- 0:02S1: A listener production.
- 0:04S2: Bailey Brown one side and burnt to a crisp on
- 0:07S2: the other. Drives me mad. Fresh from the uneven toaster
- 0:11S2: of white, it's Matt and Alex all day.
- 0:13S3: Breakfast. Yes. Welcome to this podcast where every day we
- 0:16S3: try to find the pursuit of happiness. But today, Meadow Keen,
- 0:20S3: we're in search of the trivial pursuit of happiness.
- 0:23S4: Oh, yeah, that's right. We have been visiting our locally
- 0:27S4: owned trivia team in a Pursuit to Greatness and we
- 0:32S4: thought we would visit them on home soil in Brisbane
- 0:35S4: where we are today and try to achieve that milestone.
- 0:40S4: All will be.
- 0:40S3: Revealed in a moment as we try to go for
- 0:43S3: trivial superstardom as well as that we've got a bit
- 0:46S3: of mind blown today.
- 0:47S4: You've also uncovered a new trend, which I had never
- 0:51S4: heard about it. You thought you'd you know, you thought
- 0:53S4: you'd broken ground with the Pappy shower. Well, well, well.
- 0:58S4: Just you wait to hear what people are celebrating now.
- 1:01S3: It should be a very fun show. Stick with us.
- 1:03S3: It's Matt and Alex all day. Breakfast.
- 1:04S5: This is just the start.
- 1:05S6: Everyone ready?
- 1:06S7: Let's get this show on the road.
- 1:08S8: Let's go. Here we go. Here we go. Here we go.
- 1:10S8: Matt and Alex all day. Breakfast.
- 1:13S3: Well, Matt, it's been a very fun week so far
- 1:15S3: in Breezy, but let's talk turkey here. All right? We
- 1:20S3: were here for one reason and one reason, not friendship.
- 1:23S3: That's out the window. We are here to win. We
- 1:26S3: are investors. And much like our boy Ryan Reynolds, who
- 1:31S3: we have met before. And you told him about when
- 1:34S3: you performed Bohemian Rhapsody at a pub and said it
- 1:36S3: was the greatest karaoke performance of all time.
- 1:40S4: I might have overshot my shot, but that's okay. You
- 1:41S4: got to. You know, when you're in the boxing ring,
- 1:44S4: you don't you don't talk about how much the opponent
- 1:46S4: is going to beat you. You say, I'm here to win.
- 1:49S3: Ryan Reynolds could very well have taken the Chris Rock route.
- 1:52S3: And God, really, you're saying that to me. But no.
- 1:57S3: Very humble man, but also great investor. Bought a football
- 2:00S3: team in the UK. They got a fairy tale story
- 2:03S3: and we thought, Look, we need to get in this game.
- 2:06S3: So we bought a breezy trivia team. We might have
- 2:09S3: heard Hannah this week chatting to it and we rocked
- 2:11S3: up down to the West End Hotel this week, sharpened
- 2:15S3: the grey lads and we got down to business. Hannah,
- 2:21S3: the general manager, has just rocked up. Hannah, here is
- 2:24S3: your special t shirt. How are you feeling about tonight?
- 2:27S9: I'm feeling pumped. We've got our uniforms. We're good to
- 2:29S9: go there.
- 2:30S3: What was the team name?
- 2:30S9: Usually we change it all the time. So we're up
- 2:33S9: for a new one this week.
- 2:34S3: We could be the the West End Dyson for wontons.
- 2:37S9: That sounds great to me. I'm all for it.
- 2:40S3: I'll tell you what, Hannah. This is the most professional
- 2:42S3: pub trivia booklet I have ever received. Can you tell
- 2:44S3: us what we're looking at here?
- 2:46S9: So we are looking at the inquisitive trivia.
- 2:48S3: And where's the emphasis? Come on.
- 2:51S9: The inquisitive. There it is. Trivia answer booklet.
- 2:55S3: The rounds up picture books, science and nature, days and months.
- 2:59S3: How many music and potluck.
- 3:03S4: Does anyone feel particularly passionate about anything like that?
- 3:08S10: Do you reckon potluck is food like.
- 3:12S4: The guy with the long hair out here? I know
- 3:15S4: what you think potluck is about, mate.
- 3:19S3: Which month did Anthony Albanese assume office as Prime Minister
- 3:22S3: of Australia? If Dyson, for one, got this wrong? I
- 3:25S3: would be very disappointed. May. May 26th. Election Day. Oof!
- 3:32S3: Or in my case, on Election Day. What is your
- 3:37S3: team name here tonight?
- 3:39S11: Pack of shunts.
- 3:40S3: The pack of shunts. All right. I'm joining the pack
- 3:42S3: of shunts down here at the trivia night. I won't
- 3:45S3: look at your answer card, but how's it all going tonight?
- 3:47S3: I think it was a bit of a surprise to
- 3:49S3: the science round like that. Science round had some pretty
- 3:52S3: cheeky questions. Oh, we're getting to the six months in.
- 3:56S3: Here are the answers. Good luck. Pack of shunts. Good luck.
- 3:59S3: Thank you.
- 4:01S12: I think someone's last year did elbow. Oh, God.
- 4:03S3: I'm nervous.
- 4:04S12: Now. That was late May.
- 4:07S3: Yes. Dyson, for one. When was the winter solstice in Australia?
- 4:13S3: Northern Hemisphere. Summer solstice. It's in June. My birthday's on
- 4:16S3: the 22nd. Always shortest day of second.
- 4:19S12: Shortest day. Yeah, you know that.
- 4:20S3: Yeah. You should know where my birthday is, Matt. I really.
- 4:22S4: Should. It surprises me every time.
- 4:25S3: Okay. We've literally just hit the easiest round of all time.
- 4:28S3: How many rings are served? The Olympic Games symbol.
- 4:32S9: Hey.
- 4:33S13: Hello.
- 4:35S3: Well, you can joke around in your own time. We
- 4:37S3: run this team now.
- 4:40S12: Duty free show between 1947 at an airport in Denmark,
- 4:45S12: Ireland or the US.
- 4:48S3: Where did the world first duty free shop open?
- 4:50S9: In Denmark.
- 4:51S3: It's giving Denmark. Okay. The only Brit on the team
- 4:55S3: might have this one. What does Posh stand for? Posh.
- 4:59S3: Originally in ocean voyages.
- 5:02S10: Port out. Starboard home.
- 5:04S3: Port out. Stop at home.
- 5:06S10: The bank.
- 5:08S3: Take it to the bank. We haven't got the results yet.
- 5:11S3: It's pending. But how do we all think we went?
- 5:13S12: Killed it. Killed it.
- 5:15S3: Killed it. Do you reckon we came second?
- 5:17S12: Hey, can I.
- 5:18S4: Say, even though we may have come second. Many great
- 5:22S4: people have come second.
- 5:24S3: That's true.
- 5:25S12: Okay.
- 5:26S3: Your partner. Come on, Denmark. Come on. Islands. It was
- 5:35S3: giving us his the acronym for Posh. What is it for?
- 5:40S3: That stuff. We got it. We got it. Thank you
- 5:43S3: very much for hosting tonight. What was your name? Sorry. Brad. Brad,
- 5:46S3: Thank you very much. So we were dicing for one
- 5:48S3: and it sounds like we came third.
- 5:49S12: Yes, that is correct.
- 5:50S3: Out of how many.
- 5:51S12: Teams out of seven?
- 5:53S3: Yes. But let's be honest. If a table of 15
- 5:57S3: can't win a trivia night.
- 5:59S4: It's very embarrassing. We're going to find the fire exits
- 6:01S4: to this place and leave quietly.
- 6:04S9: You guys wanted a sports team and we gave you one.
- 6:12S3: And now it's time for my.
- 6:17S4: Yes, that's right. This is the segment in which I
- 6:19S4: attempt to blow you, Alex Tyson's mind and also you
- 6:23S4: listening with a fact that I have learned across the
- 6:26S4: last seven days.
- 6:28S3: Now, you've been reading some science journals this week. You've
- 6:31S3: been in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. What's been what's been your
- 6:34S3: weapon of choice when it comes to arming your mind
- 6:37S3: with facts? Matthew.
- 6:41S4: The DMS. Now, they have not usually appeared in.
- 6:48S14: You know.
- 6:49S4: Bound in leather and in your friend's parents living room
- 6:54S4: on their bookshelf.
- 6:55S3: I'll tell you what, I've got a few DMS from
- 6:57S3: some people bound in leather, if you know what I mean.
- 7:00S4: So this comes from Bronwyn Zak. Oh.
- 7:05S3: Producer Bronze blowing minds today.
- 7:08S4: Now, this is a multi-layered fact because it's about a
- 7:12S4: specific type of lollipop.
- 7:15S3: Now how did you come across Lollipop facts? What's happening?
- 7:20S15: It was on TikTok. And then also I've not done
- 7:23S15: any further research to this, so I. I just sent
- 7:27S15: Matt a screenshot of something I saw. It was like,
- 7:30S15: here's something.
- 7:31S4: Maybe it is pretty it was pretty mind blowing. Did you.
- 7:34S3: Verify?
- 7:35S4: I did some research. I always do my research.
- 7:38S3: Just making sure. Just making sure.
- 7:39S4: Okay. So now this is about lollipops, which I think
- 7:43S4: I was quite amazed by.
- 7:45S3: So we've got stand up comedy about mind blowing lollipops.
- 7:49S4: Now the modern lollipop. Is, they say, according to Wikipedia,
- 7:54S4: still something of a mystery. But a number of companies.
- 7:58S3: Puppies A is a mystery.
- 8:00S4: Well, they say that a number of companies have laid
- 8:03S4: claim to it. But according to a book Food for Thought,
- 8:05S4: Extraordinary Life Chronicles of the World, Lollipops were apparently invented
- 8:09S4: by George Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, who started making
- 8:12S4: large hard candies mounted on sticks in 1908. He named
- 8:17S4: them after a racehorse of the time Lollipop. And trademarked
- 8:23S4: the lollipop name in 1931, which I found.
- 8:26S3: Lollipop was named after a horse.
- 8:29S4: Yes. Okay. So this is why I find it a
- 8:31S4: little bit interesting because especially in 1900, like I would
- 8:33S4: think that they would date way back then. So there
- 8:35S4: are pops. There are there is history of boiled candies
- 8:39S4: on sticks or handles because.
- 8:41S3: People have been putting stuff on sticks for millennia. Yeah, well,
- 8:45S3: it's like the shish kebab make.
- 8:47S4: Love me a kebab. Bit of a tinga the old
- 8:51S4: Ghanaian suya. So. So Nigerian beans. So yeah. Anyways, anyway, look,
- 8:58S4: I found it quite interesting, okay? To think that this
- 9:00S4: person has claimed to have made the lollipop of the
- 9:03S4: lollipop 1908. But what I did not know, okay, like.
- 9:07S3: The lollipop was very close to being invented along the
- 9:10S3: same time as the aeroplane. Like only, what, a couple
- 9:12S3: of years before?
- 9:14S4: Yeah, right. Like it's. Yeah.
- 9:15S3: It's like two very different inventions. One, I'd say you'd
- 9:20S3: hope we could have come up with quite a bit earlier.
- 9:24S4: Okay.
- 9:25S3: Lolly on a.
- 9:25S4: Stick. What I didn't know is that Chapa Chups.
- 9:29S3: Very famous.
- 9:29S4: Very famous company is actually a Spanish company right now.
- 9:36S3: Spanish for something?
- 9:37S4: Yes. Chopper chop. Yeah. Okay, so chopper chop. Apparently, the
- 9:41S4: chopper is a short word. Well, the name of the
- 9:47S4: brand comes from the Spanish verb Chupa. Meaning to lick.
- 9:54S4: That's what the. That's what it says here. Okay. Yeah.
- 9:58S3: So, Chapa. And then what's the chopper?
- 10:00S4: Well, chipper. Chipper. I'm guessing it's a two lick lick.
- 10:04S3: That's it. Chop and chop. Literally made licky lick.
- 10:08S4: I guess so.
- 10:09S3: Because if so, that's gross.
- 10:12S4: So the thing that was was mind blowing is that,
- 10:16S4: you know, we all know the Chapa Chup logo, the.
- 10:19S3: Little like curly riding.
- 10:20S4: Yeah, curly riding on the yellow flower kind of thing. Yeah,
- 10:24S4: that was designed. In 1969 by the surrealist artist Salvador Dali.
- 10:32S3: What?
- 10:33S4: Yeah.
- 10:33S3: Salvador Dali?
- 10:35S4: Yeah.
- 10:37S3: Originally did the chop chop logo. Yeah, bro, that guy
- 10:41S3: sold out. I mean, he used to be all about
- 10:45S3: melting watches. You know, it was about the art, man. Yeah.
- 10:48S3: Why is he going designing logos for companies now?
- 10:52S4: What? I didn't know. Maybe you had a little boiled
- 10:55S4: candy at the back of his paintbrush. You know, Little
- 10:57S4: Licky lick. Yeah. Little Ricki Lake while he's painting the paint.
- 10:59S3: Did you record as part of the deal to get
- 11:03S3: Salvador Dali to do this lollipop thing? They invented a
- 11:08S3: stick that could also be a paintbrush. Paintbrush. So that
- 11:10S3: while brush pop.
- 11:12S4: Is that not a good idea? I'm not saying that
- 11:14S4: they did that, but I think it would. They should have.
- 11:17S3: Well, some people paint with their mouth. And it would
- 11:20S3: be easier to, like, hold the paintbrush in your mouth
- 11:22S3: if there was a boiled lolly on the end of it.
- 11:25S4: You'd certainly get your reward, wouldn't you?
- 11:27S3: Absolutely.
- 11:28S4: So I think that was pretty interesting stuff.
- 11:30S3: Well, that's good. My mind is blown that Salvador Dali
- 11:34S3: was a capitalist hack. I did not. I did not realize. Oink, oink! Salvador. Oink, oink.
- 11:44S4: It makes me feel better, you know, someone like him
- 11:47S4: can advertise chopper tops and world's roasters. I mean, the
- 11:50S4: three McDonald's coffee campaigns I've done, mate.
- 11:53S3: I reckon you know this Brixton. I reckon Salvador Dali,
- 11:57S3: sponsored by Big Mustache. I reckon there was a mustache
- 11:59S3: wax company that was the one that got him to
- 12:02S3: do his famous Mot.
- 12:03S4: Well, he probably. Well, no, he probably just didn't want
- 12:05S4: to get any hard candy in his in his tache.
- 12:08S4: Needed a stick to guide it into the mush a
- 12:10S4: bit better.
- 12:11S3: All right. Anyway, we also love you blowing our minds
- 12:13S3: here at Mountain Alex. All day breakfast. I send us
- 12:15S3: a voice memo of a fact that you thought was
- 12:17S3: incredibly unbelievable. Through to our DMS, Matt and Alex.
- 12:22S9: I always thought the song Closing Time by Semi Sonic
- 12:25S9: was about the pub closing. It was always the last
- 12:28S9: song that my local played before they kicked us out.
- 12:30S9: But listening to a podcast today, they shared that the
- 12:33S9: song is not about being bounced from the pub, but
- 12:36S9: about being bounced on the womb as his wife just
- 12:39S9: gave birth to a premature baby. He did write it
- 12:42S9: to have a double meaning but ended up hiding it
- 12:44S9: so well that no one ever knew it was actually
- 12:46S9: about birth. So make sure you listen to it now
- 12:49S9: with the new meaning in mind. And it's quite funny.
- 12:51S3: Yes.
- 12:52S4: Did you know I.
- 12:53S3: Heard the same podcast and it blew my mind? Seriously,
- 12:58S3: do you do you look at it?
- 12:59S4: So this song's released in 1998, Closing time, Open all
- 13:03S4: the doors and let you out into the world. Closing time,
- 13:05S4: turning all the lights on over every boy and every girl.
- 13:08S3: Yeah. And this used to be at college every at
- 13:11S3: the end of the pub all the time. But yeah,
- 13:13S3: I think it's a song Exploder episode. It's a song exploder.
- 13:16S4: I know who I want to take home. I know
- 13:17S4: who I want to take home. I know who I
- 13:20S4: want to take me home. I know who I want
- 13:21S4: to take me home.
- 13:22S3: I think one of them is like, time for you
- 13:24S3: to go home to the places that you will be from.
- 13:29S3: You get born somewhere. You're from there. How cool is that?
- 13:33S4: Although it's outside. So gather up your jackets. Move it
- 13:35S4: to the exits.
- 13:36S3: There's also finish your whiskey or beer, which I don't
- 13:38S3: think is happening in the womb, but double meanings.
- 13:41S4: All right. Well, thank you very much.
- 13:42S3: For maybe the drink he's thinking of is a rum
- 13:45S3: biblical chord. Maybe that's maybe that's the drink that a
- 13:52S3: baby would be having at the Womb pub.
- 13:59S4: I wish my silence was that of disapproval, but I'm
- 14:02S4: actually trying to think of other puns. I honestly couldn't
- 14:08S4: think of anything.
- 14:09S16: Yeah.
- 14:10S3: How about we just leave it there? I mean, you
- 14:12S3: can't top perfection, Matt, so why bother?
- 14:19S4: I don't know. I'm just trying to. All I can
- 14:24S4: get is.
- 14:25S3: You're killing me. All radio executives tell people like us
- 14:31S3: on the mics. Say something funny. Finish on a laugh. Okay.
- 14:34S3: I said an excellent joke, and we finish on awkward silence.
- 14:39S3: You've got to come with.
- 14:41S4: Me, man. I'm just trying to think all I can
- 14:43S4: think of birth standing like smirnoff's not. So I'm like,
- 14:49S4: I'm like, can I weave that into some. Rumpelstiltskin like
- 14:54S4: joke gold out of it. All right. Thank you very
- 14:56S4: much for keeping in touch with us at mat.nz. Alex,
- 14:58S4: as we always love hearing your DMS.
- 15:00S3: I know two unborn babies. Favourite champagne is.
- 15:05S17: Mum.
- 15:11S4: I don't know if we can even talk. Now that
- 15:12S4: I think about it. Babies and alcohol.
- 15:15S3: No, please do not drink while pregnant.
- 15:17S13: Guys.
- 15:18S15: Bubbly.
- 15:21UU: Oh, okay. You surprise.
- 15:24S12: You knocking.
- 15:26S3: Them out of the park. Good work, Bron. Drink responsibly. Not. Well, Matt,
- 15:47S3: you changed the game recently by getting a couple of
- 15:50S3: lads together and going off on a puppy shower weekend.
- 15:55S3: Some would contend it changed the game to a place
- 15:57S3: that no one should be.
- 16:00S4: A game that no one wants to play. A very
- 16:02S4: dangerous game. I have to say, if you enjoy your relationship.
- 16:08S3: Pappy shower being dads pre birth of their child go
- 16:12S3: off and you know talk to other dads hang out
- 16:14S3: with other men in this sort of way but I've
- 16:19S3: heard of a new a new one.
- 16:22S4: Okay. What's another excuse for me to.
- 16:24S3: Because I guess that was a baby shower. Yeah. Then
- 16:28S3: the pappy shower was a couple of puppies hanging out.
- 16:30S14: Yeah.
- 16:31S3: Well, I had a friend who recently attended their very
- 16:34S3: first not baby shower, but baby shower, boobie shower, boobie shower.
- 16:40S3: Their friend getting breast implants. Oh, And so I had
- 16:44S3: a party to celebrate the incoming members of the family.
- 16:49S4: Wait, wait, wait, wait. So were the were the. Was
- 16:52S4: the party before or after the implants?
- 16:54S3: Before the implants. Pre implants.
- 16:56S4: What? So it's like a sayonara.
- 16:58S3: Sayonara to. Well, no, it's not, because it's like a
- 17:02S3: baby shower is we're about to welcome, I guess, a
- 17:05S3: new addition. And I guess it's the same concept. But
- 17:07S3: for boobies.
- 17:08S4: Was it just girls that were invited?
- 17:10S3: All the girls came along. They had, you know, appropriate food,
- 17:13S3: cupcakes and those kind of things. All right. Games were played,
- 17:18S3: which was. Are you serious?
- 17:19S4: Did this actually happen? Yeah, it's actually happened, actually. A
- 17:22S4: baby shower.
- 17:23S3: A baby shower.
- 17:24S4: Like I mean.
- 17:26S3: I'm not going to give you the names of a dress, mate.
- 17:29S3: What more information do you want? The girls went round.
- 17:32S3: They had a baby shower.
- 17:35S4: So I just never heard of this before.
- 17:38S3: Well, I'm not sure how common it is if, you know,
- 17:42S3: celebrating the incoming boobies, which I did here, apparently last
- 17:46S3: about ten years. Yeah. Cost about $15,000 in some cases.
- 17:51S14: Yeah.
- 17:52S3: Which is about 1500 a year. But my friend who's
- 17:55S3: not getting the baby shower, who was just attending the
- 17:56S3: baby shower, made the good point as well. It's like, yeah,
- 17:58S3: the boobs, the surgery, all that sort of stuff. That's expensive.
- 18:02S3: What about the new clothes you gonna have to buy?
- 18:04S4: I didn't even think about clothes. Didn't think about the
- 18:05S4: new swimwear.
