- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and you have made it to the end
- 0:16of another week. It is Friday, it's the 15th of
- 0:19August and here we are. I wonder what we can possibly
- 0:23do. I know.
- 0:24Let's read together a proverb. That's right.
- 0:28Let's open up the book of Proverbs and get some of that OG
- 0:32wisdom for us today. What a joy that is.
- 0:36And hopefully we can even carry something, some element of
- 0:39truth, some element of teaching with us all the way through the
- 0:43weekend that it can shape the way that we choose to be in an
- 0:47interaction. And this is me, my last day in
- 0:50Canberra before I board a flight to come home, hip hip, Hooray,
- 0:55and be back with my family. I hope that you get to be with
- 0:58your family today or over the weekend and that you have a
- 1:01wonderful time. But before we get on with the
- 1:03weekend, before we get on with our Fridays, let U.S.
- 1:07Open up God's Word together as we read Proverbs 15, 15 to 21.
- 1:24For the despondent, every day brings trouble.
- 1:28For the happy heart, life is a continual feast.
- 1:33Better to have little with fear for the Lord than to have great
- 1:37treasure and inner turmoil. A bowl of vegetables with
- 1:42someone you love is better than steak with someone you hate.
- 1:47A hot tempered person starts fights.
- 1:50A cool tempered person stops them.
- 1:54A lazy person's way is blocked with briars, but the path of the
- 1:58upright is an open highway. Sensible children bring joy to
- 2:05their father. Foolish children despise their
- 2:08mother. Foolishness brings joy to those
- 2:13with no sense. A sensible person stays on the
- 2:16right path. And again, for the despondent,
- 2:24every day brings trouble. For the happy heart, life is a
- 2:28continual feast. Better to have little with fear
- 2:32for the Lord than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.
- 2:38A bowl of vegetables with someone you love is better than
- 2:41steak with someone you hate. A hot tempered person starts
- 2:47fights. A cool tempered person stops
- 2:50them. A lazy person's way is blocked
- 2:54with briars, but the path of the upright is an open highway.
- 3:00Sensible children bring joy to their father.
- 3:03Foolish children despise their mother.
- 3:07Foolishness brings joy to those with no sense.
- 3:11A sensible person stays on the right path.
- 3:14Ah Jesus, it all sounds so obvious
- 3:27and clear as we read these. Why wouldn't they be true?
- 3:33But as I look at the second one and it talks about people having
- 3:37great treasure and inner turmoil.
- 3:40If there is not a more perfect and succinct description of our
- 3:45Western world today, I don't know what is.
- 3:48Ah, Lord, so often we choose great inner turmoil in order to
- 3:53gain the treasures that we want around us.
- 3:55Success, material objects, reputation, these are the things
- 4:01that we want, and we chase them with great anxiety and busyness
- 4:07and inner turmoil using the language of Solomon.
- 4:11But here you tell us, it's better to have little.
- 4:13It's better not to have those things and have fear for you,
- 4:18love for you, reverence for you. So, Lord, here we are standing
- 4:24before you again asking that you reset our compass, the compass
- 4:28of our hearts, to point to you so that when we wake each day,
- 4:33it's you and your company that drives us, and that all the
- 4:38other things that's mere trimming around our feast of
- 4:42relationship with You. And if we have that closeness
- 4:45with you, Lord, nothing else is nearly as important, because
- 4:50it's our relationship with You that stretches into eternity
- 4:54that draws us into your embrace to live in your holy city
- 4:58forever with comfort and love and your presence.
- 5:03So Jesus, scratch away all the other noise and attune our
- 5:09hearts to you and our relationship with you.
- 5:12Ah, because we love you and we want nothing more than closeness
- 5:15with you above all else. And we pray this in your saving
- 5:19name, Amen.
