Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Winston was always going to turn on Luxon
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This was always going to happen. The closer you get
- 0:02Speaker 1: to an election, the more your friends become your enemies
- 0:05Speaker 1: under MMP, your frenemies. Winston's office released OIA documents showing
- 0:10Speaker 1: that Luson's people wanted to go further in supporting Trump's
- 0:14Speaker 1: war in Iran. The Foreign Minister's Office and m FAT,
- 0:18Speaker 1: in their wisdom, cautioned against this. For most of us
- 0:22Speaker 1: would probably understand to be good reasons. Right. This was
- 0:25Speaker 1: straight after the war began. This is a story out
- 0:28Speaker 1: in the Herald this morning, and so a spokesman for
- 0:30Speaker 1: Winston Peters has said that Luckson's support for the war
- 0:34Speaker 1: was imprudent and would have run counter to our national interests.
- 0:39Speaker 1: They said experience matters in foreign policy. Now, after that
- 0:42Speaker 1: statement was given last night, we had talks between the
- 0:46Speaker 1: PM and the Foreign Minister at the Beehive. We're told
- 0:48Speaker 1: bit of a crisis meeting. Luxon is heading back. He's
- 0:52Speaker 1: saying that the emails mischaracterize his position. He's saying the
- 0:56Speaker 1: release of the emails puts politics ahead of the national interest. So,
- 1:01Speaker 1: as you can see, quite the mess. The problem here
- 1:04Speaker 1: is for Luxon, not for Peter's In my view, Luxon
- 1:07Speaker 1: is the one who has struggled to articulate himself on
- 1:10Speaker 1: the war. Peters has not. Luxon is the one whose support,
- 1:15Speaker 1: whose support and the Poles has been falling. Peter's is
- 1:17Speaker 1: the opposite. Luxon is the one who's been there five minutes.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Peter's is not. I reckon. If you were to poll
- 1:24Speaker 1: Kiwis and ask who do you trust more on matters
- 1:27Speaker 1: of foreign affairs in war, I imagine after forty years
- 1:30Speaker 1: in Parliament and a few runs at the Foreign Affairs job,
- 1:33Speaker 1: Peters would probably come out on top. Try to put
- 1:36Speaker 1: Peter's in his place is hard enough to do it
- 1:39Speaker 1: the best of times. Trying to do it with one
- 1:41Speaker 1: hand tied behind your back, the crowd sharing for your
- 1:44Speaker 1: opponent on a stage of which you are unfamiliar with,
- 1:48Speaker 1: probably not going to end well. For more from Early
