- 1:42Speaker 4: his enlistment as United States Army Air Force flight instructor,
- 1:45Speaker 4: one of the screen's favorite young players, Mr.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Robert Cummings. So with the.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Strange events which befell the young Californian named Jimmy Barton
- 1:54Speaker 4: in The Dead of the Night, and with the performance
- 1:57Speaker 4: of Robert Cummings, we again hope to keep you in suspense.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Helen and I had never been apart since our folks died.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Never before that summer when I got a job up
- 2:13Speaker 5: at Lake Arrowhead. She was supposed to go with me,
- 2:16Speaker 5: wait on tables or something. It was to be our vacations.
- 2:20Speaker 5: but at the last minute she decided to stay in L.A.
- 2:22Speaker 5: She figured her boyfriend Steve might be coming home on
- 2:25Speaker 5: a furlough. I should have known better. My sister was
- 2:28Speaker 5: such a kid, but I let her talk me into it,
- 2:31Speaker 5: and I left her there alone. That was the beginning
- 2:34Speaker 5: of the whole thing. That's when she met him, Phil Armstrong.
- 2:39Speaker 5: If I hadn't gone away that summer, I guess Phil
- 2:42Speaker 5: would be alive today. All during the time that I
- 2:48Speaker 5: was gone... Helen didn't write much, and what letters I
- 2:51Speaker 5: did get didn't seem natural. So I was anxious to
- 2:54Speaker 5: finish my job and get home. I expected her to
- 2:56Speaker 5: be at the bus station, but she wasn't. And when
- 2:59Speaker 5: I got to the apartment, I could hear someone moving inside.
- 3:02Speaker 5: The door was locked, so I knocked.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Helen?
- 3:07Speaker 6: Who is it?
- 3:07Speaker 3: It's me. Jimmy? Yeah, open the door.
- 3:11Speaker 7: Oh, Jimmy. Yes, it.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Is.
- 3:15Speaker 7: Hi, honey.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Since when have you taken to locking the door in
- 3:17Speaker 3: the day to... Helen. Helen. What did you do to yourself?
- 3:21Speaker 3: Your face. Were you in an accident?
- 3:24Speaker 6: I fell, Jimmy. I fell and I hurt myself.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Well, your eyes swollen shut. Let me look at it.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Jimmy, I have something to tell you.
- 3:31Speaker 3: What are these suitcases doing here?
- 3:33Speaker 6: You and I are going away, Jimmy. We've got to
- 3:35Speaker 6: get out of here. I packed everything.
- 3:37Speaker 5: We're going no place till you tell me what this
- 3:38Speaker 5: is all about.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Well, Jimmy, while you were gone, I got married. Married?
- 3:46Speaker 3: You mean Steve was here on his furlough?
- 3:48Speaker 6: No, Jimmy. Not to Steve.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Not.
- 3:50Speaker 3: But you were engaged to him.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Yes, I know. I got a letter from him right
- 3:54Speaker 6: after you left. He married someone he met where he
- 3:57Speaker 6: was stationed.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Oh, Helen. Gee, I.
- 4:00Speaker 6: I was pretty upset, Jimmy, and that's when I met
- 4:02Speaker 6: Phil Armstrong.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Oh, but gee, I think you might have... I don't
- 4:06Speaker 3: even know the guy.
- 4:07Speaker 6: No, neither did I. I was unhappy.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Oh, you just don't go off and marry someone you
- 4:13Speaker 3: don't know.
- 4:13Speaker 6: That's what I did, Jimmy. Now we've got to get
- 4:15Speaker 6: out of here.
- 4:16Speaker 8: Huh?
- 4:16Speaker 3: Well, but why?
- 4:17Speaker 6: Because there's been trouble.
- 4:19Speaker 3: What kind of trouble?
- 4:20Speaker 6: I'm afraid, Jimmy. He's terrible. He takes something. I don't
- 4:24Speaker 6: know what. But sometimes he's... He's crazy.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Helen.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Yes?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Your face. You didn't fall.
- 4:36Speaker 9: No.
- 4:37Speaker 3: He did that. I'll... I'll kill him.
- 4:41Speaker 6: He'll kill you. That's what I mean. That's why we've
- 4:44Speaker 6: got to get away.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Well, you can get a divorce, can't you?
- 4:46Speaker 6: He'd threaten me if I even tried to get one.
- 4:47Speaker 3: We'll put him under a peace bond.
- 4:48Speaker 6: What good would a peace bond be, Jimmy, if he
- 4:51Speaker 6: killed one of us?
- 4:56Speaker 5: So I let her talk me into running away. I
- 4:58Speaker 5: guess I shouldn't have, but I knew that if I
- 5:01Speaker 5: saw him after what he'd done to her... Well, anyhow,
- 5:04Speaker 5: I saved my salary and I had some gas coupons.
- 5:07Speaker 5: We didn't know where we were going, but we started out.
- 5:09Speaker 6: I don't know what he'll do when he finds I've gone.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Helen, don't you think we ought to go to the police?
- 5:15Speaker 6: Oh, I'm afraid, Jimmy. I know him. I know what
- 5:17Speaker 6: he'd do if he found out we'd reported him.
- 5:19Speaker 3: But they'd protect us, Helen. They'd protect us.
- 5:22Speaker 10: What if he got to us before they got to him?
- 5:27Speaker 3: And she looked so frightened, I thought it best to
- 5:30Speaker 3: let her do it her way.
- 5:31Speaker 5: We got to Santa Monica that night and we stopped
- 5:33Speaker 5: at a motel near the water. Well, a week slipped
- 5:36Speaker 5: by and Helen seemed to be forgetting. She didn't jump
- 5:39Speaker 5: every time someone knocked at the door. And she began
- 5:42Speaker 5: to get a nice tan. I managed to get a job.
- 5:44Speaker 5: It was at McGuffey's, Potluck Gallery, and one of the
- 5:46Speaker 5: shooting concessions on the pier. Then one night late, as
- 5:51Speaker 5: I came.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Home from work, I heard voices coming from our apartment.
- 5:55Speaker 5: I knew who it was, and I knew that from
- 5:58Speaker 5: what Helen had told me, it would be foolish for
- 5:59Speaker 5: me to go in unarmed. So I ran back to
- 6:01Speaker 5: the shooting concession. It didn't take long, but when I
- 6:08Speaker 5: got back, the lights were out, and the sound of
- 6:11Speaker 5: voices was gone. I tried the door.
- 6:18Speaker 3: It was very dark.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And then my foot struck something soft and heavy on
- 6:22Speaker 5: the floor. I snapped on the switch, and the room
- 6:26Speaker 5: was flooded with light. And I looked down into a
- 6:29Speaker 5: dead man's face.
- 6:30Speaker 11: The End.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Tonight for suspense, Roma Wines are bringing you a star, Mr.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Robert Cummings, whom you've heard in the prologue to The
- 6:46Speaker 4: Dead of the Night by Mel Dinelli. Tonight's tale of suspense.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yes, it is true that our own wonderful vineyard country
- 7:02Speaker 2: in California produces in Roma... Wines that discriminating people in

- 7:15Speaker 2: mere pennies a glassful. Daily with your meals or when
- 7:18Speaker 2: entertaining or any time, you can delight yourself and your

- 7:26Speaker 2: traditions perfected by modern knowledge. For a treat you are
- 7:30Speaker 2: certain to enjoy, place on the table with dinner tomorrow
- 7:33Speaker 2: night A cool bottle of hearty, rich red Roma California Burgundy.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It doesn't matter what the meal is or what kind
- 7:40Speaker 2: of glasses you use to serve Roma. It's good in
- 7:43Speaker 2: any glass with any meal. Your family, your guests, will
- 7:48Speaker 2: find new pleasure in even the simplest foods. For Roma
- 7:52Speaker 2: wine makes any meal a feast at only pennies a glass.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Try it yourself tomorrow. Ask your dealer for R-O-M-A, Roma wine.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Remember.
- 8:04Speaker 2: More Americans enjoy Roma than any other wine.
- 8:10Speaker 9: And now it is with pleasure that we bring back
- 8:12Speaker 9: to our soundstage Robert Cummings, who, as young Jimmy Barton,
- 8:16Speaker 9: resumes his narrative concerning the death of a brother-in-law in
- 8:19Speaker 9: The Dead of the Night, a tale well calculated to
- 8:22Speaker 9: keep you in suspense.
- 8:24Speaker 7: The Dead of the.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Night It's funny how in the biggest, the most important,
- 8:37Speaker 5: the most terrifying moments of your whole life, you remember
- 8:40Speaker 5: little tiny insignificant things.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I remember that I set my alarm. It was to
- 8:44Speaker 3: go off at five o'clock.
- 8:45Speaker 5: I'd set it to wake me up that afternoon. And
- 8:48Speaker 5: a bird started to chatter outside as I stood there
- 8:51Speaker 5: shivering with cold and terror, looking down at that dead
- 8:54Speaker 5: man's face. Although I'd never seen him alive, I knew
- 9:00Speaker 5: this was Phil, her husband. There was a deep gash
- 9:04Speaker 5: over his eye, and the blood still flowed from it
- 9:07Speaker 5: onto the floor.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I stepped over him, and I ran into the bedroom. Helen! Helen!
- 9:14Speaker 3: But there was no one in the bedroom, nor in
- 9:16Speaker 3: the kitchen. And then I heard the front door open.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Jimmy!
- 9:24Speaker 3: Close that door, Helen.
- 9:25Speaker 7: Oh, Jimmy!
- 9:26Speaker 3: Close it, do you hear me?
- 9:28Speaker 11: Be quiet.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Turn the lights out.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Be quiet, I tell you.
- 9:33Speaker 6: Oh, Jimmy, what have I let you in for?
- 9:36Speaker 3: Stay where you are.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Don't move, Ellen.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Who is it?
- 9:39Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Keep quiet.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Jimmy!
- 9:43Speaker 6: Oh, Jimmy, it's Mrs.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Gordon.
- 9:46Speaker 11: Is she going to unlock the door?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Oh, just a minute, Mrs.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Gordon.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I'll get something on.
- 9:52Speaker 7: Jimmy, what's going on in there? All the cats have
- 9:55Speaker 7: been complaining.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Just some friends of mine, Mrs. Gordon. They were having
- 9:59Speaker 3: a party. They're gone now.
- 10:01Speaker 7: Jimmy Barton, you should be ashamed of yourself. Now open
- 10:04Speaker 7: this door. I want to talk to you.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Well, I'm not dressed. I was taking a shower.
- 10:08Speaker 7: Well, slip something on.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Well, I'm tired. I just was going to bed.
- 10:12Speaker 7: Jimmy, I told you I wanted to talk to you.
- 10:15Speaker 7: Now will you open this door?
- 10:16Speaker 6: Here's a passkey, Jimmy.
- 10:17Speaker 4: All right.
- 10:18Speaker 3: All right, Mrs. Gordon. Just let me get some clothes on.
- 10:21Speaker 7: I'll give you two minutes.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I didn't know what to do. I knew she was
- 10:26Speaker 3: determined to come in. Mrs.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Gordon was a nosy old woman. She meant well. She'd
- 10:30Speaker 5: taken it upon herself to mother Helen and me. She
- 10:33Speaker 5: was always coming into the apartment with her pots of
- 10:35Speaker 5: jam and her bowls of soup. I knew no matter
- 10:37Speaker 5: what I said, nothing would stop her.
- 10:40Speaker 9: What'll we do, Jimmy?
- 10:41Speaker 6: We got about a minute left.
- 10:42Speaker 11: Helen!
- 10:43Speaker 1: Helen!
- 10:44Speaker 3: Take him by the feet.
- 10:44Speaker 9: No.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Helen, take him by the feet.
- 10:46Speaker 6: It's no use. It's no use.
- 10:50Speaker 3: We started half dragging, half carrying him towards the bedroom.
- 10:53Speaker 3: The rug slipping along the floor as we moved. We'd
- 10:57Speaker 3: just gotten into the bedroom and then.
- 11:00Speaker 7: Time's up, Jimmy. And as long as your good mother
- 11:02Speaker 7: isn't here to look after you, I'm going to myself.
- 11:04Speaker 6: We can't leave him here. She might come into the bedroom.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Quick, the bathroom.
- 11:08Speaker 6: Jimmy, where are you? What if she comes in here?
- 11:11Speaker 3: Pull back those shower curtains.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Jimmy, we can't.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Don't argue. Pull them back.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Jimmy, I can't get his legs in.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Here, I'll double them up.
- 11:22Speaker 9: There.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Pull the curtains together, quick.
- 11:24Speaker 7: Jimmy, what's been going on in here? Why, look at
- 11:29Speaker 7: my rugs.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Has there been a fire? Just a minute, Mrs.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Gordon. Jimmy, what's on this floor? And on this gas heater?
- 11:36Speaker 6: Is this floor? Jimmy, Jimmy.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Get me a razor out of the medicine chest.
- 11:41Speaker 6: What are you going to do?
- 11:43Speaker 3: Never mind. Do stay here.
- 11:47Speaker 7: I'm coming, Mrs.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Gordon.
- 11:51Speaker 6: Well, just as I suspected. You've been frightened. And you've
- 11:56Speaker 6: hurt yourself. Now let me see your hand.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Oh, it isn't bad, Mrs. Gordon.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Oh, no wonder you didn't want me to come in.
- 12:03Speaker 6: Where's Helen?
- 12:04Speaker 5: She's out. She hasn't been here all evening.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Well, let's look at that hand.
- 12:08Speaker 3: It isn't bad, Mrs. Gordon, really.
- 12:09Speaker 6: You let me see that hand.
- 12:10Speaker 7: There.
- 12:13Speaker 6: Why, Jimmy, this is a bad gash. Have you disinfected it?
- 12:16Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I have.
- 12:17Speaker 6: Well, let me bandage it for you.
- 12:18Speaker 3: But this towel's all right.
- 12:20Speaker 6: It's not all right. Where are your bandages and things?
- 12:22Speaker 6: In the bathroom?
- 12:23Speaker 3: No, no. I mean, I don't have any.
- 12:26Speaker 8: Now, you're just saying that, Jimmy Barton, because you don't
- 12:28Speaker 8: want to be bandaged. You're not fooling me. I'm going
- 12:31Speaker 8: right into the bathroom and getting... No, not the bath.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I mean, I don't have any.
- 12:36Speaker 6: Well, I'll just see for myself.
- 12:37Speaker 3: No, no, Mrs. Gordon.
- 12:41Speaker 6: Jimmy, why, you drip blood all over this floor. Here.
- 12:45Speaker 6: Let's look in this medicine closet. Ah, there, I knew it.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Here's some tape and some gauze, too.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Mrs. Gordon, can't we just do this in the living room?
- 12:56Speaker 8: No, we'll do it right here. Now, here's some alcohol.
- 13:00Speaker 8: Come on, put your hand over.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Here.
- 13:05Speaker 5: We stood there, and she bandaged me, and I kept
- 13:07Speaker 5: wondering where Helen had gone. And then I saw the
- 13:10Speaker 5: shower curtain move slightly, and I knew. For a moment,
- 13:13Speaker 5: I thought Mrs. Gordon had seen it, too.
- 13:17Speaker 6: Jimmy, just look at that shower curtain.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Yes.
- 13:21Speaker 6: Goodness, you smeared that with blood, too. Well, I'd better
- 13:25Speaker 6: clean things up for you before Helen gets home. Why,
- 13:28Speaker 6: you'll scare the life out of me.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I'll clean it up, Mrs.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Gordon.
- 13:30Speaker 3: You've done enough.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Thanks very much for taking care of this hand.
- 13:32Speaker 6: Well, all right. If you don't want me to. Now,
- 13:36Speaker 6: you'd better get some sleep. I'll see you in the morning.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Good night, Jimmy.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Good night, Mrs.
- 13:40Speaker 6: Gordon.
- 13:41Speaker 9: Oh, Jimmy.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Jimmy. I had to hide someplace. It was terrible.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I know. It was the only thing you could do.
- 13:52Speaker 7: Jimmy!
- 13:54Speaker 3: Yes?
- 13:54Speaker 7: Jimmy, I forgot to tell you that I'm having some
- 13:56Speaker 7: painting done tomorrow. So you'll have to be out of
- 13:59Speaker 7: here early. So I'm not getting painted these days without
- 14:01Speaker 7: making them wait for the tenants to get up, you know.
- 14:04Speaker 3: All right, Mrs. Gordon. I'll be out first thing in
- 14:06Speaker 3: the morning.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Good night.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Good night.
- 14:11Speaker 6: I will have to get him out of here.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Where will we take him?
- 14:15Speaker 3: I don't know. I've got to think. Here, Helen, you
- 14:19Speaker 3: try and get some rest.
- 14:20Speaker 6: Jimmy, let me go to the police. Let me tell
- 14:22Speaker 6: them that.
- 14:23Speaker 4: that.
- 14:24Speaker 6: I did it. Let me tell them what he was.
- 14:28Speaker 6: They won't do anything to me.
- 14:29Speaker 3: No, no. You try and rest. What time is it?
- 14:33Speaker 6: About six.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Six. We've got two hours before the painters get here.
- 14:38Speaker 6: What are we going to do, Jimmy?
- 14:40Speaker 3: Let's see. There's a car. No one will see us
- 14:42Speaker 3: if we take him through the service porch into the garage.
- 14:44Speaker 6: Then what.
- 14:46Speaker 3: I don't know, but that'll get him out of here anyway.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I think I can do it alone, Helen.
- 14:49Speaker 6: Listen, Jimmy, we're in this mess because of me. I'm
- 14:52Speaker 6: going to help you. I'll be ready in a minute.
- 14:59Speaker 5: When I went into the bathroom, the shower curtains were
- 15:02Speaker 5: standing open. His legs had slipped from their cramped position
- 15:05Speaker 5: and they'd pushed themselves into the room. He sat there
- 15:08Speaker 5: with his head twisted down and his chin digging into
- 15:10Speaker 5: his chest. I took a washcloth and I.
- 15:14Speaker 3: It was awful.
- 15:16Speaker 5: I wiped the blood off his face, just in case
- 15:18Speaker 5: anyone saw us. They might think he was just sick.
- 15:21Speaker 5: I tried to lift him, but I slipped. And his
- 15:24Speaker 5: head made a hollow sound as it dumped down on
- 15:26Speaker 5: the shower floor. Helen helped me get him into the
- 15:32Speaker 5: luggage compartment of the car.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Where are we going, Jimmy?
- 15:34Speaker 3: Helen, won't you please stay in the apartment?
- 15:37Speaker 6: No, no, I couldn't. I'm going with you.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Helen, haven't you done enough?
- 15:40Speaker 6: I'm going with you. Too late now to wish that
- 15:44Speaker 6: I hadn't... Where are we going?
- 15:51Speaker 3: To the pier, the Santa Monica Pier. Beyond the concessions,
- 15:54Speaker 3: you can drive a car on the end there.
- 15:55Speaker 11: Lucky it's so foggy.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Yeah. What time is it?
- 16:10Speaker 6: Five of seven.
- 16:12Speaker 5: We'll have to act fast. This fog will be clearing soon.
- 16:15Speaker 5: It'll be harder to get him out of this car. Now,
- 16:20Speaker 5: you stay here.
- 16:21Speaker 3: I can manage this alone this time.
- 16:22Speaker 6: Oh, I'll help you, Jimmy.
- 16:23Speaker 3: You stay here, do you hear me?
- 16:25Speaker 11: All right, call me if you need me.
- 16:26Speaker 3: I'll go around the back. Keep your eyes open. Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 7: Jimmy?
- 16:31Speaker 9: What?
- 16:32Speaker 6: Someone's coming. Who is it?
- 16:33Speaker 7: I can't see.
- 16:35Speaker 6: Jimmy, it's the police.
- 16:36Speaker 5: What?
- 16:37Speaker 6: It's the police.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Jimmy! Oh, it's all right.
- 16:40Speaker 6: I know him.
- 16:40Speaker 3: It's Red Davis. He's the beach patrolman. Uh, hello, Red.
- 16:47Speaker 9: Ah.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Well, hello, Jimmy.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Say, when do you get your sleep? Didn't you close
- 16:53Speaker 3: up after that swing ship dance last night?
- 16:55Speaker 5: Yeah, Red, but I couldn't seem to remember if I'd
- 16:57Speaker 5: locked up the old shooting gallery, so I came over
- 17:00Speaker 5: this morning to have a look around.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I see. Oh, I'm sorry. This is my sister. Red,
- 17:05Speaker 3: this is Helen. This is Red Davis.
- 17:08Speaker 11: Hello.
- 17:10Speaker 3: So you're an early riser, too, huh?
- 17:12Speaker 6: Yes, I am.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Well, the fog's clearing up. It looks like we're going
- 17:15Speaker 3: to get some sun today for a change, huh? Yeah. Well,
- 17:19Speaker 3: I guess I'll be getting back. I think I'll try
- 17:21Speaker 3: and catch a few more hours sleep. Well, so long. Yeah,
- 17:26Speaker 3: so long. Oh, say, say, Jimmy. Yeah?
- 17:29Speaker 1: Say, Jimmy, I have to take my wife over to
- 17:32Speaker 1: the nursery today to pick up some plants and stuff,
- 17:34Speaker 1: you know.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And I don't have a trunk on my car. I
- 17:36Speaker 3: wonder if you'll let me have yours.
- 17:38Speaker 6: You have to drive me over to Malibu this afternoon, Jimmy.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'd forgotten. Well, you can drive her over
- 17:42Speaker 3: in my car. How's that? Well, you see... That brother
- 17:45Speaker 3: of yours thinks I'll wreck that beautiful car of his. Oh,
- 17:48Speaker 3: it isn't that, Red. Okay, then I'll be over about noon.
- 17:51Speaker 3: I'll leave my car for you till I get back, Red. Well,
- 17:53Speaker 3: I won't be home at noon, Red. All right, I'll
- 17:54Speaker 3: meet you at the entrance to the pier.
- 17:56Speaker 6: How's that?
- 17:57Speaker 3: All right, Red. Well... So long.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 9: So long.
- 18:02Speaker 6: Why'd you say he'd be here, Jimmy?
- 18:06Speaker 3: Well, if I didn't, he'll go over to the apartment
- 18:07Speaker 3: looking for us. And you don't want any policemen over there,
- 18:10Speaker 3: do you? Oh.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Oh, no.
- 18:12Speaker 6: No, of course not.
- 18:14Speaker 3: We've got to get out of here fast.
- 18:18Speaker 5: As we drove along the ocean, the fog cleared up rapidly.
- 18:21Speaker 5: It was almost 8 o'clock and some kids were already
- 18:24Speaker 5: out on the beach playing around.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Then I saw a group of early picnickers.
- 18:28Speaker 5: They were unloading their blankets, umbrellas, and things.
- 18:31Speaker 3: I guess it was from them I got the idea.
- 18:33Speaker 3: From seeing them.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Jimmy, your gas is pretty near on empty.
- 18:37Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 18:38Speaker 6: You got any more coupons?
- 18:39Speaker 3: No, they're all used up. We're going to have to
- 18:41Speaker 3: do something soon.
- 18:42Speaker 6: I know, Jimmy.
- 18:43Speaker 5: We can't go back to the motel with the painters there.
- 18:45Speaker 5: And we can't leave him in the car. Reg LaBlessis
- 18:48Speaker 5: and Pinnis down to using it. There's only one place left.
- 18:51Speaker 9: Where, Jimmy?
- 18:53Speaker 3: Helen, listen. I'm going to let you out of this car.
- 18:56Speaker 3: You can't help me with what I've got to do now.
- 18:57Speaker 6: No, Jimmy, I'm staying.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Don't argue with me.
- 18:59Speaker 6: I'm not leaving you, Jimmy.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Get out of this car, do you hear me?
- 19:01Speaker 7: No.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I haven't time to argue with you.
- 19:03Speaker 6: Please.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Now get out.
- 19:05Speaker 6: I won't do it, Jimmy.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Yes, you will if I have to push you out.
- 19:07Speaker 7: Jimmy, you're hurting me.
- 19:09Speaker 6: There.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Now go back to the motel. Get off that running board, Helen.
- 19:13Speaker 6: I can't leave you alone, Jimmy. I want to help you.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I'm not blaming you for killing him, Helen, but now
- 19:17Speaker 3: you've got to help me do as I say. What, Jimmy, what?
- 19:19Speaker 3: I don't blame you for what you did. He deserved it.
- 19:21Speaker 3: But now you've got to help me handle things.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Jimmy, you've got to let me.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Goodbye, Helen.
- 19:25Speaker 9: Jimmy!
- 19:26Speaker 7: Oh, Jimmy, don't leave me!
- 19:27Speaker 11: Jimmy!
- 19:30Speaker 5: I watched her out of the mirror. She kept calling me.
- 19:33Speaker 5: I drove on as fast as I could. I knew
- 19:35Speaker 5: what I had to do when I was one chance
- 19:36Speaker 5: in a million.
- 19:37Speaker 3: But I had to take it. And I didn't want
- 19:39Speaker 3: her to be part of it.
- 19:44Speaker 5: If I could keep him on the beach that whole day,
- 19:46Speaker 5: then maybe I'd be able to get rid of him
- 19:48Speaker 5: when night fell. I wanted to drive further along, but
- 19:51Speaker 5: I was afraid I'd run out of gas. So I
- 19:55Speaker 5: settled for a deserted strip of beach not far from
- 19:57Speaker 5: the motel. I had my swimming shorts and a blanket
- 20:00Speaker 5: and a towel in the car, and I got out.
- 20:05Speaker 5: I looked around carefully, and then I opened the luggage
- 20:08Speaker 5: compartment and.
- 20:10Speaker 3: It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.
- 20:13Speaker 3: But I.
- 20:13Speaker 5: I started taking his clothes off. I managed to get
- 20:19Speaker 5: my shorts onto him. Lucky we were pretty near the
- 20:21Speaker 5: same size.
- 20:22Speaker 3: And then I... And I closed the door.
- 20:24Speaker 5: And I went out onto the beach and I spread
- 20:27Speaker 5: my blanket out on the sand.
- 20:28Speaker 3: And then I went back... Went back for him.
- 20:31Speaker 5: When there were no cars in sight, I carried him
- 20:35Speaker 5: over where I'd spread my blanket. And I placed him
- 20:38Speaker 5: onto it face down... with his hands folded over his head,
- 20:42Speaker 5: as though he were just sunbathing. Then I spread my
- 20:47Speaker 5: towel out a short distance from him, and I laid
- 20:50Speaker 5: down on it, and I tried to look relaxed. People
- 20:56Speaker 5: didn't start to arrive until about an hour later. Gradually,
- 21:00Speaker 5: little groups of sunbathers started to form. He and I,
- 21:04Speaker 5: we looked no different from the others. No one paid
- 21:07Speaker 5: any attention to us. I was beginning to feel that
- 21:09Speaker 5: everything was going to be easy once it was dark again, but.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Jimmy!
- 21:15Speaker 7: I've been looking all over for you.
- 21:16Speaker 1: What? I.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Oh, hello, Mrs. Gordon.
- 21:21Speaker 6: Where's Helen?
- 21:22Speaker 3: Isn't she in the apartment?
- 21:23Speaker 6: No. What time did you go out this morning?
- 21:26Speaker 3: I couldn't sleep.
- 21:27Speaker 6: Didn't Helen come in at all last night?
- 21:29Speaker 3: Yes, yes, she did, but she left early, too. Said
- 21:32Speaker 3: she was going into Los Angeles.
- 21:34Speaker 7: Oh, my.
- 21:36Speaker 6: I was so worried about her. Well, the painters came, Jimmy,
- 21:39Speaker 6: and everything's a mess. I think I'll sit down.
- 21:42Speaker 7: Here with you a while.
- 21:43Speaker 8: You're not with anyone, are you?
- 21:47Speaker 3: No. No, I'm not.
- 21:49Speaker 6: Goodness, I wish I'd brought along some oil. Looks like
- 21:52Speaker 6: it's going to be a hot day. You know, these
- 21:54Speaker 6: days that start off foggy are very deceiving.
- 21:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah, they are.
- 21:59Speaker 8: This is a real treat for me, Jimmy. I never
- 22:03Speaker 8: get out on the beach. I think I'll have a
- 22:05Speaker 8: nice day of rest for change. Later we can get
- 22:07Speaker 8: some sandwiches. The seat's on me.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Well, Mrs. Gordon, no, I hadn't planned on spending the
- 22:11Speaker 3: day at the beach. Oh, it'll be good.
- 22:13Speaker 6: For you, Jimmy.
- 22:14Speaker 8: Not healthy for a boy your age to be working
- 22:16Speaker 8: all night and sleeping all day.
- 22:18Speaker 3: But, Mrs. Gordon, you see, I.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Jimmy, do you know that man over there?
- 22:25Speaker 3: Which one?
- 22:25Speaker 6: Why, that one right there.
- 22:28Speaker 4: What?
- 22:28Speaker 3: No, I don't know him.
- 22:31Speaker 6: Well, he's lying so still. going to get an awful burn.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:36Speaker 6: Well, do you suppose he's asleep? It isn't good to
- 22:39Speaker 6: sleep in the sun, you know.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Mrs.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Gordon, do you think that the painters will be finished
- 22:43Speaker 5: by this afternoon? Huh?
- 22:45Speaker 6: Oh, well, I hope so. My, a person can get
- 22:50Speaker 6: an awful burn on a day like this. You know,
- 22:53Speaker 6: someone ought.
- 22:53Speaker 3: To speak to him. Mrs. Gordon, wouldn't you like to
- 22:56Speaker 3: go for a walk?
- 22:57Speaker 6: Oh, I'm not one for walking. You go ahead if
- 22:59Speaker 6: you like.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Well, I... Come on, Dick.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Pitch it over here. Oh, those kids. You children, stop that.
- 23:04Speaker 6: You're getting sand all over me. Oh, sorry, Lee. No
- 23:07Speaker 6: need to play here. There's a playground over by the pier.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Now you just get away from here. Don't pay no
- 23:12Speaker 6: attention to her.
- 23:13Speaker 7: She don't own the beach.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Pitch it over here.
- 23:15Speaker 3: I'm coming at you.
- 23:18Speaker 7: Uh-oh. He hit that guy on the piece.
- 23:20Speaker 6: Bam. Now see what they've done. They've hit that poor man.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Now they'll get what's coming to them.
- 23:25Speaker 9: Mrs.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Gordon, sure you don't want to go up and get
- 23:27Speaker 3: some sandwiches or something. I'll just stay here and.
- 23:29Speaker 6: Not until I see those two hoodlums get what they deserve. Shh. Gee,
- 23:33Speaker 6: I'm sorry, mister. Could we have our ball? Now, look
- 23:36Speaker 6: at that.
- 23:37Speaker 8: Ball's right in the crook of his arm. He's pretending
- 23:39Speaker 8: he's asleep. He's not going to hand it to them.
- 23:41Speaker 8: But just wait till they reach for it. He'll give
- 23:44Speaker 8: them something besides their ball.
- 23:45Speaker 6: What are you waiting for, Dickie? It's our ball. Just
- 23:48Speaker 6: take it. Oh, hey, mister, could we have... Go on,
- 23:51Speaker 6: take it. Here, I'll get it. Thanks, mister. What's the matter? Gee,
- 23:59Speaker 6: he's cold. What'd you say? He's cold, lady. His arms
- 24:02Speaker 6: are like ice. I just touched it. You probably hurt him. Well,
- 24:07Speaker 6: a ball like this couldn't hurt anybody. Well, nevertheless, it did.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Here.
- 24:12Speaker 6: Now, let's have a look.
- 24:16Speaker 3: And then she started moving toward him. I knew it
- 24:19Speaker 3: was useless to try and stop her. And then she
- 24:21Speaker 3: reached over and put her hand on his back. And
- 24:23Speaker 3: suddenly she was screaming.
- 24:24Speaker 11: Oh, fuck!
- 24:25Speaker 9: This man is dead!
- 24:27Speaker 3: This man is dead! Before long, there was a crowd
- 24:35Speaker 3: of people around us, and someone called the police.
- 24:38Speaker 5: I wanted to run, but I knew that would be
- 24:39Speaker 5: the wrong thing to do, so I just stayed there, numb-like,
- 24:42Speaker 5: watching things.
- 24:43Speaker 3: When the police came, they started questioning everybody. Mrs. Gordon
- 24:47Speaker 3: was first.
- 24:48Speaker 6: Why, why, he'd been there all morning. I came early,
- 24:51Speaker 6: and he was here already. Just like that. You know,
- 24:54Speaker 6: with his face down. Just like he was.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Was there anyone else around when you arrived?
- 24:58Speaker 6: Around? Yes, Jimmy was here. He was here all alone
- 25:01Speaker 6: with him. Weren't you, Jimmy.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I was.
- 25:05Speaker 6: Yes, you were.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Doesn't anyone know this man? Do you know him, Jim?
- 25:11Speaker 3: I told you kids to keep away from here now,
- 25:13Speaker 3: did you hear me?
- 25:14Speaker 6: We discovered him, didn't we? But it hadn't been for us. Yeah,
- 25:17Speaker 6: and you don't even know a clue when you see one.
- 25:19Speaker 6: Look at his fingernails. What's that? Oh, the child's right, officer.
- 25:23Speaker 3: What's that?
- 25:23Speaker 6: Now just look for yourself.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Let me see that.
- 25:26Speaker 9: Yes.
- 25:27Speaker 3: It looks like powder, something flaky. Are you sure none
- 25:33Speaker 3: of you people around here recognize him?
- 25:35Speaker 6: Recognize him? Well, I've never seen him. Officer.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Huh?
- 25:40Speaker 6: Why that flag that he's lying on? Well, it's from
- 25:43Speaker 6: my motel.
- 25:45Speaker 3: See?
- 25:45Speaker 6: It's stamped right under where you moved his hand. Oh, dear.
- 25:49Speaker 6: Look for yourself.
- 25:50Speaker 5: See?
- 25:50Speaker 6: It says Seaside Motor Cabin.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. And you're sure he wasn't registered?
- 25:55Speaker 6: Well, I'm positive.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Is there anyone else around here from your hotel? From
- 25:59Speaker 3: your motel?
- 26:00Speaker 6: Jimmy, look.
- 26:00Speaker 4: Jimmy!
- 26:02Speaker 6: Here comes Helen. Look, she's crying. Mrs.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Gordon, I ask if there was anybody around here from
- 26:07Speaker 3: your motel. Huh?
- 26:08Speaker 6: What's that? Oh, yes, Jimmy Barton here. And that girl,
- 26:13Speaker 6: you see, she's his sister. They've been with us for
- 26:15Speaker 6: several weeks.
- 26:16Speaker 3: Jimmy? What have you got to say, Jimmy?
- 26:21Speaker 5: And suddenly everyone was looking at me and at Helen
- 26:24Speaker 5: as she ran towards us. And like a fool, I
- 26:25Speaker 5: started to run too in Helen's direction to ward her off.
- 26:32Speaker 5: I didn't get far, however. Someone caught me with the arm. Jimmy!
- 26:36Speaker 7: Jimmy, I've been looking all over for you.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Don't say anything, Helen. Let me do the talking. Don't
- 26:39Speaker 3: say anything.
- 26:40Speaker 6: Jimmy, when you forced me out of the car this morning,
- 26:42Speaker 6: you said you didn't pay me for having killed him.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Helen, be still.
- 26:45Speaker 9: Don't.
- 26:45Speaker 11: Jimmy, I didn't kill him.
- 26:47Speaker 6: I thought you had. I was helping you get rid
- 26:49Speaker 6: of him because I thought you'd done it.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I'm sorry, kid.
- 26:53Speaker 9: Helen.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Helen, are you telling the truth?
- 26:56Speaker 6: I swear it, Jimmy. Bill and I were quarreling. He'd
- 27:00Speaker 6: been taking something again. He was like crazy.
- 27:02Speaker 3: This guy Phil?
- 27:03Speaker 10: And I knew there'd be trouble when he came home
- 27:05Speaker 10: from work. So I got out the back way and
- 27:07Speaker 10: I went looking for him on the pier. When I
- 27:09Speaker 10: couldn't find him, I went back to the motel and
- 27:11Speaker 10: I found him on the floor.
- 27:13Speaker 6: I thought you.
- 27:14Speaker 3: But Helen, why didn't you say so?
- 27:16Speaker 6: You didn't give me a chance, Jimmy. You just took
- 27:17Speaker 6: it for granted that I did it.
- 27:19Speaker 3: But who did kill him, Helen?
- 27:20Speaker 6: That's what I'm trying to tell you.
- 27:22Speaker 7: Nobody killed him.
- 27:23Speaker 6: What are you talking about?
- 27:25Speaker 7: I went to the.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Motel where I would go to wait for him. While
- 27:27Speaker 6: I was there, I remembered about Phil last night.
- 27:29Speaker 10: How strangely he'd act, and I hadn't been able to
- 27:32Speaker 10: walk straight, and how he'd almost fallen several times while.
- 27:35Speaker 6: We were quarreling. And then I saw the gas heater, Jimmy.
- 27:39Speaker 6: There was a sharp edge on the top of it.
- 27:43Speaker 6: He must have fallen. He must have.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Oh, but Helen, we've no way of proving that.
- 27:47Speaker 6: There was something else, Jimmy.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Yeah, what?
- 27:49Speaker 10: The wall above the heater was scratched, as though someone
- 27:51Speaker 10: had clutched at it to save himself from falling.
- 27:54Speaker 6: There might be fingerprints. There might be.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Oh, no, that's not... Wait a minute, Jimmy. Plaster!
- 28:00Speaker 6: Plaster! Hey, Red!
- 28:01Speaker 3: That flaky stuff you found under his fingernails, that might
- 28:04Speaker 3: have been plaster! And it was. Well, that's about it.
- 28:16Speaker 5: Everything checked back at the motel and the autopsy showed
- 28:18Speaker 5: he was full of dope.
- 28:20Speaker 3: But I guess it was really Mrs. Gordon who saved
- 28:22Speaker 3: our necks for us.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Besides talking so loud and so long that they'd probably
- 28:25Speaker 5: acquitted us just to get rid of us, She did
- 28:27Speaker 5: dig up a witness who'd heard Helen and Phil quarreling
- 28:30Speaker 5: and who'd seen Helen leave alone after he'd threatened her. Well,
- 28:35Speaker 5: everything's all right now. Helen and I are beginning to forget.
- 28:39Speaker 5: But it's Mrs. Gordon who's making quite a nuisance of
- 28:42Speaker 5: herself on the beach these days as she goes along
- 28:44Speaker 5: poking all the sunbathers and asking if they're sure they're
- 28:48Speaker 5: all right.
- 28:48Speaker 3: The End And so closes The Dead of the Night,
