- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I need to talk about something.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: I went to a party last weekend and someone put on music that was quote a throwback, and it was from 2015.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: No way, that's not a throwback.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: 2015 is a throwback, Nashida.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: I have officially entered the phase of life where I'm too old to keep pretending certain things are fun.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: And I'm not talking about things like you know, skydiving or sitting on the fastest roller coaster.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: No, I never pretended that was fun, by the way.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: I don't like roller coasters.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: I mean the stuff that we're still saying yes, yes to, or like, you know, nodding when we go out to brunch with a bunch of people.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, welcome to different lives, same thoughts.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Today's episode things were too old to keep pretending are fun.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: We each brought five, no holding back.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: No holding back at all.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Let's ruin some people's Saturday plans, Shada.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Alright, number one, staying out past nine on a weeknight.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Someone invites me to let's say casual dinner.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: I say yes.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: And then at 8 45, I'm doing math on how much sleep I uh I lose if I stay for dessert.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Or, you know, it's or whether how much how sleepy I will be when I'm driving back home.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: You're doing math at the table?
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: In my head, yes.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm not present anymore.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: I'm calculating.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: And I used to be the one begging people to stay out later when I was in my 20s.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Now I'm I'm I'm the one going, okay, I have a seven-year-old and I have a 6 a.m.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: wake-up call.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: It's like seriously, she is my built-in alarm clock.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: That's so real.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: And I'm not tired because I'm old.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: I am tired because I have a tiny human who treats sleep like it's an insult.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Like she thinks like if she sleeps, let's say past 7 a.m., she thinks like that her whole day is over.
- 2:12unknown: So cute.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: But not fun.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I totally understand.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: So what about yours?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Tell me one of yours.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, so mine is lad bars.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I used to love a packed lod bar where you can't hear yourself think.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Now I walk in and immediately start looking for the exit and a place to sit down.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: You're locating the nearest chair.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: You're like you're trying to find something that's very important to you.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And I'm doing the thing where I nod at what someone's saying because I genuinely cannot hear a word of it.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I used to think that was fun.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Now I think that's a hearing test.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I keep failing on purpose.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Do you okay?
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Now that you say going to a loud bar, do you even know how long it's been since I went to a bar?
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: How long has it been?
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: I haven't been to a bar since before I gave birth.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, it wasn't that.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, we were not dancing.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: We were like literally sitting in a corner, like, you know, it's true.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Two nerds at the cafeteria and at school.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Way to put our business out there.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, first of all, I am a nerd.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: People heard me talk about Marvel movies.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: I gave Marvel movies and all the episodes that we have had so far.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I am a nerd.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: And there's nothing wrong in being a nerd.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Now, Nikki, what's your number two?
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Okay, so number two, let's just wing it group trips.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Like 10 years ago, I would go anywhere with anyone with zero plan, like spontaneous adventure.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: Now, if there's no itinerary, I get a little, you know, twitchy and my anxiety starts kicking up.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: You want the itinerary.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: I want the itinerary.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: I want to know where we eat.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: I want a backup plan for the backup plan.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: So let's say we we know where we're gonna eat at, you know, we're going to Disneyland soon.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: And we know where we're gonna eat at Disneyland because we've been there before.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: But what if we don't get a table?
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: I need a backup pan.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: I don't want to keep like, you know, walking around trying to find another restaurant with a seven-year-old who's constantly saying, I'm hungry.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: I want, I want to eat French fries, I want ice cream.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: No, I I will be way too overstimulated for that.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: But we will figure it out when we get there.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: It used to sound fun, but now it sounds like it sounds like uh event that I do not have time in my calendar for.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: So you're becoming like your mother?
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: My god, I did become like my mother.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: And but honestly, I do have to give it to my mom, the itinerary slaps.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: What about you, Shayda?
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: To give us your number too.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, so mine is dating app small talk.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: We just talked about this in the previous episode.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Go back and listen.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: So the hey, how's your week going back and forth for three days before anyone commits to a plan?
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I used to have the patience for it.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Now I want to skip straight to are we getting coffee or not?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Cut to the chase.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So cut to the chase.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: I don't need eight rounds of banter to know if there's a spark.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Just ask me out on a date, maybe to a coffee shop.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: I'm too old for the slow build.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, of course.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, you don't want something superficial.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: You want something that's like, you know, some a guy who's making the effort.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: So, Nikki, what's your number three?
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: My number three, it's gonna hit a nerve for some people.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Theme parties where you're supposed to dress up.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: I used to plan outfits like two weeks out, like a month out.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Now someone says, Oh, it's 90s theme.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: It's like a masquerade gala.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Wear something fun.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: And my honest reaction is like, you seriously think I have the mental energy to go shop for an occasion?
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Do you like it's been a while since I've bought a dress for my own birthday?
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Like, why?
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: It's like a dread.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Constant dread.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Like now I have to find the outfit, I have to find childcare, and also I do plan costumes for my daughter.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Both of you to assume that I have time to pick up a costume for myself.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: It's a miracle that I'm putting her in a costume.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: And then not only do I have to put myself in a costume, and I have to actually go and then stand around holding a drink.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: First of all, I don't drink.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: I'm I I'm not an alcohol person because half the time I'm driving and the other half I just don't like alcohol.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: But even the juice is not worth it anymore.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Or even the Diet Coke is not worth it anymore.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, I have Diet Coke at my home.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: I can be in my pajamas.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And I don't want the party.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: You can just text me a picture and say, hey, it's happening, and I'll be like, give a thumbs up.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: You just want the photo.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just want the recap.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: I just don't want the RSVP anymore.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, Shayda, tell us your third one.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Um, so I hate going places that require you to do your hair and your makeup when it's over 80.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, it's Texas.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: And that's not even with humidity.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: It is just a miserable time because you're gonna be sweating.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: All the makeup you just put on is gonna sweat right off.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: If it's an outdoor wedding, I'm not going.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: You know, the episode again, I that just shows how nerdy I am, okay?
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: The episode in Friends where Monica goes to where is it?
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: Is it Barbados?
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Yes, with her hair.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: With their hair, and then she keeps on saying, it's the humidity.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: That's me all the time.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: From like April to November, maybe.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: I just okay.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: See, that's one of the reasons why I avoid Florida and Texas in summer.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Because I will look like uh Monica 2.0 from Friends.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: I compete with Monica on a DD page.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: So you're telling me that you just don't want to go out when it's like, you know, over 80.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: It's just it's not worth it.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Over 80 is the threshold.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: It's not worth it.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And I have to be able to put my hair up.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: If I have to put my hair down, like, you know, straighten it, curl it, whatever.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: No, it's not.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna stay.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Okay, Nikki, tell us your number four.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: So my number four would be concerts where you have to stand the whole time.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: You know, general admission concerts where you stand for like, you know, four hours or you know, whatever the concert duration is.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: I used to be front row, elbows out, no problem.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Now I'm doing the math on my lower back before I even buy the ticket.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: Because all right, and you know, I have to pre-book a massage if I'm going to concert for the next day.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: So you're pricing out your your back.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: I am pricing up my spine.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: If there is no seated section, I hesitate.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I'm not going.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: I want to hear the music, but I can also re-listen to that music on Spotify.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: And I don't want to fight like honestly, a 19-year-old for a spot by the stage anymore.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: I'll watch, I'll sit back, I'll watch from the TV like a responsible adult because I know if I fight for the 19-year-old, that 19-year-old is gonna win.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: And that's a public humiliation.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Oh my, you know, I thought of going to uh Bruno Mars concert in Massachusetts that just happened recently, but then I looked at the tickets.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: There are two things that kind of throws me off nowadays.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: So one is the price.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're really expensive now.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: They're ridiculous, okay?
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: And you should have seen prices for a Beyonce or like Taylor Swift concert.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: It's just it's ridiculous, is what's it what it is.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: It's like insanity.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, I did too.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: When I was in Australia, I did.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: And she's awesome.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I'm not gonna pay that amount now.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, put on a glittery outfit like I'm going, like I'm a cheerleader with pom-poms in my hand and stand for like what four or five hours and then again take getting your car out the parking lot.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the two the wait.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: The wait?
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: I heard that people it took some people like three and a half hours to get out of parking lot after Taylor Swift concert at Foxborough.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: I would rather just fall asleep in the parking lot.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: I'll take a sleeping bag and then just sleep.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: All right, Shayna, what's your number four?
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: So my number four is staying out past last call, trying to squeeze more fun out of a night that's already pink two hours ago.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: I used to chase that.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Now I can feel the exact moment and night is over, and I want to leave right now.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: So you know when the vibe is not vibing anymore.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: I know when the vibe has left the building and everyone else is still pretending it hasn't.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: I'm not doing the desperate extra hour anymore.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: I'll go home happy instead of staying miserable.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: You'll be happy in your pajamas, makeup off, hair.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Showered.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: Showered.
- 12:21unknown: Yeah.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Watching your phone or you know your laptop.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: What's your number five?
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: So, okay.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: This is I hope my mom doesn't disone me after this.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: Uh oh.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: So my number five.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: This one's very, it's it's this one's very petty.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: It's it's an abomination, is what it is.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Spicy food challenges.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Someone orders, let's say, you know, we go to an Indian restaurant and someone orders like um a a biryani.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: My South Asian friends can relate to it, a biryani.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: And they say, like, I and obviously I look like an Indian.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: I anyone can tell me.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Like, I'll they'll look at me and be like, oh yeah, she's from India.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: You know, you know, and then if I order a biryani, and I when the guy asks me like mild, medium, spicy, and without even hesitation, I'll say mild.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: And then he looks at me like I've literally offended him.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: There's my, you know, my family, my brother, my ma.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: They all eat spicy food, and then I'm over here, you know, trying to hold on to that, you know, no spice dare.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: Because that's not a dare.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: That's my dinner.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: I don't want to be on fire internally by eating spicy food, you know?
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're not like impressed by that anymore.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: I'm not impressed, and I'm too old for that.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Stomach consequences the next day.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: I will take the mild version and also I won my dignity.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Thank you very much.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: So, you know, funny thing happened when I went to India.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: We um, as a family, like, you know, my cousins, their kids, my my mom, dad, my, you know, my my aunts, my uncles, we all we all went to this Indian restaurant.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, obviously in India you go to an Indian restaurant.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: You know, really?
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: We go to a big restaurant, and then they ordered this appetizer.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: It's kind of like a fried lentil crispy thing.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: It comes with uh um a dip as well.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: And I didn't dip it.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I didn't dip it yet in the dip.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I took a bite, it had green chilies in it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: And I I did not eat it, Shayda.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: And then I didn't touch it.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: And they're like, Why are you not eating?
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: And I even because it's spicy, but then my cousin's son, who is six months younger than Adya.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, he ate it?
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: He ate it, he loved it.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: I felt so insulted, but you know what?
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: I would take that insult, then the insult that my stomach is gonna throw at me the next day.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: So I did not eat it.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: So what's your number five?
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, so my number five, and every one of my friends knows this, is group chats that require response.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: I am so bad at responding to group chats, you would think that I didn't have my phone nearby me 90% of the day.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: You're talking to me.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, so the thing is the the like I love my friends.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Like I'm in a lot of group chats, and like the community love that, right?
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: But sometimes I'm in a meeting and then I look 47 text messages later, and I just can't like keep up.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: The mess, like the conversation has moved on, and so there's no way for me to catch up.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: You just want the recap version of it, like you know, but you know, at Netflix, it just shows the re recap and you skip intro.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: I just need the recap.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: So I actually do like one of my neighbors when we go on walks, she's usually great at recapping for me.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: It's like, so this is what so-and-so said, and this is what so-and-so said.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Well, you get all the tea.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: But then I do feel bad, but I think my friends, my close friends have known that this is a thing.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: So if I go into a group chat, shit is not really gonna be responding.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: I sometimes thumbs things up, but that's only because like I didn't see it in the first hour, and so I feel like I need to participate.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: You know, it kind of funny because I'm in a lot of family group chats, because you know, we have family all over the world.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Like, I have family in India, I have family in my Dubai, I have family here.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: So, and we have like a group chat, and there's like every time, every morning I wake up because it was when it's midnight here, the morning has already happened in India, and there's like 57 or like 58 messages.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: And then my mom calls me as soon as I get my coffee.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: My mom calls me and she goes, Did you see that message?
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, What message?
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Because I'm I'm not gonna open that first thing in the morning.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: No, the first thing in the morning I have to get my daughter out of the house to her school bus.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: Like Yeah, and you have to like actually read the messages, right?
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Like, and then she goes, Oh, yeah, definitely read it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: And I will be like, Okay, I'm gonna read it, but just tell me what happened.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: And then I have like a one-hour call with my mom because I get all the tea.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: You know, she gives me the gossip.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: She is my gossip girl in India, you know.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: But then it's so hard, especially with the group texts.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: I don't and also they make plans in these group texts, especially like my moms and my aunts and uncles, my cousins, they live close by.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: And I get so jealous sometimes because you know, I I kind of miss that.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: You have FOMO.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: I have FOMO.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: I wonder where uh my daughter gets it from.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: She gets it from me.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
