that were available for a short period
- 3:53Speaker 1: of time. But now they're just like the remainder is
- 3:55Speaker 1: only for giveaway.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Stuff exclusive artists in candles, Yes, made by yours truly.
- 4:02Speaker 1: There we go.
- 4:03Speaker 2: That doesn't have a logo yet because I haven't gotten
- 4:05Speaker 2: that far. But I've made some damn candles.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Have you made the candles yet, because do you have
- 4:11Speaker 1: like a week?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I have some made, but I might try a
- 4:15Speaker 2: couple more sents. Okay, but I do have some that
- 4:18Speaker 2: can be but I might try some more sense just
- 4:20Speaker 2: to see what my faves.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Are, Okay, gotcha? Yeah, And then there's something else that's
- 4:24Speaker 1: going to go along into like a little like a
- 4:25Speaker 1: Wicked Box giveaway part of this on the night of
- 4:28Speaker 1: it's my favorite thing as any giveaway we've ever done,
- 4:31Speaker 1: but it's like also kind of the dumbest thing to
- 4:34Speaker 1: ever give away. Is part of the Wicked Tree so
- 4:39Speaker 1: if you look at our logo, that tree is actually
- 4:41Speaker 1: a real tree.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really cool.
- 4:43Speaker 1: It's a photo that we took on our phone and
- 4:45Speaker 1: turn it into a logo. So we actually took some
- 4:47Speaker 1: sticks from those trees and put like certificates of authenticity
- 4:50Speaker 1: along with it. So, yeah, that's going to be a
- 4:53Speaker 1: little comp.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I think that's super cool. We should actually, like we
- 4:56Speaker 2: have a piece of the tree in our house.
- 4:59Speaker 1: We do it's.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Like a frame, put it on a frame or something.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You know, thats a bad idea.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I think that'd be really cool.
- 5:06Speaker 1: That would be cool.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, So this is a part two.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Part two, Yes, a part to the murders. So you
- 5:13Speaker 1: ready to discuss this to go into what happened and everything? Yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 1: do you remember where we left off?
- 5:20Speaker 2: Vaguely, but god I know that. I was just like pissed,
- 5:24Speaker 2: Like this case is just just a piss off.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Oh it gets worse. Trust me, you're going to be
- 5:28Speaker 1: pissed with this case one hundred and ten percent, like
- 5:30Speaker 1: it's it's absurd. But I will go over where we
- 5:35Speaker 1: left off and last episode I'll give you guys a
- 5:37Speaker 1: bit of a rundown. So we discussed last the Pettit
- 5:40Speaker 1: family and the two individuals individual sorry Hayes and Joshua,
- 5:45Speaker 1: who become partners in crime for committing breaking and enters
- 5:48Speaker 1: in the homes of you know, like some well off families.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Now their newest target was the Petits. Now the two
- 5:55Speaker 1: broke in found doctor William Pettitt sleeping downstairs as he
- 5:58Speaker 1: fell asleep reading paper or whatever, and they began to
- 6:01Speaker 1: beat him over the head with a baseball bat before
- 6:03Speaker 1: tying him up with zip ties to a pole in
- 6:05Speaker 1: the basement. They then, from there proceeded to find his wife,
- 6:10Speaker 1: Jennifer and their two daughters, Hayley, who was seventeen and Mikela,
- 6:14Speaker 1: who was eleven. Each one of them had their hands
- 6:17Speaker 1: and feet bound and pillowcases placed over their head. Now,
- 6:20Speaker 1: after all this, the two intruders proceeded to rifle through
- 6:24Speaker 1: and rob the place and discovered that Jennifer had a
- 6:27Speaker 1: bank account with a decent amount of money inside. So
- 6:30Speaker 1: their new plan was for Joshua to stay with the
- 6:34Speaker 1: family and hold them hostage while Hayes accompanied Jennifer to
- 6:37Speaker 1: the bank to make a withdrawal.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Okay, right, yep.
- 6:41Speaker 1: So at approximately nine am on July twenty third, two
- 6:44Speaker 1: thousand and seven. The two left the home and made
- 6:46Speaker 1: their way to the Bank of America, and that's where
- 6:48Speaker 1: we left off. And here we are for part two.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Okay, dang, is.
- 6:54Speaker 1: That like catching you all up? Oh yeah, and bells
- 6:56Speaker 1: and everything?
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah, totally?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Okay, good? So you ready for it?
- 7:01Speaker 3: Oh?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Gross?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sorry. I just cracked my knuckles.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm sure they heard that. If they did,
- 7:07Speaker 2: I'm not into.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That, Like I do it all the time, though, I know.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It's just if I ever cracked my neck knuckles, it's
- 7:13Speaker 2: a mistake, Like I did it in the air.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I do it all the time.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I know a lot of people do it.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I don't even notice when I do it. I just like,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I don't know, I just do it. It's like a
- 7:22Speaker 1: nervous twitch or something like this.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I just feel like it can't be good for you.
- 7:25Speaker 2: But I don't know. I don't know.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm no doctor. I am a true
- 7:29Speaker 1: Crown podcast host, and I will tell you about this episode.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I have been wait in a while. Let's do it.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Okay. So Hayes, the one who was driving the car
- 7:37Speaker 1: and bringing Jennifer to the bank, pulled up the car outside,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and they made an interesting choice. Jennifer Pettitt was allowed
- 7:46Speaker 1: to go inside to the bank, so low alone to
- 7:50Speaker 1: make the withdrawal. Now, apparently between Hayes and Joshua they
- 7:54Speaker 1: talked about it a little bit and figured out that
- 7:56Speaker 1: they they thought that if she were to go inside
- 7:58Speaker 1: without someone accompanying her and withdrew the money, it would,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you know, draw the least amount of suspicion.
- 8:07Speaker 2: That just seems like such an interesting plan.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Though it is. Yeah, yeah, Now, since they had her
- 8:14Speaker 1: family held hostage, they assumed that, you know, she would
- 8:18Speaker 1: do what they ask, which was to withdraw the money,
- 8:20Speaker 1: not telling what was happening, returned the car to Hayes,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and then you know, return to the house and you know,
- 8:25Speaker 1: we got the money and then so on. So far,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I mean it, it is an interesting move. It's a
- 8:30Speaker 1: bold move, honestly, like they.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Have some confidence to them almost.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I don't know if it's confidence more than arrogance.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe, Hey, I think.
- 8:39Speaker 1: It's arrogance, arrogance or ignorance, stupidity, Yeah, all of the above, maybe, regardless,
- 8:47Speaker 1: it was regardless of the reason it was a bold move,
- 8:50Speaker 1: let me just say that it was a bold move.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And I mean she would draw the least amount of suspicion.
- 8:57Speaker 1: They're right, but that's assuming that Jennifer does not tell
- 9:00Speaker 1: anyone at the bank about the situation. Now, I mean,
- 9:03Speaker 1: she doesn't have anyone like right beside her, so.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Of course she yea yeah, yeah, because her family, her
- 9:12Speaker 2: loved ones are literally in danger at home.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Exactly, so why would she not tell anyone? Yeah, So,
- 9:18Speaker 1: upon entering the bank, Jennifer approached the teller and kept
- 9:21Speaker 1: as calm as she possibly could, and she didn't want
- 9:23Speaker 1: to make any sort of scene that would give her
- 9:25Speaker 1: away to Hayes, who was waiting outside in the vehicle watching.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm sure exactly now, the bank surveillance camera captured Jennifer's
- 9:32Speaker 1: every move the moment she stepped foot inside, Though keeping
- 9:36Speaker 1: herself as calm as she could, the footage showed Jennifer
- 9:39Speaker 1: clearly anxious as she approached the teller. Now right away,
- 9:43Speaker 1: Jennifer began to explain to the teller of the situation,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and the bank manager, Mary Lyons, who was quickly called over,
- 9:49Speaker 1: understood the gravity of the situation. So she's all, like,
- 9:53Speaker 1: you know what, you know, I got some issues at home.
- 9:55Speaker 1: These people are holding my family and they need to
- 9:58Speaker 1: withdraw money. I don't want to call a scene like
- 10:00Speaker 1: all this sort of stuff. And thankfully Mary understood, and
- 10:04Speaker 1: she complied with the withdraw request and gave Jennifer a
- 10:07Speaker 1: total of fifteen thousand dollars cash. As things with the
- 10:11Speaker 1: transaction were being completed, Mary went back to her office
- 10:14Speaker 1: and immediately dialed nine one one. Okay, good, okay, And
- 10:19Speaker 1: I have that nine one one call here. Oh it's
- 10:22Speaker 1: almost five minutes long, so bear with me, but trust me,
- 10:25Speaker 1: it is worth listening to it all. Here we go
- 10:28Speaker 1: measure emergency.
- 10:29Speaker 3: My name is Mary lyons On, the banking center manager
- 10:31Speaker 3: at Bank of America at one eighty five Highland Avenue.
- 10:35Speaker 3: There is no robbery here, but we have a lady
- 10:38Speaker 3: who is in our bank right now who says that
- 10:41Speaker 3: her husband and children are being held at their house.
- 10:47Speaker 3: The people are in a car outside the bank. She
- 10:49Speaker 3: is getting fifteen thousand dollars to bring out to them
- 10:53Speaker 3: that if the police are told, they will kill her
- 10:55Speaker 3: children and the husband. Her name is Jennifer Pettit P
- 11:01Speaker 3: E T I T. She lives at three hundred Sorghum
- 11:06Speaker 3: Hill Road. She says they are being very nice, and
- 11:11Speaker 3: they have their faces covered. She is pectrified. I didn't
- 11:17Speaker 3: she wasn't going to call the police, but I came
- 11:19Speaker 3: in my office and I did.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Okay, she still is in the bank.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Yes she is, Okay, her husband and face and I
- 11:26Speaker 3: look at Yes, they're they're tied up. She said she's
- 11:31Speaker 3: taking fifteen thousand dollars out of a credit line. They
- 11:34Speaker 3: told us they wouldn't hurt anybody if she got back.
- 11:37Speaker 3: There was the money. She believes them. She's I think
- 11:39Speaker 3: she's walking out now, she's walking out. Now, I don't.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I will watch and see what kind of car she
- 11:45Speaker 3: gets into. I'm in my office with the store with
- 11:47Speaker 3: the lights off, and I'll try and see her. But
- 11:51Speaker 3: I don't want to make anything work obvious. I don't
- 11:53Speaker 3: want to, Okay.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Jennifer Pettitt, three hundred Road. Yeah, she's being held for
- 11:59Speaker 4: her her husband.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Yes, Yes, she said they're tied up.
- 12:05Speaker 4: She said, did she say anything about weapons anything that
- 12:08Speaker 4: she didn't?
- 12:08Speaker 3: She said, well, she said no, I don't know. She
- 12:11Speaker 3: said they've been very nice and she knows they'll loom
- 12:14Speaker 3: after they get the money. I'm trying to look and
- 12:17Speaker 3: see where she's gone. She went out and said, but
- 12:19Speaker 3: I don't. Oh wait, I see her walking. Now, she's walking.
- 12:22Speaker 3: She's walking there there, she's getting.
- 12:24Speaker 4: In a car.
- 12:25Speaker 3: It looks like it's like a gray suv.
- 12:28Speaker 4: They pulled up.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Now they're pulling out.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Hers.
- 12:32Speaker 3: No, somebody else is driving. Okay, they said, she said
- 12:34Speaker 3: they drove her here.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Okay, the captors drove her to the bank.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Yes, yes, they're driving. They're not coming out through the
- 12:41Speaker 3: through the suppose. So they must be going out by
- 12:45Speaker 3: this food Chi's restaurant over the seventy. That's where they
- 12:49Speaker 3: must be going out. Now, he did vehicles. I didn't.
- 12:56Speaker 4: They just pulled away.
- 12:57Speaker 3: They must have been waiting for over and then they
- 12:58Speaker 3: just pulled up and she just got it into it.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Okay, I need to stand on the line for me. Okay, okay,
- 13:06Speaker 4: Bagmancher got.
- 13:08Speaker 3: The police on the phone. Did you get the license plate?
- 13:12Speaker 4: They asked me, Oh, sir, okay, I want to tell
- 13:24Speaker 4: you what.
- 13:25Speaker 3: How do unar? It was a christ of PACIFICA PACIFICA.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 3: And my coller walked in here with me and said,
- 13:36Speaker 3: you know, and I agree, it's amazing how calm she
- 13:38Speaker 3: was so but but then again, she could have been petrified.
- 13:43Speaker 4: I don't know. Okay, p E T I T yep, okay, okay,
- 13:50Speaker 4: then put your back on hold.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I'm what if, she continued, does.
- 13:55Speaker 1: That uph.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Oh, I'm holding, yes, man, did you have h I
- 14:04Speaker 3: want to tell you Mike. Teller said that she saw
- 14:06Speaker 3: the driver. He had a black hood over, a hoodie
- 14:09Speaker 3: and a baseball cap on. She couldn't identify him, but
- 14:13Speaker 3: she did see that he there was someone in the
- 14:15Speaker 3: car and he did have a sweatshirt over ted and
- 14:18Speaker 3: a baseball cap.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Blackfooted sweatshirt and a baseball cap.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Baseball cap, white male, black male?
- 14:25Speaker 3: Could you tell it was a white male or a
- 14:26Speaker 3: black male Christians m Yeah, she seems white, but she
- 14:30Speaker 3: can't it was She said it was definitely not black,
- 14:34Speaker 3: but he was the driver.
- 14:35Speaker 4: He was the driver. Yes, did anyone get the license?
- 14:38Speaker 3: No, we didn't.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Okay, sorry, I'm gonna give you a hold. We're gonna
- 14:43Speaker 1: look a messer.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Okay boo.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Boo'.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Yes, that was sort of mill drive. Correct, That's that's
- 14:58Speaker 3: the address he had on the system.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yet, we're going to have a detective on the way
- 15:02Speaker 1: to the bank of speak.
- 15:03Speaker 3: You are right.
- 15:06Speaker 1: So, after receiving the nine to one to one call,
- 15:08Speaker 1: from the bank manager, who was incredible on that call,
- 15:11Speaker 1: by the way, super calm, collecting as much information as
- 15:14Speaker 1: they could, so phenomenal to them. The police quickly responded
- 15:18Speaker 1: by setting up a perimeter outside of the Pettit home.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Now they ensured that they kept their distance. They used
- 15:25Speaker 1: unmarked cars, blended in the surrounding in the neighborhood as
- 15:28Speaker 1: not to arouse any suspicion from Joshua or Hayes. I mean,
- 15:33Speaker 1: they did have a hostage situation going. They specifically told
- 15:37Speaker 1: Jennifer not to contact the police, but we now have
- 15:40Speaker 1: them contacted, so they're trying to make sure that that
- 15:45Speaker 1: they didn't let them know that the police knew what
- 15:48Speaker 1: they were trying to do.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:50Speaker 1: From there, they waited for a tactical team to arrive
- 15:52Speaker 1: before making any immediate entry into the home. Now, this
- 15:56Speaker 1: call made by the authorities has been very controversial, very controversial.
- 16:00Speaker 2: One.
- 16:01Speaker 1: There were hostages inside and people's lives were at risk,
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yet they stayed outside, did very little outside outside other
- 16:08Speaker 1: than secure the perimeter, and some people are a bit
- 16:10Speaker 1: angry about that. However, if they advanced it could have
- 16:15Speaker 1: put them at risk as well. Yeah, so it's a
- 16:17Speaker 1: difficult call that the authorities made.
- 16:19Speaker 2: It is and I think often in like hostage cases,
- 16:23Speaker 2: they do sort of, you know, stand back a little bit, right,
- 16:26Speaker 2: because they do. Yeah, it's a very difficult decision. I
- 16:28Speaker 2: can only imagine what do you do?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah, So, I mean they hesitated to engage directly because
- 16:34Speaker 1: they were concerned about the safety. They needed to coordinate
- 16:37Speaker 1: the approach, They needed to figure out what the situation was. Otherwise,
- 16:41Speaker 1: being too hasty could actually escalate and get someone hurt.
- 16:45Speaker 1: So they chose to sit back. And that's kind of
- 16:48Speaker 1: the situation. So Hayes managed to get back to the
- 16:52Speaker 1: home before the perimeter was set up. The perimeter is
- 16:55Speaker 1: now set up. Joshua Hayes and the family is all
- 16:57Speaker 1: inside with authorities surrounding the house in a casual manner.
- 17:02Speaker 1: It's not really noticeable.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Well the whole thing too, I have to be like
- 17:05Speaker 2: even the nine one one call, like it all just
- 17:08Speaker 2: seemed so calm, like chill, oh it was. I just
- 17:13Speaker 2: feel like if I was that bang manager, I'd be
- 17:15Speaker 2: losing my shit. Well and even still like so good,
- 17:18Speaker 2: like I'm meaning that in a good sense, like good
- 17:20Speaker 2: on her own.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and Jennifer seemed very cool. Yeah, Like the bank
- 17:25Speaker 1: manager was all like she could have been petrified. I
- 17:27Speaker 1: don't know, Yeah, seem very calm.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Like it's it's amazing what people can do sometimes, right.
- 17:33Speaker 1: When when you need to. Yeah, And I mean Joshua
- 17:37Speaker 1: and Hayes were actually even described as being quote nice
- 17:40Speaker 1: through the ordeal as well. So as far as they know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: things inside the house were calm, which gave the police,
- 17:47Speaker 1: you know, all the more reason to like relaxed and
- 17:50Speaker 1: bide their.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Time, right exactly.
- 17:52Speaker 1: So what they didn't know though, is what was going on,
- 17:56Speaker 1: is that it was going to change. Things that were
- 17:58Speaker 1: going on were going to flip soon. And then this
- 18:02Speaker 1: is whether they intervened or not. You see, Hayes, while
- 18:06Speaker 1: he was at the bank with Jennifer Pettitt making withdrawal,
- 18:09Speaker 1: Joshua was at the home with doctor Pettitt tied up
- 18:11Speaker 1: in the basement and the two daughters, seventeen year old
- 18:14Speaker 1: Haley An eleven year old Mike Ella. While alone in
- 18:18Speaker 1: the home, Joshua would escalate the encounter. He took the
- 18:21Speaker 1: opportunity that he had with the power he held over
- 18:25Speaker 1: the girls and began to sexually assault and rape eleven
- 18:28Speaker 1: year old Mike Kella and took pictures on his phone
- 18:32Speaker 1: in the process for sick and twisted keepsakes.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Holy shit.
- 18:39Speaker 1: All the while, doctor Pettitt was bound in the basement
- 18:42Speaker 1: and was powerless as he heard the screams of his
- 18:44Speaker 1: own masters.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Oh man, that I don't know why, but that's on.
- 18:49Speaker 2: That is unexpected to me.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's completely fucked up on fucked up because
- 18:56Speaker 1: he'd go from last episode we discussed their plan was
- 18:59Speaker 1: to run and they enter this home and then immediately
- 19:03Speaker 1: beat someone with a baseball bat nearly to death. And
- 19:07Speaker 1: now we're going and raping a minor.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah, what the shit? I don't understand. I feel like
- 19:14Speaker 2: something had to have happened to just like I mean,
- 19:18Speaker 2: I guess at some point if you changed or you
- 19:20Speaker 2: escalate or whatever, right, but this just seems so drastic.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we're going to talk a little bit about when.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Well I don't know if i'd say when, but an
- 19:33Speaker 1: indication that they were kind of planning this. Anyways, we'll
- 19:38Speaker 1: get there though. For now, though, Hayes had returned home
- 19:41Speaker 1: with Jennifer and things only got worse. Hayes claimed that
- 19:44Speaker 1: Joshua convinced them to take things further, but whether it
- 19:50Speaker 1: was pressure or not, their next move was certainly influenced
- 19:53Speaker 1: by the action. The actions that Joshua took while Hayes
- 19:56Speaker 1: was away, Jennifer was the next target for sexual assault.
- 19:59Speaker 1: When she was home once again, Doctor Pettitt was in
- 20:02Speaker 1: the basement of the house and could hear the screams
- 20:05Speaker 1: coming from upstairs, this time from his wife as she
- 20:08Speaker 1: was getting raped. Doctor Pettitt pulled at his restraints and
- 20:12Speaker 1: tried to break the bonds, but it was no use.
- 20:15Speaker 1: He screamed out for the individuals to stop, but they didn't. Instead,
- 20:18Speaker 1: they yelled back down at him, quote, don't worry, it's
- 20:23Speaker 1: all going to be over in a couple of minutes.
- 20:26Speaker 2: My goodness. That is just like, oh, gut wrenching.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Doctor Pettitt couldn't do anything to stop the horrors
- 20:33Speaker 1: that were recurring in his home.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Can you remind me which one is the older one
- 20:37Speaker 2: of these two Hayes.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Hayes I believe was, if I'm not mistaken, forty four
- 20:42Speaker 1: and Joshua was twenty seven or twenty four or something.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Like that, Okay, And Hayes is the one that just
- 20:49Speaker 2: wait raped Jennifer.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Correct and Joshua was the one that raped Mickella. Okay, yeah, now,
- 20:56Speaker 1: doctor Pettitt listening to all this was powerless. He knew
- 21:00Speaker 1: that he couldn't sit back and not try to do something,
- 21:03Speaker 1: even though that he had been bashed in the head
- 21:05Speaker 1: with a baseball bat several hours ago and was suffering
- 21:08Speaker 1: from intense blood loss. And he managed to summon the
- 21:12Speaker 1: last bit of strength that he had and used friction
- 21:14Speaker 1: on the pole and his hands. With the last bit
- 21:18Speaker 1: of strength he had, reefed on those zip ties and
- 21:22Speaker 1: he managed to break his hands free.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Holy wow, good for him. That's actually quite impressive.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Yes, now his feet were still bound, but he was
- 21:32Speaker 1: now free enough to be somewhat mobile, and he made
- 21:36Speaker 1: the decision to make his escape, and he began crawling
- 21:39Speaker 1: out of the basement and headed to the next door
- 21:42Speaker 1: neighbors for help. He pulled himself across the yard, up
- 21:46Speaker 1: the front steps and began banging on their door. The
- 21:49Speaker 1: neighbors were initially shocked when they opened the door. They
- 21:52Speaker 1: didn't even recognize their neighbor at first because he had
- 21:55Speaker 1: such a swollen and bloody face, but soon they understood
- 21:59Speaker 1: the situation to dialed nine to one one at around
- 22:02Speaker 1: nine fifty a m.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Weren't the police already out there?
- 22:06Speaker 1: The police were already out there, yes, but.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Kind of like discreetly or whatever.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, they most likely did see him crawl over
- 22:14Speaker 1: to the neighbors, but I mean that would have happened
- 22:17Speaker 1: within a matter of a minute or two. And they
- 22:19Speaker 1: dialed nine one one, and then it's like, okay, police
- 22:22Speaker 1: are already setting a perimeter. They're trying to figure out
- 22:24Speaker 1: what to do. But the police are also still waiting
- 22:26Speaker 1: for the tactical team to come in right now, Oh okay,
- 22:29Speaker 1: So they're most likely holding their position and trying to
- 22:31Speaker 1: get confirmation of what's really going on inside. And it
- 22:35Speaker 1: is unclear exactly when it was discovered that doctor Pettitt
- 22:38Speaker 1: had escaped from his bonds in the house, but Joshua
- 22:41Speaker 1: eventually did notice this and told Hayes. Hayes was apparently
- 22:45Speaker 1: still in the act of raping Jennifer when this occurred,
- 22:48Speaker 1: but Joshua and Hayes began to panic. They now knew
- 22:53Speaker 1: they the cops were going to be after them, and
- 22:57Speaker 1: in that moment, Hayes wrapped his hands around jennifer neck
- 23:00Speaker 1: and began to squeeze until the life slowly drained from
- 23:03Speaker 1: her eyes and she took her last breath.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. Okay.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Panic seemed to sweep through the whole house, both from
- 23:14Speaker 1: the daughters who just listened to their mother get murdered
- 23:17Speaker 1: and the perpetrator who lost petrators, i should say, who
- 23:20Speaker 1: lost control of the situation. Together, they grabbed two cans
- 23:24Speaker 1: of gas from inside the house and doused Jennifer's lifeless
- 23:27Speaker 1: body laying on the living room floor with the contents,
- 23:31Speaker 1: as well as various parts of the house, including the
- 23:34Speaker 1: daughter's bedroom where they were tied up. Surveillance footage later
- 23:40Speaker 1: actually revealed that Hayes had purchased ten dollars worth of
- 23:43Speaker 1: gasoline in two gas cans that were taken from the
- 23:47Speaker 1: petted home from a nearby gas station at around seven
- 23:50Speaker 1: am earlier that morning, which indicates that Hayes had left
- 23:54Speaker 1: the house to buy the gasoline, returned with the cans
- 23:57Speaker 1: back to the home before making Jennifer to the bank.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Despite their escalating panic, it appears that setting fire to
- 24:06Speaker 1: the house had been a part of their plan this
- 24:08Speaker 1: entire time.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Oh okay, it was not.
- 24:11Speaker 1: In the moment escalation.
- 24:14Speaker 2: No, and the police wouldn't have known this, I guess, Hey,
- 24:17Speaker 2: it was like later.
- 24:18Speaker 1: That they It was later through investigation that they discovered
- 24:22Speaker 1: this footage and the purchase of the gasoline and everything.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Yes, because that would sure, I feel it could have
- 24:27Speaker 2: changed some things, right.
- 24:29Speaker 1: If they knew. But how would they know? It's just
- 24:30Speaker 1: someone buying gas. It's all that anyone knew, right, Yeah,
- 24:34Speaker 1: but no, in hindsight, this is one clear premeditation HM.
- 24:42Speaker 1: So the two individuals continued to pour the gas on
- 24:45Speaker 1: the Pettit sister's beds, their clothing, and once the cans
- 24:49Speaker 1: were emptied, Hayes and Joshua lit the fire with the
- 24:52Speaker 1: girls still tied to the beds inside the home, and
- 24:55Speaker 1: they fled the scene. Flames quickly engulfed the in side
- 25:00Speaker 1: of the home, tearing through everything in its path. Both
- 25:04Speaker 1: Haley and Mikella would unfortunately succumb to the devastating fire
- 25:08Speaker 1: and would ultimately die as a result of smoke inhalation.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Haley did manage to escape her restraints and ran into
- 25:16Speaker 1: the hallway before collapsing and dying near the top of
- 25:19Speaker 1: the staircase. She suffered third and fourth degree burns on
- 25:23Speaker 1: her feet before she died. My goodness, gracious Mikella was
- 25:28Speaker 1: found still bound and tied to her bed. Joshua and
- 25:33Speaker 1: Hayes fled the house unharmed, thankfully. Those shit oh yeah,
- 25:40Speaker 1: they are yeah, don't get me wrong. They're fucking pieces
- 25:42Speaker 1: of ship through and through now thankfully. Though the house
- 25:45Speaker 1: was surrounded by police, there was a perimeter set up.
- 25:50Speaker 1: As the flames spread through the home, the police were
- 25:52Speaker 1: already beginning to close in due to the second nine
- 25:55Speaker 1: to one one call place by the neighbor, and only
- 25:58Speaker 1: about ten minutes later, at around ten am, they found
- 26:01Speaker 1: themselves face to face with the individuals fleeing from the
- 26:04Speaker 1: scene in the Pettit family vehicle. They attempted to drive
- 26:09Speaker 1: and bash their way through a police barricade on the road.
- 26:14Speaker 1: They smashed the car into the side of a police cruiser,
- 26:16Speaker 1: hoping to move it aside and gain their freedom. However,
- 26:20Speaker 1: it was useless. Police were able to quickly apprehend both
- 26:24Speaker 1: Joshua and Haze from the smashed vehicles, and fire rescue
- 26:29Speaker 1: was now being called to deal with the flames pouring
- 26:32Speaker 1: out from the home that they had just lit and
- 26:34Speaker 1: left behind.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Okay, well, we gotta be thankful of this gosh.
- 26:39Speaker 1: That they got caught and they got caught. Yes, that
- 26:42Speaker 1: is the small silver lining in this situation for sure,
- 26:47Speaker 1: But I mean they the shit that they did. And
- 26:52Speaker 1: part of the reason why people are so upset with
- 26:54Speaker 1: the controversial controversy on the police not entering the home
- 26:59Speaker 1: is a lot of this shit happened while the police
- 27:01Speaker 1: were still outside, right, So you had Jennifer Pettitt being
- 27:07Speaker 1: raped and murdered with the police standing outside the house
- 27:11Speaker 1: not doing nothing. You had the two girls being doused
- 27:14Speaker 1: in gasoline, the house being lit on fire, with the
- 27:18Speaker 1: police surrounding the house doing nothing.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Yeah, because I mean, like they all died anyway, right.
- 27:25Speaker 1: So exactly. But the only thing is the police did
- 27:28Speaker 1: not know the police had information that they were given.
- 27:32Speaker 1: The information that they were given was everything inside. They
- 27:34Speaker 1: were acting nice. They just wanted money, would be left alone.
- 27:37Speaker 1: So the police were biding time assuming that they're still
- 27:41Speaker 1: being nice and everything inside.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Well, because didn't Jennifer. I feel like Jennifer at the
- 27:46Speaker 2: bank said that she was sure too that once they
- 27:51Speaker 2: got the money that like they would leave exactly. But
- 27:55Speaker 2: that was not the case exactly, And I just realized two,
- 28:01Speaker 2: holy shit, the dad, yep, is that the fucking neighbor's house. Yeah,
- 28:09Speaker 2: watching this.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll touch on that though.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Oh goodness.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So the interrogation of these two fucking assholes, of course
- 28:22Speaker 1: quickly began, and it's no surprise that they both, these
- 28:27Speaker 1: both spineless individuals, tried to pin the blame on each other.
- 28:30Speaker 1: They both did confess to the murders. I mean, how
- 28:33Speaker 1: could they not really, but they each claim that the
- 28:37Speaker 1: other was the mastermind behind the whole thing. Of course, Yeah,
- 28:41Speaker 1: why wouldn't they, right, Well, no, he made me do it. No,
- 28:43Speaker 1: he made me like, yeah, fuck you.
- 28:45Speaker 2: It's very obviously they're not like good people.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Yeah, through and through. Joshua also also claimed that when
- 28:52Speaker 1: he did assault eleven year old Mikela, he believed she
- 28:55Speaker 1: was fourteen or sixteen years old, which doesn't make it
- 28:59Speaker 1: any better whatsover.
- 29:00Speaker 2: No, like, not at all.
- 29:01Speaker 1: No, it's like, oh, she's she's eleven, she's underage. Well
- 29:06Speaker 1: I thought she was still under age. It's a little bit.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Old, a little bit older years what the fuck? Oh gosh.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, I feel like he's like the Grinch
- 29:19Speaker 1: and I wouldn't touch him with like a thirty nine
- 29:20Speaker 1: and a half foot pole. So the situation like, you're
- 29:23Speaker 1: fucking disgusting now. Forensic testing results on Mikella's remains showed
- 29:28Speaker 1: that there was bleach on her clothing that she was
- 29:31Speaker 1: wearing at the time, which indicated that he most likely
- 29:34Speaker 1: tried to eliminate any DNA evidence that was left behind
- 29:38Speaker 1: from the assault to cover his own ass. Really, yes, However,
- 29:43Speaker 1: he could not deny it because the photos that were
- 29:47Speaker 1: found on his phone with his genitals poking in from
- 29:53Speaker 1: like the side of the frame of the photos and
- 29:55Speaker 1: stuff with Mikelle in the frame.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, gracious, the fact that he just took
- 30:00Speaker 2: photos of this, I know, is just I mean, it's good,
- 30:04Speaker 2: it's I guess it's good because now he's going to
- 30:07Speaker 2: be charged with this because otherwise they.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Made time there was evidence.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but oh my goodness, Yeah, No, that's.
- 30:13Speaker 1: A small silver lining. Is It's good that there was
- 30:15Speaker 1: evidence to prove it. But it's still fucking discussing. And
- 30:19Speaker 1: I mean, if that wasn't bad enough though, too. Joshua
- 30:21Speaker 1: actually directly blamed doctor Pettitt for the murders of his
- 30:25Speaker 1: own fucking family, calling him quote a coward in his diary,
- 30:33Speaker 1: a diary that would later be used in evidence during
- 30:36Speaker 1: the trial.
- 30:37Speaker 2: How do they think this?
- 30:40Speaker 1: Basically, like he's like, oh, you could have stopped it,
- 30:42Speaker 1: but he didn't do anything to stop it.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Wow, Like two people, two males are breaking into your
- 30:48Speaker 2: home while you're sleeping and then tie you up and
- 30:53Speaker 2: you do manage to get free, which is like a miracle,
- 30:56Speaker 2: but like you're a coward and not doing anything about it.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Yeah, regardless of his fucking writings, doctor Pettitt couldn't have
- 31:02Speaker 1: done anything to have saved his family. You wanted to,
- 31:05Speaker 1: which he did want to.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Well, and yeah, and he was in the process of
- 31:08Speaker 2: fucking trying.
- 31:09Speaker 1: So now, doctor Pettitt did in fact survive this incident,
- 31:13Speaker 1: despite his very severe injuries and significant blood loss, and
- 31:17Speaker 1: would be the only surviving member of his family from
- 31:19Speaker 1: the incident. His physical recovery involved extensive medical treatment with
- 31:25Speaker 1: while his emotional recovery was a whole different story. He
- 31:30Speaker 1: too blamed himself for the death of his wife and
- 31:32Speaker 1: two daughters. He struggled with the choice that he made
- 31:35Speaker 1: of escaping from the basement and going to the neighbors
- 31:37Speaker 1: for help rather than heading upstairs to try and protect
- 31:40Speaker 1: his family himself. Facing the perpetrator's head on. However, in
- 31:47Speaker 1: his contention, his feet were still bound and he was
- 31:52Speaker 1: seriously seriously injured. I mean, he was like bleeding out
- 31:56Speaker 1: because he was on blood thinners.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Remember this, right, I forgot about that.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Yes, he would have been absolutely no match for anyone,
- 32:03Speaker 1: even if he fucking tried.
- 32:05Speaker 2: They would have just killed him instantly.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Yeah, he would have been crawling on the floor. And
- 32:09Speaker 1: how is he going to fight two individuals?
- 32:11Speaker 2: Yeah, so at least he's going outside to try to
- 32:13Speaker 2: get some help.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Oh, it just like breaks my heart though that he's
- 32:18Speaker 2: blaming himself.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And so, as I mentioned, it was premeditated that both
- 32:23Speaker 1: Joshua and Hayes intended to burn this place down with
- 32:26Speaker 1: the purchase of that gasoline. They both already beat him
- 32:29Speaker 1: nearly to death with a baseball bat, raped two out
- 32:32Speaker 1: of three of the women inside, And if he did
- 32:35Speaker 1: make the difficult choice to attempt to confront the attackers
- 32:38Speaker 1: instead of seeking help, it's clear he too would have
- 32:41Speaker 1: been burned in that house with the rest of his family,
- 32:45Speaker 1: and he would not be alive today one hundred percent.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Hmm. Yeah. But I mean, gosh, like I just feel
- 32:55Speaker 2: so bad for him, because to move forward from that
- 32:58Speaker 2: is like, it's just almost on him.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I can't imagine being in the shoes of that. Yeah,
- 33:02Speaker 1: I can't imagine the struggles, the thoughts, obviously the depression
- 33:06Speaker 1: that's going to come alongside it, but wholeheartedly not his fault.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Oh no, Yeah, there was nothing that he could do.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Now. Thankfully, with the support of his remaining relatives and counseling,
- 33:18Speaker 1: doctor Pettitt was able to make full recovery and is
- 33:21Speaker 1: living a full and happy life today. It was difficult,
- 33:26Speaker 1: but he did get remarried and actually even had a son.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Oh really, hey, yes, okay.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Now. The trials of Hayes and Joshua for the Cheshire
- 33:37Speaker 1: home invasion murders were a very highly publicized and deeply
- 33:41Speaker 1: emotional event, drawing extensive media attention due to the brutality
- 33:46Speaker 1: of these crimes. The trials included crucial evidence such as
- 33:50Speaker 1: testimony from doctor William Pettit himself, Good gathered surveillance footage
- 33:55Speaker 1: from places such as the bank and gas station where
- 33:57Speaker 1: they bought the fuel, forensic now and confessions from both perpetrators,
- 34:02Speaker 1: Joshua's diary photos taken during the assault. Now Hayes faced
- 34:07Speaker 1: charges including six counts of capital felony, three counts of murder,
- 34:12Speaker 1: four counts of kidnapping, one count of arson, and multiple
- 34:15Speaker 1: counts of sexual assault and burglary. The trial began in
- 34:19Speaker 1: September of twenty ten, and Hayes was found guilty on
- 34:23Speaker 1: a total of sixteen counts on October fifth, twenty ten.
- 34:28Speaker 1: As a result, Hayes was sentenced to death on November
- 34:31Speaker 1: twenty seventh, twenty ten, but after connecticut abolishment of the
- 34:35Speaker 1: death penalty in twenty twelve, the sentence was changed to
- 34:38Speaker 1: life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. As for Joshua,
- 34:45Speaker 1: he faced similar charges, six counts of capital felony, three
- 34:48Speaker 1: counts of murder, four counts of kidnapping, and additional charges
- 34:51Speaker 1: of sexual assault and burglary. His trial commenced on September
- 34:56Speaker 1: in September of twenty eleven, resulting in a guilty verdict
- 34:59Speaker 1: on all seventeen counts on October thirteenth, twenty eleven. Joshua
- 35:06Speaker 1: was sentenced to death on December ninth, twenty eleven, but
- 35:09Speaker 1: like Hayes, his sentence was changed to life imprisonment without
- 35:12Speaker 1: the possibility of parole following the abolishment of the death
- 35:16Speaker 1: penalty in Connecticut.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Those are good, pun like, those are like thank you
- 35:22Speaker 2: for that. Yes, Like they're still in jail, which is yes, forever.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And they are being held at different facilities. Hayes is
- 35:30Speaker 1: currently incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution Benisher Township and
- 35:35Speaker 1: I just fumbled that, sorry, the State Correctional Institution Benner
- 35:40Speaker 1: Township in Pennsylvania, whereas Joshua is at the State Correctional
- 35:45Speaker 1: Institution Phoenix, also in Pennsylvania.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Okay, I honestly that just makes sense, Like that makes sense,
- 35:50Speaker 2: but I would never even thought of it. But yeah,
- 35:53Speaker 2: they would have to be. Yeah, those two together are like,
- 35:57Speaker 2: oh terrible.
- 35:58Speaker 1: It's like mixing shit and piss. Yeah, yeah, worse now.
- 36:04Speaker 1: In two thousand and seven, prior to the convictions and
- 36:07Speaker 1: everything like this, the Pettitt Family Foundation was established by
- 36:11Speaker 1: doctor William Pettitt in memory of his wife, Jennifer Hawk Pettit,
- 36:15Speaker 1: and daughters Hailey and Mikella Pettitt. The foundation's mission is
- 36:19Speaker 1: to honor their lives by supporting causes that they were
- 36:22Speaker 1: that were important to them and that reflected their values
- 36:25Speaker 1: and interests, such as education, chronic illness, advocacy, and violence
- 36:30Speaker 1: prevention and victim assistance.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Oh man, that's so nice.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Eh, that is the story of the Schescher murders.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Hm. Wow, that is like that's a pretty brutal one.
- 36:44Speaker 2: I feel like that is really up there.
- 36:47Speaker 1: For we flew through that second part.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Actually I just realized, wow, yeah, well still like holy shit, though, that.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Was you take it all in.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like the loveliest of families, right, So
- 37:00Speaker 2: it just I don't know, it just makes you kind
- 37:02Speaker 2: of think a little bit, like, holy shit, no one
- 37:04Speaker 2: is safe from like terrible people if if they want something.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Right, all it took was in part one, we discussed
- 37:12Speaker 1: Jennifer taking Mikella to the grocery store, and Joshua just
- 37:16Speaker 1: so happened to be at the same store and said, hey, the.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Fitting targets because too, Like I also feel like at
- 37:23Speaker 2: the grocery store, like I don't even know if I like,
- 37:25Speaker 2: you're not paying attention really right to know the people
- 37:28Speaker 2: around you.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I don't even trying to avoid eye contact.
- 37:31Speaker 2: I know, like sometimes you have to run grocery stores,
- 37:35Speaker 2: you do run into people, and so I'm always like
- 37:37Speaker 2: in and out, like it's like one place I don't
- 37:39Speaker 2: love running into people, but I don't think that. I'm
- 37:43Speaker 2: usually pretty observant, I feel like of my surroundings, but
- 37:46Speaker 2: just thinking about this at a grocery store, I'm not
- 37:48Speaker 2: sure I really am.
- 37:50Speaker 1: I think you're mostly distracted at a grocery store.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a task you're in there doing. Everyone's just
- 37:55Speaker 1: minding their own business, generally speaking. It's in and out.
- 37:58Speaker 1: You have a list you're I don't know, checking which
- 38:01Speaker 1: bananas are right y not, or which cookies are on
- 38:05Speaker 1: sale or what's the date on the milk, and like.
- 38:08Speaker 2: You know, awesome. So one place that we couldn't have
- 38:11Speaker 2: our OCD and anxiety going fucking crazy now is just change.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Wow, Yeah, oh honey, Bunny is up and like, okay,
- 38:26Speaker 2: that was quite the story.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Yeah. The dogs are are a little anxious in this storm,
- 38:31Speaker 1: that's for sure.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Well yeah, yeah, okay, that would have been like a
- 38:35Speaker 2: brutal want to research, Holy heck it was.
- 38:38Speaker 1: And there's a lot to this. I feel like each part,
- 38:41Speaker 1: Like I think like part one was only like fairly
- 38:44Speaker 1: over half an hour, and I think this part's probably
- 38:46Speaker 1: like the same. I feel like it could have been
- 38:48Speaker 1: one episode, but like I had so much information for
- 38:51Speaker 1: this I think I just was on a mission and
- 38:54Speaker 1: just like blew through all the information so fast.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Well, I know, I was just very like anxious to
- 38:58Speaker 2: hear what the fuck happened. I was just hoping that
- 39:04Speaker 2: that there would be more survivors of course, right.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Yeah, but unfortunately there wasn't.
- 39:11Speaker 2: I mean, good for him too for being able to
- 39:13Speaker 2: like move on, you know to some extent, because that
- 39:16Speaker 2: is just.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Yeah, terrifying, yeahing haunting.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Yeah, like just the trauma of that alone, I don't
- 39:24Speaker 2: even quite you don't know, like it'd take a lot
- 39:26Speaker 2: of work to get through that, right.
- 39:29Speaker 1: It would, And I honestly would imagine he's still struggling
- 39:31Speaker 1: with some of the today.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 39:36Speaker 1: May those two fucking rot because holy shit.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Yeah, they deserve to never ever ever see like the
- 39:42Speaker 2: outside of a prison ever. Nope, And I would be
- 39:45Speaker 2: surprised there. I mean, they can't be enjoying themselves in
- 39:48Speaker 2: there because they like were rapist, right and like killed
- 39:52Speaker 2: children and stuff.
- 39:53Speaker 1: So it's still mind boggling to me though, how they
- 39:56Speaker 1: they flip that switch so so quick, like going into
- 40:00Speaker 1: this this house, they knew they were going to do
- 40:04Speaker 1: some of this stuff because one of the first things
- 40:05Speaker 1: he did was nearly beat someone to deathly base all that,
- 40:08Speaker 1: and as far as I'm aware, they were just breaking
- 40:11Speaker 1: and entering before together. Right, Yeah, So did they go
- 40:16Speaker 1: into this house knowing or did they just like get
- 40:20Speaker 1: in saw the situation and it just fucking escalated in
- 40:23Speaker 1: that moment when they got the bat in their hands,
- 40:25Speaker 1: and then from there it just went out of control
- 40:27Speaker 1: and they're like, fuck, yeah, let's just do whatever because
- 40:29Speaker 1: we have that power and we're just drunk with it now.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Yeah. See, that's another thing that doesn't make any sense
- 40:35Speaker 2: to me, No any sense, because it almost seems like
- 40:38Speaker 2: something would have happened because we did talk about them
- 40:41Speaker 2: getting like more and more confident confident.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Right, Yes, definitely they were getting more and more confident
- 40:47Speaker 1: because Joshua was kind of like all like ninja mode
- 40:50Speaker 1: and shit breaking into places, right because he liked to
- 40:52Speaker 1: fucking stare at people and move shit in their house,
- 40:55Speaker 1: whereas Haze was like, hey, we can do that and
- 40:58Speaker 1: make the big old ink from cashing in on stealing
- 41:02Speaker 1: their shit. And as they developed their the little team,
- 41:05Speaker 1: they got that confidence. But that confidence, for some reason
- 41:08Speaker 1: in this case turned into arrogance drunk with power. I
- 41:14Speaker 1: don't know, idiocy. For the murderous rage, I don't know
- 41:19Speaker 1: how to describe it.
- 41:20Speaker 2: You almost feel like it is just was it. It
- 41:23Speaker 2: just kept going kind of thing because some of the
- 41:26Speaker 2: things they did, though, didn't seem like there was like
- 41:28Speaker 2: super thought through either.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Right, No, definitely not. I don't think they were super
- 41:33Speaker 1: thought through, but they were definitely premeditated by definition.
- 41:40Speaker 2: But I think lots of them were premeditated when they
- 41:42Speaker 2: were within the house though.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Yes, but the premeditation can be like thirty seconds. Yeah,
- 41:47Speaker 1: that's they thought about it. It wasn't just a reaction,
- 41:51Speaker 1: you know what I mean. For the gasoline, they went out,
- 41:53Speaker 1: purchased it, brought it home, then several hours later used
- 41:56Speaker 1: it to light the house on fire. Joshua, while Hayes
- 42:00Speaker 1: was out, seized that opportunity and assaulted Mikela.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 1: When Hayes came back, then it was Jennifer's turn.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Well, and I think to them just seeing that they
- 42:12Speaker 2: didn't have much that they were going to make off
- 42:14Speaker 2: of this house, and then they did come across like
- 42:17Speaker 2: the bill or like the statement or whatever, and then
- 42:21Speaker 2: went to the bank. So it was like, yeah, I
- 42:23Speaker 2: just think it was an escalation kind of like just
- 42:27Speaker 2: a real shitty one.
- 42:28Speaker 1: It got out of hand fast. But why it got
- 42:30Speaker 1: out of hand because nothing else ever got out of
- 42:33Speaker 1: hand in their other incidents.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Well, they always got things here. They were probably thinking
- 42:37Speaker 2: they were going to get a home bunch of stuff
- 42:39Speaker 2: and then.
- 42:40Speaker 1: You know, they they were about to get fifteen grand.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but they also didn't, like I feel like this
- 42:47Speaker 2: family knew them, like they might be able to identify
- 42:51Speaker 2: them in sorts.
- 42:52Speaker 1: But before they even knew they weren't going to get anything,
- 42:56Speaker 1: they had already beaten doctor Pettitt nearly to death with
- 42:58Speaker 1: a baseball bands.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Right right, Okay, but maybe I'm just saying too. Maybe
- 43:04Speaker 2: if they came back got the fifteen grand and the
- 43:08Speaker 2: one I can't even remember which one it was, Joshua
- 43:11Speaker 2: hadn't raped the girl, maybe they would have just left.
- 43:15Speaker 2: But it was like that's like because there's like DNA
- 43:19Speaker 2: and like that's a real real bad thing, right.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Yeah, But he probably thought he's gonna get away with
- 43:26Speaker 1: that because the bleach situation.
- 43:28Speaker 2: I don't know, But then maybe the other guy was like, no,
- 43:31Speaker 2: what the fuck are you doing? And then so then
- 43:33Speaker 2: he took the opportunity and I don't know.
- 43:36Speaker 1: It's a whole fucked up thing, and it doesn't make
- 43:38Speaker 1: sense why it escalated the way it did. But the
- 43:41Speaker 1: fact remains they did it with intent, and that's fucked The.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Fact remains that these two are the biggest pieces of shit.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Oh they're douche canoes. Yeah, they're thorough douche canoes. And
- 43:54Speaker 1: I do want to say that doctor Pettitt is the
- 43:56Speaker 1: badass of the day for breaking those fucking bonds, crawling
- 44:00Speaker 1: across the lawn, living through damn near bleeding out and
- 44:06Speaker 1: getting himself to safety and calling nine to one one
- 44:09Speaker 1: to save his family.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Well, yeah, and he too. I feel like, you know,
- 44:13Speaker 2: she needs to take some credit to for the sentences
- 44:16Speaker 2: that they did get because he was there, right and
- 44:18Speaker 2: he like testified in court and stuff, definitely, which would
- 44:22Speaker 2: not have been easy.
- 44:24Speaker 1: No, So, definite badass of the day going out to
- 44:27Speaker 1: doctor Pettit And hopefully you guys enjoyed this episode. Hopefully
