0:00
Chapter thirty four. Genesis chapter thirty four. At this chapter begins the story
0:06
of Jacob's afflictions in his children, which were very great, and are recorded
0:12
to show. Number One, the vanity of this world. That which is
0:18
dearest to us may prove our greatest vexation, and we may meet with the
0:23
greatest crosses in those things of which we said, this same shall comfort us.
0:30
Number Two, the common griefs of good people. Jacob's children were circumcised,
0:37
were well taught and prayed for, and have very good examples set them.
0:43
Yet some of them proved very untoward. The race is not to the
0:48
swift, nor the battle to the strong. Grace does not run in the
0:53
blood, and yet the interrupting of the entail of grace does not cut off
0:58
the entail of profession and visible church privileges. Nay, Jacob's sons, though
1:04
they were his grief in some things, yet were all taken into covenant with
1:10
God. In this chapter we have numeral one Dinah debauched Verses one through five,
1:19
Numeral two, a treaty of marriage between her and Setchem, who had
1:23
defiled her Verse six through nineteen. Numeral three, the circumcision of the Sechemites
1:32
pursuant to that treaty Verses twenty through twenty four, Numeral four. The perfidious
1:38
and bloody revenge which Simeon and Levi took upon them Verses twenty five through thirty
1:46
one. Dinah dishonored BC seventeen thirty two, Verse one. And Dinah,
1:53
the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob went out to see the
1:57
daughters of the land verse two. And when she Kim, the son of
2:01
Hamoor, the Hivite prince of the country, saw her, he took her
2:07
and lay with her, and defiled her verse three. And his sole clayth
2:12
unto Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel and spake
2:16
kindly unto the damsel verse four. And Kim spake unto his father Haymore,
2:23
saying, get me this damsel to wife verse five. And Jacob heard that
2:29
he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his cattle in
2:32
the field, and Jacob held his peace until they were come. Dinah was
2:38
for aught. That appears Jacob's only daughter, and we may suppose her therefore
2:45
the mother's fondling and the darling of the family, and yet she proves neither
2:51
a joy nor a credit to them, for those children seldom prove either the
2:55
best or the happiest that are most in dulled. She is reckoned now,
3:01
But fifteen or sixteen years of age, when she here occasioned so much mischief.
3:07
Observe Number one her vain curiosity which exposed her. She went out,
3:14
perhaps unknown to her father, but by the connivance of her mother, to
3:19
see the daughters of the land Verse one. Probably it was at a ball
3:23
or some public day. Being an only daughter, she thought herself solitary at
3:29
home, having none of her own age and sex to converse with, And
3:32
therefore she must needs go abroad to divert herself, to keep off melancholy,
3:38
and to accomplish herself by conversation better than she could in her father's tents.
3:46
Note it is a very good thing for children to love home. It is
3:51
parents wisdom to make it easy to them, and children's duty then to be
3:54
easy in it. Her pretense was to see the daughters of the land,
4:00
to see how they dressed, and how they danced, and what was fashionable
4:03
among them she went to see. Yet that was not all. She went
4:09
to be seen too. She went to see the daughters of the land,
4:13
But it may be with some thoughts of the sons of the land too.
4:16
I doubt she went to get an acquaintance with those Canaanites and to learn their
4:21
way. Note the pride and vanity of young people betray them in many snares
4:30
Number two the loss of her honor. By this means verse two, she
4:34
kim the prince of the country, but a slave to his own loss took
4:40
her and lay with her. It should seem not so much by force as
4:45
by surprise. Note great men think they may do anything, and what more
4:50
mischievous than untaught an ungoverned youth. See what came of Dinah's gadding. Young
4:58
women must learn to be taste keepers at home. These properties are put together
5:04
Titus chapter two, verse five. For those that are not keepers at home
5:10
expose their chastity. Dinah went abroad to look about her, But if she
5:15
had looked about her as she ought, she would not have fallen into this
5:19
snare. Note the beginning of sin is as the letting forth of water.
5:26
How great a matter does a little fire kindle. We should therefore carefully avoid
5:30
all occasions of sin. And approaches to it. Number three the court of
5:36
Sikhim made to her after he had defiled her. This was fair and commendable,
5:43
and made the best of what was bad. He loved her not as
5:47
amnon Second Samuel, Chapter thirteen, verse fifteen, and he engaged his father
5:54
to make a match for him with her verse four, number four. The
6:00
tidings brought to poor Jacob verse five. As soon as his children grew up,
6:05
they began to be a grief to him. Let not godly parents that
6:10
are lamenting the miscarriages of their children think their case singular or unprecedented. The
6:16
good man held his peace as one astonished that knows not what to say,
6:23
or he said nothing for fear of saying amiss. As David Psalms, Chapter
6:29
thirty nine, Verses one and two. He smothered his resentments lest if he
6:34
had suffered them to break out, they should have transported him into any indecencies,
6:41
or it should seem he had left the management of his affairs very much
6:46
too much, I doubt to his sons, and he would do nothing without
6:51
them, or at least he knew they would make him uneasy if he did.
6:58
They have shown themselves of late upon all occasions bold forward and assuming note.
7:05
Things never go well when the authority of a parent runs low in a
7:11
family. Let every man bear rule in his own house and have his children
7:15
in subjection with all gravity treachery of Dinah's brethren b. C. Seventeen thirty
7:24
two, Verse six. And Haymore, the father of Si Cham, came
7:30
out unto Jacob to commune with him verse seven. And the sons of Jacob
7:34
came out of the field when they heard it. And the men were grieved,
7:39
and they were very wroth because he had wrought fally in Israel, lying
7:45
with Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done. Verse eight.
7:50
And Haymore communed with them, saying, the soul of my son Si Kam
7:56
longeth for your daughter. I pray you give her him to wife verse nine.
8:01
And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters to us,
8:07
and take our daughters unto you verse ten. And ye shall dwell with us,
8:13
and the land shall be before you dwell, and trade ye therein and
8:18
get you possessions therein verse eleven. And she Kim said, unto her father
8:24
and unto her brethren, let me find grace in your eyes and what ye
8:30
shall say unto me, I will give verse twelve. Ask me never so
8:35
much dowry in gift, and I will give a courting as ye shall say
8:39
unto me, but give me the damsel to wife verse thirteen. And the
8:45
sons of Jacob answered, she came and harmer his father deceitfully, and said,
8:50
because he had defiled Dinah their sister verse fourteen. And they said,
8:56
unto them, we cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one
9:01
that is uncircumcised, for that were a reproach unto us verse fifteen. But
9:07
in this will we consent unto you. If ye will be as we be,
9:13
that every male of you be circumcised verse sixteen, then will we give
9:18
our daughters unto you. And we will take our daughters unto us, and
9:24
we will dwell with you, and we will become one people verse seventeen.
9:28
But if ye will not hearken unto us to be circumcised, then we will
9:33
take our daughter and we will be gone. Jacob's sons, when they heard
9:37
of the injury done to Dinah, showed a very great resentment of it,
9:43
influence perhaps rather by jealousy for the honor of their family than by a sense
9:48
of virtue. Many are concerned at the shamefulness of sin, that never lay
9:54
to heart the sinfulness of it. It is here called folly in Israel verse
10:00
seven, according to the language of after times, for Israel was not yet
10:05
a people, but a family only. Note one. Uncleanness is folly,
10:11
for it sacrifices the favor of God, peace of conscience, and all the
10:18
soul can pretend to that is sacred and honorable, to a base and brutish
10:24
lust. Number two, this folly is most shameful in Israel. In a
10:30
family of Israel, where God is known and worshiped as he was in Jacob's
10:35
tents by the name of the God of Israel, Folly in Israel is scandalous.
10:39
Indeed, Number three, it is a good thing to have sinned stamped
10:45
with a bad name. Uncleanness is here perverably called faaly in Israel. Second
10:52
Samuel, chapter thirteen, verse twelve. Dinah is here called Jacob's daughter,
11:00
for warning to all the daughters of Israel that they betray not themselves to this
11:05
folly. Haymore came to treat with Jacob himself, but he turns him over
11:11
to his sons, and here we have a particular account of the treaty,
11:16
in which it is a shame to say the Canaanites were more honest than the
11:22
Israelites. Numeral one. Haymore and see Kham fairly proposed this match in order
11:30
to a coalition in trade. She Kim is deeply in love with Dinah.
11:35
He will have her upon any terms Verse eleven and twelve. His father not
11:41
only consents, but solicits for him, and gravely insists upon the advantages that
11:48
would follow from the union of the families verse nine and ten. He shows
11:52
no jealousy of Jacob, though he was a stranger, but rather an earnest
11:58
desire to settle a correspondence with him and his family, making him that generous
12:03
offer the land shall be before you trade you Therein Numeral two, Jacob's sons
12:11
basely pretend to insist upon a coalition and religion, when really they designed nothing
12:20
less. If Jacob had taken the management of this affair into his own hands,
12:24
it is probable that he and Haymoor would soon have concluded it. But
12:30
Jacob's sons mediate only revenge and a strange project they have for the compassing of
12:37
it. The Shekhamites must be circumcised, not to make them, why they
12:43
never intended that, but to make them sore, that they might become an
12:48
easier prey to their sword. Number one. The pretense was specious. It
12:54
is an honor of Jacob's family that they carry about with them the of God's
13:00
covenant with them. And it will be a reproach to those that are thus
13:05
dignified and distinguished to enter in such a strict alliance with those that are uncircumcised
13:13
Verse fourteen. And therefore, if you will be circumcised, then we will
13:18
become one people with you, Verse fifteen and sixteen. Had they been sincere
13:26
herein their proposal of these terms, would have had it in something commendable.
13:31
For Israelites should not intermarry with Canaanites, professors with profane It is a great
13:39
sin, or at least the cause and inlet of a great deal, and
13:43
has often been a pernicious consequence. The interest we have in any persons and
13:50
the hold we have with them, should be wisely improved by us to bring
13:56
them to the love and practice of religion. He that winneth so Roles is
14:00
wise, But then we must not, like Jacob's sons, think it enough
14:05
to persuade them to submit to the external rights of religion, but must endeavor
14:11
to convince them of its reasonableness, and to bring them acquainted with the power
14:16
of that number two. The intention was malicious, as appears by the sequel
14:22
of the story. All they aimed at was to prepare them for the day
14:26
of slaughter. Note. Bloody designs have often been covered and carried on with
14:33
a pretense of religion. Thus they have been accomplished most plausibly and most securely.
14:41
But this dissembled piety is doubtless double iniquity. Religion is never more injured,
14:48
nor are God's sacraments more profaned, than when they are thus used for
14:54
a cloak of maliciousness. Nay, if Jacob Gab's sons had not had this
15:01
bloody design, I do not see how they could justify their offering the sacred
15:07
sign of circumcision the seal of God's Covenant to those devoted Canaanites who had no
15:15
part or lot in this matter. Those had no right to seal, that
15:20
had no right to the promise. It is not meet to take the children's
15:24
bread and cast it to dogs that Jacob's sons valued not this while they could
15:31
make it serve their turn verse eighteen. And their words pleased Hamoor and seek
15:37
him Hamer's son verse nineteen. And the young man deferred not to do the
15:43
thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he was more honorable
15:50
than all the house of his father verse twenty. And Haymoor and she Khim
15:56
his son came unto the gate of their city and immuned with the men of
16:00
their city, saying verse twenty one, these men are peaceable with us.
16:07
Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade therein. For the land behold
16:11
it is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us for
16:17
wives, and let us give them our daughters verse twenty two. Only herein
16:22
will the men consent unto us, for to dwell with us, to be
16:26
one people. If every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised
16:33
verse twenty three, shall not their cattle and their substance, and every beast
16:38
of theirs be ours. Only let us consent unto them, and they will
16:44
dwell with us verse twenty four. And unto Haymoor and to she Kim his
16:51
son. Hearkened all that went out of the gate of this city, and
16:56
every male was circumcised all that went out of the gate of his city.
17:02
Here Number one, Haymoor and she Kim gave consent themselves to be circumcised verse
17:10
eighteen nineteen. To this, perhaps they were moved not only by the strong
17:15
desire they had to bring about this match, but what they might have heard
17:21
of the sacred and honorable intentions of this sign in the family of Abraham,
17:26
which it is probable they had some confused notions of and of the promises conferred
17:34
by it, which made them the more desirous to incorporate with the family of
17:40
Jacob. Zachariah, Chapter eight, verse twenty three. Note many who know
17:48
little of religion yet know so much of it as makes them willing to join
17:52
themselves with those that are religious. Again, if a man would take upon
17:59
him a former religion to gain a good wife, much more should we embrace
18:03
the power of it to gain the favor of a good God, even circumcise
18:10
our hearts to love him. And as she can here not defer to do
18:15
the thing. Number two, they gained the consent of the men of the
18:18
city Jacob's sons, requiring that they also should be circumcised. One, they
18:26
themselves had great influence upon them by their command and example. Note, religion
18:33
would greatly prevail if those in authority, who, like she Kim, were
18:38
more honorable than their neighbors, would appear forward and zealous for it. Two
18:45
they urged an argument which was very cogent verse twenty three. Shall not their
18:51
cattle and their substance be ours. They observed that Jacob's sons were industrious,
18:56
thriving people, and promised themselves and their neighbors advantage by alliance with them.
19:03
It would improve ground and trade and bring money into their country. Now,
19:10
One, it was bad enough to marry upon this principle, Yet we see
19:15
covetousness the greatest matchmaker in the world, and nothing designed so much with many
19:22
as the laying of house to house and feeld to field without regard had to
19:30
any other consideration. Two, it was worse to be circumcised upon this principle.
19:37
The Sikamites will embrace the religion of Jacob's family only in hopes of interesting
19:42
themselves thereby in the riches of that family. Thus there are many with whom
19:48
gain is godliness, and who are more governed and influenced by their secular interest
19:56
than by any principle of thy religion. Murder of the Shekamites b. C.
20:02
Seventeen thirty two, verse twenty five. And it came to pass on
20:07
the third day, when they were sore, that the two sons of Jacob,
20:11
Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword and came
20:17
upon the city boldly and slew all the males verse twenty six. And they
20:22
slew Hamor and Seekam his son with the edge of the sword, and took
20:27
Dinah out of Siechim's house and went out verse twenty seven. The sons of
20:33
Jacob came upon the slain and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their
20:38
sister verse twenty eight. They took their sheep and their oxen, and their
20:44
asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in
20:48
the field verse twenty nine, and all their wealth, and all their little
20:52
ones and their wives took they captive and spoiled even all that was in the
20:59
house verse thirty. And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, ye have troubled
21:04
me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the
21:10
Canaanites and the Perzesites, and I, being few in number, they shall
21:15
gather themselves together against me and slay me, and I shall be destroyed,
21:22
I and my house verse thirty one. And they said, should he deal
21:26
with our sister as with an harlot. Here we have Simeon and Levi,
21:32
two of Jacob's sons, young men not above twenty years old, cutting the
21:37
throats of the Sichemites, and thereby breaking the heart of their good father Numeral
21:42
one. Here is the barbarous murder of the Sikamites. Jacob himself was used
21:48
to the sheep hook, but his sons had got swords by their sides,
21:53
as if they had been the seed of Esau, who was to live by
21:57
his sword. We have them here number one, slaying the inhabitants of Sichem,
22:03
all the males a more unseeach'em, particularly with whom they had been
22:08
treating in a friendly manner, but the other day, yet with a design
22:14
upon their lives. Some think that all Jacob's sons, when they wheedled the
22:19
Sichemites to be circumcised, designed to take advantage of their soreness and to rescue
22:26
Dinah from among them. But the Simeon and Levi, not content with that,
22:32
would themselves avenge the injury, and they did it with a witness.
22:37
Now one, it cannot be denied, but that God was righteous in it.
22:44
Had the Sichemites been circumcised in obedience to any command of God, their
22:48
circumcision would have been their protection. But when they submitted to that sacred right
22:53
only to serve a turn, to please their prince and to enrich themselves,
22:59
it was just with God to bring this upon them. Note as nothing secures
23:03
us better than true religion, so nothing exposes us more than religion. Only
23:11
to pretend to two but Simeon and Levi were most unrighteous one. It was
23:18
true that Sicham had wrought folly against Israel in defiling Dinah. But it ought
23:22
to have been considered how far Dinah herself had been necessory to it. Had
23:29
Sechim abused her in her own mother's tent, it would have been another matter.
23:33
But she went upon his ground, and perhaps by her indecent carriage,
23:40
had struck the spark which began the fire. When we are severe upon the
23:45
sinner, we ought to consider who was the tempter. Two It was true
23:52
that Sichim had done ill, but he was endeavoring to atone for it,
23:56
and was as honest and honorable ex post facto after the deed as the case
24:03
would admit. It was not the case of the Levite's concubine that was abused
24:10
to death. Nor does he justify what he has done, but courts a
24:15
reconciliation upon any terms. Three it was true that Siechum had done ill,
24:21
But what was that to all the Sichemites? Does one man's sin and will
24:26
they be wroth with all the town? Must the innocent fall with the guilty?
24:32
This was barbarous, indeed, for but that which above all aggravated the
24:37
cruelty was the most perfidious treachery that was in it. The Sichemites had submitted
24:45
to their conditions and had done that upon which they had promised to become one
24:49
people with them Verse sixteen. Yet they act as sworn enemies to those to
24:56
whom they had lately become sworn friends, making as light of their covenant as
25:02
they did of the laws of humanity. And are those the sons of Israel
25:07
cursed be their anger, for it was fierce. Five. This also added
25:14
to the crime that they made a holy ordinance of God subservient to their wicked
25:19
design, so making that odious. As if it were not enough for them
25:26
to shame themselves upon their family, they bring a reproach upon that honorable badge
25:32
of their religion. Justly would it be called a bloody ordinance number two seizing
25:38
the prey of Sichem and plundering the town they rescued Dinah verse twenty six.
25:45
And if that was all they came for, they might have done that without
25:49
blood, as appears by their own showing verse seventeen. But they aimed at
25:56
the spoil. And though Simeon and Levi only were the murderers, yet it
26:02
is intimated that others of the sons of Jacob came upon the slain and spoiled
26:07
the city verse twenty seven, and so becoming accessory to the murder in them,
26:14
it was manifest in justice. Yet here we may observe the righteousness of
26:19
God. The Sea Chamites were willing to gratify the sons of Jacob by submitting
26:25
to the penance of circumcision upon this principle, shall not their cattle and all
26:30
their substance be ours verse twenty three, and see what was the issue.
26:37
Instead of making themselves masters of the wealth of Jacob's family, Jacob's family became
26:42
masters of their wealth. Note those who unjustly grasp at that which is another's
26:51
justly lose that which is their own Numeral II. Here is Jacob's resentment of
26:57
this bloody deed of and Levi verse thirty two. Things he bitterly complains of
27:04
number one, the approach they had brought upon him. Thereby, you have
27:10
troubled me, put me into a disorder, for you have made me to
27:15
stink among the inhabitants of the land. That is, you have rendered me
27:19
and my family odious among them. What will they say of us in our
27:23
religion? We shall be looked upon as the most perfidious, barbarous people in
27:29
the world. Note the gross misconduct of wicked children is the grief and shame
27:36
of their godly parents. Children should be the joy of their parents, but
27:41
wicked children are their trouble, sadden their hearts, break their spirits, and
27:45
make them go mourning from day to day. Children should be an ornament to
27:51
their parents, but wicked children are their reproach and are as dead flies in
27:56
the pot of ointment. But let such cheerchildren know that if they repent,
28:02
not the grief they have caused to their parents, and the damage religion has
28:07
sustained in its reputation through them, will come into the account and be reckoned.
28:14
For Number two, the ruin they had exposed him too. What could
28:18
be expected but that the Canaanites, who were numerous and formidable, would confederate
28:26
against him, and he and his little family would become an easy prey to
28:30
them. I shall be destroyed I and my house. If all the Sichemites
28:37
must be destroyed for the offense of one, why not all the Israelites for
28:42
the offense of two. Jacob knew, indeed that God had promised to preserve
28:48
and perpetuate his house. But he might justly fear that these vile practices of
28:56
his children would amount to a forfeiture and cut off the entail. Note,
29:03
when sin is in the house, there is reason to fear ruin at the
29:07
door. The tender parents foresee those bad consequences of sin which the wicked children
29:14
have no dread of. One would think they should have made them to relent,
29:19
and they should have humbled themselves to their good father and begged his pardon.
29:25
But instead of this they justify themselves and give him this insolent reply,
29:32
Should he deal with our sister as a harlot? No he should not,
29:37
But if he do, must they be their own avengers. Will nothing less
29:42
than so many lives and the ruin of whole city serve to atone for an
29:48
abuse done to one foolish girl. By their question, they tacitly reflect upon
29:55
their father, as if he would have been content to let them deal with
30:00
his daughter as with a harlot. Note it is common for those who run
30:06
into one extreme to reproach and as censure those who keep them mian, as
30:11
if they ran into the other. Those who condemned the rigor of revenge shall
30:18
be misrepresented as if they countenanced and justified the offense. And of Chapter thirty four
