- 1:34Speaker 1: or treat OHL team edition. We're going to get into
- 1:36Speaker 1: what teams we think are for real and which ones are,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I guess, the trick in that in that equation. We're
- 1:43Speaker 1: also going to welcome on longtime Kitchener Rangers play by
- 1:47Speaker 1: play voice Mike Farwell, also the host of the OHL podcast,
- 1:51Speaker 1: friend of the show and friend of ours as well.
- 1:53Speaker 1: He's going to join us in segment two, talking about
- 1:55Speaker 1: the reigning defending Memorial cup champion Kitchener Rangers coming off
- 1:58Speaker 1: of their championship season as well. We'll we've got a
- 2:01Speaker 1: lot of headlines to go over Friday night, face off
- 2:03Speaker 1: power rankings, players of the week, our stick taps, our
- 2:07Speaker 1: personal teams and players that we thought deserved a shout
- 2:10Speaker 1: out this week. And a central scouting list came out
- 2:13Speaker 1: as well. So a lot of big stuff there, Memorial cup,
- 2:15Speaker 1: potential changes coming there. We'll discuss all that on today's
- 2:18Speaker 1: show for a special spooky edition of the OHL and
- 2:22Speaker 1: 60 podcast. Colin, Before we get going, you know, it's
- 2:26Speaker 1: an interesting week because obviously Halloween will be on a Saturday,
- 2:30Speaker 1: which is always fun, right? Those are always the best.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And it's projected to be good weather, so that's always
- 2:35Speaker 1: a good thing because I feel like the last three
- 2:36Speaker 1: years have been raining on Halloween. So you always want
- 2:38Speaker 1: to see the kids out there trick-or-treating, getting the candy,
- 2:41Speaker 1: getting the cavities, I guess. And, you know, it's always
- 2:44Speaker 1: one of the best times of the year. The fall
- 2:45Speaker 1: season's gorgeous out there. It's just a fun time to
- 2:48Speaker 1: enjoy hockey as well.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Absolutely. At least you don't have to go to the
- 2:52Speaker 3: dentist on the Sunday. At least you have a day
- 2:54Speaker 3: to prepare for the dentist. For those who have a
- 2:56Speaker 3: dentist appointment on Monday, good luck. I mean, all the
- 3:00Speaker 3: best to you there. It's always the worst.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Is that the worst time of the year to have
- 3:04Speaker 4: a dentist appointment or over Christmas break? Like that two
- 3:08Speaker 4: weeks over Christmas is also brutal. But I feel like
- 3:11Speaker 4: if you're going to have a dentist appointment, the worst
- 3:13Speaker 4: day would be after Halloween.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Because you're out all night. You get home.
- 3:16Speaker 4: You're not going to break out in that stash of yours, right?
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah. I used to love the stash. I used to
- 3:23Speaker 3: take it to school.
- 3:23Speaker 4: I used to take a couple of candies to school
- 3:25Speaker 4: with me to my lunch every day when I was
- 3:27Speaker 4: in school. And then I do that. And then I would,
- 3:31Speaker 4: I just have a stash watching the game. Oh yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 4: The full size chocolate bars are the best.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Now when it's on a weekday, obviously the kids have
- 3:40Speaker 1: to wait till after they get home from school and
- 3:42Speaker 1: everything like that. And the parents to get home from work.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So on a Saturday, like what is the time to
- 3:47Speaker 1: go out trick or treating on a Saturday?
- 3:49Speaker 3: Well, are we starting at three so then the adults
- 3:50Speaker 3: can go out after?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Are we starting at noon? How early should I have
- 3:56Speaker 1: the candy out?
- 3:57Speaker 3: If we got a kid. Yeah, I know.
- 3:58Speaker 4: And you don't want to put the bowl out because
- 4:00Speaker 4: it's gone by five on a weekend, right?
- 4:01Speaker 3: So I don't know.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Honestly, I don't know what I would do. I feel
- 4:04Speaker 4: like when it rains, it pours. That's what I think
- 4:07Speaker 4: of it with Halloween. Once one kid's out, you got
- 4:10Speaker 4: to set the tone. Who's going to set the tone
- 4:12Speaker 4: this year? Who's going to be the first guy banging
- 4:14Speaker 4: in the corner, getting on the defense, getting poxed in deep?
- 4:17Speaker 4: Who's going to be the first one at the doorstep?
- 4:19Speaker 4: It's always a big question, and do you want to
- 4:21Speaker 4: be that person? Do you want to be that person
- 4:22Speaker 4: who's the first one there? Me personally, if you love candy,
- 4:26Speaker 4: I never really liked Halloween because it was always the first. Well,
- 4:30Speaker 4: this is like the 31st, so obviously it's on a Saturday,
- 4:33Speaker 4: but this year's Hockey Night in Canada.
- 4:35Speaker 3: World Series is on.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I'm sure that when I was a kid, I used
- 4:39Speaker 4: to never go for Halloween because either the World Series
- 4:41Speaker 4: was on, Toronto Raptors usually had their home opener, one
- 4:44Speaker 4: of their first games was around then, or the Red
- 4:46Speaker 4: Wings played.
- 4:48Speaker 3: It was always up in arms if I went out.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I think I stopped going out at like 11 because
- 4:53Speaker 4: I wanted to watch the Red Wings game or back
- 4:56Speaker 4: when the Red Wings were good.
- 4:58Speaker 1: How many sacks of candy did you have stashed in
- 5:00Speaker 1: the house? When you ran out, did you go back
- 5:03Speaker 1: and refill or empty it out so you could bring
- 5:05Speaker 1: a whole new sack out there to fill up?
- 5:08Speaker 4: So we'd get a box, put it in our... We'd
- 5:11Speaker 4: come home, we'd get a box and... my sister and
- 5:15Speaker 4: I would put it in a container, like in the
- 5:17Speaker 4: box of all of our candy. And we would go
- 5:19Speaker 4: through our subdivision. So it was always the best spot
- 5:22Speaker 4: to go in the town of the, of the city
- 5:25Speaker 4: of the Delhi, Ontario. So we'd go through the subdivision,
- 5:29Speaker 4: create havoc. And then boom, it's go, we're going ham.
- 5:34Speaker 4: And then on, before like we went through our subdivision,
- 5:36Speaker 4: we'd go to my grandparents. We'd go to some family friends,
- 5:40Speaker 4: like when we were kids. So we would go there
- 5:42Speaker 4: and yeah, have some fun. I mean, Like I said,
- 5:45Speaker 4: I would go– a lot of times– and this is
- 5:47Speaker 4: a true story.
- 5:48Speaker 3: So when my dad's listening to this, he'd be so
- 5:51Speaker 3: mad if I didn't say this.
- 5:52Speaker 4: So we'd go out– this is me. This is Colin
- 5:56Speaker 4: for you, Brandon. And you'll know this for a fact.
- 5:58Speaker 4: So we'd go out for Halloween, right? I'm not going.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I'm going to watch the Red Wing game. My sister
- 6:03Speaker 4: would come back full bags of candy. All of a sudden,
- 6:07Speaker 4: here I am throwing on my Peyton Manning jersey, my
- 6:10Speaker 4: Red Wing jersey, a Blue Jay jersey. one of my
- 6:13Speaker 4: sports teams and all of a sudden I'm a player
- 6:15Speaker 4: and I'm going out trick or treat in our subdivision.
- 6:17Speaker 4: You see that all the time. So I say, I
- 6:18Speaker 4: stopped winning it going out at 11, but then here
- 6:21Speaker 4: I am. I see all the candy and I want
- 6:23Speaker 4: to participate in the party and have some fun.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:25Speaker 4: So go through the subdivision, create havoc and get all
- 6:30Speaker 4: the candy you can get.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And obviously hear about how bad the Red Wings are
- 6:35Speaker 3: and this and that. And it was great. I used
- 6:37Speaker 3: to love it.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Well, uh, before this, obviously having a baby face had its, uh,
- 6:42Speaker 1: had its perks. I think I went out until I
- 6:44Speaker 1: was in like grade 11 or 12. So, um, I
- 6:47Speaker 1: was able to get up, up in the, up in
- 6:49Speaker 1: the way until then. Cause I still look like I
- 6:51Speaker 1: was in grade seven.
- 6:51Speaker 3: So what was your go-to costume? Were you a big
- 6:54Speaker 3: costume guy?
- 6:56Speaker 1: I guess, but like, yeah, it was just easy to
- 6:57Speaker 1: just throw on a Jersey, you know, but I had
- 7:00Speaker 1: a couple of good ones, but.
- 7:01Speaker 4: I got to find this. I got to find this picture. My, uh,
- 7:04Speaker 4: Halloween costume. When I went to Superman, I had no
- 7:06Speaker 4: front teeth.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I wish you would have dressed up as Scorsese one year.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah. You imagine? Um, no.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Shout out to Ryan Payette with the article on the
- 7:17Speaker 4: one they call Scorsese too. A couple of years back,
- 7:20Speaker 4: he wrote an article on Scorsese about it was a
- 7:22Speaker 4: certain amount of years. He's been doing it with the
- 7:23Speaker 4: Knights and it was a really cool, um, Scorsese used
- 7:27Speaker 4: to scare me as a kid.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I didn't like mascots as a kid. Um, but, uh,
- 7:32Speaker 3: I was too focused trying.
- 7:33Speaker 4: To get autographs and run around the new, uh, jlc
- 7:36Speaker 4: at the time i was too busy trying to get autographs.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah and that picture you and dale hunter that uh
- 7:41Speaker 1: is one of mike farwell's favorites that we'll ask him
- 7:43Speaker 1: about later because he sure loves when he gets to
- 7:46Speaker 1: go to the vatican of junior hockey in london so.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Oh yeah that was that was the hockey school the
- 7:50Speaker 4: night's uh hockey.
- 7:51Speaker 1: School absolutely we're gonna ask him uh probably a london
- 7:55Speaker 1: knights question with his affiliation with the kitchen arrangers so
- 7:57Speaker 1: stay tuned for that mike farwell play by play voice
- 8:00Speaker 1: of the kitchen arrangers joining us in segment two today
- 8:02Speaker 1: so let's uh Let's bang through these headlines here. Colin,
- 8:04Speaker 1: central scouting list came out today or yesterday, if you're
- 8:07Speaker 1: listening to this on the audio version. But 69 OHLers
- 8:11Speaker 1: are listed on the central scouting list for the 2027
- 8:16Speaker 1: NHL entry draft. And we've got some notable players here
- 8:19Speaker 1: that I'm just going to pull up of guys that
- 8:21Speaker 1: have A and B rankings. So an A ranking indicates
- 8:25Speaker 1: a first round talent candidate and a B ranking indicates
- 8:29Speaker 1: a second or third round candidate. Colin, just quickly. I'll
- 8:33Speaker 1: read off these and then you can get your, I
- 8:35Speaker 1: guess we can get your thoughts on it. Ryerson, Edgar,
- 8:37Speaker 1: Levi Harper. Um, we got, uh, Kazda, Kuhlman, McCaslin. I
- 8:44Speaker 1: can't even read the thing. It's so small.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Yep.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Yep.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Yep. Yep.
- 8:49Speaker 6: Yep.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yep.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yep. Yep. Yep.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Yep.
- 8:53Speaker 6: Yep. Yep.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yep.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Mike Farwell out in segment two. Yakko Wysik, Easton Wallace,
- 9:07Speaker 1: Cooper McCaslin, Alex Kuhlman, Timo Kasda are the other ones
- 9:11Speaker 1: that I couldn't read because I had it up too small.
- 9:13Speaker 1: But call in there. We got the A's and the B's.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Who sticks out to you there? I know we both
- 9:17Speaker 1: talked about Jilkin and Wysik being our two candidates for
- 9:21Speaker 1: that's going to go top, be the first one taken
- 9:24Speaker 1: off the board from the OHL. But what are your
- 9:26Speaker 1: thoughts on the guys ranked A and B right now?
- 9:28Speaker 3: No, I think it's great. I mean, I think, and
- 9:30Speaker 3: that's for skaters too.
- 9:31Speaker 4: I think there's 18 in total AB rankers in the list.
- 9:35Speaker 4: So that shows how deep the OHL draft is because
- 9:37Speaker 4: those are first three rounds, right? And you have 18.
- 9:41Speaker 4: That's a good year for the OHL in general. And
- 9:44Speaker 4: you got a couple of goalies on there as well
- 9:45Speaker 4: for the goalie department. I honestly, it's so early. I
- 9:50Speaker 4: like Drew Roscoe in Saginaw. I like how he looks.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Obviously Santola and Kitchener, When he's done, got to see
- 9:57Speaker 4: him a little bit on the weekend.
- 9:58Speaker 3: I thought he looked really good in the game against Guelph.
- 10:00Speaker 3: on Sunday.
- 10:00Speaker 4: You know, a few chances. It looked like he was
- 10:02Speaker 4: buzzing a little bit. So, uh, those two kind of
- 10:04Speaker 4: stand out for me in the bottom of the list.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Brenner Lammon's obviously a local guy for me, um, from Langton, uh,
- 10:10Speaker 4: 20 minutes away from the city, the capital of Norfolk, uh,
- 10:14Speaker 4: where the big election is, uh, on Monday night. But, uh, um,
- 10:18Speaker 4: Brenner Lemons to me and Sarnia is a big one.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I think that he has a big year, a chance
- 10:24Speaker 4: to prove himself right after last year and where the
- 10:26Speaker 4: sting is. Everyone kind of gets a fresh start. They're
- 10:29Speaker 4: kind of not very good right now. Sarnia, they got
- 10:31Speaker 4: to find it again. But I think those three kind
- 10:34Speaker 4: of stand out to me as a chance to kind
- 10:36Speaker 4: of push for an A spot. What's Caden McGregor, right?
- 10:39Speaker 4: First overall pick in the OHL by the Peterborough Peets,
- 10:42Speaker 4: now Brantford Bulldogs, plays the top six role with the Bulldogs.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Is he on the cusp of moving up If the
- 10:49Speaker 4: Bulldogs have a strong season, right. Similar to Saginaw's Kitcheners.
- 10:53Speaker 3: What is that? Right.
- 10:55Speaker 4: So I'm very interested to see about those four where
- 10:58Speaker 4: they can move up. I'm always attracted to the B
- 11:00Speaker 4: ranked because every year we see a B ranked skater
- 11:03Speaker 4: going the first round in this draft. And it almost,
- 11:07Speaker 4: and for those who aren't ranked, it's almost as if
- 11:10Speaker 4: it's okay. There's so many guys that we see Brandon
- 11:13Speaker 4: on each given year where it's like, it can flip flop.
- 11:16Speaker 4: We'll see somebody who's ranked in a now and they'll
- 11:18Speaker 4: end up going to the second or third round in
- 11:20Speaker 4: June or vice versa. We'll see someone who's ranked in
- 11:23Speaker 4: the second or third round now, but they'll go in
- 11:24Speaker 4: the first round. So I'm excited to see who's the
- 11:27Speaker 4: riser this year. I always liked the risers on this
- 11:29Speaker 4: Halloween week. So we'll see who rises this year. And
- 11:33Speaker 4: I think those four guys have a chance to do so.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 1: The initial ranking, it doesn't really mean anything at the
- 11:38Speaker 1: end of the day. It just is the first ranking
- 11:40Speaker 1: of the season. But again, when you get to the
- 11:42Speaker 1: final ranking, that's going to be obviously the the big one.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And even the midterm, when we get to January ish,
- 11:48Speaker 1: is when you really start to see, OK, these these
- 11:51Speaker 1: are the ones to watch right now. But this radar
- 11:53Speaker 1: could potentially change. As you mentioned, guys could be a
- 11:56Speaker 1: W rank, which indicates a sixth or seventh round candidate
- 11:59Speaker 1: or a C rank, which is a fourth or fifth
- 12:00Speaker 1: round pick. And they end up becoming an A or
- 12:03Speaker 1: B ranking, one that that I remember. fondly as Ethan
- 12:07Speaker 1: Zada was a W potential six, seventh rounder. He went
- 12:10Speaker 1: in the second round for the ice dog a few
- 12:11Speaker 1: years ago for Tampa Bay. So anything can happen. And
- 12:13Speaker 1: for those players out there, don't get discouraged. If you've
- 12:15Speaker 1: got a low ranking, just use it as motivation. And
- 12:18Speaker 1: maybe you can be an A or a B or
- 12:20Speaker 1: who knows again, this doesn't necessarily mean that these guys
- 12:24Speaker 1: are just guaranteed to be the top guys taken off
- 12:26Speaker 1: the board. We always see at the NHL draft, some
- 12:28Speaker 1: teams just go, go completely off the board and some
- 12:31Speaker 1: people aren't even expecting that. So that's just the initial ranking,
- 12:34Speaker 1: but giving you an idea of, Who to watch here
- 12:36Speaker 1: going into the fall and winter for, I guess, the
- 12:40Speaker 1: 2027 NHL draft prospects and the draft gurus out there
- 12:44Speaker 1: in the thousand, you know, I guess, the mock drafts
- 12:48Speaker 1: and everything like that. They'll be back in full force. Yeah,
- 12:53Speaker 1: the the wannabe, I guess, NHL scouts out there. But
- 12:57Speaker 1: there's a lot of them and everybody's got an opinion
- 12:59Speaker 1: on this draft board. But again, we're just here giving
- 13:02Speaker 1: you the information. I don't claim to be. a draft
- 13:04Speaker 1: expert whatsoever. So here we go. We're going to move
- 13:07Speaker 1: into trades, Colin, and we'll start off with the big
- 13:11Speaker 1: one of the week, which happened yesterday. Arvin Jaswal, goaltender
- 13:15Speaker 1: from the Barry Colts, along with a sixth round pick,
- 13:17Speaker 1: go to the London Knights for a second round pick,
- 13:20Speaker 1: a third pair of third round picks and a fourth
- 13:23Speaker 1: round pick. We saw Mark Hunter early in the year, Colin,
- 13:25Speaker 1: in September, he was loading up on draft picks. He
- 13:28Speaker 1: was trading away players for picks. We were wondering what
- 13:30Speaker 1: types of players were going to be coming in. But
- 13:32Speaker 1: they get a good young goaltender here in Arvin Jaswal,
- 13:34Speaker 1: adding it to the mix of their three goalies. I
- 13:37Speaker 1: did watch Mike Stubbs' little mini interview with Mark Harper
- 13:39Speaker 1: today that you reposted that said Jaswal is going to
- 13:42Speaker 1: be out for a couple more weeks recovering from an injury.
- 13:46Speaker 1: But it looks like he's going to be right in
- 13:47Speaker 1: the mix there with the Knights this season.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Yeah, no, absolutely. I think he's going to be right
- 13:51Speaker 3: in the mix. I think London's going to kind of
- 13:53Speaker 3: roll that three-guy race together. We'll see what's public though, right?
- 13:59Speaker 3: That's what they say publicly.
- 14:00Speaker 4: But I have a feeling you have two weeks here
- 14:02Speaker 4: before Jaswell comes back. You don't have to rush him back.
- 14:05Speaker 4: He's an 18-year-old goaltender. So you don't have to rush
- 14:08Speaker 4: him back by any means. But I'm curious to see.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Rumors are rumors.
- 14:15Speaker 4: But I find it hard to believe a three-man race
- 14:19Speaker 4: or a three-man tandem when you move four picks out
- 14:22Speaker 4: to get Arvin Jaswell and you're going to play He's
- 14:25Speaker 4: not going to be a healthy scratch, is he? You
- 14:28Speaker 4: sent four picks, so you wouldn't think he's going to
- 14:31Speaker 4: be a scratch. Medved has a drafted goaltender, so that
- 14:34Speaker 4: means he's going to be the guy that gets scratched
- 14:36Speaker 4: with Cook. So that's kind of what their scratches are
- 14:41Speaker 4: going to be, right, between those two. So I don't
- 14:43Speaker 4: think that's going to happen. When you think about it
- 14:44Speaker 4: like that, I don't think it's going to happen for
- 14:46Speaker 4: the long term. I think come deadline time, you can
- 14:49Speaker 4: get a couple more picks, which I expect the London
- 14:51Speaker 4: Knights to do. I think they will do that, and
- 14:53Speaker 4: then they can acquire other talent to boost up their
- 14:55Speaker 4: team because they're not consistent enough yet. They got a
- 14:58Speaker 4: lot of issues there. For a London team, I know
- 15:02Speaker 4: it's early in the season. I know it's early. I
- 15:04Speaker 4: can't believe it's already six weeks into the season, Brandon.
- 15:07Speaker 4: But for London, when we saw their last championship teams,
- 15:11Speaker 4: and honestly, the year they lost to Saginaw, the Memorial Cup,
- 15:14Speaker 4: they were the best team in the league. They won
- 15:16Speaker 4: the OHL that year. And you can see those teams, right?
- 15:21Speaker 4: you could see them, they had that it factor. They
- 15:24Speaker 4: clicked right from the start. And obviously they never had
- 15:26Speaker 4: a 4-0 start before, as Mike said on the show.
- 15:29Speaker 3: But then you see these inconsistencies.
- 15:32Speaker 4: They take too many penalties. The discipline lacks at times
- 15:37Speaker 4: for them. And I think that those types of things
- 15:38Speaker 4: need to get cleaned up. They never had those issues
- 15:42Speaker 4: back a couple seasons ago when they won the Memorial Cup,
- 15:44Speaker 4: when they won an OHL title. They never had those issues. Yes,
- 15:47Speaker 4: they took penalties.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Yes, they had guys like Ryder Bolton, Sawyer Bolton.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Guys that played with an edge for on a hundred percent,
- 15:54Speaker 4: but they were good enough to outscore those problems. They
- 15:56Speaker 4: were good enough to outskill those problems right now.
- 15:58Speaker 3: There's just not there.
- 15:59Speaker 4: And obviously guys come back from NHL camps. You got
- 16:01Speaker 4: to get used to the flow of things. So that's
- 16:03Speaker 4: kind of where I think the Knights are at. This
- 16:05Speaker 4: is very interesting.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Arvin jazz.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Well, he's a great goaltender, great season last year with the,
- 16:10Speaker 4: with the Barry Colts, but I find it very interesting.
- 16:13Speaker 4: A three, a three man race in net. You're not
- 16:16Speaker 4: going to scratch Medvedev for a long time. Cause he's,
- 16:19Speaker 4: let's be honest, Brandon, how many times do we see
- 16:21Speaker 4: a drafted goaltender getting healthy scratched? A guy's not coming
- 16:25Speaker 4: from the States to be a healthy scratch as a
- 16:28Speaker 4: third goaltender.
- 16:30Speaker 1: My question to you is a second, two thirds and
- 16:32Speaker 1: a fourth for a goaltender. We just saw all the
- 16:34Speaker 1: controversy in the NHL about what a top goaltender in
- 16:37Speaker 1: Connor Hellebuck is worth comparatively to skaters. Like, what do
- 16:40Speaker 1: you think about London giving up a second, two thirds
- 16:43Speaker 1: and a fourth year for a goaltender?
- 16:44Speaker 4: If you have the picks, use them. If you have
- 16:47Speaker 4: the picks, use them. London has the picks. They made
- 16:49Speaker 4: a lot of those deals. If we look back at
- 16:51Speaker 4: their trades that they made recently, right. When they moved
- 16:54Speaker 4: on some picks, a lot of those picks are off now.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:56Speaker 4: So I feel like now they're kind of back. They
- 16:58Speaker 4: still have some picks left from what they just moved, um,
- 17:01Speaker 4: before that. So I feel like they're okay.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Um, he's a good goaltender.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Obviously if your staff, if you're Mark Hunter and staff,
- 17:09Speaker 4: and you like this kid and he's obviously their guy,
- 17:11Speaker 4: this is obviously the guy they want. Then four picks
- 17:15Speaker 4: is nothing for a goaltender. Um, of the, of his caliber.
- 17:19Speaker 4: So I feel like that's okay. I know it's a lot.
- 17:22Speaker 4: It is a lot for sure. But if the, if
- 17:24Speaker 4: London likes them and they think they can get multiple
- 17:26Speaker 4: years out of this kid, which they obviously do believe
- 17:29Speaker 4: in Arvin Joswell, I think it's.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Okay of a move.
- 17:32Speaker 4: I think it's fine, but I'm just very intrigued, man,
- 17:35Speaker 4: about this three, this three goalie race.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Like how, how is it going to, how is
- 17:40Speaker 1: it going to work?
- 17:42Speaker 4: My question, Brandon, for you is do they, and we're
- 17:46Speaker 4: not going to mention player names.
- 17:48Speaker 3: But the writing's on the wall. The writing is on
- 17:50Speaker 3: the wall.
- 17:51Speaker 4: But if you have a drafted goaltender who obviously when
- 17:55Speaker 4: they acquired jazz wall, are they going to run both?
- 17:58Speaker 4: You're going to bring in an American goaltender and not
- 18:01Speaker 4: play him.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Well, it's almost like Guelph situation, right? With Jovanovsky and Harabic.
- 18:06Speaker 3: And that's another question.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And like I say, I start, I say this where, well,
- 18:12Speaker 4: if you have a drafted goaltender and if you're going
- 18:14Speaker 4: to scratch them, because you have a kid from the
- 18:16Speaker 4: States who came in, um, to dress, not be a scratch.
- 18:20Speaker 4: So are you going to trade your drafted goaltender and
- 18:23Speaker 4: get multiple picks back, which there's, if you trade four
- 18:26Speaker 4: picks and you get two back for another goal for
- 18:28Speaker 4: giving up on a goaltender, the steel doesn't look as bad,
- 18:31Speaker 4: but then on the flip side, do you trust the depth?
- 18:35Speaker 4: If you, if you roll with jazz wall, Medvedev, do you,
- 18:42Speaker 4: do you trust the depth against golf in a seven
- 18:44Speaker 4: game series?
- 18:45Speaker 3: Is this what we're seeing? Like, Do you trust it
- 18:48Speaker 3: against Saginaw? I know that division.
- 18:50Speaker 4: I get too caught in that divisional race because Saginaw
- 18:53Speaker 4: is going to be there in the conference and possibly
- 18:55Speaker 4: Sue as well with the way they're playing. So I'm
- 18:58Speaker 4: very intrigued to see, is that one of these moves?
- 19:02Speaker 4: Our guy gets down.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Boom.
- 19:03Speaker 4: We trust the process here because Guelph with the goaltending,
- 19:07Speaker 4: them saying, hey, we're not going to trade Jovanovski, which.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Is the right move. which is the right move. Why
- 19:11Speaker 3: would you do that in Memorial Cup here?
- 19:13Speaker 4: It's just London saying, hey, we're going to have the
- 19:14Speaker 4: best goaltending. We want the best goaltending. We want the
- 19:17Speaker 4: best defense core. We want to outmatch them because we
- 19:20Speaker 4: know that's a team more than likely in our division,
- 19:22Speaker 4: more than likely we're going to have to go through
- 19:24Speaker 4: to get to where we want to go in the
- 19:25Speaker 4: end goal of winning an OHL championship and a Memorial
- 19:28Speaker 4: Cup berth. Is that what London's thinking in this trade?
- 19:31Speaker 4: Because if so, then it makes sense. But it's definitely
- 19:35Speaker 4: interesting to see where they're.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Going to go.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yep, and Jaswal, he started 24 games for Barry Colt's
- 19:40Speaker 1: team that obviously had a lot of success. He was 18,
- 19:42Speaker 1: three and two with a 2.45 goals against average and
- 19:45Speaker 1: a nine 22 save percentage. So a really good season
- 19:48Speaker 1: for jazz wall as an 08 goaltender again, looking for
- 19:51Speaker 1: big things from him when he does come back from injury,
- 19:53Speaker 1: he's going to have to, you know, get caught up
- 19:55Speaker 1: to speed there in London, but a few weeks away
- 19:57Speaker 1: from his debut. But again, with Medvedev there and the
- 20:00Speaker 1: tandem they already have, it shouldn't be, should be fine
- 20:03Speaker 1: with London. But then when he comes back, then we
- 20:05Speaker 1: were probably, we might have to have another discussion on
- 20:07Speaker 1: this show about what they're going to do there. but
- 20:09Speaker 1: Mark Hunter's always got something up his sleeve. And yeah,
- 20:11Speaker 1: I mean, if there's some team out there that really
- 20:13Speaker 1: is in need of a goaltender, then I'm sure Mark
- 20:16Speaker 1: Hunter's phone's going to be ringing. So this one's going
- 20:19Speaker 1: to take a while for us to kind of see
- 20:20Speaker 1: how this plays out. We probably won't know until the
- 20:23Speaker 1: end of November how this one is really going to
- 20:25Speaker 1: play out. But we got another trade to talk about here, Colin,
- 20:27Speaker 1: from your neck of the woods. Jack Torre forward goes
- 20:30Speaker 1: to the Erie Otters. Coming back to Brantford is a
- 20:33Speaker 1: second-round pick in 2028 and a fourth-round pick in 2030. Colin,
- 20:38Speaker 1: we know Spencer Hyman's been very active this season already,
- 20:41Speaker 1: trading multiple players and bringing in multiple players and then
- 20:45Speaker 1: signing players that were American free agents and things like that.
- 20:49Speaker 1: What can you tell us about this trade? And, you know,
- 20:52Speaker 1: I guess for both sides, it looks like they got
- 20:54Speaker 1: what they wanted here.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I know the Bulldogs want picks.
- 20:57Speaker 4: I think they want to give themselves an opportunity to
- 20:59Speaker 4: acquire picks and to possibly where they are in the standings, right,
- 21:03Speaker 4: to be able to add to this lineup. Um, and I,
- 21:06Speaker 4: I truly believe that's what they think they can do
- 21:08Speaker 4: in their front office. And, uh, rightly so when you're
- 21:11Speaker 4: right now in your tops in the conference, you're going
- 21:13Speaker 4: to think that way because another month from now, you're
- 21:15Speaker 4: kind of going to know where you are in the, uh,
- 21:18Speaker 4: in the.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Buyer sell range. So for them to acquire picks, um,
- 21:23Speaker 3: for Erie, you get a power forward, you get a
- 21:25Speaker 3: forward who can kill penalties, never played on the power
- 21:28Speaker 3: play in Brantford, but he will be able to kill penalties.
- 21:31Speaker 4: You're going to be a depth player. Um, probably be
- 21:35Speaker 4: that top nine range, be your third line center. And, uh,
- 21:38Speaker 4: he's going to give you opportunity, right? You had seven
- 21:40Speaker 4: points in 11 games, the Bulldogs. Um, and we'll see
- 21:43Speaker 4: what happens, right? Uh, we'll see what happens in the area.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I mean, you get a big player, you can be hard.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Hopefully he fits in well in that group and it's
- 21:51Speaker 4: easy in the dressing room, but, uh, for him and
- 21:54Speaker 4: we'll see what happens. But, uh, For Jack, I think
- 21:56Speaker 4: he has a great opportunity in Erie, and I think
- 21:58Speaker 4: Erie will definitely use him.
- 21:59Speaker 3: I mean, he's close to home, which is nice as well.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Yeah, a PA native himself from Philadelphia. Just, I guess,
- 22:04Speaker 1: the other side of Pennsylvania, but up there in Erie.
- 22:07Speaker 1: So I guess we'll have to wait and see how
- 22:09Speaker 1: that one progresses. But again, Spencer Hyman continues to stockpile
- 22:12Speaker 1: some draft picks, Colin, and I think it's an exciting
- 22:16Speaker 1: time in Brantford as well to see what's going to
- 22:18Speaker 1: happen there. I know Jason Moose is going to be
- 22:20Speaker 1: out a little bit for them right now, but again,
- 22:22Speaker 1: they still... Look really good in that Eastern Conference right now. Last,
- 22:27Speaker 1: I guess, trade that we should go over here. The
- 22:30Speaker 1: Niagara Ice Dogs trading overage depth defenseman Liam Spencer to
- 22:35Speaker 1: the Sarnia Sting. Another former London Knight becomes a Sarnia
- 22:39Speaker 1: Sting and vice versa. And the Ice Dogs get back
- 22:42Speaker 1: a sixth round pick. So good depth for Sarnia here.
- 22:45Speaker 1: A guy that's reliable. A guy that is a defensive
- 22:47Speaker 1: stay-at-home defenseman. Big guy. And again, another guy that has
- 22:51Speaker 1: London Knights ties. which is just funny between those two organizations,
- 22:55Speaker 1: how many, how many players have gone back and forth
- 22:58Speaker 1: between those two organizations. But triangle Niagara had, I think
- 23:02Speaker 1: eight or nine healthy defensemen. So somebody had to go here.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Unfortunately it was Liam Spencer, but you know, Dale de
- 23:08Speaker 1: Grey picks up a sixth round pick in 27 and
- 23:10Speaker 1: Sarnia gets himself some more depth on the backend.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 23:14Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, the OA situation played itself out Niagara
- 23:17Speaker 4: and yeah, that triangle continues London, Niagara, Sarnia, The trade
- 23:22Speaker 4: trees between those teams would be so intriguing over the
- 23:26Speaker 4: last five seasons and five years. So a 10-year span, Brandon,
- 23:30Speaker 4: the trade trees that we always see in the National
- 23:32Speaker 4: Hockey League would be crazy in junior. I mean, we
- 23:36Speaker 4: already see some players who turn out to be like,
- 23:39Speaker 4: you know, like the stars, and it's pretty neat to see.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Like when we saw Bonk turn out and Cowan that
- 23:44Speaker 4: draft when they had back-to-back picks. I think it was
- 23:46Speaker 4: an Ice Dogs pick too, one of the picks.
- 23:50Speaker 3: For one of those players.
- 23:50Speaker 4: I forget who it was, but it's interesting to see
- 23:53Speaker 4: how those things turn out and like how the trades always,
- 23:56Speaker 4: when we look back, like what's that sixth round pick
- 23:58Speaker 4: going to be in this new age and era?
- 24:00Speaker 3: What's it going to be, right? Is it going to
- 24:01Speaker 3: be a hot shot from the States? What are we
- 24:03Speaker 3: going to get?
- 24:04Speaker 1: And then we've got some alumni news and some Jersey
- 24:07Speaker 1: retirements coming to the Ontario Hockey League. Niagara involved in
- 24:10Speaker 1: this as well. The Erie Otters also announced a few
- 24:13Speaker 1: weeks ago that Alex Debrinket and Ryan Stromer, or excuse me,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Dylan Strom, are going to have their jerseys retired in
- 24:19Speaker 1: the EIA later in the, in 2027, which will be
- 24:22Speaker 1: really cool for those players, obviously winning an OHL championship
- 24:25Speaker 1: with the Otters. You know, that line was unbelievable. And
- 24:28Speaker 1: to think that McDavid could have been back with that
- 24:30Speaker 1: team that season as well, just an incredible couple of
- 24:33Speaker 1: years for the Erie Otters. So I forgot to mention
- 24:36Speaker 1: them as well, as we're going to quickly discuss on
- 24:39Speaker 1: Niagara here, as they are going to retire the jurors,
- 24:42Speaker 1: their first retired jerseys. This is a little bit, I guess,
- 24:45Speaker 1: significant in that sense, Colin. Freddie and Dougie Hamilton are
- 24:48Speaker 1: going to be the first jerseys up there as Niagara
- 24:51Speaker 1: Ice Dogs. I know they've got some other jerseys up
- 24:54Speaker 1: there from some of the other heritage teams that have
- 24:57Speaker 1: played in the St. Catharines area, but for the Ice
- 24:59Speaker 1: Dogs to finally get some players up there and some
- 25:02Speaker 1: banner retirements, I think, is well-deserved, and I think this
- 25:05Speaker 1: is going to be, I guess, a snowball effect for
- 25:08Speaker 1: about four or five other guys that probably could have
- 25:10Speaker 1: their jerseys retired in Niagara, but the Hamilton brothers made
- 25:13Speaker 1: a huge impact when Niagara, when they first moved relocated
- 25:16Speaker 1: from Mississauga to Niagara and the Hamiltons are remembered fondly
- 25:20Speaker 1: very well to this day. They're in St. Catherine's in
- 25:22Speaker 1: the Meridian center.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, I remember the impact that
- 25:26Speaker 3: they had and it's cool, right?
- 25:28Speaker 4: When you come into Niagara and you, you know, you, you,
- 25:31Speaker 4: you're able to represent the ice dogs like that back
- 25:34Speaker 4: at the Jack and it's it's cool to see.
- 25:37Speaker 3: It's cool to see that landscape brand. Who would you
- 25:39Speaker 3: say is next? Who's in this mix? obviously covering the
- 25:42Speaker 3: ice dogs before growing up in Niagara, who would be the,
- 25:46Speaker 3: who would be next?
- 25:48Speaker 1: There's a couple of candidates. I mean, Alex Petrangelo potentially
- 25:51Speaker 1: for the few years.
- 25:52Speaker 3: He had there, he would have to be next, right?
- 25:54Speaker 1: Like he'd be, I don't know. I mean, there's, there's
- 25:56Speaker 1: so many guys you could list off Ryan Strom, Vince Dunn,
- 26:00Speaker 1: Akil Thomas for, I mean, we could go through a
- 26:03Speaker 1: whole decade of Niagara ice dog players. Yeah. I mean,
- 26:07Speaker 1: Mark Byzantine, obviously. you've got, you know, Luca Caputi, the
- 26:11Speaker 1: first 50 goal scorer as well, but he wore number 13. So, uh, that's, uh,
- 26:15Speaker 1: most likely gone now that Freddie Hamilton's going to have it.
- 26:17Speaker 1: But I think Doug, I think Dougie was right in
- 26:18Speaker 1: the conversation, uh, on the Mount Rushmore of Niagara ice dogs.
- 26:21Speaker 1: So I understand why as the brothers, they would go
- 26:23Speaker 1: in together. So that's a really cool moment for their family, but, uh,
- 26:26Speaker 1: and obviously Dougie still playing with the New Jersey devils.
- 26:29Speaker 1: So that's, uh, that's interesting there, but there's a lot
- 26:31Speaker 1: of guys in Niagara that could, potentially have their jerseys retired.
- 26:34Speaker 1: But Dougie and Freddie, I think, is fitting in a
- 26:37Speaker 1: way because they're so synonymous with that area.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Man, those jerseys are so cool. They got to bring
- 26:43Speaker 4: those jerseys back. The old Reebok days, I remember being
- 26:47Speaker 4: obsessed with Reebok goalie pads. Those are my favorite kind
- 26:50Speaker 4: of goalie pads growing up. And those jerseys were so
- 26:53Speaker 4: cool at Niagara. I wish they'd bring those back. For
- 26:56Speaker 4: the game, they should have those as a specialty jersey.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, there's so many guys that have played
- 27:02Speaker 1: that wore that jersey that I remember growing up and
- 27:04Speaker 1: nostalgic that I could think of. Even guys that played
- 27:07Speaker 1: five years as Ice Dogs, which is very rare that
- 27:09Speaker 1: we see in today's day and age with the NCAA
- 27:11Speaker 1: ruling and everything like that. There's a couple other guys
- 27:14Speaker 1: that may not be as well-known at the NHL level,
- 27:17Speaker 1: but at the OHL level and for the Ice Dogs,
- 27:19Speaker 1: they were the heartbeat of those teams for all those years.
- 27:21Speaker 3: It was nice to see Johnny Schaefer there on the weekend.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Yep, Johnny Schaefer was there, obviously, with his brother playing,
- 27:26Speaker 1: Matthew Schaefer playing for the Erie Otters. And, and Johnny
- 27:30Speaker 1: playing for the ice dogs and Matt going into games,
- 27:32Speaker 1: watching Johnny there at the Meridian center. So that was
- 27:34Speaker 1: cool to see him drop the puck for rivalry. We
- 27:36Speaker 1: calling quickly on that. What did you think of OHL
- 27:39Speaker 1: rivalry week? We saw a couple of the teams go
- 27:41Speaker 1: back and forth with some, some nice jabs there. Peterborough,
- 27:44Speaker 1: Oshawa comes to mind. I know there were a couple
- 27:47Speaker 1: other teams that had some good ones. I Brantford with
- 27:49Speaker 1: the whole, you know, fishing rod with Brampton. There was
- 27:51Speaker 1: a lot of good stuff, but I'm glad we do this.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Cause I think the league needs it.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not a fan of social media of
- 28:00Speaker 4: team social media is ripping each other after games.
- 28:03Speaker 3: I'm not a fan of that.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Obviously rivalry weekend. I understand that for the weekend for sure.
- 28:07Speaker 4: I love what a Flint, I think it was Flint
- 28:09Speaker 4: getting axing off the asses, like go to like what
- 28:12Speaker 4: the Ohio state does with the team up North. So
- 28:16Speaker 4: I think that's pretty cool. Like stuff like that. I
- 28:18Speaker 4: think that is really neat. And I honestly, like, I
- 28:21Speaker 4: understand it for this weekend.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I love it.
- 28:23Speaker 4: I think it's great for your eyes. I thought it,
- 28:26Speaker 4: in person watching games closely. I thought that it.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Was one of the better weeks for attendance. I think
- 28:31Speaker 3: attendance was better.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Um, obviously I have a little bit of beef from
- 28:35Speaker 4: last week, uh, Wednesday night game in Sarnia where tickets
- 28:37Speaker 4: cost $ 34 a ticket, um, for a middle of the
- 28:41Speaker 4: night or middle midweek game.
- 28:42Speaker 3: I'm not a fan of that.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Um, I think that's, I don't, I mean, I'd rather
- 28:48Speaker 4: give tickets away and have a full building than making people,
- 28:51Speaker 4: Nickland dime people for $ 34 for to go to a
- 28:53Speaker 4: hockey game on a midweek. Um, So I'll leave that.
- 28:57Speaker 4: But I love rivalry weekend. I think rivalry weekend is
- 29:00Speaker 4: really good for the league. I think it gives everybody
- 29:02Speaker 4: a chance to pack their bar. And I think it's
- 29:04Speaker 4: the most intrigue. It's a second last week of October.
- 29:08Speaker 4: I think that stuff's really intriguing to me.
- 29:10Speaker 3: And I honestly, I love it. I think it's cool.
- 29:12Speaker 4: I mean, I got one for you Saturday, Brant and
- 29:15Speaker 4: steelheads in town, obviously the Bulldogs, Brandon bruiser walks out
- 29:19Speaker 4: your guy with a, with a fishing net. I had
- 29:24Speaker 4: a fishing net. I was going to send you a picture,
- 29:26Speaker 4: but I didn't have time. But I was going to
- 29:29Speaker 4: send you a picture there. He had a fishing net.
- 29:31Speaker 3: I was like, oh, no.
- 29:33Speaker 4: BC would be dying right now if he saw this. But,
- 29:37Speaker 4: uh no i think it's cool i like the mascot
- 29:39Speaker 4: play sudbury north bay did some good mascot social media
- 29:42Speaker 4: stuff uh which was really cool and i think it's
- 29:45Speaker 4: great i think we're every weekend's good i think those
- 29:47Speaker 4: little things like that go a long way i mean
- 29:49Speaker 4: obviously peterborough with the pucks with the shower head like
- 29:53Speaker 4: the bubble bath.
- 29:54Speaker 1: They wanted for me i'm sorry.
- 29:56Speaker 3: That's the top one yeah that's a top one by
- 29:58Speaker 3: far I was dying when I saw that. That was
- 30:01Speaker 3: so funny. Peter, bro.
- 30:03Speaker 4: I mean, that's the icing on the cake for robbery weekend.
- 30:06Speaker 4: That and the axes in Flint were my two favorites
- 30:09Speaker 4: from a rivalry weekend, social media.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Those were unbelievable.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I got to give a shout out to Erie too,
- 30:14Speaker 1: with Tim Quinn going around the university and Erie asking
- 30:16Speaker 1: what everybody's thoughts were of the ice dogs. And then
- 30:18Speaker 1: nobody had any idea who they were. That was the best.
- 30:21Speaker 1: That was, yeah, that one was good too. So I'm
- 30:23Speaker 1: glad the team's social, uh, social units get involved there
- 30:27Speaker 1: and even the broadcasters and everything like that. It was
- 30:29Speaker 1: a lot of fun to see it around the league.
- 30:31Speaker 1: And I'm glad they continue to bring this back every week.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Cause it's a, it's a cool little, little in season,
- 30:35Speaker 1: I guess, bragging rights that, that happens throughout. Right.
- 30:38Speaker 3: So I love it.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Mike far was going to join us in about 10
- 30:41Speaker 1: minutes here, Colin. So we'll get through our last headline here.
- 30:43Speaker 1: And I know you got a lot of thoughts on it,
- 30:45Speaker 1: so we might as well start with it. Potential changes
- 30:48Speaker 1: coming to the Memorial cup tournament after the year, 2028.
- 30:50Speaker 1: We know that the Quebec ramparts are going to host the,
- 30:54Speaker 1: the 2028 tournament. But after that, we got some interesting
- 30:57Speaker 1: comments from CHL Commissioner Dan McKenzie about potentially some changes
- 31:02Speaker 1: coming to how the format of the tournament works. Maybe
- 31:05Speaker 1: eight teams, maybe double elimination instead of single game elimination. Colin,
- 31:11Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on it? And I'm going to
- 31:12Speaker 1: pull up a little bit of, I guess, thoughts that
- 31:16Speaker 1: a friend of the show, Josh Brown, had a chat
- 31:19Speaker 1: with Dan McKenzie, I believe, at the Memorial Cup that
- 31:22Speaker 1: just passed. about what he would like to see potentially
- 31:25Speaker 1: change if it were to, uh, obviously, you know, get,
- 31:29Speaker 1: get amended here, but what are your thoughts on it? I, uh,
- 31:33Speaker 1: first off, I want the moral cup to stay as is.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Um, I love the way the moral cup is. I
- 31:37Speaker 3: think it makes it special. I think it's the hardest league.
- 31:40Speaker 3: I think it's the hardest trophy to win in sport. Um,
- 31:42Speaker 3: and I don't think it's even anywhere close.
- 31:44Speaker 4: So you have a host team obviously who could be
- 31:48Speaker 4: winning their championship and going the hard way that hasn't
- 31:50Speaker 4: happened in a while, but, You have a host team
- 31:53Speaker 4: that probably has a series, possibly two series off. So
- 31:57Speaker 4: obviously they're kind of favored a little bit. And then
- 31:59Speaker 4: you have the three champions from the league. And I
- 32:02Speaker 4: think the coolest part of the CHL championship is the
- 32:05Speaker 4: interviews after the Memorial cup gets handed out in the
- 32:09Speaker 4: interviews with the players about how hard those two weeks
- 32:13Speaker 4: are the 10, 11 days we're in Kelowna for the
- 32:15Speaker 4: Kitchener Rangers, you know, like, hearing Mike Stubbs talk about
- 32:19Speaker 4: a lot of nights in Rimouski where they lost the
- 32:21Speaker 4: medicine hat. And it's like, well, you know, here we go.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:24Speaker 4: And those are the stories that make our trophy, the
- 32:28Speaker 4: hardest trophy to win in all a sport. And it
- 32:31Speaker 4: is the hardest to win in all a sport. It's
- 32:33Speaker 4: harder to win than the Stanley cup. Cause if you
- 32:34Speaker 4: want the Stanley cup, okay, then now go play in
- 32:37Speaker 4: a tournament against the other three champions around the world.
- 32:40Speaker 3: You're right. It's a, it's a hard trophy to win.
- 32:43Speaker 3: It's the hardest trophy to win.
- 32:45Speaker 4: And I think for that point, That's why I don't
- 32:48Speaker 4: want it to be changed. But I obviously had to
- 32:51Speaker 4: come up, Brandon, with an idea if it does get changed.
- 32:55Speaker 4: And my thought process is, one, I know we're going
- 32:57Speaker 4: in a landscape right now with the NCAA and the
- 33:02Speaker 4: way we're moving, it reminds me a lot of the
- 33:04Speaker 4: national championship in college football. And it's fine, but the
- 33:11Speaker 4: games don't mean anything in college football. You're going to
- 33:14Speaker 4: have nine and three teams get in possibly this season
- 33:17Speaker 4: with just an eight with just a 12 team playoff.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Now they go to 24 and that's banana lands for me. I, I,
- 33:23Speaker 4: I don't understand that at all, but you're going to
- 33:27Speaker 4: have teams like Michigan get in and lose 50 to
- 33:29Speaker 4: nothing in the first game. And thanks for coming out boys.
- 33:33Speaker 4: But they're not even ranked. So they won't even get
- 33:34Speaker 4: a chance at that. They'll be in the Fiesta.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Bowl or the pop tart bowl. But I think my
- 33:40Speaker 3: idea is for this, if you're going to do, I
- 33:45Speaker 3: like the six teams.
- 33:46Speaker 4: If you're going to change it, do six teams. Champions go, obviously.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Champions go. I would like to see the regular season
- 33:55Speaker 4: champion get an opportunity. So I'd like to see the
- 33:58Speaker 4: regular season champion get an opportunity to go as well.
- 34:02Speaker 4: So obviously those could overlap.
- 34:03Speaker 3: Because make the regular season important, right? Make it important
- 34:09Speaker 3: to teams. Because last year, could you imagine if we had.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Prince Albert in the, in the Memorial cup, in the
- 34:17Speaker 4: Memorial cup, along with, uh, Kelowna, or if we had, uh,
- 34:22Speaker 4: Brantford along with Kitchener, that would be kind of, that
- 34:24Speaker 4: would be cool. Um, I think that would be really
- 34:27Speaker 4: neat to see those teams, like to have those extra
- 34:29Speaker 4: teams go, because you're going to have the max value.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Look at the prospects on those teams that obviously in
- 34:35Speaker 4: the right format, I'm going to say the right format
- 34:37Speaker 4: because it is the right format, the current format. But, um,
- 34:40Speaker 4: if it, if obviously if it's not the right format,
- 34:43Speaker 4: we're going to have to, uh, have teams come in.
- 34:45Speaker 4: And I think that's kind of where I like, I
- 34:47Speaker 4: like the regular season champions come in because if you
- 34:49Speaker 4: have the regular season champions come in, you get an
- 34:51Speaker 4: opportunity to, it's hard to do, right? It's hard to
- 34:55Speaker 4: win a regular season title. It's hard to win the spectator.
- 34:58Speaker 4: So I would like to see the regular season champions
- 35:00Speaker 4: go in. So there's possible three. Like I say, you
- 35:05Speaker 4: got to win it anyway. And then I would like
- 35:07Speaker 4: to see the, and then also replaces the finals. It
- 35:10Speaker 4: also replaces the finals. And that's how, Because let's be honest, Brandon,
- 35:17Speaker 4: we see it all the time on social media since
- 35:19Speaker 4: this article's come out. And what's the one thing we saw? Well,
- 35:22Speaker 4: now the finals isn't going to mean anything, right? Like
- 35:24Speaker 4: now if you go to the finals and both teams
- 35:27Speaker 4: get in, what does that mean? Well, no, I want
- 35:29Speaker 4: to make the finals mean something. So if you win,
- 35:31Speaker 4: you're in. And then the finalists, it's up to a
- 35:35Speaker 4: wild card. And this is where I think it gets interesting.
- 35:38Speaker 3: I want the wild card teams. There's two wild cards
- 35:42Speaker 3: across the whole CHL.
- 35:44Speaker 4: And I want them to get voted in by National
- 35:47Speaker 4: Hockey League teams to benefit with the NHL-CHL partnership that
- 35:53Speaker 4: they have. I want to kind of tap into that
- 35:55Speaker 4: a little bit more. Just because if you can tap
- 35:57Speaker 4: into that, Brandon, in this new landscape, it's big for recruiting.
- 36:01Speaker 4: It's big for guys moving up for the draft. And
- 36:05Speaker 4: that in foremost, right, with the scouts and everything. So
- 36:08Speaker 4: maybe that, like a wild card. So right now I.
- 36:10Speaker 3: See regular season champions getting in. league champions getting in.
- 36:15Speaker 3: If that's six, that's six.
- 36:17Speaker 4: If there, if it's not, then it goes up for
- 36:19Speaker 4: a wildcard debate at a panel or NHL officials would
- 36:24Speaker 4: make that vote. But I would love to see that
- 36:26Speaker 4: kind of take place because one, it keeps it exciting.
- 36:29Speaker 4: And two, it makes your league championships mean something like
- 36:33Speaker 4: you're still going to buy to win the regular season.
- 36:35Speaker 3: But if you don't win the regular season, well, here
- 36:37Speaker 3: we go.
- 36:38Speaker 5: Right.
- 36:38Speaker 4: There's only, if you win, let's say you win the
- 36:40Speaker 4: regular season, And then you go and you finish second place.
- 36:46Speaker 3: In the regular season. You still got to work your
- 36:48Speaker 3: way there. You still have to work your way there, right?
- 36:51Speaker 3: And even if you do win the regular.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Season, it's not a lock to make the Memorial Cup,
- 36:56Speaker 4: which it just gives you an opportunity at the wildcard spot.
- 36:58Speaker 4: I would put it at that. You still got to
- 36:59Speaker 4: win your division. But, and you have to have the
- 37:02Speaker 4: best record in the postseason as well to earn a
- 37:05Speaker 4: wildcard spot if you win the regular season. But you
- 37:08Speaker 4: have a good shot at making it. I'd say your
- 37:09Speaker 4: chances are like 70% instead of zero, instead of, You
- 37:13Speaker 4: got to win the rounds. But that's kind of the
- 37:14Speaker 4: way I look at it. I would like to see
- 37:16Speaker 4: more pressure on winning a championship. More teams would buy
- 37:20Speaker 4: and have an opportunity, right? So that's kind of where
- 37:23Speaker 4: I look at it. I would like to see a
- 37:25Speaker 4: wild card. I think that would be really cool to see.
- 37:28Speaker 4: And on the same time, you're making your team win
- 37:31Speaker 4: a championship to mean something. If you go to the
- 37:33Speaker 4: finals and lose, you're not still in, right? It makes
- 37:37Speaker 4: our finals valuable. It makes our J-Ross valuable. Because just
- 37:41Speaker 4: because if you win the OHL championship and you get
- 37:43Speaker 4: beat out in the second round and you're the number
- 37:45Speaker 4: one team, doesn't mean you're going to the Memorial Cup.
- 37:48Speaker 4: So I think that's kind of, it puts pressure on
- 37:51Speaker 4: you to win, at least get to the conference final,
- 37:53Speaker 4: get to the finals, to even have a chance at
- 37:56Speaker 4: a wild card. So I kind of think that's the
- 37:59Speaker 4: way I kind of think of the thought process on this,
- 38:01Speaker 4: if they're going to adapt, but I really hope they
- 38:03Speaker 4: keep it the right way. I love the way our
- 38:05Speaker 4: championship is right now, the Memorial Cup. It's a long
- 38:09Speaker 4: season in, to be honest, the best team every year
- 38:12Speaker 4: wins Memorial cup. I know Saginaw, I know St. John
- 38:17Speaker 4: when they were hosts, but they won, they won. And
- 38:20Speaker 4: that's kind of what I think. That's what I kind
- 38:23Speaker 4: of think of the, where this landscape's at right now.
- 38:25Speaker 4: It'd be interesting to see what Mike thinks when he,
- 38:27Speaker 4: when he joins us, we'll have to ask him this question, Brandon,
- 38:30Speaker 4: what he thinks of this, because I'm so fascinated with it.
- 38:34Speaker 4: And hopefully you heard my example of, But I really
- 38:38Speaker 4: hope they don't switch the process. I like it the
- 38:40Speaker 4: right way it is now, but I really hope if
- 38:45Speaker 4: they're going to change it, make the championships mean something.
- 38:50Speaker 3: That's all I ask.
- 38:51Speaker 4: I don't want teams that make the finals just get
- 38:53Speaker 4: in because they made the finals.

- 40:55Speaker 1: Well, perfect segues.
- 40:57Speaker 2: We're going to welcome in on our guests now, and
- 41:02Speaker 2: that is the Kitchener Rangers team.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Voice on now 98.5 CKWR that would be the one
- 41:23Speaker 1: and the only Mike Farwell Mike also the host of
- 41:26Speaker 1: the OHL podcast another great weekly OHL podcast along with
- 41:30Speaker 1: ours that we Colin and I have been on as
- 41:32Speaker 1: guests as well a lot of fun with him and
- 41:34Speaker 1: Dan Meager as well so Mike really appreciate the time
- 41:37Speaker 1: tonight I'm sure and I think you already did talk
- 41:40Speaker 1: about this a little bit on your Fridays with Farwell
- 41:42Speaker 1: the Memorial Cup tournament and potentially expanding after 2028, uh,
- 41:48Speaker 1: first welcome. And I guess you can kind of join
- 41:50Speaker 1: in on your thoughts on that whole situation.
- 41:52Speaker 5: Thank you. Thank you for having me. Uh, it's always
- 41:56Speaker 5: great to be with you guys as an active participant
- 41:59Speaker 5: instead of just a passive listener. So nice to be
- 42:02Speaker 5: a part of the show. And I hate to start
- 42:04Speaker 5: this way. Like I hate it, but I'm going to
- 42:06Speaker 5: agree completely with Wardy here. Like what's going on if
- 42:09Speaker 5: Colin and I are same page in it here on
- 42:13Speaker 5: the OHL and 60, but I'm with you, Colin. I
- 42:18Speaker 5: know that the current format for the Memorial Cup is imperfect,
- 42:23Speaker 5: just like division alignment in the Ontario Hockey League is imperfect.
- 42:27Speaker 5: We need to see each other more. Exactly. Believe it
- 42:31Speaker 5: or not. There will always be these little imperfections, but
- 42:37Speaker 5: I'm with you big time on the meaningfulness of the
- 42:41Speaker 5: championships in each league. I've heard arguments that say, well,
- 42:46Speaker 5: you can't possibly water down a championship where you have
- 42:49Speaker 5: to go through 68 regular season games and then four
- 42:52Speaker 5: rounds of playoffs. And I understand that argument, but if
- 42:55Speaker 5: you're just letting the runner up kind of waltz in
- 42:58Speaker 5: with you, the reward for winning the championship is getting
- 43:02Speaker 5: to that tournament. And then that team that waltzes into
- 43:05Speaker 5: that tournament with you has the same champs at the
- 43:08Speaker 5: ultimate prize as you do. And I don't love that.
- 43:11Speaker 5: So is there room to tweak the format?
- 43:17Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 43:17Speaker 5: I'll tell you one thing that I'm really open to,
- 43:19Speaker 5: and I talked about this last week on the OHL podcast,
- 43:23Speaker 5: and it may be sacrilege in some areas, but just
- 43:25Speaker 5: having been to Kelowna for the Memorial Cup last May,
- 43:30Speaker 5: find me a better place in this country, truly. I mean,
- 43:33Speaker 5: Quebec City's pretty damn nice too, I'll give you that.
- 43:36Speaker 5: And there are other places, but even if I say
- 43:38Speaker 5: this as a Kitchener guy. Let's just say Kitchener had
- 43:41Speaker 5: won that bid, not Guelph for 2027, because I'm not
- 43:43Speaker 5: trying to knock Guelph. But neither Kitchener nor Guelph can
- 43:47Speaker 5: live up to Kelowna as a destination, as a site
- 43:51Speaker 5: for the Memorial Cup. So if there was a tweak
- 43:53Speaker 5: I was interested in, how about finding five, six, seven
- 43:58Speaker 5: different sites that just kind of rotate so that when
- 44:01Speaker 5: you go to the Memorial Cup, you have the kinds
- 44:04Speaker 5: of things to do outside the hockey that you had
- 44:06Speaker 5: to do in Kelowna, just a simply breathtaking place becomes
- 44:10Speaker 5: a tourist destination, all kinds of different things. It really
- 44:13Speaker 5: did add to the tournament itself, but I don't know
- 44:16Speaker 5: if I want to start adding more teams in here,
- 44:18Speaker 5: which you made a great point call in where I
- 44:20Speaker 5: agree with you a hundred percent again, isn't the season
- 44:23Speaker 5: long enough already. And we still go for this 10
- 44:27Speaker 5: day tournament, right? So, I don't know. I'm cautious when
- 44:31Speaker 5: it comes to tweaking the format. I know it's not perfect,
- 44:34Speaker 5: but I don't know that we're going to make it
- 44:36Speaker 5: a whole lot better with what's being proposed out there
- 44:38Speaker 5: right now.
- 44:39Speaker 4: How about with your host cities? Even if the host
- 44:42Speaker 4: doesn't play in the tournament, we have one extra wild card.
- 44:46Speaker 4: So it's like three teams, the three champions, and then
- 44:50Speaker 4: it's voted on by a panel of the CHL. I
- 44:52Speaker 4: mentioned the NHL beforehand. And the best fourth team, you
- 44:56Speaker 4: could say, fourth place, gets in to the tournament and
- 44:59Speaker 4: it rotates the cities as well. So let's say if
- 45:02Speaker 4: the host city doesn't have a good team, you still
- 45:04Speaker 4: have an opportunity to explore that city if you're the
- 45:06Speaker 4: CHL and have a host bubble type tournament for the
- 45:10Speaker 4: Memorial Cup there. What would you think of that if
- 45:12Speaker 4: you had like a wild card for that fourth city?
- 45:14Speaker 4: So let's say the host every seven years, if they
- 45:16Speaker 4: don't have an opportunity to have a successful roster on
- 45:19Speaker 4: the ice, they still have a chance to financially host
- 45:21Speaker 4: a tournament in a beautiful city like you mentioned Kelowna.
- 45:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I think we're on to something there. I don't
- 45:27Speaker 5: mind the wildcard idea and your suggestion that the NHL
- 45:32Speaker 5: sort of be a part of the selection committee for
- 45:34Speaker 5: that wildcard is interesting for the reasons that you mentioned.
- 45:37Speaker 5: Recruiting the new hockey landscape, et cetera, makes it a
- 45:40Speaker 5: pretty attractive place to be if the NHL is paying
- 45:43Speaker 5: this much attention to major junior hockey in Canada, right?
- 45:47Speaker 5: One of the imperfections of the Memorial Cup, and you
- 45:50Speaker 5: mentioned Saginaw, we can go back to Windsor, you talked
- 45:53Speaker 5: about St. John's, the host team in and of itself
- 45:57Speaker 5: makes it imperfect, but I just don't know how we
- 45:59Speaker 5: get around that because if you don't have a host team,
- 46:03Speaker 5: you've lost 50, 60, 70% of your interest in the games, right?
- 46:08Speaker 3: Your ticket sales. Yeah.
- 46:09Speaker 5: It's a hundred percent with the building.
- 46:11Speaker 4: Like we see what the, we see what the games
- 46:13Speaker 4: are like when it's the queue in the other dub
- 46:16Speaker 4: team here in Guelph, let's say for this year, we're
- 46:18Speaker 4: going to see those, that game.
- 46:20Speaker 3: And, It'll be interesting to see the attendance, right? Like
- 46:22Speaker 3: that's the one thing that's on the flip side.
- 46:25Speaker 5: And I will tell anybody who wants to listen to
- 46:27Speaker 5: this again, having just been there and maybe there's a
- 46:29Speaker 5: bias because I sort of had a horse in the
- 46:32Speaker 5: race in so far as the team I was covering
- 46:34Speaker 5: was a part of the tournament, but I was at
- 46:36Speaker 5: every game every night and it was fantastic. Like Kelowna
- 46:40Speaker 5: put on a great show. Prospera place put on a
- 46:42Speaker 5: good show. The committee that ran the whole thing in
- 46:45Speaker 5: Kelowna put on, a terrific show. I'm sure Guelph will
- 46:48Speaker 5: as well. Anybody, if you're a junior hockey fan, don't,
- 46:51Speaker 5: don't pick and choose your package. Get in there and
- 46:53Speaker 5: enjoy every game. Cause this is the best hockey likely
- 46:58Speaker 5: you're going to see all season long. Right? So it's
- 47:01Speaker 5: well worth it from where I'm sitting.
- 47:03Speaker 4: Hey, we say it all the time. Don't watch these
- 47:06Speaker 4: kids play now for $ 30 because, and you got to
- 47:08Speaker 4: pay 200 and something to go to an NHL game.
- 47:10Speaker 4: Look at Matthew Schaefer, for instance, with the Erie, right?
- 47:13Speaker 4: Like you see a lot of good players in the league.
- 47:16Speaker 4: and you pay $ 30 now, but it's going to be
- 47:19Speaker 4: double that triple that quadruple that in the coming years
- 47:22Speaker 4: for sure.
- 47:24Speaker 5: Absolutely. I've, I've been hearing that argument for 20 plus
- 47:27Speaker 5: years in this league and it still makes sense since
- 47:30Speaker 5: Cody Hodgson and Matt Duchesne were playing for the Brampton battalion.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Okay.
- 47:35Speaker 5: That's when I started.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 5: You could see him for 25 bucks in Brampton tonight
- 47:40Speaker 5: or 250 bucks in Toronto tomorrow. So take your pick.
- 47:43Speaker 5: It is, it is tremendous value for your dollar. And
- 47:46Speaker 5: I'm not here to carry water for the league. I'm
- 47:48Speaker 5: really not, but it's, it's really tough to beat that.
- 47:50Speaker 5: It's really tough to beat.
- 47:51Speaker 3: We had to fix the OHL at one point in
- 47:53Speaker 3: this episode. Oh, we had to.
- 47:56Speaker 5: Our job, our job here is done, Wardy.
- 47:58Speaker 1: We're good.
- 47:58Speaker 3: All right, BC, I'm muting. Yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 1: We had quite the discussion on the OHL podcast with,
- 48:05Speaker 1: with Mike Farr. We'll give him another plug there, but
- 48:07Speaker 1: we'll give you, we'll give you a plug at the end, Mike,
- 48:09Speaker 1: to talk about the great stuff you do and, And
- 48:11Speaker 1: we have great love between us all.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 48:13Speaker 1: There's no animosity between the two shows. We're not going
- 48:16Speaker 1: at it here. We love each other. You know, there, there's,
- 48:19Speaker 1: there's no bad blood here. So, um, you know, we,
- 48:22Speaker 1: and maybe people would want that, but again, we're not
- 48:24Speaker 1: going to give them the, the, the entertainment for that. So, uh,
- 48:27Speaker 1: with that, Mike, I mean, talking about Kelowna, that was
- 48:29Speaker 1: sort of where I wanted to go with my first
- 48:30Speaker 1: question for you, because obviously that was a special run
- 48:32Speaker 1: last year for the Kitchener Rangers. Uh, and again, winning
- 48:35Speaker 1: the OHL championship last season, uh, was big in and
- 48:39Speaker 1: of itself and and you're you know being involved with
- 48:41Speaker 1: that and and being able to have that final call
- 48:43Speaker 1: I'm sure it was a lifelong you know dream for
- 48:46Speaker 1: you you know obviously with everything Don Cameron did as
- 48:50Speaker 1: the voice of the Rangers before obviously you you got
- 48:52Speaker 1: that opportunity so that was special but also what was
- 48:56Speaker 1: that whole experience of going out to Kelowna and you
- 48:58Speaker 1: mentioned just the theatrics of it and and you know
- 49:01Speaker 1: just the I guess the whole city of in and
- 49:04Speaker 1: of itself but When you look back on it now
- 49:07Speaker 1: in October, looking back to the end of May and
- 49:10Speaker 1: early June there, I'm sure despite not having much sleep,
- 49:14Speaker 1: it was probably a special moment, not just because Kitchener
- 49:16Speaker 1: ended up winning the Memorial Cup tournament, but as a whole.
- 49:19Speaker 1: like what are your biggest memories or takeaways from that
- 49:22Speaker 1: that two weeks you were there well i'll.
- 49:25Speaker 5: I'll kind of add on to something that you mentioned
- 49:27Speaker 5: when you talked about there not being any beef between
- 49:31Speaker 5: these two podcasts we all want to see each other
- 49:33Speaker 5: succeed although if you want to manufacture something like i'm
- 49:35Speaker 5: here for it i'll play your heel anytime you guys
- 49:38Speaker 5: want okay but I've said this so many times since May,
- 49:41Speaker 5: and this is where it connects to what you said about,
- 49:44Speaker 5: you know, the two podcasts can coexist and we can
- 49:46Speaker 5: all get along. I hope, and I mean this sincerely,
- 49:50Speaker 5: I hope every one of my colleagues in this league,
- 49:53Speaker 5: and we know that it's second nature for Mike Stubbs
- 49:57Speaker 5: in London, okay, because he does this every three or
- 49:59Speaker 5: four years, right? But I want every one of my
- 50:02Speaker 5: colleagues that covers this league to get the chance to
- 50:05Speaker 5: be a part of a Memorial cup. So Dylan Baker,
- 50:08Speaker 5: I've been teasing him in Guelph all since last year.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Cause he's a, he's a newbie and in a second
- 50:12Speaker 5: year in the league, he's going to get to have
- 50:14Speaker 5: a Memorial cup as the storm being host, but it
- 50:17Speaker 5: is really a special experience. You guys love this league.
- 50:20Speaker 5: I could hear the passion and Colin's voice talking about
- 50:23Speaker 5: the proposed changes to the Memorial cup and all these
- 50:25Speaker 5: different things, the 30 bucks today or 300 bucks tomorrow.
- 50:28Speaker 5: We love this league. And, To be in that Memorial Cup,
- 50:32Speaker 5: to be a part of that experience, embedded in it,
- 50:35Speaker 5: in that city for 10 days, it really is incredible stuff.
- 50:40Speaker 5: You mentioned Don Cameron the number of times I thought
- 50:43Speaker 5: back about my time with him when he would have
- 50:46Speaker 5: been calling those Memorial Cups back in 82, in 2003, 2008.
- 50:49Speaker 5: I thought about every one of them, every bit of it.
- 50:59Speaker 5: And the experience itself is, it's just terrific. If I
- 51:04Speaker 5: had a complaint, the only complaint that I had, and
- 51:07Speaker 5: I mentioned this to the team, they put it away
- 51:10Speaker 5: too early. There was no drama left by the end, right?
- 51:13Speaker 5: The Rangers are up. They get a late second period goal.
- 51:16Speaker 5: So they're up 3-1 going to the third. Not a
- 51:19Speaker 5: runaway by any stretch. But they started the third with
- 51:22Speaker 5: a five on three power play. Bang, bang. It's 5-1
- 51:26Speaker 5: just over a minute into the third period.
- 51:28Speaker 3: I knew.
- 51:29Speaker 5: I think everybody knew this one's done. It's toast. So
- 51:32Speaker 5: all of a sudden I've got 19 minutes to just
- 51:35Speaker 5: wait for the, like the clock could not have run
- 51:38Speaker 5: any slower. I'm like, can we please just, and so
- 51:41Speaker 5: it was a little bit anticlimactic that way. And I
- 51:43Speaker 5: talked to Jack Pridham about it afterwards, who scored one
- 51:46Speaker 5: of those third period power play goals. And he said,
- 51:49Speaker 5: that was, that was the plan at intermission. Like we've
- 51:51Speaker 5: got this opportunity, go out and put the final nail
- 51:54Speaker 5: in Everett's coffin. And that's not to take away from
- 51:56Speaker 5: the silver tips. They had a great team. a great tournament.
- 51:59Speaker 5: They're a great organization, but the Rangers just, they were
- 52:02Speaker 5: the better team and they pounded those two goals in
- 52:04Speaker 5: so quickly in the third period that it was just
- 52:07Speaker 5: watching the clock. And then I'm like, well, like there
- 52:09Speaker 5: was just, there was no added drama to it whatsoever.
- 52:12Speaker 5: But I think that just shows how dominant the team was.
- 52:15Speaker 5: And it certainly just gave me a chance to drink
- 52:18Speaker 5: it all in because by seven minutes left, you're just
- 52:22Speaker 5: starting to tell stories, right? It was our 90th game,
- 52:25Speaker 5: not including preseason and, 90th game of the season, right?
- 52:28Speaker 5: Things had happened along the way. Just start getting into
- 52:31Speaker 5: story time, and then you count down the clock with
- 52:33Speaker 5: the fans that you know were listening back home, and
- 52:36Speaker 5: you celebrate the third Memorial Cup in Kitchener Rangers history.
- 52:39Speaker 5: Phenomenal stuff. I really do hope everybody gets to experience it.
- 52:42Speaker 1: Kitchener Rangers radio play-by-play voice Mike Farr was with us. Colin,
- 52:45Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 52:46Speaker 3: Got goosebumps hearing that, Mike. I mean, I got to
- 52:48Speaker 3: mention this to you. I mean, speaking with the.
- 52:50Speaker 4: Global ambassador, Josh Brown, I'm not paying– he doesn't pay
- 52:55Speaker 4: us anything– It doesn't slide in a fiver or whatever.
- 52:59Speaker 5: He better start. You guys, listen, let me tell you
- 53:02Speaker 5: about that guy. I've been on press row with that
- 53:03Speaker 5: guy for about 15 years now, okay? He does not
- 53:06Speaker 5: deserve all of the love he gets from you knuckleheads.
- 53:09Speaker 5: Stop it already. No, I'm kidding.
- 53:10Speaker 3: There's a rivalry. There you go.
- 53:13Speaker 5: You want beef, come to the press box in Kitchener.
- 53:15Speaker 3: I'll see you in a couple months. A couple months,
- 53:17Speaker 3: I'll be there.
- 53:19Speaker 4: You know, that team had so much character last year.
- 53:21Speaker 3: The deadline, you make a deal with the dreaded London Knights.
- 53:25Speaker 3: and it's sam.
- 53:26Speaker 4: O'reilly and jared woolley coming over the impact sam o'reilly
- 53:31Speaker 4: had right from the get-go was the massive on the
- 53:34Speaker 4: rangers i mean that looking back at it that's the
- 53:36Speaker 4: championship move every year gm makes a deal and that's
- 53:39Speaker 4: when you look back hey that's why we one of
- 53:41Speaker 4: the main reasons why we won and that felt like
- 53:43Speaker 4: the championship move last year what was it like when
- 53:46Speaker 4: he came in did you kind of get a sense
- 53:48Speaker 4: that hey things are happening here like you saw the change.
- 53:53Speaker 5: Yes, but not right away because I was reluctant and
- 53:58Speaker 5: once bitten, twice shy or twice bitten, three times shy.
- 54:01Speaker 5: Take your pick. I have PTSD from Rangers trades with
- 54:06Speaker 5: the London Knights.
- 54:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 54:07Speaker 5: It goes back to the 08 championship that we were
- 54:10Speaker 5: hosting in Kitchener and made the trade for Steve Mason.
- 54:14Speaker 5: And there were rumblings that Mason was, you know, had
- 54:17Speaker 5: tweaked something at the world juniors that year, but everything
- 54:20Speaker 5: was going to be fine. And Pete DeBoer, rarely makes
- 54:22Speaker 5: a misstep that was the guy he wanted and of
- 54:25Speaker 5: course steve mason the injury kept him out of the
- 54:29Speaker 5: memorial cup and and would it have been different for
- 54:33Speaker 5: the kitchener rangers in 08 some years later the rangers
- 54:37Speaker 5: a young rangers team makes a trade with the london
- 54:40Speaker 5: knights for paxton larue because this young rangers team needs
- 54:44Speaker 5: a heavyweight to just kind of keep things on an
- 54:47Speaker 5: even keel. Now, everybody knew LaRue had been battling some injuries,
- 54:51Speaker 5: but he got a clean bill of health and his
- 54:52Speaker 5: first shift with the Kitch-Air Rangers, it's like he blows
- 54:56Speaker 5: out the shoulder and that's it. So, yeah, Sam O'Reilly,
- 55:01Speaker 5: Jared Woolley, Guys with back-to-back Ontario Hockey League championships. Why
- 55:07Speaker 5: wouldn't you want them? But I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 55:09Speaker 5: what's going to happen? What injury is going to emerge here?
- 55:13Speaker 5: It took me about three games to get over that,
- 55:15Speaker 5: just watching the way Sam O'Reilly went about business. And
- 55:18Speaker 5: that's on the ice and off the ice. And I'll
- 55:22Speaker 5: tie this into the Guelph Storm. Look, I got a
- 55:24Speaker 5: lot of time for George Burnett. This guy has built
- 55:27Speaker 5: winners before. He's building one again right now. We all
- 55:31Speaker 5: know he's not yet done but the players that he
- 55:34Speaker 5: has brought in one of the missing ingredients and in
- 55:37Speaker 5: fairness these players don't grow on trees when you want
- 55:39Speaker 5: to go on to the trade market but they don't
- 55:42Speaker 5: have the championship experience these guys Sam O'Reilly and Jared
- 55:47Speaker 5: Woolley might as well have walked into the Kitchener Memorial
- 55:50Speaker 5: Auditorium carrying the J. Ross Robertson trophy with them because
- 55:54Speaker 5: that's just the that's the presence that they had and
- 55:57Speaker 5: and the influence on the team is really hard to
- 56:01Speaker 5: put into words. But having that championship experience, then we knew.
- 56:05Speaker 5: We all knew, like, okay, the deal, first of all,
- 56:07Speaker 5: with the arch rival, division foe, the London Knights, and
- 56:11Speaker 5: the caliber of players, you're like, man, Mike McKenzie, he's
- 56:15Speaker 5: meant it before, he really means it this time. Absolutely.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike, and just everything that went into that season,
- 56:23Speaker 1: obviously winning an OHL championship and a Memorial Cup, was
- 56:27Speaker 1: massive that was your first time obviously being able to
- 56:30Speaker 1: call a championship like that and and just everything that
- 56:33Speaker 1: came with that moment uh just you know when you
- 56:35Speaker 1: look back on what last season will be i'm sure
- 56:37Speaker 1: you'll remember for the rest of your life but just
- 56:39Speaker 1: personally for you you know growing up you know bleeding
- 56:43Speaker 1: kitchener blue like how special was that for you and
- 56:46Speaker 1: just everybody involved in your your circle about uh just
- 56:50Speaker 1: that whole experience of what last season was So if
- 56:53Speaker 1: I may, I'll.
- 56:54Speaker 5: Start with a quick Don Cameron story that is related.
- 56:58Speaker 5: I was working OHL in Guelph when the Rangers won
- 57:03Speaker 5: in 03. Guelph went to the Memorial Cup in 04.
- 57:08Speaker 5: I was working in Guelph then. And after that season,
- 57:11Speaker 5: Guelph didn't win a game at that Memorial Cup in Kelowna,
- 57:14Speaker 5: of all places. And then after that season, I came
- 57:17Speaker 5: to my hometown of Kitchener, started broadcasting Kitchener Rangers hockey.
- 57:20Speaker 5: So I was in the booth. with Don Cameron for
- 57:24Speaker 5: the 08 Memorial Cup. Obviously, Don is the guy that
- 57:29Speaker 5: called those games. But that's the year that Spokane won
- 57:34Speaker 5: and the trophy broke. And Don, if you knew anything
- 57:39Speaker 5: about him, he always talked on a Sunday game, you know,
- 57:42Speaker 5: we've been to the church of our choice and now
- 57:44Speaker 5: we're going to play some hockey. That was kind of
- 57:46Speaker 5: a Sunday phrase of Don's, the church of your choice.
- 57:49Speaker 5: And he was a devout man. never missed a Sunday service.
- 57:53Speaker 5: Even on the road, he'd find a church to go
- 57:55Speaker 5: to near the hotel we were staying. So the trophy
- 57:59Speaker 5: breaks and out of the devout Don Cameron's mouth comes,
- 58:05Speaker 5: oh my God, they broke the trophy. And for Don saying,
- 58:09Speaker 5: oh my God, live on the air, was a bridge
- 58:12Speaker 5: too far. Now, I mean, you listen to my mouth sometimes,
- 58:14Speaker 5: not just on the podcast, but on the air. I'm like,
- 58:17Speaker 5: it's technically, I'm doing post-game shows. I'm calling people dumbass.
- 58:20Speaker 5: You know, it's like, it's 10 o'clock on a Friday night.
- 58:22Speaker 5: Who cares? AM radio, blah, blah. Anyway, Don had to
- 58:26Speaker 5: draw himself back and apologize. He apologized on the air
- 58:30Speaker 5: for his outburst because he said, oh my God, Don,
- 58:33Speaker 5: the trophy just broke before our very eyes. Like this,
- 58:37Speaker 5: it's okay that you uttered those words. To get around
- 58:41Speaker 5: directly to your question, Brandon, it was something that when
- 58:45Speaker 5: I woke up on Sunday, May the 31st, the day
- 58:49Speaker 5: of the final, I had all this nervous energy. I
- 58:53Speaker 5: was up early. I still hadn't really adjusted to the
- 58:56Speaker 5: time change, but whatever. I got up early. I took
- 58:58Speaker 5: a hike up a mountain near the hotel. Again, I'll
- 59:01Speaker 5: just come back to please put Memorial Cups in places
- 59:04Speaker 5: like Kelowna. Like you go hike a mountain before you
- 59:07Speaker 5: go to the final game of the Memorial Cup, right?
- 59:10Speaker 5: It was fantastic.
- 59:12Speaker 1: What's that?
- 59:12Speaker 3: The hocus was with you pregame.
- 59:14Speaker 5: No, no. Listen, you think I can keep up with
- 59:17Speaker 5: that guy? Not a chance. He's an animal. He's a
- 59:23Speaker 5: complete freak of nature. No, I was all by myself
- 59:26Speaker 5: with my own thoughts and my own anxiety that was
- 59:30Speaker 5: starting to build because all I could think about was
- 59:34Speaker 5: the 89 games as a team that we had played
- 59:38Speaker 5: so far, going back to the beginning of the season,
- 59:41Speaker 5: the playoff run, the three games of the round robin
- 59:44Speaker 5: that the Rangers won every one of at the Memorial Cup.
- 59:48Speaker 5: And in my mind, I just kept thinking, but what if?
- 59:52Speaker 5: what if they, they have an off night? What if
- 59:55Speaker 5: Sam O'Reilly isn't Superman? He's just kind of Batman for
- 59:58Speaker 5: the night. And then it just doesn't work out, you know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: whatever it was. And I'm just like, then it's all,
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: it's all for naught. And of course the game turned
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: out the way that the game turned out. But from that,
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: from that morning, all through the day, I was just
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: thinking about the history of the franchise, the opportunity that
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: I'd been given to call games for my hometown team,
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: work with a legend, like Don Cameron, all of these
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: things were going through my mind. Brian Bellows, like I
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: grew up in Kitchener. I was going to the Kitchener
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: Memorial Auditorium when Al McInnes and Scott Stevens were on
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: the blue line. Don Beaupre was in goal. Like I'm just,
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: all of these things are like the weight of all
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: of this, the franchise's history on my shoulders. The game
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: couldn't start soon enough for me. And as much as
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: I joked earlier about the anticlimactic finish, I'll take it, baby.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: I'll take 19 minutes of just breathing on the air
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: and being allowed to tell some stories about the season.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: Absolutely. I mean, it's special.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: And Mike, definitely well-deserved not to call the game like that.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: You've worked your butt off for that. So definitely really
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: cool to be able to hear your call like that.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: And it's cool to hear these stories about building up
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: the energy. But I got to get to this year.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: Rivalry weekend this week. I think it's a great initiative
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: by the OHL to have a rivalry weekend. I think
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: it's better than these ch these quebec ohl games these
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: out of conference game preseason games i think rivalry weekend
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: is the one of the best weekends in the regular
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: season and the rangers had one with the guelph storm
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: it felt like it felt like sunday was two games
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: in one where the rangers are down next thing you
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: know they're back next thing you know it's all over
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: the map what's been your impressions one with the rangers
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: season so far two what's your thoughts on rivalry weekend.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: First of all, are you trying to get me going
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: by talking about those cross league games? Because if you
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: want to talk, what's that?
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: I'm not a fan.
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: Oh, you, you want to talk about things we need
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: to fix in this damn league. Like let's go. Hey, Mr. Crawford, Oh, Wardy.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: And I've got one meeting, one meeting. Well, you can't,
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: you can't let some teams, you can't let some teams
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: play the Quebec league and everybody else. Anyway, we got
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: to have a meeting with exactly. It's all we need.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: The camera in a meeting. maybe after 10 on am
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: i even better because we can we can call him
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: a dumb ass if we want to i don't know
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: i mean i don't know if that's i know i
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: don't know if that's proper language to use for the
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: commissioner but we can use that kind of language back
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: and forth croft you can come at us like that
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: too for sure uh i love rivalry week i absolutely
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: love it i i said last season when i i
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: didn't really think much of it until it had come
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: and gone and i loved it and i said The
- 1:02:39Speaker 5: OHL gave us the idea of the thing that we
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: didn't know we needed or whatever it was. I feel
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: that way again this year. I was actually looking forward
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: to it because I enjoyed it so much last year.
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: Huge win for the OHL. Great idea.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Keep that.
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: Get rid of the cross-league games, please and thank you.
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: And what did I think of the Rangers this weekend? Listen,
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: if it's one thing we've said from... day one, I
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: can think of, I think it was the fourth or
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: fifth game. I'm going to forget the opponent, but one
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: time in the first 10 games or so, you would
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: look at the Ranger team and say, they didn't give
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: you the effort that they had been giving in those
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: other games. Look, there are ponies in the stable as
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: opposed to thoroughbreds this year. We all understand that. And
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: when you go on a run, like the Rangers went
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: on last year, you get a whole lot of grace
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: from the fans. I think anyway, you certainly get grace
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: from the broadcasters. Cause I'm like, ah, these guys are
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: out there. They're working their tails off. You win some,
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: you lose some.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: But I'll tell you that, that work ethic has again,
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: maybe one game where you didn't see it for the
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: full 60. Other than that, 14 out of 15, they're
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: playing their tails off. And, and all of a sudden
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: it seems they're getting rewarded for it. I actually said
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: this to a buddy just the other day. I hope
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: this past weekend for Kitchener, doesn't go to their heads.
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: I mean, you want to see hard work get rewarded
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: and the Rangers are working hard without getting rewarded, right?
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: They were on a five game skid, a game they
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: lost in the Sioux in overtime. They shouldn't have lost,
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: but a bad bounce cost them. They have a shootout
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: loss to the London Knights, five straight losses. And you're
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: starting to kind of marinate in your own stink a
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: little bit here thinking we're working hard. We're not getting rewarded.
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: All of a sudden now you've got points in five
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: straight games and you went toe to toe with with
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: the CHL's top ranked team for a weekend. And the
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: best part for me, you talk about two games in
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: one on that Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Center. Agreed.
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: I mean, it's a tight game through one. The Storms
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: score early like they did on Friday night in Kitchener.
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: They have a one goal lead after one. And then
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: in the second, bang, bang, two shorties, nine seconds apart,
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: 4-1 Guelph. And you think, well, that's it. This Ranger
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: team is just going to fold up and go home.
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: And next thing you know, It's 5-5 with a late
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: goal by the Rangers, and you're going to overtime. This
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: team doesn't quit. And some of the players that have
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: been a part of this team for a few years
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: and gained that valuable experience last season with the run,
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: Tanner Lamb, Luca Romano, Cameron Arquette, are starting to carry
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: some mail here for the Kitchener Rangers, and they're getting
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: rewarded for the effort. I think it's great to see.
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: I'm not promising... an ohl championship or another run at
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: a memorial cup this year but the the culture that
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: was established over the past three years under uc hocus
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: continues to pay dividends today with the kitchener rangers at
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: least from my viewpoint.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Yeah mike you mentioned seven of a possible eight points
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: over their last four games and they're sitting right in
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: the middle of that western conference right now fifth place
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: you know as you mentioned coming off of a of
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: an ohl championship there it doesn't look like they're having
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: much of a hangover with it right obviously a high
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: roster turnover, you know, new head coach at the helm.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: A lot of players graduated onto the pros last this season.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: So a brand new Kitchener Rangers team with some of
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: those leftovers, as you mentioned with the Tanner Lambs and
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: the Luca Romanos, but you know, just after you go
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: through a process like that, where you're the best team
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: in the Ontario hockey league, and then you have to
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: sort of rebuild and restock a little bit. I know
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: the NCAA agreement has helped with be able to sign some,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: some college free agents or guys that have commitments to
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: colleges and and things like that to maybe try to
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: make yourself a little bit more competitive. But like, is
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: this a little bit maybe ahead of schedule of where
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: you thought the Rangers would be coming off of the
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: OHL championship? Or do you think that, you know, a
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: four to six seating in the Western conference would be
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: a successful season for them?
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: True story. I had them right in that range. I
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: didn't think they would be as high as four to
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: start the playoffs on home ice, but sixth would have
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: been the low end for me coming into the season. Now, Again,
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: we're not even quite a quarter of the way through yet.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: And I will add that this weekend coming is going
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: to be a little bit of an equalizer, if you will,
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: because the Rangers have currently played more games than any
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: other team in this Ontario Hockey League. This weekend coming,
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: the Rangers play just once, and it's not an easy team.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: They've got the Flint Firebirds in town. But other teams
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: will start to catch up in the number of games played.
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: And if they, of course, are successful with those quote-unquote
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: games in hand, we'll see what the standings look like
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: another week and a half to two weeks from now
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: as the rest of the league begins catching up in
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: terms of the number of games. But would I say
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: this is ahead of schedule? No. But you touched on something, Brandon,
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: when you talked about the ability to recruit players out
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: of the United States. Charlie Puglisi would be an example.
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: He's signed by Nashville now, or not signed yet, but
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: drafted by Nashville. You know, you've got a guy like
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: Hayden Ellis that is sticking around this league and some others.
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: But going back to that 08 championship that I referenced
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: earlier when the Rangers lost the Memorial Cup final on
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: home ice, that was Pete DeBoer's last year in Kitchener
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: as the head coach and general manager. And believe you me,
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: he left the cupboards empty. So I've watched this team
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: go through a year like the 08-09 season when There
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: was very little hope. I saw them go through it
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: again just after Steve Spot left when he loaded up
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: and the Rangers didn't get all the way in 2012-13.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: And then they had a really down year. And I
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: mean down years. I think the 0-9 team had 22 wins?
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: Something.
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: Anyway, this team I don't think was ever going to
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: be that. They're not going to be world beaters, although
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: they looked like it this past weekend. But let's see
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: how the standings kind of settle in. after the other
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: teams start catching up in terms of games played. And
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: don't forget the opportunity that the Rangers do have. They've
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: only got one overager on their team. And there are
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: a few guys out there playing in other places right
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: now that could come back to the Ontario Hockey League, right?
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: Gabe Sherratt's out in the American Hockey League with Abbotsford.
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: You got Luke Ellenis with the Belleville Sens. Heck, Jared
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: Woolley could. I mean, it's very, very unlikely. But, you know,
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: so there's room on the Ranger roster for some returnees
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: that could make things even more interesting in Kitchener.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: Yeah, you get a little bit of a boost.
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: And it's funny, you mentioned there's a core there right
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: now that experienced last year's winning season. And it carries
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: momentum into this season. alexander belecky with the offseason he
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: had his his development and i mean that's the beauty
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: of our league when you see a kid come in
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: like that and show promise and get an opportunity i'm
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: sure it was like sitting right in the middle of
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: the dressing room last year you got your defensive core
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: cameron reed you got all these superstars on the back
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: end and then you look at the forwards that come
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: in every day at practice you're going up against sam
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: o'reilly What's that story been like for you watching his
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: developments and coming into the league? I mean, he's got
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: 14 points and 13 games already. Like he's been incredible
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: and his development just continues to trend upwards.
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: So because of something you just said, I'm going to
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: add another name in and then go deeper on Bilecki.
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: But Caden Schneider is a guy that's just been kind
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: of hanging around. Great teammate, rarely saw ice. You look
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: at him this year with more ice time and more
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: responsibility and you cannot convince me that playing against or
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: practicing against the Sam O'Reillys of the world last season
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: didn't do wonders for Caden Schneider, a guy that we
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: thought might have been a bubble player for this league.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: The development in his game, the leap he has taken,
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: must have had something to do with practicing against guys
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: like O'Reilly and all those other high-end players the Rangers
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: had last season. On Bilecki, which is the point of
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: your question, I'll be honest with you, when the rankings
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: came out, the rankings from Central Scouting, mid last season
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: and had Bilecki in and around the third round. I thought, yep,
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: that's about right for this guy that we've seen now
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: for a year, a season and a half in Kitchener.
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: But it was almost like when those rankings came out,
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: Bilecki wanted to prove them wrong. But because the, the,
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: the change or the trajectory that he went on from
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: there was pretty incredible. And again, he's, he's with a
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: pretty deep blue line, right? You got the Cameron Reeds,
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: you got the Jared Woolies, you got the Matt Andonofskis,
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: et cetera. So he has a great opportunity to learn
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: from these guys, quarterback power play number two, et cetera,
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: practice with these guys. But the trajectory was pretty incredible.
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: And all of a sudden I'm around rinks and the
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: playoffs are going on and people are starting to talk.
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: I talked to one scout. I remember vividly saying, ah,
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: we're picking late in the second round. I don't think
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: he's still going to be there.
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: I'm like, really?
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: Alexander Bilecki, who like six weeks ago was projected kind
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: of mid-pack third round guy. And now you're saying late second,
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: he's not going to be there, but that, and that's
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: not me talking. That's the, that's the buzz around the
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: rink when you're talking to scouts and obviously fully deserving.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: How much do I love it that he ended up
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: with my Leafs? Let me tell you all about that
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: for sure. But watching, I know I'm sorry, BC, but.
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: Four in a row, baby.
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: Four in a row.
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: And, Wardy, I heard you last week. I heard you
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: running down. Oh, leaves, falling leaves, falling leaves.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: And what did you say?
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: Four in a row. That's fine.
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: That's fine. Hey, hey, hey. They should be thanking me.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: Keep it up. They should be thanking me.
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: Bilecki has been an absolute treat. And it's funny. I
- 1:12:21Speaker 5: joked with him on Sunday before the game that I
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: had money on the board for him Friday night to score.
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: It was a friendly wager up in the broadcast booth.
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: But I said, this guy's due. He's doing everything but score.
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: And he must have had three, four glorious chances, including
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: a crossbar. And so I saw him on Sunday. I said, Billsy,
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: you cost.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: Me on Friday.
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: I had money on the board for you. I said,
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: I thought you're finally going to get your first. He said, yeah,
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: but you know, I had chances and it's going to
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: come eventually. And what did he do? Went out on
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: Sunday and scored the first goal. He's been, he's been terrific.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: The maturity on that answer too is impressive. Like to
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: say that while I'm getting my chances, a lot of
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: kids at that age, like they're not, they get in chances,
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: but they're not going in for the first time in
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: their lives. Cause they're always superstars wherever they come from.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: And for the first time in their lives, you're just
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: not going in. And then all of a sudden it's like, Oh,
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: you know, it's a maturity of that answer.
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: That's really impressive too.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: So, Mike, the last Rangers-related question I have for you
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: is the goaltending. Jason Schaubel, obviously, Jeff Kurzak must trust
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: him with what he's done so far this season. But,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: I mean, when you look at it, you're replacing Christian
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Kirsch last season and the year before that with Jackson Parsons.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: It's quite the shoes to fill within the Rangers' net
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: over the last few seasons. How do you think Schaubel
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: has kind of been up to that challenge so far?
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: 12 games this season, 6-3, 2-1 record. And, you know,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: I guess, is that... Is that something that the Rangers
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: expected from him to be the guy that carries the
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: load here this season? Or I guess what has been
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: the thoughts from the Rangers goaltending so far this year?
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: This guy, Jason Schaubel, was ready to be the starter
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: midway through last season. He might have even been ready
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: to be the starter in his first season. And you
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: guys know goalies as well as anyone else. They have
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: to carry a certain amount of swagger and a certain
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: amount of confidence, right? You cannot, you cannot play the
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: position without that, at least in my opinion, but also
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: a terrific teammate. So he knew his role was to
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: be there when it was time for the number one
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: guy to get a night off and to be a
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: sponge and learn from these guys and, and the opportunity
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: along the way, not just learning from the other goaltenders,
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: but Jordan to court, the goaltending coach, Jake Patterson in
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: now as the goaltending coach, but Shabba was absolutely ready
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: for this. And I think you need to look no
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: further than than this past Friday night against the Guelph
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: Storm when Jason Schaubel put on as good a goaltending
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: performance as you will see in the league this season.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: I don't think that's being Homer. I think that's just
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: a fact. 34 saves on 37 shots against. But of
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: those 34 saves, 6, 7, 8, 10 bell saves by
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: this guy, including the highlight of the night that I'm
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: sure everybody has seen by now, lunging back to steal
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: a sure goal from the Storm. The numbers are not
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: going to tell the whole story here because... Jackson Parsons
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: and Christian Kirsch benefited from a much differently constructed Kitchener
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: Rangers team. You've got a younger blue line right now
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: with Andrew McNeil out of the Rangers lineup. We talked
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: about Alexander Bilecki a moment ago and that's it. It's
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: Alexander Bilecki and a bunch of strangers out there with
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: very little OHL experience on the blue line. That's a hard,
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: it's a hard league to play in the older you
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: get much less guys that, don't even have 30 games
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: of OHL experience. So the numbers I don't think from
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: Schaubel will tell the entire story because it's a different
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: team that he's playing behind. But this guy has proven
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: that he can do it even with this team. And
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: he's just going to get better as the seasons go on.
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: Absolutely ready to carry the mail for the Kitchener Rangers
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: this year and in the next year too.
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: Mike, my last question for you. I appreciate you taking
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: the time. Congrats, by the way, again, on all the success.
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: you had broadcasting that past this past season in your
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: career so far.
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: I mean, you've been great to listen to.
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: I always look forward to hearing your podcast, hearing your
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: calls and obviously Bulldogs Rangers games are always, it's a
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: great part. You and seeing Josh Brown, obviously it's always
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: a blast. And I hope, I hope you can get
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: me that a Bulldogs thing in the media room, the
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: little glass or silver statue that they had, like the plaques.
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: Those things are sweet. And I remember last year, joking
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: with Josh, I want that so badly. If the Bulldogs
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: one never goes missing, I got it.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: They're great in the job.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: But I got to ask you, because something that I
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: think you do really well is how you manage your
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: social media. And social media in the OHL is a jungle.
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: There's a lot that goes on. What's your biggest piece
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: of advice on how to manage social media in this
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: day and age? Because a lot of people in our
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: league struggle with it. And there's obviously a lot of
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: different opinions now in the league on social media. how
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: do you handle that? And what's your biggest piece of advice?
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: Oh, that is, that is a great question. And I
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: really appreciate you saying how well I handle it because
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: it's hard. I don't think that's all it, but that,
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: and that hasn't always been the case. I I'll be
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: the first to admit that if the history is on
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: the internet, you can go, I don't delete anything. If
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: I put it out there, I put it out there.
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: So have at it. But I like to think that
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: I have found a happy place if you will, when
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: it comes to, To my social media for the OHL.
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: And there's two pieces of advice that I will give
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: anyone who is interested in listening. The question was asked,
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: number one, be yourself because you're the best person at
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: being that person, right? Just be who you are. Don't
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: try to be a shock jock. Don't try to be
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: somebody that you're not. Unless you are a Don Cherry,
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: then go ahead and be Don Cherry. But be yourself,
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: number one. And number two, it might be a 1A.
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: following directly behind Be Yourself, don't. Just don't go into
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: the muck. It's not worth it. Even if we can
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: go 280 characters at a time now, it doesn't matter.
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: Don't go into the muck. So just be yourself and
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: don't go into the muck. I like now, in my older, wiser,
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: more mature times, and by that I mean I'm just
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: too damn old to get involved anymore, right? But I
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: absolutely love this league. I really do. And I want
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: to do anything that I do. I want to promote
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: the league and the players that are playing within it.
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: These are young men. I can't even tell you. The
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: older I get, the more I feel like I'm hanging
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: out with my kids on every road trip. and i
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: i love these guys and i want i want to
- 1:18:52Speaker 5: set a good example for them i want them to
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: do well i want them to maybe take a little
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: piece away from me as to how i carry myself
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: online and elsewhere so i i just i try to
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: think about that I want to promote the league. I
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: really do. Is hockey perfect? Absolutely not. We all know that.
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: But is this a great game at a great level
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: with a great age group of young men? Yes. And
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: I want to be a part of building that up.
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: So I stay right the hell out of the muck.
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: And my track record online for years now has absolutely
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: borne that out. I've got no time for it anymore.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Well, Mike, we've got, I guess, I got like two
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: more just quick rapid fire questions for you, but we've
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: got our friend of the show, Josh Brown, wanted us
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: to ask you, with it being election night municipally tonight,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: when are you going to run for mayor of Kitchener?
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: Have I made it clear on this podcast how much
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: I love Josh Brown? Because anything I said kind about
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: him before this, I take it all back. What a
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: muckety muck this guy is.
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: Here's my e-transfer, Josh.
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: It's funny you bring that up, though, because I was
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: going to give you guys a hard time for taking
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: me away from election results to do this podcast with you.
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: And that's a true story. I am such a geek
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: when it comes to politics. I really am, especially local politics.
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: But your audience doesn't want to hear me complain about
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: missing the municipal election results. So pretend I didn't say that.
- 1:20:23Speaker 5: The answer to Brownie's question is never. And don't ever
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: ask another question from him to me anymore. Please and
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: thank you. What a guy.
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: I was going to ask if he needed the new arena.
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: He's been all over the new arena. What new arena?
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: He wants a new arena in Kitchener. Last year when
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: he was on, he wants a new arena.
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: So he wants me to be the mayor because he
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: thinks that if I'm the mayor, we're going to get
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: this big fancy new arena in Kitchener. He'll run for council.
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay.
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: That's it. Josh Brown will be running mates for Kitchener
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: Council 2030. And our campaign promise will be a brand
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: new arena. Like it'll put the new arena in Brantford
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: to shame, even though we have no money for it,
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: but don't worry about that details. It's just a campaign promise.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Nobody cares. I don't think Kitchener is going to be
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: happy with Josh Brown because it sounds like he wants
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: to be the one to demolish the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. So, um,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: you know, he won't be a popular guy in Kitchener
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: with all the memories in that building, but, uh, Mike,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: with it being Halloween, this is a two-parter. One, what's
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: your favorite Halloween candy? And what's your favorite costume?
- 1:21:24Speaker 5: Favorite Halloween candy. Are they just called bats? Or are
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: they ba-ba-ba-ba-bats? You know the things on a stick? It's
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: like a little toffee thing. They get B-B-B-B bats or
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: something like that. It's orange wrapper on there. It's like
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: some kind of molasses. It's delicious. They're the best things.
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: I heard you guys talk about this last week. I'm
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: just going to throw this in there because I want
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: it on every record I possibly can. rockets should be
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: put into a rocket ship, send them to Elon Musk,
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: and blast them off into outer space. If you give
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: kids on your street rockets for Halloween candy, they should
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: egg your windows. And kids, egg the windows. If somebody
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: gives you those stupid rockets, egg their house. That's the
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: worst candy ever. Worst candy ever. But the best candy,
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: the b-b-b-b-bats. I don't know what they're, I think they're
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: just bats. Whatever. You know the ones I'm talking about.
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: It's on a stick. Yeah, you got them there. There
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: you go.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: That's what we need. 100%. Find those. And my favorite costume.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: Gosh, okay.
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: Listen, this is how it is, guys, when you have
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: me on, okay? You're going to get the straight goods.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: Always.
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: And you've met me in person. If you saw the
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: video that Dylan Baker posted Friday night from The Odd,
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: he and I together on his pregame video, I look
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: like I'm standing in a manhole. So I bring this
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: up because I am not... I am not the tallest
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: human being.
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: I'm not even sure. Like, I don't know if I
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: got stunted somewhere along the way. Cause I, I, I
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: could pass. I really could without the wrinkles for somebody
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: in grade eight, probably. So answer to the question, favorite
- 1:23:01Speaker 5: costume is Spider-Man true story because you know, I'm not,
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: I have a, I have a Spider-Man like full onesie
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: costume that I could like, I, it, Well, it doesn't
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: fit around the waist as well as it used to,
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: but because it's my size, because I'm like a child.
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: I'm the size of a child. I've got the mouth
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: of an adult. And sometimes I curse like a sailor.
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: Big mouth, small body. Spider-Man's the best costume. And I
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: could put on my Spider-Man onesie. I mean, maybe Mrs.
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: Farwell's in the mood for that tonight. I'll go find
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: out when I'm off with you guys. We're watching election results.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: So watch out for a Spider-Man costume running around on Saturday.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: It could be Mike Farwell getting some candy.
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: Only if, and I'm going to bring eggs, because if
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: you hand out those damn rockets, forget it. I am good.
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: I'm so egging your house. I am so egging it.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: For our American listeners, they're known as Smarties down there,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: which is a whole other conversation.
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: No, not the Smarties. Those little cellophane-wrapped things that taste
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: like powder.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Yeah, they're called Smarties in the States.
- 1:23:58Speaker 5: You're serious? I thought you meant like our chocolate Smarties.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: That's why when people ask us about, like, our Smarties
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: are like M & Ms. They're like, what are you
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: talking about? Because their Smarties are... or their rockets are smarties.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: That's what they're called.
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: You are a smart guy. You're much smarter than me.
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: I should shut up. Don't, Hey, Hey, Buffalo, don't give
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: out smarties to the kids. They should egg your house.
- 1:24:16Speaker 5: If you do.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: I like that. Uh, Mike, before we let you go,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: we're going to give you an opportunity here. Obviously new
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: radio station this year. We're so happy to have you back, uh,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: calling Rangers games and everything like that. Uh, we knew
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: it was only a matter of time. We're so happy
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: that everything worked out for you being able to be
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: back with the voice of the Rangers. Where can people find, uh,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: find the broadcast this season and also go ahead and, and, uh,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: you know, uh, I guess, promote what you and Dan
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Meager are doing over at the OHL podcast.
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: I'm glad that you knew everything was going to work out, BC,
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: because let me tell you, the first two weeks of
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: this season were frigging killing me. But I'm so glad
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: that everything did. The stars aligned, and we are now
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: on FM 98.5 in the region of Waterloo. So if
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: you're driving through, it really does sound good on FM,
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: the broadcast. And you can get us anywhere in the
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: world at CKWR.com. So check out a broadcast some night.
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: We're happy to have long distance listeners with us. We
- 1:25:11Speaker 5: always give them a little bit of love. And yes,
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: my buddy Dan and I do a thing once a week,
- 1:25:16Speaker 5: a lot like this thing. We call ours the OHL podcast.
- 1:25:19Speaker 5: It's just another way, just like you guys do. And
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: it's the reason that I love the work that you do.
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: And we'll never call ourselves competitors. We're cooperators is what
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: we really are. It's coopetition. The OHL podcast, Dan and
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: I do, we release it every Tuesday. This week's going
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: to be late. Our buddy who produces it's in the
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: Peruvian jungle somewhere. Don't ask. We might get out on
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: Wednesday this week, but usually it's a Tuesday morning release.
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: And we just want to talk about the things going
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: on in this league. And we do on the OHL podcast.
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: Mike, it's always a pleasure to have you on. Always
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: enjoy our chats at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium and other
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: away rinks. Again, Mike Farwell, the longtime voice of the
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: Kitchener Rangers team. home and away every single game. Mike, again,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: congratulations on everything that happened last season, OHL Championship, Memorial
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: Cup Championship, and being back as the voice of the Rangers.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Colin and I are big fans and supporters of you,
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: and also I think I speak on behalf of a
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: lot of the media colleagues here in the Ontario Hockey League.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: We're happy that you're back in the saddle with the Rangers.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: So I hope to have you on again at some
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: point later in the year, but really appreciate you taking
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: the time tonight away from your municipal election geeking out.
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: BC, I'm only ever a text away. I love what
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: you guys are doing, so thanks for having me here. And, Wardy,
- 1:26:33Speaker 5: next time we're disagreeing, man. Like, this is way too
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: much getting along, okay?
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: In person. In person. In person.
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: Well, hey, we still got to see each other two times.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: We haven't even faced each other, and we should be
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: in the same division. So anytime, and also anytime, we
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: can set up a call. We can call Sweetland.
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: Let's get an interview going with Commissioner Crawford. Let's settle this.
- 1:26:52Speaker 5: All we're asking for, Josh Sweetland, is a camera, And
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: a meeting. That's all Warty and I want. Those two things. Okay.
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: Simple. Let's go.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: I might need to be Brian Crawford security for that episode. Awesome.
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: Thanks so much, Mike. Have a great night. We'll talk soon.
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: Thanks guys. Look forward to the next time.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: There's the one and only Mike Farwell voice of the
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: kitchen arrangers again, Colin, just, you know, great to have
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: him back in the booth. Obviously I missed the first
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: couple of games of the season, but everything worked itself
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: out and, being back with the Rangers and being able to,
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: you know, call the games every single game. And again,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: what he went through last season with OHL Championship Memorial Cup,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: what a run, you know, I'm sure it's just an
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: amazing time there right now. And for him to be
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: back in the booth full time, you know, there wouldn't
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: be anybody else that we'd rather see, obviously, you know,
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Don Cameron, God rest his soul, but Mike Farwell, you know,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: synonymous with the Kitchener Rangers.
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, Mike's a beauty.
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: I honestly I enjoy I look forward to being able
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: to chat with him it's too bad it's only twice
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: a year it's unfortunate but it's always nice when we
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: went on to his show last summer and then tonight
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: obviously him with us like it's always a treat to
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: be able to talk to Mike it's nice to pick
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: his brain the guy's a great role model for anyone
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: that wants to get into the OHL media side broadcasting
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: side the guy's one of one I mean he's great
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: and that's why I had to ask him Brandon about
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: the social media I had to because in a day
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: of age with social media, I had to ask him
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: because the OHL is so all over the map with
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: what's credible and what's not. So I had to ask
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: him that question. And to me, he's a beauty. And
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: it's a treat to listen to him call a game.
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: There's no one more deserving last year to call that one.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: Cup final in the OHL than Mike Farwell.
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: He's more than paid his dues to be able to
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: have that call. And obviously knowing how important that is
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: for broadcasters. So it's really cool for him to be
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: able to be the voice of the champions last year.
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: And that's really cool.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: Maybe we need to manufacture some sort of a friendly
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: rivalry with the OHL podcast. We'll have to wait and
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: see if we can come up with some, some interesting
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: stuff there. Almost like you and Reese had with that
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: show that doesn't exist anymore back in the day.
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: You don't even mention them cause they don't exist anymore.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: So it doesn't even matter now, but you put them
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: out of business. So that's all that matters.
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: Honestly, it's great. Like I enjoy listening to Mike and Dan.
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: I enjoy, and like what, like what Mike says, it's,
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: you know, it's real, it's really neat.
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: The league needs more. The league needs that, you know, like, yep.
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: I say a lot of dumb things. Mike doesn't.
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: So it's always great. It's like, you say a lot
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: of smart things. I say a lot of dumb things.
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: So it's nice to have multiple opinions on the league.
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: The more opinions in this case, I think could be
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: the better.
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: So I think, I think it's very important. And I,
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: and I hope honestly, there's more like.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: I think that the league needs this and that, you know,
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: that the new landscape, there's a lot of angles people
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: can take. So to be able to have a platform
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: and to be able to grow a platform, it's important
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: in this day and age.
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: Absolutely. So let's, let's move on to our next segment here, Colin.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: And again, we went a little bit long on this
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: week's episode, but it is what it is. We had
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: a great guest on and we had a lot of
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: fun stories and the things to chat with Mike Farwell about.
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: So we'll move on to our, trick or treat segment.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: And we've actually got a nice little background there on
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: the video version. And we got a little bit of
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: background Halloween music playing for you guys too. So, uh,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: this segment again, trick or treat. So we're going to
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: just mention, I'm going to rattle off five teams within
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: the Ontario hockey league, uh, from all different parts of
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: the standings. And Colin's going to let me know if
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: they're a trick, which means that he's not buying what they're,
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: what they've got so far this year, or if they're
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: a treat, if he's going to, he's a goodbye and,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: and open that chocolate bar to that, to that team
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: because he thinks that they're going to do a good thing.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: So this is our trick or treat segment, a fun
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: one here on the OHL and 60 podcast. We continue
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: our trend here, Colin first team, Flint Firebirds trick or treat. I,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: I think this team, I mean, they're definitely having a
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: good start and I feel bad.
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: I didn't mention them in the Western conference. When I
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: was talking about London, I mentioned Sue and not Flint.
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: That's impossible to do. I feel like that should be legal.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: I should be fine for that. So I'm going to say,
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: I'm going to say right now. Oh, I wish it
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: could be on the fence, but I can't take the
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: high road here. I can't take the middle. I got
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: to pick a side. I'm going to say trick. I'm
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: going to say trick, but I so badly want to
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: say treat, obviously. So I'm going to say trick.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: My apologies, Flint.
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: I know Flint fans can get a little ruthless online.
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: So I experienced that before. So I'm expecting it.
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: So here we go.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: They're 9-2-1 right now, and they're 7-2-1 in their last
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: 10 games, Colin. We thought last year was the year
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: for Flint, right, when they went all in. They got
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: Kevin Heath, Jacob Bataglia. They look like a wagon with
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Nathan Aspinall as well. We thought that Flint went out
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: a little bit earlier than they should have, really, but
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: they ran into that Windsor team, obviously. But, again, they're
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: off to a good start this year. I think pleasantly
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: surprised with the Flint Firebirds so far.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: And it's great for them. It's great to see the door, right?
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: Meaningful games. How loud it gets in that building, right? Like, yeah,
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: I hope I'm wrong with this, Flint fans. I love
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: Flint when they're in a playoff run. I think that
- 1:32:14Speaker 3: building is one of the most electric buildings in the league.
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: So I hope that that continues to bite me with
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: the tricks. Look at Owen Sound. Look at Owen Sound.
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: They go get a couple wins since their rant last week.
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: You're welcome, Gregory Cowan.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to have Greg Cowan from the Sun-Times
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: on at some point later this year. But we talked
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: a lot about the Owen Sound attack and Colin Erdode's grievances,
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: and they played well. And I've got more on the
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: attack later when we get to our stick taps. But
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: next team, trick or treat, Colin, the Sioux Greyhounds.
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: Trick.
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: If I gave Flynn a trick, I'm giving Sioux a trick.
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: Saginaw is going to win that division, in my opinion.
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: And I know they look at Saginaw right now in
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: the standings, but I believe Saginaw, has a decent team,
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: and I think it all works out by December 1st.
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: This month's huge. November's big.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: So you've got both tricks so far with the Sioux
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: Greyhounds and the Flint Firebirds.
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: I'm the humbug of Halloween.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: You are right now.
- 1:33:13Speaker 5: I can't believe it.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I can't believe it. Next team, we're going to go
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: to the Eastern Conference, Colin, and I'm going to give
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: you the Oshawa Generals trick-or-treat.
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: It's been a treat so far to start the season.
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: So I'll say a treat because where they are right now,
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: I think this is their peak. This could also bite me.
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: This is kind of a bite me or push it
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: under the rug type segment over trick or treat. I
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: think that I think Oshawa similar to Niagara is having
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: their peak start. Obviously two teams don't make the playoffs
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: in the East. I think those two teams are kind
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: of cutting stone. they work hard and they battle, especially Brampton,
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: but I'm going to say it right now.
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: It's a treat.
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: I think Oshawa makes the post season this year. So
- 1:34:03Speaker 4: I think that's a treat for generals fans after last season.
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: It's a treat.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: So it's not a rocket treat.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: I know Jack Moore is going to love that, that you,
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: that you were, you were nice to the Oshawa generals there, even,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: even within the, the East division there with the Bramford Bulldogs.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: So next one, Colin, a team that, Right now, it
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: looks to be a trick, but we had them as
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: a major treat coming into the year. The North Bay Battalion.
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: Didn't they do this last season? Didn't they do this
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: last season? So I'm going to say it's a trick
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: because they're tricking us. In the end of the year,
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: we'll be a treat for the North Bay Battalion.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: Yeah, they're sitting, what, sixth place in the East right now?
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: Not where we expect Ryan Ulhan's club to be. Seventh, yeah.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: Hasn't been a good start for them, obviously. But again,
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: that's a team that we were both high on going
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: into the year as potential, I guess, dark horses behind
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: Sudbury for that central division.
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: And right now the Niagara Ice Dogs are second in
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: the central division. So we got to give them them
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: a little bit of a shout out there. So my
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: last team in the trick or treat, Colin, we're going
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: to go back to the Western Conference and I'm going
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: to pick it out for you. We we wanted them.
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: We've been championing them. Sarnia Sting.
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: Sarnia. Owen sounds going to get back in that eighth spot.
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: And are you guys going to be the team to
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: fall to ninth and out of the playoff spot for
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: the fourth straight season, Brandon?
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: I'm going to say a trick. I am sorry. Sorry.
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: But this team's too good to be a trick. It's
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: too good to be a trick. I want to say treat.
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: I want this team to make the playoffs. I want
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: them to make the playoffs. Then more of a backdoor
- 1:35:45Speaker 4: in team. You know, I want them to clinch and
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: have that last week of the season not mean anything
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: for them, not having to go down to game 68, right?
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: But this team, man, the lows of lows and the
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: highs of highs this year, and there's just been more
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: lows right now. And ever since last year, you know,
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: I mentioned Kitchener and Kitchener took off.
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: This year, it's just not working with Sarnia. And I
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: want it to work out. I want it to work out.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: For this thing, but I don't know, something seems out
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: of sync this last couple weeks here. So hopefully they
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: get back on target here and they can have a
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: big weekend ahead.
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: They turn into a treat, but right now I'm going
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: to say trick.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: So Colin, I'm going to give you last thoughts on it.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: What is your top treat to watch so far this season?
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: Any team you want to give a shout out to?
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: There's a lot of teams right now. You know what?
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: I like what Sudbury did trading for Tanner Adams. There
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: you go. I love that.
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: No, I love it for both sides. I love Brampton saying, hey,
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: you want them? This is what I want.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: They got a whole bag of candy.
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: Like the entire sack.
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: They got all the BBB bats. They got all of them. Mike,
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: go to Brampton. Trick or treating. Go to Brampton. They
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: got it all.
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: But I'm going to say that was my favorite moment
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: so far other than rivalry weekend. I know it's only five,
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: six weeks into the season, Brandon, but I got to
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: say it now. Sudbury saying, no, you know what? We
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: love Tanner Adams. We're going to give you 15 picks.
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: I'm all for it. I'm all for the drama. I'm
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: all for it. And to me, I think it's one
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: of the biggest talking points of the season other than
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: the Memorial cup rant today.
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: But I think that I love that for the league, man.
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: It got attention. Everyone was talking about it. And you
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: know what? This new landscape, this new day and age, I,
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: You know, I love that the Wolves did that, to
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: be honest. I don't, like, I love it for the content.
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: I don't love it for the Wolves' future. For now,
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: I guess. Not really the future, because their future is
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: going to look good with him and Quaggia.
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: But I'm going to say I love that for the OHL,
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: because it gets all eyes on us, and it was
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: a treat to talk about. So I'm going to say
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: that trade has been the biggest treat so far this season.
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: Team-wise to watch, Brandon, I got to say right now,
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: the guelph storms seeing them be a memorial cup host
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: and watching guelph go through this process and have the
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: start and honestly seeing your boys brandon sata robrick playing
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: with this purpose for the first time in their careers
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: having you know not going to train a captain and
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: crap you know like i think that it's so it
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: looks like a breath of fresh air for those guys
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: and i think it you can see it in their
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: play so i'm going to say watching guelph as a
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: mem cup host has been unbelievable watching kitchener defend their
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: memorial cup championship i like their core kitchen i like
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: their top six i like their in general with the
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: blackies of the world you had mcneil's right the defenseman
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: I like Kitchener's roster as.
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: A repeating roster. Usually lose a lot of guys. They
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: bring six to seven guys back that are quality pieces.
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: You have a core there. I, I really like, I
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: really like where the league's going this season, but I'm
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: going to say Guelph a team like Kitchener's approach to, um,
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: as a defending CHL champions, Memorial cup champions.
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: And, um, yeah, those are my, those are my treats.
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: And I love that Sudbury and Brampton made that trade
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: because what would we be, what would we have talked
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: about if that trade didn't happen?
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: So, I love it.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: We got one of the best rants early in the season,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: and that's up on the YouTube channel. Just the Sudbury
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: rant from Colin.
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: That was our own show that week.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: It was an all-timer, but who would have thought? He
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: came around on it, and maybe Ben Leeson, last week's guest,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: the beat reporter of the Sudbury Wolves for the Sudbury Star,
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: maybe changed Colin's views on it a little bit.
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: I don't like the trade for Sudbury, but I love
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: that they did it. I love that they did it.
- 1:39:41Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: Rob Papano took a swing, and he sure as heck
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: hit a home run right now. We'll see. what happens
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: when he's trotting around the bases there without those picks. But, uh,
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: with that, that was our trick or treat segment for
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: the year. Love that. If we could have been eating
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: some candy on the air without, you know, looking like slobs, uh,
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: we probably could have done that too. But, uh, again,
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: for the, for the Halloween, uh, festivities, we had to
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: bring that segment back. It was, uh, it was a
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: great one. And, uh, and I enjoyed that a lot with,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: hope you guys enjoyed the background music too. And, uh,
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: the little, a little layover I got, but, uh, let's
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: move forward here, Colin, before we get to our stick taps,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: let's quickly go over, uh, the players of the week
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: in the Ontario Hockey League. Player of the week comes
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: from the Erie Otters. Michael Deck, what a week this
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: guy had. Three games, six goals, two assists, eight points,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: plus five. Erie was in a three and three as well.
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: They played in Niagara. They played at home on Saturday
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: against Niagara again and then had to go to Brampton
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: on the Sunday. So a quick three and three, but
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: Michael Deck, he sure as heck got enough sleep. Player
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: of the week.
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I think for Michael Deck, this is unbelievable. um,
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: that trade last year, right.
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: We're seeing the benefit of those one for one, Jay.
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: And I think that Michael's deck, um, getting player of
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: the week, three and three, get eight points over that time.
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: Like you mentioned plus five. Um, that's impressive. I mean,
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: they peppered the ice dogs in those games. I mean,
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: they peppered Niagara and, uh, ended up getting a split
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: where the ice dogs are very lucky.
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: I would say in that robbery weekend, but For Michael,
- 1:41:05Speaker 4: I mean, it's great to see players have success in
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: that league.
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: It makes the league better.
- 1:41:09Speaker 4: And he has 22 points in 14 games. You're looking
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: at a trade last year that's really paying dividends now
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: for the Erie Otters side of things.
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. Since coming over from the Owen Sound attack,
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: he's been a great fit there with the Erie Otters
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: and off to a great week or had a great
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: week there and was well deserving of OHL player of
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: the week. Let's go to goaltender of the week. And
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: that comes to us. From the Flint Firebirds, Trenton Bennett,
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: another former Owen Sound attack goaltender. 2-0 this week, 1.44
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: goals against average, a 9.55 save percentage, 64 saves and
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: a shutout. A great week for him in Flint and
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: a team that obviously, as we mentioned, sitting third place
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: right now, 7-2-1 their last 10. Trenton Bennett's been a
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: nice add for them.
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: No, you know, that's why I.
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: Wish I said a treat for the Flint Firebirds because
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: Trenton Bennett getting the opportunity, right, to say, hey, essentially
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: Owen Sound didn't want him.
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: Right? Like he was the first guy out.
- 1:42:03Speaker 4: I think to get that opportunity in Flint to have
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: that draft experience in the way he's played in three
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: games with the Firebirds early sample size, but he's looked
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: great and definitely for goaltender of the week. And you
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: look at the success that they've had in their last
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: 10 Flint goes hand in hand.
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: Yeah. And a guy that was drafted fourth round in
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: 2025 by the New Jersey Devils. See if he signs
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: an NHL entry level contract.
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: You can make the Brooklyn Nets six, eight. They need
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: a lot.
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, he's got the basketball player height for sure.
- 1:42:35Speaker 4: All basketball team in the OHL. We got to come
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: up with that. Karmadov, Bennett.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it'd be wild. But moving on to Rookie of
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: the Week comes from the Sudbury Wolves, Cash Quaggia. Three
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: games played, three goals, one assist, four points plus four.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: He's been one of the, obviously, you know, that bright
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: young core that Sudbury has. He's one of the pieces
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: of that, along with Tanner Adams, Colin Cash Quaggia. you know,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: first round pick in the, in the OHL draft, a
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: lot of hype around this young man as well. And
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: a guy that the Sudbury is obviously happy to have,
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: and he's off to a good start.
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: Man. Silky, silky smooth. I'll touch on him again as
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: a little teaser. I, I mean like 15 points in
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: 13 games in his rookie season, right? Like it's a
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: younger league.
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: And I think back to Ben Leeson, his comment last
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: week on a cash, right? Where he's kind of guy
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: with the puck. He's got the flash to that line
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: where Tanner has more of a straight line.
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: And man, they compliment each other. Good.
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: Watching that game on Sunday, seeing cash in the shootout,
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: that penalty shot move. I mean the little fake, I
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: don't even know every year. These kids are so good
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: every year, every year, a kid comes up and it's like, Oh,
- 1:43:43Speaker 4: here's a new move. Remember in the Michigan was the thing.
- 1:43:45Speaker 4: And now it's not like thing, but it's like, now
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: there's these other, like these little like stutter steps and
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: then like a flick of the wrist and it's on
- 1:43:53Speaker 4: the far bar just underneath the bar and watching cash project, um,
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: Try that move. I mean, man, the shootout yesterday, he
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: beat Humphreys but hit the crossbar. And I watched that move,
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: and I'm thinking, if I did that, I'd fall on
- 1:44:07Speaker 4: my butt. And better yet, if I was in net
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: and that happened, I'd just leave the net and say, here, here,
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: I don't want to look dumb. So here, I'm just
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: going to give you an empty net. I mean, silky smooth.
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: I mean, to watch him play, he's the price of admission.
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: It's a treat to watch him and his hands go
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: to work.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: Absolutely. So let's get to our personal pick. players of
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: the week and again our stick taps of the week
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: are brought to you by butt ends hockey stick grips
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: specifically for the top of the stick designed to replace
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: traditional hockey cloth tape check them out at butt ends
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: with a z.com or use our referral code butt ends.com
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: slash discount slash armchair gm to get 10 off your
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: order as part of our community engineered for greatness and
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: performance butt ends the number one grip in hockey and
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: the qr code is up on the screen for you
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: guys as well if you want to use our discount
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: code there colin uh i'm gonna start i've got my
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: first stick tap of the week is going to Pierce
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: Bowie of the Owen Sound attack after, you know, what
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: was a tumultuous week last season. And we ranted about them,
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: about how they were going to kind of get out
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: of that rut that they were in. And they bounced
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: back with a good performance. And Pierce Bowie was a
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: big part of that. The captain, he dropped the gloves
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: against London, too. He was sticking up for his teammates.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: Three goals, three assists, plus four, 12 shots in three
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: games for the Pittsburgh Penguins third rounder in this past draft.
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: and a commitment to Penn State as well for the
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: future if he doesn't sign his entry-level contract. So I've
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: got to give a shout-out to Pierce Bowie here because
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: I feel like he answered the bell with all the
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: questions we had and the criticisms we had of his
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: own sound attack team last week.
- 1:45:33Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I said if the team keeps it up,
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: he's going to be traded. And, you know, I think
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: for Pierce, he's a phenomenal player in this league.
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: He's a superstar. There's no doubt about it. And I
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: think for him to have a weekend, Brandon, like you mentioned,
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: to bounce back is huge.
- 1:45:49Speaker 6: Huge.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: Absolutely. So Colin, who's your stick tap going to this week?
- 1:45:53Speaker 3: Kaskawaja. Just mentioned him. You know, I think for the
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: maturity level that this kid shows on a day in
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: and day out for Sudbury and he puts them over
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: the hump.
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: He's one of those players that when he's successful, the
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: team's successful. As a young player, the league's a younger league.
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: And when Kaskawaja is successful, he's successful. And I watch
- 1:46:16Speaker 4: the conference he plays with And like I mentioned, there's
- 1:46:19Speaker 4: the opportunity in the shootout there on Sunday night. I
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: think that those are the plays that I want to see.
- 1:46:25Speaker 4: I want to see the confidence in a 16-year-old like that.
- 1:46:28Speaker 4: So to watch him go to work, it's a blast.
- 1:46:31Speaker 4: So I'm going to say Cash Kawaja, my stick tap
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: of the week, just because of his development pace.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: Cash Kawaja, Colin Ward's stick tap of the week. And
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: my second stick tap, and here come the eye rolls
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: from the OHL social team and from all the fans
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: listening or watching. I'm sorry. but I have to give
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: Ryan Robrick a shout out. Two games played, four goals,
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: one power play goal, two shorthanded goals, 18 shots on
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: net in two games. Ryan Robrick has to get a
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: shout out this week for his Patrick performance. And just again,
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: like what a stat line, a power play goal, two
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: shorthanded goals, 18 shots in two games. He's been firing
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: in all cylinders, 18 points in 11 games for my boy,
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: Ryan Robrick in Guelph.
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: You don't have to ask him to shoot the puck.
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: You don't have to ask him to shoot the puck, Brandon.
- 1:47:17Speaker 4: That's what it's all about in Ryan Roebuck. I mean,
- 1:47:20Speaker 4: he was great in the head-to-head with Kitchener. He was
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: great to watch. And like I said earlier, Brandon, it's
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: nice to see those guys, him and Ethan Zada, with
- 1:47:30Speaker 4: their opportunities, right?
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: Like, it's nice to see them, that breath of fresh air.
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: You see that in their play.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: Absolutely. So, yes, Pierce Bowie, Ryan Roebuck, and Kash Khwaja
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: are our stick taps of the week brought to you
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: by Butt Ends. So, Colin, I guess we'll move forward
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: here with the power rankings, and I guess we'll just
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: quickly run through those. Again, this show has gone extensively long,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: but we had a great guest on this week in
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: Mike Farwell, and again, we're going to give a programming
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: alert for next week, a little bit different of a
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: show next week, but I'll touch on that later. Yeah,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: I'll touch on that later, but here are the power
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: rankings in the OHL this week. For you guys listening
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: in audio, just quickly read them off from 16 to
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: 1 and get Colin's quick thoughts on it. Niagara at 16.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: owens sound peterborough north bay erie saginaw or excuse me
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: sarnia then saginaw at 10 9 the sioux greyhounds 8
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: the kitchener rangers 7 the london knights who dropped two
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: spots number 60 ottawa 67s who dropped three spots the
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: branford bulldogs down one to five the sudbury wolves up
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: two to four the kingston front necks and third guelph
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: storm drop from one to two and going from two
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: to one are the flint firebirds colin thoughts.
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: You know i i like it i mean the power
- 1:48:45Speaker 4: rankings are there for talking points they get old they
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: and you know they're never a dull moment i guess
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: there's some fans um flint deserves it they played a
- 1:48:55Speaker 4: good week they had a good weekend guelph kind of
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: i you know what guelph didn't even play that bad
- 1:49:00Speaker 4: it was more kitchener played good So I'm going to
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: cut the crap with that. It was more Kitchener played
- 1:49:06Speaker 4: good for Guelph to drop. It's kind of nonsense. They
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: are the best team in the league. My power rankings,
- 1:49:12Speaker 4: I'd have Guelph one. So, but I'd also have Flint
- 1:49:15Speaker 4: in the top five, probably top three, to be honest.
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: And Guelph still got a point, right?
- 1:49:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: Like, yeah. So we're punishing teams like.
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: For not, for not being perfect. I guess that that's
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: what you get when you're the top ranked team.
- 1:49:29Speaker 4: I'm not just saying that cause the Bulldogs are there
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: next week and I might get an extra slice of
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: pizza in the media room for saying good.
- 1:49:34Speaker 3: Things about Guelph either.
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: Absolutely. So yeah. Oh yeah. Oh, it's a great one.
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: But yeah, so there it is. There's the power rankings
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: this week in the Ontario hockey league, Friday night face
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: off Colin. We're a, we're three in one under your,
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: I guess, advisory board and we got to go back
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: to our one, only the one that we lost. And
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: for some reason, this game, for the second time in
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: four weeks in the exact same game, the exact same arena,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: the Peterborough Peets against the Kingston Frontenacs at Slush Puppy Place. Colin,
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: we got our one loss from the Peets, picking them
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: over the Fronts, who ended up losing that week.
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: I got the tablet. I'm Dale Hunter in you.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: Are we going to the well once again with the Peets?
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: We said they were cooked weeks ago, as much as
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: we love them. You know, did we pick the Fronts here?
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: Do we have to go back to the well and
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: pick the Peets again on the road?
- 1:50:26Speaker 3: Man, so here we go, right? 7-3 in their last
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: 10 of the Kingston Frontenacs, Brandon. The Peterborough Peets. The Peets.
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: 5-5 in their last 10. Power plays. 30%. Penalty minutes, though.
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: 120 for Kitchener.
- 1:50:47Speaker 4: I'm talking power play 30% for the Peets.
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: Power play for Kingston is 26.7%. Peets take 170 penalty
- 1:50:53Speaker 3: minutes on the season they have. Kingston's not going to
- 1:51:01Speaker 3: take penalties. Kingston's not going to take penalties. And look it,
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: I got the tablet. I'm Dale Hunter. And they got
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: the rivalry contest too on the OHL website for those watching.
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: That's cool. I'm taking the front next. You know what, Brandon?
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: We can't get burnt this time. And I know I
- 1:51:19Speaker 4: picked this. And it's going to be like, and look
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: at the regular season record last season online for those
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: watching online. This year, Kingston's 2-0 against Peterborough. Are they
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: going to go to 2-1 or 0-3, right?
- 1:51:31Speaker 3: So this is tough. I'm going to say the front next.
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: I'm scared to say it, though, because you know what's
- 1:51:37Speaker 4: going to happen, Brandon. Going to get a text on
- 1:51:40Speaker 4: Friday night and say, oh, Kingston. And then we're never
- 1:51:43Speaker 4: going to have to see this matchup again, I hope,
- 1:51:45Speaker 4: this season.
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: I think because Adam Novotny is my Red Tilson candidate, Colin,
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: I'm really torn to want to go with the Peets
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: again and go back to the well.
- 1:51:55Speaker 3: I'm just giving suggestions, man.
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: I don't, I don't like this matchup at all. I
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: really like, again, like I know Troy man, he's your
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: coach of the year pick at the beginning of the year.
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: You know what? I mean, you've only steered me wrong
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: once and it was this matchup. So now I'm going
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: the opposite.
- 1:52:11Speaker 3: So take it at the grain of salt, Brandon.
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: Forget it in honor of Jim Gilchrist. We're going with
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: the fronts in honor of the great radio voice of
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: the Kingston front. Next, Mr. Jimmy G. We're going with
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: the fronts after what the Pete's did to us last time.
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: So hopefully Kingston history repeats itself and they get it
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: done and they don't hand us our second loss off
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: this glorious matchup.
- 1:52:34Speaker 3: Hey, if it happens, I'm calling an asterisk.
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: If, if Western Michigan had to take a loss to
- 1:52:40Speaker 4: Michigan and football and week, whatever week that was one
- 1:52:42Speaker 4: or two, then.
- 1:52:43Speaker 3: This is a, that I'm taking an asterisk. If they
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: got an extra second, I get an extra game.
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: Kingston Frontenac against the Peterborough Peets in a rematch of
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: Friday Night Faceoff from three weeks ago. So Colin, that's
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: it for our extended episode here of the OHL in
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: 60 podcast. Again, we just want to give a quick
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: update on next week's show. I will be away at
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: the U-17s in Oakville covering Hockey Canada portion of that event.
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: So Colin is actually going to host next week's show
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: in audio only with Joel Vanderlaan, who does a great
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: job on a written portion of our content as well,
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: but he's also filled in on a couple of episodes.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: He's going to be Colin's co-host next week. Again, that
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: episode will be out on Tuesday in audio only. So again,
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: we'll be back on the Monday, November the ninth for
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: our next video episode, but Colin will be recording an
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: OHL and 60 podcast in audio only next week. Uh, Colin,
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: that'll be an interesting one, uh, with, uh, you have
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Joel Vanderlaan, uh, in the co-host chair, but you stepping
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: into the host chair, you do it already in the
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: dog cast. So I know you do a great job.
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it should be fun. Um, We'll see. We'll see.
- 1:53:50Speaker 4: It's going to be interesting who's going to control each
- 1:53:52Speaker 4: other's rants. Joel being the smart one, me being the
- 1:53:56Speaker 4: dumb one.
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: So it'll be fun. I can't wait.
- 1:54:00Speaker 4: I cannot wait to have a conversation with Joel. I
- 1:54:02Speaker 4: don't think it's going to be this long. It's not
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: going to be two hours long. I can tell you
- 1:54:05Speaker 4: that much, but we'll have fun. And it'll definitely be informative.
- 1:54:08Speaker 4: And yeah, we'll have some great discussions. And Brandon, we'll
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: miss you. And I know that you 17s don't care.
- 1:54:14Speaker 4: Work harder there. And that'll be a blast.
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and then the week we get back, we're going
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: to have another interesting guest. Christian Simmons, GOHL, does a
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: great job covering the GOHL. He's going to give us
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: a prospect update, obviously, with the GOHL being an affiliate
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: league of the Ontario Hockey League. He's going to give
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: us– we're going to do our Scouting with Simmons segment.
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: He's going to give us some players that have OHL
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: affiliation to their name and a little bit of update there.
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: We're going to bring you on a bi-monthly basis here
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: on the show.
- 1:54:46Speaker 3: Absolutely. Listen to his call on Sunday night.
- 1:54:49Speaker 4: Um doing some bulldog work with the uh the titans
- 1:54:52Speaker 4: there and they were in uh well and i heard
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: his call on uh on flow so that was cool
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: i got to see uh cement so i forgot just
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: got the call up on monday today with the bulldogs
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: john canyo has played some games so it's cool to
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: see uh him call the game it's always nice there
- 1:55:07Speaker 4: with uh checking in on some bulldogs and the geo
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: and you see uh someone you know on the voice
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: so that was cool to see uh to hear christian's.
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: Call Yeah, it works with 519 sports. They do a
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: great job covering the GOHL. So again, when our next
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: video podcast, we'll be having Christian Simmons giving us a
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: GOHL update as the affiliate league of the Ontario Hockey
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: League with some great prospects playing down there. So Colin,
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: final thoughts. Again, Halloween this weekend. It's going to be
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: a lot of fun. We got a lot of great
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: OHL hockey. We got a couple of school day games
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: this week. Forgot to mention that. We got two on
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: the same day. The Steelheads are up in Ottawa for
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: a 10.30 start on Wednesday, as well as the Sarnia
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: Sting are in Owen Sound. So a couple of school
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: day games and Halloween later in the week. So it
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: should be fun.
- 1:55:52Speaker 4: Oh, I can't wait to see Greg Cowan's articles on
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: the school.
- 1:55:56Speaker 3: Day game at the Bayshore. That's going to be a blast.
- 1:55:58Speaker 3: What a treat to follow him on social media. I
- 1:56:01Speaker 3: love his stuff. He's a beauty. I'm a fan boy
- 1:56:05Speaker 3: of his work for sure.
- 1:56:07Speaker 4: And I think that, you know, school day games, you
- 1:56:09Speaker 4: know how I feel about those in the second half
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: of the season. I'm not a fan, but I think
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: that it's cool to get the kids out. Ottawa's school
- 1:56:17Speaker 4: day game is always a special one to see. It's
- 1:56:18Speaker 4: always a treat when you see the NHL ranked packed.
- 1:56:22Speaker 4: That's really cool. So, yeah, no, it'll be fun. And, yeah,
- 1:56:26Speaker 4: we'll see what happens. And I expect this week in
- 1:56:28Speaker 4: the OHL to be like a full-size chocolate bar on Halloween.
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: I expect it to be good. Yeah.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: And, uh, the building's full, which is obviously a big
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: talking point right now, which will get good, uh, with again,
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: just a higher pitch and bring your earplugs for going
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: to those games with those, uh, those screaming kids in attendance.
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: And yes, those big chocolate bars or one of those
