- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Bougie Multipreneur.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Hilary Hushauer.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Hi, let's be honest.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: If we waited to feel motivated before doing the hard things, most of us wouldn't get very far.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: There are days when you wake up energized, inspired, and full of ideas.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And then there are days you wake up where you're like, I don't want to go to work.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I don't want to make decisions.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I don't want to think one more thought.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And yet you still have to show up.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Today we're going to talk about how to stay motivated when you're not in a motivated state, why motivation is unreliable and what works better.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: How to use willpower, timing, food, and brain prep to keep going, and how to build systems that cure you when motivation disappears.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about motivation versus willpower.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So motivation is emotional, willpower is behavioral.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So motivation would say, I feel like doing this.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Willpower says, I'm doing this because I decided to.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: One of the biggest mind shifts that I've made, and one that I teach my coaching clients, is that we have to stop waiting to feel motivated, start acting from commitment.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: This aligns with some of the authors I read, such as like James Clear, who talks about identity-based habits, where you don't rise to motivation, you fall to your systems.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: So instead of asking, how do I feel today?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Ask, what's the next right action?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: We're business owners.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: We got to sometimes take this feeling out of it.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: And we need to do, we need action, we need to just do it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: But do it correctly and do it in a systematic way, right?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Um when is your brain like actually the best at working?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Because motivation isn't just like mental, it's biological.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So here are a few like practical brain-based strategies that you can use and that I use.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So work with your brain energy, not against it.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So most people in my, and this is including me, I have a high-focus window early in the day.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: The morning's the best for me, and I can usually go an hour to two hours where I have the most energy, focus, and the most creativity.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: But midday, I can't stay focused very well.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I'm not very creative.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I'll get a second wind energy, like later, like after dinner time, but not often.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: So I have to do certain tasks in the morning because that's my best energy time.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: So think about your brain and when are you at your best?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: There's a whole bunch of um quizzes and stuff you can take too.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: I forget the names off the top of my head, but you can learn when your best and your most creative energy is too.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So for instance, like deep thinking with strategy and writing is usually best in the morning.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Whereas like admin, emails, scheduling, these are like some basic things.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: You could do these in the afternoon.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I feel like these don't require a lot of brain power.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And then in the evening time, you might think of your creative brainstorming or visioning.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: So something to think about.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: How do you need to rework your schedule?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: That way you will feel motivated.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: You know, we're not lazy, we're just misaligned, if you will.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And as a chiropractor, we love those terms, misaligned.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Food does matter more than we want to admit to.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So if you are lacking in your motivation, could crash from skipping meals, having too much sugar, not enough protein, or not enough hydration, right?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And we know these things.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: We know we're supposed to have enough protein, drink enough water, not have sugar.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: But are you skipping meals?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Something to think about.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I do find that it's a constant struggle for me to make sure I have enough protein every day.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm counting my protein all the time.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And the water, how many glasses was that that I had?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: But some simple things we could do during our day.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: We could have more protein and fat in the mornings, like eggs or yogurt.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: My favorite is a protein shake because I feel like I'm always busy, and um, I have some really clean protein shakes, and I know I'm getting exactly 30 grams right then, and I'm good.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Try to also have some water before you do your caffeine.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Um, for me, I love a good green like drink in the morning with water, and that kind of just gets me going.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: I also don't love taking a lot of vitamins.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: So if it's ground up in a green drink and or in a protein shake or in a smoothie, I'm there for it.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And then avoid heavy carbs before deep work because we can't expect our brain to perform if we're underfueled.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: So watch your food, right?
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe even have a little food journal for a week and see how your brain does with different food.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: But what are we gonna do on our low days?
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Like, how are we gonna stay motivated?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So lower the bar, right?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Don't remove the bar, but lower it.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: On low days, you don't need to do everything on the list, but you need to do something.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: So instead of saying, like, I need to finish this whole project, try, I'm going to work on this for 10 minutes.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: You might, after 10 minutes, think I can do another 10 minutes, right?
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: But don't have the high expectation, like you have to finish it all on one day.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Also, I don't procrastinate because that never helps me work better.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: If you're a procrastinator and you thrive on that, great.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: If not, most of us don't do really well with that.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: So try to pre-plan things out in increments during your week.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: So if you know by Friday something's due, then you have five days to break it up.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: So also you could borrow some of your motivation from your environment.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: So you could change your location, right?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: You could go work somewhere else.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: You could put a new music like work playlist on.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: And there's even certain tones that help your brain waves.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Put on something different.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Light a candle, do something, wear a certain outfit for work mode.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: If you're not motivated in your pajamas at home, in your scrubs at work, then why don't you put on some nice clothes and a blazer?
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: And it's time to work now.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And your brain does respond to cues.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: There's also different scents you could use.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So you could have certain scents that you only use during like your energy time, your work time.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I would use uh lavender and relax or anything, but you could use something.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's like an orange scent or a spearmint or eucalyptus, something like that.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: But um, make decisions ahead of time before you're tired.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: So, for example, like when I don't feel like it, I'll still show up for 20 minutes, right?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: This is the type of things I say to myself when I'm going to the gym.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I don't want to do this, but I'll do it for 20 minutes.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: I always stay the full time, but I say 20 minutes, I say in my mind, fine, I'll do it for 20 minutes.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and I don't negotiate with myself on weekdays.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: So weekends might be a different story for you, but during the week, you have I have to stay motivated and I will continue.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Um decision fatigue kills motivation, but structure saves it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Have some structure.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Know what your day looks like, your week looks like.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: What else could we do to prepare our brains for better days?
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: We could try walking, right?
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: But without podcasts.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Um let your brain just go and don't have anything inputting into it.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Just walk with no noise, actually, right?
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Um write down ideas without judgment.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Just write.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Just write, write, write.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Doesn't matter.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Doesn't have to be complete sentences, just jot some things down.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: I know that when I'm driving, I have a lot of like great ideas and thoughts, and I always wish I had someone to write them down.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: So use your like voice notes app on your phone and just verbally spit them out.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: And if you are stuck on something, just step away, do something else for a little bit.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: You know, sometimes our best ideas come after you stop pushing it.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: And also, this is where like the mentorship and coaching matters because clarity can come faster when you're not in your own head.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: So reach out to your mentor or your business coach and get help.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: You know, just reach out.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Um, I know, for instance, I love helping my coaching clients with creating systems that way they don't have to rely on the motivation.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: It just is a system and it's a wheel and it keeps going, right?
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: You structure your days around your energy and not around guilt of having to do something.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: And then build momentum in the hard seasons.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: There's a different season in every business.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Some of them are easy, some of them are hard.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Keep going.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Know your seasons.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Know you might have an easy season coming up, but right now you're in the hard hustle season.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Keep going.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: You know, um, with your coach, talk about better alignment and support and strategy during the hard season for you, you know.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Um, and if you don't have a coach, reach out.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Um, this is what I do.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And if you don't want to work with me, I have a lot of other coaches.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And I even have a personally, I have a great coach I can refer you to.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: So if today feels heavy, let this be your permission slip.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: You don't need to feel motivated to move forward.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Just pick one small action today.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Do it imperfectly, fine.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: And trust that the consistency beats your inspiration every time.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: So if this episode resonated with you, share it with someone who needs it.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And I will see you on the next one.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Bye bye.
