- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Ready to count some more numbers, Lucas? Lucas: Absolutely. We've done numbers one through sixteen in previous episodes. Today we're going all the way to twenty. Luna: Oh, I remember kumi for ten, and then kumi na moja for eleven, all the way up to kumi na sita for sixteen. Lucas: Exactly. So now, seventeen is kumi na saba. Literally 'ten and seven'. Listen again: kumi na saba. Luna: Kumi na saba. That's seven-teen, ten and seven. Got it. Lucas: Good. Then eighteen is kumi na nane. Ten and eight. Kumi na nane. Luna: Kumi na nane. Sounds like 'nah-neh'. Kumi na nane. Lucas: Yes. Nineteen is kumi na tisa. Ten and nine. Kumi na tisa. Luna: Kumi na tisa. That's easy because tisa is nine. Lucas: Right. And twenty is ishirini. No 'kumi' this time. Ishirini. Luna: Ishirini. That's a new word. Ishirini. Lucas: Let's run through them once more. Seventeen: kumi na saba. Luna: Kumi na saba. Lucas: Eighteen: kumi na nane. Luna: Kumi na nane. Lucas: Nineteen: kumi na tisa. Luna: Kumi na tisa. Lucas: Twenty: ishirini. Luna: Ishirini. Lucas: Great! Now let's imagine you're at a market. You want to buy eighteen oranges. How would you say 'eighteen oranges'? Luna: Umm... machungwa kumi na nane? Oranges eighteen? Lucas: Perfect! Machungwa kumi na nane. Or even kumi na nane machungwa. Both work. Luna: So I could say, 'Nataka machungwa kumi na nane' — I want eighteen oranges. Lucas: Exactly! You're already using it in a sentence. What about twenty eggs? Luna: Mayai ishirini. Lucas: Yes! Mayai ishirini. You can also say ishirini mayai. Both are fine. Luna: Ishirini mayai. Got it. Lucas: Now, let's practice counting from seventeen to twenty in order. I'll say each, you repeat. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Kumi na saba. Luna: Kumi na saba. Lucas: Kumi na nane. Luna: Kumi na nane. Lucas: Kumi na tisa. Luna: Kumi na tisa. Lucas: Ishirini. Luna: Ishirini. Lucas: Now backwards: ishirini, kumi na tisa, kumi na nane, kumi na saba. Luna: Ishirini, kumi na tisa, kumi na nane, kumi na saba. That was fun! Lucas: You're doing great. Let's do a quick quiz. What's nineteen? Luna: Kumi na tisa. Lucas: And twenty? Luna: Ishirini. Lucas: Seventeen? Luna: Kumi na saba. Lucas: Eighteen? Luna: Kumi na nane. Lucas: Perfect! Now you can count from one to twenty in Swahili. That's a big milestone. Luna: I'm so proud of myself. And tomorrow I can count my steps in Swahili. Lucas: Exactly. Practice counting things around you: books, spoons, whatever. The more you use them, the more natural they become. Luna: I will. Thanks Lucas. And thanks Fexingo for this fun lesson. Lucas: Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time for more Swahili. Kwaheri! Luna: Kwaheri!
