- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is Teva K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:20friends review Korean dramas and welcome to another episode.
- 0:24Where I have my good friend Carol back with me.
- 0:27Carol from K Drama Musings and an admin for K Drama K Dramatics
- 0:32Club. I am so thrilled that you're
- 0:34back. Carol, how you been?
- 0:37I've been good. How have you been?
- 0:39I've been well, let's just really quick just say that the
- 0:43last time we were together was for love between fairy and
- 0:46devil. Which I think everyone and their
- 0:50mom listen to that episode. It's very well received.
- 0:53People are very excited to hear us talk about love between fairy
- 0:56and devil. And now we've got a few C dramas
- 0:59in rotation now for Tebak, because it's it.
- 1:02I love C dramas. It's not a problem for me to
- 1:04cover Z dramas, but I know we are K rambles and we are here to
- 1:09talk about a very huge Korean drama today.
- 1:14Carol Carol's like already. I'm already losing my mind
- 1:19because this is my absolute favorite K drama.
- 1:23When I approached you for covering coffee prints, I think
- 1:28this was the beginning of the year.
- 1:30I want to say it was like six months ago and I was like,
- 1:32Carol, do you want to come on and do coffee prints?
- 1:35And you freaked out. And you were, like, absolutely
- 1:39so fucking lutely. I want to do it.
- 1:42And I feel bad that it's taken so long for us to get here.
- 1:45It feels like we were. I've given birth to something
- 1:48and we're finally going to talk about coffee prints together.
- 1:53You know what? I don't mind it at all, because
- 1:55it gave me a chance to rewatch it twice in the time that we in
- 2:02the time that you asked me and. I got so nerdy, I got to a point
- 2:07where I was like trying to figure out their MB TI and it
- 2:11was it took me away, It took me away.
- 2:15Carol, I think I might have to lean on you a little bit for
- 2:18this episode because this is the first time I've rewatched coffee
- 2:21prints since originally watching the show, I want to say a decade
- 2:26ago. What I watched it like you know
- 2:30that meme. 50 time? No. 500 time likely.
- 2:35That's me. This is my show.
- 2:38Definitely me. Yeah, I knew I was my right
- 2:40person. I knew that I had asked the
- 2:42right person to join me for this adventure into coffee prints
- 2:47when you were like, this is my favorite K drama.
- 2:50I can't believe it. Like you were so thrilled.

- 3:51You guys are wonderful. And I mean this is it.
- 3:55We're going to get into it right now.
- 3:56Coffee. Prints.
- 3:58I will read the My Drama List synopsis.
- 4:00It reads Cheyhan Gill is the grandson of Chairwoman.
- 4:04Ang of Dong in Foods. He has never had a job and does
- 4:08not care for responsibility. Han Kil is hung up on his first
- 4:12love, Han Yuju, who only sees him as a friend.
- 4:16Konchan is a 24 year old tomboy who is often mistaken for a guy.
- 4:20Her father died when she was 16 years old and since then she has
- 4:23taken over as the breadwinner of her in her family.
- 4:26When Han Kil and Untan meet, he, not knowing that she's a girl,
- 4:30decides to hire her to pretend to be his gay lover so that he
- 4:33can escape the blind dates arranged by his grandmother.
- 4:37After getting an ultimatum from his grandmother, Han Kil takes
- 4:41over a rundown old coffee shop, later renamed Coffee Prince, to
- 4:46prove that he's capable to both his grandmother and you two.
- 4:50In order to attract female customers, he only hires good
- 4:52looking male employees. And Untan, desperate for money,
- 4:56continues to hide her gender. Gender.
- 4:58To get a job at coffee prints. Yeah, so.
- 5:02How is this not a good premise? Tell me.
- 5:08Oh my God. So I was reading some articles
- 5:10from back in the day from when this aired, and it's some
- 5:13interviews with the creators, which we'll get into in a
- 5:16second. And they they were like some
- 5:19people were complaining that this is not a realistic show.
- 5:23And I was like, OK, so first of all, second of all and third of
- 5:29all, did you not read the synopsis?
- 5:31This is not a realistic show by any stress.
- 5:34No and and I find it so funny that depending on the show,
- 5:39we're always arguing this is not realistic or I want to escape
- 5:45like, what do you. Want.
- 5:46What do you want? What do you want, babe?
- 5:47Because this is not really about not watching coffee prints for
- 5:51realism, OK? Exactly, but I will say it's one
- 5:56of the realest shows out there to me.
- 6:00That's two different definitions of real.
- 6:02Two different definitions for real okay.
- 6:05So Coffee Prints, I didn't know this.
- 6:06Coffee Prints was adapted from the novel Coffee Prints by
- 6:09Easton Lee, and it aired originally from July to August
- 6:132007. We're back with another summer
- 6:17show in the summer. I know I.
- 6:21Know it's 17 episodes long and it was directed by female
- 6:25director Ian Zhong. I feel like that's pretty rare
- 6:28to have a female director or PD, however you want to call it.
- 6:32And she's directed other things like she's in the trap.
- 6:34Sorry about it. I'm so sorry that we had to say
- 6:38she's in the Trap and bring it back on the show, but she
- 6:40directed Cheese in The Trap, The Lies Within in 2019, as well as
- 6:44Summer Strike. From 2020 to yes, I loved
- 6:48summer. I loved so much, right?
- 6:51Yeah, the. Vibe and and she wrote it.
- 6:54Oh yeah, that's right. That's right.
- 6:56Yeah, so. So that's huge.
- 6:58I know For coffee prints, the writers are E Young E Jung Ah,
- 7:03and Jung Hyung New. I'm sorry, Jung Hyun Do.
- 7:07And this was their first writing credits ever.
- 7:10Both of them. yo-yo. Yo, perfect.
- 7:15Yeah. And of course, we'll get into
- 7:17who stars and coffee prints. Kong Yu stars as Han Kil.
- 7:22He was a grand total of 28 years old when he did coffee prints.
- 7:27Talk to me about your feelings around Kong Yu.
- 7:35Kong Yu I have to comport myself.
- 7:40No, I see. It but.
- 7:43I love that man so much. I think he is very talented.
- 7:50I love what he has done with his career.
- 7:53So earlier, you know, I really loved him and his first one, he
- 7:59was like a high school kid and then he does.
- 8:02Hello Biscuit. No before Biscuit.
- 8:05So this is before he got bigger. So I saw him and I saw all of
- 8:10that and then I saw Hello, my teacher.
- 8:13Or biscuit teacher. And I loved it so much.
- 8:17It was problematic because there's a teacher and a student,
- 8:22but it was really well acted. He acted the part of a very
- 8:27emotional teenager very well to me.
- 8:31And then Coffee Prince came along and I was just like, I'm
- 8:37short circuiting because what? What the fuck did you watch
- 8:41coffee Prints when it aired in 2007?
- 8:44Because you were watching. You've been watching K dramas
- 8:45for a very long time. Did were you?
- 8:47There. Yeah, I was not there.
- 8:50I watched it in October 20, 2007.
- 8:55Oh, so few months after, yeah. Basically, you were there.
- 8:59Basically, it was harder to find currently airing dramas back
- 9:04then. That was my soul Jew that.
- 9:08It was a website I was using and that's where I watched it and it
- 9:12was just perfect. Kung Yu has, I think, become a
- 9:19household name. He's a national treasure, and
- 9:22this was his this was his breakout role in Coffee Prince.
- 9:26This is where everybody was like, Oh my God, they fell head
- 9:29over heels for Kung Yu. And he's gone on to do really
- 9:33varied, interesting projects in movies and TV.
- 9:37And we talked about it a little bit on our Goblin episode,
- 9:41because of course we covered Goblin a couple seasons ago.
- 9:44And I mean Goblin itself. 2016 was a huge year for him, The
- 9:49cameo and Squid game. We got Squid Game 2 coming up
- 9:52next year in 2024. He's a Netflix guy now since he
- 9:55started in the silent see. And I really like his his
- 9:58movies, to be quite honest with you.
- 10:00I love the movies that he's done Silenced in 2011, which he sort
- 10:05of pioneered and was like a producer on.
- 10:09Basically, I'm one of the best movies I've ever seen in my
- 10:12life, very moving, very hard to watch.
- 10:17So do you have any, like thoughts on him as a persona?
- 10:21Because I think we can obviously sort of look to his works and be
- 10:25like he's a great actor, really good.
- 10:27Performer, but I think a lot of people also sort of feel like
- 10:32he's a bit endearing, especially now that he has an Instagram
- 10:35account and all. That it took forever, I was.
- 10:40Like him and his cats and the pets, because he's a cat man.
- 10:45I was like one of the 1st 100 people I remember.
- 10:50To follow him on Instagram because I was losing my miles,
- 10:53like finally. And then he's just a dork on
- 10:57Instagram. A pure nerd, so he.
- 11:01Made me He definitely made me reconsider my swiping left on
- 11:06apps for guys who have fish in their hands.
- 11:09Because to me, I was like, oh, he's hot.
- 11:12Like, yes, a fish. But on the dating apps, I'm just
- 11:16like, what is fish? Are you expecting me to cook?
- 11:18Like, what's what's going on here?
- 11:20Swipe left every single time. So now I've worked on my
- 11:24prejudice. Yeah.
- 11:27But I think, yeah, I think his persona is I love that he's
- 11:34mysterious. He keeps me very.
- 11:37Interested in what's happening with Gong You.
- 11:41He's very private, but he's also very loyal, which I really
- 11:45appreciate and really love seeing to be honest.
- 11:49Because he's been with his stylist, for example, since 2005
- 11:55or 2006, and they've become best friends and you see pictures of
- 12:02them on her profile. And like they went on a trip for
- 12:07her birthday and they had matching shirts and like a group
- 12:11of friends and it's just adorable, adorable and he's
- 12:14still working with her. So I I found that very, very
- 12:20endearing And his relationship or friendship with Eden walk to
- 12:24his absolute it's fantastic, so. I I really like him.
- 12:31I also like how he doesn't actually make any political
- 12:37statements except through his work, so through Silenced
- 12:41through supporting or being a member of 1982 Kim G Young, that
- 12:47movie. He did, yeah.
- 12:48He was a husband. Of that movie.
- 12:51Great, great guy to me all around.
- 12:53I agree. I think he's really sort of a
- 12:56perfect. Sort of specimen.
- 12:59I feel like he's Leo DiCaprio without all of the Ibiza Yaffes,
- 13:04with the with the hot models that are 25 or younger.
- 13:09He is just without all that. He is the Leo DiCaprio to be of
- 13:14Korea, you know? Yes, I agree.
- 13:18Yeah, I agree. What a babe.
- 13:19Great guy. Great guy. 10 out of 10. 10 out
- 13:24of 10 So his Co starring Coffee Prince is Yunnan Hey who plays
- 13:28Untun. She was a grand total of 23
- 13:30years old when she starred in Coffee Prince and I don't know
- 13:35if a lot of people know this about her, but she debuted as a
- 13:38member of a girl girl group, Baby Vox or Baby Vox.
- 13:41I'm not sure how you say some of these K Pop group names and she
- 13:45was with the group until 05 and then she was with a project
- 13:50group WSG Wannabe. In 20 up to 2022, so she is an
- 13:56idol turned actor. There's a ton of idol do you
- 14:01throw rock and you hit an idol in Page drama world okay.
- 14:06I think that she is sort of a divisive figure now that I
- 14:11didn't notice many years ago when I was watching her works,
- 14:14but now she's just sort of relegated to the reality.
- 14:22What are they called, like Running Man and those kind of
- 14:26shows instead of doing K dramas? She really hasn't done any K
- 14:30dramas or TV or sorry, movie works since 2018.
- 14:34But Yunnan hey is such a formative figure in the early
- 14:402000s and I I just, I loved her. And she was the my first K drama
- 14:51was one of her K dramas. So she holds a very special
- 14:54place for me. She was in Lie to Me in 2011,
- 14:58which is one of her most terrible shows.
- 15:02Like it was not well received. People didn't like that show and
- 15:05I watched it. That was my first K drama ever.
- 15:11Yeah, So she's holds a very special place in my heart
- 15:15because she's my first K drama leading lady that I ever saw.
- 15:18And then I went on to watch a bunch of her other works, like
- 15:21Princess Hours, aka Kung Yeah, which is 06.
- 15:25The year before Coffee Prince, she starred in Princess Hours,
- 15:29which by the way is getting a remake that's happening next
- 15:32year. I saw that.
- 15:34Unbelievable. And then My Fair Lady in 09, I
- 15:38missed you from 2012. Which I don't know if you've
- 15:41seen that one. She was like, I don't even want
- 15:43to go over the plot, but that was a very, I think the term is
- 15:47mellow thriller. Yeah, so she was.
- 15:50I saw that one. Yeah.
- 15:52I think the one I did not like the most was My Fair Lady.
- 15:57OK, I never watched that one. I don't know why, but I.
- 16:00Stayed clear of it. I loved my favorite from her are
- 16:05Princess Hours, which was her first time.
- 16:09Coffee prints and lied to me. I actually really.
- 16:14Lied to me. Okay, Let's talk.
- 16:17Really like a minute on lied to me because lied to me.
- 16:21Had every trope, right? It had.
- 16:24What was it like? She lied that she was in a
- 16:27relationship with this dude, Then he found out about it, got
- 16:31upset, then went along with it. I believe there was a cherry
- 16:35blossoms scene. There was the wrist grabbing
- 16:39Cocacola, the Cocacola Kiss. Are you joking me?
- 16:44Are you? That was the best Cocacola.
- 16:47Ever I was shook it when I saw this And you know what I came
- 16:52from watching. I'm telling you like this summer
- 16:56or something after I got out of college and I got my first job
- 16:58and I had all of this extra time on my hands that I wasn't
- 17:01studying. I wasn't going to class.
- 17:03I was just going to work had what do I do with all this time.
- 17:06So I watched Lie to me that's I think that summer and I had just
- 17:11come off of binging True Blood. OK.
- 17:14Like I talked to my friends now and I'm like, yeah, I watched
- 17:19True Blood. I I cannot tell you any specific
- 17:23thing about True Blood. It was like a fever dream me
- 17:26binging True Blood on this off the wall like bootleg site that
- 17:30I had like it gave my computer viruses.
- 17:33I. Watched True Blood and then I
- 17:35got hooked on K dramas. So to me, I was shocked that I
- 17:39was so into this whole like wrist grab and like glances and
- 17:45like really it was playing up the intimacy and the romance of
- 17:50everything, right? And then you hit, then you hit
- 17:53the Cocacola kiss scene 10 on it.
- 17:58Never got empty. Damn fantastic.
- 18:02So so that's just putting it into context for you.
- 18:05Lie to me is probably not the best show that I've ever
- 18:09watched, but I think it's underrated to a point.
- 18:13I think you should watch it if you have.
- 18:16It I do think you should watch it now.
- 18:17Granted, Kanjiwan is no longer like in the sphere of acting
- 18:24because of his scandals and everything, but.
- 18:28He's a great actor. Hon Gil Dong.
- 18:30He did a show called Hon Gil Do He?
- 18:33Did, yeah. Yeah.
- 18:34Yeah. Yeah, and he did.
- 18:35Capital Scandal. Those are two really, really
- 18:39good shows. Yeah, well, Yunnan had her own
- 18:42scandals, right? Like she.
- 18:44Was embroiled in the scandal with her management and she
- 18:47tried to, she notified the contract.
- 18:49It was this whole thing. She had haters online when the
- 18:52Internet was new and it was very fierce.
- 18:54She got death threats and things like that.
- 18:57She was fearful of her life and I think then she went on some
- 19:01reality show where she designed an outfit.
- 19:05And it was. Plagiarized quote, UN quote.
- 19:08And that sort of sank her battleship.
- 19:12She didn't recover after that, and.
- 19:14You can tell by her body of work post like 2015 ish.
- 19:19Yeah, yeah, what? Just the types of projects that
- 19:23she's getting. It's not.
- 19:25Yeah, it's not the same anymore. Yeah, and she got criticized.
- 19:28She got ill. And yeah, and then she was ill,
- 19:30She was battling alcoholism. She said that she's sober about
- 19:348 years now in a recent interview.
- 19:36And I'm just like Home Girl has been through it.
- 19:40Luru it so unan. Hey, if you really want to sink
- 19:44your teeth into some K dramas from yesteryear, look up unan
- 19:49his filmography and get to step in because this is what I that
- 19:55this is my introduction to K dramas was her K dramas and I
- 19:58feel like she is so great in a lot of things.
- 20:04Yeah, yeah, she is. So we'll wrap up the cast really
- 20:07fast. We have Ishan Kyun as Hansong,
- 20:11if you might know him as just Ajasi because he is the Ajasi
- 20:15from my Mr. in 20. 18 the. Voice so butter the voice so let
- 20:21me just say it. When I first watched coffee
- 20:23prints, I did not understand the appeal.
- 20:26Of Easton Kyun. I was like, why is this guy even
- 20:29a player? You know what I'm saying?
- 20:31Because I didn't get. I did not get it.
- 20:33I re watching Coffee Prince. The level of attraction that I
- 20:39feel for Easton Kyun, like what? Up through the roof?
- 20:42And it might be because I am way closer to his age that he was
- 20:47when he filmed the drama, because he was 32 years old when
- 20:51he filmed Coffee Prince, right? And that's exactly the same as
- 20:56his character's age in the show. And I was like, I don't know,
- 21:00maybe it's just because I'm getting older and like the voice
- 21:04and the little like mid 2000s get up that they had him in.
- 21:09I was like babe. I ate it up.
- 21:13I ate it all up. Oh God, so he's in the show.
- 21:18He's the second male lead. I might call him cousin like.
- 21:22Throughout the show because I feel like Hansong, his
- 21:25character's name and the Hanco for Cole's character, really,
- 21:31that's been a cut. But I was listening to a
- 21:33podcast, I'd be like, are they the same guy?
- 21:35I'd get confused. So he's either Odyssey or Cousin
- 21:40as we're talking through. But yeah, you might have seen
- 21:42him in Parasite. Also in 20/19, he has like 40
- 21:47something credits to his name for just movies.
- 21:50He's a prolific actor. Amazing.
- 21:53My gosh. Yeah.
- 21:54You should see his show on Apple TV.
- 21:58I think it's Dr. Brain. Dr. Brain.
- 22:01Really good. And then on Prime Video.
- 22:07Money and power. Something around money and
- 22:09power. It was so good.
- 22:11Yeah, it was so. Oh, that man.
- 22:13Yeah. What a man, What a man.
- 22:15I don't know. I don't know him at 32 years old
- 22:18and 07 was like doing things to me this time.
- 22:22And I was like, maybe I was, didn't watch coffee prints at
- 22:25the right time in my life to, like, appreciate this second
- 22:28male league because I had a bad, I had second lead syndrome so
- 22:33bad. On this rewatch of coffee
- 22:35prints, to be quite honest with you.
- 22:39I feel you, OK. So TE Jong UN plays Han Yu Ju.
- 22:42She's the second female lead. She is also a singer turned
- 22:45actress. And then we have a host of
- 22:48Princess here that we can go through really fast.
- 22:51We have. I don't know if this counts as a
- 22:54one of the Princess, but I guess it does.
- 22:56Kim Jong 1 plays Geshi. He's like the coowner.
- 23:01Yeah, another Audrashi who've you seen everywhere.
- 23:03You're like, oh, it's that guy. He's a that guy.
- 23:06I feel for most people here in the West.
- 23:08We have Kim Dong Wook as Halim. He was recently in My Perfect
- 23:14Stranger. Yo.
- 23:16And he's doing delightfully deceitful.
- 23:19So he has two dramas airing and. He's doing.
- 23:23Well glow up. What A glow up, Glow up, glow
- 23:26up. I gotta say, the whole cast
- 23:29except RIP. But the whole.
- 23:31Cast, Yeah, the whole cast blow up.
- 23:35Blow up, Major, But let's continue.
- 23:38Yes. Then we have King Jewuk.
- 23:41Yes, that King Jewuk playing Songki.
- 23:45Yeah, I OK, so besides Isung Kyung throwing me for a loop
- 23:52this rewatch. I was.
- 23:55I was smitten with Kim Jouk in this because for those who don't
- 24:00know Kim Jouk, you might have seen him in her private life.
- 24:06Yes, he's the main guy in her private life, among other
- 24:10things. And him looking really young
- 24:15with the long hair. The long hair was it for me like
- 24:19I was? With the pony with the.
- 24:21Pony. You know what?
- 24:27We'll get to why I loved the show so much.
- 24:30But let's continue. OK.
- 24:32And then we. OK, then we have Eon plays
- 24:37Mignon and unfortunately this actor, why haven't we seen him
- 24:41anywhere else? Well, he died tragically in a
- 24:45motorcycle accident the very next year after coffee prints in
- 24:492008. Right.
- 24:51I had no idea until very recently.
- 24:55I cried. I cried so much because it
- 24:58happened while it happened, while he was filming a drama.
- 25:02So he wasn't on his way back from work, I think.
- 25:06Something like that. Yeah.
- 25:08Yeah. And it was just a rock event.
- 25:10Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:11Yeah, Actually, Yeah. And it was in the middle of Gong
- 25:15Yu's enlistments because Gong Yu enlisted right after coffee
- 25:19prints. And there are pictures of him,
- 25:22like being excused from the military to come to the funeral
- 25:25and just the, oh, my baby, the devastation from the whole cast.
- 25:33I felt that in my spirit. I still feel it.
- 25:35I still feel it. And watching their reunion
- 25:38episode where they get to talking about him and it starts.
- 25:44Ringing. And I'm just like, oh.
- 25:49What a what a great guy. It's.
- 25:50Emotional and life cut too short for sure and RIP eon.
- 25:56Yeah, yeah. At least we have this thing to
- 26:00remember him by, the coffee prints where he is sort of like
- 26:03a bumbling fool and he becomes like a model or something at the
- 26:08end of the show. Yeah, at least it gets like a
- 26:11good ending. And then to wrap up, this is not
- 26:13a Prince. We have Kim Yung look playing
- 26:16Hangill's grandmother. She is everybody's grandmother,
- 26:21OK? She is.
- 26:23She put a lovely lady. I what a class act.
- 26:26I love her. I love following her on TikTok.
- 26:29All of her Tik toks are really weird and stupid and funny and I
- 26:35just love that she's even on there.
- 26:36And I think maybe a lot of people know her as the grandma
- 26:41from hometown Cha. Cha cha, Yeah.
- 26:45Yes, what a blessing. What a blessing to have her.
- 26:50And what a oh the her character and hometown Cha Cha Cha was
- 26:54really a gift to me because I'm like 01 day if she's no longer
- 27:00here. Just the words and the wisdom
- 27:03and all that, she said in Hom Cha ah what a gift.
- 27:09Beautiful song. Yeah.
- 27:10So workout. We come to the end of it, I
- 27:13think. I know how you feel.
- 27:15I think everybody knows how we feel about this show.
- 27:17But please talk to me about coffee prints, your unspoiled
- 27:22thoughts. Unspoiled, OK, I watched this
- 27:27like I said in October 2007, I was in a very emotional space of
- 27:33I want to find my place in the world, like who am I?
- 27:36And and I need people who believe in me.
- 27:39And it just it was just perfect. It was the perfect show to
- 27:43watch. Because it helped me process my
- 27:46emotions. It helped me understand
- 27:49friendships. It helped me even process how I
- 27:54was interacting with my parents at the time.
- 27:57Because I really did feel like both Hangyo and Gunchan, just
- 28:03with what was happening in my life at the time.
- 28:07And so it was like my outlets, because I was, I felt like.
- 28:13As a kid, I didn't have the space to explore my feelings
- 28:19with my parents because I'm from Ghana and this was just it.
- 28:23Everything I was seeing felt like it.
- 28:25So it's a fantastic show on friendship, on found family, on
- 28:31family, on purpose, on love. Yeah, you can't go wrong with
- 28:37coffee brands. I love that answer.
- 28:40I don't think I can give a better answer than that because
- 28:42when I watched coffee prints I was just like a punk and had not
- 28:47been exposed to a lot of K dramas.
- 28:49This was maybe in my first 50K dramas that I watched and I
- 28:55thought it was really good and I could totally understand why
- 29:00this was making waves and why I was seeing this on top. 100 top
- 29:0450, top 20 list that I was going through at the time trying to
- 29:08find really good K dramas. You know, I don't know if people
- 29:12realize this, but it's really was really hard to find credible
- 29:16critique or rankings or ratings on K dramas.
- 29:21Back in the day, right? And I started way later than
- 29:24you. And I had the Internet at my
- 29:25disposal, and I was still like, where do I even start?
- 29:28How do I find these K dramas? Where do I watch like, all this
- 29:30stuff? Yeah, today you just go on
- 29:32TikTok and people someone tells you, like what to watch, how to
- 29:35watch it, whatever. Or you just go on Netflix.
- 29:38It's so easy. So it's so easy.
- 29:41Now, yeah, y'all don't know. You guys legitimately don't
- 29:47know. And so when I watch coffee
- 29:49Prints, I appreciated it immensely and I thought it was
- 29:52really good. I thought some of those scenes
- 29:54were like, like K drama crack moments.
- 29:57And I've said K drama crack a few times lately in different
- 30:00episodes because there are so many K drama crack moments and
- 30:03coffee prints, really iconic ones, that I still remember.
- 30:06They're ingrained in my memory. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:09But I think rewatching today, I'm struck by how.
- 30:14Woke it is, I guess. Thank you.
- 30:16Yeah, thank you. It's yo.
- 30:21This drama was ahead of its time compared to all the dramas
- 30:26during that time period. This drama was like, it talked
- 30:31about feminism. It talked about, you know,
- 30:36purpose and finding yourself and and really putting what you want
- 30:40ahead of love and. It's just it's just perfect.
- 30:44I don't know anyone who doesn't like it.
- 30:47I feel sorry for you, that's all.
- 30:49I have this quote here from Rolling Stone, India that says
- 30:52Coffee Prince was a cut above the rest and that it was the
- 30:54determination of the cast which truly brought each character to
- 30:57life. You made her character
- 30:58believable both as a boy and a girl in love for the first time.
- 31:02Goong's well balanced portrayal of the Moody Han Kyl made him
- 31:06lovable throughout the show. His dilemma on his sexuality,
- 31:09reactions leading to soul searching and the chemistry
- 31:11between him and Yun is seamless. The show raised questions on
- 31:15gender identity, social norms and notions around samesex
- 31:18relationships, femininity, masculinity, which makes it more
- 31:22suitable a show for everyone, even today.
- 31:26Exactly. I'm standing ovation.
- 31:28Yes, stand ovation for that paragraph from Rolling Stone
- 31:31India, because I fully 100% agree.
- 31:35That it covered a lot of ground. And I don't necessarily feel
- 31:40like there was a ton of plot either.
- 31:44We are just sitting with these feelings with these people all.
- 31:47We were just going to the coffee shop every day like you know
- 31:50what I'm saying? Exactly.
- 31:51What was there to it, you know? It felt, you know what it felt
- 31:55like? It felt like I was just getting
- 31:58a vlog from my friends. Oh, I like that.
- 32:03Because it just, it just felt like daily life.
- 32:06It just felt even like the struggles they were having, the
- 32:10emotional struggles. It just really felt like I was
- 32:14watching a vlog with my friends on YouTube, Yeah.
- 32:18I appreciated the chemistry between Gongyu and Yunnan hey so
- 32:22much. This time around, I know.
- 32:24I knew it was good the first time I watched coffee prints.
- 32:26But on this watch, I was like, look, if it's some shows
- 32:30nowadays currently airing shows, recent shows wish that they
- 32:35could have welcome you and Yunnan had back in coffee, you
- 32:40know what I'm saying? Absolutely.
- 32:42Yeah. Yeah, I agree.
- 32:44It's a very natural, sexually tense relationship that they
- 32:49had. And a lot of give and take, push
- 32:52and pull, feelings, angst, all this stuff.
- 32:58And then on top of that, he's grappling with his sexual
- 33:00identity. Like, what?
- 33:02Is he gay now? What does that mean?
- 33:05How is he going to pursue her? I mean, when him, how he
- 33:08thought, he thought he was like, exactly.
- 33:11It was amazing. Amazing.
- 33:13And and I loved that he did not like.
- 33:17They did not air on the side of homophobia.
- 33:21And the reason I'm saying that is because I've heard the
- 33:25criticism that people are like, oh, it was homophobic.
- 33:28No, that's not fair. Not exactly.
- 33:30If you yeah, if you've been heterosexual all your life and
- 33:35then all of a sudden you are. Attracted to someone of the same
- 33:41sex, right. I can imagine that you start
- 33:45wondering. Yeah, you'll start thinking
- 33:48like, yo-yo, yo, what's going on with me?
- 33:50And I think he presented that so well in the drama, his struggle
- 33:55with it, right. And finally accepting.
- 33:59Oh, it's beautiful. It's very.
- 34:02I mean, in that sense, it's very realistic because if something
- 34:06like that happened to someone even today, I don't feel like it
- 34:09would be a an easy ask or an easy decision for someone today
- 34:16to go through that. Whether it's you've been gay all
- 34:19your life and all of a sudden you're attracted to someone of
- 34:21the opposite, Like whatever the case is, you got something, an
- 34:25outlier that's pulling at your heartstrings.
- 34:29How do you handle that? You know, and it's all about his
- 34:33identity and how he thought of how he thought of himself.
- 34:36And yes, how is his family going to take it?
- 34:39Yes. How is society going to take it?
- 34:40Do I overcome this in some? Do I?
- 34:44Do I go for it? You know what I'm saying?
- 34:47Or do I not? Do I shut it down?
- 34:49But how is that going to hurt me?
- 34:50It's literally a spiral for the man.
- 34:54And I loved how he played it because he it was a battle of
- 34:58self loathing. But then he like loves her and
- 35:01slash him and what is he going to do?
- 35:04Like he can't live without her. So it's it's quite emotional and
- 35:11believable for how kung you sort of acted it out.
- 35:15And I think with as much respect as 2007 could afford it, even
- 35:18more respect than even a struggle like this today I would
- 35:21feel. Absolutely.
- 35:24I was watching an interview with him maybe 2 weeks ago and the
- 35:28interviewer, Jung Doyon, asked him what helped you become the
- 35:33actor you are today? And he said Coffee Prince.
- 35:38And then she's like, oh, if you were and if you were to love in
- 35:42real life, which character would you like to follow?
- 35:46And he said Choi and Gill like he had.
- 35:51They're just. He loved so passionately.
- 35:53Yeah. And even.
- 35:56And he had so much courage. And that's what stood out to to
- 36:00him. Yeah.
- 36:00So it's like, oh, you get it, Boo.
- 36:03He. Get it?
- 36:04Yeah, he's really great. I loved seeing some of those
- 36:09clips of them returning and watching the series all those
- 36:13years later. I think the documentary aired a
- 36:15couple of years ago or something.
- 36:17Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:18I think maybe on the 10th anniversary, I don't, I can't
- 36:22remember exactly, but they brought the whole cast back,
- 36:26actually. Maybe it was the 20th
- 36:28anniversary. No, no, that's stupid.
- 36:30Not the 20th anniversary, because I'm going to be 2027.
- 36:33Anyway, they brought everybody back and they had them watch
- 36:37certain scenes and they had little interviews with everybody
- 36:41and I loved how. There's like a soupy article
- 36:45that does a really good job of summarizing all of these little
- 36:47clips and the documentary itself and Kong you commented to,
- 36:52Yunnan said. I remember everything we did.
- 36:54We kissed a lot Since I've aged. I know since I've aged.
- 36:59I can talk about it without feeling shy.
- 37:01And Yunnan says I'm shy and was. I know she was like really
- 37:06bashful about it because honestly, they were all over
- 37:10each other in. The show and I would be
- 37:13completely mortified to return to it after the fact and watch
- 37:18it wait. Wait, I don't think they had a
- 37:21lot of kisses, though. No, what I'm saying is well.
- 37:25Compared a lot of intimacy. Yes, but and and then also I
- 37:29feel like compared to more recent shows even that was a lot
- 37:33of kissing because there's some shows that like you don't get
- 37:36any kisses like some are strike from the same director.
- 37:40Yeah, yeah. No.
- 37:41Kissing. Yeah, so that's what I say.
- 37:44And then Yunnan. Hey, they were watching their
- 37:47own kissing. Yunnan.
- 37:48Hey like averted her eyes and said ohh, it's hot in here.
- 37:52Go, you go. You said Untan was a very
- 37:55motivated girl. She was not passive.
- 37:58I didn't know what on his hands were doing, but after watching
- 38:00the broadcast, our hands were pulling up my tshirt.
- 38:03I guess he never noticed that. She was like.
- 38:06Clawing at him, It's great. It's so great.
- 38:08She was into it. She was into that's why he said
- 38:13she was motivated. I would be like cut, cut please
- 38:19cut because I don't want you to see me blushing right now.
- 38:23Let me see Isung Yun who is Aji? Said Chaihan Gil is gong.
- 38:29You didn't suit him better than any other role.
- 38:32However, Kong, you hesitated to join the production.
- 38:35Explaining It was a time when I had a bit of opposition against
- 38:38romantic comedies after becoming an actor.
- 38:40It was the first time I had experienced that puberty I
- 38:43wanted to grow while fulfilling my sense of achievement.
- 38:46The vibe around me was you have to do this you that's how you
- 38:49become a star, get advertisements and get main
- 38:52roles. And this is something that's
- 38:56even happening today, is that a lot of people are not taking
- 39:00melodrama, dramas, thrillers, these genres seriously.
- 39:06Stars get made with, like, romantic comments.
- 39:10Yeah, romance, right? Like, consider Ryan Gosling or
- 39:16Matthew McConaughey over here. It wasn't until they did The
- 39:19Notebook. It wasn't until they did you
- 39:21know how to this guy in 10 Days that they were really getting
- 39:25play. And they were hesitant to keep
- 39:28doing that because they were afraid of getting typecast, even
- 39:32though the money was good doing these romances right.
- 39:37So I feel like Kong use got a had a valid hesitancy, right?
- 39:43He did, he did. But at the same time, we hadn't
- 39:49gotten like a proper romance from him.
- 39:54Oh yeah, no. Cuz when you say biscuit,
- 39:57teacher? That's a very strange show.
- 40:01Because I remember watching it and I was like, I feel weird.
- 40:06It is a very strange show. And then he did one fine day,
- 40:11which was OK. It didn't have the same hype as
- 40:15coffee prints, but really, coffee prints really felt like
- 40:20the start of Gong Yu. It's.
- 40:22His notebook. It's his notebook, exactly.
- 40:26I haven't seen the notebook, but it's his notebook.
- 40:30I haven't seen the notebook. Not that I am a advocate for The
- 40:35Notebook, but I feel like everyone should see The Notebook
- 40:39at least once. OK, I don't care who you are,
- 40:41just watch The Notebook at least once you can get it and then
- 40:43move, move on with your life. So watch The Notebook Carol.
- 40:48Stay tuned for The Notebook Movie Corner on the Patreon
- 40:51Feed, because I don't know why, but I want to be there for when
- 40:56you when you give me your thoughts on the Notebook.
- 40:58Otherwise it'll just be in our TM's.
- 41:03So regarding the situation, PD Ian Jung explains some actors
- 41:07may feel apprehensive about idol turned actors, referring to
- 41:11Uninha. However, Kung you said I am the
- 41:14problem for myself. He said he wasn't in the
- 41:16position to discuss his costars acting and that made me think
- 41:20this person is cool. Because Golia didn't have an ego
- 41:24about working with Yunnan, who had just received a ton of Flack
- 41:29for her acting in Princess hours.
- 41:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we see behind the scenes
- 41:36videos of Yunnan, hey working so hard.
- 41:40Oh my gosh, she worked so hard because of that Flack she was
- 41:45getting. And I was watching the wrap up
- 41:48party videos where she goes outside and she's just crying
- 41:52her eyes out and people are coming to her like you did such
- 41:57a good job. He did.
- 41:58Like we're so proud of you. It was it was a beautiful
- 42:02moment. Yeah, and Kong, you praised her.
- 42:04Even to this day, he maintains. The reason I was able to become
- 42:07Chaihan Kill was go on, Chan and Union.
- 42:10Hey, that's her character's name and then her real name Union.
- 42:13His passion made me feel embarrassed and helped me to
- 42:15grow. It made me wake up.
- 42:18Yes, which is so interesting because that's what I feel like.
- 42:23That's what her like, to see her work so hard as an idol actor
- 42:31because of that Flack. And then to see her character
- 42:35also work so hard. I could tell the moment he fell
- 42:40in love with her in the show and it was so early on.
- 42:46It was like, well, can I say. It or the show is really old,
- 42:532007. It is old spoiler alert, but he
- 42:58fell in love with her when he went to her house and he sees
- 43:03her schedule and he's like, Oh yes, so she does this and this
- 43:08and this and karate and and walnuts and and milk and he's
- 43:12just like, wow, this person is. Living so passionately.
- 43:16And that's when he starts falling for her.
- 43:20Yeah, he starts appreciating her.
- 43:22Yeah, he understands her a bit more after that.
- 43:25Exactly. Yeah.
- 43:27It's nice. He doesn't have the full
- 43:28picture. No.
- 43:29But he understands her. Yeah.
- 43:30But seeing how her day is mapped out to the minute is really kind
- 43:35of blew him. Yunnan Hey expressed her
- 43:38admiration for the drama, saying after appearing on coffee
- 43:40prints, I no longer heard the term idol turned actress.
- 43:43It's the project that made me into an actress.
- 43:45That's so. Beautiful I.
- 43:49Forget getting really emotional about it because I mean, knowing
- 43:53how her career turned out and how she struggled throughout her
- 43:57life and the different scandals and stuff, I feel like coffee
- 44:00prints has to be super special to her to have that.
- 44:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:07Last thing I'll say about is about Kongyu his.
- 44:10There's a quote from him. Coffee Prints is the project
- 44:13that revived my dying passion. I think I was healed through the
- 44:16drama. We became brighter and hotter
- 44:18together. That's why I think it's that
- 44:20much harder to forget everyone. And that's what makes this
- 44:22project that much more meaningful.
- 44:27I'm sorry. Yeah.
- 44:28So if you haven't watch Coffee Prints and you're listening to
- 44:30this, please just watch Coffee Prints, OK?
- 44:35It's great. It's one that's great.
- 44:38I loved it. I mean, I don't know if I said
- 44:40my thoughts, but yeah, I loved it.
- 44:42I think I have some qualms that we could talk about in this in
- 44:44the spoiler section, certainly, But it is a top tier drama, one
- 44:49of the best out there. It's why I watch K drama, you
- 44:53know what I'm saying? It's for these kinds of dramas.
- 44:57Yeah, I agree. Same my number one drama.
- 45:01It's not my number one, but it's up there.
- 45:04So fun facts really quick. Yunnan hey won Best Actress at
- 45:07the 44th Becksong Awards and so did Yun Jung, the director.
- 45:12She won Best New Director at the 44th Becksong Awards.
- 45:15This has spawned remakes. Of course.
- 45:18You've got remakes coming out of coffee prints coming out of
- 45:21Thailand, the Philippines, Malay, Malaysia and China as
- 45:25well. And then a couple of fun facts
- 45:28about the locations, because I feel like these are iconic
- 45:31locations. The coffee prints.
- 45:34Like Store Coffee Shop was an old coffee shop in Hyundai which
- 45:39was remodeled for the filming. The eponymous cafe was reopened
- 45:42after filming concluded. Sorry, reopened after filming
- 45:47concluded with The Wallflowers painting by Hanyuju and other
- 45:50props from the drama on display. I do not know if it is still
- 45:54there. It's still there.
- 45:56I visited it in 2015. Oh my God.
- 46:01Tell me. About the coffee drinks.
- 46:03Oh my God. How I did my whole pilgrimage.
- 46:08To. To the coffee shop it was not
- 46:12good. Shut up.
- 46:13It was not good by that time yo by that time the the leer like
- 46:20the allure of it. Yes.
- 46:23It was gone and it wasn't well maintained.
- 46:28I am curious to see if they've brought it back up because you
- 46:32know, people are still watching the show, right, And want to
- 46:36visit, but holy yeah, at the time it wasn't that so.
- 46:39Eight years after the show, it was.
- 46:43No good. It wasn't good.
- 46:45It wasn't good. My gosh.
- 46:48I broke my heart, Oh my, but I was still so happy.
- 46:52OK, so wow, so the soul animation center at the foot of
- 46:57Namzan in Ye Jung Dong jungle. That is the rooftop that was
- 47:01used as the exterior terrace for a hung Gill's house.
- 47:04And you can see this rooftop garden thoroughly from the scene
- 47:08in episode 17. But I mean, there's so many
- 47:12scenes that are outside of his house, which is a beautiful
- 47:16terrace. Yo, let's talk about it.
- 47:19Because that was, what, 2007? That was going to be my first
- 47:24apt. I was just like, if I ever build
- 47:27something, it's going to be Chaihan Gill's APT.
- 47:31I sent you a floor plan of it that I drew.
- 47:34Like no one could tell me nothing.
- 47:37That was that was a beautiful apartment.
- 47:40What a great location. I was like, this is luxury.
- 47:44OK? It is beautiful.
- 47:46So. Those are some fun facts about
- 47:49coffee prints. Would you care to rank the, I'm
- 47:52sorry, rate the drama out of five Sojo bottles?
- 47:58Give me a face right now. You're like, please.
- 48:03I'd rate it A5 Sojo bottles and I'll explain why as we go into.
- 48:07The no problem. Spoilers and whatnot.
- 48:09I think I'll give it a four, maybe 4 1/2.
- 48:13That's so much of. Bottles.
- 48:14Yeah. No, you'll find out why.
- 48:16You'll find out why. I don't want to ruin it because
- 48:18I still really believe in the show.
- 48:20You feel me? But yeah.
- 48:22So we're going to talk spoilers for coffee prints right after
- 48:26this. You want to come in?
- 48:34All right, we're back in the spoiler section.
- 48:37We're going to talk spoilers for coffee prints.
- 48:40Carol, where would you? Like to start because I don't
- 48:45have very good notes for the drama.
- 48:49I gotta be honest, I was just watching to watch basically.
- 48:53But if you want to, I told you I was gonna lean on you.
- 48:56Did you wanna talk about anything specific right now?
- 49:00Let's talk about the easy ones like the low hanging fruits that
- 49:06didn't have that much context I'd love to 1st talk about.
- 49:12The relationship between Handgill and Hansen Ajashi, his
- 49:17cousin. OK.
- 49:17OK. OK.
- 49:19Do you want to do that first or are you just listing off some
- 49:22topics that you want to? Cover.
- 49:24I'll do it. Let's do that first.
- 49:25OK, so him and his get so Konyu's character and his cousin
- 49:33are in love with the same woman for the better part of a decade.
- 49:38And the cousin was dating her for like 9 years before she
- 49:42cheated on him and moved abroad. And the the whole show starts
- 49:47with her coming back to Korea and he, the cousin is really
- 49:52messed up about it. And then Kung Yu's just like
- 49:56hovering for a decade and I don't know how to fit.
- 50:02This is icky. Okay.
- 50:05It is icky. It was so annoying for that.
- 50:08It was so annoying for that. Super annoying and we're coming
- 50:13from at it. From not a Korean perspective, I
- 50:17felt that Kung Yu's character was extremely inappropriate with
- 50:21her. You know what?
- 50:24I actually don't think so from a K drama perspective.
- 50:28Really. Because even thinking of like,
- 50:31the conservative nature of Korea, I was like, they are all
- 50:34over each other. It's bizarre.
- 50:38I'm only saying this because when you're looking at the
- 50:41dramas of that time, it was very much we can be brothers, we can
- 50:47love the same girl. Whoever wins, wins.
- 50:50It was very much like that. I just.
- 50:52Don't agree with that. I think it's weird.
- 50:58I think it's weird for sure. But it was a thing.
- 51:02And shows when you look at my lovely Kim Sam.
- 51:04Soon when you look at lovers in Paris, you had an uncle and a
- 51:12nephew who loved the same girl. When you look at Kane and Abel.
- 51:18So she stopped. It stop it.
- 51:22I'm No one has ever brought up Cain and Abel to me.
- 51:27I fucking love that drama. Girl, it's me.
- 51:30I'm gonna ring it up. Oh.
- 51:32My God, I have had so many people on this show.
- 51:35I can. Oh my God, no one has ever.
- 51:38You've watched Cain and Abel. We are.
- 51:40I've watched Cain and Abel. We are one of the only people, I
- 51:44feel like, who have watched that.
- 51:45It's so good, It's so good. It is so good.
- 51:51Oh my God, yeah, yeah, yeah. But OK, So to your point, yes,
- 51:55they love the same woman, but it wasn't as, I don't know, but it
- 52:00wasn't like this younger dude who was.
- 52:05Hanging around. This nuna and she was, she was
- 52:09very flirtatious back to him. Maybe it was because there was
- 52:14like that still tension between them.
- 52:17If she entertained his his like fences.
- 52:21Yes, she entertained it, but I think that's just who she was.
- 52:26Well, we have to talk about her. Who?
- 52:29Exactly. I got issues with her okay.
- 52:33I got major issues until until she has our conversation with
- 52:38with cousin I had major. Issues with her so but look so
- 52:42going back to the cousins so it happens twice to them.
- 52:47Because Han Kyle is in love with you Ju second female lead and
- 52:52then Han Song the cousin falls in love with Unchan.
- 52:57So it's like a love square and the cousins love the same women.
- 53:05Yeah, they just have a type. What can we say?
- 53:07No. They're like wildly different
- 53:10women and. I don't know what to say like
- 53:15this, I don't think. Would this fly today?
- 53:19I don't think it would fly today.
- 53:21I think that what you said about them being different women,
- 53:26Hanyu Chu was sort of like the ideal type of woman and artist,
- 53:32soft spoken, gentle a bit. Off standoffish but also warm.
- 53:40Like she kept you in. She had that exactly.
- 53:44Well, Yunnan hey was just loud and vibrant and yeah, open book
- 53:51and and something that made someone who made them really
- 53:57think about their lives and what they're doing and.
- 54:01Then I have a followup question. Yeah, go ahead.
- 54:04Do you feel like these ladies were relegated to being the
- 54:08Manic Pixie Dream Girl because? I don't.
- 54:15I mean keep going get like I'll just leave the question out
- 54:18there so you can ponder it, but. I don't think so, because Yuna
- 54:28Nahey had her own life, right? And her own.
- 54:34And she was very adamant and persistent in her arc that she
- 54:40was so adamant that she ends up getting his support.
- 54:44So yes, yes, she was there to help him grow, but at the same
- 54:51time, I feel like he was there to.
- 54:55Once she realized her dreams and goals and whatnot, he was there
- 55:00to support her too, and. Yeah.
- 55:03And that was, to me, balance, because you can't just always be
- 55:09the one taking. Yes, yes.
- 55:13They bring up that imbalance way later in the show because it
- 55:16seems like we get a lot of their relationship.
- 55:20Like they get together pretty early in the show, which I feel
- 55:22like a lot of people might bulk at that.
- 55:25They might be like, why did they get together so early in the
- 55:27show? We, it feels like maybe there's
- 55:30way less tension. And stakes throughout the last
- 55:35few. Episodes.
- 55:36What do you mean they got together early?
- 55:39Yeah, Han Kyl and UN Chan got They work together for a few
- 55:42episodes at the end versus they get together at the end of the
- 55:44show. Does that make sense?
- 55:46Oh, OK, they did get together. Yes.
- 55:49And episode. I'd say officially 12.
- 55:52Right, Yeah. So then we have a bunch of
- 55:56episodes left. Like there's 17 episodes, so.
- 55:59They're together for a while and we get to see them grow
- 56:02together. We get to see them, their
- 56:05relationship, right? And I don't, I don't necessarily
- 56:10like even though I brought it up like Mannepixie Dream Girl.
- 56:13I think thinking it through, you're absolutely right that
- 56:16they have sort of a balanced scenario here where he ends up
- 56:21supporting her dreams and he lets go of his right or he finds
- 56:26a new dream, so to speak. But I think with her
- 56:30relationship with Aja, she is a bit of a manic Pixie dream girl.
- 56:35She sort of, she sort of flips out of his life in and out.
- 56:38She delivers milk, she plays with his dog, They have these
- 56:40like park dates and he's like sort of enamored with her and
- 56:45her outlook of life and her zest and her zeal and her youth.
- 56:49And for for him, it is a bit of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl
- 56:54scenario with, but not by Han Gill's.
- 56:59Character or Kong use. Character.
- 57:02We have strayed a little from the cousins.
- 57:05No, but the Cousins, What did you specifically want to talk
- 57:09about with the Cousins? I absolutely loved how they
- 57:15spoke to each other. Oh, really?
- 57:17OK. There was, yes, because there
- 57:21there was a scene where. He's talking about his
- 57:26frustrations with Han Yu Chu, the cousin.
- 57:30Talking about his frustration with Han Yu Chu and Chohan Gil
- 57:33is like, that's because you want to catch her.
- 57:36You want to. Love her scene.
- 57:38OK, that's early. That's pretty early.
- 57:41Early. And that's when it that's when
- 57:46the show became a different show for me, because I'd never seen
- 57:50that before having that. Call in of saying you're being
- 57:55an asshole, this is what you're doing, This is she is a person
- 57:59of her own. And I was like, damn, OK.
- 58:03That was in episode 4, and what the cousin says is that he can't
- 58:08get used to her again. Yes.
- 58:12And Kongyu says that's because you're trying to tame her.
- 58:15Her. Wildness.
- 58:16Is her appeal. Exactly.
- 58:20And then he reads like a quick headline.
- 58:22The the cousin reads a headline in an art magazine that says she
- 58:25doesn't want to get married, which compounds the issue
- 58:30because he does want to get married.
- 58:34Tough. Tough to to like for that guy
- 58:37for their relationship, the second relationship with him in
- 58:40the second female lead. It's very interesting to see how
- 58:47Kongyu understands. Her better than he does.
- 58:52Yeah, yeah. And Kongyu is like, don't try to
- 58:56change her. That's because.
- 58:59He's feeling the same things, right?
- 59:03He's feeling the same things where he feels like everyone is
- 59:06trying to change him into something he doesn't want to be.
- 59:11Yeah, and maybe it's how do I put this.
- 59:18I feel like this is too smart of a thing for men to actually
- 59:22realize and say out loud. Yo, don't try to change her.
- 59:29Her wildness is her appeal. Yes, she's sort of like a cat.
- 59:33She comes and goes when she wants.
- 59:34She has these flirtations. She has these, like, trysts now
- 59:39and then. That's part of her.
- 59:41That's why you like her, is that she's sort of unpredictable.
- 59:45Yeah. Yeah, that's why I'm like the
- 59:48show was ahead of. It and I'm like, look, I there's
- 59:52no way that a man would say. That in real, no shade.
- 59:57But no shade to men. But I have never heard such a
- 1:00:02profound thing. Yeah, and Kong, you supposed to
- 1:00:06be 29 years old, right? Exactly with the show.
- 1:00:13No way in hell is a 29 year old coming through with that, like
- 1:00:16nugget for his 32 year old cousin to to get over his
- 1:00:23complex with his longstanding girlfriend who he wants to
- 1:00:28marry. And it's like, well, why do you
- 1:00:31even. Yeah, what do you think about
- 1:00:33that? I just threw like a little
- 1:00:35zinger in there because it's very much, it's very much giving
- 1:00:40throughout the show. It's very much giving.
- 1:00:42Man written by a woman. Yes, that's what I was just
- 1:00:45about to say. That's why the show is written
- 1:00:48by a woman, because they also have an opportunity for Hansung
- 1:00:53the cousin, to say something a nugget like that to Hanggill
- 1:00:57when Hanggill is like. What's wrong with paying my
- 1:01:01girls debt? Like, why is she mad at me?
- 1:01:03This is later in the show. He serves it back to Gongyu's
- 1:01:07character. That's right.
- 1:01:09And you see, and you see Gongyu's character be like, oh
- 1:01:13Oh my gosh, I've been so dumb. Of course you're right.
- 1:01:17And that's what I really appreciated about their
- 1:01:20friendship is they could challenge each other and the way
- 1:01:24they think. Without the other person bulking
- 1:01:29and saying, oh, I'm going to do it my way, F you and and all of
- 1:01:32that, so you could see that they respected each other and they
- 1:01:36listened to each other and yeah, so I love their friendship.
- 1:01:40I think what you're referring to is episode 16, and the cousin
- 1:01:46says the moment a man makes a woman his, the man wants that
- 1:01:49woman to live according to his wishes.
- 1:01:53Which just because he's won her over, can he force her to do as
- 1:01:56he wants. Exactly.
- 1:01:59Only could be written by a woman.
- 1:02:01There is no way in hell, but this was written by a man
- 1:02:05thinking that a man would say this out loud.
- 1:02:09It's a bit preachy. It's everything a woman would
- 1:02:12want to hear. And us two women sitting here
- 1:02:15talking about it, 110%, we're eating it up.
- 1:02:18You could see it's eating it up right now.
- 1:02:20So I mean, my criticism is, I guess, is it forced upon the
- 1:02:26characters to say this or do you do you feel like it rings hollow
- 1:02:30because it's sort of detached and unrealistic for a man to
- 1:02:33muse about a woman's role in society?
- 1:02:36Or do you feel like it works? I think it works, and I think it
- 1:02:41works because Hanson's character is came off cousin.
- 1:02:48Came off as such a wise a wiser person who is in tune with
- 1:02:54people's emotions, not always his own.
- 1:02:58So he definitely had anger issues.
- 1:03:02Very, very typical. He had anger issues.
- 1:03:08He had a lot of ego and pride. They both did, but to see them?
- 1:03:15Grow past it and let go of their ego and be like yo, I just, I
- 1:03:23just need you. I just want you because at the
- 1:03:26end of the day you find that both of them are very private
- 1:03:32about their relationships. It's just me and her, you hear
- 1:03:36him many times saying. Oh, this is just what happens
- 1:03:40between honey or Jew and me. It's like we've been going at
- 1:03:43this for 10 years. We'll be all right, you know?
- 1:03:47So yeah, we'll work it out. But that doesn't mean that they
- 1:03:52will make stupid decisions. They won't make stupid
- 1:03:57decisions. Sorry.
- 1:03:58And they won't say bad things, but they have each other to draw
- 1:04:03them in. I'm a little.
- 1:04:08With Hengiel's character, I'm like, you're too wise because
- 1:04:15you don't have any friends you don't have.
- 1:04:18So Henkiel is like a shut in. Yeah, like your job is just you.
- 1:04:24Let's just talk about Henkiel first.
- 1:04:26That's Gonggiu's character, right?
- 1:04:30I don't. Believe this man exists, right?
- 1:04:33Obviously, like, man written by women and all that.
- 1:04:35But the way that they created this character, we first see him
- 1:04:39on the plane back to soul and he's flirting aggressively with
- 1:04:43his seat partner, playing cards with her, and he's like,
- 1:04:47smiling. He's chumming it up with her.
- 1:04:50And then when she's like, let me get your number, she wants to
- 1:04:52contact him and stay in touch. After he's like, why would we do
- 1:04:54that? And, like, shut her down, Then
- 1:04:57I'm like, Oh my God, bitches, so.
- 1:05:01And then he's sort of mean in the first few episodes.
- 1:05:04Yeah, right. And then you come to find out
- 1:05:07that he's actually a little teddy bear inside and he's
- 1:05:10really sweet and sort of like a golden retriever boyfriend,
- 1:05:14which is all fine and good. Then you find out what he did in
- 1:05:16New York for the past few years. I thought, oh, he's just romping
- 1:05:19around in New York like eating Shay and doing whatever he wants
- 1:05:24on his titles. Like dime, right?
- 1:05:27Because he's rich. His family's rich.
- 1:05:30No, no, no, no. He was working freelance for a
- 1:05:34toy company for a few years, trying to get enough like clout
- 1:05:42to actually get a job as a toy designer, working on like Legos,
- 1:05:48it looked like. But they didn't say they were
- 1:05:50Legos. They were some other company.
- 1:05:51Whatever. Does Lego know that they did
- 1:05:54that? And I was like, OK, and then
- 1:05:57when she goes into the room finally, that's in his.
- 1:06:00Penthouse apartment that he doesn't let her go in initially.
- 1:06:04They go in and I'm like, what the actual fuck it is.
- 1:06:08A room full of Legos and a giant.
- 1:06:13What's it called? Like a play space that's like
- 1:06:16immaculately detailed. It looks like a medieval like,
- 1:06:22yeah, space. It's one of those things that
- 1:06:23people pay thousands and thousands of dollars to create a
- 1:06:26custom Dungeons and Dragons like.
- 1:06:30Thing. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:06:31Yeah. And I was like, this is really,
- 1:06:35I did not expect that they would take it in this direction.
- 1:06:39And for some reason, I completely blanked blocked it
- 1:06:42from my memory on the rewatch. So when the rewatch hit and I
- 1:06:47was, I was watching this scene, I was like, you're joking,
- 1:06:50you're joking. This man is sitting in here
- 1:06:53playing with toys by himself. Because.
- 1:06:57Because he is an only child. So that's the first.
- 1:07:00Thing No. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:07:02And he had issues with his parents, so with his dad to be
- 1:07:09specific. So he's trying to make sense of
- 1:07:14his world. I don't think it was strange
- 1:07:18that he was playing Lego only because.
- 1:07:21I felt like he had this facade for his family, whether it was
- 1:07:26his grandma or his mom. He always had this playful,
- 1:07:31outgoing facade and when he was by himself, he was more
- 1:07:37reclusive. It was really Gon Chan's
- 1:07:40character who made him talk more and and pushed his emotional
- 1:07:46boundaries, but otherwise. When he's not around people,
- 1:07:50he's just by himself and I think I get.
- 1:07:55The recluse I get, I get that he doesn't have any friends.
- 1:07:58I get that he has this issue with his dad.
- 1:08:02I understand he's got daddy issues.
- 1:08:04I understand he's not really close with his dad and that he
- 1:08:08wanted to get away and do his own thing and find his own dream
- 1:08:11and making toys was something he could do in his own.
- 1:08:15Yeah, and. That's what he says later on in
- 1:08:17the show. I get all that.
- 1:08:19It's literally the shock of she's like, what's in the room
- 1:08:23and they go in and it is this entire play space that is not
- 1:08:31even I I was questioning the level of the play space because
- 1:08:36I was like, OK, why is this entire game board that's the
- 1:08:40size of the room on the floor. Why can't you put it on like a
- 1:08:43custom table that's closer to, like, chair height?
- 1:08:48That he can play and like, not be huddled over on the floor
- 1:08:51with like some pillows and stuff for comfort.
- 1:08:54I was like, I was like, look, I'm all for creating a space
- 1:08:59that's your own and having this hobby, having this passion,
- 1:09:03whatever. I was like, he's rich, let's
- 1:09:06take it up a notch. Like, let's like level up.
- 1:09:10But it wasn't about the setup. It was more so about he's still
- 1:09:14a child. I know, I, you know, I agree
- 1:09:18with you and I understand what you're saying.
- 1:09:21Maybe it's just me that I'm like, if I was untan and I never
- 1:09:26mind that I have nowhere near the same background as untan.
- 1:09:29If I walked in and I saw this, I would have been like, first of
- 1:09:32all, what the fuck? Second of all, get me a chair
- 1:09:35and I want a cushion and I don't want to sit on the floor and I'm
- 1:09:40going to order you a nice table to put this thing on because.
- 1:09:44I am not getting scoliosis playing with you in this middle
- 1:09:48room, OK? I feel like your expectations
- 1:09:51are high for a bachelor who doesn't want to work.
- 1:09:56Right. Who did not design his space
- 1:10:00himself? His grandma did.
- 1:10:02Like he just shows up. You got a point.
- 1:10:04Guys, Yeah, guys keep going to guys places.
- 1:10:09True. He does keep it pretty clean, so
- 1:10:10I'm not far off from like, you know.
- 1:10:14Maybe he's just an orderly person, but you'll go to a guy's
- 1:10:18house and all he'll have is his computer channel.
- 1:10:22Stop, stop. Because this is a running joke.
- 1:10:24This is a running joke in just society, right?
- 1:10:28That they'll have, like, a mattress on the floor and a
- 1:10:31really nice game console and a TV with the wires still, like,
- 1:10:34sticking all over the place, and they'll be like, welcome.
- 1:10:37And I'm like, no, no, no. Get your life in order.
- 1:10:44Get a freaking bed frame. Exactly like I love that running
- 1:10:49joke, though. I do I just.
- 1:10:52You go to that stuff A. Few times so I know what I'm
- 1:10:56saying. It's scary.
- 1:10:59It's scary and he's very scary. He's not at that level, though.
- 1:11:01He's not at that level. He's way above that level.
- 1:11:05OK, He's got furniture. He's got food in the house.
- 1:11:07He's got dining chairs. He cooks.
- 1:11:10He cooks. OK, like, I'm.
- 1:11:12I'm not far off from, like, coming in here and being like
- 1:11:14this is bare minimum. Let's level up, OK?
- 1:11:17Well, wasn't it the same in House of Cards?
- 1:11:21Did you ever watch House? No, I never watched House of
- 1:11:23Cards, The American or The The. American one.
- 1:11:28The guy had a whole. What's what's the war in the war
- 1:11:34between the North and South in America?
- 1:11:37I'm in Canada. Sorry.
- 1:11:38Yeah, that one. I'm in Canada.
- 1:11:41OK, Sorry, I'm saying. Civil War?
- 1:11:42Civil War. Yeah, he had a whole toy setup
- 1:11:46thing that he was always playing with and it was on the floor.
- 1:11:51I can know. Can know.
- 1:11:53No media. Oh my gosh, you're telling me
- 1:11:56Kevin Spacey was on the floor? Yes.
- 1:12:00Kevin Spacey. That's him.
- 1:12:02Yeah. Let's not get into Kevin Spacey
- 1:12:04at the moment, but OK. That's a word.
- 1:12:08Sorry, we just cursed on the show.
- 1:12:10We mentioned Kevin Spacey, so, OK, so that's how Kyle kung Yu's
- 1:12:17character. He's got, he's got a lot going
- 1:12:20on, but I would say that I didn't like the whole drama with
- 1:12:26his dad. Which I thought was very simple
- 1:12:28to understand, and they complicated it because they were
- 1:12:30like, he's an illegitimate child, that's what he believes.
- 1:12:35And that's not his real mom and his dad had an affair and all
- 1:12:39this stuff. Come to find out, he's just some
- 1:12:44other kid. Like they had friends that fell
- 1:12:46in love and then he was born out of wedlock or so.
- 1:12:50No, no, they were married. And then they got divorced.
- 1:12:53And then his mom died in a car, in a car accident.
- 1:12:57And then he was in an orphanage and the dad who moved to
- 1:13:01Australia just like, fucked off and didn't care about his child.
- 1:13:06And then he was adopted by his current family.
- 1:13:12And I'm like, it's so annoying to me that they, yes, I found it
- 1:13:18so annoying and that they were trying to derive drama out of
- 1:13:22it. And I was like, this is not
- 1:13:24where the draw. This is not where the drama is
- 1:13:27at, you know? It's lack of communication and
- 1:13:33the good old, you know, guys who are stoic like the dad, never
- 1:13:38actually saying anything. And I and I in part understood
- 1:13:42him because this is the child of his first love.
- 1:13:45He's not gonna every day be like, yo, this is my first love
- 1:13:49when he's married this woman. And unfortunately.
- 1:13:54Messed up. It's so messed up.
- 1:13:57It's too messed. It is so messed up.
- 1:13:59It is too messed up. But I think the mom character is
- 1:14:04more loving than necessary. More loving than that.
- 1:14:09Situation in that situation like how are you bringing your first
- 1:14:15loves? You just can't get over her.
- 1:14:18Your husband's first love. Had a child, died.
- 1:14:24Now you're gonna raise your husband's first loves child.
- 1:14:28Yeah, like. It's a lot.
- 1:14:30Come on. Come on.
- 1:14:31It's a lot. It's a stretch.
- 1:14:33It's such a stretch. You see what I'm saying?
- 1:14:35Like it's, yeah, as much as they wanted to and then they kept.
- 1:14:39It felt like they just kept adding to the drama versus
- 1:14:43taking away. Like I'm like to simplify.
- 1:14:45He has daddy issues. We're done.
- 1:14:47I don't think. I think it could have been
- 1:14:48enough where the dad was just ill prepared to raise a child.
- 1:14:54Maybe he has issues of his own and they had to work it out
- 1:14:57versus he's raising his first loves child and the dad, the
- 1:15:02biological dad coming back. I was like I don't give a shit
- 1:15:04like it was not good. I did not appreciate the
- 1:15:09biological dad. What a talk to me.
- 1:15:13Talk to me. I I did not appreciate that
- 1:15:16scene because I'm just like, what do you want?
- 1:15:19Why are you, why are you back here?
- 1:15:22And I think they used it as a way to tell him the truth of
- 1:15:27his, you know, origin story, but I didn't care for it.
- 1:15:32And they're like, oh, you have a brother.
- 1:15:33And I was just like, I don't, I don't care.
- 1:15:37I don't care. And I don't think they it wasn't
- 1:15:42that important because the same way he struggled with his
- 1:15:46sexuality and and family and found family, you don't see him
- 1:15:51struggle with this whole dad situation.
- 1:15:56So it's not that important. It's not that important.
- 1:15:59I do appreciate how going Chan supported him in it.
- 1:16:04Oh, sure, sure. But.
- 1:16:07Comma, I don't care. I don't care.
- 1:16:09He didn't seem to mind. It was it was a lot for him, but
- 1:16:13he seemed to take it in stride and just felt like a waste of
- 1:16:17time. And the drama is sitting pretty
- 1:16:19at 17 episodes. So to me, if this was made
- 1:16:24today, this would be 12 episodes.
- 1:16:28They would cut down so much of that crap.
- 1:16:31They would cut down on the mom like Going Ton's mom.
- 1:16:35And the neighborhood butcher who have like an on and off again
- 1:16:38like every conversation they have.
- 1:16:39I'm like it's the same conversation.
- 1:16:41Literally the same conversation. Every time that he has a crush
- 1:16:44on her he wants to marry her. Why isn't she giving him the
- 1:16:47time of day? And it's just nothing
- 1:16:48Conversations, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:16:50That would have been cut the whole drama with conchants mean
- 1:16:55little bratty sister and. And so I got.
- 1:17:00Oh my God. Entitled little bitch.
- 1:17:02I hated her for so much of the show.
- 1:17:05And then her with Mignon. I hated the way she treated.
- 1:17:09Her. She treated him like shit, like
- 1:17:12shit. So every time they were together
- 1:17:14and she was demanding things and he was smitten over her and
- 1:17:17would do anything she she wanted.
- 1:17:19I was sick of it. It happened so much so if this
- 1:17:22was 12 episodes made today, all of that would be cut down or
- 1:17:27gone entirely. So many things would be taken
- 1:17:32out, like the whole drama. Also I hated this of Kinjewuk's
- 1:17:37character Sony Songki, him and the the Japanese lady or
- 1:17:43something that he fell in love with.
- 1:17:44But she was married in an abusive relationship and then
- 1:17:47she escaped to Korea and he followed her to Korea and he was
- 1:17:50stalking her, his her. Son or something in the daycare.
- 1:17:54And he was like, where do you live?
- 1:17:55And I was like, what is this? What is this?
- 1:17:59And then she packs up and leaves.
- 1:18:00She kept warning him like stop coming by here.
- 1:18:02I don't want to deal with you. And even if I like you a little
- 1:18:06bit it's not that much. It's not that serious.
- 1:18:08Why are you here exactly. And she just up and leaves
- 1:18:13leaves like doesn't tell her, doesn't tell him where she's
- 1:18:16going, cuz so Kim J looks drama. Another hindrance of the show.
- 1:18:21I was skipping most of that shit.
- 1:18:24I mean, the list goes on for different things that I don't
- 1:18:27care about. Yeah, you know.
- 1:18:32So that's the major qualm with the show for me, because we got
- 1:18:3617 episodes and you're not just watching Kung, You and Yun and
- 1:18:42hey, you're watching all of these characters and their
- 1:18:45various. Idiosyncrasies.
- 1:18:47And I'm like, I don't care. I don't.
- 1:18:51And maybe that makes me a bad person or maybe it just makes it
- 1:18:54really obvious on rewatch what I care and don't care about in
- 1:18:58stories and what is the meat right.
- 1:19:01I don't want to keep eating you know.
- 1:19:04Breadsticks all episode. I want to fill up on the main
- 1:19:08course, OK? And to me they're they were the
- 1:19:13main course. OK, yeah, I agree.
- 1:19:17I agree. I think.
- 1:19:19I feel bad because I feel like we've gone to the part of the
- 1:19:21episode where I'm just like shitting on this show.
- 1:19:25But I, you know, I think. That because they had 17
- 1:19:31episodes, they got to show a little bit about everybody's
- 1:19:35life. Was that necessary?
- 1:19:37I don't know. But does that make them
- 1:19:41memorable at this time? Absolutely.
- 1:19:44When you think of Kim J Woo, you do think of his character in
- 1:19:49Coffee Prince. Each person had a distinct story
- 1:19:55to them that you remember, right.
- 1:19:59The cofounder of The Coffee Prince, I felt like his story
- 1:20:04with his love life was there to to show and to like be a lesson.
- 1:20:13To Cher, hang out and Sunky. I liked his love story and the
- 1:20:19way that he told it was very well done because he does it on
- 1:20:23the rooftop and this is after home use characters found out
- 1:20:28the jig is up. Like he knows that Untine is a
- 1:20:30is a girl and he's. Really.
- 1:20:32Oh my gosh, that is That moment is one of my favorite lines in
- 1:20:36the show when he says something along the lines of.
- 1:20:42Yes, I know I'm angry. But when I think about it, can I
- 1:20:45live without this person? That that yo perspective and
- 1:20:52just forgiveness and letting it go so that you can move to the
- 1:20:57next stage. I was like, Oh my God, that's
- 1:21:01amazing. I thought it was a very good use
- 1:21:03of that story. From what was it hometown?
- 1:21:08The the other co-owner or something of the coffee prints.
- 1:21:12He was very good at inserting some much needed perspective
- 1:21:17throughout the show, but that scene was amazing for him.
- 1:21:20I didn't like how they thought that was juicy enough to bring
- 1:21:23around in the final episode where he meets that first love
- 1:21:27again, the one who ditched him and was like really bad to him.
- 1:21:32And she's married and has a kid and all this stuff.
- 1:21:35And I'm like, we don't need this.
- 1:21:36We do not need this. That was a standalone thing in
- 1:21:39an earlier episode. We don't need it.
- 1:21:41So that's what I mean by There was a lot of little things that
- 1:21:45added up, and I just didn't like some of these side stories that
- 1:21:49didn't need to be. Side stories that could have
- 1:21:51just been. Oh really cool monologue instead
- 1:21:54of like, oh, now we have to find out what happened to him in his
- 1:21:58first level. Did we need to circle back on
- 1:22:00that? No.
- 1:22:01No we didn't. Know I agree.
- 1:22:07Let me see. I also that character Hongge
- 1:22:11Hongge Chic. That dude was disgusting.
- 1:22:17I don't know how he lived. I don't know how he lived.
- 1:22:22See, it made sense that he was on the floor.
- 1:22:24Filth, because he was in episode one, he was like picking his
- 1:22:30nose and I was like weird, ill and then he kept doing really
- 1:22:35gross hygiene things. The towel that he used.
- 1:22:39On no, no, stop, stop, stop something.
- 1:22:42I was like this is nasty and then him picking like some gum
- 1:22:47off the glass in coffee prints and then like.
- 1:22:52Putting it in his mouth and stuff, he was disgusting.
- 1:22:56A cesspool. A cesspool.
- 1:22:59So that's a side note for that guy.
- 1:23:02Because I was like, I don't think they would ever make such
- 1:23:06a gross dude in a current drama. I don't know why they made this
- 1:23:11guy so repulsive that I was not laughing.
- 1:23:18But he was really good at his job, though.
- 1:23:20True. True.
- 1:23:21And then I couldn't tell if it was real or not because the way
- 1:23:23they shot it, I was like, did he really just do that?
- 1:23:28Like take a towel and like clean the tow cheese out from his feet
- 1:23:33and then clean his teeth with the same towel?
- 1:23:37The shot is unbroken, so I'm convinced that they made him do
- 1:23:41all these nasty things over and over again for the take.
- 1:23:46It's. Nasty.
- 1:23:47Imagine. It's so good.
- 1:23:49Yeah, it was. So let's talk really quick about
- 1:23:54the meat. Cute.
- 1:23:55And then we can talk about the whole tension of them falling in
- 1:23:58love and some great scenes that we have.
- 1:24:00OK, so she's really poor. She's living paycheck to
- 1:24:05paycheck. She's a delivery driver.
- 1:24:07She's a Taekwondo instructor. She's peeling chestnuts.
- 1:24:10She's sewing eyes on little plushies.
- 1:24:14And it's all menial work, and her mother is an overspender.
- 1:24:19She's spending $100 on shoes that they can't afford.
- 1:24:22It's really messed up. But she delivers food to Kong
- 1:24:26Yu's penthouse apartment, and he is nearly naked.
- 1:24:33He's just in a towel, and he's sitting on a on a couch, using a
- 1:24:38smaller towel to wipe the shower, the water off of his.
- 1:24:43Legs and she looks up his towel as he's drying himself and
- 1:24:50definitely sees him naked. I had got I got questions
- 1:24:56though, because why? First of all, he gets out of the
- 1:25:00bathtub Because he's taking a bath full of soap and it's like
- 1:25:05a bubble bath. He gets out, still covered in
- 1:25:10soap sets. OK, that was and I was like.
- 1:25:14He's a maniac. He's a maniac because he cuts
- 1:25:18out of the shower. He's like on the phone or
- 1:25:19something. And I was like, is he going to
- 1:25:22get back in the bath? I was so confused.
- 1:25:25And then he starts drying himself off, just puts a towel
- 1:25:27on with soap still on his body. And I was like, somebody call
- 1:25:3191, call 911 because he needs help.
- 1:25:36That was uncalled for. I was like, who does that?
- 1:25:41And then she shows up and he's like, Oh yeah, just leave the
- 1:25:43food there at the front table. Yeah, And I'm like, who the hell
- 1:25:49takes delivery in a towel still covered in soap sets?
- 1:25:55And I will. Say.
- 1:25:59It was so K drama. It was so K drama.
- 1:26:03I don't think it was K drama, because sometimes it's crucial.
- 1:26:07Listen, I was sick a couple of months ago.
- 1:26:10What are you telling me? What are you telling me, Carol?
- 1:26:13Let me just finish. Let me just finish.
- 1:26:15I was sick. That's the context.
- 1:26:17I was sick and I put it on my Instagram and this person I
- 1:26:21hadn't worked with in like 4 years was like, hey, I have some
- 1:26:26antibiotics, I will get you, I will bring it to you.
- 1:26:29And she told me she'll come at 12.
- 1:26:32So I'm in the shower, I'm washing my hair.
- 1:26:34I have, I'm black, I have like 4C hair and she's, I'm washing
- 1:26:41my hair and I get a text. Hey, I'm here.
- 1:26:44She was 2 hours early and she was on her way to drop her
- 1:26:48sister, her daughter off at a birthday party.
- 1:26:50So I'm like, ooh, I got to go. So I just put on my shower cap,
- 1:26:54I put on my robe, I ran downstairs and that was like
- 1:26:59conditioner. All over me.
- 1:27:02So you know what? It happens.
- 1:27:05It happens. I was just like.
- 1:27:07How do I put it? He No, he didn't Even he wasn't
- 1:27:13care. He did not care because he was
- 1:27:15already out of the back before she ever knocked on the door.
- 1:27:19Yeah, he didn't care. OK, he's.
- 1:27:23I was surprised billing that he was.
- 1:27:25Billing because of what? First of all, he had a studio,
- 1:27:30so it was just one big space. It was an extended bathroom, OK,
- 1:27:35with a couch. So he was.
- 1:27:38No. But then he's kind of tickled by
- 1:27:40the fact that she get she looked at him or he because at this
- 1:27:44point he thinks that delivery driver is a man.
- 1:27:47He's like, oh, did he see something that he liked?
- 1:27:50I think that was around the line that he said, yeah, and I was
- 1:27:53like, this man is out of bounds. Out of bounds because that is,
- 1:28:00so he's. Playful he's.
- 1:28:03So open and. He's so open and playful.
- 1:28:08Tickled by the fact that she she might have seen, so he might
- 1:28:12have seen something I was like, Oh my God, I wouldn't like.
- 1:28:18I don't know if this is just a man thing or what, Like if you
- 1:28:21are one of these people that is OK with this scene and would be
- 1:28:25the Kong Yu's character. Do this reaction, have this this
- 1:28:30play out and you're perfectly fine with it.
- 1:28:32Please talk to me because I want to know what kind of personality
- 1:28:35you have and I don't know if it's just a personality thing.
- 1:28:40I'd love to know her meet cute with the second male lead which
- 1:28:44is our cousin is really good. I think this is the better me
- 1:28:48cute to be quite honest with you because she I know she delivers
- 1:28:53milk to his house every morning and.
- 1:28:56She's on the other side of the gate of the gate at his house
- 1:29:00and he has got a giant sheep dog named Terry, which I love the
- 1:29:05name Terry for a dog. Terry is like a human name and
- 1:29:11she's petting the dog, she's playing with the dog, she's
- 1:29:14awooing the dog. She's like, oh, trying to get
- 1:29:16the dog to howl with her. And it's so charming and.
- 1:29:21She tells the dog, oh, like, get your owner, get your dad to come
- 1:29:25out and, you know, have some fresh air or something.
- 1:29:28And he hears her talking to the dog and being really good to the
- 1:29:32dog. And she leaves and all he
- 1:29:34catches is like a glimpse of her leaving on her bike.
- 1:29:38Yeah, and I was like. This is a really good me.
- 1:29:42Cute. It is.
- 1:29:44And I think that it's especially fascinating because his
- 1:29:48introduction to her is a girl, because he heard her voice
- 1:29:53while. And Chan, let's talk about it
- 1:29:57for a second. During those times, all the jobs
- 1:30:00she was doing were for men. So because she passed as a guy,
- 1:30:06she was able to get those jobs. And so you could see in their
- 1:30:12head the, What is it? I don't want to say prejudice,
- 1:30:18but they already have those linked images to yeah, oh,
- 1:30:23delivery guy, oh, this guy, guy, guy.
- 1:30:27And for him to see her as a woman first.
- 1:30:30I was like, oh, this is so cute. This is perfect.
- 1:30:33Yeah, it's really cute and. I love that later on she he
- 1:30:38meets her outside the wine bar where she's like temping for a
- 1:30:42night and she gets the gender of the dog wrong.
- 1:30:47I thought this is such a great touch because she goes, she
- 1:30:49thought it was a girl dog and he goes, oh it's a boy and she's
- 1:30:53like, oh Dang, I thought it was like, I thought it was a girl
- 1:30:55and I'm like, wow, wait wait a I guess inside joke I guess is
- 1:31:02good. I like that little nice touch.
- 1:31:05But then they enter here and Kong, Kong, you entered the
- 1:31:08contract relationship. She plays his fake boyfriend.
- 1:31:13He doesn't believe her when she gives her ID number and it has a
- 1:31:1713 in it, which signifies that she's a female.
- 1:31:22He's like no, no, no, give me your real ID number.
- 1:31:25See. But that's what I mean by he
- 1:31:28already had his preconceived notions.
- 1:31:31I know of what a girl should look like and what a guy.
- 1:31:35Looks. Like, I know it's crazy, but I
- 1:31:38did. I thought I took a step back
- 1:31:39when I think there's a moment where she's talking about
- 1:31:42payment and she wants payment for every little thing of
- 1:31:45skinship that he does to her on these blind dates.
- 1:31:48So she's like, what does a handhold cost that should be
- 1:31:52Cost this, this cost this. If you touch me here, cost this.
- 1:31:56And then she stops short of the kissing price and he follows
- 1:32:01that up with, what if I rape you?
- 1:32:05And I was like what I was like. Did I read that wrong?
- 1:32:09Wait, what? Yes, yes.
- 1:32:12No, I gotta look that up this. Is episode 2 episode two.
- 1:32:16He says that to her in a playful tone because she stopped short
- 1:32:20of kissing. Then he I guess he thought this
- 1:32:23would be funny if I follow this up and tease her about what if I
- 1:32:26rape her and I was like ho ho. Wait, did that did he say sleep
- 1:32:30with you or did he actually say rape?
- 1:32:33The translation. On Vicki was rape.
- 1:32:37Stop it. Yes.
- 1:32:40OK, that just brought it down for me.
- 1:32:42And then in that same episode, he parks his Mini Cooper in the
- 1:32:48middle of two spaces, 2 parking spaces, like he parks on the
- 1:32:52line and I was like red flag, red flag like.
- 1:32:58If I don't, I don't know how to drive, so I'm just.
- 1:33:01Like, Oh my God, Carol, you do not park.
- 1:33:04In the middle of two spaces, OK, that's just not that.
- 1:33:09That's asshole behavior. And so those two things taken
- 1:33:12together, I was like, is there other stuff that I'm missing
- 1:33:15that I don't remember happened that are super red flaggy for
- 1:33:18this guy? Oh my gosh, now you're gonna
- 1:33:21make me watch this again. I can't believe you didn't see
- 1:33:25this. And then he manhandles her so
- 1:33:28much throughout the show. He does.
- 1:33:31Like, just yanking her around and oh, let's go talk and he
- 1:33:35grabs her wrist and like, Yanks her out.
- 1:33:36I'm like, this stuff is really annoying and sort of dated and
- 1:33:44uncomfortable to watch. So all of those things were
- 1:33:46early, right? Well, those two things.
- 1:33:48And then the manhandling happened throughout.
- 1:33:51I have an episode 4. This is my note.
- 1:33:54I swear, all these guys are gay. This is my note because I said I
- 1:34:00have like proceeds too, because at the first team dinner that
- 1:34:06they have Mignon that unfortunately the actor that
- 1:34:09died, that character gets drunk and kisses Jaewuk, Kim Jaewuk on
- 1:34:15the back of his head. And then the other guy, Kim Dong
- 1:34:19Wook, that guy, that's his real name in real life.
- 1:34:22He sucks on his toe. And then he kisses Kongyu.
- 1:34:27He kisses Kongyu on the head, smothers the old man Kim Jong
- 1:34:33Tang one, that's the real actor's name.
- 1:34:35And then he kisses Yunhe Yunhe on the lips.
- 1:34:42And presumably all of these guys are straight and I'm like,
- 1:34:46bullshit, bullshit. All these guys queer, OK?
- 1:34:49Like, this is not. I mean.
- 1:34:53What do you feel about the I feel like they're blending the
- 1:34:56the as much as the show talks about explicitly like the
- 1:35:02homosexuality. I feel like the show is just
- 1:35:05gender bending and a fluid sexuality all around.
- 1:35:11Yeah, I think it was. Let me see, 22,007.
- 1:35:19I'm gonna age myself. OK, it's for a moment.
- 1:35:21Don't worry about it. So please forgive me, Okay.
- 1:35:30So 2007 was the first time I had heard the name the term
- 1:35:35metrosexual. Really.
- 1:35:37Yes, and I just had to look it up again.
- 1:35:41The definition relating to or denoting men who live in urban
- 1:35:45areas, enjoy shopping, fashion and similar interest
- 1:35:48traditionally associated with women or gay men.
- 1:35:51I think that there was, there seemed to be a lot of
- 1:35:57representation of that in the show with with Sungi, the waffle
- 1:36:02guy and and then just the way they spoke.
- 1:36:09But I also think that without saying, I don't know, I don't
- 1:36:15know how to explain it because. Growing up I would see guys like
- 1:36:20hold hands and and do stupid shits.
- 1:36:25OK. Which now we would put
- 1:36:28definitions on. Uh huh.
- 1:36:30Which we didn't back in the day. And you know what, maybe that's
- 1:36:34my hang up is that I feel like there's definitions for things
- 1:36:37now that happened throughout the show and they didn't put any
- 1:36:42labels on anything throughout the show exactly.
- 1:36:45Exactly. Labels.
- 1:36:46That's, that's the word. So I didn't find it weird
- 1:36:53because I also went to a boarding school for for three
- 1:37:00years. So I was in a boarding school
- 1:37:02and it was a mixed school, but you had separate quarters for
- 1:37:07the guys and the girls, but you heard and you saw this shit all
- 1:37:10the time. And so OK.
- 1:37:14So you're a little desensitized. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:17I wasn't desensitized, but OK, it was more so I didn't have a
- 1:37:20label. It's normal.
- 1:37:23Right, right. I don't.
- 1:37:26I don't know what's right or wrong in this case to put a
- 1:37:28label on it or to just leave it the way it is.
- 1:37:31It is. What is?
- 1:37:33I I I think it is what it is, is what I prefer, OK?
- 1:37:38Because I think labeling has become a little too political.
- 1:37:42Absolutely, yeah. Episode 4, they go play
- 1:37:49basketball and shirtless. Kongyu will always be top tier
- 1:37:58like K drama to me because they go, they like ditch work one day
- 1:38:03because it's slow at the coffee prints.
- 1:38:06And they go play basketball. Com you starts to chew them out,
- 1:38:08starts to reprimand them and then he's like, I'll play you
- 1:38:10for whatever out. I don't even know how they get
- 1:38:12to the baseball. I'm sorry basketball.
- 1:38:16But A+ plus scene that follows it up because after the
- 1:38:21basketball they sort of they come together as a group right
- 1:38:25of like you talk about found family earlier.
- 1:38:27Now the guys are even closer after doing this like basketball
- 1:38:30scene. I'll know how you And then hey
- 1:38:32kept it together because they're like dripping in sweat.
- 1:38:36And Kongyu's got his shirt, like wide open and I'm like, I can't
- 1:38:41even handle this. And I'm sitting in an air
- 1:38:42conditioned room in 2023, so I don't, I don't know how she was
- 1:38:46there to do it. Because she had not come into
- 1:38:51her like sexuality, like she's oh.
- 1:38:55My God, we have to talk about that too.
- 1:38:57Yeah. But anyway, so then they
- 1:38:58followed the basketball scene up with the fountain scene, friends
- 1:39:03style, and they make like a pack, like, oh, let's fight.
- 1:39:08Fighting, fighting. We're going to do well at the
- 1:39:10Coffee Prince. Let's make three times our
- 1:39:13investment or whatever it was that going you promised the
- 1:39:16grandmother. And they throw a coin in this
- 1:39:19giant fountain and then they all jump in the fountain.
- 1:39:23Yeah, it looks like so much fun, So refreshing.
- 1:39:27I'm not even bothering with the fact that they're in a public
- 1:39:29fountain romping around. I don't even care.
- 1:39:32I'm like, this is top. Like, this is cinema.
- 1:39:35You know what I'm saying? Like and the needle drops
- 1:39:39throughout the show. I wasn't concerned at all with
- 1:39:42the OSCI was concerned with the music that they had license,
- 1:39:45just music that was not created for the show specifically.
- 1:39:49And they had songs like This Will Be Everlasting Love from
- 1:39:52Natalie Cole, which I'm like how much did they pay for that?
- 1:39:55And then they had on the The Fountain scene, You and Me song
- 1:40:00from the Wannadies. Yeah.
- 1:40:02Oh my God, I love that song so much.
- 1:40:06So really fun sequences that kind of stick in your brain.
- 1:40:10They don't have much to do with the plot at all.
- 1:40:14This is just like music video fodder.
- 1:40:16But I love it. I love it.
- 1:40:20Yeah. So I don't know if you had any
- 1:40:24other scenes before we get to She turns into a girl for a
- 1:40:27night. Yes, I loved when they went,
- 1:40:32when they went to like the team event where Gongyu is selling
- 1:40:37apples or something like. That, Oh yes, the orchard.
- 1:40:40That whole, yeah, the orchard, that whole scene where they work
- 1:40:44together, collect the apples and they go into the water and many
- 1:40:48help is like, no, no, you're a girl.
- 1:40:51He was so cute. He was so cute when he found out
- 1:40:55she was a girl. So I loved that.
- 1:40:59And I also loved when the guys were living together and just
- 1:41:07how deplorable it. Was.
- 1:41:11And how you I. Mean.
- 1:41:14I thought it was worse than the like the parasite basement.
- 1:41:18It was worse. I was like, this was worse,
- 1:41:20Yeah. But you could see their
- 1:41:22personalities in that space with Sungi like being super clean and
- 1:41:28he had his like mosquito coil he's.
- 1:41:34Yes, it's good it. Was it was good?
- 1:41:37Yeah. She gets a makeover K drama
- 1:41:41trope. She gets a makeover for the art
- 1:41:44exhibition that she goes to with Aja she cousin.
- 1:41:48I forgot how horrendous she looks when she leaves the house
- 1:41:51and he picks. Her up.
- 1:41:52Oh my gosh, I wipe that out of my memory.
- 1:41:55I don't know how they let her leave the house like that.
- 1:42:00Yo, they don't like her. Like the mom, let me just say
- 1:42:04because of the way she left the house to go to the art
- 1:42:07exhibition, I think her mother and her little sister hate her.
- 1:42:12There is no way that they should have let her step foot looking
- 1:42:16like that. She looked like a clown.
- 1:42:18She. Did she literally look like a
- 1:42:21clown? And so he takes her to get
- 1:42:24spruced up and get a change of clothes and everything, and she
- 1:42:27comes down looking amazing. And I love she falls down the
- 1:42:32stairs, not fully. She just like, skips a step and
- 1:42:35he catches her from falling. And it's so she's all that.
- 1:42:37It hurts like, I'm like, Oh my God, a dream.
- 1:42:43Sequence. Yeah.
- 1:42:45It's it's good. And then obviously hijinks
- 1:42:48because Kongyu ends up attending the art exhibition instead of,
- 1:42:52you know, her just being there Incognito.
- 1:42:55She's now trying to avoid Kongyu and all stuff.
- 1:42:58Yeah, that's great. And he doesn't recognize her at
- 1:43:03all. I like at all, because that was
- 1:43:08a bit unbelievable for. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:43:14But I'm just like, wow are we? So, like, how strongly do we
- 1:43:20believe what we believe and do not challenge our thoughts?
- 1:43:24I don't. You're trying about suspension
- 1:43:25of disbelief? Or are you just talking about?
- 1:43:28For him. Oh, for him.
- 1:43:29OK. For him and even for me, I'm
- 1:43:33just like, OK, I'm seeing A and that's A and now you're telling
- 1:43:38me it's B and I'm like, no, that's A like.
- 1:43:42Come on Guy, open your eyes. Yeah, he's a blind.
- 1:43:48Just completely blind to her. Yeah, In episode six, he is
- 1:43:55already. I mean, he already likes her.
- 1:43:57He's already bothering her at work and just like a school kid
- 1:44:01with a crush, he's like ordering her around.
- 1:44:03She's getting frustrated. She blows her bangs up.
- 1:44:07Like she does like thing with her bangs and he's like, why
- 1:44:10don't you stop doing that? I need you to stop.
- 1:44:12He's so hot and bothered he's. So hot and bothered.
- 1:44:16And he aggressively drags her up to the rooftop And he got like,
- 1:44:22he's so hot and bothered. He looked like he got a fever.
- 1:44:25He just like, can I hug you? And she's super uncomfortable
- 1:44:29And she backs away from him and he says it's just like when they
- 1:44:32were doing the blind days. Come on, he doesn't bite, but he
- 1:44:36doesn't wait for her consent. He just grabs her and pulls her
- 1:44:39in for the hug. And I was like, okay, not not my
- 1:44:43favorite, but he's doing it to gauge his physical reaction to
- 1:44:47the hug to see if he's attracted to her.
- 1:44:50Because earlier he had hugged you do the second female lead
- 1:44:53and was like, oh thank God I'm still straight because I guess
- 1:44:56he felt something so he does it to her on time.
- 1:45:01And I love their reactions to after the hug.
- 1:45:05Yeah. Because she's like like Shook
- 1:45:08and grabbing the wall and shit to keep keep up and he does the
- 1:45:13same and he's just like clutching his heart like, oh
- 1:45:15shit, you know? I think that was the first time
- 1:45:20for her to sort of recognize that she feels different and.
- 1:45:29And the feelings may be strong. Uhhuh.
- 1:45:34Uhhuh. Grandma gets sick with stage 4
- 1:45:37stomach cancer around episode 7, and they did absolutely nothing
- 1:45:44with the stomach cancer with like that was just nothing.
- 1:45:50Almost like given that the elderly character would get
- 1:45:53sick. Yeah.
- 1:45:55So I didn't like that. I feel like that was half baked.
- 1:45:59And OK. Do you have thoughts on that?
- 1:46:03I'm just. Thinking I'm just thinking about
- 1:46:05the sequences of that, and I think they put it in there to
- 1:46:10show just how much Hanggill adores the women and his family.
- 1:46:17Because for Grandma and Mom, that guy would burn the earth
- 1:46:24for those two women. So to to get to see him obsess
- 1:46:29over her and his mom and just be like an adorable baby for them
- 1:46:37and for me, I'm just like, OK, yes, he loves them, but is he
- 1:46:41also overcompensating because his dad is lacking?
- 1:46:45Oh, I got nothing to add to that.
- 1:46:48We're going to move on because I was really Episode 8.
- 1:46:54She gets a kiss. She gets kissed by the cousin at
- 1:46:59his house. Ohh another iffy area.
- 1:47:02Iffy. Yeah.
- 1:47:03Iffy. Iffy.
- 1:47:05I did not. It's very surprising.
- 1:47:09And I could see why. She just ran out the house.
- 1:47:11Yeah, because there was no provocation.
- 1:47:14He just, like, came up on her. Yeah.
- 1:47:17Yeah. And, you know, obviously no
- 1:47:19consent or anything. And I was like, then later on in
- 1:47:22the episode, she's over at Komu's house.
- 1:47:27And he says you're gay, right? I'm not.
- 1:47:31So stop trying to seduce me. And I'm like, Oh my God.
- 1:47:39Brah, it's not that simple. I was like babe and then he.
- 1:47:44Borrowed the notebook like it's not that simple, it's.
- 1:47:47Not that simple. And then he gums up with that
- 1:47:51sworn brothers thing with a young name.
- 1:47:54Thing and then they get the he gets their ears pierced as like
- 1:47:57their sworn brothers oath. I don't even know.
- 1:48:00OK, OK. OK.
- 1:48:02But that brings up what we just, we talked about earlier about
- 1:48:07you know not having labels and all these things being normal
- 1:48:13and so he's trying to like find normal for him and and.
- 1:48:20Make it seem less without actually saying or accepting
- 1:48:25that he has stronger feelings. Then I think this is I have
- 1:48:33notes for episodes 9 through 12, but the night at the beach.
- 1:48:38Get out, get out. This is the Oh my God, this is K
- 1:48:42drama crack. This is the crackiest of crack.
- 1:48:46She there's like walking on the beach and she sort of go and
- 1:48:48saying like, what do you like about me?
- 1:48:50Which part of me do you find pretty?
- 1:48:52Of course I like you. dot, dot, dot as a sworn brother and she
- 1:48:56is really testing this man, OK. I thought that was just kind of
- 1:49:02rude of her, I thought because she knows what he thinks of her
- 1:49:07and she's still really flirty, like cannot keep it together.
- 1:49:12Does she know though? Because you know she did.
- 1:49:17She does say that I never like how can you look at me and say
- 1:49:22you like me? She she had some major.
- 1:49:25No, girl, we'll get to it because this is part of these
- 1:49:27sets of episodes, because I feel like it's we have to talk about
- 1:49:31the whole in time being like a doe idea and headlights through
- 1:49:36the whole thing. But he holds her hand.
- 1:49:41And intertwines the hands as lovers do.
- 1:49:43And then they watched. She's like, let's stay and watch
- 1:49:45the sunrise. And they spend the night out on
- 1:49:48the beach and she puts her head on his lap like she saw him do
- 1:49:53with you do the second female. She was definitely testing him,
- 1:49:57testing him. And then right, I'm like, girl
- 1:50:00is really testy. So then he gives her his
- 1:50:04cardigan. Real cute because it's, I guess,
- 1:50:06chilly up on the beach. I live in Florida.
- 1:50:08We don't got that. And then it's hot, like, take we
- 1:50:12have no cardigans at the beach. So as she's sleeping, he spoons
- 1:50:19her spoons with her. And I love this scene.
- 1:50:23It's very complicated. Like complicated, right?
- 1:50:29So he's cupping her hand in his and he's just crying as he
- 1:50:34kisses her head and he looks just terrified.
- 1:50:38At the realization that he loves a man and he's trying to
- 1:50:41reconcile this feeling, he goes missing for three days after the
- 1:50:44scene because he's just wrecked. He's spiraling.
- 1:50:50He has having an identity crisis, if you even have a
- 1:50:53mirror scene at his place after where he's like puts the shaving
- 1:50:57cream on his face and he's looking at himself in the mirror
- 1:51:00and he's just like, smears the mirror with shaving cream.
- 1:51:03He doesn't even want to look at himself.
- 1:51:05And. He struggled and I felt.
- 1:51:08Struggling. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:51:12What did you think of the beach scene and sort of the aftermath
- 1:51:15of that? It was very I loved it.
- 1:51:20It was very cute. It was very poignant.
- 1:51:25I think that the aftermath, though, was immature.
- 1:51:32Yes, I was thinking that too, because.
- 1:51:35Let's just put it in perspective.
- 1:51:36He's almost 30. Yeah.
- 1:51:41Yes, he's having a sexual identity crisis.
- 1:51:44He loves a man. But for him to go AWOL for three
- 1:51:48days? And he's a business owner and
- 1:51:52just leaves the coffee shop unattended for three days?
- 1:51:55Nope. Not receiving any calls.
- 1:51:57This is like teenager behavior. It is and that comes with.
- 1:52:03The immaturity of not having friends.
- 1:52:05You're building your own levels. Because it's not.
- 1:52:08It doesn't have friends. No I I.
- 1:52:11Like. There's that.
- 1:52:13I don't think he has a lot apart from his cousin.
- 1:52:16A lot of interaction, meaningful relationships with people.
- 1:52:22I thought it was very unfair to understand just how much work
- 1:52:28meant to her. And what she could do for her
- 1:52:31family and to take that away, so to lash out on her.
- 1:52:35I was pissed. Yeah, because he kept saying
- 1:52:38every other episode he was like, you're fired, you're done.
- 1:52:41Yeah, like you don't play people like a yo-yo, It was very
- 1:52:46annoying to watch. But I also understood him
- 1:52:51because. He was in an era of we don't go
- 1:52:55to therapist, see how he struggled to go to the
- 1:52:59psychiatrist and. And the psychiatrist was office
- 1:53:05dismal. Yes, that was a bad I was like.
- 1:53:08That was a terrible. Portrayal of therapy and going
- 1:53:12to a psychiatrist and the psychiatrist was like.
- 1:53:16How long have you been having fantasies of dressing as a woman
- 1:53:19and thoughts of doing this? And I'm like, what?
- 1:53:21Completely wrong. Yeah, completely wrong.
- 1:53:24Did. And I was like, but you'll be
- 1:53:26fine in a few days if you just take this medication.
- 1:53:28I'm like, what? What?
- 1:53:32That was the problematic, oh really problematic moment for
- 1:53:36me, because it's almost like you're saying pray the gay away,
- 1:53:40so take in a sense. Yeah.
- 1:53:41Or medicate the. Yeah, medicate, yeah.
- 1:53:44And that was that was crossing the line for me.
- 1:53:49However, I want to recognize the error and the lack of of empathy
- 1:53:57and knowledge and just respect. It was present, so I get it, but
- 1:54:03it's it's a hard scene to watch. It is very difficult to see
- 1:54:07those three days for him and especially him going to the
- 1:54:10psychiatrist. Cohen Chen says.
- 1:54:13At this point, I'd rather be his good friend as a man than get
- 1:54:16turned down as a woman. As a woman.
- 1:54:19And that's so heartbreaking because she has never gotten to
- 1:54:25be a woman. This is someone who is the
- 1:54:28primary breadwinner of her home. She's.
- 1:54:31Interroginous takes over. She has, I guess, masculine
- 1:54:34features if you want to call them fat, Masculine, but OK,
- 1:54:39she's not traditionally feminine.
- 1:54:41She's not traditionally feminine presenting correct era.
- 1:54:45And even in flashback sequences of her as a child, she still had
- 1:54:49short hair. She was still dressing a little
- 1:54:51more like a tomboy, to use the term in the My Drama List
- 1:54:56synopsis. And I genuinely felt bad for her
- 1:55:02in her struggle, up to a point, because around this time when
- 1:55:06he's going through it. And he's not getting any help.
- 1:55:10And she says she has this pity party.
- 1:55:15It just has many pity parties. She's constantly crying.
- 1:55:18And I have in my notes. I'm so sick of her blubbering,
- 1:55:23You can't I say in my notes, you can't start a relationship based
- 1:55:26on a lie. You have to tell the truth.
- 1:55:29You have to open up and be vulnerable.
- 1:55:30Let them in. And she wants to have her cake
- 1:55:33and eat it too. The entire drama, and I don't
- 1:55:36mean coffee prints as a whole, I mean the drama of this section
- 1:55:41of the show. Their issues would be wrapped up
- 1:55:46if you just manned up, no pun intended, and told him the truth
- 1:55:51that she's a woman. I honestly didn't get the
- 1:55:55spinning wheels of that section of the show because to me.
- 1:56:02She's suffering. He's suffering.
- 1:56:05What's gonna change? Like something has to give.
- 1:56:09Yes. Oh my gosh.
- 1:56:11And I love that when he found out and finally when, you know,
- 1:56:16they move forward, he called her out on it.
- 1:56:18I think two or three times. Oh, I have the direct quotes
- 1:56:21here. I don't worry.
- 1:56:22We'll get to it in a second because we still have a couple
- 1:56:25of things before the shit hits the fan, because I love when she
- 1:56:28says in this pity party. With the cousin there, she says.
- 1:56:32But look at me, I'm not a man or a woman.
- 1:56:35I'm too scared to tell him. And that's something that the
- 1:56:41cousin brings up later when shit hits the fan and people are
- 1:56:44trying to reconcile the two of them by saying what they know of
- 1:56:47the story. And the cousin says she doesn't
- 1:56:50even know who she is. There you go.
- 1:56:54And it's like, that's really profound, That's really deep.
- 1:56:58She's very young. And she's been put in a box for
- 1:57:02her whole life, which is you're not good enough.
- 1:57:06You don't look the right part to be a woman.
- 1:57:09You're not feminine presenting. And so you're just going to get
- 1:57:12put in the box of you're a boy, we're going to consider you a
- 1:57:16man. And it's this whole complexity
- 1:57:21of not being wanted. Of not knowing how to be a
- 1:57:25woman. What is femininity can is she
- 1:57:27still a woman even though she's dressing like this and acting
- 1:57:30like this and has these jobs and all this stuff?
- 1:57:32It's very interesting. I have a question.
- 1:57:35Yeah. So she was a tomboy with her
- 1:57:39dad, right? You see that sequence of of her
- 1:57:43playing with her dad and her dad playing with her as if he's a
- 1:57:46son or she's a son. But when she grows older, is
- 1:57:51she? Forced into this box that she's
- 1:57:57in, I think so in order to be able to provide for.
- 1:58:00Her family, I think it's a little bit of both that she's
- 1:58:03comfortable wearing these clothes and with the short hair,
- 1:58:07that's fine. Maybe she's comfortable not
- 1:58:10wearing makeup. That's totally fine.
- 1:58:11But I also think it's that she was forced into it to provide
- 1:58:15for her family and to. Provide for her family.
- 1:58:17Patriarchal stand in for her dad who died early and now she has
- 1:58:22to provide for her family. So absolutely, it's a little bit
- 1:58:25of both to me. It's it's it's really a
- 1:58:28conversation on society. Oh yeah, for me because.
- 1:58:34Back then, you may be working at a cafe, or you may be like a bar
- 1:58:39host or a waitress. You cannot excuse the fact that
- 1:58:44she had very little options to go with because.
- 1:58:47She had very little options. She was very young, in her 20s.
- 1:58:51She did not have a college education, she repeatedly said.
- 1:58:55She had no dreams, She had no talent.
- 1:58:57She didn't do well in school, so there's no recourse for her
- 1:59:00other than to do these. Dirty jobs for essentially these
- 1:59:04jobs that are meant for men with no education, Men who are young
- 1:59:10like part time, which. Probably, which probably paid
- 1:59:14more. Yes, which probably paid more
- 1:59:18than if she was saying that she's a woman and she wants
- 1:59:21these jobs because of the pay gap.
- 1:59:24It's completely unfair. It is unfair.
- 1:59:28So I I understand her, but I my issue with her is when she saw
- 1:59:35that it was getting serious. Yes, she she has gotten the same
- 1:59:41courage that Hangill worked through.
- 1:59:45Yes, to speak up, but she didn't get that courage.
- 1:59:48Didn't. And then we get to the kiss in
- 1:59:50the coffee shop, which is iconic and.
- 1:59:55I don't know what else to say about that.
- 1:59:58Because it's amazing. It's amazing.
- 2:00:00He comes in hot. He's like is all over her.
- 2:00:03And I think this is that part where and when they were
- 2:00:05rewatching it now closer to the present day, I think she was
- 2:00:11grabbing his shirt or something in that scene and I was like,
- 2:00:14like, that's a lot. But he says this line, I like
- 2:00:17you. I don't care if you're a man or
- 2:00:19an alien anymore. See.
- 2:00:24OK. It's an iconic line.
- 2:00:28People keep saying it in every variety show whenever the skits
- 2:00:32comes up. Was it necessary to say Alien?
- 2:00:38I don't know. I don't know.
- 2:00:41I get the sentiment is what he's saying, that I don't care who
- 2:00:45you are, you're just you and I like you.
- 2:00:47That's fine. To compare being in love with a
- 2:00:52man to being in love with an alien.
- 2:00:54That was a bit. Hasn't aged well at all.
- 2:00:57But no, it's 2007. But people still like that line.
- 2:01:04They like to drive. Yeah, I I'm just shocked at it.
- 2:01:07Yeah, I just love the kiss. That's a.
- 2:01:09Kiss. I just distinctly remember
- 2:01:12watching this kiss in 2011 or so when I first watched show and I
- 2:01:16was like, Oh my God, I think I I was rebound rewinding it.
- 2:01:20I was like, I gotta see it again.
- 2:01:21I gotta see it again. Yeah, it's steamy.
- 2:01:26It's good. It's spicy.
- 2:01:29Then shit hits the fan. The poser boyfriend who is my
- 2:01:34perfect stranger dude, He spills a beans.
- 2:01:38He spills a blabbermouth. He's such a blabbermouth because
- 2:01:41he thinks that she told him the truth when he gets to work that
- 2:01:44morning, but she chickens out. And then he starts talking about
- 2:01:47her as if Kungyu knows the truth, the intensity of that
- 2:01:53moment. Yo, the intensity.
- 2:01:57That's why I'm like, go for the best actor.
- 2:01:59Oh my God. And I hate her reaction.
- 2:02:03I do hate on Chan's reaction because she can't look him in
- 2:02:06the eye, which fine, I feel like that's a cultural thing that
- 2:02:09like if you are at fault, if you are, you know, have a lower
- 2:02:13position, if you're sorry, you don't make eye contact with
- 2:02:16somebody. That's rude.
- 2:02:18Yeah, so fine, she doesn't look him in the eye, but then she
- 2:02:21doesn't say anything. She's so ashamed that she
- 2:02:26doesn't say anything. She doesn't offer any
- 2:02:27explanation. She doesn't say I'm sorry, even
- 2:02:30he's got nothing to go off of. And again he goes AWOL.
- 2:02:33He goes driving down the street, thinking back on all the moments
- 2:02:37they've had together and how he should have seen it coming that
- 2:02:40she was a girl the whole time. And that's his bad, because you
- 2:02:45should have challenged your thoughts.
- 2:02:47You should have heard her when she first said.
- 2:02:51Her I D and started with two. But no.
- 2:02:54You're like it's a you know what?
- 2:02:57He had every right to be angry. He.
- 2:02:59Did have every right to be angry, I feel, And his world
- 2:03:03came crashing down in a very key drama fashion.
- 2:03:06But I love his line when he's talking to the cousin later,
- 2:03:10because the cousin knew the whole time he got mad that the
- 2:03:12cousin was lying to him too, feeding into the ruse.
- 2:03:17And Kony says, will the world end if I find out she's a girl?
- 2:03:23And I'm like, he got points. He's got points, OK?
- 2:03:30He says to her later. Tell me this isn't true.
- 2:03:32Tell me you didn't lie to me for months.
- 2:03:34You don't do that to someone you love.
- 2:03:41OK, I'm going to watch this again when we finish because
- 2:03:44those lies. Impactful.
- 2:03:47I hope you do one of those posts that you do.
- 2:03:50With like with the lines, the quotes.
- 2:03:52Yeah, with the quotes, because it's impactful.
- 2:03:55I'll do it. I'll do it, don't worry.
- 2:03:56But he, I mean, they talk to that each other scattered
- 2:04:01throughout the episode, because of course, they're just angsty
- 2:04:04and upset, and he has every right to be, he says later.
- 2:04:08You were selfish. You didn't care what I was going
- 2:04:11through. You didn't tell me, even when I
- 2:04:13told you that I like you, even though you're a guy.
- 2:04:17So I love that he hits on the the selfishness of her, not
- 2:04:22telling him that he she didn't consider how he'd feel.
- 2:04:28And then he does it like this is inexcusable.
- 2:04:31But he, like comes on her and they have this aggressive kiss
- 2:04:34in the coffee house. And then he pulls away and says
- 2:04:37I like you better as a man. That was that.
- 2:04:41That was the moment. That was the moment for me,
- 2:04:46because I told you I was in a very special space.
- 2:04:50That was the moment where I decided that no matter how angry
- 2:04:56I am, I will not intentionally hurt someone.
- 2:05:01And I've lived by that, like, forever.
- 2:05:06And so there was a moment in my life where.
- 2:05:09My dad did that to me and I remember having a panic attack
- 2:05:14because I was like, you did not need my dad and my sister shout
- 2:05:20out to my sister. I love her but and my dad,
- 2:05:24sorry, but I was like, you don't need to intentionally hurt
- 2:05:30people the way you know it would hurt them the most.
- 2:05:34Right. And I could not forgive that
- 2:05:36moment. Yeah, it's very.
- 2:05:41Below the belt, very below the belt.
- 2:05:44For him to do that. And then he says what do we have
- 2:05:46now? Do we have trust?
- 2:05:48You don't know what I gave up in my life to have you.
- 2:05:50You've been weighing your choices because you didn't want
- 2:05:53to get hurt. Oh my gosh.
- 2:05:56Vulnerability. Fuck yeah.
- 2:06:00It's so much. It's so much.
- 2:06:03But they make up, they get over it.
- 2:06:06They get through it. They.
- 2:06:08You know, reconcile. And then we get a bunch of
- 2:06:11episodes where they're together and it's very sweet, even
- 2:06:15sweeter than the other episodes that came before it.
- 2:06:18They're very giddy with each other, especially him.
- 2:06:20I feel like Kong, Yu's character, is just smitten with
- 2:06:25her. Anytime he sees her, he's just
- 2:06:27like, like, it's so cute to see them.
- 2:06:32And then we get those final episodes.
- 2:06:34Where is he? Or is he not going to go back to
- 2:06:36New York? Let me just say.
- 2:06:38New York has been a problem in K dramas since Time Immemorium.
- 2:06:44OK, this is not a business proposal.
- 2:06:46Recent thing. He goes to New York and leaves
- 2:06:49her and there's a time jump. No baby like New York was a
- 2:06:52threat since the early 2000s. It's always been in the ether.
- 2:06:58And he ends up deciding, deciding not to go back to New
- 2:07:01York and design toys. Because he's found new meaning
- 2:07:09to life. He just found new, meaning new
- 2:07:12fulfillment in what he's doing at the coffee shop, which is.
- 2:07:15That's the word. Really interesting concept to
- 2:07:18give up on a dream because you found a new one.
- 2:07:21Yes, Yeah. Yes.
- 2:07:24Oh, my gosh. OK, random.
- 2:07:27I was talking about men that I admire.
- 2:07:31And why I admire them. And the common thread was one of
- 2:07:36these points where you have one dream and you're just like, you
- 2:07:40know what, I'm going to lay it down and go after this one
- 2:07:43because I I love that. I'm like, ooh, let's put that on
- 2:07:48my vision board. Let's go.
- 2:07:50I mean, we're leaving out the fact that he is enamored with on
- 2:07:54time and wants to stay with her, doesn't want to do long distance
- 2:07:56or break up. True but.
- 2:08:01Does he need to design toys anymore to feel something?
- 2:08:04No. No, Yeah.
- 2:08:06No. I was devastated when he tells
- 2:08:11the grandmother and the family that Unchan is actually a girl
- 2:08:14and that they're dating. And their reaction?
- 2:08:17The reaction? From grandma.
- 2:08:19From grandma was shocked. Fair, but grandma was vicious.
- 2:08:24Oh my gosh. So one of the worst blowout
- 2:08:28reactions, and it hurts and so much.
- 2:08:30I mean, it hurt me and I'm just a casual audience member
- 2:08:35watching this after the fact, but it was very sad.
- 2:08:43Oh my God. But then you two and the cousin
- 2:08:46who have had their ups and downs, they're back together,
- 2:08:48She gets pregnant and then she proposes to to him that they get
- 2:08:56married. Well, he proposed to her and she
- 2:09:01was noncommittal, you know, with the, I don't know, cheese stick
- 2:09:06or whatever it was. And then she comes back and
- 2:09:10proposes to him, and that was beautiful.
- 2:09:13I know the girlies were up in a bunch about it, but it was.
- 2:09:19I think mean the girlies were up in a bunch.
- 2:09:22They hated that scene. They're like, why should a girl,
- 2:09:25Why should a girl propose? It should always be the guy.
- 2:09:30And OK. Babes, So my thing is the the
- 2:09:35show is groundbreaking in all kinds of ways.
- 2:09:37So many ways. And they had set up earlier that
- 2:09:41her character doesn't want to get married.
- 2:09:43She's not about that life. She's a free spirit, whatever
- 2:09:45the hell. And.
- 2:09:48I feel, and I've said this in another episode, I can't
- 2:09:50remember which one might have been searched. www.withyouthat.
- 2:09:54That's a deal breaker in a relationship, right?
- 2:09:58When one person wants to get married and the other person
- 2:10:01doesn't, on moral, ethical, whatever grounds that they want,
- 2:10:06that's a deal breaker. To me.
- 2:10:08That's spells the end of the relationship and the fact that
- 2:10:14she sort of works through it. And gets over the trauma because
- 2:10:17her mom's been married four times.
- 2:10:19And, like, it's this whole thing complex that she has about
- 2:10:23getting married. She plucks up the courage to
- 2:10:26actually propose to him. And then she knows that it's
- 2:10:29something that he's wanted for many years.
- 2:10:31Talk about being together for nine years and not getting
- 2:10:33married. I'm like, that was not on him.
- 2:10:35He would have gotten married long ago, but it was on.
- 2:10:37Her. That's true.
- 2:10:40And. You know him sort of cheating on
- 2:10:42her. Her definitely cheating on him.
- 2:10:44They've come so far and it's very good.
- 2:10:49I can't understand why it's it's a character development for her,
- 2:10:54yeah, to propose. I would.
- 2:10:57I would like to say it may not be a deal breaker if you find
- 2:11:02the right guy when you're thinking about Su young from
- 2:11:06Girls' Generation and her guy and who's saying.
- 2:11:10Him saying and interviews like I want her to have the success,
- 2:11:15all the success she wants, and the work she wants to do and
- 2:11:19whatnot. Like, yes, I'd like to get
- 2:11:21married, but her dreams are just as important.
- 2:11:24I died. Oh my God, I love that man.
- 2:11:27But yeah. Right.
- 2:11:28I think what I said on the search www.episodewasthat,
- 2:11:31somebody has to compromise. Yes.
- 2:11:36Yes, you did say that, I remember.
- 2:11:37That, and yeah, that's a real life compromise with that
- 2:11:41celebrity. That's true.
- 2:11:44But in the show we also see, we see him compromise.
- 2:11:49We see everyone compromise. Yeah.
- 2:11:51Which is so beautiful. Because that's very realistic,
- 2:11:56yeah. But Kong You's character fumbles
- 2:11:59a bag in the final couple of episodes because he gets
- 2:12:02marriage hungry. And he gets approval from his
- 2:12:08entire family. He convinces his whole family
- 2:12:11that Untine is the perfect daughterinlaw.
- 2:12:14The co-owner is talking, talking her up to the grandmother.
- 2:12:18He's like, you don't even realize what a Jemmy you have
- 2:12:20here because she's better than him and all this stuff.
- 2:12:24So he proposes to her, puts a ring on her finger.
- 2:12:28She thinks it's just a promise. Ring, A couple ring.
- 2:12:35And she assumes and talking with her little sister and stuff,
- 2:12:40that they would get married in 4-5 years or something.
- 2:12:45He's shocked, shocked because he wants to get married now, like
- 2:12:53in the next year. And she's all about I need to
- 2:12:56work on myself. I have this.
- 2:12:59I finally have something I want to do, something I'm good at,
- 2:13:03something I'm interested in, and that's becoming a great barista.
- 2:13:07I want to be the best barista ever.
- 2:13:09I want to study this. I this is my dream now and to
- 2:13:13provide for my family on my own terms and stuff.
- 2:13:17And he's over here like, I swear I'll take responsibility for
- 2:13:20your family. And that was something that the
- 2:13:22sister was bringing up to. She was like, is he going to buy
- 2:13:24us a house before you move to New York?
- 2:13:27I know. I'm like, bitch, what entitled.
- 2:13:29Entitled little brat. What makes you think that her
- 2:13:32boyfriend should buy you a house?
- 2:13:35It was like. Exactly.
- 2:13:37And Unchan says in that moment, responsibility.
- 2:13:41How? For how long?
- 2:13:44It's better not to make promises you can't keep.
- 2:13:46Will you live forever and never die?
- 2:13:49My father said he'd take responsibility for our family
- 2:13:52forever, but he couldn't do that.
- 2:13:55A person can't take responsibility over another
- 2:13:57person. You can only take responsibility
- 2:14:00for yourself, for yourself, until you can accomplish.
- 2:14:03Until I can accomplish things on my own, I won't marry.
- 2:14:09You know, I feel. The ground, I feel the ground
- 2:14:11shaking. I feel it shaking because this
- 2:14:15is so very. Amazing of them to write into
- 2:14:21her character, and it felt very genuine for her to have this
- 2:14:24pride over her life and this fierce independence.
- 2:14:28Of course she does. She's been doing this on her own
- 2:14:31since she was 16, and why should she be a kept woman?
- 2:14:35Why should he have to provide for her family?
- 2:14:37She can do it on her own and all of these things.
- 2:14:42I was watching with my mom and at this scene she was like.
- 2:14:48You see, This is why I tell you, you have to make your own money.
- 2:14:51Go to school, start working, make your money before you go
- 2:14:55and do this. Laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh.
- 2:14:58I laughed my head off, but it was so important, yeah, to to
- 2:15:02learn that. It's very important to.
- 2:15:05I think in today's day and age, there's so many horror stories
- 2:15:08of. You just don't have any skills
- 2:15:11to survive on your own and then you get stuck in a relationship
- 2:15:15that is providing for you and a lifestyle that you can't
- 2:15:18maintain on your own and. And knowing his behavior, oh,
- 2:15:23his anger issues, he can just take it away and then what?
- 2:15:28Right. Cuz he was threatening her with
- 2:15:29her job for half the show. And so she was like, uh oh,
- 2:15:33we're not marrying. And me just like live as your
- 2:15:36wife. Like I want.
- 2:15:37I have dreams. I want things I want to do.
- 2:15:39I have things I want to do. And I was like, damn mad
- 2:15:42respect. I'll tell you what though.
- 2:15:44When I first watched this in 2011, I was in a different spot
- 2:15:50in my life. Yes, I had a job.
- 2:15:51Yes, I was educated. But holy hell, I was on Kongyu's
- 2:15:55side during this whole thing. I was like, why isn't she
- 2:16:00marrying him? I don't understand why they're
- 2:16:03waiting. I don't understand why she wants
- 2:16:05to become a barista. Of all the I was like really
- 2:16:10upset with her not accepting the proposal right away And to like
- 2:16:17watching it today, I'm like, maybe I'm just.
- 2:16:19In a different. Place in my life.
- 2:16:21I'm like, absolutely fucking lutely.
- 2:16:23Why would she get married now? She's so young.
- 2:16:26She has so much she wants to do. Let her study coffee, whatever
- 2:16:30the fuck she wants. I don't care It it made no sense
- 2:16:34for him to want to marry her after three months.
- 2:16:37Together three months that they've known each other.
- 2:16:41But sometimes I feel like, did he wants to marry her or do he
- 2:16:47want to have sex with her because they have that scene.
- 2:16:51Did have that talk to me? They did have that scene where
- 2:16:57he's like, yeah, and we'll live in New York together and you'll
- 2:17:00go to Chelsea and we'll have pizza.
- 2:17:02And he was painting this whole picture, which is so funny
- 2:17:06because he was telling handsome like once you marry, you want
- 2:17:11that person to live according to your.
- 2:17:14They have that conversation. But for him, he's like, oh.
- 2:17:22Wait, wait, she says. Are we getting married?
- 2:17:24He's like, what are you saying? We have to get married before we
- 2:17:29live together, sleep together? So what?
- 2:17:32This was a little jarring for me because this goes into first of
- 2:17:38all, she's very naive about anything having to do with
- 2:17:41relationship. Anything sexual just kind of
- 2:17:43blows her mind and. I mean earlier when they and
- 2:17:48that when the second leads, the second couple announces that
- 2:17:51they're pregnant, She's very happy for them, but she's like,
- 2:17:55I wonder how they got pregnant and they're not even married.
- 2:17:59No, I. And I was like, so Kongyu's
- 2:18:03characters, like, looks at her and she's like, oh, right.
- 2:18:06And she's like, are you fucking for real?
- 2:18:11Be fucking for real. But, but, but, but, but.
- 2:18:17Gonyu has lived in New York. He's part of the, you know,
- 2:18:21cosmopolitan life, if you will. Cousin is 32.
- 2:18:26He ain't playing no games either.
- 2:18:28But culturally there was still, and I'm sure there still is this
- 2:18:35vibe culturally that you don't get pregnant before you're
- 2:18:38married. Right, right.
- 2:18:40And that's why, you know, celebrities have these shotgun
- 2:18:43weddings. And so I understand how she was
- 2:18:49thinking. And I watched it when I was 18,
- 2:18:51so I I was just on that train of what?
- 2:18:56You mean we're going to have sex and we're not married.
- 2:18:59Okay, but also how presumptive of them to be like.
- 2:19:03Yeah, we'll just live together in New York together.
- 2:19:05And they just started their relationship like, he's like,
- 2:19:10let's live together. We've been together for 72
- 2:19:13hours. Sir, I think we should take it a
- 2:19:15little slower because he was very quick about it and he never
- 2:19:21gave. He never had this conversation
- 2:19:23with her before about what stage are we at?
- 2:19:26Do you want to? Do you even want to live with
- 2:19:28me? He was leading the relationship,
- 2:19:31the girlies are looking for leaders and he was leading.
- 2:19:34What can you say? He was dragging her along like a
- 2:19:37horse behind the cart and she put the brakes on that and she
- 2:19:41was like, no, I wanna do the first of all.
- 2:19:45First of all, she was like, we're not gonna live together
- 2:19:49before we're married, #1 #2 sexist.
- 2:19:55I can't believe you just wanna have sex and then not get
- 2:19:58married. It was like very.
- 2:20:00A conservative of her. But also, I understood where she
- 2:20:03was coming from. I was like, yeah, yeah, I can
- 2:20:05kind of see why she was like, what?
- 2:20:07And then third of all, when she finally realizes her barista
- 2:20:10dream, she's like, we're not getting married before I
- 2:20:12complete all this stuff that I want to do.
- 2:20:15Yeah. So again, he was.
- 2:20:18And then he's like making plans without her, which got her
- 2:20:21really upset. Yes, she was like that.
- 2:20:25Was the whole thing. Yes, how can you do this to me
- 2:20:28without even telling me? Yeah.
- 2:20:32Communication, Communication. Communication.
- 2:20:34Communication. And he couldn't understand why
- 2:20:36she was so upset because to him, he's like, giving her this
- 2:20:40Cinderella life. Yeah.
- 2:20:42And she's like, I don't want to be Cinderella.
- 2:20:45I want to be a con Chan. Uh.
- 2:20:47Huh. Uh huh.
- 2:20:49So I think now. Back in 2011 when I watched
- 2:20:52watched this, I was like, she should totally just get married
- 2:20:55to him and they live together and that's the end of it.
- 2:20:59I think now I'm of two minds of it because she was so young,
- 2:21:03right? Just 20 something years old.
- 2:21:05And he's 29, almost 30. And I'm like, first of all, if a
- 2:21:11man wants to marry you and you love each other, just get
- 2:21:14married. There shouldn't be this giant
- 2:21:17engagement that's years long. Second of all, if you want to be
- 2:21:22a cap woman and not have to work and grind and hustle, more power
- 2:21:27to you just get that bag, sweetie.
- 2:21:29Like marry the man. So that's why.
- 2:21:32I mean, I'm like, I'm up two minds of it.
- 2:21:34I think generally. I was definitely supportive of
- 2:21:37her wanting to not get married right away and become a barista
- 2:21:41and all that stuff. Because she never done anything
- 2:21:44remotely like that. He's already studied, he's
- 2:21:46already been abroad. He's just more cultured than she
- 2:21:50is, and she doesn't have all of that experience.
- 2:21:53Not only that he's gotten to live life for him and she has
- 2:21:57lived life for her family this whole time and for the first
- 2:22:01time she's getting to live life for her and it it's it is her
- 2:22:07first relationship and her first time falling in love and.
- 2:22:12Like there's just so many factors like.
- 2:22:15Let her breathe, please. Let her breathe.
- 2:22:17And back then, when I was watching it, I was like,
- 2:22:20definitely don't get married right now.
- 2:22:22Oh, really? Because.
- 2:22:23Oh yeah, Because you can. You have an opportunity to live
- 2:22:28out your dreams. So do it.
- 2:22:31And it's nice to have someone encouraging you along the way,
- 2:22:35but you don't necessarily need it because it's your dream.
- 2:22:40Go after it like I also. Feel like in the Even when I was
- 2:22:47watching it initially, and even now, I feel like we have
- 2:22:50culturally way different stances on what a marriage entails.
- 2:22:56And to me, back in the day and even now, I'm like if she gets
- 2:22:59married, she can still study, she can still become a barista.
- 2:23:02It's not even a thing. But perhaps we're missing the
- 2:23:06part that if they get married, she's going to have to care for
- 2:23:09this man. This manchild is playing with.
- 2:23:11Legos and household, yeah. And his family and her family
- 2:23:16have. Responsibilities and cultural
- 2:23:18duties and all this. Stuff.
- 2:23:20She was seeing all that and she's like, I don't want to do
- 2:23:23that, right? Now and just get that as a I.
- 2:23:26Literally, yeah. I literally just finished doing
- 2:23:30that with my family. What are you talking about?
- 2:23:33And you want me to jump into it again?
- 2:23:35No. And that's very much the space
- 2:23:37I'm in personally right now. With I'm living my life.
- 2:23:41My kids, aka my siblings, have graduated.
- 2:23:44I don't have to care for them anymore.
- 2:23:46Da da da da. It's now about me.
- 2:23:49There's no way I'm going to take that responsibility, jump into
- 2:23:52it head first, yeah. Yeah, so a lot of context that I
- 2:23:57feel like we might be missing or glossing over when we say she
- 2:24:01should just get married or she should just wait and then get
- 2:24:03married, whatever the case is. Now we get a time jump of two
- 2:24:06years. She goes to Italy to become a
- 2:24:08barista and I will tell you, I remember vividly watching the
- 2:24:14scene and I remember this scene where she comes back.
- 2:24:18And and she's fam presenting. She's fed well, a little more
- 2:24:21fam presenting. I still don't think she's like
- 2:24:23not in a skirt. She's not.
- 2:24:24Doesn't have a full face of makeup or anything.
- 2:24:27That's true. She's.
- 2:24:28Quite a nice balance. She still have short hair, but
- 2:24:32it's shoulder length now. Yeah.
- 2:24:34You know, it's like a nice evolution of her.
- 2:24:38It seems like this is where she wanted to be over time.
- 2:24:42Not only. Yeah, I I loved that that she
- 2:24:47didn't come show up in a dress with heels and and all of that.
- 2:24:52I loved that she found her style that still speaks to her.
- 2:24:58And just the new way she wants to move through the world.
- 2:25:02If you, the glow up was real. The glow up was real, yeah.
- 2:25:06And the way he looked at her. Oh yeah.
- 2:25:10I think the only scene that we skipped was the sex scene that
- 2:25:14happened right before she left for Italy.
- 2:25:18That she. Are we talking, are we talking
- 2:25:19about the dream sequence or are the actual sex scene?
- 2:25:23No. The actual sex scene, OK, which
- 2:25:26they didn't show anything, I mean.
- 2:25:27You know, it's OK, drama, but that scene where she goes over
- 2:25:30to his house and he's hot and bothered, he like wants her, she
- 2:25:33doesn't get it. She put his hands on her and she
- 2:25:36freaked out. And that night or something she
- 2:25:40calls him and she goes over late at night and he had was like put
- 2:25:44the kibosh on anything coming, coming close to her and stuff
- 2:25:48because he wants her and she stays over intentionally.
- 2:25:52He's like, please leave. If you, if you don't leave right
- 2:25:57now, I'm not sending you home. You have your face in your hands
- 2:26:04because Carol, this scene is so again iconic for cock because
- 2:26:11she puts her little foot in, he locks her out without her shoes.
- 2:26:14She's like, I need my shoes. Whatever, open up and she puts
- 2:26:17her little foot in and she puts her head in and she makes her
- 2:26:20way inside And he had just warned.
- 2:26:22He's like, please be warned. And boom, he like got her up
- 2:26:29against the door. Whoa, whoa.
- 2:26:32When he put. Her up against the door, I was
- 2:26:33like, I remember screaming the first time I saw.
- 2:26:40Yeah, on the second watch I wasn't screaming, but the first
- 2:26:42time I watched it, I remember screaming.
- 2:26:44I've never been able to watch that scene again just because I
- 2:26:48can't. I can't do it because I'm just
- 2:26:50like. I lose my shit.
- 2:26:54Too many emotions, yeah. Yeah, I lost my shit and I lost
- 2:26:59my shit now in 2023 when I rewatched it.
- 2:27:03What a quality, like scene. That was a long time coming for
- 2:27:07this couple and all of a sudden she got so much courage.
- 2:27:11Yeah, I agree. Yeah, it was.
- 2:27:14It was really good. And you could tell like she
- 2:27:17didn't know what she was doing. She was like, she was like new.
- 2:27:25It was her first time and so he had to take leadership.
- 2:27:31But she just, you could see her moving according to what she was
- 2:27:36feeling. Yeah, it wasn't all one sided.
- 2:27:41I would. Say it wasn't all one sided.
- 2:27:43Yeah, yeah. But before we move on, we forgot
- 2:27:47something. One of my.
- 2:27:49Favorite scenes ever, oh God, ever is when he calls her and
- 2:27:58he's like, what are you, are you sleeping?
- 2:28:01And she's like, no, he's like, can you come over?
- 2:28:04And she goes over and she's sitting on the couch eating
- 2:28:07chicken and he's like, how was your day?
- 2:28:10And and and then she gets pissed off, like, why are you asking me
- 2:28:13all these things? And finally she's like, you
- 2:28:16weren't there. I kind of missed you.
- 2:28:18He's like. I missed you.
- 2:28:19Yeah, because he was. He was like and.
- 2:28:22Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 2:28:26That whole couch sequence was the most loving thing for me.
- 2:28:33Top top three loving moments for me in the show because it was so
- 2:28:38underrated. Very common to do in real life.
- 2:28:44And yes, I only touched me. We were talking earlier about
- 2:28:48how this show was not realistic. What's realistic is them
- 2:28:53together. Yes.
- 2:28:55Their scenes together, their chemistry, the way it's so easy
- 2:28:59and way it's so hard sometimes for them.
- 2:29:02The look on Kongyu's face when he's giddy about something that
- 2:29:06she said. Or they're on the phone.
- 2:29:09And she surprises him and says, I love you, I love you, I love
- 2:29:11you over and over again. And he was standing on his couch
- 2:29:14and he like collapses. He's like because she shakes him
- 2:29:18up so much by saying I love you and.
- 2:29:21Then he decides I'm gonna be petty or pissed and he's like,
- 2:29:24let's not get it twisted. I love you more.
- 2:29:27Hang up. That shit is what's realistic
- 2:29:32and what's addicting to watch. Yeah.
- 2:29:36OK, I think I've come to the end of my notes.
- 2:29:38Did you have anything else you wanted to add about?
- 2:29:40That was the last thing I wanted to add to this.
- 2:29:44Is so much fun. I just want everyone to watch
- 2:29:48the show. I do too.
- 2:29:49If you haven't watched coffee prints and you've gotten this
- 2:29:51far and we've spoiled it for you, please just experience it
- 2:29:54for yourself. It is such a wonderful
- 2:29:58experience and despite of some of the stuff that I was harping
- 2:30:02on earlier, it is a top tier cave drama.
- 2:30:05It is. Did so well internationally and
- 2:30:09in Korea. Everybody loved it.
- 2:30:11Everybody still loves it. And just watch it.
- 2:30:15Just watch it. Don't let the 2007 of it, like,
- 2:30:18get you, get you down. Exactly.
- 2:30:23All right, Carol. Is there anything you'd like to
- 2:30:25plug before we get out of here? So I know you do K dramatics,
- 2:30:27you do K drama musings. Yes, please follow me on K drama
- 2:30:32music, K dramas, musings. OK On Instagram.
- 2:30:36I'm sure I'll plug it in somewhere on socials and tag.
- 2:30:41Jessica, Jessica, thank you so much for having me back.
