- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: modern white tail hunter and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wire to Hunt Podcast. I'm your guest
- 0:14Speaker 1: host Tony Peterson, and today I'm joined by Brodie Swisher
- 0:18Speaker 1: to discuss strategies and tactics for hunting pressure dear during
- 0:23Speaker 1: the entire rut. All right, folks, welcome to the Wire
- 0:40Speaker 1: to Hunt Podcast, which is brought to you by First Light.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You might notice that this is not the voice of
- 0:45Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. He's off at the National Air Guitar Championship
- 0:48Speaker 1: where he's competing as a semi finalist after winning the
- 0:51Speaker 1: Midwest Regional back in April. So wish him luck. You
- 0:55Speaker 1: got me instead, And today my guest is Brodie Swisher.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Brody is an outdoor later and a white tail nut.
- 1:01Speaker 1: He lives in Tennessee, but he hunts all over the country,
- 1:04Speaker 1: not only for his job but for his personal obsession.
- 1:08Speaker 1: He's one of my favorite industry personalities for a couple
- 1:11Speaker 1: of reasons. He's just down to earth and he's truly
- 1:14Speaker 1: honest about his hunting motivations. I love that, and you're
- 1:17Speaker 1: gonna hear that in this episode. He's also just eate
- 1:20Speaker 1: up with hunting because he loves it, and he'll shoot
- 1:22Speaker 1: a deer for meat just as quickly as he'll drop
- 1:24Speaker 1: the hammer on a big buck, which is something you know,
- 1:27Speaker 1: I love too. I had a great time chatting with him,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and I think you're going to love his fresh take
- 1:32Speaker 1: on hunting and his in depth strategies for staying on
- 1:35Speaker 1: bucks from the last part of October all the way
- 1:38Speaker 1: through November. Brodie Swisher, it is good to see your face, buddy, absolutely,
- 1:45Speaker 1: man always good to say you and catch up every
- 1:49Speaker 1: few months every season, whatever it is, man a, it's
- 1:51Speaker 1: good to get back in the groove. It catch up
- 1:53Speaker 1: with you a bit. So we were we were just
- 1:55Speaker 1: chatting off air. You and I have hunted together a
- 1:56Speaker 1: few times. We've known each other, I don't know, six seven,
- 2:00Speaker 1: eight years now, and when we were going to set
- 2:03Speaker 1: up this interview, I looked back on our text strings
- 2:06Speaker 1: to see if I could find your Skype user name
- 2:08Speaker 1: so I could look you up. And I had totally
- 2:10Speaker 1: forgotten about this, you know, but we hunted Florida together
- 2:14Speaker 1: on that freaking mosquito fest down there a few years ago,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and there's a there's a part of that text string
- 2:20Speaker 1: where I had grunted in a spike and I was
- 2:24Speaker 1: I was texting the guy who was kind of in
- 2:26Speaker 1: charge of the thing. I'm like, I got a buck coming.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I need to shoot. I gotta shoot it. And he's like,
- 2:29Speaker 1: how big is it. I'm like, it's a spike. He's like,
- 2:31Speaker 1: you can't shoot it. So I was texting you at
- 2:33Speaker 1: the same time, and You're like, you gotta shoot that
- 2:36Speaker 1: won't let me. Yeah. Well, I remember that hunt well
- 2:40Speaker 1: and I think about it every season. Honestly. It's just,
- 2:43Speaker 1: you know, good or bad on the outcome of the hunt.
- 2:45Speaker 1: It's always good memories. You know, some stories in there,
- 2:47Speaker 1: but I just remember the same deal. I think it's
- 2:50Speaker 1: my last ton of the of the you know, the
- 2:52Speaker 1: trip and and you know, just like said the spike,
- 2:54Speaker 1: spike comes out and and like they know, man, it's
- 2:58Speaker 1: gotta be four intan five inches whatever they gotta be
- 3:00Speaker 1: for spike. And I'm just I'm ready to you know
- 3:02Speaker 1: on low turn it low sended and uh and they
- 3:05Speaker 1: slapped you on the handsaid, no, you can't do that,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and the same dal on the first day. I remember
- 3:08Speaker 1: the first day I had all these doves kept coming
- 3:10Speaker 1: by me. I'm like, hey, we're good to shoot doves.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'm fixing to send it on one of these suckers,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and oh no, you can't shoot those. I was like, dude,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I wouldn't have come to Florida if I'd have known
- 3:17Speaker 1: ahead of time that I can't shoot dose or you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: any of the mixed bag and meet meet critters. So yeah,
- 3:24Speaker 1: that was fun hunt. Tough hunt, but good times. Nonetheless,
- 3:28Speaker 1: it wasn't it you know it? What it makes me
- 3:30Speaker 1: think about that, I think, here, I don't want to
- 3:33Speaker 1: get in trouble with this, but I'm gonna say it anyway.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And so that was a media hunt, right. We were
- 3:38Speaker 1: people This Camel company brought us down there to do
- 3:41Speaker 1: that hunt test out some stuff. So that was bought
- 3:43Speaker 1: and paid for. We didn't pay for it. It was
- 3:45Speaker 1: kind of a guided deal. And the assumption on those
- 3:49Speaker 1: hunts is always that it's a trophy hunt. Like you
- 3:51Speaker 1: just you show up and everybody's hunting trophies and it's
- 3:54Speaker 1: just like accepted that way. And so when somebody like
- 3:56Speaker 1: you or I gets into the camp, it's sort of
- 4:00Speaker 1: sort of shakes things, uh off the foundation just a
- 4:03Speaker 1: little bit, because you know, you do the same thing
- 4:06Speaker 1: I do in those situations. I don't really do those
- 4:08Speaker 1: hunts anymore, but I always would be like, what's the
- 4:11Speaker 1: smallest thing I can shoot and not get kicked out?
- 4:16Speaker 1: And you know you That's one of the reasons I
- 4:18Speaker 1: think that you and I have gotten to be good
- 4:21Speaker 1: buddies is that I just I love I would I
- 4:25Speaker 1: would label you as just a hunter like I would.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I wouldn't put you know, I wouldn't say straight public
- 4:30Speaker 1: land hunter, private land hunter, dear grower, trophy hunter, none
- 4:34Speaker 1: of that. I would just be like that, dude is
- 4:35Speaker 1: just a hunter of critters, and I love that help. Yeah, absolutely,
- 4:40Speaker 1: that's me. Man. I well, I mean, I'm in the
- 4:43Speaker 1: same boat as a lot of guys. We all want
- 4:44Speaker 1: to see the big bucks man who doesn't want to
- 4:46Speaker 1: shoot a big buck. For somebody to say, I'm not
- 4:48Speaker 1: a big buck hunter and I'll pass on the trophy
- 4:50Speaker 1: when he comes back because I want to shoot it.
- 4:51Speaker 1: We're not doing that. But man, here's the deal. I mean, um,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I like to hunt. I like to provide. I like
- 4:57Speaker 1: to take care of my family. I like the experiences.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I like the store. I like to prove once again
- 5:01Speaker 1: to myself and remind remind myself that I can do
- 5:04Speaker 1: it again and still got it. Whatever, all the different
- 5:07Speaker 1: aspects for me go into it. It doesn't matter public land,
- 5:10Speaker 1: private land, whatever. I enjoy the hunt and uh, as
- 5:13Speaker 1: long as it's legal and you're doing things like you're
- 5:15Speaker 1: supposed to. Um, I love to play the game every time.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And so it is just I'm very much an opportunistic hunter.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And UM, like I said Trophy Buck Spike book, I
- 5:26Speaker 1: love to tell the story, make stories, and so it's
- 5:30Speaker 1: hard not to take advantage of those opportunities when they come.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And and I still love it. You know, I've been
- 5:34Speaker 1: doing a long time, but I still love, uh coming
- 5:37Speaker 1: to full draw, seeing if I can get to full
- 5:38Speaker 1: draw with one standing right there in twelve yards. And
- 5:40Speaker 1: so it's a lot of fun. Yeah. And you you've
- 5:43Speaker 1: got a big family, and you feed him a lot
- 5:45Speaker 1: of wild game. And I had I had a conversation
- 5:47Speaker 1: the other day with a fellow that I kind of like.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I know him a little bit, and he's he's a
- 5:53Speaker 1: bow hunter, and he was telling me how him and
- 5:56Speaker 1: his son three years ago both shot nice bucks and
- 5:59Speaker 1: they're still eating them. I was just like, you guys,
- 6:04Speaker 1: haven't gone through, you know. I mean, even if they're
- 6:06Speaker 1: really big bucks, what are you talking a hundred hundred
- 6:08Speaker 1: ten pounds of meat? Maybe maybe you know, and this
- 6:11Speaker 1: is kind of northern Minnesota, so they're gonna be big deer.
- 6:13Speaker 1: But I was like, how the hell could you not
- 6:15Speaker 1: go through that meat? And you know, yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 1: that that's it. I don't know, uh they're not beating
- 6:22Speaker 1: enough tacos or something, but I uh, yeah, it gets
- 6:25Speaker 1: going quick, and and I do. I laugh every time
- 6:28Speaker 1: I see you know, it seems like it's some some
- 6:30Speaker 1: chicken or whoever, you know, on social media and they'll
- 6:33Speaker 1: they'll kill a sixty pound ough and like just fill
- 6:36Speaker 1: the freezer. And I'm like, no, you did not. You know,
- 6:39Speaker 1: I don't know how big your freezer is it. You know,
- 6:41Speaker 1: it's gonna take more than that. I love you the trying,
- 6:44Speaker 1: but yeah, it's uh, it takes us a lot of
- 6:46Speaker 1: meat to feel a freezer. And and we do keep
- 6:48Speaker 1: it stocked. And that's usually you know, about this time
- 6:51Speaker 1: of year. My wife's like, hey, you need to get
- 6:53Speaker 1: out there and kill some creators because we were getting
- 6:55Speaker 1: thin and the freezer and so I love those those
- 6:58Speaker 1: directions and orders from the ball to get out there
- 7:01Speaker 1: and get some mate. So oh yeah, that that parts fun.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I mean when you think when you think about that,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know, I always used this as an example. This
- 7:10Speaker 1: was man, This was probably twelve thirteen years ago. This
- 7:13Speaker 1: was back when a non resident could buy and over
- 7:14Speaker 1: the counter uh antalope tag in North Dakota for archery.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And I went out a couple of buddies of mine
- 7:21Speaker 1: and my dad. We went out hunting for the opener
- 7:24Speaker 1: and I shot an antelope the first night. And you know,
- 7:28Speaker 1: it wasn't It wasn't a real big goat or anything.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Even a big one is not that big. But we
- 7:32Speaker 1: ate that entire thing during our except for one I
- 7:36Speaker 1: had one sandwich bag maybe it was tender lines or
- 7:39Speaker 1: something of of meat that I brought home from that
- 7:42Speaker 1: It was like it was awesome. You know, every night
- 7:44Speaker 1: you got you're seeing four guys who are spotting stock
- 7:46Speaker 1: and all day you know, we ate a lot, and
- 7:49Speaker 1: so it was like every night was awesome because you're
- 7:51Speaker 1: eating fresh antalope. But then when you go home from
- 7:53Speaker 1: a hunt where you were successful and you've got like
- 7:56Speaker 1: seven ounces of meat, it kind of sucks you bring
- 7:59Speaker 1: home with a plot back to the rest of the family.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Not quite as impressed, are they, No, but it's that
- 8:05Speaker 1: that part's good. You You started out your fall this year,
- 8:09Speaker 1: uh way back in you know, early September, maybe even
- 8:12Speaker 1: late August, hunting some velvet deer and you killed one
- 8:15Speaker 1: in in Kentucky, right, that's right. Yeah, that was the
- 8:18Speaker 1: start to my season. First I got to play the
- 8:21Speaker 1: game there and uh, man, had a great week. It
- 8:24Speaker 1: was fun. I was kind of getting over the COVID
- 8:27Speaker 1: stuff from a month ago. We're better and and just
- 8:30Speaker 1: kind of getting my energy back and um, it was
- 8:33Speaker 1: a great way to get in the stand and and
- 8:35Speaker 1: I'll just be back in the back of the woods
- 8:38Speaker 1: bow hunting again. Man. I look forward to it every year.
- 8:39Speaker 1: If like I said, this year was a little bit
- 8:41Speaker 1: of a struggle, just not having the the energy. Oh
- 8:44Speaker 1: that that COVID kind of suck the life out of me.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And uh but just getting back in the game, Um,
- 8:50Speaker 1: a lot of fun. Yeah, we had a great time
- 8:51Speaker 1: hunting not too far from me. I'm on the Tennessee
- 8:54Speaker 1: line with Kentucky, so you know, thirty minute trip up
- 8:56Speaker 1: the road, and um, it's always good, you know, start
- 8:59Speaker 1: the season all there and and it's it's a hunt
- 9:02Speaker 1: where um, you know, depending on where you are, what's
- 9:05Speaker 1: the set up is, it's it's it's everything wrong with
- 9:08Speaker 1: the world. According to social media hunting private farm you
- 9:11Speaker 1: can hunt over corn up there, you can do all
- 9:13Speaker 1: the stuff. And uh, but I tell guys, I said, man,
- 9:16Speaker 1: it's just a fun hun to catch up with friends,
- 9:17Speaker 1: to be back in camp again. If it's legal, I
- 9:21Speaker 1: enjoy it, um, you know, and I love tapping into
- 9:25Speaker 1: that opportunity, you know, hunting afternoons there and yeah, I
- 9:29Speaker 1: guess it was the second night of the hunt. Um
- 9:31Speaker 1: sitting up on a little ridge and had food plots
- 9:33Speaker 1: on top and had corn out as well, and um,
- 9:37Speaker 1: just just so beautifully and had several bucks come through it,
- 9:40Speaker 1: some doos and pons and the buck because I was
- 9:43Speaker 1: after it was just a goofy, goofy seven pointer buck
- 9:45Speaker 1: that my buddy said, Hey, man, I've got the seven
- 9:48Speaker 1: point he's he's an older buck, very mature buck, but
- 9:51Speaker 1: he just ever has grown. He got short times, kind
- 9:53Speaker 1: of the short time seven point one side's goofy and
- 9:56Speaker 1: um and again just be an opportunistic hunter, I said, man,
- 9:59Speaker 1: that's put me in the stand man, let me turn
- 10:01Speaker 1: and turn me loose, I'll go after it, you know.
- 10:03Speaker 1: So I've enjoyed those opportunities sometimes called a cold man
- 10:07Speaker 1: or whatever, you know, just shooting the deer that the
- 10:10Speaker 1: other guys won't and and man, it's again, I have
- 10:13Speaker 1: a big time. I got a story to tell, memories made,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and um, you know, some guys who go home empty
- 10:19Speaker 1: hand because they don't want to shoot us a certain deer.
- 10:20Speaker 1: They got a higher standard. That's okay too, you know.
- 10:23Speaker 1: But I just love to play game, you know, coming
- 10:25Speaker 1: home with Cooper full of meat and stories made, and
- 10:28Speaker 1: so can't complain one bit. Yeah knows I was. I
- 10:31Speaker 1: was talking to uh Tyler Jones from the Element uh
- 10:35Speaker 1: after he went down. He went up to Nebraska and
- 10:39Speaker 1: he killed a nice buck right away the first couple
- 10:41Speaker 1: of days of the season, and just talking to him
- 10:44Speaker 1: and he was like, as I was talking to him,
- 10:47Speaker 1: he was cutting that deer up, and he was just happy,
- 10:50Speaker 1: like just you know, you start the season, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and we're we're in a little bit different in a
- 10:54Speaker 1: place because we make our living off of this. So
- 10:56Speaker 1: when you get that monkey off your back right away,
- 10:57Speaker 1: it's nice, but it's just so on to start the
- 11:00Speaker 1: year right away with you know, with a successful hunt
- 11:05Speaker 1: like that, such a freaking blast man. Yeah, absolutely, and
- 11:09Speaker 1: that's that was a deal for me. The next night
- 11:11Speaker 1: or two after that buck, I shot a dough and
- 11:13Speaker 1: so I had to to deer and the cooler and
- 11:16Speaker 1: uh it is man, the monkeys off the back get
- 11:18Speaker 1: to come home and knowing that, hey, our regular season
- 11:22Speaker 1: here in Tennessee and you started. We've got a couple
- 11:23Speaker 1: more weeks. But I've already got two tags punched, you
- 11:26Speaker 1: know for the season. Uh, testing out some gear and
- 11:29Speaker 1: and and just two deer in, you know, right off
- 11:32Speaker 1: the bats. My kids are fired up because they know
- 11:34Speaker 1: how that means Opening day is their time. They're thinking
- 11:36Speaker 1: Dad's done for a while. We're up to bat, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 1: in the stand or ground lines. So you mentioned I
- 11:42Speaker 1: I want to talk about pre rut and rut strategies
- 11:45Speaker 1: with you. But you mentioned talk taking your kids. How
- 11:47Speaker 1: many how many kids you got hunting? Now? Well, I've
- 11:51Speaker 1: got four kids and my oldest daughter she's she's she's eighteen,
- 11:55Speaker 1: um and she's big into soccer and she her hunting.
- 11:59Speaker 1: You know, she'll hunt a time or two a year. Now,
- 12:01Speaker 1: you know, she's just so busy with everything. Um. But
- 12:04Speaker 1: my boys, I've got three boys at any given weekend
- 12:06Speaker 1: think they need to be in the woods. It's their turn.
- 12:09Speaker 1: And so they all they all love it. Um, And
- 12:12Speaker 1: so yeah, it's fun. Uh it's a challenge just because
- 12:16Speaker 1: um again they all want to go and uh, just
- 12:18Speaker 1: making those opportunities, getting those blinds in the right spot
- 12:21Speaker 1: and just setting up for successes. It's tough, but um.
- 12:25Speaker 1: And there's many times where I'm in the blind with
- 12:26Speaker 1: him and we're two or three of us in the
- 12:28Speaker 1: blind and and I swear I'll never do it again.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And then I get home and I realized, Man, that's
- 12:32Speaker 1: the memories that we're making for for a lifetime. You know.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Do do you when you're bringing those boys, do you
- 12:37Speaker 1: are you hunting as well? Are you just guiding? Now
- 12:41Speaker 1: I'm just guiding. I used to do that. He used
- 12:43Speaker 1: to pack my bow in there and think, okay, well
- 12:45Speaker 1: maybe you'll shoot one and I will, and then it
- 12:47Speaker 1: just turns into cluster and then um and then of
- 12:50Speaker 1: course in their mind too, they're they're thinking, well, this
- 12:53Speaker 1: ain't about me, this is about him. You know, he's
- 12:54Speaker 1: gonna shlve me out of the way. If the big
- 12:56Speaker 1: buck walks out, that's why he's got his bow and
- 12:58Speaker 1: so uh se, yeah, anymore, I carry the camera and
- 13:01Speaker 1: it's just all about them getting the shot. And um,
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, depending on the situation. I mean, if there
- 13:05Speaker 1: is a legitimate from older boy, if there's a legitimate
- 13:07Speaker 1: opportunity for us to you know, double up on turkeys,
- 13:10Speaker 1: or you know, if there's an opportunity for a double
- 13:12Speaker 1: true double opportunity, and then maybe you know. But uh,
- 13:15Speaker 1: for the most part is you it's back in their
- 13:18Speaker 1: ear and were getting with crap Carrie, I don't. I
- 13:20Speaker 1: don't all of Caraboon stuff, you know. And for me
- 13:23Speaker 1: as well, I'm not not a chance. You know. We've
- 13:25Speaker 1: got so much stuff cameras and gear and tripods and
- 13:28Speaker 1: ground blinds and all this stuff, and so there's more
- 13:31Speaker 1: than enough as Yeah, I'm I'm in the same boat
- 13:36Speaker 1: as you. You know, when I take take my little
- 13:38Speaker 1: girls out because we're hunting, whether it's turkeys or dear,
- 13:41Speaker 1: we're hunting out of blinds. And I just I kind
- 13:44Speaker 1: of made the decision when I started with them. I'm like,
- 13:47Speaker 1: it's it's their time. I'm just gonna guy and I
- 13:50Speaker 1: don't bring a weapon, and I actually love it, like
- 13:55Speaker 1: it really causes me to just beat Like you said,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you know, like I this is for them, and so
- 14:00Speaker 1: my decision making process is always like, how do we
- 14:03Speaker 1: get them a burder? How do we get them a dear?
- 14:06Speaker 1: And to me, I don't know about you, but I
- 14:08Speaker 1: actually feel like, even though, like you said, you've got
- 14:10Speaker 1: a ton of gear to carry and you've got a
- 14:12Speaker 1: lot of stuff to think about with kids, I feel
- 14:14Speaker 1: so unburdened because I'm not worried about feeling a tag
- 14:18Speaker 1: for myself. I feel I feel like I just flow
- 14:20Speaker 1: state that stuff so much better, and I'm just like,
- 14:23Speaker 1: I'm in it. It makes me feel like I'm in
- 14:25Speaker 1: it for the right reasons. I don't know if that
- 14:26Speaker 1: makes sense or not. No, absolutely, yeah, I mean it's
- 14:30Speaker 1: it's so pure and uh again, to me, it's just
- 14:32Speaker 1: making those memories, you know, And I I think back
- 14:35Speaker 1: to my first opportunities, and man, I remember those so
- 14:38Speaker 1: much and just appreciate my dad so much for not
- 14:41Speaker 1: blowing it and and leaving me behind and making sure
- 14:44Speaker 1: you invested in me and taking me on those opportunities.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I've never forgotten. You know, some of the greatest memories
- 14:49Speaker 1: of my life. And so I just think, man, this
- 14:51Speaker 1: is an investment. It's an investment of your time. You
- 14:52Speaker 1: love your energy, um, and then don't miss out on
- 14:56Speaker 1: that because it's gonna be come back and it's gonna
- 14:57Speaker 1: be way bigger than me going off and shooting any
- 15:01Speaker 1: book of any kind. Almon you know is investing in
- 15:03Speaker 1: those memories. Yeah, can I can I go to rant
- 15:07Speaker 1: for a second because what you just said reminds me
- 15:08Speaker 1: is something that pisces me off. And I'm curious if
- 15:11Speaker 1: you ever experienced this. So, you know, you you have
- 15:14Speaker 1: the one daughter and then you've got three boys. I
- 15:16Speaker 1: have two daughters, and it's weird because you know my
- 15:20Speaker 1: daughters are they're they're bumping up on ten years old.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And it's weird how often people tell me how horrible
- 15:27Speaker 1: they're gonna be, And like even strangers, you know, they'll
- 15:30Speaker 1: send me an email and be like, um, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 1: it's really awesome that you're taking your girls hunting, but
- 15:34Speaker 1: in four years you're gonna hate them and you're gonna
- 15:36Speaker 1: want to do this and they're gonna hate you. And
- 15:37Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm like, hey, I know that that's a possibility,
- 15:41Speaker 1: believe me, Like I get it, and like be like,
- 15:44Speaker 1: where do we get if you constantly remind me of this?
- 15:48Speaker 1: You know what I mean, Like, what what are we
- 15:49Speaker 1: doing here? It's like I don't want to sit there
- 15:52Speaker 1: and look at the future and be like, well, this
- 15:54Speaker 1: could suck, so I'm gonna let it ruin this time now.
- 15:57Speaker 1: It's it's bizarre to me. Yeah, well, and I hear
- 16:01Speaker 1: that from time. It's time too. And and you know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I'm usually quick to say, hey, you know, just because
- 16:05Speaker 1: you had a bad experience with your family and your
- 16:07Speaker 1: situation or whatever, doesn't mean that's gonna be my deal
- 16:10Speaker 1: with my daughter, you know whatever. And she still loves it.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I mean, she just she's so busy with everything else.
- 16:15Speaker 1: But um, yeah, it is. You just have to make
- 16:17Speaker 1: it happen, you know, in this moment, not focus on
- 16:21Speaker 1: what's gonna be on down the line and what might
- 16:24Speaker 1: change or whatever, and again disinvesting the time you've got
- 16:27Speaker 1: right now. And um, you know, like I said, even
- 16:30Speaker 1: despite the fact that she's gotten busier and doesn't get
- 16:33Speaker 1: to hunt us much. I mean every year, she'll still say, hey,
- 16:36Speaker 1: I want I want to go, you know, I want
- 16:38Speaker 1: to get out there with you. And I think for
- 16:40Speaker 1: her more than anything, I think it's just about being
- 16:41Speaker 1: with me, you know, spending time. She enjoys that and
- 16:44Speaker 1: so um yeah, I just keep putting, you know, to
- 16:46Speaker 1: keep taking them and uh, don't don't push it, don't
- 16:49Speaker 1: force you know, just let them do their thing and
- 16:51Speaker 1: enjoy it. And again just being together, making those memories
- 16:53Speaker 1: and uh, it's it's hard to beat. Yeah, it's awesome.
- 16:56Speaker 1: So we're we're bumping right up on here pre rut,
- 17:02Speaker 1: coming into the rut. What are you What are your
- 17:03Speaker 1: plans for late October throughout November? Gosh, man, you know,
- 17:10Speaker 1: I just think all the time. More and more I
- 17:13Speaker 1: find myself digging the last week of October and um,
- 17:17Speaker 1: you know that time last week of October through uh,
- 17:21Speaker 1: those first couple of weeks in November before Bucks just
- 17:24Speaker 1: absolutely lose your mind. Uh some of the best time,
- 17:27Speaker 1: I think. You know, guys miss out a lot of time,
- 17:30Speaker 1: taking putting in all their time and taking their vacation.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Um for the rud itself, you know, miss out a
- 17:36Speaker 1: lost opportunities at pre rut, you know, starting to let
- 17:38Speaker 1: October I mean, man, gosh, late October could be the
- 17:41Speaker 1: best possible time. You know, I've killed a lot of
- 17:43Speaker 1: good bucks. You know that pre rut and and that's
- 17:45Speaker 1: to me is when things start shaking, stinking things start kicking. Uh.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Is that late October and that first week in November.
- 17:52Speaker 1: For me, that's when I do the majority of my
- 17:54Speaker 1: calling the most responsive. Uh. You know, I see and
- 17:58Speaker 1: and calling to rattling, running um and and calling bucks
- 18:02Speaker 1: out of those betting airs, those thickets that I'm hanging
- 18:05Speaker 1: out near. Um. But it just really starts to happen
- 18:08Speaker 1: in that time. Again. Um. A lot of guys take
- 18:11Speaker 1: their time later on in November, but um, and that's
- 18:14Speaker 1: good because that opens the woods up for me. But
- 18:16Speaker 1: you know that that time last week of October, one
- 18:19Speaker 1: part of November. Again, calling is is key. I do
- 18:21Speaker 1: a lot of that, But to me, it's set time
- 18:23Speaker 1: when those bucks first start realizing here we go, you know,
- 18:27Speaker 1: the big boys start realizing, you know, and they start
- 18:30Speaker 1: slipping a little further and further. I know some guys
- 18:32Speaker 1: that say bucks or you know, completely nocturnal or whatever,
- 18:35Speaker 1: but man, in my mind, there's there's a buck standing
- 18:37Speaker 1: on his feet somewhere. You just got to get close
- 18:39Speaker 1: enough to where you're gonna see you know, he's gonna
- 18:40Speaker 1: get up, he's gonna move around. Yeah, he maybe not
- 18:43Speaker 1: turnal from the standpoint and running wide open through the
- 18:46Speaker 1: fields in the day or big timber, but man, he's
- 18:48Speaker 1: on his feet somewhere. He's gonna get up and stretch somewhere. Uh.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And is that October end of October comes on first
- 18:54Speaker 1: part of November. That's when um again, I see them
- 18:58Speaker 1: starting venturing further and further from that bed and uh,
- 19:01Speaker 1: they start cracking out in that food plot, you know
- 19:03Speaker 1: before last light, or they start getting out where your
- 19:06Speaker 1: tree stand is, wherever it is, you know, um placement wise,
- 19:09Speaker 1: they're just starting to venture a little further and further
- 19:11Speaker 1: from their beds. And that's that first opportunity for those
- 19:14Speaker 1: bigger deer um to get out and see it. All
- 19:17Speaker 1: the fuss is about, because you know, good well, all
- 19:19Speaker 1: those young bucks man, they're they're one running wide open
- 19:22Speaker 1: thinking you know, it's go time starting mid October whatever,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and you know, the guys get fired up, say hey man,
- 19:27Speaker 1: the ruts on. Well you just got them young bucks.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Those older bucks, you know, they're kind of hanging back.
- 19:32Speaker 1: They've played the game. They know the deal. They'll kind
- 19:34Speaker 1: of lay low. But again you get into that last
- 19:37Speaker 1: last week October one, part of November, and uh again
- 19:40Speaker 1: just catching them starting to slip up on their feet
- 19:42Speaker 1: a little more, get out and venture around a little more.
- 19:44Speaker 1: You's just a good time to be be in the tree.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Are you when you're when you're talking about this late
- 20:00Speaker 1: October type of hunting where you're calling and you're you know,
- 20:03Speaker 1: hopefully close to a betting area, are you? Because when
- 20:07Speaker 1: when you talk about that, I think about my strategy
- 20:09Speaker 1: and I really go, if you were to take like,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I don't know, October twenty, I'm probably gonna be a
- 20:15Speaker 1: staging area, you know by Halloween or November one, then
- 20:19Speaker 1: I'm really starting to think those pinch points and and
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know, like the terrain, really using the terrain to
- 20:25Speaker 1: my advantage. But when you talk about late October white ties,
- 20:28Speaker 1: it sounds like you're talking about kind of got those
- 20:31Speaker 1: bucks pinned down. You're like, all right, he's probably gonna
- 20:33Speaker 1: betting here. I know he's going to that plotter, he's
- 20:35Speaker 1: going to that field. You're gonna creep in there to
- 20:37Speaker 1: that cover pretty close and just use that his his
- 20:41Speaker 1: kind of willingness to just get up little earlier in daylight,
- 20:46Speaker 1: move around, make some rubs. But it sounds like you're
- 20:49Speaker 1: talking about in the cover strategy mostly yeah, very much.
- 20:52Speaker 1: So it is at staging area. UM, and I saw
- 20:55Speaker 1: it real well. It's able to show it to my
- 20:57Speaker 1: son several excuse me, several years ago. You know, we're
- 21:00Speaker 1: just sit in the field and watch the field and um,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and you know, night after night, he's like, hey, we
- 21:05Speaker 1: didn't see anything. You know, we didn't see anything, and
- 21:06Speaker 1: nothing happened in the field. There's just no deer moving.
- 21:09Speaker 1: And uh. We we came out on a trail that
- 21:11Speaker 1: we had found in the field and uh, entry trail
- 21:14Speaker 1: to the field, and I just I mean, look, let's
- 21:16Speaker 1: back down this trailer. Are always coming out last light, dark, whatever,
- 21:19Speaker 1: We always find them there. And we found that trail.
- 21:21Speaker 1: We just backtracked down about semi five yards hundred yards
- 21:24Speaker 1: into the woods and just down a little just just
- 21:26Speaker 1: a little knife ridge and um, just very narrow trail
- 21:30Speaker 1: right up the sides of it though. And we set
- 21:33Speaker 1: up in there and and it was just nine and
- 21:34Speaker 1: day difference, catching those deer again late October, and they
- 21:38Speaker 1: were just all hanging out right there and I'm like, dude,
- 21:40Speaker 1: we missed it. We're sitting out and field waiting on
- 21:42Speaker 1: something to happen in the field. But it's all right here.
- 21:44Speaker 1: We would have never known were back at stand up
- 21:47Speaker 1: in there and um, get him up in there, and
- 21:49Speaker 1: he was able to kill a ten pointer and it
- 21:51Speaker 1: just came right down the trail right in front of him,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and uh, just a beautiful thing, man. And and uh again,
- 21:56Speaker 1: it's just backing up, catching those staging areas, finding those
- 22:00Speaker 1: deer that slid out of their bedding areas. And and
- 22:02Speaker 1: they're not blowing out that field yet, corn beans, whatever
- 22:05Speaker 1: it is. They're not blowing out there yet. They're still
- 22:06Speaker 1: hanging back the safety to security of that little staging area. Yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 1: when you when you talk about that, you bring up
- 22:16Speaker 1: a really really uh interesting point there about just a
- 22:22Speaker 1: reset moment of going back seventy five yards. This is
- 22:25Speaker 1: a mistake a lot of people make. And I think
- 22:27Speaker 1: we've had some mixed messaging in the in you know,
- 22:30Speaker 1: kind of in the public land, do it yourself type
- 22:32Speaker 1: of world where there's a lot of people pushing this
- 22:34Speaker 1: betting message and there's people who are super good at
- 22:37Speaker 1: hunting beds. But I think for the average person, it's
- 22:42Speaker 1: probably better to be like, really incremental in your strategy.
- 22:46Speaker 1: So if you, like you said, if you get on
- 22:47Speaker 1: that field edge and you really want to hunt there
- 22:49Speaker 1: and they aren't showing, the assumption is there either I
- 22:53Speaker 1: gotta go right in on top of his bed or
- 22:55Speaker 1: they're nocturnal, both of which are probably not true, or
- 22:59Speaker 1: they either not inherently true. And when you're when you're
- 23:02Speaker 1: bow hunting, even private land, public land, it doesn't really
- 23:05Speaker 1: seem to matter. Those deer that you guys that you're
- 23:08Speaker 1: talking about there and taking your son in there and
- 23:10Speaker 1: killing them, those you are just waiting for you guys
- 23:12Speaker 1: to leave. There's a reason they're staging in there. They
- 23:15Speaker 1: know where that hunting pressure is concentrated, and they know
- 23:19Speaker 1: as little as seventy five yards away they're safe to
- 23:22Speaker 1: get up and eat some acorns or do whatever they want,
- 23:24Speaker 1: make a rub, check a scrape. They're just not going
- 23:27Speaker 1: out where you've been concentrating your pressure, and as little
- 23:30Speaker 1: of a move as that is can make all the difference. Absolutely. Yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 1: excuse me, And I think we we do between checking
- 23:39Speaker 1: stuff scouting stuff, and you know we gotta be scouting.
- 23:42Speaker 1: I get it. But I think so many guys underestimate
- 23:45Speaker 1: the fact that every scouting trip they make, every trail
- 23:48Speaker 1: camera check they make, every time they're sitting foot in
- 23:50Speaker 1: there and trim and shooting lanes, going back and double
- 23:53Speaker 1: checking everything's good and just wanting to look one more time,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and all the stuff of that human pressure in there,
- 23:59Speaker 1: And they just underestimate to the fact that those deer
- 24:02Speaker 1: no man. You know, you may get by with the
- 24:04Speaker 1: you know, the young bucks, young does and stuff, may
- 24:07Speaker 1: not give a rip, but those mature deer no bucks,
- 24:10Speaker 1: those whatever, they know. Dude, they know you the first
- 24:12Speaker 1: time you step in those woods, I believe, you know.
- 24:14Speaker 1: That's why you gotta make it happen that first centrail
- 24:17Speaker 1: you lay down, And yes, they just immediately. I think
- 24:20Speaker 1: of the places we've seen you just know right away,
- 24:23Speaker 1: hey we're gonna slide that a little further down the field.
- 24:25Speaker 1: They're gonna they're gonna make you know, instead of coming
- 24:27Speaker 1: out where always did all of a sudden you notice
- 24:29Speaker 1: came out, you know, hundred yards further down the buield,
- 24:31Speaker 1: You know, coincidence? I don't. I don't think so. I
- 24:33Speaker 1: think those dudes know they're playing you just as much
- 24:36Speaker 1: as you're playing them. Yeah, well they are and there,
- 24:39Speaker 1: you know, I think about you know, I hunt like
- 24:42Speaker 1: northern Wisconsin quite a bit around end of October beginning
- 24:46Speaker 1: in November, and so there's you know a lot of
- 24:49Speaker 1: years where you're dealing with snow right like you might
- 24:51Speaker 1: get a couple inches of fresh snow. And the one
- 24:53Speaker 1: thing that always just amazes me is, you know, if
- 24:57Speaker 1: I throw up a stand on private land and leave
- 25:01Speaker 1: it up overnight and we get snow, it's almost a
- 25:03Speaker 1: guarantee that I'll see deer tracks walking up to that
- 25:06Speaker 1: sucker and somewhere throughout the night. And it's the same
- 25:08Speaker 1: thing when you put up a trail camera. You know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: the first series of pictures you get are almost always
- 25:13Speaker 1: dear looking at it, and a lot of times you
- 25:15Speaker 1: get that old dough sniffing right on it or the
- 25:17Speaker 1: butt I mean, and it's you think, oh, they smelled it.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Maybe they smelled it, maybe they saw it. It doesn't matter.
- 25:22Speaker 1: They knew you were there and they and they checked
- 25:25Speaker 1: it out. And you think about, you know that the
- 25:29Speaker 1: strategy that's so common is to hunt early, sit on
- 25:34Speaker 1: your field edges, and then kind of take a break
- 25:37Speaker 1: during the lull or whatever, and then swing back around
- 25:40Speaker 1: this time of year and started getting out of those
- 25:41Speaker 1: field edges again, waiting for those does to draw the
- 25:43Speaker 1: bucks out. But all of that pressure in the same spot,
- 25:46Speaker 1: it just puts them off. And you know when you
- 25:50Speaker 1: like you said something earlier about nocturnal bucks and you know, like, wow,
- 25:53Speaker 1: maybe their nocturnal, maybe they're not, or something to that effect.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I literally don't believe there's a nocturnal deer out there,
- 25:59Speaker 1: like right, you know, and you you've seen this, I'm
- 26:01Speaker 1: sure when you go hunt like western white tails, I
- 26:05Speaker 1: mean you can do this with meal deer too, even
- 26:06Speaker 1: though they're different. But you go watch western white tails
- 26:10Speaker 1: bed down somewhere out in the stage or something, and
- 26:12Speaker 1: if you if you hang with them, those deer get up,
- 26:15Speaker 1: they reposition with the sun, with the wind. They browsed
- 26:19Speaker 1: for a while, or you know, you get into a
- 26:21Speaker 1: situation like I killed a buck a couple of years
- 26:24Speaker 1: ago in Nebraska on public land on h opening night
- 26:28Speaker 1: ors the second night, I can't remember the first two
- 26:30Speaker 1: days of the season, and they were betting in the
- 26:32Speaker 1: middle of a bean field on this walk in land.
- 26:34Speaker 1: They'd get up feed for a while, bed down, get
- 26:38Speaker 1: up all day long. And you know, I mean those
- 26:40Speaker 1: are deer on public land. There's people messing around there.
- 26:43Speaker 1: And they're still not they're not nocturnal the way we
- 26:47Speaker 1: think they're just not like you said, they're they're not
- 26:49Speaker 1: coming out into that field blown across it at noon
- 26:52Speaker 1: because they're out of their minds with the buzz and
- 26:54Speaker 1: they're nuts. That's right, that's exactly, you know, the nocturnal thing.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Um again, they're they're moving somewhere. You know, we have
- 27:02Speaker 1: this idea that there, oh, they're not moving unless they're not. Well,
- 27:05Speaker 1: they're just they're not moving where you're at. You know,
- 27:07Speaker 1: they're not moving in those easy stands you've got hung
- 27:10Speaker 1: out there, just you know, right next to your truck
- 27:12Speaker 1: or whatever. But if you dig a little deeper, you
- 27:14Speaker 1: got a little further in. And like you said earlier,
- 27:16Speaker 1: just talking about the increments, don't don't just bust it
- 27:19Speaker 1: in there and and go, hey, we've got to get
- 27:21Speaker 1: in the middle of the bedding air right now, because
- 27:23Speaker 1: they're not coming in the field anymore. But just keep
- 27:25Speaker 1: checking away, you know, and just a little increments and
- 27:27Speaker 1: take it in seventy five yards closer a hundred yards
- 27:30Speaker 1: and just see what you got. Maybe they don't hit
- 27:32Speaker 1: that that night. You need to realize, hey, I've got
- 27:34Speaker 1: to take it on in another a little bit. Just
- 27:35Speaker 1: keep working your way in um letting that activity dictate
- 27:40Speaker 1: kind of how far you go. Um But like I said,
- 27:43Speaker 1: he's moving somewhere. He's gonna stand up, he's gonna get
- 27:45Speaker 1: out of that sun. He's gonna move over it. Maybe
- 27:47Speaker 1: ten yards, maybe fifty yards. He's gonna move and reposition
- 27:51Speaker 1: himself with the wind, get out of the sun, find
- 27:53Speaker 1: the shade, uh brows a little bit whatever, and um,
- 27:57Speaker 1: so he's moving somewhere. It's just a matter you being
- 28:01Speaker 1: in that spot. Man, close that spot where you can
- 28:03Speaker 1: see that activity when he does stand up. Yeah, And
- 28:05Speaker 1: I think when to go back to what you talked
- 28:08Speaker 1: about where your son killed that buck and just moving
- 28:10Speaker 1: seventy five yards off. When you think about you think
- 28:14Speaker 1: about how important confidence is to so much stuff, Like
- 28:17Speaker 1: you know, I talk about this a lot, but you
- 28:18Speaker 1: know I trained bird dogs and I work with professional
- 28:21Speaker 1: dog trainers all the time, and the good ones they're
- 28:24Speaker 1: just helping dogs constantly develop confidence, new situations, new people, whatever.
- 28:30Speaker 1: And you think about white tail hunting and the one
- 28:32Speaker 1: thing that we do a lot or you see a
- 28:34Speaker 1: lot of you know, a lot of new hunters do
- 28:37Speaker 1: as they go, they give into that gotta be where
- 28:40Speaker 1: you can see mentality. Rifle hunters do this like crazy.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I mean, it's one of the reasons why the rifle
- 28:45Speaker 1: hunting or the general gun hunting success is so low
- 28:48Speaker 1: I think or could be higher, is because we just
- 28:50Speaker 1: have to be where we can see. And so you
- 28:53Speaker 1: think about if you've got that field edge. One of
- 28:56Speaker 1: the best strategies people could take is if you're if
- 28:59Speaker 1: your action dies, you just go get off of that
- 29:02Speaker 1: sucker yards and start looking go in, you know, like
- 29:06Speaker 1: you said, follow that trail and follow it back. But
- 29:10Speaker 1: the problem we have is we we were like, well,
- 29:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna set up so i can shoot that edge,
- 29:14Speaker 1: or I'm gonna set up so I'm close enough and
- 29:16Speaker 1: do both. And oftentimes you just have to go I'm
- 29:18Speaker 1: not gonna be on this edge today. I'm not sitting
- 29:20Speaker 1: over this field. I'm just gonna move in a little
- 29:22Speaker 1: bit and I'm gonna be looking the opposite way. I'm
- 29:24Speaker 1: gonna look back into the cover and I'm gonna see
- 29:27Speaker 1: what those you are doing and you see him. When
- 29:29Speaker 1: you see him staging, it's just obvious. You know, you
- 29:33Speaker 1: see him work through one way, or it works through
- 29:35Speaker 1: another way, or you know he's making a rub here,
- 29:37Speaker 1: and all of a sudden you see the buck come
- 29:38Speaker 1: up from the other side and they meet up for
- 29:40Speaker 1: a while, and you just look at it and go,
- 29:43Speaker 1: that's just where they're they're they're just they're comfortable mingling
- 29:45Speaker 1: there in dayly, those spots are money. Yeah, that's it's
- 29:50Speaker 1: so fun to be in those spots too, because like
- 29:51Speaker 1: you said, they're comfortable there. They know they're good. They're
- 29:54Speaker 1: in their mind they're good. They're they're not walking out
- 29:56Speaker 1: like we see him so many times, skinnes nervous, on edge.
- 30:00Speaker 1: They just they know they're in a spot that they're
- 30:02Speaker 1: good to go. They've been doing it on a routine.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That's the staging area where it's a sanctuary in their mind.
- 30:07Speaker 1: They feel comfortable and they just kind of like you said,
- 30:09Speaker 1: congregate there, chill waiting on that soun, crawl down and um,
- 30:14Speaker 1: it's just a it's a lot of fun to to
- 30:16Speaker 1: just to discover those spots. When you find that spot,
- 30:19Speaker 1: you know you've got something and that's the spot where
- 30:21Speaker 1: stuff's gonna happen and and um, yeah, that's where my
- 30:24Speaker 1: phone hunting nap is full of those kind of spots
- 30:27Speaker 1: that did I just look forward to every year when
- 30:29Speaker 1: the wind gets right and and everything's lining up to
- 30:32Speaker 1: get into those spots. And um, that's when you're on
- 30:35Speaker 1: the edge of your your stand whatever it is, because
- 30:37Speaker 1: it's it's getting ready to happen. Yeah, you get. You know,
- 30:40Speaker 1: we talked about this all the time. You know, the
- 30:41Speaker 1: first SIT's the best in the stand or you know,
- 30:44Speaker 1: that's the mobile hunting strategy is so so popular for
- 30:47Speaker 1: partially for this reason, but really one of the benefits.
- 30:51Speaker 1: We don't talk about getting into a spot like that
- 30:53Speaker 1: when you talk about where dear comfortable you they're easier
- 30:57Speaker 1: to hunt like they're just not you know, you talk
- 30:59Speaker 1: about that littleknife ridge. You're talking about where that that
- 31:01Speaker 1: feeds up to that food source. They're traveling in a
- 31:03Speaker 1: certain way, they're using the wind and they're looking and
- 31:06Speaker 1: they're they're not expecting danger there the way they are
- 31:09Speaker 1: when they pop into that food plot. Or you know,
- 31:12Speaker 1: over in Wisconsin where we hunt, baiting is legal and
- 31:17Speaker 1: if you just put a trail camera, I don't you
- 31:19Speaker 1: don't even you don't have to have any corn in
- 31:21Speaker 1: front of it, or you put a new ladder stand up.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I think those dey are so used to walking into
- 31:27Speaker 1: like oh, there's another corn pile here, there's a camera there,
- 31:29Speaker 1: there's a ladder stand twenty yards away. And if you
- 31:32Speaker 1: tip them off like I I do really well over
- 31:35Speaker 1: there showing up and hanging stands in places that they're
- 31:39Speaker 1: not associating anything with humans, and I just think they
- 31:42Speaker 1: just they get to it. There's like a certain set
- 31:45Speaker 1: of you know, factors in in in a spot that
- 31:48Speaker 1: they just go, oh, I've seen that before. I've seen
- 31:51Speaker 1: this before. Every time I come into this there's there's
- 31:54Speaker 1: bad smells here, and they're just more on edge, like
- 31:57Speaker 1: just like that little kill plot you sit over and
- 31:59Speaker 1: over and over again, and like, yeah, it can be
- 32:01Speaker 1: a producer all season long. But I think you're also
- 32:04Speaker 1: just tipping your hat to them, like like they know, okay, this,
- 32:09Speaker 1: this is this is a more dangerous place than that
- 32:11Speaker 1: spot I like back on that knob over on the
- 32:14Speaker 1: hill that nobody seems to come into. Yeah. Absolutely, you know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: people don't realize that those deer about the time, we
- 32:22Speaker 1: feel like we've got them patterned, you know, those deer,
- 32:24Speaker 1: we've got us patterned. You know, they pattern us and
- 32:27Speaker 1: and get us on a routine just as easy. So,
- 32:29Speaker 1: like you said, it's so important to not let them
- 32:32Speaker 1: get you in a routine and not always slipping from
- 32:35Speaker 1: the same way, not always follow the same trails in,
- 32:38Speaker 1: same trails out you know, do um and you just
- 32:41Speaker 1: trying different things, you know, don't don't keep playing the
- 32:43Speaker 1: same game each time, and just let those near you
- 32:46Speaker 1: know pattern you um, get in that spot where they
- 32:49Speaker 1: never see it coming. And UM, it's that's a fun
- 32:52Speaker 1: spot to be for sure. It is. So when you're
- 32:55Speaker 1: talking late October maybe early November, and you're talking about
- 32:58Speaker 1: calling what what do you what you going with here? Rattling?
- 33:01Speaker 1: What are you doing? Yeah, rattling for me is just
- 33:04Speaker 1: because of the volume that you can produce with rattling horns.
- 33:08Speaker 1: That's kind of been the thing for me. Rattling with
- 33:10Speaker 1: running mixed in and um again, I'll just get into
- 33:14Speaker 1: some of those areas again, late late October, early November. Um,
- 33:18Speaker 1: you're gonna see a lot of those young bucks running.
- 33:20Speaker 1: They're just a young year and a half old bucks whatever,
- 33:22Speaker 1: and they're just running wide open, chasing every slick head
- 33:26Speaker 1: they see. Um. But I like to put those horns
- 33:29Speaker 1: together and start that calling, just because I want that
- 33:32Speaker 1: buck to think, hey, you know what, maybe maybe there
- 33:34Speaker 1: is something going on this time. You know, they hear
- 33:36Speaker 1: all the commotion and the bucks chasing, and a lot
- 33:39Speaker 1: of times I feel like they're just laying over there,
- 33:40Speaker 1: just chilling, um, waiting on time to be right or
- 33:44Speaker 1: get the right smell they aren't waiting for. But um, again,
- 33:47Speaker 1: just curiosity. You know, a lot of times that's all
- 33:49Speaker 1: it takes. Just get that buck on his feet and
- 33:51Speaker 1: getting come and check you out. Just a curiosity and
- 33:54Speaker 1: get him cruising over your way. And again I'm not
- 33:58Speaker 1: often trying to call him out into a field and
- 34:00Speaker 1: you know all that stuff. It's just that a little bit,
- 34:02Speaker 1: a little bit action in some of those spots. That again,
- 34:05Speaker 1: that that you know that they're comfortable hanging out in
- 34:08Speaker 1: our spots, that they've proven the trail cameras or whatever
- 34:12Speaker 1: to to frequent, and um, just letting them know there's
- 34:15Speaker 1: a story going on over here. Everybody loves a good fighting,
- 34:17Speaker 1: so that's kind of the the thing, you know, I
- 34:19Speaker 1: want that that big buck to know that not only
- 34:21Speaker 1: are these young bucks overre chasing your dos. Um, now
- 34:24Speaker 1: there's some stuff happening and they're fighting over though is
- 34:27Speaker 1: something is intensified And again just painting that picture. Uh,
- 34:30Speaker 1: and it's again you know people after you call them
- 34:33Speaker 1: up every time. Heck, no, man, there's more times than
- 34:35Speaker 1: not you don't. But when it's happening, Um, it's so fun.
- 34:39Speaker 1: And it it's usually once a year from me when
- 34:42Speaker 1: I'll rattle antlers and put them down. Here comes a
- 34:45Speaker 1: buck and then you let him go off and give
- 34:47Speaker 1: me a while and rattle again, and it's just it's
- 34:49Speaker 1: just one of those bucks at that peak curiosity moment.
- 34:51Speaker 1: And uh again, nine times out of ten, it's gonna
- 34:55Speaker 1: be that small guy. But every once in a while
- 34:57Speaker 1: you pick it up and and uh play the game,
- 34:59Speaker 1: paint the picture and a good buck of step out.
- 35:01Speaker 1: I saw it, uh several years ago, hunting a little
- 35:04Speaker 1: public piece on the edge of swamp and it was
- 35:06Speaker 1: just a piece where everything's cruises through and uh rattled antlers, Uh,
- 35:11Speaker 1: running a little bit and had a can call tip
- 35:13Speaker 1: the can call over and I mean it was under
- 35:16Speaker 1: a minute and Uh, this buck comes cruising up looking
- 35:18Speaker 1: and it's just that thick stuff you're talking about. And
- 35:21Speaker 1: I just came right up through the edge that stuff
- 35:23Speaker 1: looking got to shoot him and fell over it right
- 35:25Speaker 1: there in front of me. And so again, calling is
- 35:28Speaker 1: not a strategy that's gonna work every time. It's just
- 35:30Speaker 1: another tool tool in your bag of tricks and um.
- 35:33Speaker 1: But it's a time of year, I think again, late October,
- 35:36Speaker 1: early November, when uh it works the best. You know,
- 35:39Speaker 1: I think in my in my experience where I hunt,
- 35:41Speaker 1: are you are you doing mornings mostly? Are you doing
- 35:43Speaker 1: mornings and evenings? I'll start Yeah, at that time of year,
- 35:47Speaker 1: you know, right, is work cracking in on the end
- 35:49Speaker 1: of the month, Um, you know, heading into November, I'll
- 35:51Speaker 1: start hitting those morning set for sure, you know, just
- 35:54Speaker 1: because I am digging into a little deeper areas that
- 35:57Speaker 1: I can get. I mean calling wise, like rattling wise called. Yeah,
- 36:01Speaker 1: you know, I'll call either that that ten point I
- 36:03Speaker 1: just mentioned that that I killed wasn't morning, you know,
- 36:05Speaker 1: the first forty five minutes a daylight and uh, and
- 36:07Speaker 1: so just call them right in place, right time. So yeah,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I can't say whether one, you know, morning or afternoon
- 36:13Speaker 1: is worked better. I've I've experienced both and and maybe
- 36:16Speaker 1: even more more so in the mornings. You know. Uh,
- 36:19Speaker 1: if I look back and say, a lot of the
- 36:20Speaker 1: times that I've called it, it's been those morning sets,
- 36:23Speaker 1: you know. Uh so, yeah, I'll hit him on either side,
- 36:28Speaker 1: morning or afternoon. When you're when you're rattling, do you
- 36:31Speaker 1: do you always just start out with a little tickle
- 36:33Speaker 1: and then work your way up. Yeah, And and for
- 36:37Speaker 1: me it's it's very short. You know, a lot of
- 36:39Speaker 1: guys get the get the antlers and they're just busting
- 36:43Speaker 1: antlers and just going at it and just getting fired
- 36:46Speaker 1: up and going you know, minute two minutes or whatever.
- 36:48Speaker 1: But um, you know, you look at if you've seen
- 36:52Speaker 1: bucks fight, I mean, there's not a lot of nonstock.
- 36:55Speaker 1: They're not just rattling and rattling. Rattling there, rattling. Then
- 36:59Speaker 1: they lock up and then it's more you're stomping the ground,
- 37:01Speaker 1: it's leaves getting shoved around. It's more shoving match at
- 37:04Speaker 1: that point, just to tickle. And then they rattled together
- 37:07Speaker 1: and they bust loose and they'll head together again and
- 37:09Speaker 1: they lock up. And so um, yeah, I start off
- 37:12Speaker 1: light and then uh and I work up to you know,
- 37:14Speaker 1: a substantial fight. But for me, it's it's really just
- 37:17Speaker 1: keeping it short, just to light you know, tickle the horns,
- 37:20Speaker 1: keep it quick, you know, fift twenty seconds or whatever,
- 37:23Speaker 1: and stop and and get ready because I mean, if
- 37:26Speaker 1: you're in that area where it's happening, Um man, I've
- 37:29Speaker 1: gotten busted so many times, you know, sitting there for
- 37:31Speaker 1: thirty forty five seconds a minute with horns and just rattling,
- 37:34Speaker 1: and you walk in and get busted. So just a
- 37:36Speaker 1: quick little fight, let them know something's come together and
- 37:38Speaker 1: put their heads together and then uh, hang them up
- 37:41Speaker 1: and get ready. So you you try to add in
- 37:44Speaker 1: other other sound elements into your rattling sequences. I will,
- 37:48Speaker 1: I'll I'll throw some grunts in and um, you know,
- 37:51Speaker 1: just um typically i'm in the tree, if I'm on
- 37:54Speaker 1: the ground, I'll stomp the ground and different stuff like that.
- 37:56Speaker 1: But um, you know, I know there's a lot of
- 37:58Speaker 1: stuff I'll see guys do that will um you know,
- 38:01Speaker 1: as far as breaking brush or breaking branches and stuff
- 38:05Speaker 1: and all those things, you know, adding you know, trying
- 38:08Speaker 1: to add some real realism to it. But um, for me,
- 38:11Speaker 1: it's you know, just grunting. Um, you know, and and
- 38:16Speaker 1: hitting those horns together. And then like I said, when
- 38:18Speaker 1: I wrap up, I'll tip a can call over. I
- 38:20Speaker 1: know a lot of guys are laugh at a can
- 38:22Speaker 1: style call, you know. And again never, you know, never
- 38:25Speaker 1: works every time. But I've had enough hunts that they
- 38:28Speaker 1: have come in on a string that I'll that I'll
- 38:30Speaker 1: use that again, just telling that picture you gotta fight
- 38:32Speaker 1: over here, you've got two bucks going at it um
- 38:35Speaker 1: and then having that that can call just tells, hey,
- 38:37Speaker 1: there's a there's a there's a dough that they're they're
- 38:39Speaker 1: fighting for, you know, and just try to paint that picture. Yeah,
- 38:43Speaker 1: I think it's a real eye opener when you when
- 38:47Speaker 1: you see a real buck fight close. Yeah, you know,
- 38:50Speaker 1: I mean I think about it. You know, if you
- 38:52Speaker 1: if you hunt, you know a lot of people who
- 38:55Speaker 1: hunt out east or who hunt public land generally have
- 38:58Speaker 1: probably heard their neighbors rattling like and when you hear it,
- 39:01Speaker 1: it's like listening to a politician speak. You're just like,
- 39:04Speaker 1: this is not. There's bullshit here, Like, this is not
- 39:07Speaker 1: it's not the right soundscape, you know, And when you
- 39:10Speaker 1: see like you know, you said, everybody loves a good fight.
- 39:13Speaker 1: The first one I ever saw. I was in high
- 39:16Speaker 1: school and I was on this ridge this valley below me,
- 39:19Speaker 1: and I heard a fight breakout below me, and I'm
- 39:23Speaker 1: glassen and I picked up these two bucks and at
- 39:25Speaker 1: the time they were huge to me. They were probably
- 39:27Speaker 1: like two year olds, but they were bigger than the
- 39:30Speaker 1: spikes and four keys we were usually targeting. And those
- 39:33Speaker 1: two bucks started fighting, and because of my vantage point
- 39:36Speaker 1: I had, I saw like nine deer run in and
- 39:39Speaker 1: watch this thing. It was like one of the most
- 39:42Speaker 1: amazing experiences I've had in the woods. And it made
- 39:45Speaker 1: me realize because we had tried rattling, and it made
- 39:48Speaker 1: me realize, like, man, when these deer actually go at it,
- 39:51Speaker 1: Like you said, it's a real short duration lock up,
- 39:54Speaker 1: but it's loud and there's a lot going on, like
- 39:58Speaker 1: you know that that was in October, so they were
- 40:00Speaker 1: as you know, the leaf litter was out and you know,
- 40:02Speaker 1: breaking branches. It just opens your eyes, like, yeah, if
- 40:06Speaker 1: you're a buck there, like we give them too much
- 40:09Speaker 1: credit a lot of times for being smart, I think,
- 40:11Speaker 1: but they're they're cautious. And if they're sitting there listening
- 40:14Speaker 1: and they're like okay, this just they're probably not thinking, man,
- 40:18Speaker 1: this is weird that their antlers are hitting together. But
- 40:19Speaker 1: I can't hear their hoofs on the ground. But there's
- 40:22Speaker 1: probably something just like a turkey when it walks in
- 40:24Speaker 1: and your decoy shines wrong. It's not like that's a
- 40:27Speaker 1: fake bird. It's just like, I don't feel good about
- 40:30Speaker 1: this anymore. I'm going away, you know what I mean, Like,
- 40:32Speaker 1: there's probably not like a whole lot of thought to it.
- 40:34Speaker 1: And and so I think a lot of times people
- 40:36Speaker 1: don't sell their calling sessions. I mean, man, I was
- 40:39Speaker 1: sitting in uh. I was sitting over a river in uh,
- 40:44Speaker 1: North Dakota, probably I don't know, three or four years
- 40:47Speaker 1: ago in mid October, and I had these two bucks
- 40:50Speaker 1: come down to cross to me and they met in
- 40:54Speaker 1: the river and they started fighting in the river. And
- 40:57Speaker 1: I'm telling you, it was like it sounded like they
- 41:01Speaker 1: were storming the beach at Normandy. Man. There was rocks
- 41:03Speaker 1: just like cracking and splashing, and it was like fifty
- 41:09Speaker 1: thousand times louder than most of our rattling sessions would
- 41:13Speaker 1: ever even consider being, you know, and it was it
- 41:16Speaker 1: just it was like, oh, here's to pound animals fighting.
- 41:21Speaker 1: This is not you know, like this is not play right,
- 41:23Speaker 1: Like these these dudes are trying to kill each other,
- 41:25Speaker 1: and the sound to it, it's just so vastly different
- 41:28Speaker 1: than what we probably put into most of our average
- 41:30Speaker 1: calling sessions. Absolutely, yeah, yeah, there's there's certainly a death
- 41:35Speaker 1: difference in those shoving matches. You know that those those bucks,
- 41:40Speaker 1: so you know when they come out of velvet, you know,
- 41:43Speaker 1: back earlier on in the month and and you know
- 41:46Speaker 1: September even, you know, and they stripped that velvet and
- 41:49Speaker 1: they would go from being buddies to to start, you know,
- 41:52Speaker 1: just establishing who's the boss, and you know they're just
- 41:54Speaker 1: kind of shoving matches there. But yeah, like you're talking
- 41:56Speaker 1: about that in the river throw down death match. I mean,
- 42:00Speaker 1: that's that's where there's some serious commotion going on. And
- 42:04Speaker 1: so you know, again it just comes down to what
- 42:07Speaker 1: you're you know, trying to tell what the story and
- 42:09Speaker 1: what kind of you know, audible you need to cast
- 42:12Speaker 1: as far as you're you know, how far you need
- 42:14Speaker 1: to get that sound out there, banging on that again
- 42:17Speaker 1: and um. But again for me is making those calling
- 42:21Speaker 1: sequences short, um, putting together that sound and then and
- 42:25Speaker 1: then hang it up, because man, so many times. I
- 42:26Speaker 1: can tell you so many more times than not. I'll
- 42:28Speaker 1: get I'll get caught in the past anyway, I've gotten
- 42:31Speaker 1: busted sitting there standing with the horns in my hand,
- 42:34Speaker 1: and here he comes walking out looking and they're coming
- 42:36Speaker 1: in looking, you know, like you said, curious. So we're
- 42:38Speaker 1: on the lookout when they're coming in, and uh, I
- 42:42Speaker 1: just don't get don't get caught with your grunt call
- 42:44Speaker 1: and your hand calling, your antlers in your hand and
- 42:46Speaker 1: get thought looking, you know. So yeah, it's it's it's
- 42:51Speaker 1: definitely something to think about. It. It's an interesting thing.
- 42:54Speaker 1: I mean, I think one of the great intangibles of
- 42:57Speaker 1: this when you're talking about calling in the pre rutting
- 43:00Speaker 1: during the rut is when you you know, if you
- 43:04Speaker 1: go said, I'll never forget I I sat during a
- 43:06Speaker 1: rifle season in Minnesota years ago on this property and
- 43:10Speaker 1: the neighbor was rattling and it was like once every
- 43:13Speaker 1: ten minutes that guy would bang the antlers together and
- 43:17Speaker 1: create this fake fight, and it would be like two
- 43:19Speaker 1: o'clock in the afternoon, six days into guns season. I'm like, dude,
- 43:23Speaker 1: and and you know, like when you're talking about that
- 43:27Speaker 1: buck that you rattled in and you you get close
- 43:30Speaker 1: to the swamp and you get in the right spot,
- 43:32Speaker 1: and then the timing feels right. It's just like it's
- 43:35Speaker 1: a it's a hard thing to talk about because we
- 43:38Speaker 1: sell these ideas like we'll go and rattle in the
- 43:40Speaker 1: pre rut or the first couple of days in November.
- 43:43Speaker 1: But the people who really know what they're doing with
- 43:45Speaker 1: this stuff, they're sitting there going, this is the right time,
- 43:48Speaker 1: like this this I can just feel it in the air.
- 43:50Speaker 1: It's cool. It's ten minutes into first light and I
- 43:53Speaker 1: can see really well. Or you know, I was, You're
- 43:56Speaker 1: on stand in the afternoon and it's a little later
- 43:58Speaker 1: and then the clouds roll in and the light changes
- 44:01Speaker 1: and the wind shifts, so you go, just this is
- 44:03Speaker 1: They're gonna be on their feet right now. This is
- 44:05Speaker 1: where I'm callable. And so it's a it's a really
- 44:08Speaker 1: fun thing to talk about. But I always just want
- 44:11Speaker 1: to caution people, like understand that you know you said
- 44:14Speaker 1: this multiple times that this is not like a guarantee,
- 44:16Speaker 1: and it is not. I mean, it's it might be
- 44:18Speaker 1: like a ten percent success right maybe depending on where
- 44:21Speaker 1: you hunt, but you can up those odds if you
- 44:25Speaker 1: if you call like deer actually sound and you're just
- 44:29Speaker 1: reading those conditions going, you know, two o'clock in the afternoon,
- 44:32Speaker 1: sun's high overhead. I haven't seen a freaking song bird
- 44:35Speaker 1: in three hours. It's not the time, but six thirty
- 44:39Speaker 1: at night and it's you know, get a little darker
- 44:41Speaker 1: and that you know, the attempts drop twenty degrees or
- 44:44Speaker 1: then you're like, okay, now now this is the time. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 44:50Speaker 1: And I think of another hunt from several years back
- 44:52Speaker 1: that again talking about the can call. Um, I don't
- 44:57Speaker 1: know that I've ever heard. I might have heard dear blee,
- 44:59Speaker 1: I've heard dear grunt do different things, um, but I
- 45:02Speaker 1: don't know I've ever heard of can you know a
- 45:04Speaker 1: deer sounding just like a can call, you know, long
- 45:06Speaker 1: drawn out deal. That's why some people say it's no good.
- 45:10Speaker 1: But I was hunting in the timber several years ago
- 45:12Speaker 1: gunn season, sitting up there with my bowl, and I
- 45:15Speaker 1: had watched it looked like a spiker or forky something
- 45:18Speaker 1: just going back and forth chasing this dog again, just
- 45:20Speaker 1: like good gosh man, leave her alone whatever. He's just
- 45:23Speaker 1: going nuts back and forth over the little saddleite in
- 45:26Speaker 1: front of over the ridge doing their thing. But then
- 45:28Speaker 1: one time I look up and I heard crashing again,
- 45:30Speaker 1: and I look up and I see some handler. I
- 45:33Speaker 1: put my buydose up and I say, and that's not
- 45:34Speaker 1: the spiker. And he's by himself, and he had come
- 45:36Speaker 1: in looking he heard the sound of all the commotion,
- 45:39Speaker 1: and I took He was probably eighty two hundred yards
- 45:41Speaker 1: out and I just tipped that can call, pulled out
- 45:43Speaker 1: in my pocket, tipped it over and I look up
- 45:45Speaker 1: and it caught us attention. Here he comes down that
- 45:47Speaker 1: ridge I was sitting on. He walked yards and he'd
- 45:51Speaker 1: stopped and excuse me. I tipped the can call over again.
- 45:55Speaker 1: He'd get a read on it. Here he comes to
- 45:57Speaker 1: the twenty five yards and man, I just kept it up.
- 45:58Speaker 1: He again walked twenty twenty yards. He look up, ears
- 46:02Speaker 1: come up, looking and listening. Hit him. I think I
- 46:04Speaker 1: did three or four, you know, it licks on that
- 46:06Speaker 1: can call and he marched up there and turned broadside.
- 46:08Speaker 1: I shot him right there at eighteen yards maybe, but
- 46:11Speaker 1: he what's the classic example of that deer that was
- 46:15Speaker 1: here in the sound of some rutting activity, he heard
- 46:18Speaker 1: that chasing and again a spike buck chasing the doll around,
- 46:22Speaker 1: and he heard that, he came looking for that, he
- 46:23Speaker 1: came to investigating, he knew what was up, and then
- 46:25Speaker 1: just intercepted him with that can call and put him
- 46:28Speaker 1: in there and made the shot. Nice buck and and
- 46:30Speaker 1: so um again, no call works every time. Don't let
- 46:34Speaker 1: somebody tell you they do. But I like that in
- 46:37Speaker 1: the in the toolbag, just because there is a time
- 46:40Speaker 1: when they will and um, you know, take their temperature.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Use those calls. See what you got early November, you know,
- 46:46Speaker 1: early part of the rut. It's um all the time.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Oftentimes it's excuse me, just what you need to get
- 46:54Speaker 1: him in there where you want him with that boat.
- 46:56Speaker 1: That what you said there about that buck here and
- 47:00Speaker 1: that little guy chasing around. I read something years and
- 47:03Speaker 1: years ago that Scott Bestel wrote in Field and Stream,
- 47:06Speaker 1: where I think it was Scott Bestl where he said
- 47:09Speaker 1: the best deer call you could probably ever have would
- 47:11Speaker 1: be the sound of deer running. Yeah, and I mean
- 47:14Speaker 1: it's just but again, you know, and that's the strategy
- 47:17Speaker 1: people use walking into their stands and stuff. You know,
- 47:19Speaker 1: if you if and I firmly believe in it, I
- 47:21Speaker 1: believe in the same way I don't know if you
- 47:23Speaker 1: do this or not, but I carry a mouth call,
- 47:25Speaker 1: a turkey mouth call with me a lot. And if
- 47:27Speaker 1: I have to walk in and there's leaves and it's calm,
- 47:29Speaker 1: I just scratched my way in and I yelped softly.
- 47:32Speaker 1: And I've had I've had two awesome things happened there.
- 47:35Speaker 1: I've had deer be really close to me, and I've
- 47:36Speaker 1: called in turkeys when I've done it. And but but
- 47:41Speaker 1: just sounding you know, sounding like the woods is really important. Um.
- 47:47Speaker 1: When you let's let's say you strike out on this
- 47:51Speaker 1: late October right away in November pattern and you're moving
- 47:54Speaker 1: to the just chasing, chasing phase crazy November seven eight,
- 48:00Speaker 1: things should be busting open. Where are you sitting? Yeah,
- 48:03Speaker 1: So that's kind of the deal for me. November twelve
- 48:06Speaker 1: has always has become my my hot days used to be, uh,
- 48:10Speaker 1: you know, when I lived in Motana, I had a
- 48:12Speaker 1: streak of November eight being the day to go to
- 48:14Speaker 1: day for me and just killed bucks on that day
- 48:16Speaker 1: for a number of years. And then when I got
- 48:19Speaker 1: back the Tennessee, it became November twelve through thirteen, fourteens
- 48:23Speaker 1: right in there. And so that's kind of where I've
- 48:26Speaker 1: looked and where I you know, had some good success
- 48:28Speaker 1: here West. Gonna see you over the recent years. But uh,
- 48:32Speaker 1: in those couple of years, I've noticed that, you know,
- 48:34Speaker 1: just catching those deer slipping along a couple of different
- 48:38Speaker 1: transition lines. And you know, I've got some uh thick
- 48:41Speaker 1: cover that I love to sit in several spots, and
- 48:43Speaker 1: it's just that that ticket where I know those doves
- 48:45Speaker 1: are going to hang out and they're gonna be in
- 48:47Speaker 1: there going there to bed, and those bucks have just
- 48:50Speaker 1: come up cruising that that um getting that transition line
- 48:53Speaker 1: and he'll be on that down one side and he
- 48:55Speaker 1: can just cruise up that line and and uh check
- 48:58Speaker 1: that area for anything happening. That just it happens to
- 49:00Speaker 1: be where my tree stands at. So um two different
- 49:03Speaker 1: pieces of property that I think back on that I've
- 49:05Speaker 1: I've been successful on from that and they're both the
- 49:08Speaker 1: same situation, catching bucks slipping that that low slide of
- 49:11Speaker 1: that transition line and um that may be pinch points
- 49:14Speaker 1: that maybe just again transition lines. And I got an
- 49:18Speaker 1: oak ridge that's more open and they'body cruising through the
- 49:20Speaker 1: oak ridge. But you know, you just down down one
- 49:23Speaker 1: side of that ticket with you know, where the does
- 49:25Speaker 1: hang out. And so those are a couple of fun spots.
- 49:27Speaker 1: But again just getting getting those travel routes where that
- 49:30Speaker 1: I know that those bucks, those doves have been are
- 49:32Speaker 1: there gonna be at some point cruising in and out
- 49:34Speaker 1: of you can dang sure bet come you know November tenth, seventh,
- 49:39Speaker 1: eight tenth, and the fifteenth or whatever, that he's not
- 49:42Speaker 1: gonna be far behind you. You know, I love seeing
- 49:44Speaker 1: six seven doughs go by, and you know you're thinking, man,
- 49:47Speaker 1: why is there not a buck with him? Just give
- 49:48Speaker 1: him some time because he's coming. He won't be far behind,
- 49:50Speaker 1: and he's gonna come and just sent check that area
- 49:53Speaker 1: that they just you know, went into and bedded, you know,
- 49:55Speaker 1: and so um yeah, So I look for those transition
- 49:59Speaker 1: lines areas you know, on again on the outside lines
- 50:01Speaker 1: of those, and I'll set up shop on that just
- 50:04Speaker 1: knowing that he's gonna be on that down one side. Obviously,
- 50:07Speaker 1: you know, you gotta work the win, play the win
- 50:08Speaker 1: on those situations and and um, but looking for those
- 50:11Speaker 1: places where I know that buck can cruise that down
- 50:14Speaker 1: one side of it and he can check that whole area,
- 50:16Speaker 1: you know, and and they're so slick like that, you
- 50:18Speaker 1: know they they'll do that. And I watched the buck
- 50:20Speaker 1: come through several years ago on at low side of
- 50:22Speaker 1: the bottoms, and I watched and I saw him coming
- 50:24Speaker 1: from an hundred yards away and he would come through
- 50:27Speaker 1: and he'd have that that knows up and uh just
- 50:30Speaker 1: lip curl and he'd go and make a scrape. He
- 50:32Speaker 1: checked scrapes and licking branches. But he was just working
- 50:34Speaker 1: up that you know that low uh bottom side, you
- 50:37Speaker 1: know bottom greenbriers, all the betting gear and he was
- 50:39Speaker 1: just checking it out and so um, just catching those
- 50:42Speaker 1: bucks cruising up that line, looking and lifting. Do you
- 50:57Speaker 1: think because there's I mean, there's really kind of two
- 50:59Speaker 1: facts of rut hunting strategies right there. Is that hunt
- 51:03Speaker 1: the does strategy, And what you're talking about is playing
- 51:06Speaker 1: a doe betting area. You know a lot of people
- 51:09Speaker 1: will just go to the food sources and wait for
- 51:11Speaker 1: the doors to come out and hope they bring a
- 51:12Speaker 1: buck out with them, which which works too. But your
- 51:15Speaker 1: strategy is really doable, I think for more pressure ground
- 51:19Speaker 1: stuff like I I like that, Like personally, I like
- 51:23Speaker 1: dough betting areas and getting on the downwind side way
- 51:26Speaker 1: more than playing that food source game for rutting bucks.
- 51:31Speaker 1: But then you've got the other faction that's like, I
- 51:34Speaker 1: got this badass pinch point, I've got this funnel whatever
- 51:38Speaker 1: it is. That terrain is just like you're gonna go
- 51:40Speaker 1: right here. If you go, if you go from point
- 51:42Speaker 1: A to point B, then you've got that strategy. And
- 51:45Speaker 1: I kind of think that in my experience, the best,
- 51:50Speaker 1: the best hunting I've seen has probably been working those
- 51:53Speaker 1: doe betting areas and playing that down wind game. But
- 51:56Speaker 1: in some low density situations, are certain situations you just
- 52:00Speaker 1: can't beat that terrain feature, like if you if you
- 52:03Speaker 1: just have that confidence, like listen, I got four days
- 52:08Speaker 1: or five days or whatever. If I post up here
- 52:10Speaker 1: and the wind doesn't switch out of the north or
- 52:12Speaker 1: the west, somebody's coming through, and it's it's just kind
- 52:15Speaker 1: of it's kind of situational, you know, oh absolutely, yeah.
- 52:19Speaker 1: I think about the bottleneck that we've had off the field.
- 52:22Speaker 1: Beautiful field, but it's kind of the best of both
- 52:24Speaker 1: worlds because you can see in the fields, but you've
- 52:26Speaker 1: got an incredible bottleneck that's coming up in the timber
- 52:28Speaker 1: from a oak ridge bottleneck coming out of the bottom.
- 52:32Speaker 1: And it's money. I mean, just it's money. I mean,
- 52:36Speaker 1: when the rud comes, you can you can plan on
- 52:38Speaker 1: the doors flipping through that bottleneck. It's just a travel route, man,
- 52:41Speaker 1: They're gonna be somebody coming through there. And uh, there's
- 52:45Speaker 1: been a lot of bucks over the years, you know,
- 52:47Speaker 1: taking right there again. Um, they're not out in the
- 52:50Speaker 1: wide open for long. But when they cross, that's the
- 52:52Speaker 1: spot they're doing at that bottleneck. Cross that field pinches
- 52:55Speaker 1: down to little gap right there, and I mean it's
- 52:57Speaker 1: just a gauntlet, man. They can come through there and
- 52:59Speaker 1: and a lot of fun and those kind of spots
- 53:01Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah, those are those are kind of savior
- 53:05Speaker 1: ass situations because you can you can sit something like
- 53:09Speaker 1: that and and just have the confidence that eventually they're
- 53:13Speaker 1: coming through that that you know, playing a doe betting
- 53:16Speaker 1: area type of of hunt. So situational on the wind,
- 53:20Speaker 1: I mean, and I know everything we do is, but
- 53:23Speaker 1: some of those you just have you have to be
- 53:24Speaker 1: able to get in there, and you have to be
- 53:26Speaker 1: mindful of those doughs. You have to be mindful of
- 53:29Speaker 1: playing the wind. So it's good for you or so
- 53:31Speaker 1: it's good for him, But better for you. And it's
- 53:34Speaker 1: that to me, is like a little bit more of
- 53:35Speaker 1: a nuanced and I think that's kind of why we
- 53:37Speaker 1: lean so hard into the terrain, you know, the funnel's
- 53:40Speaker 1: pinch point strategy, because some of those are just they're
- 53:44Speaker 1: just no brainers, Like you just see them and you go, well,
- 53:47Speaker 1: if they if they want to get from this ridge
- 53:50Speaker 1: to that ridge, they're either gonna cross here, they gotta
- 53:52Speaker 1: jump forty ft across this washout. You know, like some
- 53:55Speaker 1: of that stuff is just it's so easy. But there's
- 53:57Speaker 1: like a subtlety to that dough betting areas strategy of going, Okay,
- 54:02Speaker 1: the doors are gonna come in this way, or they're
- 54:03Speaker 1: gonna be in here in this spot. He's probably coming
- 54:06Speaker 1: from that direction or that direction. He's using the wind
- 54:08Speaker 1: to his advantage, and he's using his eyes to his advantage.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Now I got to get into a position where he
- 54:13Speaker 1: thinks he's safe, but I'm close enough to shoot him,
- 54:15Speaker 1: Like it's a that's like a chess game, and that that's,
- 54:18Speaker 1: to me, is like the most fun kind of like
- 54:22Speaker 1: set up to find when you're in the rut. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 54:25Speaker 1: And you know you talked about that and just letting
- 54:27Speaker 1: that buck feel like he's good. You know, the wind's
- 54:30Speaker 1: good for him, but you can make it work as well.
- 54:33Speaker 1: And that's so huge, you know, because a lot of guys,
- 54:35Speaker 1: I think they say, oh, the wind's bad for me today. Well, man,
- 54:38Speaker 1: what is it you gotta do to make it doable
- 54:41Speaker 1: for you? Um? But still let that buck thinks, you know,
- 54:44Speaker 1: during his favor and um so I do. I like
- 54:47Speaker 1: those spots where I've got you know, a plan, a
- 54:49Speaker 1: plan base. Hey the wind is not good, Well I
- 54:51Speaker 1: can get right over here and make it good. And
- 54:53Speaker 1: just those little subtleties, man, just getting those small little moves. Um. Again,
- 54:58Speaker 1: I had a lot of cross wind st for that reason,
- 55:00Speaker 1: just knowing that, hey, this wind may bite me, you know,
- 55:04Speaker 1: but I've got this this wind of opportunity. If I
- 55:06Speaker 1: can make it, he's he's gonna feel good about it.
- 55:09Speaker 1: And I've got my opportunity has tightened up. But it's
- 55:12Speaker 1: gonna tip the odds for you know, his comfort level
- 55:15Speaker 1: to be good. But then you know, for me to
- 55:17Speaker 1: be in the right spot as well. And so again,
- 55:20Speaker 1: just sometimes you've gotta be thinking about those is planning
- 55:22Speaker 1: B and C? Is it still doable or am, I'm
- 55:24Speaker 1: just gonna throw it all out when the plan A
- 55:26Speaker 1: doesn't work. And so finding those spots where you've got
- 55:29Speaker 1: a couple different options to make it happen. Even if
- 55:32Speaker 1: you're you know, banging off the ground, if you're just
- 55:34Speaker 1: getting in, you know, whatever, you gotta do. Position yourself.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Like you said, that's what's some fun about it. It's
- 55:38Speaker 1: just a little chess match. It just making that move.
- 55:41Speaker 1: He thinks he's good, but he has no doubt the
- 55:43Speaker 1: idea that you just shifted seventy five yards over around
- 55:46Speaker 1: that side of the pinch point and now you got him,
- 55:48Speaker 1: you know. So that's a whole heck of a lot
- 55:50Speaker 1: of fun, it is. And you know, I think one
- 55:52Speaker 1: thing that happens a lot with Rutt Hunts is you know,
- 55:55Speaker 1: we preached this all day, said and which is you
- 55:59Speaker 1: know you should be doing that if you have the
- 56:01Speaker 1: right set up. Absolutely, But there's also this reality where
- 56:05Speaker 1: you go, I'm going into that river crossing tomorrow and
- 56:08Speaker 1: I'm going into this pinch point and I'm gonna sit
- 56:10Speaker 1: all day. I'm bringing my coffee and bringing my sandwiches,
- 56:12Speaker 1: um and I'm gonna find the end of the internet.
- 56:15Speaker 1: By the end of the day. I'm gonna do everything
- 56:16Speaker 1: I can to stay there, and then at eleven o'clock
- 56:19Speaker 1: the wind switches and you go, well, he could still
- 56:21Speaker 1: come from this way or that way. Like, man, you
- 56:24Speaker 1: gotta know when to pull the plug. And it, like
- 56:27Speaker 1: you said, if you have that backup option, pulling the
- 56:30Speaker 1: plug is is easier. If you don't have that and
- 56:32Speaker 1: you talk yourself into sitting there, then you might get
- 56:34Speaker 1: in trouble, you know, And it's it's an in the
- 56:37Speaker 1: moment thing. And I think, I think what you really
- 56:40Speaker 1: learned when you hunt a lot of different places and
- 56:42Speaker 1: you go to a lot of public land where there's
- 56:43Speaker 1: like just there's just stuff out of your control, you know,
- 56:46Speaker 1: like people coming in and what you just you get
- 56:48Speaker 1: kind of used to that that mentality like Okay, this
- 56:52Speaker 1: one went south, what's next. It's not you know, it's
- 56:55Speaker 1: not going to take you out of the game. You're
- 56:56Speaker 1: just like, Okay, well, you know a lot of times
- 56:59Speaker 1: when I go hunt and ship goes wrong and I
- 57:01Speaker 1: gotta do something else. And if you expect that and
- 57:03Speaker 1: you have that plan B built in place, you know,
- 57:05Speaker 1: like there's just times where you sometimes you gotta get
- 57:08Speaker 1: out of that tree and go build a natural ground
- 57:09Speaker 1: line like you know, or just just whatever to stay
- 57:13Speaker 1: out there. But to make those decisions and commit to
- 57:16Speaker 1: them versus talking yourself into righting out a bad program.
- 57:19Speaker 1: It's important, and it's it's tough. It's tougher than people think. Yeah. Yeah,
- 57:23Speaker 1: some many getting times guys were like, well, heck, I'm
- 57:25Speaker 1: I'm here. I might as well just sit here and
- 57:28Speaker 1: right it out, knowing the winds were holding up into
- 57:30Speaker 1: the completely wrong spot. But it just comes down to
- 57:33Speaker 1: laziness and and you know, I don't want to move,
- 57:35Speaker 1: but I don't want to pull my set down or
- 57:37Speaker 1: I don't want to go back to the truck or whatever.
- 57:39Speaker 1: You know, they come up with a million different excused
- 57:41Speaker 1: to just to keep doing what they're doing even though
- 57:42Speaker 1: they know it's wrong. Um and and that's that's so
- 57:45Speaker 1: much what we've got to say. You know what, this
- 57:47Speaker 1: is wrong, it's no good. It's not gonna happen here.
- 57:50Speaker 1: And if it does happen here, I'm busted. And and
- 57:53Speaker 1: you know you gotta just again, you gotta figure out
- 57:55Speaker 1: how to roll with the punches. No one to hold them,
- 57:56Speaker 1: no one to fold them. And uh so, uh that's
- 58:00Speaker 1: that's huge, you know, having that just at mindset where
- 58:03Speaker 1: you're willing to do something different. I think that's a
- 58:04Speaker 1: lot of it. A lot of guys go, oh this
- 58:07Speaker 1: just sucks. Man, this this is no good. I'm out. Um.
- 58:10Speaker 1: But you know, no one say hey, why is this
- 58:13Speaker 1: not good? And how can I make it different? How
- 58:15Speaker 1: can I make it better? What do I need to
- 58:16Speaker 1: do to improve my odds for success? And being willing
- 58:19Speaker 1: to do that? You know, there's a lot of guys
- 58:20Speaker 1: and you leave a lot of guys behind just by that,
- 58:22Speaker 1: you know, having that mentality. Uh, we got a lot
- 58:25Speaker 1: of them again, they're just they're just lazy. They want
- 58:27Speaker 1: the easy hunt, they want the easy set, they want
- 58:28Speaker 1: the easy action. When it doesn't happen, they're gone. Um.
- 58:32Speaker 1: But man, if we can realize how there's a better way,
- 58:34Speaker 1: there's another way. Uh, it's just gonna be for odds
- 58:37Speaker 1: up for sure. Yeah. I I really think, I really
- 58:41Speaker 1: think that the message of finding a way to stay
- 58:43Speaker 1: in the woods longer and not not you. So we
- 58:46Speaker 1: do this a lot where we make excuses to go
- 58:48Speaker 1: out because we kind of like the wind switch. While
- 58:51Speaker 1: it's it's it's the smart thing to not hunt or
- 58:54Speaker 1: it's seventy degrees on November six, and it's to you know,
- 58:58Speaker 1: it's the smart thing to not hunt. And I was like,
- 59:01Speaker 1: just go go something. Maybe don't go to your best spot,
- 59:04Speaker 1: but go. And I know you've seen this and I'll
- 59:06Speaker 1: never forget. I mean, I've told this story a million times.
- 59:08Speaker 1: The biggest buck I ever killed in my life was
- 59:10Speaker 1: on public land in Nebraska. And that morning, the amount
- 59:15Speaker 1: of trucks that came into that property we were hunting
- 59:18Speaker 1: was ridiculous. It's a there's about as actually like hunting
- 59:23Speaker 1: cover in there, and we had like eight vehicles come in,
- 59:26Speaker 1: and there were other guys camp they're already and so
- 59:29Speaker 1: you know, the the hunter per square mile. There was nuts, right,
- 59:33Speaker 1: guys rattling whatever. But I went out and that morning
- 59:38Speaker 1: climbed up the ridge, went to the back of the property,
- 59:41Speaker 1: killed the biggest buck in my life, saw three other
- 59:43Speaker 1: good ones. One of the guys we walked in from Michigan,
- 59:46Speaker 1: who just happened to be walking in close to us,
- 59:48Speaker 1: killed a great buck, like a seventeen inch wide eight pointer,
- 59:51Speaker 1: and then my buddy killed an eight pointer on the
- 59:53Speaker 1: same ridge. And what was interesting was I shot my
- 59:57Speaker 1: buck early, you know, I mean I had you know,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: it happened pretty quickly, and I let him. I thought
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I smoked him, but I let him layout a little while.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: And so then when I found him, you know, it
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: was it was probably like I guess ten, maybe eleven
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: o'clock in the morning when I walked back to camp
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: to go get my dear cart and go back and
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: get this buck. And partially because I didn't want to
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: screw up my buddy because he was down the ridge.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: But when we got back to camp, those trucks were gone.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: There was one guy left, and so we watched, you know,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: eight trucks come in there in the dark. It was
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: a freaking parade and all these headlamps going out and on.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: This was like November seven. By the time I get
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: back at mid morning, eleven o'clock, they're gone, and those
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: bucks are still out there chasing those doughs, you know,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: and so and it's it's really I think, you know,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: when I talked to guys like you, and I talked
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: to any May and Eddie Claypool and these people who
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: are just freaking killers out there, that that ability to
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: just kind of go, okay, well, this is what I
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: do now that this didn't work is huge. The ability
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: to adapt and just not not only like not make
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: the excuses, just not get down, just go Okay, the
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: circumstances have changed, and now I'm gonna do this. It's
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: it really kind of separates the deer watchers from the
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: deer killers a lot of times. Yeah. Absolutely. And you
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: know you've talked in recent podcasts and over the years
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: about water access and moving water recently, and um, I
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: love that because that's a lot of my strategy is.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: You know, you you've got some of these guys, like
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: you said, you got headlamps going everywhere, you got trucks
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: at the parking lot. But so many times I'll slip
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: in via the use of a kayak, water access whatever,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and they're banging around up there doing their deal, and
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: I'm going under the radar, slipping in by that kayak
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: down within the banks. And so many times I've just
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: walked in or cruised in on the back side of
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: that stuff and let those guys all that activity just
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: pushing right down to me. And uh, like I said,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: those dear no when they're coming and going, Man, they
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: they pattern us. They know, Hey, nine ten o'clock they're gone,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: you know, heading back for chicken biscuit, and uh, the
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: woods are wide open again and they just pick up activity,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: resume doing their deal. And so I love that water
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: access against slipping on the back side where I know
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: there's a lot of guys doing their things slipping. Um,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: they can go backside that covers you often look and
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: you know the deal. The back side of um, the
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: edge of that water access so many times can be
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: just the ideal bedding cover, ideal hang out, escape out, sanctuary.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: And so finding myself in the position to myself and
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: those um that first part of the rud or whatever,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: when all those guys coming in off the highway doing
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: their thing and just sit in that spot. Man, it's
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: it's fun when the sun comes up. You know, dude,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: I'm in the right spot. I don't care how many
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: guys coming up off that road. I'm in the right
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: spot for that, you know, exit strategy for those deer
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: and uh, that can be a lot of fun in
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: and of itself. So yeah, man, don't let the extra traffic.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: I mean, nobody wants to see that. We're all disappointed
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: when you pull up and there's somebody already there or
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: there's uh, five guys that come after you or whatever.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: But man, even with that, like we said, you've got
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: to learn to roll to plan B, C, A, D whatever. Uh.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: And even on the front side, just having that idea,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: that strategy, Hey, this is the public peace. This is
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: probably gonna be heavily hit. What's the backside looked like?
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: How can I come in by water? How can I
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: hunt the other side of the river that that that
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: they're not coming to you know, they're not wearing their
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: waiters in or or whatever. And I cruise in on
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: those spots and and uh, it opened up a whole
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: new world. Yeah. And you know that the water access
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: that we've you've covered that so much, but it is
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: so important. And what it is is we really underestimate
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: the impact we make make going into spots a lot
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: of times. And you know, you could walk into the
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: best spot out there, and if you walk in wrong,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: you're not gonna have a very good hunt. It's just
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: that's just how it works. If they know you went
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: in there, it's no bueno. And we just do that
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: to ourselves so often. And so not only can you
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: when you're talking water access or some of these sneaky
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: ways to get in. Not only can you get to
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: these parts of the properties that maybe aren't getting hunted
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: as hard, you're just getting in a way where they
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: don't know you're there, and you're getting in close to them.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: And that's that's one of the things. You know, everybody's
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: hunting mornings now this time of year. But you know,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I've talked about this so much and people will say, well,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: you know, you can't hunt mornings in September and early October,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Like that's crazy talk. It's all about your access, Like
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: it's all about how you can get in and how
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: you plant, where do you park, and how do you
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: like circle around? And so much of that is like
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: the work of hunting, like so much of just making
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: sure that you're not making a dumb mistake and walking
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: an extra half a mile. That's like the real work
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: of hunting pressure deer a lot of times. And you know,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: there are a situations where you can't do it, if
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: you've got little properties or something like that, that you
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: just can't do it. But that's part of the reason
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: why we like big chunks of public land sometimes like yeah,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: you can you can go park in the w M
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: A parking area and you can walk the same trail
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: in and everybody takes. Or you can park by the
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: bridge there on the highway, drop down there and get
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: into the river and come in the way. The deer
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: just don't expect you, and I just think we don't,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: you know. I always get this this kind of revelation
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: every couple of years when I'm hunting up in northern
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Wisconsin where the predator population is so freaking high, that
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: we have these dos and these deer concentrations right by
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: the cabins and right by the houses and right by
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: the highways, and and I'm always like, it's so weird
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: that I get back into this swamp and it looks
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: awesome and it's like a dead sea for deer sign
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: But I'm hunting this stupid tree row right by this
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: county road, and here's a whole bunch of deer, and
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: I just maybe there's a different reason, But in my head,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, well, the bears and the coyotes and
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: the wolves and the bobcats they live in that swamp,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: and these deer, you know, these these does that get
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: smart and they're pulling off a couple of fawns or
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: a fawn every year they're beding right by the cabin,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: and they're like these two legged predators. I'm not as
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: worried about them because I got a pattern them Versus
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: those four leggers that are out here day and night,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: seven all year round. I think, I think that stuff matters, man. Yeah, absolutely,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: That's why we think so many opportunities you can legally
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: pull it off. Funding closer to the house, closer to roads.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: And I think about all the deer we drive right
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: by that are sitting there on that you know, seventy
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: five yards off the road, bedded there on a little
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: little hump off the side of the road, a little
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: ridge up there, and we drive by. And I don't
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: want to give away too many secrets that you and
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: I use, but I mean, that's that's it. I mean,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: I mean, I think about so many of those things,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: you know, just overlook stuff. Um. So many of the
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: little public pieces that I hunt are not very big
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: at all, you know, they're small pieces of ground that
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: they're stuff that people drive by every day and they
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: they don't think anything of it. And I'm thinking, man,
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: there's deer hanging out and that because there's no pressure there. Yes,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: it's right there behind the business. Yes, it's right there
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: next to the house or whatever, next to the road.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: But like you said, those deer have learned there nothing
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: happening here. There's nothing going on here, there's no pressure here.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: I'm going to go. And again they're just they're staying
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: away from that uh pressure, any predators, whatever it is.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: And yeah, some of those are the best spots for sure. Yeah.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: And and they can they can really work in your
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: favor in the rut too. And this is something it's
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: this sort of a message we don't get out much
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: because we we talk about the rut solving all of
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: our problems, right, like all the deer are gonna be
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: running like crazy, and they're gonna be going through these
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: pinch points and this fence crossing and whatever. But when
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: you go out, even when you hunt a good place,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: if there's no guarantee of that like there, you know
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: you can have. This is I think the hardest thing
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: about the rut a lot of times is our expectations
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: are so high and then you get out there and
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: you realize, like I could go sit all day and
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: not see a deer or see one deer, and then
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: it's like, how do you stay in the game there?
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: And you think about, you know, like what you're talking
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: about here with these concentrations of deer wherever they're going
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: to be, if they're right next to the county road
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: or whatever, like, you have to find that now, thank
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: you have. You have to be open to looking for that,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: just like you said with your staging area strategy earlier.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: If you if you go try that thing, you believe
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: in your heart and soul where the deer coming. They
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: don't come, Okay, where are they? You know? And this
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: this comes up a lot, but you see this, especially
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: this time of year where dear land down sign man,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: like they're they're letting you know. And if you go
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: and you're like, I'm gonna hike all the way back
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: to the back of this this property and I'm gonna
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: be snorting lines of freaking mounta Knops off the back
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: of my pack to make it back there. Whatever. And
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: then you get back there and it's just not happening.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: But you walk through an area of two yards from
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: the parking lot that had a bunch of sign in it.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: You missed it. And everybody does this, like we we
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: fall in love with our ideas and we fall in
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: love with our strategies, and then you get out into nature,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: and nature says, actually it's happening right here, bro, walk
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: by it, don't walk by it. I don't care. But
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: what you what you actually want to find, is all
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: around you right now. And you're you're married to this
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: idea that you gotta go here or do this or
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: sit this spot. And it's just not it's not so
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: cut and dry. Yeah, yeah, you've got to that. Then
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: you've got so much of the the idea. Unfortunately, so
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: many of the YouTube channels and and public strategies and
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: all the stuff that we're seeing the social media and YouTube,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: you see so many guys that are pushing the whole
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: deal of of I mean, you gotta walk six miles
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: in here, and then the next guy is like, oh dude, no,
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: I walked seven miles. And it's this contest of who's
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: the baddest dude in the woods. Public hunting, and you
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: can't hunt under two miles from the truck and be
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: a man, you know what I'm saying. That's what the
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: That's what the chicks do, right, the girls that are
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: just getting started, that's what they do anybody that's been
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: hunting along. Any man's gonna walk at least through or
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: four maybe five miles, and and you know, I've got
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: nothing to prove anymore. Man, I'm not into that. If
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: I can find deer within a hundred yards of the road,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: and I can legally hunt, you know, a couple hundred
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: yards from the road, whatever, I'm dude, I'm right next
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: the road. I mean, go with the sign, don't leave
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: dear to go find dear. You know, that's the biggest thing.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: And we do that so many times, just to prove
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: something that we're we're tougher. We you know, we we
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: walked into the woods and you know, beat the mosquitoes
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: and you whatever. I think we're in a dangerous spot
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: right now because everybody wants to be the baddest deer
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: hunter in the woods. You know what I'm saying that
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: they you see it all the time, you know, and
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: it's it's if you're not hunting public plan or if
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: you're not hunting out of saddle. Uh, if you're not
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: you know, hunting fifty feet in the tree. You know whatever,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: it just keeps going up and up, and what do
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: you gotta do to be the bad dude you know
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: in the woods or whatever. It's like, Man, make it,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: you know, just kill kill deer, you know, I mean,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: don't you don't have to get all this stuff on
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: to impress everybody else. Just do what it takes to
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: kill deer, and and don't worry about all the other stuff. Yeah,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: and go have some freaking fun and that that uh,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: all right. We can't help ourselves. I was talking to
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: a buddy of mine this morning who he killed a
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: freaking stud buck in Minnesota last year. It was I
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: don't remember what it scored. It was it was like
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: upper one forties, I think, but it was heavy and
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: it was it was a freaking tote of it. It
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: was a great luck. And he said he talked to
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a guy the other day who saw a picture of it,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: and the guy was like, yeah, you know, this area
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: of the state would be good if you guys would
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: just stop shooting all those little three year olds. And
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: this deer was a like, so nobody's passing up this dear,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: Like unless your name, if your last name is the
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Constier Dury, you might pass Otherwise nobody else's like, everybody
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: kills this buck. And he was just like I'm just
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: so sick of that, that kind of idea that like,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: you know, like you're so special if you target huge
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: books or like maybe not even that just to like
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: talk down on other people's dear. It's just it's so bizarre,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: and we just can't help ourselves, like we're so locked
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: into the trophy thing that we just forget like, man,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: this is supposed to be fun. Like when you go
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: climb into that tree, you're supposed to be enjoying it.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: And that's you know, that's one of the things that
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: I really like talking to the hunting public guys, Like
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: I think that you know, everybody's like, oh, it's act
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: showed us how to stalk deer on the ground, or
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: they showed us that deer can be killed in public land,
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: like they did that. But what they did was they
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: showed people that you can have a hell of a
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: lot of fun doing this stuff. And I think that
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: was like sort of the great intangible that made them
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: so popular is people looked at that and they go,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: these guys are having fun, Like they're not taking themselves
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: super seriously and you know, preaching this bullshit of you know,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: the trophy management stuff. They're just like we're just out
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: here enjoying it our way and having a blast, and
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: that's refreshing. And I think I think that's what we
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: have to be really careful with when we talk about
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: rut hunting. Like I kind of mentioned earlier, is people
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: are so often like, this is my chance to go
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: kill a giant, Like yeah, you know of bow hunters
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: might do that, or you know by this time this season,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: maybe ten or twelve percent of bow hunters will fill
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: their tags in November and be done. The rest of
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: you won't. Like, okay, so do you do you wanna
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: like and you want to hold out, go ahead, but
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: do you want to go have a lot of fun?
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Like if that might not be it for you, Like
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: waiting for that one seventy just because it's the rut
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: might not work, you know, Like you go out and
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: start working these deer concentrations like we're talking about instead
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: of saying like it's November seven, I'm only targeting big bucks,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: like you can, you can be hunting for that, but
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: if you're not hunting for deer concentrations where they are
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: right now, you're probably missing the boat. Yeah absolutely, yeah,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: so true. And uh, like you said, man, just positioning
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: yourself where it can happen, getting your odds up, um,
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: but just not missing out on the fun. My gosh, man,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: I again you like you said that the percentage of
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: the guys that are going to kill that stud giant
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: what you dream about? The buck we all dream about, Um,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: those are those are pretty few and far between, depending
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: on where you are in the in the country. Um.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: For me, it's more like, man, you know what, it's
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: the first week in November. Anything can happen with every
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: time I sit in that stand, I'm not gonna miss out.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: Just the excitement of knowing that anything can happen every
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: time I put my button that stand. That to me
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: is where it's at. Just the fun of that, just
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: knowing that, Man, I'm not missing a sunrise because again
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: it's it's the first week, second week in November into
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: October whatever, and dude, anything can happen. I mean, it's
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: just at this time of year. Um, and so I
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: want to ride it out and be there as much
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: as I can. And you know, Hunt smart, you know,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: obviously don't just go blowing up your spots just because
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: you feel like you need to be there every day.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: But Hunt Smart strategically, but just be there. It's time
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: to be there, man, and get in the woods and
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: again catch those bucks as they first start to venture
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: out from those beds and get wandering a little further
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: and a little further, and he's realizing. Your trail cameras
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: will show you. You know, if you run trail cameras,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: you're gonna see, Hey, he's you know, he's gone from uh,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: coming out into the field or whatever at twelve o'clock
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: at night. Now he's you know, ten o'clock and now
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: it's creeping, you know, and you'll say that little trend,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: that transition. He starts creeping closer and closer, and it's
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: happened at this time of year. Next thing, you know,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: he's right there right before dark and and and those
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: are times when I say, you know what, I've got
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: to be there because he's creeping closer and closer a
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: daylight and then boom, next thing, you know, here he
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: comes down the trail. So it's you gotta be there
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: this time of year. Absolutely. That's you bring up a
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: good point there about trail cameras, where you know the
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: midnight picture, Yeah, that's cool, whatever, he's there, but that
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: picture right after dark on that food plot or that
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: field edge. That's telling you something. I keep that that's
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: telling you you're not dealing with a nocturnal deer. You're
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: telling you're dealing with a deer you can kill in
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: a staging area. Uh. The other thing you said there
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: about you know, not missing a sunrise. I think. I
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: think when you get to a certain age and you
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: get a lot of experience in this, you realize, you know,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: like the maybe the first two weeks in November are
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: the best example out in the outdoors. Like when you
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: when you've done this a lot, you want to put
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: yourself in the woods, like because how many Novembers are
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: you gonna get? It's it's like elk hunting, Like you
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: go elk hunting and you have one good elk hunt,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: It's like how many? You know, if you live where
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: a lot of the listeners here do you're not getting
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: that many weeks in the mountains dead or you know
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: the first four or five days of Turkey season, like
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: you want to miss that one of those? More way man,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: And the thing about it is the fun of deer hunting.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: We we we've we've painted this picture of like and
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: we default to this all the time. I do it
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: all the time where it's the killing the big bucks
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: is kind of what we de fault to talking about.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: But one of the things that makes it so damn
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: enjoyable is believing you've got a real shot of seeing deer.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Like when you go like you talked about that bottlenecks stand,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: that's just money. When you when the conditions set up
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: and you've got some history with a spot, or you
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: walk in and the freaking sign is legit and you
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: you hang that standard, you saddle up, and you just
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: believe it even when you don't see anything, Like if
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: you flame out for whatever reason, that's still more fun
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: than a lot of hunts because you're sitting there going
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: on any second. It's you know, that's one of the
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: reasons that those early season uh you know, velvet hunts
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: or those early season western kind of river type hunts
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: are so fun. You know, you sit up there in
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: glad said you go, Jesus, I saw seventeen deer cross
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: here yesterday, and I'm gonna go hang to stand here today.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Like even if for whatever reason, the pack of coyotes
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: a mountline comes in other hunters and it gets blown up.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: The time that you're sitting there, You're like, this is there.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: I can't think of hardly a better way to use
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: my time than plant my butt in a tree. Then yeah, yeah,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: absolutely that happened back in early season, you know, in Kentucky.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: I remember sitting there. Know when I'm in the right spot,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: it's gonna happen. Just just that nausea, just that almost
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: the butterflies. My hands starts sweating at last thirty forty
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: five minutes a daylight. I'm sitting there in my hands
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: or sweat. I ain't even seen it here yet, but
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: just knowing, hey, it's about to happen, it's about to
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: go down. And again I get the butterflies, get the jitters,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: knowledge of sweaty hands, and on the Lord, have mercy.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I don't know if I can handle this when it
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: does happen, you know, And um and gods, that just again,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: that experience, that excitement. Um, that's why we need to
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: do it. Man, you're gonna have if you can learn
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: to love that, that's uh, you're gonna get more of
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: that than you are. That encounter with the with the giant,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: that's a few and far between. Like we said, but man,
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: if you can learn to love the experience, love this
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: the journey along the way to get into that shot opportunity, man,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: it's that's where you're gonna make your money. Man, that's
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: a that's the good stuff. That's uh, that's just enjoying
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: it and in my mind being there for the right reason.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Just enjoying the journey along the way and not missing
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: out on all that because you're so focused on I've
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: got to find this one book that I saw one
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: time on a trail camera at midnight back in August.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. I mean, you know so
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: many people will just blow their whole season for something
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: that a fleeting glance of a deer they've never seen
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: in daylight. And so man, just enjoy the ride, enjoy
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: the journey. There's nothing like it. Yeah, I need I
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: want to just I want to. I want to tie
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: a bow on this with a to go back to
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: that what you said about, um, you know, not missing
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: the sunrise. Like that's one thing that I'm trying to
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: like really instilling my daughter's like you, I do this
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: in the summer with our small off fishing. You know,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: they can get up, can get up and we can
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: we can hit the lake at sunrise. There's no boats out,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: there's no jet skiers, there's no other kids to play with,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: yet everybody's still sleeping. You just get that moment of,
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: you know, two hours of awesome top water fishing and
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: it doesn't take away anything else from your day. Really,
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: I mean, you might be a little tired, but it's
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: like you never regret it. Even when you go out
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: and the fishing is not that good, you've got a
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: cold front come in, or something happens, you still never
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: regret it. Just like getting up for turkey. It's just
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: like getting out there. You know, even if it's November
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: twenty and you're like, oh man, it's gonna be a
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: lockdown and you know whatever is not happening, I'm like, man,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: maybe you know, maybe it's gonna suck. But if you
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: go into it and still think, oh it's November and
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: something could happen, and like, there's a lot worse ways
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: to spend your time, I can go get into the woods,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: like I think. I think that one of the biggest
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: keys to becoming like really content, you know, happy hunter
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: who kills a lot, is just accepting the fact that
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: you like being out there more than anything else, and
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: just making that whenever if the family is squared away
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: and everything is squared away, and you can be out there,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: be out there, that's right. Absolutely, Yeah, you gotta put
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: your time in. I remember you reading articles, you know,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: about that kind of stuff when I was a kid.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: You know, I can see articles of of you just
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: gotta put your time and you gotta put your time
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: in hunt as much as you can. And um and
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: like you said, I mean, you gotta take care of
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: your responsibilities and your family and and make sure you're
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: not neglecting time you need to be having with your
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: wife and kids. But um my, gosh, man, you gotta
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: put that time in. I mean, I know so many
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: days where I've slept in it just got lazy, you know,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: up and beating it up all through archery season, and um,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: you know again November gets here, I'm like, gosh, dang,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: I don't you know you started making excuses for why
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: you're gonna not hunt this stand or whatever. And I'm like, dude,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: you you can sleep. You can sleep in December or
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: gyne you know what. You can sleeping in a duck
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: season whatever. After duck season. Um, but you you've got
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: to get there, man, And like you said, you can
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: take that midday nap or whatever, but man, I just
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: hate to make the morning. Um just being lazy during
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the rut, you know, at these first few weeks November, gosh,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: you just as much as I can be. I'm gonna
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: try to be out there and you know, get hunt smart,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: but I'm just not missing out on those opportunities when
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: they come by. So yeah, I really realized how how
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: important that was when I quit drinking and I woke
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: up every day like Okay, you know, I'm still tired
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: and stuff like, but just not feeling like shit and
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: just it's just how it changed my my perspective of
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: of every hunt and every string of hunts where it's
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: you know, you're on a trip with your buddies and
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: it's seven days or it's the sixth day of your
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: your rut caation. Just it made me appreciate being out
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: there a hell of a lot more because I wasn't
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: fighting against this anything that I was dragging myself down with.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Managed it changed everything. It's so worth being out there.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Everybody's listening to this, do not take any time off
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: during the rut even if you hunt the same public
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: land that I do, or Brodie does go out there
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: with us. Uh Brodie As always, man, is so much
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: fun to talk to you. Thanks for coming on. Good luck,
