- 0:40This morning's reading comes from the Gospel of Mark chapter
- 0:436. Starting in verse 30, the
- 0:47apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him
- 0:51all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, let's go off by
- 0:56ourselves to a quiet place and rest a while.
- 0:59He said this because there were so many people coming and going
- 1:03that Jesus and his apostles didn't even have time to eat.
- 1:08So they left by boat for a quiet place where they could be alone.
- 1:12But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people
- 1:17from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of
- 1:21them. Jesus saw the huge crowd as he
- 1:25stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because
- 1:28they were like sheep without a shepherd.
- 1:31So he began teaching them many things.
- 1:36Late in the afternoon, his disciples came to him and said,
- 1:39this is a remote place and it's already getting late.
- 1:43Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and
- 1:46villages and buy something to eat.
- 1:49But Jesus said you feed them with what they asked.
- 1:53We'd have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food
- 1:56for all these people. How much bread do you have?
- 2:01He asked. Go and find out.
- 2:03They came back and reported we only have 5 loaves of bread and
- 2:06two fish. Then Jesus told the disciples to
- 2:10have the people sit down in groups of the on the green
- 2:13grass. So they sat down in groups of 50
- 2:17or 100. Jesus took the five loaves and
- 2:21two fish, looked up toward heaven and blessed them.
- 2:25Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread
- 2:28to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people.
- 2:32He also divided the fish for everyone to share.
- 2:36They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward the
- 2:38disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftover bread and fish.
- 2:43A total of 5000 men and their families were fed immediately
- 2:47after this. Jesus insists insisted that his
- 2:51disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to
- 2:57Bethsaida while he sent the people home.
- 3:02After telling everyone goodbye, he went up into the hills by
- 3:05himself to pray. This is the word of God for the
- 3:08people of God. Thanks be to God.
- 3:12Amen. Thanks, Tim, for reading for us
- 3:16this morning. All right, kids, you are invited
- 3:19to head to children's church, Miss Jennifer.
- 3:23All right, great. Well, imagine with me, if you
- 3:35would, what it might feel like to have people clamoring for you
- 3:42all the time, All right? People at work clamoring for
- 3:47your attention to some matter. People within your family coming
- 3:52to you with needs that they want you to meet.
- 3:57People in your social circles who expect more of your energy
- 4:03than you have to give. People who are challenging you
- 4:08in public and questioning your character.
- 4:15You with me. All right?
- 4:16You're, you're feeling worn down and stressed out, stretched
- 4:22thin. And then on top of it all, you
- 4:27get bad news, right? There's an unexpected diagnosis.
- 4:33You or your spouse loses a job, plans you'd been looking forward
- 4:39to fell apart, or or maybe someone you love passes away.
- 4:44Suddenly it can all feel so overwhelming, like you're
- 4:53treading water right, and just trying to keep your head above
- 4:57the waves that just keep breaking, knowing the next one
- 5:02could be the one that pulls you under.
- 5:07You able to imagine something along those lines?
- 5:12Do you know that Jesus felt overwhelmed too?
- 5:18That there were times when the demands that were placed on him
- 5:24felt like too much? That's where the story today
- 5:30finds Jesus, right. Jesus has been healing people
- 5:34left and right, sometimes even whole towns or villages,
- 5:39gathering and bringing their sick to have Jesus touch them
- 5:44and heal them. He's been confronting the
- 5:47demonic and setting demonized people free.
- 5:51He's been in conflict with the religious leaders.
- 5:55They're they're challenging Jesus and questioning his
- 5:59character, even going so far to say that Jesus was drawing his
- 6:05power from the Prince of demons who was possessing him.
- 6:11His family doesn't understand what he's doing.
- 6:14And we're putting demands on him.
- 6:16He's been teaching crowds of people in addition to these 12
- 6:21apprentices that he's called to be with him and follow him.
- 6:25And then he goes to his hometown where he's ridiculed as the
- 6:31illegitimate son of Mary and Joseph.
- 6:35And according to Luke, there in Nazareth, they even tried to
- 6:39throw him off a Cliff. Talk about a rough day at the
- 6:44office. All right.
- 6:48And then, then Jesus finds out that his cousin John the Baptist
- 6:56has been killed. It's overwhelming.
- 7:02It's too much. So what does Jesus do in a
- 7:08moment like this? How does he respond to the
- 7:12situations and the circumstances that are swirling around him and
- 7:17the emotions that were surely swirling within him?
- 7:24What's he do? He calls a time out right with
- 7:30when everything felt like too much to handle, when he and the
- 7:36disciples didn't even have a moment of time to eat.
- 7:42Jesus gets away from it all. He he goes to to make some time
- 7:47to be with the Father. Or that's almost what he does,
- 7:53right? Because here in Mark 6, the
- 7:55passage Tim read for us this morning, it tells us that Jesus
- 7:59didn't just go off alone by himself.
- 8:02He invited the 12 to disappear with him for a while.
- 8:09He said, let's go off by ourselves to a quiet place and
- 8:14rest a while. You see, in this apprenticeship
- 8:19to Jesus, he wants to teach these followers about the
- 8:24rhythms that are necessary to sustain a life lived with an
- 8:30orientation toward others. All right, Matthew, Mark and
- 8:37Luke place this story shortly after the sending out of the 12
- 8:42apostles, which we spoke about a couple weeks ago.
- 8:45And and Mark tells us right here at the beginning of the story
- 8:48that Jesus's invitation comes not just on on the heels of the
- 8:52news about John the Baptist, but upon the apostles return from
- 8:57their mission trip, right? They're telling them all about
- 9:01what they had seen and done and experienced.
- 9:04But Jesus wanted to teach them about the importance of quiet
- 9:10and rest in the midst of the busyness and the pains of life.
- 9:18But this isn't just a teachable moment for Jesus and the 12
- 9:24right? It's, it's more than a lesson in
- 9:28this invitation. Jesus is inviting those 12 men
- 9:35into his inner life, right? He's he's pulling back the
- 9:41curtain, so to speak, so they can see how he sustains his life
- 9:47of self giving love because it's in the quiet solitude that Jesus
- 9:55connects with the Father. And this isn't the first or only
- 10:00time that we see this in Jesus's life in in Mark chapter one, we
- 10:07read this little vignette of Jesus's life.
- 10:14Sorry I didn't put a bookmark there.
- 10:18Mark one beginning in verse 32. It says that evening after
- 10:25sunset, many sick and demon possessed people were brought to
- 10:29Jesus. The whole town gathered at the
- 10:32door to watch. So Jesus healed many people who
- 10:37were sick with various diseases. He cast out many demons, but
- 10:42because the demons knew who he was, he did not allow them to
- 10:45speak. That's the evening before
- 10:50Daybreak. The next morning Jesus got up
- 10:55and he went out to an isolated place to pray.
- 10:59Later Simon and the others went out to find him, and when they
- 11:02found him they said everyone is looking for you.
- 11:08But Jesus replied, we must go to the other towns as well, and I
- 11:12will preach to them too. That is why I came.
- 11:18So he travelled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in
- 11:21the synagogues and casting out demons.
- 11:26After a full day of ministry that that even stretched into
- 11:33the evening. Healing and deliverance, all
- 11:37these things going on, Jesus chooses to get up early and he
- 11:44goes off to be alone with the Father.
- 11:49How many people here are morning people?
- 11:52I can't raise my hand because it's not me, right?
- 11:56But Jesus gets up early before Daybreak.
- 12:02He goes to to spend that time alone with God.
- 12:07This was how he sustained his ministry and it's how he learned
- 12:13what it was that God wanted him to do day by day by day.
- 12:23And notice that when the disciples finally find him,
- 12:26right? When they say everyone is
- 12:28looking for you, which is a great thing for a person trying
- 12:33to build a following, right? But instead of using this
- 12:38opportunity to build his platform to, to further himself,
- 12:42he just says, OK, that's great, we're moving on, right?
- 12:48Because that's what he heard from the Father in the quiet
- 12:53place. The point is that Jesus's
- 12:56response to the overwhelm of life here in Mark 6th, his
- 13:02desire to to get away for some quiet rest.
- 13:06It's not an isolated event and and it's not an on the fly
- 13:11innovation for the sake of the 12 who have just come back from
- 13:15this mission trip. And they're so excited, but
- 13:17they're also so tired. Where Jesus lived out of these
- 13:24spiritual practices, He had a rhythm to his life, right?
- 13:31Things like practicing Sabbath and prayer solitude, right?
- 13:38Jesus knew that in order to know what the Father wanted him doing
- 13:45and where he was supposed to do them, even Jesus had to
- 13:49cultivate an intimacy with the Father.
- 13:53Remember, Jesus was God, but he was also human, right?
- 13:59And and if he wasn't holding on to his equality with God like
- 14:04something to be grasped, like Philippians 2 says things, these
- 14:10weren't just things that he knew because he was God, right?
- 14:14He had to listen to God and he, he needed the strength to do the
- 14:22ministry and he knew it didn't just come from himself.
- 14:25He had to be filled and empowered.
- 14:28And that's where Jesus's rhythm of life, his spiritual
- 14:32practices, they they come into play.
- 14:36This was how Jesus sustained his life of self giving love.
- 14:42But as we read in the story, despite, despite Jesus's best
- 14:48intentions to model these spiritual practices and and to
- 14:53invite the 12 into his rhythm of life, the crowds noticed where
- 15:00he's headed. They see him gay in the boat,
- 15:04they know where that boat, which direction it's headed, and they
- 15:08follow along. They end up on another side of
- 15:12the lake when Jesus lands there. And Jesus heart, when he sees
- 15:16them, he's filled with compassion, right?
- 15:21He recognizes how hungry the people are for true leadership
- 15:26and true shepherding. And so Jesus chooses to teach
- 15:30the crowds rather than teaching the lesson he had planned for
- 15:35the 12. And eventually, late in the day,
- 15:38the disciples began to get hungry.
- 15:41I mean, they began to notice that the people were getting
- 15:45hungry and and they weren't close to any towns or villages
- 15:50where they could send the people to get food.
- 15:53So they tell Jesus to send the crowds away to find some food
- 15:57for themselves. And Jesus realizes there's a
- 16:03different kind of training opportunity here before them,
- 16:08right? So Jesus turns to the 12.
- 16:10He's heard their their request and he says you feed them, you
- 16:18give them something to eat. I think Jesus believed that the
- 16:24disciples should be able to handle this by now, right?
- 16:28Remember, they just came back from their mission trip where
- 16:31they had reached out and touched people and seen them healed, and
- 16:35they had cast out demons from people.
- 16:38They'd proclaimed the good news that the Kingdom of God had come
- 16:42near to them. But apparently the 12 hadn't
- 16:48quite gotten it yet. They hadn't quite learned the
- 16:53lesson yet because their response is that it would take
- 16:59months worth of pay. 200 days wages is what it says. 6 1/2
- 17:06months of daily salary to buy enough food for everyone, if
- 17:13there was even somewhere around for them to buy that much food.
- 17:18So instead instead, Jesus decides to to walk them through
- 17:24it step by step, right? He asks them, how much food do
- 17:30you have? I can imagine the 12 kind of
- 17:35looking at each other, whispering to one another, did
- 17:39you bring any food? Was it my turn to plan the menu?
- 17:44Did you go grocery shopping? And Jesus just rolling his eyes
- 17:50as he says, go and see what you can find, see what's out there.
- 17:54And eventually they come back right with the five small loaves
- 17:58and two fish. John tells us it was it was just
- 18:02a little boy's brown bag lunch. Jesus takes that little bit that
- 18:08was offered. He gives thanks to the Father
- 18:14and he proceeds to make it more than enough for all the people.
- 18:21The amazing thing to me is he still does it in the hands of
- 18:28those 12 disciples, right? The ones that Jesus told to to
- 18:34to give the crowd something to eat are still the ones who gave
- 18:40the crowd something to eat, even though they didn't have any idea
- 18:45how that was even possible. Jesus broke the bread and he
- 18:51broke the fish and he gave it to them, but the fish and the
- 18:56loaves, they, they, they multiplied in the disciples
- 19:00hands as they're handing it out. And then after dinner, they say,
- 19:09let's, let's send the crowds home.
- 19:12And Jesus is now too tired to even teach the disciples about
- 19:17solitude and prayer. And so he sends them back across
- 19:21the lake in the boat. But Jesus, Jesus still makes
- 19:29time to get alone with the Father.
- 19:33He didn't allow the interruption of the crowds to become a
- 19:37disruption to his relationship with the Father.
- 19:44He didn't allow that interruption of the crowds to
- 19:49become a disruption to his relationship with the Father and
- 19:56friends. If we are going to follow Jesus,
- 20:00and if we're going to do the greater things that Jesus told
- 20:03us his followers would do, we have to learn to believe Jesus's
- 20:08words. And we have to learn to follow
- 20:12His example. We have to develop a sustaining
- 20:18intimacy with God that is a first priority in our lives.
- 20:27Anybody feeling overwhelmed these days?
- 20:31You don't have to actually raise your hands, but are you feeling
- 20:34overwhelmed? There are days this year when
- 20:39I've felt overwhelmed. Reality is, it's not really a
- 20:45question of whether we're going to feel overwhelmed.
- 20:50The question is, what are we going to do when we feel
- 20:55overwhelmed? Are you making time to be with
- 21:02the Father? Are you making that a priority?
- 21:06Are you spending time each day reading and meditating on
- 21:09scripture? Are you getting up early, even
- 21:13if you have to before your day begins to pray?
- 21:19Are you making time to be alone with God?
- 21:22These were non negotiables for Jesus.
- 21:28They were non negotiables for Jesus, especially when things
- 21:35are overwhelming. Maybe if if Jesus needed to make
- 21:39these practices and rhythms a priority, we might need to as
- 21:45well. Maybe, maybe Martin Luther, the
- 21:50great Reformer is quoted as saying, I have so much to do
- 21:54that I shall spend the first 3 hours in prayer.
- 22:01Or John Wesley, similarly, he said, I have so much to do that
- 22:05I must spend several hours in prayer before I'm able to do it.
- 22:14We would love to have the impact of a Wesley or a Luther.
- 22:22Few of us are willing, though, to get up at 4:00 AM to pray
- 22:27like they did. But let me also say, this isn't
- 22:35a silver bullet, right? Solitude, prayer, scripture,
- 22:40quiet, rest, all these disciplines that we can build
- 22:43into our lives. They don't take away the things
- 22:47that overwhelm us. They don't take away the the
- 22:52needy children or the naggy parents or the unexpected
- 22:57situations, but they shift our perspective about them.
- 23:05God wants to shape the way that we see these things.
- 23:09He wants to to strengthen us to face them.
- 23:13He wants to remind us of who we are and whose we are, but they
- 23:22don't necessarily take away those circumstances.
- 23:29If we continued reading the next passage in Mark chapter 6, we'd
- 23:33see that that this story is is exactly how the disciples end up
- 23:39on the lake in the midst of the wind and the waves.
- 23:44Remember the story when Jesus walks on the water?
- 23:50It's always blown my mind that Mark tells us that Jesus
- 23:54intended to go past them. He intended to walk right on by
- 24:02while they struggled with the wind and the waves.
- 24:07Apparently they hadn't learned the lesson from the storm in
- 24:09Mark chapter 4 yet either. But when they see Jesus and
- 24:18they're terrified and he sees their terror, he chose to
- 24:23respond to their need as well. Fresh off his time alone with
- 24:30the Father, Jesus gets in the boat and immediately the wind
- 24:36and the waves stop. The 12 were amazed because they
- 24:42still didn't understand. And I think sometimes we see
- 24:48someone going through something incredibly difficult, an illness
- 24:52or a loss or fill in the blank, you know, the difficult things
- 24:56that come at us in life. We see someone going through
- 25:00that and we're amazed at the way they're able to walk through it,
- 25:08how they handle it with joy and peace and hope.
- 25:14But we're amazed because we still haven't understood,
- 25:20because we still haven't learned the lesson that it's intimacy
- 25:24with God that's meant to be the source of our power and our
- 25:29strength, our love and our compassion, our joy and our
- 25:34peace, and even our very lives. And so this morning we have an
- 25:42opportunity as we move into our celebration of Holy Communion,
- 25:48we have an opportunity to meet with God.
- 25:53Maybe this morning you need to confess to him the other things
- 25:59that you've looked to to help you cope with the stress of
- 26:03life. Maybe this morning you need to
- 26:08to confess to God the the distance that you've allowed
- 26:12into your relationship with him and and you need to ask him to
- 26:16draw you close. Maybe this morning you've never
- 26:23experienced the kind of intimacy with God that we're talking
- 26:27about. You need to tell God that you
- 26:30want it. You want that kind of dependent
- 26:34relationship with Him, and you're deciding to seek Him in
- 26:38the place of quiet rest. But as we come to communion,
- 26:47Jesus wants to commune with us. Will you push in to meet with
- 26:55him? We tell him that you need him
- 27:03because if you do, he won't pass us by.
