- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Monday, the start of
- 0:15a new week. It is the 27th of January.
- 0:18Happy Australia Day public holiday to you.
- 0:21I hope you get a good day today if you're one of the few people
- 0:24have to go to work so the rest of us can have the day off.
- 0:27Thank you, well done, we appreciate it.
- 0:29And if you're not in Australia, well, what is all this?
- 0:32I'm not going to go into the politics and drama of Australia
- 0:35Day because that that is a podcast in itself.
- 0:38But we are not here for that sort of drama.
- 0:41We are here for the big scale drama that we're going to get in
- 0:45today's reading. You will remember we have been
- 0:48tracking through the book of First Kings and yes, friends,
- 0:51this week we will wrap it up. In fact, we will spend all five
- 0:55days this week in the book of First Kings as it comes to an
- 0:59end on Friday. We have been going through the
- 1:03list of Kings 1 by 1, hearing how they fared in their life and
- 1:07reign. And then on Thursday last week,
- 1:10we met this character Elijah, and we are going to hear today
- 1:14about the glorious showdown on Mount Carmel between the
- 1:18prophets of Baal and that one solitary prophet of the living
- 1:22God. And it is a Corker of a story
- 1:25with God's oar and power on display for everyone.
- 1:30So settle yourselves in as we read together First Kings
- 1:34chapter 18. Later on, in the third year of
- 1:47the drought, the Lord said to Elijah, Go and present yourself
- 1:52to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send
- 1:55rain. So Elijah went to appear before
- 1:58Ahab. Meanwhile, the famine had become
- 2:01very severe in Samaria, so Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in
- 2:06charge of the palace. Obadiah was a devoted follower
- 2:09of the Lord. Once when Jezebel had tried to
- 2:12kill all the Lord's prophets, Obadiah had hidden hundred of
- 2:16them in two caves. He put 50 prophets in each cave
- 2:20and supplied them with food and water.
- 2:22Ahab said to Obadiah, We must check every spring and valley in
- 2:27the land to see if we can find enough grass to save at least
- 2:30some of my horses and mules. So they divided the land between
- 2:34them. Ahab went one way by himself,
- 2:37and Obadiah went another way by himself.
- 2:40As Obadiah was walking along, he suddenly saw Elijah coming
- 2:44toward him. Obadiah recognised him at once
- 2:47and bowed low to the ground before him.
- 2:50Is it really you, my Lord Elijah?
- 2:53He asked. Yes, it is, Elijah replied.
- 2:57Now go and tell your master Elijah is here.
- 3:02Oh, Sir, Obadiah protested. What harm have I done to you
- 3:07that you are sending me to my death at the hands of Ahab?
- 3:10For I swear by the Lord your God that the king has searched every
- 3:14nation and Kingdom on earth from end to end to find you.
- 3:19And each time he was told Elijah isn't here, King Ahab forced the
- 3:24king of that nation to swear to the truth of his claim.
- 3:28And now you say, Go and tell your master Elijah is here.
- 3:32But as soon as I leave, the spirit of the Lord will carry
- 3:35you away to who knows where. When Ahab comes and cannot find
- 3:39you, he will kill me yet. I have been a true servant of
- 3:42the Lord all my life. Has no one told you, my Lord,
- 3:46about the time when Jezebel was trying to catch the Lord's
- 3:49prophets, I hid 100 of them in two caves and supplied them with
- 3:53food and water. And now you say, go and tell
- 3:56your master Elijah is here. Sir, if I do that, Ahab will
- 4:01certainly kill me. But Elijah said, I swear by the
- 4:06Lord Almighty, in whose presence I stand, that I will present
- 4:10myself to Ahab this very day. So Ibadiah went to tell Ahab
- 4:16that Elijah had come, and Ahab went out to meet Elijah.
- 4:20When Ahab saw him, he exclaimed, So is it really you, the
- 4:26troublemaker of Israel? I have made no trouble for
- 4:30Israel, Elijah replied. You and your family are the
- 4:34troublemakers, for you have refused to obey the commands of
- 4:38the Lord and have worshipped the images of Bal instead.
- 4:42Now summon all Israel to join me at Mount Carmel, along with the
- 4:47450 prophets of Bal and the 400 prophets of Ashura who are
- 4:52supported by Jezebel. So Ahab summoned all the people
- 4:56of Israel and the prophets to Mount Carmel.
- 4:59Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, How much longer
- 5:04will you waver, hobbling between two opinions.
- 5:08If the Lord is God, follow him, but if Bal is God, then follow
- 5:13him. But the people were completely
- 5:15silent. Then Elijah said to them, I am
- 5:19the only prophet of the Lord who is left.
- 5:22But Baal has 450 prophets. Now bring 2 bulls.
- 5:28The prophets of Baal may choose whichever one they wish and cut
- 5:31it into pieces and lay it on the wood of the altar, but without
- 5:35setting fire to it. I will prepare the other bull
- 5:39and lay it on the wood on the altar, but not set fire to it.
- 5:43Then call on the name of your God, and I will call them the
- 5:47name of the Lord. The God who answers by setting
- 5:51fire to the wood is the true God.
- 5:54And all the people agreed. Then Elijah said to the prophets
- 5:58of Baal, you go first, for there are many of you.
- 6:02Choose one of the bulls and prepare it, and call on the name
- 6:06of your God, but do not set fire to the wood.
- 6:10So they prepared one of the bulls and placed it on the
- 6:12altar. Then they called on the name of
- 6:15Bal from morning until noontime, shouting, Oh, Bal, answer us.
- 6:21But there was no reply of any kind.
- 6:23Then they danced, hobbling around the altar they had made
- 6:27about noontime. Elijah began mocking them.
- 6:30You'll have to shout louder. He scoffed, for surely he is a
- 6:34God. Perhaps he's daydreaming, was
- 6:37relieving himself, Or maybe he's away on a trip or is asleep and
- 6:41needs to be wakened. So they shouted louder, and
- 6:46following their normal custom, they cut themselves with knives
- 6:49and swords until the blood gushed out.
- 6:52They raved all afternoon until the time of the evening
- 6:56sacrifice. But still there was no sound, no
- 7:00reply, no response. Then Elijah called to the
- 7:04people. Come over here.
- 7:08They all crowded around him as he repaired the altar of the
- 7:11Lord that had been torn down. He took 12 Stones, one to
- 7:15represent each of the tribes of Israel, and he used the stones
- 7:19to rebuild the altar in the name of the Lord.
- 7:22Then he dug a trench around the altar large enough to hold about
- 7:263 gallons. He piled wood on the altar, cut
- 7:29the bull into pieces, and laid the pieces on the wood.
- 7:33Then he said, fill four large jars with water and pour the
- 7:38water over the offering in the wood.
- 7:41After they had done this he said do the same thing again, and
- 7:45when they were finished he said, now do it a third time.
- 7:50So they did as he said, and the water ran around the altar and
- 7:54even filled the trench. At the usual time for offering
- 7:58the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet walked up to the
- 8:02altar and prayed. Oh Lord God of Abraham, Isaac,
- 8:07and Jacob, prove today that you are the God of Israel and that I
- 8:13am your servant. Prove that I have done all this
- 8:17at your command. Oh Lord, answer me.
- 8:21Answer me so these people will know that you, O Lord our God,
- 8:27and that you have brought them back to yourself.
- 8:32Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and
- 8:36burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust.
- 8:42It even licked up all the water in the trench, and when all the
- 8:46people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried
- 8:50out. The Lord, He is God.
- 8:53Yes, the Lord is God. Then Elijah commanded, Seize all
- 8:59the prophets of Baal, don't let a single one escape.
- 9:03So the people seized them all, and Elijah took them down to the
- 9:07Kishon Valley and killed them there.
- 9:11Then Elijah said to Ahab, Go get something to eat and drink, for
- 9:16I hear a mighty rainstorm coming.
- 9:19So Ahab went to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of
- 9:24Mount Carmel and bowed low to the ground and prayed with his
- 9:27face between his knees. Then he said to his servant, go
- 9:32and look out toward the sea. The servant went and looked,
- 9:37then returned to Elijah and said, I didn't see anything. 7
- 9:41times Elijah told him to go and look.
- 9:44Finally, the 7th time his servant told him, I see a little
- 9:49cloud about the size of a man's hand rising from the sea.
- 9:54Then Elijah shouted, Hurry to Ahab and tell him, climb into
- 9:58your chariot and go back home. If you don't hurry, the rain
- 10:02will stop you. And soon the sky was black with
- 10:06clouds. A heavy wind brought a terrific
- 10:10rainstorm, and Ahab left quickly for Jezreel.
- 10:14Then the Lord gave special strength to Elijah.
- 10:17He tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab's
- 10:22chariot all the way to the entrance of Jezreel.
- 10:35Our Lord, hold that image in our mind of you, the Almighty God,
- 10:40sending lightning down from heaven to prove once and for all
- 10:45that you are God. Ah, you are indeed God.
- 10:52Not just our God, but God of the entire universe.
- 10:56And so we praise you, we give you all of our praise, and we
- 11:02commit ourselves to you because there is no other who deserves
- 11:07our lives. In fact, there is no other
- 11:10author of life and of everything that we know.
- 11:15We just humble ourselves and lift you up, and we love you and
- 11:20we praise you, our wonderful God, our mighty Saviour, a
- 11:25magnificent Creator, in whose Son's name we pray all of these
- 11:30things. Amen.
