Latest / The Rand Report: Sports / Skubal’s Home Debut and the Urgency Test
Transcript
- 0:04Tarek Skubal did not dominate Dodger Stadium
- 0:07on his first night home. Five innings, four hits,
- 0:11three runs, six strikeouts, 95 pitches. He left
- 0:17the game trailing. Command was off. The fastball
- 0:20was not locating the way it usually does. He
- 0:22said it himself. He sprayed the ball a little.
- 0:25And still the Dodgers found a way. They scored,
- 0:28they fought, they won six to five over the Royals.
- 0:32This is the Rand report. I'm Jim Rand. That night
- 0:35told you more about where this Dodgers team actually
- 0:38sits than any of the deadline celebration or
- 0:41the preseason hype did. Scoobal is the biggest
- 0:44arm they could add at the trade deadline. Back
- 0:47-to -back Cy Young winner, the clear prize on
- 0:49the market, the left -hander who was supposed
- 0:51to make an already strong rotation feel unfair
- 0:54to the rest of the National League. Los Angeles
- 0:57gave up real prospect capital to get him. three
- 1:00pieces that mattered in the system, and the expectation
- 1:03that came with the deal was immediate and heavy.
- 1:06This was supposed to be the final piece that
- 1:08turned a strong contender into something close
- 1:10to a lock for another deep October run. Then
- 1:13he took the mound at Dodger Stadium for the first
- 1:15time in the white uniform. The crowd was ready
- 1:18for the electric night. What they got was a competitor
- 1:21who was human. Not bad, not soft, just not sharp.
- 1:26He competed through it. He did not buckle when
- 1:28the command was missing. but the dominant version
- 1:30that made him the most sought -after starter
- 1:32available did not show up on that first home
- 1:35night. Dave Roberts saw something else that mattered
- 1:38more than the final line on the scoreboard. He
- 1:41saw urgency. He said it after the game. The club
- 1:44finally showed the fight he had been looking
- 1:46for during the recent skid. They had lost eight
- 1:49of nine heading into this home stand. The energy
- 1:51had been flat. The approach looked soft and stretches.
- 1:54Monday night that changed. They answered. They
- 1:59did not wait for the new ace to save them. They
- 2:01played like a team that still understands it
- 2:03has something to prove even after consecutive
- 2:05titles. That is the real story of the night.
- 2:09The Dodgers can acquire almost any arm they want.
- 2:12They have the farm system depth and the organizational
- 2:14confidence to make those moves when a difference
- 2:16maker becomes available. They hear the same complaints
- 2:19about parody and ruining the game every time
- 2:22they add another star. Roberts has pushed back
- 2:24on that narrative more than once. He is not wrong
- 2:27when he says other teams had the chance to step
- 2:29up for scuba and chose not to match the price.
- 2:32None of that changes the requirement once the
- 2:34lights come on at the stadium. You do not buy
- 2:37October by simply adding the best available name.
- 2:40You still have to show up with the right edge
- 2:42every single night. The dynasty tax is real.
- 2:45It is not just the prospects you give up in the
- 2:47deal. It is the expectation that attaches itself
- 2:50to every move of that size. An expectation without
- 2:53urgency turns into softness faster than most
- 2:55people want to admit. Scoobal will be better.
- 2:59Roberts already said he expects a different version
- 3:01the next time out. The stuff is still elite,
- 3:03the competitor is still there. One rough home
- 3:06start does not rewrite what he is or what he
- 3:08can still be in October. But the larger point
- 3:11stands for the entire roster. Talent is not the
- 3:14same thing as urgency. Star power is not the
- 3:16same thing as competing when the command is off
- 3:19and the score is tight in the middle of a skid.
- 3:21The Dodgers got the win. They saw the fight Roberts
- 3:24wanted. That is a start. Now they have to keep
- 3:26it night after night because the rest of the
- 3:29league is not going to feel sorry for them when
- 3:31the new ace has an off night or when the lineup
- 3:33goes quiet for a few games. This is the cost
- 3:36of being the team everyone else is measuring
- 3:38themselves against. You get the resources, you
- 3:41get the stars, you also get the standard that
- 3:43never lets up. One win after a skid does not
- 3:46reset that standard. It only proves the standard
- 3:49is still reachable. Now shift the lens to the
- 3:52NFL. Training camps are deep into the work. Preseason
- 3:55Week 1 is only days away, and the injury list
- 3:58is already doing what it always does in August.
- 4:00It is rewriting depth charts before the games
- 4:02that actually count even begin. Laramie Tunsel
- 4:06is the clearest example right now. Torn triceps,
- 4:09surgery required, significant time, possibly
- 4:12months. One of the better left tackles in the
- 4:14league is now a major question mark for the Washington
- 4:17commanders and for Jaden Daniels' protection.
- 4:20That is not a soft injury. That is a foundational
- 4:23piece of the offensive line taken away in a one
- 4:25-on -one pass rush drill. Brandon Coleman will
- 4:28step in. The organization has said they are not
- 4:31looking outside for help right now. We will see
- 4:33how that holds when the regular season starts
- 4:35and the protection is tested every single week
- 4:38against real pass rushers. There are other names
- 4:42across the league. Luther Burden in Chicago dealing
- 4:44with a growing issue that is expected to cost
- 4:47him the entire preseason. Other camps reporting
- 4:49soft tissue problems, ACL concerns, and the usual
- 4:53early attrition that never makes the highlight
- 4:55reels but still changes the season for entire
- 4:57position groups. This is the part of the calendar
- 5:01where the soft talk starts to separate from reality.
- 5:04You hear the same lines every August. The energy
- 5:07is different this year. Guys are competing at
- 5:10a higher level. This group has a real chip on
- 5:12its shoulder. Some of it is true. Some of it
- 5:15is just camp noise designed to sound good in
- 5:18media sessions and social clips. The only thing
- 5:20that actually counts is who is still standing
- 5:22and still available when the pads come off and
- 5:25the games start counting for real in September.
- 5:29Availability is a skill. Toughness is a skill.
- 5:32Staying healthy enough to actually play the season
- 5:34is part of competing at this level. The teams
- 5:37that treat camp like a performance for the cameras
- 5:39usually find out the hard way when the injuries
- 5:42hit and the depth is tested. The ones that treat
- 5:44it like real work, the ones that demand physicality,
- 5:48accountability, and consistent standards every
- 5:50single day give themselves a better chance to
- 5:53survive the attrition that always comes with
- 5:55a long season. That is the real separation. Not
- 5:58the highlight reel plays in shorts. Not the quotes
- 6:01about energy. The separation comes from who is
- 6:03still healthy, still disciplined, and still holding
- 6:06the line when the calendar turns and the stakes
- 6:08rise. Scooballs Night in Los Angeles and the
- 6:12early injury reports across the NFL are the same
- 6:15story told in two different sports. Talent is
- 6:17not enough. Star power is not enough. The narrative
- 6:20you build in July and early August is not enough.
- 6:24You still have to show up with urgency. You still
- 6:27have to compete when your best stuff is not there.
- 6:30You still have to survive the attrition that
- 6:32comes with the job. The Dodgers got the win on
- 6:35Monday. They saw the urgency Roberts wanted.
- 6:38That is a start. Now they have to keep it night
- 6:41after night because no amount of deadline hardware
- 6:43changes the fact that baseball still requires
- 6:45you to compete every time the ball is thrown.
- 6:48And in the NFL, the teams that keep their key
- 6:50pieces healthy and their standards high will
- 6:53separate from the ones still talking about camp
- 6:55energy when September arrives and the real tests
- 6:58begin. This has been The Rand Report. I'm Jim
- 7:02Rand. Less hype, more truth. Until next time,
- 7:07keep competing.
