- 0:02Hey guys, this is the Daily Ripples.
- 0:04I'm Corey, host and the co-host and the host of the co-host.
- 0:10So I'm all of it today.
- 0:15But before I do these things, I don't know.
- 0:19We're going to get into it in a second.
- 0:20But I always pray.
- 0:22I always bring God into it because I don't feel like this is me talking to you guys.
- 0:26It's just me being a vessel through me to be able to be of service to another person.
- 0:31And, you know, that's why I do these.
- 0:34And that's why I'm sure Pastor Mike does them.
- 0:35And just to be able to be of service.
- 0:38And, you know, it's not me out here, you know, giving advice to people's lives.
- 0:43What I've done in my life is, you know, what I've done in my life.
- 0:47And I've done a lot of bad things in my life, too.
- 0:50So that's why I bring God into it because my point of view is a lot of bad.
- 1:02But, you know, what's been the central factor of my life lately has been God.
- 1:07And, you know, God has redirected my life in such a way that through a simple process.
- 1:16Anyways, I don't...
- 1:17June 12th, learning true partnership.
- 1:22The stone, healthy relationships require humility, honesty, and trust.
- 1:27When I insist on control or self-protection, real partnership becomes difficult.
- 1:33Ripple one practical.
- 1:34Today, I'll examine how I show up in my relationships.
- 1:37Am I listening or only reacting?
- 1:39Am I giving as well as receiving?
- 1:42I will take a step toward being a more trustworthy and present partner in my interactions.
- 1:49Ripple 2 Spiritual
- 1:51As I follow Christ who lived in perfect relationship with others, the Holy Spirit teaches me how to love well.
- 1:57The Father shapes my character so that I can move from isolation and control into connection and trust.
- 2:04Over time, I learned that true partnership is built on humility and shared growth.
- 2:14yeah like I was saying at the beginning of this
- 2:17you know I read these a little bit
- 2:21kind of think on them and
- 2:23kind of connect some Bible verses to them and things
- 2:26and I was thinking about
- 2:29our church is in 1st Peter we're kind of going through that
- 2:33in a thing and it says in 1st Peter
- 2:413
- 2:41all of you be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
- 2:49Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing,
- 2:57because to this you were called so that so many inherit a blessing. For whoever would love life and
- 3:04see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
- 3:11They must turn from evil and do good.
- 3:14They must seek peace and pursue it.
- 3:16For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their prayers.
- 3:22But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
- 3:28And I remember me and my significant other, we were going through a pretty rough time.
- 3:36And at the time, she was about to leave.
- 3:44I mean, you know, we went through a lot in the beginning of our deal.
- 3:48And I don't think I talk enough about, you know, all the struggles.
- 3:53Because, you know, without the struggles, I wouldn't be here.
- 3:59But I remember there was a big, big fight we had.
- 4:01And she had packed up her bags.
- 4:07And I remember calling my sponsor.
- 4:10And I was like, hey, what can I do?
- 4:13And, you know, I wanted that.
- 4:14What I wanted was, like, the secret answer to the secret code for the manipulation.
- 4:21And, you know, I got this prayer tattooed on my back.
- 4:25And it's the St. Francis prayer.
- 4:28And, you know, he sent me a couple pieces of it.
- 4:31You know, it was understand instead of being understood, you know, comfort instead of being comforted.
- 4:37And, you know, so I, when, you know, I go into conversations a lot with my significant other, high value conversations that, you know, it's, it's really good for me to do that.
- 4:52It's really good for me to bring God into it first and, you know, and bring these different prayers.
- 4:59Because, you know, for me, well, I was talking about this the other day.
- 5:04And, man, my significant other has a very big, I was talking about this in the meeting the other day, has a very big accent.
- 5:15You know, she's very, very Southern.
- 5:21And, um, but early on when she was pregnant, she hadn't felt the baby in a couple of days.
- 5:31Um, and she called me and, you know, man, I Googled it and, you know, it was a scare.
- 5:36It was a real thing.
- 5:37It's a scary thing.
- 5:38You know, when you don't feel the baby and I didn't, you know, I kind of brushed it off
- 5:42cause I didn't, you know, I don't know anything.
- 5:43And then after I read about it, it was like, you know, seek medical attention immediately.
- 5:47And I was like, oh, no, we got to go to the hospital.
- 5:51So we did.
- 5:53We went to, we didn't go to the, you know, the kids' hospital, the women's hospital.
- 6:00We went straight to the ER.
- 6:03And, you know, this is where we found out there's a difference, too.
- 6:09So we get there, and, you know, because she has this accent, she had told them we haven't felt the baby.
- 6:17And someone in there thought she said fell, that she had fell or something of those terms.
- 6:23And next thing you know, we're back in the back and there's doctors and nurses and people, you know, throwing IVs in her and all these things really quickly.
- 6:31And, you know, she doesn't do well with a lot of people anyways.
- 6:37And, you know, I'm freaking out of my head.
- 6:42And I'm thinking about everything under the sun rather than what can I do right at this moment.
- 6:47for her. Think about what would happen if this happened. Well, what's going to happen if this
- 6:52happened? And I play, you know, it's like almost the, uh, I play out every scenario that could
- 7:00happen. And usually that's not what's going to happen anyways, because my scenarios in my head
- 7:05are usually not the best. They're not the most accurate, but she told me to go get her purse
- 7:12and went and got her purse.
- 7:13And I walk into the car.
- 7:17I was saying the third step prayer.
- 7:19And part of that is, you know,
- 7:20take away my difficulties
- 7:22so victory over them
- 7:23can bear witness of those I could help.
- 7:27And that whole prayer is on page 63
- 7:29of the big book,
- 7:30if you want to look it up.
- 7:35Well, so where it says,
- 7:37you know, take away my difficulties
- 7:39so victory over them can bear witness of those I could help.
- 7:43So that moment, you know, I was like, you know, take away this.
- 7:46And, you know, what I found out in that prayer, you know,
- 7:48the difficulties is just me because I'm in the way.
- 7:52I've always been in the way.
- 7:53I still am going to be in the way probably some today.
- 7:57And, you know, I hope it's at a lighter degree,
- 8:00but, you know, I hope God uses me in a way that it's good.
- 8:07But I, so I said that prayer and, you know, immediately my brain snapped to, what are you doing?
- 8:14You know, you're, this is not about you.
- 8:16This is about her.
- 8:18And you need to be good to go be of service to her.
- 8:22And when I went in straight to be of service to her, for some reason, all the fear and every
- 8:25anxiety went away from me at that moment.
- 8:29Because my attention was put on her.
- 8:30And, you know, that's an important thought, too, because I, and I've talked about this, and, you know, we just had a hundred episode not too long ago.
- 8:42So, y'all have heard me for a hundred days talk about some of these important things that are in this program.
- 8:49And I'm not, you know, going to flip through this book, but, you know, I'll tell you on page 84 what it does say.
- 8:55It says, we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we could help.
- 8:59And that, you know, with, you know, resolutely means with determination.
- 9:02So, you know, usually for me, man, I go ahead and just, you know, turn my thoughts to someone I can help and call them.
- 9:08Send them a text.
- 9:12Try to be there for someone else.
- 9:13You know, how vital that has been to me in my life.
- 9:19You know, there's not much about, you know, me just getting better for me in this program.
- 9:25There's nothing, actually, just so you know.
- 9:28And if you want to email us and kind of go page for page in this deal, we can.
- 9:36My life depends on the constant thought of other people.
- 9:40And it says that.
- 9:43Like I said, I think it's on page 20.
- 9:48It's on the top left of the page.
- 9:49I know that.
- 9:49But it says, for the ex-problem drinker, his life depends on the constant thought of other people
- 9:56and how he may meet their needs, something of that effect.
- 10:01And so, and I'll tell you, that is true today.
- 10:04That is true to me to every degree.
- 10:08Because if I'm not thinking about my family,
- 10:10if I'm not thinking about my daughter, my son,
- 10:11or the people that I'm trying to be of service to, or my job,
- 10:16I'm thinking about me, and you know, man, I'll tell you what,
- 10:19thinking about me does.
- 10:21Thinking about only me puts me in the back of my closet,
- 10:25completely overwhelmed with life and can't function
- 10:29because that's how I've been in my life before.
- 10:33You know, I heard my sponsor talk in Alabama.
- 10:39We went to Alabama with them because we went to this thing.
- 10:46And anyways, you know, I can relate a lot to my sponsor.
- 10:51He was adopted.
- 10:51I was adopted.
- 10:53Mom's a nurse.
- 10:54My mom's a nurse.
- 10:57He attempted suicide.
- 10:58I've attempted suicide.
- 11:01You know, he said something.
- 11:02He said, you know, if you've ever been in that place, you know, it's funny now, but it's something to play with.
- 11:06You know, it's serious.
- 11:07It's serious business that it's not telling people about it, you know, that I'm thinking about this.
- 11:14No, it's the act of doing it, and it's the act of, you know, contemplating in your head for, you know, for me, at least for a long time.
- 11:24And it's a scary, scary place, and I hope that nobody has to go through that.
- 11:32But you know what?
- 11:32So when I'm out of myself, I'm able to be present.
- 11:36Because when I'm in myself, I'm not able to be present.
- 11:39I'm all thinking about all the different things of how this is going to play out, how you should act, what you should have done, this and this and this.
- 11:48But when I'm being of service, it takes me out of that.
- 11:51It takes me out of that mind state.
- 11:55I don't think I was,
- 11:59I was doing some reading or some writing this morning on,
- 12:04I'm going to start, you know,
- 12:06posting these things on this website,
- 12:08but, you know, I was doing some on the doctor's opinion and,
- 12:13you know, it says on page 15,
- 12:20it says talking about,
- 12:23sorry,
- 12:24I wasn't,
- 12:27it says many times,
- 12:30we'll start up a little bit higher,
- 12:32says I was not too well at the time,
- 12:34I was played by waves of self-pity and resentment,
- 12:37this sometimes nearly drove me back to drink,
- 12:39but I soon found that when all other measures failed,
- 12:43work with another alcoholic would save the day,
- 12:45Many times I've gone to my old hospital in despair.
- 12:49On talking to a man there, I would be amazingly lifted up and set on my feet.
- 12:54It is a design for living that works in rough going.
- 12:58Many times I go to my old hospital.
- 13:00I go to it quite frequently, actually.
- 13:04I remember I was leaving there one day, and it was best I'd be at home
- 13:08because I found out that I needed to be at home when I got home.
- 13:11But it was funny because, you know, I get up there and I go every once a month to go talk.
- 13:22And someone else had shown up up there.
- 13:26And, you know, accidentally we got scheduled on the same day.
- 13:30And, you know, I told him, I said, hey, man, you got it.
- 13:32And I left.
- 13:35Yeah, I didn't, you know, make a big deal about it.
- 13:37And then on the way home, I was, you know, I started getting this self-pity and resentment thing, you know.
- 13:42And I was like, man, you know, what's this, you know, thinking about, like, oh, I should have been the one to talk.
- 13:49And then I get a phone call from a friend.
- 13:55And I really care about this guy.
- 13:58And he called me and he goes, man, I understand.
- 14:00He was tearing up.
- 14:03He called me and, you know, he had helped this lady do something, this older lady, and helped her get into her house or whatever it was.
- 14:14And, you know, he was crying.
- 14:15He said, man, I understand about this giving thing.
- 14:17And he was crying.
- 14:18And, you know, I told him, I said, you know, man, I was kind of pissed off at the moment, you know, right before you called because I was upset about, you know, not being able to go talk.
- 14:29And, you know, but, you know, it's crazy because, you know, I was right.
- 14:32right where I was supposed to be. I was supposed to receive that phone call and I wasn't supposed
- 14:36to be up there. And that guy that got mis-scheduled with me, you know, man, maybe he had some things
- 14:41going on in his personal life, right? And he was in despair. And he went to his old hospital as well
- 14:49and he got to go share his experience of what it used to be like for him and what it's like for now.
- 14:54Maybe that helps somebody. You know, these little things can completely change the trajectory
- 15:00of someone's life in little bitty pieces
- 15:03and we don't even know.
- 15:05Because, you know, it says in the big book,
- 15:08how could I comprehend a supreme being anyhow?
- 15:14And I can't.
- 15:15And through my life, you know,
- 15:16I'm able to be of service to my family,
- 15:19to my baby, to my son,
- 15:22to the mother, to everybody in my life.
- 15:26And the more people that God allows me to put in my life,
- 15:29the more people I'm allowed to be of service to.
- 15:32And God presents these things in my life.
- 15:34They're amazing.
- 15:38And through all that, you know, I think, you know,
- 15:40I went around this whole how I do this stuff with my partner.
- 15:47But through that, my relationships,
- 15:51when I abandon myself to God and give freely of my life,
- 15:54my relationships are better than they've ever been in my life.
- 16:00ever.
- 16:02I was writing a
- 16:03I got some
- 16:04I still got tons of amends
- 16:07to make.
- 16:09You know
- 16:11I knock away at them
- 16:13and I was writing out
- 16:15a letter
- 16:17the other morning and
- 16:20yeah I put it
- 16:21you know it was interesting because
- 16:23I was writing it out
- 16:25and I told
- 16:27them you know what my book tells me
- 16:30and it tells me on page,
- 16:37it tells me, I'm sorry for the pause.
- 16:40It wasn't really, you know,
- 16:41I don't know what I'm going to say usually before I do this,
- 16:44but it says,
- 16:47simply we tell him that we will never get over drinking
- 16:50until we have done our utmost to straighten out the past.
- 16:55We are there to sweep off our side of the street
- 16:57street. And, you know, I was writing this thing out and I told them, I said, you know, man,
- 17:04it's crazy. Cause like, you know, I find myself, you know, dwelling on a lot of things and trying
- 17:11to make right a lot of things in my life that I should have just listened to my mother about
- 17:16and how the way she, the way she told, you know, told me to be. And that's, you know,
- 17:22when I'm trying to come back, I'm trying to come back to baseline today, you know, on a, you know,
- 17:27even playing that, you know, I'm allowed to function with people in this world. And, um,
- 17:34thank you guys for listening to me rant. Um, I'm really grateful and I'm grateful for Pastor Mike,
- 17:40you know, for giving us this, you know, this way to do this. Cause it's, man, it's,
- 17:47If it hasn't helped any body that listens to it, it's helped me in more than ways than I can ever explain.
- 17:53So thank you.
- 17:56I'll end this with a prayer.
- 17:57Father, teach me how to love and relate to others well.
- 18:01Through your Spirit, form in me the humility and trust needed to build strong and healthy relationships.
- 18:06Following the example of your Son.
- 18:09Amen.
- 18:10Thank you, guys.
