- 0:16Speaker 1: No longer do I call you servants. For the servant
- 0:20Speaker 1: knoweth not what his Lord doeth. But I have called
- 0:23Speaker 1: you friends. For all things that I heard from my
- 0:26Speaker 1: Father I have made known unto you John fifteen fifteen.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The highest proof of true friendship, and one great source
- 0:37Speaker 1: of its blessedness, is the intimacy that holds nothing back
- 0:41Speaker 1: and admits the friend to share our inmost secrets. It
- 0:45Speaker 1: is a blessed thing to be Christ's servant, his redeemed
- 0:49Speaker 1: one's delight to call themselves his slaves. Christ had often
- 0:53Speaker 1: spoken of the disciples as his servants in his great love.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Our Lord now says, no longer do I call you servants.
- 1:02Speaker 1: With the coming of the Holy Spirit, a new era
- 1:05Speaker 1: was to be inaugurated. The servant knoweth not what his
- 1:08Speaker 1: Lord doeth. He has to obey without being consulted or
- 1:13Speaker 1: admitted into the secret of all his master's plans. But
- 1:17Speaker 1: I have called you friends for all things I heard
- 1:21Speaker 1: from my Father, I have made known unto you, Christ's
- 1:24Speaker 1: friends share with him in all the secrets the Father
- 1:28Speaker 1: has entrusted to him. Let us think what this means.
- 1:33Speaker 1: When Christ spoke of keeping his father's commandments, he did
- 1:37Speaker 1: not mean merely what was written in holy scripture, but
- 1:40Speaker 1: those special commandments which were communicated to him day by
- 1:44Speaker 1: day and from hour to hour. It was of these,
- 1:48Speaker 1: he said. The Father loveth the son, and showeth him
- 1:52Speaker 1: all things that he doeth, and he will show him
- 1:55Speaker 1: greater things. All that Christ did was God's working. God
- 2:00Speaker 1: showed it to Christ so that he carried out the
- 2:02Speaker 1: Father's will and purpose, not as man often does, blindly
- 2:07Speaker 1: and unintelligently, but with full understanding and approval. As one
- 2:12Speaker 1: who stood in God's counsel. He knew God's plan. And
- 2:17Speaker 1: this now is the blessedness of being Christ's friends. That
- 2:21Speaker 1: we do not as servants, do His will without much
- 2:24Speaker 1: spiritual insight into its meaning and aim, but are admitted
- 2:28Speaker 1: as an inner circle into some knowledge of God's more
- 2:32Speaker 1: secret thoughts. From the day of Pentecost on by the
- 2:36Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, Christ was to lead his disciples into the
- 2:41Speaker 1: spiritual apprehension of the mysteries of the Kingdom of which
- 2:44Speaker 1: he had hitherto spoken only by parables. Friendship delights in fellowship.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Friends hold counsel, Friends dare to trust to each other
- 2:55Speaker 1: what they would not, for anything have others know. What
- 2:59Speaker 1: is it that gives a Christian access to this holy
- 3:02Speaker 1: intimacy with Jesus, that gives him the spiritual capacity for
- 3:07Speaker 1: receiving the communications Christ has to make of what the
- 3:10Speaker 1: Father has shown him. Ye are my friends, if ye
- 3:14Speaker 1: do what I command you. It is loving obedience that
- 3:18Speaker 1: purifies the soul, that refers not only to the commandments
- 3:22Speaker 1: of the Word, but to that blessed application of the
- 3:26Speaker 1: Word to our daily life, which none but our Lord
- 3:29Speaker 1: himself can give. But as these are waited for in
- 3:32Speaker 1: dependence and humility, and faithfully obeyed, the soul becomes fitted
- 3:38Speaker 1: for ever closer fellowship, and the daily life may become
- 3:42Speaker 1: a continual experience. I have called you friends. For all
- 3:47Speaker 1: things I have heard from my Father I have made
- 3:50Speaker 1: known unto you. I have called you friends. What an
- 3:55Speaker 1: unspeakable honor, What a heavenly privilege, O, Savior, speak the
- 4:01Speaker 1: word with power into my soul. I have called you
- 4:04Speaker 1: my friend, whom I love, whom I trust, to whom
- 4:09Speaker 1: I make known all that passes between my father and me.
