- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, friend.
- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back to Bible Track Decos.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Mike.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a curie.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_01]: You're host.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so very much for joining me once again today.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited about the direction that God's leading us for this week abroad cast.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: So give you a little bit of forewarning, I'll kind of put a shot across the bow.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: There is a possibility that at some point this week, I may get just a little bit blunt.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: I may get a little chippy.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: I may go as they say, hard in the paint.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: My desire is not to with our subject matter this week to offend, my goal is not to cause angst or irritation, but my desire is to take God's word, God's holy book the Bible, and to share with you a few thoughts that he's given me, that God has given me that were a help to me, that I hope, my prayers, that there'll be a hope to you.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: as well.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to ask you to grab your bibles.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: If you are able to grab your own copy of God's Word and turn to the book of first Samuel in the Old Testament, first Samuel for those of you that are familiar with Bible characters and where they appear in the Bible.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: You may be thinking, are we going to talk about King Saul?
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: Are we going to talk about Jonathan his son?
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: Or maybe we're going to talk about David.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: If you chose that third answer, David,
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: you would be correct.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: We will be discussing David today.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to ask you to grab your Bibles.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: First single chapter number 17.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: While you turn there, let me tell you about a gospel track that I've got my hand right now.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: This gospel track is called seven questions, boys, and girls ask.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_01]: But those of you that are watching the video version of this broadcast on YouTube will notice that I actually have two
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: copies of this gospel track.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: They look very similar, the same coloration, but you'll notice if you look closely enough and just give them more than a cursory read, you'll notice that the language is different.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: You see one of these seven questions boys and girls ask and the other is the exact same in Spanish.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: This gospel track here, much like many of our gospel tracks,
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: Dr. Paul Levine, many years ago, wrote this gospel track and it's been a blessing to boys and girls across America and the world, and this gospel track could be ordered today in English and in Spanish.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: We have many, many other gospel tracks that are in different languages.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: We printed in almost 100 different languages over these past 80 years.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: to God be the glory.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: Let me encourage you to go to bibletracksink.org.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: Bibletracksink.org and you could order your very own copies of seven questions, boys and girls ask, you may be asking, as an adult, what are those seven questions?
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: Well,
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to let the cat out of the bag.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: You have to go to bibletracksink.org to order your very own copies today.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: We're in the book of First Samuel chapter number 17.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to need to do a little bit of scripture reading today to set the stage and depending on how much time we have, I have an illustration and historical anecdote that I think might be a help.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_01]: to you to kind of make things clear.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: Illustrations often are just the window that lets a little bit of light in.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: First annual chapter 17, are you there?
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: Let's read together.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: The Bible says, first annual 17 verse one, now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: and we're gathered together at Shoko, which belong to Judah.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: Now, realize this, they were on Judah's land.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: They were on Israelite land here.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: They were already encroaching, and it was very clear.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: The reason they had come realized also, sometimes we skim over things without really diving into what they're saying.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: And the Bible says here, the Philistines gather together,
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: their armies.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: This was not just a skirmishing advance.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: This was not just a reconnaissance.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: This was not just a platoon or a squad or a company or a battalion or brigade or a no friend.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: It was an regiment or a division either.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: This was not just one army, but this was armies.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: We don't know precisely how many, but they were coming loaded for bear.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: These Philistines were coming.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: and they were on Judas Land and pitched between Shoko and Azika in Ephes Daman.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: And Saul, and the men of Israel, remember Saul is King Saul, and the men of Israel, first two, were gathered together and pitched by the Valley of Ela.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: If you've ever heard the story of David and Goliath, the Valley of Ela is where this happens.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: And set the battle in a ray against the Philistines.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: Now, for some reason, the Israelites are a little scared.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: For some reasons, I would hesitate to call them cowardly because I'm not sure what I would do in their place.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: I probably would have gone along with the crowd, but they're not just running out there with their swords and just attacking Philistines, willy-nilly, okay?
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: They're taking their time, they set the battle in a ray, but then we'd see in version number three, and the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, and there was a valley between them.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: Now the Philistines had a really good reason to just lay back and wait, because they had a man in verse number four, we are introduced to, they're went out a champion.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: out of the camp of the Philistines named film the blank Goliath, okay?
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: Of Gath whose height was six cubits and a span.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: Now think about that for just a moment, okay?
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: If he was just six foot tall plus a little bit, that by itself back in that day, a men were on average a good bit shorter and all those things, he would have been a pretty tall guy anyway.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: but he was six cubits and a spanned.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: You'd how long a cubit is, normally historically, we think of a cubit being about 18 inches or so.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: This guy was enormous, eight, nine, 10 feet tall, first five, he had and helmet of brass upon his head.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: and he was armed with a coat of mail.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: And the weight of the coat was five thousand sheckles of brass and he agrees of brass upon his legs and a target of brass between the shoulders and the staff of his spear was like a weavers beam and his spear is headweight 600 sheckles of iron and one, meaning an arm of error, bearing a shield went before him.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: Now obviously, the Philistines are there for one purpose, right?
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: they are there to wage war.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then they send out not only a messenger but a very obvious messenger, someone to get the point across.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: It tells the Israelites exactly what's going on today, this massive mountain of a man.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I imagine that, think about that, okay?
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: Normally when somebody strides out and they push apart the line of people standing, they think of the Philistines.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, use your imagination, okay?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: Think about looking as an Israelite, looking across the valley, and on the other side, there's this line of people, armies of people, just a massive amount.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: You're already thinking, oh man, this is not great.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: I know we have Saul, I know he's strong, I know he's a great warrior, he's a charismatic leader,
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, well, I think we can do this with God's help.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: We can do this and then all of a sudden think about this before he even gets to the first line of people you already start to see him.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's like 15 rows back.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: and all of a sudden you hear like a grown, a gutteral moan, go up from your side.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's never good when your side of the battle's going, oh, no, and Goliath starts walking through.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he must have weighed five, 600 pounds.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: He was a,
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: massive dude in it where we know you know muscle normally where he's more than fat and all that type of stuff Well, Goliath probably was not an obese individual.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: He was probably a well-toned trim He was a weapon of war.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: He's what he was It's a carry everything that he was carrying.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: He could not have been out of shape.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: He was massive, but he was also massively in shape
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so, Goliath comes walking, he comes past the 15th to 14th, 13th, 12th, he comes past the second and first line and then finally, everyone's able to see him his full stature.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: They could literally see from his chest up, they could literally see from almost his belt buckle up when he was standing behind people, but now they can see him and they can tell how big he really is.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: and he did not come with platitudes.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't come with a cordial greeting for the Israelites.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't come to just shoot the breeze with King Saul.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, what did he have to say?
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: In first Samuel chapter 17, and let's see, verse number eight, and he stood.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: And cried unto the armies of Israel in seven to them.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I have to go really gutter-roll and really deep when Goliath talks.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: He says,
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: Why are ye come out to set your battle in a ray?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul, choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: But, if I prevail against him and kill him,
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: then shall ye be our servants and serve us?"
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: And a close-up off, first-hand, and the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Give me a man that we may fight together.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_01]: This glad guy.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, now my radio gentleman, but a Mark who edits these radio broadcasts maybe he can put some extra bass in some some some some umph behind the the the Goliath talking there, but no matter how impressive the little bit of bass that I put on that was Can I tell you Goliath was fearsome.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: He was terrifying.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: He was absolutely a marvel.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, think about it.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: How often do you see a guy that's nine foot tall?
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: How often do you see a guy that's nine foot tall has a massive, just an enormous spear with a coat of mail that looks like it weighs a ton.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: And he just comes out and matter of factly tells you how it's gonna be and how he's gonna kill your champion because he's the champion of the Philistines and you all are gonna be our slaves.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: Think about where these Israelites are at in their heart of hearts.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: Probably not even in the heart of hearts.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: They were probably wearing their feelings on their sleeve.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: They'll look at each other left and right thinking what are we doing here?
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: Why did I report for battle today, right?
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the thought as we dive into this thought for this week, okay?
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's about time.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: It is the time.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: If you're looking for a time to declare war today is the day.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_01]: If you're looking for the opportunity, if you're looking for the opening, if you are curious about the chance about when you should declare war today is that day.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: This week is that week.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: Now, for sake of time, I'm going to save the illustration for tomorrow.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to want to stick around.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to want to hear what we have when a dive back in the history.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: Some 30, I'm sorry, not just 30, it would be 67 to 80 years for an illustration.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to really tie together this Bible story in current events and where you and I live.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to ask you to tune into Mar at a Bible track deck.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: It was, but I'm going to tell you right now.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: you and I.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: This is not just for you.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: This thought has helped me today.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: This thought has helped me in the study for it.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's time to declare war.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: You say, hold up a moment.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like the Philistines are the ones declaring war.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like the world is declaring war on us.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: You're telling me I have to declare war back absolute friend.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: It absolutely.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's time to declare war.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to ask you to debt today to do this, to commit to coming back to Bible Trek at Goast tomorrow, because we're going to take this Bible story.
