- 0:38Speaker 3: Hey, guys, welcome to the show. I have a special
- 0:40Speaker 3: guest today, Denny Burke. He's been on the show before,
- 0:44Speaker 3: and we're gonna be talking about a viral video that's
- 0:48Speaker 3: going around from the Joe Rogan podcast podcast and his
- 0:53Speaker 3: Joe Rogan's guest is this guy named James Tallerico who
- 0:58Speaker 3: is a Texas Democrat, a US Senate candidate, and in
- 1:02Speaker 3: this viral video, he claims that the Bible is pro choice.
- 1:08Speaker 3: It's so insane. And the reason I'm having Denny Burke
- 1:11Speaker 3: on is because he responded to the video with a
- 1:15Speaker 3: very long tweet and he also wrote an article about
- 1:18Speaker 3: this guy in World magazine I think last summer. So
- 1:24Speaker 3: if you don't remember Denny Burke.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He is.
- 1:26Speaker 3: He serves as a professor of Biblical studies at the
- 1:29Speaker 3: Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and as the president of the
- 1:33Speaker 3: Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. He also serves as
- 1:37Speaker 3: one of the teaching pastors at Kenwood Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
- 1:42Speaker 3: And he's written many books. But first award from our sponsor,
- 1:47Speaker 3: please welcome Denny Burke.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Hey, thanks for having me.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:50Speaker 4: I'm glad to be here.
- 1:51Speaker 3: I'm glad you could do this at the last minute.
- 1:55Speaker 3: This is a crazy clip I saw. I think I
- 1:59Speaker 3: saw it yesterday and then I saw it again today
- 2:01Speaker 3: and I was like, Okay, I have to talk about
- 2:03Speaker 3: this because this is this is too much. So I'm
- 2:07Speaker 3: gonna just show the clip first and let's watch this
- 2:10Speaker 3: and then we can respond.
- 2:12Speaker 1: But I say all this in terms of in context
- 2:14Speaker 1: of abortion, because before God comes over Mary and we
- 2:21Speaker 1: have the incarnation, God asks for Mary's consent, which is remarkable.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I mean, go back and read this in in Luke.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I mean, the Angel comes down and asks Mary if
- 2:36Speaker 1: this is something she wants to do, and she says,
- 2:39Speaker 1: if it is God's will, let it be done, let
- 2:41Speaker 1: it be let it happen. So to me, that is
- 2:43Speaker 1: an affirmation in one of our most central stories that
- 2:47Speaker 1: creation has to be done with consent. You cannot force
- 2:51Speaker 1: someone to create. Creation is one of the most sacred
- 2:53Speaker 1: acts that that we engage in as human beings. But
- 2:57Speaker 1: that has to be done with consent, It has to
- 2:59Speaker 1: be done with free them. And and to me, that
- 3:02Speaker 1: is absolutely consistent with the ministry and life and death
- 3:06Speaker 1: of Jesus. And so that's why I that's how I
- 3:09Speaker 1: come down on that side of the issue.
- 3:12Speaker 3: So that's pretty wild.
- 3:15Speaker 4: My first unbelievable.
- 3:17Speaker 3: My first thought when I when I heard that was
- 3:22Speaker 3: I thought of Romans one. Of course, in the verse
- 3:25Speaker 3: twenty one, for although they knew God, they did not
- 3:27Speaker 3: honor him as God or give thanks to him. But
- 3:30Speaker 3: they became futile and they're thinking, and their foolish.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Hearts were dark and.
- 3:36Speaker 3: So talk up because you you you posted a long
- 3:40Speaker 3: tweet about this video. What is your reaction to this
- 3:44Speaker 3: video this clip.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Well, the first verse that came to my mind was
- 3:49Speaker 4: Luke one. I mean, the way he's describing Luke one.
- 3:54Speaker 4: You're thinking, we read this. This is something that everybody knows,
- 3:58Speaker 4: at least because it's a Christmas you know. I mean,
- 4:01Speaker 4: this is one of the most familiar passages in the Bible,
- 4:04Speaker 4: all you have to do is look at Luke one
- 4:06Speaker 4: and you're like, that's not what's going on there at all.
- 4:09Speaker 4: That is not how the conversation went.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yeah, let me just let me just pause and let
- 4:14Speaker 3: me just show. Let me just tell you what the
- 4:15Speaker 3: conversation is. So Gabriel, the angel Gabriel comes to Mary
- 4:20Speaker 3: and he says, uh. He says, do not be afraid, Mary,
- 4:24Speaker 3: for you have found favor with God. And behold, you
- 4:27Speaker 3: will conceive in your womb embarrass son, and you shall
- 4:30Speaker 3: call his name Jesus. And then later Mary says to
- 4:34Speaker 3: the angel, how will this be since I'm a virgin,
- 4:38Speaker 3: And the Angel answered her, the Holy Spirit will come
- 4:41Speaker 3: to you, come upon you, and the power of the
- 4:43Speaker 3: Most Hie will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be
- 4:47Speaker 3: born will be called Holy, the Son of God. And
- 4:51Speaker 3: Mary said, quote, behold, I am the servant of the Lord.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Let it be according to your word.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yeah, and so listen the just Mary says two things
- 5:04Speaker 4: in this conversation, and God speaks the rest of the
- 5:06Speaker 4: time through the angel, and God makes an announcement to her.
- 5:10Speaker 4: There's no handwringing or should we do this, Mary, Come on,
- 5:15Speaker 4: I mean, there's not a negotiation here. This is an
- 5:17Speaker 4: announcement from the Lord. And of course Mary consents to it.
- 5:21Speaker 4: If she hadn't consented to it, she'd be sinning. But
- 5:24Speaker 4: it wasn't God asking her. It was an announcement in
- 5:27Speaker 4: her saying two things, how's this going to happen? And
- 5:30Speaker 4: he explains it's going to be a miracle through the
- 5:32Speaker 4: Holy Spirit. And then she says, and literally, the term
- 5:37Speaker 4: there is bond, slave or slave. She uses the word slave.
- 5:42Speaker 4: She's not speaking yeah, she's using the term for a slave.
- 5:46Speaker 4: She's not using the term for somebody who exerts their
- 5:49Speaker 4: willful opinion in the face of a sovereign God. So
- 5:53Speaker 4: that's not what's going on here at all. So I
- 5:56Speaker 4: think one of the most troubling things about what tall
- 5:58Speaker 4: Rico is doing there is it's a classic false teacher move,
- 6:01Speaker 4: which is not that you ignore the word of God,
- 6:05Speaker 4: but you take it and you twist it, you turn
- 6:10Speaker 4: it a little bit so that it's not saying what
- 6:13Speaker 4: it means anymore, but it's saying what you're trying to
- 6:15Speaker 4: manipulate it to mean. And I think that's what he's
- 6:18Speaker 4: doing here with the scripture. He's just playing fast and
- 6:21Speaker 4: loose with what the Bible says. It's not what the
- 6:24Speaker 4: Bible teaches. And he's trying to make this comment about consent,
- 6:30Speaker 4: which if ever there was like a modern concern, like
- 6:35Speaker 4: a contemporary concern being unhelpfully foisted upon the scripture, it
- 6:40Speaker 4: would be this idea of consent. Like today, when people
- 6:44Speaker 4: are talking about sexual morality, the only thing they know
- 6:47Speaker 4: is consent, like don't hurt anybody and make sure that
- 6:50Speaker 4: everybody agrees that it's okay. Those are the only two rules.
- 6:55Speaker 4: That is not the way the Bible talks about these things,
- 6:57Speaker 4: as if consent is your bottom line ethical deliberation, and
- 7:01Speaker 4: then once you have that everything was That's not what
- 7:04Speaker 4: the you're That is an iogetical reading into the text,
- 7:08Speaker 4: not a reading out of the text, uh, the message
- 7:11Speaker 4: of the text. And he's what he's doing is he's
- 7:14Speaker 4: just taking his his scruples about consent and then foisting
- 7:18Speaker 4: them onto this conversation between Mary and God. That's a
- 7:21Speaker 4: complete distortion.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't the Bible doesn't record a conversation between
- 7:26Speaker 3: Mary and Joseph about, you know, should we keep this
- 7:28Speaker 3: kid or not? I mean, no, so absurd.
- 7:34Speaker 4: And also the thing that's so ironic about this is
- 7:37Speaker 4: he's using that story which he's reading consent into this like,
- 7:42Speaker 4: I'm going to bear the Son of God and it
- 7:44Speaker 4: all happens because she consents to it. Forget about God's
- 7:48Speaker 4: sovereign plan from before the foundation of the world, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 4: Acts one says, the predetermined plan and fore knowledge of God.
- 7:53Speaker 4: This is all happening. Forget about all that. This is
- 7:56Speaker 4: just it's all coming down to that one moment. But
- 7:58Speaker 4: he's using all of that to say, well, just as
- 8:01Speaker 4: Mary had to consent to be pregnant, she had to
- 8:05Speaker 4: allow God to do this. So it is now women
- 8:08Speaker 4: have to consent to be pregnant after they're already pregnant,
- 8:12Speaker 4: and if they don't give their consent, they can abort,
- 8:14Speaker 4: which the implication of that would be, well, you know
- 8:18Speaker 4: the child that you're carrying within you, Mary, I guess
- 8:20Speaker 4: you can abort if you don't consent, which would mean
- 8:23Speaker 4: would mean that Mary would on this reading, Mary would
- 8:27Speaker 4: have had the right to abort the son of God,
- 8:30Speaker 4: to kill the Son of God in the womb. And
- 8:33Speaker 4: the ultimate irony here, though, is it's Luke's gospel, this
- 8:38Speaker 4: very gospel that records the whole interaction between Mary and
- 8:43Speaker 4: Elizabeth and when Mary Mary goes to visit Elizabeth when
- 8:49Speaker 4: they're both pregnant. Elizabeth is pregnant with John the Baptist
- 8:53Speaker 4: who's going to be the forerunner of the Christ and
- 8:54Speaker 4: announce Christ. And when Mary walks into pregnant Elizabeth's house,
- 9:00Speaker 4: it says, the baby inside of Elizabeth leaps for joy,
- 9:05Speaker 4: like the being inside of her is leaping for joy
- 9:09Speaker 4: because the woman carrying the Messiah just walked in. This
- 9:14Speaker 4: is one of the few places in scripture that it's
- 9:17Speaker 4: so clearly speaking of the personality of the unborn that
- 9:21Speaker 4: there's an emotional response to the Messiah coming in into
- 9:25Speaker 4: the room. And that's like totally lost on him. He's like, No,
- 9:28Speaker 4: if Mary or even Elizabeth, I guess if they wanted
- 9:32Speaker 4: to endo their pregnancies, they could have just done it
- 9:34Speaker 4: right then.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and then you mentioned in your tweet about Adam's
- 9:40Speaker 3: first breath. Talk about that for a second.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yeah, so a part of a part of his interview.
- 9:47Speaker 4: By the way, your listeners should know, this is kind
- 9:48Speaker 4: of going around today. But this interview I believe is
- 9:50Speaker 4: from last summer on Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan is sitting
- 9:53Speaker 4: there enthralled, and he was asking Joe Rogan was asking
- 9:57Speaker 4: him why it is as a Christian he would be
- 10:00Speaker 4: supportive of abortion rights.
- 10:02Speaker 3: And he's a pastor as well, right.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Or no, Yeah, he's training to be a pastor. I
- 10:07Speaker 4: think it's at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary down in Austin, Texas.
- 10:12Speaker 4: So he's simultaneously a politician and training to be a pastor.
- 10:16Speaker 4: But he's arguing it's really an old pro choice view.
- 10:20Speaker 4: You don't hear that much anymore, but this idea that
- 10:23Speaker 4: Adam wasn't a person until he God breathed the breath
- 10:27Speaker 4: of life into him. Therefore, unborn babies shouldn't be treated
- 10:32Speaker 4: as people until they take their first breath. That was
- 10:36Speaker 4: the old logic that people used to you. You don't
- 10:39Speaker 4: hear that as much anymore because it's it's transparently crazy
- 10:44Speaker 4: now because people we can see so much of the babies,
- 10:47Speaker 4: babies in the womb, we hear their heartbeats, and just
- 10:49Speaker 4: because they're not breathing, we can recognize that doesn't mean
- 10:52Speaker 4: we can't recognize their personhood. I mean, even people who
- 10:55Speaker 4: aren't super pro life recognized that in the late stages
- 10:59Speaker 4: of prejudice pregnancy that looks like a person in there.
- 11:02Speaker 4: And that's why you have even amongst people who are
- 11:04Speaker 4: otherwise pro choice, they're kind of skittish about you know,
- 11:08Speaker 4: late term abortions. So but the idea that the person's
- 11:11Speaker 4: not a person because they haven't taken their first breath
- 11:13Speaker 4: yet is not a legitimate implication of what was going
- 11:17Speaker 4: on with the special creation of Adam. That's a that's
- 11:20Speaker 4: also you know, kind of iogetically right into the thing. Yeah,
- 11:24Speaker 4: so it's another distortion of that scripture to you know,
- 11:28Speaker 4: sort of support some kind of a modern, unbiblical agenda.
- 11:32Speaker 3: We'll be right back after this short break. Yeah, and
- 11:36Speaker 3: you you say in your tweet, you say it's a
- 11:40Speaker 3: pro choice quote bodily autonomy end quote argument speciously imposed
- 11:47Speaker 3: upon the text of scripture. So it's you know, it's
- 11:53Speaker 3: it's just, you know, it's absurd, like as very you know,
- 11:59Speaker 3: Mary being a pro choice, pro abortion kind of woman
- 12:04Speaker 3: and a strong independent woman, the idea is just absurd
- 12:08Speaker 3: on its face.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Listen, I just want to come in to listeners. Let's
- 12:14Speaker 4: take our let's look at the real Mary and can
- 12:18Speaker 4: you imagine hearing what she heard. Her actual response was
- 12:21Speaker 4: not some negotiation about whether she would allow God to
- 12:24Speaker 4: do his plan. The actual conversation was, I don't know
- 12:28Speaker 4: how this is going to happen, but behold the bond,
- 12:30Speaker 4: slave of the Lord. Whatever you say is what I'm
- 12:33Speaker 4: going to do. There's nothing of this consent thing here
- 12:38Speaker 4: that they're reading into it. It was all he is
- 12:41Speaker 4: my Lord, and I'm going to do what he says.
- 12:43Speaker 4: That that is all what it's about. But it wasn't
- 12:45Speaker 4: God asking permission. Yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 3: And then and then Mary immediately after this, after she
- 12:51Speaker 3: visits visits, Elizabeth sings a song of praise the Magnificat.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So this is a joyous occasion for her. Yeah, it's
- 13:01Speaker 3: not something as you said, She's not like wringing your
- 13:04Speaker 3: hands over this situation.
- 13:05Speaker 4: No, and she sees it is fulfillment of the Old
- 13:09Speaker 4: Testament promise. In other words, this is a plan that
- 13:12Speaker 4: predated her even being alive, and she's totally entered into
- 13:16Speaker 4: that and accepted it. Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 3: And at the end of your tweet, you say that
- 13:24Speaker 3: if tell Rico's vision for life, marriage, and family were enacted,
- 13:29Speaker 3: it would bring misery to countless Americans and death to
- 13:32Speaker 3: the unborn those destructive consequences are not mitigated by the
- 13:37Speaker 3: affability of the messenger, and voters need to be clear
- 13:41Speaker 3: eyed about what is at stake.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Yeah, And for me, what animates me about this is
- 13:46Speaker 4: that he's saying all of this in the name of Jesus.
- 13:50Speaker 4: He is saying that as a Christian, this is what
- 13:53Speaker 4: the true understanding of what the Bible teaches, the true
- 13:56Speaker 4: understanding of the Christian faith leads you to saying and
- 14:00Speaker 4: kill children in Uterow. He's saying that that's what the
- 14:04Speaker 4: Bible teaches. And the thing that's you know, concerning about him,
- 14:08Speaker 4: he's so nice. He's very articulate. He's very compelling in
- 14:14Speaker 4: a lot of ways. I think he would make you think, Oh,
- 14:16Speaker 4: he kind of sounds like a pastor. He kind of
- 14:18Speaker 4: sounds like a guy that I should listen to. He
- 14:20Speaker 4: seems to know the Bible and a lot. You can't
- 14:23Speaker 4: see it in the video that the clips that you're showing,
- 14:26Speaker 4: but if you watch the whole conversation with Rogan, it
- 14:29Speaker 4: took about two and a half hours. Rogan is completely
- 14:32Speaker 4: dazzled by this guy. I know, the same guy, the
- 14:35Speaker 4: same guy that was Rogan was dazzled by Wesley Huff.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Remember that it was an awesome conversation. Wesley went on
- 14:41Speaker 4: there and reached the real gospel and for two and
- 14:43Speaker 4: a half hours just defended the faith. And Rogan was
- 14:46Speaker 4: dazzled by him, which was encouraging to a lot of us.
- 14:48Speaker 4: But then you got this guy rolling in and he's
- 14:51Speaker 4: completely distorting the faith, and Rogan is just as dazzled,
- 14:55Speaker 4: and he's telling him by the end of it, you
- 14:57Speaker 4: need to run for president. You know, He's That's what
- 15:01Speaker 4: Rogan was telling him. By the end of it. I
- 15:03Speaker 4: think this guy is a is a false teacher. Rogan
- 15:07Speaker 4: thinks that he's given that, you know, the correct merging
- 15:11Speaker 4: of Christianity and policy public policy, but he hasn't done that.
- 15:15Speaker 4: And so I get exercised when people are falsely representing
- 15:19Speaker 4: the Christian faith and the way that Tall Rico is
- 15:22Speaker 4: and it's just straight up theological liberalism, That's what it is.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Yeah, And before we get to more of his theological liberalism,
- 15:32Speaker 3: I just want to to mention again I've talked about
- 15:35Speaker 3: this before, but when I was before I was a Christian,
- 15:38Speaker 3: I was pro choice, and I wasn't I.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Wasn't like.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Art, I wasn't maniacally pro choice. I just it was
- 15:48Speaker 3: just in the water. It was all my friends are
- 15:50Speaker 3: pro choice. I was pro choice. I remember being offended
- 15:54Speaker 3: when my mother called and said my sister was attending
- 15:57Speaker 3: a pro life rally in Dallas. I remember telling my mom,
- 16:02Speaker 3: you know, mom, this is ridiculous, like women should should
- 16:06Speaker 3: be able to choose. And and I've talked about this
- 16:11Speaker 3: so many times. But the day I got saved, the
- 16:14Speaker 3: day that God opened the eyes of my heart and
- 16:19Speaker 3: I understood. I mean, I think it was that same
- 16:22Speaker 3: very day, and I understood the imago day. I instantly
- 16:27Speaker 3: became pro life, Like immediately, it was such a like
- 16:31Speaker 3: black and white. And what's what's disturbing to me about
- 16:36Speaker 3: this is I did a video. This was like, I
- 16:42Speaker 3: don't know, four years ago, I did a video on
- 16:44Speaker 3: an episode where and I just kind of casually mentioned
- 16:49Speaker 3: that you can't be a Christian and be pro choice.
- 16:53Speaker 4: And what's crazy is I.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Got so much blowback from women in my church, several
- 17:01Speaker 3: several women in my church that were like friends of mine.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I got blowback from them, and I was like, wait, what,
- 17:07Speaker 3: I didn't even know this was controversial.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Yeah, it shouldn't be. I mean, there's a certain point.
- 17:13Speaker 4: I mean, let's be honest. I mean, if you're a
- 17:16Speaker 4: new Christian, there can be a period of naivity. I
- 17:18Speaker 4: mean my own story, you know, I was converted when
- 17:21Speaker 4: I was nine. But my second year in college, I
- 17:24Speaker 4: had this real dazzling political science teacher and he introduced
- 17:30Speaker 4: to me the topic of single issue voting and how
- 17:33Speaker 4: benighted that was. And I thought, hm, you know, And
- 17:37Speaker 4: so I came home during the semester to my parents
- 17:39Speaker 4: and at the dinner table, introduced to them this newfound
- 17:42Speaker 4: wisdom i'd had. You know, Mom and Dad, maybe we
- 17:44Speaker 4: shouldn't be single issue voters when it comes to abortion
- 17:48Speaker 4: and whether or not you're going to vote for Clinton
- 17:50Speaker 4: or Bush. And you know, forks are dropping on the plates,
- 17:55Speaker 4: you know, And that's when I learned that we'll wait
- 17:59Speaker 4: a minute, wait single as you this is important, Like
- 18:04Speaker 4: this is so fundamental the protection of human life that yeah,
- 18:08Speaker 4: if you get everything else right, but get this wrong.
- 18:11Speaker 4: It's not like one issue qualifies somebody for your vote,
- 18:14Speaker 4: but God gone at one issue can disqualify somebody from
- 18:18Speaker 4: your vote. Because this is so fundamental and if you
- 18:21Speaker 4: get this wrong, it doesn't matter how right you are
- 18:23Speaker 4: about everything else. And so I learned that, you know,
- 18:27Speaker 4: just even in college. But you know, you figure that
- 18:29Speaker 4: out at some point. In other words, you're you're laboring
- 18:34Speaker 4: in some sort of you're either the baby as the
- 18:38Speaker 4: baby Christians or else you're resisting the word of God
- 18:41Speaker 4: because this is so plain in scripture that thou shalt
- 18:46Speaker 4: not kill. And the being that's inside of the womb,
- 18:49Speaker 4: that's a human being created in the image of God,
- 18:51Speaker 4: and you just you can't take that life. It's an
- 18:54Speaker 4: unjust killing. Yeah.
- 18:56Speaker 3: And I just thought when you mentioned your family and
- 18:59Speaker 3: the forest drop, I just remembered my dad. My dad
- 19:02Speaker 3: knew I was pro choice, and I just feel now
- 19:04Speaker 3: I'm just like, oh gosh, Like what I put my
- 19:07Speaker 3: parents through.
- 19:07Speaker 4: I can't. Yeah, I might put them through. It's ridiculous.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Your World magazine piece that came this was came out
- 19:18Speaker 3: in what July of Lust of last year?
- 19:22Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it was last summer.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Uh.
- 19:25Speaker 3: It's called a well we'll link to it below, but
- 19:27Speaker 3: it's called a gifted manipulator. And you talk about, uh,
- 19:31Speaker 3: this guy James tellerco on Joe Rogan, and not only
- 19:36Speaker 3: is he does he claim the Bible is uh pro choice.
- 19:42Speaker 3: But he also he said, you say he affirms gay
- 19:47Speaker 3: marriage and lgbt Q rights, and uh and he he says, quote,
- 19:55Speaker 3: we have four gospels with tons of teachings from Jesus,
- 19:58Speaker 3: and none of them are about homosexuality.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Yeah, that's another old liberal saw, which is it's the
- 20:08Speaker 4: whole red letter Christian thing, right, So Jesus never mentioned
- 20:12Speaker 4: homosexuality explicitly. Therefore people can get gay married and homosexual
- 20:19Speaker 4: behavior is okay. I mean, we've all heard this before.
- 20:22Speaker 4: The distortion in it, though, and what your listeners need
- 20:28Speaker 4: to consider here is is that that is not representing
- 20:32Speaker 4: Jesus faithfully. I mean Jesus said in Matthew nineteen he
- 20:36Speaker 4: was asked a question about divorce, but he gave an
- 20:38Speaker 4: answer that tells about the nature of marriage. And he says,
- 20:42Speaker 4: have you not read that in the beginning God made
- 20:45Speaker 4: them male and female, and the two shall become one flesh.
- 20:49Speaker 4: And he's basically defining marriage there as the union of
- 20:54Speaker 4: one man and one woman. That is the norm, and
- 20:58Speaker 4: any departure from that, or any seven of that covenant
- 21:01Speaker 4: in that context would be a sin. It would be wrong.
- 21:05Speaker 4: So Jesus defines the nature of the marriage Covenant. There
- 21:09Speaker 4: also elsewhere Jesus talks about fornication being a sin. Now,
- 21:14Speaker 4: fornication is is just the catch all term in the Bible.
- 21:18Speaker 4: It comes from the Greek word yeah, and it just
- 21:21Speaker 4: it's a catch all term for any kind of unlawful
- 21:25Speaker 4: sexual behavior. And if you're a first century Jew listening
- 21:29Speaker 4: to Jesus and you hear him say pornea, you immediately
- 21:32Speaker 4: think Leviticus eighteen. And Leviticus eighteen lists incests, bestiality, it
- 21:40Speaker 4: lists adultery, and also lists homosexuality a man lying with
- 21:45Speaker 4: another man as if as if with a woman. In
- 21:48Speaker 4: other words, pornea is was the catch all term that
- 21:52Speaker 4: threw their minds back to Leviticus eighteen where this was mentioned.
- 21:56Speaker 4: And so that's kind of obscured by this. But the
- 21:59Speaker 4: other thing, the other thing that I think that gets
- 22:01Speaker 4: obscured by this is that, Okay, yeah, so he didn't
- 22:05Speaker 4: explicitly use the word that we translate his homosexuality like
- 22:09Speaker 4: Paul does. And a lot of these guys will say, well,
- 22:13Speaker 4: we don't need to worry about Paul and all his
- 22:15Speaker 4: sexual hangups. We just need to pay attention to the
- 22:17Speaker 4: red letters of Jesus. Paul was doing this other thing
- 22:20Speaker 4: after Jesus. Jesus is the pure religion. Paul comes later
- 22:24Speaker 4: and kind of adds his own oppressive male thing to it.
- 22:26Speaker 4: We kind of have to take some of his stuff
- 22:28Speaker 4: with a grain of salt. And to that, I just
- 22:30Speaker 4: want to say, Jesus said that Paul is a chosen
- 22:35Speaker 4: instrument of mind to bear my name to the gentiles.
- 22:39Speaker 4: That's in the red letters. Jesus said, that's Jesus telling you.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Paul speaks for me. What he says is my word.
- 22:48Speaker 4: And Paul says at the end of Second Corinthians that
- 22:51Speaker 4: he says he speaks with the spirit of Christ. There's
- 22:54Speaker 4: no read in black letters. In that theological sense, Paul
- 22:58Speaker 4: is speaking for Jesus. That Paul addresses this a little
- 23:02Speaker 4: more explicitly than Jesus does. It's because Jesus never went
- 23:06Speaker 4: more than two hundred miles from his home. He was.
- 23:09Speaker 4: He was it for the most part in and amongst Jews.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Paul was Jesus has chosen instrument to bear his name
- 23:16Speaker 4: to the Gentiles, which means that Paul was going to
- 23:19Speaker 4: all these far flung places all over the Roman Empire.
- 23:22Speaker 4: And so yes, when he writes to the Corinthians. Guess
- 23:24Speaker 4: what they were doing in corinth they had there were
- 23:27Speaker 4: lots of homosexual activity going on there. When he writes
- 23:32Speaker 4: to Timothy and Ephesus, yes, there's homosexual activity going on there,
- 23:36Speaker 4: and so he mentions it. The same thing in Rome.
- 23:39Speaker 4: So he mentions it explicitly because he's he's on a
- 23:43Speaker 4: gentile mission, and very much amongst the gentiles. This was
- 23:47Speaker 4: an issue in first century Israel, where Jesus was in ministry.
- 23:52Speaker 4: That wasn't a contested issue. That it was.
- 23:55Speaker 3: It was the capital crime.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not saying it didn't exist. I'm not
- 24:01Speaker 4: saying it didn't exist there, but there was nobody confused
- 24:04Speaker 4: about the morality of it. I mean, even if you
- 24:06Speaker 4: were doing it, you know what the Tarra said about it.
- 24:10Speaker 4: So so that's that's the reason why it's not as
- 24:14Speaker 4: explicit as as it is in Paul. It's just their
- 24:18Speaker 4: different context. But they actually both speak to it.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I always say that. I mean that Jesus was
- 24:23Speaker 3: speaking to Jews. And that's why I'm also, you know,
- 24:27Speaker 3: kind of opposed to red letter Bibles. I think they're
- 24:30Speaker 3: unhelpful because all of the words of the Bible are
- 24:34Speaker 3: the word of God, not just the red letters. And
- 24:38Speaker 3: that's how people like James Tallerico can manipulate the Biblical
- 24:45Speaker 3: text and do some some sneaky ice of Jesus in there.
- 24:50Speaker 3: But but yeah, I just I just wanted to get
- 24:54Speaker 3: you on because I saw your tweet today and I
- 24:58Speaker 3: just wanted to make this.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Fairly clear to people.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Why what he's saying in that clip on Joe Rogan
- 25:05Speaker 3: is completely bananas and bonkers.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Yeah. If you're thinking that was an explication of scripture,
- 25:14Speaker 4: it was not. It was a distortion of scripture.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Yes, exactly. Well, Denny Burke, I thank you so much
- 25:20Speaker 3: for taking the time to do this today. I know
- 25:22Speaker 3: you're busy, but I really appreciate it and I hope
- 25:26Speaker 3: this will help people in understanding this issue.
