- 0:44Speaker 2: the trope at Saint Vincent College for training camp practice
- 0:49Speaker 2: day number three point, as you would say in French
- 0:54Speaker 2: lan de troiss. Because we have not talked about the
- 0:57Speaker 2: game in France. No, we have no, that's right, bag
- 1:02Speaker 2: gets and and Beignet's and berets. Baby, I can't wait,
- 1:05Speaker 2: minus the minus the berets. It's gonna be great. No,
- 1:09Speaker 2: I'm wearing I'm wearing a Are you gonna wear a beret?
- 1:11Speaker 2: Why not? I'm in France?
- 1:12Speaker 3: When else is it actually justifiable for you to wear
- 1:15Speaker 3: a beret and socially acceptable.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Max, I only in it will be with great pleasure
- 1:22Speaker 2: that I take a picture of yellow. I'm gonna yellow,
- 1:25Speaker 2: send it to everybody and put it out as well.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Everybody's social. Yeah yeah, First of all, I have to
- 1:31Speaker 2: be on social to have any kind of impact. Yeah,
- 1:34Speaker 2: so I guess that's kind of I guess that's kind
- 1:36Speaker 2: of out. By the way, Uh, since we're speaking of
- 1:39Speaker 2: foreign affairs here, I was in Uh. I was in
- 1:44Speaker 2: Rome with my wife in March and made my first
- 1:48Speaker 2: journey to the Steelers bar. Oh you did, I did?
- 1:51Speaker 2: You did?
- 1:52Speaker 4: How?
- 1:52Speaker 2: How was that? It was great? It was It was fantastic.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I gotta I gots or anything. No, I got a
- 1:58Speaker 2: T shirt and I ran into some folks. I ran
- 2:02Speaker 2: into this this group where there I think it was
- 2:04Speaker 2: their granddad had played like ten games in a season
- 2:08Speaker 2: for the Steelers back in the late forties or fifties,
- 2:11Speaker 2: I think it was. But it was cool. There's a
- 2:13Speaker 2: lot of Steelers people there, and and you know, there
- 2:18Speaker 2: was a there was a soccer game on then, because
- 2:19Speaker 2: there's obviously no football. That is their football, that is
- 2:22Speaker 2: their football. But it was It was really kind of
- 2:27Speaker 2: a cool experience to know that lots of people go there,
- 2:30Speaker 2: lots of people hang out, and it was it was neat.
- 2:34Speaker 2: It was kind of neat. Giovanni is the guy that
- 2:37Speaker 2: owns it, and fun to chat with him for a
- 2:40Speaker 2: little bit and you know, kind of hear his story
- 2:42Speaker 2: and I don't know, have you ever been there.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I've been to Rome. I've never been to the Steelers
- 2:46Speaker 3: Bar in Rome, but yeah, I've definitely I've walked the
- 2:48Speaker 3: Spanish stairs, you know what, Tivoli fountain or.
- 2:52Speaker 2: A Trevy Trevy, Travy Trevy fountain, Trevy Fountain. I went
- 2:56Speaker 2: to the spot where you know where Julius Caesar was supposedly,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, mutiny assassin and assassinated by by Brutus at
- 3:03Speaker 2: two brute yep, and went to a bunch of like
- 3:05Speaker 2: the what the what's the what's the theater there in
- 3:09Speaker 2: the middle of it, it's like the big Oh yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 2: the Circus Maximus. Yeah, Circus Maximus done the coliseum, done
- 3:15Speaker 2: all that stuff. So yeah, no, we we And you
- 3:18Speaker 2: know how I did it with Willy Cologne, did you?
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah, Willie, Willie and and our wives, we all we
- 3:24Speaker 3: all did a did.
- 3:25Speaker 2: A trip to Rome, and then we did a Mediterranean cruise. Nice.
- 3:28Speaker 2: So yeah, so no, Yeah, we spent a lot of
- 3:30Speaker 2: time in Rome and we walked to say and my
- 3:32Speaker 2: wife was mad by the end of it. Oh, because
- 3:34Speaker 2: it's a lot of walking. It was like thirty eight
- 3:36Speaker 2: thousand steps. Yeah, it was. It was insane.
- 3:39Speaker 3: The same because because you you're gonna history is literally
- 3:42Speaker 3: every ten feet every.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, ancient footprints are everywhere.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Built on top on top on top on top of
- 3:49Speaker 3: each other, so you have catacombs and trub layers.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I mean, it's just yeah, everywhere. And I'm a huge
- 3:54Speaker 2: history nerd, as we both know. We both share that affinity.
- 3:57Speaker 3: So it's like I'm sitting there giving like the tour
- 3:59Speaker 3: and my wife like, just shut up and take pictures.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I tell you, And and we will get back
- 4:07Speaker 2: to France because I'm sure there's gotta be some Steelers
- 4:10Speaker 2: bars in Paris, absolutely, and we're gonna have to check
- 4:13Speaker 2: those out. We will find it, we'll do research. The
- 4:15Speaker 2: coliseum was one of the most It was one of
- 4:17Speaker 2: the one of those moments where you're you're looking around
- 4:21Speaker 2: to make sure you're you're still standing there, Am I
- 4:24Speaker 2: really here? I'm really in the colisseum am I really
- 4:26Speaker 2: standing here and taking in this beautiful stadium. I don't
- 4:31Speaker 2: think it's big, and I don't think it'd be big
- 4:32Speaker 2: enough to have a football field. It was big, I
- 4:35Speaker 2: don't think it would be that. I'm gonna say, maybe
- 4:39Speaker 2: eighty yards long something like. I don't know. Maybe maybe
- 4:41Speaker 2: it was bigger. But it was an overwhelmingly emotional experience.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And the shape of it is just not conducive to
- 4:47Speaker 2: the rectangle, right, because it's a big oval. So but
- 4:50Speaker 2: you think, I think the space is there, it's just
- 4:51Speaker 2: you wouldn't have sidelines, right. You could probably get the
- 4:54Speaker 2: field in there, and that'd be just about it. Yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and you wouldn't have much outside of the end zones. Well,
- 4:58Speaker 2: it was a pretty a barbaric place, really, you know.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I mean if you know, like probably as kids you
- 5:09Speaker 2: would you would ask a question, and maybe even adults,
- 5:11Speaker 2: you know, hey, who'd win between a Bengal tiger and
- 5:14Speaker 2: a lion? Who'd win a fight? Well? The Romans You're like, well,
- 5:17Speaker 2: let's find out. I mean, it's like, hey, we could
- 5:19Speaker 2: go get really man, you know, the Roman Empire extends
- 5:21Speaker 2: that far right, right, Yeah, I mean you know. Anyway,
- 5:25Speaker 2: so we're looking forward to to Paris. It's it's going
- 5:28Speaker 2: to be groundbreaking. So it was groundbreaking at Croke Park.
- 5:31Speaker 2: They put on a just an incredible event. I mean,
- 5:35Speaker 2: if you're on the fence about going, and if it's
- 5:38Speaker 2: anything at all like yes, if it's anything at all
- 5:41Speaker 2: like like Dublin. It was an incredible experience.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And even though we're going to be the away team,
- 5:47Speaker 3: I don't think that's going to take away from because
- 5:48Speaker 3: I think, well, honestly, we'll probably overpower the Saints fans.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think there will. My guess would be,
- 5:56Speaker 2: you know, as the host team, you're the one that's
- 5:58Speaker 2: putting on all the rallies and doing all all that stuff.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I would guess it's going to be more like you know,
- 6:04Speaker 2: when the students go to Vegas, Man, there are a
- 6:06Speaker 2: ton of Steelers fans, right, yes, I mean either it's
- 6:09Speaker 2: like a takeover out there and then there's Steelers bars
- 6:12Speaker 2: and there there's that kind of thing. I guess it
- 6:14Speaker 2: would be more like that than if the Steelers were
- 6:17Speaker 2: the the host, which just means you know, get there
- 6:19Speaker 2: several days early and like you were, you were going
- 6:23Speaker 2: a week early.
- 6:23Speaker 4: And you were going entire tour.
- 6:25Speaker 2: The you toured the entire country. I'm guessing that if
- 6:30Speaker 2: if the Steelers are the home team, you'd probably be
- 6:32Speaker 2: doing something like that. Again, I think as us as
- 6:35Speaker 2: a weight team, I'm still probably going to be doing
- 6:37Speaker 2: stuff like that. I just don't think it'll be to
- 6:39Speaker 2: the same degree. I'm sorry I missed that pronoun, But
- 6:43Speaker 2: what was that. Did you say, I'm going to go
- 6:46Speaker 2: do some of those things? Yea, we we it's French.
- 6:50Speaker 2: We we. It's French, we we, It's French. You know what, Maxell? Well,
- 6:55Speaker 2: I mean we were a well. I just I'd hate
- 7:00Speaker 2: to have you carry the burden of a week in
- 7:02Speaker 2: in France alone, you know, I would just hate that.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Thank you for your sacrifice in advance. I I just
- 7:08Speaker 2: if you're talking to the powers that be you didn't
- 7:10Speaker 2: want to go on a van with me for a
- 7:12Speaker 2: week around the country, I would have been I would
- 7:16Speaker 2: have probably had the show had to carry the show,
- 7:19Speaker 2: probably would have been some golf clubs in there for
- 7:21Speaker 2: me somewhere going around the country. But anyway, it's gonna
- 7:24Speaker 2: be it's gonna be another cool, it's gonna be awesome.
- 7:27Speaker 2: It's gonna be awesome.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I mean the Eiffel Just think about the backdrop of
- 7:30Speaker 3: the Eiffel Tower, right, I mean you have that, you
- 7:32Speaker 3: have no tre Dame, which is finally you know, back
- 7:34Speaker 3: in order they did end this job there and just
- 7:38Speaker 3: all of the history sham Sally's Arcta Triomph, like the Louver,
- 7:42Speaker 3: like all of these gigantic the obelisks you know that
- 7:46Speaker 3: they brought, you know, I mean, it's gonna be just
- 7:49Speaker 3: an amazing and like I said, us as history nerds,
- 7:52Speaker 3: and I think we can say that affections absolutely. It's
- 7:56Speaker 3: it's an overwhelming Since I've been to Paris, I've been
- 7:58Speaker 3: to Paris three times?
- 7:59Speaker 2: How many times you've been to twice? Twice? My honeymoon
- 8:01Speaker 2: and then I went with my mother. Okay, there we
- 8:04Speaker 2: go my mom over there. Yeah. Nice.
- 8:05Speaker 3: So it's just there's never enough time, no matter how
- 8:09Speaker 3: many times you go, Like I know, there's still things
- 8:12Speaker 3: that I missed.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And you try and hit every museum and every every garden,
- 8:16Speaker 2: every park. There's something there.
- 8:19Speaker 3: There's a building that's been around for three hundred years
- 8:21Speaker 3: that you didn't know about, you know.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And then if you take the train out you can
- 8:25Speaker 2: go out and see what what's the what's the something versa.
- 8:31Speaker 2: You can go see the palace at Versa. I did
- 8:33Speaker 2: a segue to her through versus awesome, you know the
- 8:37Speaker 2: thing the thing over there too and uh, just for
- 8:39Speaker 2: if there are any fellow history lovers too. So when
- 8:43Speaker 2: I was there with my mom, I didn't know it
- 8:44Speaker 2: at the time, but my mom was very close to
- 8:47Speaker 2: having a heart attack, like she she had blockages and
- 8:50Speaker 2: she's a very robust woman, you know, like a lot
- 8:53Speaker 2: of energy level, and she was just like, I gotta
- 8:56Speaker 2: I gotta sit down. I'm like, okay. So so she
- 8:59Speaker 2: was sitting down and we were in this so I
- 9:02Speaker 2: she wanted to go to the Mrae district where they
- 9:04Speaker 2: have the shopping and all that other stuff, and I'm like,
- 9:06Speaker 2: of course, I'll take you over there. Then I got
- 9:08Speaker 2: lost instantly because I thought I knew where I was going,
- 9:10Speaker 2: typical guy, and I wind up in the wrong ronde,
- 9:13Speaker 2: s Mom. So we just I'm like, all right, well,
- 9:15Speaker 2: here's a here's the cathedral, let's go in. So all
- 9:17Speaker 2: these cathedrals over there, oh my god, they're just they're spectacular.
- 9:22Speaker 2: On top of momart, yeah, I mean, and they're all.
- 9:25Speaker 2: You know, a lot of them have uh you know,
- 9:28Speaker 2: they've all got tremendous woodwork and stay marble and stained glass,
- 9:33Speaker 2: and a lot of them have have you know, a
- 9:38Speaker 2: lot of them have minor painters. And of course I
- 9:40Speaker 2: couldn't I'm not a painting and fishing out. I can't
- 9:42Speaker 2: tell a minor painter from a major painter. Anyway, I'm
- 9:45Speaker 2: in this I'm in this cathedral. Uh, and a lot
- 9:47Speaker 2: of them have major paintings. I'm in this cathedral and
- 9:51Speaker 2: you know about So she's nodding off, and I'm like, okay,
- 9:54Speaker 2: I'll read the pamphlet. Well, i don't even know what church,
- 9:56Speaker 2: and I'm going to start reading it, and like fourteenth
- 9:59Speaker 2: on the list was there's a Rubens in here, And
- 10:01Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, so just and it's just nailed to
- 10:04Speaker 2: the wall, and I'm like, it's probably worth millions of dollars,
- 10:09Speaker 2: millions of dollars and it's just on the wall. And it's,
- 10:12Speaker 2: by the way, like the fourteenth most important and impressive
- 10:16Speaker 2: thing in this church. I'm like, that's yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I'm about to say this is millions of dollars upon
- 10:20Speaker 3: the other millions of.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Dollars exactly anyway, go and spend some time gets for
- 10:28Speaker 2: the game, and make sure you order onion soup, not
- 10:31Speaker 2: French onions. Okay, let's not be fully American when we
- 10:34Speaker 2: get over there, yea poem freaks, enjoy the mayonnaise as good.
- 10:39Speaker 2: And and this is this is do as I say,
- 10:42Speaker 2: not as I do, because I'm a ram Ram Ram
- 10:45Speaker 2: ram Ram when I'm on vacation. But just sit at
- 10:49Speaker 2: outdoor a cafe and there's plenty of beverage and just
- 10:51Speaker 2: hang out, you know, and just people watch. I remember
- 10:54Speaker 2: going Lefey Ruby on me. Yeah. I remember going with
- 10:57Speaker 2: my wife when we're on our honeymoon, and we ate
- 11:00Speaker 2: it this little outdoor cafe because I wanted to eat
- 11:02Speaker 2: a little outdoor cafe. And so we did that and
- 11:05Speaker 2: we got there and you know, we're like, okay, let's
- 11:07Speaker 2: get the food here. It's good. And when we sat there,
- 11:09Speaker 2: there were these two guys, older guys, and they had
- 11:13Speaker 2: like pints of beer in front of them, and there
- 11:16Speaker 2: was like a little gone from each one and they
- 11:19Speaker 2: were gabbing, and I don't even think there were more food.
- 11:21Speaker 2: We got there, we ordered our lunch, we did our thing,
- 11:24Speaker 2: we got up to leave and they'd maybe drunk like
- 11:27Speaker 2: another not even a quarter of their beer and they
- 11:31Speaker 2: were still talking. Why because they were just taking their time.
- 11:35Speaker 2: So just go over there and take your time. But
- 11:38Speaker 2: of course that's due as I say, not as I do.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I'm not gonna take your time. We're not gonna do.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I want to see it all.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I need to see it all, every single visit. And
- 11:45Speaker 3: I don't care how many times I've been to Van Go.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I want to go see van Go again, right, I
- 11:49Speaker 3: don't care how many times I've been to the Louver
- 11:51Speaker 3: and I've been to the Egyptian section. I'm going again,
- 11:54Speaker 3: going to look at the same mummy I've seen three
- 11:55Speaker 3: times already for a fourth time, because maybe there's something
- 11:58Speaker 3: there that I don't But I will say that Angelina's
- 12:01Speaker 3: the best hot chocolate in the world, really, and it's
- 12:04Speaker 3: right there in Paris, is right by the La Maarice,
- 12:06Speaker 3: which is like the only like six diamond hotel like
- 12:09Speaker 3: in all of Europe.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, they wouldn't let me anywhere near there. Yeah, no,
- 12:11Speaker 2: you want to walk past, Okay, I see have guards.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Okay, but Angelina's Angelina's okay hot chocolate.
- 12:18Speaker 2: It is magical. Well, when we get into this season
- 12:21Speaker 2: and we start taking phone calls and then we can
- 12:23Speaker 2: dispense what information we have all and could add to that.
- 12:28Speaker 2: My biggest travel tip would be see what you can see,
- 12:31Speaker 2: but do please take an hour or two and just
- 12:35Speaker 2: do nothing. Yeah, just sit to just sit still. Set
- 12:38Speaker 2: the American. Set the American because we're a go go
- 12:41Speaker 2: go country. Set and I didn't do this very well.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Set the American to the side, and just relax because
- 12:47Speaker 2: that's what they like doing over there. I mean, but
- 12:50Speaker 2: go up to Momar and sit there like there's a
- 12:52Speaker 2: big square with all the painters. Yeah, like, just go
- 12:54Speaker 2: sit there and get a painting done, like they'll they'll
- 12:56Speaker 2: do a caricature of you, like like at the boardwalk.
- 12:58Speaker 2: But it's fun, phenomenal. And then there's all these little
- 13:01Speaker 2: restaurants around us. Has to have a table right outside.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Where you can just seep and just sit. It is
- 13:08Speaker 3: one of the most overrated things that we don't do. Yes, right,
- 13:12Speaker 3: But at the same time, in that environment, it's breathtaking
- 13:16Speaker 3: because it is picturesque.
- 13:18Speaker 2: There is history all around you. If you just sit still,
- 13:21Speaker 2: you can see it.
- 13:22Speaker 3: You know, you can go to the Mulan roofs that's
- 13:24Speaker 3: a nighttime activity, right.
- 13:25Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 13:26Speaker 3: You can go and tour the Louver, but sit outside
- 13:29Speaker 3: the gardens like there's all these parks, all of this
- 13:33Speaker 3: amazing infrastrut or just.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Go sit sit below the Eiffel Tower. Yep, grab you
- 13:37Speaker 2: a bag, yet, grab you a little sandwich. You know,
- 13:40Speaker 2: you can get a panini, right and just sit there
- 13:43Speaker 2: with your glass bottle coke and chill. Yes, I do
- 13:46Speaker 2: like the pacing of meals over there. It's one of
- 13:49Speaker 2: the things that I've enjoyed in my you know, like
- 13:52Speaker 2: my wife and I got my Hunt pilot has one
- 13:54Speaker 2: hundred and forty eight thousand miles on it. Yeah, and
- 13:57Speaker 2: I'm not buying a new one as long as I
- 13:59Speaker 2: possible we can, because I'd rather take that money and
- 14:01Speaker 2: go travel. That's what That's what. That's what we do
- 14:03Speaker 2: with our money that we we love to travel. And
- 14:07Speaker 2: but you know, I think about like what what you know,
- 14:09Speaker 2: what the places that I've been fortunate to go to,
- 14:12Speaker 2: Like what do I like about the cultures. I will
- 14:14Speaker 2: tell you this, nobody, nobody does coffee better than America.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I don't want a little rinky dink tiny cup of
- 14:26Speaker 2: espresso or coffee. I want a mug, please, you want
- 14:30Speaker 2: to coffee. I've been places and they bring out a
- 14:34Speaker 2: little tiny caraffe and I and I have to tell them,
- 14:37Speaker 2: you know, and luckily, luckily they haven't gotten mad at me.
- 14:39Speaker 2: But I'm like, I'm an American. I'm gonna need a
- 14:41Speaker 2: lot more coffee than that. Please. Uh so say one
- 14:44Speaker 2: place that will rival that. Okay, Cuban coffee. Well, but
- 14:47Speaker 2: the little tiny one, no, no, that that you're you're
- 14:49Speaker 2: talking about, like the cortados and they dump the sugar in.
- 14:52Speaker 2: There's just a little bit of creepy. But Cuban coffee.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I'm not talking about quality.
- 14:58Speaker 3: I'm talking about si it's on a mug of coffee
- 15:01Speaker 3: jet fuel and they give you and they give you.
- 15:04Speaker 3: I wouldn't say a full mug is probably two thirds
- 15:07Speaker 3: of the mug size, which is more than like an
- 15:09Speaker 3: espresso or whatever George Clooney pushes for coffee that looks
- 15:14Speaker 3: European and fancy, but still for the value, like you're
- 15:17Speaker 3: getting the same amount of that full mug, You're you're
- 15:21Speaker 3: getting about a mug and a half's worth of.
- 15:24Speaker 2: A higher power. I don't mind getting the shakes after
- 15:26Speaker 2: a couple of coffee, all right, with that, it will
- 15:28Speaker 2: give you the ship. I'll get me going. Yeah. But
- 15:30Speaker 2: we're just we're just so. That's the one thing I
- 15:33Speaker 2: would say is that they their meals, whether it's to
- 15:37Speaker 2: the cafe or a restaurant, they're slower. Embrace it, enjoy it.
- 15:42Speaker 2: They're talking tables, they're not trying to turn the tables
- 15:45Speaker 2: because they get paid a living wage. Over there, they do.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I literally sat we had three bottles of wine. It
- 15:50Speaker 2: was four of us, three boles of wine.
- 15:52Speaker 3: We sat there for six hours wow, zero rush Yeah,
- 15:55Speaker 3: Like I felt like the waitress left at one point,
- 15:58Speaker 3: like and she spoke the whole pack of cigarettes outside,
- 16:00Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, Like, and she did not
- 16:02Speaker 3: check on us once.
- 16:03Speaker 2: She's like yeah, whatever whatever, you know, Yeah, And she
- 16:06Speaker 2: was like lase fair was truly a true phrasing over there.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And a lot of the places aren't as expensive as
- 16:13Speaker 2: you would think. They're not as expensive. Now Paris will
- 16:15Speaker 2: be expensive if you're going to Paris, A lot of
- 16:17Speaker 2: the places aren't expen It does occur to me like
- 16:19Speaker 2: how are these people? How are the restaurant owners making
- 16:22Speaker 2: me a living? How is this? How are they paying
- 16:25Speaker 2: these waiters and waitresses? The food is fantastic, it's delicious
- 16:29Speaker 2: and it's not that expensive. How is this working? Zerolation
- 16:33Speaker 2: and works. Yeah, I guess that's probably true. That's the
- 16:38Speaker 2: local the local butcher.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Once you own land, they don't pay taxes on land
- 16:42Speaker 3: after after you've bought it. Once it's yours for life.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Really yeah, so, I mean, so it's like a lot
- 16:47Speaker 2: of things that are uniquely inherent here in the US,
- 16:50Speaker 2: Like they don't pay property taxes, they don't pay health insurance,
- 16:53Speaker 2: so you can pay living wages off of that.
- 16:56Speaker 3: And then also interesting, whatever you're raising on your you're
- 16:59Speaker 3: making pure profit all off of hogs that you sell,
- 17:01Speaker 3: you know, if you're selling cattle, if you're selling produce, right,
- 17:05Speaker 3: you're buying directly from the a lot of these farms.
- 17:08Speaker 2: So one of us knows a lot more about economics
- 17:11Speaker 2: than the other here in the Urban and Regional Planning
- 17:13Speaker 2: of Sociology degree at work. Baby. So anyway, we we
- 17:18Speaker 2: just got we just got Uh did we talk about football? No,
- 17:22Speaker 2: we're got, Yes, we talked about football. We started with it.
- 17:25Speaker 2: We started with uh, playing about going to Europe, and
- 17:28Speaker 2: then my mentioning that I've been to the to the
- 17:31Speaker 2: to the bar, the Steelers Bar in Rome, which is
- 17:35Speaker 2: very very cool. And then we started talking about Paris,
- 17:38Speaker 2: but then we got off because we're history guber nerds.
- 17:41Speaker 2: We are, and we and we love travel.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Both of them are travel nerds too, so we love
- 17:45Speaker 3: seeing the entire world and we've both been a lot
- 17:47Speaker 3: of places.
- 17:48Speaker 2: So we will dispense more information as we get closer
- 17:51Speaker 2: to France. But I would say, you know, go if
- 17:56Speaker 2: you have the opportunity. If it's going to be anything
- 17:58Speaker 2: like Dublin. Yes, they speak a different language, be respectful
- 18:02Speaker 2: of that, and you'll find just try. You will find
- 18:05Speaker 2: that the people are a lot nicer than they're purported
- 18:08Speaker 2: to be. If you give it the old college try
- 18:11Speaker 2: bone sure goes a long way. Absolutely, now c goes
- 18:15Speaker 2: a long way. Yes, totally, that's exactly right. So I
- 18:19Speaker 2: to whords. I know.
- 18:19Speaker 3: My wife took French, I took Spanish, so I'm like
- 18:22Speaker 3: out of my depth and I tried, and they just
- 18:24Speaker 3: appreciated the try that they will stop you and then
- 18:26Speaker 3: they will speak English because they all speak English, but
- 18:28Speaker 3: they would like you to try first.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Yeah, right, exactly. Don't assume so this Travel Advice brought
- 18:34Speaker 2: to you free by Max Starks and Rob King, the
- 18:37Speaker 2: the in the Locker Room Travel Duo. Yes, we're going
- 18:41Speaker 2: to talk more about football, but we're looking forward to that.
- 18:43Speaker 2: So what we've been doing the first three days are
- 18:46Speaker 2: in the locker room and you know, we're in that
- 18:47Speaker 2: acclamation period, so there's not a ton going on in
- 18:50Speaker 2: the on the field, but they are ramping up and
- 18:54Speaker 2: so we're sort of getting you caught up and getting
- 18:56Speaker 2: ourselves back caught up on what went on in the
- 18:59Speaker 2: off season. So we've talked talked about Mike Tomlin retiring,
- 19:01Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy coming in, Aaron Rodgers coming back, the contract extensions,
- 19:06Speaker 2: the guys in the pup list. But that this event
- 19:09Speaker 2: in France, it's a big it's a big off season announcement.
- 19:14Speaker 2: It's a big deal, man, it's going to be really
- 19:16Speaker 2: really cool.
- 19:16Speaker 3: And back to back years, yes, because remember the last
- 19:19Speaker 3: time they went was what twenty and like fourteen or
- 19:22Speaker 3: something like that. It's been a while, twenty thirteen, maybe
- 19:25Speaker 3: it's been a minute. And to go back to back years,
- 19:27Speaker 3: and you're also opening new markets.
- 19:30Speaker 2: It's not like we're going to.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Mexico City where we've gone where the NFL goes for
- 19:34Speaker 3: years on years. So we're going to Germany, where the
- 19:36Speaker 3: NFL has already kind of planted this flag. Like we're
- 19:38Speaker 3: taking the flag there and planting it for the NFL. Right,
- 19:43Speaker 3: we planted it in Ireland, we planned it. Now we're
- 19:45Speaker 3: going to plan it in France.
- 19:46Speaker 2: There's a different atmosphere in fanetic country because it hasn't
- 19:49Speaker 2: been done before, which is a really cool aspect of it. Well,
- 19:52Speaker 2: the ambassador and the you know, the flag football that
- 19:54Speaker 2: he had, he that he started in the backyard of
- 19:57Speaker 2: the Ambassador's residence in beautiful Locks, Dublin. Yeah, I mean, hey,
- 20:01Speaker 2: we got a great launch and this is it's so
- 20:04Speaker 2: like a football field. Let's put a field in there. Man,
- 20:07Speaker 2: come on, come on, Dublin, Come on, Ireland, let's get
- 20:10Speaker 2: let's get up to speed. By the way, I think
- 20:12Speaker 2: you might, I know, but I don't have any insight.
- 20:14Speaker 2: But my guess is that you're gonna be able to
- 20:16Speaker 2: put that Spanish to good use at some point on
- 20:18Speaker 2: a on a Steeler trip. Oh, I think so that'd
- 20:22Speaker 2: be a guess on my part. I mean, you know,
- 20:24Speaker 2: I think there aren't they working on a stadium down there.
- 20:27Speaker 2: They finished it because they finished because it was for
- 20:28Speaker 2: a World Cup. So the stadium's done now. But the
- 20:31Speaker 2: Cardinals are going down to play this year. Okay.
- 20:34Speaker 3: And because we went to France, I think we would
- 20:36Speaker 3: have been in Mexico City had we not gotten the
- 20:38Speaker 3: France card So I think next year would be our
- 20:40Speaker 3: Mexico City trip.
- 20:41Speaker 2: We don't know that, but we're just guessing. So you
- 20:43Speaker 2: have an extra home game. Just saying the quarterback position
- 20:48Speaker 2: is going to be a huge topic of conversation. You're
- 20:51Speaker 2: gonna hear from Will Howard. We're gonna tell you what
- 20:53Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy said about the quarterback position as well as
- 20:56Speaker 2: we dive a little less travel and a little more
- 20:59Speaker 2: football when we continue here in the locker room on
- 21:02Speaker 2: the Steer's Audio Network.
- 21:04Speaker 1: This is live coverage of twenty twenty six Steelers Training
- 21:09Speaker 1: Camp or the Steelers Audio Network, presented by bud Light,

- 21:43Speaker 1: Is Hospitality.
- 21:51Speaker 2: And welcome back in the locker room here the Sere's
- 21:54Speaker 2: audio network from Saint Vincent College in the Trove. Another
- 21:57Speaker 2: beautiful day. Football practice has come and gone already, the
- 22:02Speaker 2: team practicing without helmets today and so they will start
- 22:06Speaker 2: to get the pads on to do some hitting. A
- 22:08Speaker 2: momentous date tomorrow, I think that is tomorrow when that starts.
- 22:11Speaker 2: And then tomorrow also the Students Hall of Honor will
- 22:16Speaker 2: this year's class will be introduced. So that's gonna be exciting.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Lots of fun stuff happening up here tomorrow, but a
- 22:22Speaker 2: lot of stuff happening in this offseason. Kind of getting
- 22:25Speaker 2: you caught up is we're gonna, you know, then be
- 22:27Speaker 2: in locked lockstep with what's going on on the field
- 22:29Speaker 2: and during the practices. But there's just so much happening,
- 22:32Speaker 2: and of course everybody knows, you know, Mike McCarthy comes
- 22:35Speaker 2: in and he's got that reputation of developing young quarterbacks.
- 22:39Speaker 2: He had one that he inherited and Will Howard he
- 22:42Speaker 2: has another one, and Drew Aller who the pirates are
- 22:44Speaker 2: the this Tod's selected with a draft choice this year.
- 22:48Speaker 2: So you got two young quarterbacks trying to develop them.
- 22:51Speaker 2: You know, can you do both? That's been a big question.
- 22:55Speaker 2: How do you play these guys? You know, Will Howard
- 22:58Speaker 2: hasn't played in a while since the National Championship game.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy was asked about that this morning. What can
- 23:04Speaker 2: you do? You move on and you go. So the
- 23:07Speaker 2: quarterbacks and is there an air apparent to Aaron Rodgers
- 23:12Speaker 2: is going to be a massive story in the preseason.
- 23:15Speaker 2: It's probably going to peak during the preseason because if
- 23:19Speaker 2: all things go well, you're not going to see a
- 23:20Speaker 2: whole lot of either one of these guys during the
- 23:22Speaker 2: regular season. So but let's hear from one of those
- 23:25Speaker 2: guys now, and that is Will Howard talking about his
- 23:29Speaker 2: experience thus far.
- 23:31Speaker 4: I's going to portfolio pretty good, you know.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Day two.
- 23:36Speaker 5: We're just you know, taking it day by day, trying
- 23:38Speaker 5: to get better every day and maximize all the reps
- 23:41Speaker 5: that I get.
- 23:41Speaker 4: What's the competition been.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Like between you guys and the like. Mcarthy's really stressed. Stop.
- 23:45Speaker 2: You've got to make sure you get the started ready.
- 23:47Speaker 5: To get it again.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Aaron ready, how much between the rest of you guys,
- 23:50Speaker 2: what's the competition been like and how you guys are
- 23:52Speaker 2: making each other.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Day to it.
- 23:54Speaker 5: I mean, I don't think it's any different than any
- 23:55Speaker 5: other year. You know, you're always competing, and especially in
- 23:58Speaker 5: this league. You know, you're always competing to to keep
- 24:00Speaker 5: a job and to to get on the field, and uh,
- 24:03Speaker 5: you know, every opportunity you get you got to maximize
- 24:06Speaker 5: and uh, you know, I think at the end of
- 24:08Speaker 5: the day, it's you know, we have a great room,
- 24:09Speaker 5: and we we enjoy spending time together and and uh,
- 24:12Speaker 5: you know, it's not a toxic competition or anything.
- 24:14Speaker 4: You know, it's it's it's.
- 24:16Speaker 5: All out of love and we're all trying to make
- 24:17Speaker 5: the Pittsburgh Steelers better and make each other better. And
- 24:20Speaker 5: I think at the end of the day, that's that's
- 24:21Speaker 5: what competition brings out of you, is is it brings.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Out the best keep letting up from you.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Yeah, No, he's I mean, we'll talk about one of
- 24:30Speaker 5: the best two minute quarterbacks, uh, to ever play the game.
- 24:33Speaker 5: You know, just watching the way he operates and uh
- 24:36Speaker 5: and uh, you know the things he does at the
- 24:38Speaker 5: line of scrimmage and and also you know the the
- 24:40Speaker 5: things he.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Does in the huddle.
- 24:42Speaker 5: You know, I can I can always take some take
- 24:44Speaker 5: some notes from that and always trying to learn from
- 24:46Speaker 5: that guy.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And how do you assess.
- 24:49Speaker 4: I mean, obviously didn't finish well before thing?
- 24:53Speaker 2: Yeah, who you feel that play? Uh?
- 24:56Speaker 4: The guy picked it off over the middle of the field.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Well as a quarterback, I mean when we heard Mike
- 25:03Speaker 2: talk today about his six pillars of Steelers football, how
- 25:06Speaker 2: much does that have to resonate with you? And how
- 25:08Speaker 2: much do you have to unpape guys and up when
- 25:10Speaker 2: you're running too?
- 25:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you know, being a you know, in
- 25:13Speaker 5: the in the quarterback position, you're kind of thrust into
- 25:16Speaker 5: that leadership role.
- 25:17Speaker 2: You have to be a leader.
- 25:19Speaker 5: And you know, obviously trying to follow suit with Aaron
- 25:21Speaker 5: and and keep everything the same that the coach McCarthy's saying.
- 25:24Speaker 5: You know, I really love what he's brought and and
- 25:26Speaker 5: love the culture that he's trying to instill in us.
- 25:28Speaker 5: He's really trying to take you know, the blue collar
- 25:31Speaker 5: the grit of the city of Pittsburgh and kind of
- 25:33Speaker 5: instilling that into this team and and you know, the
- 25:36Speaker 5: six pillars all reflect that, and I think just every
- 25:39Speaker 5: day trying to embody that as a as a person
- 25:42Speaker 5: and as a team, and trying to you know, bring
- 25:44Speaker 5: guys along, you know, I think is really important being
- 25:48Speaker 5: a surprised MS from Yeah, no, absolutely, I mean just
- 25:54Speaker 5: sitting in meetings with him, and you know, with Tom
- 25:57Speaker 5: and and Ange and Aaron obviously now you can pick
- 26:01Speaker 5: up something at least every single day, and you know,
- 26:03Speaker 5: I'm just trying to, you know, pick one little thing
- 26:05Speaker 5: up every day, get better every single day, and and
- 26:08Speaker 5: learn as much as I can, because that's this is
- 26:10Speaker 5: a big you know, I know I haven't I haven't
- 26:12Speaker 5: played yet in the NFL, and I still have a
- 26:13Speaker 5: lot to learn, you know, I was obviously I have
- 26:16Speaker 5: you know, one year under my belt, but you know,
- 26:18Speaker 5: I'm just trying to pick up every little thing that
- 26:20Speaker 5: I can.
- 26:20Speaker 2: You know what with this offense, how do you feel
- 26:23Speaker 2: that it hits your skill set?
- 26:25Speaker 5: I think it fits it really well. Honestly, it it
- 26:28Speaker 5: kind of reminds me, you know, of of the system
- 26:31Speaker 5: I ran at Ohio State.
- 26:32Speaker 4: It really does.
- 26:32Speaker 5: And you know, just the attention to detail and the
- 26:35Speaker 5: footwork and the reads progressions, the different kinds of progressions
- 26:38Speaker 5: and and plays. You know, like when I got to
- 26:42Speaker 5: Ohio State, like coach Day harped on every little thing,
- 26:45Speaker 5: and then you know, getting here last year was you
- 26:48Speaker 5: know a little different, but you know it was still
- 26:50Speaker 5: very detail oriented. But but Mike is you know, even
- 26:52Speaker 5: more like he is to to the you know, the
- 26:55Speaker 5: step and to the you know, he has names for
- 26:57Speaker 5: every step in the drop like it's super detailed. I
- 27:00Speaker 5: just think it fits my play style and it it
- 27:03Speaker 5: really enhances my ability to play from the pocket, you
- 27:05Speaker 5: know better.
- 27:07Speaker 2: How much you any distigation to get that game action
- 27:10Speaker 2: the first game at Bilt.
- 27:12Speaker 5: I mean, you know, us football players, it's like you
- 27:15Speaker 5: can you can practice as much as you want and
- 27:17Speaker 5: and practice is huge, and practice is you know, where
- 27:20Speaker 5: the work is done. But you know the real reward
- 27:22Speaker 5: and you know, talks about we play for free on Sundays.
- 27:25Speaker 5: That's that's the fun part, you know. And you know,
- 27:27Speaker 5: for me, I haven't played in a in a real
- 27:29Speaker 5: football game since the National Championship. So you know, I'm
- 27:32Speaker 5: just you know, god willing staying healthy and and getting
- 27:35Speaker 5: myself ready for those preseason games. Because I just can't
- 27:38Speaker 5: wait to get back out there with the live bullets
- 27:39Speaker 5: and and uh, you know, just step into the fire again,
- 27:42Speaker 5: because that's that's why we play this game.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Do you have a moment in a meeting that Champas
- 27:48Speaker 2: played a moment play?
- 27:49Speaker 4: You know, yeah, yeah, I mean that's a good question.
- 27:55Speaker 4: You know.
- 27:55Speaker 5: I think it's really cool when especially like when we
- 27:58Speaker 5: come off of you know, we did this last year too,
- 28:01Speaker 5: you know, coming off of a break or coming off
- 28:03Speaker 5: of you know, the off season. Just sitting back and
- 28:05Speaker 5: talking about what we did in the off season and like, hey,
- 28:07Speaker 5: what was your what was your highlight of the off
- 28:09Speaker 5: season and sharing that stuff, and you know, just hearing
- 28:13Speaker 5: hearing about each other's lives outside of football. You know,
- 28:15Speaker 5: I think that just brings us closer together. And you know,
- 28:17Speaker 5: even hearing like Ange and Tom and what they were
- 28:20Speaker 5: doing over the off season, and you know, it just
- 28:22Speaker 5: it just brings a human element into it a lot,
- 28:24Speaker 5: and we have a lot of fun and it's it's
- 28:27Speaker 5: been a good time.
- 28:29Speaker 2: So uh look, you know, we know that competition. We've
- 28:34Speaker 2: talked about this a lot over the last couple of
- 28:35Speaker 2: days and trying to get other guys better and having
- 28:38Speaker 2: a good attitude about it is good. And just to
- 28:40Speaker 2: hear right off the top of that Will Howard sink
- 28:43Speaker 2: it's not a toxic competition. It's really really important for
- 28:47Speaker 2: a team.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I mean, I think when you hear that, that's almost
- 28:52Speaker 3: the best thing that you could wish for in a
- 28:54Speaker 3: competitive environment. It's not toxic, right, And what you probably
- 28:59Speaker 3: ask yourself, what do toxic look like in a room
- 29:02Speaker 3: if there's a competition with holding information, not talking, having
- 29:08Speaker 3: side conversations, not being with the group, or being very
- 29:12Speaker 3: tight lipped on information and not being able to have
- 29:15Speaker 3: open dialogue.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Especially when you hear who's in that room.
- 29:18Speaker 3: I mean, let's just digest that all the names that
- 29:21Speaker 3: he named in there, right, Coach McCarthy's in there, Angelico's
- 29:25Speaker 3: in there, Arth is in there.
- 29:27Speaker 2: And then it's the fore court. It's seven people in
- 29:29Speaker 2: a quarterback room.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Yeah, right, So the amount of football knowledge that's being
- 29:34Speaker 3: disseminated in that space. And let's not discount what Mason
- 29:38Speaker 3: Rudolph has gone through, right, a guy who's we can
- 29:41Speaker 3: call a journeyman because he's been to more than one
- 29:43Speaker 3: place and he came back and he's won games for
- 29:47Speaker 3: you he's been to the playoffs. Like Aaron's not the
- 29:50Speaker 3: only one that's had that type of experience. He's had
- 29:53Speaker 3: the most success at that experience. But that's a lot
- 29:56Speaker 3: for two young guys essentially starting at square one, and like, well,
- 30:00Speaker 3: Howard was here for a year, but he wasn't an
- 30:03Speaker 3: active participant, and you know, you have him and Aller
- 30:07Speaker 3: looking at these guys, there's a lot to glean And
- 30:10Speaker 3: like you said, as long as I can learn one
- 30:11Speaker 3: little thing better, I could take one thing away from
- 30:13Speaker 3: the day better, it's gonna make me a better player.
- 30:15Speaker 2: And I think that's the cool thing about it. And
- 30:17Speaker 2: they're open with the conversation. They're open with dialogue. You know,
- 30:20Speaker 2: they even talk about how you know, McCarthy and Aaron
- 30:23Speaker 2: go at each other like an old married couple, right,
- 30:26Speaker 2: because they've got thirteen years of experience together, right.
- 30:29Speaker 3: So that's something that's really cool to see and you
- 30:32Speaker 3: can see you can project yourself in the future on
- 30:34Speaker 3: how things can go. But I think having all of
- 30:38Speaker 3: that just makes for a better environment for all parties.
- 30:40Speaker 2: And by the way, you know, Mason Rudolph I think
- 30:44Speaker 2: has gotten big time kudos for being a great teammate.
- 30:47Speaker 2: So not only is he a valuable guy that can
- 30:50Speaker 2: come in and give you an opportunity to win games,
- 30:52Speaker 2: but the kind of guy that'll you know, there are
- 30:55Speaker 2: certain guys who you know can bust on the star player. Yeah,
- 31:03Speaker 2: and most guys can't, and most guys wouldn't dare And
- 31:07Speaker 2: some guys can occasionally do it and pull it off.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Some guys can do it in a bad way, and
- 31:13Speaker 2: then it's like, uh, next thing, you know, you're at
- 31:16Speaker 2: being told to clear out your locker. Other guys can
- 31:18Speaker 2: do it in away. Other guys could do it in
- 31:21Speaker 2: a way that brings everybody together. I don't know how
- 31:25Speaker 2: much Mason does of that, but I do know that
- 31:28Speaker 2: I've just heard he's a really really good teammate and
- 31:31Speaker 2: and keeps everybody in a good headspace. I guess that's
- 31:35Speaker 2: probably the Maybe that's the term that would you know,
- 31:37Speaker 2: without really knowing the ins and outs of what that means,
- 31:40Speaker 2: but keeps you in a good headspace, things loose, right, yeah, yeah,
- 31:45Speaker 2: intense environment.
- 31:46Speaker 3: You know, he's the guy that's kind of like the mediator,
- 31:48Speaker 3: the go between, right, because he's gonna be eyes and
- 31:51Speaker 3: ears for Aaron from the sidelines, and then he's also
- 31:55Speaker 3: the guy that can disseminate the information to the young guys, right,
- 31:57Speaker 3: you know, because you always say backup quarterbacks to clipboard guy,
- 32:00Speaker 3: right right, you know. And he's the one that's keeping
- 32:02Speaker 3: track of things well, he can relay that information. Plus
- 32:04Speaker 3: he also is going to be talking to the coaches.
- 32:06Speaker 3: He's gonna be right next to the coaches.
- 32:07Speaker 2: So I think he's a good middleman because he has
- 32:11Speaker 2: that working knowledge, he has experience, but he also knows
- 32:15Speaker 2: what his role is. He's not trying to usurp the
- 32:18Speaker 2: king right right, you know, he's there. He's like, Hey,
- 32:21Speaker 2: I'm good with being in the in the role that
- 32:23Speaker 2: you define for me. I'm really good at that. Another
- 32:25Speaker 2: guy I think was excellent at that during his time
- 32:27Speaker 2: Charlie Batch. Yes, yep, I was thinking of the same thing,
- 32:29Speaker 2: same exact type of deal.
- 32:31Speaker 3: I'm he's not trying to take Ben's job, but he's
- 32:33Speaker 3: also trying to make job Ben's job easier, right, And
- 32:35Speaker 3: he's the one that if things go awry, you know,
- 32:38Speaker 3: you're not going to want to necessarily talk to a
- 32:40Speaker 3: coach if he hasn't played. I want to talk to
- 32:41Speaker 3: the player that also sees it, but he still can
- 32:44Speaker 3: act like a coach. And that's what Charlie was for
- 32:47Speaker 3: Ben for so many years, and I think that's what
- 32:48Speaker 3: you kind of see developing with Mason. Regardless of whoever
- 32:52Speaker 3: is coming in here. Mason's always kind of been that
- 32:54Speaker 3: number two, that's been the guy who can be the
- 32:57Speaker 3: translator for everybody, right.
- 32:58Speaker 2: And Charlie of course came up with this starting the
- 33:00Speaker 2: experience with the Lions, and you knew that if you
- 33:03Speaker 2: put him in there, he was going to give you
- 33:05Speaker 2: a chance to win. Which gets me to I think
- 33:08Speaker 2: the topic that everyone's thinking, Well, there's two topics everyone
- 33:10Speaker 2: are everyone's really thinking about as far as this quarterback
- 33:14Speaker 2: position to backup quarterback position. We know who the number
- 33:16Speaker 2: one is and we're gonna get both to both of
- 33:19Speaker 2: those questions while we continue in the locker room here
- 33:22Speaker 2: on this hit, there's audio network.

- 34:13Speaker 2: So welcome back inside the locker room here at Saint
- 34:15Speaker 2: Vincent College where we're watching the mower working on field
- 34:19Speaker 2: number two. It's very quiet out here now, but the
- 34:22Speaker 2: weather here has been spectacular for the first three days,
- 34:27Speaker 2: remained spectacular today. So we're talking about you just heard
- 34:31Speaker 2: from Will Howard in the last segment, and we've been
- 34:33Speaker 2: talking about, you know, the quarterback position. And again, Mike McCarthy, assay,
- 34:40Speaker 2: are you worried that Will Howard hasn't played since the
- 34:43Speaker 2: Ohio State championship game in a real game. Well, what
- 34:45Speaker 2: do you what do you do about nothing? There's nothing
- 34:47Speaker 2: you can do about that. And you know, Mike McCarthy,
- 34:50Speaker 2: we went through this yesterday about his background as a
- 34:54Speaker 2: quarterback coach, then an offensive coordinator, and then of course
- 34:56Speaker 2: the head coach. You know, he calls it going to
- 34:58Speaker 2: quarterback school. By the way, one of the questions I'm
- 35:01Speaker 2: gonna have to ask him at some point, do you
- 35:02Speaker 2: ever graduate from quarterbacks school? Are you? Are you perpetually
- 35:06Speaker 2: a student in quarterbacks school?
- 35:08Speaker 3: Apparently twenty one years and Aaron Rodgers is still still
- 35:11Speaker 3: a student, So there is There is no ascension level.
- 35:14Speaker 2: It's just when you retire, you just stop doing it.
- 35:16Speaker 2: He's he's a he's a very very very good student.
- 35:20Speaker 2: He's probably in the front of the class emeritus. He's
- 35:22Speaker 2: probably a TA. Yeah, he's maybe he's a TA. That's
- 35:25Speaker 2: a good call. Maybe he's a TA. Yeah. So I
- 35:28Speaker 2: think there are two things about this quarterback uh situation.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Actually several things I said too, but that you know,
- 35:36Speaker 2: more of cropped up into my mind as we went
- 35:39Speaker 2: to commercial break. The first thing I want to ask
- 35:41Speaker 2: is just simply, we talked about roster construction yesterday and
- 35:46Speaker 2: went through the roster yesterday. I don't like doing it
- 35:50Speaker 2: quite this early, but you know, because he broke a
- 35:54Speaker 2: story for us a couple of days ago, club reporter
- 35:57Speaker 2: Schaefer King wanted me to go over this steerer's roster
- 36:00Speaker 2: breakdown and what I thought. So I walking the dog
- 36:03Speaker 2: and I got back last So I thinking, okay, let's
- 36:05Speaker 2: go through the fifty three. What is it going to
- 36:06Speaker 2: look like. And you know, we talked about this yesterday,
- 36:09Speaker 2: I think to me, and we'll see two of the
- 36:13Speaker 2: biggest places on the roster where you know, if everybody
- 36:16Speaker 2: stays healthy, we knock on wood again, big people which
- 36:21Speaker 2: are in high demand in the sport. Yeah, good, big
- 36:24Speaker 2: people are going to either you are going to try
- 36:27Speaker 2: to sneak him throw on waivers, or they're just going
- 36:29Speaker 2: to have to be released. I just don't see how
- 36:30Speaker 2: you can keep if everybody stays healthy, the number of
- 36:34Speaker 2: quality big guys they have, can they keep four quarterback?
- 36:38Speaker 2: I just can't see how they can do it. Max,
- 36:40Speaker 2: I don't either. I mean, the reason why they were
- 36:43Speaker 2: able to kind of sneak well Howard throws because they
- 36:45Speaker 2: were able to irm right, That's how you're able to
- 36:48Speaker 2: keep him, because I think if he wasn't injured, you
- 36:51Speaker 2: had to make a decision and you might have lost
- 36:54Speaker 2: him potentially if you put him out there in free agency.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Injuries Really the only way I see that you can
- 37:02Speaker 2: keep four. There's no other way on an active roster,
- 37:05Speaker 2: especially when you talked about it, the largest concentration of
- 37:09Speaker 2: your team for like spots O line, D line, so
- 37:13Speaker 2: the most amount of bodies. Literally you'll have nine offensive
- 37:16Speaker 2: linemen and at least seven to eight defensive linemen that
- 37:21Speaker 2: you're going to keep. Well, that's seventeen guys out of
- 37:23Speaker 2: your fifty three gone, right, and then now we still
- 37:27Speaker 2: haven't gotten into your receivers, your tight ends, your linebackers
- 37:33Speaker 2: inside outside right, your dbs. You need to keep a
- 37:36Speaker 2: lot of dbs too on that roster.
- 37:39Speaker 3: I'd say dB or defensive backfield and defensive line for
- 37:44Speaker 3: the DEFENSI side is the largest chunk those two groups
- 37:46Speaker 3: right there. Then linebacker kind of fills in in the
- 37:48Speaker 3: middle because you're looking at too deep. But it's two
- 37:50Speaker 3: different specialties, right you're keeping in that group. So it's
- 37:55Speaker 3: a lot of bodies for the big boys. That then
- 37:58Speaker 3: gets asserted. I mean you're taking about a third of
- 38:00Speaker 3: your roster alone in just that little over a third
- 38:03Speaker 3: if ross's just O line and D line, because of
- 38:06Speaker 3: how many positions they take up on a field.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Again, I just look at their too deep on the
- 38:09Speaker 2: offensive line and think, you know, even if somebody really
- 38:14Speaker 2: impresses in camp, Like, for example, Stephen Jones is back
- 38:17Speaker 2: in camp this year, and he was a guy early
- 38:19Speaker 2: on last year was getting a lot of buzz, kind
- 38:22Speaker 2: of like Dylan Cook had the year before. Hey, this
- 38:24Speaker 2: guy's this guy's got something into and then third preseason
- 38:27Speaker 2: then there was just a fade because these guys, you know,
- 38:30Speaker 2: it's a different environment that then than they're used to,
- 38:33Speaker 2: or whatever the reason may be. But he's a really
- 38:36Speaker 2: intriguing guy. He's back in camp this year now and
- 38:39Speaker 2: then strong too.
- 38:40Speaker 3: I mean, he was a guy that you would consider
- 38:42Speaker 3: any other circumstance, any other team. He's definitely considered on
- 38:47Speaker 3: your top eight to any other situation.
- 38:49Speaker 2: You're happy to have him as your ninth guy. Yeah,
- 38:51Speaker 2: you're like, oh crap, okay, Yeah, I would love to
- 38:53Speaker 2: have this guy. He's a good locker room guy. He's strong,
- 38:56Speaker 2: he's physical at that guard, he's smart. But you're weighing
- 39:00Speaker 2: up against draft picks, right, you're winning these veterans you
- 39:02Speaker 2: brought in.
- 39:03Speaker 3: You also have an ongoing battle for two starting positions.
- 39:07Speaker 2: On this offensive line, which we can get to next hour. Yes,
- 39:09Speaker 2: because there was more on that yes morning too.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Where do you fit in in that and you're the
- 39:14Speaker 3: odd man out because now we're you usually a top nine,
- 39:17Speaker 3: you're a top twelve guy on this team particularly YEP.
- 39:21Speaker 3: So it's a tough place to meet. Like I said,
- 39:23Speaker 3: we're gonna lose quality guys that are going to go
- 39:26Speaker 3: on to start contribute and play for other teams. Rosers
- 39:29Speaker 3: that we're seeing out here.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Of the ninety, I.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Would venture to say we have at least ten to
- 39:33Speaker 3: eleven guys who are going to go elsewhere and play.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna have to lose. So and again, just
- 39:39Speaker 2: to reiterate, because we talked about this, and we're gonna
- 39:40Speaker 2: talk more about the offensive line on so I don't
- 39:42Speaker 2: want to get too far into the week because I
- 39:44Speaker 2: want to wrap up the quarterback thing. But we talked
- 39:45Speaker 2: about this yesterday. Why are we harping on this. Why
- 39:49Speaker 2: do we care about that twelveth offensive lineman. Well, look
- 39:52Speaker 2: who's competing for a starting right tackle spot this year
- 39:55Speaker 2: in camp? Dylan Cook. He was not among the nine,
- 40:00Speaker 2: he was among the twelve a year ago. He did
- 40:02Speaker 2: not make your roster last year, and now they're talking
- 40:06Speaker 2: about him starting at right tackle this year. So that's
- 40:09Speaker 2: why we look at these things with a great deal
- 40:12Speaker 2: of importance. So I agree with you. I can't see
- 40:16Speaker 2: him caring for Okay, So now comes the next question.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers, of course, is a lock.
- 40:24Speaker 4: To me.
- 40:25Speaker 2: You've got a team that you're hoping is going to
- 40:29Speaker 2: make the playoffs and make some noise when they get there. Correct.
- 40:32Speaker 2: So let's say Aaron misses a game. He remember he
- 40:36Speaker 2: missed the Bears game last year, misses a game or
- 40:39Speaker 2: two forty two years old, six starting quarterbacks have started
- 40:42Speaker 2: a game at that age in NFL history, seventeen straight. Right,
- 40:47Speaker 2: So if heaven forbid, there's a serious issue that keeps
- 40:52Speaker 2: him out for any length of time. You can say
- 40:57Speaker 2: that with most teams and most quarterbacks, you're done. Season's over. Right.
- 41:01Speaker 2: We look at the Bengals. You lose Joe Burrow, your
- 41:03Speaker 2: season's over, and you had to trade for Joe Flacco.
- 41:06Speaker 2: That's how bad it was. Your season's done, you're finished,
- 41:08Speaker 2: it's over. You lose him for eight or nine, you're
- 41:10Speaker 2: not making the playoffs. That's just the way it is
- 41:12Speaker 2: with most teams. Boy, there's that middle ground where if
- 41:18Speaker 2: you're missing somebody for three or four games, don't you
- 41:23Speaker 2: want a veteran that can come in that started in
- 41:26Speaker 2: the league, that understands what needs to be done taking
- 41:29Speaker 2: your team to the playoffs before and we literally done
- 41:32Speaker 2: it on his resume. We saw Mason Rudolph last year
- 41:35Speaker 2: in Chicago, you know, with the Bears team that has
- 41:38Speaker 2: it turned out was an awfully good Bears team. Give
- 41:41Speaker 2: him every opportunity to win that game. Did they win
- 41:43Speaker 2: the game? No, on the road, they didn't win the game,
- 41:45Speaker 2: but boy, he sure gave him an excellent chance of
- 41:47Speaker 2: winning that game. You know, I think as you look
- 41:50Speaker 2: at the roster right now, you have Will Howard who
- 41:53Speaker 2: hasn't played a game since the National Championship Game two
- 41:56Speaker 2: years ago, Right two years ago. You have Drew Aller,
- 41:58Speaker 2: who's a rookie who they're trying to rebuild from the
- 42:01Speaker 2: ground up. That's what they've talked about doing. And it
- 42:03Speaker 2: was injured last year, right injured last year. So you're
- 42:06Speaker 2: thinking of a bit of a project there. Well, you're
- 42:10Speaker 2: a team going back to the original premise built to
- 42:13Speaker 2: try to have success in the playoffs. Do you need that?
- 42:17Speaker 2: Do you need not choose to need Mason Rudolph in
- 42:22Speaker 2: case that happens, In case somebody misses three or four games,
- 42:26Speaker 2: and I say yes, Aaron, I say yes right now.
- 42:29Speaker 2: As it stands right now, we.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Haven't played any preseason I understood, So I haven't seen
- 42:32Speaker 3: a single professional throw from Will Howard or Drew Aller
- 42:36Speaker 3: to give me any confidence yet.
- 42:38Speaker 2: But as it stands right now, you have.
- 42:40Speaker 3: To keep Will Howard, I mean, I'm sorry, you have
- 42:43Speaker 3: to keep Mason Rudolph right and you got to see
- 42:45Speaker 3: what the potential is of the two for what.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Future expectations could because like you said, this is more.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Of a win now mode. You don't go Michael Pittman
- 42:53Speaker 3: Junior and Rico o'dowdele, you know, to help bolster Aaron
- 42:57Speaker 3: Rodgers if you don't plan on wanting to win now, right,
- 43:00Speaker 3: you know. Mike Pursua put this question out here on
- 43:02Speaker 3: our show the first day. All the Steelers had to
- 43:06Speaker 3: do from a year ago now this year is answer
- 43:08Speaker 3: the question, how do we get thirteen minutes better? Because
- 43:13Speaker 3: you were still in the game against Houston and the
- 43:15Speaker 3: playoffs a year ago until the last thirteen minutes of
- 43:19Speaker 3: that fourth.
- 43:19Speaker 2: Quarter, it is hard for people to remember that, Yeah,
- 43:22Speaker 2: how quickly and badly it unraveled and it was quick
- 43:26Speaker 2: fastening in a hurry. That game was a tight game,
- 43:29Speaker 2: yep y set for the long and.
- 43:33Speaker 3: Working into it, and you just needed the last thirteen
- 43:37Speaker 3: minutes of a sixty minute game to go differently. And
- 43:40Speaker 3: you're in the second round. So that's all they're looking
- 43:44Speaker 3: for is thirteen minutes better.
- 43:46Speaker 2: And it's an interesting way of putting it, right. Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 3: So that's why I say a Mason Rudolph is a
- 43:51Speaker 3: necessity for that as it stands right now, until I
- 43:55Speaker 3: see some fantastic things done in the preseason, I feel
- 43:58Speaker 3: like Mason Rudolph has to be your number two.
- 44:00Speaker 2: So that is the now, and I agree with you,
- 44:03Speaker 2: that's the now. Now, let's take a step back and
- 44:06Speaker 2: gaze into the middle distance. We're not gonna eat it.
- 44:09Speaker 2: You can never gaze into the future in the NFL. Well, well,
- 44:12Speaker 2: if you're the Browns, that's all you do. You have
- 44:16Speaker 2: to can we trade four years in the future draft picks?
- 44:19Speaker 2: So I think that you're looking at two guys, So
- 44:25Speaker 2: what what is what is the evaluate First of all,
- 44:27Speaker 2: both those guys are going to be evaluated. What's the
- 44:30Speaker 2: evaluation process? If Mason Rudolph right now, from this vantage
- 44:34Speaker 2: point is a lot to make the team for the
- 44:35Speaker 2: reasons we mentioned really good, really good guy in the clubhouse,
- 44:40Speaker 2: really good teammate, and a and a good quarterback that
- 44:43Speaker 2: can help you, like Charlie Batch, you know, get you
- 44:47Speaker 2: two and two with Ben's out for four games. Right.
- 44:50Speaker 2: You know, Charlie was never put in a position where
- 44:52Speaker 2: he had to start ten or twelve games for this Steelers, right,
- 44:55Speaker 2: So we don't know how that would have gone. But
- 44:58Speaker 2: we do know that again, when teams lose starting quarterbacks,
- 45:01Speaker 2: it's usually not for the season. It's usually not a
- 45:04Speaker 2: good thing. So you have Mason Rudolph as a as
- 45:07Speaker 2: a true necessity in one possible scenario. Yeah. By the way,
- 45:12Speaker 2: it reminds me of The Terminator, one of my all
- 45:16Speaker 2: time favorite movies. One possible future. That's one possible future.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Or if you're younger like me, you go to the
- 45:22Speaker 3: you go to Marvel and you go to Avenger's Infinity
- 45:25Speaker 3: War and you have doctor Strange looking at Tony Starkins
- 45:28Speaker 3: saying there's just one.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Way, Yes, that's why. But in this one there's many ways.
- 45:33Speaker 2: There's many ways. So thank you for reminding me how
- 45:35Speaker 2: much younger you are. Very nice you so I do
- 45:39Speaker 2: love the terminator anyway. So if you're looking into that
- 45:44Speaker 2: middle distance, look at this roster you've built. Look at
- 45:47Speaker 2: this solid roster with two tight ends under contract, nine
- 45:53Speaker 2: to ten offensive linemen you feel good about, many of
- 45:56Speaker 2: whom are under club control. Beyond this, just traded for
- 46:00Speaker 2: Michael Pittman and drafted Jeremy Bernard, thus solidifying your wide
- 46:05Speaker 2: receiver position. So if you just look at it from
- 46:07Speaker 2: the offense perspective, you have Dabble, and you have Warren,
- 46:10Speaker 2: and then you have you know you're gonna fill out
- 46:11Speaker 2: the rest of the running back class. This is a
- 46:15Speaker 2: tremendous situation in which to drop a quarterback. Okay, so
- 46:20Speaker 2: let's just extend this further out. You'd like it to
- 46:23Speaker 2: be either Will Howard or Drew Aller. Yeah, that would
- 46:27Speaker 2: be the ideal scenario because the other scenario is you
- 46:30Speaker 2: gotta trade up to get somebody. Okay, So there goes
- 46:33Speaker 2: this year's coming you twenty twenty sevens, first, twenty twenty
- 46:36Speaker 2: eighths first, probably probably a second round. If the Steelers
- 46:39Speaker 2: finished where we think they're gonna finish, probably a second
- 46:42Speaker 2: round pick, maybe even a player. Thus saying, okay, we're
- 46:46Speaker 2: looking in the middle distance. But this group, that look
- 46:48Speaker 2: that we're talking about now, you know things age quickly
- 46:51Speaker 2: in the NFL, that group better still be good two
- 46:54Speaker 2: years from now because you're not gonna have any other

- 47:01Speaker 2: a different if you could have if one of these
- 47:04Speaker 2: two guys can save you from having to go down

- 47:46Speaker 2: than your normal who's going to be the backup quarterback?
- 47:49Speaker 2: Do we have a developmental quarterback? Because there's just so
- 47:52Speaker 2: much more at play, so we're gonna continue to dive
- 47:54Speaker 2: into this. We're also gonna talk a little bit about
